  4. Good morning, I'm Hannah Sue and I'm a member of the North Berkeley Community Group.

  5. This morning's reading is a reading from the Acts of Apostles, chapter 18, verses 1-11,

  6. and a reading from 1 Corinthians, chapter 1, 18-25, and chapter 2, 1-5.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  7. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

  8. After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

  9. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla,

  10. because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome.

  11. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.

  12. Every Sabbath, he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

  13. When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching,

  14. testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.

  15. But when they opposed Paul and became abusive,

  16. he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them,

  17. Your blood be on your own heads.

  18. I am innocent of it.

  19. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.

  20. Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Tidious Justice, a worshiper of God.

  21. Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord,

  22. and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

  23. One night, the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision,

  24. Do not be afraid.

  25. Keep on speaking.

  26. Do not be silent.

  27. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you,

  28. because I have many people in this city.

  29. So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.

  30. A reading from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians.

  31. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,

  32. but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

  33. For it is written,

  34. I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.

  35. The intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.

  36. Where is the wise person?

  37. Where is the teacher of the law?

  38. Where is the philosopher of this age?

  39. Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

  40. For since in the wisdom of God,

  41. the world through its wisdom did not know him,

  42. God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached,

  43. to save those who believe.

  44. Jews demand signs, and Greeks look for wisdom,

  45. but we preach Christ crucified,

  46. a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles,

  47. but to those whom God has called,

  48. both Jews and Greeks,

  49. Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

  50. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,

  51. and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

  52. And so it was with me, brothers and sisters.

  53. When I came to you,

  54. I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom

  55. as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.

  56. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you

  57. except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  58. I came to you in weakness,

  59. with great fear and trembling.

  60. My message and my preaching

  61. were not with wise and persuasive words,

  62. but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,

  63. so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom,

  64. but on God's power.

  65. This is the word of the Lord.

  66. Good morning.

  67. We are continuing today in a sermon series

  68. that we started back in May.

  69. And we're looking at the life and the letters

  70. of the Apostle Paul.

  71. Particularly, we've been in the Acts of the Apostles,

  72. chapters 16 through 19,

  73. looking at the way that the greatest Christian theologian,

  74. the Apostle Paul,

  75. was driven by this urgency

  76. to get the gospel out there,

  77. to inject the gospel into the heart

  78. of every city center in the Roman Empire

  79. between Jerusalem and Rome and beyond.

  80. And he wants to be sure

  81. that within his lifetime,

  82. within his generation,

  83. he establishes as many Jew plus Gentile churches

  84. as he possibly can

  85. in all the major metropolitan areas.

  86. And as we've been looking at these different texts,

  87. a pattern has begun to emerge,

  88. at least for me,

  89. and I'd like to show you the pattern,

  90. is that Paul takes the gospel

  91. to these Greek cities

  92. that are not very unlike the Bay Area.

  93. He takes the gospel,

  94. this word of the cross,

  95. this message of Christ crucified,

  96. and every time,

  97. he gets a mixed reception.

  98. Reception.

  99. There's a small minority of people

  100. who are persuaded,

  101. they believe,

  102. they're baptized,

  103. they become vital members of the church,

  104. and then there's really

  105. a vast majority of people

  106. who are opposed.

  107. They don't believe.

  108. They revile Paul.

  109. They even, as we saw in this text,

  110. they abuse Paul.

  111. And you might remember back to Philippi,

  112. when Paul went to Philippi,

  113. he was,

  114. we're told he was seized,

  115. he was dragged before the authorities,

  116. he was accused of,

  117. quote unquote,

  118. throwing the city into an uproar,

  119. he was stripped,

  120. he was beaten,

  121. he was put in prison,

  122. and then he was exiled from the city.

  123. And then Paul just kept going.

  124. He goes on to the city of Thessalonica

  125. that we saw last week,

  126. and we saw how a mob formed,

  127. and they started a riot,

  128. and Paul was forced out of the city,

  129. other Christians were dragged

  130. before the officials,

  131. and they had to pay a fine,

  132. and they said,

  133. hey, these people are turning

  134. the world upside down.

  135. They're defying the decrees of Caesar,

  136. they're claiming that there's another king

  137. whose name is Jesus.

  138. And we have a map,

  139. just to kind of remind you

  140. of where all this stuff is in the world,

  141. and what's happening where,

  142. but Paul goes from Philippi

  143. to Thessalonica,

  144. and then he goes to Athens,

  145. the cultural capital of Greece.

  146. And when he arrives there,

  147. most people sneer at Paul.

  148. They say he's a babbler of strange ideas.

  149. And Paul decides,

  150. okay, well, now I'm going to go to Corinth,

  151. the commercial capital of Greece.

  152. And when he arrives there,

  153. he meets all the same opportunities

  154. and challenges.

  155. All the basic stuff that's been happening

  156. keeps happening.

  157. It's been said that history

  158. may not repeat itself,

  159. but it often rhymes.

  160. And you can see that

  161. in Paul's ministry.

  162. What's the result of his gospel mission

  163. in the city of Corinth?

