  4. Good morning, Christchurch. My name is Suzy Shin, and I'll be reading today's scripture from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 19, and Paul's letter to the Ephesians, chapter 1, as printed in your liturgy.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  5. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

  6. While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.

  7. Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.

  8. But some of them became obstinate. They refused to believe and publicly maligned the way.

  9. So Paul left them.

  10. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

  11. This went on for two years so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

  12. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.

  13. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done.

  14. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.

  15. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to 50,000 drachmas.

  16. In this way, the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

  17. After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia.

  18. After I have been there, he said, I must visit Rome also.

  19. He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer.

  20. About that time, there arose a great disturbance about the way.

  21. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there.

  22. He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said,

  23. You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.

  24. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus,

  25. and in practically the whole province of Asia.

  26. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.

  27. But there is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name,

  28. but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited,

  29. and the goddess herself, who is worshipped throughout the province of Asia and the world,

  30. will be robbed of her divine majesty.

  31. When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting,

  32. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.

  33. Soon the whole city was in an uproar.

  34. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia,

  35. and all of them rushed into the theater together.

  36. Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.

  37. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul,

  38. sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.

  39. The assembly was in confusion.

  40. Some were shouting one thing, some another.

  41. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.

  42. The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front,

  43. and they shouted instructions to him.

  44. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.

  45. But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours,

  46. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians.

  47. The city clerk quieted the crowd and said,

  48. Fellow Ephesians, doesn't all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis

  49. and of her image, which fell from heaven?

  50. Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.

  51. A reading from Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

  52. For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people,

  53. I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

  54. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,

  55. may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better.

  56. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you,

  57. the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

  58. and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

  59. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead

  60. and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

  61. far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,

  62. and every name that is invoked,

  63. not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

  64. And God placed all things under his feet

  65. and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body,

  66. the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

  67. This is the word of the Lord.

  68. Thank you, Susie, for that reading.

  69. Let's go to the Lord in prayer as we open up this word.

  70. Holy Spirit, we ask that you would come.

  71. That you would convince us that apart from your son, we can do nothing.

  72. Would you show us our powerlessness

  73. and at the same time show us your great power

  74. that we've seen in the resurrection of Christ.

  75. Help us to have a holy hunger for that power

  76. and for your glory.

  77. And would we see that here as a church community

  78. as we seek to be a people who go in the name of Jesus

  79. to love and serve this world.

  80. So would you do that, Lord?

  81. Would you do that for us by your grace?

  82. In Christ's name we pray.

  83. Amen.

  84. All right.

  85. Well, next week, just to let you know,

  86. we're going to be at retreat, so don't come to church.

  87. All right.

  88. Just wanted to get that out there.

  89. We'll say it a couple times today, just so you know.

  90. But this also marks kind of the end of our series in Paul.

  91. Today we're looking at this last episode in Paul's ministry.

  92. We're looking at the origin story of the church in Ephesus.

  93. And I'm just going to just dive right in,

  94. tell you a little bit about this city, Ephesus.

  95. All right.

  96. I've got a map of Ephesus right up here.

  97. It's a prominent city in Asia Minor,

  98. Turkey as we call it today.

  99. And in Paul's day, it was the most populous city

  100. and the most prosperous and populated providence in the Roman Empire.

  101. It wasn't like some small potatoes little town.

  102. It was a cosmopolitan center.

  103. And not just politically, economically, and culturally,

  104. but also religiously.

  105. Ephesus was basically the epicenter of worship

  106. for the Greek and Roman gods.

  107. It was like the Mecca of the Greek and Roman world.

  108. It was particularly known for its worship

  109. of this Greek goddess named Artemis.

  110. And in fact, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus

  111. was considered one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.

  112. Right up there with the great pyramid,

  113. it was a temple like four times the size of the Parthenon.

  114. And so people all over the world,

  115. they came to Ephesus to worship Artemis,

  116. this goddess of fertility and childbirth

  117. and nature and wilderness.

  118. Which if you think about it,

  119. are all things that throughout history,

  120. humanity has struggled to get under our control.

  121. So tons of people are coming,

  122. trying to get that under control

  123. by coming to worship Artemis.

  124. So again, this is not only a politically,

  125. economically, and culturally prominent city,

  126. but it's a religiously significant one in Paul's world.

  127. And it's even more accurate to say

  128. that this was a spiritually dynamic city.

  129. Ephesus was like a crossroads of every kind of religion.

  130. Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Jewish,

  131. now Christian with Paul coming in there,

  132. and even like local pagan cults.

  133. Archaeologists have found tons of like inscriptions

  134. and talismans and various other ceremonial artifacts

  135. that indicate all sorts of worship

  136. and practice of magic and sorcery in Ephesus.

  137. That's your little history lesson on Ephesus.

  138. Why am I starting the sermon

  139. with all these facts about Ephesus?

  140. Well, our text today, as Susie experienced,

  141. is quite long.

  142. We're not gonna be able to turn over every stone,

  143. but if I could identify one main theme

  144. from our passage today,

  145. I'd say that these texts that were read

  146. are about power.

  147. I wanna talk about power today,

  148. what we're looking at today

  149. in the Ephesian episode in the book of Acts,

  150. and what Paul prays to God for

  151. as he later writes the church in Ephesus

  152. is a power encounter.

  153. All right, a power encounter.

  154. Now, for those of you who are immediately skeptical

  155. of this kind of a language, I hear you.

  156. Maybe speaking about a power encounter

  157. reminds you of those health and wealth,

  158. prosperity preachers on TV,

  159. and you rightly fear the abuses

  160. and excesses of charismatic Christianity.

  161. I get it, I hear you.

  162. Don't worry, we're not going there.

  163. I'm right there with you.

  164. And as we walk through this text,

  165. I think you'll see a distinction

  166. between the power encounter here

  167. and what happens, unfortunately,

  168. in so many churches,

  169. especially in America today.

