  5. The reading today is from Paul's letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4, verses 1 through 16.

    Ephesians 4:1–16

  6. I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of calling to which you have been called,

  7. with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

  8. eager to maintain the unity of spirit and the bond of peace.

  9. There is one body and one spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call.

  10. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all,

  11. who was over all and through all and in all.

  12. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  13. Therefore, it says, when he ascended on high, he led a host of captives,

  14. and he gave gifts to men.

  15. In saying he ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?

  16. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens,

  17. that he might fill all things.

  18. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers

  19. to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

  20. until we all attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God,

  21. to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

  22. so that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by waves

  23. and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning,

  24. by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  25. Rather, speaking the truth in love,

  26. we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head,

  27. into Christ, from whom the whole body,

  28. joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,

  29. when each part is working properly,

  30. makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

  31. This is the word of the Lord.

  32. Thanks be to God.

  33. Good morning, Christ Church.

  34. First things first today, I want to wish you all a happy birthday.

  35. Happy birthday, Christ Church.

  36. Our church was born on April 16, 2006,

  37. after about a year of raising funds

  38. and moving the Garrett family and the St. Clair family here

  39. and gathering a core team.

  40. Our little church startup began in the Marsh Theater,

  41. the Gaia Arts Building in downtown Berkeley on Shattuck and Alston.

  42. And by God's grace, we're still here.

  43. And we survived till our 18th birthday.

  44. So thanks be to God.

  45. After Easter each year,

  46. if you've been here for a couple of Easter's,

  47. you'll know that our preaching shifts from the four Gospels,

  48. Gospels, and we moved to the Acts of the Apostles

  49. and the letters of the New Testament,

  50. and we go basically from celebrating the resurrection of Jesus

  51. to then thinking out together the implications

  52. and the consequences for what it means to be

  53. his resurrection people.

  54. So just as a reminder,

  55. the risen Jesus spent 40 days

  56. between his resurrection and his ascension,

  57. and he was training and teaching his disciples

  58. for church planting and church development.

  59. And then the day of Pentecost came,

  60. which he was preparing them for,

  61. and the Holy Spirit was poured out,

  62. and the gospel was proclaimed,

  63. and many people were converted,

  64. and the first church was born,

  65. the church in Jerusalem.

  66. And it launched this church planting movement

  67. that would go out throughout the Roman Empire

  68. through these appointed people

  69. that Jesus gave to the church,

  70. the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,

  71. the shepherds, and the teachers.

  72. And so over the next three Sundays,

  73. we want to be thinking about the nature of this movement.

  74. We want to look at some New Testament texts

  75. that lay out some of the basic manual

  76. and fundamental instructions

  77. for being the church

  78. that the resurrected Jesus launched

  79. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  80. And our hope is that we can equip you

  81. with a New Testament vision

  82. of the nature and the purpose of the church,

  83. and that you can see the gifts

  84. that the Holy Spirit has given to each one of you

  85. for building up that church,

  86. and you can think about the ways

  87. that your time and your talents and treasures

  88. might be stewarded for the mission of the church.

  89. The apostle Paul uses many different analogies

  90. for the church.

  91. He calls the church a bride,

  92. a building, a commonwealth,

  93. a family, a flock of sheep.

  94. But his favorite analogy that he uses more frequently

  95. than any of the others is the body,

  96. the body of Christ.

  97. And he mentions it four times in Ephesians 4.

  98. So that's what we're going to be looking at today

  99. and the next couple weeks.

  100. And if you want to open those Bibles in your pews,

  101. you can do that.

  102. Page 946 is where we're going to be looking.

  103. And the apostle Paul's writing to this little church plant

  104. in the city of Ephesus around the year 62 A.D.

  105. while he's in prison in Rome.

  106. And he's basically saying to these friends

  107. that here's what it means

  108. to be the resurrection people of God.

  109. Here's what it means to be the body of Christ.

  110. And I'm going to attempt to just unpack this statement

  111. over the next little bit.

