  5. Good morning.

  6. My name is Carrie Moulton and I'm a member of the Welcome Team and a scripture reader.

  7. And the Gospel lesson for today is a reading for the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 24,

    Luke 24:1–35

  8. verses 1 through 35.

  9. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they

  10. had prepared and went to the tomb.

  11. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the

  12. body of the Lord Jesus.

  13. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning

  14. stood beside them.

  15. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground.

  16. But the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead?

  17. He is not here.

  18. He has risen.

  19. Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee.

  20. The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the

  21. third day be raised again.

  22. Then they remembered his words.

  23. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the

  24. others.

  25. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told

  26. this to the apostles.

  27. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

  28. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb.

  29. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to

  30. himself what had happened.

  31. Now that same day, two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from

  32. Jerusalem.

  33. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.

  34. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up.

  35. And walked along with them.

  36. But they were kept from recognizing him.

  37. He asked them, what are you discussing together as you walk along?

  38. They stood still, their faces downcast.

  39. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does

  40. not know the things that have happened there in these days?

  41. What things, he asked.

  42. About Jesus of Nazareth, they replied.

  43. He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed, before God and all the people.

  44. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified

  45. him.

  46. But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.

  47. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.

  48. In addition, some of our women amazed us.

  49. They went to the tomb early this morning, but they didn't find his body.

  50. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.

  51. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said.

  52. But they did not see Jesus.

  53. He said to them, how foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have

  54. spoken.

  55. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?

  56. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the

  57. scriptures concerning himself.

  58. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were

  59. going farther.

  60. But they urged him strongly, stay with us, for it is nearly evening.

  61. The day is almost over.

  62. So he went in to stay with them.

  63. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give

  64. it to them.

  65. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him and he disappeared from their sight.

  66. They asked each other, were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on

  67. the road and opened the scriptures to us?

  68. They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem.

  69. There they found the eleven and those with them assembled together and saying, it is true,

  70. the Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.

  71. Then the two told what had happened on the way and how Jesus was recognized by them when

  72. he broke the bread.

  73. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  74. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  75. Happy Easter, Christ Church.

  76. It's so good to see you all this morning.

  77. And for those of you who are guests with us today, maybe you came with a friend or Googled

  78. church near me.

  79. We are delighted that you're here.

  80. My name is Jonathan.

  81. I'm one of the other pastors here.

  82. And this is such a rich chapter of scripture.

  83. In fact, we didn't even read the whole chapter.

  84. We're going to read the rest and talk about the rest next week.

  85. But there's so much here today.

  86. We're just going to dive straight in.

  87. And we're going to talk today about three headings.

  88. We're just going to explore this story under three headings.

  89. And we're going to talk about wondering minds.

  90. Wondering minds, burning hearts, and opening eyes.

  91. Those are three things that are happening in this story.

  92. Wondering minds, burning hearts, and opening eyes.

  93. And I just want to let you know, give you a heads up that my last point is going to be

  94. much shorter than my first two points.

  95. So if you find yourself getting nervous, feeling a little anxious, just know I probably want

  96. to get to the Easter reception more than you do.

  97. So we're going to make it happen.

  98. All right?

  99. But we're going to talk first about wondering minds.

  100. Luke, he recounts the details of this first Easter morning.

  101. And in doing so, in verse 10, he names these female disciples of Jesus.

  102. Mary, Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, the mother of James, and the other women.

  103. And he says that they took spices to the tomb.

  104. Why did they do that?

  105. Well, they wanted to honor Jesus one last time by embalming his corpse with these spices.

  106. And they were not thinking, hey, we've got the spices in case he's still dead.

  107. But let's hope that he's alive again and we can all sing the Hallelujah Chorus.

  108. Right?

  109. They knew what we know, which is that dead bodies stay dead.

  110. And this is not a princess bride situation.

  111. If you grew up in that movie where Jesus is mostly dead but a little bit alive.

  112. Right?

  113. The Romans were masters at crucifixion.

  114. Jesus is all dead.

  115. And these women were not at all prepared for what they would find.

  116. When they arrived at the tomb, they had an incredible shock.

  117. And they're asking themselves, like, who rolled away this massive stone?

  118. What happened to the Roman guard that was here guarding this place?

  119. And why is Jesus' body not inside the tomb?

  120. And it says in verse 4 that they were wondering.

  121. Their minds were wondering.

  122. They were perplexed.

  123. They were bewildered.

  124. And maybe that's how you feel today.

  125. You're wondering.

  126. Well, suddenly, just like in the Christmas story with the angels that come to those shepherds in the field of Bethlehem,

