  4. Good morning. My name is August Fern, and I am a member of the Berkeley, El Cerrito, Richmond, and Kensington Community Group, but we'll have to let me know.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of John, chapter 2, verses 1 through 11, as printed in your liturgy.

    John 2:1–11

  6. A reading from the Gospel according to John.

  7. On the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.

  8. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  9. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him,

  10. They have no more wine.

  11. Woman, why do you involve me? Jesus replied.

  12. My hour has not yet come.

  13. His mother said to the servants,

  14. Do whatever he tells you.

  15. Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for a ceremonial washing, each holding from 20 to 30 gallons.

  16. Jesus said to the servants,

  17. Fill the jars with water.

  18. So they filled them to the brim.

  19. Then he told them,

  20. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.

  21. They did so.

  22. And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

  23. He did not realize where it had come from,

  24. though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

  25. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,

  26. Everyone brings out the choice wine first,

  27. and then the cheaper wine,

  28. after the guests have had too much to drink.

  29. But you have saved the best till now.

  30. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory,

  31. and his disciples believed in him.

  32. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  33. Praise to you, O Christ.

  34. Good morning.

  35. I decided to wear my wine-colored sweater today.

  36. Because it was cold and because of this text.

  37. But, you know, if you were here on Christmas Eve,

  38. we began that night looking at this gospel of John, the fourth gospel.

  39. And we looked at the prologue,

  40. which really kind of tells you everything you need to know about what's coming.

  41. And there at the very beginning of John 1,

  42. it says,

  43. In the beginning was the Word.

  44. The Word was with God.

  45. The Word was God.

  46. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

  47. No one has ever seen God,

  48. but the one and only Son who is himself God,

  49. and is in closest relationship with the Father,

  50. has made him known.

  51. And see, John, when he begins this gospel,

  52. he doesn't bury the lead.

  53. Right?

  54. He just puts it right there on the front cover,

  55. on the top of the page,

  56. the most important story,

  57. the most essential news,

  58. the most crucial information

  59. that we need to know.

  60. And basically what John is telling us there,

  61. he's saying,

  62. if you're a person who wants to know

  63. who God is,

  64. look at Jesus.

  65. And further,

  66. John says,

  67. if you're a person who wants to know

  68. who Jesus is,

  69. then follow my gospel,

  70. follow my biography of Jesus

  71. very, very closely.

  72. So we get another clue

  73. about Jesus at the end of John 1.

  74. And if you want to pick up your Bible

  75. in the pews,

  76. you can see where Jesus says

  77. at the end of John 1,

  78. he tells one of his newest disciples,

  79. a guy named Nathaniel,

  80. he says,

  81. Nathaniel,

  82. you will see heaven open,

  83. and you'll see the angels of God

  84. ascending and descending

  85. on the Son of Man.

  86. What Jesus is saying there

  87. is that to people who are watching

  88. with just even a little bit of faith,

  89. you'll see that the angels of God

  90. are actually going up

  91. and they're coming down

  92. at the place where Jesus is.

  93. Wherever Jesus is,

  94. that's where heaven is opening up.

  95. He says that there are going to be

  96. all these moments of

  97. when the transforming power

  98. of God's love

  99. bursts into the world

  100. where it's as if heaven

  101. will be coming down

  102. upon the earth.

  103. And this wedding in Cana

  104. is such a moment, right,

  105. where the Word of God

  106. made flesh shows up,

  107. where He's present,

  108. and wherever He goes,

  109. He brings with Him

  110. a different dimension of reality.

  111. He brings that into being.

  112. He creates new possibilities

  113. for people to enjoy

  114. the abundant life

  115. that comes through Him.

  116. And so that's what we're going to look at

  117. with this text today.

  118. We're going to talk about

  119. the Lord of the Feast,

  120. and then we're going to talk about

  121. the hour to come,

  122. and we'll close by talking about

  123. the foretaste of joy.

  124. So the Lord of the Feast,

  125. the hour to come,

  126. and the foretaste of joy.

  127. But first of all,

  128. the Lord of the Feast.

  129. When we look at this text

  130. starting in verse 1,

  131. it says,

  132. On the third day,

  133. a wedding took place

  134. at Cana in Galilee,

  135. and Jesus' mother was there,

  136. and Jesus and His disciples

  137. had also been invited

  138. to the wedding.

  139. This Cana is a Jewish,

  140. little Jewish village.

  141. It's about eight miles northeast

  142. of Jesus' hometown of Nazareth.

  143. So this is the hometown,

  144. Cana is the hometown of Nathanael,

  145. the latest disciple

  146. that Jesus has just called

  147. at the end of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  148. and the bride and groom

  149. of this wedding

  150. are part of Nathanael's

  151. extended community,

  152. and it seems that

  153. Jesus' mother

  154. is probably friends

  155. with the parents

  156. of the bride and the groom,

  157. which is why she's so involved

  158. in this story.

  159. It's just eight miles away

  160. from where she lives.

  161. And it's important

  162. to remember that,

  163. you know,

  164. in ancient cultures

  165. cultures,

  166. and in traditional cultures

  167. today,

  168. they emphasize the family,

  169. they emphasize the community

  170. over the individual

  171. so that, you know,

  172. your meaning in life

  173. is not so much found

  174. in your individual achievements,

  175. the meaning in life

  176. is found in being

  177. a good husband

  178. and a good wife,

  179. being a good son

  180. and daughter,

  181. being a good mother

  182. and father.

  183. And the purpose of marriage

  184. is not so much

  185. the happiness

  186. of the two individuals

  187. involved in this event,

  188. but the purpose of marriage

  189. is to bind

  190. the whole community together,

  191. is to raise up

  192. the next generation together.