  112. That Christ's body is called.

  113. Christ's body is triune.

  114. And Christ's body is maturing.

  115. Three things we want to think about the body of Christ.

  116. It's called.

  117. It's triune.

  118. And it's maturing.

  119. So let's start with the Christ's body is called.

  120. And you can see here in chapter 4 verse 1 it says,

  121. I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord,

  122. urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling

  123. to which you've been called.

  124. A key to the exposition of the latter half of this epistle

  125. is this word therefore

  126. because it points us back to the first half of this letter

  127. and emphasizes that the church,

  128. the body of Christ,

  129. is something which follows

  130. as a logical conclusion

  131. of what's gone before.

  132. And what is that?

  133. Well, Paul says,

  134. therefore,

  135. because of the outline

  136. of God's eternal plan of salvation

  137. that I gave to you in Ephesians 1, 2, and 3,

  138. you are to walk worthy of the calling

  139. to which you've been called.

  140. So look back with me, if you will,

  141. at Ephesians 1.

  142. Ephesians 1, 3 says,

  143. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

  144. who has blessed us in Christ

  145. with every spiritual blessing

  146. in the heavenly places.

  147. And he goes on in verse 7 and he says,

  148. In him we have redemption through his blood,

  149. the forgiveness of our trespasses

  150. according to the riches of his grace.

  151. Wow.

  152. Wow.

  153. So why did God choose to bless us

  154. and redeem us and forgive us by his grace?

  155. Well, he goes on and he says in verse 10,

  156. He did this as a plan for the fullness of time

  157. to unite all things in Christ,

  158. things in heaven,

  159. and things on earth.

  160. So what he's saying is that the church,

  161. the body of Christ,

  162. cannot exist apart from

  163. the Lord Jesus Christ himself

  164. and apart from his work

  165. of atonement

  166. and redemption through his blood.

  167. But then the question arises,

  168. how do we enter into the church?

  169. How do we enter into the body of Christ?

  170. What's necessary for that to happen?

  171. And the apostle goes on

  172. in verse 12 of chapter 1.

  173. He says,

  174. We who were the first to hope in Christ

  175. might be for the praise of his glory.

  176. And in him you also,

  177. when you heard the word of truth,

  178. the gospel of your salvation,

  179. and believed in him,

  180. you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  181. This is how we enter into the kingdom of God.

  182. You hear that word of truth.

  183. You hear the gospel of salvation.

  184. And as a result,

  185. you believe it

  186. and you place your hope

  187. and your trust entirely in Jesus Christ.

  188. This is what Paul means

  189. when he says,

  190. The calling to which you've been called.

  191. Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  192. is basically an elaboration on this.

  193. It's who is this apostle?

  194. Who are the people

  195. that this apostle is exhorting?

  196. Well, he says in chapter 2, verse 1,

  197. You all were dead

  198. in your trespasses and sins

  199. in which you once walked,

  200. following the course of this world,

  201. following the prince of the power of the air,

  202. the spirit that is now at work

  203. in the sons of disobedience.

  204. That's what you all once were.

  205. You were dominated by sin.

  206. You were slaves of the devil.

  207. You were spiritually dead.

  208. He says in verse 3

  209. that you were under the wrath

  210. and condemnation of God.

  211. That's what the church is.

  212. The church is a gathering of people

  213. who know that they could do nothing

  214. for their salvation.

  215. A people who are completely helpless

  216. and hopeless

  217. to bring about your reconciliation to God.

  218. But thanks be to God

  219. that now you are members of Christ's church,

  220. his body,

  221. solely because of what God has done to you.

  222. You are the calling to you in Jesus

  223. by the spirit.

  224. It's the calling to which you've been called.

  225. You following me so far?

  226. I know this is a lot,

  227. but you've got to understand the therefore.

  228. So look at chapter 2, verse 4.

  229. But God, being rich in mercy

  230. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  231. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  232. made us alive together with Christ.

  233. By grace you have been saved.

  234. You're a people who've been quickened

  235. and who've been regenerated by the Holy Spirit.

