  4. Good morning. I am Abigail Todd and I am part of CC Kids.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Genesis, chapter 25, verses 21 to 23, and chapter 27, verses 1 to 4, and 15 to 34, as printed in the liturgy.

    Genesis 25:21–23

  6. A reading from the book of Genesis.

  7. Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless.

  8. The Lord answered his prayer and his wife Rebecca became pregnant.

  9. The babies jostled each other within her and she said, why is this happening to me?

  10. So she went to inquire of the Lord.

  11. The Lord said to her, two nations are in your womb and two peoples from within you will be separated.

  12. One people will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger.

  13. When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak he could no longer see, he called for Esau, his older son, and said to him, my son.

  14. Here I am, he answered.

  15. Isaac said, I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

  16. Now then, get your equipment, your quiver and bow, and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

  17. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat so that I may give you my blessing before I die.

  18. Then Rebecca took the best clothes of Esau, her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

  19. She also covered his hands in the smooth part of his neck with goat skins.

  20. Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and bread she had made.

  21. He went to his father and said, my father.

  22. Yes, my son, he answered.

  23. Who is it?

  24. Jacob said to his father, I am Esau, your firstborn.

  25. I have done as you told me.

  26. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing.

  27. Isaac asked his son, how did you find it so quickly, my son?

  28. The Lord your God gave me success, he replied.

  29. Then Isaac said to Jacob, come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.

  30. Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, the voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

  31. He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau.

  32. So he proceeded to bless him.

  33. Are you really my son Esau, he asked.

  34. I am, he replied.

  35. Then he said, my son, bring me some of your game to eat so that I may give you my blessing.

  36. Jacob brought it to him and he ate, and he brought some wine and he drank.

  37. Then his father Isaac said to him, come here, my son, and kiss me.

  38. So he went to him and kissed him.

  39. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, ah, the smell of my son is the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.

  40. May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness, an abundance of grain and new wine.

  41. May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you.

  42. Be lord of your brothers and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.

  43. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.

  44. After Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting.

  45. He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father.

  46. Then he said to him, my father, please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing.

  47. His father Isaac said to him, who are you?

  48. I'm your son, he answered, your firstborn Esau.

  49. Isaac trembled violently and said, who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me?

  50. I ate it just before you came and I blessed him and indeed he will be blessed.

  51. When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, bless me, me too, my father.

  52. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.

  53. All right.

  54. What a wonderful recitation from Psalm 23.

  55. And what a wonderful reading from Genesis 27.

  56. I don't know if you have read many Russian novels, but Leo Tolstoy was a Russian novelist and he wrote a novel called Anna Karenina.

  57. And the opening of that novel, the very first sentence, he says,

  58. Happy families are all alike.

  59. Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

  60. If you came here today and you're feeling a little discouraged about your family,

  61. the message of Genesis 27 is cheer up because things could be a whole lot worse.

  62. Okay.

  63. The holy family we meet here is actually quite unholy and therefore quite unhappy.

  64. And that's crazy because if you're familiar with Genesis, you go to Genesis 24,

  65. what you find there is one of the first and best love stories in all of world literature.

  66. It's a story about how Isaac and Rebecca became husband and wife.

  67. And then we heard a little bit in Genesis 25 there where Rebecca, his wife, is barren.

  68. She's struggling with infertility for 20 years.

  69. And Isaac prays for her for 20 years.

  70. And it says that Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife and the Lord answered his prayer.

  71. So it's an amazing love story.

  72. But by the time you get to Genesis 27, they're not speaking to one another.

  73. They are at cross purposes with each other.

  74. This marriage is in trouble.

  75. And so if you're reading the story, you're thinking to yourself,

  76. well, what happened to this marriage made in heaven?

  77. What happened to the spiritual union?

  78. What happened to their covenantal intimacy?

  79. Why are they now prayerless?

  80. They're not even talking to God.

  81. Why are they so dysfunctional?

  82. Why are they so uncommunicative?

  83. And by the way, aren't these supposed to be God's chosen people?

  84. Aren't they supposed to be carrying within themselves the very promises of God

  85. and the blessings of God on Abraham to all the nations of the world?

  86. Why are they being such poor spouses and partners to each other in this story?

  87. And what's more, how did they become such terrible parents to their kids?

  88. Now, when we planned our parenting class for today,

  89. we did not look ahead at the scripture lesson.

  90. But God knows.

  91. God has a sense of humor.

  92. And the story is, of course, much deeper than this.

  93. But parents, don't show favoritism to your kids.

  94. Don't compare them with each other.

  95. Don't say, hey, this is actually my kid and that's your kid.

  96. Don't have divided loyalties.

  97. And of course, if you get nothing else from today,

  98. it's fine to dress your kid up on Halloween.

  99. But please, do not go to the level of Genesis 27

  100. and dress up your favorite kid

  101. in order to deceive your spouse

  102. that they're actually blessing their favorite kid.

  103. I say this because the Bible is actually quite shocking.

  104. We come to it with certain expectations.

  105. We come to the Bible thinking it's going to give us some sort of spiritual uplift,

  106. thinking that the Bible is going to give us some moral inspiration,

  107. maybe a little chicken soup for the soul.

  108. And we very quickly begin to realize

  109. that the Bible is this soap opera of epic proportions.

  110. Right?

  111. It's a bizarre reality TV drama.

  112. And in one episode after another,

  113. we witness this just tragic downward spiral of human failure.

  114. And today's story is actually quite bleak.

  115. There's jealousy.

  116. There's power struggles.

  117. There's deception.

  118. There's betrayal.

  119. It's like a Russian novel.

  120. And it basically ends with everyone falling apart,

  121. trembling violently, crying bitterly.

  122. Everybody feeling spiritually uplifted so far?

  123. All right.

  124. Awesome.

  125. So what we're going to talk about is

  126. we're going to talk about the power of God's blessing

  127. and the dysfunction of God's family

  128. and the triumph of God's grace.

