  5. I know that's a little different.

  6. We usually read the scripture reading right after this song.

  7. But I just need to give you all a heads up.

  8. This is going to be an interesting one today, all right?

  9. I don't know if you got a peek at the passage.

  10. It's going to be an interesting one.

  11. And I'm so sorry.

  12. I didn't realize that we have the fourth graders and fifth graders in here.

  13. Because it's going to be a longer one, too.

  14. I'm so sorry.

  15. I'm so sorry.

  16. But last week, of course, was Easter Sunday.

  17. And, you know, Jonathan, of course, he preached on Mark's account of the resurrection of Jesus.

  18. But to conclude our series and Mark's gospel today,

  19. we thought it'd be fitting to cap it off with a sermon on what happens next,

  20. what happens after the resurrection.

  21. So we're going to turn our attention to a teaching that Jesus actually gave before his crucifixion.

  22. But it was a prophetic teaching about what was going to happen after his resurrection and his ascension into heaven.

  23. It's Jesus' longest teaching in the gospel of Mark, Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  24. Now, if you are new here, you have to know that the length of our passage this morning is way longer than we typically select to preach on.

  25. And again, it's going to be a longer sermon.

  26. And I also promise you that we're not one of those churches that's always preaching about the end times and Judgment Day and the end of the world.

  27. But we still are a church that's committed to preaching what we call the whole counsel of God.

  28. We're still a church that wants to preach all that God's spoken and revealed in the Scriptures

  29. because we believe that all Scriptures are breathed out by God.

  30. They're inspired by God and that they're useful for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, and for training us in righteousness

  31. so that all the servants of God might be equipped for every good work.

  32. So this means we're not going to shy away from passages that are unpalatable or unpopular or hard for people to swallow

  33. or even hard for people to understand.

  34. You know, passages like today, Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  35. Thank you, Jonathan.

  36. I hope you had a good spring break.

  37. But all this is to say we're going for it today, okay?

  38. We're going for it.

  39. I won't be able to address all 37 verses in what most Bible interpreters call the most difficult chapter of Mark's gospel.

  40. But I do want to take it on as a whole and help us all get a better hold of it.

  41. But more importantly, I hope that the way I preach will help this text get a better hold of us.

  42. And for this to work, this is why we have this insert in our liturgies this morning.

  43. If you could take that out.

  44. For this to work, I'm going to need you to pay extra close attention to the passage today, okay?

  45. So grab those liturgies.

  46. And as the Bible teacher, Paige Benton-Brown, she likes to say,

  47. I want to see tops of heads, all right?

  48. I want to see your heads down, your noses and your eyes in the Word of God, immersed in the Word of God.

  49. It's extra important for us as we address this long, dense, and difficult passage.

  50. Okay?

  51. That's my beginning stuff.

  52. Why don't we all stand now?

  53. And I'm going to read all 37 verses for us.

  54. This is the gospel of our Lord.

  55. As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him,

  56. Look, teacher, what massive stones, what magnificent buildings.

  57. Do you see all these great buildings, replied Jesus?

  58. Not one stone here will be left on another.

  59. Everyone will be thrown down.

  60. As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple,

  61. Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,

  62. Tell us, when will these things happen?

  63. And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?

  64. Jesus said to them,

  65. Watch out that no one deceives you.

  66. Many will come in my name claiming I am he and will deceive many.

  67. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed.

  68. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

  69. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.

  70. There will be earthquakes in various places and famines.

  71. These are the beginning of birth pains.

  72. You must be on your guard.

  73. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.

  74. On account of me, you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them,

  75. and the gospel must first be preached to all nations.

  76. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say.

  77. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

  78. Brother will betray brother to death and father his child.

  79. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

  80. Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

  81. When you see the abomination that causes desolation standing where it does not belong, let the reader understand.

  82. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

  83. Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out of it.

  84. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.

  85. Look how dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

  86. Pray that this will not take place in winter because those will be days of distress,

  87. unequaled from the beginning when God created the world until now and never to be equaled again.

  88. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive,

  89. but for the sake of the elect whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.

  90. At that time, if anyone says to you, look, here is the Messiah, or look, there he is, do not believe it.

  91. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive,

  92. if possible, even the elect.

  93. So be on your guard. I have told you everything ahead of time.

  94. But in those days, following that distress, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light.

  95. The stars will fall from the sky and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

  96. At that time, people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory,

  97. and he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds,

  98. from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

  99. Now learn this lesson from the fig tree.

  100. As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

  101. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near right at the door.

  102. Truly, I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

  103. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

  104. But about that day or hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

  105. Be on guard. Be alert. You do not know when that time will come.

  106. It's like a man going away.

  107. He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task,

  108. and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

  109. Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back,

  110. whether in the evening or at midnight or when the rooster crows or at dawn.

  111. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.

  112. What I say to you, I say to everyone, watch.

  113. This is the gospel of our Lord.

  114. Praise to you, O Christ.

  115. You can take your seats.

  116. Let's pray.

  117. Let's pray.

  118. Lord God, this passage is a hard one, but we confess that your word is true,

  119. and that your word is good, and that your word is life.

