  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 4, verse 43 through chapter 5, verse 13,

    Luke 4:43

  6. chapter 5, verses 18 through 20, and verses 27 through 32 as printed in your liturgy.

  7. A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

  8. But he said,

  9. I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God in other towns also, because that is why I was sent.

  10. And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

  11. One day, as Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

  12. the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.

  13. He saw at the water's edge two boats left there by the fishermen who were washing their nets.

  14. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,

  15. and asked him to put out a little from shore.

  16. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

  17. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,

  18. put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch.

  19. Simon answered,

  20. Master, I've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything,

  21. but because you say so, I will let down the nets.

  22. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

  23. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them,

  24. and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

  25. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said,

  26. Go away from me, Lord, I am a sinful man.

  27. For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,

  28. and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners.

  29. Then Jesus said to Simon,

  30. Don't be afraid.

  31. From now on, you will fish for people.

  32. So they pulled their boats up on shore,

  33. left everything, and followed him.

  34. While Jesus was in one of the towns,

  35. a man came along who was covered with leprosy.

  36. When he saw Jesus,

  37. he fell with his face to the ground

  38. and begged him,

  39. Lord, if you are willing,

  40. you can make me clean.

  41. Jesus reached out his hand

  42. and touched the man.

  43. I am willing, he said.

  44. Be clean.

  45. And immediately the leprosy left him.

  46. Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat

  47. and tried to take him into the house

  48. to lay him before Jesus.

  49. When they could not find a way to do this

  50. because of the crowd,

  51. they went up on the roof

  52. and lowered him on his mat

  53. through the tiles into the middle of the crowd

  54. right in front of Jesus.

  55. So when Jesus saw their faith,

  56. he said,

  57. Friend, your sins are forgiven.

  58. After this,

  59. Jesus went out

  60. and saw a tax collector

  61. by the name of Levi

  62. sitting at his tax booth.

  63. Follow me, Jesus said to him.

  64. And Levi got up,

  65. left everything,

  66. and followed him.

  67. Then Levi held a great banquet

  68. for Jesus at his house,

  69. and a large crowd of tax collectors

  70. and others were eating with them.

  71. But the Pharisees

  72. and the teachers of the law

  73. who belonged to their sect

  74. complained to his disciples,

  75. Why do you eat and drink

  76. with tax collectors and sinners?

  77. Jesus answered them,

  78. It is not the healthy

  79. who need a doctor,

  80. but the sick.

  81. I have not come to call the righteous,

  82. but sinners to repentance.

  83. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  84. Praise to you, O Christ.

  85. Good morning, Christ Church.

  86. Is it warm enough in here?

  87. We turn the heat up a little bit.

  88. You good?

  89. All right.

  90. We are,

  91. we've been looking at the gospel of Luke,

  92. and we're here in the early days

  93. of the ministry of Jesus,

  94. and we're looking at

  95. some of the ways that Jesus calls

  96. his first disciples to come

  97. and follow him

  98. and to begin to participate

  99. in his mission.

  100. And Peter is,

  101. you know,

  102. the main person

  103. we're going to be talking about

  104. this morning.

  105. And Peter is a guy who,

  106. he met Jesus the way

  107. that most people do,

  108. which is that

  109. someone invited him.

  110. You know,

  111. someone brought him to Jesus.

  112. Peter would have never

  113. encountered Jesus

  114. had he not been brought

  115. by another person.

  116. We would have never

  117. heard of Peter

  118. unless his brother Andrew

  119. had met Jesus

  120. and begun to follow Jesus.

  121. And the very first thing

  122. that his brother Andrew does

  123. is he says,

  124. I'm going to go get Peter.

  125. And he gets Peter

  126. and he says,

  127. hey,

  128. we found,

  129. we found the Messiah.

  130. We found the Christ.

  131. You've got to come

  132. meet Jesus.

  133. And so that's kind of

  134. where our story

  135. picks up.

  136. Peter has,

  137. he's a guy who's,

  138. he's met

  139. Jesus,

  140. but he's never

  141. really experienced

  142. the power of Jesus.

  143. Peter,

  144. he's met Jesus,

  145. but he's not yet

  146. a follower

  147. who surrendered himself

  148. to Jesus.

  149. He's not yet a disciple

  150. or an apprentice

  151. who submitted himself

  152. to Jesus.

  153. And so we notice

  154. in the story

  155. that Jesus intentionally

  156. seeks Peter out.

  157. He deliberately steps

  158. into not just

  159. any old boat,

  160. but into Peter's boat.

  161. And why did he get

  162. into Peter's boat?

  163. Well,

  164. on one level,

  165. you know,

  166. the crowds are pressing in

  167. and Jesus figures

  168. he can more effectively

  169. preach the word of God

  170. and about the kingdom of God

  171. to all these people

  172. better from the boat.

