  4. Good morning, Christchurch. My name is Carrie Moulton, and I'm a member of the Welcome Team.

  5. And today's reading is from the book of Genesis, chapter 18, verses 1 through 15, and chapter 21, verses 1 through 7.

    Genesis 18:1–15

  6. A reading from the book of Genesis.

  7. The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.

  8. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.

  9. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.

  10. He said,

  11. If I have found favor in your eyes, my Lord, do not pass by your servant.

  12. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.

  13. Let me get you something to eat so you can be refreshed and go on your way, now that you have come to your servant.

  14. Very well, they answered.

  15. Do as you say.

  16. So Abraham hurried to the tent to Sarah.

  17. Quick, he said, get three sias of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.

  18. Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice tender calf and gave it to a servant who hurried to prepare it.

  19. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared and set these before them.

  20. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

  21. Where is your wife Sarah, they asked him.

  22. There in the tent, he said.

  23. Then one of them said,

  24. I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah, your wife, will have a son.

  25. Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.

  26. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.

  27. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought,

  28. After I am worn out and my Lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?

  29. Then the Lord said to Abraham,

  30. Why did Sarah laugh and say,

  31. Will I really have a child now that I am old?

  32. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

  33. I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.

  34. Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said,

  35. I did not laugh.

  36. But he said,

  37. Yes, you did laugh.

  38. Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah, as he had said,

  39. and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.

  40. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age,

  41. at the very time God had promised him.

  42. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.

  43. When his son Isaac was eight days old,

  44. Abraham circumcised him as God commanded him.

  45. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

  46. Sarah said,

  47. God has brought me laughter,

  48. and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.

  49. And she added,

  50. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?

  51. Yet I have born him a son in his old age.

  52. The grass withers and the flowers fade,

  53. but the word of our God stands forever.

  54. Good morning, Christ Church.

  55. When we first moved here about 20 years ago to Berkeley to start this church,

  56. I read a book by Bill Bryson.

  57. Anybody read Bill Bryson?

  58. Phenomenal writer.

  59. He wrote a book around that time called A Short History of Nearly Everything.

  60. And I thought maybe this will help me as I'm preparing to be a pastor here in Berkeley.

  61. And he said this.

  62. He said,

  63. It appears that if you wish to have a planet suitable for life,

  64. you have to be just awfully lucky.

  65. And the more advanced the life, the luckier you have to be.

  66. We are to an almost uncanny degree,

  67. the right distance from the right sort of star.

  68. One that is big enough to radiate lots of energy,

  69. but not so big as to burn itself out swiftly.

  70. We are also fortunate to orbit where we do.

  71. Too much nearer and everything on earth would have boiled away,

  72. much farther away,

  73. and everything would have frozen.

  74. And what he's talking about there is that we live in a Goldilocks universe.

  75. We live in a Goldilocks solar system.

  76. It's not too big.

  77. It's not too small.

  78. Not too hot.

  79. Not too cold.

  80. Everything is just right.

  81. And the Christian interpretation of that data

  82. is that we're neither lucky nor fortunate,

  83. but rather that we have someone above us to thank.

  84. And, you know, when we explore this first and foundational book of the Bible,

  85. and we meet this God in Genesis 1 and 2,

  86. this God who said,

  87. Fiat Lux.

  88. Go Bears.

  89. Fiat Lux.

  90. Let there be light and bang.

  91. There was light.

  92. And this God who said,

  93. let there be a fine-tuned universe

  94. with physical constants that are precisely calibrated

  95. within an incredibly narrow range

  96. so as to make the existence of life possible.

  97. Let there be DNA.

  98. Let there be this double helix structure

  99. that encodes the biological information

  100. and instructions for making you, you.

  101. And let there be within that DNA

  102. all the incredible things that would make for the human eye

  103. and all of its brilliant complexity

  104. and all the human hand

  105. and its functional sophistication.

  106. You see, the creator God of Genesis 1 and 2

  107. who made this massive universe we live in

  108. and these marvelous bodies that we inhabit

  109. and who formed us in His image

  110. and breathed life into us,

  111. as Andrew prayed a minute ago,

  112. He's the same Redeemer God

  113. of the rest of Genesis,

  114. from Genesis to Revelation,

  115. that, in other words,

  116. the maker of heaven and earth

  117. is the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

  118. And from these people

  119. that God has put Himself in a relationship with

  120. will come Israel's Messiah

  121. and the world's true Lord

  122. through whom salvation will come into the world

  123. and He'll remake reality

  124. into a new heavens and a new earth.

  125. He'll resurrect our bodies.

  126. He'll grant us new and everlasting life

  127. in this new space, time, and matter universe.

