  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel According to Mark, chapter 8, verses 34 and 35,

    Mark 8:34

  6. and chapter 9, verses 14 to 29, as printed in the liturgy.

  7. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said,

  8. Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

  9. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it.

  10. But whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

  11. When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them

  12. and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

  13. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

  14. What are you arguing with them about, he asked.

  15. A man in the crowd answered,

  16. Teacher, I brought you my son who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.

  17. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.

  18. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid.

  19. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.

  20. You unbelieving generation, Jesus replied,

  21. How long shall I stay with you?

  22. How long shall I put up with you?

  23. Bring the boy to me.

  24. So they brought him.

  25. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion.

  26. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

  27. Jesus asked the boy's father,

  28. How long has he been like this?

  29. From childhood, he answered.

  30. It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him.

  31. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.

  32. If you can, Jesus said,

  33. Everything is possible for one who believes.

  34. Immediately, the boy's father exclaimed,

  35. I do believe.

  36. Help me overcome my unbelief.

  37. When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,

  38. he rebuked the impure spirit.

  39. You deaf and mute spirit, he said,

  40. I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.

  41. The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently, and came out.

  42. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said,

  43. He's dead.

  44. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up to his feet,

  45. and he stood up.

  46. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,

  47. Why couldn't we drive it out?

  48. He replied,

  49. This kind can come out only by prayer.

  50. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  51. Thanks be to God.

  52. Good morning, Christ Church.

  53. It's good to see you all on this holiday weekend.

  54. And it's great to see the sun come back out today for us.

  55. And we're here in the gospel of Mark.

  56. We've been preaching this since Christmas,

  57. and we'll preach it all the way to Easter.

  58. And if you're paying any attention to the literary structure of this little book,

  59. it's written as a three-act play.

  60. And we've been primarily in act one with Jesus in Galilee,

  61. and he's demonstrating his power and his authority.

  62. That's basically the first eight chapters of Mark's gospel.

  63. On Wednesday night, Ash Wednesday,

  64. we took a turn to act two of this play.

  65. And it's basically Jesus on the way to Jerusalem,

  66. and he takes his disciples on this journey

  67. where he's teaching them now about his cross

  68. and about what his cross means for their discipleship.

  69. And he's re-educating them about the nature of the kingdom of God.

  70. And that's basically from Mark 8 to 10.

  71. And then act three of this book is Jesus in Jerusalem,

  72. the final events, this final week leading up to his cross,

  73. and that's Mark chapter 11 to the very end.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  74. And so we, the other night, Ash Wednesday,

  75. we began looking at act two,

  76. where Jesus is talking about the meaning of his mission

  77. and therefore the manner of our discipleship.

  78. And he asks his disciples, he says,

  79. who do you say that I am?

  80. And Peter answers, on behalf of the 12,

  81. and he says, you're the Messiah.

  82. And Jesus says, correct.

  83. And the kind of Messiah I am is that I'm going to be killed,

  84. and I'm going to lay my life down

  85. in humble service and suffering for the sake of others.

  86. And then Jesus says these words we just heard.

  87. He says, whoever wants to be my disciple

  88. must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.

  89. If you lose your life for me and for the gospel, you'll save it.

  90. And what a great theme that is for us during Lent.

  91. If you want to be my apprentice,

  92. Jesus says there's a cost to that.

  93. He says you've got to deny yourself,

  94. which is not so much about giving up chocolate or alcohol for Lent,

  95. as it is about, it's not so much about denying something to yourself,

  96. it's just denying yourself,

  97. your self-interested, self-centered ego.

  98. Jesus is saying, I want you to surrender to me

  99. your entire identity structure and your destiny.

  100. I want you to surrender that to me.

  101. Deny yourself.

  102. Take up your cross.

  103. That is, be ready and willing to be executed with me or to die for me.

  104. And he says, I want you to lose your life for me and for the gospel,

  105. which means I want you to give yourself to my mission.

  106. I want you to become an ambassador of my good news of the kingdom of God in this world.

  107. So that's where we are now in Act 2 of Mark's gospel.

  108. And if you want to turn to your pew Bible on page 820,

  109. that's where we are today.

  110. And you can kind of see some of this larger context.

  111. You can see that this is just after the transfiguration

  112. where the glory of Jesus as the divine son of God

  113. has been revealed to the disciples Peter, James, and John.

  114. And while Jesus is up on the top of that mountain with his three disciples,

  115. you've got nine other disciples down at the bottom of the mountain.