  173. But on another level,

  174. why does he choose

  175. to get into Peter's boat?

  176. And I believe

  177. that this moment,

  178. like pretty much

  179. every moment

  180. in the ministry

  181. and the life of Jesus,

  182. it's not random.

  183. Right?

  184. It happens carefully

  185. and prayerfully

  186. because it's something

  187. Jesus planned to do.

  188. And the reason

  189. Jesus steps

  190. into Peter's boat

  191. is that

  192. Jesus is fishing

  193. for people.

  194. Right?

  195. Jesus wants to catch

  196. people

  197. and he's fishing

  198. for this particular

  199. fisherman

  200. named Peter.

  201. He sees this man

  202. who's not yet

  203. a disciple

  204. and he wants

  205. to catch him.

  206. He wants to gather him

  207. into his net.

  208. And how does Jesus

  209. do that?

  210. Well,

  211. it says in verse 2

  212. that he saw

  213. the water's edge

  214. two boats

  215. left there by the fishermen

  216. who were washing their nets

  217. and he got into

  218. one of the boats

  219. the one belonging

  220. to Simon Peter

  221. and he asked him

  222. to put out

  223. a little bit

  224. from shore.

  225. So Jesus just

  226. initiates

  227. this simple

  228. relationship,

  229. this simple

  230. conversation.

  231. Much like he did

  232. with that woman

  233. at the well

  234. in Samaria.

  235. He just said,

  236. hey, I'm thirsty.

  237. Can you give me

  238. a drink?

  239. You can imagine

  240. this conversation

  241. where Jesus

  242. has asked

  243. Peter for help

  244. and says,

  245. hey, Peter,

  246. I know you're

  247. doing your job.

  248. I know you're

  249. washing your nets.

  250. I know that we barely

  251. even know each other

  252. but would you mind

  253. helping me out?

  254. Would it be okay

  255. if I use your stuff?

  256. Would you mind

  257. if I borrow your boat?

  258. You mind pushing out

  259. a little bit

  260. from shore?

  261. And Jesus

  262. just simply begins

  263. to share his life

  264. with Peter

  265. and asks Peter

  266. to share his life

  267. with him.

  268. And Jesus

  269. puts himself

  270. interestingly

  271. in this non-religious

  272. space

  273. with this not-yet-disciple

  274. Peter

  275. and he steps

  276. into Peter's world

  277. and he gets on

  278. Peter's calendar

  279. and he gets involved

  280. in Peter's life

  281. and he asks Peter

  282. for help

  283. and he shares

  284. Peter's stuff

  285. and what happens

  286. as a result

  287. when Jesus

  288. just shares his life

  289. is amazing.

  290. And that's

  291. what we're going

  292. to look at

  293. in the next few minutes

  294. this incredible

  295. scene

  296. of Jesus

  297. and Peter's boat.

  298. And I want to look

  299. at it together

  300. under three headings.

  301. I want to think

  302. together about

  303. the challenge

  304. of Jesus

  305. and the transforming

  306. grace of Jesus

  307. and then the mission

  308. of Jesus.

  309. Okay?

  310. So the challenge

  311. of Jesus

  312. the transforming

  313. grace of Jesus

  314. and the mission

  315. of Jesus.

  316. So first of all

  317. let's think together

  318. about the challenge

  319. of Jesus

  320. that Peter gets.

  321. Peter

  322. finds himself

  323. involved

  324. in Jesus' work

  325. by letting him

  326. use his boat

  327. and now Jesus

  328. begins to involve

  329. himself in Peter's work

  330. by showing Peter

  331. how to fish.

  332. And it says

  333. in verse 4

  334. when Jesus

  335. had finished speaking

  336. he said to Simon

  337. Peter

  338. put out into deep water

  339. and let down the nets

  340. for a catch.

  341. Now you need to know

  342. that that is

  343. terrible fishing advice.

  344. Peter is tired.

  345. He's frustrated.

  346. He's been fishing

  347. all night long.

  348. He's caught

  349. nothing

  350. and he must

  351. have had

  352. some sort

  353. of visceral

  354. reaction

  355. to Jesus'

  356. words

  357. but you can

  358. kind of tell

  359. he's trying

  360. to hold it

  361. together

  362. and be

  363. respectful

  364. and diplomatic

  365. so Peter

  366. says to Jesus

  367. in verse 5

  368. Master

  369. we've worked

  370. hard all night

  371. and haven't

  372. caught

  373. anything.

  374. You see

  375. Jesus

  376. is not a fisherman.

  377. Jesus

  378. is a

  379. tectone.

  380. He's a builder.

  381. He's a stonemason

  382. and he's

  383. just a preacher.

  384. What does he know?

  385. But Peter

  386. spent his whole life

  387. fishing these waters.

