  5. Good morning.

  6. My name is Joan Benton.

  7. I participate in a community group for Kensington and El Cerrito, go to Women, Reading Women,

  8. and help once a month with CC Kids.

  9. We're reading today from Luke chapter 8, verses 22 through 38, as printed in your liturgy.

    Luke 8:22–38

  10. One day, Jesus said to his disciples, let's go over to the other side of the lake.

  11. So they got into a boat and set out.

  12. As they sailed, he fell asleep.

  13. A squall came down on the lake so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

  14. The disciples went and woke him, saying, Master, Master, we're going to drown.

  15. He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters.

  16. The storm subsided, and all was calm.

  17. Where is your faith?

  18. He asked.

  19. His disciples, and in fear and amazement, they asked one another,

  20. Who is this?

  21. He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.

  22. They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.

  23. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town.

  24. For a long time, this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

  25. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice,

  26. What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?

  27. I beg you, don't torture me.

  28. For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man.

  29. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard,

  30. he had broken the chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

  31. Jesus asked him, What is your name?

  32. Legion, he replied, because many demons had gone into him.

  33. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the abyss.

  34. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.

  35. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs,

  36. and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

  37. When those tending the pigs saw what had happened,

  38. they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,

  39. and the people went out to see what had happened.

  40. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out,

  41. sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed, and in his right mind.

  42. And they were afraid.

  43. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.

  44. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them

  45. because they were overcome with fear.

  46. So he got into the boat and left.

  47. The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him,

  48. but Jesus sent him away, saying,

  49. Return home and tell how much God has done for you.

  50. So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

  51. And this is the gospel of the Lord.

  52. Praise to you, O Christ.

  53. Good morning, Christ Church.

  54. It's Super Bowl Sunday, so we're going to talk about demons, right?

  55. That's what you were expecting, right?

  56. You know, most secular people in the Western world

  57. don't believe that demons exist.

  58. And that, I think, is a luxury.

  59. It's a very privileged thing to be able to believe.

  60. This man in Luke 8 doesn't have that luxury and that privilege, though,

  61. because he can't deny the darkness that's come into his life, right?

  62. He's oppressed by some pretty dark powers.

  63. He's in pretty deep distress and misery.

  64. And what's amazing about the story is that Jesus puts him back in his right mind.

  65. And he sends him out on this new mission.

  66. In fact, we read in verse 39, Jesus says,

  67. Return home and tell how much God has done for you.

  68. Go home to your people.

  69. Go home to your city.

  70. He tells us that this man had an extended family, right?

  71. He had an old community of friends.

  72. He had a workplace.

  73. He had a city.

  74. He had this place where he used to be rooted and he used to be grounded.

  75. He used to belong.

  76. He used to be known and loved by people.

  77. And somehow, we don't know how, but he subtly and slowly came under the power of the darkness.

  78. And I admit that it's hard for me to see myself in this man.

  79. And maybe you feel that way when you read it as well.

  80. But it's not hard for me to see myself in earlier stages of this man, in the earlier stages of his decline.

  81. For example, you know, when I look at the hurts and the habits and hang-ups in my own life,

  82. and I think about the way that those hurts can easily turn into compulsions,

  83. when I think about the way those habits can so easily turn into addictions,

  84. when I think about the way that my hang-ups can so easily become obsessions,

  85. when I think about the heavy burden it is to walk around with the fear and the guilt and the shame

  86. that those things can produce in life,

  87. when I think about all the feelings that I've had in my life of emotional instability

  88. and mental confusion and spiritual agitation that just sort of accumulates over time,

  89. it's actually not that hard for me to relate to this man in some earlier stages of his life.

  90. We don't know what kind of trauma he experienced.

  91. We don't know what kind of abuse he endured or maybe some violent act from another person or group of people.

  92. But hell has somehow been unleashed in his life.

  93. And in him, I think we get a picture of how the dark powers oppress us

  94. and how they oppress our society,

  95. how they try to strip us of our identity,

  96. strip us of our sense of belonging, our sense of meaning and purpose in this life,

  97. and slowly but surely dehumanize us.

  98. Now, how does Luke describe this man's condition?

  99. He says in verse 27,

  100. And then down in verse 29, it says,

  101. Many times the demon had seized him,

  102. and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard,

  103. he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

  104. Driven by the demon into solitary places.

  105. You're probably aware that the U.S. Surgeon General has declared an epidemic of loneliness,

  106. an epidemic of alienation and isolation in our society right now.

  107. This guy's been driven out.

  108. He's living in the tombs,

  109. which means he identifies more as a dead person than as a living person.

