  4. Good morning, I'm Melissa Arosuniega and I'm part of the El Cerrito Kensington Community Group and Oikos Group and the Deacon.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Genesis, chapter 11, verses 1-9, and chapter 12, verses 1-9, as printed in your liturgy.

    Genesis 11:1–9

  6. A reading from the book of Genesis.

  7. Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

  8. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shiner and settled there.

  9. They said to each other, come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.

  10. They used brick instead of stone and tar for mortar.

  11. Then they said, come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves.

  12. Otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

  13. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.

  14. The Lord said, if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this,

  15. then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

  16. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.

  17. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth and they stopped building the city.

  18. That is why it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.

  19. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

  20. The Lord had said to Abram, go from your country, your people, and your father's household to the land I will show you.

  21. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you.

  22. I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.

  23. I will bless those who bless you and whoever curses you, I will curse.

  24. And all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

  25. So Abram went as the Lord had told him and Lot went with him.

  26. Abram was 75 years old when he set out from Haran.

  27. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated,

  28. and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan.

  29. And they arrived there.

  30. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moray at Shechem.

  31. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land.

  32. The Lord appeared to Abram and said,

  33. To your offspring I will give this land.

  34. So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.

  35. From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent,

  36. with Bethel on the west and I on the east.

  37. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

  38. Then Abram set out and continued toward Negev.

  39. The grass withers and the flowers fade.

  40. The Lord of our God stands to our Lord.

  41. Good morning Christ Church.

  42. We have these flowers here from our memorial service yesterday for Will Muller,

  43. where we celebrated his life and the precious gift that he was to us.

  44. And that also means that this is my second day in a row of preaching.

  45. So I need your help a little more than usual.

  46. So if you're here this morning, just kind of give me an eyebrow raised or something like that.

  47. More than your typical, hmm.

  48. Okay?

  49. We're exploring this first part of the first book of the Bible.

  50. And we just heard this word in Genesis 11, 8.

  51. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth and they stopped building the city.

  52. And, you know, the initial question is, is God against cities?

  53. Is God anti-urban?

  54. Is he pro-agrarian?

  55. And I won't repeat everything we said over the past few weeks,

  56. but we'll just say that God created us to live in cities.

  57. And that all this stuff you see in these first 11 verses of Genesis 11,

  58. with people moving closer together to consolidate the social order,

  59. people building city walls to protect the vulnerable and the poor from harm and injustice,

  60. people pooling their diverse talents for creative potential,

  61. people using language to cooperate and to draw out all the riches of nature and of the soul

  62. for both the sciences and the arts,

  63. people dividing up their labor to build civilization.

  64. All of that is good.

  65. All of that is part of what God intended for his good creation.

  66. And God intended cities to be a place where we would collectively reach up to heaven,

  67. where we would look for a spiritual center,

  68. where we would seek an elevated reality beyond just ourselves.

  69. All that is what our creator God intended from the very beginning.

  70. But there's something amiss, right?

  71. There's something off kilter here in this story.

  72. And so we want to ask ourselves, what's fundamentally flawed in this city?

  73. And what is God's solution for our most basic human problems?

  74. And so we want to look at three things.

  75. Surprise, surprise.

  76. We want to look at Humanities Babel Project, God's Blessing Project,

  77. and Living by the Promises of God.

  78. Humanities Babel Project, God's Blessing Project,

  79. and Living by the Promises of God.

  80. You with me?

  81. I told you I need your help today.

  82. Okay.

  83. So Humanities Babel Project, verse 4, says this,

  84. that they said,

  85. Come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens

  86. so that we may make a name for ourselves

  87. and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

  88. This tower is actually a ziggurat.

  89. It reaches up to the clouds, up to the stars.

  90. It's got a shrine at the very top,

  91. and it's got this giant staircase coming down from the top.

  92. And it's meant to be a bridge between heaven and earth.

  93. It's designed by its builders to make it easier for God,

  94. to make it more convenient for God to come down,

  95. as if this city and these people can somehow help God be God.