  388. Peter

  389. like his father

  390. before him

  391. and his grandfather

  392. before him

  393. he knows

  394. how to fish

  395. and he's made

  396. a really good

  397. living

  398. at fishing

  399. and Peter

  400. knows

  401. that Jesus

  402. is giving him

  403. bad advice.

  404. Jesus

  405. is asking him

  406. to do something

  407. that's against

  408. his own instincts

  409. and his own

  410. experience

  411. and Jesus

  412. knows this too.

  413. Jesus

  414. knows

  415. what a high

  416. challenge

  417. this is going

  418. to be

  419. for Peter.

  420. Jesus

  421. actually knows

  422. right?

  423. He knows

  424. that the

  425. optimal time

  426. to go fishing

  427. is at night

  428. when the waters

  429. have cooled down

  430. and the fish

  431. have come up

  432. to the surface

  433. in the shallows

  434. and they can't

  435. see in the dark

  436. and you trap

  437. them in your nets

  438. that's how

  439. you're supposed

  440. to fish.

  441. And Jesus

  442. also knows

  443. that the most

  444. absurd time

  445. to go

  446. would be right

  447. now

  448. when the sun

  449. has come up

  450. and the waters

  451. heated up

  452. and the fish

  453. have gone

  454. deeper

  455. Jesus knows

  456. that this seems

  457. like terrible

  458. advice

  459. and that

  460. in the eyes

  461. of others

  462. Peter is going

  463. to look

  464. absolutely

  465. ridiculous

  466. and absurd.

  467. And by the way

  468. this is how

  469. pretty much

  470. most of the

  471. Christian life

  472. works.

  473. Jesus

  474. says hey

  475. I want you

  476. to trust me

  477. to go against

  478. conventional wisdom.

  479. Jesus says

  480. hey I want you

  481. to do things

  482. that viewed

  483. from the

  484. outside

  485. are going

  486. to look

  487. stupid.

  488. Stuff like

  489. being sacrificial

  490. with your power.

  491. Being self-giving

  492. with your time.

  493. Things like

  494. being generous

  495. with your money

  496. and disciplined

  497. with your sexuality.

  498. Things like

  499. having integrity

  500. at work

  501. and being faithful

  502. even when it

  503. hurts.

  504. Jesus tells us

  505. try it my way.

  506. Try it my way.

  507. And that's

  508. exactly what he's

  509. saying to Peter.

  510. Try it my way.

  511. Now how does

  512. Peter respond

  513. to Jesus

  514. challenge to

  515. trust him?

  516. Well it's

  517. incredible.

  518. He says in

  519. verse 5

  520. Master we

  521. worked hard

  522. all night

  523. we haven't

  524. caught anything

  525. but because

  526. you say so

  527. I will let

  528. down the

  529. nets.

  530. Other

  531. translations say

  532. but at

  533. your word.

  534. And Peter

  535. he's not

  536. thinking hey

  537. this is going

  538. to work out

  539. for me.

  540. He's not

  541. thinking you

  542. know this

  543. yeah this

  544. seems like a

  545. really good

  546. use of my

  547. time.

  548. He's not

  549. thinking you

  550. know what

  551. I'm going

  552. to get out

  553. of this

  554. is a really

  555. good story

  556. and it's

  557. really going

  558. to help

  559. my reputation.

  560. No he

  561. just says

  562. because you

  563. say so.

  564. Because you

  565. are trustworthy

  566. I'm going

  567. to trust you.

  568. the first

  569. step of

  570. following Jesus

  571. as a

  572. disciple

  573. begins for

  574. Peter by

  575. just hearing

  576. the word

  577. of God

  578. and then

  579. stepping out

  580. in faith

  581. on that

  582. word as

  583. if it's

  584. wiser

  585. than

  586. Peter's

  587. wisdom.

  588. And it's

  589. a critical

  590. moment for

  591. Peter right?

  592. It's a

  593. fateful

  594. decision.

  595. The reason

  596. we know

  597. Peter at

  598. all is

  599. because he

  600. responds

  601. because you

  602. say so

  603. at your

  604. word

  605. and he

  606. just acts

  607. on the

  608. word that

  609. he gets

  610. from the

  611. Lord.

  612. And it

  613. says in

  614. verse 6

  615. when they

  616. had done

  617. so they

  618. caught such

  619. a large

  620. number of

  621. fish that

  622. their nets

  623. began to

  624. break.

  625. So they

  626. signaled

  627. their partners

  628. in the

  629. other boat

  630. to come

  631. and help

  632. them and

  633. they came

  634. and filled

  635. both boats

  636. so full

  637. that they

  638. began to

  639. sink.

  640. And what

  641. that tells

  642. us is that

  643. it's good

  644. to trust

  645. Jesus.

  646. It's good

  647. to obey

  648. Jesus.

  649. This is

  650. the biggest

  651. catch of

  652. their lives.

