  5. Good morning.

  6. I'm Julie Brown.

  7. And I am part of the El Cerrito Kensington Group and, when I can, Women Reading Women.

  8. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 11, verses 11 to 26, as printed

    Luke 11:11–26

  9. in your liturgy.

  10. A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

  11. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?

  12. Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

  13. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much

  14. more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

  15. Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute.

  16. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.

  17. But some of them said, by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.

  18. Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

  19. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined,

  20. and a house divided against itself will fall.

  21. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand?

  22. I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

  23. Now, if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out?

  24. So then, they will be your judges.

  25. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  26. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.

  27. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

  28. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  29. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.

  30. Then it says, I will return to the house I left.

  31. When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.

  32. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there,

  33. and the final condition of that person is worse than the first.

  34. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  35. Praise to you, O Christ.

  36. Good morning, Christ Church.

  37. It's very good to be back here with my Christ Church family.

  38. I missed you while I was traveling the last two Sundays visiting family and friends,

  39. and really glad to have come back to begin the season of Lent with you all here on Ash Wednesday the other night,

  40. and especially to also launch our Alpha course on Thursday night.

  41. We had about 30-plus people, 30-plus guests who were there to just be in a season of spiritual seeking,

  42. of exploring the Christian faith, people who are new Christians looking to build their life on a foundation of faith.

  43. So we're so glad to be in this season of Lent, this season of our Alpha course.

  44. And, you know, each year from Christmas to Easter, we preach through one of the four gospels in the New Testament,

  45. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  46. And inevitably, when we do that, we run up against some of the hard sayings of Jesus that we struggle to understand.

  47. And a lot of ink has been spilled trying to make sense about these most strange and enigmatic and perplexing things that Jesus ever said.

  48. And what you just heard read is certainly one of those sayings.

  49. It's hard to get.

  50. But I liken the hard sayings of Jesus to hard candy.

  51. You know, you don't want to, like, immediately bite on it.

  52. But you just kind of want to put it in your mouth and start working it around and let it slowly kind of melt a little bit.

  53. So that's what we're going to try to do in this sermon today.

  54. But notice how our passage begins in verse 14.

  55. It says,

  56. Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute.

  57. And when the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.

  58. So here's this dark power, and it's dehumanizing this human being.

  59. And how is it dehumanizing this man?

  60. It's diminishing the image of God in this man by stealing and killing and destroying his unique ability.

  61. The unique ability that we human beings have been given by God to speak.

  62. Right?

  63. This amazing gift that we have to use language to relate to one another and to communicate with each other,

  64. to articulate things that are good and true and beautiful.

  65. That gift has been diminished.

  66. It's been taken away.

  67. And Jesus is restoring that to this man.

  68. And yet his critics say in verse 15, it says,

  69. And Jesus both agrees and disagrees with that statement because he says in verse 18,

  70. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand?

  71. I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

  72. And Jesus is assuming that there are dark powers in this world,

  73. that those dark powers form a kind of hierarchy, an imperial hierarchy,

  74. that they're organized as a kingdom against the kingdom of God and against the image of God,

  75. and that Satan is the prince that's ruling over the top of that hierarchy that's oppressing human beings.

  76. And Jesus says this in verse 20.

  77. He says,

  78. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, by the spirit of God, by the power and authority of God,

  79. then the kingdom of God has come among you.

  80. It's an amazing statement of Jesus' life and his mission,

  81. that he's stepped out of eternity and into time,

  82. that he's come down from heaven to earth and taken on human flesh in order to do just this,

  83. in order to expel this dark kingdom from the world,

  84. and to bring in the gracious rule and the liberating reign of the kingdom of God.

  85. So I want to just kind of slowly work on this hard saying,

  86. this hard candy of Jesus under three headings this morning.

  87. I want to talk about the reality of dark powers

  88. and the presence of a stronger power,

  89. and then thirdly, the indwelling of a holy power.

  90. So the reality of dark powers, the presence of a stronger power,

  91. and the indwelling of a holy power.

  92. When we think about the reality of dark powers,

  93. some of you say,

  94. Well, wait a minute.

  95. You really want me to believe this?

  96. When we look at the gospel and we find Jesus as a prophet who's speaking truth to power,

  97. we say,

  98. I like that Jesus.

  99. Or when we find Jesus acting like a social revolutionary,

  100. and he's empowering women,

  101. and he's including the outcasts,

  102. and he's lifting up the poor,

  103. we say,

  104. Yes, that's a Jesus I can really get down with.

  105. But then we find Jesus talking about Satan,

  106. and working as an exorcist,

  107. and driving out demons.

