  5. We're going to be reading from the book of Nehemiah, chapter 8, verses 1 through 13, and verse 18 as printed in the liturgy.

    Nehemiah 8:1–13

  6. A reading from the book of Nehemiah.

  7. I think I better change these.

  8. When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns,

  9. all the people came together as one in the square before the water gate.

  10. They told Ezra, the teacher of the law, to bring out the book of the law of Moses,

  11. which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

  12. So on the first day of the seventh month, Ezra, the priest, brought the law before the assembly,

  13. which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.

  14. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the water gate

  15. in the presence of the men, women, and others who could understand.

  16. All the people listened attentively to the book of the law.

  17. Ezra, the teacher of the law, stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion.

  18. Beside him on his right stood Mattathiah, Shema, Aniah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maseah.

  19. And on his left were Padaiah, Mishael, Malchiah, Hashem, Hashbadanah, Zechariah, and Meshulam.

  20. Ezra opened the book.

  21. All the people could see him because he was standing above them.

  22. And as he opened it, people all stood up.

  23. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people lifted their hands and responded,

  24. Amen, Amen.

  25. Then they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

  26. The Levites, Joshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akub, Shabbathai, Hodiah, Messiah, Kalita, Azariah,

  27. Josabad, Hanan, and Paliah instructed the people in the law

  28. so that they understood what was being read.

  29. Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the law,

  30. and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all,

  31. This day is holy to the Lord your God.

  32. Do not mourn or weep.

  33. For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the law.

  34. Nehemiah said,

  35. Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks and send some to those who have nothing prepared.

  36. This day is holy to our Lord.

  37. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

  38. The Levites calmed all the people, saying,

  39. Be still, for this is a holy day.

  40. Do not grieve.

  41. Then all the people went away to eat and drink,

  42. to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,

  43. because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

  44. On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families,

  45. along with the priests and the Levites,

  46. gathered around Ezra, the teacher,

  47. to give attention to the words of the law.

  48. Day after day,

  49. from the first day to the last,

  50. Ezra read from the book of the law of God.

  51. They celebrated this festival for seven days,

  52. and on the eighth day,

  53. in accordance with the regulation,

  54. there was an assembly.

  55. This is the word of the Lord.

  56. Thanks be to God.

  57. I don't know about you,

  58. but I thought not many people could have read all those names

  59. the way that Joan just read those names.

  60. So is that not amazing?

  61. I mean,

  62. I was trying all week and couldn't do it.

  63. So way to go, Joan.

  64. We are continuing today in this journey of exploring God

  65. and looking at these various questions that we have about God,

  66. and today's question is,

  67. is the Bible reliable?

  68. Is the Bible reliable?

  69. 18th century French philosopher Voltaire said that,

  70. he predicted that the Bible would become a museum piece

  71. within 100 years of his lifetime,

  72. and would be replaced by more advanced philosophies of life.

  73. But of course, today,

  74. the Bible persists

  75. in remaining one of the most popular books,

  76. the most popular book in the world.

  77. And why is that?

  78. Well, the Apostle Paul writes in the New Testament,

  79. he says this in 2 Timothy 3,

  80. he says,

  81. all Scripture is inspired by God.

  82. All Scripture is inspired.

  83. It's breathed out by God.

  84. And what exactly did God inspire?

  85. What did he breathe out in the creation of the Bible?

  86. Well, over 1,600 years,

  87. about the Bible was written by 40 authors

  88. on three different continents

  89. and two different languages

  90. and over two testaments.

  91. It was written by kings, scholars, philosophers,

  92. fishermen, poets, statesmen, historians,

  93. teachers, prophets, and doctors.

  94. And they all wrote different types of literature,

  95. history, poetry, prophecy, letters, and so forth.

  96. And throughout the Bible,

  97. it makes an amazing claim for itself

  98. that on the one hand,

  99. it's 100% the work of human authors,

  100. and yet it also claims to be 100% inspired by God.

  101. Now, many people in the secular West,

  102. particularly,

  103. increasingly have questions

  104. about the reliability of the Bible.

  105. And maybe that's you,

  106. or maybe that's people in your life

  107. that you're having conversations with.

  108. A lot of people I've met over the years

  109. in the East Bay say that

  110. science has disproved the Bible.

  111. And I believe in science,

  112. and so I can't believe in the supernaturalism

  113. and the miracles of the Bible.

  114. Or another person may say,

  115. as a believer in evolution,

  116. I can't accept the Bible's pre-scientific accounts

  117. of the origin of life.

  118. Or you may say,

  119. well, science isn't necessarily my issue,

  120. but I see much of the Bible

  121. as historically inaccurate.

  122. And I can't be sure,

  123. I don't think any of us can be sure

  124. that the Bible's account of events

  125. is what actually happened.

  126. Or maybe you say,

  127. my problem's not so much science or history.

  128. My problem with the Bible

  129. is that it's culturally obsolete,

  130. that much of its social teaching

  131. is morally regressive.

  132. The things it says about slavery

  133. and women and sexuality,

  134. all of this is impossible to,

  135. makes it impossible for me

  136. to accept that the Bible

  137. has the complete authority

  138. that Christians say that it does.

  139. And if that's you,

  140. we welcome you.

  141. A lot of us have those questions too.

  142. And I cannot begin to even barely address

  143. one of those questions today.