  96. And what we see already is there's this transactional relationship

  97. where we're here to help you, God,

  98. and you, God, are there to help us, protect us, make us prosper.

  99. This is not only a bridge to heaven, but it's also a beachhead.

  100. Right?

  101. It's a beachhead for this kind of covert assault on God.

  102. We don't want to make a city so that his name will be great.

  103. We want to make a city so that our name will be great.

  104. The strength of our unity is our language.

  105. The symbol of our unity is our tower,

  106. and we are going to unite together to make a name for ourselves,

  107. to seek an identity and a significance independently apart from God.

  108. And we've seen this already.

  109. This is a replay of Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  110. Remember we talked there about the creator-creature distinction

  111. where God is authoritative and he's independent,

  112. and we as creatures are derivative and we're dependent.

  113. And yet there in Genesis 3, Adam and Eve said,

  114. we don't want to abide by this creator-creature distinction.

  115. We want to assert our own autonomous, self-made, self-defined identity.

  116. We want to be the masters of our fate and the captains of our soul

  117. without depending on the one who gives us life and breath and everything else.

  118. And that's what's happening here, again, in the city on a grander scale.

  119. We're going to satisfy our material and spiritual aspirations independently apart from God.

  120. Our language, our ingenuity, our technology, all these good gifts from God,

  121. we're going to use these to make a name, make a significance apart from God in our collective achievements.

  122. And it's kind of confusing because the tower looks religious, you know,

  123. and they're pursuing it with a religious kind of zeal,

  124. but actually it's a symbol of their own self-centeredness,

  125. that we're going to use God, we're going to use the gifts of God to make us great.

  126. We don't really care about God himself.

  127. We don't want to glorify God.

  128. We want to glorify ourselves.

  129. This is a city that's not centered on God.

  130. It's centered on the collective self.

  131. And you can really see that in the tallest and highest buildings in any city today, right?

  132. They're monuments to our human power, monuments to our money, monuments to our success,

  133. monuments to our technology and our reason and our intellect and our science.

  134. We, after all, can split atoms and we can launch rockets into space and we can edit genes

  135. and we can create artificial intelligence and we can live by DoorDash.

  136. So who needs God?

  137. Who needs to live by his rule and his authority?

  138. We can be our own lords and our own saviors.

  139. You know, and all the Babel projects from the ancient city to modern cities say,

  140. we don't need the rule of heaven.

  141. We can live without God at the center and we'll be okay.

  142. And in verse 5 it says this,

  143. The Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building.

  144. The irony is that the builders of this tower are so proud that it reaches up to heaven,

  145. but God can hardly see it, right?

  146. And we know God is capable of perceiving what people are doing without having to reposition himself.

  147. But he intentionally parodies their heaven-storming aspirations by bending down, right?

  148. To see the thimble-like grandeur of their puny and pathetic power to preserve their own identity

  149. and control their own fortunes and glorify themselves.

  150. And verse 6 says,

  151. In other words,

  152. If they keep infringing on my divine sphere,

  153. if they keep transgressing into the place where only I deserve to be,

  154. if they keep putting themselves in my place,

  155. living as if I'm unnecessary,

  156. living as if they can achieve stability and durability independently from me,

  157. as if nothing can shake them,

  158. as if nothing can destroy them,

  159. then there will be absolutely no end to their arrogant schemes.

  160. They're not going to respect any of the God-given boundaries that I've built into my creation,

  161. and they're not just going to try to build a city,

  162. they're going to try to build an entire empire

  163. in which the Creator is excluded from His very own creation.

  164. And so, verse 7,

  165. That word Babel in Mesopotamia meant the gate of the gods.

  166. But now in Hebrew it means the city of the confused.

  167. Right?

  168. The metropolis of the mixed up.

  169. They sought to make a name for themselves apart from God,

  170. and the result is that they now have this infamous name

  171. that's the exact opposite of their desires,

  172. which is what Jesus taught.