  170. Now, maybe there are others of you, though, here,

  171. and this idea of a power encounter,

  172. it just raises red flags, though.

  173. It makes you kind of roll your eyes

  174. because you're just not quite convinced

  175. of the invisible spiritual realm.

  176. You prefer to live and operate

  177. within what the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor

  178. calls the imminent frame,

  179. this disenchanted, simply natural, rational world

  180. without reference to the transcendent.

  181. And if that is you this morning, I get it.

  182. And we want to be a church for you.

  183. And I totally understand why

  184. what you heard red this morning

  185. could sound like, you know,

  186. a bunch of just backwards,

  187. ancient, superstitious people

  188. arguing with each other

  189. about whose superstition was better.

  190. And maybe it's probably hard for you

  191. to appreciate how any of what was read today

  192. has relevance for you in the, you know,

  193. the 21st century.

  194. But listen, if this describes you,

  195. well, there are tons of conversations

  196. that we'd love to have with you

  197. in this church about that.

  198. We could talk about, you know,

  199. how the Western secular skepticism

  200. actually came as a byproduct

  201. of Christianity's successes

  202. and its success at dismantling, you know,

  203. ancient, pagan, medieval superstitions.

  204. We could talk about how actually impossible it is

  205. to sustain a solid sense of meaning

  206. and purpose and morality

  207. just within the imminent frame

  208. and without any reference to the transcendent.

  209. But just for the sake of time,

  210. could I just ask all of us

  211. to have an open mind this morning

  212. to the spiritual?

  213. Because the truth is,

  214. if you're skeptical about spiritual powers

  215. outside the imminent frame,

  216. outside of nature,

  217. you're actually in the minority.

  218. And not just throughout human history,

  219. but even today,

  220. the spiritual realm is not so far-fetched

  221. to most people living in the world.

  222. In the United States

  223. and even in more secular countries

  224. like France and Germany and Japan,

  225. the Pew Research surveys show

  226. that the majority of people

  227. believe that there is something spiritual

  228. beyond the natural world,

  229. even if we cannot see it.

  230. And I think this is because

  231. none of us can fully escape

  232. what Jesus and the Scriptures teach,

  233. that we're all imprinted

  234. with the image of God,

  235. which means deep down,

  236. we all know that reality

  237. is far more expansive

  238. than what meets the eye.

  239. And try as we might

  240. to answer life's biggest questions.

  241. Why do things happen

  242. the way they do?

  243. Why does it matter

  244. that I'm alive?

  245. What goals should we pursue

  246. with our lives?

  247. We all know

  248. the answers to these questions

  249. cannot be found

  250. simply within the imminent frame

  251. where all that matters

  252. is matter.

  253. And I'm not saying this

  254. to belittle anyone here

  255. or to bully you

  256. and just try to guilt you

  257. for your skepticism,

  258. but really more than trying

  259. to win an argument

  260. or convert you to my team.

  261. What our heart is here

  262. at Christ Church

  263. is for everyone here,

  264. Christian or not,

  265. religious or not,

  266. what we pray for as a staff,

  267. what your elders pray for,

  268. what we pray for downstairs

  269. at 9.30 every Sunday

  270. in the boiler room,

  271. every Sunday,

  272. over everyone who comes in

  273. through these doors,

  274. is that every single person

  275. who comes into this place

  276. to worship with us

  277. would have a power encounter

  278. with the living God.

  279. It's like that's what

  280. this thing is here.

  281. This is not a lectern.

  282. This is a pulpit.

  283. I'm not here trying to share

  284. information with you today

  285. about Christianity,

  286. trying to make it sound

  287. more plausible.

  288. I'm trying to communicate to you

  289. the fullness

  290. of what your maker

  291. and sustainer

  292. desires for you.

  293. And listen,

  294. it's so much more

  295. than His love.

  296. We love talking about

  297. His love here.

  298. It's wonderful.

  299. We focus tons on that,

  300. that there is a Father

  301. who loves you,

  302. who has sent His Son

  303. to bring you into His family

  304. and give you His inheritance,

  305. that this is a God

  306. who is personally interested

  307. and invested

  308. in you and your life.

  309. We love the good news

  310. of God's love here.

  311. But guess what?

  312. There's even more good news.

  313. There's even more good news.

  314. Good news that this Father

  315. is also a king.

  316. And if He is your Father

  317. and King,

  318. if you are a royal child

  319. of God,

  320. then that means

  321. you don't just have

  322. the love of the Father.

  323. You have the authority

  324. and power

  325. of your Father

  326. and King

  327. in heaven.

  328. The good news

  329. I have for us

  330. this morning

  331. is that God

  332. doesn't just want you

  333. to know Him personally,

  334. He wants you to know Him

  335. powerfully.

  336. And you know,

  337. to make this more personal,

  338. just to give you a window

  339. into my own heart

  340. and my vision

  341. and prayer

  342. for my family

  343. and for myself

  344. and for our church

  345. in the season ahead.

  346. You know,

  347. I've just completed

  348. seven years

  349. of ministry here

  350. at Christ Church.

  351. I get my sabbatical

  352. right after Easter.

  353. Looking forward to that.

  354. But I'll miss you,

  355. of course.

  356. But 2026 Easter

  357. is also when

  358. Christ Church East Bay

  359. turns 20 years old.

  360. 20 years old,

  361. 20 years of leading people

  362. into deeper relationships

  363. with Christ

  364. and His church

  365. through community

  366. and for the city.

  367. But you know,

  368. Jonathan and I

  369. and our elders

  370. as we've been praying

  371. and discerning together,

  372. thinking to ourselves,

  373. God,

  374. not thinking to ourselves,

  375. praying to God,

  376. God,

  377. what would you have for us

  378. in the next decade.