  236. That God has come and he's put new life into you

  237. and he's given you the ability

  238. to see the truth in Jesus

  239. and the ability to then put your trust

  240. and your weight upon him.

  241. Verse 6,

  242. and he's raised us up with him

  243. and seated us with him

  244. in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

  245. The church is a people who realize

  246. that you've actually been united

  247. to the living Christ.

  248. And you realize the implications

  249. and the consequences

  250. of the resurrection of Jesus for you.

  251. That you're alive

  252. and you're raised up with Jesus.

  253. What Paul is saying

  254. is that you are what you are

  255. as a result of what God has done for you

  256. and what he's done to you

  257. and what he's done in you.

  258. It's the calling

  259. to which you've been called.

  260. So when the apostle writes,

  261. therefore,

  262. he's pointing us back

  263. to these great doctrines

  264. that he's elaborated in detail

  265. and he says,

  266. you are a people

  267. who've been saved

  268. by the precious blood of Jesus.

  269. You're a people

  270. who've been regenerated by the Spirit.

  271. You're a people

  272. who've been given access

  273. through Jesus

  274. by the Spirit

  275. to the Father, he says,

  276. so that you can go there

  277. whenever you want.

  278. You've been brought

  279. into God's kingdom,

  280. into God's family,

  281. into God's church,

  282. into this body of Christ

  283. on the basis of trusting in it

  284. and living by these truths.

  285. It's the calling

  286. to which you've been called.

  287. Therefore, Paul says,

  288. walk worthy of that calling

  289. to which you've been called.

  290. Therefore, walk worthy

  291. of that calling

  292. to which you've been called.

  293. God's gracious calling

  294. bestows upon us

  295. high privileges

  296. and also high responsibilities.

  297. You've been called

  298. into these incredible blessings

  299. of salvation,

  300. so now there's a standard way

  301. of life that corresponds

  302. to that calling.

  303. To walk worthy of it

  304. means to walk

  305. with an equal weight

  306. and an equal balance,

  307. that you've received

  308. this calling,

  309. so now balance out

  310. that calling

  311. with your character

  312. and with your conduct.

  313. And listen again

  314. to what he says.

  315. I therefore,

  316. this is chapter 4, verse 1,

    Isaiah 4:1

  317. I therefore,

  318. a prisoner for the Lord,

  319. urge you

  320. to walk in a manner

  321. worthy of the calling

  322. to which you've been called

  323. with all humility

  324. and gentleness,

  325. with patience,

  326. bearing with one another

  327. in love,

  328. eager to maintain

  329. the unity of the Spirit

  330. in the bond of peace.

  331. The apostle's writing

  332. to people

  333. who've been called

  334. into Jesus Christ,

  335. and what's his appeal?

  336. What's his exhortation

  337. to them?

  338. He says,

  339. you ought to be a people

  340. who are eager,

  341. a people who make

  342. every effort,

  343. a people who strive

  344. diligently

  345. not to produce a unity

  346. or to create a unity

  347. or to achieve a unity,

  348. but you're to be eager

  349. to maintain the unity

  350. and to keep the unity

  351. and to guard the unity

  352. and to develop the unity

  353. that the Holy Spirit

  354. has created among those

  355. whom God has called

  356. into Jesus Christ.

  357. So there is a unity

  358. that is already in existence

  359. among those who've been called.

  360. There's a unity of all those

  361. who've experienced

  362. the calling

  363. into this glorious reality

  364. of the gospel message

  365. that Paul has just unfolded

  366. for us in Ephesians 1-3.

  367. Now if you look around this room,

  368. and I encourage you,

  369. you can turn and look around

  370. and see who's seated around you.

  371. If you look around,

  372. everybody's afraid

  373. to look around.

  374. It's okay.

  375. You can look around.

  376. You can move your head.

  377. It's okay.

  378. If you look around this room,

  379. you probably see many people

  380. that you don't know yet

  381. or don't know well.

  382. But what I want to help you see

  383. is that many of those people,

  384. most of those people

  385. have been called

  386. into Jesus Christ.

