  5. Our reading is from the prophet Isaiah chapter 6 verses 1 through 8 as printed in your liturgy.

    Isaiah 6:1–8

  6. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne,

  7. and the train of his robe filled the temple.

  8. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings.

  9. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,

  10. and with two they were flying.

  11. And they were calling to one another,

  12. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty.

  13. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  14. At the sound of their voices, the doorposts and thresholds shook,

  15. and the temple was filled with smoke.

  16. Woe to me, I cried, I am ruined, for I am a man of unclean lips,

  17. and I live among a people of unclean lips,

  18. and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.

  19. Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand,

  20. which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

  21. With it he touched my mouth and said,

  22. See, this has touched your lips.

  23. Your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.

  24. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

  25. Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?

  26. And I said, Here am I, send me.

  27. This is the word of the Lord.

  28. Thanks be to God.

  29. Well, good morning.

  30. My name's Andrew.

  31. I'm one of the pastors here.

  32. And it's good to be with you this morning.

  33. It was fun at Boxes of Love yesterday.

  34. Man, people can move really fast.

  35. I was on the tape.

  36. This is the last part of the bottleneck, right?

  37. And you've got to tape those boxes shut.

  38. And this guy, he said, Hey, you come do the tape with me.

  39. I was like, Oh, shoot.

  40. And he was a machine.

  41. He was like, And I was like, Sorry, sorry.

  42. But everyone else, you did such a great job.

  43. And I can't wait for it again next year.

  44. What are we doing?

  45. Okay, we're preaching.

  46. So you may have noticed we're in this fall series.

  47. We were in this fall series called Explore God.

  48. We joined with hundreds of other churches in the Bay Area,

  49. exploring God for seven weeks,

  50. asking big questions.

  51. And there were two weeks, though,

  52. in between our Explore God series and Thanksgiving,

  53. where Jonathan and I wanted to just preach sermons

  54. that spoke particularly to our specific moment

  55. in this moment of our history as a church,

  56. Christ Church East Bay.

  57. So last week, Jonathan announced our capital campaign

  58. to raise $600,000 to pay off what we owe

  59. on this historic, strategic church property

  60. by the end of next year.

  61. And another thing that's going on in our churches,

  62. as you know, we're looking for a worship director.

  63. And I'm the interim worship director right now.

  64. So Jonathan, last week, he preached on,

  65. you know, he preached a sermon

  66. that most pastors never want to preach, right?

  67. He preached on giving and generosity,

  68. about how the ancient people of God

  69. gave gratefully and cheerfully and generously

  70. to build a place of worship,

  71. to build the tabernacle.

  72. And if you think that the main point, though,

  73. of that story was generosity,

  74. just generosity toward a house of worship,

  75. I want to remind you this morning

  76. about how that story ended.

  77. Because remember, not only did they give generously,

  78. not only did they build that tabernacle,

  79. but more importantly,

  80. when the tabernacle was completed, what happened?

  81. The glory of the Lord fell upon

  82. and filled that tabernacle in a thick cloud.

  83. The point of that story about the building of the tabernacle

  84. and all the extravagant giving

  85. that went toward that capital campaign project,

  86. it wasn't just a story of generosity.

  87. The point was that for God's people,

  88. there was nothing more valuable to them,

  89. nothing more worthy of their investment

  90. than the worship of God and his presence among them.

  91. Like see, generosity toward the church is one thing,

  92. but apart from worship,

  93. apart from a passion for the presence of God.

  94. If we give and give and give,

  95. even with lavishness,

  96. but God is not wanted and worshiped here,

  97. and thus God is not pleased to dwell here amongst us,

  98. then we could raise that 600K,

  99. we could raise a trillion,

  100. but it will only be toward a four-walled waste of money.

  101. If there are no praises here for our God to inhabit.

  102. As King David said in Psalm 22, verse 3,

    Psalms 22:3

  103. you are holy,

  104. and literally it says,

  105. you inhabit the hallelujahs of your people.

  106. You inhabit the hallelujahs of your people.

  107. You sit enthroned in their praises.

  108. So Christ Church family,

  109. yes, we want to be generous,

  110. and yes, we do believe God wants us to preach the gospel

  111. and minister here in this historic and strategic location

  112. in Berkeley, the Bay, and beyond,

  113. and hopefully we will call this property,

  114. you know, truly our own without debt,

  115. but make no mistake,

  116. if God is not worshipped here,

  117. if his glory is not beheld here,

  118. and if his presence doesn't fill this place,

  119. and he is not enthroned in our praises,

  120. then I hope he sabotages our capital campaign.

  121. I hope he sabotages all our plans for this building

  122. and for this church

  123. if we do not worship him here in his presence.

  124. So the question isn't simply,

  125. will Christ Church,

  126. will we as a church family be generous enough

  127. to raise 600K?

  128. The question is, will we worship?

  129. Will we worship here?

  130. This is my question for us today,

  131. as your pastor,

  132. as your interim worship director,

  133. as we look ahead to owning this place debt-free,

  134. and as we look for a new worship director,

  135. and as we're in this season of re-exploring, right,

  136. and rediscovering the heart of worship,

  137. apart from all the bells and whistles

  138. maybe many of us got used to,

  139. will we worship?