  379. What I keep coming back to

  380. when we think about

  381. our mission statement

  382. that we exist

  383. to lead people

  384. into deeper relationships

  385. with Christ,

  386. I think what God

  387. keeps bringing back to me

  388. is the words

  389. deeper still.

  390. Deeper still.

  391. And so,

  392. you know,

  393. what I've been praying for

  394. toward that end,

  395. what I've been praying for

  396. is God's power.

  397. Not just His wisdom,

  398. not just more strategic

  399. church practices,

  400. not even just that we'd be

  401. a church full of love,

  402. care,

  403. and compassion,

  404. I've been praying

  405. that we'd be a church

  406. full of the power

  407. and presence of God

  408. like we haven't yet seen

  409. in this church.

  410. A power and presence

  411. that permeates

  412. our church family

  413. and radiates

  414. into the Bay Area cities

  415. around us

  416. and our communities

  417. just like what we see here

  418. in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  419. And now,

  420. maybe you've never

  421. thought of Christianity

  422. in these terms.

  423. Maybe for you,

  424. Christianity is about

  425. comfort and peace

  426. and identity.

  427. Maybe it's about

  428. salvation and eternal life

  429. or answers to life's

  430. big philosophical

  431. existential questions.

  432. But this morning,

  433. I want to invite you

  434. to consider the power

  435. that's offered to you

  436. in Jesus Christ.

  437. And I think this is

  438. particularly relevant

  439. in our present

  440. cultural moment,

  441. especially here in the Bay

  442. where in many ways

  443. we're feeling more powerful

  444. than we've ever been,

  445. right?

  446. We carry these little

  447. supercomputers

  448. in our pockets

  449. that connect us instantly

  450. to the whole world,

  451. right?

  452. And put oceans of knowledge

  453. at our fingertips.

  454. AI promises us

  455. unprecedented efficiency

  456. and productivity.

  457. Biotech is pushing

  458. the boundaries

  459. of human life itself.

  460. And yet,

  461. at the same time,

  462. many of us probably

  463. also feel more powerless

  464. than ever,

  465. right?

  466. At the very same time.

  467. More connection

  468. means more exposure

  469. to the world's pain.

  470. More knowledge

  471. means more responsibility

  472. and higher expectations

  473. we can never meet.

  474. More efficiency

  475. just means the bar

  476. keeps rising

  477. and with every new solution,

  478. new unforeseen challenges

  479. and problems emerge.

  480. So sure,

  481. technology can extend life,

  482. but it cannot tell us

  483. what life is for.

  484. It can give us information,

  485. but it cannot give us wisdom.

  486. It can connect us,

  487. but it cannot heal us,

  488. which is why we need

  489. a different kind of power.

  490. Not just the power

  491. to hit deadlines

  492. and meet quotas,

  493. but the power to live

  494. as we were created to live.

  495. The power to resist evil,

  496. the power to persevere

  497. in suffering,

  498. to be healed

  499. and renewed,

  500. the power to see

  501. the broken made whole.

  502. We need a higher power.

  503. And see,

  504. that's the kind of power

  505. Acts 19 puts on display

  506. for us.

  507. That's the kind of power

  508. that Paul prays

  509. for the church in Ephesus

  510. to encounter the power

  511. of Christ's resurrection

  512. at work,

  513. in us,

  514. in the world.

  515. All right,

  516. so sorry for that long windup,

  517. but let's take a look

  518. at this origin story now

  519. of the church of Ephesus.

  520. So remember,

  521. this is a city

  522. full of political,

  523. economic,

  524. cultural,

  525. and religious power,

  526. and its people

  527. are extremely spiritual,

  528. which basically means

  529. they were seeking

  530. even more power.

  531. Like sure,

  532. they were living

  533. in this upscale,

  534. cosmopolitan city

  535. as Ephesian citizens.

  536. Even the silversmiths

  537. and the craftsmen

  538. and the clergy

  539. were getting paid,

  540. but they were a society

  541. still always seeking more.

  542. Like what secret spell,

  543. what incantation,

  544. what practice

  545. can I add to my life

  546. to level up,

  547. to be healthier,

  548. to be more prosperous,

  549. to be more successful,

  550. this was the climate

  551. that Paul was stepping into

  552. in Ephesus.

  553. Now,

  554. verses two through seven,

  555. they aren't printed

  556. in your liturgy

  557. for the sake of time,

  558. but basically what happens

  559. is Paul enters Ephesus

  560. and he meets some people

  561. who heard and accepted

  562. the preaching

  563. of John the Baptist

  564. many years before,

  565. but they hadn't yet

  566. heard about Jesus,

  567. which means that

  568. they were living lives

  569. of repentance,

  570. they were living lives

  571. of turning away from sin,

  572. but they didn't exactly know

  573. who or what to turn to.

  574. So Paul tells them

  575. and they get baptized

  576. in the name of the Lord Jesus

  577. and boom,

  578. power encounter.

  579. They are baptized

  580. in the Holy Spirit.

  581. They're empowered

  582. to speak in tongues

  583. and to prophesy,

  584. indicating that they are now

  585. children of God

  586. who speak with

  587. and commune

  588. with the living God

  589. and who also hear from Him

  590. and share that word

  591. with others.

  592. So basically,

  593. the Holy Spirit's power

  594. falls upon people

  595. immediately

  596. as Paul enters

  597. this incredibly

  598. spiritually dynamic place

  599. and this is just

  600. the beginning.

  601. As was Paul's practice,

  602. he also goes

  603. into the synagogues first.

  604. He goes into the synagogues

  605. where he always went

  606. to find the spiritually

  607. interested

  608. and verse 8 says

  609. he spoke boldly there,

  610. persuasively making a case

  611. about the kingdom of God.