  129. The power of God's blessing,

  130. the dysfunction of God's family,

  131. and the triumph of God's grace.

  132. First of all,

  133. the power of God's blessing.

  134. The word bless or blessing in Genesis 22 or 2027

  135. occurs many times.

  136. It occurs 22 times.

  137. It's a key word in this text.

  138. And you hear it there in verse 4 of Genesis 27

  139. where Isaac says to Esau,

  140. he says,

  141. prepare me the kind of tasty food I like

  142. and bring it to me to eat

  143. so that I may give you my blessing before I die.

  144. And then down in verse 19,

  145. it says,

  146. What does that word blessing mean?

  147. It's a religious-sounding word.

  148. We say a blessing at a meal.

  149. We say bless you when you sneeze.

  150. We say I'm feeling so blessed when life is going well.

  151. We say, you know,

  152. bless you or bless in the south.

  153. We say bless your heart.

  154. But we post pictures on Instagram

  155. of our recent vacation,

  156. and we say hashtag blessed.

  157. But what does the word even mean?

  158. It's that the English word is just so vague, actually.

  159. It's so weak and so shallow

  160. that we need to go back to Genesis 1

  161. where the story of the Bible begins

  162. with this God who brings life out of the darkness,

  163. and he's ordering this beautiful world,

  164. and he gives the first blessing in the Bible.

  165. And he blesses the animals that he's made.

  166. And what does he say to them?

  167. He says,

  168. Be fruitful and multiply.

  169. Fill the earth.

  170. Fill the sea.

  171. Fill the sky.

  172. So blessing is about flourishing.

  173. It's about the multiplication of life.

  174. Blessing is about God sharing

  175. his life-producing ability with others.

  176. And we read in Genesis 1-2

  177. that God then blesses humans,

  178. and he says,

  179. I'm making you in my image.

  180. You're gonna be fruitful

  181. and multiply with life,

  182. and you're to rule and steward over

  183. the blessing that I've given

  184. to this flourishing world.

  185. And of course,

  186. as we've been tracking the story,

  187. Genesis 3,

  188. pretty immediately,

  189. humanity says,

  190. Well, no,

  191. we don't want the blessing that way.

  192. We want the blessing this way.

  193. We want the blessing on our terms.

  194. And then the world begins to fall apart.

  195. Fast forward to Genesis 12.

  196. I think we have a slide on this

  197. where God chooses one couple.

  198. He blesses Abraham and Sarah.

  199. He says,

  200. You're gonna have a huge family.

  201. You're gonna be fruitful.

  202. You're gonna multiply with life.

  203. And through you,

  204. my blessing of spiritual life

  205. is gonna go out to all the nations.

  206. And this is God's plan.

  207. This is God's way

  208. that he's going to reverse the curse

  209. on humanity

  210. through this one family.

  211. That the blessing of spiritual life

  212. on Abraham and Sarah

  213. is the thing

  214. that's driving the drama

  215. of the book of Genesis.

  216. And really,

  217. it's the thing that's driving

  218. the drama of the whole Bible.

  219. You just can't get the Bible

  220. unless you get that.

  221. And so our story today says,

  222. you know,

  223. okay,

  224. without God's blessing of life,

  225. there's no hope for this world

  226. that's stuck in sin and death.

  227. And right now,

  228. this blessing

  229. moving from one generation

  230. to the next generation,

  231. it really hangs in the balance.

  232. Here you have Isaac,

  233. the son of Abraham.

  234. Isaac,

  235. the son of promise,

  236. the son of the covenant,

  237. the son of blessing.

  238. And he has a wonderful,

  239. believing wife,

  240. but they have no kids.

  241. And in Genesis 25, 21,

  242. his wife Rebecca

  243. has been barren for 20 years.

  244. That's a problem.

  245. How's the blessing

  246. going to go on

  247. to the next generation?

  248. So Isaac prays

  249. to the Lord

  250. on her behalf.

  251. He intercedes for her.

  252. And the Lord uses

  253. the means of his prayer

  254. to bless her with life.

  255. And he blesses her

  256. not just with one kid,

  257. but with two kids

  258. in her womb.

  259. And the question is,

  260. which of those sons

  261. is going to inherit

  262. the blessing?

  263. And that's the question

  264. that's driving

  265. the entire plot line.

  266. You with me so far?

  267. Now, I want to argue,

  268. and I think the text,

  269. the narrator argues,

  270. that even though Isaac,

  271. Rebecca, Esau, and Jacob

  272. are wrong

  273. in the way that they give

  274. and receive

  275. this blessing of life,

  276. this divine blessing of life,

  277. and we'll get to that

  278. in a moment,

  279. they are absolutely right

  280. in their desire to have it.

  281. They're absolutely right

  282. because there's no greater

  283. treasure in the world

  284. than this divine blessing

  285. of life on Abraham

  286. because through him

  287. and through his descendants,

  288. God has said salvation

  289. is going to come

  290. to the whole world.

  291. And what's surprising

  292. in this text

  293. is that Isaac intends

  294. to pass this blessing

  295. on to Esau,

  296. but he actually gives it

  297. to Jacob instead.

  298. And you may be wondering

  299. to yourself,

  300. like I was wondering

  301. when I read it,

  302. why didn't Isaac

  303. just take it back?

  304. Anybody wondering that?

  305. Why didn't he just say,

  306. Jacob, you scoundrel,

  307. you're not even

  308. my favorite child.

  309. Jacob, you're a cheater

  310. and you're a deceiver

  311. and you're canceled, right?

  312. I take it back.

  313. Well, I don't know about you,

  314. but my older brother

  315. taught me when I was a kid,

  316. there are no takebacks, right?

  317. There are no do-overs.

  318. That got pounded

  319. into the old brain here.

