  5. Good morning, Christchurch. My name is Suzy Shin,

  6. and I'm part of the Wednesday Women's Group in Oakland,

  7. and the monthly Friday Families Group, also in Oakland.

  8. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 6, verses 17 to 36, as printed in your liturgy.

    Luke 6:17–36

  9. A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

  10. He went down with them and stood on a level place.

  11. A large crowd of his disciples was there, and a great number of people from all over Judea,

  12. from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,

  13. who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.

  14. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured,

  15. and the people all tried to touch him because power was coming from him and healing them all.

  16. Looking at his disciples, he said,

  17. Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

  18. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.

  19. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

  20. Blessed are you when people hate you,

  21. when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

  22. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven,

  23. for that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

  24. But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.

  25. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.

  26. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

  27. Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,

  28. for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

  29. But to you who are listening, I say,

  30. Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

  31. bless those who curse you,

  32. pray for those who mistreat you.

  33. If someone slaps you on one cheek,

  34. turn to them the other also.

  35. If someone takes your coat,

  36. do not withhold your shirt from them.

  37. Give to everyone who asks you,

  38. and if anyone takes what belongs to you,

  39. do not demand it back.

  40. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

  41. If you love those who love you,

  42. what credit is that to you?

  43. Even sinners love those who love them.

  44. And if you do good to those who are good to you,

  45. what credit is that to you?

  46. Even sinners do that.

  47. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment,

  48. what credit is that to you?

  49. Even sinners lend to sinners,

  50. expecting to be repaid in full.

  51. But love your enemies,

  52. do good to them,

  53. and lend to them without expecting to get anything back.

  54. Then your reward will be great,

  55. and you will be children of the Most High,

  56. because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

  57. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

  58. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

  59. Praise to you, Lord.

  60. Thank you, Susie, for that scripture reading.

  61. Good morning, everyone.

  62. My name's Andrew.

  63. I'm one of the pastors here.

  64. And I'm glad to open up God's Word with you.

  65. Looking forward to diving into this text.

  66. Let's go to the Lord in prayer

  67. before we dive into His Word.

  68. Father, we pray that as we give our attention to Your Word,

  69. Your Spirit, which inspired this Word,

  70. would convict our hearts.

  71. That these familiar teachings of Jesus

  72. that we will hear and discuss today

  73. would strike us fresh and new,

  74. and that You would get rid of that familiarity, Lord,

  75. and bring conviction and concrete action

  76. in Your church.

  77. That we'd be a people of love.

  78. That we'd be a people who are a countercultural force

  79. in this broken world,

  80. so dissatisfied with the status quo

  81. and so longing to bear witness

  82. to Your Son's better kingdom.

  83. Make us that kind of a church, God.

  84. In Jesus' name, amen.

  85. This morning, we are opening up

  86. chapter 6 of Luke's Gospel.

  87. It's a pretty lengthy portion,

  88. and some people like to call this,

  89. you know, you've heard of the Sermon on the Mount

  90. in Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  91. Some people like to call this

  92. the Sermon on the Plain, all right?

  93. Because if you paid attention,

  94. in verse 17, it says,

  95. He went down with them and stood on a level place.

  96. So they call this the Sermon on the Plain.

  97. They're not sure if this is, you know,

  98. combined instances or things like that.

  99. But, you know, we're pretty sure Jesus probably preached

  100. a lot of the same things,

  101. just like Jonathan and me do all the time

  102. in different places.

  103. So that's why you have a lot of overlap here.

  104. But we're gonna call this the Sermon on the Plain.

  105. And how He opens the Sermon on the Plain

  106. is with these two pretty famous

  107. and radical teachings.

  108. These might be some of the most famous

  109. and radical teachings

  110. that Jesus has given to us.

  111. And it's definitely caught people's attention

  112. over the past 2,000 plus years

  113. because of how uniquely transformative

  114. and world-altering they've been.

  115. And if I could just summarize

  116. these two teachings for us today,

  117. it's Jesus' teachings

  118. on whom He called blessed

  119. and whom we're supposed to love.

  120. Just two things,

  121. whom He called blessed

  122. and whom we're supposed to love.

  123. And we're gonna look at these teachings today.

  124. But before we dive in,

  125. I wanted to share a story with you.

  126. I was listening to the podcast,

  127. The Voice of the Martyrs,

  128. not that long ago.

  129. And it was this YWAM missionary

  130. who went out to Nigeria,

  131. southern Nigeria,

  132. to serve a bunch of

  133. now single and widowed women.

  134. About 100-something of these women

  135. who had to leave

  136. where they were from,

  137. northern Nigeria,

  138. because the Boko Haram

  139. and other Islamic terrorists

  140. had burned down their houses

  141. and murdered their families

  142. and they'd had to escape

  143. and run down to southern Nigeria.

  144. And so this YWAM missionary

  145. is just kind of recounting

  146. her experience there.

  147. And she tells the story of

  148. one evening,

  149. it's about 2,

  150. she says it's like 2.09 a.m.

  151. and she hears this interesting sound,

  152. this beautiful sound,

  153. outside of where she's staying

  154. and she gets a light

  155. and she walks out

  156. to see what's going on.

  157. It sounds like people are praying,

  158. crying out to God.

  159. It sounds like people are worshiping.

  160. And what she finds is that

  161. there are 100 women

  162. in the tent right next to her

  163. and they are worshiping

  164. and they are crying out to God.

  165. and what they're doing

  166. is they are crying out to God

  167. for the people

  168. who murdered their families.

  169. They're asking God

  170. to forgive them,

  171. to send His grace,

  172. to transform them.

  173. And the reason why they're praying

  174. and crying out to God

  175. at 2.08 a.m. at night

  176. is because that's the time

  177. when many of their families

  178. are often attacked.

  179. So they're also praying

  180. against the darkness.

  181. They're praying against

  182. the evil forces

  183. that would go and still attack

  184. many of the other families

  185. and villages there.

  186. And, you know,

  187. this YY missionary,

  188. she couldn't understand

  189. the language that they were speaking.

  190. She couldn't understand

  191. exactly what they were saying.