  612. Basically,

  613. showing the Jewish people

  614. of Ephesus

  615. how Jesus was the fulfillment

  616. of their scriptures

  617. and announcing to them

  618. that His kingdom had come

  619. and that it was a kingdom

  620. better than

  621. and radically other than

  622. any other kingdom.

  623. But apparently,

  624. the reception was mixed there.

  625. Some were persuaded

  626. and others refused to believe

  627. and verse 9 says

  628. some publicly malign the way

  629. which is what they called

  630. Christianity back then,

  631. Jesus' way.

  632. And so Paul leaves them

  633. and he starts lecturing

  634. and holding daily discussions

  635. in a public space

  636. called the Hall of Tyrannus

  637. which by the way

  638. should encourage us

  639. to see Christianity

  640. as not a private religion only

  641. but as a viable public faith

  642. to be shared

  643. and to be in dialogue

  644. with the public.

  645. That's what I love

  646. about being here in Berkeley

  647. just two blocks from Cal.

  648. That's what I love

  649. about our Cal Scholar Series.

  650. You PhD students,

  651. so many of you PhD students

  652. coming here

  653. and integrating

  654. your academic disciplines

  655. with your commitment to Christ.

  656. I love that.

  657. That's what we need to be about

  658. at Christ Church.

  659. And the hope and prayer

  660. is that God will bless

  661. and use our church

  662. as He did in Ephesus.

  663. Verse 10 says,

  664. Paul lectured

  665. and held daily discussions

  666. for two years

  667. and then everyone

  668. in all the province of Asia

  669. heard the word of the Lord.

  670. That is how powerfully

  671. God was working

  672. through Paul's ministry

  673. in Ephesus.

  674. Can you imagine that?

  675. The whole province of Asia

  676. had heard the word of the Lord.

  677. Can you imagine

  678. because of the teaching here

  679. that all of California

  680. hears about who Jesus is?

  681. I want to pull up the map again

  682. and basically when it's saying

  683. that the word of the Lord

  684. went through all the province of Asia,

  685. like, you know all those churches

  686. that you read about in Revelation?

  687. That's what happened.

  688. Those were church plants

  689. that resulted

  690. from this powerful work of God

  691. in Ephesus.

  692. Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis,

  693. Smyrna, Philadelphia, Laodicea.

  694. This is a result

  695. of what God is doing

  696. through Paul's ministry

  697. and teaching

  698. through the Holy Spirit

  699. in Ephesus, all right?

  700. And then verse 11 says,

  701. God doesn't just do miracles

  702. through Paul

  703. but extraordinary miracles

  704. as if normal miracles

  705. weren't extraordinary enough.

  706. More power encounter.

  707. And we didn't print

  708. all that happened here

  709. in the liturgy

  710. but basically

  711. from verses 11 to 16,

  712. God is working powerfully

  713. through Paul

  714. and people recognize it.

  715. People are even

  716. taking handkerchiefs

  717. that had touched Paul

  718. and they're bringing them

  719. to their sick friends

  720. and people are getting cured.

  721. Evil spirits are fleeing.

  722. And you know,

  723. with this being

  724. a very spiritually dynamic city,

  725. there are also these

  726. Jewish exorcists

  727. that Acts 19 talks about

  728. who notice the power

  729. that's at work in Paul.

  730. So what do they try to do?

  731. They try to copy

  732. Paul's technique.

  733. They invoke the name of Jesus

  734. trying to command evil spirits

  735. to flee from people.

  736. But when they try this,

  737. an evil spirit goes,

  738. I know Jesus

  739. and I know about Paul

  740. but who are you?

  741. And the man with the evil spirit

  742. beats them bloody

  743. and runs them out of the house

  744. naked.

  745. And you know,

  746. you might think

  747. that this would weaken

  748. the people's faith

  749. in the power

  750. of the name of Jesus.

  751. You know,

  752. maybe that was one spirit

  753. that, well,

  754. the name of Jesus

  755. didn't work on that one.

  756. But verse 17 says

  757. the opposite actually.

  758. When this became known

  759. to the Jews and Greeks

  760. living in Ephesus,

  761. they were all seized

  762. with fear

  763. and the name of the Lord Jesus

  764. was held in high honor.

  765. Apparently,

  766. everyone heard about

  767. what happened

  768. with these Jewish exorcists

  769. trying to use Jesus' name

  770. for their own purposes.

  771. And then rather than

  772. people thinking,

  773. oh well,

  774. that didn't work,

  775. or well,

  776. I guess some evil spirits

  777. are immune to Jesus'

  778. the Jesus incantation.

  779. No,

  780. people probably

  781. because of Paul's teaching

  782. and life

  783. were recognizing that,

  784. hey,

  785. this Christianity stuff,

  786. the way

  787. is not like

  788. any other religion.

  789. It's not just about

  790. performing a ritual

  791. or using some

  792. religious technique

  793. to wield

  794. and manipulate

  795. divine power

  796. for our own purposes.

  797. Christianity

  798. isn't just some

  799. life hack.

  800. No,

  801. that evil spirit

  802. recognized Paul,

  803. recognized Jesus,

  804. and recognized

  805. their authority,

  806. but not these

  807. Jewish exorcists

  808. because these Jewish

  809. exorcists had no

  810. meaningful relationship

  811. to Jesus.

  812. He wasn't their Lord.

  813. They weren't united

  814. with Jesus

  815. and his Father in Heaven.

  816. They had no authority,

  817. no power.

  818. Jesus' name

  819. was not going to be

  820. manipulated,

  821. objectified,

  822. or used.

  823. And in fact,

  824. Jesus is seen

  825. as so powerful

  826. that he's actually

  827. seen as sovereign

  828. over that evil spirit

  829. that went to teach

  830. those Jewish exorcists

  831. a lesson.

  832. So ironically,

  833. their failure

  834. to cast out a demon

  835. in the name of Jesus

  836. ends up leading

  837. to Jesus' name

  838. being held

  839. in even higher honor

  840. in Ephesus.