  144. So sorry to disappoint you.

  145. I'm going to lead a lot on the table.

  146. But I do hope that you'll come

  147. to our Q&A afterwards.

  148. And you can grill me

  149. and we'll talk at length

  150. as long as you'd like

  151. about those questions.

  152. I do want to say up top though

  153. that in a way,

  154. the Bible is unreliable.

  155. The Bible can be unreliable

  156. if you read it as an anthology

  157. of helpful thoughts

  158. and a collection of nuggets of wisdom

  159. where we pick and choose different parts

  160. to give us comfort and guidance and direction.

  161. If you read the Bible that way,

  162. it's going to be unreliable for you.

  163. If you come to the Bible

  164. as a series of isolated sayings,

  165. which you dip in at random

  166. and extract little bits with no context,

  167. and then you take those fragments

  168. and you fit them into the various nooks and crannies

  169. of a larger enlightenment story of the world

  170. that says reason is going to conquer nature

  171. and science and technology

  172. is going to help us progress toward a utopia,

  173. the Bible is going to be unreliable to you.

  174. If you try to make the Bible

  175. be about a story

  176. that's completely different

  177. than the story the Bible is actually telling you,

  178. it's not going to be reliable for you.

  179. If you come to the Bible

  180. without a map,

  181. without a framework,

  182. and without particular lenses

  183. for how the different parts

  184. of the Bible fit together

  185. in a unified,

  186. coherent story of the world,

  187. a unified,

  188. coherent story of the kingdom of God

  189. and the covenants

  190. that bring about the kingdom of God,

  191. it's not going to make sense to you

  192. and it's going to be unreliable to you.

  193. And so I want to turn today

  194. to this little book.

  195. I'm guessing not a lot of us

  196. have read Nehemiah lately.

  197. And I want to turn to

  198. the book of Nehemiah chapter 8

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  199. where we have 50,000 people

  200. gathered together

  201. to hear,

  202. read,

  203. and taught

  204. the Bible.

  205. And I want to ask the question,

  206. why?

  207. At least for these 50,000 people,

  208. why do they think

  209. the Bible is reliable?

  210. And what might that mean for us?

  211. How might that help us?

  212. So I want to talk a little bit about

  213. listening attentively,

  214. interpreting faithfully,

  215. and responding properly.

  216. Because I think these are keys

  217. to engaging with the Bible

  218. in a reliable way.

  219. Listening attentively,

  220. interpreting faithfully,

  221. and responding properly.

  222. First of all,

  223. listening attentively.

  224. Look at verse 1.

  225. It says that

  226. all the people

  227. assembled with one accord

  228. in the square,

  229. and they told Ezra,

  230. the teacher of the law,

  231. to bring out the book

  232. of the law of Moses

  233. which the Lord had commanded

  234. for Israel.

  235. And then verse 3,

  236. it says,

  237. he read it aloud

  238. from daybreak till noon

  239. as he faced the square

  240. in the presence

  241. of the men,

  242. women,

  243. and the others

  244. who could understand,

  245. and all the people

  246. listened attentively

  247. to the book

  248. of the law.

  249. So this is a gathering

  250. of 50,000 men,

  251. women,

  252. and children

  253. which tells us

  254. that it assumes

  255. that kids have the mental

  256. and spiritual capacity

  257. to understand the Bible

  258. and that these parents

  259. have obviously done something

  260. to prepare their kids

  261. to come and receive

  262. whatever's about to happen

  263. with some benefit.

  264. They've been working

  265. with their kids at home

  266. probably on the Bible.

  267. And if you don't have

  268. any kids' Bibles at home,

  269. I brought a stack

  270. and I'm going to leave them up here

  271. for you to look at afterwards.

  272. But it says that they came

  273. as one.

  274. There was a unity.

  275. There was a solidarity

  276. about this gathering.

  277. And what have they come for?

  278. They say,

  279. bring out the book.

  280. Bring out the book.

  281. They summon Ezra.

  282. Ezra,

  283. is he summoning the people?

  284. Is Ezra imposing the book on him?

  285. Is he begging people

  286. to come to his Bible study?

  287. No, it says the people

  288. take initiative

  289. and they make a demand.

  290. They're eager

  291. and they're enthusiastic

  292. to come and stand here

  293. for six hours

  294. from dawn until noon

  295. and the heat

  296. in the Middle East.

  297. They say,

  298. bring out the book.

  299. And that's how you know

  300. you're in a living church

  301. and you're experiencing

  302. a revival

  303. in the Spirit of God

  304. when the Spirit of God

  305. comes down

  306. and the people are saying,

  307. bring out the stinking book.

  308. And what is this book?

  309. Well, it's called

  310. The Law of Moses

  311. that the Lord commanded.

  312. Right?

  313. The first five books

  314. of the Bible,

  315. Genesis, Exodus,

  316. Leviticus, Numbers,

  317. and Deuteronomy,

  318. The Law of Moses

  319. that the Lord commanded.

  320. And so the question there

  321. is who wrote it?

  322. Did Moses write it

  323. or did the Lord write it?

  324. And the answer is yes.

  325. Fully human,

  326. fully divine.

  327. Just like Jesus,

  328. it's fully humanly authored

  329. and fully divinely inspired

  330. at the same time.

