  4. Good morning, I'm Tonya and I'm part of the Oikos and the Oaks group as well as Women Reading Roman.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of Luke chapter 19 verses 28 to 48 as printed in your liturgy.

    Luke 19:28–48

  6. A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

  7. After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

  8. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples saying to them,

  9. Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever written.

  10. Untie it and bring it here.

  11. If anyone asks you why are you untying it, say, The Lord needs it.

  12. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.

  13. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt?

  14. They replied, The Lord needs it.

  15. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and put Jesus on it.

  16. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

  17. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,

  18. the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen.

  19. Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.

  20. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  21. Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

  22. I tell you, he replied, If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.

  23. As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said,

  24. If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace,

  25. but now it is hidden from your eyes.

  26. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you

  27. and encircle you and hem you in on every side.

  28. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.

  29. They will not leave one stone on another because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you.

  30. When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.

  31. It is written, he said to them, My house will be a house of prayer,

  32. but you have made it a den of robbers.

  33. Every day he was teaching at the temple, but the chief priests, the teachers of the law,

  34. and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him,

  35. yet they could not find any way to do it because all the people hung on his words.

  36. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  37. Praise to you, O Christ.

  38. Thank you, Tonya, for that scripture reading.

  39. Good morning.

  40. Will you join me in prayer as we open up God's word?

  41. O God, we thank you that Easter's coming.

  42. We thank you that the King has come, that he's coming again,

  43. that resurrection has broken into history,

  44. and that resurrection is real for all of us as well.

  45. So, Lord, we desire that in the preaching of your word,

  46. that we would see Jesus and behold him for who he is,

  47. who he's come to be for us, the Prince of Peace.

  48. In his name we pray, amen.

  49. All right, so I'm just going to jump right in,

  50. and in case you're interested in my train of thought,

  51. I'm going to dive in, and what we're going to talk about is

  52. what happened, so what, now what, and is it worth it?

  53. All right, what happened, so what, now what, and is it worth it?

  54. And if I could put the what happened into a sentence,

  55. it would be this, Jesus was entering Jerusalem,

  56. Jesus was entering Yerushalayim,

  57. which literally means the foundation of Shalom,

  58. the city of peace.

  59. Jesus was entering Yerushalayim as the divine king,

  60. prophet, and priest of Shalom.

  61. Okay, that's what Jesus is doing here.

  62. He's entering Yerushalayim as the divine king,

  63. prophet, and priest of Shalom.

  64. That's the essence of what's happening here.

  65. But I really want to invite us even deeper into this scene.

  66. I want to really have us imagine what's going on.

  67. I want to walk us through these events in more vivid color

  68. to show how Jesus deliberately steps

  69. into these important roles of king, prophet, and priest.

  70. Now here in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  71. it's almost the time of the Passover,

  72. and every faithful Jewish worshiper,

  73. imagine up to a quarter million worshipers

  74. descending upon this little city of Jerusalem

  75. that's normally about 20,000 to 30,000 people.

  76. And being one of these people,

  77. Jesus has a very particular way

  78. he plans to enter the city.

  79. He's not just any Jewish worshiper.

  80. Verse 28 says,

  81. Now remember, for the last three years up to this moment,

  82. Jesus has been casting out demons,

  83. making the sick well, making the lame walk,

  84. making the blinds to see.

  85. And even right by this village that he's about to pass Bethany,

  86. he has just raised a man who was dead for four days to life, Lazarus.

  87. So up to this point, everyone's heard about this guy, Jesus,

  88. and everyone's wondering,

  89. could this be the moment we were waiting for?

  90. The Messiah moment.

  91. And verse 29 says,

  92. He's even now come to this hill called the Mount of Olives,

  93. which according to one of the last prophets of the Jewish people,

  94. Zechariah, this was where an earth-shattering event was supposed to happen,

  95. in which the Lord would conquer His enemies

  96. and establish a king,

  97. Himself as king,

  98. not just over Israel,

  99. but over the whole earth.

  100. I want to read some of this prophecy from Zechariah chapter 14 to you.

    Zechariah 14 chapter mention

  101. It says,

  102. On that day,

  103. His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,

  104. east of Jerusalem,

  105. and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west.

  106. Then the Lord my God will come,

  107. and all the holy ones with Him.

  108. On that day,

  109. the Lord Yahweh will be king over the whole earth.

  110. On that day,

  111. there will be one Lord,

  112. and His name the only name.

  113. So this is an incredibly momentous occasion,

  114. pregnant with anticipation and expectation,

  115. hope and emotion,

  116. and Jesus knows all of this, of course,

  117. and He's about to make a very clear statement

  118. with His entrance into the city.

  119. Jesus is about to claim that He's the divine king,

  120. and this is how He does it.

  121. Verse 29 says,

  122. He first sends two disciples into the village.

  123. We all know this story, right?

  124. To set Him up to make this statement.

  125. He says to them,

  126. Go to the village ahead of you,

  127. and as you enter it,

  128. this is in verse 30,

  129. you will find a colt tied there,

  130. which no one has ever ridden.

  131. Untie it and bring it here.

  132. If anyone asks you why you are untying it,

  133. say,

  134. The Lord needs it.

  135. No explanation,

  136. no apology.