  140. Will we fill this place with the kind of praise

  141. that the holy, holy, holy God desires to inhabit?

  142. And in case you're wondering what that might look like,

  143. that's why we had Cherubha read that passage this morning

  144. from Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  145. Isaiah describing his famous vision of the Lord.

  146. I saw the Lord, he says,

  147. enthroned amidst hundreds of hallelujahs,

  148. hundreds of holy hallelujahs.

  149. So what we're gonna do this morning

  150. is we're gonna walk through this passage,

  151. kinda like I'm gonna be your tour guide,

  152. and I just wanna point out to you

  153. what it means to be a worshiping church.

  154. You know, this week, this passage,

  155. it just really wrecked me.

  156. There's just so much that I saw in it,

  157. that God spoke to me in it,

  158. and I had no idea how to organize all those thoughts.

  159. And I trembled to consider

  160. being up here preaching this text

  161. with my own unclean lips.

  162. How do I preach this holy, holy, holy God?

  163. But I think we'll find out in Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  164. what kind of a God he is

  165. and how he enables even preachers like myself

  166. to come before him, to serve him,

  167. and to fill his church that we might serve him as well.

  168. So, you know, I haven't prayed yet.

  169. I wanna do that this morning.

  170. And I think it's fitting, actually,

  171. to pray on my knees.

  172. I don't normally do this here,

  173. and I don't mean to make you uncomfortable

  174. or to make this a show,

  175. but I think we need this.

  176. Father, you know,

  177. this is gonna be a different kind of sermon.

  178. Father, who am I

  179. to preach your glory

  180. and your holiness

  181. and your majesty

  182. with my unclean lips?

  183. And who are we

  184. to come before you

  185. to take the body of your son

  186. and his blood upon our lips,

  187. our unclean lips,

  188. as a church?

  189. Lord, open our eyes.

  190. Would you set before us

  191. your immense holiness?

  192. Would we be stunned, Lord God,

  193. in your presence,

  194. arrested by your holiness,

  195. would we catch this vision?

  196. Would we see you?

  197. Would we encounter you

  198. as the God that you are?

  199. And would you fill us with praise,

  200. reverent praise,

  201. but also confident praise,

  202. for you have provided the way

  203. before your throne

  204. in Christ Jesus.

  205. and would you

  206. so fill our hearts

  207. with adoration for Christ,

  208. who has brought us near

  209. to the holy God.

  210. And Lord, as we always pray,

  211. would this be a sacred place,

  212. Christ's church?

  213. Would you inhabit

  214. our hallelujahs?

  215. would our praises go out,

  216. would they go forth?

  217. Would the nations be glad

  218. along with us

  219. because of the great salvation

  220. you've offered us in Christ?

  221. So be honored, Lord God,

  222. in the preaching of your word,

  223. and give us eyes to see,

  224. hearts that are longing,

  225. in Jesus' name.

  226. Amen.

  227. I'm just gonna walk us through

  228. this text,

  229. and I want us to have worship

  230. on our minds.

  231. Jonathan sent me something

  232. really kind of humorous,

  233. but also like so profound

  234. this week

  235. from a pastor friend of his.

  236. He said,

  237. you know,

  238. if you ask a typical churchgoer

  239. you know,

  240. just how they experienced

  241. Sunday worship

  242. or what they expected

  243. to experience

  244. at Sunday worship,

  245. they might say,

  246. well, you know,

  247. there's gonna be some music.

  248. I kinda like the song selection

  249. this week compared to last week.

  250. The pastor had, you know,

  251. two or three points,

  252. and this is something funny

  253. that he said,

  254. and then the donuts

  255. were kinda nice.

  256. Right.

  257. But if you ask Isaiah,

  258. right,

  259. if you ask Isaiah

  260. what he experienced

  261. in worship,

  262. he would say,

  263. I saw God.

  264. I saw God

  265. for who he was.

  266. and then I saw myself

  267. for who I am

  268. before him

  269. and it was terrifying,

  270. but I also saw his mercy

  271. and I saw my calling

  272. from that day forward.

  273. I was transformed

  274. because I saw God.

  275. every Sunday

  276. when we come here,

  277. we don't come here

  278. to mess around.

  279. We come here

  280. to encounter God.

  281. I teach my girls this

  282. every Sunday.

  283. I say,

  284. girls,

  285. what day is today?

  286. And I've trained them

  287. to say,

  288. it's the Lord's day.

  289. It's the Lord's day.

  290. And I say,

  291. and what do we do

  292. on the Lord's day?

  293. And they say,

  294. we worship God.

  295. We worship God.

  296. This is not something

  297. to take lightly.

  298. We worship

  299. the holy,

  300. holy,

  301. holy God.

  302. So let's see

  303. what Isaiah saw

  304. in Isaiah chapter six.

  305. Now look with me

  306. at verse one.

  307. This isn't some fantasy

  308. that he's having,

  309. some mythical fantasy

  310. that he's trying to make up.

  311. He is rooting this

  312. in a historical moment.