  193. And that meant

  194. that weddings

  195. were quite different

  196. than the kind of weddings

  197. that we go to today

  198. because each wedding

  199. was a public feast

  200. for the entire town,

  201. right?

  202. Because marriage

  203. was about the whole community

  204. and not just merely

  205. this couple.

  206. But it did involve

  207. the couple, okay?

  208. The couple had to be there.

  209. And this was

  210. the biggest event

  211. in their personal life,

  212. the personal life

  213. of the bride and groom.

  214. This is the day

  215. when they come of age.

  216. This is the day

  217. when they become

  218. full adult members

  219. of society.

  220. And so it's really

  221. no surprise

  222. that with these

  223. ancient wedding feasts,

  224. I mean,

  225. they didn't just have a day.

  226. They had a week, right?

  227. It lasted a whole week long

  228. worth of celebration.

  229. And when you think

  230. about that context,

  231. when you think about

  232. that background,

  233. our text opens abruptly

  234. on a great crisis,

  235. right?

  236. A massive disaster

  237. because we assume

  238. that there may be

  239. one or two days

  240. into this wedding festival

  241. and the wine runs out.

  242. Which essentially means

  243. that the party

  244. is over.

  245. And

  246. in an honor-shame culture

  247. particularly,

  248. this is a disaster, right?

  249. This is a catastrophe.

  250. And that's why

  251. the mother of Jesus

  252. comes to him

  253. and wants him

  254. to step in,

  255. wants him to intervene

  256. and to save the situation.

  257. And so it says

  258. in verse 3,

  259. when the wine was gone,

  260. Jesus' mother said to him,

  261. they have no more wine.

  262. And then if you look down

  263. in verse 11,

  264. it says,

  265. what Jesus did here

  266. in Cana of Galilee

  267. was the first of the signs

  268. through which

  269. he revealed his glory

  270. and his disciples

  271. put their faith

  272. in him.

  273. And this is the key

  274. to understanding

  275. this whole text.

  276. Right?

  277. It's not called

  278. merely a miracle.

  279. It's called a sign.

  280. And a sign

  281. is a symbol.

  282. A sign is a signifier.

  283. A sign points

  284. to something

  285. beyond itself.

  286. Every day

  287. we look at signs.

  288. Signs that say,

  289. get on here.

  290. Get off there.

  291. Go into this place.

  292. Go over there

  293. to that place.

  294. This signpost

  295. at this wedding

  296. in Cana

  297. reveals

  298. the glory

  299. of Jesus.

  300. Right?

  301. It's this special

  302. display of his power

  303. that's pointing us

  304. to a deeper reality.

  305. It's pointing us

  306. and saying,

  307. this is Jesus'

  308. true identity.

  309. This is who he is.

  310. This is why he came.

  311. And we've got to remember

  312. that this is the beginning

  313. of Jesus' career.

  314. Right?

  315. It's the beginning

  316. of his public ministry.

  317. And so,

  318. if you're a candidate

  319. for public political office

  320. or if you are an entrepreneur

  321. and you're wanting

  322. to launch your brand,

  323. you know,

  324. if you're a musician

  325. who's releasing

  326. a major recording,

  327. you are going to choose

  328. your first public presentation

  329. with enormous care.

  330. Some of you have done this.

  331. Right?

  332. Every detail

  333. that you say,

  334. every detail

  335. about what you do,

  336. it needs to convey

  337. the message

  338. of who you are

  339. and why you're here,

  340. what you offer.

  341. Think about

  342. Jesus

  343. and his calling card.

  344. Think about

  345. the brand

  346. that Jesus is launching.

  347. Why would Jesus

  348. decide to signify

  349. that the main thing

  350. that he's all about

  351. is throwing

  352. a good party?

  353. Why?

  354. The first of all

  355. the miracles

  356. he could have done,

  357. why would this sign

  358. that reveals

  359. the glory

  360. of who he is,

  361. why would he decide

  362. to bring a supernatural

  363. supply

  364. of not just

  365. quantity wine

  366. but quality wine

  367. that will sustain

  368. a wedding feast?

  369. Why would he do that?

  370. I mean,

  371. does Jesus not

  372. read the newspaper?

  373. Is he not aware

  374. of all the major threats

  375. and crises

  376. and dangers

  377. that are facing

  378. the human race?

  379. Why in the world

  380. would Jesus decide

  381. not to do something

  382. here about

  383. disease?

  384. Why isn't he doing

  385. something right now

  386. about hunger

  387. or poverty

  388. or the climate

  389. or

  390. death itself?

  391. War?

  392. All these

  393. problems that we have.

  394. When you look at

  395. verse 9,

  396. it says

  397. that we're introduced

  398. to this guy

  399. who's called

  400. the master

  401. of the banquet

  402. and he's having

  403. a very bad day

  404. by the way

  405. because he's in charge

  406. of making sure

  407. that all the elements

  408. of the celebration,

  409. the food,

  410. the drink,

  411. the music,

  412. the entertainment,

  413. that all of these things

  414. are ready to go

  415. and to keep going.

  416. His job

  417. is to make the party

  418. a wonderful celebration.

  419. And so when Jesus comes

  420. and he turns

  421. the water

  422. into wine

  423. that brings salvation

  424. to this wedding feast,

  425. don't you see

  426. what Jesus is saying?

  427. He's saying,

  428. I'm the true master

  429. of the banquet.

  430. I'm the real

  431. Lord of the feast.

  432. And if you know

  433. your Bible,

  434. you might say,

  435. well, wait a minute,

  436. I thought Jesus came

  437. to be

  438. the word of God

  439. made flesh.