  320. And we all know that

  321. since childhood,

  322. but also,

  323. it's just not how blessings work.

  324. You know it from your own story.

  325. You know it if you've gone

  326. to counseling

  327. or talked to your therapist

  328. that the words people say to us,

  329. whether they're words of blessing

  330. or they're words of cursing,

  331. they have power, don't they?

  332. They stick in our heads,

  333. they get lodged in our hearts,

  334. they work their way

  335. into the innermost parts

  336. of our being,

  337. and those words of blessing

  338. or those words of cursing,

  339. they shape our lives.

  340. They form our narratives

  341. and our beliefs

  342. about ourselves in this world.

  343. They form our thoughts

  344. and our feelings.

  345. They shape our sense of identity

  346. and belonging

  347. and meaning and purpose

  348. in the world.

  349. And so you can't just take them back.

  350. Many people,

  351. I've seen many people

  352. spend a good portion

  353. of their lives

  354. seeking a blessing

  355. that they wanted

  356. from a parent

  357. but they never got.

  358. And I've also seen

  359. many, many people

  360. trying to get over words

  361. of cursing

  362. that lodged inside of them

  363. like shrapnel

  364. that's sort of creeping

  365. up to their heart.

  366. And what we should have learned

  367. as kids

  368. and what we should have said

  369. to each other as kids

  370. is sticks and stones

  371. may break my bones

  372. but words can make

  373. or break my very soul.

  374. Right?

  375. Words have deep power.

  376. It's not just as simple

  377. as take it back.

  378. And if that's the way it is

  379. with our everyday words

  380. and our offhanded comments,

  381. our simple words

  382. of affirmation

  383. or condemnation,

  384. our simple encouragement

  385. or criticism,

  386. then how much more so

  387. with this divine

  388. supernatural blessing

  389. and this end of life

  390. last will and testament

  391. moment with the son

  392. of Abraham

  393. speaking formal words,

  394. speaking legal

  395. and binding words,

  396. passing on not just

  397. his parental

  398. and personal blessing

  399. but passing on

  400. the life-giving blessing

  401. of Almighty God.

  402. Can't just take it back.

  403. So how does this apply

  404. to our lives?

  405. Well, I just want to say

  406. that every single one

  407. of you

  408. and every person

  409. you meet

  410. is made for God's blessing

  411. and you're never

  412. going to be content

  413. without it.

  414. The book of Ecclesiastes

  415. has a wonderful

  416. verse.

  417. In Ecclesiastes 3.11

  418. it says,

  419. God has set eternity

  420. in the human heart.

  421. St. Augustine

  422. famously said,

  423. O Lord,

  424. you've made us

  425. for yourself

  426. and our hearts

  427. are restless

  428. until they find

  429. their rest in you.

  430. And what Ecclesiastes

  431. and what Augustine

  432. is saying is,

  433. look,

  434. you have a God-shaped

  435. eternity-sized

  436. hole in your heart

  437. and only a God-shaped

  438. eternity-sized

  439. blessing

  440. is going to fill it.

  441. And we see people,

  442. maybe you're one

  443. of these people,

  444. you try to find

  445. the blessing

  446. in the approval

  447. of your parents.

  448. You try to find

  449. the blessing

  450. in the arms

  451. of a lover.

  452. You try to find

  453. the blessing

  454. in fancy degrees

  455. from elite universities,

  456. from the security

  457. of a big bank account,

  458. from the satisfaction

  459. of a successful career.

  460. You try to find

  461. the blessing

  462. in the comfort

  463. of food or drink.

  464. And it's kind

  465. of elusive, right?

  466. I've been thinking

  467. about this a lot

  468. as our daughter

  469. is a senior

  470. in high school

  471. and she's applying

  472. to colleges,

  473. applying for scholarships,

  474. and that means

  475. that we've been

  476. receiving a ton

  477. of mail

  478. over this past year,

  479. an incredible amount

  480. of mail

  481. from admissions offices

  482. that are recruiting

  483. her to apply.

  484. And these glossy mailers

  485. are making massive promises

  486. to my daughter

  487. about how her life

  488. is going to change

  489. for the better,

  490. how her life

  491. is going to improve

  492. dramatically

  493. should this particular

  494. school decide

  495. to confer upon her

  496. the blessing

  497. of acceptance.

  498. Right?

  499. And everything hangs

  500. on getting accepted,

  501. getting in.

  502. If the right people

  503. say you're the right person

  504. and you can come

  505. to this institution,

  506. you'll be blessed.

  507. And this is very important

  508. because where you go

  509. is who you're going

  510. to be, right?

  511. Your degree,

  512. the brand,

  513. the friends,

  514. the network,

  515. the job prospects,

  516. your earning potential,

  517. we have the ability

  518. to give you the blessing.

  519. C.S. Lewis

  520. was a professor

  521. at the University

  522. of Oxford

  523. and Cambridge

  524. and he gave a lecture

  525. called

  526. The Inner Ring,

  527. capital I,

  528. capital R,

  529. Inner Ring.

  530. And this is a lengthy quote

  531. but I think it's worth

  532. giving to you.

  533. He says,

  534. I believe that in all

  535. men's lives

  536. at certain periods

  537. and in many men's lives

  538. at all periods

  539. between infancy

  540. and extreme old age,

  541. one of the most

  542. dominant elements

  543. is the desire

  544. to be inside

  545. the local ring

  546. and the terror

  547. of being left outside.

  548. Think of our longing

  549. to enter

  550. the inner ring,

  551. our anguish

  552. when we are excluded

  553. and the kind of pleasure

  554. we feel

  555. when we get in.

  556. The desire

  557. is one of the great

  558. permanent mainsprings

  559. of human action.