  120. So would your Holy Spirit guide us this morning, not just to understand your word,

  121. but to trust it and to live by it?

  122. For Jesus' sake and for the world, we pray.

  123. Amen.

  124. All right, so let's just dive right in.

  125. You need a little bit of a helpful background as we get into Mark chapter 13,

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  126. and what you have to remember is that what happens in chapter 11?

  127. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  128. He enters the temple, and then what does he do?

  129. He clears it out, right?

  130. He clears it out.

  131. He calls it a den of robbers.

  132. He creates quite a stir.

  133. He overturns the money changers' tables, and he drives out all the buyers and sellers.

  134. And then from then on in chapter 12, you have a bunch of religious leaders who come to question

  135. him and test him and challenge his authority in and around the temple.

  136. So you might say that coming into chapter 13 here, the temple had become a hostile place

  137. to Jesus.

  138. And you might even say that one key to understanding Jesus' whole teaching in Mark chapter 13 is

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  139. to understand that he has come to make that temple obsolete and to challenge people to

  140. place their hopes somewhere else and not in that temple.

  141. So now we come to chapter 13, verse 1, and it says, as Jesus was leaving the temple, again,

  142. this place had been so hostile to Jesus, and that in many ways Jesus had just undermined

  143. and discredited as Jesus was leaving this temple, one of his disciples, totally missing the point

  144. of all that's just been happening at the temple, one of his disciples says to him, look, teacher,

  145. what massive stones, what magnificent buildings.

  146. And he might as well have said, teacher, what a beautiful temple.

  147. Aren't we so lucky to call this temple ours, to be Jewish worshipers at this most magnificent

  148. house of worship?

  149. How befitting it is that we, who have the greatest religion and culture in the world, also have

  150. the greatest temple in the world.

  151. I mean, look at those stones, look at these magnificent buildings.

  152. And for sure, these were massive stones.

  153. Think like shipping cargo containers, all right, 400 tons each, beautifully stacked on one another.

  154. And for sure, the building was magnificent.

  155. King Herod and Jewish people from all over the world had put tons of money into this reconstruction

  156. of a temple.

  157. Its foundation was twice as big as the original temple that Solomon had built.

  158. And as the ancient historian Josephus recounts, it was covered all over with plates of gold

  159. of great weight.

  160. And at the first rising of the sun, it reflected back a very fiery splendor and made those who

  161. forced themselves to look upon it to turn their eyes away, just as they would have done

  162. at the sun's own rays.

  163. So in one sense, the disciples, that disciple wasn't wrong.

  164. This was an impressive sight to behold, probably the greatest house of worship in the known world.

  165. But is Jesus as impressed by this temple as his disciple?

  166. No.

  167. No, because he, like the prophet he is, he sees the temple for what it really is and what

  168. it will ultimately be, a mere architectural structure, merely built by deep pockets and

  169. a vain king, King Herod.

  170. Just a place ruled by a Jewish religious establishment whose hearts were far from the Lord and a house

  171. of worship filled with religious people who couldn't even recognize the Messiah right in

  172. front of them.

  173. That's what the temple was to Jesus.

  174. And so Jesus saw in this temple something ultimately doomed to crumble into a pile of rubble.

  175. In fact, the whole reason Jesus came, we know, from the other parts of the Scriptures was

  176. to be a better, more ultimate temple, right?

  177. The perfect place where the fullness of God dwelt.

  178. The perfect and true meeting place between God and humanity.

  179. Not centralized in one little place in Jerusalem, waiting for people to come and convert to join

  180. him, but a person who by his spirit would go out with his disciples to the world.

  181. And so he responds in verse 2.

  182. He says,

  183. Do you see all these great buildings?

  184. Not one stone here will be left on another.

  185. Every one will be thrown down.

  186. And you have to understand how rattling this would have been to his disciples to hear this.

  187. Because to the Jewish people, the temple was the centralized dwelling place of God, the

  188. very heart of the kingdom, the core of God's holy city.

  189. The temple was the religious, political, and cultural center of Jewish life.

  190. It was the place from which God was going to establish his rule and reign over all the

  191. nations and vindicate his own honor and his people's honor.

  192. And remember, this is the second temple, okay?

  193. So it's not Solomon's original temple.

  194. This is the temple that was built after the Israelites had been returned to Israel after

  195. their exile in Babylon.

  196. So it's not just the central place of God's presence, but it's a sign, right?

  197. It's a sign of God's favor.

  198. It's a sign of God's commitment to them that he would indeed keep his promise to them of

  199. an everlasting kingdom in the line of David.

  200. And now here the disciples were.

  201. They'd believe they'd identified the Messiah as Jesus of Nazareth, right?

  202. And they believed that the everlasting kingdom was soon to be inaugurated and that such a

  203. grand temple was well-suited for such a long-waited Messiah.

  204. But then Jesus tells them that not one stone of it will be left on another.

  205. Jesus prophesies that this site that's so central to all of Jewish life and carrying all their

  206. hopes and dreams, this architectural structure that had been in construction for over 50 years

  207. up to this point when they're pointing out these stones.