  440. I thought he came

  441. to humble himself,

  442. to take on our sin

  443. and our suffering

  444. and our sorrow.

  445. I thought he came

  446. to be rejected

  447. and to go to the cross

  448. and all these

  449. really hard things

  450. and sad things.

  451. And that's right,

  452. but Jesus in this sign

  453. is putting all of that

  454. terrible humiliation

  455. and all of that awful pain

  456. into a larger

  457. and much more wonderful context.

  458. He's saying,

  459. yes, I'm going to deny myself

  460. and yes, I'm going to suffer.

  461. Yes, I'm going to sacrificially

  462. give my life

  463. and all of my followers

  464. will give something

  465. of themselves as well.

  466. But all that is

  467. just a means

  468. to a greater end.

  469. And the end

  470. is the banquet.

  471. Right?

  472. The end is the feast.

  473. The end is the wine.

  474. The end is the joy.

  475. That all of the humiliation

  476. and all the pain

  477. that I'm going to go through

  478. and that my people

  479. are going to go through

  480. is in order

  481. to bring about resurrection.

  482. In order to bring about

  483. new creation.

  484. Where heaven and earth

  485. finally come together.

  486. where they intersect

  487. and they overlap.

  488. And in that moment,

  489. I'm going to wipe away

  490. all the tears

  491. from your eyes.

  492. Right?

  493. In that moment,

  494. there's going to be

  495. no more crying.

  496. No more pain.

  497. No more tears.

  498. There's going to be

  499. no more disease

  500. and hunger

  501. and war

  502. and poverty

  503. and death.

  504. Right?

  505. The old order of things

  506. is going to pass away.

  507. The new order,

  508. the new creation

  509. is going to come

  510. and when it comes,

  511. it will bring about a joy

  512. that will absolutely overflow

  513. and explode your heart.

  514. You see,

  515. Jesus has read his Bible

  516. very closely

  517. leading up to this moment

  518. and he treasures

  519. God's word,

  520. particularly

  521. those places

  522. in the Bible

  523. that talk about

  524. this eternal feast

  525. of joy

  526. when the Messiah comes.

  527. And I'll just give you

  528. a few examples.

  529. This is from

  530. Genesis 29.

  531. First book in the Bible

  532. and it says,

  533. the scepter will not

  534. depart from Judah

  535. nor the ruler's staff

  536. from between his feet

  537. until he to whom

  538. it belongs

  539. shall come

  540. and the obedience

  541. of the nation

  542. shall be his

  543. and get this,

  544. it says,

  545. he will tether

  546. his donkey to a vine,

  547. his colt to the choicest branch

  548. and then it says,

  549. he will wash his garments

  550. in wine

  551. and his robes

  552. in the blood

  553. of grapes.

  554. What does it mean

  555. if you're washing

  556. your garments

  557. not in water

  558. but in wine?

  559. What does that mean?

  560. That is a sign

  561. of extreme abundance.

  562. Extreme riches

  563. and wealth

  564. and prosperity

  565. and blessing, right?

  566. I didn't wash

  567. my clothes in water,

  568. I washed them in wine.

  569. Amos chapter 9

    Amos 9 chapter mention

  570. says this,

  571. it says,

  572. the days are coming

  573. declares the Lord

  574. when the reaper

  575. will be overtaken

  576. by the plowman

  577. and the planter

  578. by the one

  579. treading grapes

  580. and it says,

  581. new wine

  582. will drip

  583. from the mountains

  584. and wine

  585. will flow

  586. from all the hills.

  587. There will be rivers

  588. of wine

  589. when the Messiah comes.

  590. This is my favorite,

  591. Isaiah 20, 25

  592. says this,

  593. it says,

  594. on this mountain

  595. the Lord Almighty

  596. will prepare

  597. a feast

  598. of rich food

  599. for all peoples,

  600. a banquet

  601. of aged wine,

  602. the best

  603. of meats

  604. and the finest

  605. of wines.

  606. It's hard to capture

  607. that in English

  608. but here it kind of

  609. sounds,

  610. it rhymes

  611. in Hebrew.

  612. It sounds like

  613. a feast of filet,

  614. a banquet

  615. of cabernet.

  616. Filet mignon,

  617. cabernet sauvignon.

  618. Right?

  619. That's what it sounds

  620. kind of like in Hebrew.

  621. It says,

  622. there will be such a feast

  623. that the Lord Almighty

  624. will prepare

  625. for His people

  626. that on this mountain

  627. at that feast

  628. He will destroy

  629. the shroud

  630. that enfolds

  631. all the peoples,

  632. the sheet

  633. that covers

  634. all the nations.

  635. He will swallow up

  636. death forever

  637. and the sovereign Lord

  638. will wipe away

  639. the tears

  640. from all their eyes.

  641. and He will remove

  642. the people's disgrace

  643. from all the earth.

  644. And Isaiah says,

  645. let us rejoice

  646. and be glad

  647. in this salvation.

  648. Do you see

  649. what Jesus

  650. is doing?

  651. Chez panie

  652. and French laundry

  653. cannot hold

  654. a candle

  655. to the coming

  656. Messianic feast

  657. because it has

  658. to do

  659. with the

  660. wiping away

  661. of the tears

  662. from our faces.

  663. It has to do

  664. with the destruction

  665. of death itself.

  666. It has to do

  667. with the ridding

  668. of our disgrace

  669. and the salvation

  670. of joy

  671. and gladness

  672. that only the Lord

  673. Almighty

  674. can accomplish.

  675. Jesus is saying

  676. that those who believe

  677. in Me

  678. can have within them

  679. this transporting joy.

  680. Right?

  681. They can have within them

  682. a deep heart fulfillment

  683. moment that

  684. is not only

  685. for later

  686. it's for right now.