  164. It's this,

  165. that a vast majority

  166. of Jews and Greeks

  167. hear this message of Christ crucified,

  168. and they reject it

  169. as either a stumbling block

  170. or foolishness,

  171. as something that's just deeply,

  172. offensively stupid

  173. in their eyes.

  174. But, for some people,

  175. the word of the cross

  176. is the power of God

  177. and the wisdom of God,

  178. and so they believe it

  179. and they're baptized into it.

  180. And you would think

  181. when Paul sees

  182. the conversion of Crispus,

  183. the leader of the synagogue,

  184. his entire household,

  185. he'd be massively encouraged

  186. by that breakthrough

  187. and by these conversions.

  188. And I think that he was,

  189. but if you ask

  190. any Christian leader

  191. who's been doing this

  192. for any amount of time,

  193. they'll tell you that

  194. you have to learn

  195. how to live in the paradox

  196. between encouragement

  197. and discouragement,

  198. between hope and fear,

  199. between, you know,

  200. a confidence in the Lord

  201. and a real sense of insecurity

  202. about yourself

  203. and your circumstances.

  204. And that's why the Apostle Paul,

  205. when he's afraid,

  206. he has this vision in Corinth

  207. and the Lord Jesus

  208. comes to him at night

  209. and he speaks to him

  210. in this vision

  211. to address the fears

  212. and the discouragement

  213. that Paul has

  214. and to give him

  215. some reassurance.

  216. So we're going to look at that.

  217. We're going to look at that vision

  218. and then we're also going to look

  219. at Paul's opening words

  220. and the letter

  221. that he then writes

  222. to this church

  223. that he's planted

  224. in the city of Corinth.

  225. So, three headings.

  226. First of all,

  227. what keeps us going

  228. in our mission for the city?

  229. Second question,

  230. what is the heart

  231. of our message?

  232. And third question,

  233. how can we live

  234. with real power

  235. and wisdom?

  236. What keeps us going

  237. in our mission for the city?

  238. What's the heart

  239. of our message?

  240. And how can we live

  241. with real power

  242. and wisdom?

  243. First of all,

  244. what keeps us going

  245. in our mission for the city?

  246. This is now my 20th year

  247. as a missionary

  248. to Berkeley,

  249. a church planter

  250. and a pastor

  251. in the Bay Area,

  252. which is still

  253. what it was

  254. when I came here.

  255. It's still

  256. the least religious,

  257. most unchurched

  258. metropolitan area

  259. in the entire United States.

  260. And it feels a lot

  261. like Acts chapter 16

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  262. to 19,

  263. which is why

  264. we're preaching this.

  265. There are very similar dynamics,

  266. similar patterns

  267. of the rejection

  268. of the gospel,

  269. the acceptance

  270. of the gospel,

  271. and similar feelings

  272. of encouragement

  273. about that

  274. and discouragement

  275. about that.

  276. And the Apostle Paul,

  277. it seems,

  278. is sufficiently

  279. discouraged.

  280. He's sufficiently

  281. afraid

  282. such that he needs

  283. this visitation

  284. in the night.

  285. And here's what it says

  286. in Acts chapter 18,

    Acts 18:9

  287. verse 9.

  288. One night,

  289. the Lord spoke

  290. to Paul in a vision,

  291. do not be afraid,

  292. keep on speaking,

  293. do not be silent,

  294. for I am with you,

  295. and no one is going

  296. to attack you

  297. and harm you

  298. because I have many people

  299. in this city.

  300. So Paul stayed

  301. in Corinth

  302. for a year and a half

  303. teaching them

  304. the word of God.

  305. Paul had experienced

  306. so many setbacks

  307. at this point,

  308. so much opposition,

  309. so many beatings,

  310. so many riots,

  311. so much rejection,

  312. that he needed

  313. a word from the Lord

  314. to calm his fears

  315. and to encourage

  316. his heart

  317. and to steal

  318. his nerves

  319. and to keep him going

  320. in his mission

  321. for the city.

  322. And in some way,

  323. I hope that Paul's fear

  324. and Paul's discouragement

  325. is a comfort to us

  326. because we've met

  327. this guy

  328. who's the most

  329. courageous,

  330. least fearful,

  331. most resilient,

  332. unflappable person

  333. who's probably

  334. ever existed.

  335. What does he do?

  336. Right?

  337. Remember in Philippi

  338. when he's shamefully

  339. stripped

  340. and he's unjustly beaten

  341. and then he's wrongfully

  342. in prison

  343. and he's horribly

  344. mistreated

  345. in that prison.

  346. What does Paul do?

  347. He prays

  348. and he sings

  349. at night

  350. to the Lord

  351. in the darkness

  352. at midnight.

  353. His motto,

  354. remember he's sitting

  355. in a jail

  356. writing that letter

  357. to the Philippians

  358. that we studied

  359. and his motto

  360. is in Philippians 1.21,

  361. he says,

  362. for me to live

  363. is Christ

  364. and to die

  365. is gain.

  366. He seems to be

  367. completely fearless.

  368. Philippians 4,

  369. he said,

  370. don't be anxious

  371. about anything

  372. but present your request

  373. to God.