  108. This is just bizarre.

  109. It's absolutely shocking.

  110. And some of you say,

  111. Well, I'm not sure I can accept this,

  112. because I'm educated.

  113. You know, I went to university.

  114. I have an undergraduate degree.

  115. I have a graduate degree.

  116. I read the New York Times.

  117. I read the Wall Street Journal.

  118. I have a computer in my pocket with access to the internet.

  119. I have chat GPT on my phone as a co-intelligence.

  120. When you think about the last 150 years of human history,

  121. all the progress we've made in education,

  122. all the advances we've made in economics,

  123. all the breakthroughs we've made in science and technology and medicine,

  124. do you really expect me to buy into all this demon stuff?

  125. Right?

  126. Do you realize how primitive and how backward

  127. this first century talk about evil spirits and dark powers sounds?

  128. And I want to say,

  129. Yes, I do realize how strange it sounds,

  130. which is why I'm taking the time to talk about it.

  131. For many, many complex reasons,

  132. late modern, secular age, post-Christian people in the Western world

  133. with their enlightened, materialistic vision of reality

  134. struggle to believe in malevolent spiritual beings.

  135. And if that is your paradigm today,

  136. I would like to ask you to consider this,

  137. that the policy of the devil

  138. is to persuade you that there is no devil.

  139. Or to put it a different way,

  140. the devil's most clever deception is to convince you

  141. that he's not there.

  142. And Andrew and I, at least once a year,

  143. we trot out this quote.

  144. You know what I'm about to quote?

  145. Delbanco, right?

  146. Okay, Andrew Delbanco.

  147. He's a professor at Columbia University.

  148. He's a secular Jewish professor in humanities.

  149. And he wrote a book in 1995

  150. called The Death of Satan,

  151. How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil.

  152. And this is so relevant to us.

  153. This is why we quote it at least once a year.

  154. Here it is.

  155. A gulf, he says,

  156. a gulf has opened in our culture

  157. between the visibility of evil

  158. and the intellectual resources to cope with it.

  159. We have jettisoned in the West

  160. the idea of cosmic evil

  161. or transcendent evil

  162. or supernatural evil.

  163. We don't believe in it.

  164. In fact, we even,

  165. we don't even like to use the word evil

  166. because it implies moral absolutes

  167. and value judgments.

  168. So we use medical terms.

  169. We talk about dysfunction.

  170. We talk about pathology.

  171. We don't use moral terminology.

  172. But, Delbanco says,

  173. he says,

  174. as the 20th century has gone on,

  175. it's gotten harder and harder

  176. to say that holocausts

  177. and ethnic cleansings

  178. and serial killings

  179. are just bad psychological

  180. and sociological adjustments.

  181. What we said 150 years ago

  182. that all evil has natural causes,

  183. has scientific causes,

  184. is wearing thin.

  185. I find this is a fascinating thesis.

  186. He goes on.

  187. He says,

  188. the repertoire of evil

  189. has never been richer,

  190. yet never have our responses

  191. been so weak.

  192. We have no language

  193. for connecting our inner lives

  194. with the horrors

  195. that pass before our eyes

  196. in the outer world.

  197. And he concludes the book.

  198. Delbanco says this

  199. at the end of the book.

  200. He says,

  201. my driving motive

  202. in writing this book

  203. has been the conviction

  204. that if evil,

  205. with all its insidious complexity,

  206. escapes the reach

  207. of our imagination,

  208. it will have established

  209. dominion over us.

  210. If we no longer

  211. have an imagination

  212. for evil,

  213. it will have established

  214. dominion over us.

  215. What he's saying

  216. is that if you've been educated

  217. and socialized

  218. into a particular

  219. plausibility structure,

  220. into a particular paradigm

  221. that denies dark powers

  222. in this world,

  223. then you are particularly vulnerable

  224. because you don't have

  225. the intellectual resources

  226. and the imagination

  227. and the language

  228. to deal with the world

  229. that we actually live in.

  230. When I was traveling

  231. this last week,

  232. going from California

  233. to Georgia

  234. to New York

  235. and back here,

  236. I took as my companion

  237. the Lord of the Rings.