  110. And he's become such a menace to himself.

  111. He's become such a danger to himself and to other people

  112. that he's been chained like an animal.

  113. And these are the human solutions.

  114. These are the material solutions to his spiritual problems,

  115. and it's not helping him at all.

  116. It's not helping the problems that he has in his soul at all.

  117. The Gospel of Mark, when it tells this story in Mark chapter 5,

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  118. it says,

  119. And, you know, we look at the dramatic rise of anxiety and depression

  120. over the last 10 to 15 years among Gen Z.

  121. And that anxiety and depression is so often expressed in forms of cutting,

  122. forms of self-harm and suicidal ideation.

  123. And this man, that's what he's doing.

  124. He's cutting himself and he's crying out,

  125. probably saying,

  126. Somebody help me.

  127. Somebody come and fill this unbearable void.

  128. Somebody stop the pain.

  129. Somebody, please come deliver me from my distress and from my misery.

  130. I hope we don't write this man off,

  131. because I think more people are living and feeling like this man than we realize.

  132. And maybe even that's some of us here today,

  133. that our humanity feels like it's being beaten out of us from the inside.

  134. We barely even know our name anymore.

  135. We're not sure who we are.

  136. We feel oppressed.

  137. We feel enslaved.

  138. We sense a lack of hope.

  139. Maybe that's you.

  140. Maybe it's somebody that you love very deeply.

  141. But I want us to know that Jesus very deliberately seeks and saves the lost.

  142. And he seeks and saves this lost man.

  143. Right?

  144. The same Jesus we talked about a few weeks ago in Luke 4,

  145. who in his first sermon, he said,

  146. You know what I've come to do?

  147. I've come to preach good news for the poor.

  148. I've come to release the captives.

  149. I've come to bring liberation to those who are oppressed.

  150. That same Jesus has just rebuked the wind and the waves

  151. and taken this chaotic storm and subdued it and made it calm.

  152. And now Jesus brings that same power, that same authority to this man

  153. to subdue and to calm the chaos of his soul.

  154. Right?

  155. The chaotic storm of his life.

  156. And so I want to take a look at this story in a deeper way,

  157. thinking about a few things together.

  158. First of all, what we see in this story is kingdoms and conflict.

  159. We also see a transformed mind,

  160. and we see a new mission and message.

  161. So we're going to look at this kingdoms and conflict,

  162. a transformed mind,

  163. and a new mission and message.

  164. First of all, kingdoms and conflict.

  165. Jesus is intentionally crossing a boundary in the story.

  166. He's crossing a boundary into Gentile territory,

  167. and he goes to basically the most unclean place

  168. that a Jew could think to go.

  169. Right?

  170. He enters into these Gentile pagan cities

  171. that are full of idols and decadence.

  172. Jesus is, you know, walking through these pig farms

  173. that are the furthest cry from being kosher,

  174. you could imagine.

  175. That pork is being raised to feed

  176. the occupying Roman legions, their armies.

  177. This man is hanging out in tombs

  178. with dead bodies and skeletons.

  179. He's filled with evil spirits and demons.

  180. Why, Jesus, of all the places you could be,

  181. why would you want to be here?

  182. Jesus, of course, often shows up

  183. in places where he's not supposed to be.

  184. Right?

  185. Jesus deliberately crosses boundaries

  186. into places that are considered inappropriate.

  187. And what happens when Jesus does that?

  188. What happens when Jesus shows up in dark places?

  189. Well, what we see in this story

  190. is that there's a power encounter

  191. of enormous proportions.

  192. There's a confrontation

  193. between these two opposing powers,

  194. these two opposing kingdoms.

  195. And I want you to know

  196. that it's not like Star Wars.

  197. It's not like Star Wars

  198. where there's this unending conflict

  199. between the dark side

  200. and the true force.

  201. Right?

  202. These two equal and opposite powers

  203. that really depend on each other.

  204. They depend on being balanced

  205. with each other.

  206. Right?

  207. The hate and fear of the dark side,

  208. the love and hope

  209. of the true force.

  210. Both of them are essential.

  211. Both of them need to be there in tension

  212. and balance, push and pull,

  213. and yin and yang.

  214. That's not the New Testament.

  215. If you pay very close attention

  216. to this story,

  217. this demon is attempting

  218. to gain ascendancy over Jesus.

  219. And then Jesus is very intentionally

  220. triumphing over the demons.

  221. Right?

  222. Jesus is not content

  223. for the kingdom of God

  224. to be in balance

  225. with the kingdom of darkness.