  128. And we need to hold on to that big picture

  129. and this sweeping grand metanarrative

  130. when we, anytime we dive into the details

  131. of a text like this,

  132. the details of Abraham and Sarah

  133. and this life of faith

  134. that God is inviting them to journey into today.

  135. And as we dive into this,

  136. I want us to think about a couple things,

  137. three things, as always.

  138. I want us to think about God's power

  139. and God's grace and God's Son.

  140. God's power, God's grace, and God's Son.

  141. Now, I need your help today

  142. because I didn't get my day off this week

  143. and had to spend it all day Friday

  144. with a bunch of Presbyterians.

  145. So, I'm sort of riding on your enthusiasm

  146. and your intentiveness today.

  147. This will rise and fall

  148. on what you bring to the sermon.

  149. So, we're going to talk, first of all,

  150. about God's power.

  151. Okay?

  152. And in verse, chapter 18,

  153. we can see here that Abraham

  154. is a typical ancient Near Eastern Bedouin.

  155. He's living in a intense,

  156. this semi-nomadic life

  157. with his family and his flocks

  158. in this harsh desert conditions.

  159. There's no police force.

  160. There's no justice system.

  161. There's no hospital or urgent care.

  162. There's no Trader Joe's.

  163. And these three visitors,

  164. these three travelers come to Abraham

  165. and he has no idea who they are.

  166. We do as readers.

  167. We're told in verse 1,

  168. but Abraham doesn't have a clue.

  169. The only thing he knows

  170. is that these are three guests

  171. in these same harsh desert conditions

  172. who are in need of welcome

  173. and in need of hospitality.

  174. Now, we all know that xenophobia,

  175. the definition of xenophobia

  176. is the fear of strangers

  177. and that it's opposite.

  178. Xenophilia is the love of strangers.

  179. And in Abraham's day,

  180. it was your highest duty.

  181. It was a sacred virtue

  182. to practice xenophilia,

  183. to lavish hospitality

  184. on guests and strangers,

  185. to roll out the red carpet

  186. for people you didn't know

  187. to make them feel at home and at rest.

  188. And these guests received from Abraham

  189. this warm, gracious, royal welcome.

  190. Now, just pause as an aside right here

  191. to say that part of the mission

  192. of God's church

  193. in the midst of this epidemic

  194. of loneliness

  195. that we're living through

  196. and the erosion

  197. of all of our communities of trust.

  198. What we want to do

  199. and what we want to be

  200. is like Abraham

  201. where when guests arrive,

  202. we hurry over to them

  203. and we speak with them.

  204. Right?

  205. And you don't have to do like Abraham.

  206. You don't have to bow down on the ground.

  207. You know,

  208. a warm smile,

  209. a friendly handshake will do.

  210. But Abraham

  211. assesses the needs of these guests

  212. and he says,

  213. you know,

  214. what would honor them?

  215. What would make them feel refreshed?

  216. And again,

  217. you don't have to go bake bread

  218. or wash their feet

  219. or barbecue some choice meat.

  220. You just have to say,

  221. hey,

  222. what are you doing for lunch today?

  223. Hey,

  224. you want to come to our coffee hour?

  225. I want to invite you

  226. to my table

  227. and I want to invite you

  228. into my life.

  229. Again,

  230. Abraham has no idea

  231. who this is.

  232. He just gives them a welcome

  233. that's fit

  234. for God himself.

  235. And the book of Hebrews

  236. in the New Testament says,

  237. do not forget to show

  238. hospitality to strangers

  239. for by so doing,

  240. some people have shown

  241. hospitality to angels

  242. without knowing it.

  243. A direct reference

  244. to our text today.

  245. So it's not immediately apparent

  246. who this is,

  247. but we're told in verse 1

  248. it's the Lord

  249. and we're told in verse 13

  250. that the Lord is the one

  251. who's speaking.

  252. So it's clear that this is Yahweh

  253. and these are his two

  254. angelic messengers

  255. that he's brought with him

  256. and why has he come?

  257. Well,

  258. look at verse 9.

  259. It says,

  260. where is your wife Sarah?

  261. There in the tent,

  262. he said.

  263. And then the Lord said,

  264. I will surely return to you

  265. about this time next year

  266. and Sarah your wife

  267. will have a son.

  268. Now Sarah was listening

  269. at the entrance to the tent

  270. which was behind him.

  271. Abraham and Sarah

  272. were already very old

  273. and Sarah was past

  274. the age of childbearing

  275. so Sarah laughed to herself

  276. as she thought,

  277. after I am worn out

  278. and my Lord is old

  279. will I now have this pleasure?

  280. We've seen the Lord

  281. come for Abraham

  282. the past few weeks.

  283. But in this text,

  284. the Lord doesn't come

  285. for Abraham,

  286. he comes for Sarah.

  287. And we said last week,

  288. this is remarkable

  289. because in ancient

  290. Near Eastern literature,

  291. women hardly exist.

