  4. This is John chapter 6. Don't worry, we're not reading all 71 verses of this chapter.

    John 6 chapter mention

  5. Let's start in verse 25.

  6. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, Rabbi, when did you get here?

  7. Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

  8. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.

  9. Which the Son of Man will give you.

  10. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

  11. Then they asked him, What must we do to do the works God requires?

  12. Jesus answered, The work of God is this, to believe in the one he has sent.

  13. So they asked him, What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you?

  14. What will you do?

  15. Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  16. Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

  17. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

  18. Sir, they said, always give us this bread.

  19. Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life.

  20. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

  21. But as I told you, you have seen me, and still you do not believe.

  22. Verse 41.

  23. At this the Jews there began to grumble about him, because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  24. They said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?

  25. How can he now say, I came down from heaven?

  26. Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered.

  27. Verse 46.

  28. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God.

  29. Only he has seen the Father.

  30. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.

  31. I am the bread of life.

  32. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.

  33. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.

  34. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  35. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

  36. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

  37. Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, how can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  38. Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

  39. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

  40. For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink.

  41. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.

  42. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

  43. This is the bread that came down from heaven.

  44. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.

  45. Verse 60.

  46. On hearing it, many of his disciples said, This is a hard teaching.

  47. Who can accept it?

  48. Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, Does this offend you?

  49. Verse 66.

  50. From this time, many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

  51. You do not want to leave too, do you?

  52. Jesus asked the twelve.

  53. Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?

  54. You have the words of eternal life.

  55. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.

  56. I think many of us, when we come to this passage about the bread of life, we think it's pretty straightforward.

  57. And it is.

  58. Jesus is like bread.

  59. We need him to live.

  60. That's the Christian message.

  61. We all know that if we've been in the church for a little bit even.

  62. You're not wrong.

  63. But what I hope to show you this morning is that there are levels to this.

  64. All right?

  65. And I wonder if the message we really need to hear this morning from Jesus is not simply, I am the bread of life.

  66. But I wonder if it's a question he has to ask us.

  67. And the question is, what are you truly hungry for?

  68. And are you really willing to eat my flesh and drink my blood?

  69. So what I want us to consider this morning, what are you really hungry for?

  70. And are you really down to eat Jesus' flesh and to drink his blood?

  71. So to walk through this text, I have five Ps, all right?

  72. Five points.

  73. Don't worry, kids.

  74. Five Ps.

  75. They're this, if you're taking notes.

  76. The principle, the problem, the provision, the predicament, and the person.

  77. The principle, the problem, the provision, the predicament, and the person.

  78. So first, the principle.

  79. And the principle is this.

  80. We all need bread.

  81. Hunger is real.

  82. So to appreciate what Jesus means here when he's saying, I am the bread of life, let me give you some context.

  83. If you look at the very beginning of our passage in verses 1 through 15, verse 4 says it's now the Jewish Passover.

  84. And yet instead of flocking to Jerusalem, what do we find?

  85. A bunch of people, a huge crowd, has gone out into the wilderness, into the mountainside, to a remote place to follow Jesus.

  86. And it says they followed him because he was healing people, like left and right, demonstrating amazing signs of the power of God.

  87. And then out here in the wilderness, not only does he heal, but he feeds like 5,000 men, probably more.

  88. This is, you know, 5,000 households, probably, 10, 15, 20, 25,000 people out here.

  89. And he feeds them by distributing somehow and multiplying five loaves and two fish.

  90. We all know that story.

  91. It's the most, it's one of the most famous stories of Jesus, right?

  92. It's the one of the only, it's the only miracle that is in all four Gospels.

  93. And, you know, Jesus' resurrection had, what, 500 witnesses?

  94. But here we have 20, 25,000 witnesses, and we're still telling this story, right, about this Messiah who didn't just come to teach about how to save your soul,

  95. but who healed and nourished people's bodies too.

  96. So this is the context.

  97. Jesus has just fed the 5,000 with bread in abundance because he made these people and he knows the principle.

  98. He created and established this principle that we all need bread.

  99. He knows that.

  100. Our God knows that we all need bread.

  101. From the very beginning of God's story, we were created to consume, not to be consumeristic, but still to consume for our nourishment and for our life.