  238. I haven't read this book

  239. in like 20 years,

  240. so I decided

  241. to start rereading it.

  242. And I was reminded

  243. of Tolkien's brilliance,

  244. because he's got this chapter,

  245. chapter two of the book,

  246. it's the critical chapter

  247. in the whole thing,

  248. it's called The Shadow,

  249. The Shadow of the Past.

  250. And in chapter one,

  251. he depicts the easy,

  252. comfortable lives

  253. of the hobbits

  254. in the Shire.

  255. But then in chapter two,

  256. he reveals that

  257. actually all the hobbits

  258. in the Shire

  259. are completely oblivious

  260. to what's really going on.

  261. They're oblivious

  262. to the whispers

  263. of this enemy

  264. on this eastern land

  265. of Mordor.

  266. And the mood

  267. in the Shire

  268. is one of just

  269. complacent ignorance

  270. as these great evils

  271. grow and become

  272. like this ominous

  273. sort of disquieting shadow.

  274. And it's only

  275. the most far-seeing,

  276. it's only the most wise people

  277. in Middle-earth,

  278. like Gandalf,

  279. the wizard,

  280. who are able

  281. to discern

  282. the true contours

  283. of the danger

  284. that they face.

  285. And so Gandalf,

  286. what does he do?

  287. He comes to the Shire

  288. to counsel Frodo,

  289. to warn Frodo,

  290. and to kind of wake him up

  291. to this malignant shadow

  292. in this metastasizing darkness.

  293. And I want to suggest

  294. that that's what Jesus

  295. is doing for us here.

  296. What Gandalf does for Frodo,

  297. Jesus is doing for us here.

  298. He's revealing to us

  299. that something dark

  300. and something deadly

  301. is at work in the world

  302. that we disbelieve

  303. or we take lightly

  304. at our own peril.

  305. So that when we read

  306. these words from Jesus

  307. in verse 20,

  308. if I drive out demons

  309. by the finger of God,

  310. then the kingdom of God

  311. has come upon you.

  312. What do we do with that?

  313. Right?

  314. Where does that fit

  315. in our vision of reality

  316. in the world?

  317. Do you trust yourself?

  318. Do you trust

  319. your plausibility structures,

  320. your cultural paradigms,

  321. your educational experience,

  322. your formative institutions,

  323. which have told you

  324. there is no such thing

  325. as demons?

  326. There is no such thing

  327. as a battle or a struggle

  328. between the kingdom of Satan

  329. and the kingdom of God.

  330. Or,

  331. will you trust

  332. the Son of God

  333. who's speaking here,

  334. who made the world?

  335. Right?

  336. The Son of God

  337. who took all the risk

  338. upon Himself

  339. to enter into this world.

  340. The Son of God

  341. who laid down His life

  342. and died for this world.

  343. The Son of God

  344. who rose again

  345. to authenticate

  346. His authority

  347. to interpret His world.

  348. When you become a Christian,

  349. when you say,

  350. Jesus is my Savior

  351. and Jesus is my Lord,

  352. what happens is that

  353. you're baptized

  354. into Jesus' vision

  355. of the world.

  356. You're baptized

  357. into His interpretation

  358. of the world

  359. where He says,

  360. this is the fundamental conflict.

  361. This is the fundamental thing

  362. that's happening

  363. in your life

  364. and in the life

  365. of this world

  366. that I've come to engage.

  367. The Apostle Paul

  368. says it this way

  369. in Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  370. He says,

  371. for our struggle

  372. is not against flesh and blood

  373. but against the rulers,

  374. against the authorities,

  375. against the powers

  376. of this dark world

  377. and against the spiritual forces

  378. of evil

  379. in the heavenly realms.

  380. And I think Jesus

  381. is trying to get us

  382. to take seriously

  383. the reality

  384. of the dark powers

  385. that are at work

  386. in the world.

  387. So that's point number one.

  388. Point number two

  389. is not just about

  390. the reality

  391. of the dark powers

  392. but secondly,

  393. the presence

  394. of a stronger power.

  395. The presence

  396. of a stronger power.

  397. Jesus could not be more clear

  398. that Satan's not only real

  399. but that he's strong.

  400. And He says it explicitly

  401. in verse 21.