  292. But in the Bible,

  293. the first book of the Bible,

  294. they're part of the main

  295. cast of characters

  296. from Eve to Hagar

  297. to Sarah to Rebecca

  298. and Rachel and Leah.

  299. You get into Exodus,

  300. Shipra, Puah, Miriam.

  301. It's astounding.

  302. And the Lord doesn't come

  303. to talk to Abraham.

  304. He's sort of talking

  305. through Abraham at points

  306. because he wants

  307. a personal relationship

  308. with Sarah.

  309. Verse 9,

  310. where's Sarah?

  311. Verse 10,

  312. he knows that Sarah's

  313. listening at the entrance

  314. of the tent

  315. so he speaks a word

  316. to her

  317. and she becomes

  318. the focus

  319. of his attention

  320. for the rest

  321. of the text.

  322. What we know so far

  323. is that God

  324. has called Abraham,

  325. he's made promises

  326. to Abraham,

  327. Genesis 12,

  328. Genesis 15.

  329. Sarah knows

  330. this information

  331. but the question is

  332. where is she

  333. with the Lord?

  334. Does she know

  335. the Lord?

  336. Has she come

  337. to lean the full weight

  338. of her trust

  339. on the Lord?

  340. Because the scriptures

  341. tell us it's not

  342. good enough

  343. to just know

  344. the Lord

  345. through other people

  346. and everything

  347. she knows so far

  348. is through her husband

  349. Abraham.

  350. The question here is

  351. Sarah knows

  352. about the Lord

  353. but does she know

  354. the Lord?

  355. Has she had

  356. her own personal

  357. encounter and experience

  358. with the Lord?

  359. Now I've been a pastor

  360. long enough

  361. to see many girlfriends

  362. and wives drag guys

  363. to church

  364. and many parents

  365. drag their kids

  366. to church

  367. and I've seen it

  368. work in the opposite

  369. direction.

  370. Kids sometimes drag

  371. their parents to church

  372. and guys sometimes

  373. drag their significant

  374. others to church

  375. but what matters

  376. is have you met

  377. the Lord?

  378. Do you realize

  379. that he's seeking you?

  380. Do you realize

  381. that he knows

  382. your name?

  383. Where's Sarah?

  384. The Lord

  385. it's interesting

  386. he comes into her life

  387. in such a different way

  388. than he came into

  389. Abraham's life

  390. because if you remember

  391. back to Genesis 15

  392. the Lord

  393. appeared to Abraham

  394. in this super dramatic way

  395. in the darkness

  396. God is this

  397. you know

  398. this smoking pot

  399. and fiery torch

  400. sort of image of God

  401. and he's walking

  402. through these broken bodies

  403. and all this shed blood

  404. and you know

  405. how does

  406. how does God come

  407. to Sarah here?