  841. They are all seized

  842. with fear, it says.

  843. And not only did this

  844. impact all of Ephesus,

  845. but it led to a revival,

  846. a large public corporate

  847. act of repentance

  848. in the city.

  849. Verse 18 says,

  850. many of those

  851. who believed

  852. now came

  853. and openly confessed

  854. what they had done.

  855. This means that

  856. many who said

  857. that they were Christians,

  858. many who said

  859. that they were part

  860. of the way,

  861. were also mixed up

  862. with other faith commitments,

  863. caught up in the spiritual,

  864. syncretistic climate

  865. of Ephesus,

  866. but now they're moving

  867. toward the exclusivity

  868. of Christ.

  869. The one who said,

  870. I am the way,

  871. the truth,

  872. and the life.

  873. No one comes to the Father

  874. except through me.

  875. And this wasn't just

  876. a confession of their lips,

  877. but it was repentance

  878. in action,

  879. even at great expense.

  880. Verse 19 says,

  881. a number who had

  882. practiced sorcery

  883. brought their scrolls

  884. together and burned

  885. them publicly.

  886. When they calculated

  887. the value of the scrolls,

  888. the total came

  889. to 50,000 drachmas.

  890. You know,

  891. archaeologists

  892. have dug up this area

  893. and they've noticed

  894. tons of these

  895. types of scrolls,

  896. tons of these written words

  897. and inscriptions

  898. all over Ephesus.

  899. They call them

  900. the Ephesian letters.

  901. And piecing together

  902. all the evidence

  903. and reading the historians,

  904. what they've gathered

  905. is that these words

  906. were magical formulas

  907. that people used

  908. and they would carry

  909. and recite

  910. to protect themselves

  911. from harm.

  912. So when you read about

  913. these burning of the scrolls,

  914. that's what's happening.

  915. People are burning

  916. their scrolls

  917. with all these magic formulas.

  918. And it says

  919. 50,000 drachmas worth.

  920. For reference,

  921. 50,000 days wages

  922. for an average worker.

  923. A drachma is like

  924. a day's wage.

  925. So that's,

  926. I did the math,

  927. 135 years of salary

  928. were burned right there

  929. in repentance

  930. because of the power

  931. of the Holy Spirit

  932. working in that city.

  933. And so this was

  934. a massive public repentance

  935. and renunciation

  936. of the prevailing powers

  937. in Ephesus.

  938. And it only led

  939. to the word of the Lord

  940. spreading even more widely.

  941. Verse 20 says,

  942. in this way,

  943. the word of the Lord

  944. spread widely

  945. and grew in power.

  946. Again, Ephesus

  947. was having a power encounter

  948. and the power of Christ's word

  949. and spirit

  950. were prevailing.

  951. And so much so

  952. that it was even disturbing

  953. the Ephesian economy

  954. and threatening

  955. their political stability.

  956. Again,

  957. the Christian faith

  958. isn't just a private

  959. personal religion

  960. but a public faith.

  961. And when God's word

  962. and spirit move forth

  963. in power,

  964. it doesn't just change

  965. individual lives

  966. and hearts

  967. but it impacts

  968. whole societies.

  969. That's what the power

  970. of Christ wants to do

  971. here in Berkeley,

  972. here in the Bay Area,

  973. in our world.

  974. Read with me

  975. from verse 23.

  976. About that time

  977. there arose

  978. a great disturbance

  979. about the way.

  980. A silversmith

  981. named Demetrius

  982. who made silver shrines

  983. of Artemis

  984. brought in

  985. a lot of business

  986. for the craftsmen there.

  987. He called them together

  988. along with the workers

  989. in related trades

  990. and said,

  991. you know my friends

  992. that we received

  993. a good income

  994. from this business

  995. and you see

  996. and hear

  997. how this fellow Paul

  998. has convinced

  999. and led astray

  1000. large numbers of people

  1001. here in Ephesus

  1002. and in practically

  1003. the whole province

  1004. of Asia.

  1005. He says that

1006. gods made by human hands

1007. are no gods at all.

  1008. There is danger

1009. not only that our trade

1010. will lose its good name

1011. but also that the temple

1012. of the great goddess Artemis

  1013. will be discredited

  1014. and the goddess herself

  1015. who is worshipped

  1016. throughout the province

1017. of Asia and the world

  1018. will be robbed

  1019. of her divine majesty.

  1020. When they heard this

  1021. they were furious

  1022. and began shouting

  1023. great is Artemis

  1024. of the Ephesians.

  1025. Soon the whole city

  1026. was in an uproar.

  1027. So basically

  1028. Paul's message,

  1029. Paul's ministry

  1030. centered on Jesus

  1031. and his kingdom.

  1032. It has massively

  1033. disrupted

  1034. this entire city,

  1035. its very economy,

  1036. its political stability.

  1037. There is undeniable

  1038. power encounter

  1039. going on

  1040. in this spiritually

  1041. dynamic city.

  1042. So that's what happened

  1043. here in Acts 19

  1044. but so what?

  1045. So what

  1046. and then what?

  1047. What are the implications

  1048. for us particularly

  1049. as it relates

  1050. to power?

  1051. Well first notice

  1052. Paul's spirit led,

  1053. spirit empowered method.

  1054. It's super important

  1055. to notice

  1056. that all Paul's success

  1057. in Ephesus

  1058. is completely owed

  1059. to the direction

  1060. and the power

  1061. of the Holy Spirit

  1062. which Paul had

  1063. absolutely no control over.

  1064. Notice he doesn't

1065. try to climb the ladder

  1066. in Ephesus

  1067. to gain influence

  1068. and a hearing.

  1069. He simply goes

  1070. to the spiritually interested

1071. and those who are open

1072. to the way of Jesus

  1073. even if they're a fringe group

  1074. and he starts there

1075. just with those 12 disciples.