  402. He says,

  403. when a strong man

  404. fully armed

  405. guards his own house,

  406. his possessions

  407. are safe.

  408. Jesus is saying there

  409. that Satan is strong.

  410. Right?

  411. He's mighty.

  412. He's powerful.

  413. Jesus calls him

  414. in other places

  415. the prince of this world,

  416. the ruler of this world.

  417. Right?

  418. He's fully armed

  419. with defensive armor,

  420. with offensive weapons.

  421. And it says

  422. he has a house.

  423. That word house

  424. is a palace.

  425. It's a castle

  426. of this dark warlord,

  427. this heavily fortified

  428. military installation

  429. where Jesus is describing

  430. this evil

  431. and strong prince

  432. who takes possession

  433. of people

  434. and he puts them

  435. in his castle prison,

  436. his castle dungeon,

  437. and there

  438. his unholy spirits

  439. are holding people

  440. there in bondage.

  441. Right?

  442. They're oppressed

  443. and they're dominated

  444. by the will

  445. of this strong man.

  446. And Jesus says

  447. He has people

  448. in His possession.

  449. And how do people

  450. come to be

  451. in His possession?

  452. Well,

  453. Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  454. again,

  455. the Apostle Paul

  456. says this,

  457. he says,

  458. put on the full armor

  459. of God

  460. so that you can

  461. take your stand

  462. against the devil's

  463. schemes.

  464. Right?

  465. The devil

  466. has schemes

  467. by which he takes

  468. possession of people.

  469. And what are those schemes?

  470. Well,

  471. you can trace

  472. sort of a golden thread

  473. all the way back

  474. to the beginning

  475. of the Scriptures

  476. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  477. where the scheming serpent

  478. comes into paradise,

  479. he comes into

  480. the garden of God

  481. questioning God's Word.

  482. Right?

  483. He's saying,

  484. did God really say?

  485. And he begins

  486. to twist

  487. and distort the truth.

  488. He begins

  489. to sow seeds

  490. of doubt

  491. and disbelief

  492. in the heart

  493. of human beings.

  494. Is God really for you?

  495. Isn't God

  496. kind of holding out

  497. on you?

  498. And you can trace

  499. that thread

  500. of his schemes

  501. all the way

  502. into the New Testament

  503. where the Apostle Paul

  504. says in 2 Corinthians 11,

  505. he says,

  506. Satan disguises himself

  507. as an angel

  508. of light.

  509. Satan disguises himself

  510. as an angel

  511. of light.

  512. In other words,

  513. his strategy

  514. is deception.

  515. And if you read

  516. the letters

  517. of the New Testament,

  518. it's very clear

  519. that this dark warlord

  520. is at work

  521. particularly

  522. among the people

  523. of God.

  524. Right?

  525. Because he wants

  526. to distort

  527. the truth

  528. of the gospel.

  529. He wants to add

  530. to the gospel.

  531. He wants to take away

  532. from the gospel.

  533. He wants to lead

  534. God's people

  535. into this ditch

  536. of legalism

  537. over here,

  538. into this ditch

  539. of licentiousness

  540. over here.

  541. He wants to lead

  542. us into conflict

  543. with one another

  544. or compromise

  545. with the world.

  546. Right?

  547. He wants to disrupt

  548. our relationship

  549. with God.

  550. He wants to disrupt

  551. our relationship

  552. with each other.

  553. He wants to discredit

  554. our life

  555. and our message.

  556. He's got schemes

  557. that need to be resisted.

  558. And the question is,

  559. do we take Jesus seriously

  560. when he talks about

  561. this strong man,

  562. that he actually

  563. is highly intelligent,

  564. that he's immensely powerful,

  565. that he's utterly

  566. unscrupulous,

  567. that he's a formidable

  568. adversary

  569. with deceptive schemes

  570. that we must take

  571. seriously?

  572. How else do we

  573. explain the brokenness

  574. of this world,

  575. right,

  576. that's in bondage

  577. to forces of sin

  578. and disease

  579. and injustice

  580. and poverty

  581. and hunger

  582. and alienation?

  583. How else do we

  584. describe the eruption

  585. of anger

  586. and fear

  587. and violence

  588. and death

  589. in this world

  590. unless we take

  591. Jesus' words

  592. about the strong man

  593. seriously?