  408. Totally different

  409. he comes in the middle

  410. of the day

  411. he comes in

  412. in such a personal

  413. such a familiar

  414. such an accessible

  415. and approachable

  416. way

  417. that they don't even know

  418. it's him

  419. for like most of the time

  420. and if you compare

  421. Genesis 15

  422. with Genesis 18

  423. you can see

  424. that the Lord

  425. comes into our lives

  426. in a variety

  427. of different ways

  428. sometimes dramatic

  429. and sometimes

  430. just natural

  431. and normal

  432. sometimes suddenly

  433. and a lot of times

  434. gradually

  435. sometimes it's super obvious

  436. sometimes it's just

  437. so subtle

  438. but he's a

  439. he's a God

  440. of both infinity

  441. and intimacy

  442. right

  443. and we've got to be careful

  444. we don't make one

  445. of those two

  446. more normative

  447. than the other

  448. we've got to be careful

  449. not to try to emulate

  450. someone else's experience

  451. of God

  452. or not to project

  453. our own experience

  454. of God

  455. onto other people

  456. and say

  457. well you're not

  458. a real

  459. spiritual person

  460. you're not a real

  461. Christian

  462. unless you've encountered

  463. God in the way

  464. that I have

  465. it's clear that

  466. the Lord wants

  467. a personal

  468. and direct relationship

  469. with Sarah

  470. and notice how

  471. he gets her attention

  472. he says

  473. where's Sarah

  474. and she must be

  475. thinking to herself

  476. okay how does

  477. this stranger

  478. whom I've never met

  479. know my name

  480. and then

  481. verse 10 says

  482. the Lord said

  483. I will surely return

  484. to you about this time

  485. next year

  486. and Sarah your wife

  487. will have a son

  488. now the Lord knows

  489. Sarah's listening

  490. and the Lord also knows

  491. that Sarah's had a lifetime

  492. of infertility

  493. and barrenness

  494. the Lord knows

  495. that now she's 90 years old

  496. she's well past

  497. the age of menopause

  498. Abraham's 100 years old

  499. the Lord knows

  500. that conception

  501. is impossible

  502. for this couple

  503. that's well beyond

  504. childbearing age

  505. the Lord knows

  506. that even if

  507. conception were possible

  508. a safe delivery

  509. a healthy birth

  510. would be out of the question

  511. the Lord knows

  512. that this couple

  513. is procreatively dead

  514. and that it would take

  515. a divine intervention

  516. it would take

  517. a supernatural work

  518. of almighty God

  519. for them to have

  520. a child

  521. and so the Lord

  522. reiterates

  523. his word

  524. and his promise

  525. knowing how ridiculous

  526. it sounds

  527. knowing how impossible

  528. it seems

  529. to see

  530. how she'll respond

  531. and verse 12

  532. says that

  533. Sarah laughed

  534. to herself

  535. as she thought

  536. after I'm worn out

  537. and my Lord is old

  538. will I now have

  539. this pleasure

  540. have any of you

  541. ever laughed

  542. at God

  543. you ever laughed

  544. at his word

  545. you ever laughed

  546. at the promises

  547. that he's made

  548. Sarah was not

  549. the first person

  550. to laugh at God

  551. if you go back

  552. to Genesis 17

  553. God tells Abraham

  554. he says

  555. your wife Sarah

  556. will be the mother

  557. of nations

  558. and kings of peoples

  559. will come

  560. from her

  561. and the text says

  562. that Abraham

  563. fell face down

  564. laughing

  565. with incredulous

  566. laughter

  567. Abraham laughed

  568. but the Lord

  569. transformed

  570. his unbelief

  571. into belief

  572. but Sarah's laugh

  573. is an indicator

  574. that Abraham's

  575. not been able

  576. to persuade her

  577. not been able

  578. to convince her

  579. not been able

  580. to win her

  581. over the way

  582. the Lord won him over

  583. her laughter

  584. means that

  585. her interest

  586. in the Lord's promise

  587. the Lord's covenant

  588. is not very deep

  589. that her belief

  590. in the Lord's power

  591. the Lord's ability

  592. is not very strong

  593. and secure

  594. at all

  595. and that's why

  596. he comes seeking her

  597. where's Sarah

  598. because he wants

  599. to draw her

  600. into this

  601. relationship

  602. of believing

  603. participation

  604. and establish her

  605. in his promises

  606. so how does this

  607. apply

  608. how do we apply

  609. this to our lives

  610. what does God

  611. say to Sarah

  612. listen

  613. you little mortal

  614. how dare you laugh

  615. at me

  616. the Lord

  617. of the universe

  618. no he says

  619. in verse 14

  620. he says

  621. is anything too

  622. hard

  623. for the Lord

  624. it's one of the

  625. great verses

  626. in the whole Bible

  627. it's repeated

  628. over and over

  629. and that word

  630. hard

  631. that word

  632. difficult

  633. can also be

  634. translated

  635. wonderful

  636. is there anything

  637. too wonderful

  638. for the Lord

  639. the Psalms

  640. use this

  641. word all the time

  642. if you read

  643. the prayer book

  644. of the Bible

  645. you'll see

  646. it says