  137. No,

  138. He sends out His servants with His ultimate kingly authority.

  139. He's the Lord,

  140. everything's His,

  141. and He needs that tied up,

  142. unridden donkey for His own purposes.

  143. So He says,

  144. Just go get it, guys.

  145. Just go get it.

  146. Verses 32 to 34 tell us that

  147. His disciples find everything

  148. just as their Lord says,

  149. including that awkward interaction

  150. between the donkey owner

  151. and these two random disciples, right?

  152. Like,

  153. Uh,

  154. excuse me,

  155. what do you think you're doing?

  156. That's my brand new donkey.

  157. I haven't even ridden on him yet.

  158. I've got a lot of plans for him.

  159. How dare you try to take him from me?

  160. But all the disciples say is

  161. what they're told.

  162. The Lord needs it,

  163. and somehow that's enough.

  164. This donkey owner bows

  165. to the kingly authority of Lord Jesus

  166. simply just mentioned by His disciples.

  167. So verse 35 says,

  168. They brought the donkey to Jesus.

  169. They threw their cloaks on it

  170. and put Jesus on it,

  171. and this is an unmistakable image,

  172. sign,

  173. and fulfillment of prophecy.

  174. Because see,

  175. when the son of David, Solomon,

  176. when he was inaugurated as king,

  177. as the next king,

  178. as the heir to David's kingly throne,

  179. the prophet Nathan

  180. and the priest Zadok,

  181. they escorted Solomon

  182. on a mule,

  183. much like this one,

  184. through the city,

  185. shouting,

  186. Long live King Solomon.

  187. So you have this inaugural image

  188. of a son of David

  189. that Jesus is reminding the people of,

  190. and then even more strikingly,

  191. this is a literal fulfillment

  192. of another prophecy

  193. of Zechariah chapter 9,

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  194. where God says,

  195. I will encamp at my temple

  196. to guard it.

  197. Never again will an oppressor

  198. overrun my people.

  199. Rejoice greatly,

  200. daughter of Zion.

  201. Shout,

  202. daughter of Jerusalem.

  203. See,

  204. your king comes to you

  205. righteous and victorious,

  206. lowly,

  207. and riding on a donkey,

  208. on a colt

  209. to the foal of a donkey.

  210. He says,

  211. I will take away the chariots

  212. and the war horses

  213. from Jerusalem,

  214. and the battle bow

  215. will be broken.

  216. He will proclaim peace

  217. to the nations.

  218. He will extend

  219. from sea to sea

  220. and from the river

  221. to the ends of the earth.

  222. So you have this

  223. snowballing crowd

  224. of pilgrims

  225. all headed into the city.

  226. They're just about

  227. two miles out

  228. from Jerusalem,

  229. and they see all this

  230. that Jesus is doing,

  231. the statement that he's making.

  232. And verses 36 to 38

  233. basically say

  234. that the crowd,

  235. probably filled

  236. with all these Galileans,

  237. right,

  238. who saw the miracles

  239. of Jesus firsthand,

  240. the crowd goes wild.

  241. And they begin

  242. to joyfully

  243. usher Jesus

  244. into Jerusalem.

  245. John's gospel

  246. says that they cut

  247. palm branches.

  248. That's why you see

  249. these palm branches

  250. here today.

  251. That's why this is

  252. Palm Sunday.

  253. And palm branches,

  254. these were the same

  255. kinds of branches

  256. that were used

  257. to celebrate

  258. the triumph

  259. of the Maccabees

  260. when Simon Maccabee

  261. rode into Jerusalem

  262. after they defeated

  263. the Greeks.

  264. People were also

  265. laying down

  266. their cloaks,

  267. right,

  268. letting them get soiled

  269. and muddy

  270. between the dirt road

  271. and the hooves

  272. of the donkey.

  273. Maybe these were

  274. the only cloaks

  275. that they packed

  276. on their pilgrimage

  277. journey,

  278. but this is just

  279. how much Jesus

  280. meant to them.

  281. And as Jesus

  282. and the crowd

  283. of disciples

  284. summit the Mount

  285. of Olives,

  286. they make it

  287. to the top

  288. and they exchange

  289. the sight

  290. of that dirty,

  291. dusty road

  292. all the way up

  293. to the top

  294. of the hill.

  295. They exchange

  296. that sight

  297. for a view

  298. of the holy city,

  299. right,

  300. glistening

  301. in the sun

  302. right across

  303. from the lush,

  304. green Kidron Valley

  305. below.

  306. They cannot help

  307. but sing.

  308. They cannot help

  309. but praise God

  310. for all that he's done

  311. and all that they believe

  312. he's about to do

  313. in and through

  314. the Messiah.

  315. And they join

  316. the songs of the angels

  317. at the very birth

  318. of Jesus Christ.

  319. Peace,

  320. shalom,

  321. peace in heaven

  322. and glory

  323. in the highest.

  324. They see this

  325. not just as an earthly event

  326. but as a cosmic event,

  327. a heavenly event.

  328. And they sing

  329. Psalm 118

  330. which we read

  331. in our call to worship

  332. this morning

  333. which says,

  334. blessed is the one,

  335. blessed is he

  336. who comes in the name

  337. of the Lord.

  338. Only they've altered

  339. the lyrics slightly

  340. to refer to him.