  374. He says,

  375. I've learned the secret

  376. of being content

  377. in any and every situation

  378. and yet,

  379. he says here

  380. in this text

  381. in 1 Corinthians 2.3,

  382. he says,

  383. I came to you

  384. in weakness

  385. and with great fear

  386. and trembling.

  387. And he's in such a state

  388. that he needs a vision

  389. and he needs a word

  390. from the Lord

  391. that says,

  392. do not be afraid.

  393. One of my favorite

  394. of Paul's letters

  395. is 2 Corinthians

  396. because it's written

  397. out of a place

  398. of deep pain

  399. and deep darkness.

  400. And Paul says

  401. in 2 Corinthians 1,

  402. he says,

  403. we are under

  404. great pressure

  405. far beyond

  406. our ability

  407. to endure

  408. so that we

  409. despaired of life

  410. itself.

  411. Now,

  412. if you came to me

  413. and you said,

  414. Jonathan,

  415. I don't think

  416. I can go on.

  417. I'm in such,

  418. I'm experiencing

  419. such excruciating

  420. discouragement

  421. and I'm despairing

  422. of life.

  423. I'm heading

  424. into a deep

  425. depression

  426. and maybe

  427. toward a breakdown,

  428. I would say

  429. and think to myself,

  430. you need special

  431. help.

  432. And that's exactly

  433. what the Apostle

  434. Paul needs.

  435. He needs special

  436. help.

  437. He often needs

  438. special help.

  439. Again,

  440. in 2 Corinthians 4,

  441. he says,

  442. we're hard-pressed

  443. on every side,

  444. we're perplexed,

  445. we're persecuted,

  446. we're struck down.

  447. He says in 2 Corinthians 7,

  448. he says,

  449. there were fightings

  450. without and fears

  451. within constantly

  452. in my ministry.

  453. And so how does he

  454. keep going in the

  455. Lord's mission

  456. for the city

  457. when it's so physically

  458. and emotionally taxing

  459. and so spiritually

  460. discouraging?

  461. And how do we

  462. keep going?

  463. How do I keep going?

  464. Well,

  465. yeah,

  466. how do we

  467. do this ministry

  468. in Berkeley

  469. in the Bay Area

  470. when it can feel

  471. sometimes appropriately

  472. overwhelming?

  473. when you think

  474. about the mission

  475. we actually have

  476. to share the gospel?

  477. Well,

  478. I think this vision

  479. in Corinth

  480. is kind of a

  481. clue and a help

  482. because the risen

  483. Lord Jesus,

  484. he comes to Paul

  485. who keeps experiencing

  486. serious opposition

  487. and hostile receptions

  488. in city after city

  489. and what does he say

  490. to Paul

  491. in the darkness

  492. of night?

  493. What does he say?

  494. He says,

  495. do not be afraid.

  496. How many of us

  497. are beginning

  498. our days

  499. and ending our days

  500. in 2025

  501. listening to that

  502. voice of fear

  503. with all of his

  504. dark lies

  505. and dark temptations?

  506. It says,

  507. be afraid.

  508. Jesus,

  509. risen from the dead,

  510. comes to his apostle

  511. and he commands him,

  512. stop being afraid.

  513. afraid.

  514. Fear no longer.

  515. Take your fears

  516. and look at them

  517. and say,

  518. no.

  519. He says,

  520. do not be afraid.

  521. Keep on speaking.

  522. Do not be silent

  523. for I am with you

  524. and no one is going

  525. to attack and harm you

  526. because I have many people

  527. in this city.

  528. See,

  529. the apostle Paul

  530. needs to know

  531. three things

  532. all of which I think

  533. apply to us

  534. here at Christ Church.

  535. He says,

  536. first of all,

  537. I'm with you.

  538. I'm with you.

  539. You're not as alone

  540. as you feel

  541. because I'm with you.

  542. You're not as weak

  543. and defenseless

  544. as you feel

  545. because I'm here

  546. to protect you.

  547. You see,

  548. what drives our mission

  549. for the city,

  550. it's not us.

  551. It's not our gifts.

  552. It's not our skills,

  553. our passions,

  554. our experiences,

  555. our vision,

  556. our resources,

  557. our sense of confidence

  558. in ourselves.

  559. what drives our mission

  560. for the city

  561. is Jesus Christ

  562. risen from the dead

  563. who's living and active

  564. who says,

  565. I'm right here

  566. with you

  567. and he's promised

  568. to not just be with us

  569. but to build his church.

  570. He's promised to

  571. protect us

  572. in such a way

  573. that the gates of hell

  574. will not prevail

  575. against his church.

  576. our gospel mission

  577. to our city

  578. is completely reliant,

  579. it's totally dependent

  580. on the presence

  581. and the power

  582. of the resurrected Lord Jesus

  583. and if he is not with us

  584. then whatever we purpose

  585. this year

  586. will come to naught.

  587. It'll be nothing.

  588. But if he is with us

  589. then we can keep going

  590. with confidence.

  591. So first of all,

  592. I'm with you,

  593. he says.