  116. And they're struggling with, in this valley, they're struggling with evil.

  117. And Jesus shows up to find them in an argument.

  118. And he says, well, what are you arguing about?

  119. And this father steps forward and he says, I'm responsible for this commotion.

  120. My poor boy has been attacked with convulsions since he was a child.

  121. And I thought that you and your disciples would be able to help and to heal him.

  122. But your people basically could do nothing.

  123. And they tried, but they failed.

  124. And Jesus then proceeds to exercise the demon out of this boy

  125. and to heal him and restore him in a moment.

  126. And the disciples later on, they asked, Jesus, why couldn't we drive this demon out?

  127. We've had success with these things before, but today we failed.

  128. Why do we fail?

  129. And why, Jesus, were you able with extreme ease and with just a word to speak?

  130. And evil is vanquished and the boy was healed.

  131. Why are we, your people, your disciples, your apprentices, not yet able?

  132. Why do we not yet have the power to do what you do?

  133. And so that's the question today.

  134. Why don't we have the power to do what you do?

  135. Now, I preached the body of this sermon before,

  136. but it was a time when many of you weren't part of this church.

  137. So I'm putting it back on some of your radar.

  138. And for some of you, you're hearing this for the first time.

  139. And I'm going to make some fresh application.

  140. But my thesis today and my golden thread is just Jesus' simple statement at the very end

  141. where he says, this kind can come out only by prayer.

  142. This kind can come out only by prayer.

  143. So let's think about this kind.

  144. In this boy, we have a picture of the modern world,

  145. which is seized and convulsed by evil.

  146. An evil which is distorting and destroying the image of God in human beings.

  147. And in these disciples, we see the church of Jesus Christ, which is trying.

  148. It's doing its uttermost, but it's lacking in power.

  149. And it's obviously failing to deal with the situation.

  150. Do any of us ask the question of these disciples?

  151. Do we say, Lord, why?

  152. Why don't we have the power?

  153. Why don't we have the power to deal with the evil that's so obviously convulsing our world?

  154. Why does the church in North America and the Western world seem to lack such spiritual energy

  155. and authority to engage with the situation that's confronting us?

  156. And Jesus answers the question about why they couldn't drive out the evil spirit.

  157. And his answer is, this kind.

  158. You don't yet understand this kind.

  159. You've not yet learned to differentiate between that kind and this kind.

  160. The disciples know how to deal with that kind of spirit.

  161. Because after their initial training, we saw this in Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  162. Jesus sends his disciples out and he says,

  163. I want you to go preach the kingdom of God and I want you to cast out demons.

  164. And they went out and they did that very thing.

  165. And in Luke chapter 10, we read that on one occasion,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  166. they were so successful that they came back with such elation and such excitement

  167. that they felt overconfident.

  168. And the Lord rebuked the pride of his little disciple community.

  169. And he says to them in Luke 10, 20, he says,

  170. Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you,

  171. but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

  172. He says, you guys are full of excitement because in my name and in my power,

  173. the devils are made subject to you.

  174. And because this kingdom of darkness, this kingdom full of evil spirits

  175. is just falling down before you as you preach the kingdom of God.

  176. But Jesus says, this time, this father brings his son to you for healing

  177. and you're approaching that problem with overconfidence.

  178. You're approaching this problem with a sense of self-assurance.

  179. You have no doubt that you're going to succeed against the darkness.

  180. And yet, in spite of all of your efforts, this boy, he's no better at all.

  181. In fact, he's just as desperate, just as miserable as he's ever been.

  182. And so Jesus says, I want to give you, my disciples,

  183. I want to give you eyes to see the difference between that kind

  184. that you've encountered before with success and this kind,

  185. which is way stronger than you ever realized.

  186. You guys tracking with me so far?

  187. If you've ever read the Screwtape Letters,

  188. if you've never read the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis,

  189. if you're in middle school or high school or college

  190. and you've never read the Screwtape Letters,

  191. I encourage you to get this book and read it between now and Easter.

  192. What an amazing book that is.

  193. But it draws on this New Testament teaching

  194. about the difference between this demon and that demon.

  195. Right?

  196. That in this evil kingdom of dark powers that Jesus describes,

  197. there's gradations and there's hierarchies.

  198. And the Apostle Paul writes about this in Ephesians 6.

  199. He says,

  200. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood.

  201. He says,

  202. What do we wrestle against?

  203. What we really wrestle against,

  204. he says,

  205. are principalities and powers

  206. and the rulers of the darkness of this world

  207. and spiritual wickedness in high places.