  313. In the year

  314. that King Uzziah died,

  315. I saw the Lord,

  316. he says.

  317. High and exalted,

  318. seated on a throne,

  319. and the train of his robe

  320. filled the temple.

  321. There's a lot packed

  322. into this right here.

  323. There's a lot going on

  324. in this historical moment.

  325. See,

  326. because King Uzziah,

  327. you could argue,

  328. was one of the greatest kings

  329. of Israel.

  330. He's the king

  331. that reigned

  332. the second longest

  333. of all the kings,

  334. and the king that reigned

  335. longer than him,

  336. Manasseh,

  337. he was wicked.

  338. He was awful.

  339. He was one of the worst.

  340. All right?

  341. But King Uzziah,

  342. he reigned for 52 years,

  343. and Israel prospered,

  344. and Israel followed,

  345. and worshipped,

  346. and feared the Lord.

  347. Very good years.

  348. You could read about it

  349. in 2 Chronicles 26.

  350. He reigned from the time

  351. he was 16.

  352. He listened to the priest

  353. who taught him.

  354. He sought the Lord.

  355. He was victorious in battle.

  356. The nations paid him tribute.

  357. He was famous.

  358. The soil was fertile.

  359. There were large herds.

  360. He built many monuments

  361. and structures.

  362. He fortified the nation of Israel.

  363. And he had a whole huge army,

  364. mighty warriors,

  365. to defend his people.

  366. He was successful in every way

  367. until he grew proud.

  368. He grew proud of all these accomplishments

  369. as we often do.

  370. He grew so proud that he thought,

  371. apparently I can do anything,

  372. so I'm going to walk

  373. into the holy place of the temple.

  374. I'm going to burn my own incense unto God.

  375. I'm going to worship him how I want

  376. because I'm this amazing king.

  377. And he went in and did what only the priests

  378. were allowed to do.

  379. And so the priests,

  380. 60 of them said,

  381. no, you cannot do this.

  382. You must not do this.

  383. They rebuked him.

  384. They withstood him.

  385. And he got angry.

  386. But in his anger,

  387. as soon as he was angry,

  388. in response,

  389. God struck him,

  390. his forehead, it says,

  391. with leprosy,

  392. which meant that

  393. for the rest of his life,

  394. he could, one,

  395. no longer even live in his own palace,

  396. and two,

  397. he never stepped foot

  398. into the temple ever again.

  399. And he lived alone

  400. and he died alone.

  401. That's what happened.

  402. That's the context around this

  403. in the year that King Uzziah died.

  404. So if you are a part of the nation of Israel,

  405. you are nervous.

  406. This was the greatest king

  407. that you've seen in a long time.

  408. 52 years of prosperity.

  409. Now he's struck with leprosy.

  410. Now he's dead.

  411. Also at this time,

  412. the Assyrians had started

  413. their major conquest

  414. and they were coming closer

  415. and closer to Israel every year.

  416. And according to Jewish tradition,

  417. not only was this a time

  418. of political, national instability

  419. for Israel,

  420. Isaiah personally would have felt this

  421. because according to the Jewish tradition,

  422. Isaiah's dad and Uzziah's dad

  423. were brothers.

  424. So they were cousins.

  425. Isaiah was part of this royal family

  426. and this was happening to his cousin.

  427. All right?

  428. Lots of hard stuff is going on here

  429. as we come into Isaiah chapter six, verse one.

  430. And yet it's precisely in this moment

  431. of instability

  432. that God reveals himself to Isaiah.

  433. In the year that King Uzziah died,

  434. I saw the Lord seated on a throne.

  435. Right.

  436. And I love how Jackie Hill Perry puts this.

  437. In this moment when Israel's questioning

  438. their well-being,

  439. Jackie Hill Perry,

  440. if you haven't read her book,

  441. Holier Than Thou,

  442. I highly recommend it.

  443. But she says,

  444. Uzziah is dead,

  445. but the King of God's people is alive,

  446. sitting on his throne.

  447. Maybe that seems obvious,

  448. but don't miss this.

  449. A big part of the holiness of God

  450. is that God has never not been alive.

  451. God is self-existent.

  452. He exists because he exists.

  453. He needs no one but himself to be.

  454. Therefore, he always has

  455. and will always be.

  456. He was before was,

  457. was, she says.

  458. So in the year that King Uzziah died,

  459. this great King of Israel,

  460. God reveals himself

  461. as an alternative King,

  462. as a better King,

  463. a King that will never die.

  464. And that's who he sees

  465. in this vision,

  466. high and lifted up,

  467. seated on a throne.

  468. Now another thing

  469. that's interesting though,

  470. right,

  471. is Uzziah,

  472. what was he punished for?

  473. He was punished for trying to be

  474. both a king and a priest.

  475. That never happened before

  476. in all of the nation of Israel's history.

  477. Right?

  478. And yet somehow,

  479. in this temple vision,

  480. you have this king sitting on the throne,

  481. and it's okay for him

  482. to be on the throne.

  483. You have a king and a priest there,

  484. it's the Lord.

  485. There's something utterly unique

  486. about this king,

  487. and we'll talk about that more later.

