  4. Good morning. I'm Melissa Arseniega and I'm part of the El Cerrito Kensington Community Group, an Oikos group, and a deacon.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from Paul's letter to the Philippians, chapter 2, verses 12 to 30, as printed in your liturgy.

    Philippians 2:12–30

  6. A reading from Paul's letter to the Philippians.

  7. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence,

  8. continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  9. For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

  10. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure,

  11. children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.

  12. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.

  13. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

  14. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on this sacrifice and service, coming from your faith,

  15. I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

  16. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

  17. I hope in the Lord Jesus to send you Timothy to you soon,

  18. that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you.

  19. I have no one else like him who will show genuine concern for your welfare.

  20. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

  21. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father,

  22. he has served with me in the work of the gospel.

  23. I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.

  24. And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

  25. But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus,

  26. my brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier,

  27. who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.

  28. For he longs for all of you and is distressed, because you heard he was ill.

  29. Indeed, he was ill and almost died.

  30. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but also on me,

  31. to spare me sorrow upon sorrow.

  32. Therefore, I am all the more eager to send him,

  33. so that when you see him again, you may be glad,

  34. and I may have less anxiety.

  35. So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and honor people like him.

  36. Because he almost died for the work of Christ,

  37. he risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.

  38. This is the word of the Lord.

  39. So back earlier in January, our very own David Lopez,

  40. he put me onto this guy.

  41. His name is Wesley Huff.

  42. Anybody heard of Wesley Huff?

  43. A couple of you, thanks.

  44. If you haven't had a chance to check out Wesley Huff, I highly recommend him.

  45. He's this up-and-coming Christian apologist,

  46. incredibly sharp, incredibly articulate.

  47. He's doing his PhD in New Testament right now at the University of Toronto,

  48. and he does this podcast called the AC Podcast.

  49. It stands for Apologetics Canada.

  50. And I highly recommend that you check him out.

  51. And he's actually been invited onto some pretty large stages recently.

  52. He was invited onto Joe Rogan's podcast.

  53. It's like the most widely listened to podcast in the world.

  54. And then just a month ago, it's this podcast I listened to just this past week.

  55. It's Andrew Schultz's podcast.

  56. Andrew Schultz is like this big-time comedian.

  57. He's got his own Netflix special.

  58. And, you know, whatever you think about Andrew Schultz and Andrew Rogan

  59. and, you know, kind of the bro-y manosphere thing,

  60. at least we can say these are huge audiences that Wesley Huff is getting in front of.

  61. I mean, President Trump was on both of these podcasts, like, not long before Wesley Huff.

  62. So it's pretty interesting, right, to see this Christian getting on this pretty large stage.

  63. And, you know, so I was listening to Wesley Huff and Andrew Schultz

  64. and his, you know, kind of crass comedian buddies on this podcast earlier this week.

  65. And he said something there that I really think gets at the heart

  66. of what Paul's trying to communicate to the church in Philippi and to us today in our passage.

  67. And what Wesley Huff said was, you know, for Christians,

  68. reading the Bible and praying and going to church and, you know,

  69. doing all these spiritual practices,

  70. these are not the fruit of the Christian life,

  71. but they're more like water.

  72. They're more like how we water the Christian life.

  73. And while sure God wants us to water the soil of our hearts,

  74. what we will ultimately be judged upon is not simply how well we watered,

  75. but whether or not our lives bore fruit.

  76. See, that's Paul's vision for the church in Philippi.

  77. That's our vision here at Christ Church.

  78. Not just a well-watered church, but a fruitful church.

  79. Not simply a learned church, but a living church.

  80. Paul doesn't just want the church to accept the gospel of Jesus,

  81. but to apply the gospel of Jesus in our everyday lives.

  82. Or as he will say here in our text,

  83. to work out our salvation.

  84. To work out our salvation.

  85. So remember last time we were in the book of Philippians,

  86. we looked and marveled at that brilliantly concise summary,

  87. that core confession, that amazing statement of Christianity

  88. in the beginning of Philippians chapter 2 called the Christ hymn, right?

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  89. The Christ hymn.

  90. But today what we find is that Paul is not just sharing it as a creed to confess,

  91. but more so as a calling to carry out in our lives.

  92. He's sharing it because he wants the church to live a certain way.

  93. So remember what Paul's doing.

  94. He's imploring these Christians living in this patriotic Roman colony.

  95. He says in chapter 1 verse 27,

  96. to make it their primary aim to be citizens of the gospel of Christ,

  97. distinct citizens, right?

  98. Distinct citizens of a distinct kingdom.

  99. A kingdom where the king, God himself,

  100. in the person of Jesus Christ,

  101. took on not just humanity,

  102. but slavery and crucifixion and obedience to his eternal father

  103. on the way to glory and exaltation.

  104. And what Paul wants for the church is to, quote,

  105. have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,

  106. who humbled himself by becoming obedient to death,

  107. even death on a cross.

  108. Paul commands the church to live with selfless service

  109. and humble obedience just like their maker and their Messiah.