  387. And if that's true,

  388. then there's a unity

  389. that already exists among you,

  390. whether you like it or not,

  391. because you share

  392. a mutual calling

  393. into Jesus Christ.

  394. Now the Greek word

  395. for the church is ekklesia,

  396. which means the called,

  397. the called out.

  398. And that means that the church

  399. are the called out ones,

  400. people who've been called out

  401. from your old life

  402. into a new life

  403. in Jesus Christ.

  404. People who,

  405. as Paul says elsewhere,

  406. have been called out

  407. from the dominion of darkness

  408. and brought into the kingdom

  409. of the Son

  410. that He loves.

  411. And so when the apostle says,

  412. walk worthy

  413. with humility

  414. and gentleness

  415. and patience

  416. and forbearance

  417. and love,

  418. eager to maintain

  419. the unity of the Spirit

  420. and the bond of peace,

  421. what he's saying is

  422. don't allow anything

  423. to disrupt

  424. the unity

  425. of the Holy Spirit.

  426. Don't let anything

  427. interfere

  428. with the spiritual unity

  429. into which you've been brought

  430. by the calling

  431. of the Holy Spirit.

  432. So friends,

  433. our task,

  434. our task

  435. is to do no harm

  436. to the unity

  437. of the Holy Spirit.

  438. Our task

  439. is to be eager

  440. to make this invisible unity

  441. of the Holy Spirit

  442. a visible

  443. and tangible reality

  444. in the life

  445. of the church.

  446. Now what does that mean

  447. for so many of us

  448. who do not yet

  449. know one another?

  450. Well the apostle

  451. is exhorting us

  452. to be eager

  453. and make every effort

  454. and to strive diligently

  455. to maintain

  456. the unity of the Spirit

  457. and the bond of peace.

  458. And so the first step

  459. is that we just need

  460. to get to know each other.

  461. And we need to get

  462. to know the other people

  463. that have been united

  464. together

  465. because of their shared

  466. and mutual calling

  467. into Jesus Christ.

  468. And here are some

  469. of the opportunities

  470. we have

  471. to maintain

  472. the unity

  473. of the Holy Spirit.

  474. First of all,

  475. I want you to know

  476. we gather here

  477. every Sunday

  478. and you are encouraged

  479. to come

  480. every time.

  481. And in fact,

  482. many of you came

  483. at 10.15

  484. on Easter Sunday.

  485. You can do that

  486. every Sunday of the year.

  487. And I want you to know

  488. that you are welcome

  489. to not sit

  490. where you normally sit.

  491. You can sit

  492. by someone different,

  493. somebody you don't know.

  494. You can look for people

  495. before, during,

  496. and after the service

  497. and you can go

  498. talk to them.

  499. You can talk to them.

  500. Secondly,

  501. do not run for the exits

  502. at the end of the service

  503. but plan to linger.

  504. Plan to make yourself

  505. available to know

  506. and be known

  507. over our coffee hour,

  508. over our lunch time

  509. on a monthly basis.

  510. And when you gather

  511. around those tables

  512. later today,

  513. you can talk about

  514. the weather,

  515. you can talk about

  516. the warriors,

  517. that's great.

  518. But ask questions.

  519. Tell me about

  520. your spiritual journey.

  521. Tell me how

  522. I can pray for you.

  523. Third thing is

  524. I would encourage you

  525. to engage

  526. in opportunities

  527. this spring

  528. like our dinners for four

  529. and our Saturday morning

  530. work day

  531. and our loaves

  532. and fishes ministry,

  533. our second Wednesday

  534. prayer meeting.

  535. Third thing is

  536. if you're not yet

  537. part of a ministry team

  538. here on Sundays

  539. where you serve

  540. once a month,

  541. you can join one today.

  542. If you're not yet

  543. part of a community group

  544. that's restart in August,

  545. plan to join one.

  546. And the last thing

  547. I'd say is

  548. be proactive

  549. and take initiative

  550. to invite people

  551. to dinner,

  552. go for a walk,

  553. grab coffee,

  554. so that spiritual

  555. friendships can form.