  647. it talks about

  648. the God

  649. who works wonders

  650. and it says

  651. be filled

  652. with awe

  653. at his wonders

  654. tell of all

  655. his wonders

  656. praise his

  657. wonderful person

  658. praise his

  659. wonderful works

  660. and the question

  661. is anything

  662. too wonderful

  663. for the Lord

  664. reveals Sarah's

  665. basic problem

  666. it reveals

  667. our basic problem

  668. because her laughter

  669. is a laughter

  670. of incredulity

  671. and skepticism

  672. it's a laughter

  673. that's devoid

  674. of wonder

  675. a laughter

  676. that's devoid

  677. of awe

  678. and astonishment

  679. and adoration

  680. at the almighty

  681. power

  682. of the living

  683. God

  684. another place

  685. this text

  686. is repeated

  687. is in the

  688. prophet Jeremiah

  689. the prophet

  690. Jeremiah says

  691. in Jeremiah 32

  692. ah sovereign

  693. Lord

  694. you have made

  695. the heavens

  696. and the earth

  697. by your great

  698. power

  699. and your

  700. outstretched arm

  701. nothing is too

  702. hard

  703. for you

  704. now one of the

  705. things I'm

  706. fascinated by

  707. and maybe

  708. some of you

  709. can come and

  710. help me with this

  711. after the service

  712. but the James

  713. Webb telescope

  714. is sending back

  715. information

  716. and it's telling

  717. us that there

  718. are either

  719. 100 billion

  720. or 400 billion

  721. stars

  722. in the Milky Way

  723. galaxy alone

  724. which is a big

  725. difference

  726. and a lot

  727. of stars

  728. and then it

  729. says that

  730. there's either

  731. 100 billion

  732. or 200 trillion

  733. galaxies

  734. out there

  735. and we know

  736. that just our

  737. star

  738. our sun's

  739. energy output

  740. every second

  741. is equivalent

  742. to the explosion

  743. of 91 billion

  744. hydrogen bombs

  745. right

  746. we know

  747. so much

  748. more

  749. about

  750. the wonders

  751. of God's

  752. creation

  753. and the

  754. point here

  755. is this

  756. that if God

  757. can create

  758. all of this

  759. if God

  760. can make

  761. this massive

  762. universe

  763. and these

  764. marvelous

  765. bodies

  766. then he

  767. obviously

  768. does not

  769. find things

  770. difficult

  771. or stressful

  772. or overwhelming

  773. or exhausting

  774. the way

  775. that you

  776. and I

  777. might

  778. giving life

  779. to the

  780. procreatively

  781. dead

  782. becoming

  783. incarnate

  784. in the

  785. womb

  786. of a

  787. virgin

  788. dying

  789. on a

  790. cross

  791. for the

  792. sins

  793. of the

  794. whole

  795. world

  796. defeating

  797. death

  798. on the

  799. third

  800. day

  801. regenerating

  802. a sinner

  803. like me

  804. glorifying

  805. a sinner

  806. like you

  807. it's not

  808. a problem

  809. for him

  810. there are

  811. no difficulties

  812. there's no

  813. barriers

  814. there's no

  815. opposition

  816. that would

  817. render him

  818. impotent

  819. or unable

  820. to keep

  821. his promises

  822. and so what

  823. the Lord is

  824. doing is he's

  825. seeking Sarah

  826. and he's

  827. challenging Sarah

  828. and he's

  829. converting

  830. Sarah

  831. from unbelief

  832. to belief

  833. in his

  834. wonderful

  835. power

  836. and perhaps

  837. he's asking

  838. you the same

  839. question

  840. is there

  841. anything

  842. too

  843. wonderful

  844. for the

  845. Lord

  846. some of

  847. you are

  848. facing

  849. big

  850. things

  851. difficult

  852. things

  853. but is

  854. your God

  855. too small

  856. have you

  857. put God

  858. in a box

  859. are you

  860. imposing

  861. unnecessary

  862. limitations

  863. on God's

  864. power

  865. is God

  866. able to

  867. do

  868. beyond

  869. what all

  870. all that

  871. you can

  872. ask or

  873. imagine

  874. and where

  875. is your

  876. wonder

  877. where

  878. where's

  879. your

  880. awe

  881. where's

  882. your

  883. astonishment

  884. and adoration

  885. of the

  886. almighty

  887. power

  888. of the

  889. living

  890. God

  891. he delights

  892. in exercising

  893. his power

  894. to do

  895. things that

  896. are hard

  897. and to

  898. do things

  899. that are

  900. wonderful

  901. and not

  902. only can

  903. he bring

  904. about the

  905. supernatural

  906. birth

  907. of this

  908. promised

  909. son

  910. Isaac

  911. but

  912. he's

  913. also

  914. able

  915. to affect

  916. the

  917. supernatural

  918. rebirth

  919. and conversion

  920. of Sarah's

  921. heart

  922. and if he

  923. did that

  924. for her

  925. man

  926. he can

  927. do it

  928. for anyone

  929. he can

  930. do it

  931. for you

  932. he can

  933. do it

  934. for all

  935. the people

  936. in your

  937. life

  938. so

  939. God's

  940. God's

  941. power

  942. again

  943. I was

  944. with

  945. Presbyterians

  946. all day

  947. on Friday

  948. so

  949. help

  950. help a

  951. brother

  952. out

  953. let's

  954. talk about

  955. God's

  956. grace

  957. the