  102. God gave us trees and fruit, and he set us up to explore and enjoy his creation.

  103. He designed our minds to creatively turn wheat into loaves, right?

  104. And our nostrils to inhale the aroma of fresh baked bread.

  105. Our tongues to taste the tartness of Andy Brown's wonderful sourdough goodness, right?

  106. Our jaws to appreciate the spongy, chewy character of his sourdough bread that we enjoy here at this table.

  107. See, from the beginning, we were created with natural hungers meant to be supernaturally satisfied by our maker and sustainer.

  108. Eating was one of the many ways we were meant to relate with God, our creator.

  109. So the problem was never hunger or our need for bread.

  110. But here's the second P.

  111. The problem is that we sought and trusted bread that spoils.

  112. Even though we were made to hunger for food and made to enjoy daily bread from the hand of our maker and sustainer,

  113. when in our eating we chose rebellion against God instead of relationship with God,

  114. when we hungered after that which we were never meant to consume,

  115. when we took our lives into our own hands and we took our lives out of God's,

  116. that's when everything went wrong.

  117. And our natural hunger became a nagging hunger.

  118. However, the principle remained we all need bread and we all need to eat, we all need to live.

  119. But what changed was that we put ourselves at odds with the divine supplier of our daily bread.

  120. Creation was cursed with thorns and thistles.

  121. Abundant supply devolved to abhorrent scarcity.

  122. Satiation got exchanged for starvation.

  123. And all of a sudden, bread required sweat and toil.

  124. And even that bread, that wasn't the bread of life.

  125. That was bread that merely delayed death.

  126. And this wasn't just food insecurity, but in all of life insecurity that entered into our world,

  127. into our minds, our psyches, human life stopped being about loving God and enjoying Him forever.

  128. Stopped being about loving one another as ourselves.

  129. And it became a futile competition.

  130. Who can accumulate the most bread?

  131. Who can delay death the longest?

  132. And not just bread, but who can accumulate the most stuff?

  133. Ever since the fall, we've lived by the myth of more.

  134. If I just had more, then I could live longer, better, stronger.

  135. But no matter how much we've accumulated, it's never been enough.

  136. Every few years, you know, I have to quote Rockefeller.

  137. He was, you know, the wealthiest man in modern history.

  138. Who, when he was asked, how much money is enough?

  139. What did he say?

  140. Just a little bit more.

  141. See, we are insatiable.

  142. We always need more.

  143. More money, more time, more control, more security, more approval, more accomplishment.

  144. Take a survey of your own life.

  145. What is the bread you are chasing right now?

  146. What is the more that you're seeking that you believe will save you from the scarcity that most frightens you?

  147. Or maybe I could ask it this way.

  148. What are you most anxious about?

  149. See, our anxieties reveal the bread we seek.

  150. Follow your worry, and it will almost always show you what your functional God, what your functional Savior is.

  151. Losing or never having wealth, family, career, significant others, reputation.

  152. What is the more that we all seek?

  153. And ask yourselves, if you did get it, would it satisfy?

  154. That the myth of more is the devil's lie that having more will somehow save us, liberate us, unlock our everlasting joy.

  155. And this is the world, this is the lie that Jesus came to speak truth into.

  156. All the tens of thousands that he fed here on this mountainside, they believed this lie that more bread, more fish, more healing would save them.

  157. And they wanted a Messiah who would give them more of the things that they thought would bring them life.

  158. Verse 15 says they even attempted to force him into being their king.

  159. Isn't that such a contradiction, though?

  160. What kind of authority would a forced king even have?

  161. Really, what they wanted was a genie, not an actual king.

  162. Jesus, in their eyes, was only a means to an end, a means to the bread they thought that they needed.

  163. And Jesus calls them out on this in verse 26.

  164. He says,

  165. Provision.

  166. The provision is Jesus himself.

  167. Jesus is the bread of heaven.

  168. He says, I am the bread of life, right?

  169. Verse 27.

  170. Unless we read verse 27 with like Jesus, with an angry, frustrated, condescending face, let's try to read him with a compassionate, even like a pleading tone.

  171. Verse 27.

  172. Do not work for food that spoils.

  173. But for food that endures.

  174. But for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

  175. For on him, God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

  176. He's saying, guys, it's free.

  177. I can give you better bread, better than FDA approved.

  178. It's straight from heaven, approved by God himself.

  179. And it's free.

  180. But when Jesus says, do not work for food that spoils.

  181. Look, all they hear are the words work and food.

  182. Verse 28.

  183. What must we do to do the works God requires?

  184. That's their whole paradigm.

  185. And it's ours too most of the time, isn't it?

  186. No work, no food.

  187. No sweat, no bread.

  188. No struggle, no supper.

  189. Food, sustenance, life itself, they must be earned, right?

  190. They must be earned rather than graciously received.

  191. But see, Jesus, he came to turn that notion completely upside down.

  192. Verse 29.

  193. No.

  194. The work of God is this.

  195. To believe.

  196. To believe in the one he has sent.

  197. Not to toil, but to trust.

  198. Now, unfortunately, Jesus' simple invitation is met with skeptical inquiry.

  199. Why should we trust you?

  200. Verse 30.

  201. What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you?

  202. What will you do?

  203. Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness.