  110. And that is what comes right before our passage today, okay?

  111. Where he writes in verse 12, we can look down at that now.

  112. Therefore, my dear friends, or in the Greek,

  113. therefore, my beloved.

  114. Therefore, meaning because, or as a result of what God has revealed to us

  115. in Christ, crucified and exalted,

  116. as a result of what God has shown us

  117. about who he is as God

  118. and what it means to be ideally human.

  119. Therefore, my beloved Philippians, verse 12,

  120. as you have always obeyed, like Christ obeyed,

  121. and not only in my presence when I was with you,

  122. but now much more in my absence,

  123. continue to work out your salvation

  124. with fear and trembling.

  125. He's saying,

  126. I saw you obey when I was with you,

  127. when we all lived together in the same household,

  128. and even now when we are apart,

  129. I've been very pleased to see and hear about you

  130. all grown up and off to college,

  131. no more parents in the house,

  132. and you're still obeying great.

  133. But hey, as your spiritual father,

  134. this is still my command to you,

  135. keep continuing to obey.

  136. Or to give it even more texture and meaning,

  137. continue to work out your salvation

  138. with fear and trembling.

  139. So in one sense,

  140. he's not saying anything new, obey.

  141. But in case you're tempted to, you know,

  142. just kind of check out here,

  143. of course this pastor's gonna come up

  144. and preach a sermon about obeying God.

  145. Just hang in there with me, okay?

  146. And let's try to catch the nuance.

  147. It's not just obey,

  148. but it's continue to work out your salvation

  149. with fear and trembling.

  150. So the question to ask is,

  151. what is Paul trying to get at

  152. with this more specific language,

  153. work out your salvation?

  154. Why does he say it that way?

  155. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  156. Well, let me start by clarifying

  157. what this doesn't mean, okay?

  158. When Paul says to continue

  159. to work out your salvation,

  160. it's very important to distinguish

  161. working for your salvation

  162. from working out your salvation.

  163. Remember, this is the same Apostle Paul

  164. who's written elsewhere in his other letters

  165. that salvation, being restored

  166. into a right status and relationship with God,

  167. it isn't earned by good works of merit,

  168. but received by grace through faith.

  169. Paul isn't departing from this core truth

  170. of the good news about Jesus.

  171. He's not telling them to work for

  172. or earn their salvation.

  173. So the question is, okay, what does he mean

  174. when he says work out your salvation?

  175. Well, let's define salvation.

  176. What is salvation?

  177. You see, for many of us,

  178. salvation is simply about what happens when I die.

  179. Do I go to heaven or do I go to hell?

  180. And yes, the scriptures do teach

  181. that heaven is real and hell is real

  182. and eternal life is real

  183. and judgment is real,

  184. but these truths never constitute

  185. the core essence of what salvation is

  186. and what it means to be saved.

  187. See, according to the scriptures,

  188. according to Jesus,

  189. Jesus said this,

  190. I have another slide in,

  191. oh, sorry, in John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  192. Can you pull that up for us, Ben?

  193. Jesus said this,

  194. and this is eternal life.

  195. Not that you go to heaven.

  196. And this is eternal life

  197. that they know you,

  198. the only true God,

  199. and Jesus Christ,

  200. whom you have sent.

  201. So see, according to the scriptures,

  202. the essence of salvation

  203. is not about destination.

  204. It's about relationship.

  205. Paul confirms this as well,

  206. Romans chapter five,

  207. 2 Corinthians chapter five,

  208. Colossians chapter one,

  209. that to be saved is to be rescued

  210. from alienation from God

  211. and to be restored into communion with God.

  212. Salvation is reunion

  213. with the starting point

  214. and the sustainer of all of life,

  215. the maker of our souls.

  216. That's what salvation is.

  217. So again, salvation is about so much more

  218. than the day you die.

  219. It's about the life you live

  220. in union with the life giver.

  221. And if this is true,

  222. if this is true that salvation

  223. is not primarily about your future,

  224. eternal destination,

  225. but about your union with God,

  226. then that means that salvation

  227. can be spoken of

  228. as something that's past,

  229. present, and future

  230. all at the same time.

  231. So if you look at Paul's letters,

  232. you can find him talking about

  233. how we were saved in the past,

  234. like before the foundations of the earth,

  235. Ephesians one,

  236. or at the cross,

  237. before we were even born,

  238. Colossians chapter two,

  239. or at the time of our conversions,

  240. Titus chapter three.

  241. But Paul also talks about

  242. how we are being saved presently,

  243. 1 Corinthians chapter one,

  244. 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  245. and then how we will be saved

  246. in the future.

  247. Romans chapter five,

  248. Romans 13,

  249. Philippians one,

  250. he who began a good work

  251. and you will bring it

  252. to completion

  253. at the day of Christ Jesus.

  254. It's kind of like marriage, okay?

  255. I was married,

  256. I am married,

  257. and Chelsea willing,

  258. I will be married,

  259. all right?

  260. All that to say here is

  261. when Paul is saying

  262. continue to work out

  263. your salvation

  264. with fear and trembling,

  265. he's getting at the present,

  266. the present aspect of salvation,

  267. the present aspect of being

  268. in a dynamic

  269. and ongoing relationship

  270. with God.