  1076. And he's not coercive

1077. but he seeks to win

  1078. and persuade.

  1079. He's not selling anything

  1080. but he's simply

  1081. convinced himself

  1082. that everyone

  1083. has every reason

  1084. to embrace Jesus

  1085. and his kingdom.

  1086. And this is why

1087. he also brings his message

  1088. into public places

  1089. side by side

  1090. in dialogue

  1091. with anyone

  1092. who's willing to talk.

  1093. That's why they go

1094. to the hall of Tyrannus.

  1095. He spends multiple years

  1096. there just unpacking

  1097. all the reasons

  1098. that he has

  1099. for why the kingdom

  1100. of Jesus

  1101. is so great

1102. while also at the same time

  1103. healing and casting out

  1104. evil spirits

  1105. in Jesus' name

  1106. to demonstrate

  1107. his power.

  1108. But the whole time

  1109. he's relying

  1110. not on his logic

  1111. or his persuasiveness

  1112. but ultimately

  1113. on the Holy Spirit

  1114. to change people's hearts

  1115. and even to change

  1116. whole regions

  1117. and societies.

  1118. Paul's method

  1119. is not a technique

  1120. so much as

  1121. a relational

  1122. spirit-led

  1123. spirit-driven faithfulness

  1124. that inevitably

  1125. bears fruit

  1126. in exactly the way

  1127. that God intends.

  1128. And this is such

  1129. a huge contrast

  1130. to what the Ephesians

  1131. were probably used to.

1132. You have the Jewish exorcist

  1133. who tried to manipulate

  1134. Jesus' name

  1135. like a magic formula.

  1136. You have your

  1137. Greek philosophers

  1138. who leaned on logic

  1139. and syllogisms

1140. to try to persuade people.

1141. You have the silversmith example,

  1142. Demetrius,

  1143. he's leveraging wealth

  1144. and people's greed

  1145. and populist rhetoric

1146. to try to get people

1147. to do what he wants them to do.

  1148. But as Paul simply

  1149. follows the leading

  1150. of the Holy Spirit

  1151. in faithfulness

  1152. to his calling

  1153. as an apostle,

  1154. he effortlessly

  1155. demonstrates

  1156. that the highest power

  1157. is not magic,

  1158. logic,

  1159. money,

  1160. it's not popular opinion

  1161. or influence,

  1162. it's simply

  1163. the Spirit.

  1164. I mean,

  1165. I feel like

  1166. I return to this

  1167. again and again

  1168. because I think

  1169. it's what God

  1170. wants me to hear

  1171. again and again.

  1172. My job,

  1173. our job

  1174. as human beings,

  1175. as children of God,

  1176. it isn't to win

  1177. at life

  1178. by all the metrics

  1179. that are set

  1180. before us.

  1181. It's not to be

  1182. the most impressive

  1183. tree in the forest,

  1184. no,

  1185. it's to be

1186. the tree of Psalm 1.

  1187. And if you haven't

  1188. memorized Psalm 1 yet

  1189. and you're a member

  1190. of this church,

  1191. get on it,

  1192. alright?

1193. Psalm 1 is our psalm,

  1194. right?

  1195. God's calling us

  1196. to be a Psalm 1 tree

  1197. with ever deepening

  1198. roots in Christ,

  1199. less concerned

  1200. about branching out

  1201. than going deep

  1202. and reaching high

  1203. into the heavens.

  1204. And as the psalmist

  1205. says,

  1206. that is the kind

  1207. of tree

  1208. that will bear fruit,

  1209. that will experience

  1210. the powerful

  1211. abundance of God,

  1212. maybe not exactly

  1213. when we would

  1214. have planned it,

  1215. but always

  1216. in season,

  1217. in God's

  1218. perfect timing.

  1219. And this is tied

  1220. to the second thing

1221. I want us to notice

  1222. which is the way

  1223. that the way

  1224. of Jesus

  1225. and His Spirit

  1226. runs so counter

  1227. to the idolatrous

  1228. way of Ephesus.

  1229. The second implication

  1230. here is that

  1231. Jesus' way

  1232. is really the only

  1233. positive sum game.

  1234. Just think of

  1235. like all the people

  1236. every year

  1237. coming into Ephesus,

  1238. flocking to the

  1239. temple of Artemis

  1240. every single year

  1241. seeking to offer

  1242. their worship,

  1243. seeking to pay

  1244. their tribute,

  1245. seeking to purchase

  1246. that new scroll

  1247. with that new

  1248. magical formula,

  1249. seeking to make

  1250. a fortune selling

  1251. those scrolls,

  1252. plugging into the

  1253. religio-economic

  1254. machine that is

  1255. Ephesus.

  1256. But whether

  1257. they were there

  1258. for wealth

  1259. or health

  1260. or both,

  1261. they were all

  1262. basically engaging

  1263. in the same

  1264. practice.

  1265. Transaction-based

  1266. salvation.

  1267. Zero-sum

  1268. game religion

  1269. or even negative-sum

  1270. game religion.

  1271. If I sacrifice

  1272. this much wealth,

  1273. then I will

  1274. receive this

  1275. much health.

  1276. If I sacrifice

  1277. this much time,

  1278. then I will

  1279. gain this much

  1280. treasure.

  1281. If I just

  1282. follow this

  1283. magic formula

  1284. or just pick up

  1285. that innovative

  1286. technique,

  1287. then I can

  1288. level up.

  1289. Then I can

  1290. power up in

  1291. my lifelong

  1292. effort towards

  1293. saving myself

  1294. from pain

  1295. and discomfort

  1296. and harm

  1297. and misfortune

  1298. and even death.

  1299. And this isn't

  1300. just an ancient

  1301. practice in Ephesus

  1302. though, right?