  653. It's a

  654. massive

  655. haul of

  656. fish.

  657. It's the

  658. most success

  659. they've ever

  660. had in

  661. their careers.

  662. Their nets

  663. are breaking.

  664. Their boats

  665. are sinking.

  666. And they're

  667. thinking to

  668. themselves,

  669. they must be

  670. thinking to

  671. themselves,

  672. where did

  673. Jesus get

  674. this power

  675. and this

  676. authority?

  677. How does

  678. Jesus know

  679. better than

  680. Peter how

  681. Peter's life

  682. is supposed

  683. to go?

  684. And how

  685. is Jesus

  686. able to

  687. give us a

  688. more abundant

  689. and more

  690. fruitful life

  691. if we would

  692. just trust

  693. him and

  694. surrender to

  695. him and

  696. submit to

  697. him?

  698. And look

  699. at how

  700. Peter responds

  701. in verse

  702. eight.

  703. When Simon

  704. Peter saw

  705. this, he

  706. fell at

  707. Jesus'

  708. knees and

  709. said,

  710. go away

  711. from me

  712. Lord,

  713. I am a

  714. sinful man.

  715. this moment

  716. that we

  717. see, you

  718. know,

  719. throughout the

  720. scriptures,

  721. the prophet

  722. Isaiah,

  723. when he

  724. encounters the

  725. presence and

  726. the power of

  727. God, when he

  728. comes and he

  729. sees the glory

  730. of God, that

  731. God is holy,

  732. holy, holy as

  733. the Lord God

  734. Almighty who

  735. was, who is,

  736. and who is to

  737. come.

  738. What does the

  739. prophet Isaiah

  740. say?

  741. He says,

  742. woe to me,

  743. I am ruined,

  744. for I am a

  745. man of unclean

  746. lips and I live

  747. among a people

  748. of unclean

  749. lips.

  750. He says,

  751. go away from

  752. me Lord,

  753. I am a

  754. sinful man.

  755. When the

  756. Lord speaks

  757. to Job

  758. out of the

  759. storm,

  760. what does

  761. Job say?

  762. How does

  763. Job respond?

  764. He says,

  765. I despise

  766. myself and

  767. I repent

  768. in dust and

  769. ashes.

  770. Peter has

  771. just experienced

  772. the wisdom

  773. and the power

  774. and the

  775. authority of

  776. the eternal

  777. son of God

  778. and he says,

  779. go away from

  780. me Lord.

  781. I'm not

  782. worthy to be

  783. near you.

  784. I'm not

  785. worthy to

  786. even be

  787. anywhere close

  788. to the

  789. vicinity of

  790. your holiness

  791. because I

  792. am sinful.

  793. I'm a

  794. sinner full

  795. of sin.

  796. And this

  797. is how you

  798. know that

  799. you've begun

  800. a real

  801. relationship

  802. with the

  803. real Jesus.

  804. It's that

  805. you see

  806. power and

  807. holiness in

  808. him and

  809. therefore you

  810. see weakness

  811. and sinfulness

  812. in yourself.

  813. You realize

  814. when you get

  815. into the

  816. presence of

  817. Jesus'

  818. beauty how

  819. spiritually and

  820. morally ugly

  821. you are and

  822. how curved in

  823. on yourself

  824. you've actually

  825. become.

  826. You realize in

  827. the presence of

  828. Jesus'

  829. truth how

  830. fraudulent and

  831. false and

  832. phony and

  833. self-centered and

  834. self-serving you

  835. actually are.

  836. You realize in

  837. the presence of

  838. Jesus'

  839. goodness how

  840. even your

  841. best attempts

  842. to love are

  843. just deeply

  844. flawed and

  845. compromised

  846. with self-interest.

  847. You realize in

  848. the presence of

  849. Jesus'

  850. sovereignty and

  851. his supremacy

  852. how small and

  853. how puny you

  854. are.

  855. And you realize

  856. in the presence

  857. of his holiness

  858. and his

  859. righteousness just

  860. how full of

  861. sin you really

  862. are.

  863. That there's

  864. this vast

  865. difference between

  866. you and

  867. Jesus.

  868. And that

  869. radically begins

  870. to deconstruct

  871. yourself.

  872. It begins to

  873. deconstruct your

  874. identity, your

  875. foundation, your

  876. core of who

  877. you thought you

  878. were.

  879. Seeing Jesus for

  880. who he really

  881. is causes you to

  882. see yourself for

  883. who you really

  884. are and it fills

  885. you with this

  886. sense that I'm

  887. more flawed, I

  888. am more sinful

  889. than I ever

  890. dared to believe.

  891. And you have

  892. this fresh

  893. awareness of

  894. your own poverty,

  895. your own

  896. unworthiness, your

  897. own humility

  898. before the Lord.