  560. It is one of the factors

  561. which go to make up

  562. the world

  563. as we know it,

  564. this whole pell-mell

  565. of struggle,

  566. competition,

  567. confusion,

  568. graft,

  569. disappointment,

  570. and advertisement

  571. and if it is one

  572. of the permanent

  573. mainsprings

  574. then you may be

  575. quite sure of this.

  576. Unless you take measures

  577. to prevent it,

  578. this desire

  579. is going to be

  580. one of the chief

  581. motives of your life

  582. from the first day

  583. on which you enter

  584. your profession

  585. until the day

  586. when you are too old

  587. to care.

  588. Whether by pining

  589. or moping outside

  590. rings that you

  591. can never enter

  592. or by passing

  593. triumphantly further

  594. and further in,

  595. one way or the other

  596. you will be

  597. an inner ringer.

  598. The quest

  599. of the inner ring

  600. will break your hearts

  601. unless you break it.

  602. To a young person

  603. just entering

  604. adult life

  605. the world seems

  606. full of insides,

  607. full of delightful

  608. intimacies

  609. and confidentialities

  610. and he desires

  611. to enter them

  612. but if he follows

  613. that desire

  614. he will reach

  615. no inside

  616. that is worth reaching.

  617. The true road

  618. lies in quite

  619. another direction.

  620. See Lewis

  621. thought quite a lot

  622. about

  623. where does

  624. the blessing lie?

  625. Right?

  626. Does it lie

  627. in that inner ring

  628. out there?

  629. And he personally

  630. found that

  631. the only inside

  632. worth reaching

  633. the only inner ring

  634. worth being a part of

  635. was entering into

  636. the power

  637. of God's blessing.

  638. Stepping into

  639. the inner ring

  640. of the Father,

  641. Son and Holy Spirit

  642. which Jesus calls

  643. eternal life

  644. or abundant life

  645. or divine life.

  646. And I just want you

  647. to know that

  648. if you don't come

  649. into the power

  650. of God's blessing

  651. and you don't let

  652. the power of God's blessing

  653. come into you,

  654. you will spend

  655. the rest of your life

  656. looking for it

  657. in inner rings

  658. that make

  659. really big claims

  660. and really big promises

  661. but can never actually

  662. give you the thing.

  663. So that's the power

  664. of God's blessing.

  665. And I want to talk

  666. for a little bit about

  667. now the dysfunction

  668. of God's family

  669. because now hopefully

  670. we see

  671. the need for

  672. this divine

  673. blessing of spiritual life

  674. and why this family

  675. was so right

  676. to desire it

  677. and to seek it

  678. but I also want us

  679. to look at all

  680. the wrong ways

  681. that they sought

  682. to give it

  683. and to receive it.

  684. And I want to walk

  685. through each family member

  686. and show you

  687. how they're all wrong

  688. though some of them

  689. are relatively less wrong

  690. than others.

  691. Okay, you tracking with me?

  692. Basically, if you want

  693. your family to be miserable,

  694. if you want our church

  695. to be miserable,

  696. be like these people.

  697. Okay?

  698. In this patriarchal context,

  699. Isaac bears the most

  700. responsibility

  701. as the leader of the family.

  702. You can quibble with that

  703. in your modern feminist ways

  704. but that's just the world

  705. that we're talking about.

  706. And he's the heir

  707. of the promises

  708. and the covenant

  709. with Abraham.

  710. And so the question is,

  711. is this old and blind man

  712. merely the victim

  713. of Rebekah's ruse

  714. and her deception

  715. or is there something

  716. more going on

  717. in the story?

  718. And also in the ancient

  719. Near East,

  720. Esau bears big time

  721. responsibility

  722. as the firstborn son

  723. and again,

  724. you might not like

  725. that structure

  726. but that's what it is.

  727. And the question is,

  728. is Esau,

  729. this manly man,

  730. this hunter dude,

  731. is he merely the victim

  732. of Jacob's lies

  733. and trickery

  734. or is there something

  735. deeper going on?

  736. And I want to say

  737. that like life,

  738. this story is way more

  739. complex than all the headlines.

  740. Because if you look

  741. at verse four,

  742. Isaac says to Esau,

  743. he says,

  744. prepare me the kind

  745. of tasty food,

  746. the kind of delicious food

  747. that I like

  748. and bring it to me to eat

  749. so that I may give you

  750. my blessing

  751. before I die.

  752. Basically,

  753. Isaac had been

  754. a man of God,

  755. he had been this person

  756. who was persistent

  757. in prayer

  758. and was known

  759. for his spirituality

  760. but at this point

  761. in his life,

  762. he's known less

  763. for his spirituality

  764. and more for his sensuality.

  765. He's controlled

  766. by his mouth,

  767. he's controlled

  768. by his stomach

  769. and somehow

  770. his appetite

  771. for meat

  772. has become more powerful

  773. than his theology.

  774. And he's become

  775. basically like Esau,

  776. if you know the story

  777. in Genesis 25,

  778. Esau sold his birthright

  779. for a pot

  780. of lentil stew.

  781. And so both Isaac

  782. and Esau

  783. surrender something

  784. that's eternally precious,

  785. something that is

  786. a precious long-term good

  787. in order to immediately

  788. satisfy their appetites.

  789. And what's more,

  790. if you look at

  791. Genesis 24 to 28,

  792. it's very clear

  793. that Abraham and Sarah

  794. went to great lengths

  795. to find Isaac

  796. a wife

  797. who shared

  798. their spiritual vision,

  799. shared their values,

  800. shared their training

  801. and their faith

  802. in the Lord.

  803. But Isaac seems

  804. to have not done that

  805. for Esau

  806. and Esau

  807. goes out

  808. and he marries

  809. a Canaanite wife,

  810. basically a wife

  811. who doesn't believe

  812. anything about

  813. the God of Israel,

  814. Yahweh,

  815. Elohim.

  816. He not only marries

  817. one Canaanite wife,

  818. he marries two

  819. Canaanite wives

  820. who basically

  821. just care

  822. nothing about God,

  823. nothing about

  824. the promises of God,

  825. the covenant of God.