  208. There's a gradation.

  209. There's a hierarchy.

  210. And at the head of all of that is Satan himself,

  211. whom the Apostle describes in Ephesians 2.

  212. He says,

  213. He's the prince of the power of the air

  214. and the spirit that is now at work

  215. in the sons of disobedience.

  216. And so under Satan,

  217. there are these spirits,

  218. these forces,

  219. these powers that vary in strength.

  220. And earlier,

  221. the disciples could easily deal with the lesser spirits.

  222. Right?

  223. They could master them.

  224. They could exercise them in Jesus' name.

  225. But Jesus says,

  226. Here is a spirit of greater power.

  227. This kind is not like the other feebler spirits.

  228. It's altogether different.

  229. You're facing a much bigger problem.

  230. And the disciples rush to attempt a treatment

  231. before they've truly understood

  232. the nature of the problem before them.

  233. And I think the church in the Western world today

  234. is so active,

  235. so busy,

  236. it's so devoting,

  237. massive amounts of time and energy

  238. and money

  239. without really stopping to consider

  240. Jesus' diagnosis of this kind.

  241. Right?

  242. We may not be as aware as we should be

  243. of the real essence

  244. and the real depth

  245. of the problem that's confronting the church.

  246. And what do I mean by that?

  247. Well, in 1882,

  248. philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche

  249. said that we should,

  250. our modern project,

  251. our project in the late modern world

  252. is that we should unchain

  253. the earth from the sun.

  254. We should unchain the earth from the sun

  255. and therefore,

  256. on that basis,

  257. we should revalue all values.

  258. Okay?

  259. I can't explain what that means

  260. this morning.

  261. But think about that.

  262. What happens if you unchain

  263. the earth from the sun?

  264. And what happens

  265. when you revalue all values?

  266. Well, since Nietzsche's time,

  267. we've seen belief in God

  268. rapidly fading in the western world.

  269. We've seen the knowledge

  270. of biblical truth diminished

  271. and almost virtually gone.

  272. Probably in the next generation,

  273. it will be completely gone.

  274. We've lost a sense of universal,

  275. timeless, moral absolutes

  276. of what's right and what's wrong.

  277. The notion that human beings

  278. are a species that need saving

  279. is increasingly dismissed and mocked.

  280. Jesus is interpreted

  281. as just a man among men,

  282. a social reformer,

  283. a political agitator,

  284. a good moral example

  285. or ethical teacher,

  286. but he's nothing more than that.

  287. The Bible is interpreted

  288. as just a book among books.

  289. It's got inspiring stories,

  290. beautiful poems,

  291. wise sayings,

  292. but it's mostly just

  293. superstitious myth and legend.

  294. Nothing more than that.

  295. And the result of all this

  296. is that most of our friends

  297. and our neighbors

  298. and our colleagues

  299. and our family

  300. are in positions of plenty

  301. in our culture of affluence.

  302. They have everything they need.

  303. They're able,

  304. at the click of a button,

  305. to get whatever they want,

  306. but they're totally unconcerned

  307. about spiritual things.

  308. No interest in the soul,

  309. no interest in higher

  310. and eternal things in life,

  311. no interest in God

  312. just eating and drinking

  313. and enjoying the pleasure

  314. of the moment,

  315. completely powerless

  316. in the face of evil.

  317. Right?

  318. Totally unprepared

  319. to meet God face to face,

  320. to stand before

  321. the judge of all the earth

  322. with his exacting standards

  323. of absolute righteousness.

  324. righteousness.

  325. This is what happens

  326. when you unchain the earth

  327. from the sun

  328. and you revalue all values.

  329. We're facing this unprecedented

  330. post-Christian context

  331. and this increasingly

  332. anti-Christ zeitgeist.

  333. That's the spirit of the age

  334. that we live in,

  335. the zeitgeist of our spirit,

  336. the spirit of this age,

  337. is resisting Christ.

  338. And so can we carry on

  339. thinking that the problem

  340. is that kind

  341. when really Jesus would say,

  342. no, it's this kind.

  343. Like the disciples,

  344. are we trying to deal

  345. with this kind of situation

  346. that we find ourselves in

  347. without prayer,

  348. without extraordinary prayer,

  349. how arrogant,

  350. how clueless

  351. the disciple community

  352. seems to be

  353. about our inadequacy

  354. to deal with evil

  355. and suffering in the world.