  341. Blessed is the king

  342. they sing.

  343. Blessed is the king

  344. who comes

  345. in the name

  346. of the Lord.

  347. They're convinced.

  348. They're convinced

  349. that Jesus

  350. is the one true king.

  351. They've seen his miracles.

  352. They've heard his teachings.

  353. They've witnessed

  354. his character

  355. and now this

  356. unmistakable display

  357. of the donkey

  358. they are convinced.

  359. To the crowd

  360. of disciples

  361. he is him.

  362. But,

  363. verse 39 says,

  364. the Pharisees

  365. are less convinced.

  366. They say,

  367. teachers,

  368. rebuke your disciples.

  369. And while we've seen

  370. the humility

  371. of Jesus plenty

  372. throughout the gospels,

  373. we've even seen him

  374. tell people,

  375. don't let people

  376. know about my miracles yet.

  377. Don't enthrone me

  378. as king yet.

  379. The time has now come.

  380. The time has now come

  381. and he's ready

  382. to receive all the praise

  383. and in fact,

  384. even more.

  385. He says in verse 40,

  386. I tell you Pharisees,

  387. if these crowds

  388. of disciples

  389. keep quiet,

  390. someone's gonna praise me.

  391. The stones,

  392. the stones

  393. will cry out.

  394. This is a cosmic event.

  395. All of creation

  396. knows

  397. and rightly praises

  398. its maker

  399. and king.

  400. Jesus here

  401. is undeniably claiming

  402. to be the king

  403. and the divine king

  404. of promise.

  405. But he's not just

  406. the king who will rule

  407. and reign in triumph.

  408. He's also

  409. a divine prophet.

  410. He's come to be

  411. a divine prophet.

  412. Now,

  413. you'd think that this

  414. was one of the high points

  415. in Jesus' life so far

  416. with all this

  417. celebratory spirit,

  418. all this affirmation

  419. and approval,

  420. all these praises

  421. directed at him,

  422. but what does

  423. verse 41 say?

  424. As he approached Jerusalem

  425. and saw the city,

  426. he wept.

  427. He wept over it.

  428. Why?

  429. Because as a prophet,

  430. he sees

  431. as God sees.

  432. The true reality,

  433. the true state

  434. of Jerusalem,

  435. and he can see

  436. what is about

  437. to happen

  438. to this place

  439. that's supposed

  440. to be the holy city,

  441. that's supposed

  442. to be the dwelling

  443. place of God.

  444. He prophesies

  445. and mourns

  446. because he can see

  447. what could have been

  448. and what should have been.

  449. In verse 42,

  450. he says,

  451. if you,

  452. even you,

  453. O so-called city of peace,

  454. had only known

  455. on this day

  456. what would actually

  457. bring you peace,

  458. but now it is hidden

  459. from your eyes.

  460. Only he,

  461. the prophet,

  462. can see it.

  463. And while the crowd

  464. around him

  465. is celebrating with joy,

  466. he rides his donkey

  467. as a king

  468. and a prophet

  469. full of tears

  470. in his eyes.

  471. Because he knows,

  472. verse 43 says,

  473. the days will come

  474. upon you,

  475. Jerusalem,

  476. when your enemies

  477. will build

  478. an embankment

  479. against you

  480. and circle you

  481. and hem you in

  482. on every side,

  483. they will dash you

  484. to the ground.

  485. You and the children

  486. within your walls,

  487. they will not leave

  488. one stone on another

  489. because, listen,

  490. because you did not

  491. recognize the time

  492. of God's coming

  493. to you.

  494. Because they did not

  495. recognize God

  496. come to them

  497. riding on a donkey.

  498. Jesus knows

  499. that Jerusalem

  500. won't accept him

  501. as the divine king.

  502. He knows

  503. that the city of peace

  504. is about to reject,

  505. betray,

  506. torture,

  507. and crucify

  508. the prince of peace

  509. and that even though

  510. God in the flesh

  511. has come right

  512. before their very eyes,

  513. humble and riding

  514. on a donkey,

  515. Jerusalem prefers

  516. to wait for some

  517. other king

  518. than the God king.

  519. So Jesus prophesies

  520. about what will happen

  521. as they pursue a king

  522. more like the other kings

  523. of the earth

  524. and he prophesies

  525. of what eventually

  526. did happen in AD 70

  527. when the Romans came

  528. and they put down

  529. the violent revolt

  530. of the temple priests

  531. and the Jewish militants

  532. and when the Romans

  533. destroyed the temple

  534. and destroyed

  535. all of Jerusalem

  536. just like the Babylonians

  537. had done

  538. just about 600 years earlier.

  539. All because the people

  540. of Jerusalem

  541. could not see

  542. the things

  543. that make for peace.

  544. They couldn't see

  545. a path to peace

  546. in this donkey

  547. riding king.

  548. They couldn't see

  549. the coming of God

  550. in this image

  551. of gentleness

  552. and humility.

  553. Power and autonomy

  554. and real estate

  555. were their true gods

  556. and the only viable

  557. path to peace

  558. in their eyes

  559. was through forceful

  560. political revolution.

  561. So the divine prophet

  562. Jesus sees this truth

  563. and speaks this truth

  564. to the city of peace

  565. that is unwilling

  566. and unable

  567. to hear him.