  826. They don't care anything

  827. about what we read

  828. about in Genesis 18-19

  829. where it says,

  830. Abraham,

  831. you're to direct

  832. your children

  833. and your family

  834. to keep the way

  835. of the Lord

  836. by doing what is right

  837. and just.

  838. Esau doesn't care

  839. about that.

  840. These women

  841. don't care about that.

  842. And what I want us

  843. to see is that Isaac,

  844. though he started strong,

  845. he ends weak

  846. and he ends passive.

  847. And his physical blindness

  848. is a sign

  849. of his spiritual blindness.

  850. His eyes can't recognize

  851. God's leading

  852. because he should have seen

  853. that Esau

  854. was actually

  855. spiritually unsuitable,

  856. that Esau

  857. was actually

  858. an unbeliever.

  859. He despised the Lord.

  860. He despised his family.

  861. He despised his role.

  862. He despised his birthright.

  863. He held it all in contempt.

  864. He said,

  865. it's completely worthless

  866. to me.

  867. I'd rather have

  868. this pot of stew.

  869. And what's worse

  870. is that Isaac

  871. also knows

  872. this word of the Lord

  873. from Genesis 25,

    Genesis 25:23

  874. verse 23.

  875. This word that came

  876. to Rebekah

  877. where the Lord said,

  878. the older will serve

  879. the younger

  880. and my will

  881. is for the blessing

  882. to bypass

  883. the older one

  884. and for the younger one

  885. to be stronger

  886. and for the younger one

  887. to be the ruler.

  888. That God

  889. in his sovereign freedom

  890. said,

  891. I want to reverse

  892. and I want to turn

  893. upside down

  894. the norms of culture.

  895. Isaac knew that

  896. but he stubbornly

  897. resisted that clear

  898. word of the Lord

  899. and said,

  900. well that's not

  901. how I want to do it.

  902. And so like

  903. Adam and Eve

  904. in Genesis 3

  905. who loved

  906. that forbidden fruit

  907. more than they loved

  908. trusting and obeying God.

  909. And like Esau

  910. in Genesis 25

  911. who loved

  912. that pot of stew

  913. more than he loved

  914. his spiritual birthright.

  915. In this story

  916. Isaac loves barbecue

  917. more than he loves God.

  918. And the question for us

  919. is do you ever

  920. resist the Lord

  921. like this?

  922. Do you ever resist

  923. the Lord's word

  924. and his will

  925. and his way

  926. for you like this?

  927. Like Isaac and Esau

  928. do you ever put

  929. your appetite

  930. before principle?

  931. Do you ever put

  932. self-indulgence

  933. before the just thing

  934. and the right thing?

  935. Do you ever put

  936. immediate satisfaction

  937. before long-term

  938. spiritual values?

  939. Have you ever

  940. found yourself

  941. in a place

  942. where you're just

  943. unwilling to submit

  944. to the plans of God

  945. when they differ

  946. from your own desires?

  947. Isaac

  948. and his love

  949. for a comfortable life,

  950. Isaac and his love

  951. for good food

  952. has put him

  953. in this precarious place

  954. where he's

  955. not only neglecting

  956. his parental duties

  957. but he's also

  958. become spiritually

  959. indifferent

  960. to pleasing the Lord.

  961. And that's a very

  962. dangerous place to be.

  963. Just so you know,

  964. passing on the blessing

  965. was meant to be

  966. a public affair.

  967. Okay?

  968. You're supposed

  969. to call

  970. your whole community

  971. together,

  972. get your whole

  973. extended family,

  974. all your kids

  975. and your spouse

  976. and you're to have

  977. this moment.

  978. But Isaac says,

  979. no, I'm going to

  980. conspire to have

  981. this private

  982. clandestine meeting

  983. with only one son

  984. and I'm not going

  985. to share it with my wife.

  986. Now, guys,

  987. I'm still figuring

  988. some stuff out

  989. about marriage.

  990. But here's one thing

  991. I do know.

  992. Do not keep secrets

  993. from your wife.

  994. Ladies,

  995. can I get an amen

  996. on that?

  997. Okay.

  998. Now, ladies,

  999. if you see your husband

  1000. trying to thwart

  1001. God's plan

  1002. that he's given

  1003. in his word,

  1004. what should you do?

  1005. Should you dress up

  1006. your favorite child

  1007. like it's Halloween

1008. and act like a con artist?

  1009. Should you pull up

1010. a heist on your husband

  1011. through trickery

  1012. and manipulation

  1013. and deceit

  1014. and domination?

  1015. Your husband

  1016. definitely should not

  1017. be keeping secrets

  1018. from you.

  1019. He definitely

  1020. should not be favoring

  1021. your most rebellious

  1022. child

  1023. and he should not

  1024. be flat out

  1025. refusing to obey

  1026. the Lord.

1027. But what should you do?

  1028. You should go

  1029. talk to him.

  1030. You should go

  1031. have a conversation

  1032. with him.

  1033. You should go

  1034. and say,

  1035. honey,

  1036. I'd like to discuss

  1037. a spiritual matter

  1038. that's very important

  1039. to me.

  1040. And again,

  1041. I'm still figuring

  1042. some stuff out

  1043. about marriage

  1044. but here's one thing

  1045. I do know

  1046. is ladies,

  1047. your husband

  1048. cannot read

  1049. your mind.

  1050. Amen?

1051. And here's the other thing,

  1052. if he could read

  1053. your mind,

1054. he still won't get it.

  1055. You're going to have

  1056. to spell it out

  1057. for him

  1058. and then explain that

  1059. and then give

  1060. a further explanation

  1061. of that.