  356. We seem not to understand

  357. how weak we are,

  358. how proud we are.

  359. We overestimate our abilities

  360. and our faith.

  361. We underestimate the power of evil

  362. that's out there in the world

  363. and indeed the power of evil

  364. that's in here in ourselves.

  365. And Jesus is wanting us,

  366. I think,

  367. to confront

  368. and to contend with

  369. this kind.

  370. This kind.

  371. Do you understand

  372. that you're dealing

  373. with this kind?

  374. Does that make sense?

  375. But Jesus says,

  376. this kind can come out.

  377. This kind can come out.

  378. When you look at the actors

  379. in this scene,

  380. you notice that,

  381. number one,

  382. there's the devil

  383. who the New Testament

  384. calls a roaring lion

  385. seeking whom he may devour,

  386. who comes to steal

  387. and kill and destroy

  388. and the disciples

  389. seem to give him

  390. no trouble at all.

  391. The boy,

  392. here he is

  393. in this terrible condition

  394. of helplessness

  395. and evil

  396. is making him

  397. increasingly subhuman.

  398. The scribes

  399. just argue and debate.

  400. The clergy

  401. is completely useless

  402. when real evil

  403. needs to be confronted.

  404. The crowd is just

  405. in absolute distress.

  406. Who else in this crowd

  407. needs to be healed

  408. and delivered

  409. like this boy?

  410. And this father

  411. is so distraught.

  412. He's just a man

  413. who his basic prayer

  414. is just rescue me

  415. from my unbelief.

  416. And then you have

  417. these disciples

  418. who are confident

  419. that they can help,

  420. confident that they can

  421. do something

  422. in this situation

  423. and then they're mortified

  424. and they're baffled

  425. by their failure.

  426. It's a scene

  427. of total despair.

  428. And isn't that

  429. our situation exactly

  430. in Berkeley in 2024?

  431. That Satan is rampant,

  432. the world is convulsing

  433. with evil

  434. and if you're not

  435. convinced of that

  436. you just need to read

  437. the headlines more often.

  438. The church is impotent

  439. with her squabbling scribes.

  440. The crowd is agonizing

  441. with her massive levels

  442. of need

  443. just watching this spectacle.

  444. The people of God

  445. are faltering

  446. in their faith,

  447. just their faith

  448. is polluted

  449. and choked by unbelief.

  450. And the disciples

  451. are perplexed

  452. about what to do

  453. in the face

  454. of overwhelming evil.

  455. Doesn't that feel

  456. just desperate?

  457. Well, Lent is a season

  458. in which we humble ourselves

  459. before our desperate situation.

  460. It's a season

  461. in which we say,

  462. Lord, help us.

  463. Lord, deliver us.

  464. And what's amazing

  465. is that you've got

  466. more than just

  467. these six actors

  468. that I've named.

  469. You have the seventh actor

  470. that enters the scene

  471. and he says,

  472. this kind can come out.

  473. And he demonstrates

  474. the power to drive it out.

  475. And then in this

  476. follow-up Q&A,

  477. Jesus says,

  478. you know,

  479. this kind can not

  480. be driven out

  481. by anything but.

  482. And he's basically saying,

  483. look, certain approaches

  484. to being a disciple community

  485. are utterly useless

  486. when applied to this kind.

  487. The power that

  488. maybe you've had before,

  489. the things that

  490. were sufficient before

  491. are insufficient now.

  492. The things that were

  493. adequate before

  494. are inadequate now.

  495. The things that were

  496. effective before

  497. are ineffective now.

  498. And it's leaving you

  499. helpless and hopeless

  500. and it's leaving this boy

  501. diseased and powerless.

  502. And Jesus,

  503. in this conversation

  504. with his disciples

  505. is driving them

  506. to a sense of

  507. deeper dependency.

  508. When these disciples

  509. realize

  510. that in spite of their efforts,

  511. they're not enough,

  512. that they're actually

  513. quite useless,

  514. that they lack power

  515. that's needed

  516. to confront the powers

  517. and the principalities,

  518. what do they do?

  519. And what does the church

  520. do today

  521. when she realizes

  522. that we're not touching

  523. the secular age at all?

  524. That the spiritual,

  525. moral condition

  526. of our society

  527. seems not affected

  528. by us one bit.

  529. In fact,

  530. in many ways,

  531. we're being drawn

  532. into the spiritual

  533. and moral condition

  534. of our society.