  1303. We may not

  1304. be as overtly

  1305. and explicitly

  1306. spiritual here

  1307. in the Bay Area.

  1308. We may not

  1309. all be hunting

  1310. for magic scrolls.

  1311. I don't know

  1312. if that's your

  1313. thing.

  1314. But maybe,

  1315. and even more

  1316. sadly,

  1317. we're still

  1318. convinced of

  1319. life only in

  1320. the imminent

  1321. frame.

  1322. And so we

  1323. just look to

  1324. technology and

  1325. human ingenuity,

  1326. self-help,

  1327. hacks, tips,

  1328. and techniques to

  1329. basically do

  1330. exactly what the

  1331. Ephesians were

  1332. doing.

  1333. Trying to secure

  1334. our salvation,

  1335. trying to secure

  1336. our health,

  1337. our wealth,

  1338. and our happiness

  1339. through transaction.

  1340. But see,

  1341. Jesus offers us

  1342. a far better way.

  1343. He doesn't call us

  1344. to power up

  1345. to save ourselves,

  1346. but to plug into

  1347. Him and to enjoy

  1348. His resurrection

  1349. power.

  1350. He invites us

  1351. to die with Him

  1352. and to rise with

  1353. Him and to live

  1354. in His abundance

  1355. as a counterculture

  1356. to a world

  1357. absorbed with

  1358. scarcity.

  1359. He's the only

  1360. positive sum game.

  1361. I love what

  1362. the New Testament

  1363. scholar Dennis

  1364. Johnson writes

  1365. about the difference

  1366. between the

  1367. the ways of Christ

  1368. and the ways

  1369. of Ephesus.

  1370. He writes,

  1371. magical manipulation

  1372. is a manifestation

  1373. of the common

  1374. human quest

  1375. for salvation

  1376. by works.

  1377. Our hunger

  1378. to control

  1379. our destinies,

  1380. to break free

  1381. from our need

  1382. for and our

  1383. dependence on

  1384. divine grace,

  1385. but the message

  1386. of Jesus

  1387. is a message

  1388. of God's gift.

  1389. Unearned,

  1390. undeserved,

  1391. unmanipulated,

  1392. and uncoerced.

  1393. It is the good

  1394. news of rescue

  1395. for the penniless,

  1396. the helpless,

  1397. the hopeless,

  1398. who can neither

  1399. pay their benefactor

  1400. in advance,

  1401. nor repay

  1402. His kindness

  1403. in their gratitude.

  1404. God's gift

  1405. unmasks our

  1406. pretensions to

  1407. independence,

  1408. our delusion

  1409. that we can bargain

  1410. or barter

  1411. with the Lord

  1412. of the universe.

  1413. The Spirit

  1414. is God's gift,

  1415. not a product

  1416. to be purchased

  1417. or a service

  1418. to be contracted

  1419. or a wage

  1420. to be earned.

  1421. See,

  1422. what God

  1423. offers us

  1424. is the same

  1425. power that

  1426. raised Christ

  1427. from the dead,

  1428. the Holy Spirit,

  1429. at no cost

  1430. to us

  1431. and at every cost

  1432. to His Son.

  1433. It's the only power

  1434. worth having

1435. and we can have it

  1436. without striving

  1437. but simply

  1438. by faith,

  1439. by trusting in Him

  1440. and receiving

  1441. His gift.

  1442. And this leads us

  1443. to the final implication

  1444. which is that

  1445. God's powerful spirit

  1446. dismantles exploitation.

  1447. You see,

  1448. when Paul was preaching

  1449. and when people

  1450. were being freely healed

  1451. and set free

  1452. from evil spirits

1453. in the name of Jesus,

  1454. all for free,

  1455. Paul was declaring

  1456. that Jesus is Lord

  1457. above every false

  1458. man-made God

  1459. the Ephesians

  1460. had been paying

  1461. tribute to.

  1462. And the results

  1463. were staggering.

  1464. Whole segments

  1465. of the population

  1466. turned away

  1467. from Artemis.

  1468. You remember

  1469. the 135 years worth

  1470. of wages

  1471. that were burned

  1472. in magic scrolls.

  1473. It was a massive

  1474. repudiation

  1475. of the spiritual economy

  1476. in Ephesus.

  1477. Paul wasn't even

  1478. trying to run

  1479. an anti-Artemis campaign.

  1480. He didn't boycott

  1481. the silversmiths.

  1482. He didn't bomb

  1483. the ancient wonder

  1484. of the world temple.

  1485. He simply preached

  1486. Christ crucified

  1487. and risen

  1488. and people started

  1489. connecting the dots.

  1490. And as they did,

  1491. they walked away

  1492. from an entire system

  1493. that had been

  1494. exploiting them.

  1495. False authorities

  1496. demanding allegiance,

  1497. unjust economies,

  1498. draining their resources.

  1499. If you pay attention

  1500. to Demetrius' speech,

  1501. right,

  1502. he didn't care

  1503. about the people

  1504. whom his idols

  1505. were basically pillaging.

  1506. Demetrius was happy

  1507. to continue churning out

  1508. these ineffective products,

1509. happy with the status quo,

  1510. as long as money

  1511. kept flowing

  1512. to his pocket.

  1513. But the Spirit

  1514. dismantled all of that,

  1515. and not through force

  1516. or violence,

  1517. but through the truth

  1518. and freedom

  1519. of Christ.

  1520. Whereas Demetrius

  1521. preached the message

  1522. of greed

  1523. and fear

  1524. to preserve

  1525. his unjust,

  1526. deceitful status quo,

  1527. Paul was preaching

  1528. a God

  1529. of generous grace.

  1530. He was preaching

  1531. freedom from empty,

  1532. expensive rituals

  1533. and true power

  1534. to disrupt

  1535. the wicked status quo.

  1536. And see,

  1537. that's what's going

  1538. to change the world.