  687. That if you

  688. trust in Me

  689. a stream of joy

  690. a river

  691. of wine

  692. will flow

  693. within your heart.

  694. At the end

  695. of The Lord of the Rings

  696. Samwise Gamgee

  697. !

  698. wakes up

  699. and he

  700. realizes

  701. he's been rescued

  702. from the fires

  703. of Mount Doom

  704. and he sees

  705. that Gandalf

  706. is somehow alive

  707. and he says

  708. Gandalf

  709. I thought you were dead

  710. but then I thought

  711. I was dead

  712. and then he says

  713. is everything sad

  714. going to come

  715. untrue?

  716. And what Jesus

  717. is saying

  718. is that

  719. if I'm the master

  720. of the banquet

  721. who stepped out

  722. of eternity

  723. and into time

  724. if I'm the Lord

  725. of the feast

  726. who's come down

  727. from heaven

  728. to earth

  729. if I've come

  730. to defeat

  731. sin and death

  732. if I've come

  733. to be resurrected

  734. and to launch

  735. a new creation

  736. then

  737. you can be sure

  738. that everything sad

  739. is going to come

  740. untrue.

  741. You can be sure

  742. that everything wrong

  743. is going to be put right.

  744. You can be sure

  745. that

  746. the wine

  747. is going to flow

  748. without ever

  749. coming to an end.

  750. Dostoevsky

  751. put it like this.

  752. I know a few of you

  753. are reading

  754. or would like to read

  755. the Brothers Karamazov.

  756. Dostoevsky says

  757. I believe like a child

  758. that suffering

  759. will be healed

  760. and made up for

  761. that all the humiliating

  762. absurdity

  763. of human contradictions

  764. will vanish

  765. like a pitiful mirage

  766. like the despicable

  767. fabrication

  768. of the impotent

  769. and infinitely small

  770. Euclidean mind

  771. of man

  772. that in the world's finale

  773. at the moment

  774. of eternal harmony

  775. something so precious

  776. will come to pass

  777. that it will suffice

  778. for all hearts

  779. for the comforting

  780. of all resentments

  781. for the atonement

  782. of all the crimes

  783. of humanity

  784. for all the blood

  785. that they've shed

  786. that it will make it

  787. not only possible

  788. to forgive

  789. but to justify

  790. all that has happened.