  271. He's calling the church

  272. to presently

  273. and continually live out

  274. their renewed

  275. and ever deepening union

  276. with their infinite

  277. and eternal God.

  278. He's saying don't just

  279. receive salvation,

  280. don't just receive

  281. some past salvation,

  282. and don't just hope

  283. and wait for some

  284. future salvation.

  285. He's saying live in it

  286. now and forever,

  287. work it out in your life

  288. today.

  289. And not just casually,

  290. he says,

  291. but with fear and trembling

  292. because this isn't just

  293. any kind of casual relationship,

  294. it's a relationship

  295. with the thrice holy God,

  296. right?

  297. The great I am.

  298. And maybe this gives

  299. some of us pause,

  300. this idea of fear

  301. and trembling

  302. in our relationship

  303. with God

  304. because, you know,

  305. so much of our soft,

  306. secular, heavily therapeutic

  307. Western culture

  308. tells us that healthy,

  309. loving, safe relationships

  310. should not involve

  311. any kind of fear

  312. or trembling.

  313. And so much of the

  314. American church

  315. with its, you know,

  316. Jesus is my homeboy,

  317. come just as you are,

  318. his arms are open wide,

  319. authenticity over everything,

  320. self-expressive individualism,

  321. so many popular

  322. therapeutic versions

  323. of American Christianity

  324. go out of their way

  325. to downplay

  326. the fear of God

  327. as if it were incompatible

  328. with the love of God.

  329. But let me try to dissuade you

  330. of this false dichotomy,

  331. this wrong-headed way

  332. of thinking

  333. that runs counter

  334. to the teachings of Jesus

  335. and the Scriptures.

  336. Now, some Christians

  337. want to say fear

  338. and trembling here

  339. is just about reverence

  340. and respect.

  341. And sure,

  342. that is definitely

  343. a part of working out

  344. our salvation

  345. with fear and trembling,

  346. but I think

  347. he actually means

  348. fear and trembling here.

  349. Let me try to illustrate that.

  350. So, for example,

  351. you know,

  352. I personally find gorillas

  353. like fascinating,

  354. glorious,

  355. like amazing creatures.

  356. And many of us,

  357. we have Oakland Zoo passes

  358. and we can get

  359. like really close

  360. to these huge,

  361. majestic,

  362. grizzly bears, right?

  363. And on the one hand,

  364. these creatures

  365. are marvelous

  366. and they awe us

  367. and they shock us.

  368. Like think of the intelligence

  369. of a silverback gorilla,

  370. right?

  371. So intelligent,

  372. it could communicate

  373. with sign language,

  374. it could be so gentle,

  375. it could pick those

  376. little flies, right,

  377. off of its baby,

  378. it could unpeel a banana

  379. with its fingers,

  380. incredible dexterity,

  381. it's amazing, right?

  382. And it's even endearing,

  383. right?

  384. It's heartwarming, right?

  385. This massive gorilla.

  386. But then at the very same time,

  387. this silverback

  388. could also rip my arms off,

  389. right?

  390. It could.

  391. If I step beyond my boundaries,

  392. then interact with the gorilla

  393. in a rightful

  394. and natural way.

  395. So even while we can

  396. and should marvel at

  397. and enjoy a silverback

  398. or a grizzly

  399. within a properly

  400. ordered relationship,

  401. it is also right of us

  402. to fear and tremble

  403. before these creatures

  404. that we at the same time

  405. adore, love, and honor.

  406. Think about maybe

  407. a cliff, right?

  408. The cliffs of Moor in Ireland

  409. or the edge of El Capitan

  410. in Yosemite,

  411. these majestic cliffs

  412. of such great beauty

  413. and splendor

  414. that fill our hearts

  415. with wonder and awe

  416. that we hope to preserve

  417. and we fight to preserve

  418. and honor.

  419. And yet,

  420. is it not also true

  421. that at the very same time

  422. that we marvel,

  423. standing atop these cliffs,

  424. we also stand

  425. at the edge of these cliffs

  426. with rightful fear

  427. and trembling

  428. because we know

  429. that there is a right,

  430. good, beautiful,

  431. and natural way

  432. to interact with these cliffs

  433. or like with a grizzly bear.

  434. And then there are wrong,

  435. dangerous,

  436. and unnatural ways

  437. to interact with them.

  438. Fear and trembling

  439. are right,

  440. natural human responses

  441. in the presence

  442. of greatness and power.

  443. So if fear and trembling

  444. are appropriate

  445. in the presence

  446. of a silverback,

  447. how much more appropriate

  448. are fear and trembling

  449. in the presence

  450. of the holy maker

  451. of the silverback,

  452. maker of our souls?

  453. It really makes complete sense

  454. to work out our salvation,

  455. to live out our relationships

  456. with God

  457. with fear

  458. and trembling.

  459. And it is actually

  460. the enemy

  461. that would whisper

  462. into our ears

  463. not to fear.

  464. You just do you.

  465. Choose your own way.

  466. Go ahead and cross

  467. that boundary

  468. between the creator

  469. and the creature.