  173. He said,

  174. Anyone who exalts themselves is going to be humbled.

  175. Well, how do we apply this to our own lives?

  176. Application number one is on a corporate and collective level,

  177. God's judgment here is not a spiteful move to keep humans divided and dumb.

  178. Rather, this half-built, unfinished, incomplete tower

  179. and its dispersed builders

  180. show us the power of God's grace

  181. who will not allow human autonomy to go unchecked.

  182. But rather, in His grace,

  183. He restrains the damage

  184. that our human autonomy will cause.

  185. And He comes to limit the extent

  186. to which human beings

  187. will harden themselves against Him.

  188. And so if God frustrated the human schemes in Babel,

  189. how do you think He might be at work

  190. in the frustrations and failures of our culture right now?

  191. The weakening of our institutions,

  192. the fraying of our social fabric,

  193. the polarization of our perspectives,

  194. the erosion of our trust,

  195. the rising tide of global populism and authoritarianism,

  196. the increase of political violence,

  197. do we think that God might somehow be at the back of it all

  198. allowing us to be disabused of our stability,

  199. to be shaken up

  200. so that we might be a people

  201. who more seriously seek after His name

  202. and glorify His name

  203. rather than seeking to glorify

  204. and make a name for ourselves?

  205. That's application number one.

  206. Application number two is that

  207. on an individual and a personal level,

  208. if you're here today

  209. and you've mapped out your future life,

  210. you've mapped out how your career's supposed to go,

  211. how your plans ought to be,

  212. and all the relationships in your life,

  213. ask yourself this question,

  214. is this plan made under God?

  215. Or is it made apart from God?

  216. Because if you plan your life without God at the center,

  217. without seeking His blessing,

  218. He will, in His grace,

  219. allow it to be frustrated.

  220. He'll allow it to come to nothing

  221. because He loves you so much.

  222. He wants to protect you from you.

  223. He knows that you cannot live without Him.

  224. This is what the Babel Project is all about.

  225. It's a foolish errand.

  226. It's absurd.

  227. So it's interesting to me that

  228. God saw fit to put Genesis 11 and Genesis 12

  229. right next to each other,

  230. juxtaposing them

  231. so that we could compare and contrast

  232. humanity's Babel Project

  233. with God's blessing project.

  234. God's blessing project in Genesis 12.

  235. You see, in the first three,

  236. two chapters of Scripture,

  237. Genesis 1 and 2,

  238. we see God's good creation

  239. but then from Genesis 3 and on

  240. to Genesis 11,

  241. that good creation's fallen into this

  242. downward spiral of sin and death and judgment.

  243. And the question at this point is,

  244. if the nations have lost their way,

  245. then how will God shine His light on us?

  246. How will He provide a way of salvation for us?

  247. Genesis 12 comes along

  248. and Genesis 12 is a new beginning.

  249. Genesis 12 says,

  250. For God so loved the world that He gave Abraham.

  251. For God so loved the world that He gave Israel.

  252. And this is God's counter-initiative

  253. to our Babel Project.

  254. And here's what it says in Genesis 12, 1.

  255. It says,

  256. The Lord had said to Abram,

  257. Go from your country,

  258. your people,

  259. and your father's household to the land.

  260. I will show you.

  261. I will make you into a great nation.

  262. And I will bless you.

  263. I will make your name great.

  264. And you will be a blessing.

  265. See, Babel's desire to make a name for themselves

  266. is in diametric contrast

  267. to God's promise to Abraham

  268. because only God can give an everlasting name.

  269. Only God is the source and the center of life.

  270. And only He gives us a name

  271. so that we will glorify His name

  272. and not ourselves and our own achievements.

  273. So who is this person that God chooses to bless?

  274. Who is Abram?

  275. Well, just to trace a line from Genesis 4 last week,

  276. we learned about Seth and Enosh

  277. and their family line

  278. which began to call upon the name of the Lord

  279. and through that family line,

  280. the knowledge of God was to be preserved among humanity

  281. all the way to Abraham's family line.

  282. This was the one ray of hope

  283. in a world that was mired in oppression and violence.