  488. Look with me now at verse two.

  489. What else is going on here?

  490. Above him were seraphim,

  491. each with six wings.

  492. With two wings,

  493. they covered their faces.

  494. With two,

  495. they covered their feet.

  496. And with two,

  497. they were flying.

  498. So,

  499. in case you're wondering

  500. what seraphim are,

  501. they're probably like

  502. these angelic figures.

  503. This is the only place

  504. in all of scripture

  505. that talks about these figures.

  506. There's these seraphim,

  507. literally the burning ones.

  508. All right?

  509. So,

  510. they're these burning creatures,

  511. angels,

  512. unfallen creatures,

  513. with six wings.

  514. Two to fly,

  515. two to cover their faces,

  516. and two to cover their feet.

  517. They're covered from head to toe.

  518. Why?

  519. Because even though

  520. the very thing

  521. that they're created for,

  522. the only thing scripture

  523. ever tells us about them

  524. is that they're here

  525. to worship God,

  526. they can hardly do that.

  527. They can hardly be

  528. in the presence of God,

  529. even though they're created

  530. to be in the presence of God,

  531. even though they're

  532. unfallen creatures.

  533. And if anyone of us

  534. saw one of these creatures

  535. like flying to this place,

  536. it'd probably freak us out.

  537. All right?

  538. And they're just kind of

  539. so strange, right?

  540. What is this image?

  541. I don't know.

  542. It's hard to imagine, right?

  543. But I think the point

  544. is to accent

  545. the strangeness,

  546. the otherness

  547. of God.

  548. Our holy,

  549. holy,

  550. holy God.

  551. Even the unfallen creatures,

  552. these angels,

  553. cannot bear his presence

  554. without covering themselves

  555. with their wings.

  556. Now look with me

  557. at verse three.

  558. What are they doing?

  559. Well, they're worshiping.

  560. They're worshiping.

  561. And they were calling

  562. to one another.

  563. I love that.

  564. They're worshiping

  565. by preaching

  566. to one another

  567. the truths about God.

  568. You know,

  569. when I was

  570. a young worship leader

  571. in high school

  572. and I used to pick the songs

  573. for my youth group

  574. or for my church,

  575. I had this understanding

  576. of worship

  577. that is all praise unto God.

  578. And so I would only

  579. pick songs

  580. that were like

  581. in the first person.

  582. Like,

  583. I want to know you.

  584. I love you, Lord.

  585. Right?

  586. My Jesus,

  587. I love thee.

  588. Right?

  589. And I tried not to pick songs

  590. that were like

  591. more in the third person

  592. about God.

  593. Like,

  594. holy,

  595. holy,

  596. holy

  597. is the Lord God almighty.

  598. Because I wanted to direct

  599. all my worship

  600. toward God.

  601. But you know,

  602. I was missing something.

  603. I didn't realize

  604. that the point of worship

  605. is not just to

  606. approach God

  607. to lift our praises up

  608. to Him,

  609. but it's to encourage

  610. one another.

  611. It's to stir one another.

  612. It's to provoke one another

  613. unto praise.

  614. And it's a beautiful thing

  615. when we do that.

  616. Like,

  617. Christchurch,

  618. what if we came

  619. into this place

  620. every Sunday

  621. ready to worship,

  622. not lifting up

  623. our praises

  624. only to God,

  625. but what if we saw

  626. our ministry

  627. as singing

  628. to one another

  629. and provoking

  630. the praise

  631. of the holy,

  632. holy,

  633. holy God?

  634. You know,

  635. we do this thing now

  636. where we have a playlist

  637. every Sunday

  638. if you'd like to listen ahead

  639. to the songs

  640. that are gonna be played

  641. for the following Sunday.

  642. We try to highlight

  643. one of the songs

  644. that might be lesser known

  645. or that we're trying

  646. to introduce.

  647. And so my family

  648. plays that quite often

  649. at least on our way

  650. to church on Sunday.

  651. And one of the things

  652. that stirs my heart

  653. the most

  654. is when I'm standing

  655. next to my daughter,

  656. Cammie,

  657. and she's singing

  658. every word.

  659. Your goodness

  660. is running after,

  661. it's running after me.

  662. I will sing

  663. of the goodness

  664. of God,

  665. right?

  666. Praise God

  667. from whom

  668. all blessings flow.

  669. It's a beautiful thing

  670. to hear the praises

  671. of God's people,

  672. to sing them

  673. to one another.

  674. And that's what

  675. the seraphim

  676. are doing

  677. in this moment.

  678. They are calling

  679. to one another,

  680. it says in verse 3.

  681. Holy,

  682. holy,

  683. holy

  684. is the Lord

  685. almighty.

  686. The whole earth

  687. is full of his glory.

  688. They are pointing

  689. away from themselves,

  690. pointing to the throne

  691. and saying,

  692. holy,

  693. holy,

  694. holy,

  695. there is nothing

  696. like this God.

  697. And notice the song

  698. they sing,

  699. holy,

  700. holy,

  701. holy.

  702. We sing it all

  703. the time here,

  704. but it's so significant.

  705. Throughout the scriptures,

  706. whenever you see

  707. repetition,

  708. it means emphasis.