  204. As it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  205. So they're saying like, sure, you took a little boy's cheap barley loaves

  206. and fed thousands, tens of thousands for an afternoon.

  207. But Moses fed hundreds of thousands with bread from heaven for over 40 years.

  208. If we're going to trust you, you have to at least match that.

  209. You have to outdo Moses, bro.

  210. Verse 32.

  211. Jesus says to them,

  212. Very truly, I tell you,

  213. it's not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven,

  214. but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

  215. Jesus is saying, wait, hold up.

  216. You thought that Moses fed you in the wilderness?

  217. Bro, no, he says to them back, right?

  218. The one who fed you in the wilderness is the same one who fed you out of the five loaves and two fish.

  219. It's always been my Father.

  220. It's always been God himself.

  221. And he sent me.

  222. He sent me because, get this,

  223. he wants to give you even better bread from heaven,

  224. something way better than that manna.

  225. So they're like, okay, verse 34.

  226. Sir, always give us this bread.

  227. And Jesus says, verse 35,

  228. I am the bread of life.

  229. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.

  230. Basically, he says here,

  231. you want manna again?

  232. You want a new sign from heaven?

  233. You want a greater miracle,

  234. something to satisfy you?

  235. I am that.

  236. I am the bread of life.

  237. I am straight from heaven.

  238. I am the miracle.

  239. I am the greatest possible proof of God's power and presence and love right in front of you.

  240. I am all of that.

  241. And yet, just like Israel in the wilderness,

  242. even after receiving their manna,

  243. here in verse 41,

  244. they grumble.

  245. At this, the Jews there began to grumble about him

  246. because he said,

  247. I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  248. And they grumble in unbelief.

  249. We know where you came from, Jesus.

  250. We know your parents.

  251. You couldn't possibly have come from God in heaven.

  252. And in response, Jesus doesn't try to convince them.

  253. He doesn't.

  254. But basically tells them that they are blind and distant from God.

  255. Verse 44,

  256. no one can come to me unless the Father draws them.

  257. And he just reiterates,

  258. either believe me or don't.

  259. Verse 47,

  260. very truly, I tell you,

  261. the one who believes has eternal life.

  262. I am the bread of life.

  263. And look, he doesn't try to prove it to them

  264. according to their own standards,

  265. according to their own demands.

  266. And by the way,

  267. if you are a Christian

  268. and you sometimes wonder,

  269. how can I convince people about Jesus?

  270. What is the best evidence,

  271. the best argument to prove

  272. that Christianity is true?

  273. If you're here today

  274. and you're not convinced about Jesus

  275. or about Christianity

  276. because you're waiting for some airtight,

  277. watertight, bulletproof syllogism,

  278. I want you to see here

  279. that while there are strong evidences and arguments,

  280. Jesus doesn't exist

  281. to satisfy our rationalistic demands, no.

  282. But he does come

  283. to challenge our prior commitments.

  284. There's this theologian and apologist,

  285. his name is Cornelius Van Til.

  286. He trained and influenced a lot of the professors

  287. that me and Jonathan sat under in seminary,

  288. even though Jonathan's a lot older than me, still.

  289. But he liked to talk about this method, Van Til,

  290. this method that we see Jesus using here.

  291. And what he called it was

  292. pointing out the impossibility of the contrary.

  293. He said, when you engage in apologetics,

  294. you don't have to like stack

  295. those building blocks of evidence.

  296. Why don't you just point out

  297. the impossibility of the contrary?

  298. Like Jesus, again, he's not trying to

  299. set up all these rational building blocks,

  300. trusting that people with darkened hearts

  301. will eventually climb and put those blocks together

  302. and see the light.

  303. No, he goes straight after the darkness

  304. that they're committed to.

  305. He goes straight after the foolish things

  306. that they trust as gods and saviors.