  1062. Like he's,

  1063. we're slow.

1064. And what I want you

  1065. to see is that

  1066. Rebecca's spiritual

  1067. values are actually

  1068. sound.

  1069. I think she's

  1070. the most sound

  1071. person spiritually

  1072. in the story.

  1073. Right?

  1074. She goes to inquire

  1075. of the Lord.

  1076. She desires

  1077. to be faithful

  1078. to God's word.

  1079. She treasures

  1080. the birthright

  1081. and the blessing.

  1082. She wants God's

  1083. will to be done.

  1084. All of those

  1085. are good and right

  1086. things.

  1087. Her spiritual values

  1088. are sound

  1089. but her methods

  1090. are deplorable.

  1091. And she goes

  1092. about trying to

  1093. pass on God's

  1094. blessing in all

  1095. the wrong ways.

  1096. as if the right

  1097. ends justify

  1098. wrong means.

  1099. And basically

  1100. instead of dropping

  1101. to her knees

  1102. in prayer

  1103. or instead of

  1104. going to her

  1105. husband and saying

  1106. can we have a

  1107. conversation?

  1108. Both of which

  1109. would have been

  1110. the faithful

  1111. and commendable

  1112. thing to do.

  1113. Rebecca says to

  1114. herself desperate

  1115. times call for

  1116. desperate measures.

  1117. And I'm going to

  1118. do a righteous

  1119. thing in a very

  1120. unrighteous way.

  1121. And so she reacts

  1122. to Isaac's

  1123. deceitful behavior

  1124. and his failure

  1125. to be the kind

  1126. of spiritually

  1127. discerning person

  1128. that he was

  1129. supposed to be.