  535. And in many ways,

  536. in many pockets,

  537. the church is making

  538. the spiritual and moral

  539. condition of our society

  540. worse.

  541. Do you realize that?

  542. Jesus says,

  543. if you realize that,

  544. I want you to put your faith

  545. in my power

  546. to deal with the situation.

  547. I want you to put your faith

  548. in my power

  549. to deal with this kind.

  550. And so he says

  551. in verse 19,

  552. you unbelieving generation,

  553. how long shall I stay with you?

  554. How long shall I put up

  555. with you?

  556. Bring the boy to me.

  557. He just looks out

  558. and he sees everybody's

  559. full of unbelief,

  560. no faith.

  561. Jesus is the only one

  562. that believes.

  563. He says,

  564. bring the boy to me

  565. and they brought the boy

  566. to him

  567. and when the spirit

  568. saw Jesus,

  569. it immediately threw the boy

  570. into a convulsion

  571. and he fell down

  572. to the ground

  573. and he rolled around

  574. foaming at the mouth

  575. and we've seen this

  576. over and over

  577. in Mark's gospel

  578. that the spirits

  579. know Jesus.

  580. The spirits know Jesus

  581. better than human beings

  582. know Jesus

  583. and so when they see him,

  584. they tremble.

  585. They understand his power

  586. and when Jesus

  587. gets closer to them,

  588. they resist

  589. and they tighten their grip

  590. on human beings

  591. and Jesus,

  592. in verse 21,

  593. it says,

  594. he asks the boy's father,

  595. how long has he been

  596. like this?

  597. And he says,

  598. from childhood,

  599. he's often thrown him

  600. into the fire

  601. or water to kill him

  602. but if you can do anything,

  603. if you can do anything,

  604. take pity on us

  605. and help us.

  606. You can kind of imagine

  607. this father just shrugging

  608. his shoulders

  609. and saying,

  610. hey, Jesus,

  611. go for it.

  612. If you got anything,

  613. just do it.

  614. And Jesus teasingly

  615. rebukes him

  616. in verse 23

  617. and just bounces

  618. this question back

  619. to him and says,

  620. what is this

  621. if you can nonsense?

  622. It's not about

  623. my ability

  624. or inability.

  625. It's totally

  626. about you

  627. and your setting limits

  628. upon God

  629. and what for him

  630. is possible

  631. or impossible.

  632. And so this man

  633. hears that

  634. and immediately

  635. in verse 24,

  636. it says,

  637. the boy's father

  638. exclaimed,

  639. I do believe,

  640. help me overcome

  641. my unbelief.

  642. What an awesome prayer

  643. for the season of Lent.

  644. What an amazing thing

  645. for the church

  646. to just honestly pray.

  647. I do believe

  648. but oh Lord,

  649. help me overcome

  650. my unbelief.

  651. Lord,

  652. rescue me

  653. from my doubts.

  654. Liberate me

  655. from half believing

  656. to full believing.

  657. Save me

  658. from notional faith

  659. into real faith.

  660. It's a prayer

  661. in which we say

  662. to Jesus,

  663. awaken me,

  664. enliven me,

  665. quicken me,

  666. revive me.

  667. Give me

  668. just the smallest

  669. amount of,

  670. just a mustard seed

  671. size of faith

  672. to grab hold

  673. of your massive

  674. amount of power.

  675. Lord,

  676. please enable me

  677. to believe in you.

  678. And in verse 25,

  679. it says,

  680. when Jesus saw

  681. that a crowd

  682. was running to the scene,

  683. he rebuked

  684. the evil spirit.

  685. He said,

  686. you deaf and mute spirit,

  687. I command you

  688. come out of him

  689. and never enter him again.

  690. And the spirit shrieked,

  691. convulsed him violently

  692. and came out

  693. and the boy looked

  694. so much like a corpse

  695. that they said,

  696. he's dead.

  697. What have you done,

  698. Jesus?

  699. He's dead.

  700. But Jesus took him

  701. by the hand

  702. and lifted him

  703. to his feet

  704. and he stood up.

  705. Jesus is the giver of life.

  706. Jesus is the one

  707. who breaks the power

  708. of Satan.

  709. Jesus is the one

  710. who releases us

  711. through his

  712. authoritative word.

  713. Jesus is the one

  714. who's on his way

  715. to his own death

  716. and his own resurrection

  717. and so he just

  718. grabs a hold

  719. of this boy

  720. and he pulls him

  721. out of this death-dealing evil

  722. and he raises him up

  723. to new life with him.