  192. But she said that this was

  193. the holiest moment

  194. that she'd ever witnessed.

  195. The most beautiful,

  196. the most powerful,

  197. the most sacred,

  198. the holiest moment

  199. that she'd ever witnessed

  200. at these 100

  201. widowed Nigerian women

  202. that we will never know

  203. or hear about otherwise, right?

  204. And the question I want to ask is,

  205. what can possess a person,

  206. what can compel

  207. hundreds of women

  208. to do such a thing?

  209. What would get us

  210. to love our enemy

  211. in such a way?

  212. And what could create

  213. that kind of community

  214. where we could look at them

  215. and say,

  216. wow,

  217. I'm sad for them,

  218. but man,

  219. these women

  220. are special women.

  221. Blessed are the poor.

  222. What kind of truth,

  223. what kind of reality

  224. do we need to confess?

  225. Do we need to believe in

  226. that can do this

  227. in this world?

  228. That's the question

  229. I want to ask this morning

  230. as we open up

  231. this radical,

  232. truly radical teaching

  233. of Jesus here

  234. in Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  235. So I want us to be asking,

  236. you know,

  237. when Jesus is saying,

  238. you know,

  239. blessed are you who are poor,

  240. and woe to you

  241. who are rich.

  242. I want us to be asking,

  243. is this really right?

  244. Is this really true?

  245. Do I want this to be right?

  246. Do I want this to be true?

  247. And can I believe this?

  248. Can I actually believe this

  249. and live like this?

  250. I want us to be asking

  251. those questions.

  252. So let's now dive

  253. into our text.

  254. I want to start us

  255. in verse 20, actually.

  256. We're going to talk about

  257. whom Jesus calls blessed,

  258. all right?

  259. Luke 20,

  260. Luke 6,

    Luke 6:20

  261. verse 20,

  262. it says,

  263. Looking at his disciples,

  264. Jesus said,

  265. blessed are you who are poor,

  266. for yours is the kingdom of God.

  267. Blessed are you who hunger now,

  268. for you will be satisfied.

  269. Blessed are you who weep now,

  270. for you will laugh.

  271. Blessed are you

  272. when people hate you,

  273. when they exclude you

  274. and insult you

  275. and reject your name as evil

  276. because of the Son of Man.

  277. Now, I don't know about you,

  278. but, you know,

  279. I grew up in the church.

  280. I've, you know,

  281. read the Bible a handful,

  282. many times,

  283. and I've come across this verse

  284. tons of times in my life

  285. and, you know,

  286. for many years,

  287. I had a lot of trouble

  288. with this text

  289. because it seems super important.

  290. It's like the beginning

  291. of the Sermon on the Mount,

  292. the beginning of the Sermon on the Plain,

  293. everyone's memorizing it,

  294. quoting it,

  295. but I also had trouble

  296. understanding

  297. what this really means,

  298. these blessed are statements.

  299. Like,

  300. what is Jesus trying to communicate?

  301. Is he saying that,

  302. you know,

  303. we should try to be poor

  304. and hungry

  305. to be blessed?

  306. Is that the requirement?

  307. Only the poor

  308. and the hungry

  309. can be blessed?

  310. Or is he saying

  311. there's a special blessing

  312. for those who are hated

  313. and for those who weep?

  314. Or is he just kind of

  315. broad brush stroking this,

  316. you know,

  317. just speaking in generalities,

  318. you know,

  319. you're more susceptible

  320. to be blessed

  321. if you're poor

  322. because you're more

  323. desperate for God,

  324. more open to Him,

  325. more needy before Him?

  326. What is going on here

  327. in this text?

  328. Why does Jesus lead

  329. His most famous sermons

  330. with these lines,

  331. blessed are?

  332. Oh,

  333. in my,

  334. you know,

  335. in my studying,

  336. I found that what helps

  337. is if we actually notice

  338. who Jesus is speaking to,

  339. okay?

  340. So look at verse 17

  341. and I want you to try

  342. to imagine this crowd

  343. that Jesus is addressing.

  344. It says,

  345. a large crowd of His disciples

  346. was there

  347. and a great number of people,

  348. listen,

  349. from all over Judea,

  350. from Jerusalem

  351. and from the coastal region

  352. around Tyre and Sidon.

  353. We're talking

  354. hundreds of miles apart.

  355. Many of these people

  356. probably traveled by foot,

  357. right?

  358. These people are desperate

  359. for what it says

  360. for healing.

  361. It says,

  362. who had come to hear Him

  363. and to be healed

  364. of their diseases,

  365. right?

  366. So this is a large crowd,

  367. people who are tired,

  368. they've traveled a long way

  369. and it's a bunch

  370. of diseased people,

  371. right?

  372. And it says,

  373. those troubled

  374. by impure spirits

  375. who were cured,

  376. right?

  377. So it's also

  378. a bunch of people

  379. who were maybe possessed

  380. and attacked

  381. and plagued

  382. by evil spirits,

  383. probably seen as crazy

  384. and probably very isolated

  385. in their communities.

  386. Maybe there are even people

  387. who feel very guilty

  388. and ashamed

  389. about how they let

  390. the evil forces

  391. into their lives,

  392. maybe through wicked acts

  393. or just poor decisions.

  394. And then look at verse 19.

  395. And the people all tried

  396. to touch Him.

  397. Okay?

  398. So just think about this.

  399. This is a group

  400. of desperate people.

  401. They've traveled

  402. hundreds of miles

  403. hoping against all hope

  404. that by somehow touching

  405. this rabbi from Nazareth,

  406. they will somehow

  407. have their lives changed.

  408. This is kind of

  409. a last ditch effort,

  410. right?

  411. Who would do that?

  412. Who of us would do that?

  413. Only the most desperate of us.

  414. And so this was the audience

  415. that Jesus had.

  416. This is who He's speaking to.

  417. He's not speaking to elites.

  418. This isn't a rich,

  419. well-fed,

  420. laughter-filled crowd

  421. full of beloved

  422. and, you know,

  423. admired influencers.