  127. these heavenly, angelic beings, these messengers from God,

  128. they come and announce this crazy, breaking news that Jesus is living.

  129. And here's what they say in verse 5.

  130. They say,

  131. Why do you look for the living among the dead?

  132. He is not here.

  133. He has risen.

  134. Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee,

  135. the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners,

  136. be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.

  137. The message from God to these women is that Jesus is passed from the realm of the dead,

  138. from the realm of the dying where we all exist.

  139. And he's gone through death, out the other side, into the life of the age to come.

  140. And there he is the living one in this new resurrected glorious body

  141. as the first fruits of God's new creation.

  142. And some of us might read this story and say,

  143. Ah, I see what's going on.

  144. Jesus is metaphorically living.

  145. Jesus is spiritually risen.

  146. That this is a wonderful mythic symbol.

  147. That good triumphs over evil.

  148. And that life continues in the face of death.

  149. And that as dark as things get, there's always the dawn.

  150. No matter how bad life is, we can always have hope.

  151. And so the question is, is this a spiritual metaphor?

  152. Is this a legend that never happened?

  153. And the angels there, they say,

  154. No.

  155. Jesus told you ahead of time that he would be raised from the dead,

  156. physically, bodily, in the space-time matter universe.

  157. And some of you say, Well, wait a minute.

  158. I'm not so sure that I can believe all of this.

  159. I mean, maybe these women, they're so exhausted.

  160. They're so grieving.

  161. They've got this unprocessed trauma from having witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus.

  162. Maybe they're hallucinating.

  163. Maybe they're imagining things.

  164. And if you think that, you're actually not the first to doubt and to dismiss their story.

  165. In fact, in verse 9, it says,

  166. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the others.

  167. And then in verse 11, it says,

  168. But they did not believe the women because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

  169. If the resurrection of Jesus seems like nonsense to you,

  170. if it seems like absolute rubbish,

  171. you are in really good company.

  172. Because it seemed that way to all the apostles as well.

  173. None of them believed it.

  174. Peter, James, John, all of Jesus' male disciples were skeptics.

  175. They said, This is absurd.

  176. This is ridiculous.

  177. This is irrational.

  178. This is unbelievable.

  179. Well, what is it that caused them to change their minds?

  180. What convinced them to go out and leave their homes eventually and give their lives and to even die

  181. for this message that Jesus had been raised to the life of the age to come with a new body?

  182. Why would they die for a lie?

  183. Why would they die for a legend that they made up?

  184. I mean, what is it that convinced them this was true?

  185. And if you notice in verse 12, it says that Peter, however,

  186. he got up and he ran to the tomb, bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,

  187. and he went away wondering, there's that word again,

  188. he was wondering to himself what had happened.

  189. See, Peter was intellectually open-minded and curious enough to go and examine the evidence for himself.

  190. It was absolutely essential that Peter heard that eyewitness testimony from the women,

  191. but he was not content with their conclusions,

  192. and so he wanted to personally and directly analyze the data and test and verify their hypothesis.

  193. And so it was essential that Peter would go to see the empty tomb and the grave clothes.

  194. And it's interesting that Luke emphasizes this.

  195. He says that Peter bent down to look inside the empty tomb,

  196. and he, quote, saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,

  197. and this is what seems to be the thing that causes Peter to wonder in his mind what has just happened.