  709. Jesus.

  710. So,

  711. for example,

  712. we might see

  713. amen,

  714. amen,

  715. truly,

  716. truly,

  717. right?

  718. David cries,

  719. Absalom,

  720. Absalom,

  721. when he's sad

  722. about his son.

  723. Jesus cries,

  724. Jerusalem,

  725. Jerusalem,

  726. right?

  727. But never in all

  728. of scripture

  729. do you see

  730. a triple repetition.

  731. Never.

  732. Holy,

  733. holy,

  734. holy.

  735. He's even distinct

  736. in his distinctness.

  737. He's holy

  738. to the uttermost.

  739. Holy,

  740. holy,

  741. holy is the Lord

  742. almighty.

  743. They cry out.

  744. And what does that

  745. even mean?

  746. What does holy mean?

  747. Well,

  748. to be holy

  749. is to be set apart,

  750. right?

  751. It's to be distinct.

  752. It's to be in a class

  753. of his own.

  754. That's what God is.

  755. God is in a class

  756. of his own.

  757. This is the godness

  758. of God

  759. that they're getting

  760. at here

  761. when they're crying

  762. holy,

  763. holy,

  764. holy.

  765. Right?

  766. Notice,

  767. they don't cry

  768. love,

  769. love,

  770. love,

  771. or goodness,

  772. goodness,

  773. goodness,

  774. or,

  775. I don't know,

  776. mighty,

  777. mighty,

  778. mighty,

  779. no.

  780. Say holy,

  781. holy,

  782. holy.

  783. Why is that?

  784. Why is this first?

  785. Why is this essential

  786. to the godness

  787. of God?

  788. Well,

  789. it's because

  790. God could not be

  791. loving

  792. if he were not holy.

  793. if God were not holy

  794. in and of himself,

  795. never tempted

  796. to do anything

  797. out of selfishness

  798. or sinfulness

  799. or malice,

  800. he could not love us.

  801. He is holy,

  802. holy,

  803. holy,

  804. so that he can be

  805. holy in his love,

  806. holy in his goodness,

  807. holy in his might,

  808. holy in his grace,

  809. holy in his mercy.

  810. There is no,

  811. it's not like there's

  812. this like love

  813. that he participates in,

  814. no,

  815. he is love himself

  816. because he's holy love.

  817. There's no like goodness

  818. that he just participates in,

  819. no,

  820. he defines goodness

  821. because he's holy

  822. in his goodness.

  823. His holy,

  824. holy holiness

  825. is his transcendence,

  826. he's the source,

  827. he's the fountain.

  828. Everything else

  829. is derived

  830. from him.

  831. Everything else,

  832. and there's nothing

  833. like that in all creation,

  834. right?

  835. Right,

  836. your kids might say

  837. something like,

  838. you know,

  839. hey,

  840. daddy,

  841. mommy,

  842. who created

  843. like the world?

  844. And you would say,

  845. well,

  846. Genesis 1,

  847. God,

  848. all right?

  849. You think you're

  850. a pretty good theologian,

  851. right?

  852. And then number two,

  853. they might say,

  854. well,

  855. who made me?

  856. Well,

  857. you say,

  858. well,

  859. God,

  860. he knitted you

  861. in his womb,

  862. right?

  863. What do you do

  864. when they ask you,

  865. well,

  866. who made God?

  867. Right?

  868. Who made God?

  869. God.

  870. When God is crying,

  871. when they're crying out

  872. that God is holy,

  873. holy,

  874. holy,

  875. when they're getting

  876. at his supreme holiness,

  877. they're getting at the fact

  878. that there is nothing

  879. in all creation

  880. like this God.

  881. Again,

  882. he's in a class

  883. of his own.

  884. Holy,

  885. holy,

  886. holy is the Lord Almighty,

  887. is the Lord of hosts,

  888. of all the armies

  889. of heaven.

  890. The whole earth

  891. is full of his glory.

  892. It can't contain his glory.

  893. The whole earth

  894. is filled

  895. with the weight

  896. of his majesty.

  897. That's what they're singing

  898. to one another.

  899. And they're singing it

  900. so loud,

  901. right?

  902. Verse four says,

  903. at the sound of their voices,

  904. the doorposts

  905. and thresholds

  906. shook

  907. and the temple

  908. was filled

  909. with smoke.

  910. Their praises

  911. are rocking the place.

  912. You know,

  913. it's like,

  914. maybe a little

  915. tiny picture of that

  916. is Easter here

  917. where Jonathan's like,

  918. make some noise,

  919. right?

  920. And we get the cowbells

  921. and people are like

  922. stomping their feet,

  923. clapping their feet,

  924. and their hands.

  925. This is like that

  926. on steroids,

  927. all right?

  928. People are just,

  929. God's creatures

  930. who are made

  931. to worship him

  932. are just offering up

  933. this crazy noise,

  934. shaking the whole place.