  226. Jesus wants to conquer

  227. the kingdom of darkness.

  228. Jesus wants to win a victory,

  229. a decisive victory

  230. over the kingdom of darkness.

  231. And so what does Jesus' presence

  232. and His power provoke here?

  233. It says in verse 28

  234. that when He saw Jesus,

  235. He cried out and fell at His feet,

  236. shouting at the top of His voice,

  237. What do you want with me, Jesus,

  238. Son of the Most High God?

  239. I beg you, don't torture me.

  240. See, I think there's a conflict

  241. within this man

  242. between the desire of His true self

  243. to be in the irresistible presence

  244. of Jesus

  245. and to fall at the feet of Jesus,

  246. which is what we were made to do.

  247. And there's a conflict

  248. with this other part of Himself,

  249. this darkness inside of Himself

  250. that is resisting Jesus,

  251. that's fearing Jesus,

  252. that's assaulting Jesus with questions,

  253. is saying to Jesus,

  254. What do you want with me?

  255. And why won't you leave me alone?

  256. You know, what's interesting to me

  257. is that these demons know Jesus, right?

  258. That they, in fact,

  259. identify Jesus in the exact opposite way

  260. that most secular people do today, right?

  261. Most secular people say,

  262. Well, Jesus is merely human.

  263. Jesus is an extraordinary teacher.

  264. He's a liberation theologian.

  265. Jesus is a social reformer.

  266. He's a peasant revolutionary.

  267. Jesus is the exemplar

  268. of heroic progressivism, right?

  269. Any group of people,

  270. any person can remake Jesus

  271. in their own image.

  272. But the demons know

  273. who Jesus actually is.

  274. And what do they say?

  275. They say,

  276. Jesus, you are the Son

  277. of the Most High God.

  278. And when they're saying that,

  279. they're not trying to honor Jesus.

  280. They're trying to subdue Jesus, right?

  281. Because that's how magic works.

  282. That's how witchcraft works.

  283. If you manipulate the name of the person,

  284. then you get power over the person.

  285. You bind the person.

  286. You control the person.

  287. And Jesus says,

  288. Hey, I know what you're trying to do.

  289. And he says,

  290. Two can actually play at that game.

  291. And so what does Jesus do?

  292. He says in verse 30,

  293. Well, what is your name?

  294. And he says,

  295. Legion,

  296. he replied,

  297. Because many demons

  298. had gone into him.

  299. Of course,

  300. a legion is a regiment

  301. of about 6,000 soldiers.

  302. And if a legion of the Roman army,

  303. you know,

  304. showed up into town,

  305. it was this big,

  306. powerful,

  307. overwhelming force.

  308. It's just absolutely impossible

  309. to defeat.

  310. And when this man says,

  311. My name is Legion,

  312. what he's saying is,

  313. I'm an army.

  314. I'm a kingdom of dark forces,

  315. and it's resisting Jesus.

  316. It's intimidating Jesus.

  317. And all the while,

  318. this man is just raging.

  319. He's this chaotic storm

  320. in front of Jesus.

  321. And Jesus,

  322. this whole time,

  323. is just completely calm.

  324. Completely calm.

  325. And Jesus is like,

  326. Okay,

  327. you're a legion.

  328. You're 6,000 soldiers.

  329. That's all you brought?

  330. Is that going to be,

  331. is that going to be enough?

  332. And see,

  333. verse 31,

  334. it says,

  335. They begged Jesus repeatedly

  336. not to order them

  337. to go into the abyss.

  338. You see,

  339. on the one hand,

  340. this kingdom of darkness,

  341. it postures itself

  342. as strong and tough

  343. and intimidating,

  344. this legion.

  345. And then on the other hand,

  346. it's begging Jesus,

  347. Please don't torture us.

  348. Please don't send us

  349. into the abyss

  350. where we deserve to go

  351. and where you have

  352. the power to send us.

  353. And you see,

  354. at the most basic level,

  355. the reason we see

  356. this kingdom of darkness

  357. so aggressively coming out

  358. into the open

  359. in the three years

  360. of Jesus' public ministry

  361. is that they know

  362. their time of ruling

  363. God's good creation

  364. is coming to an end.

  365. They know that

  366. the judgment day

  367. is just around the corner

  368. where God is going

  369. to judge them

  370. and send them

  371. and all their dehumanizing

  372. forces into the abyss,

  373. into this unfathomable depth

  374. from which they can

  375. never return.