  568. That they are missing

  569. out on peace

  570. that's right before

  571. their eyes

  572. and they're doomed

  573. to destruction.

  574. Now as soon as

  575. Jesus enters Jerusalem

  576. as king and prophet

  577. he doesn't storm

  578. into Pontius Pilate's

  579. residence

  580. to wage war

  581. against Rome.

  582. No his first order

  583. of business

  584. is actually

  585. to go up

  586. and go and clean

  587. the temple

  588. because he's also

  589. a priest

  590. a divine priest.

  591. Verse 45

  592. When Jesus entered

  593. the temple courts

  594. he began to drive out

  595. those who were selling

  596. and referencing

  597. the prophet Isaiah

  598. he says in verse 46

  599. it is written

  600. my house

  601. will be a house

  602. of prayer.

  603. See Jesus isn't just

  604. the king come to restore

  605. people's property

  606. and security

  607. he's not just even

  608. a prophet come to restore

  609. people's vision

  610. of reality

  611. no he's also a priest

  612. come to restore

  613. people's access

  614. to and communion

  615. with God.

  616. He's a priest

  617. come to restore

  618. the broken dwelling

  619. place of God.

  620. And referencing

  621. the prophet Jeremiah

  622. who also wept

  623. over Jerusalem's

  624. coming destruction

  625. he accuses those

  626. who are selling

  627. in the temple

  628. of making it

  629. a den of robbers.

  630. These were people

  631. who thought

  632. that they were safe

  633. and fine

  634. as long as the temple

  635. stood standing

  636. and as long as

  637. they just kept

  638. the operation

  639. running

  640. but Jesus

  641. disposes

  642. of that misconception

  643. Jesus the priest

  644. exposes the temple

  645. and those within it

  646. who think they are

  647. helping people

  648. make sacrifices

  649. to cleanse themselves

  650. before God

  651. Jesus is this place

  652. and all of you

  653. are far more unclean

  654. than you could imagine

  655. and I'm here

  656. as the real priest

  657. to do something

  658. about that.

  659. I'm here for the true

  660. and final cleansing

  661. of the people

  662. of God.

  663. So you see

  664. Palm Sunday

  665. isn't just about

  666. Jesus as king

  667. but Jesus

  668. as prophet

  669. priest

  670. and king

  671. he steps into

  672. all three roles

  673. all three offices

  674. on Palm Sunday.

  675. That's what happened.

  676. But now you may be

  677. wondering

  678. thinking to yourself

  679. well okay

  680. Jesus came into Jerusalem

  681. claiming to be

  682. a prophet

  683. priest

  684. and king

  685. I'm not even Jewish

  686. though.

  687. I haven't been waiting

  688. for a prophet

  689. or priest

  690. a king

  691. to show up

  692. in my life

  693. I'm not even sure

  694. what that means

  695. and how that's

  696. relevant for me.

  697. Basically you're

  698. thinking to yourself

  699. okay cool

  700. Jesus claimed to be

  701. prophet priest

  702. and king

  703. I see that

  704. but so what?

  705. And how I'd like

  706. to respond

  707. is by saying

  708. sure you may not

  709. have been waiting

  710. for the fulfillment

  711. of some Jewish

  712. messianic prophecy

  713. about a final

  714. great divine

  715. prophet priest

  716. and king

  717. to come

  718. but deep down

  719. isn't it true

  720. that we all want

  721. that we all need

  722. a king

  723. a prophet

  724. and a priest

  725. in our lives

  726. even if we might

  727. not state it

  728. in those terms.

  729. Now at first

  730. you might be

  731. thinking to yourself

  732. no way

  733. I'm American

  734. or maybe even

  735. if you're not

  736. American

  737. you're like

  738. no way

  739. no king

  740. for me

  741. I much prefer

  742. my independence

  743. and my autonomy

  744. but what if it's

  745. actually not that

  746. you are anti-king

  747. but that you are

  748. anti-bad kings?

  749. Think about

  750. all the things

  751. that entertain us

  752. when we enjoy

  753. the Lord of the Rings

  754. any King Arthur tale

  755. maybe your thing's

  756. Game of Thrones

  757. is it really

  758. that you hate

  759. the idea

  760. of a king

  761. or is it actually

  762. that you just hate

  763. the idea

  764. of a bad king?