  331. And these people come here

  332. because they trust

  333. that this book is reliable.

  334. Why do they trust that?

  335. Well, to give you

  336. some backstory,

  337. last week we looked at

  338. Exodus 19 through 24

  339. which is actually

  340. the first public reading

  341. of Scripture in the Bible.

  342. Israel had just been

  343. rescued from Egypt.

  344. They were no longer slaves

  345. and they needed

  346. a new identity.

  347. They needed a new story

  348. to live by.

  349. And so God gathers

  350. the people at Mount Sinai

  351. and Moses reads

  352. the Scriptures aloud

  353. and as they hear it

  354. they're reminded

  355. of where they came from

  356. and who they are

  357. and the new future

  358. that they're being called

  359. to live for.

  360. And that wasn't the last time

  361. they did that.

  362. Like when they finally got

  363. to the promised land

  364. they did it again.

  365. Joshua pulled out the book.

  366. He pulled all the people together

  367. and they listened

  368. to the Scriptures read aloud

  369. and they remembered

  370. this is where we came from

  371. and this is how

  372. we're to keep living

  373. as part of this new story

  374. that God is writing.

  375. Sadly, after Joshua died

  376. there are no more stories

  377. about people coming together

  378. to hear God's Word.

  379. You get to the book of Judges

  380. and it says that they forgot

  381. the story.

  382. We're told in Judges 2

  383. that the people,

  384. a whole generation arose

  385. who did not know the Lord

  386. or what the Lord

  387. had done for them.

  388. That went on for centuries.

  389. King David brought

  390. the Scriptures back

  391. to the people

  392. and yet they forgot again

  393. and then King Josiah

  394. discovered the law

  395. and the temple

  396. and he got excited

  397. and called all the people

  398. together to practice

  399. this reading of Scripture

  400. and he sparked

  401. this renewal movement

  402. but then of course

  403. they forgot again

  404. and they ended up

  405. in exile in Babylon.

  406. And so that is why

  407. in this moment

  408. when Ezra and Nehemiah

  409. come back from the exile

  410. in Babylon

  411. they know

  412. that the thing

  413. they need to do

  414. above all else

  415. is to remind the people

  416. who they are

  417. and whose they are

  418. and how they're to live.

  419. And so reading Scripture

  420. together became

  421. a core part

  422. of Jewish life.

  423. It was done every week

  424. when they would gather

  425. in the synagogue.

  426. Jesus Himself

  427. participated in this practice

  428. and you may know

  429. that He launched

  430. His public mission

  431. during the weekly reading

  432. of the Scripture

  433. from the scroll of Isaiah

  434. when He said

  435. today in your hearing

  436. this Scripture

  437. is being fulfilled.

  438. And this is why

  439. the Apostle Paul

  440. writes to Timothy

  441. and says devote yourself

  442. to the public reading

  443. of Scripture

  444. and to its preaching

  445. and its teaching.

  446. Do you see why

  447. these people

  448. are listening

  449. so attentively?

  450. Because they know

  451. the pain

  452. of forgetting

  453. their identity.

  454. They know the pain

  455. of losing track

  456. of what story

  457. they're living in.

  458. They know the pain

  459. of not knowing

  460. who they are

  461. and where they came from

  462. and where they're going

  463. and how they're supposed

  464. to live

  465. in light of that.

  466. So I want you to look

  467. at the context

  468. and the posture

  469. for how they're listening

  470. to the Bible.

  471. It says in verse 4

  472. that Ezra the teacher

  473. of the law

  474. stood on a high

  475. wooden platform

  476. built for the occasion

  477. and then in verse 5

  478. it says Ezra opened

  479. the book

  480. and all the people

  481. could see him

  482. because he was

  483. standing above them

  484. and as he opened it

  485. the people all stood up.

  486. Now this high platform

  487. was practical

  488. so that everybody

  489. could see

  490. and everybody could hear

  491. but it was also

  492. symbolic

  493. to say that the word

  494. of God

  495. is above us.

  496. This word of God

  497. is coming down

  498. to us from on high.

  499. It has an authority.

  500. Now think about that.

  501. What's the first question

  502. that Satan asks

  503. human beings

  504. in the scriptures

  505. in Genesis 3?

  506. He says

  507. did God really say?

  508. It's the first question.

  509. Did God really say?

  510. And in that moment

  511. he's tempting

  512. human beings

  513. to rise above

  514. the word of God

  515. to put themselves

  516. over the word

  517. as the critics

  518. of scripture

  519. and to put themselves

  520. in a position

  521. where they are

  522. the judge

  523. and the jury

  524. about the truth

  525. of God.

  526. But these people

  527. in Nehemiah 8

  528. are doing the opposite

  529. of that.

  530. They're sitting

  531. in humility

  532. under the book.

  533. They're standing

  534. with reverence

  535. before the book

  536. because they know

  537. that these are not

  538. mere human words

  539. from Moses

  540. but that this is

  541. the eternal word

  542. of God.

  543. You're supposed

  544. to say amen

  545. at that point.

  546. And the reason

  547. I know you're supposed

  548. to say amen

  549. is in verse 6

  550. where it says

  551. Ezra praised

  552. the Lord

  553. the great God

  554. and all the people

  555. lifted their hands

  556. and responded

  557. amen and amen.