  376. And you notice that

  377. it's not Jesus

  378. that's theologizing about this,

  379. it's actually the demons

  380. that are the ones

  381. who are talking about

  382. the final destiny

  383. of all those

  384. who resist God

  385. and oppose God.

  386. And why are they doing this?

  387. Why are they freaking out

  388. in the presence of Jesus?

  389. Because they know

  390. they're in the presence

  391. of the Son

  392. of the Most High God.

  393. they're trembling

  394. before the one

  395. whom God has appointed

  396. to be the judge

  397. of all the world

  398. with justice.

  399. And how does Jesus

  400. respond to their begging?

  401. How does Jesus respond

  402. to their repeated requests?

  403. Well, this speaks,

  404. I think,

  405. to one of the three

  406. biggest theological questions

  407. that pastors get.

  408. Number one,

  409. we get asked the question,

  410. what happens when I die?

  411. Number two,

  412. we get asked the question,

  413. how can I be saved?

  414. And number three,

  415. we get asked the question,

  416. what is up with these pigs?

  417. Right?

  418. It's like one of the biggest things

  419. that I'm sure

  420. was on your mind

  421. when you woke up this morning.

  422. What's up with the pigs?

  423. And some of you

  424. read this story

  425. and you're like,

  426. I love animals so much

  427. and this poor herd

  428. of 2,000 pigs

  429. drowning in the sea

  430. really makes me sad.

  431. And some of us,

  432. you're like,

  433. I love business so much

  434. and when I see

  435. all this money

  436. and all this opportunity

  437. and all this potential

  438. just go down the drain,

  439. that makes me sad.

  440. And others of us,

  441. we love food so much,

  442. we're like,

  443. all the meat,

  444. all the bacon

  445. and all the ribs,

  446. what a waste.

  447. But the pigs

  448. are not Jesus' suggestion,

  449. the pigs are the demon's idea

  450. and the demons know

  451. that they're so powerless

  452. before Jesus

  453. that without his permission

  454. they can't even touch

  455. one single little piglet.

  456. And so Jesus gives them permission

  457. to do to the pigs

  458. what they want to do

  459. to this man

  460. and what they want to do

  461. to all of us

  462. and that is to drive them

  463. into death and destruction,

  464. to drive them away

  465. from the abundant life

  466. that God intends.

  467. That's what the kingdom

  468. of dark powers

  469. wants to do to human beings.

  470. But Jesus won't let it happen

  471. to this man.

  472. Jesus liberates this man

  473. from all of the oppression

  474. and all the bondage

  475. of the darkness

  476. and Jesus causes

  477. the kingdom of God

  478. to come erupting

  479. into his life.

  480. And notice that

  481. when Jesus brings salvation

  482. and it's just a messy business

  483. with all the pigs

  484. and everything,

  485. when Jesus exercises his power

  486. he doesn't even roll up his sleeves.

  487. Jesus is not breaking a sweat.

  488. Jesus is not trying hard

  489. in this moment.

  490. Jesus is not calling on

  491. a higher power

  492. because Jesus is the higher power.

  493. Jesus is an infinitely greater power.

  494. This isn't even a fair fight.

  495. It's no contest.

  496. This whole army,

  497. this whole kingdom,

  498. this whole legion of darkness

  499. just self-destructs

  500. in the presence of Jesus

  501. and it's no contest whatsoever.

  502. This man who had been woefully oppressed

  503. by demonic powers

  504. is somehow now wonderfully released

  505. by the power of Jesus.

  506. So my question for you today is

  507. what is that big

  508. and overwhelming thing

  509. in your life

  510. that you're bringing to Jesus today?

  511. what's that thing

  512. that's completely controlling you

  513. and dominating your life?

  514. When you think about your friends

  515. and your neighbors

  516. and your coworkers

  517. and your family members,

  518. what are the big issues?

  519. What are the big problems

  520. that they're struggling with?

  521. And the question for us today is

  522. do you believe that Jesus has the power

  523. and the authority

  524. to handle that?

  525. Is His kingdom stronger

  526. than the kingdom of darkness

  527. that seeks to dominate

  528. and control

  529. and rule over us

  530. and our world?

  531. You see what's interesting

  532. is these people

  533. in this region of the Gerasenes,

  534. they saw the power of Jesus

  535. but it says they were afraid of it.

  536. They were uncomfortable

  537. with Jesus' power

  538. and so in verse 37,

  539. and then all the people

  540. of the region of the Gerasenes

  541. asked Jesus to leave them

  542. because they were overcome

  543. with fear.