  594. But what's amazing

  595. about this passage

  596. is that Jesus

  597. is not only telling us

  598. about the strong man,

  599. but he has the audacity

  600. to say,

  601. I'm stronger

  602. than the strong man.

  603. Right,

  604. he says in verse 22,

  605. but when someone

  606. stronger attacks

  607. and overpowers him,

  608. he takes away

  609. the armor

  610. in which the man

  611. trusted

  612. and divides up

  613. his plunder.

  614. You guys still awake?

  615. All right.

  616. I know we had one less

  617. hour of sleep last night,

  618. so I'm just making sure.

  619. Jesus says,

  620. my life

  621. and my mission

  622. is a full frontal

  623. assault

  624. on the strong man.

  625. Right,

  626. when I touch,

  627. when you read the gospels

  628. and you see Jesus

  629. touching people's bodies

  630. with the power of God

  631. and you see people

  632. teaching people

  633. and regenerating their souls

  634. by the truth of God,

  635. Jesus is saying,

  636. look,

  637. I'm attacking

  638. and overpowering

  639. the strong man.

  640. I'm dethroning Satan.

  641. I'm driving out

  642. his kingdom.

  643. I'm repossessing

  644. what God

  645. owns by right.

  646. I'm possessing them

  647. for the kingdom of God.

  648. What is amazing

  649. is the apostle Paul

  650. says this

  651. in Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2:14

  652. verse 14.

  653. He says,

  654. talking about Jesus' ministry

  655. and the climax

  656. of Jesus' ministry,

  657. he says,

  658. God has taken away

  659. our sin,

  660. our death,

  661. and our condemnation

  662. by nailing them

  663. to the cross.

  664. And he says,

  665. in having disarmed

  666. the dark powers

  667. and the authorities,

  668. God made a spectacle

  669. of them,

  670. triumphing over them

  671. by the cross.

  672. What Paul is saying there

  673. is that Jesus' cross

  674. is the decisive moment

  675. of his attack

  676. on the strong man.

  677. Right?

  678. On his cross,

  679. Jesus looks as if

  680. he's a helpless victim,

  681. but something actually

  682. much deeper

  683. is going on there,

  684. that on his cross,

  685. Jesus is attacking

  686. and overpowering

  687. and overcoming

  688. the strong man

  689. by sacrificial,

  690. self-giving love.

  691. Right?

  692. That on his cross,

  693. Jesus is actually

  694. disarming the dark powers.

  695. He's taking away

  696. the strong man's armor

  697. in which he trusted.

  698. And on his cross,

  699. Jesus is making

  700. a public spectacle

  701. of Satan

  702. and his dark kingdom.

  703. On his cross,

  704. Jesus is conquering

  705. over that kingdom

  706. of darkness

  707. and winning a victory

  708. for the kingdom of God.

  709. And Jesus says

  710. that he's dividing up

  711. the strong man's spoils.

  712. On his cross,

  713. Jesus is dividing up

  714. the strong man's plunder

  715. by reclaiming men

  716. and reclaiming women

  717. so that people can live

  718. in freedom again

  719. according to God's

  720. original design.

  721. And through his resurrection,

  722. Jesus is continuing

  723. this work

  724. of plundering

  725. the strong man's spoils.

  726. Right?

  727. He continues this work

  728. until he comes again

  729. to fully drive out

  730. the evil one

  731. from this world

  732. until he fully

  733. and finally sets up

  734. the kingdom of God

  735. on earth as it is in heaven.

  736. And so,

  737. what does this mean for us?

  738. What does it mean for you?

  739. It's a matter of

  740. utmost importance

  741. and urgency

  742. for you to know

  743. whether you're

  744. in the possession

  745. of the strong man

  746. or whether you belong

  747. to the stronger one

  748. who came to overtake

  749. and overpower

  750. and disarm

  751. and plunder

  752. the strong man.

  753. Right?

  754. The question for us is

  755. who do I belong to?

  756. Have I been transferred

  757. from one dominion

  758. into another dominion?

  759. From one possession

  760. into another possession?

  761. From one safekeeping

  762. into another safekeeping?

  763. Again,

  764. the Apostle Paul

  765. says this in Colossians 1.

  766. He says,

  767. for he,

  768. God,

  769. has rescued us

  770. from the dominion

  771. of darkness

  772. and brought us

  773. into the kingdom

  774. of the Son

  775. He loves.

  776. Is that how we see

  777. the world?