  935. It reminds me of,

  936. you know,

  937. actually around

  938. Thanksgiving time

  939. when I used to live

  940. in Philadelphia

  941. during seminary,

  942. I would go to this church.

  943. It was called

  944. North Shore Baptist Church.

  945. And every,

  946. I think it was the Wednesday

  947. before Thanksgiving,

  948. it was a tiny

  949. little church

  950. with a low ceiling

  951. and they would do

  952. testimonies

  953. every Wednesday

  954. before Thanksgiving

  955. and people would give

  956. like crazy testimonies.

  957. There was this drug lord,

  958. like he was a

  959. multi-million dollar

  960. drug lord

  961. and he told a story

  962. of how he came to Christ,

  963. how he was like

  964. in international prison

  965. and stuff.

  966. It was wild,

  967. all right?

  968. They always had stories.

  969. And hearing those stories

  970. and responding

  971. to those stories,

  972. it was like testimony

  973. and worship

  974. and they worshipped.

  975. man,

  976. with those low ceilings,

  977. I know this is beautiful,

  978. I love this,

  979. but man,

  980. those low ceilings,

  981. they rocked that place

  982. with worship.

  983. It shook.

  984. That's what I think about

  985. when I think about

  986. this kind of praise

  987. that God deserves

  988. from his people,

  989. a praise that shakes

  990. this place,

  991. that has an impact.

  992. Do you know

  993. that people have come

  994. into Christ's church

  995. just having heard

  996. the music

  997. from the street?

  998. They've come in

  999. through our doors.

1000. It is a missional thing

  1001. to sing forth

  1002. God's praises

  1003. with all your might,

  1004. no matter how bad

  1005. you sing.

  1006. In fact,

  1007. that's a greater testimony

1008. to the grace of God,

1009. to the glory of God.

  1010. So they're shaking

  1011. this place,

  1012. but not only

  1013. is the place shaking,

  1014. but here we go,

  1015. it's filled with smoke.

  1016. What does that mean?

  1017. There's fire,

  1018. something dangerous,

  1019. right?

  1020. Something hot,

  1021. something burning,

  1022. something being consumed.

  1023. What's going on here?

  1024. There's smoke,

  1025. and he sees it.

  1026. Verse five,

  1027. what does he say?

  1028. Woe to me,

  1029. Isaiah cried.

  1030. Woe to me.

  1031. Now, a question I have

  1032. for us is,

  1033. why does he say,

  1034. why is it woe

  1035. and not worship?

  1036. Why doesn't he join

  1037. the seraphim in worship?

  1038. Why doesn't he say,

  1039. holy, holy, holy,

  1040. yeah, me too,

  1041. I affirm that,

  1042. amen, holy, holy, holy?

  1043. Because God's holiness

  1044. is not just about

  1045. his transcendence,

1046. it's about his moral purity.

  1047. And when we come

1048. into the presence of God,

  1049. we're not just struck

  1050. by his otherness

  1051. as the I am,

1052. the holy, holy, holy God,

  1053. we are struck

  1054. by his absolute purity

  1055. and his righteousness.

  1056. And like a mirror

  1057. before us,

  1058. we see ourselves

1059. and we don't measure up.

  1060. We see ourselves,

1061. we not only see God

1062. for who he really is,

  1063. but we see ourselves

1064. for who we really are.

  1065. Right?

  1066. People of unclean lips.

  1067. He says,

  1068. I am ruined.

  1069. You can say,

  1070. I am doomed.

  1071. I am undone.

  1072. I am lost.

  1073. For I am a man

  1074. of unclean lips,

  1075. he says.

  1076. It's interesting

  1077. that he says,

  1078. I'm a man of unclean lips,

  1079. isn't it?

  1080. Because what's his job?

  1081. He's a prophet.

  1082. The very instrument

  1083. that God gave him

1084. to most usefully serve him,

  1085. his own righteousness,

  1086. he's repenting of.

1087. Because before this holy God,

1088. the thing that he is best at,

1089. he realizes is not enough.

  1090. It's unclean.

  1091. It's wrong.

1092. I feel that all the time

  1093. as a pastor.

1094. How often I get up here

1095. and I want to preach to you

1096. because I do want to honor God,

1097. but I kind of want

  1098. to honor myself.

1099. I kind of want to glorify myself

  1100. sometimes with the words

  1101. that I say.

  1102. Ask any worship leader.

1103. They want to worship God,

1104. but they kind of like

1105. letting people hear their voice.

1106. Same with Isaiah the prophet.

  1107. We have unclean lips.

1108. Out of the overflow of the heart,

1109. out of the mouth comes

1110. the overflow of the heart, right?

1111. Out of the abundance of the heart.

  1112. I'm a man of unclean lips,

  1113. he says.

  1114. And not only that,

  1115. but I live among a people

  1116. of unclean lips.

  1117. I'm surrounded by this.

  1118. I can't escape it.

1119. This is who we are.

1120. And with these unclean lips,

1121. my eyes have seen something

1122. that I'm not sure I can handle.

1123. My eyes have seen the King,

  1124. the Lord Almighty.

  1125. And he says,

  1126. woe is me.

1127. Do we come into worship

  1128. every Sunday

  1129. with woe?

1130. Do we have a holy reverence

  1131. to our worship?

1132. Is this truly a sacred place?

1133. Do we behold who God is

1134. and do we behold who we are?