  791. I want to encourage

  792. us not to sentimentalize

  793. this wedding

  794. at Cana

  795. to think that

  796. Jesus has just come

  797. to save this family

  798. from social shame

  799. or to think that

  800. he's just come

  801. to make this little

  802. Jewish community

  803. happy for a few more days

  804. of wedding celebrations

  805. because what Jesus

  806. is saying

  807. is that I am

  808. the Lord

  809. of the feast

  810. that's my calling card

  811. that is my brand

  812. my first sign

  813. to reveal

  814. my glory

  815. is that I've come

  816. to bring joy

  817. to the whole world

  818. and I've come

  819. to take this

  820. sad and miserable world

  821. and set everybody

  822. laughing again

  823. that's what I've come

  824. to do

  825. so that's point number one

  826. the Lord of the feast

  827. point number two

  828. is the hour to come

  829. the hour to come

  830. you know

  831. Jesus adorns

  832. the institution

  833. of marriage

  834. with his presence

  835. with his action

  836. at this wedding

  837. as if to say

  838. and I think he's

  839. very intentional

  840. in doing what he did

  841. where he did it

  842. as if to say

  843. that the creator

  844. God's original design

  845. and direction

  846. for male-female

  847. relationships

  848. and for families

  849. at the beginning

  850. is very very good

  851. Jesus is going

  852. to go on

  853. and he's going

  854. to elevate

  855. our vision

  856. of marriage

  857. and our vision

  858. of singleness

  859. in the kingdom

  860. of God

  861. but the main point

  862. of our text

  863. is not so much

  864. about our marriages

  865. in our extended families

  866. the main point

  867. of our text

  868. is about the marriage

  869. covenant

  870. between God

  871. and his people

  872. throughout the Old Testament

  873. we hear about

  874. God as the bridegroom

  875. and his people

  876. as the bride

  877. that God is such

  878. that he wants

  879. a love relationship

  880. with us

  881. like a husband

  882. and a wife

  883. have with each other

  884. he wants that profound

  885. permanent union

  886. and intimacy

  887. and joy

  888. of bride and groom

  889. and this is why

  890. when Jesus comes

  891. he refers to himself

  892. over and over

  893. as the bridegroom

  894. he says in Matthew 22

  895. the kingdom of heaven

  896. is like a king

  897. who prepared a wedding

  898. banquet for his son

  899. the apostles

  900. pick this up

  901. in Ephesians 5

  902. Paul talks about

  903. Jesus being the husband

  904. who gives himself up

  905. for his bride

  906. the church

  907. and the very end

  908. of the Bible

  909. carries this image

  910. all the way

  911. to the end

  912. it says there's going

  913. to be a great

  914. heavenly wedding feast

  915. that's prepared

  916. at the end of time

  917. it's called

  918. the marriage supper

  919. of the lamb

  920. and it says

  921. that the people

  922. of God

  923. will be like a bride

  924. that's dressed

  925. for her husband

  926. and the question

  927. when you look

  928. at that whole

  929. arc of scripture

  930. the question is

  931. how will that be

  932. like how will that

  933. happen

  934. how will Jesus

  935. come

  936. and bring about

  937. the wedding

  938. of God

  939. and humanity

  940. how will he bring

  941. about the marriage

  942. of union

  943. and intimacy

  944. and joy

  945. between God

  946. and his people

  947. and that's what

  948. brings us to this

  949. tense and somewhat

  950. awkward conversation

  951. that Jesus has

  952. with his mother

  953. because she comes

  954. and she tells Jesus

  955. she says the wine

  956. has run out

  957. and Jesus says

  958. woman why do you

  959. involve me

  960. and that seems

  961. a little strange

  962. right

  963. it seems kind of

  964. cold

  965. and insensitive

  966. like the fifth

  967. commandment

  968. of the ten commandments

  969. is honor your mother

  970. honor your father

  971. and I went

  972. and I looked

  973. for like more

  974. nuanced and softer

  975. translations of this

  976. and I couldn't

  977. find any

  978. they all basically

  979. say the same thing

  980. but we know

  981. that in the gospels

  982. Jesus is not

  983. easily irritated

  984. right

  985. we know that

  986. he never says

  987. things that he regrets

  988. and has to come back

  989. and say I'm sorry

  990. for that

  991. we know that even

  992. when he was tortured

  993. he didn't say harsh

  994. and angry words

  995. so what in the world

  996. is going on here

  997. well something

  998. something's weighing

  999. heavily upon Jesus

  1000. at this wedding

1001. it says in verse 4

  1002. woman why do you

  1003. involve me

  1004. Jesus replied

  1005. my hour has not

  1006. yet come

  1007. and if you read

  1008. the gospel of John

  1009. closely

  1010. Jesus refers to this

  1011. hour many times

  1012. and every time

  1013. he's speaking about

  1014. the coming hour

  1015. of his death

  1016. right

  1017. his hour

  1018. is the moment

  1019. of his death

  1020. on the cross

  1021. now how does this

  1022. make any sense

  1023. his mother Mary

  1024. says help

  1025. there's a disaster

  1026. they've run out of

  1027. wine

  1028. and Jesus says

1029. why are you telling me

  1030. this

  1031. I'm not ready

1032. for my hour of death

1033. I'm not ready to die

  1034. and it just seems

  1035. like a non sequitur

  1036. what is Jesus

  1037. thinking at this moment

  1038. what he's thinking

  1039. is I'm about

  1040. to perform

  1041. a powerful sign

  1042. of what I've come

  1043. to do

  1044. and what is needed

  1045. what is needed

  1046. to turn the misery

  1047. and the sadness

  1048. of this world

  1049. into joy

  1050. what is needed

  1051. to bring

  1052. God

  1053. and his people

  1054. together

  1055. like bride

  1056. and groom

  1057. what is going