  470. There is nothing

  471. to fear

  472. for you will not surely die.

  473. No,

  474. it makes complete sense

  475. to fear

  476. and tremble

  477. at the prospect

  478. of not relating

  479. to God Almighty

  480. as we were naturally

  481. meant to relate to Him,

  482. as His obedient creatures,

  483. as His obedient children.

  484. It's like the Psalms

  485. and the Proverbs say,

  486. the fear of the Lord

  487. is the beginning

  488. of wisdom.

  489. And you know,

  490. the beauty of the gospel

  491. is that while we have

  492. every reason to fear

  493. and tremble

  494. before this holy God

  495. against whom

  496. we have all rebelled

  497. and gone our own way

  498. time and time again,

  499. the beauty of Christianity

  500. is that this God

  501. before whom we ought

  502. to fear and tremble,

  503. He also loves

  504. to lay His strong

  505. yet calming hand

  506. upon us.

  507. He loves to come

  508. near to us

  509. to be more than

  510. a fearful,

  511. frightening presence

  512. in our lives,

  513. but also a kind,

  514. gentle,

  515. calming,

  516. empowering,

  517. and ever-present

  518. presence in our lives.

  519. It's like what

  520. was said of Aslan.

  521. You remember

  522. what they said of Aslan?

  523. It's like,

  524. no, for heaven's sake,

  525. he isn't safe,

  526. but he is good.

  527. He is good.

  528. In Christianity,

  529. the fear of God

  530. and the enjoyment

  531. of God

  532. go hand in hand.

  533. I have another slide.

  534. I want you to see

  535. what the prophet Jeremiah

  536. says,

  537. what God says

  538. through the prophet Jeremiah

  539. to his people.

  540. They've gone astray

  541. again and again,

  542. yet he promises

  543. to restore them.

  544. He says,

  545. behold,

  546. I will bring it

  547. to health

  548. and healing

  549. and I will heal them

  550. and reveal to them

  551. abundance of prosperity

  552. and security.

  553. I will restore

  554. the fortunes of Judah

  555. and the fortunes of Israel

  556. and rebuild them

  557. as they were at first.

  558. I will cleanse them

  559. from all the guilt

  560. of their sin against me

  561. and I will forgive

  562. all the guilt

  563. of their sin

  564. and rebellion against me

  565. and this city

  566. shall be to me

  567. a name of joy,

  568. a praise,

  569. and a glory

  570. before all the nations

  571. of the earth

  572. who shall hear

  573. of all the good

  574. that I do for them.

  575. They shall fear

  576. and tremble

  577. because of all the good

  578. and all the prosperity

  579. I provide for it.

  580. So the fear

  581. and enjoyment of God

  582. can and in fact do

  583. go hand in hand

  584. because God

  585. doesn't just insist

  586. on His way

  587. but He also makes it happen.

  588. He assists us

  589. in His way.

  590. Look with me

  591. at verse 13.

  592. See,

  593. Paul doesn't just call

  594. the church

  595. to work out

  596. their salvation

  597. with fear

  598. and trembling

  599. like go ahead,

  600. keep on trying,

  601. good luck guys.

  602. No,

  603. he says work out

  604. your salvation

  605. with fear

  606. and trembling

  607. for or because

  608. it is God

  609. who works in you

  610. both to will

  611. and to act

  612. in order to fulfill

  613. His good purpose.

  614. See,

  615. Paul isn't calling them

  616. to an onerous

  617. solo grind

  618. but in honoring

  619. shared grace.

  620. This is a God

  621. and Father in heaven

  622. who demands

  623. the highest standard

  624. from His children

  625. and who at the same time

  626. provides for the fulfillment

  627. of that standard

  628. by coming near

  629. and uniting Himself

  630. to us

  631. to work out within us

  632. what He demands of us.

  633. It's like St. Augustine

  634. once said,

  635. grant what thou dost command

  636. and command

  637. what thou wilt.

  638. God isn't a father

  639. standing afar off

  640. with His hands

  641. on His hips

  642. waiting for us

  643. to perform

  644. and attain

  645. to His standards.

  646. No,

  647. He is a father

  648. who is intimately involved

  649. and interested

  650. in us fulfilling

  651. His perfect purposes

  652. and not just

  653. at the level

  654. of our actions

  655. but at the level

  656. of our wills.

  657. It says,

  658. it is God

  659. who works in you

  660. both to will

  661. and to act

  662. in order to fulfill

  663. His good purpose.

  664. This is a God

  665. who changes hearts.

  666. He changes our hearts

  667. to want what He wants.

  668. He strengthens our hands

  669. to do what we were made

  670. to do.

  671. This is a Father

  672. who wants to see us

  673. crush it

  674. in His perfect plan

  675. and who will never

  676. leave us nor forsake us

  677. to have to go it alone.

  678. And isn't that good news?

  679. Isn't that good news?

  680. Now, I know I've spent

  681. most of my time here

  682. this morning

  683. in these first two verses

  684. but this is just

  685. so important.

  686. And I imagine

  687. that this is,

  688. you know,

  689. a multifaceted word

  690. to all of us

  691. this morning.