  724. And this is a wonderful instance

  725. of what Jesus said

  726. he came to do.

  727. In Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3:27

  728. verse 27,

  729. he says,

  730. I came to bind up

  731. the strong man

  732. and to plunder his house.

  733. I came to bind up

  734. the strong man

  735. and to deliver

  736. all the prisoners,

  737. all the people

  738. that he's put

  739. into his house.

  740. Have you experienced this?

  741. Has Jesus taken you

  742. by the hand

  743. to raise you up

  744. from darkness

  745. and evil

  746. and sin

  747. and death

  748. and to give you

  749. a new kind of life

  750. with him?

  751. Has Jesus unleashed

  752. the power

  753. of the Holy Spirit

  754. in you

  755. so that you've been

  756. delivered and liberated

  757. from the kingdom

  758. of darkness

  759. into the kingdom

  760. of light?

  761. You can't

  762. become a Christian.

  763. You can't enter

  764. into the kingdom

  765. of God

  766. in any other way.

  767. So if you're here

  768. and you're exploring

  769. Christianity with us,

  770. we're so thrilled

  771. that you are.

  772. but if you've not yet

  773. experienced

  774. the power

  775. of Jesus

  776. but there's a part

  777. of you that wants to

  778. and maybe there's a part

  779. of you that just wants

  780. to want to,

  781. I want to encourage you

  782. to just take a risk today

  783. and even right now

  784. in your heart

  785. and maybe later today

  786. you can just pray,

  787. Lord, I believe

  788. but rescue me

  789. from my unbelief.

  790. And if you're a Christian

  791. you've said that.

  792. You're a disciple.

  793. You're a follower of Jesus.

  794. You've apprenticed yourself

  795. to the master.

  796. This season of Lent

  797. is a time to examine

  798. ourselves

  799. and to ask ourselves

  800. where is my faith

  801. in Jesus?

  802. What unbelief

  803. is lingering

  804. in the shadows

  805. of my heart

  806. and my mind

  807. that I need Jesus

  808. to overcome for me?

  809. And in what parts

  810. of my life

  811. am I saying,

  812. Jesus,

  813. if you can,

  814. help me?

  815. When I'm looking

  816. at the challenges

  817. that I'm facing

  818. or that we're facing,

  819. where have I succumbed

  820. to unbelief

  821. and thought to myself,

  822. I'm pretty sure

  823. that this particular need

  824. is beyond your ability.

  825. And I'm pretty sure

  826. that this particular challenge

  827. that I'm facing

  828. is outside of the realm

  829. of what's possible

  830. for you to accomplish.

  831. What are the areas

  832. of my life

  833. where Jesus

  834. is looking at me

  835. and going,

  836. you unbelieving

  837. and faithless soul,

  838. how long,

  839. how long do I have

  840. to be patient with you?

  841. Oh.

  842. One of the verses

  843. in Mark's gospel

  844. just haunts me.

  845. It's where it says

  846. in Mark 6,

    Mark 6:5

  847. verse 5,

  848. he, Jesus,

  849. could not do any miracles

  850. there in Nazareth

  851. and he was amazed

  852. at their lack of faith.

  853. And that's the question

  854. for us is

  855. how much do we believe

  856. that Jesus has the power

  857. to do the things

  858. that we need him to do?

  859. How much do we believe

  860. that Jesus has the power

  861. to make this kind

  862. come out?

  863. He says this kind

  864. can come out

  865. but in conclusion

  866. he says this kind

  867. can come out

  868. only by prayer.

  869. This kind can come out

  870. only by prayer.

  871. You succeeded before

  872. because you were dealing

  873. just with that kind

  874. of lesser,

  875. weaker demons

  876. and you've failed here

  877. because now

  878. you're in a different situation

  879. with this kind

  880. and you have

  881. insufficient power.

  882. Your ignorance

  883. about the hierarchies

  884. of powers

  885. and principalities

  886. in this world

  887. has led you

  888. to a lack

  889. of preparation

  890. and therefore

  891. insufficient prayer

  892. and therefore

  893. powerlessness.

  894. And Jesus says

  895. what I did,

  896. he says to his disciples

  897. I did what you could not do

  898. because I have the power

  899. and because I'm filled

  900. with the power

  901. that God gives me

  902. by the Holy Spirit.

  903. What Jesus has just been doing

  904. on the Mount

  905. of Transfiguration

  906. is he's been there

  907. in a time

  908. with his disciples

  909. Peter, James, and John

  910. in a particularly

  911. intense time

  912. of prayer.