  544. They were afraid

  545. that inviting more

  546. of the kingdom of God

  547. into their lives,

  548. inviting more of the power

  549. of Jesus into their lives

  550. would kind of mess things up

  551. and so they'd said,

  552. Jesus,

  553. would you please go away from us?

  554. And tragically,

  555. they don't realize

  556. how poor and powerless

  557. they're gonna be

  558. if Jesus actually does leave them.

  559. They don't realize

  560. that they're rejecting

  561. the greatest opportunity

  562. of their lives

  563. to welcome Jesus,

  564. the liberator,

  565. Jesus,

  566. the deliverer,

  567. Jesus,

  568. the savior.

  569. I guess my question

  570. for us today is,

  571. do we see,

  572. when we look at our lives,

  573. when we look at our world,

  574. do we see these two kingdoms

  575. in conflict?

  576. There's no third alternative

  577. between these two kingdoms.

  578. You either are wanting

  579. to live in that one kingdom

  580. that's familiar

  581. and comfortable

  582. yet dehumanizing,

  583. or you're wanting

  584. to live in this kingdom

  585. that comes with power

  586. and healing

  587. and freedom

  588. and salvation

  589. that Jesus brings.

  590. Those are your options.

  591. Kingdoms in conflict,

  592. that's where we're living

  593. our lives.

  594. But secondly,

  595. I want us to see

  596. not just kingdoms

  597. in conflict,

  598. but I want to see

  599. this guy with a transformed mind.

  600. A transformed mind.

  601. Now,

  602. where does Jesus get

  603. his authority

  604. to reclaim

  605. and to save this man?

  606. What's interesting is

  607. at the end of the gospel,

  608. we see Jesus and this man

  609. actually changing places,

  610. right?

  611. When we come to Holy Week,

  612. when we come to Good Friday,

  613. we'll see the Son

  614. of the Most High God

  615. being stripped of his clothes

  616. and being naked

  617. like this man.

  618. We'll see Jesus

  619. being bound with chains

  620. like this man.

  621. We'll see Jesus

  622. being cut and bleeding.

  623. We'll see Jesus

  624. crying out on the cross

  625. in agony.

  626. We'll see Jesus

  627. being driven

  628. into the tombs.

  629. And why does Jesus do that?

  630. Because he came

  631. to bear the darkness.

  632. He came to bear away

  633. this man's misery

  634. on the cross.

  635. He came to absorb it all

  636. into himself.

  637. And the resurrection

  638. of Jesus

  639. will be a signal to us,

  640. it is a signal to us

  641. that somehow,

  642. some way,

  643. Jesus managed

  644. to destroy evil

  645. and to destroy death

  646. without destroying

  647. any of us.

  648. See,

  649. the crucified

  650. yet risen Jesus

  651. came to conquer

  652. over sin and death

  653. and hell and the devil

  654. in order that he might

  655. give us eternal life,

  656. in order that he might

  657. give us abundant life.

  658. And that's what we see

  659. in this man

  660. in verse 34.

  661. It says,

  662. when those tending the pigs

  663. saw what had happened,

  664. they ran off

  665. and reported this

  666. in the town

  667. and the countryside.

  668. And the people went out

  669. to see what had happened.

  670. And when they came to Jesus,

  671. they found the man

  672. from whom the demons

  673. had gone out,

  674. sitting at Jesus' feet,

  675. dressed and in his right mind,

  676. and they were afraid.

  677. Here's a man

  678. who had been

  679. a chaotic storm,

  680. raging,

  681. wild,

  682. untamable.

  683. Neither men

  684. nor chains

  685. could constrain him.

  686. No one was strong enough

  687. to subdue him.

  688. And everybody was asking,

  689. who can save this man?

  690. Who can save us?

  691. But what does the Son

  692. of the Most High God do?

  693. It says that when Jesus

  694. comes in his presence

  695. and his power,

  696. there's a total reversal

  697. in this man's life.

  698. First of all,

  699. he's liberated

  700. from the occupying power

  701. and the demons

  702. are completely gone.

  703. Secondly,

  704. it says that he's sitting

  705. at Jesus' feet,

  706. which is the place

  707. where a disciple sits.

  708. It's the place

  709. where a disciple

  710. learns the word of God

  711. and the way of God

  712. and the will of God.

  713. Thirdly,

  714. it says that he's clothed,

  715. which means that he has

  716. a new dignity.

  717. He has a new identity.

  718. He has a new name.

  719. He has a new sense

  720. of belonging.

  721. He has a new life.

  722. And thirdly,

  723. it says that he's

  724. in his right mind.

  725. He's been given

  726. a sober mind.

  727. He's been given

  728. a self-controlled mind.