  594. Secondly,

  595. I have many people

  596. in this city

  597. not only am I with you

  598. but I have many people

  599. in this city.

  600. Jesus is saying to Paul,

  601. I own this city.

  602. I sovereignly rule

  603. and reign over this city.

  604. I'm at work here

  605. in the lives

  606. of all the people

  607. in this city.

  608. They owe their very existence

  609. to me.

  610. And he says to Paul

  611. and to the church

  612. through Paul,

  613. he's saying,

  614. I've sent you

  615. to gather a people

  616. who will willingly

  617. and self-consciously

  618. belong to me.

  619. a people

  620. who will live

  621. for my name

  622. and for my glory.

  623. And because I have

  624. so many people

  625. in this city

  626. and because I'm

  627. at work in this city,

  628. my church therefore

  629. has a great work

  630. that remains to be done.

  631. A great task

  632. that remains unfinished.

  633. A great commission

  634. that remains to be

  635. worked out.

  636. And friends,

  637. this encourages me

  638. that Jesus has many people

  639. here in the city

  640. of Berkeley.

  641. He has many people

  642. in the city of Oakland.

  643. He has many people

  644. in the city,

  645. all the cities

  646. of the East Bay.

  647. A people out there

  648. whom he wants to reach.

  649. A people whom he wants

  650. to save

  651. by the power

  652. of his grace.

  653. A people that he wants

  654. to add to his church.

  655. A people that he wants

  656. to gather

  657. for his glory.

  658. A people that he wants

  659. to conform

  660. into his love

  661. and to his image.

  662. And this is why

  663. he wants us

  664. to keep going.

  665. To keep initiating

  666. relationships with people.

  667. To keep finding

  668. people of peace.

  669. To keep saying

  670. to our co-workers

  671. in our office

  672. and the people

  673. that are living

  674. on our streets

  675. and in our schools.

  676. The people with whom

  677. we've developed

  678. a friendship

  679. around common interests.

  680. Right?

  681. The members

  682. of our families.

  683. He wants us

  684. to bring them

  685. around our table

  686. and listen to them.

  687. And to love them.

  688. And to ask them

  689. great questions

  690. to say,

  691. you know,

  692. what is it

  693. that gives your life

  694. meaning?

  695. Where do you turn

  696. for help

  697. and for strength

  698. when life inevitably

  699. gets hard?

  700. Do you ever have

  701. a sense that God

  702. is real?

  703. You see,

  704. if the Lord

  705. has people

  706. in the city,

  707. then one of our

  708. primary tasks

  709. is to go and find them.

  710. And to befriend them.

  711. To listen to them

  712. and to love them

  713. into the kingdom.

  714. Jesus says,

  715. I'm with you.

  716. And I have many people

  717. in the city.

  718. And then he says,

  719. keep on speaking.

  720. Do not be silent.

  721. That's the way

  722. my great commission

  723. will be worked out

  724. is if you

  725. keep on speaking

  726. this simple message

  727. of Christ crucified

  728. so that as many people

  729. can hear the gospel

  730. as possible.

  731. This is why

  732. we're looking forward

  733. to running our

  734. Alpha course

  735. again in January.

  736. It's why we're hoping

  737. that you all

  738. will be praying

  739. for the people

  740. that God has put

  741. in your life

  742. that they would

  743. begin to explore faith

  744. and we can create

  745. spaces for people

  746. to do that very thing.

  747. Our risen Lord

  748. Jesus says,

  749. I'm with you.

  750. I have many people

  751. in the city

  752. and keep speaking.

  753. And the Lord,

  754. I think,

  755. made good on that

  756. promise to Paul.

  757. Paul,

  758. unlike all the other

  759. cities before,

  760. he's not forced

  761. out of the city.

  762. He's enabled to

  763. stay in Corinth

  764. for about 18 months.

  765. His heart

  766. is now encouraged.

  767. His faith

  768. is strengthened.

  769. His nerves

  770. are steeled.

  771. He has a newfound

  772. assurance

  773. and confidence

  774. to stay the course

  775. until his work

  776. is completed

  777. in spite of

  778. inevitable opposition.

  779. And my hope

  780. is that all of us

  781. would be able

  782. to operate

  783. out of that same

  784. encouragement,

  785. that same strength,

  786. that same confidence

  787. as we enter

  788. into a new

  789. school year,

  790. a new ministry

  791. year together.

  792. So,

  793. what keeps us

  794. going in our

  795. mission for the city?

  796. It's not us,

  797. it's Jesus.

  798. Secondly,

  799. what is the heart

  800. of our message?

  801. What is the heart

  802. of our message

  803. for our city?

  804. Well,

  805. Corinth was a lot

  806. like the Bay Area.

  807. The Apostle Paul

  808. came here to Corinth

  809. because it's the best

  810. place to make contact

  811. with all sorts

  812. of people.

  813. It was this crossroads

  814. between the eastern

  815. and the western

  816. Mediterranean

  817. and between northern

  818. and southern Greece

  819. and so Paul could

  820. meet here

  821. people of varying

  822. social statuses

  823. and spiritual orientations

  824. and that's exactly

  825. what he did

  826. for the next 18 months.