  899. And you say,

  900. you know what,

  901. I have, actually,

  902. I have nothing to

  903. offer God.

  904. I am poor in

  905. spirit, I am

  906. utterly bankrupt

  907. before God.

  908. You see, many

  909. people are like

  910. Peter, they have

  911. some familiarity

  912. with Jesus, they've

  913. come into contact

  914. with Jesus, maybe

  915. they've even listened

  916. a little bit to

  917. Jesus, and perhaps

  918. even they've let

  919. Jesus use their

  920. stuff, but they're

  921. not yet a humbled

  922. and surrendered

  923. follower.

  924. Many people, they've

  925. only experienced

  926. the invitation of

  927. Jesus, but they've

  928. not yet stepped

  929. into this challenge

  930. of Jesus, they've

  931. not yet taken a

  932. step to trust in

  933. Jesus, they've not

  934. yet taken that

  935. risk of looking

  936. foolish and

  937. ridiculous and

  938. absurd in response

  939. to Jesus.

  940. They've not yet

  941. surrendered and

  942. submitted themselves

  943. to Jesus and

  944. therefore have not

  945. really experienced

  946. the wisdom and

  947. the power and

  948. the authority of

  949. Jesus or the

  950. sinfulness and

  951. self-centeredness of

  952. their own hearts.

  953. And maybe that's

  954. you today.

  955. Maybe you're at

  956. that critical moment,

  957. maybe you're at

  958. that fateful decision

  959. where Peter was,

  960. where Jesus is just

  961. waiting for you to

  962. say to him,

  963. because you say

  964. so, at your word.

  965. And I wonder what

  966. might be keeping

  967. you from just

  968. quietly, even just

  969. silently in your

  970. heart today, just

  971. saying to Jesus,

  972. you know, because

  973. you say so, I'm

  974. going to try to

  975. trust in you.

  976. That's the

  977. challenge of

  978. Jesus.

  979. But I also want to

  980. think together about

  981. the transforming

  982. grace of Jesus.

  983. Let's talk about the

  984. transforming grace of

  985. Jesus.

  986. Look at verse

  987. 10.

  988. It says,

  989. then Jesus said to

  990. Simon,

  991. don't be afraid,

  992. from now on you

  993. will fish for

  994. people.

  995. So they pulled

  996. their boats up on

  997. shore, left

  998. everything, and

  999. followed him.

1000. And what I want to

1001. do for a moment is

  1002. just I want to

  1003. explore those five

  1004. words, from now on

  1005. you will.

  1006. Okay?

  1007. Five words, from

  1008. now on you will.

  1009. If you want to

  1010. underline those, you

  1011. can.

  1012. And you've got to

  1013. pay close attention

  1014. and just follow me

  1015. because it's going to

1016. take me a minute to

  1017. unpack these five

  1018. words.

  1019. But God's grace in

  1020. Jesus Christ is this

  1021. unconditioned and

  1022. incongruous gift.

  1023. We talked about this

  1024. last week.

1025. It does not match the

  1026. worth of its

  1027. recipients and it's

  1028. unlimited by our

  1029. sinfulness, right?

  1030. Peter confesses, I

  1031. am sinful.

1032. I am full of sin.

  1033. He acknowledges, I

  1034. have no claim to

  1035. status or favor with

  1036. God.

  1037. He recognizes the

  1038. incongruity, right,

  1039. between how

  1040. poor and how

  1041. unworthy he is and

  1042. how good and

  1043. gracious and how

  1044. powerful and holy

  1045. the Lord is.

  1046. And

  1047. nevertheless, God's

  1048. grace is given

  1049. freely to Peter.

  1050. It's given without

  1051. prior conditions to

  1052. Peter.

  1053. It's given without

  1054. regard to Peter's

  1055. worth or his

  1056. capacity.

  1057. And this is

  1058. incredibly good news

  1059. if you're a sinful

  1060. person like Peter or

  1061. like me.

  1062. It's just really good

  1063. news that God and

  1064. his grace works like

  1065. this.

1066. But it's so very easy

  1067. to misunderstand the

  1068. grace of God because

  1069. many people will say,

  1070. ah, because the grace

1071. of God is free, it must

  1072. be cheap.

  1073. Right?

  1074. Because the grace of

1075. God is free, it must be

  1076. cheap.

1077. And it must not cost God

1078. very much to offer it if

1079. it's free and it must not

1080. cost me very much to

1081. receive it if it's free.

1082. And because this is such

  1083. a widely held

  1084. misunderstanding and

  1085. creating so much

  1086. dysfunction in the

  1087. lives of individual

  1088. Christians and in

  1089. collective Christian

  1090. communities, I just want

1091. to go a little deeper

  1092. here.

1093. Because the grace of God

1094. is free, it must be

  1095. cheap.