  208. And it wouldn't be completed for another 30 years.

  209. Jesus is saying, it's all going to come crashing down.

  210. And so in verse 3 and 4, four of the disciples approach Jesus because they absolutely need

  211. to know more details.

  212. And they ask him in verse 4, actually they don't ask him, they command him, tell us, when

  213. will these things happen?

  214. Specifically, when will the temple be destroyed?

  215. And they ask, and what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?

  216. All right, and these are some super loaded questions.

  217. Because see, in the disciples' minds, yes, their question is about the end of the temple,

  218. but as Jewish students of the scriptures, in their minds, the end of the temple was also

  219. the same thing as the end of the world.

  220. Remember, the temple was a central feature in their world, so for the temple to be destroyed,

  221. for the dwelling place of God and his people to be torn down, that would signal the end of

  222. the world.

  223. And not only that, but notice how they phrased their second question, what will be the sign

  224. that they are all about to be fulfilled?

  225. There's this prophecy in the book of Daniel, Daniel chapter 12, and it's about the end of

    Daniel 12 chapter mention

  226. the world.

  227. And Daniel has this vision of a man asking a very similar question, and this man asks,

  228. how long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?

  229. And then Daniel hears the answer.

  230. Another man cries out, it will be for a time, listen, when the power of the holy people has

  231. finally been broken.

  232. All these things will be completed.

  233. When the power of the holy people has finally been broken, all these things will be completed.

  234. So in short, the disciples understand Jesus' prophecy about the temple to be more than a prediction

  235. about some building, they understand it to be a prophecy about the last days.

  236. And that's why the disciples don't just ask, when will this happen?

  237. When will the temple be destroyed?

  238. But when will these things, plural, happen?

  239. What will be the sign that they will all be fulfilled?

  240. They have a lot of things in mind when they're thinking about the destruction of the temple.

  241. And it's even clearer if you look on page 805 in your pew Bibles, if you'd like,

  242. in Matthew's account of this discussion.

  243. Matthew chapter 24, verse 3.

    Matthew 24:3

  244. In Matthew's more expanded account, he puts it like this when they ask the question,

  245. when will this happen?

  246. And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?

  247. So that's what's on their mind when they're asking this question.

  248. And that's where the difficulty of this passage really comes in.

  249. It's in how to understand Jesus' response to this loaded question.

  250. When Jesus responds to their questions with a list of a whole bunch of things that will happen,

  251. the question is, when did or when does that actually happen?

  252. Like what time period was he referring to?

  253. Especially since we know that the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.

  254. And you know what?

  255. First, I was going to share with you the view that I felt most comfortable with.

  256. But then yesterday morning, I listened to one more talk about this chapter.

  257. And it was with a different view.

  258. And I was like, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.

  259. I'm not quite sure.

  260. And so I spent yesterday afternoon trying to figure out how to concisely summarize

  261. maybe three of the most popular views for you.

  262. But then I realized that it was going to take way too much time

  263. and distract us from what I think Jesus is most importantly wanting us to have our attention focused upon.

  264. So all I'm going to say, and we can talk about this offline,

  265. come to my equipping class the last Tuesday of every month.

  266. We can talk about that more.

  267. But all I'm going to say is that some people,

  268. some people think that what is predicted from verses 5 to 31,

  269. all right, again, tops of heads, tops of heads, verses 5 to 31.

  270. Some people think that all that's predicted there,

  271. about all the wars and the earthquakes and the famines and persecution and false prophets

  272. and the gospel being preached to all the nations

  273. and the tribulation and the abomination that causes desolation,

  274. leading people to flee to the mountains,

  275. and the destruction of the temple and the sun and the moon,

  276. darkening stars falling from the sky,

  277. the son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory,

  278. and the angels gathering all God's people from the ends of the earth,

  279. and this whole generation not passing away before all these things happen.

  280. Some people think that this is all in the future.

  281. You might call that the futurist view or the dispensationalist view,

  282. particularly conservative American evangelicals,

  283. Moody Bible Institute, Dallas Theological Seminary,

  284. guys like Billy Graham, Chuck Swindoll, John MacArthur, Charles Stanley, Tony Evans.

  285. You may have heard of Hal Lindsey, right?

  286. And those famous New York Times best-selling books,

  287. the Left Behind series, Tim LaHaye, that's this view, right?

  288. And while I probably would consider myself a theologically conservative American evangelical,

  289. while I also grew up being taught this view,

  290. today I would say I actually find this the least compelling, the least compelling view.

  291. Because the temple was destroyed,

  292. and a lot of this stuff already did happen by 70 A.D.

  293. And Jesus says in verse 30 that the generation that he's speaking to

  294. would not pass away until all these things happened.

  295. And some people think, well, maybe he's talking about generations upon generations,

  296. not just, you know, beyond the time of Jesus' disciples,

  297. but the best Greek and New Testament scholars feel that that's kind of a dishonest reading,

  298. a twisting of the word generation, beyond how the word generation is used in the rest of the Bible

  299. and in the rest of classic Greek literature.

  300. So it seems to me that you have to at least admit that a lot of this stuff has already happened

  301. by 70 A.D. at the destruction of the temple.