  307. So look at how he doesn't try to convince them

  308. that he's the bread of life from heaven,

  309. but rather he tries to show them

  310. the impossibility of their contrary bread.

  311. He sets up a contrast.

  312. Verse 49, your ancestors ate the manna

  313. in the wilderness, yet they died.

  314. You still want that kind of bread?

  315. You still think Moses was so great?

  316. Verse 50, but here is the bread

  317. that comes down from heaven,

  318. which anyone may eat and not die.

  319. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

  320. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

  321. And with this, Jesus confronts all of us.

  322. He confronts the whole world.

  323. He confronts us with the sad truth

  324. that we are all people who work and toil

  325. and devote our lives to acquiring spoiling bread

  326. that can never keep us alive.

  327. Even manna, the most miraculous bread

  328. that Israel had ever seen straight from heaven,

  329. even manna still led to the grave.

  330. And how much more are modern bread,

  331. whatever that is, your career,

  332. your family, health, beauty, power,

  333. influence, reputation, relationships,

  334. retirement plans,

  335. all good gifts,

  336. but all terrible gods.

  337. All of it.

  338. In the end, bread that spoils.

  339. And we all know it.

  340. And we're exhausted by our pursuits,

  341. and yet we still go after that spoiling bread

  342. by any means necessary.

  343. We battle for bread that rots.

  344. We cheat for it.

  345. We cut corners for it.

  346. We neglect people for it.

  347. Worse, we shed blood for it.

  348. We step on, we step over people for it.

  349. Every Christ you see in the news,

  350. is it not connected to greed

  351. and a sense of scarcity and insecurity?

  352. Can it all be reduced?

  353. It's the people trying to secure

  354. their own bread and life

  355. for as long as possible,

  356. even at the expense of others

  357. and with zero regard for the glory of God.

  358. And don't you see how these pursuits

  359. after bread that spoils,

  360. how it makes us slaves

  361. and murderers and oppressors

  362. and the worst versions of ourselves.

  363. Even if you're succeeding in life,

  364. so successful,

  365. maybe you're at Davos,

  366. maybe you're speaking at the World Economic

  367. Economic Forum,

  368. you may still be starving your soul

  369. and the lives and souls

  370. of your neighbors.

  371. So you see, Jesus,

  372. he came to disrupt that system,

  373. to turn the empires of this world

  374. upside down

  375. and to establish his better kingdom,

  376. not based on our merit,

  377. but based on his merit

  378. and on his mercy.

  379. You don't have to climb,

  380. he says.

  381. I am the bread of life,

  382. come down from heaven,

  383. given for you.

  384. I am everything you need.

  385. I am God,

  386. and I am God with you,

  387. he says.

  388. You know,

  389. if you turn back with me

  390. to the beginning of John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  391. I love the image here

  392. of him feeding the 5,000.

  393. It's not just Jesus,

  394. the true and better Moses,

  395. feeding people in the wilderness,

  396. but look,

  397. he's also Jesus,

  398. the true and better shepherd.

  399. He's the good shepherd

  400. and they shall not want.

  401. Look at how he makes them

  402. lie down in green pastures

  403. in verse 10.

  404. Look at verse 11,

  405. how he gives thanks

  406. and prepares a table before them.

  407. Look at verses 11, 12, and 13

  408. and how their cups

  409. and their baskets overflow,

  410. all for free.

  411. He turns scarcity into abundance,

  412. five loaves and two fish

  413. into a feast

  414. for tens of thousands.

  415. And what I love too about this

  416. is how he gives thanks.

  417. Like, picture him.

  418. There are 25,000 hungry

  419. and hurting people

  420. in front of him.

  421. And all that they have

  422. is five loaves

  423. and two fish.

  424. And still,

  425. he takes these five loaves

  426. and two fish

  427. in front of 25,000 people

  428. and with gratitude,

  429. he offers thanks to God.

  430. in front of them.

  431. No complaint about the scarcity.

  432. No complaint about these

  433. measly little loaves and fish.

  434. It's almost like a joke.

  435. And that he is not at all

  436. fazed by the scarcity,

  437. but he lifts them up

  438. in thanks to his Father.

  439. And after he had blessed the bread

  440. and given thanks,

  441. he broke it

  442. and somehow

  443. everyone

  444. everyone

  445. is satisfied.

  446. Do you realize

  447. what a provider,

  448. what a provision

  449. we have in this man,

  450. in this God?

  451. He is the bread of life.

  452. He is everything

  453. we need

  454. and more.

