  5. Today's Gospel reading is from the Gospel according to Mark, chapters 9 and 10.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  6. They came to Capernaum.

  7. When he was in the house, he asked them,

  8. What were you arguing about on the road?

  9. But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

  10. Sitting down, Jesus called the twelve and said,

  11. Anyone who wants to be the first must be the very last and servant of all.

  12. They were on their way up to Jerusalem with Jesus leading the way,

  13. and the disciples were astonished while those who followed were afraid.

  14. Again, he took the twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.

  15. We are going up to Jerusalem, he said,

  16. and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.

  17. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

  18. who will mock him and spit on him, flog him, and kill him.

  19. Three days later, he will rise.

  20. Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him.

  21. Teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.

  22. What do you want me to do for you, he asked.

  23. They replied,

  24. Let one of us sit at your right hand and the other at your left in glory.

  25. You don't know what you're asking, Jesus said.

  26. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?

  27. We can, they answered.

  28. Jesus said to them,

  29. You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.

  30. But to sit at my right or my left is not for me to grant.

  31. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.

  32. When the ten heard about this, they became very indignant with James and John.

  33. Jesus called them together and said,

  34. You know that those who were regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lorded over them,

  35. and their high officials exercise authority over them.

  36. Not so with you.

  37. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.

  38. And whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.

  39. For even the son of man did not come to be served,

  40. come to be served, but to serve,

  41. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  42. Then they came to Jericho.

  43. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd,

  44. were leaving the city,

  45. a blind man, Bartimaeus, which means son of Timaeus,

  46. was sitting by the roadside begging.

  47. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,

  48. he began to shout,

  49. Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

  50. Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet,

  51. but he shouted all the more,

  52. Son of David, have mercy on me.

  53. Jesus stopped and said,

  54. Call him.

  55. So they called the blind man,

  56. Cheer up, on your feet, he's calling you.

  57. Throwing his cloak aside,

  58. he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

  59. What do you want me to do for you?

  60. Jesus asked him.

  61. The blind man said,

  62. Rabbi, I want to see.

  63. Go, said Jesus,

  64. your faith has healed you.

  65. Immediately he received his sight

  66. and followed Jesus along the road.

  67. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  68. Good morning, Christ Church.

  69. As we are drawing closer to Easter,

  70. we only have a few weeks left in the gospel of Mark.

  71. And what we're going to talk about today

  72. is of,

  73. it's a vital subject

  74. of great importance

  75. with far-reaching implications

  76. in every sphere of our lives,

  77. our homes,

  78. our churches,

  79. our workplaces,

  80. our society as a whole.

  81. And if as individual people

  82. and as a collective community,

  83. we can embrace the essence of this text

  84. and by the power of the Holy Spirit

  85. and the grace of God

  86. begin to live it out together,

  87. many, many people would come to see

  88. the light and the life

  89. and the love of Jesus Christ

  90. in us

  91. to such a degree

  92. that they'd be compelled

  93. to consider

  94. why our lives are so radically different

  95. than everyone else's.

  96. Why we are a counterculture,

  97. an alternative society,

  98. a city within the city,

  99. defying the prevailing social norms

  100. and values of our time.

  101. I want to remind you

  102. before we get into the text

  103. of the larger context

  104. in the Gospel of Mark,

  105. if you're paying attention

  106. to the literary structure,

  107. Mark has written this Gospel

  108. as a three-act play.

  109. And we looked at Act 1

  110. where Jesus is in Galilee

  111. and He's demonstrating

  112. His authority and His power

  113. in the first eight chapters

  114. of this Gospel.

  115. And then you come to Act 2,

  116. which is Jesus on the way

  117. to Jerusalem,

  118. and He's taking His disciples

  119. on this journey

  120. in order to teach them

  121. about His cross

  122. and to re-educate them

  123. about the kingdom of God

  124. in light of the cross.

  125. And then in Act 3,

  126. we come to Jerusalem,

  127. the final days leading up

  128. to Jesus' cross,

  129. and that's the last chapters,

  130. chapters 11 through 16.

  131. But here we are

  132. in this middle portion,

  133. Act 2 of this Gospel,

  134. chapters 8, 9, and 10,

  135. where Jesus gives us

  136. these three prophecies

  137. of His passion,

  138. these three predictions

  139. of His coming cross.

  140. And Jesus solemnly repeats

  141. these prophecies

  142. about His cross three times

  143. so that His disciples

  144. can know that what's going

  145. to happen to Him

  146. is not going to take Him

  147. by surprise.

  148. And in fact,

  149. this third prediction

  150. is the most elaborate

  151. and most detailed.

  152. It says in verse 33,

  153. it says,

  154. we're going to Jerusalem.

  155. The Son of Man

  156. is going to be delivered

  157. over to the chief priests

  158. and the teachers of the law,

  159. that is,

  160. the Jewish authorities.

  161. And they will condemn Him

  162. to death

  163. and they'll hand Him

  164. over to the Gentile authorities

  165. who will mock Him,

  166. spit on Him,

  167. flog Him,

  168. and kill Him.

  169. And in three days later,

  170. He will rise.

  171. Now, you would think

  172. with such a prophecy

  173. that the disciples

  174. would be in a state

  175. of reflection

  176. and a prayer.

