  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel according to John, chapters 21, verses 1-25

    John 21 chapter mention

  6. as printed in the liturgy.

  7. A reading from the Gospel according to John.

  8. Afterward, Jesus appeared to his disciples by the Sea of Galilee.

  9. It happened this way.

  10. Simon Peter, Thomas, also known as Didymus, Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee,

  11. and two other disciples were together.

  12. I'm going out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and they said, we'll go with you.

  13. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  14. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was

  15. Jesus.

  16. He called out to them, friends, haven't you any fish?

  17. No, they answered.

  18. He said, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  19. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

  20. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  21. As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, it is the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around

  22. him for he had taken it off and jumped into the water.

  23. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far

  24. from shore, about a hundred yards.

  25. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals.

  26. There was fish on it and some bread.

  27. So Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish you have just caught.

  28. So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore.

  29. It was full of large fish, 153.

  30. But even with so many, the net was not torn.

  31. Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.

  32. None of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  33. They knew it was the Lord.

  34. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish.

  35. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the

  36. dead.

  37. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love

  38. me more than these?

  39. Yes, Lord, he said.

  40. You know that I love you.

  41. Jesus said, feed my lambs.

  42. Again, Jesus said, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  43. He answered, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  44. Jesus said, take care of my sheep.

  45. The third time he said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  46. Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, do you love me?

  47. He said, Lord, you know all things.

  48. You know that I love you.

  49. Jesus said, feed my sheep.

  50. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger and dressed yourself and went where you wanted,

  51. but when you are old, will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead

  52. you where you do not want to go.

  53. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.

  54. Then he said to him, follow me.

  55. Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them.

  56. This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, Lord, who

  57. is going to betray you?

  58. When Peter saw him, he asked, Lord, what about him?

  59. Jesus answered, if I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?

  60. You must follow me.

  61. Because of this, the rumors spread among the believers that this disciple would not die.

  62. But Jesus did not say that he would not die.

  63. He only said, if I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?

  64. This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote about them.

  65. We know that his testimony is true.

  66. Jesus did many other things as well.

  67. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world will not

  68. have room for the books that would be written.

  69. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  70. Praise to you, O Christ.

  71. Thank you, Tonya, and happy birthday, Christ Church.

  72. We are honored today to have Bart and Katie Garrett here, who is my sister and brother-in-law,

  73. and more importantly, the founders of Christ Church, who poured 14 years of their lives out

  74. here, their time, talent, and treasure, lots of blood, sweat, and tears as well.

  75. And it would be hard to estimate just how much love that they've invested into this church.

  76. And so we're pleased to have them, and Bart's going to be leading us in communion and praying

  77. for us in a moment.

  78. We're also celebrating the 20th birthday of Christ Church by sending Andrew off on a four-month

  79. sabbatical.

  80. So happy birthday, Christ Church, via Andrew.

  81. Thank you.

  82. We, you know, I've been thinking this week a lot about this verse in 1 Corinthians 3.

  83. It's a new community of Christians in Corinth, all of them converts from their former Greco-Roman

  84. way of life.

  85. And Paul, the Apostle Paul, compares them to a new tree, this living organism.

  86. And he says, you know, there's been all these people that have planted the church, that have

  87. watered the church.

  88. But then Paul says, so neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but

  89. only God who makes things grow.

  90. And I just, my prayer all week has been, only God.

  91. You know, and that's really our heart today in this worship service, is we just want to

  92. thank only God and praise only God because only he's the one that makes things grow.

  93. And if we keep humbling ourselves before him and asking him, he'll keep making things grow.

  94. So only God.

  95. And we, you know, as we come to this, the end of this sermon series in the Gospel of John,

  96. it's just a beautiful picture, I think, of what a church is supposed to be.

  97. You know, Jesus is risen from the dead.

  98. He's alive forevermore.

  99. And he's gone through death.

  100. He's come out the other side.

  101. He's gone on into this new creation.

  102. And now he's gathering together with his disciples.

  103. And he's showing them the kind of life he wants them to live.

  104. And so what I want to talk about today is fishing with Jesus, eating near Jesus, and shepherding

  105. under Jesus.

  106. And you can just kind of track.

  107. These are the three movements of this text.

  108. Fishing with Jesus, eating near Jesus, and shepherding under Jesus.

  109. And let's start with fishing with Jesus.

  110. What is this story for?

  111. Why was this story written down for us?

  112. Well, it says explicitly in verse 1 that afterward, Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the

  113. Sea of Galilee.

  114. And this is the way it happened.

  115. And then down in verse 14, it says, this was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples

  116. after he was raised from the dead.