  198. His mind is wondering, it's marveling, it's amazed.

  199. Why is that?

  200. Well, on Good Friday, Jesus' dead body had been wrapped in linen cloth with about 75 pounds worth of spices.

  201. And those liquid spices, they settled and they solidified like a cocoon around the shape of Jesus' body.

  202. And the only way, humanly speaking, that a body could be removed from such encrusted burial wrappings

  203. would be by cutting those strips of linen cloth from end to end

  204. and laying back each side so that you could pull the body out of the grave clothes.

  205. And when Peter and these women and other disciples came and they saw these strips of linen uncut

  206. and undisturbed, just as they had been when the body of Jesus lay within them,

  207. but the grave clothes were empty in the shape of Jesus' body,

  208. well, they were wondering.

  209. Jesus' resurrection body apparently passed through these grave clothes.

  210. And next week, we're going to talk about how, this is so totally bizarre, I get it.

  211. We're going to talk next week about Jesus' body, right?

  212. This glorified, amazing, crazy body and all of its powers.

  213. But, you know, Peter, at this point, he's heard the eyewitness testimony.

  214. He's heard about the message that God had sent.

  215. He's seen the empty tomb.

  216. He's seen those grave clothes.

  217. But that was not enough for Peter to go out and become a martyr for this message.

  218. Peter's skepticism could only be dispelled with the indisputable evidence

  219. of seeing the resurrected Jesus with his own eyes.

  220. And that's what verse 34 tells us, that the Lord has risen and he appeared to Simon.

  221. He appeared to Peter.

  222. Peter, along with many, many others, we're told in the New Testament,

  223. over 500 people.

  224. They saw the resurrected Jesus with their eyes.

  225. They heard him with their ears.

  226. They touched him with their hands.

  227. And they could not unexperience that experience.

  228. And so for those of you who are here and this message of the bodily resurrection of Jesus,

  229. it just seems like nonsense to you.

  230. We want you to know that you are so welcome here.

  231. Your questions are so welcome here that just like those women, their minds were wondering.

  232. And just like Peter, his mind was wondering what happened.

  233. And we're so glad that you would come and wonder about these things with us.

  234. And if you, like Peter, would like to channel that wondering of your mind,

  235. I would encourage you and invite you into a process of intellectual curiosity,

  236. a process of exploration.

  237. If it were possible for us to build a time machine and to somehow go back and experience these things,

  238. this unique event for ourselves, if we could do that, I would be a very rich man if I could build such a time machine.

  239. But since that's not possible to do for any period of historical inquiry, we can do this.

  240. A couple things for you.

  241. If you're wondering in your mind, here's some things you can do.

  242. First of all, you can, if you've never read the primary sources,

  243. if you've never just sat down and read the eyewitness accounts of the people who saw Jesus,

  244. I would just say, what are you waiting for?

  245. Go and listen to it.

  246. Go and examine the evidence for yourself.

  247. Go and see what it is that they claim to see and hear and touch.

  248. And ask yourself, why would they be making this up?

  249. Why would they die for this?

  250. The second thing you can do is exercise the tools of abductive reasoning.

  251. This is what historians do.

  252. They use the tools of abductive reasoning and inference to the best explanation.

  253. And you can ask yourself the question,

  254. what hypothesis best explains all the historical data with the least amount of strain?

  255. Right?

  256. What best explains this empty tomb and the eyewitness sightings of Jesus,

  257. the transformed lives and the martyrdoms of the disciples, the eyewitnesses?

  258. What best explains the sudden birth of the church?

  259. What best explains this new and utterly distinct worldview that came into being overnight?

  260. What best explains the explosion of the Christian movement throughout the Roman Empire

  261. over the next three centuries in the face of intense persecution?

  262. If Jesus didn't rise from the dead,

  263. what alternative explanation that's plausibly historical can we give for these strange events?

  264. I want to just encourage you that if you engage all the various hypotheses

  265. that this was a fraud, this was a hallucination, this was a legend, this is a metaphor,

  266. I think you'll conclude, you can conclude with your wandering mind

  267. that the bodily resurrection of Jesus makes the best sense of all the data.