  177. And yet,

  178. this prophecy

  179. is followed

  180. by this request,

  181. this incredible request

  182. by James and John

  183. for positions

  184. of privilege

  185. and power.

  186. And then we have

  187. Jesus' brilliant response,

  188. which is capped off

  189. by verse 45,

  190. which is really

  191. the key verse

  192. in our entire gospel.

  193. And so that's where

  194. I'd like to focus

  195. our attention

  196. as we begin

  197. there in verse 45.

  198. And my whole message

  199. today is this,

  200. that Jesus came

  201. to serve

  202. and to create

  203. a counterculture

  204. of servants.

  205. That Jesus came

  206. to serve

  207. and create

  208. a counterculture

  209. of servants.

  210. And I want to talk

  211. first about

  212. how Jesus came

  213. to serve.

  214. He says that

  215. in verse 45.

  216. He says,

  217. For even the Son of Man

  218. did not come

  219. to be served,

  220. but to serve.

  221. And the choice

  222. of that word

  223. that the Son of Man

  224. has come

  225. is a strong giveaway

  226. that Jesus existed

  227. before He was born.

  228. That He's come

  229. into the world.

  230. And why has He come

  231. into the world?

  232. Well, a major part

  233. of our identity formation

  234. is to get clear

  235. on who we are not.

  236. And to be able to say

  237. who we are not.

  238. And I'm not this,

  239. so I'm not going

  240. to do this,

  241. that, or the other.

  242. And Jesus knows

  243. who He's not.

  244. Jesus has not

  245. come to be served.

  246. And that assumes

  247. that He has every right

  248. to expect to be honored

  249. and served,

  250. but He's not come

  251. to seek that.

  252. To be served

  253. is the default mode

  254. of the human heart.

  255. There's a part of us

  256. and every single one

  257. of us that says,

  258. I'm here to be served.

  259. Serve me.

  260. Give to me.

  261. My will be done.

  262. I'll be the superior.

  263. You be my inferior.

  264. I'll be the center.

  265. You be the circumference.

  266. The reason Jesus came

  267. is because the only way

  268. this world could be put

  269. right again

  270. is for there to be

  271. a new human being

  272. with a new kind of heart

  273. that's operating

  274. in a new kind of way.

  275. And this is why

  276. the New Testament

  277. calls Jesus

  278. the new Adam.

  279. And tells us

  280. why it's so important

  281. to get out of

  282. the old Adam

  283. and to live your life

  284. here under the new Adam.

  285. Because Jesus,

  286. the new Adam,

  287. He's not infected.

  288. by this disease

  289. that says,

  290. serve me.

  291. My rights.

  292. My privileges.

  293. My power.

  294. My status.

  295. I want to be the greatest.

  296. I want to be the first.

  297. What's so incredibly

  298. attractive about Jesus

  299. is that He's radically

  300. free of these things.

  301. Jesus comes and He says,

  302. even though I have a right

  303. to be served

  304. and to be honored

  305. and to enjoy

  306. all the privileges

  307. of the Son of God,

  308. I've not come

  309. to exercise

  310. my rights

  311. and my privileges.

  312. In fact,

  313. what I've come to do

  314. is surrender them.

  315. I've come to lay them down

  316. in a cause

  317. greater than myself

  318. and my rights.

  319. So Jesus knows

  320. who He's not.

  321. I've not come

  322. to be served,

  323. but Jesus also knows

  324. who He is.

  325. He's very,

  326. He's quite clear

  327. on His identity

  328. and His mission.

  329. And He says,

  330. in verse 45,

  331. He says,

  332. the Son of Man

  333. did not come

  334. to be served,

  335. but to serve

  336. and to give His life

  337. as a ransom for many.

  338. He has no doubt

  339. about what He's come to do.

  340. He says,

  341. I've come to serve,

  342. to be a diakoneo,

  343. which is where we get

  344. the word deacon

  345. or the diaconate.

  346. It just means a servant.

  347. It literally means

  348. a table waiter.

  349. And a table waiter

  350. is someone who comes

  351. to meet your needs

  352. and clean up your mess.

  353. And Jesus says,

  354. that's what I've come

  355. to do.

  356. I've come to serve.

  357. All of His acts of mercy,

  358. all of His acts of healing,

  359. His acts of teaching

  360. are to be seen

  361. in light of this one

  362. great purpose.

  363. I've come to serve.

  364. And what is Jesus'

  365. greatest act of service?

  366. He defines it.

  367. He says,

  368. I've come to give my life

  369. as a ransom for many.

  370. Jesus' death

  371. is not incidental

  372. to His identity

  373. and His mission,

  374. but it's quite central.

  375. The death of Jesus

  376. is not an accident.

  377. It's not a tragic

  378. waste of life

  379. at the end

  380. of a great career.

  381. Unlike most deaths

  382. that we read about

  383. in biographies

  384. and headlines,

  385. Jesus went to His death

  386. willingly

  387. and quite deliberately.

  388. He says in John

    John 10:17

  389. chapter 10,

  390. verse 17,

  391. the reason

  392. my Father loves me

  393. is that I lay down

  394. my life

  395. only to take it up again.