  729. He has the mind

  730. of Christ himself

  731. being formed in him.

  732. And so it says

  733. in verse 38,

  734. the man from whom

  735. the demons had gone out

  736. begged to go

  737. with Jesus.

  738. You see,

  739. earlier when he had been

  740. under the influence

  741. of these dark powers,

  742. what did the man say

  743. to Jesus?

  744. He said,

  745. what do you want with me,

  746. son of the most high God?

  747. Please go away from me.

  748. Please leave me alone.

  749. But now that he's been

  750. set free,

  751. now that he's a disciple

  752. at the feet of Jesus,

  753. now that he's in his right mind,

  754. what does he beg Jesus

  755. for in his prayers now?

  756. He says,

  757. Jesus,

  758. please let me go with you

  759. wherever you're going.

  760. And that, I think,

  761. is the mark

  762. of a transformed mind.

  763. It's the mark

  764. of a true disciple

  765. that you talk to Jesus,

  766. that you want to go

  767. with Jesus,

  768. that you have

  769. a personal relationship

  770. with Jesus,

  771. that you have a new bond

  772. and a new union

  773. and a new attachment

  774. to Jesus.

  775. So you say,

  776. I want to follow you.

  777. I want to learn from you.

  778. I want to obey you.

  779. I cannot get close enough

  780. to you.

  781. And I think that's

  782. an acid test

  783. of our own discipleship,

  784. that when we wake up

  785. in the morning,

  786. are we saying to Jesus,

  787. Jesus,

  788. I want to go with you today.

  789. I want to be with you today.

  790. Whatever that means,

  791. I'm in with you.

  792. And of course,

  793. one of the first lessons

  794. we have to learn

  795. as disciples of Jesus

  796. is that Jesus doesn't always

  797. give us what we want.

  798. Right?

  799. He doesn't give us

  800. what we ask for.

  801. He doesn't answer our prayers

  802. the way that we want Him to.

  803. He very often redirects

  804. our requests

  805. because He has something

  806. better in mind,

  807. which is what happens here.

  808. The man from whom

  809. the demons had gone out

  810. begged to go with Jesus,

  811. but Jesus sent him away

  812. saying,

  813. return home

  814. and tell how much

  815. God has done for you.

  816. So the man went away

  817. and told all over town

  818. how much Jesus

  819. had done for him.

  820. And that's the relational

  821. dynamic of discipleship.

  822. It's not that we

  823. issue commands to Jesus

  824. and He submits to us.

  825. It's that He issues

  826. the commands

  827. and we submit to Him.

  828. Right?

  829. He tells us what to do

  830. and we obey.

  831. That's what it,

  832. when we say Jesus is Lord,

  833. that's what that means.

  834. But it's not an oppressive lordship.

  835. It's a very liberating lordship.

  836. It's a freeing lordship

  837. because it means

  838. I no longer have to carry

  839. the burden

  840. of being the Lord

  841. of my life anymore.

  842. I no longer have to figure out

  843. what I'm doing

  844. and where I'm going.

  845. What a relief.

  846. Where does Jesus send this man?

  847. Jesus sends this man home.

  848. And what that tells us

  849. is that Jesus not only heals us

  850. mentally and physically,

  851. He not only forgives us

  852. spiritually and morally,

  853. but Jesus restores us

  854. socially and vocationally.

  855. This man had been alienated

  856. from his home.

  857. This man had been driven

  858. away from his home.

  859. This man is now sent back

  860. to his home as an agent

  861. of reconciliation.

  862. That's what Jesus wants to do.

  863. He wants to put us back

  864. in family life.

  865. He wants to put us back

  866. in friendships.

  867. He wants to put us back

  868. in a community

  869. where we were made

  870. to have a new identity

  871. and a new belonging

  872. and a new meaning

  873. and a new purpose.

  874. That's what discipleship is.

  875. And because this man

  876. has a transformed mind,

  877. when Jesus says,

  878. no, I have a better plan

  879. for your life

  880. than your plan for your life,

  881. how does he respond?

  882. He says, great.

  883. Awesome.

  884. And I guess that's my question

  885. for us is,

  886. do you have this transformed mind?

  887. Are you in your right mind

  888. where what you want to do

  889. is sit at the feet of Jesus,

  890. go with Jesus,

  891. talk to Jesus,

  892. let Jesus redefine

  893. your plans for your life

  894. and say, awesome.

  895. What I want us to think about today

  896. is that we live

  897. in the midst of these kingdoms

  898. and conflict

  899. and that what it means

  900. to follow Jesus

  901. and become a disciple of Jesus

  902. is that you have a new mind,

  903. a transformed mind

  904. and mindset.