  1058. to have to happen

  1059. for that to transpire

  1060. and Jesus is thinking

  1061. it's the coming hour

  1062. of my death

  1063. and we don't know

  1064. how much Mary

  1065. understood this

  1066. in the moment

  1067. but she understood

  1068. enough to say

  1069. in verse 5

  1070. she tells the servants

  1071. do whatever

  1072. he tells you

  1073. I know enough

  1074. to say

  1075. do whatever

  1076. Jesus tells you

  1077. to do next

  1078. and it says

  1079. in verse 6

  1080. nearby stood

  1081. six stone water jars

  1082. the kind used

  1083. by the Jews

  1084. for ceremonial washing

  1085. each holding

  1086. from 20 to 30 gallons

  1087. and Jesus said

  1088. to the servants

  1089. fill the jars

  1090. with water

  1091. so they filled

  1092. them to the brim

  1093. and then he told

  1094. them now draw out

  1095. some and take it

  1096. to the master

  1097. of the banquet

  1098. why would Jesus

  1099. create new wine

  1100. in jars

  1101. that are used

  1102. by Israel

  1103. for ceremonial washing

  1104. why use jars

  1105. for ceremonial cleansing

  1106. and purification

1107. is this a total accident

  1108. is this complete coincidence

  1109. no what Jesus

  1110. is communicating here

  1111. is that

  1112. what the hour

  1113. of my death

  1114. is all about

  1115. is the kind

  1116. of washing

  1117. that will make

  1118. possible

  1119. the union

  1120. of God

  1121. and his people

  1122. in intimacy

  1123. and love

  1124. and joy

  1125. and if you know

  1126. your Old Testament

  1127. like Jesus did

  1128. you know it contains

  1129. many many rights

  1130. and regulations

  1131. of purification

  1132. that

  1133. what was required

  1134. were many

  1135. and various courses

  1136. of cleansing

  1137. that point

  1138. us to our

  1139. most basic

  1140. spiritual need

  1141. right

  1142. these washings

  1143. vividly got across

  1144. the idea

  1145. that God

  1146. is holy

  1147. God is righteous

  1148. God is perfect

  1149. that we

  1150. are stained

  1151. we're polluted

  1152. we're deeply

  1153. flawed

  1154. and that

  1155. in order to even

  1156. come in contact

  1157. with him

  1158. much less

  1159. become his spouse

  1160. become his bride

  1161. there needs to be

  1162. some kind of

  1163. cleansing

  1164. some kind

  1165. of purification

  1166. right

  1167. some kind

  1168. of atonement

  1169. and pardon

  1170. we cannot

  1171. just

  1172. walk right

  1173. into the presence

  1174. of a holy

  1175. God

  1176. as we are

  1177. and so Israel

  1178. had these many

  1179. purification rights

  1180. that led up

  1181. to their blood

  1182. sacrifices

  1183. and that's what

  1184. these jars

  1185. are normally

  1186. used for

  1187. and by

  1188. employing

  1189. these jars

  1190. that are used

  1191. for ceremonial

  1192. washing

  1193. Jesus is saying

  1194. that he's come

  1195. into the world

  1196. to accomplish

  1197. in the hour

  1198. of his death

  1199. once and for all

  1200. what all the

  1201. ceremonial

  1202. and sacrificial

  1203. laws of the

  1204. Old Testament

  1205. are pointing to

  1206. that we can't

  1207. really understand

  1208. the wedding

  1209. feast of

  1210. marital union

  1211. and intimacy

  1212. and joy

  1213. with God

  1214. that Jesus

  1215. came to bring

  1216. without the hour

  1217. of his death

  1218. and the way

  1219. that his death

  1220. was to deal

  1221. with our sin

  1222. you see

  1223. instead of

  1224. Jesus telling us

  1225. that sin

  1226. doesn't really

  1227. exist

  1228. and you're all

  1229. pretty much

  1230. okay the way

  1231. you are

  1232. Jesus

  1233. in his entire

  1234. ministry

  1235. his entire

  1236. teaching

  1237. he's telling us

  1238. you're defiled

  1239. by sin

  1240. you need to be

  1241. rescued and

  1242. purified

  1243. from sin

  1244. and there's

  1245. this interesting

  1246. statement at the

  1247. end of

  1248. John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  1249. he says

  1250. it says

  1251. many people

  1252. believed in his

  1253. name but Jesus

  1254. would not entrust

  1255. himself to them

  1256. for he knew

  1257. what was in

  1258. them

  1259. what does

  1260. Jesus know

  1261. about what's

  1262. in us

  1263. what is in

  1264. us

  1265. it's this

  1266. capacity for

  1267. self-centeredness

  1268. it's in all

  1269. that we think

  1270. and all that we

  1271. say and all that

  1272. we do

  1273. to serve

  1274. ourselves

  1275. it's this dark

  1276. power that causes

  1277. us to love

  1278. ourselves more

  1279. than we love

  1280. God

  1281. to love

  1282. ourselves

  1283. more than

  1284. we love

  1285. our neighbor

  1286. and the

  1287. consequence

  1288. of all that

  1289. is that we

  1290. are alienated

  1291. from God

  1292. and we're

  1293. enslaved to

  1294. ourselves

  1295. and we're

  1296. in conflict

  1297. with each

  1298. other

  1299. and so when

  1300. Jesus says

  1301. to his mother

  1302. my hour

  1303. has not yet

  1304. come

  1305. he's saying

  1306. he's saying

  1307. woman

  1308. I can bring

  1309. the wine

  1310. I can bring

  1311. the joy

  1312. of the great

  1313. wedding feast

  1314. to this world

  1315. and I can unite

  1316. God as the

  1317. bridegroom

  1318. with his people

  1319. as the bride

  1320. in a relationship

  1321. of loyal love

  1322. I can cleanse

  1323. them from their

  1324. sin and their

  1325. selfishness

  1326. and their guilt

  1327. and their shame

  1328. but oh dear

  1329. woman

  1330. I'm going to

  1331. have to die

  1332. to do it

  1333. he says

  1334. mother

  1335. for my

  1336. people to

  1337. drink the

  1338. cup of

  1339. wedded love

  1340. and marital

  1341. joy

  1342. with God

  1343. I'm going to

  1344. have to drink

  1345. the cup

  1346. of their

  1347. sin and

  1348. their death