1096. But you know, when we

  1097. look at God's side,

1098. when we look at the

  1099. incarnation and the

  1100. crucifixion, when we look

  1101. at God's side, God's

  1102. grace is anything but

  1103. cheap.

  1104. Right?

1105. It costs God very much

1106. to give His grace to

  1107. Peter and to us.

  1108. Right?

1109. God the Father gave His

  1110. only and beloved Son.

  1111. Jesus had to empty

1112. Himself of all of His

  1113. heavenly glory and

  1114. riches to come to

  1115. earth.

  1116. He had to empty

1117. Himself of all of His

  1118. status and His

  1119. privileges of eternity

1120. to step into time and

  1121. take on human flesh.

1122. But we really see the

  1123. cost of God's grace

  1124. most clearly in the

  1125. crucifixion where Christ

  1126. crucified is at the

1127. center of this gospel of

  1128. grace because it shows

1129. us how much it costs

1130. God to deal with our

  1131. sin.

  1132. The Apostle Paul summarizes

1133. it this way in one of

  1134. the greatest verses of

  1135. the Bible.

1136. He says in 2 Corinthians

1137. 5.21, God made Him who

1138. knew no sin or had no

1139. sin to be sin for us so

1140. that in Him we might

  1141. become the righteousness

  1142. of God.

1143. That's the cost of grace

1144. is that the one who had

1145. no sin had to become sin

  1146. for us.

  1147. The crucifixion is the

1148. price tag for how much

1149. it costs, how much free

  1150. grace actually costs God.

1151. But what about on our

  1152. side?

  1153. Does grace cost us

  1154. anything?

1155. Does it cost us anything

  1156. to receive God's free

  1157. grace?

1158. And I want to show that

  1159. Peter demonstrates to us

  1160. that yes, God's grace

  1161. coming into our lives

  1162. costs us actually

  1163. everything.

1164. If you look at verse 10

  1165. again it says, Jesus

1166. says to Peter, don't be

1167. afraid, from now on you

  1168. will fish for people.

  1169. So they pulled their

  1170. boats on shore, left

  1171. everything, and followed

  1172. Him.

1173. You guys still with me a

  1174. little bit?

  1175. Am I?

  1176. Okay.

  1177. I know I'm going up a

  1178. little bit.

  1179. But what happens when

  1180. sinful Peter experiences

1181. the grace of God in

  1182. Jesus Christ?

  1183. Jesus says to him,

1184. Peter, from now on you

  1185. will.

1186. The grace of God is a

  1187. watershed before and

1188. after event in our lives

  1189. where we hear these

1190. words, from now on you

  1191. will.

  1192. Right?

1193. From now on you, Peter,

1194. are no longer your own.

1195. From now on you no longer

  1196. belong to yourself anymore.

  1197. anymore.

1198. From now on you are not

1199. your own master, you have

  1200. a new master.

1201. From now on you're no

1202. longer in control of your

  1203. life.

1204. From now on you do not get

1205. to decide what doctrines are

1206. true and what you're going

  1207. to believe.

1208. From now on you don't get

1209. to pick and choose what

1210. ethics are right and how

  1211. you're going to live.

1212. From now on you're no

1213. longer the Lord of your

  1214. life because why?

  1215. Jesus is Lord.

1216. That's the message of the

  1217. whole New Testament is

1218. that Jesus is the Lord

  1219. and we're not.

  1220. Yes, God freely welcomes

1221. us and he includes us as

1222. we are but his free grace

1223. does not allow us to

  1224. remain as we are.

1225. And if Peter were here

1226. today he would tell you

1227. Jesus did not allow me to

  1228. stay as I was.

1229. That would be cheap grace

  1230. and that you receive

  1231. God's grace and after

  1232. that anything goes and

1233. you can just live as you

  1234. please.

1235. But the grace of God,

1236. what I'm trying to say is

1237. that the grace of God is

1238. free but it's not cheap.

1239. The grace of God is both

1240. free and as we can see

  1241. with Peter it's demanding.

1242. The grace of God is both

1243. liberating and as we can

  1244. see with Peter it's

  1245. transforming.

  1246. Cheap grace is grace

  1247. without expectations.

  1248. Cheap grace is grace

  1249. without obligations of

  1250. response.

1251. But how does Peter respond?

1252. He pulled his boat up on

  1253. shore, left everything and

  1254. followed him.

1255. God's grace in Jesus Christ

  1256. is so transforming that

1257. Peter leaves his old life

1258. behind to begin a new life

  1259. as a surrendered apprentice,

  1260. a submitted disciple of

  1261. Jesus.

1262. God's grace in Jesus Christ

  1263. is so transforming that

  1264. Peter leaves behind the

1265. biggest catch of his life,

  1266. all the enormous profits

1267. that would accrue to him

1268. as a result of taking it

  1269. to market.