  558. Then they bowed down

  559. and worshipped the Lord

  560. with their faces

  561. to the ground.

  562. I'm not making that up.

  563. Like it's not

  564. just my preference.

  565. It's biblical.

  566. Notice that Ezra

  567. is not standing up there

  568. giving his perspectives

  569. on world history

  570. or giving his opinions

  571. on current events.

  572. He's simply

  573. reading the book,

  574. explaining the book,

  575. applying the book.

  576. And notice that

  577. the book

  578. is neither this

  579. cold cadaver

  580. in a lab

  581. that you

  582. clinically cut on

  583. nor is it

  584. a literary composition

  585. in a classroom

  586. that you critically

  587. comment on.

  588. When the people

  589. heard the book

  590. it says

  591. they along with Ezra

  592. praised the Lord

  593. who is both

  594. the author

  595. and the subject

  596. of this book.

  597. This moment

  598. is thick

  599. with meaning

  600. because the word

  601. of Yahweh

  602. the word

  603. of this great God

  604. who has spoken

  605. is speaking now.

  606. The word

  607. of I am

  608. who I am.

  609. this God

  610. who is infinite,

  611. eternal,

  612. almighty,

  613. holy,

  614. and majestic

  615. is speaking

  616. to us

  617. and he's telling us

  618. the true story

  619. of the world.

  620. He's telling us

  621. who we are

  622. and revealing to us

  623. where we're going

  624. and showing us

  625. how we're supposed

  626. to live.

  627. And this tells us

  628. that this is a glorious God

  629. who's worthy

  630. of our hands

  631. being lifted up

  632. in praise to him.

  633. And I know that makes

  634. some of you uncomfortable

  635. but it's right here.

  636. This is a glorious God

  637. who's worthy

  638. of our loud shouts

  639. of amen,

  640. amen

  641. which means

  642. yes,

  643. yes,

  644. I need that,

  645. I want that.

  646. May that be true

  647. in our lives.

  648. You want to practice?

  649. Let's say

  650. amen,

  651. amen,

  652. amen,

  653. amen.

  654. This glorious God

  655. is worthy

  656. of our bent knees

  657. in humility

  658. and reverence

  659. before him.

  660. He's worthy

  661. of our bowed faces

  662. and our bowed heads

  663. with awe

  664. and wonder

  665. and worship

  666. in his presence.

  667. And as I read this

  668. I say

  669. may the spirit of God

  670. loosen our hands

  671. and loosen our tongues

  672. and loosen our knees

  673. and loosen our faces

  674. in worship

  675. because this is how

  676. Jesus read his Bible.

  677. Did you know

  678. this is how

  679. Jesus read his Bible

  680. as a devout

  681. and passionate Israelite?

  682. He listened attentively

  683. because he discerned

  684. in these words

  685. the authoritative voice

  686. of the Lord

  687. and the story

  688. of the kingdom of God

  689. breaking into this

  690. broken world

  691. from heaven

  692. to earth.

  693. So,

  694. do you want to hear

  695. from God?

  696. Bring out the book.

  697. Open the book.

  698. Listen humbly

  699. and reverently

  700. to the book.

  701. Let the book

  702. sit above you.

  703. Get yourself

  704. below

  705. and beneath

  706. this book.

  707. That's the only way

  708. you're going to find

  709. the Bible

  710. to be reliable

  711. to you.

  712. And may it be said

  713. of us

  714. that when we

  715. Christchurch

  716. opened this book

  717. we praised the Lord

  718. the great God

  719. and we all lifted

  720. our hands

  721. and responded

  722. amen and amen

  723. and we bowed down

  724. to worship the Lord

  725. with our faces

  726. to the ground.

  727. If you read the Bible

  728. in any other way

  729. in any other context

  730. with any other posture

  731. it's not going to

  732. make sense to you.

  733. So,

  734. they're listening

  735. attentively

  736. but also it says

  737. that they're

  738. interpreting

  739. faithfully.

  740. They're interpreting

  741. faithfully.

  742. It says in verse 7

  743. that the Levites

  744. instructed the people

  745. in the law

  746. while the people

  747. were standing there

  748. and they read

  749. from the book

  750. of the law

  751. of God

  752. making it clear

  753. and giving the meaning

  754. so that the people

  755. understood what was

  756. being read.

  757. Now,

  758. they're not

  759. just at home

  760. alone

  761. in a comfy

  762. chair

  763. with a cup of coffee

  764. reading their Bible

  765. by themselves

  766. which is great.

  767. You should keep

  768. doing that

  769. but they're gathered

  770. together in person

  771. with real people

  772. who have faces

  773. and they're not

  774. at home

  775. or on their phone

  776. Googling questions

  777. you know,

  778. finding anonymous

  779. answers on the internet

  780. and believing the first

  781. thing that they click.

  782. Right?

  783. That drives pastors crazy.

  784. It's like

  785. when you go to your doctor

  786. you're like

  787. I've been studying

  788. WebMD

  789. you know

  790. and I have like

  791. five minutes of knowledge

  792. about this.

  793. No,

  794. it says that they

  795. gather together

  796. and Ezra's in the pulpit

  797. and they have 13

  798. teachers on the platform

  799. and 13 Levites

  800. in the pews

  801. these are the

  802. trustworthy and trained

  803. authorized and accountable

  804. interpreters of the scriptures

  805. and what they're doing

  806. is a combination

  807. of preaching

  808. Q&A

  809. small groups

  810. and Sunday school.