  556. These are some

  557. of the small ways

  558. that we can walk

  559. worthy of the calling

  560. to which we have been

  561. mutually called.

  562. And these are really

  563. simple ways

  564. that we can be eager

  565. to maintain

  566. the unity of the spirit

  567. in the bond

  568. of peace.

  569. Christ's body

  570. is called.

  571. You with me?

  572. Christ's body is called.

  573. I don't know

  574. if you're with me.

  575. Okay.

  576. Stop now.

  577. Alright.

  578. Christ's body is called

  579. but Christ's body

  580. is also triune.

  581. Christ's body is triune.

  582. Now you really

  583. got to buckle up

  584. for this part.

  585. Okay.

  586. The apostle goes on

  587. to describe the nature

  588. of the church's unity

  589. that's produced

  590. by the Holy Spirit.

  591. And here's what he says

  592. in verse 4.

  593. He says,

  594. there is one body

  595. and one spirit

  596. just as you were called

  597. to the one hope

  598. that belongs to your call,

  599. one Lord,

  600. one faith,

  601. one baptism,

  602. one God

  603. and Father of all

  604. who is over all

  605. and through all

  606. and in all.

  607. Now notice

  608. the exalted way

  609. in which the church,

  610. the body of Christ

  611. is described.

  612. It's not just a question

  613. of our friendliness

  614. or our fellowship

  615. or our desiring

  616. to hang out

  617. with one another

  618. and do life together

  619. but rather

  620. life together

  621. in the church

  622. is lifted up

  623. into this realm

  624. of the blessed

  625. holy trinity,

  626. spirit,

  627. Lord,

  628. and Father.

  629. The church

  630. in her unity

  631. is not to be conceived

  632. in merely human terms

  633. of our own organic relationship

  634. or our own organized structures

  635. but rather the church

  636. is to be seen

  637. in terms of the God

  638. who is three persons

  639. yet one being.

  640. And we are to have

  641. a God-centered,

  642. God-focused vision

  643. of the church.

  644. Observe that this word one

  645. is used seven times

  646. in these three verses.

  647. There is one body

  648. produced by one Holy Spirit.

  649. Now the unity

  650. and the oneness

  651. of the body

  652. and the church

  653. is like what we find

  654. in the physical body,

  655. Paul says.

  656. My body is not

  657. this loose grouping

  658. of mechanically attached parts.

  659. You know,

  660. my head's not stapled

  661. onto my neck

  662. and my arms not sewn on

  663. to my torso

  664. like Frankenstein.

  665. No,

  666. the marvel

  667. and the mystery

  668. of the human body

  669. is that while it consists

  670. of many different parts

  671. with all these various functions,

  672. they're all one.

  673. They're all bound together

  674. in a vital,

  675. organic union.

  676. It's not that I have fingers

  677. stuck onto my hand

  678. and then hands

  679. stuck onto my arms

  680. and arms stuck onto my shoulders.

  681. It's that all these parts

  682. came out of an original cell,

  683. one germ of life

  684. and all of these parts of me

  685. are extensions

  686. and manifestations

  687. of the life

  688. and the vitality

  689. of my head.

  690. Of my head.

  691. So to what does the apostle

  692. compare the life

  693. and the unity

  694. of this body?

  695. He says,

  696. the unity of the body

  697. of the church

  698. is like the unity

  699. that characterizes

  700. the blessed Holy Trinity.

  701. The oneness of the body

  702. is like the oneness

  703. of the Spirit,

  704. the Lord,

  705. and the Father.

  706. This mystical union

  707. between the Father,

  708. Son,

  709. and Holy Spirit

  710. from all eternity,

  711. three in one,

  712. one in three,

  713. that is the unity

  714. that exists

  715. in the body

  716. of the church.

  717. Each of those three persons

  718. and the one Godhead

  719. play a part

  720. in creating the life

  721. and producing the unity

  722. of the church.

  723. And look at what Paul says

  724. in verse four.