  424. Jesus is addressing the poor,

  425. the desperate,

  426. the diseased,

  427. the powerless,

  428. the tormented,

  429. the troubled,

  430. the isolated,

  431. and the weary.

  432. People who couldn't

  433. save themselves

  434. and who knew that very well

  435. and whose last hope

  436. in the world

  437. was some random rabbi

  438. from Nazareth.

  439. So this is a scene

  440. that we need to have

  441. in our minds.

  442. And I want to make it clear

  443. now what Jesus is not doing

  444. when He's giving us

  445. these blessed are you statements.

  446. Okay?

  447. When Jesus says blessed are you,

  448. this actually isn't a blessing

  449. that He's pronouncing.

  450. Like, He's not calling

  451. some divine favor

  452. and divine blessing

  453. upon people.

  454. There's a different

  455. and more specific Greek word

  456. that would have been used

  457. if He was doing that.

  458. No.

  459. Actually,

  460. the Greek word here

  461. for blessed

  462. just means happy,

  463. lucky,

  464. fortunate.

  465. You could even translate this

  466. as you who are poor,

  467. congratulations.

  468. All right?

  469. That's what this word

  470. is kind of indicating.

  471. So Jesus isn't performing

  472. a speech act

  473. of blessing upon these people.

  474. No, Jesus isn't blessing anyone,

  475. but rather,

  476. He's making a statement.

  477. He's making a comment

  478. and a surprising one

  479. at that about who

  480. can be considered

  481. as blessed

  482. in His kingdom.

  483. And apparently,

  484. it's not the rich,

  485. the well-fed,

  486. those who laugh,

  487. it's not those who are spoken well of,

  488. but it's the poor,

  489. the hungry,

  490. the weeping,

  491. and the hated.

  492. So really,

  493. this is more of an announcement

  494. than a pronouncement.

  495. All right?

  496. It's not a promise,

  497. it's not a proverb

  498. or a formula.

  499. He's not setting forth

  500. a list of virtues

  501. and ideals

  502. for people to pursue

  503. so that they can be blessed by God.

  504. Jesus isn't saying,

  505. thou shalt be poor

  506. and persecuted,

  507. hungry and weeping

  508. in order to be blessed by God.

  509. He's not telling people

  510. to pursue poverty

  511. and persecution.

  512. Jesus never teaches us

  513. to pursue suffering

  514. just for the sake of suffering.

  515. I think Stanley Hauerwas

  516. says it really well

  517. when he writes,

  518. too often these descriptive statements

  519. are turned into ideals

  520. we must strive to attain.

  521. As ideals,

  522. they can become formulas

  523. for power

  524. rather than descriptions

  525. of the kind of people

  526. characteristic

  527. of the new age

  528. brought by Christ.

  529. Thus,

  530. Jesus does not tell us

  531. that we should try

  532. to become poor.

  533. He simply says

  534. that many who are called

  535. into the kingdom

  536. will find that,

  537. hey,

  538. a lot of us are poor.

  539. So again,

  540. Jesus' words here

  541. aren't virtues,

  542. proverbs,

  543. or commands

  544. or formulas

  545. or pronouncements.

  546. Jesus isn't telling people

  547. to pursue poverty,

  548. to mourn all the time

  549. and to go and get persecuted.

  550. No,

  551. what he's really saying

  552. is you can be

  553. all these things,

  554. poor,

  555. hungry,

  556. weepy,

  557. hated,

  558. excluded,

  559. and at the same time

  560. you can still be blessed

  561. in his kingdom.

  562. That's the kind of kingdom

  563. he's here to bring.

  564. He's here to open their eyes

  565. and our eyes

  566. to the kingdom's

  567. radical reversal

  568. of the world's values.

  569. He's saying

  570. everything you thought

  571. about your worth

  572. and your status

  573. and your value,

  574. everything you've been told

  575. by all the empires

  576. of this world

  577. that the first

  578. shall be first

  579. and the last

  580. shall be last,

  581. my kingdom doesn't play

  582. by those rules.

  583. Their standards

  584. are not my standards.

  585. Their values

  586. are not my values.

  587. Thus saith the Lord

  588. Jesus Christ.

  589. You have heard

  590. that it was said,

  591. blessed are the rich,

  592. but I say to you,

  593. woe to you who are rich

  594. and blessed are you

  595. who are poor

  596. for yours

  597. is the kingdom of God.

  598. Sure, to be poor

  599. is fundamentally

  600. to lack

  601. what your community values,

  602. but in my kingdom

  603. you can be poor

  604. and yet you can have everything.

  605. You can have the kingdom.

  606. It can be yours.

  607. In my kingdom,

  608. Jesus says,

  609. those who hunger

  610. will be satisfied

  611. at the end of the day.

  612. Those who weep

  613. will be laughing

  614. at the end of the story.

  615. And those who are hated

  616. and excluded

  617. and insulted

  618. and rejected

  619. on account of me,

  620. they will one day

  621. be vindicated

  622. because of their association

  623. with me.

  624. Jesus is saying,

  625. just because you're

  626. on top of the world,

  627. just because you're

  628. an elite and a winner

  629. and an achiever

  630. and just because your life

  631. is going well,

  632. this may not mean

  633. that you are actually

  634. blessed.

  635. You might be on the top

  636. amongst the empires

  637. of the world,

  638. you can be

  639. all the way at the top

  640. and yet not at all

  641. be a part of my

  642. better kingdom,

  643. Jesus says.

  644. And then he points us

  645. to the example

  646. of the prophets

  647. who many of them

  648. were persecuted

  649. and slaughtered

  650. and insulted

  651. and disregarded

  652. in verse 24.

  653. Even though they were

  654. disregarded by many kings

  655. and even if we may

  656. be classified as lowly,

  657. worthless,

  658. and insignificant

  659. by the kings

  660. of this world today,

  661. Jesus says we can rejoice.

  662. We can leap for joy

  663. because like the prophets,

  664. our reward is safe

  665. in heaven, he says.

  666. And this is an established

  667. pattern that he wants

  668. us to see in our world

  669. that's actually gone

  670. upside down.