  811. They're basically

  812. reading the text

  813. in Hebrew

  814. they're translating it

  815. into Aramaic

  816. which is the

  817. common language

  818. of the people

  819. and they're turning around

  820. after like each chapter

  821. going

  822. do you understand?

  823. And the people say

  824. actually no I don't

  825. I have a question

  826. about this

  827. or a question about

  828. that

  829. and so they go on

  830. to explain

  831. the original

  832. intended meaning

  833. of the text

  834. the plain sense

  835. of the passage

  836. so that everybody

  837. can comprehend it

  838. and apply it

  839. to their lives.

  840. The technical term

  841. for that

  842. is exegesis

  843. it means to

  844. draw out

  845. what is actually

  846. already there

  847. in the text.

  848. The opposite of that

  849. is eisegesis

  850. which is to read

  851. your own ideas

  852. into the text.

  853. We do not want

  854. to do

  855. eisegesis

  856. we want

  857. to do

  858. exegesis

  859. we're not

  860. coming to the

  861. Bible

  862. to see ourselves

  863. reflected back

  864. to us

  865. as in a mirror

  866. we're coming

  867. to the Bible

  868. to draw out

  869. the truth

  870. of God

  871. that's there

  872. and I need

  873. to press on this

  874. because in the

  875. digital age

  876. and this

  877. Amazon culture

  878. that we live in

  879. you click a button

  880. and a book

  881. shows up like an hour

  882. later on your doorstep

  883. magically

  884. these books

  885. that are called

  886. Christian books

  887. with that label

  888. or we have blogs

  889. or podcasts

  890. or sermons

  891. and we need to ask

  892. more critical questions

  893. is this book

  894. giving me

  895. a feel good

  896. message

  897. with some life hacks

  898. or is it giving me

  899. the truth

  900. of the word of God

  901. is what I'm taking

  902. in right now

  903. drawing out

  904. what the Bible

  905. meant

  906. and what it means

  907. or is it imposing

  908. its own meaning

  909. on the Bible

  910. and baptizing

  911. the dominant paradigm

  912. and giving to me

  913. the modern

  914. or postmodern

  915. zeitgeist

  916. is what's coming

  917. into my eyes

  918. and what's coming

  919. into my ears

  920. aligning

  921. with the prophets

  922. and the apostles

  923. can Moses

  924. and David

  925. and Isaiah

  926. and Ezra

  927. can Jesus

  928. and Peter

  929. and Paul

  930. and James

  931. hear this

  932. and say amen

  933. and amen

  934. that is such

  935. an important question

  936. for us to ask

  937. the gospel

  938. of John

    John 1 chapter mention

  939. chapter 1

  940. says that Jesus

  941. is the eternal

  942. word of God

  943. made flesh

  944. he's the final

  945. word of God

  946. and so

  947. it's important

  948. for us

  949. to think about

  950. how did the word

  951. of God

  952. interpret the word

  953. of God

  954. right when Jesus

  955. read the Bible

  956. how did he interpret

  957. the Bible

  958. well quickly

  959. you know

  960. when he was tempted

  961. by the devil

  962. Jesus says

  963. it is written

  964. and then he quotes

  965. Deuteronomy

  966. which he has memorized

  967. and he says

  968. man shall not live

  969. on bread alone

  970. but what

  971. on every word

  972. that proceeds

  973. from the mouth

  974. of God

  975. that's our spiritual food

  976. that's our spiritual

  977. nourishment

  978. is the words

  979. of God

  980. and he opens

  981. the sermon

  982. on the mount

  983. and what does he say

  984. he says

  985. do not think

  986. that I've come

  987. to abolish

  988. the law

  989. and the prophets

  990. that I've come

  991. to tear them down

  992. that I've come

  993. to deconstruct them

  994. no I've not come

  995. to abolish them

  996. but to fulfill them

  997. for truly I tell you

  998. until heaven

  999. and earth disappear

  1000. not the smallest letter

  1001. not the least stroke

  1002. of a pen

  1003. will by any means

  1004. disappear from the law

  1005. until everything

  1006. is accomplished

  1007. therefore Jesus says

  1008. anyone who sets aside

  1009. one of the least

  1010. of these commands

  1011. and teaches others

  1012. accordingly

  1013. will be called

  1014. least in the kingdom

  1015. of heaven

  1016. whoever unties

  1017. or relaxes

  1018. or plays fast

  1019. and loose

  1020. or tries to accommodate

  1021. this word

1022. to our time and place

  1023. you're going to be

  1024. least in the kingdom

  1025. of heaven

  1026. Jesus says

  1027. but whoever practices

  1028. and teaches

  1029. these commands

  1030. will be called

  1031. great in the kingdom