  1130. And she launches

  1131. this counter

  1132. conspiracy

  1133. perpetuating a

  1134. more hurtful

  1135. ruse that

  1136. exploits her

  1137. husband's weaknesses

  1138. his blindness

  1139. his appetite

  1140. and Jacob

  1141. goes along

  1142. with his mom

  1143. not only deceiving

  1144. his father

  1145. but look in

  1146. verse 19

  1147. it says

  1148. Jacob said to

  1149. his father

  1150. I am Esau

  1151. your firstborn

  1152. I've done

  1153. as you told

  1154. me

  1155. please sit

  1156. up and eat

  1157. some of my

  1158. game

  1159. so that

  1160. you may

  1161. give me

  1162. your blessing

  1163. and Isaac

  1164. asked his son

  1165. how did you

  1166. find it so

  1167. quickly my son

  1168. the Lord

  1169. your God

  1170. gave me

  1171. success

  1172. he replied

  1173. you ever

  1174. have you

  1175. have

  1176. you ever done

  1177. it's a dangerous

  1178. thing to be

  1179. a spiritual

  1180. person

  1181. to use

  1182. the name

  1183. of God

  1184. to use

  1185. the things

  1186. of God

  1187. actually to

  1188. further your

  1189. own personal

  1190. interests

  1191. and my point

  1192. is this

  1193. that if you

  1194. look hard

  1195. enough into

  1196. the mirror

  1197. of Genesis

  1198. 27

  1199. and you

  1200. don't see

  1201. something of

  1202. yourself

  1203. reflected back

  1204. to you

  1205. if you

  1206. can't identify

  1207. with the

  1208. failings of

  1209. this holy

  1210. family

  1211. then you

  1212. might be as

  1213. blind as

  1214. Isaac was

  1215. blind

  1216. because at

  1217. times

  1218. we fall

  1219. as badly

  1220. as this

  1221. and I can

  1222. say that now

  1223. I couldn't say

  1224. that as a

  1225. young pastor

  1226. but I've been

  1227. a pastor

  1228. 20 years

  1229. at times

  1230. we fall

  1231. as badly

  1232. as this

  1233. and if I

  1234. had time

  1235. I'd show you

  1236. all the

  1237. spiritual

  1238. and relational

  1239. dysfunctions

  1240. that catch up

  1241. with this family

  1242. in the end

  1243. all the ways

  1244. they reap

  1245. what they sow

  1246. and they're

  1247. paying just

  1248. dearly

  1249. we'll see it

  1250. as we go

  1251. through the

  1252. story

  1253. they're experiencing

  1254. all the

  1255. consequences

  1256. of just

  1257. going against

  1258. God's moral

  1259. law

  1260. and you might

  1261. be saying

  1262. well pastor

  1263. why are you

  1264. trying so hard

  1265. to discourage

  1266. us today

  1267. and I'm

  1268. actually trying

  1269. to do

  1270. the exact

  1271. opposite

  1272. I'm trying

  1273. to encourage

  1274. you

  1275. because if

  1276. God can

  1277. bring about

  1278. salvation

  1279. in a

  1280. context

  1281. of such

  1282. unprincipled

  1283. behavior

  1284. by literally

  1285. every fallible

  1286. member of

  1287. the covenant

  1288. family

  1289. the chosen

  1290. people of

  1291. God

  1292. each one

  1293. of them

  1294. self-centeredly

  1295. seeking their

  1296. own interest

  1297. all of them

  1298. acting out

  1299. of impure

  1300. motives

  1301. and misdirected

  1302. intentions

  1303. their virtues

  1304. almost always

  1305. serving as

  1306. vices

  1307. if that's

  1308. what God

  1309. can do

  1310. here

  1311. then perhaps

  1312. in his

  1313. mercy and

  1314. grace

  1315. he can

  1316. bring about

  1317. salvation

  1318. in our

  1319. own lives

  1320. as well

  1321. right

  1322. if God

  1323. can overcome

  1324. their weaknesses

  1325. and if he

  1326. can use them

  1327. warts and all

  1328. then perhaps

  1329. he can use

  1330. me

  1331. perhaps he

  1332. can overcome

  1333. your messiness

  1334. perhaps he

  1335. can use us

  1336. as well

  1337. so that's

  1338. why I like

  1339. to end

  1340. talking about

  1341. the triumph

  1342. of God's

  1343. grace

  1344. we talked

  1345. about the

  1346. power of

  1347. God's blessing

  1348. and the

  1349. dysfunction

  1350. of God's

  1351. family

  1352. but let's

  1353. talk about

  1354. the triumph

  1355. of God's

  1356. grace

  1357. you know

  1358. what's

  1359. outrageous

  1360. in this

  1361. story

  1362. it's meant

  1363. to strike

  1364. us as

  1365. outrageous

  1366. is that

  1367. the power

  1368. of God's

  1369. blessing

  1370. is almost

  1371. squandered

  1372. it's almost

  1373. lost

  1374. because

  1375. God's people

  1376. are so

  1377. dysfunctional

  1378. that's

  1379. outrageous

  1380. and the

  1381. second thing

  1382. that's outrageous

  1383. is that

  1384. God's

  1385. intentions

  1386. to bless

  1387. his elect

  1388. God's

  1389. intentions

  1390. to bless

  1391. Jacob

  1392. are actually

  1393. forwarded by

  1394. the most

  1395. underhanded

  1396. tactics

  1397. the most

  1398. Machiavellian

  1399. manipulation

  1400. you can imagine

  1401. I don't even

  1402. know how

  1403. this is in

  1404. the Bible

  1405. it's crazy

  1406. but actually

  1407. the most

  1408. outrageous

  1409. thing of

  1410. all

  1411. is that

  1412. God

  1413. consistently

  1414. brings

  1415. his scandalous

  1416. intervening

  1417. grace

  1418. into the

  1419. lives

  1420. of people

  1421. who do

  1422. not

  1423. deserve

  1424. it

  1425. into

  1426. the

  1427. lives

  1428. of

  1429. people

  1430. who

  1431. aren't

  1432. even

  1433. really

  1434. looking

  1435. for

  1436. it

  1437. and

  1438. into

  1439. the

  1440. lives

  1441. of

  1442. people

  1443. who

  1444. are

  1445. perpetually

  1446. resisting

  1447. it

  1448. and

  1449. even

  1450. after

  1451. they've

  1452. gotten

  1453. it

  1454. they

  1455. don't

  1456. even

  1457. appreciate

  1458. it

  1459. what

  1460. this

  1461. story

  1462. tells

  1463. us

  1464. is

  1465. that

  1466. God's

  1467. grace

  1468. cannot

  1469. be

  1470. silenced

  1471. by

  1472. conflict

  1473. or

  1474. alienation

  1475. nor

  1476. can

  1477. it

  1478. be chased

  1479. away

  1480. by

  1481. exploitation

  1482. and deceit

  1483. and in

  1484. spite of

  1485. all this

  1486. family's

  1487. machinations

  1488. and mischief

  1489. the divine

  1490. purpose

  1491. stands

  1492. and

  1493. despite

  1494. all the

  1495. appalling

  1496. misdeeds

  1497. of

  1498. fallen

  1499. infallible

  1500. men and

  1501. women

  1502. like us

  1503. God's

  1504. gracious

  1505. blessing

  1506. to give

  1507. life

  1508. God's

  1509. sovereign

  1510. election

  1511. of his

  1512. people

  1513. continues

  1514. on

  1515. and his

  1516. purposes

  1517. ultimately