  778. Is that how we understand

  779. our lives?

  780. Third point

  781. is not just the reality

  782. of dark powers

  783. and not just the presence

  784. of a stronger power,

  785. but finally is to talk

  786. about the indwelling

  787. of a holy power.

  788. power.

  789. The indwelling

  790. of a holy power.

  791. And this is where

  792. I want to just look

  793. for a moment

  794. at the most particularly

  795. strange,

  796. at least for me,

  797. the most enigmatic

  798. and puzzling part

  799. of this text.

  800. And you're like,

  801. we haven't talked

  802. about that already.

  803. But one thing

  804. we haven't really

  805. looked at is

  806. where Jesus says

  807. in verses 19 to 20,

  808. He says,

  809. other people

  810. are driving out demons.

  811. Other Jews,

  812. other followers

  813. of the Pharisees,

  814. they're also

  815. driving out demons.

  816. And then He says

  817. in verses 24 to 26,

  818. He says that a demon

  819. leaves the house

  820. and then He comes back

  821. and He finds it swept

  822. and put in order,

  823. but it's empty

  824. and so He comes

  825. and occupies it

  826. with seven other

  827. more wicked demons

  828. than Himself

  829. and the situation

  830. is far worse

  831. than it was before.

  832. What in the world

  833. is going on there?

  834. Well, I think Jesus

  835. is suggesting that

  836. there are multiple ways

  837. to get symptom relief

  838. for our human misery.

  839. but to not really deal

  840. with underlying root causes.

  841. Right?

  842. He says, you know,

  843. other people are dealing

  844. with troubles

  845. and miseries

  846. and demons are,

  847. you know,

  848. taking off.

  849. But they're not really

  850. driving them out

  851. like I am

  852. by the finger of God

  853. and the Spirit of God

  854. and the power of God

  855. so that the kingdom

  856. of God is coming.

  857. They're giving symptom relief

  858. but they're not really

  859. bringing the kingdom of God,

  860. Jesus says.

  861. And what does that mean?

  862. It means that there's

  863. actually many different ways

  864. that we can change.

  865. There are many ways

  866. that we can get

  867. the power to change

  868. but there's only one way

  869. to change thoroughly

  870. and to change permanently.

  871. Right?

  872. Many of us have changed

  873. because we've looked

  874. to therapy

  875. and we've looked

  876. to self-help for change

  877. and that was good.

  878. We needed that.

  879. Others of us

  880. have looked to science

  881. and drugs

  882. and medicine

  883. for change

  884. and that was good.

  885. We needed that.

  886. Others of us

  887. have looked to education

  888. and knowledge

  889. for change

  890. and that was good.

  891. That helped.

  892. We needed that.

  893. All of these are good gifts

  894. of God's common grace

  895. in our lives.

  896. But I think this text

  897. challenges us

  898. not to be

  899. overly simplistic

  900. and overly reductionistic

  901. in the way

  902. that we approach

  903. human problems.

  904. Because obviously

  905. we're psychological

  906. and social beings.

  907. Obviously we're biological

  908. and physical beings.

  909. Obviously we're intellectual

  910. and rational beings.

  911. But what this text

  912. reminds us is that

  913. we are not only

  914. those things

  915. we are spiritual beings.

  916. And if we only deal

  917. at the superficial level

  918. of doing symptom relief

  919. in our life

  920. we're not going deep enough

  921. to deal with underlying

  922. root spiritual causes.

  923. It's possible

  924. Jesus says

  925. to use other powers

  926. to change.

  927. And we might be

  928. massively helped

  929. by emotional catharsis.

  930. We might be

  931. significantly helped

  932. by willpower

  933. and just sheer

  934. self-determination

  935. and self-discipline.

  936. We might be helped

  937. by some kind of

  938. support group.

  939. And one demon

  940. might say

  941. oh my goodness

  942. he's getting serious

  943. about his life

  944. I think I'm going to

  945. take off

  946. and leave his house

  947. for a while.

  948. And your house

  949. lo and behold

  950. is swept clean

  951. it's put in order.

  952. But if that's all

  953. you've done

  954. Jesus says

  955. if that's all

  956. you've done

  957. your house

  958. is swept clean

  959. and it's put in order

  960. but it's sitting vacant.

  961. It's sitting empty

  962. you're just inviting

  963. trouble.