  905. But then finally,

  906. that you have a new mission

  907. and a new message.

  908. That as a disciple,

  909. you've been given

  910. a new mission

  911. with a new message.

  912. And we saw this

  913. when in Luke chapter 5,

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  914. when Peter encountered

  915. the power of Jesus.

  916. And Jesus immediately

  917. gave Peter this new mission

  918. and he said,

  919. from now on, Peter,

  920. you are going to fish

  921. for people.

  922. From now on, Peter,

  923. you're going to share

  924. my mission

  925. to catch people

  926. for the kingdom of God.

  927. And this is the task

  928. of every Christian disciple.

  929. This is the task

  930. of every Christian church

  931. is to become a vehicle

  932. through which God's

  933. redemptive power

  934. can go pouring

  935. into the lives

  936. of other people.

  937. And what Jesus did

  938. for Peter,

  939. Jesus also does

  940. for this guy.

  941. This most unlikely guy

  942. is turned into

  943. an ambassador for Jesus.

  944. Having been reconciled

  945. to God through Jesus,

  946. he's now sent out

  947. with a new message

  948. and a new mission

  949. of reconciliation.

  950. And it says this again

  951. in verse 39,

  952. return home

  953. and tell how much

  954. God has done for you.

  955. So the man went away

  956. and told all over town

  957. how much Jesus

  958. had done for him.

  959. Isn't this amazing?

  960. The first person

  961. that Jesus sends

  962. to share his mission

  963. in Gentile territory

  964. is this guy.

  965. Super broken

  966. and yet incredibly

  967. delivered.

  968. And he's told by Jesus

  969. just go and share

  970. the gospel

  971. and make disciples.

  972. And Jesus

  973. thinks it's a wise idea.

  974. He just sends him out

  975. without a class

  976. on evangelism.

  977. He doesn't have

  978. a master's in theology.

  979. He doesn't know

  980. anything about apologetics.

  981. All he has

  982. is a transformed mind.

  983. All he has

  984. is his own story

  985. of God's grace

  986. and healing.

  987. All he has

  988. is two ears

  989. with which he can listen

  990. to people

  991. as they pour out

  992. their pain to him

  993. and their loneliness

  994. and their longings

  995. and their questions

  996. and their concerns.

  997. All he has

  998. is a heart

  999. to pray for people

  1000. and just engage them

  1001. in conversation

  1002. and Jesus says

  1003. that's enough.

  1004. That's enough.

1005. I want you to return home

  1006. and tell your people

  1007. how much God

  1008. has done for you.

  1009. Go tell them

1010. that the power of God

1011. and the grace of God

  1012. is on the move.

  1013. Go tell them

1014. that the kingdom of God

  1015. is coming

  1016. from heaven to earth

  1017. right now.

1018. And what does the man do?

1019. He tells all over town

  1020. not how much God

  1021. had done for him.

  1022. He tells how much

1023. Jesus had done for him.

  1024. Did you notice that?

  1025. Does he misunderstand

  1026. the mission?

  1027. Is he misunderstanding

  1028. the message?

  1029. No, he understands

  1030. it perfectly well

  1031. that Jesus

  1032. he's got the lesson.

1033. Jesus is not merely human

  1034. he's the son

1035. of the most high God.

  1036. So when God

  1037. the Father acts

1038. he acts through his son.

  1039. And when God

  1040. the Son acts

  1041. God the Father

  1042. is working.

  1043. What Jesus does

  1044. God does.

1045. And if we are going

  1046. to tell people

  1047. about the wonderful

  1048. works of God

1049. we have to be talking

  1050. about Jesus.

  1051. We have to say

  1052. the name Jesus.

  1053. Because Jesus

  1054. is the one

  1055. through whom

  1056. the only true God

  1057. is working out

  1058. his saving purposes

  1059. in this world.

  1060. And this is how

  1061. disciples on mission

  1062. speak

  1063. the message

  1064. that Jesus

  1065. has given.

1066. And so he goes home

  1067. he goes home

  1068. knowing that God

  1069. is already at work

  1070. in the lives

  1071. of the people

  1072. back there

  1073. where Jesus

  1074. has sent him.

  1075. He goes home

  1076. knowing that

  1077. it's Jesus' power

  1078. and not his own

  1079. that's the basis

  1080. of his missionary

  1081. activity.

  1082. He goes home

  1083. knowing that God's

  1084. work through Jesus

  1085. is the heart

  1086. of the message.