  455. He is our sustenance.

  456. He is our portion.

  457. And he doesn't ask

  458. anything of us

  459. but faith,

  460. belief,

  461. trust,

  462. dependence.

  463. That's what it means

  464. to feed on Christ.

  465. To trust him

  466. wholly

  467. and solely

  468. that

  469. and that alone

  470. is the work

  471. that God requires of us

  472. and that's the gospel.

  473. That we get to choose

  474. prayer over panic,

  475. surrender over striving.

  476. But now this leads us

  477. to the fourth P,

  478. the predicament.

  479. He is the provision.

  480. He is the bread from heaven.

  481. He is the bread of life.

  482. But this bread is,

  483. it's an offensive bread.

  484. Sometimes it doesn't taste

  485. that good.

  486. Because Jesus doesn't

  487. just stop at

  488. depend on me

  489. like I'm the bread

  490. you need from heaven.

  491. He gets,

  492. he gets quite provocative here.

  493. Even offensive.

  494. Verse 51.

  495. This bread is my flesh

  496. which I will give

  497. for the life

  498. of the world.

  499. Wait,

  500. what?

  501. They ask,

  502. verse 52,

  503. how can this man

  504. give us his flesh

  505. to eat?

  506. And Jesus just doubles down.

  507. Very truly I tell you,

  508. unless you eat

  509. the flesh of the Son of Man

  510. and drink his blood.

  511. You have no life in you.

  512. Whoever eats my flesh

  513. and drinks my blood

  514. has eternal life

  515. and I will raise them up

  516. at the last day.

  517. For my flesh is real food

  518. and my blood is real drink.

  519. Whoever eats my flesh

  520. and drinks my blood

  521. remains in me

  522. and I in them.

  523. Just as the living Father

  524. sent me

  525. and I live because of the Father,

  526. so the one who feeds on me

  527. will live because of me.

  528. This is the bread

  529. that came down from heaven.

  530. Your ancestors ate manna

  531. and died,

  532. but whoever feeds

  533. on this bread

  534. will live forever.

  535. Wow.

  536. Did he say it enough?

  537. His flesh is our bread.

  538. His blood is our drink.

  539. Jesus refuses to back down.

  540. He doesn't soften

  541. any of these blows.

  542. He doesn't even bother

  543. to explain himself

  544. like in more concrete terms.

  545. This is what makes

  546. the Gospel of John

  547. really hard for me

  548. as a preacher.

  549. And while it's unclear

  550. exactly what his listeners

  551. would have understood

  552. him to be saying,

  553. and I doubt they thought

  554. he was literally calling them

  555. to be cannibals,

  556. all right?

  557. I think they're,

  558. let's give them more credit

  559. than that.

  560. But what is clear

  561. is that this guy

  562. is claiming to be from heaven.

  563. He's claiming to be

  564. the Son of God,

  565. perhaps even God Himself.

  566. He's claiming that

  567. the only way to life

  568. is to depend on Him

  569. as the bread of life

  570. and in fact,

  571. somehow,

  572. they must so depend on Him

  573. that they eat His flesh

  574. and drink His blood.

  575. And so on a bunch of levels,

  576. this is incredibly provocative.

  577. Like, first of all,

  578. it's just kind of confusing.

  579. What does this guy even mean?

  580. Why is he talking to us like this?

  581. Secondly,

  582. for those who do understand

  583. the basics,

  584. it's like,

  585. trust in you,

  586. Jesus of Nazareth,

  587. like you're God,

  588. like you're the only way

  589. to eternal life?

  590. Come on, man.

  591. We know your parents.

  592. And you think

  593. you're actually better

  594. than Moses,

  595. our liberator,

  596. the great liberator

  597. of our whole nation?

  598. We don't want you

  599. as the bread of life.

  600. We want that manna

  601. to come down again.

  602. And now you're just talking

  603. crazy, dude,

  604. about us eating your flesh

  605. and drinking your blood.

  606. I don't even want to stick around

  607. to find out what you mean

  608. by that.

  609. I'm out.

  610. And many of His early adopters

  611. and the outer ring

  612. of His disciples,

  613. they leave.

  614. Verse 60,

  615. On hearing it,

  616. many of His disciples said,

  617. this is a hard teaching.

  618. Who can accept it?

  619. Again, more grumbling,

  620. aware that His disciples

  621. were grumbling about this.

  622. Jesus said to them,

  623. does this offend you?