  964. You're eventually

  965. going to attract

  966. vandals

  967. and invaders

  968. and squatters

  969. who are going to

  970. come and make

  971. things worse.

  972. If you're a kid

  973. and you ever

  974. discovered

  975. an abandoned house

  976. you know

  977. and there's glass

  978. in the window

  979. don't you just want

  980. to pick up a rock

  981. and throw it

  982. through the window?

  983. Was that just me?

  984. Jesus says

  985. an empty house

  986. is just asking for it.

  987. An empty house

  988. needs to be filled.

  989. An empty house

  990. needs a new

  991. and a holy power

  992. that keeps all

  993. those old

  994. and unholy spirits

  995. from coming back.

  996. I had a friend

  997. who I met

  998. in seminary

  999. and he became

  1000. a pastor

  1001. and he no longer

1002. is part of a church

  1003. no longer identifies

  1004. as a Christian

  1005. and he posted

  1006. on social media

  1007. recently

  1008. he said

  1009. these last three years

  1010. I've been in a state

  1011. of barely contained

  1012. panic.

  1013. Right?

  1014. I've not been sleeping

  1015. I've not been exercising

  1016. I've been pounding

  1017. ice cream

  1018. late at night

  1019. I've been binging TV

  1020. to distract myself

  1021. from my pain

  1022. I've been on four

  1023. different psychiatric

  1024. drugs

  1025. and I've often

  1026. wanted to just

  1027. go to sleep

  1028. and not wake up.