  827. He would talk

  828. to people

  829. while he was working

  830. in his leather shop,

  831. while he was selling

  832. tents in the marketplace,

  833. before work,

  834. after work,

  835. Paul's talking to people

  836. up and down

  837. the social ladder

  838. and across the spectrum

  839. of all the ideologies

  840. out there on offer

  841. primarily represented

  842. by the ideologies

  843. of Jew and Greek.

  844. And Paul says

  845. in 1 Corinthians 1, 22,

  846. he says this,

  847. he says,

  848. Jews demand signs

  849. or signs of power

  850. and Greeks look

  851. for wisdom.

  852. And of course,

  853. the Bible for Jews

  854. is the Moses

  855. and the prophets,

  856. you know,

  857. from Elijah to Ezekiel

  858. and in interpreting

  859. that Bible,

  860. people were then

  861. valuing signs

  862. of supernatural power

  863. and all the wonderful

  864. works of God

  865. that you see

  866. in the plagues

  867. in Egypt

  868. and the parting

  869. of the Red Sea,

  870. they were focused

  871. on the power.

  872. And of course,

  873. for Greeks,

  874. the sacred text

  875. for the Greeks

  876. was Homer

  877. and Plato

  878. and Aristotle

  879. and they valued

  880. not so much power

  881. but wisdom.

  882. They valued the logos

  883. and ethos

  884. and pathos

  885. of rhetoric

  886. and masterful,

  887. skillful dialogue.

  888. And in some ways,

  889. these cultures

  890. of Jew and Greek

  891. represent our

  892. modern desires today.

  893. We desire power.

  894. We desire the power

  895. of an active life,

  896. the power

  897. to get stuff done,

  898. the power

  899. to change the world.

  900. We desire wisdom.

  901. We desire the wisdom

  902. of a contemplative life,

  903. the wisdom

  904. of reflecting

  905. on what we've done,

  906. the wisdom

  907. of explaining

  908. and understanding

  909. the world.

  910. But Paul,

  911. he comes to these two

  912. alternate visions

  913. of reality

  914. and he outflanks

  915. them both.

  916. To quote

  917. some popular

  918. Berkeley bumper stickers,

  919. Paul questions authority.

  920. Right?

  921. He subverts

  922. the popular,

  923. the dominant paradigms.

  924. And he shows up

  925. with a totally

  926. different message.

  927. He comes to the city

  928. and he says

  929. he comes in verse 18

  930. with the message

  931. of the cross,

  932. of the word

  933. of the cross.

  934. In verse 23,

  935. he says,

  936. we preach Christ

  937. crucified.

  938. He says in 1 Corinthians 2.2,

  939. I resolved to know

  940. nothing while I was

  941. with you

  942. except Jesus Christ

  943. and him crucified.

  944. He says

  945. to these visions

  946. of reality

  947. that are on offer

  948. and are most popular

  949. to all the people,

  950. he says,

  951. these visions

  952. of reality

  953. are insufficient.

  954. your vision

  955. of God

  956. and of the world

  957. is incomplete.

  958. And let me see

  959. if I can illustrate

  960. this with Superman.

  961. Have you guys seen

  962. the movie yet?

  963. Okay,

  964. you need to repent

  965. and go

  966. and see this movie.

  967. I think it's probably

  968. the best

  969. of all the Superman.

  970. Of course,

  971. it's an immigrant story.

  972. It's a story

  973. of an alien

  974. who comes

  975. to the United States.

  976. He's committed

  977. to truth,

  978. justice,

  979. in the American way.

  980. These bedrock principles

  981. that you defend

  982. the defenseless

  983. and you help

  984. people in need,

  985. right?

  986. And these

  987. essential aspects

  988. and attributes

  989. of Superman

  990. are what define

  991. how he deals

  992. with evil.

  993. How he deals

  994. with corrupt politicians

  995. and unscrupulous

  996. businessmen.

  997. And in this particular,

  998. this isn't,

  999. these aren't spoilers

  1000. by the way,

  1001. but in this particular

  1002. version of the movie,

  1003. Superman is battling

  1004. tech billionaires

  1005. who hang out

  1006. in shadowy lairs

  1007. beyond,

  1008. you know,

  1009. real authorities

  1010. who are trying

  1011. to control

  1012. the universe.

  1013. And Superman's

  1014. taking on mass

  1015. bad guys

  1016. with guns

  1017. who are dragging

  1018. random people

  1019. away to be

  1020. imprisoned in cages

  1021. where nobody

  1022. can find them.

  1023. And the central

1024. bad guy in the movie,

  1025. you know him,

  1026. Lex Luthor,

  1027. he believes himself

  1028. to be a genius

  1029. and yet he's jealous

  1030. of anyone

  1031. that makes him

  1032. feel weak.

  1033. Okay, so

  1034. does any of this

  1035. sound vaguely familiar

  1036. or remotely relevant

  1037. to our time?

  1038. And Superman's there

  1039. to protect the little

  1040. guys and pummel

  1041. the bad guys,

  1042. right?