  671. You know,

  672. the only reason

  673. the first shall be first

  674. and the last shall be last

  675. seems to make sense to us

  676. is because we live

  677. in a fallen world.

  678. That's the only reason

  679. that that makes sense to us.

  680. When God blessed

  681. our ancestors

  682. and called them

  683. to be fruitful

  684. and to multiply

  685. and to fill the earth,

  686. he didn't intend

  687. for there to be winners

  688. and losers

  689. in a zero-sum game.

  690. Sure, he might have

  691. endowed Adam

  692. with certain unique gifts

  693. and then Eve

  694. with others,

  695. but they were not

  696. to compete with each other

  697. for a limited amount

  698. of resources

  699. in order to live

  700. and in order to thrive.

  701. Their survival

  702. and their success

  703. weren't to be

  704. at each other's expenses.

  705. Their differences

  706. weren't meant

  707. for division

  708. and mutual antagonism,

  709. but for delight

  710. and mutual advancement.

  711. And any competition

  712. that existed

  713. was intended

  714. to serve the whole community

  715. and to help each other

  716. break barriers

  717. and further flourish.

  718. There was no first

  719. and there was no last,

  720. but they were to acknowledge

  721. and honor the image of God

  722. in every single human being.

  723. They were to live

  724. by the self-giving spirit

  725. of God.

  726. This is what it was like

  727. when the world

  728. was truly right side up.

  729. But see,

  730. when sin entered the world,

  731. when humanity

  732. went our own way

  733. rather than God's way,

  734. and Adam set himself

  735. in opposition to Eve,

  736. and Cain set himself

  737. against Abel,

  738. and Cain and his descendants

  739. built cities

  740. and empires

  741. not for human flourishing,

  742. not for mutual generosity,

  743. but for mere survival

  744. and protection

  745. from one another,

  746. for building violent

  747. and competitive advantages

  748. against other tribes,

  749. humanity has lived

  750. in this fallen world

  751. for so long,

  752. and this is why

  753. the first shall be first

  754. and the last shall be last

  755. seems right side up.

  756. Because of sin

  757. in this world,

  758. and because of the pattern

  759. of selfishness

  760. and survival

  761. by violent competition,

  762. the spirit of self-protection

  763. at all costs,

  764. it's just permeated

  765. all of our history,

  766. all of our existence,

  767. even if it means

  768. obliterating others, right?

  769. So they have no chance

  770. of threatening us

  771. or our survival anymore.

  772. The spirit of self-protection

  773. has ruled our world

  774. ever since the fall,

  775. and it's whispered

  776. into our ears,

  777. hate your neighbor.

  778. Hate your neighbor

  779. and seek their destruction,

  780. and then and only then

  781. will you survive and thrive.

  782. And this has seemed right

  783. to us in our sin

  784. and in our blindness

  785. and in our brokenness,

  786. that this is just

  787. how things are.

  788. Dog eats dog.

  789. Survival of the fittest.

  790. Might makes right.

  791. But Jesus,

  792. Jesus came to reverse

  793. the spirit

  794. and to restore

  795. his better,

  796. purer,

  797. righteous spirit.

  798. So not only does he teach

  799. that the poor

  800. can be considered

  801. as blessed citizens

  802. in the kingdom of God,

  803. but that citizens

  804. in his kingdom

  805. must also love

  806. their enemies.

  807. They must also

  808. love their enemies.

  809. Jesus comes in the power

  810. and the authority

  811. of a better spirit,

  812. not the spirit

  813. of self-protection,

  814. but Jesus is restoring

  815. the spirit

  816. of a self-giving love.

  817. Though now,

  818. it's got an even

  819. greater obstacle, right?

  820. See, before the fall,

  821. self-giving love,

  822. that was natural,

  823. and there were no enemies

  824. to even hate.

  825. But since the fall,

  826. self-giving love

  827. has only become

  828. more difficult

  829. because we are now

  830. not just asked

  831. to give ourselves

  832. and our lives

  833. in love to our neighbors,

  834. but also to our enemies,

  835. those who hate us,

  836. those who threaten us.

  837. Verse 27 says,

  838. but to you who are listening,

  839. I say,

  840. love your enemies.

  841. That is,

  842. love those who are

  843. the objects of your hate.

  844. That's what that word

  845. enemy means.

  846. Those who are the objects

  847. of your enmity

  848. and your hostility.

  849. And this is a radical

  850. and seemingly unnatural

  851. and impossible command.

  852. But wait,

  853. there's more.

  854. Do good to those

  855. who hate you.

  856. Meaning,

  857. actively work for the wellness

  858. and the wholeness

  859. and health.

  860. Not just passively,

  861. don't attack your enemies

  862. anymore,

  863. but spend your energy

  864. to move toward them

  865. and to lift them up.

  866. Verse 28,

  867. bless those who curse you.

  868. Now this word for bless,

  869. this is the Greek word

  870. of speaking God's

  871. divine favor

  872. and abundance

  873. and generous blessing

  874. and shalom

  875. upon someone.

  876. Jesus saying,

  877. do that

  878. for the person

  879. who hates you.

  880. Do that for the person

  881. who's done the exact opposite

  882. to you

  883. by cursing you.

  884. And pray for those

  885. who mistreat you,

  886. Jesus says.

  887. This word mistreat

  888. can be translated

  889. even threaten

  890. or abuse.

  891. Pray for them,

  892. he says.

  893. Jesus is commanding

  894. something these people

  895. would never have heard of.

  896. Sure,

  897. in the Torah,

  898. you have commandments

  899. like love your neighbor

  900. as yourself,

  901. but now Jesus

  902. is radically expanding

  903. the definition

  904. of who our neighbors are.

  905. Even the most hostile,

  906. even the most dangerous

  907. personal,

  908. political,

  909. and religious enemies,

  910. he calls us to love.

  911. And yet Jesus

  912. has even more to say

  913. to elaborate

  914. on what this kind of love

  915. for enemies looks like.

  916. Look at verse 29.

  917. If someone slaps you

  918. on one cheek,

  919. it's one of the most

  920. shameful,

  921. disrespectful things

  922. you could do

  923. to a Jewish man.