  284. But if you look at right before Genesis 12,

  285. it's very interesting that when God calls Abraham,

  286. His family is actually living in a center of lunar worship.

  287. And Abraham's father's name means moon.

  288. Right?

  289. So the one family that's supposed to be preserving

  290. the knowledge of the true God

  291. is no longer worshiping the Creator.

  292. God is worshiping the creation.

  293. And by the end of Genesis 11,

  294. the last flickering candle of humanity

  295. has just gone out.

  296. Right?

  297. Abraham is lost spiritually.

  298. His wife, Abraham,

  299. or his wife Sarah is barren physically.

  300. And the human situation

  301. is really quite hopeless.

  302. And it's at a dead end.

  303. And there's no human power

  304. that can bring a change

  305. to the violent world in which we're living.

  306. But God,

  307. but the Creator God

  308. who spoke in Genesis 1

  309. and said,

  310. let there be light,

  311. He's the same Redeemer God

  312. who speaks in Genesis 12

  313. and says,

  314. Abraham,

  315. I'm going to bless you.

  316. The Word of the Lord comes

  317. and it creates hope.

  318. It creates life.

  319. The Word of the Lord

  320. calls into existence

  321. things that are not.

  322. And what this shows us

  323. is that Abraham

  324. is utterly dependent on God

  325. for blessing.

  326. Right?

  327. The blessing of God

  328. is not something

  329. that Abraham initiates.

  330. It's not something

  331. that he goes to get.

  332. It's not something

  333. that he takes for himself.

  334. But rather,

  335. it's something that God gives

  336. by His grace.

  337. Right?

  338. Because Abraham's

  339. not even looking for it.

  340. Abraham's not qualified.

  341. He's from an idol-worshiping family.

  342. He's compromised.

  343. He's paganized.

  344. He's bowing down

  345. to all the wrong things.

  346. But God in His grace comes

  347. and He says,

  348. I'm going to bless you

  349. and I'm going to make

  350. your name great.

  351. We have a slide,

  352. I think.

  353. And what it seeks to show

  354. is that our culture

  355. operates according to this

  356. in-shaped dynamic

  357. where we perform

  358. and God rewards us.

  359. We offer gifts to God

  360. and God responds with blessing.

  361. So performance

  362. leads to reward.

  363. That's the default mode

  364. of our culture.

  365. But Genesis 12

  366. and really the whole Bible

  367. operates according to

  368. a U-shaped dynamic.

  369. We can go to the next slide

  370. where God gives us grace

  371. even though we don't deserve it.

  372. God is not waiting

  373. for Abraham to change.

  374. He's not waiting for him

  375. to come up to scratch.

  376. He just blesses him.

  377. He just gives him grace

  378. which he presumes

  379. will lead to gratitude.

  380. He just gives him blessing

  381. which he assumes

  382. will lead to response.

  383. And what exactly

  384. does God promise Abraham?

  385. Well, four things.

  386. You guys with me?

  387. Alright, four things.

  388. He promises a people.

  389. Verse 2,

  390. he says,

  391. I will make you a great nation

  392. and I will bless you.

  393. And to bless someone,

  394. to bless a person

  395. means that you give them

  396. the power of life,

  397. you give them

  398. the enrichment of life,

  399. you give them

  400. the increase of life.

  401. And of course,

  402. Abraham has no kids.

  403. He's 75 years old.

  404. His wife, Sarah,

  405. is barren.

  406. And God says to him,

  407. I'm going to give you

  408. a miracle child.

  409. I'm going to give you

  410. an offspring.

  411. I'm going to give you

  412. descendants.

  413. I'm going to give you

  414. grandchildren and

  415. great-grandchildren

  416. and extended family

  417. and tribes

  418. and a nation

  419. that's blessed

  420. with life.

  421. Well, where are all

  422. those people going to live?

  423. And that's the second thing

  424. is God promises a place.