  725. He says,

  726. there's one body

  727. and one spirit

  728. just as you were called

  729. to one hope

  730. that belongs to your call.

  731. The Holy Spirit

  732. calls us into the unity

  733. of the body

  734. by convicting us

  735. and regenerating us

  736. and enabling us

  737. to believe

  738. and he gives life

  739. and power

  740. to the body

  741. and he enters

  742. into us

  743. and he gives us

  744. that one hope

  745. that belongs

  746. to your call.

  747. That one hope

  748. is that the Lord Jesus

  749. is going to come again,

  750. that he's going to judge

  751. evil and sin

  752. in the world,

  753. that he's going to

  754. renovate the world,

  755. he's going to raise

  756. our bodies,

  757. he's going to set up

  758. the kingdom of God

  759. finally and fully

  760. and we are going to reign

  761. with him in glory.

  762. That's the one hope

  763. of the one spirit

  764. that he creates

  765. in the one church.

  766. And he goes on

  767. and he says

  768. there's one Lord

  769. and there's one faith

  770. and there's one baptism.

  771. The unity of the church

  772. comes from the conviction

  773. that there's only

  774. one Lord of this world

  775. and that's Jesus.

  776. As the apostle Peter

  777. preaches in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  778. he says,

  779. salvation is found

  780. in no one else

  781. for there is no other name

  782. under heaven

  783. given to people

  784. by which we must be saved.

  785. That's how you know

  786. you're part of the church.

  787. When you're gathered together

  788. with people who believe

  789. that the absolutely unique

  790. son of God

  791. is the only mediator

  792. with God

  793. and that he saved us

  794. by his cross

  795. and he's been raised

  796. from the dead

  797. and that's what makes him

  798. the one Lord.

  799. And then there's one faith.

  800. Justification by faith.

  801. That our Lord

  802. took our unrighteousness

  803. onto himself

  804. and he took his righteousness

  805. and put it onto us

  806. and the way that we receive that

  807. is simply by faith.

  808. And then there's one baptism.

  809. That we're no longer

  810. in the realm

  811. or in the kingdom

  812. of Adam

  813. but now we've been

  814. taken out of that realm

  815. and we've been baptized

  816. into the kingdom

  817. and into the realm

  818. of Jesus.

  819. One body,

  820. one spirit,

  821. one hope,

  822. one Lord,

  823. one faith,

  824. one baptism,

  825. one God

  826. and Father

  827. of all.

  828. And he says that

  829. God and Father

  830. is exalted

  831. over the church,

  832. his life and power

  833. is at work

  834. through the church

  835. and his presence

  836. dwells right here

  837. within the church.

  838. Whoa.

  839. Now you might be saying

  840. my goodness

  841. why is our pastor

  842. giving us this

  843. high flying theology today?

  844. I only had

  845. one cup of coffee.

  846. But here's the thing.

  847. Most of our troubles

  848. and most of our problems

  849. in life

  850. arise chiefly

  851. from the fact

  852. that we persistently

  853. start with ourselves.

  854. And one of the main

  855. results of sin

  856. is that we put ourselves

  857. at the center

  858. and we spend time

  859. thinking about ourselves

  860. and all of our personal

  861. and individualistic

  862. interests and pursuits.

  863. But what the New Testament

  864. does is it pulls us

  865. right out of ourselves.

  866. And it says that

  867. you've been called

  868. into the mystical

  869. spiritual

  870. eternal body

  871. of Christ himself

  872. of which each one of us

  873. is just one tiny

  874. little part.

  875. And all

  876. as the three

  877. blessed persons

  878. of the glorious

  879. holy trinity

  880. are one

  881. so we who worship

  882. and belong

  883. to the triune God

  884. are likewise

  885. of necessity

  886. one

  887. and we better do

  888. nothing

  889. to damage

  890. that oneness.

  891. you see

  892. it's by looking at

  893. and it's by believing in

  894. and it's by being amazed

  895. by the triune God

  896. in his work of salvation

  897. that we will

  898. maintain the unity

  899. of the spirit

  900. and the bond of peace.