  765. Deep down

  766. I think we all

  767. want a king

  768. and we all know

  769. we need a king

  770. in this current

  771. era of strong

  772. men

  773. that we're witnessing

  774. in our country

  775. and across the globe

  776. really we're seeing

  777. people

  778. are desperate

  779. for someone

  780. to guide them

  781. protect them

  782. lead them

  783. someone who will

  784. fight and win

  785. for them

  786. someone who will

  787. fix their problems

  788. and restore justice

  789. and peace

  790. we're seeing

  791. this desperation

  792. leading to whole nations

  793. even electing

  794. supposed strong men

  795. of extreme volatility

  796. and even questionable

  797. character

  798. and we might disagree

  799. we might lament

  800. their choices

  801. but see

  802. these sentiments

  803. are coming from

  804. a real and true sense

  805. that we need someone

  806. outside of ourselves

  807. to deliver us

  808. from our ever

  809. worsening

  810. too big to handle

  811. broken systems

  812. structures

  813. and circumstances

  814. and this is why

  815. politics has become

  816. the new religion

  817. for so many

  818. it's because

  819. they are searching

  820. for a king

  821. they know they need one

  822. and they are tired

  823. of trying to be the king

  824. of their own lives

  825. the project of

  826. self-expressive individualism

  827. where we are simply

  828. our own

  829. and we belong

  830. and submit only

  831. to ourselves

  832. that project

  833. we are seeing

  834. to be failing us

  835. and we are now

  836. much more open

  837. to the notion

  838. of an authority figure

  839. if he's good enough

  840. if she's good enough

  841. the responsibility

  842. of being our own kings

  843. our own sovereigns

  844. it's a weight

  845. we were never meant

  846. to bear

  847. for ourselves

  848. and this is what

  849. the scriptures

  850. themselves teach

  851. from the very beginning

  852. of our existence

  853. in Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  854. when God called us