  1518. are fulfilled

  1519. and

  1520. this

  1521. is

  1522. one

  1523. thing

  1524. we

  1525. see

  1526. over

  1527. and

  1528. over

  1529. in

  1530. the

  1531. book

  1532. of

  1533. Genesis

  1534. is

  1535. that

  1536. this

  1537. God

  1538. of

  1539. grace

  1540. he

  1541. loves

  1542. to draw

  1543. straight

  1544. lines

  1545. with

  1546. crooked

  1547. sticks

  1548. in

  1549. Genesis

  1550. 50

  1551. the very

  1552. end

  1553. of

  1554. the

  1555. book

  1556. one

  1557. of

  1558. the

  1559. sons

  1560. of

  1561. Jacob

  1562. his

  1563. name

  1564. is

  1565. Joseph

  1566. he

  1567. says

  1568. this

  1569. he

  1570. says

  1571. what

  1572. you

  1573. intended

  1574. for

  1575. harm

  1576. and

  1577. evil

  1578. God

  1579. intended

  1580. for

  1581. good

  1582. and

  1583. the

  1584. saving

  1585. of

  1586. many

  1587. lives

  1588. if

  1589. the

  1590. kingdom

  1591. of

  1592. God

  1593. coming

  1594. into

  1595. this

  1596. world

  1597. dependent

  1598. on

  1599. us

  1600. and

  1601. our

  1602. faithfulness

  1603. it

  1604. would

  1605. never

  1606. happen

  1607. but

  1608. the

  1609. good

  1610. news

  1611. is

  1612. that

  1613. the

  1614. kingdom

  1615. of

  1616. God

  1617. is

  1618. totally

  1619. and

  1620. completely

  1621. dependent

  1622. on

  1623. God's

  1624. sovereign

  1625. grace

  1626. God's

  1627. gracious

  1628. blessing

  1629. of

  1630. life

  1631. that

  1632. overrides

  1633. all

  1634. absolutely

  1635. all

  1636. of our

  1637. miserable

  1638. failures

  1639. and so

  1640. the

  1641. question

  1642. as we

  1643. conclude

  1644. is

  1645. how

  1646. can

  1647. you

  1648. get

  1649. the

  1650. blessing

  1651. of

  1652. God's

  1653. triumphant

  1654. grace

  1655. in your

  1656. life

  1657. how

  1658. does

  1659. it

  1660. become

  1661. operative

  1662. in

  1663. your

  1664. life

  1665. well

  1666. it's

  1667. interesting

  1668. when you

  1669. turn the

  1670. gospel

  1671. of

  1672. John

  1673. Jesus

  1674. is

  1675. called

  1676. the

  1677. only

  1678. begotten

  1679. son

  1680. of

  1681. God

  1682. he's

  1683. the

  1684. eternally

  1685. beloved

  1686. son

  1687. of

  1688. the

  1689. father

  1690. who's

  1691. been

  1692. forever

  1693. in

  1694. the

  1695. state

  1696. of

  1697. living

  1698. under

  1699. the

  1700. blessing

  1701. of

  1702. the

  1703. father

  1704. and

  1705. then

  1706. you

  1707. go

  1708. to

  1709. the

  1710. end

  1711. of

  1712. the

  1713. gospel

  1714. and

  1715. it

  1716. says

  1717. that

  1718. Jesus

  1719. gave

  1720. up

  1721. that

  1722. blessing

  1723. by

  1724. taking

  1725. on

  1726. not

  1727. just

  1728. human

  1729. flesh

  1730. but

  1731. by

  1732. dying

  1733. on

  1734. the

  1735. cross

  1736. now

  1737. why

  1738. would

  1739. Jesus

  1740. give up

  1741. his

  1742. blessing

  1743. of being

  1744. the

  1745. eternally

  1746. begotten

  1747. and beloved

  1748. son

  1749. of the

  1750. father

  1751. the

  1752. answer

  1753. is

  1754. because

  1755. he

  1756. wanted

  1757. you

  1758. to

  1759. have

  1760. it

  1761. the

  1762. apostle

  1763. Paul

  1764. says

  1765. in

  1766. Galatians

  1767. 3

  1768. he says

  1769. Jesus

  1770. redeemed

  1771. us

  1772. from

  1773. the

  1774. curse

  1775. of

  1776. the

  1777. law

  1778. by

  1779. becoming

  1780. a

  1781. curse

  1782. for

  1783. us

  1784. for

  1785. it

  1786. is

  1787. written

  1788. curse

  1789. it

  1790. as

  1791. everyone

  1792. who

  1793. is

  1794. hanged

  1795. on

  1796. a

  1797. tree

  1798. and

  1799. he

  1800. took

  1801. on

  1802. that

  1803. curse

  1804. Paul

  1805. says

  1806. so

  1807. that

  1808. the

  1809. blessing

  1810. given

  1811. to

  1812. Abraham

  1813. might

  1814. come

  1815. to

  1816. us

  1817. through

  1818. Jesus

  1819. Christ

  1820. see

  1821. on

  1822. the

  1823. cross

  1824. Jesus

  1825. is

  1826. in a

  1827. way

  1828. Jesus

  1829. is

  1830. dressing

  1831. up

  1832. like

  1833. us

  1834. and

  1835. he's

  1836. getting

  1837. the

  1838. curse

  1839. that

  1840. we

  1841. deserved

  1842. so

  1843. that

  1844. when

  1845. we

  1846. believe

  1847. in

  1848. him

  1849. we

  1850. get

  1851. the

  1852. blessing

  1853. that

  1854. he

  1855. deserved

  1856. and

  1857. he

  1858. came

  1859. to

  1860. give

  1861. you

  1862. all

  1863. of

  1864. the

  1865. blessing

  1866. that's

  1867. his

  1868. all

  1869. the

  1870. blessing

  1871. all

  1872. the

  1873. inheritance

  1874. of

  1875. being

  1876. the

  1877. first

  1878. born

  1879. son

  1880. so

  1881. when

  1882. you

  1883. look

  1884. at

  1885. that

  1886. blessing

  1887. in

  1888. verse

  1889. 28

  1890. where it

  1891. says in

  1892. Genesis

  1893. 27

  1894. 28

  1895. may

  1896. God

  1897. give

  1898. you

  1899. the

  1900. of

  1901. heaven's

  1902. dew

  1903. and

  1904. of

  1905. earth's

  1906. richness

  1907. an

  1908. abundance

  1909. of

  1910. grain

  1911. and

  1912. new

  1913. wine

  1914. may

  1915. nations

  1916. serve

  1917. you

  1918. and

  1919. peoples

  1920. bow

  1921. down

  1922. to

  1923. you

  1924. be

  1925. lord

  1926. over

  1927. your

  1928. brothers

  1929. and

  1930. may

  1931. the

  1932. sons

  1933. of

  1934. your

  1935. mother

  1936. bow

  1937. down

  1938. to

  1939. you

  1940. may

  1941. those

  1942. who

  1943. curse

  1944. you

  1945. be

  1946. cursed

  1947. and

  1948. those

  1949. who

  1950. bless

  1951. you

  1952. be

  1953. blessed

  1954. surrounded

  1955. by all

  1956. of

  1957. his

  1958. loyal

  1959. and

  1960. adoring

  1961. subjects

  1962. and

  1963. so

  1964. the

  1965. question

  1966. as we

  1967. come

  1968. to

  1969. this

  1970. table

  1971. of

  1972. abundant

  1973. grain

  1974. and

  1975. new

  1976. wine

  1977. this

  1978. royal

  1979. feast

  1980. that's

  1981. set

  1982. before

  1983. us

  1984. is

  1985. Jesus

  1986. Christ

  1987. resurrected

  1988. from the

  1989. dead

  1990. is he

  1991. your

  1992. king

  1993. and

  1994. through

  1995. Jesus

  1996. have you

  1997. had

  1998. lavished

  1999. upon

  2000. you

  2001. the

  2002. love

  2003. of

  2004. God

  2005. the

  2006. father

  2007. and

  2008. in

  2009. Jesus

  2010. Christ

  2011. have

  2012. you

  2013. had

  2014. put

  2015. into

  2016. you

  2017. the

  2018. presence

  2019. and

  2020. the