  958. Hebrew

  959. name

  960. that

  961. Abraham

  962. and Sarah

  963. gave

  964. to their

  965. son

  966. means

  967. laughter

  968. Isaac

  969. laughter

  970. and

  971. if you

  972. look at

  973. chapter 21

  974. verse 6

  975. it says

  976. Sarah said

  977. God has

  978. brought me

  979. laughter

  980. and everyone

  981. who hears

  982. about this

  983. will laugh

  984. with me

  985. well wasn't

  986. she already

  987. laughing

  988. well

  989. I want

  990. to

  991. more closely

  992. examine

  993. the different

  994. kinds

  995. of laughter

  996. here

  997. because

  998. in the

  999. first

  1000. part

  1001. of the

  1002. story

  1003. Sarah's

  1004. laughing

  1005. with a

  1006. laughter

  1007. of

  1008. incredulity

  1009. and skepticism

  1010. but it's

  1011. clear by the

  1012. second part

  1013. of the

  1014. story

  1015. God has

  1016. transformed

  1017. her

  1018. laughter

  1019. into a

  1020. laughter

  1021. of belief

  1022. and a

  1023. laughter

  1024. of wonder

  1025. and how

  1026. do we

  1027. move

  1028. from one

  1029. kind of

  1030. laughter

  1031. to the

  1032. other

  1033. how did

  1034. that work

  1035. for Sarah

  1036. how

  1037. might it

  1038. work

  1039. for you

  1040. again

  1041. chapter 18

  1042. verse 12

  1043. so Sarah

  1044. laughed

  1045. and she

  1046. laughed to

  1047. herself

  1048. and she

  1049. thought

  1050. this

  1051. to

  1052. herself

  1053. she

  1054. thought

  1055. after I

  1056. am worn

  1057. out

  1058. and my

  1059. Lord is

  1060. old

  1061. will I

  1062. now have

  1063. this

  1064. pleasure

  1065. now what

  1066. is she

  1067. laughingly

  1068. thinking

  1069. to herself

  1070. she says

  1071. I am

  1072. worn

  1073. out

  1074. and that

  1075. word

  1076. means

  1077. I am

  1078. useless

  1079. I am

  1080. worthless

  1081. I am

  1082. good for

  1083. nothing

  1084. I am

  1085. a nobody

  1086. perhaps

  1087. you've

  1088. had that

  1089. thought

  1090. run through

  1091. your head

  1092. she says

  1093. will I

  1094. have

  1095. pleasure

  1096. will I

  1097. have

  1098. the

  1099. blessings

  1100. of

  1101. motherhood

  1102. see

  1103. after a

  1104. lifetime

  1105. of

  1106. barrenness

  1107. and

  1108. infertility

  1109. this

  1110. has

  1111. become

  1112. her

  1113. identity

  1114. her

  1115. core

  1116. self

  1117. is

  1118. defined

  1119. by

  1120. what

  1121. she

  1122. is

  1123. not

  1124. rather

  1125. than

  1126. by

  1127. what

  1128. she

  1129. is

  1130. and

  1131. a

  1132. life

  1133. of

  1134. long

  1135. disappointment

  1136. has

  1137. taught

  1138. her

  1139. this

  1140. unbelieving

  1141. hopelessness

  1142. and

  1143. despair

  1144. which

  1145. of course

  1146. she

  1147. doesn't

  1148. share

  1149. with

  1150. anyone

  1151. she

  1152. just

  1153. keeps

  1154. all

  1155. of

  1156. these

  1157. emotions

  1158. hidden

  1159. and

  1160. buried

  1161. in

  1162. her

  1163. head

  1164. and

  1165. in

  1166. her

  1167. heart

  1168. she

  1169. dares

  1170. not

  1171. laugh

  1172. out

  1173. loud

  1174. she

  1175. laughs

  1176. on

  1177. the

  1178. inside

  1179. to

  1180. herself

  1181. and

  1182. she

  1183. laughs

  1184. not only

  1185. because

  1186. God

  1187. is

  1188. unable

  1189. she

  1190. laughs

  1191. because

  1192. she

  1193. is

  1194. useless

  1195. and

  1196. she

  1197. has

  1198. this

  1199. strong

  1200. inner

  1201. critic

  1202. this

  1203. inner

  1204. voice

  1205. of

  1206. devastating

  1207. self

  1208. hatred

  1209. I'm

  1210. worthless

  1211. not only

  1212. disdaining

  1213. God

  1214. but deriding

  1215. herself

  1216. and too

  1217. many of

  1218. us

  1219. know

  1220. what

  1221. that

  1222. is

  1223. like

  1224. can

  1225. any

  1226. of you

  1227. relate

  1228. to

  1229. the

  1230. complexity

  1231. of

  1232. Sarah's

  1233. story

  1234. world

  1235. I

  1236. we

  1237. had

  1238. time

  1239. to

  1240. explore

  1241. it

  1242. together

  1243. but

  1244. how

  1245. does

  1246. the

  1247. Lord

  1248. respond

  1249. how

  1250. does

  1251. the

  1252. Lord

  1253. look

  1254. upon

  1255. us

  1256. and

  1257. relate

  1258. to

  1259. us

  1260. does

  1261. he

  1262. say

  1263. Sarah

  1264. great

  1265. point

  1266. you

  1267. are

  1268. you

  1269. are

  1270. spot

  1271. on

  1272. you

  1273. absolutely

  1274. are

  1275. nothing

  1276. you

  1277. are

  1278. worthless

  1279. you

  1280. are

  1281. useless

  1282. no

  1283. he

  1284. says

  1285. in

  1286. verse

  1287. 13

  1288. the

  1289. Lord

  1290. said

  1291. to

  1292. Abraham

  1293. why

  1294. did

  1295. Sarah

  1296. laugh

  1297. and

  1298. say

  1299. well

  1300. I

  1301. have

1302. old is anything too hard for the Lord. I will return to you at the appointed time next year

1303. and Sarah will have a son. Now there's a mild rebuke in there because the Lord is astonished

1304. at her unbelief and he's astonished when we fail to believe in him.