  924. Jesus says,

  925. turn the other

  926. also.

  927. And this doesn't just mean

  928. let him hit you twice

  929. before you retaliate.

  930. In that culture,

  931. if you offered

  932. your cheek to someone,

  933. you were being vulnerable

  934. to them.

  935. And you were posturing

  936. yourself toward them

  937. to receive a kiss.

  938. You were posturing

  939. yourself toward them

  940. as a friend,

  941. desiring a certain level

  942. of intimacy

  943. with that person.

  944. Jesus is saying,

  945. treat your enemies

  946. as friends

  947. and give them

  948. another chance

  949. for friendship.

  950. Pursue friendship

  951. with them,

  952. invulnerability,

  953. even when you have

  954. no expectation

  955. that they will

  956. receive you

  957. as a friend,

  958. even after they've

  959. massively disrespected

  960. you and hurt you.

  961. He continues,

  962. if someone takes

  963. your coat,

  964. do not withhold

  965. your shirt from them.

  966. So he's saying,

  967. also be generous

  968. with your belongings

  969. toward those

  970. who dispossess you.

  971. And listen,

  972. he was talking to people

  973. right at the poor

  974. who might have only

  975. had one coat.

  976. When he's saying,

  977. do not withhold

  978. your shirt from others,

  979. he's saying,

  980. we love

  981. by becoming vulnerable

  982. and opening ourselves

  983. up to embarrassment

  984. and shame

  985. even to the point

  986. of being shirtless

  987. or perhaps even naked.

  988. Give to everyone

  989. who asks you,

  990. he says in verse 30,

  991. and if anyone takes

  992. what belongs to you,

  993. do not demand it back.

  994. Do to others

  995. as you would have them

  996. do to you.

  997. You know,

  998. I think for many of us,

  999. whether Christians

  1000. or not,

1001. the shock of this teaching,

1002. it may have worn off on us.

  1003. Like, of course.

  1004. Yeah, okay, Jesus.

1005. I'll try to love more

  1006. this Sunday.

  1007. Of course Andrew

1008. is going to say that.

1009. I'll try to be more selfless.

1010. I'll try to be more sacrificial.

  1011. I know.

  1012. I love Gandhi.

  1013. I admire Dr. King.

  1014. You know.

1015. But I want to challenge us

1016. to marinate in these words,

1017. to linger on these words

1018. and what they really mean

  1019. concretely

  1020. an hour later today.

  1021. Tomorrow.

  1022. In your workplaces.

  1023. In your schools.

  1024. What does this mean?

  1025. In your family rooms.

  1026. In the places

  1027. where you encounter

  1028. people that you hate.

1029. Or people that hate you.

  1030. Imagine how this crowd

  1031. would have received

  1032. the words of Jesus

  1033. as they're being challenged

  1034. to love their enemies.

  1035. These are the poor

  1036. and the lowly.

1037. Maybe they've been thrown out

  1038. by their families,

  1039. deemed as too sickly,

1040. too challenging to care for.

  1041. These are the people

  1042. who maybe have been

  1043. looked down upon

  1044. their whole lives

  1045. by the Pharisees

  1046. and self-righteousness.

  1047. Been told that they're

1048. inferior in the eyes of God.

  1049. Maybe they're thinking

  1050. about the Romans

  1051. who occupied their streets

  1052. and dominated them

  1053. with an iron will.

1054. Or maybe the tax collectors

  1055. who cheated them

1056. and put more and more money

  1057. into the Romans' pockets.

  1058. These are the people

  1059. that came to mind.

1060. Who is it that comes

  1061. to mind for you?

1062. Who is it in your life

  1063. that God is bringing

1064. to your mind right now

  1065. as He's challenging

  1066. all of us

  1067. to love our enemies?

  1068. Who do you hate?

  1069. Let's be honest.

  1070. Who do you hate?

1071. Or maybe who are you

  1072. simply so indifferent toward

  1073. that you never even

  1074. considered them

  1075. as someone that God

  1076. wanted you to love?

  1077. You never considered them

  1078. as someone that God

1079. wanted you to pray for

  1080. and actively work

  1081. for their well-being

  1082. because you didn't even

  1083. have time of day

  1084. to hate them.

  1085. They might as well

  1086. be non-existent to you.

  1087. Who is that person

  1088. to you?

1089. In what ways is God

  1090. wanting to enlarge

  1091. our hearts?

  1092. To mold them

  1093. to be more like

  1094. the heart of Jesus?

  1095. Because Jesus says

1096. if we only love our family

  1097. and our friends,

  1098. we aren't living

  1099. in the supernatural,

  1100. world-transforming love

  1101. of Christ's kingdom,

1102. but only in the natural love

  1103. that simply preserves

  1104. our world's

  1105. broken status quo.

  1106. Verse 32,

  1107. if you love those

  1108. who love you,

1109. what credit is that to you?

  1110. Even sinners love

  1111. those who love them.

1112. And if you do good

1113. to those who are good

  1114. to you,

1115. what credit is that to you?

  1116. Even sinners do that.

1117. And if you lend to those

  1118. from whom you expect

  1119. repayment,

1120. what credit is that to you?

  1121. Even sinners lend

  1122. to sinners,

  1123. expecting to be repaid

  1124. in full.

  1125. But love your enemies,

  1126. do good to them,

  1127. and lend to them

  1128. without expecting

  1129. to get anything back.

  1130. Then your reward

  1131. will be great.

  1132. And,

  1133. listen to this,

  1134. and you will be

1135. children of the Most High

  1136. because He is kind

  1137. to the ungrateful

  1138. and the wicked.

  1139. You see,

  1140. when we love,

  1141. especially when we love

  1142. our enemies

  1143. and those who don't

  1144. or can't repay

  1145. or even acknowledge

  1146. our love toward them,

  1147. that is when

  1148. we are most human.

  1149. And that is when

1150. we are most like God.

  1151. That is when

  1152. we are most like

  1153. our Father,

  1154. closely identifying

  1155. with Him

  1156. as His image bearers,

  1157. as His children.