  855. to be fruitful

  856. and to multiply

  857. and to fill the earth

  858. and to rule

  859. yes God called humanity

  860. to exercise dominion

  861. over the whole earth

  862. but ultimately

  863. we were only meant

  864. to be vice regents

  865. not gods

  866. people made

  867. in the image

  868. of God

  869. the authority

  870. we ruled with

  871. that we were supposed

  872. to rule with

  873. was only ever meant

  874. to be a derived authority

  875. that we received

  876. from our divine king

  877. and father in heaven

  878. so not only

  879. do we all want

  880. and need a king

  881. but the scriptures

  882. themselves teach us

  883. that we were always

  884. meant to be children

  885. and servants

  886. of the ultimate

  887. high king of heaven

  888. and in the same way

  889. even if we've never

  890. thought of it this way

  891. we've also always

  892. needed a prophet

  893. we've always needed

  894. a prophet

  895. we've always needed

  896. an authoritative voice

  897. someone with ultimate

  898. and divine insight

  899. into the true nature

  900. and reality of things

  901. in this information age

  902. of the internet

  903. and in the midst

  904. of our culture wars

  905. with all these ideologues

  906. and nations

  907. and tribes

  908. vying to control

  909. the narrative

  910. with the rise of AI

  911. and deep fakes

  912. and fake news

  913. am I the only one

  914. who deeply feels

  915. this epistemological crisis

  916. of our cultural moment

  917. like how do we really

  918. know what we know

  919. how do we know

  920. what's true

  921. how do we know

  922. what's real

  923. how do we know

  924. what's false

  925. how do we know

  926. what's fake

  927. even as technology

  928. and science

  929. have brought us

  930. a whole lot of knowledge

  931. and data

  932. and confidence

  933. in our understanding

  934. of the world

  935. it's also brought

  936. a lot of confusion

  937. and noise

  938. I can't tell you

  939. how many times

  940. chat GPT

  941. has had to apologize

  942. to me

  943. for getting something wrong

  944. alright

  945. it's not there yet guys

  946. it's not there yet

  947. and then even

  948. outside of all this

  949. raw data

  950. and computing

  951. right

  952. when it comes to

  953. how to interpret

  954. all the data

  955. what starting points

  956. we use to determine

  957. what is right

  958. and wrong

  959. what is the purpose

  960. of life

  961. what does it mean

  962. to be human

  963. this too

  964. is a burden

  965. that fickle

  966. finite

  967. fallible

  968. human beings

  969. like us

  970. were never

  971. meant to bear

  972. and sure

  973. we try to

  974. supplement ourselves

  975. with like these

  976. pseudo

  977. prophetic voices

  978. our favorite

  979. journalists

  980. op-ed writers

  981. podcasters

  982. social media influencers

  983. life coaches

  984. and therapists

  985. and these can all

  986. be helpful

  987. and good

  988. but the truth is

  989. we've always needed

  990. a real prophet

  991. a divine voice

  992. to tell us

  993. what is true

  994. good

  995. and beautiful

  996. and what isn't

  997. you know

  998. even when Adam

  999. walked with God

  1000. in the garden

  1001. and was given

  1002. the task of

  1003. basically

  1004. he was doing science

  1005. he was doing science

  1006. walking with God

  1007. in the garden

  1008. speaking forth

  1009. about reality

  1010. naming and categorizing

  1011. the animals around him

  1012. in human language

  1013. he did that though

  1014. with the help

  1015. and the presence

  1016. of God

  1017. with God

  1018. in his ear

  1019. God was the one

  1020. bringing the animals

  1021. to him

  1022. and he did that

  1023. as someone made

1024. in the image of God

  1025. simply thinking

  1026. God's thoughts

  1027. after him

  1028. so even if we've

  1029. never thought of it

  1030. this way

  1031. even if we're not

  1032. Jewish

  1033. and don't consider

  1034. ourselves religious

  1035. truly

  1036. we've always needed

  1037. a king

  1038. and a prophet

  1039. and we've also

  1040. always needed

  1041. a priest

  1042. even if you're

  1043. here today

  1044. you don't consider

  1045. yourself a Christian

  1046. or even religious

  1047. you're maybe an atheist

  1048. or you consider

  1049. yourself agnostic

  1050. I'm convinced

  1051. that you

  1052. along with all

  1053. the rest of us

  1054. you also need

  1055. a priest

  1056. someone to help

  1057. you connect

  1058. with whatever it is

  1059. that you believe

  1060. to be sacred

  1061. we all need

  1062. someone to mediate

  1063. between us

  1064. and the sacred

  1065. the transcendent

  1066. the divine

  1067. someone to show us

  1068. how to be clean

  1069. before a holy God

  1070. or whatever it is

  1071. that we worship

  1072. and even if you

  1073. don't believe in God

  1074. and can't identify

  1075. with this like

  1076. desire to be clean

  1077. in God's eyes

  1078. maybe for you

  1079. the more universal

  1080. language is guilt

  1081. and shame

  1082. over your bad habits

  1083. your bad patterns

  1084. your addictions

  1085. and your regrets

  1086. I know we all

  1087. have these

  1088. I certainly do

  1089. aren't we all

  1090. pursuing practices

  1091. whether spiritual

  1092. or not

  1093. whether prayer

  1094. and fasting

  1095. or nature hikes

  1096. and mindfulness

  1097. to try to be

  1098. the people

  1099. we want to be

  1100. to try to get

  1101. into a state

  1102. of peace

  1103. and purity

  1104. of heart

  1105. and mind

  1106. maybe you're

  1107. a disciple

  1108. of Brene Brown

  1109. she's your priestess

  1110. and you're fighting

  1111. to believe her

  1112. when she says

  1113. that you are worthy

  1114. worthy of love

  1115. and worthy of belonging

  1116. but it's so hard

  1117. right

  1118. to believe

  1119. because we all know

  1120. the things we've done

  1121. the things we've left

  1122. undone

  1123. we all have

  1124. our regrets

  1125. that haunt us

  1126. and make us feel

  1127. unclean

  1128. ashamed

  1129. and like we're not

  1130. enough

  1131. see more than

  1132. the wisdom

  1133. and counsel

  1134. of Brene Brown

1135. and I like Brene Brown

  1136. what we need

  1137. is a priest

  1138. someone to stand

  1139. in the gap

  1140. between us

  1141. and God

  1142. someone to make

  1143. atonement for us