  692. Continue

  693. to work out

  694. your salvation

  695. with fear and trembling

  696. for it is God

  697. who works in you

  698. both to will

  699. and to act

  700. for His good purpose.

  701. So maybe for some of you

  702. this morning

  703. God's word to you

  704. is that word continue.

  705. You have been living

  706. a life on mission,

  707. a life of service

  708. toward God,

  709. love toward God,

  710. service toward others,

  711. love toward others,

  712. not a perfect life

  713. but a faithful one,

  714. a long obedience

  715. in the right direction.

  716. And your Father in heaven,

  717. maybe He wants you

  718. to hear that He sees you.

  719. Maybe He wants you

  720. to know He sees you.

  721. He sees you in your moments

  722. of wanting to quit,

  723. your moments of doubt

  724. when you're trying

  725. to be faithful

  726. but you wonder

  727. is life in relationship

  728. with God

  729. really supposed

  730. to be this hard?

  731. Is there any point

  732. in faithfulness

  733. and obedience?

  734. Will salvation ever come

  735. for my health,

  736. for my trauma,

  737. for my marriage?

  738. God's word to you

  739. this morning

  740. is to not grow weary

  741. in doing good.

  742. Continue to work out

  743. your salvation

  744. for God is at work

  745. in you

  746. and He has not

  747. left you to yourself.

  748. Maybe for others of us,

  749. God's word to you today

  750. is that it is God

  751. who needs to work in you

  752. both to will

  753. and to act

  754. according to His good purposes.

  755. You've been trying

  756. this Christian life thing

  757. but you are weary

  758. and you are tired

  759. and you feel so unmotivated.

  760. What if God's word

  761. to you this morning

  762. is not try harder

  763. but seek God's work

  764. in you

  765. both to will

  766. and to act?

  767. What if God

  768. is not so much

  769. challenging you this morning

  770. but inviting you

  771. into a collaborative

  772. relationship?

  773. What if your next step

  774. isn't stricter

  775. spiritual disciplines,

  776. right,

  777. to kind of self-manufacture

  778. fruit in your life

  779. but what if He's asking you

  780. to just ask Him?

  781. Ask Him,

  782. see what I will do.

  783. See what I will do.

  784. What if God's word

  785. to you this morning

  786. is that He is just

  787. as much for you

  788. and in fact

  789. even more so

  790. than you are for yourself?

  791. That He is more committed

  792. to His good

  793. and perfect purposes

  794. in your life

  795. and in this world

  796. than anyone else

  797. and you're His workmanship,

  798. His masterpiece

  799. created in Christ Jesus

  800. for good works

  801. which He has prepared

  802. beforehand

  803. that you should walk

  804. in them.

  805. What if God's word

  806. to you this morning

  807. is that even you

  808. cannot get in the way

  809. of God's good

  810. and perfect purposes

  811. for you and the world?

  812. Can you hear Him?

  813. Can you hear Him speak

  814. that word to you

  815. this morning,

  816. these words of invitation,

  817. these words of comfort

  818. comfort in the sovereign power

  819. and ability of God?

  820. But now maybe others of you

  821. need more of a word

  822. of challenge today

  823. or maybe you need both.

  824. Perhaps for you though

  825. today your word

  826. is to work out

  827. your salvation

  828. like now

  829. and with fear

  830. and trembling.

  831. Maybe some of us

  832. have been tempted

  833. to view salvation

  834. as something

  835. I secured in the past

  836. and I'll enjoy

  837. in the future

  838. and in the meantime

  839. I'm going to live

  840. however I want

  841. because I have

  842. my salvation card,

  843. my get out of hell

  844. free card.

  845. But might God

  846. be challenging you

  847. this morning,

  848. convicting you

  849. to work out

  850. your salvation

  851. even today

  852. and every day

  853. with fear

  854. and trembling

  855. remembering that

  856. your life

  857. is not your own.

  858. You are living

  859. your life

  860. in the very presence

  861. of the holy God

  862. of the universe.

  863. Do we live

  864. with that kind

  865. of earnestness

  866. and gravitas?

  867. Are we working out

  868. the implications

  869. of who God is

  870. and what Christ

  871. has done

  872. in our everyday lives,

  873. in our workplaces?

  874. Does the story

  875. of Jesus

  876. have any bearing

  877. on how we manage

  878. our staff?

  879. Does the story

  880. of Jesus

  881. have any bearing

  882. on how we develop

  883. or pursue

  884. or market

  885. that product

  886. or in our relationships?

  887. How we go into

  888. our relationships

  889. with our spouses,

  890. our children,

  891. our parents,

  892. our neighbors?

  893. How are we showing up

  894. every day

  895. as people

  896. who have been saved

  897. by and united

  898. to the divine

  899. suffering servant

  900. and Lord,

  901. Jesus Christ?

  902. How are we showing up?

  903. Are we showing up

  904. as servants

  905. of the suffering servant

  906. or are we showing up

  907. as those

  908. who are living

  909. unworthy

  910. of the gospel,

  911. unworthy

  912. of the citizenship

  913. that he has granted

  914. to us in Christ?