  624. Verse 66,

  625. From this time,

  626. many of His disciples

  627. turned back

  628. and no longer followed Him.

  629. It was just too much.

  630. It was too hard,

  631. too confusing,

  632. too offensive.

  633. And honestly,

  634. it was even more offensive

  635. than they even realized.

  636. When Jesus was saying,

  637. you must eat my flesh

  638. and drink my blood,

  639. only the later readers

  640. of John's Gospel,

  641. only the early church

  642. would know

  643. what Jesus meant.

  644. He wasn't giving them

  645. a riddle,

  646. but a reality.

  647. The reality that we are

  648. so broken and so starved

  649. and so sinful

  650. that a body had to be broken,

  651. flesh had to be torn,

  652. blood had to be shed

  653. in order to atone

  654. for our sins.

  655. We took our lives

  656. out of God's hands,

  657. threw them away.

  658. So justice demanded

  659. that God receive

  660. a pure life back.

  661. And the only one available

  662. was the life of His Son,

  663. who took on humanity.

  664. The I am became

  665. I am bread,

  666. bread sent from heaven

  667. to be broken and torn

  668. for the life of the world.

  669. And really this,

  670. this is the offense

  671. of Jesus' words here.

  672. The meaning that His deserters

  673. didn't even stick around

  674. to understand,

  675. this is the offense.

  676. Not that Jesus is cryptic,

  677. but that Jesus is Lord,

  678. which means that we are not.

  679. I am not.

  680. You are not.

  681. And worse yet,

  682. that we are more sinful

  683. than we could ever imagine.

  684. So sinful that only the death

  685. of the Son of God

  686. could remedy our sins.

  687. It's incredibly offensive.

  688. Like someone offering you

  689. like weight loss pills

  690. and a gym membership,

  691. alright?

  692. Think about how offensive

  693. that would be.

  694. But you know,

  695. that's what you need

  696. to be healthy.

  697. Even if it means

  698. that you have to face

  699. the truth of your obesity,

  700. shouldn't we be thankful

  701. and glad

  702. to receive such an offer?

  703. This is the message

  704. of Christianity.

  705. That your main problem

  706. is sin.

  707. And you need

  708. a Savior.

  709. The thing is,

  710. many of us aren't convinced

  711. that we need

  712. a Savior.

  713. We don't realize

  714. how far short we fall

  715. and how heinous

  716. it is

  717. that we have not

  718. loved the Lord our God

  719. with all our heart,

  720. soul, mind, and strength

  721. and that we have not

  722. loved our neighbors

  723. as ourselves.

  724. We might be willing

  725. to admit need

  726. for a helper,

  727. but not a Savior.

  728. Maybe to have some

  729. minor home improvements,

  730. but not a full-blown,

  731. complete renovation.

  732. We like the idea

  733. of free bread,

  734. free healings,

  735. life enhancement,

  736. but we don't like

  737. the idea that we are

  738. prodigals who have

  739. squandered everything

  740. and whose only hope now

  741. is a rescue mission

  742. that only God Himself

  743. can accomplish.

  744. See, Jesus,

  745. He refuses to be useful

  746. without also being

  747. your Lord,

  748. your soul,

  749. one and only God

  750. and Savior.

  751. No one else

  752. will do.

  753. So if you want

  754. a Jesus who never

  755. offends you,

  756. never disagrees with you,

  757. if you want

  758. a Savior who only

  759. and always affirms

  760. and agrees with you,

  761. maybe you do just

  762. prefer being a slave,

  763. striving for your own

  764. self-salvation.

  765. Because see,

  766. that's the only other

  767. alternative to Jesus.

  768. Either He saves us,

  769. or we have to save

  770. ourselves,

  771. or we have to find

  772. someone else who could

  773. and would possibly

  774. love us and be strong

  775. enough to do so.

  776. And this brings me

  777. to my final P,

  778. the preeminent person.

  779. So Jesus turns

  780. from the crowds

  781. who have left,

  782. and He looks right

  783. into the eyes

  784. of His remaining twelve,

  785. one of whom He knows

  786. will betray Him.

  787. Verse 67,

  788. you do not want

  789. to leave too,

  790. do you?

  791. Just sit in that moment.

  792. You do not want

  793. to leave too,

  794. do you?

  795. After the crowd

  796. has shrunk

  797. from 25,000

  798. to a dozen,

  799. and after everything

  800. He said so provocative,

  801. so confusing,

  802. so offensive.