  1032. of heaven

  1033. and Jesus continues

  1034. on in the sermon

  1035. on the mount

  1036. taking issue

  1037. with illegitimate

  1038. interpretations

  1039. of the bible

  1040. confronting head on

  1041. erroneous interpretations

  1042. of this book

  1043. he says later

1044. in the gospel of Matthew

  1045. you're in error

  1046. because you don't know

  1047. the scriptures

1048. or the power of God

1049. he says in the gospel

  1050. of John

  1051. scripture

  1052. cannot be

  1053. broken

  1054. so if you believe

  1055. Jesus is

  1056. who he claimed

  1057. to be

  1058. then we've got

  1059. to honor the fact

  1060. that Jesus quoted

  1061. and alluded to

  1062. almost every

1063. book in the Old Testament

  1064. authoritatively

  1065. and that Jesus

  1066. reads the bible

  1067. with respect

  1068. to the original

  1069. intended meaning

  1070. of the text

  1071. but what's so

  1072. astonishing

  1073. astonishing

  1074. it's not so much

  1075. that

  1076. every faithful

  1077. Israelite

  1078. did that

  1079. what's astonishing

  1080. is the way

  1081. that Jesus

  1082. interprets

  1083. the story

  1084. of the bible

  1085. because he

  1086. basically says

  1087. I'm the hero

  1088. of this story

  1089. I'm the golden

  1090. key that unlocks

  1091. this book

  1092. he says in

  1093. John 5

  1094. you study the

  1095. scriptures diligently

  1096. because you think

  1097. that in them

  1098. you have eternal

  1099. life

  1100. these are the

  1101. very scriptures

  1102. that testify

  1103. about me

  1104. if you believed

  1105. Moses

  1106. you would believe

  1107. me

  1108. for he wrote

  1109. about

  1110. me

  1111. he goes on

  1112. and he

  1113. says

  1114. that this is

  1115. after his

  1116. resurrection

  1117. from the dead

  1118. he meets

  1119. with two

  1120. disciples

  1121. and it says

  1122. that beginning

  1123. with Moses

  1124. and all the

  1125. prophets

  1126. he explained

  1127. to them

  1128. what was said

  1129. and all the

  1130. scriptures

  1131. concerning

  1132. himself

  1133. and then he

  1134. meets with

  1135. all of his

  1136. disciples

  1137. and he says

  1138. everything

  1139. must be

  1140. fulfilled

  1141. that is

  1142. written

  1143. about me

  1144. in the

  1145. law of

  1146. Moses

  1147. the prophets

  1148. and the

  1149. Psalms

  1150. now you

  1151. might object

  1152. to that

  1153. and say

  1154. well the

  1155. gospels

  1156. that you're

  1157. quoting from

  1158. these are

  1159. legends

  1160. right

  1161. these are

  1162. myths

  1163. that the

  1164. church

  1165. made up

  1166. we don't

  1167. really have

  1168. the real

  1169. Jesus

  1170. of history

  1171. he's been

  1172. lost

  1173. in the

  1174. midst

  1175. of time

  1176. and none

  1177. of what

  1178. he said

  1179. none

  1180. of what

  1181. he did

  1182. can be

  1183. historically

  1184. validated

  1185. but I

  1186. would just

  1187. like to

  1188. invite you

  1189. to begin

  1190. examining

  1191. the original

  1192. documents

  1193. and sources

  1194. I think

  1195. we actually

  1196. have a

  1197. slide

  1198. if we

  1199. want to

  1200. pull that

  1201. up

  1202. what

  1203. you'll

  1204. find

  1205. is

  1206. overwhelming

  1207. an overwhelming

  1208. amount

  1209. of evidence

  1210. for the

  1211. life

  1212. and the

  1213. death

  1214. and the

  1215. resurrection

  1216. of

  1217. Jesus

  1218. when you

  1219. think about

  1220. the copies

  1221. that we

  1222. have

  1223. and the

  1224. time it

  1225. took

  1226. between the

  1227. original

  1228. and the

  1229. copies

  1230. and the

  1231. amount of

  1232. manuscripts

  1233. that we

  1234. have

  1235. compared with

  1236. everything else

  1237. that we

  1238. know in

  1239. the

  1240. ancient

  1241. world

  1242. I think

  1243. we'd have

  1244. to say

  1245. that Jesus

  1246. Christ

  1247. and the

  1248. resurrection

  1249. of Jesus

  1250. Christ

  1251. is the

  1252. most

  1253. and best

  1254. attested

  1255. fact

  1256. in ancient

  1257. history

  1258. I love

  1259. this

  1260. that I read

  1261. this week

  1262. from Andrew

  1263. Wilson

  1264. he says

  1265. ultimately

  1266. our trust

  1267. in the

  1268. Bible

  1269. stems

  1270. from our

  1271. trust in

  1272. Jesus

  1273. Christ

  1274. the

  1275. man

  1276. who

  1277. is

  1278. God

  1279. the

  1280. king

  1281. of

  1282. the

  1283. world

  1284. the

  1285. crucified

  1286. risen

  1287. and

  1288. exalted

  1289. rescuer

  1290. I don't

  1291. trust in

  1292. Jesus