1305. But it's a gentle rebuke because he knows he's asking us to believe big things and wonderful

1306. things. And so he gives her this reassurance. He says, I'm going to come back to you because I'm

1307. the Lord. I'm the Lord who's chosen you. I'm the Lord who has a plan for you. I'm the Lord who's

1308. planned an entire timeline for your life. And so did Sarah respond and say, well, wow, what a relief.

1309. Now I see myself as you see me. Now I trust in your trustworthiness. No. Verse 15 says,

1310. Sarah was afraid so she lied and said, I did not laugh but he said, yes, you did laugh. And it's

1311. like one of the most awkward, uncomfortable scenes in the whole Bible. Like the nervous laughter when

1312. it was read is just telling. Somehow this mysterious stranger outside whom she cannot see is powerful

1313. enough to read her mind and verbalize her innermost secret thoughts. And this means that whether you

1314. like it or not, you're known. You're known. And does the Lord explode at her when she lies?

1315. When she denies the truth and deceives? No, it's, the scriptures say that God's a wonderful counselor.

1316. And he comes in this gentle way. I imagine him kind of smiling and putting his arm around

1317. Sarah and saying, yeah, you did laugh. And he's not just speaking the truth and love to her as we

1318. must do. Not just trying to hold her accountable for her words. Not just wanting his people to be

1319. truth tellers. No, he's saying, I want you to acknowledge the wonderlessness of your laugh.

1320. And somehow over the next 12 months, between Genesis 18 and Genesis 21, the Lord amazingly

1321. transforms Sarah's laugh from that laughter of incredulity and bitterness and cynicism and despair

1322. and hopelessness into a laughter of joy, a laughter of grace, a laughter of faith and wonder and hope.

1323. And you can see it in chapter 21. In verse 1, it says, now the Lord was gracious. The Lord was

1324. gracious to Sarah. And he said, and the Lord, the Lord did for Sarah what he'd promised. And Sarah

1325. became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, the very time God had promised. And Abraham

1326. gave the name Yitzhak. He laughs to the son that Sarah bore him. He's a God of grace.

1327. He graciously gives the son of laughter to show Sarah that he's sovereignly in control.

1328. And that his word is reliable. He does not make empty promises, but he makes gracious promises. And

1329. then he faithfully fulfills those promises precisely as he said he would. And Sarah's response to this is

1330. she breaks out into poetry to express her wonder and to express her joy at the grace of God, the grace

1331. of what God has done for her. She says in verse 6, God has brought me laughter and everyone who hears

1332. about this will laugh with me. And she added, who would have said that to Abraham that Sarah would

1333. nurse children? Yet I have born him a son in his old age. She says, who would have said that Sarah would

1334. nurse children? She's looking beyond this singular child, Isaac, to children, to Isaac's children,

1335. and to their children's children, and to the great nation that God had promised, and to the kings of

1336. nations, the peoples that would come from her womb that would bless the whole world.

1337. And she's inviting everyone who hears this story to contemplate the power and the grace of God.

1338. God causes the laughter of incredulity to give way to the laughter of grace. And that God causes Sarah's

1339. hopeless despair to be transformed into joyous praise. Now friends, again, how do we apply this to

1340. our lives? Well, first of all, it's kind of a picture of when you become a Christian, right? When you become

1341. a Christian, you get a new identity. You get a new self-image in the way that Sarah does here. She gets this

1342. new joyful relationship with God. She says, God has brought me laughter. God has been so gracious to me.

1343. But you also get this new joyful relationship with others. She says, when people hear the story of God's

1344. gracious intervention and God's salvation in my life, they're going to laugh with me. I'm going to be part of a

1345. community of laughter. And then she gets a new joyful relationship with herself. She who called herself

1346. worthless? She says, who would have thought that my story would have turned out this way? And that's how

1347. you feel when you become a Christian. You say, who would have thought that me, of all people, would be a

1348. Christian? Amazing love. How can it be that thou, my God, should die for me? Joyful, joyful, we adore thee.

1349. God of glory. God of glory, Lord of love. It's a new identity. But secondly, the second application is that

1350. when you become a Christian, you get a new relationship with your failures. Right? Because the one time God

1351. comes to Sarah, she laughs in his face. And it's like her one moment. It's her one moment. And she, it's