  396. No one takes it from me,

  397. but I lay it down

  398. of my own accord.

  399. I have authority

  400. to lay it down

  401. and authority

  402. to take it up again.

  403. Jesus' greatest act

  404. of service

  405. is giving over

  406. His life

  407. to God the Father

  408. in His death

  409. on the cross.

  410. And why was it necessary

  411. for Him to do so?

  412. Well, Jesus tells us

  413. not only that

  414. He will die,

  415. but He tells us

  416. why He will do so.

  417. And He says,

  418. it's because we need

  419. to be ransomed.

  420. We, all of us,

  421. every single one of us

  422. need to be ransomed.

  423. Right?

  424. the plight of humanity

  425. is that we are held

  426. in captivity.

  427. And if you go back

  428. to the earliest part

  429. of the Gospel,

  430. Mark chapter 2,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  431. these friends,

  432. they bring their

  433. paralyzed friend

  434. to Jesus

  435. and they lay Him down

  436. before Jesus.

  437. And what does Jesus

  438. say to this man?

  439. He says,

  440. Son,

  441. your greatest problem

  442. is a material problem.

  443. It's a physical problem.

  444. No, He says,

  445. Son,

  446. your sins are forgiven.

  447. And then He goes on

  448. and deals with His material

  449. and physical problem.

  450. He heals His infirmity

  451. and His paralysis.

  452. But He says,

  453. Sons,

  454. your sins are forgiven.

  455. The very next chapter

  456. in Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  457. Jesus describes His mission

  458. and what does He say?

  459. He says,

  460. No one can enter

  461. the strong man's house

  462. without first tying him up.

  463. Then He can plunder

  464. the strong man's house.

  465. And when Jesus says that,

  466. He's painting for us

  467. a picture of a kidnapping.

  468. And this strong man

  469. who's kidnapped us

  470. and tied us up

  471. and put us in the basement

  472. of His house

  473. in this kind of hostage situation.

  474. And what Jesus is saying to us

  475. is that you are held captive

  476. internally by sin,

  477. which leads to death.

  478. And you're held captive externally

  479. by these dark powers of evil.

  480. And that's kind of a question

  481. for us this morning.

  482. Do we believe this diagnosis,

  483. Jesus' diagnosis

  484. of the human condition,

  485. that we are in a spiritual

  486. and a moral bondage

  487. from which we cannot

  488. extricate ourselves?

  489. We're prisoners

  490. in need of a ransom.

  491. And Jesus not only talks

  492. about the plight

  493. from which we need

  494. to be ransomed,

  495. but He also talks about

  496. the price with which

  497. we need to be ransomed.

  498. He leaves us in no doubt

  499. about the price.

  500. He says,

  501. we need such a huge

  502. sacrificial payment

  503. that would not only match

  504. the value of our personhood,

  505. but it would also procure

  506. our freedom.

  507. And Jesus says,

  508. the only price,

  509. the only payment

  510. that will work

  511. in this situation

  512. is me,

  513. myself.

  514. It's only if I give my life,

  515. only if I die,

  516. only if I shed my blood

  517. that you could possibly hope

  518. to be ransomed.

  519. And this is what sets Jesus

  520. apart really from

  521. the founders

  522. of all the other religions

  523. because each of them came,

  524. if you study them,

  525. each of them came

  526. to live.

  527. Each of them came

  528. to set an example.

  529. They came to give

  530. their teachings,

  531. but Jesus says,

  532. I came to die.

  533. I came to give

  534. not just teachings,

  535. I came to give my life.

  536. And how does Jesus say

  537. he's going to carry out

  538. this ransom?

  539. Well, he says,

  540. I'm going to do it

  541. for the many.

  542. And that word for

  543. means instead of

  544. or in place of

  545. the many.

  546. I'm going to be

  547. a substitutionary sacrifice

  548. for the many.

  549. Now, when I think about

  550. all of my favorite films

  551. about kidnapping

  552. and hostage situations

  553. and ransoming,

  554. am I the only one

  555. that likes these films?

  556. I think of Air Force One

  557. with Harrison Ford

  558. as the president

  559. of the United States

  560. and his aircraft,

  561. his plane is taken captive

  562. by terrorists.

  563. Or there's this great movie

  564. called Taken

  565. where Liam Neeson

  566. is this ex-CIA operative

  567. and his daughter

  568. has been snatched away

  569. by human traffickers.

  570. Or a more recent film,

  571. Captain Phillips,

  572. where Tom Hanks

  573. is the captain

  574. and his ship

  575. and his whole crew

  576. has been overtaken

  577. by these pirates.

  578. And, you know,

  579. in every single one

  580. of these films,

  581. how are the prisoners

  582. set free?

  583. How do those hostages

  584. end up making it home safe

  585. if they make it home safe

  586. at all?

  587. Well, in every single film,

  588. many, many people

  589. have to die.

  590. I mean,

  591. Liam Neeson's like

  592. killing a lot of people.

  593. Many people

  594. are shedding

  595. their blood.

  596. But this is what makes

  597. the drama of Jesus

  598. so very different

  599. because he says

  600. instead of the many people

  601. dying for the ransom

  602. of one,

  603. he says it's going to be

  604. the one for the many.