  803. But notice Jesus' question.

  804. It's not,

  805. do you understand it all?

  806. It's not,

  807. do you have

  808. all your questions answered?

  809. It's simpler,

  810. it's deeper,

  811. it's,

  812. are you going

  813. to stay with me?

  814. And you know,

  815. we like to roll

  816. our eyes at Peter,

  817. but what he says

  818. might be the most

  819. profound thing

  820. any apostle

  821. has ever said.

  822. Lord,

  823. to whom else

  824. shall we go?

  825. That's the impossibility

  826. of the contrary.

  827. Peter isn't claiming

  828. he's figured Jesus out,

  829. he's not saying,

  830. yeah, Jesus,

  831. that flesh and blood thing,

  832. I'm so down.

  833. No,

  834. he's saying,

  835. even when I don't

  836. fully understand you,

  837. I also,

  838. I can't deny you.

  839. I don't have

  840. a flawless proof,

  841. but I think I've found

  842. a flawless person.

  843. You alone

  844. have the words

  845. of eternal life,

  846. and we have come

  847. to believe

  848. and to know

  849. that you are

  850. the holy one

  851. of God.

  852. Holy,

  853. set apart,

  854. unique,

  855. one of a kind.

  856. There is no one like you

  857. is what Peter's saying.

  858. But you know

  859. what's sobering?

  860. When Peter says that,

  861. Judas is standing

  862. right there too.

  863. Same crowd,

  864. same sermon,

  865. same miracle,

  866. same Jesus.

  867. One disciple saying,

  868. where else could I

  869. possibly go?

  870. Another disciple

  871. is already beginning

  872. to think,

  873. where else could I go?

  874. One sees Jesus

  875. as the bread of life,

  876. the other sees Jesus

  877. as a means to an end.

  878. One clings to Jesus,

  879. the other keeps

  880. a little bag of silver

  881. nearby just in case

  882. a better offer

  883. comes along.

  884. See,

  885. the difference

  886. between Peter

  887. and Judas

  888. isn't exposure

  889. to Jesus.

  890. It's what they

  891. ultimately want

  892. from Jesus.

  893. Peter wants Jesus.

  894. Judas wants

  895. what Jesus

  896. can provide.

  897. And that question

  898. just quietly

  899. hangs in the air

  900. for every single

  901. one of us.

  902. Are we here

  903. because Jesus

  904. is useful

  905. or because Jesus

  906. is Lord?

  907. Are we staying

  908. because He gives bread,

  909. because we get free lunch

  910. after service

  911. on first Sundays

  912. or because He's Lord?

  913. Are we staying

  914. because He gives bread

  915. or because He is the bread?

  916. These are the only two options,

  917. the way of Peter,

  918. the way of Judas.

  919. And one gets to have breakfast

  920. with the risen Messiah

  921. filled with the Holy Spirit

  922. as a fruitful servant

  923. of the kingdom

  924. at the end of his story

  925. and another

  926. is simply holding a bag

  927. of 30 pieces of silver

  928. that at the end

  929. He doesn't even want anymore

  930. and He is hopeless

  931. and He realizes

  932. how worthless

  933. that trade was

  934. and He cannot face Himself

  935. or the world anymore.

  936. You know,

  937. I think Jesus

  938. is asking

  939. some of us this morning

  940. not first of all

  941. like do you understand everything?

  942. What if He's just asking you

  943. will you stay?

  944. Will you linger?

  945. Will you stick around?

  946. And like sure,

  947. you can walk away

  948. but please think carefully

  949. about where else you'll go

  950. because no one walks away

  951. to neutral ground.

  952. If Jesus is not your bread,

  953. you'll still need bread.

  954. If Jesus is not your Savior,

  955. you still need a Savior.

  956. If Jesus is not your Lord,

  957. something else will be.

  958. So again,

  959. to whom else shall we go?

  960. Who's your better option?

  961. There's this 19th century

  962. Scottish minister.

  963. I love these words

  964. that he wrote about Jesus.

  965. His name was John Watson.

  966. He said,

  967. No one has yet discovered

  968. the word Jesus

  969. ought to have said.

  970. None suggested

  971. the better word

  972. He might have said.

  973. No action of His

  974. has shocked

  975. our moral sense.

  976. None has fallen short

  977. of the ideal.

  978. He is full of surprises

  979. but they are all surprises

  980. of perfection.

  981. You were never amazed

  982. one day by His greatness,

  983. the next by His littleness.