  302. Now there's another camp, they're called the Preterist Camp.

  303. I wasn't going to say that, but Jonathan dared me to use that word in this sermon, all right?

  304. But they think that all these things mentioned in verses 5 through 31,

  305. that they already happened by 70 A.D., by the time the temple was destroyed.

  306. Even the coming of the Son of Man in the clouds with great power and glory

  307. and his gathering of all people from the four winds.

  308. And honestly, as I studied this passage this week,

  309. I actually became a lot more sympathetic to this view

  310. for a variety of reasons I can share with you later.

  311. The top commentator on the Gospel of Mark, his name was Richard France.

  312. He was a scholar out at Oxford.

  313. He held this view.

  314. So does N.T. Wright, R.C. Sproul, Kevin DeYoung.

  315. But that part about the Son of Man already coming,

  316. even if we take that spiritually and figuratively

  317. and believe in another physical coming of Jesus,

  318. it doesn't sit right with me.

  319. I think it takes kind of some gymnastics to hold this view as well.

  320. And then there was the view that I was taught in seminary

  321. that some of these things did happen leading up to the destruction of the temple,

  322. but other things, like the Son of Man returning, hasn't happened yet.

  323. That's the view I was probably going to teach and promote,

  324. but honestly, I'm not really sure that one's right either.

  325. I think it takes maybe a less intuitive kind of lumpy,

  326. back-and-forth reading of this text.

  327. All right, so that's the end of the sermon.

  328. No, but I think from time to time you need to hear

  329. that the pastor doesn't know.

  330. And that's the truth.

  331. That's God's word to you this morning.

  332. The pastors don't know everything.

  333. And this was just a brief and broad sketch

  334. of some of the most popular views out there,

  335. but again, I guess what I need to admit here is,

  336. as your pastor, I'm not really sure exactly

  337. what Jesus was referring to here in Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  338. But also as your pastor, I want you to hear

  339. that that doesn't mean what Jesus is saying here isn't important,

  340. or that we can just ignore his teaching about the end of the age,

  341. or that there is nothing we can hold onto and glean

  342. from these portions of Scripture

  343. that are more difficult to interpret and get consensus upon.

  344. Actually, in this very difficult passage about the last days,

  345. there is still a ton of relevant, significant,

  346. and even profound truth here

  347. for us to trust and apply in our lives.

  348. The end times aren't some speculative Christian teachings

  349. that Christians are meant to bicker over

  350. or raise alarm about to manipulate people.

  351. Jesus' teaching on the end

  352. has incredible significance for the present.

  353. And if you're here today

  354. and you're having trouble seeing the relevance

  355. of this apocalyptic end-of-the-age conversation

  356. between Jesus and his disciples,

  357. maybe you're here,

  358. you're not even sure if you believe in God.

  359. And maybe you're not even sure you can believe

  360. there was a beginning or that there will be an end,

  361. even if the AI robots take over and wipe us out,

  362. or we wipe ourselves out with wars and nukes

  363. and consuming so much that we make this world uninhabitable.

  364. Or maybe you're here and you are a Christian

  365. and you do technically believe

  366. that there's a beginning and an end,

  367. but honestly, you have trouble thinking that far ahead.

  368. You're just trying to keep your head above the water, right?

  369. And the end of the age just seems so far,

  370. so distant that functionally,

  371. it seems just as irrelevant to you

  372. as to those here who aren't even sure they believe in God.

  373. Well, I'm sorry, I don't have time

  374. to give a comprehensive argument

  375. about why you should believe in the end of the age,

  376. but what I will say is that if we try to live

  377. as if there is no grand story,

  378. if we try to live as if there is no meta-narrative,

  379. no rightful ending,

  380. no one in control of the beginning or the middle

  381. or the end of the story,

  382. we will never live with a kind of confident hope,

  383. comforting peace, and convicted purpose

  384. that we all long to live with.

  385. See, underlying the entire Christian faith

  386. is the conviction that we are living in God's story,

  387. a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end,

  388. a good creation, a world gone wrong,

  389. and God's redemptive action to judge the world

  390. and yet at the same time save it

  391. and transfigure it into something glorious and imperishable.

  392. But without a grand narrative like the Christian narrative,

  393. if we don't have a good beginning,

  394. and if we're confused or divided

  395. about how to understand the messy middle

  396. that we all find ourselves in,

  397. and if we don't know the end

  398. or if there even is an end,

  399. and whether or not it bends toward justice

  400. like Dr. King used to preach

  401. from his own Christian convictions,

  402. then it's gonna be hard to live this life

  403. with hope for the future,

  404. peace in the present,

  405. and convictions about the way

  406. things were always meant to be

  407. from the beginning.

  408. So what I hope to show you from this passage

  409. is more than just the details

  410. about the end of the ages

  411. that the Bible interpreters

  412. disagree with each other about.

  413. What I hope to show you

  414. and what is clear from this passage

  415. is that it's only when we entrust ourselves

  416. to the end of God's story

  417. that we'll ever live with confident hope,

  418. comforting, peace,

  419. and convicted purpose.