  117. So on Easter Sunday, God literally, physically, historically raised Jesus from the dead.

  118. And after that great event, Jesus is now coming to individuals and pairs and groups of disciples

  119. in order that he might convince them that he really has been glorified, that this body of

  120. his is an incorruptible and victorious body.

  121. And it's the prototype of the kind of bodies that his disciples are going to have when they're

  122. raised at the end of time.

  123. It's like Jesus is coming to them and he's wanting to convince them that even though sin and death

  124. had been ruling over this world for a very, very long time, through his cross and through his

  125. resurrection, sin and death had been overthrown.

  126. And now there's a new king.

  127. There's a new Lord.

  128. And he's reigning in grace.

  129. He's reigning in righteousness.

  130. He's wanting to share his eternal life with his disciples.

  131. And so Jesus just keeps appearing to them and trying to convince them of these things.

  132. And notice how he chooses to appear and reveal himself here in this story.

  133. It says in verse 3, Simon Peter told the rest of the disciples,

  134. I'm going out to fish.

  135. And they said, well, okay, we'll go along with you.

  136. And so they went out and they got into the boat.

  137. But that night they caught nothing.

  138. And early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

  139. And so he called out to them, friends, haven't you any fish?

  140. And what's interesting is that in the Greek text, he doesn't use the word friends.

  141. He uses the word kids.

  142. And the question sounds like this.

  143. Children, you have no fish, have you?

  144. It's this really playful and provocative thing that the resurrected Jesus is doing with his disciples.

  145. Why is he asking the question this way?

  146. Why is he drawing attention to their fishing failure and to their empty nets and their empty boat?

  147. Verse 3 emphasizes they fished all night and they caught what?

  148. Nothing.

  149. It's the same word that Jesus used in the upper room when he said, apart from me, you can do nothing.

  150. In John 15, I'll just read a little bit more of that text.

  151. He's in the upper room with his disciples the night before he dies.

  152. And he says, no branch can bear fruit by itself.

  153. It must remain in the vine.

  154. And neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

  155. I'm the vine.

  156. You are the branches.

  157. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.

  158. Apart from me, you can do nothing.

  159. See, the disciples have gone out fishing, but they're doing it by themselves.

  160. They're doing it apart from Jesus.

  161. They're doing it without the resurrected Jesus.

  162. And what is the result?

  163. The result is that they've caught nothing.

  164. And of course, you know, fishing in the Gospels, it's never just about fishing, is it?

  165. Because when Jesus first called these guys, what did he say?

  166. He said, come, come follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.

  167. Come follow me and I will send you out to fish for people.

  168. And that's the mission of the disciple community.

  169. That Jesus' disciples are to fish for people.

  170. But if we try to go fishing by ourselves, we try to fish apart from Jesus.

  171. And without Jesus, what are we going to catch?

  172. Nothing.

  173. If we try to bear fruit in our worship, in our fellowship, in our mission, apart from the living and life-giving vine,

  174. it's going to be like that moment where, you know, you see a tree that's bearing fruit and you pick a piece off and it looks so good.

  175. And then you bite into it and immediately you regret that decision and you just want to spit it out.

  176. That's what Jesus is saying.

  177. That's the kind of fruit you'll bear without me.

  178. And in the same way, Jesus is saying, if you try to go fishing for people, you're not really going to catch many people without me.

  179. Verse 6, he says, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  180. And, you know, when Jesus says this, every guy in the boat would immediately remember what happened the very first time.

  181. And I don't know if you remember that story, but it's in Luke chapter 5 where Jesus doesn't really know Peter very well.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  182. But he steps into Peter's boat and he starts giving Peter fishing advice.

  183. And Peter says, well, master, we've worked hard all night and we've caught, again, nothing.

  184. And Jesus tells Peter, well, put out into the deep water, which, by the way, no one fishes in the deep water.

  185. But he says, put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.

  186. Now, Peter has spent his whole life fishing these waters.

  187. His father and his grandfather before him have been fishermen.

  188. Peter knows how to make a good living at fishing.

  189. Peter has a thriving and a profitable fishing business.

  190. And he knows that Jesus is just a stonemason.

  191. Jesus is just a builder.

  192. Jesus knows nothing about fishing and is giving him terrible fishing advice.

  193. And he knows that Jesus is testing him in a way, asking him whether or not he's willing to go against his own instincts and his own experiences.