  1539. That's what's going

  1540. to change the world,

  1541. the message

  1542. and ministry

  1543. of Christ

  1544. and his Spirit

  1545. reconfiguring

  1546. what we invest in

  1547. with our time

  1548. and our money,

  1549. altering the goals

1550. that we have at work,

  1551. altering the goals

  1552. that we have

  1553. for our children,

  1554. reshaping

  1555. how we spend

  1556. our leisure

1557. or even how we use

  1558. our bodies.

  1559. And we desperately

  1560. need this transformative

  1561. power in our world

  1562. and in our lives

  1563. because make no mistake,

  1564. Artemis is still

  1565. very much with us.

  1566. She just wears

  1567. different clothes now,

  1568. right?

  1569. We may not be

  1570. bringing sacrifices

  1571. to her temple

1572. but maybe we offer tithes

1573. at the altar of consumption

  1574. where what you have

  1575. determines what you're worth

  1576. and where our closets

  1577. are full

  1578. but our souls

  1579. still feel empty.

  1580. Or maybe we kneel

1581. at the altar of success

  1582. where our resumes

  1583. and our promotions

  1584. promise salvation

  1585. yet leave us anxious

  1586. that we'll still

  1587. never measure up

  1588. or maybe it's

  1589. the temple of beauty

  1590. right?

  1591. This multi-billion dollar

  1592. industry feeding off

  1593. of our insecurities

  1594. and still

  1595. none of us ever

  1596. feels attractive enough.

  1597. It could be

  1598. the temple of politics

  1599. demanding allegiance

  1600. to false saviors

  1601. who promise us

  1602. power or protection

  1603. yet leave us

  1604. divided

  1605. and disillusioned

  1606. still.

  1607. Or maybe it's

  1608. the glowing temple

  1609. in our pockets again

  1610. where algorithms

  1611. exploit our weaknesses,

  1612. addict us to

  1613. distraction

  1614. and enslave us

  1615. to mindlessness

  1616. and pornography

  1617. and all the filth

  1618. that's out there

  1619. only making us feel

  1620. more restless,

  1621. lonely,

  1622. and dissatisfied.

  1623. We need,

  1624. the church needs,

  1625. the world needs

  1626. a higher power.

  1627. And though no one

  1628. would have expected

  1629. it to come

  1630. through a crucified

  1631. Jewish man

  1632. from Nazareth

1633. who claimed to be God,

  1634. that is precisely

  1635. where it's found.

  1636. And if you will

1637. take hold of that power,

1638. if you will take hold

  1639. of that person,

1640. if you will take hold

  1641. of him,

  1642. Jesus Christ,

1643. not to wield his power

  1644. for your own purposes

  1645. like those Jewish

  1646. copycat exorcists,

  1647. but to be used

  1648. of God

  1649. as Paul was

  1650. and as many others

  1651. who've gone before

  1652. and after him,

  1653. that same power

  1654. that Paul prayed for

  1655. in Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1656. the immeasurably

  1657. great power of God

  1658. that raised Jesus

  1659. from the dead

  1660. is the same power

1661. that will be at work

  1662. in you who believe.

  1663. A power that truly

  1664. makes you free,

  1665. free from fear,

  1666. free from greed,

  1667. free from slavery

  1668. to what cannot satisfy,

  1669. free to bear fruit

1670. like the Psalm 1 tree,

  1671. rooted deep

  1672. and flourishing

  1673. in season.

  1674. And my practical challenge

1675. to each of us this week,

  1676. something I've been doing

  1677. myself,

  1678. is not presuming

  1679. that we've already arrived,

  1680. already approached

  1681. my max efficiency

  1682. and fruitfulness.

  1683. I've been asking God,

  1684. God,

  1685. where are the places

  1686. in my life

1687. that you want to show me

  1688. your power?

  1689. Where are the places

  1690. where I feel powerless

  1691. or limited?

  1692. Show me your power

  1693. in those places.

1694. Or where are the places

1695. where I need to be confronted

  1696. with my limits

  1697. and powerlessness?

  1698. Show me your power

  1699. in those as well

  1700. in my powerlessness.

  1701. Oh God,

  1702. show me,

  1703. show us,

  1704. show the world

  1705. your greater power.

  1706. God,

  1707. we're going to be

  1708. instead

  1709. and increase

  1710. our dependence

  1711. on you

  1712. and you alone.

  1713. This is a God

  1714. who wants you

  1715. to know his love

  1716. and he wants you

  1717. to know his power.

  1718. It's a beautiful combination

  1719. and this is what

  1720. will change the world

  1721. by the Spirit

  1722. of Christ.

  1723. Let's go to him

  1724. in prayer.

  1725. Oh Lord,

  1726. we ask that you

  1727. would stir up

  1728. within this church

  1729. a holy hunger

  1730. for your power.

1731. Not for our own ends

  1732. but your perfect

  1733. holy ends.

  1734. That your kingdom

  1735. might come,

  1736. that your will

  1737. might be done

  1738. on earth

  1739. as in heaven

  1740. through us

  1741. in our neighborhoods,

  1742. in our workplaces,

  1743. in our homes.

1744. Would we be a people

  1745. who depend upon,

  1746. who experience

  1747. and who share

  1748. with others

  1749. the incredible power

  1750. of God

  1751. in Christ,

  1752. the power of salvation

  1753. for all who believe,

  1754. the power of resurrection,

  1755. the Holy Spirit

  1756. residing in us.

  1757. Lord,

  1758. show us,

1759. give us a higher view

1760. of what you're calling us to.

1761. show us the good works

  1762. that you've prepared beforehand

1763. that we should walk in

  1764. and surprise us

  1765. with how amazingly

  1766. extraordinary

  1767. those works are

1768. as we walk them out

  1769. in service

  1770. of our King Jesus.

1771. In his name we pray.

  1772. Amen.