  1293. because I

  1294. trust in

  1295. the

  1296. Bible

  1297. I trust

  1298. the

  1299. Bible

  1300. because I

  1301. trust

  1302. in

  1303. Jesus

  1304. I

  1305. love

  1306. him

  1307. and I've

  1308. decided

  1309. to follow

  1310. him

  1311. so if

  1312. he

  1313. talks

  1314. and

  1315. acts

  1316. as if

  1317. the

  1318. Bible

  1319. is

  1320. trustworthy

  1321. authoritative

  1322. good

  1323. helpful

  1324. and

  1325. powerful

  1326. I

  1327. will

  1328. too

  1329. even

  1330. if

  1331. some

  1332. of my

  1333. questions

  1334. remain

  1382. right

  1383. they're

  1387. they're

  1406. look at

  1409. then

  1410. Nehemiah

  1411. the governor

  1412. Ezra

  1413. the priest

  1415. of the law

  1416. and the

  1417. Levites

  1418. who were

  1419. instructing

  1420. the people

  1421. said to

  1422. them all

  1423. this day

  1424. is holy

  1425. to the

  1426. Lord

  1427. your God

  1428. do not

  1429. mourn

  1430. or weep

  1431. for all

  1432. the people

  1433. have been

  1434. weeping

  1435. as they

  1436. listened

  1437. to the

  1438. words

  1439. of the

  1440. law

  1441. why

  1442. were

  1443. they

  1444. weeping

  1445. this word

  1446. had been

  1447. reverently

  1448. read

  1449. it had

  1450. been

  1451. painstakingly

  1452. interpreted

  1453. it had

  1454. been

  1455. worshipfully

  1456. received

  1457. and now

  1458. they're

  1459. beginning

  1460. to weep

  1461. over

  1462. their

  1463. laxity

  1464. they're

  1465. beginning

  1466. to weep

  1467. over how

  1468. loosely

  1469. they've

  1470. sat

  1471. to the

  1472. things

  1473. of

  1474. God

  1475. they're

  1476. beginning

  1477. to weep

  1478. because

  1479. they're

  1480. convicted

  1481. of their

  1482. sin

  1483. and their

  1484. disobedience

  1485. before

  1486. God

  1487. they're

  1488. beginning

  1489. to weep

  1490. because

  1491. they've

  1492. not acted

  1493. in accordance

  1494. with

  1495. God's

  1496. word

  1497. they're

  1498. grieved

  1499. because

  1500. they realize

  1501. that they've

  1502. grieved

  1503. the heart

  1504. of God

  1505. and they've

  1506. quenched

  1507. the spirit

  1508. of God

  1509. if there's

  1510. one thing

  1511. that the

  1512. Bible

  1513. can be

  1514. relied

  1515. upon

  1516. to do

  1517. it's

  1518. to show

  1519. us

  1520. that

  1521. all the

  1522. great

  1523. problems

  1524. of the

  1525. world

  1526. they're

  1527. not

  1528. out

  1529. there

  1530. they're

  1531. right

  1532. here

  1533. and

  1534. that's

  1535. why

  1536. they're

  1537. weeping

  1538. and

  1539. through

  1540. the word

  1541. of God

  1542. and through

  1543. the spirit

  1544. of God

  1545. God's

  1546. grace

  1547. begins

  1548. to move

  1549. upon

  1550. these

  1551. people

  1552. and

  1553. the spirit

  1554. of God

  1555. begins

  1556. to awaken

  1557. the sleepy

  1558. and enliven

  1559. the dead

  1560. and quicken

  1561. the lethargic

  1562. right

  1563. all scripture

  1564. is God

  1565. breathed

  1566. Paul says

  1567. and it's

  1568. useful

  1569. for teaching

  1570. rebuking

  1571. correcting

  1572. and training

  1573. and righteousness

  1574. and that's

  1575. what's

  1576. happening

  1577. right now

  1578. they're

  1579. being taught

  1580. and corrected

  1581. and rebuked

  1582. and trained

  1583. in righteousness

  1584. not as

  1585. detached

  1586. objective

  1587. critics

  1588. who are

  1589. just

  1590. receiving

  1591. a bunch

  1592. of

  1593. information

  1594. but as

  1595. engaged

  1596. subjective

  1597. characters

  1598. who are

  1599. being

  1600. invited

  1601. to be

  1602. involved

  1603. as the

  1604. people

  1605. of God

  1606. in

  1607. the

  1608. unfolding

  1609. story

  1610. of God

  1611. but

  1612. they're

  1613. not only

  1614. weeping

  1615. their

  1616. weeping

  1617. is replaced

  1618. with joy

  1619. it says

  1620. in verse

  1621. 10

  1622. Nehemiah

  1623. said

  1624. go and

  1625. enjoy

  1626. choice

  1627. food

  1628. and sweet

  1629. drinks

  1630. which is

  1631. why we

  1632. have

  1633. donuts

  1634. and coffee

  1635. after church

  1636. he says

  1637. go and

  1638. do that

  1639. because

  1640. this day

  1641. is holy

  1642. to our

  1643. Lord

  1644. do not

  1645. grieve

  1646. for the

  1647. joy

  1648. of the

  1649. Lord

  1650. is

  1651. your

  1652. strength

  1653. at this

  1654. moment

  1655. the

  1656. eternal

  1657. and

  1658. infinite

  1659. joy

  1660. of

  1661. the

  1662. Lord

  1663. almighty

  1664. is