  915. Alright.

  916. So, you know,

  917. I've totally

  918. not budgeted

  919. my time well

  920. with these first

  921. two verses

  922. and we won't have

  923. time to go

  924. verse by verse

  925. through the rest

  926. of this passage.

  927. But I want you

  928. to look with me

  929. at verse 14

  930. to see how Paul

  931. commands that we

  932. show up

  933. in our day-to-day lives,

  934. how we work out

  935. our salvation

  936. with fear

  937. and trembling.

  938. This is what it looks

  939. like when God

  940. is at work in us

  941. to will

  942. and to act

  943. in fulfillment

  944. of his good purposes.

  945. Verse 14 says,

  946. do everything

  947. without grumbling

  948. or arguing.

  949. Okay?

  950. A tough one, right?

  951. Who of us

  952. can stand up

  953. to this?

  954. And notice the command

  955. here isn't

  956. thou shalt not grumble

  957. or thou shalt not argue.

  958. The command is

  959. do everything

  960. without grumbling

  961. or arguing.

  962. This is a totalizing

  963. command.

  964. Paul's divinely

  965. inspired words here

  966. are laying a claim

  967. on the whole

  968. of our lives.

  969. Everything we do

  970. and he is commanding

  971. the whole manner

  972. of our lives.

  973. We are to do

  974. everything

  975. as obedient servants

  976. of Christ.

  977. Everything we do

  978. falls under the umbrella

  979. of the working out

  980. of our salvation.

  981. And we are to work

  982. out that salvation

  983. with fear

  984. and trembling

  985. but without

  986. grumbling

  987. and arguing.

  988. So that,

  989. verse 15,

  990. you may become

  991. blameless and pure

  992. children of God

  993. without fault

  994. in a warped

  995. and crooked generation

  996. among whom

  997. you will shine

  998. like stars

  999. in the sky

  1000. as you hold

  1001. firmly

  1002. to the word

  1003. of life.

  1004. And you know,

  1005. this is another sermon

  1006. in and of itself

  1007. about grumbling

  1008. and arguing

  1009. but good thing,

  1010. you know,

  1011. American Christians

  1012. don't struggle

  1013. with that, right?

  1014. But my question is,

  1015. of all the things

  1016. that Paul could have

  1017. named as antithetical

  1018. to Jesus' way,

  1019. why does he say

  1020. do everything

  1021. without grumbling

  1022. and arguing?

  1023. Why not like

  1024. do everything

  1025. and don't murder,

  1026. don't rape,

  1027. don't steal,

  1028. do everything

  1029. without hating

  1030. and fighting?

  1031. Well,

1032. if you are an astute

  1033. reader in Philippi,

  1034. you would catch

  1035. a connection

  1036. Paul is making here

  1037. when he uses

  1038. the words

  1039. grumbling,

  1040. arguing,

  1041. warped

  1042. and crooked

  1043. generation

  1044. and shining

  1045. like stars

  1046. in the sky.

  1047. He's actually

  1048. alluding

  1049. to Israel

  1050. in the wilderness.

  1051. In Exodus

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  1052. chapter 16

  1053. and 17,

  1054. the people

  1055. of Israel

  1056. are characterized

  1057. by just that,

  1058. grumbling

  1059. and arguing.

  1060. And in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 32 chapter mention

  1061. chapter 32,

  1062. Moses rebukes

  1063. the people of Israel

  1064. for being a crooked

  1065. and twisted

  1066. generation.

  1067. And then hundreds

  1068. of years later,

  1069. the prophet Daniel,

  1070. he prophesies

  1071. that even though

  1072. the people of Israel

  1073. have strayed

  1074. again and again

  1075. and again

  1076. as grumbling,

  1077. argumentative

  1078. and crooked people,

  1079. God would still

  1080. one day redeem

  1081. some of them

  1082. and make them shine

  1083. like stars

  1084. in the sky.

  1085. So basically,

  1086. Paul is using

  1087. the ancient Israelites

  1088. as a negative example

  1089. of grumbling

  1090. and arguing,

  1091. as an opposite example

  1092. to Jesus

  1093. in the Christ.

  1094. And Paul is basically

  1095. laying out two ways

  1096. to live.

  1097. The pure and blameless

  1098. Jesus way

  1099. of humility,

  1100. service,

  1101. obedience,

  1102. fear,

  1103. and trembling,

  1104. a way that will

  1105. bring light

  1106. and bear witness

  1107. in our dark

  1108. and twisted generation

  1109. or the crooked

  1110. wilderness way

  1111. of grumbling

  1112. and arguing

  1113. the way that we

  1114. experience in this world

  1115. every day,

  1116. right?

1117. And why Paul singles out

  1118. the grumbling

  1119. and arguing

  1120. of Israel

  1121. in the wilderness

  1122. is not so much

  1123. that grumbling

  1124. and arguing

  1125. are the worst

  1126. imaginable sins

  1127. that one could commit

  1128. but because

  1129. of the hearts

  1130. from which grumbling

  1131. and arguing

  1132. come from.