  268. And the final thing I want to encourage you to do as you apply your wandering mind

  269. to examine all this evidence,

  270. I want you to consider the possibility that if Jesus died for you and if he's alive,

  271. then you can meet him.

  272. You can actually discover him for yourself.

  273. You can discover the reality that we're talking about.

  274. You might find that as you examine the evidence,

  275. that actually someone is there examining you.

  276. That someone is there eager to show himself to you.

  277. Someone is there who's wanting to enter into a loving relationship with you.

  278. And so that's my first point about wandering minds, okay?

  279. But then I want to talk not just about wandering minds,

  280. I want to talk about burning hearts, burning hearts.

  281. Luke turns our attention to these two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

  282. It's about a seven-mile walk, two and a half miles to walk from Jerusalem back to their home in Emmaus.

  283. And in verse 17, he tells us that their faces are downcast,

  284. which means that their hearts are heavy and downcast.

  285. And then when you look at the end of the story in verse 33, it says this.

  286. Verse 32,

  287. They asked each other,

  288. Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?

  289. What caused this change?

  290. It says that they had downcast hearts,

  291. And then at the end, it says they had burning hearts.

  292. Jesus, as we know, he was crucified on Friday.

  293. These Jews are there for the Passover, which lasted through the weekend.

  294. And now they're walking home, and this stranger walks up alongside them and says,

  295. What's up?

  296. What's the latest?

  297. And they're amazed at his cluelessness,

  298. and so they begin to tell him about Jesus.

  299. And they say in verse 19,

  300. Remember when God redeemed Israel?

  301. Remember the Exodus?

  302. Remember when he brought about a great redemption for his people?

  303. We thought and we hoped that Jesus was going to be that person for us,

  304. that he was going to bring about deliverance for us.

  305. But we're sad.

  306. We're downcast because we're living in a world without redemption.

  307. We're living in a world where no one's going to be delivered.

  308. We're living in a world where death apparently has the last word,

  309. and there is no hope.

  310. They say our friends, they came and told us some strange things earlier today.

  311. They went and visited the tomb of Jesus,

  312. and they said that it was empty, his body wasn't there, that he's alive.

  313. But that is absolutely nonsense.

  314. It's because crucified people stay dead.

  315. Can you imagine this conversation?

  316. Can you imagine telling the resurrected Jesus everything he needs to know about Jesus?

  317. And Jesus begins to turn their downcast hearts into burning hearts.

  318. And here's what it says in verse 25.

  319. He said to them,

  320. How foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  321. He tells these defeated friends that you are, in the Greek he says,

  322. You are a neity.

  323. You are without mind.

  324. You are without understanding.

  325. He says,

  326. Because you're dull in your heads,

  327. and you're kind of slow and sad in your hearts,

  328. you're not grasping the truth.

  329. You're not trusting the truth that God has given through his prophets.

  330. And how does Jesus change their downcast hearts into burning hearts?

  331. Well, he says in verse 26,

  332. He says,

  333. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things,

  334. and then enter his glory?

  335. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  336. he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself.

  337. You know, it's amazing to me that the first thing that Jesus does after defeating death,

  338. the first thing he does after his resurrection,

  339. is he gives a fresh reading,

  340. a fresh exposition,

  341. a fresh interpretation of the Bible.

  342. Can you imagine sitting in this master class with Jesus?

  343. Jesus.

  344. These downcast disciples,

  345. they'd been reading their Bible,

  346. but they'd been reading it through an interpretive grid

  347. that was causing them to miss its meaning.

  348. And so Jesus comes to them and he says,

  349. I have the golden key

  350. that can unlock the deepest meaning of God's word.

  351. He says to them,

  352. I have fresh new lenses for you

  353. that when you put them on,

  354. you will be able to see as you were meant to see

  355. with fresh eyes

  356. in a way that will turn your sad and downcast hearts

  357. into burning hearts.

  358. And he says,

  359. let me unpack for you

  360. the truest truths of the universe

  361. from God himself.