  605. One person

  606. will die

  607. to ransom

  608. the many.

  609. And I love,

  610. if you'll just turn with me

  611. back to verse 32.

  612. I love this verse.

  613. It says,

  614. they were on their way

  615. up to Jerusalem

  616. with Jesus leading the way

  617. and the disciples

  618. were astonished

  619. while those who followed

  620. were afraid.

  621. And where exactly

  622. is Jesus leading them?

  623. Here is almighty God himself

  624. come in the flesh.

  625. He stepped out of eternity

  626. and into time

  627. and he's striding ahead

  628. with purpose

  629. to Jerusalem.

  630. He's on a determined march

  631. to his cross

  632. to voluntarily

  633. give his life

  634. to be a ransom

  635. for those who are

  636. in captivity.

  637. One substituted

  638. in the place

  639. of the many.

  640. Out ahead

  641. leading everybody

  642. to the cross.

  643. And Jesus says here

  644. in this exchange

  645. with James and John,

  646. he asks them this question

  647. in verse 38.

  648. He says,

  649. can you drink the cup

  650. that I drink?

  651. Can you drink the cup

  652. that I drink?

  653. And in Hebrew scriptures,

  654. the cup is representative

  655. of the just judgment

  656. of God upon human evil.

  657. The cup is the wrath

  658. and the condemnation

  659. of God on sin.

  660. And when Jesus says,

  661. can you drink the cup

  662. that I'm going to drink?

  663. He's saying,

  664. I'm going to make the payment.

  665. I'm going to pay the price

  666. by drinking that cup.

  667. He says,

  668. I'll be condemned

  669. so you don't have to be.

  670. I'll take on the wrath

  671. of God,

  672. the judgment of God

  673. on human evil

  674. upon myself

  675. so that you can be free

  676. from this condemnation.

  677. He says,

  678. that's the payment.

  679. That's the ransom

  680. that you could never pay

  681. but that I'll pay

  682. on your behalf

  683. for your freedom.

  684. So friends,

  685. do you know

  686. that this is why

  687. Jesus came?

  688. He came to serve you

  689. in this way.

  690. Do you know

  691. that He served you

  692. in this way?

  693. Without faith

  694. in His ransom

  695. for you,

  696. you're still enslaved.

  697. You're still a prisoner.

  698. Without putting your trust

  699. in Jesus

  700. who gave His life

  701. for you,

  702. you're still in bondage

  703. and in captivity

  704. to sin

  705. and death

  706. and to evil.

  707. And so I want to ask you today,

  708. what in the world

  709. is keeping you

  710. from giving yourself

  711. to this one

  712. who came to give Himself

  713. for you

  714. and came to serve you.

  715. Jesus came

  716. to serve.

  717. But it's not just

  718. that He came to serve.

  719. Jesus came to serve

  720. and to create

  721. a counterculture

  722. of servants.

  723. This is the end game

  724. of His service.

  725. Jesus came to create

  726. a counterculture

  727. of servants.

  728. What Jesus accomplished

  729. on His cross

  730. was utterly unique.

  731. Only His life

  732. as the Son of God

  733. could be

  734. the ransom

  735. for us.

  736. And so this prophecy

  737. is very much

  738. about Himself,

  739. but it's also

  740. a prophecy

  741. that becomes

  742. a pattern

  743. for us.

  744. It's the mold

  745. into which

  746. our lives

  747. are to be formed.

  748. And perhaps you notice

  749. in this text

  750. and perhaps

  751. when you look around

  752. at the church

  753. in North America,

  754. have you ever noticed

  755. that the life

  756. of Jesus' disciples

  757. doesn't always reflect

  758. the life

  759. of Jesus Himself?

  760. Has anyone

  761. noticed this?

  762. Do you know anything

  763. about the church today?

  764. That the life

  765. of Jesus' disciples

  766. does not always reflect

  767. the life

  768. of Jesus Himself.

  769. And when you look

  770. at verse 35,

  771. it says,

  772. Then James and John,

  773. the sons of Zebedee,

  774. came to Him

  775. and they said,

  776. Teacher,

  777. we want you to do

  778. whatever we ask.

  779. Very often we address

  780. Jesus as our teacher,

  781. but we've not yet

  782. assimilated into our lives

  783. the major focus

  784. of His teaching.

  785. And this story

  786. makes abundantly clear

  787. that the sons of Zebedee

  788. and the Son of Man

  789. are in this

  790. irreconcilable contradiction

  791. with one another.

  792. The sons of Zebedee

  793. are seeking after

  794. power and glory

  795. and thrones.

  796. Right?

  797. And the Son of Man

  798. is seeking after

  799. humility and service

  800. and the cross.

  801. And we too

  802. are faced with this choice

  803. between these two

  804. radically different

  805. alternative value systems

  806. and lifestyles.

  807. And we've got to decide

  808. what kind of people

  809. we're going to be.

  810. And to what degree

  811. are we willing

  812. to adjust our lives

  813. to the pattern

  814. and the practices

  815. of Jesus.

  816. And we've got to make

  817. three key choices.

  818. And the first choice

  819. is we've got to choose

  820. between self-seeking

  821. and self-sacrifice.