  1087. And does everyone

  1088. accept his message

  1089. when he gets home?

  1090. No.

  1091. All the people

  1092. in this region

  1093. have already told

  1094. Jesus to his face

  1095. please go home.

  1096. Please leave us.

  1097. I'm sure this guy

  1098. was just as rejected

  1099. just as ignored

  1100. just as neglected

  1101. as Jesus was.

  1102. But I also imagine

  1103. that there were

  1104. a handful of people

  1105. some people of peace

  1106. that God had prepared

  1107. because why would

  1108. Jesus have sent him

  1109. if there weren't

  1110. people there

  1111. to receive the message?

  1112. People that were open

  1113. people that were ready

  1114. people that were ripe

  1115. people that were low

  1116. hanging fruit

  1117. people that were primed

  1118. to say

  1119. man this thing

  1120. you're telling me

  1121. about Jesus

  1122. sounds pretty amazing.

  1123. You know back

  1124. in November

  1125. we invited you

  1126. to begin praying

  1127. for three people

  1128. that you would like

  1129. to see begin

  1130. to explore the faith

  1131. and just to pray

  1132. on a daily basis

  1133. that God's kingdom

  1134. would come breaking

  1135. through into their lives.

  1136. and I want to

  1137. just remind us

  1138. of that.

1139. I want to encourage us

  1140. that you don't need

  1141. a story as extreme

  1142. and dramatic

  1143. as intense

  1144. as this guy.

  1145. All you need

  1146. to engage

  1147. in the mission

  1148. and message of Jesus

  1149. is just a heart

  1150. to pray.

  1151. All you need

  1152. is just a willingness

  1153. to invite somebody

  1154. to coffee

  1155. or to your table

  1156. for a meal.

  1157. All you need

  1158. is just ears

1159. to listen to their story.

  1160. All you need

  1161. is just a willingness

  1162. to share what Jesus

1163. has done in your life

1164. and just to sit back

  1165. and watch God work.

  1166. Some of us

  1167. have people

  1168. who are ready

  1169. to be invited

  1170. to Alpha

  1171. over the coming weeks

  1172. where we're just

  1173. asking them

  1174. to come share

  1175. a meal with us,

  1176. come and engage

  1177. in some video-based

  1178. discussions with us,

  1179. come and explore

  1180. their questions

  1181. about life

  1182. and meaning

  1183. and God

  1184. and faith.

  1185. Some of us

  1186. have people

  1187. who are saying,

  1188. you know,

1189. thank you but not yet

1190. and what they really need

  1191. is just more

  1192. Christ-like hospitality.

  1193. They just need someone

  1194. to lovingly listen

  1195. to their doubts

  1196. and to their questions.

  1197. Someone who can

  1198. compassionately engage

  1199. in their loneliness

  1200. and their pain.

  1201. Someone who can

  1202. just patiently walk

  1203. with them

  1204. as God is working

  1205. to soften them

  1206. and open up

  1207. their hearts to Him.

  1208. And we actually

  1209. don't have any idea

1210. what God wants to do

  1211. in the lives

1212. of any of the people

  1213. around us.

  1214. We don't know

1215. when He wants to work

1216. or how He wants to work

  1217. or where God wants

1218. to work in their lives

1219. but here's what we do know

  1220. and this is from

  1221. the Apostle Paul

  1222. 1 Timothy chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  1223. God our Savior

  1224. wants all people

  1225. to be saved

1226. and come to a knowledge

  1227. of the truth.

1228. For there is one God

  1229. and one mediator

  1230. between God

  1231. and mankind,

  1232. the man Christ Jesus

  1233. who gave Himself

  1234. as a ransom

  1235. for all people.

  1236. And that's why

  1237. Jesus says,

  1238. go tell how much

1239. God has done for you.

1240. So the man went away

1241. and told all over town

  1242. how much Jesus

  1243. had done for Him.

  1244. Friends,

  1245. Jesus is sending

  1246. us just like

  1247. He sent that man.

1248. Jesus is saying to us,

  1249. go tell how much

  1250. I've done for you.

  1251. Go tell how great

  1252. is the grace,

1253. how great is the mercy,

1254. how great is the power,

1255. how great is the healing,

1256. how great is the love

  1257. that's come pouring

  1258. into your life

  1259. through me.

1260. Are we up for that mission?

  1261. Are we down

  1262. with that message?

  1263. I hope so.

1264. In the name of God,

  1265. the Father,

  1266. the Son,

  1267. and the Holy Spirit.

  1268. Amen.

  1269. Amen.