  1665. beginning

  1666. to

  1667. flow

  1668. into

  1669. the

  1670. people

  1671. of

  1672. God

  1673. and

  1674. give

  1675. them

  1676. strength

  1677. for

  1678. their

  1679. souls

  1680. and

  1681. to

  1682. fortify

  1683. them

  1684. in

  1685. their

  1686. inner

  1687. being

  1688. why

  1689. is

  1690. that

  1691. because

  1692. they

  1693. celebrated

  1694. with

  1695. great

  1696. joy

  1697. because

  1698. they

  1699. now

  1700. understood

  1701. the

  1702. words

  1703. that

  1704. had

  1705. been

  1706. made

  1707. known

  1708. to

  1709. them

  1710. the

  1711. way

  1712. to

  1713. get

  1714. the

  1715. joy

  1716. of

  1717. the

  1718. Lord

  1719. is

  1720. to

  1721. understand

  1722. the

  1723. word

  1724. of

  1725. the

  1726. Lord

  1727. you

  1728. know

  1729. what's

  1730. amazing

  1731. is that

  1732. this was

  1733. just

  1734. day

  1735. one

  1736. they

  1737. stayed

  1738. for

  1739. seven

  1740. days

  1741. to

  1742. read

  1743. God's

  1744. word

  1745. like

  1746. this

  1747. and

  1748. why

  1749. did

  1750. they

  1751. want

  1752. more

  1753. and

  1754. more

  1755. of

  1756. the

  1757. Lord's

  1758. word

  1759. and

  1760. more

  1761. and more

  1762. of

  1763. his

  1764. day

  1765. because

  1766. they

  1767. were

  1768. preparing

  1769. themselves

  1770. for

  1771. the

  1772. coming

  1773. day

  1774. of

  1775. atonement

  1776. they

  1777. say

  1778. look

  1779. don't

  1780. be

  1781. so

  1782. sad

  1783. stop

  1784. crying

  1785. and

  1786. start

  1787. partying

  1788. because

  1789. the

  1790. holiest

  1791. day

  1792. of

  1793. the

  1794. year

  1795. is

  1796. coming

  1797. in

  1798. a

  1799. couple

  1800. of

  1801. days

  1802. when

  1803. the

  1804. great

  1805. high

  1806. priest

  1807. is

  1808. going

  1809. to

  1810. take

  1811. the

  1812. blood

  1813. of

  1814. the

  1815. sacrificial

  1816. lamb

  1817. into

  1818. the

  1819. very

  1820. presence

  1821. of

  1822. God

  1823. and

  1824. the

  1825. holy

  1826. of

  1827. holies

  1828. and

  1829. he's

  1830. going

  1831. to

  1832. make

  1833. an

  1834. atonement

  1835. to

  1836. cleanse

  1837. us

  1838. all

  1839. from

  1840. these

  1841. sins

  1842. that

  1843. we're

  1844. weeping

  1845. about

  1846. so

  1847. stop

  1848. weeping

  1849. this is a

  1850. time for

  1851. joy

  1852. it's a

  1853. time to

  1854. celebrate

  1855. the

  1856. God of

  1857. all

  1858. grace

  1859. and to

  1860. let

  1861. his

  1862. joy

  1863. become

  1864. our

  1865. joy

  1866. and

  1867. friends

  1868. as we

  1869. prepare to

  1870. come to

  1871. this

  1872. table

  1873. we have

  1874. a much

  1875. greater

  1876. atonement

  1877. to rejoice

  1878. in

  1879. today

  1880. we

  1881. we have

  1882. an

  1883. atonement

  1884. that's

  1885. not

  1886. symbolic

  1887. but

  1888. that's

  1889. actual

  1890. we have

  1891. an

  1892. atonement

  1893. that's

  1894. not

  1895. temporary

  1896. but

  1897. it's

  1898. eternal

  1899. the

  1900. law

  1901. of

  1902. God

  1903. should

  1904. come

  1905. and

  1906. make

  1907. us

  1908. aware

  1909. of

  1910. the

  1911. great

  1912. and

  1913. deep

  1914. problem

  1915. of

  1916. our

  1917. sins

  1918. so

  1919. that

  1920. we

  1921. weep

  1922. but

  1923. the

  1924. gospel

  1925. of

  1926. God

  1927. brings

  1928. us

  1929. this

  1930. great

  1931. solution

  1932. of

  1933. the

  1934. priest

  1935. and

  1936. the

  1937. sacrifice

  1938. Jesus

  1939. Christ

  1940. who

  1941. cleanses

  1942. us

  1943. of

  1944. our

  1945. sins

  1946. and

  1947. makes

  1948. us

  1949. one

  1950. with

  1951. God

  1952. and

  1953. that's

  1954. why

  1955. I

  1956. believe

  1957. the

  1958. Bible

  1959. is a

  1960. reliable

  1961. book

  1962. because

  1963. it's

  1964. telling

  1965. us

  1966. about

  1967. the

  1968. one

  1969. author

  1970. the

  1971. one

  1972. storyline

  1973. the

  1974. one

  1975. subject

  1976. of

  1977. the

  1978. book

  1979. bring

  1980. out

  1981. the

  1982. book

  1983. open

  1984. the

  1985. book

  1986. read

  1987. the

  1988. book

  1989. understand

  1990. that

  1991. this

  1992. whole

  1993. book

  1994. is

  1995. about

  1996. Christ

  1997. and

  1998. him

  1999. crucified

  2000. let's

  2001. read

  2002. the

  2003. book

  2004. in

  2005. the

  2006. name

  2007. of

  2008. the

  2009. Father

  2010. Son

  2011. and

  2012. Holy

  2013. Spirit

  2014. Amen