  822. If we're going to be

  823. disciples of Jesus

  824. we've got to choose

  825. between self-seeking

  826. and self-sacrifice.

  827. They say to Jesus

  828. we want you to do for us

  829. whatever we ask.

  830. Now what kind of prayer

  831. is that?

  832. We want you to do

  833. whatever we ask.

  834. That is a terrible prayer.

  835. It is actually

  836. the exact opposite

  837. of true prayer.

  838. True prayer says

  839. Lord your name

  840. be hallowed.

  841. Your kingdom come.

  842. Your will be done.

  843. Not my will

  844. but your will be done.

  845. But James and John

  846. are somehow determined

  847. to bend God's will

  848. to their own will.

  849. We want you to do for us

  850. whatever it is

  851. that we ask.

  852. But Jesus

  853. being full of grace

  854. he works with

  855. his self-seeking disciples

  856. and he says to them

  857. in verse 36

  858. what do you want me

  859. to do for you?

  860. And they replied

  861. let one of us

  862. sit at your right

  863. and the other

  864. at your left

  865. in your glory.

  866. They think

  867. when the kingdom

  868. of God comes

  869. our Messiah

  870. is going to

  871. rout the Romans

  872. and he's going to

  873. set up a new

  874. administration

  875. in the royal palace

  876. and at that moment

  877. like there always is

  878. in these moments

  879. in history

  880. there's going to be

  881. a scramble

  882. for the best seats.

  883. And you're probably aware

  884. that the Caesars

  885. in that time

  886. they set their

  887. victorious generals

  888. on either side

  889. of their royal throne.

  890. And so they're

  891. thinking to themselves

  892. well we need to

  893. kind of get on this.

  894. We need to compete.

  895. We need to

  896. get at the front

  897. of the line.

  898. We need to make

  899. advance reservations

  900. so that we can

  901. rule there

  902. with Jesus.

  903. And Jesus says

  904. to them in verse 38

  905. you don't know

  906. what you're asking.

  907. And that must be

  908. how he responds

  909. to so many

  910. of my prayers.

  911. Jonathan

  912. you have no clue

  913. what you're asking.

  914. Yours is the way

  915. of self-seeking

  916. but mine is the way

  917. of self-sacrifice.

  918. Jesus emptied himself

  919. of all of his heavenly glory

  920. to take on human flesh

  921. and throughout his life

  922. he humbled himself

  923. he never sought

  924. his own glory.

  925. In fact for the sake

  926. of God

  927. and for the welfare

  928. of other people

  929. he chose

  930. the self-sacrifice

  931. of his cross

  932. from the very beginning.

  933. And he's saying to us

  934. you

  935. my disciples

  936. must choose

  937. between

  938. self-seeking

  939. for your own glory

  940. and your own honor

  941. and self-sacrifice

  942. for the glory of God

  943. and the honor

  944. of other people.

  945. That's just a basic

  946. choice you've got to make.

  947. A choice between

  948. self-seeking

  949. and self-sacrifice.

  950. But the second choice

  951. that we've got to make

  952. is a choice

  953. we've got to choose

  954. between power

  955. and service.

  956. The church

  957. as a whole

  958. and Christians

  959. as individuals

  960. need to choose

  961. between power

  962. and service.

  963. They say in verse 37

  964. let one of us

  965. sit at your right

  966. and the other

  967. at your left

  968. in your glory.

  969. Basically they're saying

  970. Jesus forget Peter.

  971. Forget about Peter.

  972. We know you've made him

  973. the number one.

  974. We know that he's

  975. our lead disciple

  976. but

  977. forget about him.

  978. We want to rule

  979. on thrones

  980. next to you.

  981. We want the top places

  982. in your cabinet.

  983. We want to be

  984. your prime minister

  985. and your chief of staff.

  986. Give us these seats

  987. of authority

  988. so that we can enjoy

  989. all the connections

  990. and all the status

  991. and all the influence

  992. and all the power

  993. with you Jesus.

  994. And it says in verse 41

  995. that when the ten

  996. heard about this

  997. they became indignant

  998. with James and John.

  999. This includes Peter.

1000. They're all full of fury

  1001. because they've been

  1002. outsmarted.

  1003. They're full of fear

  1004. because they've been

  1005. beaten to the punch.

  1006. All of them

  1007. every single one

  1008. of Jesus' twelve disciples

  1009. are hungry for power

  1010. because the lust

  1011. for power

  1012. is so intoxicating.

  1013. And we see this

  1014. everywhere

  1015. in our public life

  1016. don't we?

  1017. We see it

  1018. in our professions.

  1019. We see it

  1020. in our politics.

  1021. Somehow this lust

  1022. for power

  1023. even enters

  1024. into our places

  1025. of worship.

  1026. And Jesus says

  1027. I'm calling you

  1028. my disciples

  1029. to a different way.

1030. He says in verse 42

  1031. Jesus called them together

  1032. you know that those

  1033. who are regarded

  1034. as rulers

  1035. of the Gentiles

  1036. lord it over them

  1037. and their high officials

  1038. exercise authority

  1039. over them.