  1349. how does

  1350. Jesus bring

  1351. us joy

  1352. by losing

  1353. his joy

  1354. by going

  1355. to the cross

  1356. and dying

  1357. in our

  1358. place

  1359. friends

  1360. Jesus

  1361. at this

  1362. moment

  1363. of great

  1364. joy

  1365. in the

  1366. midst

  1367. of a

  1368. wedding

  1369. feast

  1370. he's

  1371. thinking

  1372. about

  1373. his

  1374. death

  1375. which means

  1376. that he's

  1377. thinking about

  1378. his death

  1379. all the

  1380. time

  1381. every

  1382. moment

  1383. of every

  1384. day

  1385. Jesus

  1386. has not

  1387. come

  1388. to be

  1389. a good

  1390. teacher

  1391. or a

  1392. moral

  1393. exemplar

  1394. or a

  1395. social

  1396. reformer

  1397. he came

  1398. to die

  1399. he came

  1400. he came

  1401. for the

  1402. hour

  1403. of his

  1404. death

  1405. to shed

  1406. his blood

  1407. to take

  1408. that cup

  1409. of God's

  1410. justice

  1411. and his

  1412. punishment

  1413. so that we

  1414. could raise

  1415. the cup

  1416. of God's

  1417. love

  1418. and God's

  1419. joy

  1420. it's the

  1421. greatest love

  1422. story ever

  1423. told

  1424. the bridegroom

  1425. came

  1426. to win the

  1427. heart

  1428. of his

  1429. bride

  1430. by giving

  1431. his life

  1432. up for

  1433. her

  1434. and every

  1435. love story

  1436. that you

  1437. enjoy

  1438. it's just

  1439. a hint

  1440. it's a whisper

  1441. it's a sign

  1442. post

  1443. to this

  1444. love story

  1445. and the

  1446. hour

  1447. that Jesus

  1448. knows

  1449. is coming

  1450. to win

  1451. the love

  1452. of his

  1453. bride

  1454. so we

  1455. talked about

  1456. the Lord

  1457. of the

  1458. feast

  1459. we talked

  1460. about the

  1461. hour to

  1462. come

  1463. and I

  1464. want to

  1465. just close

  1466. briefly

  1467. talking about

  1468. the foretaste

  1469. of joy

  1470. the foretaste

  1471. of joy

  1472. our text

  1473. says that

  1474. the wine

  1475. is gone

  1476. the wine

  1477. ran out

  1478. the wine

  1479. was no

  1480. more

  1481. and that's

  1482. the one

  1483. thing that you

  1484. can be sure

  1485. about in this

  1486. life that

  1487. no matter how

  1488. secure you

  1489. feel

  1490. no matter how

  1491. healthy you

  1492. are

  1493. no matter how

  1494. much wealth

  1495. you've accumulated

  1496. no matter the

  1497. successes you've

  1498. had

  1499. no matter the

  1500. relationships

  1501. that you

  1502. enjoy

  1503. the wine

  1504. will eventually

  1505. run out

  1506. every joy

  1507. will be

  1508. gone

  1509. every celebration

  1510. will come

  1511. to an end

  1512. it will not

  1513. last just as

  1514. the wine

  1515. at this

  1516. wedding

  1517. failed

  1518. but the

  1519. message of the

  1520. gospel is that

  1521. with Jesus

  1522. there's a

  1523. different

  1524. reality

  1525. he says

  1526. they filled

  1527. the jars

  1528. to the

  1529. brim

  1530. this is

  1531. 180

  1532. gallons

  1533. which is

  1534. about

  1535. a thousand

  1536. bottles

  1537. of wine

  1538. that is a

  1539. ridiculous

  1540. amount

  1541. of wine

  1542. that's way

  1543. more wine

  1544. than they

  1545. were going

  1546. to drink

  1547. that's way

  1548. more wine

  1549. than they

  1550. needed

  1551. and it

  1552. indicates

  1553. to us

  1554. the overflowing

  1555. nature

  1556. of God's

  1557. generosity

  1558. toward us

  1559. the inexhaustible

  1560. bounty

  1561. and the

  1562. abundant

  1563. life

  1564. that Jesus

  1565. wants

  1566. to pour

  1567. out on his

  1568. people

  1569. for us

  1570. to enjoy

  1571. if we'll

  1572. just trust

  1573. and obey

  1574. that he

  1575. can do

  1576. it

  1577. and we

  1578. notice in

  1579. the story

  1580. that the

  1581. majority

  1582. of the

  1583. guests

  1584. they're

  1585. clueless

  1586. the guests

  1587. are here

  1588. they're enjoying

  1589. the best

  1590. wine

  1591. that they've

  1592. ever had

  1593. the best

  1594. wine

  1595. that they

  1596. could ever

  1597. imagine

  1598. drinking

  1599. but they

  1600. have no

  1601. idea

  1602. where it's

  1603. come from

  1604. they don't

  1605. even know

  1606. who to

  1607. thank

  1608. only the

  1609. servants

  1610. who obeyed

  1611. the command

  1612. of Jesus

  1613. only the

  1614. disciples

  1615. they're the

  1616. only ones

  1617. who know

  1618. the secret

  1619. and it says

  1620. in verse

  1621. 11

  1622. that through

  1623. the sign

  1624. Jesus

  1625. revealed

  1626. his glory

  1627. and his

  1628. disciples

  1629. put their

  1630. faith

  1631. in him

  1632. that's the

  1633. pattern

  1634. the disciples

  1635. behold the

  1636. sign

  1637. and they

  1638. believe in

  1639. Jesus

  1640. this is the

  1641. invitation

  1642. and the

  1643. challenge

  1644. to all

  1645. who would

  1646. read this

  1647. gospel

  1648. behold the

  1649. signs of

  1650. Jesus

  1651. believe in

  1652. the person

  1653. of Jesus

  1654. pay attention

  1655. to the

  1656. wonderful

  1657. works of

  1658. Jesus

  1659. and then

  1660. put the

  1661. full weight

  1662. of your

  1663. trust

  1664. on

  1665. Jesus

  1666. and it

  1667. poses

  1668. this

  1669. question

  1670. to us

  1671. as we

  1672. close

  1673. are you

  1674. a wedding

  1675. guest

  1676. who does

  1677. not know

  1678. the glory

  1679. of Jesus

  1680. and does

  1681. not believe

  1682. in Jesus

  1683. or are you

  1684. a servant

  1685. and a

  1686. disciple

  1687. who wholeheartedly

  1688. entrusts

  1689. yourself

  1690. to Jesus

  1691. and if you

  1692. consider yourself

  1693. a disciple

  1694. I want to

  1695. encourage you

  1696. as we

  1697. close to

  1698. think about

  1699. the wine

  1700. of holy

  1701. communion

  1702. for a