  1043. Well, there's this

  1044. great book by

  1045. Glenn Weldon

  1046. called Superman,

  1047. the Unauthorized

  1048. Biography,

  1049. and here's his thesis.

  1050. He says,

  1051. there are two

  1052. central definitive

  1053. attributes to

  1054. any good Superman

  1055. story to tell you

  1056. that it's legit,

  1057. that it's real.

  1058. He says,

  1059. the real Superman

  1060. is always selfless

  1061. and he always

  1062. operates by resolve.

  1063. Right?

  1064. He's known by his

  1065. selflessness and his

  1066. resolve.

  1067. Superman must always

  1068. put the needs of

  1069. other people before

  1070. himself and refuse

  1071. to give up.

  1072. And he says,

  1073. if either of those

  1074. factors is missing

  1075. from the story,

  1076. then our minds just

  1077. rebel against it.

  1078. We reject it.

  1079. We say,

  1080. this is simply not

  1081. the real Superman.

  1082. Right?

  1083. The real Superman

  1084. places himself between

  1085. vulnerable citizens

  1086. and mortal danger

  1087. and he's resolutely

  1088. saving lives.

  1089. He even,

  1090. this is a spoiler,

  1091. he saves the life

  1092. of a single squirrel.

  1093. Okay?

  1094. And you might be

  1095. wondering at this point,

  1096. what are you talking

  1097. about?

  1098. What does this have

  1099. to do with Jesus?

1100. Well, I want to pull

  1101. up a slide that

  1102. captures everything

  1103. Paul's trying to say.

  1104. And at the heart

  1105. of the apostles' message

  1106. to every major city

  1107. throughout the Roman

  1108. Empire, he says to

  1109. Jews who value power

  1110. and to Greeks who

  1111. value wisdom, he says,

1112. if your vision of God,

  1113. if your narrative of

  1114. God does not include

  1115. two central definitive

  1116. truths, then it's

  1117. simply not God.

1118. And what are those two

  1119. central definitive truths?

  1120. Number one, there must

  1121. be a divinely appointed

  1122. Messiah and number two,

  1123. he must be crucified.

  1124. He says,

  1125. if the story that

  1126. you're telling yourself

  1127. about reality,

  1128. if the story you're

  1129. telling yourself about

  1130. God does not include

  1131. a heaven-sent

  1132. messianic king,

  1133. then it's not God.

  1134. And if that story

  1135. that you're telling

  1136. yourself about God

  1137. doesn't have at its

  1138. center a Messiah

  1139. who's laying out

  1140. his life in

  1141. sacrificial self-giving

  1142. love as the

  1143. substitute for sinners

  1144. in need of this

  1145. most shocking

  1146. intervention in

  1147. order to be saved,

  1148. then it's simply

  1149. not God.

  1150. Paul says in

  1151. verse 22,

  1152. Jews demand signs

  1153. of power,

  1154. Greeks look for

  1155. wisdom, but we

  1156. preach Christ

  1157. crucified, a

  1158. stumbling block to

  1159. Jews and foolishness

  1160. to Gentiles.

  1161. You see, Jews heard

  1162. this message of the

  1163. cross through their

  1164. cultural value of

  1165. power, and in the

1166. cross they do not see

  1167. power, and so it's a

  1168. stumbling block.

  1169. The word Paul uses

  1170. there, it's a

  1171. scandal on, it's a

  1172. scandal.

  1173. The Greeks heard

  1174. this message of the

  1175. cross through their

  1176. cultural value of

  1177. wisdom, and in the

  1178. cross they could not

  1179. see wisdom, and so

  1180. they called it

  1181. foolishness, they

  1182. called it morion,

  1183. where we get our

  1184. word moron.

  1185. This message did not

  1186. meet their

  1187. preconceived criteria

  1188. and conditions for

  1189. what was culturally

  1190. acceptable.

  1191. Why?

1192. Why was the cross of

  1193. Christ, and why does

  1194. the cross of Christ

  1195. continue to remain so

  1196. weak and so foolish

1197. in the eyes of so

  1198. many people?

1199. Why is it seen as

  1200. madness?

1201. Why is it seen as

  1202. nonsense and absurd?

1203. Why is it seen as the

  1204. craziest message that

  1205. anyone could imagine?

  1206. Well, because it is.

  1207. Sometimes we've been

  1208. so domesticated to the

  1209. cross that we've

  1210. forgotten how awful it

  1211. truly is.

1212. Death on a cross in

  1213. Roman society was

  1214. regarded as brutal,

  1215. disgusting, and

  1216. abhorrent.

  1217. It was reserved for

  1218. hardened criminals,

  1219. incorrigible slaves, and

  1220. convicted terrorists.

  1221. To shamefully die on

1222. a rubbish heap at the

  1223. wrong end of the

  1224. empire, that's just, it's

  1225. humiliating.

  1226. Right?

  1227. It's a disastrous

  1228. defeat of unspeakable

  1229. shame and stigma.

1230. It means that, if that

1231. happens to you, it means

  1232. that you've been reduced,

  1233. you've been erased as a

  1234. nothing and as a

  1235. nobody.