  420. It's only when we entrust ourselves

  421. to the end of God's story

  422. that we'll ever live with confident hope,

  423. comforting, peace,

  424. and convicted purpose.

  425. I think that's what Jesus most importantly

  426. was trying to get across

  427. to his disciples

  428. who were asking him

  429. about the destruction of the temple

  430. and the end of the world,

  431. and I think that's what he wants

  432. for us this morning too.

  433. Now notice how I phrased this

  434. kind of main point that I just spoke.

  435. I didn't say when we know the details

  436. of the end of God's story.

  437. I said when we entrust ourselves

  438. to the end of God's story.

  439. And that's absolutely key

  440. to understanding this most important thrust

  441. in Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  442. Rather than focusing on all the details

  443. and the events that Jesus speaks about

  444. and rather than trying to predict

  445. the future and the exact time

  446. when the end will come,

  447. which Jesus says in verse 32,

  448. even he doesn't know,

  449. a better way to read and understand

  450. Mark chapter 13

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  451. is by focusing on Jesus' clear

  452. and direct commands and promises, I think.

  453. To focus on the when, I think,

  454. is not the point

  455. or not the main point.

  456. And in fact, it shows that

  457. we are totally missing the heart

  458. and the mind

  459. and the person of Jesus.

  460. I want you to notice something here.

  461. So this isn't the first time, right,

  462. that Jesus has prophesied

  463. about the future to his disciples.

  464. He's prophesied many times.

  465. We've seen him many times

  466. constantly foretelling them

  467. of his suffering, right,

  468. and of his death.

  469. And yet this is the first time

  470. when they're actually curious enough

  471. to ask him when.

  472. When this prophecy would be fulfilled,

  473. when it would happen.

  474. Not when it's about his destruction,

  475. but when it's about

  476. their beloved temple's destruction.

  477. And this should show us

  478. not only how much Jesus' disciples

  479. were totally missing the point

  480. and how far their hearts were from him,

  481. but it's a mirror for us, too,

  482. to consider the ways

  483. that we might be missing the point

  484. and ultimately missing Jesus.

  485. This is an opportunity

  486. to consider the areas

  487. where our hearts

  488. might be less concerned about Jesus

  489. and more concerned about things

  490. like the temple

  491. that won't last.

  492. What are the things

  493. that we think

  494. are more important

  495. than they actually are

  496. to Jesus?

  497. Notice also how the disciples ask,

  498. they ask when,

  499. but they don't ask why,

  500. or how do you want us

  501. to live and respond?

  502. They were more concerned

  503. with the bare facts

  504. and the circumstances

  505. around them

  506. than God's purposes around them.

  507. More concerned with factual knowing

  508. than with faithful living.

  509. And the application question for us is,

  510. do we also care more

  511. about our circumstances

  512. than God's purpose for our lives?

  513. Are we more concerned

  514. with predicting the future

  515. and setting ourselves up

  516. for favorable circumstances

  517. than we are

  518. with a personal relationship with God

  519. and living into his purposes?

  520. The disciples totally missed the point.

  521. And we will too

  522. if we only see Jesus' response

  523. as an answer to their

  524. when will this happen question.

  525. Jesus isn't interested

  526. in just simply answering

  527. their question

  528. and puffing them up

  529. with knowledge

  530. about the details

  531. of their future circumstances.

  532. No, he is far more interested

  533. as we will see

  534. in how they will live faithfully

  535. into and toward the future

  536. as his disciples

  537. even without knowing

  538. the exact timing of the end.

  539. I love how this commentator,

  540. he was formerly the president

  541. at Baylor,

  542. David Garland,

  543. he puts it this way

  544. in his commentary

  545. on this passage.

  546. He says,

  547. Mark's message

  548. is more subtle

  549. than to give us events

  550. to enter onto our

  551. end of time charts.

  552. The message is simply this.

  553. God's way,

  554. God's Christ,

  555. and God's people

  556. will be vindicated

  557. in a conclusive manner

  558. that all will recognize.

  559. That time is not yet.

  560. The disciple is not called

  561. to eliminate his ignorance

  562. of the timing of the end.

  563. He is called to cope with it

  564. and respond to it appropriately.

  565. The question the text addresses

  566. is how does one live

  567. in difficult times?

  568. The end times drama

  569. will run its course

  570. scene by scene,

  571. but the actors on the stage

  572. have only vague clues

  573. about where they are

  574. precisely in the play.

  575. Only the stage director knows.

  576. He has given the actors

  577. instructions about what to do

  578. and what to say

  579. when they see certain things happen,

  580. but that is it.

  581. They know how the play ends,

  582. but they do not know

  583. when the curtain will fall.

  584. And I would add,

  585. they don't need to know.

  586. They don't need to know

  587. when the curtain will fall.

  588. They need to know

  589. the father,

  590. the play director.

  591. Now, I don't have that much time left,

  592. but I do want to draw your attention

  593. to what I believe

  594. were the most important things

  595. Jesus wanted to get across

  596. to his disciples,

  597. far more important

  598. than accurately timing

  599. and predicting the future.