  1703. moment

  1704. this table

  1705. we're about

  1706. to come

  1707. to

  1708. Jesus

  1709. the one

  1710. thing he

  1711. gave us

  1712. to keep

  1713. remembering

  1714. him by

  1715. is this

  1716. feast

  1717. where we're

  1718. to keep

  1719. coming to

  1720. him

  1721. our living

  1722. Lord

  1723. we're

  1724. to keep

  1725. taking the

  1726. blood

  1727. of the

  1728. true

  1729. vine

  1730. we're

  1731. to keep

  1732. drinking

  1733. the wine

  1734. of his

  1735. joy

  1736. we're

  1737. to keep

  1738. abiding

  1739. in him

  1740. whose

  1741. blood

  1742. of the

  1743. new

  1744. covenant

  1745. he

  1746. poured

  1747. out

  1748. to give

  1749. life

  1750. to the

  1751. whole

  1752. world

  1753. and as

  1754. we come

  1755. to this

  1756. feast

  1757. we've

  1758. got to

  1759. remember

  1760. that

  1761. in the

  1762. midst

  1763. of the

  1764. joy

  1765. of that

  1766. that

  1767. wedding

  1768. feast

  1769. in Cana

  1770. right

  1771. when

  1772. everybody

  1773. is

  1774. enjoying

  1775. themselves

  1776. while

  1777. everybody's

  1778. having

  1779. the best

  1780. wine

  1781. of their

  1782. life

  1783. Jesus

  1784. in that

  1785. moment

  1786. he's

  1787. tasting

  1788. the coming

  1789. hour

  1790. of his

  1791. death

  1792. that lays

  1793. before him

  1794. but we

  1795. don't have

  1796. to do

  1797. that

  1798. right

  1799. Jesus

  1800. sat

  1801. amidst

  1802. all

  1803. the

  1804. joy

  1805. of that

  1806. wedding

  1807. feast

  1808. and he

  1809. was

  1810. sipping

  1811. the

  1812. coming

  1813. sorrow

  1814. so that

  1815. today

  1816. you and

  1817. I

  1818. who

  1819. believe

  1820. in

  1821. Jesus

  1822. we

  1823. can

  1824. sit

  1825. amidst

  1826. all

  1827. the

  1828. world's

  1829. sorrow

  1830. and there's

  1831. so much

  1832. sorrow

  1833. but we

  1834. can be

  1835. sipping

  1836. the

  1837. coming

  1838. joy

  1839. every

  1840. time we

  1841. come to

  1842. the

  1843. Lord's

  1844. supper

  1845. by faith

  1846. we get

  1847. a foretaste

  1848. of that

  1849. coming

  1850. feast

  1851. and that

  1852. coming

  1853. joy

  1854. so that

  1855. even

  1856. those of

  1857. us

  1858. who

  1859. right

  1860. now

  1861. are in

  1862. the

  1863. midst

  1864. of

  1865. some

  1866. deep

  1867. sorrow

  1868. some

  1869. terrible

  1870. suffering

  1871. you can

  1872. come to

  1873. Jesus

  1874. and you

  1875. can sip

  1876. the wine

  1877. of the joy

  1878. that's coming

  1879. for you

  1880. and if you

  1881. know that

  1882. if that's

  1883. the thing

  1884. that you

  1885. possess

  1886. today

  1887. that will

  1888. enable you

  1889. to go

  1890. out

  1891. and put

  1892. into

  1893. practice

  1894. these

  1895. very

  1896. simple

  1897. words

  1898. of

  1899. Jesus

  1900. mother

  1901. when she

  1902. says

  1903. in

  1904. verse

  1905. five

  1906. do

  1907. whatever

  1908. he

  1909. tells

  1910. you

  1911. to

  1912. do

  1913. and

  1914. that's

  1915. the

  1916. question

  1917. as we

  1918. come

  1919. to

  1920. this

  1921. feast

  1922. is the

  1923. attitude

  1924. and the

  1925. heart

  1926. by which

  1927. you

  1928. approach

  1929. the

  1930. Lord

  1931. at

  1932. his

  1933. table

  1934. are

  1935. you

  1936. saying

  1937. to

  1938. Jesus

  1939. I'm

  1940. listening

  1941. to

  1942. everything

  1943. you're

  1944. telling

  1945. me

  1946. everything

  1947. you're

  1948. saying

  1949. in

  1950. your

  1951. word

  1952. I'm

  1953. listening

  1954. and

  1955. whatever

  1956. you

  1957. tell

  1958. me

  1959. to

  1960. do

  1961. that's

  1962. what

  1963. I

  1964. want

  1965. to

  1966. do

  1967. right

  1968. your

  1969. wish

  1970. is

  1971. my

  1972. command

  1973. I'm

  1974. going

  1975. to

  1976. trust

  1977. you

  1978. I'm

  1979. going

  1980. to

  1981. obey

  1982. you

  1983. whatever

  1984. you

  1985. tell

  1986. me

  1987. to

  1988. do

  1989. is

  1990. that

  1991. how

  1992. you

  1993. come

  1994. to

  1995. this

  1996. table

  1997. because

  1998. that's

  1999. the

  2000. faith

  2001. that

  2002. Jesus

  2003. requires

  2004. of

  2005. his

  2006. disciples

  2007. the

  2008. servants

  2009. show

  2010. us

  2011. that

  2012. it's

  2013. only

  2014. through

  2015. trusting

  2016. !

  2017. obedience

  2018. in

  2019. the

  2020. Lord

  2021. that

  2022. we

  2023. will

  2024. actually

  2025. experience

  2026. his

  2027. power

  2028. the

  2029. only

  2030. way

  2031. we

  2032. can

  2033. really

  2034. experience

  2035. his

  2036. mysterious

  2037. wonder

  2038. working

  2039. power

  2040. in

  2041. our

  2042. lives

  2043. is

  2044. not

  2045. just

  2046. to

  2047. hear

  2048. the

  2049. word

  2050. of

  2051. Jesus

  2052. but

  2053. to

  2054. obey

  2055. Jesus

  2056. fill

  2057. the

  2058. jars

  2059. draw

  2060. some

  2061. out

  2062. take

  2063. it

  2064. to

  2065. the

  2066. party

  2067. they've

  2068. got to

  2069. obey

  2070. him

  2071. in

  2072. all

  2073. the

  2074. particulars

  2075. and

  2076. all

  2077. the

  2078. details

  2079. and

  2080. it's

  2081. only

  2082. when we

  2083. step

  2084. out

  2085. in

  2086. faith

  2087. and we

  2088. obey

  2089. Jesus

  2090. in

  2091. the

  2092. particulars

  2093. and in

  2094. the

  2095. details

  2096. that he

  2097. will

  2098. enable us

  2099. to

  2100. experience

  2101. firsthand

  2102. a different

  2103. dimension

  2104. of reality

  2105. but you

  2106. have to

  2107. step out

  2108. in

  2109. faith

  2110. you have

  2111. to

  2112. obey

  2113. if you

  2114. want to

  2115. experience

  2116. all the

  2117. new

  2118. possibilities

  2119. of