  362. And Jesus says,

  363. look,

  364. when you read Moses,

  365. when you read the prophets,

  366. when you read the Psalms,

  367. when you read what we call the Old Testament,

  368. he says,

  369. I want you to look at what God is revealing

  370. about his Messiah,

  371. and I want you to look at what he's revealing

  372. about me.

  373. And in verse 26,

  374. he says,

  375. did not the Messiah have to suffer,

  376. that is to be crucified,

  377. and did not the Messiah then

  378. have to enter into his glory,

  379. that is to be resurrected?

  380. How does this question from Jesus

  381. put fire into the downcast hearts

  382. of his disciples

  383. and make them burn with zeal?

  384. Jesus begins to go through

  385. all the historical precedents,

  386. all of the prophetic promises,

  387. all the psalmist's prayers,

  388. and he shows his disciples

  389. a pattern that they just cannot see.

  390. And I imagine he began

  391. at the beginning.

  392. He goes back to Genesis, right?

  393. And he takes them through

  394. Genesis 3.15.

  395. That great mother promise,

  396. that first announcement

  397. of the gospel

  398. that says that the offspring

  399. of the woman

  400. is going to come

  401. and be terribly wounded,

  402. but is going to crush

  403. the head of the serpent.

  404. That that great representative

  405. of the human race

  406. is going to come

  407. and he's going to suffer horribly,

  408. but he will trample on evil

  409. and he will triumph in glory.

  410. And I imagine Jesus

  411. just begins there

  412. and he works them through

  413. the book of Genesis,

  414. and when he's done with that,

  415. he goes on into Exodus,

  416. and he says,

  417. you remember how Israel's sufferings

  418. increased in Egypt

  419. until it got to the screaming point?

  420. And then redemption came,

  421. and then glory came,

  422. and he takes them through Exodus

  423. and on into Leviticus

  424. and Numbers and Deuteronomy,

  425. and he goes out into Joshua,

  426. Judges, Samuel, and Kings,

  427. and he says,

  428. don't you remember that

  429. when Israel cried to the Lord

  430. and her sufferings,

  431. then God would raise up judges

  432. and kings to deliver his people?

  433. And he goes on into the Psalms,

  434. I'm sure,

  435. and he talked about

  436. how God's king

  437. suffers terribly,

  438. how God's king is rejected

  439. by the nations,

  440. he's rejected by even his own people,

  441. and yet he cries out to God

  442. and God rescues him,

  443. God vindicates him,

  444. and then I'm sure Jesus went on

  445. into the prophets,

  446. he went to Isaiah,

  447. Isaiah chapters 40 to 66,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  448. and he said,

  449. look,

  450. look at the servant of Yahweh

  451. who suffers

  452. because he's taking on to himself

  453. all the sin and the punishment

  454. of other people,

  455. but then notice how he's glorified

  456. and he carries all of his beloved people

  457. to glory

  458. as their savior.

  459. If we had all day today,

  460. it wouldn't be enough

  461. to explore this amazing question

  462. that Jesus asked in verse 26,

  463. was it not necessary,

  464. was it not a divine necessity

  465. that the Messiah must suffer these things

  466. and then enter his glory?

  467. Jesus is telling us

  468. that the scriptures

  469. come to their climax

  470. in the suffering and glory

  471. of God's Messiah.

  472. Now how might this

  473. Easter Sunday Bible study

  474. with the resurrected Jesus

  475. transform our downcast hearts

  476. into burning hearts?

  477. How might this put fire in us

  478. and cause them to burn

  479. with zeal?

  480. I want to suggest

  481. three points of application.

  482. Number one,

  483. that we need to apply

  484. the Messiah scriptures

  485. to our lives.

  486. The experience of the burning heart

  487. comes from the scriptures

  488. freshly read

  489. and properly interpreted.

  490. If one of the first things

  491. that the glorified

  492. and resurrected Messiah did

  493. when he stepped out of the tomb

  494. to begin his new creation

  495. was to open up the scriptures

  496. to teach us

  497. what should be one of the first things

  498. that we do

  499. when we step out of the bed

  500. to begin a new day.