1352. probably the greatest failure of her life. Right? And yet her son's name is what? Laughter. Right? From

1353. now on, every time Abraham and Sarah say Isaac's name, they're going to remember that they laughed at God

1354. in disbelief. But they're also going to remember that God always has the last laugh. That we do not live in

1355. a tragedy. We live in a comedy. The child's name is a memorial to remind Sarah and Abraham both of

1356. their faithlessness and of God's faithfulness. And you see, grace enables you to look upon your past

1357. failures. It enables you to look at your bitter laughter in the face of God's promises and to realize

1358. that he loves you. And that he accepts you in spite of all your failures. And then that the memory of

1359. all of your past faithlessness shows you just how good and how gracious God really is. And that only

1360. increases your gratitude to praise him more and more for his faithfulness. And then it in turn makes you

1361. into a person who's humble and compassionate toward the failures of others. That's God's grace.

1362. So, I'm running out of time. Blame the Presbyterians on Friday. But I do want to talk not only about

1363. God's power and God's grace, but just close with a word on God's Son. And as we close, I want to caution

1364. you against a particular way of interpreting the Bible. Because we can read this and we can say,

1365. oh, okay, I got it. Sarah was old. She wanted something. She wanted a child. She believed. And

1366. she got what she wanted. Therefore, if we really believe, if we pray, if we trust God who says,

1367. is anything too hard or too wonderful for me, then we should expect all the impossible things to become

1368. possible. And we should stop settling for less. We should have greater visions, greater, bigger goals.

1369. We should ask God for amazing things. We should trust God for physical health and material wealth

1370. and unbroken prosperity and happiness and success in a life that just goes up and to the right.

1371. Anybody ever heard Christians suggest this? Well, I want to point out two things. First of all, that this text

1372. does not teach us if we believe like Sarah, then God will do incredible things. Because the whole point of the

1373. story is that Sarah didn't believe. She's not seeking God. She's not on her knees. She laughs in God's face.

1374. And when God comes down to bless her and do incredible things for her, he does it in spite of her unbelief.

1375. She does eventually believe, but my goodness. And the second thing I want to point out is that this text is

1376. wanting us to look at what happened to the son of promise. And of course, in this story, the son of promise is Isaac.

1377. But who's the real son of promise? Who's the true and better Isaac? That son of promise that was born

1378. in a ridiculous and laughable situation? Who was born to that woman who wasn't just infertile. She had no husband.

1379. In the Gospel of Luke says that the Lord came to her and through his angel, he said to her,

1380. the Lord is with you and you will conceive in your womb and you'll bear a son. And Mary said to the angel,

1381. she said, how can this be since I'm a virgin? And the angel answered her, nothing will be impossible

1382. with God. Nothing's too wonderful for God. And what happened to this promised child? Did he get physical

1383. health? Did he get material wealth? Did he get unbroken prosperity and happiness and success and a

1384. life that goes up and to the right? No, the greatest person who ever lived in the history of planet earth

1385. this man who had more faith than all of us combined, this man whose prayer life was a trillion times

1386. greater than any of our prayer lives,

1387. this man who trusted that nothing's too wonderful for God. What happened to him? He died on a cross,

1388. abandoned by his friends, mocked by his enemies, forsaken by his God. And why does God,

1389. in his wisdom, put the cross at the center of history and the center of reality? Why does he want us to keep

1390. our eyes fixed there? Because he wants us to see that the ultimate Isaac, the ultimate son of laughter,

1391. the one in whom we hear the laughter of God, the one who lived in a world of heavenly laughter, the one

1392. that says he was at the father's side, he was in the father's bosom from all eternity. They were

1393. infinitely laughing and rejoicing in each other. That he came into this world to become a man of sorrows,

1394. to become acquainted with grief, to be overcome with weeping at the tomb of his friend Lazarus,

1395. to be torn apart by the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, to be crushed under the agony of

1396. Gethsemane and to cry out on his cross, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

1397. And the whole point is that Jesus lost the divine laughter so that you and I could get it.

1398. And he took our place of misery and condemnation

1399. to deal with sin and death so that we could live forever with him in laughter.

1400. Friends, God and Jesus Christ has trampled down all the impossibilities of our situation

1401. so that we can say like Sarah, who would have thought?

1402. Who would have thought? Who would have said that we who were trapped forever in sin and death

1403. would be liberated to live with God everlastingly?

1404. Who would have thought? Who would have said that in spite of all the ways that we have lived,

1405. we'd be adopted into the very family of God?

1406. See, friends, God has done the ridiculous.

1407. God has done the laughable.

  1408. He's welcomed us strangers.

1409. Indeed, he's welcomed us enemies to his feast at his table.

1410. And so I want to encourage you with Paul's words in Romans 8, 32.

  1411. He says,

1412. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  1413. Amen.