  425. In verse 1,

  426. he says,

  427. go to the land

  428. I will show you.

  429. In verse 7,

  430. he says,

  431. to your offspring

  432. I will give this land.

  433. I'm going to give you

  434. the land of Canaan,

  435. the promised land.

  436. Your offspring,

  437. you're going to live

  438. in this land

  439. that's flowing

  440. with milk and honey.

  441. The great nation

  442. that comes from you,

  443. childless Abraham,

  444. is going to live

  445. at this crossroads

  446. between the most powerful

  447. civilizations

  448. of the ancient

  449. Near East.

  450. And how will

  451. that happen?

  452. How will this

  453. promised people

  454. live and survive

  455. in this promised place?

  456. Well, the third thing

  457. is God promises

  458. protection.

  459. In verses 2 and 3,

  460. he says,

  461. I will make your name

  462. great and you

  463. will be a blessing

  464. and whoever blesses

  465. you, I will bless.

  466. And then this next part

  467. doesn't really come

  468. through in the English,

  469. but the Hebrew says

  470. basically,

  471. whoever deals lightly

  472. with you,

  473. whoever dismisses

  474. or disparages you,

  475. whoever holds you

  476. in contempt,

  477. whoever seeks to harm

  478. you will be removed

  479. from my blessings,

  480. will have their life

  481. diminished.

  482. I will curse them.

  483. So God is saying

  484. to Abraham,

  485. I'm going to

  486. sovereignly protect you,

  487. I'm going to actively

  488. intervene for your welfare

  489. so that you can be confident,

  490. so that you can walk

  491. unafraid.

  492. And what is God's

  493. ultimate plan

  494. for his promised people

  495. and the promised place

  496. and his promised protection?

  497. The fourth thing

  498. is God promises

  499. international blessing.

  500. Verse 3,

  501. he says,

  502. all the peoples

  503. and all the families

  504. on the earth

  505. are going to be blessed

  506. through you.

  507. We have another slide.

  508. And what this shows

  509. is God's gracious blessing

  510. is meant to go

  511. to all the nations

  512. that he made

  513. and that he loves.

  514. And it's like this hourglass

  515. that funnels down

  516. through this narrow neck,

  517. this narrow passageway

  518. through his covenant partners,

  519. through this one man,

  520. through this one family,

  521. through this one nation

  522. and through one particular

  523. offspring of that nation

  524. named Jesus,

  525. God's blessing

  526. is going to go out

  527. and his life

  528. is going to go out

  529. to everyone else.

  530. Why does this matter?

  531. Because remember

  532. in Genesis 1-2,

  533. God's people,

  534. Adam and Eve,

  535. were living in God's place,

  536. Eden,

  537. and they were enjoying

  538. God's protection

  539. under his word

  540. and they were at rest

  541. with God's blessing.

  542. But they lost

  543. all four of those things.

  544. But now God says,

  545. Abraham,

  546. through you

  547. and through this

  548. royal fourfold promise

  549. to bring my kingdom

  550. from heaven to earth

  551. through you,

  552. I'm going to begin

  553. to reverse

  554. the downward spiral

  555. of sin and death

  556. and judgment.

  557. This is how

  558. I'm going to overcome

  559. the devastation

  560. and alienation

  561. wrought

  562. by human sin

  563. and pride.

  564. And how does Abraham

  565. respond to God's

  566. call and his promise

  567. and his blessing?

  568. Well, Abraham

  569. says yes.

  570. He says yes to God.

  571. And that's amazing

  572. because God does not

  573. give Abraham

  574. all the details.

  575. God doesn't even tell

  576. Abraham where

  577. he's going to take him.

  578. He just knows

  579. that God is calling me

  580. to forsake

  581. all that's familiar

  582. and all that's secure

  583. and all that's comfortable

  584. and all that's precious

  585. and to abandon

  586. all of the things

  587. I'm bowing down to,

  588. all the things

  589. that I'm seeking

  590. for blessing in life

  591. and instead

  592. to enter into

  593. a personal relationship

  594. with the living God

  595. and to exclusively

  596. embrace

  597. this one true

  598. creator God

  599. and to have no other

  600. gods before him

  601. and simply to live

  602. by faith

  603. in his promises.