  501. The more we read,

  502. the more we understand

  503. the story and the scriptures

  504. about the Messiah,

  505. the more the resurrected Jesus

  506. will cause our downcast hearts

  507. to catch fire

  508. and begin to burn.

  509. And if you don't have

  510. a scripture reading plan,

  511. I've printed a bunch

  512. of these for you.

  513. It's called

  514. the Essential 100 Plan.

  515. It takes you through

  516. 50 readings of the Old Testament,

  517. 50 readings of the New Testament.

  518. It's back there

  519. on the back table.

  520. It's also with the welcome gifts

  521. in our community hall.

  522. And I'd encourage you

  523. to begin a new day tomorrow

  524. reading the Messiah scriptures.

  525. The second application

  526. I would like to make

  527. is that we need to apply

  528. the Messiah's sufferings

  529. to our lives.

  530. These downcast disciples,

  531. they thought that

  532. the suffering

  533. and crucified Messiah

  534. was the devastation

  535. of all hope

  536. for being redeemed

  537. and delivered by God.

  538. But Jesus says to them,

  539. no.

  540. The suffering

  541. and crucifixion

  542. of the Messiah

  543. was a divine necessity.

  544. There was no other way

  545. for God to redeem you

  546. from your sin,

  547. for God to deliver you

  548. from death.

  549. And you see,

  550. when God transformed

  551. that dead body

  552. of the Messiah,

  553. and He brought Him

  554. into the glory

  555. of a new

  556. and resurrected body,

  557. God was vindicating,

  558. God was validating

  559. all the claims

  560. that Jesus made

  561. for Himself

  562. about being the Messiah.

  563. That on that Easter day,

  564. in that resurrection,

  565. God was giving

  566. His verdict

  567. on the Messiah's suffering.

  568. And the resurrection

  569. is God's way

  570. of saying to us

  571. that what the Messiah

  572. accomplished

  573. in His suffering

  574. on the cross

  575. was effective

  576. for you.

  577. That His

  578. atoning sacrifice

  579. for your sins

  580. in your place

  581. was utterly

  582. satisfactory

  583. to God.

  584. And that there's

  585. nothing more

  586. that needs to be done

  587. for you to be

  588. redeemed.

  589. Right?

  590. The new glory

  591. of the resurrected Messiah

  592. shows us

  593. the sufficiency

  594. and the finality

  595. of Jesus'

  596. sufferings

  597. in our place.

  598. It shows us

  599. that the resurrection

  600. is actually not

  601. the reversal

  602. of a defeat.

  603. The resurrection

  604. is the manifestation

  605. of a victory.

  606. And that

  607. vicarious

  608. and victorious

  609. suffering

  610. of the Messiah

  611. for you

  612. and in your place,

  613. that is what will

  614. change your downcast heart

  615. into a burning heart.

  616. The third thing

  617. I think we need to do

  618. is to apply

  619. not just the Messiah's

  620. scriptures

  621. and not just the Messiah's

  622. sufferings,

  623. we need to apply

  624. the Messiah's

  625. glory to our lives.

  626. I read a story

  627. this past week

  628. about an Old Testament

  629. scholar in Australia.

  630. His name

  631. was Frank Anderson

  632. and he died

  633. in 2020.

  634. And in his

  635. later years

  636. as he was getting

  637. physically run down

  638. and there was just

  639. not a lot of strength

  640. left in him,

  641. you would go

  642. and you would ask him,

  643. you'd say,

  644. Frank,

  645. how's it going?

  646. And Frank would respond

  647. and he would say,

  648. oh,

  649. I'm not suffering

  650. from anything

  651. a good resurrection

  652. can't fix.

  653. Don't you love that?

  654. This Old Testament

  655. scholar Frank,

  656. he understood

  657. the pattern

  658. of the Messiah's

  659. scriptures

  660. scriptures

  661. and therefore

  662. he understood

  663. the pattern

  664. of the Messiah

  665. himself

  666. and therefore

  667. he understood

  668. the pattern

  669. of all who

  670. belong to the Messiah.