  1158. It's when we

  1159. are being merciful

  1160. just as our Father

  1161. is merciful.

  1162. That is His heart.

1163. And that is His heart

1164. for who He wants us

  1165. to be.

  1166. In this world

  1167. that says that mercy

  1168. is unnatural

  1169. and even contrary

  1170. to justice,

1171. when we live in mercy,

1172. when we live in Jesus'

  1173. upside-down kingdom

  1174. as if it were

  1175. the right-side-up

  1176. way to live,

  1177. we are illustrating

  1178. and sharing God's

  1179. supernatural love

  1180. and exercising

  1181. our highest calling

  1182. as His children.

  1183. We are being

  1184. our truest

  1185. and most righteous

  1186. selves in the presence

  1187. of God

  1188. as He intended.

  1189. And listen,

  1190. this is not saying

  1191. just be a doormat,

  1192. let people just

  1193. walk all over you.

  1194. This will look differently

  1195. in people's personal lives

  1196. and there are lots

  1197. of different applications

1198. of this in corporate context,

  1199. communal context,

  1200. at the state level,

  1201. at national levels,

  1202. and unfortunately,

  1203. you know,

  1204. we don't have time

  1205. to talk about

  1206. political theology

  1207. or, you know,

  1208. a theology of passivism

  1209. or just war theory

  1210. or anything like that

  1211. today,

  1212. but,

  1213. listen,

  1214. we can get into

  1215. these complex particulars.

1216. We can talk about those,

  1217. we can distract ourselves

  1218. with those,

  1219. we can talk about

  1220. just war theory

  1221. and passivism

  1222. and self-defense,

1223. and we can let ourselves

  1224. get distracted

  1225. by all these complex

  1226. applications of this passage,

  1227. or,

  1228. or we can admit

  1229. that whatever loving

1230. our enemies might look like,

1231. none of us has arrived

  1232. in doing that.

  1233. None of us.

  1234. Like,

  1235. whatever you think

1236. about what this looks like

  1237. and how to concretely,

  1238. practically apply

  1239. Jesus' words

1240. in the most complex situations,

  1241. what is absolutely clear

1242. is that we're to love

  1243. our enemies

  1244. with a clear conscience

  1245. before God

  1246. and with sacrificial

  1247. selflessness.

  1248. the question

1249. that will most honor God

1250. in response to this teaching

  1251. this morning

  1252. is not,

  1253. when is self-defense okay?

  1254. And when,

  1255. you know,

  1256. how does this work

  1257. for whole nations?

1258. How far can they go

  1259. preemptively in self-defense?

  1260. No,

1261. the question that will most

  1262. honor God

1263. in response to Jesus' teaching here

  1264. is,

1265. in the eyes of the Lord,

1266. am I loving my enemies

  1267. with my heart

  1268. and with my hands?

  1269. Am I acting

  1270. for the good

  1271. and the best interests

  1272. of the people

  1273. that I cannot stand?

  1274. Am I pursuing

  1275. their shalom?

  1276. Or am I acting

  1277. as if

  1278. they are beyond redemption?

1279. There are only two ways.

  1280. You either believe

  1281. that they

  1282. are beyond redemption

  1283. or you are acting

  1284. in love

  1285. for your enemies.

1286. And this is a word for us.

1287. When we are so tempted

  1288. to believe

  1289. that so many people

  1290. and institutions

  1291. and things

  1292. in this world

  1293. are beyond redemption

  1294. and when we are

  1295. so tempted

  1296. to categorize others

  1297. as deplorable

  1298. and forever enemies

  1299. and always wrong

  1300. and without a trace

1301. of the image of God

  1302. in them.

1303. But what if we had

  1304. the eyes of Jesus?

1305. What if we had eyes

1306. to see as Jesus saw?

  1307. Eyes for the poor,

  1308. eyes for the hungry,

  1309. eyes for the weeping,

  1310. eyes for the hated,

1311. and eyes for our most

  1312. vile enemies?

1313. Or if we can't even

  1314. think of these enemies,

1315. what if we had eyes

  1316. for the people

  1317. who are practically

  1318. and virtually invisible

  1319. to us?

  1320. You know,

  1321. something that's

  1322. super interesting to me

  1323. is that these two

  1324. famous radical teachings

  1325. from Jesus

  1326. in the abstract

  1327. as ideas,

  1328. as ideals,

  1329. man,

  1330. people love Jesus'

  1331. teaching about this,

  1332. right?

  1333. People love these

  1334. teachings from Jesus.

  1335. Most people love

1336. this idea of the underdog.

  1337. They love this idea

1338. of blessed are the poor

  1339. and the hungry

  1340. and the excluded.

1341. I love that they can be

  1342. part of the kingdom.

  1343. Most people,

  1344. even atheists,

  1345. love the idea

  1346. of loving our enemies.

  1347. They would condemn

  1348. religious people like us

  1349. for doing the opposite.

  1350. They condemn us

  1351. by our own standards,

  1352. right?

  1353. Which they've just

  1354. kind of selectively

  1355. adopted for themselves.

1356. But if you look at the way

1357. most of us human beings

  1358. concretely and practically

1359. live and arrange our lives

  1360. and express our values,

  1361. none of us,

  1362. even us Christians

  1363. who preach this,

  1364. none of us lives

  1365. as though Jesus' words

  1366. were good and true

  1367. and good news

  1368. for the world.

  1369. Very few of us

  1370. practically

  1371. and functionally

  1372. believe

  1373. Jesus

  1374. when he said,

  1375. blessed are you

  1376. who are poor

  1377. or that loving

  1378. our enemies

  1379. is a good way

  1380. to go about living

  1381. in this dangerous world.

  1382. Most of us,

  1383. most of,

  1384. most all of us,

1385. we tend to see the world

  1386. how Cain saw it.

  1387. And we're all trying

  1388. to build our cities,

  1389. build up our numbers,

  1390. wield various techniques

  1391. and technologies

  1392. to prolong our survival

  1393. with no regard

1394. for how it affects others

  1395. because that's our vision

  1396. of the world

  1397. right side up.