  194. But Peter also knows that he's been relying on himself and relying on all the things that he knows.

  195. And yet the result is he's caught what?

  196. He's caught nothing.

  197. And, you know, the turning point in that story in Luke 5 is that when Peter trusts Jesus, he says to Jesus,

  198. Jesus, because you say so, he says, Jesus, at your word, I'm going to let down the nets.

  199. And the result is that they get this enormous, miraculous catch of fish.

  200. And Peter, in that moment, he's astonished and he falls at Jesus' feet.

  201. He says, go away from me, Lord, for I'm a sinful man.

  202. And Jesus says to Peter, don't be afraid, Peter, because from now on you're going to fish for people.

  203. You're going to be catching people.

  204. So you see in John 21, when the resurrected and living Lord Jesus comes to Peter and comes to his disciples,

  205. he wants to let them know that the mission of fishing for people and catching people has not changed.

  206. But he also wants to let them know that the fishing mission has to be on my terms.

  207. And it has to be according to my word.

  208. Put out into deep water.

  209. Throw out your net on the right side of the boat.

  210. How can Jesus say that?

  211. How does Jesus know where all the fish are?

  212. Has Jesus gone to Bass Pro Shop and gotten some expensive, high-end,

  213. the ultrasonic fish finder?

  214. No, see, the universe was created through Jesus, ex nihilo.

  215. And God has raised Jesus up from the dead.

  216. And so fish aren't hard for Jesus.

  217. If Jesus says the fish are going to be out in the deep water,

  218. if Jesus says the fish are going to be on that side of the boat and not on this side of the boat,

  219. well, that's where the fish are going to be.

  220. Because that's how powerful Jesus is.

  221. And that's how powerful his word is.

  222. Isaiah 55 says,

  223. My word that goes forth from my mouth will not return to me empty,

  224. but it will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent my word.

  225. And you see, when Jesus' disciple community lives in obedience to his powerful word,

  226. when it trusts his trustworthy commands,

  227. when it carries out its mission under the authority of Jesus

  228. and in line with the direction of Jesus,

  229. well, we're not just going to catch many fish.

  230. We're going to catch many, many people.

  231. Friends, the question that this text asks us to examine ourselves with is,

  232. in what ways are we trying to bear fruit by ourselves?

  233. In what ways are we trying to catch people apart from him?

  234. How are we operating in our own energy,

  235. our own knowledge,

  236. our own resources,

  237. our own strength?

  238. But in the end,

  239. coming up feeling empty and exhausted,

  240. really bearing very little fruit worth having,

  241. not really catching many people,

  242. not really getting anywhere.

  243. See, verse 6 says,

  244. Throw your net on the right side of the boat,

  245. and you will find some.

  246. And when they did,

  247. they were unable to haul the net in

  248. because of the large number of fish.

  249. When they listened to his word,

  250. when they obeyed his word,

  251. that is the moment that they experienced Jesus' resurrection power.

  252. And that's how the fishing ministry of the church

  253. would continue over the next three centuries.

  254. Jesus,

  255. as his disciple community,

  256. was faithful to Jesus

  257. and obedient to Jesus.

  258. You know,

  259. in three centuries,

  260. half of the Roman Empire

  261. came into the net

  262. and came into the boat

  263. of the church.

  264. And that was not hard

  265. for God.

  266. And it's not hard for God today.

  267. We think that,

  268. oh man,

  269. it's like nearly impossible

  270. for God to bring people

  271. into a relationship with himself

  272. here in Berkeley

  273. and in the East Bay

  274. in 2026.

  275. But it's never been hard for God.

  276. In Christ's church,

  277. my prayer in our third decade

  278. is that

  279. we'll not go out

  280. and work hard

  281. individually,

  282. collectively,

  283. on our own,

  284. by ourselves,

  285. apart from the risen Lord.

  286. But rather,

  287. that we'll remain in him,

  288. that we'll listen to him,

  289. we'll do what he says,

  290. and then we'll just sit back

  291. and watch him do

  292. astonishing

  293. and supernatural things.

  294. Amen?

  295. So,

  296. the mission of the church

  297. is to fish with Jesus.

  298. But also,

  299. it's to,

  300. it's to eat

  301. near Jesus.

  302. It's about eating

  303. near Jesus.

  304. What fascinates me

  305. is,

  306. you know,

  307. Peter swims to shore

  308. and he makes

  309. all the other disciples

  310. do the hard work

  311. of getting the boat

  312. to shore.