  604. And pagan Abraham

  605. says yes

  606. and he repents.

  607. He converts

  608. and he demonstrates

  609. his faith in God

  610. through his obedience

  611. and he left

  612. absolutely everything

  613. to follow the Lord.

  614. and the question

  615. for you today

  616. is have you been called?

  617. Have you been called

  618. out of humanity's

  619. Babel project

  620. and into God's

  621. blessing project?

  622. Are you willing

  623. to come out

  624. of your old life

  625. apart from God

  626. in order to enter

  627. into a new life

  628. with God?

  629. And do you want

  630. what Abraham has?

  631. Do you want to share

  632. in this fourfold

  633. amazing blessing

  634. that God has given

  635. to Abraham?

  636. So we talked about

  637. humanity's

  638. Babel project

  639. and God's

  640. blessing project

  641. but I want to close

  642. talking for a moment

  643. about living by

  644. the promises of God

  645. because Abraham

  646. doesn't just say yes

  647. right?

  648. He does yes.

  649. Living by the promises

  650. of God.

  651. Other scriptures

  652. give Abraham

  653. the highest honor

  654. by calling him

  655. the friend of God.

  656. He's the friend

  657. of God.

  658. What does that mean?

  659. It means that Abraham

  660. rebuilt his entire life

  661. around the promises

  662. of God.

  663. It means that Abraham

  664. restructured and

  665. recenters his whole life

  666. on the word

  667. of God

  668. and the promises

  669. of God

  670. in personal

  671. and practical

  672. ways.

  673. And you see it

  674. right here

  675. in verse 4.

  676. So Abraham

  677. went as the Lord

  678. had told him

  679. and Lot

  680. went with him.

  681. Abraham was 75

  682. years old

  683. when he set out

  684. from Haran.

  685. He didn't consider

  686. himself retired

  687. from life

  688. with God.

  689. And he went out

  690. to do something

  691. that was not convenient

  692. that was not easy

  693. that was not comfortable

  694. and that was not safe.

  695. He was 75

  696. years old

  697. he goes out

  698. where there's

  699. no secure sources

  700. of food and water

  701. no police force

  702. no justice system

  703. and he goes

  704. as God sends him

  705. into enemy

  706. occupied territory

  707. to live as a tiny

  708. minority

  709. in the midst

  710. of a majority

  711. of unbelieving

  712. pagans

  713. who are opposed

  714. to his faith.

  715. And if Abraham

  716. had not done that

  717. if Abraham

  718. had not acted

  719. then we wouldn't

  720. be here today.

  721. We would not

  722. be experiencing

  723. the blessings

  724. of God

  725. through him.

  726. So what that means

  727. is in order

  728. to get the blessing

  729. and in order

  730. to be the blessing

  731. we've got to go.

  732. We've got to act.

  733. We've got to obey.

  734. Abraham exchanged

  735. what was known

  736. for what was unknown

  737. and he lived

  738. the rest of his life

  739. for things

  740. that he absolutely

  741. could not see.

  742. Right?

  743. He did not die

  744. with the whole

  745. promised people.

  746. He died

  747. with one child.

  748. He did not die

  749. with the whole

  750. promised land.

  751. He died

  752. with one tiny

  753. little burial plot

  754. in that land.

  755. The promises

  756. of God

  757. had barely

  758. begun

  759. to be fulfilled.

  760. But as Hebrews

  761. 11 1 says

  762. faith

  763. is the assurance

  764. of things hoped

  765. for

  766. and the conviction

  767. of things

  768. not seen.

  769. And look at how

  770. Abraham lives out

  771. his conviction

  772. of the things

  773. that are not seen.

  774. It says in verse 6

  775. Abraham traveled

  776. through the land

  777. as far as the site

  778. of the great tree

  779. of Morah

  780. at Shechem.