1135. See, Isaiah 6 is actually

1136. where we get our liturgy.

1137. If you look at your liturgies,

  1138. this is the format.

  1139. We come before God,

  1140. we sing his praise,

  1141. right?

1142. We acknowledge who he is,

  1143. this glorious God.

  1144. And we also acknowledge

  1145. our unclean lips,

  1146. our uncleanness,

  1147. our sin before him.

  1148. We confess our sins,

  1149. right?

  1150. Every week,

  1151. we confess our sins

  1152. to God

  1153. and to one another.

  1154. It's coming right out

  1155. of Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

1156. And what do we do next, though?

1157. What do we do about that?

  1158. What do we do

  1159. when we realize that,

  1160. yeah,

  1161. we are unclean?

  1162. I think a lot of us

  1163. want to say,

  1164. well,

1165. I just want to put aside

  1166. the holiness of God.

  1167. That's one of my

1168. less favorite things about him,

1169. one of my least favorite

  1170. doctrines,

  1171. right?

  1172. But God says no.

  1173. And Isaiah says no.

  1174. Let's lean into this,

1175. let's lean into the truth.

  1176. Woe is me.

  1177. Woe is me

1178. because I truly am unclean.

1179. When we come into worship,

  1180. we face the truth

  1181. about God

  1182. and about ourselves.

  1183. And that can be

  1184. a hard truth

  1185. to face up to.

  1186. Super hard.

  1187. But get this,

  1188. the good news

  1189. of the gospel

  1190. is that that's not

1191. the end of Isaiah's vision,

  1192. right?

  1193. Verse 6.

1194. Then one of the seraphim

  1195. flew to me

  1196. with a live coal

  1197. in his hand,

  1198. which he had taken

  1199. with tongs

  1200. from the altar.

  1201. With it,

  1202. he touched my mouth

  1203. and said,

  1204. see,

  1205. this has touched

  1206. your lips.

  1207. your guilt

  1208. is taken away

  1209. and your sin

  1210. atoned for.

  1211. It's crazy right now

  1212. that Isaiah's here,

  1213. all right?

  1214. In this temple.

1215. So there are a couple

1216. details I want to point out

1217. to you in this vision,

  1218. all right?

  1219. So he's in,

  1220. he sees the Lord

  1221. seated on his throne,

  1222. okay?

  1223. And if you're familiar

  1224. with that language,

  1225. the throne,

  1226. what is the throne

1227. that was in the temple?

  1228. What is considered

  1229. as the throne

  1230. of the temple?

  1231. It was the Ark

  1232. of the Covenant.

  1233. Sometimes known

  1234. as the footstool

  1235. of the Lord,

  1236. but also known

  1237. as the throne.

  1238. That's where God

  1239. would sit,

1240. in the holy of holy

  1241. place in the temple,

  1242. the place that

  1243. the high priest

  1244. could only enter

  1245. once a year,

  1246. but somehow

  1247. the Lord

  1248. is sitting there

  1249. and Isaiah

  1250. is present there,

  1251. all right?

  1252. And notice

  1253. the smoke

  1254. that's in there,

  1255. right?

  1256. Because once a year,

  1257. they would burn

  1258. a sacrifice

  1259. on that altar

  1260. at the Ark

  1261. of the Covenant.

  1262. So this is

  1263. a special time,

  1264. this is Yom Kippur,

  1265. this is the day

  1266. of atonement,

  1267. right?

  1268. And it's like,

  1269. first of all,

1270. why is a king there

1271. and why is Isaiah there?

1272. How can that even happen,

  1273. all right?

1274. Why is a king there?

  1275. Why is Isaiah there?

1276. Why is a prophet there?

  1277. Where's the priest?

  1278. Well,

  1279. that's what's spoken to

  1280. here in verse 6

  1281. and 7.

  1282. When the seraphim

  1283. is flying toward him

1284. with a coal in his hand

  1285. and taking it

  1286. and touching his mouth

  1287. with it

  1288. and getting rid

  1289. of his guilt,

  1290. what he's doing

  1291. is he's

  1292. atoning for

  1293. his sin

  1294. from the sacrifice

  1295. that's on the altar.

  1296. There's a sacrifice

  1297. as well

  1298. in this scene.

  1299. It's not just

1300. the Lord on a throne.

  1301. It's not just

  1302. Isaiah

  1303. seeing all this.

  1304. There's a sacrifice

  1305. being burnt.

  1306. And when

  1307. Isaiah's lips

  1308. are put in touch

  1309. with that sacrifice,

  1310. those burning coals,

  1311. his guilt's taken away.

  1312. His sin

  1313. is covered.

  1314. And I think,

  1315. you know,

  1316. we might be tempted

1317. to think this is just

  1318. a cheap, easy grace.

  1319. This is just something

  1320. he does,

  1321. some kind of ritual

  1322. from these coals.

  1323. Boom,

  1324. he's clean.

1325. But if we have eyes

  1326. to see what's really

  1327. going on here,

  1328. this is a foreshadowing

  1329. of the gospel.

  1330. This is a picture

  1331. of Christ.