1236. So look at Jesus in that

  1237. place.

  1238. He's spread-eagled,

  1239. he's skewered on his

1240. cross, he's robbed of all

  1241. freedom of movement,

  1242. strung up with nails,

  1243. pinned there, absolutely

  1244. powerless, totally

  1245. defeated.

1246. You see, the Greeks who

  1247. imagined a divine savior

  1248. figure robed in wisdom,

1249. and for Jews who expected a

1250. Messiah anointed in power and

  1251. crowned with majesty,

  1252. Paul says, look, if

  1253. your sacred story about

  1254. what's really real,

1255. right, the truest truths of

  1256. the universe, if your

1257. sacred story does not at

1258. the center have God's king

  1259. bearing all the

  1260. inhumanity and the

1261. brutality of the world and

  1262. of your heart as

  1263. symbolized in this cross,

1264. then it's simply not God.

1265. You see, this is a front,

1266. it was an outrage, it was

1267. madness, and it still is,

  1268. frankly.

1269. Many people want to change

  1270. the message.

1271. They want to minimize and

1272. remove the weakness and the

1273. foolishness of the cross and

  1274. insert something at the

  1275. center that is more

  1276. relevant, more attractive,

  1277. more triumphant, more

  1278. pragmatic.

1279. But Paul says in verse 24,

1280. to those whom God has

  1281. called, both Jews and

1282. Greeks, the cross of Christ

1283. is the power of God,

1284. God and the wisdom of

  1285. God.

1286. What he's saying is there

1287. is that only if God

1288. calls you can he enable

1289. you to see that the

  1290. reality is actually the

  1291. opposite of the

  1292. appearance.

1293. That what appears to be

  1294. the defeat of goodness

1295. by evil at the cross is

  1296. exactly the opposite.

1297. It seems as if Jesus is

  1298. overcome, but he's

  1299. actually overcoming.

  1300. overcoming.

1301. It seems as if Jesus is

1302. being crushed by all the

  1303. powers and the

  1304. principalities, but he's

  1305. actually crushing the head

  1306. of evil itself.

1307. You see, the victim is the

1308. victor, and the cross is the

1309. throne from which Jesus is

  1310. still ruling the world.

  1311. world.

1312. And only God can enable you

1313. to look at the weakness of

1314. the cross and to see God's

  1315. power there that's forgiving

  1316. sin and overthrowing death.

1317. Only God can enable you to

1318. look at the foolishness of

1319. the cross and see there

  1320. God's wisdom that's brought

1321. both his justice and his

  1322. mercy together, his wisdom

1323. that has launched from that

1324. very place of foolishness and

  1325. weakness, a kingdom of

  1326. righteousness and life.

1327. You see, when Paul spoke

1328. about this man who was

1329. crucified by the Romans and

1330. all the powers behind the

1331. Romans, and yet that God

1332. had raised up from the dead

1333. and who is now the Lord of

1334. the world and who is

  1335. summoning all people

  1336. everywhere to faithful

1337. obedience to him, he knew

1338. what people were going to

1339. think when he talked about

  1340. that.

1341. But he also knew that every

1342. time he talked about it,

1343. every time he told that

  1344. story, it would be

  1345. reveal God's power beside

  1346. which human power looks

  1347. like weakness, and it

  1348. would reveal God's wisdom

  1349. beside which all human

  1350. wisdom looks like foolishness.

1351. And this has to remain the

  1352. heart of the church's

  1353. message.

  1354. We cannot change the

  1355. message.

1356. Okay, so what keeps us

1357. going in our mission for

  1358. the city?

  1359. It's not us, it's Jesus.

1360. What is the heart of our

  1361. message?

  1362. It's not about worldly

  1363. power or worldly wisdom,

  1364. it's about God's power and

  1365. God's wisdom in Christ

  1366. crucified.

1367. And I'll end with this, how

1368. can we live with real power

  1369. and real wisdom?

1370. Don't you want to live with

  1371. power and wisdom?

1372. Who's not seeking that that

  1373. you know?

1374. Who's not going after power

  1375. and wisdom?

1376. But what is real power?

1377. What does it mean to live

1378. with real power and real

  1379. wisdom?

  1380. The philosopher Alistair

  1381. McIntyre died this past

1382. May and he had this famous

1383. line, it's so good, he says

1384. this, he says, I can only

1385. answer the question, what am I

1386. to do if I can answer the

1387. prior question of what story

1388. do I find myself apart?

1389. I can only answer the

1390. question of what am I to do if

1391. I can answer the prior question

1392. of what story do I find myself

  1393. apart?

1394. He says, you will not know

1395. who you are, you will not

1396. know what you're to do, you

1397. will not know your identity

1398. and your purpose in this

1399. world apart from a story

  1400. that's bigger than yourself.

1401. So the question is, what is

  1402. that story?

1403. And for most people, they say,

1404. well, I'm part of the story

1405. of my family, I'm part of the

1406. story of my tribe, my race,

1407. my class, my gender, I'm part

1408. of the story of my nation and

1409. that is the thing that's

  1410. driving my life.