  984. You were quite amazed

  985. that He is incomparably better

  986. than you could have expected.

  987. He is tender

  988. without being weak,

  989. strong without being coarse,

  990. lowly without being servile.

  991. He has conviction

  992. without intolerance,

  993. enthusiasm without fanaticism,

  994. holiness without pharisaism,

  995. passion without prejudice.

  996. This man alone

  997. never made a false step,

  998. never struck a jarring note.

  999. His life alone,

1000. it was life at its highest.

1001. Where else are you going

1002. to find something like this?

  1003. Someone like this,

  1004. a God who doesn't demand

1005. your blood but gives His own.

1006. The I Am who became bread,

  1007. bread from heaven

1008. to be broken for you.

  1009. See, this is where

  1010. eat my flesh

  1011. and drink my blood,

  1012. those words are transformed

1013. from gory to glory, right?

  1014. This isn't about cannibalism,

  1015. it's about communion

  1016. with the living God,

1017. crucified and risen for us

  1018. in Christ.

  1019. This isn't try harder,

  1020. it's grace.

1021. This isn't earn your bread,

1022. it's lie down in green pastures

1023. and receive the bread of life.

  1024. And man,

1025. when people are actually fed,

  1026. when they're actually satisfied

  1027. in Christ,

  1028. man, this changes everything.

  1029. This changes the world.

1030. When we are satisfied in Christ,

  1031. we stop clawing,

  1032. we stop hoarding,

1033. we stop stepping on people

  1034. to secure their slice

  1035. of the world.

1036. When you know you have

  1037. the bread of life,

1038. you don't have to hoard,

  1039. you can share.

1040. You don't have to dominate,

  1041. you can serve.

1042. You don't have to be anxious,

  1043. you can be generous.

  1044. Scarcity is no longer

  1045. your master.

  1046. That's what people

  1047. who feed on Christ

  1048. are like.

  1049. That's the freedom

  1050. that the early church

  1051. lived out of

  1052. in the medieval age

1053. when plagues hit the city

1054. and the people with means,

  1055. even the doctors,

1056. fled to their vacation estates.

  1057. The church stayed.

1058. They tended to the sick.

  1059. They fed the hungry.

  1060. They took in orphans.

  1061. They buried the dead.

  1062. Why?

  1063. Because when your life

1064. is hidden with Christ in God,

  1065. when you already have

  1066. eternal, abundant,

  1067. imperishable,

  1068. resurrection life,

1069. you can move toward suffering

1070. instead of away from it.

  1071. You can spend yourself

1072. because you're not losing yourself.

  1073. You're communing

  1074. with your risen Lord.

  1075. So the question today

  1076. is not first,

  1077. do you understand

  1078. everything that Jesus says?

  1079. It's this,

1080. will you stay with Him?

1081. Will you stay with Him?

1082. Will you come to Him

1083. again and again and again

  1084. at this table

  1085. with joy and thanksgiving?

1086. And will you feed on Him

1087. by faith, hope, and love?

  1088. For to whom else,

1089. whom else shall we go?

  1090. Our Lord has prepared

  1091. a table before

  1092. for us.

1093. It's already been paid for.

  1094. Supper's ready.

  1095. Come and eat.

  1096. Not because you're worthy,

  1097. but because He is.

1098. And He saved a seat

1099. for you at the family table.

1100. So let's taste and see

1101. that the Lord is good.

  1102. Blessed are those

1103. who do not take offense

  1104. at Him,

  1105. and happy are those

  1106. who trust in Him.

  1107. Amen.

  1108. Amen.

  1109. Let's pray.

  1110. Lord, this is something

  1111. that most of us

  1112. don't already know.

  1113. of course Jesus

1114. is the bread of life.

  1115. But we confess

1116. the ways that we cry out

  1117. in our hunger

  1118. because we've looked

  1119. to feed elsewhere.

  1120. Show us, Lord,

1121. there is no better bread.

  1122. what a gift

  1123. that the I Am

  1124. volunteered to be

  1125. I Am

  1126. the bread of life

  1127. broken

  1128. for broken people

  1129. like us.

  1130. Give us the faith.

  1131. Give us the reverence.

  1132. Give us the joy

1133. to feed on Him alone,

  1134. O God.

  1135. And change the world

  1136. because of that.

  1137. Because of how satisfied

  1138. Your people are

  1139. in Christ,

  1140. the bread of life.

1141. In His name we pray.

  1142. Amen.