1040. Now we have to say

  1041. that the exercise

  1042. of good authority

  1043. the good exercise

  1044. of authority

  1045. is something that

  1046. God intends for us

  1047. and we see that

  1048. in Genesis 1 and 2

  1049. where God puts Adam

  1050. and Eve

1051. in the Garden of Eden

  1052. and he tells them

  1053. to rule over it.

  1054. He tells them

  1055. to exercise their authority

  1056. over it by caring

  1057. for it and cultivating

  1058. and that's a good thing.

  1059. That's what human beings

  1060. are for.

1061. But we see very quickly

  1062. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1063. that Adam and Eve

  1064. begin to misuse

  1065. their authority

  1066. and begin to control

  1067. and domineer

  1068. over one another

  1069. and by Genesis 4

  1070. that authority

1071. is not just being misused

  1072. it's being abused

  1073. and the descendants

  1074. of Adam and Eve

  1075. are dehumanizing

  1076. and killing each other

  1077. they're coercing

  1078. and overpowering

  1079. each other

  1080. and this is what

  1081. Jesus has in mind.

  1082. He's thinking about

  1083. how all of this

  1084. has gotten baked

  1085. into the systems

  1086. and the structures

  1087. of power

  1088. in the Roman Empire

  1089. this empire

  1090. that's organized

  1091. hierarchically

  1092. with different levels

  1093. of power

  1094. and privilege

  1095. from Caesar

  1096. and the Senate

  1097. at the top

  1098. down to the peasants

  1099. and the slaves

  1100. at the bottom

  1101. and Jesus looks

  1102. at all that

  1103. and he says

  1104. not so with you.

  1105. In fact

  1106. Jesus will take

  1107. those slaves

  1108. at the very bottom

  1109. and he turns

  1110. that kingdom

  1111. upside down

  1112. and he says

  1113. in verse 43

  1114. not so with you

  1115. instead whoever

  1116. wants to become

  1117. great among you

  1118. must be your servant

  1119. and whoever

  1120. wants to be first

  1121. must be slave

  1122. of all.

1123. Do you want to be

  1124. great?

1125. Do you want to be

  1126. first?

  1127. Jesus says.

  1128. He says

  1129. I came not to

  1130. grab hold of power

  1131. I came to give

  1132. power away.

  1133. I came not to

  1134. wield power

  1135. over people

  1136. like Caesar

  1137. but I came to

  1138. show you the power

  1139. of relinquishing

  1140. your power

  1141. to serve other

  1142. people.

  1143. And Jesus is saying

1144. do you want to be

  1145. great?

1146. Do you want to be

  1147. first among

  1148. my disciples?

  1149. Then try on

  1150. these labels

  1151. for size.

  1152. Be a diakonos

  1153. and a doulos.

  1154. We already saw

  1155. that the word

  1156. diakonos means

  1157. be a table waiter

  1158. who is there

  1159. to meet the needs

  1160. of other people

  1161. and clean up

  1162. their messes.

  1163. But then

  1164. what is a doulos?

  1165. A doulos

  1166. is a slave.

  1167. Is that how

  1168. any of you

  1169. identify yourself

  1170. as a slave?

  1171. In our late

  1172. modern western

  1173. culture of

  1174. self-expressive

  1175. individualism

  1176. we're all searching

  1177. for these identity

  1178. markers so that

  1179. we can say

  1180. who we

  1181. uniquely are

  1182. in this me

  1183. culture

  1184. so that I

  1185. can tell you

  1186. the truth

  1187. about myself.

  1188. Right?

  1189. But how many

  1190. of us

  1191. define ourselves

  1192. as a slave

  1193. of Jesus Christ?

  1194. Listen to

  1195. Romans chapter

    Romans 1:1

  1196. 1 verse 1.

  1197. This is the

  1198. greatest letter

  1199. in the New

  1200. Testament and

  1201. it opens with

  1202. these words.

  1203. He says Paul

  1204. a slave

  1205. a doulos

  1206. of Christ Jesus

  1207. called to be

  1208. an apostle

  1209. and set apart

  1210. for the gospel

  1211. of God.

  1212. How does Paul

  1213. identify himself?

  1214. What does he say

  1215. is the first

  1216. and the most

  1217. important thing

  1218. that you need

  1219. to know about

  1220. him?

  1221. He's a slave

  1222. and that's what

  1223. a Christian is.

  1224. This transcends

  1225. all other

  1226. identity markers

  1227. that you

  1228. willingly

  1229. surrendered

  1230. yourself

  1231. to the lordship

  1232. of Jesus Christ

  1233. and if you don't

  1234. identify yourself

  1235. as a slave

  1236. of Jesus

  1237. you need to

  1238. ask yourself

  1239. am I really

  1240. even a Christian?

  1241. Paul says

  1242. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1243. chapter 4

  1244. he says

  1245. for what we

  1246. preach is not

  1247. ourselves

  1248. but Jesus Christ

  1249. as Lord

  1250. and ourselves

  1251. as your slaves

  1252. for Jesus'

  1253. sake.

  1254. So if we

  1255. measure

  1256. greatness

  1257. by how much

  1258. of a slave

  1259. you are

  1260. well how great

  1261. are we?

  1262. How great

  1263. are we?