  600. I want to draw your attention

  601. to three commands

  602. and a promise.

  603. Three commands and a promise.

  604. So first, notice the first thing

  605. Jesus says in verse five.

  606. He actually doesn't direct,

  607. he doesn't directly answer

  608. their question,

  609. their when will this happen question,

  610. but he gives them a command instead.

  611. They ask him,

  612. when's this going to happen?

  613. And what does he say?

  614. He says,

  615. watch out

  616. that no one deceives you.

  617. Many will come in my name

  618. claiming I am he

  619. and will deceive many.

  620. Jesus' first response

  621. is not to answer their question

  622. and tell them

  623. when these things will happen,

  624. like when the temple

  625. will be destroyed

  626. and when he will return

  627. at the end of the age,

  628. but his main concern

  629. is that they watch out,

  630. hold steadfast to him

  631. and not be deceived

  632. by fake Messiah figures

  633. who will claim to solve

  634. all the world's problems

  635. if people would just trust

  636. and hope in them.

  637. And this isn't just because

  638. he wants them to just know

  639. the right things,

  640. know the right facts

  641. from the wrong ones,

  642. but it's because he wants them

  643. to know him.

  644. He wants them to trust him.

  645. The more important thing to Jesus

  646. is his relationship

  647. with his disciples.

  648. That they don't fall away

  649. after false messiahs

  650. who do not love them

  651. and cannot save them,

  652. no matter how powerful,

  653. no matter how charming,

  654. beautiful, impressive,

  655. and promising,

  656. they seem to be

  657. just like Herod's

  658. shiny temple was.

  659. They too will fall.

  660. They too will crumble.

  661. So that's the first command.

  662. Watch out

  663. and do not be deceived.

  664. It's a command

  665. to hold fast to Jesus

  666. and not go after false messiahs.

  667. It's relevant to them.

  668. It's relevant to us.

  669. Another command Jesus gives

  670. is a word of preparation

  671. and peace in verse 7.

  672. Do not be alarmed.

  673. Notice even when Jesus

  674. begins to approach

  675. this topic of when

  676. in verse 7,

  677. when you hear of wars

  678. and rumors of wars,

  679. do not be alarmed.

  680. Such things must happen,

  681. but the end is still to come.

  682. Notice he's not saying

  683. certain wars.

  684. Look out for this special war

  685. in Iran,

  686. in Iraq,

  687. in Palestine.

  688. That's going to be the one

  689. that's going to finally signal

  690. the end to come.

  691. He's just saying that wars

  692. will definitely come.

  693. There will be wars

  694. on the way toward the end

  695. and they shouldn't alarm us

  696. or turn us into

  697. alarmist future predictors.

  698. They simply will happen,

  699. but he says,

  700. they're not the end.

  701. The end, he says,

  702. is still to come.

  703. It's still to come,

  704. verse 7.

  705. Verse 8,

  706. nation will rise against nation

  707. and kingdom against kingdom.

  708. There will be earthquakes

  709. in various places

  710. and famines,

  711. but Jesus says,

  712. these are just the beginning

  713. of birth pains.

  714. Meaning,

  715. meaning that yes,

  716. these indicate that

  717. we are in the last days,

  718. but these are just

  719. the beginning

  720. of the last days

  721. and signs at the end

  722. will eventually come,

  723. even though

  724. we don't know

  725. the exact time.

  726. We can't know.

  727. Just as a mother

  728. having her initial contractions

  729. knows the baby is coming

  730. and even soon,

  731. but does not know

  732. the exact time

  733. and hour

  734. that the baby will come,

  735. whether in half an hour,

  736. or in 24 hours,

  737. he's telling them

  738. what to expect

  739. and reminding them

  740. that none of these hard things

  741. is the end of the world.

  742. Do not be alarmed,

  743. but in fact,

  744. these things,

  745. these hard things

  746. are the very way

  747. of Jesus himself.

  748. More than predicting,

  749. more important

  750. than predicting the future,

  751. what he's doing

  752. is he's preparing them

  753. for a life

  754. of faithfully following

  755. in his footsteps.

  756. Notice all these details.

  757. Verse 6,

  758. deceivers,

  759. false teachers,

  760. verse 7,

  761. wars,

  762. rumors of wars,

  763. verse 8,

  764. national and kingdom hostilities,

  765. earthquakes,

  766. famines,

  767. verse 9,

  768. disciples handed over

  769. to local councils,

  770. flogged in synagogues,

  771. standing before governors

  772. and kings,

  773. verse 11,

  774. arrested and put on trial,

  775. verse 12,

  776. families divided,

  777. verse 13,

  778. hatred from the world.

  779. These are all things

  780. that in many ways

  781. could very much describe

  782. Jesus' human experience,

  783. can't they?

  784. So when he says,

  785. do not be alarmed,

  786. he's telling them

  787. that yes,

  788. hard times will come,

  789. but you don't need

  790. to be alarmed.

  791. No,

  792. you're simply following

  793. in the way of your Lord,

  794. a road that involves suffering,

  795. but that ends in glories.