  1332. You know,

  1333. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  1334. In John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  1335. the evangelist John,

  1336. he says that

  1337. Isaiah saw

  1338. Jesus' glory.

  1339. glory.

  1340. It's in John chapter 12,

    John 12:41

  1341. verse 41.

  1342. Isaiah saw

  1343. Jesus' glory.

  1344. And I think

  1345. what he meant

  1346. by that was

  1347. he's seeing

  1348. this,

  1349. not only this king

  1350. who's seated

  1351. on his throne

  1352. high and lifted up,

  1353. but he's also seeing

  1354. this sacrifice

  1355. that's made for him,

  1356. that's making him

  1357. able to be

  1358. in the presence

  1359. of God.

  1360. this purifying

  1361. work of God,

  1362. this initiative

  1363. of God

1364. to come near to him.

  1365. He didn't even ask

  1366. for forgiveness.

  1367. He didn't even ask

  1368. to be clean.

  1369. All he's thinking

  1370. is woe is me,

  1371. I'm dead.

  1372. But God comes

  1373. near to him,

  1374. puts him

  1375. into union

  1376. with his sacrifice

  1377. and his sins

  1378. are atoned for.

  1379. And listen,

  1380. this changes everything.

  1381. This changes

  1382. everything

  1383. about how Isaiah

  1384. will live

  1385. from then on.

  1386. verse 8,

1387. this is the last verse.

  1388. It says,

  1389. sin's been atoned for.

  1390. Then I heard

1391. the voice of the Lord

  1392. saying,

  1393. whom shall I send

  1394. and who will go

  1395. for us?

  1396. And this guy,

  1397. Isaiah,

  1398. who goes from fearful

  1399. and woe is me

  1400. and I cannot

  1401. behold the Lord,

  1402. all of a sudden,

  1403. because of this mercy

  1404. that has come

  1405. near to him,

  1406. he says,

  1407. here I am.

  1408. Or in the Hebrew,

  1409. behold me,

  1410. he says.

  1411. All of a sudden

  1412. he says,

  1413. behold me.

  1414. Is he crazy?

  1415. This is the holy,

  1416. holy God.

  1417. And he was saying,

1418. woe is me at first

  1419. and now he's saying,

  1420. behold me?

  1421. How can he say

  1422. something like that?

1423. How could any of us

  1424. say that

  1425. to the holy,

  1426. holy,

  1427. holy God?

  1428. God.

  1429. It's because his sins

  1430. were atoned for.

1431. It's because of the sacrifice

1432. that was made for him.

1433. And if we look forward

1434. to what this was pointing to,

  1435. it points to Jesus,

  1436. all right?

  1437. The Lamb of God.

  1438. The Lamb who was

  1439. foreshadowed in that sacrifice

  1440. at this altar.

1441. The only one who is

  1442. not only a prophet,

  1443. but also a king

  1444. and a priest.

  1445. Who can go into

  1446. the temple for us.

  1447. Not just sitting

  1448. on the throne,

  1449. but who is

  1450. our very sacrifice.

1451. What kind of a king

  1452. is that?

  1453. It's a priestly king.

  1454. The Lamb of God

  1455. slain for us.

  1456. And this transforms

  1457. everything about Isaiah.

  1458. He sees God.

  1459. He sees himself.

  1460. He sees God's mercy.

1461. And he sees his calling.

  1462. And he says,

  1463. here am I.

  1464. Behold me.

1465. I'm unafraid of you now,

  1466. God.

1467. Not because you are not

  1468. a fearful holy God,

  1469. but because you have

  1470. made me confident

  1471. to come near

1472. to your throne of grace.

  1473. And here am I.

  1474. Send me.

  1475. Use me, Lord.

  1476. However you want.

  1477. In Christ's church,

1478. I hope that this church,

  1479. this place,

1480. will be such a place

  1481. of worship

1482. that we also see God,

1483. that we also see ourselves,

1484. that we see his mercy,

1485. and that we go forth.

  1486. That's what the benediction

  1487. is every week.

1488. Go in the name of Jesus,

1489. in the name of Jesus,

1490. in your union with Jesus,

  1491. because of his sacrifice,

1492. to love and serve this world

1493. in response to his sacrifice.

  1494. And I pray that that's

1495. the kind of sacred church

  1496. we'll be.

  1497. That's the kind of

  1498. worshiping church we'll be.

1499. So will you pray with me?

  1500. Amen.

  1501. Lord God,

  1502. help us to see.

1503. Give us this kind of

  1504. holy vision.

1505. And make us this kind of

  1506. holy,

  1507. worshiping church.

  1508. would you do it

1509. unto the glory of Jesus,

  1510. with him lifted up

  1511. before our eyes,

  1512. the author and perfecter

  1513. of our faith,

  1514. the Lamb of God

  1515. who was slain

1516. for the sins of the world,

1517. who's come near to us.

1518. Thank you for this mercy.

1519. Give us eyes to see

1520. the heights of your holiness

1521. and the depths of your grace

1522. all at the same time

1523. and make us a people of worship

  1524. because of it.

  1525. In Jesus' name.

  1526. Amen.

  1527. Amen.