  913. Praying to the Father

  914. fill me

  915. with the Holy Spirit.

  916. Fill me with the power

  917. of the Holy Spirit

  918. and he comes back

  919. from that time

  920. of prayer

  921. with a heightened

  922. sense of power.

  923. And friends

  924. we're never going

  925. to be able

  926. to deal

  927. with this kind

  928. that's facing

  929. the church today

  930. unless we've applied

  931. to God

  932. for the power

  933. which he

  934. and he alone

  935. can give us.

  936. A power that's beyond

  937. any of our ability.

  938. I assume

  939. that these disciples

  940. had actually been

  941. praying

  942. but they were praying

  943. unbelieving prayers.

  944. And Jesus

  945. I think

  946. is calling us

  947. to a kind

  948. of extraordinary

  949. believing prayer

  950. where we say

  951. God

  952. I'm so aware

  953. now of my need

  954. I'm so aware

  955. that we are in

  956. over our heads

  957. and that we're

  958. confronting something

  959. too deep

  960. for us

  961. to deal with

  962. on our own

  963. and I'm aware

  964. of myself

  965. that I half believe

  966. and that I'm riddled

  967. with doubt

  968. and that I barely

  969. pray

  970. but help me

  971. with my unbelief

  972. enable me

  973. to depend

  974. upon you

  975. fill me

  976. fill us

  977. fill this church

  978. with your power.

  979. Jesus is calling us

  980. to act out

  981. our faith

  982. through this kind

  983. of prayer

  984. and if you hear

  985. that as

  986. an individualistic

  987. just sort of

  988. do it yourself

  989. kind of project

  990. you're hearing it wrong

  991. because Jesus

  992. is talking

  993. to his circle

  994. of disciples

  995. and he's saying

  996. y'all need something

  997. you guys

  998. need something

  999. that can go down

  1000. underneath

  1001. this evil power

1002. and that can shatter it

1003. and there's only one thing

  1004. that can do that

  1005. and that's the extraordinary

  1006. supernatural power

  1007. of my father.

  1008. And the first place

  1009. that my father's power

1010. is going to show up

  1011. in your disciple community

1012. is through your prayer meetings.

  1013. The prayer meeting

  1014. is the spiritual thermostat

  1015. of the church.

  1016. The prayer meeting

  1017. is where

  1018. the spiritual heat

  1019. and the spiritual energy

  1020. gets cranked up

  1021. among us.

  1022. Right?

  1023. The prayer meeting

  1024. is where people

  1025. come in with hearts

  1026. that are cold

  1027. and hard

  1028. and closed

  1029. and they walk out

  1030. with hearts

  1031. that are warm

  1032. and soft

  1033. and open.

  1034. At Christ Church

  1035. we're hoping that

  1036. prayer is happening

  1037. in our homes

  1038. and our community groups

  1039. but we have this

  1040. weekly meeting

  1041. for prayer

  1042. at 9.30

  1043. on Sunday morning

  1044. in our boiler room

  1045. just back there

  1046. and down beneath

  1047. the sanctuary

  1048. and that's a place

  1049. where we just pray

  1050. Lord would you

  1051. cause whatever

  1052. is going on

  1053. with this kind

  1054. in our church

  1055. and in our city

  1056. to move aside

  1057. so that you can

  1058. create space

  1059. for your kingdom

  1060. to come in.

  1061. Once a month

  1062. we gather

  1063. on second Wednesdays

  1064. at 7 o'clock

  1065. for prayer

  1066. to pray

  1067. for the particular

  1068. needs of individuals

  1069. and the corporate

  1070. needs of our church

  1071. and of the world

  1072. that we live in.

  1073. Once a quarter

  1074. we come together

  1075. for prayer vigils

  1076. our next one

  1077. happens to be

  1078. on Good Friday

  1079. and here's my

  1080. crazy hope

  1081. during Lent.

  1082. You want to hear

  1083. my crazy hope

  1084. during Lent?

  1085. Is that our prayer

  1086. meetings would be full

  1087. and I know that's hard

  1088. for parents especially.

  1089. That may be actually

  1090. a miracle

1091. if you could make it

  1092. to a prayer meeting

  1093. but I'm praying

  1094. that our prayer meetings

  1095. would become full

1096. and that we just have

  1097. no space left

  1098. for people

  1099. to pray.