  781. At that time

  782. the Canaanites

  783. were in the land

  784. the Lord

  785. appeared to

  786. Abram and said

  787. to your offspring

  788. I will give

  789. this land.

  790. So he built

  791. an altar there

  792. to the Lord

  793. who had appeared

  794. to him.

  795. And from there

  796. he went on

  797. toward the hills

  798. east of Bethel

  799. and pitched his tent

  800. with Bethel

  801. on the west

  802. and I on the east

  803. and there he built

  804. an altar to the Lord

  805. and called

  806. on the name

  807. of the Lord.

  808. Why did he do that?

  809. Because he knew

  810. that in order

  811. to be a blessing

  812. to all the peoples

  813. of the earth

  814. I've got to go

  815. to the strongholds

  816. of their foreign gods

  817. and the strongholds

  818. of all their pagan idols.

  819. That's what that sacred tree

  820. at Morah is all about.

  821. That's what these mystical hills

  822. in Bethel

  823. are all about.

  824. And Abraham knows

  825. that he has to go

  826. to those places

  827. and he has to worship

  828. the Lord there.

  829. He's not building

  830. a tower

  831. up to the heavens.

  832. He's simply

  833. leaving behind him

  834. altars of costly sacrifice

  835. and praise

  836. and prayer.

  837. Symbolically

  838. claiming

  839. that this place

  840. will one day

  841. be filled

  842. with people

  843. who call

  844. on the name

  845. of the Lord.

  846. Is that not

  847. what we

  848. are doing

  849. in Berkeley

  850. in the East Bay?

  851. Verse 8

  852. in English

  853. says he called

  854. on the name

  855. of the Lord

  856. but in Hebrew

  857. it says

  858. he made proclamation

  859. of the Lord

  860. by name.

  861. And what that means

  862. is that the worship

  863. of Abraham

  864. involved witness.

  865. It involved

  866. calling on the name

  867. of the Lord

  868. in the midst of

  869. and in the hearing

  870. of people

  871. who did not believe

  872. in this one true God

  873. because Abraham

  874. felt responsible

  875. for them.

  876. He felt responsible

  877. for the peoples

  878. and the families

  879. of the earth

  880. and he said

  881. if they're going

  882. to get the blessing

  883. of the Lord

  884. through me

  885. then that means

  886. I need to share

  887. my newfound faith

  888. with them.

  889. I need to share

  890. the meaning

  891. of the Lord's name

  892. the attributes

  893. of his name

  894. the activities

  895. of his name.

  896. I need to share

  897. with them

  898. the knowledge

  899. of the Lord

  900. and the promises

  901. of the Lord.

  902. See Abraham's faith

  903. was a faith

  904. that not only

  905. obeyed the word

  906. of the Lord

  907. but also shared

  908. the word

  909. of the Lord

  910. with others.

  911. And it wasn't

  912. about making

  913. a name for himself

  914. it was about

  915. making a name

  916. for the Lord.

  917. And all of his

  918. spiritual offspring

  919. who want to be

  920. called friends

  921. of God

  922. must follow suit.

  923. You all

  924. including me

  925. are blessed

  926. to be a blessing

  927. to others.

  928. God's blessing

  929. on you

  930. is not an end

  931. in itself

  932. it's a means

  933. to the end

  934. of blessing

  935. all the nations

  936. of the earth

  937. and you've been

  938. blessed not just

  939. so you can

  940. know the Lord

  941. but so through

  942. you many people

  943. can come

  944. to know

  945. the living God.

  946. And friends

  947. we have a

  948. greater message

  949. to proclaim

  950. than the one

  951. that Abraham

  952. proclaimed.

  953. Jesus said

  954. in the gospel

  955. of John chapter

  956. 80

  957. said

  958. your father

  959. Abraham

  960. rejoiced

  961. at the thought

  962. of seeing

  963. my day

  964. he saw it

  965. and was glad.