  796. He's telling them

  797. that their stories

  798. are being written

  799. exactly how Jesus' story

  800. was written,

  801. and that that's an honor

  802. and a privilege,

  803. and that is exactly

  804. how God intended

  805. to write their stories

  806. with a guarantee

  807. of a better ending

  808. to come.

  809. Do not be alarmed,

  810. he commands them.

  811. The last command

  812. I want to draw

  813. your attention to

  814. is toward the end

  815. of the passage

  816. in verse 32.

  817. It's in verses 32 to 37.

  818. It's a couple commands,

  819. but I want to clump them together.

  820. Be on guard,

  821. he says.

  822. Be alert,

  823. he says.

  824. Stay awake,

  825. keep watch,

  826. Jesus says.

  827. And he gives this illustration

  828. of servants not knowing

  829. when their master

  830. will come home.

  831. Now I know that this

  832. can sound pretty scary,

  833. like a terrible way

  834. to end this teaching,

  835. right?

  836. And when we read this,

  837. you know,

  838. I think a lot of us

  839. can think,

  840. like, wait,

  841. do I have to be perfect

  842. all the time

  843. with every second

  844. of my existence?

  845. Am I supposed to live

  846. with a kind of anxiety

  847. like Jesus could return

  848. at any second

  849. and be like,

  850. boo,

  851. I caught you.

  852. I caught you

  853. not being faithful.

  854. Is this saying

  855. that I better stay awake

  856. and be on edge

  857. all the time?

  858. Even be afraid

  859. of Jesus' return?

  860. You know,

  861. for most of my life,

  862. that's how I read

  863. this passage.

  864. And I said,

  865. how is this good news?

  866. When I gave some deeper thought

  867. to this illustration

  868. that Jesus gives,

  869. I began to wonder

  870. if it was actually

  871. less about being on edge

  872. and fearful

  873. of the master

  874. who could arrive

  875. at any moment

  876. and more about understanding,

  877. appreciating,

  878. believing in,

  879. and taking pride

  880. in the good job

  881. and role

  882. that I've been

  883. graciously assigned

  884. by my all-wise,

  885. all-loving master,

  886. a master who I definitely

  887. want to be serving

  888. in the first place.

  889. Like, think of it that way.

  890. Jesus is not saying,

  891. be on edge

  892. because you never know

  893. when I might peekaboo.

  894. No.

  895. He's saying,

  896. be vigilant.

  897. Stay on task.

  898. Do not grow weary

  899. in doing good.

  900. Do not grow weary

  901. or lazy

  902. or do not get distracted

  903. from the good mission

  904. and purpose

  905. that God has called you to,

  906. even if you don't know

  907. how long you'll be

  908. on this mission.

  909. Even if you don't know

  910. when the curtain's

  911. gonna fall,

  912. play your role,

  913. play your part

  914. and enjoy it.

  915. Jesus is calling us

  916. to keep living

  917. in light of the end,

  918. to stay awake,

  919. to have our eyes open

  920. and attentive

  921. to his story

  922. and how it ends.

  923. Even when we don't know

  924. the time,

  925. the end will come.

  926. Those are the three commands.

  927. Now let's end

  928. with this last,

  929. with the promise,

  930. right?

  931. Because I'm probably

  932. over time

  933. but know this,

  934. Jesus doesn't just

  935. give us commands,

  936. he gives us promises.

  937. He gives us promises

  938. to sustain and inspire

  939. our obedience

  940. to his commands

  941. and if I had time,

  942. I'd give you like

  943. three more,

  944. like verse 13,

  945. the promise that

  946. those who stand firm

  947. will be saved

  948. no matter what

  949. they go through,

  950. salvation's coming

  951. for those who stand firm

  952. in Christ

  953. or verse 26,

  954. the promise that

  955. regardless of how we

  956. interpret the events

  957. discussed here,

  958. the Son of Man

  959. will come in glory

  960. and power.

  961. That's something

  962. everyone agrees upon.

  963. There's a glorious end

  964. to the story

  965. and Jesus wins

  966. or this other promise

  967. in verse 31,

  968. heaven and earth

  969. will pass away

  970. but Jesus' words

  971. will never pass away

  972. that all that Jesus

  973. has ever said

  974. is true

  975. or will come true

  976. and we can bet

  977. our lives on it

  978. with even more confidence

  979. than we have

  980. that the sun

  981. will rise tomorrow

  982. or that the earth

  983. will continue

  984. to spin in orbit.

  985. I'd love to say more

  986. about all these promises

  987. but I want to pick

  988. one in particular,

  989. the promise in verse 10,

  990. the promise that

  991. the gospel

  992. must first be preached

  993. to all nations

  994. and I want to get

  995. your attention

  996. on this promise

  997. because I think

  998. it illustrates the point

  999. that I'm making

  1000. all along

1001. in this chapter of Mark

  1002. that we miss out

  1003. on so much

1004. if we read Mark 13

  1005. as just a puzzle

1006. to try to figure out

  1007. the details

  1008. and the timing

  1009. of the last days.