  901. And if we look

  902. at anything else

  903. that unity

  904. is going to get destroyed.

  905. You see

  906. the church

  907. and her unity

  908. is the consequence

  909. of our belief

  910. and of our participation

  911. in this great

  912. and glorious doctrine

  913. that God the Father

  914. has provided

  915. in his son

  916. the way of salvation

  917. and he mediates

  918. that salvation

  919. through the operation

  920. of the Holy Spirit.

  921. And if we truly

  922. understood

  923. and we truly live

  924. by this doctrine

  925. of the triune God

  926. any idea

  927. of self-seeking

  928. of self-importance

  929. of self-interest

  930. which is completely

  931. lacking

  932. in God himself

  933. any of those things

  934. that would

  935. would disrupt

  936. and resist

  937. the unity of the church

  938. would be utterly

  939. unthinkable

  940. and impossible

  941. for us.

  942. So Christ's body

  943. you gotta know

  944. that Christ's body

  945. is called

  946. and you're only part

  947. of that body

  948. if you've been called

  949. and Christ's body

  950. is triune

  951. and you're only part

  952. of that body

  953. if you believe

  954. in this God

  955. I'm describing to you.

  956. But the last thing is

  957. that Christ's body

  958. is maturing.

  959. Christ's body

  960. is maturing

  961. and I wish we had

  962. more time

  963. for the rest

  964. of this text

  965. but here's the big

  966. idea.

  967. You notice

  968. these key words

  969. that are in verses

  970. 7 to 16

  971. and the words

  972. are mature

  973. and grow.

  974. Mature

  975. and grow.

  976. Now Jesus himself

  977. said in the gospel

  978. of John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  979. he said the way

  980. that we enter

  981. into the kingdom

  982. of God

  983. is that we're born

  984. again.

  985. We're born from above.

  986. We're born as he says

  987. of the Holy Spirit.

  988. And when we're born

  989. again like that

  990. we begin as infants

  991. who drink milk.

  992. But we need to grow

  993. and become toddlers

  994. who eat solids.

  995. And then we need

  996. to keep developing

  997. so that we're teens

  998. we're kids

  999. and then we're teens

  1000. and we mature

  1001. all the way up

  1002. into full adulthood

  1003. where we eat meat

  1004. or a vegan substitute

  1005. beyond burgers

  1006. whatever.

  1007. But the stress here

  1008. is on how important

  1009. it is

  1010. as the apostle says

  1011. to no longer

  1012. be children.

  1013. We're to no longer

  1014. be children.

  1015. In fact

  1016. we're to develop

  1017. through these

  1018. different stages

  1019. into what he's describing

  1020. as grown up

  1021. Christianity.

  1022. Mature

  1023. Christianity.

  1024. As an individual

  1025. Christian

  1026. and as different

  1027. parts of the

  1028. corporate body

  1029. of Christ

  1030. the apostle says

  1031. we in verse 13

  1032. are to become

  1033. mature

  1034. attaining

  1035. to the whole

  1036. measure

  1037. of the fullness

  1038. of Jesus Christ.

  1039. And he says

  1040. in verse 15

  1041. that we're to grow

  1042. and become

  1043. the mature body

  1044. of him

  1045. who is the head

  1046. that is

  1047. Christ.

  1048. So this body

  1049. is to grow

  1050. and to develop

  1051. and to mature

  1052. under

  1053. and like

  1054. its head.

  1055. And when each

  1056. individual part

  1057. of the body

  1058. is spiritually

  1059. healthy

  1060. then the whole

  1061. body

  1062. will be

  1063. complete

  1064. and will be

  1065. functional.

  1066. It will be

  1067. rightly aligned

  1068. he says.

  1069. It will be

  1070. properly

  1071. adjusted.