  966. In other words

  967. Abraham knew

  968. that all the

  969. peoples of the

  970. earth

  971. would be blessed

  972. through one

  973. blessing bearing

  974. person

  975. a particular

  976. son

  977. of Abraham

  978. and I want

  979. to suggest

  980. to you

  981. as we close

  982. that

  983. Jesus

  984. is a true

  985. and better

  986. Abraham

  987. Abraham

  988. because he

  989. answered the

  990. call of God

  991. to leave

  992. all that was

  993. familiar to him

  994. all that was

  995. secure in heaven

  996. all that was

  997. comfortable

  998. all that was

  999. precious

  1000. and Jesus

  1001. left his

  1002. father's house

  1003. and he went

  1004. out into

  1005. the unknown

  1006. he went out

  1007. into a very

  1008. unsafe place

  1009. and he went

  1010. out to live

  1011. by faith

  1012. and the assurance

  1013. of things hoped

  1014. for and the

  1015. conviction of

  1016. things not seen

  1017. and Jesus

  1018. created a new

  1019. people of God

  1020. by the shedding

  1021. of his blood

  1022. and the forgiveness

  1023. of their sins

  1024. and the blessing

  1025. of abundant

  1026. and eternal

  1027. life

  1028. and Jesus

  1029. would turn

  1030. the whole

  1031. world into

  1032. a place

  1033. where heaven

  1034. and earth

  1035. can come

  1036. together

  1037. and where

  1038. all creation

  1039. can be the

  1040. promised land

  1041. that's filled

  1042. with the presence

  1043. and the power

  1044. and the kingdom

  1045. of God

  1046. and Jesus

  1047. would pour out

  1048. his Holy Spirit

  1049. so that we

  1050. could experience

  1051. the protection

  1052. of God

  1053. and the

  1054. international

  1055. blessing of God

  1056. until he comes

  1057. again to make

  1058. all things

  1059. new

  1060. and so like

  1061. Abraham

  1062. we are invited

  1063. to have

  1064. a faith

  1065. in things

  1066. that are already

  1067. secured for us

  1068. things that are

  1069. already promised

  1070. for us

  1071. by God's

  1072. eternally beloved

  1073. son

  1074. Jesus

  1075. and that's why

  1076. the resurrected

  1077. Jesus

  1078. he blessed

  1079. his disciples

  1080. and he said

  1081. go make

  1082. disciples of all

  1083. the nations

  1084. go be a blessing

  1085. to all the peoples

  1086. of the earth

  1087. and know

  1088. that I'm

  1089. going to be

  1090. with you

  1091. every step

  1092. of the way

  1093. as you

  1094. complete that

  1095. task

  1096. and even

  1097. now friends

  1098. through the

  1099. church

  1100. the call

  1101. of God

  1102. the blessing

  1103. of God

  1104. the promises

  1105. of God

  1106. the life

  1107. of God

  1108. the salvation

  1109. of God

  1110. is extending

  1111. out all

  1112. over the world

  1113. right now

  1114. today

  1115. so friends

  1116. Abraham

  1117. built an altar

  1118. to the Lord

  1119. in a pagan

  1120. place full

  1121. of idols

  1122. and he made

  1123. proclamation

  1124. of the Lord

  1125. by name

  1126. to a majority

  1127. of unbelieving

  1128. people who

  1129. were opposed

  1130. to his faith

  1131. and that's

  1132. why he was

  1133. called

  1134. a friend

  1135. of God

  1136. and that's

  1137. how we too

  1138. can be called

  1139. friends

  1140. of God

  1141. the letter

  1142. of the Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1143. chapter 11

  1144. says this

  1145. and I'll

  1146. close with

  1147. these words

  1148. it says

  1149. by faith

  1150. Abraham

  1151. made his

  1152. home in

  1153. the promised

  1154. land

  1155. like a

  1156. stranger

  1157. in a

  1158. foreign

  1159. country

  1160. for he

  1161. was looking

  1162. forward to

  1163. the city

  1164. with foundations

  1165. whose architect

  1166. and builder

  1167. is God

  1168. in the name

  1169. of the Father

  1170. Son and Holy

  1171. Spirit

  1172. Amen