  1398. But what if Jesus'

  1399. seemingly upside down kingdom

  1400. is actually truer

  1401. and more righteous,

  1402. a better vision

  1403. of the world?

  1404. My question for you

  1405. is don't you want

  1406. that to be true?

  1407. Don't you believe

  1408. it's better?

  1409. Can you believe

  1410. it's better?

  1411. And might God's spirit

  1412. be challenging you

1413. to live as a citizen

  1414. in his righteous

  1415. and true kingdom

1416. even if it costs you

  1417. like it costed Jesus?

1418. You know, I get it.

  1419. It makes sense

  1420. to have trouble

  1421. with these radical teachings.

  1422. Blessed is the poor

  1423. is only true

  1424. if we can count

  1425. on a new economy

  1426. eventually coming.

  1427. Blessed are the hungry

  1428. is only true

1429. if a feast really is

  1430. on its way.

1431. Weeping can only be blessed

  1432. if we know

  1433. that every tear

  1434. will one day

  1435. be wiped away.

  1436. And blessed are you

  1437. when people speak badly

  1438. of you only

1439. if you can be sure

  1440. that there's gonna be

  1441. a final vindication

  1442. and justification.

  1443. These statements

  1444. by Jesus

1445. if they are not true

1446. if he is not Lord

  1447. they are wildly irresponsible

  1448. and he's a lunatic

  1449. or a liar

  1450. or you know

  1451. a con man

  1452. a wicked con man.

1453. So the question is though

  1454. is he?

  1455. Who is Jesus

  1456. to you?

1457. And can you see him

  1458. as the God

  1459. that he's revealed

  1460. himself to be

  1461. to us

  1462. in the scriptures?

  1463. As the man

  1464. he came to be

  1465. sent from heaven.

1466. If we don't have eyes

  1467. to see that

  1468. blessed are the poor

  1469. and that we should

  1470. love our enemies

  1471. it's because we don't

  1472. have eyes

  1473. to see Jesus.

  1474. Jesus was poor

  1475. born in a manger

  1476. Jesus was hungry

  1477. in the wilderness

  1478. Jesus wept

  1479. for Lazarus

  1480. and Jerusalem

  1481. and Jesus was hated

  1482. and excluded

  1483. and mistreated

1484. as the son of God

  1485. who stood for

  1486. a different set

  1487. of kingdom values.

  1488. but is he not

  1489. also

  1490. the most blessed

  1491. one we've ever

  1492. seen?

1493. The one who for the

  1494. joy set before him

  1495. endured the cross

1496. for us and out of

  1497. love for his father

  1498. to save the world

  1499. do we not believe

  1500. that he is risen

  1501. in power

  1502. and joy

  1503. and glory

  1504. and do we not

  1505. see the beauty

1506. of how he is the

  1507. embodiment

  1508. of God's love

  1509. for enemies?