1270. He leaves behind piles of

1271. cash, all the wealth that

1272. would have given him to

1273. feed his family for an

  1274. entire year.

1275. God's grace in Jesus Christ

  1276. is so transforming that

1277. Peter leaves all of that

1278. behind to go and follow

1279. Jesus in this new identity

1280. in this new mission that

  1281. Jesus has for him.

  1282. It's not cheap grace.

  1283. It's costly grace.

1284. It literally costs Peter a

  1285. lot of money.

1286. The grace of God is given

1287. freely in that it's given

  1288. without prior conditions.

1289. It's given without regard to

  1290. worth, the capacity.

1291. It's given to people who say,

  1292. I am a sinful man.

1293. But that does not mean that

  1294. God's grace comes without

  1295. expectations of return, with

1296. no hope for a response, with

  1297. no strings attached.

  1298. God's grace carries strong

  1299. expectations because it's a

  1300. costly grace.

  1301. It's a transforming grace.

1302. When the Apostle Paul writes

  1303. his greatest letter, the

1304. letter to the Romans, he

  1305. spends 11 chapters unpacking

  1306. what grace means.

1307. And then when you get to

  1308. chapter 12, he says,

  1309. therefore, I urge you,

  1310. brothers and sisters, in

1311. view of God's mercy, in view

1312. of his grace, to offer your

  1313. bodies as living sacrifices,

1314. holy and pleasing to God, just

  1315. as Peter's doing here.

1316. This is your true and proper

  1317. worship.

1318. He says, do not conform to the

1319. pattern of this world, but be

1320. transformed by the renewing of

  1321. your mind.

1322. Jesus says, from now on, you

  1323. will.

  1324. And it's a word of costly

  1325. grace.

1326. God's grace in Jesus Christ

  1327. causes such a fundamental

  1328. reconfiguration and remolding of

1329. the self that it recreates in us

1330. a whole new set of values, new

  1331. dispositions, new habits, new

1332. practices, new purposes, as the

  1333. inevitable and the necessary

1334. expression of God's grace in our

  1335. lives.

1336. Does any of that make sense?

1337. So, if you're going to become a

1338. disciple of Jesus, you've got to

1339. not only respond to the invitation

1340. of Jesus, but also there's the

  1341. challenge of Jesus.

1342. And then if you respond to the

1343. challenge of Jesus, there's this

1344. transforming grace of Jesus, right?

1345. You can't stay as you were.

1346. But then finally, I want you to just

1347. see for a minute the mission of

  1348. Jesus.

  1349. The mission of Jesus.

1350. Here is Peter and he's eyeball to

1351. eyeball with this person who he now

1352. realizes is a person of incredible

1353. wisdom and power and authority.

1354. That Jesus has absolute control over

  1355. nature.

1356. That he's sovereign over every square

1357. inch of space, every molecule of

1358. matter, every nanosecond of time.

1359. And what does the sovereign Lord say

  1360. to sinful Peter?

1361. He says in verse 10, from now on you

  1362. will what?

  1363. Fish for people.

1364. From now on you're going to fish for

  1365. people.

1366. Peter, I have a future for you.

1367. I want you to be my partner.

1368. I want you to join in what I'm doing.

1369. I want you to participate in my

  1370. mission.

1371. Peter, just as you've been fishing for

1372. fish, and just as I've been fishing

1373. for you, Peter, from now on you're going

1374. to join me in fishing for people and

  1375. catching people.

1376. And that's what God's free but costly

  1377. grace does to us.

1378. It sends us out into the world to serve

  1379. others.

1380. It sends us to no longer live for

1381. ourselves but to live for a greater

1382. and bigger cause, the greatest mission

1383. that's ever been conceived in this

1384. world, the mission of Jesus.

1385. And Luke chapter 5 gives us these four

    Luke 5 chapter mention

1386. amazing examples of Jesus catching

  1387. people.

1388. First of all, he catches Peter.

1389. And then he goes and catches a leper and

  1390. a paralytic and a tax collector.

1391. Each of these deserves a sermon.

1392. I'm going to give them each about a minute.

  1393. You ready?

1394. First of all, the leper.

1395. This man has debilitating skin disease.

  1396. He's a social outcast.

1397. He's not allowed to live in town.

1398. He's not allowed to have a job.

1399. He's not allowed to go to worship.

1400. And because of these things, this man is

  1401. economically poor.

1402. He's relationally and emotionally isolated.

  1403. He's spiritually cursed.

1404. And Jesus is bringing Peter along and he's

1405. showing Peter, okay, let me show you how to

  1406. catch people like this.

1407. This is how you fish for a man like this.

1408. And it says that Jesus reaches out his

1409. hand and he touches the leper.

1410. Like, when's the last time this guy's been

  1411. touched?