1411. And in a lot of ways that

  1412. can be good, right?

1413. But if you are waking up in

1414. the morning these days and

1415. you set your thoughts and

1416. your mind on our nation,

  1417. right?

1418. And the first thing you

1419. think about is how the

  1420. President of the United

  1421. States is disappointing

  1422. you.

1423. Or if the first thing you

1424. think about in the morning

1425. is how your family of

  1426. origin, someone, your

  1427. sibling, your parents,

  1428. you're thinking about the

  1429. things that you've not

  1430. forgiven from your past.

  1431. Or you're thinking about

  1432. your boss, your colleagues

  1433. that you disagree with.

  1434. You're thinking about your

1435. tribe and all of its

  1436. grievances, all of its

  1437. resentments.

1438. I'm here to tell you that is

1439. a recipe not just to be

  1440. unhappy.

  1441. You will be unhappy.

1442. But it's a recipe also to be

  1443. unhelpful.

1444. You won't be helpful to other

  1445. people if that's how you're

  1446. starting your day.

  1447. Because what Alistair

1448. McIntyre says is your story

1449. will direct your thoughts and

1450. your thoughts will direct what

1451. you do and what you do

  1452. becomes your life.

1453. And so what I want to

1454. challenge us with today is

1455. what if we were to wake up

1456. every morning this week and

  1457. think about the cross?

1458. What if our first thing in

1459. our minds that we sort of

  1460. coded our neural pathways

1461. with was meditating on God's

  1462. sacrificial self-giving love

  1463. for me, for you?

1464. And what if we saw the cross

1465. and we saw this great

1466. demonstration of the love of

1467. God for us and we said,

1468. oh, now I remember the story

  1469. of which I'm a part.

1470. Now I know who I am and what

  1471. I'm to do.

1472. Now I know my identity and my

  1473. purpose.

1474. Paul says, look, if you do the

  1475. most counterintuitive thing and

1476. you seek power in the weakest

1477. place and you seek wisdom in the

1478. most foolish place, then you're

1479. going to find in that most

  1480. unlikely place the ultimate

  1481. expression and fulfillment of

  1482. power and wisdom.

1483. And then you will know how to

1484. live not according to the

1485. power of this world and the

  1486. wisdom of this world.

1487. You'll know how to embody the

1488. power and the wisdom in the

1489. way in which Jesus has

  1490. redefined them.

1491. And I'll close with this.

1492. If God came in person, if he

1493. came in the person of Jesus not

1494. to get power over other

1495. people to be served by them,

1496. but rather to show us the

1497. power of becoming small and

1498. getting low and serving people

1499. that are quote unquote beneath

  1500. us.

1501. And if that's the story that I'm

  1502. a part of, then I know what I'm

  1503. supposed to do today.

1504. If Jesus' story is the way of

  1505. downward mobility, of humbling

  1506. himself in vulnerability and

1507. weakness for the sake of

  1508. forgiving others and reconciling

  1509. others and that's, and I'm part

1510. of that larger story, then I

1511. know what I'm supposed to do

  1512. today.

1513. If in the cross of Christ God

1514. became a nothing and he became

1515. a nobody to give himself away in

1516. sacrificial love that seemed like

1517. a foolish waste of time and an

1518. unwise use of his life.

1519. And if I'm part of that larger

1520. story of who God is, then I know

1521. what I'm supposed to do today.

1522. If Jesus used his smarts, he's the

1523. smartest person who ever lived.

1524. If he used his smarts and his

1525. learning and his knowledge not to

1526. impress other people or to get

1527. approval or to get ahead, but

1528. rather use them to draw people to

  1529. God.

1530. If he exercises wisdom for the

1531. well-being and the flourishing and

1532. peace, not of just the people that

1533. he liked, but even for his enemies,

1534. and I'm a part of that larger story,

1535. then I know what I'm supposed to do

  1536. today.

1537. We've got to ask ourselves in our

1538. work, in our dating, in our money,

1539. with our spouse and our kids and our

1540. community groups and all of our free

1541. time, does this choice look like Jesus

  1542. on the cross?

1543. And if it does not, it's not God's

  1544. power and it's not God's wisdom.

1545. See, God is calling us to operate in

  1546. an alternative reality.

1547. He's calling us to operate in this

1548. counter-cultural way of living that

1549. makes no sense to the world around us.

  1550. It looks like weakness.

  1551. It looks like foolishness.

1552. But in the eyes of God, it's real

  1553. power.

1554. In the eyes of God, it's real

  1555. wisdom.

1556. And so I want you to think about

  1557. that.

1558. I want you to just fix your eyes.

1559. If you could just close your eyes

1560. and meditate for a moment on the

  1561. cross of Christ.

1562. And let's just think about this as we

1563. come to this table with his body

1564. broken and his blood poured out.

1565. And let's just prepare ourselves to

1566. receive from Christ all the power and

1567. all the wisdom that he has to give us.

1568. In the name of the Father, Son, and

  1569. Holy Spirit.

  1570. Amen.

  1571. Amen.