  1133. You see,

  1134. the sin of grumbling

  1135. isn't simply about

  1136. breaking the thou shalt

  1137. not grumble

  1138. rule,

  1139. all right?

  1140. And my children,

  1141. like,

  1142. they break that

  1143. all the time,

  1144. right?

  1145. But you know,

  1146. when my daughters

  1147. grumble,

  1148. especially when I ask

  1149. them to do things

  1150. that they're not

  1151. excited about,

1152. what do I tell them?

  1153. Stop grumbling?

  1154. Well, yeah,

  1155. I do say that a lot.

  1156. But the best version

  1157. of me says,

  1158. hey,

  1159. you gotta trust me,

  1160. you gotta trust mommy,

  1161. you gotta trust

  1162. what I'm telling you

  1163. to do.

1164. This is for your good,

  1165. it's for the good

  1166. of the family,

1167. it's better for our world,

  1168. and if you keep

  1169. insisting on doing

  1170. otherwise,

  1171. you're gonna regret it.

  1172. See,

  1173. the grumbling of Israel

  1174. was so twisted

  1175. because it reflected

  1176. their entitlement

  1177. and their defiance

  1178. of the authority

  1179. of God,

  1180. their lack of faith

  1181. in His goodness

  1182. and His promises.

1183. It came from a place

  1184. of them thinking

  1185. they deserved better

  1186. and that they also

  1187. knew better

  1188. than God.

  1189. God,

  1190. staying in Egypt

  1191. as slaves

  1192. would have been

  1193. so much better

  1194. than wandering

  1195. in the wilderness

  1196. with you,

  1197. having to trust you

  1198. every day

  1199. for our daily bread.

  1200. We grumble

  1201. because we don't

  1202. trust God's word

  1203. and His ways.

  1204. Paul is saying,

  1205. no,

  1206. verse 16,

  1207. hold firmly

1208. to God's word of life

  1209. instead.

  1210. Hold firmly

  1211. to His word,

  1212. believe it,

  1213. trust it,

  1214. it's good,

  1215. it's true,

  1216. especially as those

  1217. who believe

  1218. that Christ is risen,

  1219. especially as those

  1220. who believe

  1221. that yeah,

  1222. Christ did suffer

  1223. the wilderness

  1224. experience of obedience

1225. unto death on a cross,

  1226. but God exalted Him,

  1227. that's the gospel,

1228. that's the word of life

  1229. that you must hold

  1230. firmly to.

  1231. God exalted Christ

  1232. and He will exalt

  1233. His sons and daughters

  1234. as well.

  1235. And in verses 16 to 18,

  1236. Paul talks about

  1237. how this is

  1238. His ultimate boast,

1239. this is what He wants

  1240. for everyone,

  1241. the whole church,

  1242. everyone that He is

  1243. sacrificing for,

  1244. laboring for,

  1245. ultimately He wants

  1246. their joy in Christ

  1247. at the last day.

  1248. And then He closes

  1249. with two more

  1250. positive examples,

  1251. okay,

  1252. of people living

  1253. as citizens

  1254. of the gospel

  1255. having the same

  1256. mindset as Christ,

  1257. Timothy and Epaphroditus.

  1258. And this could be

  1259. another sermon too,

  1260. but just very briefly,

1261. look at how He describes

  1262. Timothy in verse 20.

1263. I have no one else

  1264. like Him

  1265. who will show

  1266. genuine concern

  1267. for your welfare.

  1268. For everyone looks

  1269. for their own interests,

  1270. right,

  1271. that's that whole

  1272. warped and crooked

  1273. generation,

  1274. everyone looks out

  1275. for their own interests,

1276. not those of Jesus Christ.

1277. We are called to be

  1278. a different kind

  1279. of generation

  1280. with a different

  1281. kind of citizenship.

  1282. Paul says,

  1283. but you know that

  1284. Timothy has proved

  1285. himself to be different,

  1286. right?

  1287. This guy Timothy,

  1288. he genuinely cares

  1289. about you,

  1290. he genuinely cares

  1291. about the things

  1292. of Christ

  1293. more than himself.

1294. And then in verse 29,

  1295. look,

  1296. Paul says to honor

  1297. people also like

  1298. Epaphroditus,

  1299. who,

  1300. verse 30 says,

  1301. almost died

1302. for the work of Christ,

  1303. right?

  1304. He risked his life

1305. for the things of God,

  1306. for the things

  1307. that exalt Christ.

  1308. Another Christ-like example

  1309. in real life,

  1310. in the flesh,

  1311. in the church.

  1312. And the point is,

1313. we all have our roles

  1314. and it is all

  1315. in service of Christ.

  1316. We all have

  1317. an opportunity

  1318. and a calling

  1319. and a command

  1320. to live like Christ,

  1321. carrying on God's work

  1322. in the world,

  1323. whether as a teacher

  1324. or an apologist,

  1325. an assistant pastor

  1326. and evangelist

  1327. like Timothy,

1328. or as just a messenger

  1329. and a care package

  1330. transporter

  1331. like Epaphroditus.