  1100. There'd just be

  1101. too many people

  1102. that want to come

  1103. and pray

  1104. and I think

  1105. that would happen

  1106. if we're utterly

  1107. convinced of our need

  1108. and if we were

  1109. to cease

  1110. having so much

  1111. confidence in ourselves

  1112. and if we know

  1113. that we can't succeed

  1114. in the mission

  1115. that we've been given

  1116. without the presence

  1117. and the power

  1118. of the Holy Spirit

  1119. and if we collectively

  1120. decided that yes

  1121. we want to see

  1122. this power

  1123. that can enter

  1124. into the souls

  1125. of people

  1126. and break the grip

  1127. of evil

  1128. and liberate people

  1129. and make people

  1130. new

  1131. if we wanted

  1132. to experience

  1133. the power

  1134. of the living God

  1135. we just simply

1136. have to pray for it.

  1137. It's not going

  1138. to come automatically

  1139. you have to ask

1140. God to give it to you

1141. and you have to ask

  1142. him again

  1143. and again

  1144. and again

  1145. and there's only

  1146. one thing

  1147. that stands

  1148. in the way

  1149. of this kind

  1150. of praying faith

  1151. this faith

  1152. that prays

  1153. and Jesus calls

  1154. it yourself.

  1155. If anyone

  1156. whoever wants

  1157. to be my disciple

  1158. must deny yourself

  1159. and take up

  1160. your cross

  1161. and follow

  1162. me.

  1163. The church

  1164. is never going

  1165. to deal

  1166. with the problems

  1167. that's facing us

  1168. unless we give up

  1169. more than chocolate

  1170. and alcohol

  1171. for Lent

  1172. and definitely

  1173. give that up

  1174. but what we should

  1175. really give up

  1176. is our prayerlessness.

  1177. What we should

  1178. really give up

  1179. is the thing

  1180. that our prayerlessness

  1181. is rooted in

  1182. which is self-confidence

  1183. and self-reliance

  1184. and self-satisfaction.

  1185. If anyone

  1186. asks you

  1187. what are you

  1188. giving up for Lent

  1189. I hope you'll say

  1190. myself.

  1191. I'm just going

  1192. to stop trusting

  1193. so much in myself

  1194. and I'm going

  1195. to start

  1196. taking up

  1197. this cross

  1198. of prayer

  1199. and just

  1200. deliberately saying

  1201. Lord I believe

  1202. but help my unbelief.

  1203. That's how I'm

  1204. that's what I'm doing

  1205. in Lent.

  1206. That's how I'm

  1207. preparing for Easter.

  1208. We really have

  1209. no hope to deal

  1210. with this kind

  1211. unless God

  1212. manifests his power

  1213. among us.

  1214. But when he does

  1215. it's like this boy

  1216. Jesus just

  1217. overcomes the evil

  1218. in him

  1219. with apparent ease.

  1220. He just deals

  1221. with this problem

  1222. in an effortless manner.

  1223. The devil's exercised

  1224. the boy is healed

  1225. the father's relieved

  1226. the family's restored

  1227. the community

  1228. rejoices.

  1229. That's what happens

  1230. when the power comes

  1231. from on high.

  1232. And friends

  1233. Christ

  1234. Jesus is risen

  1235. from the dead.

  1236. He's our risen

  1237. and living Lord

  1238. who's just waiting

  1239. for us to come

  1240. and pray to him

  1241. and ask him

  1242. for his power

  1243. and so may we

  1244. come to terms

  1245. with our

  1246. powerlessness

1247. in the face of evil

  1248. and may we come

  1249. to know the power

  1250. of God in Jesus

  1251. by the Holy Spirit

  1252. and may we seek

  1253. more and more

  1254. in this season

  1255. to be full

  1256. of the Holy Spirit

1257. and full of his power

  1258. through prayer.

  1259. And as we pray

  1260. let us pray

  1261. with the confidence

  1262. that everything

  1263. is possible

  1264. for those who believe.

  1265. And let us pray

  1266. with deep believing

  1267. that nothing

  1268. is impossible

  1269. for God.

  1270. And let us pray

  1271. knowing that

  1272. the eternal

  1273. infinite

  1274. unlimited power

  1275. of God

  1276. it's right there

  1277. for the asking.

  1278. if only we would

  1279. radically rely

  1280. on his ability

  1281. and not on

  1282. the self.

  1283. This kind

  1284. can come out

  1285. but it can only

  1286. come out

  1287. by prayer.

1288. In the name of the

  1289. Father, Son,

  1290. and Holy Spirit.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.