  1144. to show us

  1145. the way

  1146. to inner cleansing

  1147. and wholeness

  1148. someone who won't

  1149. just cover our shame

  1150. or help us escape

  1151. our shame

  1152. but someone who

  1153. will remove it

  1154. for good

  1155. Adams

  1156. and Eve's

  1157. fig leaves

  1158. they would not

  1159. do it

  1160. they needed

  1161. the Lord

  1162. to sacrifice

  1163. a live animal

  1164. in order to

  1165. cover them

  1166. so don't you see

  1167. even if you've

  1168. never thought of it

  1169. in these terms

  1170. we've always

  1171. needed a divine

  1172. king

  1173. a divine prophet

  1174. and a divine

  1175. priest

  1176. that has always

  1177. been and has

  1178. only ever been

  1179. the way

  1180. to shalom

  1181. the way to

  1182. peace

  1183. justice

  1184. joy

  1185. and fulfillment

  1186. no other king

  1187. no other prophet

  1188. no other priest

  1189. will do

  1190. and today

  1191. I wonder

  1192. if Jesus

  1193. might be saying

  1194. to you

  1195. hey

  1196. what if

  1197. I'm a better

  1198. king

  1199. leader

  1200. and protector

  1201. than all

  1202. the other

  1203. authority

  1204. figures

  1205. that you're

  1206. turning to

  1207. serving

  1208. following

  1209. and bowing

  1210. down to

  1211. what if

  1212. I'm a more

  1213. truthful

  1214. and insightful

  1215. prophet

  1216. than all

  1217. the other

  1218. voices

  1219. that are

  1220. vying

  1221. for your

  1222. attention

  1223. and agreement

  1224. and what

  1225. if I'm

  1226. also the

  1227. only priest

  1228. who can

  1229. truly make

  1230. you clean

  1231. and qualified

  1232. worthy

  1233. and unashamed

  1234. in the eyes

  1235. of the only

  1236. one whose

  1237. eyes truly

  1238. matter

  1239. actually

  1240. today

  1241. if you hear

  1242. his voice

  1243. he's not

  1244. just saying

  1245. what if

  1246. he's saying

  1247. I am

  1248. I am

  1249. the divine

  1250. king

  1251. prophet

  1252. and priest

  1253. that can

  1254. bring you

  1255. shalom

  1256. if you will

  1257. have it

  1258. if you will

  1259. have me

  1260. but the question

  1261. for all of us

  1262. especially as we

  1263. enter into

  1264. holy week

  1265. is will we

  1266. will we

  1267. receive him

  1268. the whole of

  1269. us

  1270. receive the

  1271. whole of

  1272. who he is

  1273. into the

  1274. whole of

  1275. our lives

  1276. in our

  1277. passage this

  1278. morning

  1279. Jesus made

  1280. an unmistakable

  1281. statement

  1282. about who

  1283. he was

  1284. and he

  1285. then set

  1286. himself

  1287. up right

  1288. in the

  1289. center

  1290. of the

  1291. temple

  1292. in Jerusalem

  1293. for everyone

  1294. to make

  1295. that decision

  1296. there are only

  1297. two ultimate

  1298. responses

  1299. verse 47

  1300. every day

  1301. he was teaching

  1302. at the temple

  1303. but the chief

  1304. priest

  1305. the teachers

  1306. of the law

  1307. and the leaders

  1308. among the people

  1309. were trying to

  1310. kill him

  1311. yet they could

  1312. not find any

  1313. way to do it

  1314. because all the

  1315. people hung

  1316. on his words

  1317. there were the

  1318. prophets

  1319. I mean there

  1320. were the

  1321. Pharisees

  1322. and the

  1323. priests

  1324. right

  1325. who wanted

  1326. to murder

  1327. him

  1328. and then

  1329. there were

  1330. the people

  1331. who hung

  1332. on his

  1333. words

  1334. those are

  1335. the two

  1336. options

  1337. and it's

  1338. really interesting

  1339. to me

  1340. how it was

  1341. the ones

  1342. who believed

  1343. they had so

  1344. much to lose

  1345. who were in

  1346. the kill him

  1347. crowd

  1348. and then the

  1349. ones who believed

  1350. they had so much

  1351. to gain

  1352. in the crown him

  1353. crowd

  1354. and this presents us

  1355. with the crux

  1356. of one's decision

  1357. to accept Jesus

  1358. as prophet

  1359. priest

  1360. and king

  1361. or not

  1362. into our lives

  1363. are we willing

1364. to give it all up

  1365. to follow him

  1366. in order to gain

  1367. everything

  1368. he has for us

  1369. do we believe

  1370. it's worth it

  1371. this invitation

  1372. to follow Jesus

  1373. and be united

  1374. with the maker

  1375. of the universe

  1376. that offer is free

  1377. but it's not simple

  1378. and it comes

  1379. with a challenge

  1380. Jesus will only

  1381. be accepted

  1382. by you

  1383. if you accept

  1384. him for all

  1385. that he is

  1386. the divine king

  1387. the divine prophet

  1388. and the divine priest

  1389. and some of you

  1390. are here today

  1391. and you're struggling

  1392. with that

  1393. maybe one of them

  1394. maybe two of them

  1395. maybe all three

  1396. some of you

  1397. are here today

  1398. and you're struggling

  1399. to submit to him

  1400. as king

  1401. there is something

  1402. there is some kind

  1403. of donkey

  1404. in your life

  1405. there is some kind

  1406. of cloak

  1407. in your life

  1408. that God's spirit

  1409. is indicating to you

  1410. the Lord needs it

1411. but you had all these plans

  1412. all these hopes

  1413. all these dreams

  1414. for this donkey

  1415. for this cloak

1416. certainly not to let it

  1417. be taken from you

  1418. or soiled

  1419. in the mud

  1420. maybe these things

  1421. are your children

  1422. your job

  1423. your career

  1424. your time

  1425. your dreams

  1426. your ambitions

  1427. but king Jesus

  1428. claims the whole

  1429. of your life

  1430. and all that you

  1431. possess

  1432. so how will you

  1433. respond

  1434. crown him

  1435. or crucify him

  1436. maybe others

  1437. of you today

  1438. are struggling

  1439. to listen to Jesus

  1440. as prophet

  1441. you have trouble

  1442. believing everything

  1443. he says about you

  1444. and the true nature

  1445. of reality

  1446. and what will really

  1447. bring peace

  1448. to you

  1449. and the world

  1450. you'd rather listen

  1451. to other voices

  1452. other experts

  1453. other analysts

  1454. your own inner voice

  1455. you'd rather scan

  1456. and scour

  1457. day and night

  1458. for more and more

  1459. data

1460. to give you an edge

  1461. to give you

  1462. a competitive advantage

  1463. in your quest

  1464. for peace

  1465. and well-being

  1466. you don't trust

  1467. Jesus' prophetic vision