1332. Regardless of what we do

1333. or what happens to us,

  1334. God sees

  1335. and God honors

  1336. such people,

  1337. just as he honored

  1338. and exalted Jesus,

  1339. risen and ascended

  1340. into heaven.

1341. So just to tie all this up,

  1342. the question is,

  1343. will we

  1344. or won't we

  1345. pursue

  1346. this life

  1347. of honor

  1348. and work out

  1349. our salvation

  1350. with fear

  1351. and trembling

  1352. and ultimately

  1353. with life-giving service?

  1354. Timothy and Epaphroditus

  1355. had no idea

  1356. that they were going

  1357. to end up

  1358. in this record

  1359. that we'd be reading

  1360. about 2,000 years later,

  1361. honored

  1362. as Christ-like servants

  1363. in the gospel?

1364. What will be our stories?

  1365. Right?

  1366. I think of that

  1367. Hamilton song,

  1368. Who Lives,

  1369. Who Dies,

  1370. Who Tells Your Story.

1371. How will they tell it?

  1372. I have another slide

1373. that I want to share.

  1374. It's my last slide.

  1375. It's something

1376. that's really stuck with me

1377. over the past couple years.

  1378. It was written

  1379. by David Brooks.

  1380. He's a recently converted

  1381. New York Times writer.

  1382. He wrote this book,

  1383. The Second Mountain.

  1384. I highly recommend it.

  1385. The Second Mountain,

1386. The Quest for a Moral Life.

  1387. And he basically says

  1388. that there are

  1389. First Mountain people

  1390. and there are

  1391. Second Mountain people.

1392. Or another way he puts it

  1393. is that there are

  1394. resume virtue people

  1395. and eulogy virtue people.

  1396. Resume virtue people

  1397. focus on individual achievement,

  1398. career, wealth,

  1399. and personal happiness.

  1400. They're motivated

  1401. by external validation

  1402. and societal expectations.

  1403. Their values are success,

  1404. status,

  1405. and personal pleasure.

  1406. And their approach

  1407. to the world

  1408. is self-centered

1409. and focused on individual goals

  1410. and achievements.

  1411. But eulogy virtue people,

  1412. they focus on meaning,

  1413. purpose,

  1414. commitment,

  1415. and contributing

  1416. to something larger

  1417. than themselves.

  1418. They're motivated

  1419. by a desire

  1420. for deeper fulfillment

  1421. and connection.

  1422. Their values are community,

  1423. service, love,

  1424. and moral joy.

  1425. And their approach

  1426. is others-centered

  1427. and focused on

  1428. building relationships

1429. and making a positive impact.

1430. Now you can easily guess

  1431. the kind of person

  1432. David Brooks suggests

  1433. we become.

1434. But the more important question

  1435. is will we?

  1436. And how?

  1437. Will we and how?

1438. So God's word to us

  1439. this morning

  1440. is to consider Timothy,

  1441. is to consider Paphroditus,

  1442. consider ancient Israel,

  1443. consider all the people

  1444. you most abhor

  1445. and all the people

  1446. you most admire,

  1447. and then above all

  1448. consider the life,

  1449. death,

  1450. and resurrection of Jesus

  1451. and ask yourselves,

  1452. what kind of person

1453. do I want to be?

1454. And what kind of life

1455. do I want to live?

1456. What is my ultimate salvation?

  1457. Is it knowing Christ?

1458. Is it knowing the God

  1459. of the universe

1460. who went to the cross for me

  1461. and whose spirit

1462. is still at work within me

1463. to will and to act

1464. according to his perfect purposes?

1465. God invites us this morning

  1466. simply to work out

1467. what he has worked for

1468. and what he has committed

  1469. to working in us.

  1470. Salvation,

  1471. union with God Almighty.

  1472. And that's good news.

  1473. It's a challenge

  1474. but it's an invitation

1475. that he extends to us

  1476. in love and gentleness

  1477. and confidence

1478. that he will bring it

  1479. to completion.

  1480. Let's pray.

  1481. Oh God,

  1482. fill us

  1483. with that fear

  1484. and trembling

  1485. in your presence

1486. and at the same time

1487. fill us with that joy,

  1488. comfort,

  1489. and security.

1490. and let us work out

  1491. our salvations.

  1492. Let us work out

  1493. our union with Christ.

  1494. Let us enjoy that.

  1495. Live dynamically in that

  1496. as your people

1497. so that we might be

  1498. bright and shining

  1499. children of God.

  1500. Bearing witness,

  1501. shining like stars

  1502. in this dark

  1503. and crooked generation,

  1504. oh God.

  1505. Beacons of hope.

  1506. An alternative way

  1507. to live

  1508. for this world,

  1509. this self-centered,

  1510. broken world,

  1511. oh God.

1512. In our union with Christ,

1513. help us to live out

  1514. selflessness

  1515. and sacrifice

  1516. and servanthood

  1517. and humility

  1518. and bring glory

  1519. to yourself,

  1520. Lord God,

  1521. as your people

  1522. seek to follow

  1523. their Savior,

  1524. Jesus Christ.

1525. In his name we pray.

  1526. Amen.