  1029. And he says

  1030. you know

  1031. the good news

  1032. is that my wife

  1033. and my kids

  1034. they rallied around me

  1035. and I restarted

  1036. exercising

  1037. and I got

  1038. on a clean diet

  1039. and I stayed sober

  1040. from alcohol

  1041. and I weaned myself

  1042. off this drug cocktail

  1043. and he's reporting

  1044. you know

  1045. I felt stuck

  1046. in despair

  1047. but now I'm happy

1048. and I have hope again

  1049. and I rejoice

  1050. with him

1051. that is such good news

  1052. his house

  1053. has been swept clean

  1054. his house

  1055. has been put

  1056. in order

  1057. but Jesus would say

  1058. the problem with that

  1059. is that your house

  1060. is still empty

  1061. your house

  1062. is vacant

  1063. there's nobody

  1064. in there

  1065. vandals

  1066. and invaders

  1067. and squatters

1068. are just going to come

  1069. and make things

  1070. worse for you

  1071. what does he need

1072. what does my friend need

  1073. what do I need

  1074. what do you need

  1075. Jesus says

  1076. we need a new

  1077. and a holy

  1078. and indwelling power

  1079. that's stronger

  1080. than all of those

  1081. dark powers

  1082. that can come

  1083. and fill

  1084. and occupy

  1085. our house

  1086. and our life

  1087. right

  1088. it's possible

  1089. to have your life

  1090. swept clean

  1091. and put in order

  1092. without the redeeming

  1093. presence of Jesus

  1094. and without the

  1095. regenerating power

  1096. of the Holy Spirit

  1097. it's possible

  1098. to engage

  1099. in a thousand

  1100. life hacks

  1101. to optimize

  1102. your life

  1103. maximally

  1104. but unless

  1105. the expulsion

  1106. and the removal

  1107. of dark

  1108. and dehumanizing

  1109. powers

  1110. is followed

  1111. by the filling

  1112. of your life

  1113. with the power

  1114. of the living God

  1115. you've not deeply

  1116. changed

  1117. your change

  1118. is only superficial

  1119. and temporary

  1120. you're just creating

  1121. a vacuum

  1122. inside of you

  1123. that can be filled

  1124. with more dark

  1125. powers

  1126. Jesus says

1127. if you want to change

  1128. thoroughly

1129. if you want to change

  1130. completely

1131. if you want to change

  1132. permanently

1133. you need to let me

  1134. move into your house

1135. you need to let me

  1136. take possession

1137. of all that you are

1138. and all that you have

  1139. you need one

  1140. stronger than the

  1141. strong man

1142. to come and take up

  1143. residence inside of you

  1144. right

  1145. you need the one

  1146. who drives out demons

1147. by the finger of God

1148. and who brings the kingdom

  1149. of God

  1150. to come

1151. and set up his kingdom

  1152. in your life

  1153. what you need

  1154. is the spirit

  1155. of him

  1156. who raised Christ

  1157. from the dead

  1158. to come and be

  1159. that indwelling

  1160. power

  1161. and that indwelling

  1162. presence inside of you

  1163. enabling you

  1164. to live

  1165. the faithful

  1166. and fruitful life

  1167. that God

  1168. created you to live

  1169. there are other

  1170. sources of power

  1171. there are other

  1172. means of help

  1173. that can deal

  1174. with this particular

  1175. sin

  1176. or that particular

  1177. trouble

  1178. or misery

  1179. or demon

  1180. but Jesus

  1181. the son of God

  1182. has conquered

  1183. over sin itself

  1184. and he's overcome

  1185. Satan

  1186. himself

  1187. and what he offers

  1188. you

  1189. and what he gives

  1190. you

  1191. is not deliverance

  1192. from this sin

  1193. or from that sin

  1194. or from this demon

  1195. or from that demon

1196. no what he gives you

  1197. is complete deliverance

  1198. what he's freeing you

  1199. from is all sin

  1200. what he's emancipating

  1201. you from is entirely

  1202. from the dominion

  1203. of Satan

  1204. what you need

  1205. is not a house

  1206. that's been swept

1207. clean and put in order

  1208. what you need

  1209. is a house

  1210. that's occupied

  1211. by the presence

  1212. of the living God

  1213. a house that's full

  1214. of Christ

  1215. through the power

  1216. of the Holy Spirit

  1217. you don't need

  1218. a power

  1219. that will make

  1220. your house

  1221. swept clean

  1222. and put in order

  1223. but leave you

  1224. exactly as you were

  1225. before

  1226. where now you just

  1227. have to fight

  1228. and struggle

  1229. to keep it clean

  1230. where you grow

  1231. tired and weary

  1232. to keep it

  1233. in good order

  1234. and all those

  1235. old troubles

  1236. and all those

  1237. miseries

  1238. you have to fight

  1239. to keep them away

  1240. what you need

  1241. is the power

  1242. of the living God

  1243. and your house

  1244. increasingly filled

  1245. by the presence

  1246. and the power

  1247. of the Holy Spirit

  1248. so friends

  1249. if you're not sure

  1250. what the season

  1251. of Lent

  1252. these next 40 days

  1253. is all about

1254. if you're not really sure

  1255. what to pray

1256. I want to point you

  1257. to this simple prayer

  1258. in verse 13

1259. and I'll close with this

  1260. Jesus says

  1261. if you then

  1262. though you are evil

  1263. know how to give

  1264. good gifts

  1265. to your children

  1266. how much more

  1267. will your Father

  1268. in Heaven

  1269. give the Holy Spirit

1270. to those who ask Him

1271. what I want to encourage

  1272. you to do

1273. over the next 40 days

1274. is just to ask God

  1275. to fill your house

1276. and to fill your life

  1277. with the Holy Spirit

  1278. to say Father

  1279. you love to give

  1280. good gifts

  1281. to your children

  1282. and I'm asking you

  1283. for the best gift

  1284. please give me

  1285. the Holy Spirit

  1286. please give me

  1287. more and more

  1288. of your Spirit

  1289. please fill me

1290. from the top of my head

1291. to the tips of my toes

  1292. body and soul

  1293. with the Spirit

  1294. of Jesus Christ

  1295. Holy Spirit

  1296. come rest on me

  1297. Holy Spirit

  1298. come enter into me

  1299. Holy Spirit

  1300. come live in me

  1301. and dwell in me

  1302. and reside in me

  1303. and abide in me

  1304. Holy Spirit

  1305. come

  1306. come fill my mind

  1307. and my thoughts

  1308. come fill my heart

  1309. and my affections

  1310. come fill my will

  1311. and my desires

  1312. Lord

  1313. enable me

  1314. to be full

  1315. of the Holy Spirit

  1316. and to walk

  1317. in the Holy Spirit

  1318. to be led by

  1319. the Holy Spirit

  1320. friends

  1321. who's dwelling

  1322. in your house

  1323. who's taking up

  1324. residence

  1325. in your life

  1326. in your house

  1327. let us make this

  1328. our prayer

1329. over the next 40 days

  1330. as we journey

  1331. toward Easter together

1332. in the name of the Father

  1333. Son and Holy Spirit

  1334. Amen

  1335. Amen