  1412. You don't touch lepers.

1413. And Jesus could have easily healed this man

1414. without touching him at all.

1415. But Jesus knows that he needs to be brought back

  1416. into community.

1417. He needs to be shown a compassion that nobody's

  1418. ever shown him.

1419. He needs not just to be cleansed.

1420. He needs to be loved and accepted in the way that his

  1421. heart is longing for.

1422. And he shows Peter, if you want to reach people,

1423. you've got to reach out and touch them.

1424. And then secondly, we get not only this leper, but we

1425. get this paralytic who has these amazing friends and

1426. they go to great lengths.

1427. They go way out of their way to just get people to

  1428. Jesus.

1429. And we know in the other Gospels that the house that

1430. they bring this man to and they tear the roof off of,

  1431. it's actually Peter's house.

1432. And I'm sure Peter's, like, not super jazzed about his

  1433. roof.

  1434. I mean, I just, that's a total bummer.

1435. And he gets, they get the man down to Jesus.

1436. And what does Jesus say to this paralyzed man?

1437. He says, friend, your sins are forgiven.

1438. And everybody's looking around at Jesus going like, hey,

1439. that's not what they came for.

  1440. He's paralyzed.

1441. And Jesus says, friends, your sins are forgiven.

1442. He's saying, look, you've come to me with a certain problem

1443. that you think needs to be solved.

1444. But what I want to tell you is that you have a much deeper

  1445. problem.

1446. You've got two paralyzing diseases, not just one.

1447. And Jesus is showing Peter that when you go fish for people,

1448. when you go to catch people, don't just look for the

1449. paralysis of their body or their life.

1450. Look for the paralysis of their soul.

1451. Jesus says to this man, there are sins between you and God.

1452. You're not right with God.

1453. And what you most need, your fundamental problem,

1454. the disease that's most destroying you is that you need

1455. your sins to be forgiven.

1456. And Peter, when you go fish for people, when you go catch for

1457. people, that is people's most fundamental need.

1458. They need to experience the forgiveness of God.

1459. And Jesus takes Peter fishing not only for this leper and for

1460. this paralytic to put that man back in a right relationship with

1461. God, but he also goes fishing for this tax collector, this guy

  1462. who's the worst.

1463. Levi, he's been collaborating with the Roman occupying power.

1464. He's been oppressing and extorting his fellow Jews.

1465. He's been making egregious spiritual, moral, and relational

  1466. compromises.

1467. Tax collectors were just the most deeply resented and wildly

  1468. unpopular people.

  1469. They were traitors.

  1470. They were thieves.

1471. They were the most hated group of social outcasts.

1472. And Jesus says to Peter, let's go fishing.

  1473. Let's go catch.

1474. Let's go catch somebody else.

1475. Jesus is showing Peter that fishing for people and catching

1476. people means deliberately going after those people who are out on the

1477. margins, intentionally pursuing people who've been written off as too far

1478. from God, going after people that have been dismissed as they're never

1479. going to become part of the family of God or the kingdom of God.

1480. And Jesus says, Peter, it's all about touching people that you're not

  1481. supposed to touch.

1482. It's all about helping people experience forgiveness who have deep spiritual

  1483. problems.

1484. It's all about eating and drinking like your family with people that don't

  1485. belong at a table.

1486. That's what fishing for people is all about.

1487. That's what it means to be part of my mission.

1488. He says, I have not come to call people who think that they are healthy and who

1489. think that they are righteous and who think that they do not need a doctor and

1490. they do not need a healer.

1491. He says, no, I've come to call people who know themselves to be sick sinners in need

  1492. of repentance.

1493. And friends, if the free but costly grace of God has come into your life, I think the

1494. question for us today is, are we willing to just begin to follow Jesus and join Him in

1495. His fishing ministry as He wants to fish for people?

1496. Just as Peter caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break and their

  1497. boats began to sink.

1498. Over these past 2,000 years, Jesus has caught so many people in His nets and so many people

  1499. in His boat.

1500. And I believe He doesn't just want to do that like back then, a long time ago, but He

1501. wants to do it now.

1502. He doesn't want to do it in other parts of the world.

1503. He wants to do it here.

1504. And I think that Jesus is saying to us in 2025, hey, Christ Church, let me show you how to

  1505. fish for people.

1506. If you'll just put out in some deep water and let down your nets for a catch and do something

1507. that maybe is uncomfortable for you, I can do it.

1508. And so the question is whether or not we're going to trust Jesus.

1509. The question is whether or not we're going to respond like Peter and just say, you know

  1510. what, Jesus?

  1511. That sounds good.

  1512. Because you say so.

1513. I'm going to try it your way.

1514. May God give us that amazing faith that Peter had that changed his life forever, changed the

  1515. world forever.

1516. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, amen.

  1517. Amen.

  1518. Amen.