  1010. You know,

  1011. for so many years

  1012. reading the Bible,

  1013. I always just read

  1014. verse 10

  1015. as a mere sign,

  1016. as a mere marker

  1017. of when the world

  1018. would end,

  1019. of when the end

  1020. would come

  1021. and I've seen

  1022. so many like missionaries

  1023. and mission agencies

  1024. base their whole strategy

  1025. off of this, right?

1026. Try to reach this nation

  1027. and that nation

  1028. so Jesus can finally

  1029. come back, right?

  1030. But revisiting this text

  1031. this week

  1032. opened my eyes

  1033. to the better emphasis

  1034. that I think

  1035. that Jesus had

  1036. on his heart.

  1037. See, verse 10

  1038. isn't simply a marker

  1039. in time for us

1040. to look at our maps

  1041. and say,

  1042. okay, how many more

  1043. people groups

  1044. does the gospel

  1045. need to go to

  1046. and how long

  1047. will that take

  1048. so we can predict

  1049. the day when Jesus

  1050. will come back?

  1051. No.

  1052. Verse 10

  1053. is Jesus' promise

  1054. that no matter

  1055. what tribulation

  1056. may come

  1057. that his disciples

  1058. will always have

  1059. good news

  1060. to hope in

  1061. and to share

  1062. with the world

  1063. because his good news

  1064. will never fail

  1065. to be good news

  1066. worth believing in

  1067. and living by

  1068. and sharing.

  1069. And so verse 10

  1070. is Jesus' insistence

  1071. to his disciples

  1072. in these last days

  1073. that the most important

  1074. thing

  1075. is the preaching

  1076. of the gospel,

  1077. the preaching

  1078. of the good news

  1079. about Jesus.

  1080. It's a promise

  1081. that his disciples

  1082. filled and empowered

  1083. by the Holy Spirit

1084. will not fail this task

1085. but will be incredibly successful

  1086. even in spite

  1087. of tribulation.

  1088. He was saying

  1089. just as certainly

  1090. as the world

  1091. will seem like

  1092. it's falling apart

  1093. and just as surely

1094. as you will be arrested

  1095. and flogged

  1096. and hated

  1097. just like me,

  1098. just as surely

  1099. Jesus says

  1100. will the good news

  1101. still find its way

  1102. to the world

  1103. from Jerusalem

  1104. to Samaria

  1105. to the ends

  1106. of the earth

  1107. all throughout

  1108. the Roman Empire

  1109. and beyond.

  1110. And just like

  1111. the suffering

  1112. of the cross

  1113. could not hold me

  1114. down in the grave

  1115. nothing,

  1116. nothing

1117. is going to be able

  1118. to sour

  1119. or stop

  1120. the good news

  1121. about me

  1122. and my kingdom.

1123. And that is his promise

  1124. to the church.

  1125. This was to be

  1126. the disciples'

  1127. heartbeat

  1128. after Jesus'

  1129. resurrection

  1130. and ascension

  1131. into heaven

1132. and this is to be

  1133. our heartbeat

  1134. as well,

  1135. Christ's church

  1136. as we await

  1137. Jesus' return

  1138. in the last days

  1139. of history.

  1140. No matter

  1141. how many millennia

  1142. these last days

  1143. will last,

  1144. no matter what

  1145. kinds of difficulties

  1146. we face,

  1147. no matter who wins

  1148. the 2024 elections,

  1149. it's not the end

  1150. of the world

  1151. until Jesus says so

  1152. and we will always

  1153. have good news

  1154. because while kingdoms

  1155. may rise and fall

  1156. and even the greatest

  1157. temples in the world

1158. and even while the Messiah

  1159. himself might be slain,

  1160. he is risen

  1161. and he is returning

1162. and this is good news

  1163. for us,

  1164. it's good news

  1165. for the nations,

  1166. the good news

  1167. that the greater temple

  1168. who was torn down

  1169. yet raised

  1170. in three days

1171. to pay for our sins

  1172. and bring resurrection life

  1173. into this world,

  1174. this is the gospel,

  1175. the gospel of Jesus

1176. and this gospel of Jesus

1177. is the only possible source

  1178. of confident hope,

  1179. comforting peace

  1180. and convicted purpose.

  1181. So Christchurch,

  1182. is that what we're

  1183. going to be about?

  1184. Proclaiming the gospel

  1185. to all the nations,

1186. is it a must to us

1187. as it was for Jesus

  1188. and for his disciples?

  1189. The gospel must first

  1190. be preached

  1191. to all the nations

  1192. because if it's true,

1193. how could it not be?

1194. How could it not be

  1195. a must to us?

  1196. Christ has died,

  1197. Christ has risen

1198. and Christ will come again.

  1199. Let's pray.

  1200. Lord, I thank you

1201. for my brothers and sisters

  1202. in this room

  1203. who endured

  1204. a longer sermon

  1205. than normal

  1206. but I pray

1207. that they will come away

  1208. with that confident hope,

  1209. that comforting peace

  1210. and that convicted purpose

  1211. that you desire

  1212. for all those

  1213. who would entrust themselves

  1214. to your story

1215. as the perfect story writer

  1216. who's shown us

  1217. the way in Jesus.

1218. In his name we pray.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.