  1264. The third

  1265. choice we have

  1266. to make

  1267. is not just

  1268. a choice

  1269. between self

  1270. seeking

  1271. and self

  1272. sacrifice

  1273. and a choice

  1274. between power

  1275. and service

  1276. but we also

  1277. need to choose

  1278. between security

  1279. and suffering.

  1280. We need to

  1281. choose between

  1282. security and

  1283. suffering and

  1284. Jesus says

  1285. to James and

  1286. John

  1287. he says in

  1288. verse 38

  1289. you don't know

  1290. what you're

  1291. asking

  1292. can you drink

  1293. the cup I

  1294. drink or be

  1295. baptized with

  1296. the baptism

  1297. I'm baptized

  1298. with and they

  1299. say we can

  1300. and again

  1301. they didn't

  1302. know what

  1303. Jesus was

  1304. talking about

  1305. they thought

  1306. that Jesus

  1307. cup was

  1308. the wine

  1309. that they'd

  1310. be drinking

  1311. at the

  1312. messianic

  1313. banquet in

  1314. the kingdom

  1315. of God

  1316. and they

  1317. thought that

  1318. Jesus'

  1319. baptism were

  1320. like those

  1321. luxurious

  1322. pre-banquet

  1323. baths that

  1324. King Herod was

  1325. known to enjoy

  1326. before a good

  1327. feast

  1328. and they're

  1329. excited about

  1330. all of this

  1331. they're excited

  1332. about the

  1333. security and the

  1334. comfort that

  1335. they're going

  1336. to enjoy when

  1337. Jesus becomes

  1338. king

  1339. and Jesus

  1340. says to them

  1341. in verse 39

  1342. you will drink

  1343. the cup I

  1344. drink and be

  1345. baptized with

  1346. the baptism I

  1347. am baptized

  1348. with

  1349. he's saying

  1350. James and

  1351. John you will

  1352. have your own

  1353. little cups

  1354. not of wine

  1355. but of

  1356. suffering

  1357. and you will

  1358. have your own

  1359. smaller baptisms

  1360. not these

  1361. luxuriant

  1362. baths

  1363. but little

  1364. baptisms of

  1365. persecution

  1366. salvation

  1367. and what's

  1368. amazing to me

  1369. and what gives

  1370. me such hope

  1371. is that

  1372. God changes

  1373. these men

  1374. in such a

  1375. radical way

  1376. these disciples

  1377. who are

  1378. self-seeking

  1379. and power

  1380. hungry

  1381. and security

  1382. focused

  1383. they become

  1384. so transformed

  1385. by the

  1386. crucifixion

  1387. and the

  1388. resurrection

  1389. of Jesus

  1390. Christ

  1391. that they

  1392. actually begin

  1393. to identify

  1394. themselves

  1395. as slaves

  1396. of Jesus

  1397. and James

  1398. James will

  1399. go on to

  1400. serve Jesus

  1401. to the point

  1402. where he

  1403. loses his

  1404. head

  1405. at the

  1406. orders of

  1407. King Herod

  1408. Antipas

  1409. which we

  1410. read about

  1411. in Acts

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  1412. chapter 12

  1413. and John

  1414. will go on

  1415. to serve

  1416. Jesus to the

  1417. point where

  1418. he's exiled

  1419. in the

  1420. isle of

  1421. Patmos

  1422. under the

  1423. reign of

  1424. emperor

  1425. Domitian

  1426. which we

  1427. read about

  1428. in Revelation

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1429. chapter 1

  1430. and for

  1431. these men

  1432. their voluntary

  1433. loss of

  1434. security

  1435. and their

  1436. willing embrace

  1437. of suffering

  1438. became for

  1439. them a

  1440. joyful

  1441. participation

  1442. in the

  1443. very sufferings

  1444. of their

  1445. servant king

  1446. Jesus

  1447. and they

  1448. counted it

  1449. great joy

  1450. to be

  1451. considered

  1452. worthy

  1453. to suffer

  1454. with Jesus

  1455. and so

  1456. friends

  1457. you might

  1458. not suffer

  1459. beheading

  1460. you might

  1461. not suffer

  1462. exile

  1463. but if you're

  1464. going to be

  1465. a disciple

  1466. you are

  1467. called to

  1468. be conformed

  1469. to the

  1470. image

  1471. of the

  1472. suffering

  1473. servant

  1474. Jesus

  1475. and you've

  1476. got to

  1477. make that

  1478. choice

  1479. now

  1480. how does

  1481. this apply

  1482. we're out

  1483. of time

  1484. and I hope

  1485. the Holy

  1486. Spirit has

  1487. been applying

  1488. this to you

  1489. as I've

  1490. been preaching

  1491. but I do

  1492. want to

  1493. make a few

  1494. specific points

  1495. of application

  1496. and the first

  1497. thing

  1498. is I want

  1499. you to think

  1500. about your

  1501. body

  1502. your body

  1503. because as

  1504. Jesus came

  1505. to serve

  1506. and create

  1507. this counterculture

  1508. of servants

  1509. he wants us

  1510. to be thinking

  1511. differently

  1512. about ourselves

  1513. the Apostle

  1514. Paul says

  1515. in 1 Corinthians

  1516. 6

  1517. you are not

  1518. your own

  1519. you were bought

  1520. at a price

  1521. therefore honor