  671. Friends,

  672. that pattern

  673. is first suffering

  674. then glory

  675. and

  676. we

  677. are

  678. living our lives

  679. between

  680. the completed

  681. resurrection

  682. of Jesus

  683. in the past

  684. and the coming

  685. resurrection

  686. of our bodies

  687. in the future

  688. and that means

  689. that we can have

  690. burning hearts

  691. now in the present

  692. because our God

  693. is planning to do

  694. for us

  695. what he did

  696. to our Messiah.

  697. That is,

  698. our suffering

  699. will turn

  700. into glory.

  701. And let me just

  702. read to you

  703. a few words

  704. about this coming

  705. glory from the

  706. apostle Paul.

  707. He says in

  708. Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  709. he says,

  710. we eagerly await

  711. a savior from heaven,

  712. the Lord Jesus Christ

  713. who by the power

  714. that enables him

  715. to bring everything

  716. under his control

  717. will transform

  718. our lowly bodies

  719. so that they will be

  720. like his glorious body.

  721. Paul says in

  722. 2 Corinthians chapter 4

    2 Corinthians 4:14

  723. verse 14,

  724. he says,

  725. we know

  726. that the one

  727. who raised the Lord

  728. Jesus from the dead

  729. will also raise us

  730. with Jesus

  731. so that what is mortal

  732. may be swallowed up

  733. by life.

  734. And then Paul says

  735. in Romans 8,

  736. he says,

  737. if the spirit of him

  738. who raised Jesus

  739. from the dead

  740. is living in you,

  741. he who raised Christ

  742. from the dead

  743. will also give life

  744. to your mortal bodies

  745. because of his spirit

  746. who lives in you.

  747. And so the question

  748. today is,

  749. friends,

  750. what kind of heart

  751. do you have?

  752. Do you have

  753. a downcast heart?

  754. Do you want

  755. a burning heart?

  756. Do you want

  757. a heart that's filled

  758. with the very spirit

  759. of the one

  760. who raised Christ

  761. from the dead?

  762. Do you want

  763. a heart that's able

  764. to say,

  765. even in the midst

  766. of the most horrific

  767. suffering,

  768. oh, I'm not suffering

  769. from anything

  770. a good resurrection

  771. cannot fix.

  772. You see,

  773. if our suffering

  774. Messiah has been glorified,

  775. if he's been raised

  776. from the dead,

  777. then this guarantees

  778. for us a hopeful

  779. and a joyful future

  780. in which God

  781. will raise all

  782. who belong to Jesus

  783. and he will,

  784. in fact,

  785. resurrect the whole

  786. material world.

  787. And if this is

  788. our future,

  789. friends,

  790. everything is going

  791. to be okay.

  792. Everything that is sad

  793. is going to become

  794. untrue.

  795. All that is broken

  796. is going to be mended.

  797. All that is causing

  798. our hearts to be heavy

  799. and downcast,

  800. it's going to be put

  801. to rest.

  802. Your life,

  803. like the Messiah's life,

  804. is not going to end

  805. in suffering.

  806. It's going to end

  807. in glory.

  808. And that is what turns

  809. a downcast heart

  810. into a burning heart.

  811. So,

  812. wandering minds,

  813. burning hearts,

  814. and the last thing

  815. is opening eyes.

  816. And again,

  817. don't worry

  818. because this third point

  819. is much,

  820. much shorter

  821. than the first two points,

  822. okay?

  823. Opening eyes.

  824. Jesus has just given

  825. the most mind-blowing

  826. Bible study

  827. in the history

  828. of the world.

  829. The downcast hearts

  830. of these disciples

  831. are changing

  832. from,

  833. into burning hearts

  834. and they say,

  835. Jesus,

  836. we don't want this

  837. to end.

  838. We want this

  839. to keep going on

  840. and so they strongly

  841. urge him to stay.

  842. They say,

  843. stay with us.

  844. Please come.

  845. And eat with us.

  846. And how does Jesus respond

  847. when people plead to him

  848. and request of him,

  849. please,

  850. please give us more?