  1468. for a life

  1469. of flourishing

  1470. with him

  1471. you can't even trust

  1472. he's able to

  1473. clearly communicate

  1474. divine and infallible

  1475. truth to you

  1476. well Jesus' prophetic

  1477. voice and word

  1478. to you today

1479. is that he is the way

  1480. he is the way

  1481. he is the truth

  1482. he is the life

  1483. so will you heed

  1484. his word

  1485. or hush it

  1486. and then finally

  1487. there are still others

  1488. here who struggle

  1489. to allow Jesus

  1490. into your lives

  1491. as priest

  1492. you know that

  1493. your bodies

  1494. are supposed to be

  1495. a temple

  1496. of the living God

  1497. the Holy Spirit

  1498. but you're not okay

  1499. with Jesus

  1500. coming into your heart

  1501. and into your life

  1502. to rearrange

  1503. the furniture

  1504. you desperately

  1505. want to be cleaned

  1506. and pure and worthy

  1507. for blessed are

  1508. the pure in heart

  1509. like the children said

1510. for they shall see God

1511. but you're also not ready

  1512. to be cleansed

  1513. of your impurities

  1514. your addictions

  1515. your attachments

  1516. your resentments

  1517. your lies and secrets

  1518. your excesses

  1519. or maybe

  1520. you don't even think

  1521. you need cleansing

  1522. you like the priests

  1523. and the Pharisees

  1524. and the sellers

  1525. in the temple

  1526. don't even realize

  1527. that you are harboring

  1528. a den of robbers

  1529. in your life

  1530. and you think

1531. that you are quite safe

  1532. and secure

  1533. and clean

  1534. and worthy

  1535. simply just upholding

  1536. the status quo

  1537. of your life

  1538. nothing needs to change

  1539. Jesus' priestly plea

1540. to you is to let him in

  1541. to make you new

  1542. will you receive him

  1543. or reject him

1544. see today on Palm Sunday

  1545. Jesus isn't just

  1546. entering into Jerusalem

  1547. in this story

  1548. on a donkey

  1549. he wants to enter

  1550. your lives

  1551. as divine king

  1552. prophet

  1553. and priest

  1554. and not just

  1555. and not because

1556. he wants to dominate you

  1557. it's because he wants

  1558. your peace

  1559. he wants your shalom

  1560. that is his heart

1561. that is the heart of God

  1562. for you today

1563. and if you want that too

1564. I want to encourage you

  1565. to respond today

  1566. come find me

  1567. come find Jonathan

  1568. come receive prayer

  1569. from our deacons

  1570. if there is something

  1571. in your life

  1572. another king

1573. that is holding you captive

  1574. we want to pray

  1575. for deliverance for you

  1576. if there are voices

  1577. that you cannot shake

  1578. voices in your head

  1579. that tell you

  1580. alternative truths

1581. that are not in accord

1582. with God's heart for you

  1583. we want to pray

  1584. those voices away

  1585. that you would hear

  1586. the prophet

  1587. if there are things

  1588. in your life

  1589. that you know

  1590. need to be cleansed

  1591. maybe you've only

  1592. given Jesus

  1593. 99% of your life

  1594. there's still 1% left

  1595. that you have yet

  1596. to let go of

  1597. we want to pray

1598. that you let the priest in

1599. and clean out his temple

1600. and give you his peace

  1601. come respond

  1602. to this God

  1603. he is good

1604. we promise he is good

  1605. we want this church

1606. to be filled with people

  1607. who've crowned

  1608. Jesus as king

  1609. heeded him as prophet

  1610. and received his cleansing

  1611. as our priest

  1612. we promise you

1613. Jesus is a good king

  1614. he's a good prophet

  1615. he's a good priest

  1616. because he's a good lord

  1617. he's a good God

  1618. he's a humble king

  1619. who comes in peace

  1620. gentle and lowly

  1621. riding on a donkey

  1622. coming to you

  1623. with the intention

1624. of donning a crown of thorns

  1625. in your place

  1626. a king who doesn't enslave you

1627. but gives his life for you

  1628. and then conquer sin

  1629. and even death

  1630. by his resurrection

  1631. for you

1632. and he's an empathetic priest

  1633. he's an empathetic prophet

  1634. as well

  1635. who doesn't really

  1636. just preach at you

  1637. in self-righteous

  1638. judgmental condemnation

1639. but he weeps over you

  1640. and your blindness

  1641. and your inability

  1642. to see

  1643. and hear

  1644. his love for you

1645. his desire for your peace

  1646. your refusal

1647. to take hold of the peace

  1648. he's offering for you

  1649. to you for free

  1650. and finally

  1651. he's the ultimate

  1652. kingly priest

1653. who wants to drive out

  1654. all the impurities

  1655. in your life

  1656. not by demanding

  1657. that you make

  1658. your own sacrifices

  1659. unto him

  1660. as payment

  1661. you know when Jesus

  1662. gets into that temple

  1663. right

1664. and he begins to remove

1665. the sellers from the temple

  1666. he also removes

  1667. the animals with them

  1668. right

1669. and it should make you wonder

  1670. how then

  1671. would people be able

  1672. to make their sacrifices

  1673. we see the beauty

1674. of Jesus as a priest

1675. is he is a priest

1676. who is at the same time

  1677. the very sacrificial

  1678. lamb of God

  1679. those animals

  1680. were obsolete

  1681. he's saying

  1682. I'm here now

1683. he's the lamb of God

  1684. slaughtered for you

  1685. to make you perfectly

  1686. cleansed

  1687. and restored

  1688. in your relationship

  1689. with God

  1690. so the call

  1691. the word of God

  1692. to us this morning

  1693. is crown him

  1694. heed him

  1695. receive him

  1696. enter into his peace

  1697. and taste and see

  1698. that the Lord Jesus

  1699. is good

  1700. let's pray

  1701. Lord we thank you

1702. that you are a God

  1703. who is always

  1704. and only ever

  1705. wanted our peace

  1706. all along

  1707. and we confess

  1708. all the other kings

  1709. we've followed

  1710. all the other prophets

  1711. we've listened to

  1712. all the other priests

  1713. we've looked to

  1714. to cleanse us

  1715. oh God

  1716. we would see

  1717. Jesus instead

1718. help us to behold him

  1719. for who he is

  1720. see his beauty

  1721. will we experience him

  1722. as a good king

  1723. a good prophet

  1724. and a good priest

  1725. oh God

  1726. help us to taste

  1727. and see

  1728. that you are good

  1729. in Christ's name

  1730. amen

  1731. amen

  1732. Thank you.