  1522. God with your

  1523. bodies

  1524. a Christian

  1525. is a purchased

  1526. person

  1527. which means

  1528. that

  1529. you're no longer

  1530. free to do

  1531. with your body

  1532. and your time

  1533. and your energy

  1534. whatever you

  1535. want to do

  1536. you've been

  1537. saved to serve

  1538. and the first

  1539. place we begin

  1540. to do that

  1541. is just with

  1542. our body

  1543. second thing

  1544. I want you

  1545. to think about

  1546. is the church

  1547. when we gather

  1548. together on Sundays

  1549. when you gather

  1550. midweek

  1551. in our homes

  1552. as we go

  1553. are we praying

  1554. Lord who do you

  1555. want me to serve

  1556. and how do you

  1557. want me to serve

  1558. them

  1559. how can I

  1560. pray for them

  1561. encourage them

  1562. listen to them

  1563. carry their burdens

1564. how do you want me

  1565. to serve them

  1566. how can I

  1567. show up today

  1568. with this attitude

  1569. that says

  1570. at your service

  1571. I've not come here

  1572. today to be served

  1573. but to serve

  1574. and if you don't

  1575. have a way

  1576. to do that

  1577. I encourage you

  1578. to find a ministry

  1579. team

  1580. get involved

  1581. in a community

  1582. group

  1583. find other people

  1584. ask God

  1585. to put people

  1586. on your heart

  1587. and begin

  1588. to serve them

  1589. the third thing

1590. I want us to think

  1591. about is our homes

  1592. and our workplaces

  1593. as you think about

  1594. your spouse

  1595. or your roommates

  1596. or your parents

  1597. whomever you live

  1598. with

  1599. and you think

  1600. about your boss

  1601. and the people

  1602. you manage

  1603. and your clients

  1604. it's so easy

  1605. for us to say

  1606. you know

  1607. I'll serve you

1608. if and to the degree

  1609. that you serve me

  1610. and really that's

1611. the way of the world

  1612. isn't it

  1613. I'll serve you

1614. if and to the degree

  1615. that you serve me

1616. but the way of Christ

  1617. is to say

  1618. you know

  1619. I'm going to serve

  1620. you

  1621. and I'm going to

  1622. lay myself down

  1623. in sacrificial

  1624. self-giving

  1625. for you

  1626. regardless of

  1627. whether you serve

  1628. me or not

  1629. because that's

  1630. the way

  1631. Jesus served me

  1632. the fourth thing

  1633. I want to say

  1634. as I close

  1635. is I'd like to

  1636. apply this

  1637. to our politics

  1638. it's clear

  1639. that the church

  1640. in North America

  1641. has been following

  1642. the way

  1643. of our Caesars

  1644. and if you

  1645. are someone

  1646. who's known

  1647. more for your politics

  1648. than you are

  1649. for your religion

  1650. it's very likely

  1651. that you've turned

  1652. your politics

  1653. into your religion

  1654. and if you're new

  1655. at Christ

1656. I just want to say

  1657. we are part

  1658. of the exhausted

  1659. majority

  1660. this congregation

  1661. is center left

  1662. center right

  1663. but whatever

  1664. it doesn't matter

  1665. we're just weary

  1666. of polarization

  1667. we're weary

  1668. of partisanship

  1669. and we love

  1670. that sign

  1671. in 2020

  1672. that said

  1673. any functioning adult

  1674. we just

  1675. want that bumper sticker

  1676. we want that sign

  1677. and I'm tempted

  1678. to say

  1679. that we are called

  1680. as a church

  1681. to charitable

  1682. sober minded

  1683. moderation

  1684. in these things

  1685. in these political things

1686. but what I want to say

  1687. beyond that today

1688. is that we are actually

  1689. called

  1690. not to advocate

  1691. for this version

  1692. or that version

  1693. of the United States

  1694. this red version

  1695. or this blue version

  1696. of America

  1697. but what we're called

1698. to do as a church

  1699. is to bear witness

  1700. to a different kingdom

  1701. altogether

  1702. the church

  1703. is called

  1704. to be a sign

  1705. and an instrument

  1706. and a foretaste

  1707. of this subversive

  1708. cross shaped

  1709. upside down

  1710. kingdom of God

  1711. in which

  1712. the greatest

  1713. people among us

  1714. and the first people

  1715. among us

  1716. are the people

  1717. who act like servants

  1718. and like slaves

  1719. and to the degree

  1720. that the church

  1721. is living that out

  1722. we might have

  1723. some hope

  1724. to be salt

  1725. in the earth

  1726. and light

  1727. to the world

  1728. so Jesus

  1729. has called us

  1730. right

  1731. he's come

  1732. to serve us

  1733. and he's calling us

  1734. to be

  1735. a counterculture

  1736. of servants

1737. and may he give us

  1738. the grace

  1739. and the power

1740. to do that very thing

1741. in the name of the Father

  1742. Son and Holy Spirit

  1743. Amen

  1744. Amen

  1745. Amen

  1746. Amen

  1747. Amen