  851. It says that Jesus

  852. shared the table

  853. with these two travelers

  854. and in the same way

  855. that he shared

  856. that last supper

  857. with his disciples,

  858. right,

  859. when he took,

  860. blessed,

  861. broke,

  862. and gave the bread,

  863. it says that he took,

  864. blessed,

  865. broke,

  866. and gave the bread

  867. to them.

  868. And when he shared

  869. this meal with them,

  870. what happens

  871. to their eyes?

  872. It says that their eyes

  873. are opened.

  874. It says that they,

  875. they begin to recognize

  876. the resurrected Jesus.

  877. They're given

  878. a new understanding.

  879. And you see,

  880. this is a clue

  881. as to why we break

  882. the bread

  883. at this table

  884. every Sunday.

  885. because it's an opportunity

  886. for the resurrected Jesus

  887. to reveal himself

  888. to us

  889. in a fresh and deep way.

  890. And it's an opportunity

  891. for us to experience

  892. the very presence

  893. and the power

  894. of the living one

  895. as the bread

  896. is broken.

  897. This table,

  898. I think,

  899. goes a long way

  900. to explain

  901. what it is about

  902. Christianity

  903. that grasps us

  904. and that holds us

  905. in the face

  906. of so much

  907. that is wrong

  908. with the world,

  909. so much that's wrong

  910. with the church,

  911. so much that's wrong

  912. with our very selves.

  913. And I want you

  914. to think about this

  915. as we prepare

  916. to come to this table

  917. in just a moment.

  918. I want you to remember

  919. that first meal

  920. that's recorded

  921. for us in the Bible.

  922. You remember that first meal

  923. in the Bible?

  924. It says there

  925. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:6

  926. verse 6,

  927. the woman took

  928. some of the fruit

  929. and ate it.

  930. She gave it to her husband

  931. and he ate it

  932. and then the eyes

  933. of both of them

  934. were opened.

  935. And they knew

  936. that they were naked.

  937. This is the beginning

  938. of all of our woes.

  939. This is the beginning

  940. of all the cursedness,

  941. all the heaviness

  942. that came upon

  943. our human race.

  944. Death itself

  945. can be traced

  946. all the way back

  947. to that meal

  948. and that moment

  949. of rebellion

  950. where the whole creation

  951. became subject

  952. to decay

  953. and futility

  954. and absolute sorrow

  955. and misery.

  956. But now,

  957. here in this story

  958. is an echo

  959. of that story

  960. but in this story

  961. it's the meal,

  962. the first meal

  963. of the new creation

  964. where Jesus says

  965. in verse 30,

  966. it says he took

  967. the bread,

  968. he blessed it,

  969. he broke it,

  970. he gave it to them

  971. and the eyes of them

  972. were both,

  973. what?

  974. Opened.

  975. But this time

  976. what did they see?

  977. This time

  978. they recognized

  979. Jesus.

  980. It says their eyes

  981. were opened

  982. and they knew

  983. Jesus.

  984. You see,

  985. at this table

  986. and in this meal

  987. disciples for over

  988. 2,000 years,

  989. disciples around the world

  990. and every culture today

  991. have discovered

  992. that the long curse

  993. on the human race

  994. has in fact been broken

  995. and that death itself

  996. has been defeated

  997. and that bursting in

  998. upon this world

  999. of decay

  1000. and absolute sorrow

  1001. is God's new creation

  1002. that's brimming

  1003. with life,

  1004. it's brimming with joy,

  1005. it's brimming with power,

  1006. it's brimming with

  1007. new possibilities

  1008. because Christ

1009. is risen from the dead.

  1010. And so the question

  1011. for us is

1012. as we come to this table

  1013. are you hungry

  1014. for all that?

  1015. and do you want

  1016. your eyes

  1017. to be open

  1018. to Jesus?

1019. And even more than that

  1020. are you ready

  1021. to sit down

  1022. and to eat

  1023. and share this feast

  1024. with the resurrected

  1025. Jesus himself?

1026. I hope that you are.

1027. In the name of the Father,

  1028. Son, and Holy Spirit.

  1029. Amen.