  1072. It will be

  1073. fully

  1074. developed

  1075. and proportionally

  1076. balanced

  1077. and harmoniously

  1078. coordinated

  1079. under

  1080. the head

  1081. and conformed

  1082. to the likeness

  1083. of its head

  1084. which is

  1085. Jesus.

  1086. Now how does

  1087. a child

  1088. mature into

  1089. the fully

  1090. grown

  1091. and fully

  1092. developed

  1093. adult?

  1094. And how do

  1095. Christians

  1096. and how do

  1097. parts of the

  1098. body of Christ

  1099. mature into

  1100. the fullness

  1101. of the head?

  1102. In other words

  1103. how do all the

  1104. limbs and the

  1105. organs

  1106. how do all

  1107. the fingers

  1108. and the toes

  1109. how do all

  1110. the little

  1111. parts of the

  1112. body

  1113. become filled

  1114. with the life

  1115. and the energy

  1116. of the head?

  1117. Well Paul says

  1118. the way to

  1119. that kind of

  1120. maturity

  1121. and that

  1122. kind of

  1123. life

  1124. and that

  1125. kind of

  1126. growth

  1127. happens in

  1128. the body

  1129. through what

  1130. he says in

  1131. verse 15

  1132. speaking the

  1133. truth in

  1134. love.

  1135. We grow by

  1136. speaking the

  1137. truth in

  1138. love.

  1139. Now this has

  1140. been so

  1141. profoundly

  1142. misinterpreted

  1143. and misunderstood

  1144. so just

  1145. bear with me

  1146. to put it

  1147. negatively

  1148. the apostle

  1149. Paul is not

  1150. saying

  1151. you'll grow

  1152. into the

  1153. maturity of

  1154. Christ by

  1155. being kind

  1156. being friendly

  1157. being nice

  1158. speaking honestly

  1159. but lovingly.

  1160. The apostle is

  1161. not exhorting

  1162. us to say

  1163. kind friendly

  1164. honest things

  1165. and love to

  1166. one another

  1167. though you

  1168. should definitely

  1169. do that.

  1170. This is not

  1171. at all a vague

  1172. or nebulous

  1173. or amorphous

  1174. sentimental notion

  1175. of just be nice

  1176. and you'll grow.

  1177. literally what

  1178. the apostle says

  1179. is truthing

  1180. in love

  1181. we grow.

  1182. Truthing

  1183. in love

  1184. we grow.

  1185. Let's say it

  1186. together.

  1187. Truthing

  1188. in love

  1189. we grow.

  1190. That is

  1191. holding on

  1192. to the truth

  1193. of the gospel.

  1194. Professing

  1195. the truth

  1196. of the gospel.

  1197. Discussing

  1198. the truth

  1199. of the gospel.

  1200. Walking out

  1201. the truth

  1202. of the gospel.

  1203. That's how

  1204. we grow up.

  1205. It's how

  1206. we mature

  1207. as the body

  1208. that has

  1209. Jesus as

  1210. its head.

  1211. And he says

  1212. we are to

  1213. hold on

  1214. to something

  1215. particular

  1216. and something

  1217. definite.

  1218. He says

  1219. we're to

  1220. hold on

  1221. to the

  1222. truth

  1223. with a

  1224. capital

  1225. T.

  1226. The truth

  1227. revealed

  1228. by God.

  1229. The truth

  1230. recorded

  1231. in the

  1232. scriptures.

  1233. We're to

  1234. truth these

  1235. things in

  1236. love.

  1237. We are to

  1238. truth the

  1239. inspired

  1240. authoritative

  1241. doctrines

  1242. and ethics

  1243. that

  1244. have been

  1245. given by

  1246. the

  1247. resurrected

  1248. Jesus

  1249. through

  1250. his

  1251. apostles,

  1252. prophets,

  1253. evangelists,

  1254. shepherds,

  1255. and teachers

  1256. in that

  1257. first generation

  1258. of the

  1259. church

  1260. which God

  1261. saw fit

  1262. to preserve

  1263. for us

  1264. and record

  1265. for us

  1266. in the

  1267. infallible

  1268. word of

  1269. the New

  1270. Testament.

  1271. The apostle

  1272. says do you