  1510. For while we were

  1511. still weak

  1512. Christ died

  1513. for the ungodly

  1514. for no one

  1515. scarcely

  1516. for one will scarcely

  1517. die for a righteous

  1518. person

  1519. though perhaps

  1520. for a good person

  1521. one would dare

  1522. to die

  1523. but God

  1524. demonstrates his love

  1525. for us in Jesus

  1526. in that while we

  1527. were yet sinners

  1528. Christ died

  1529. for us

1530. he gave up his cloak

1531. he gave up his tunic

  1532. even his seamless

  1533. undergarment

  1534. he was stripped

  1535. naked by his enemies

  1536. to save his enemies

  1537. father forgive them

  1538. he cried

  1539. Jesus sought the good

  1540. of those who sought

  1541. his destruction

  1542. and death

  1543. and he wants to

  1544. raise up citizens

  1545. who will do

  1546. the same

1547. even if it costs us

1548. even if it costs us

  1549. in the courts

  1550. of the temporary

  1551. judges of this world

  1552. so might God

  1553. be calling us

  1554. to be citizens

  1555. of Christ's kingdom

  1556. and aliens

  1557. in the empires

  1558. of this world

  1559. do you have eyes

  1560. to see

  1561. as King Jesus

  1562. sees

  1563. whether you're

  1564. the poor

  1565. or the rich

  1566. whether you're

  1567. the hater

  1568. or the hated

  1569. or maybe you're

  1570. both

  1571. right

  1572. God wants you

1573. to see what he sees

  1574. and he wants you

1575. to hear what his son

1576. has to say to you

  1577. so if you're here

  1578. today

  1579. for those of you

  1580. who are here

  1581. and feeling down

  1582. and out

  1583. poor

  1584. and hungry

  1585. and you're feeding

  1586. on your own tears

  1587. and you're either

  1588. detested by those

  1589. whose opinions

  1590. really seem to matter

1591. or they have no idea

  1592. who you are

  1593. and they don't even

  1594. care to know

1595. maybe this is a word

  1596. for you

  1597. I love how

  1598. Pastor Tyler Staten

  1599. says

  1600. Jesus has this habit

  1601. everywhere he goes

  1602. of picking out

  1603. the objectively

  1604. least likely person

  1605. and saying

  1606. my kingdom

  1607. belongs

  1608. to you

  1609. might this be

  1610. God's word

  1611. to you today

  1612. in your shame

  1613. and in your sense

  1614. of worthlessness

  1615. and unworthiness

  1616. and insignificance

  1617. might Jesus

  1618. be crying out

  1619. to you

  1620. my kingdom

  1621. belongs

  1622. to you

  1623. to people

  1624. just like you

  1625. Jesus' blessed

  1626. statements here

  1627. are a word

  1628. of welcome

  1629. and promise

  1630. you are welcome

  1631. into the kingdom

  1632. and I promise you

1633. that you can belong here

  1634. apart from your achievements

1635. apart from any of the

  1636. achievements

  1637. that you thought

  1638. you needed

  1639. to get

  1640. to the table

1641. so if you're here today

  1642. and you feel

  1643. unaccomplished

  1644. and unimportant

  1645. virtually invisible

  1646. if you feel like

  1647. you have nothing

  1648. to offer

  1649. and far more

  1650. need

  1651. than contribution

  1652. Jesus' word

  1653. to people like you

  1654. is that the kingdom

  1655. can be yours

  1656. too

  1657. if you just come

  1658. close to him

1659. you'll seek to touch him

  1660. like the people

  1661. at the sermon

  1662. on the plane

  1663. there's a seat

  1664. for you

  1665. at his table

  1666. the place

  1667. of highest

  1668. honor

  1669. even when all

  1670. the other seats

  1671. of power

  1672. and privilege

  1673. in this world

  1674. seem off limits

  1675. to you

  1676. there's a better

  1677. seat for you

  1678. at Jesus' table

  1679. but now

  1680. maybe some of you

  1681. are the very ones

  1682. sitting at these

  1683. privileged seats

  1684. in the world

  1685. you're at the top

  1686. of your industries

  1687. your workplace ladders

  1688. you're the highest performers

  1689. you've got the biggest

  1690. bank accounts

  1691. you've got the most

  1692. accomplishments

  1693. the most acclaim

  1694. and affirmation

  1695. from all your peers

  1696. well thank God

  1697. for your success

  1698. sure

  1699. for sure

  1700. but have you also

  1701. considered the value

  1702. and worth

  1703. of all your accomplishments

  1704. and attainments

  1705. in the light

  1706. of God's kingdom

  1707. in the light

  1708. of Jesus'

  1709. radically

  1710. alternative economy

  1711. in which the poor

  1712. are blessed

  1713. might Jesus

  1714. be calling you

  1715. to reassess

  1716. and recalibrate

  1717. your value system

  1718. to better match

  1719. his own

  1720. might you

  1721. live out

  1722. blessed are the poor

  1723. woe is the rich

  1724. in your workplace

  1725. in your spheres

  1726. of influence

  1727. do you live

  1728. to bless the poor

  1729. as Jesus did

  1730. are the poor

  1731. flocking to you

  1732. is your presence

  1733. in your community

  1734. a sign

  1735. of the healing

  1736. and compassionate

  1737. kingdom of God

  1738. I'm not just

  1739. speaking to you

  1740. I'm speaking

  1741. to myself

  1742. do we use

  1743. our resources

  1744. and our abundance

  1745. and whatever gifts

  1746. God has given us

  1747. to bear witness

  1748. to Jesus'

  1749. way better kingdom

  1750. and its alternative

  1751. set of values

  1752. Jesus' kingdom

  1753. is unlike

  1754. any other kingdom

  1755. and the lives

  1756. of its citizens

  1757. will seem radically

  1758. upside down

  1759. and backward

  1760. to the watching world

  1761. but this is precisely

  1762. this is precisely

  1763. how we will win

  1764. people over

  1765. not through power

  1766. but through love

  1767. you know

  1768. I can't verify this

  1769. with 100% certainty

  1770. but a handful

  1771. of historians

  1772. have quoted

  1773. Napoleon Bonaparte

  1774. by quoting

  1775. something that he said

  1776. to the effect of

  1777. Alexander

  1778. Caesar

  1779. Charlemagne

  1780. and I

  1781. have founded

  1782. great empires

  1783. but on what

  1784. did we rest

  1785. the creation

  1786. of our genius

  1787. upon force

  1788. Jesus Christ

  1789. alone

  1790. founded his empire

  1791. upon love

  1792. and at this hour

  1793. millions of men

  1794. would die for him

  1795. it's really

  1796. an undeniable fact

  1797. the love of God

  1798. displayed in Jesus Christ

  1799. crucified

  1800. and risen

  1801. to put sin

  1802. to death

  1803. and death

  1804. to death

  1805. though neither

  1806. that sin

  1807. nor that death

  1808. belonged to him

  1809. this is what

  1810. underlies all

  1811. of our longings

  1812. to believe

  1813. in the power

  1814. and the beauty

  1815. of sacrificial

  1816. unconditional love

  1817. even for our enemies

  1818. it's only the love

  1819. of Jesus

  1820. that can

  1821. transform this world

  1822. that has transformed

  1823. this world

  1824. that will

  1825. transform

  1826. this world

  1827. you know

  1828. in the 4th century

  1829. the anti-Christian

  1830. emperor of Rome

  1831. Julian

  1832. he tried to win

  1833. Rome back

  1834. to the pagan gods

  1835. but he angrily

  1836. marveled

  1837. at the Christians

  1838. and their

  1839. ethic of love

  1840. and he wrote this

  1841. for it is disgraceful

  1842. that when the

  1843. impious Galileans

  1844. the Christians

  1845. support not only

  1846. their own poor

  1847. but ours as well

  1848. all men see

  1849. that our people

  1850. lack aid from us

  1851. and the Christian

  1852. origin scholar

  1853. Gerald Sitzer writes

  1854. that Julian

  1855. complained about

  1856. exactly this kind

  1857. of Christian service

  1858. in spite of the

  1859. loftiness of Julian's

  1860. position and the

  1861. vast resources

  1862. of his empire

  1863. he could not

  1864. motivate his

  1865. priests to follow

  1866. the same way

  1867. of life

  1868. nor replicate

  1869. the church's

  1870. ministry to the

  1871. needy

  1872. but the difference

  1873. went deeper

  1874. than ethics

  1875. Christians worshipped

  1876. a God who loved

  1877. humanity in and

  1878. through his son

  1879. Jesus Christ

  1880. this Jesus

  1881. son of God

  1882. lord of lords

  1883. king of kings

  1884. had given his

  1885. life as a ransom

  1886. for many

  1887. and this is the

  1888. power that would

  1889. change the world

  1890. the love of Christ

  1891. in our lives

  1892. compelling us

  1893. to love like he

  1894. did as a light

  1895. in the darkness

  1896. let's pray

  1897. oh lord would you

  1898. make us that kind

  1899. of loving community

  1900. to the glory of

  1901. Christ and for the

  1902. good of this

  1903. broken world

  1904. we pray in Jesus

  1905. name

  1906. amen