  313. But when they all

  314. finally get to the shore,

  315. how does Jesus say,

  316. hey guys,

  317. I'm raised,

  318. I've been raised

  319. from the dead,

  320. let's celebrate.

  321. How does he do that?

  322. Well,

  323. he just cooks breakfast

  324. for his friends.

  325. It says in verse 9

  326. that they landed,

  327. they saw a fire

  328. of burning coals

  329. there with fish on it

  330. and some bread was there

  331. and Jesus said to them

  332. in verse 12,

  333. come and have breakfast.

  334. And none of the disciples

  335. dared ask him,

  336. who are you?

  337. Because they knew

  338. it was the Lord.

  339. And Jesus came

  340. and he took the bread

  341. and he gave it to them

  342. and he did the same

  343. with the fish

  344. and this was now

  345. the third time

  346. that he appeared

  347. to his disciples

  348. after he was raised

  349. from the dead.

  350. See,

  351. there's this simple

  352. invitation from Jesus

  353. that indicates

  354. something about

  355. the new creation

  356. that's been launched

  357. in the resurrection.

  358. And it's just

  359. this invitation

  360. to deep connection.

  361. This invitation

  362. to deep communion

  363. communion with Jesus.

  364. And I imagine

  365. when the risen

  366. and living Lord

  367. is giving them

  368. the bread

  369. and giving them

  370. the fish

  371. that their minds

  372. and their hearts

  373. are going back

  374. to those other moments,

  375. right,

  376. where Jesus took

  377. five loaves of fish

  378. and two,

  379. five loaves of bread,

  380. two little fish

  381. and he sent his disciples

  382. out and said,

  383. trust me,

  384. trust me guys,

  385. this is going to go

  386. a long way.

  387. And they went out

  388. and they fed thousands

  389. with barely anything.

  390. And I'm sure

  391. their hearts

  392. and their minds

  393. are going back

  394. the other night,

  395. the other week,

  396. where Jesus took

  397. the Passover meal

  398. and he said,

  399. he said,

  400. this is now

  401. the Lord's Supper

  402. and he gave them

  403. the bread

  404. and he said,

  405. this is my body,

  406. do this in remembrance

  407. of me.

  408. And so when Jesus

  409. says to them,

  410. come have breakfast

  411. with me,

  412. what's he saying?

  413. What does this mean

  414. for us?

  415. It means that

  416. we're not just supposed

  417. to believe in Jesus

  418. in some abstract

  419. and detached way.

  420. But rather,

  421. it's an invitation

  422. to intimate communion

  423. with Jesus

  424. to experience his life

  425. and his power.

  426. You see,

  427. in the ancient world

  428. to invite someone

  429. to come and eat

  430. with you,

  431. it meant a lot more

  432. than it means today.

  433. Today it means,

  434. hey,

  435. come eat with us

  436. and it's kind of

  437. a friendly gesture.

  438. I might possibly

  439. want to be your friend.

  440. But in the ancient world,

  441. it was a pledge.

  442. It was saying,

  443. I want you to be

  444. like family with me.

  445. I want you to be

  446. in closest relationship

  447. to me.

  448. And Jesus is saying here,

  449. I don't just want you guys

  450. to believe in me.

  451. I don't even just want you

  452. to obey me.

  453. I want you to know me.

  454. I want to share

  455. my life

  456. and all that I have

  457. with you.

  458. In the gospels,

  459. one of the chief complaints

  460. against Jesus

  461. is people keep coming

  462. to his disciples

  463. and say,

  464. Jesus,

  465. why,

  466. or they say to his disciples,

  467. why does your master Jesus

  468. keep eating with sinners?

  469. And

  470. they realize

  471. that Jesus is practicing

  472. radical hospitality.

  473. Jesus is

  474. including all the wrong people

  475. in the kingdom of God.

  476. And

  477. you think about

  478. these tax collectors

  479. Jesus was gathering

  480. around himself

  481. who were,

  482. just imagine

  483. the most despised people

  484. in our society.

  485. Sellouts,

  486. traitors.

  487. And

  488. Jesus is over

  489. at the home

  490. of one of these tax collectors

  491. named Matthew

  492. and he says

  493. at that meal,

  494. he says,

  495. it's not the healthy

  496. who need a doctor

  497. but the sick.

  498. I've not come to call

  499. the righteous

  500. but sinners.

  501. And he says

  502. to a guy named Zacchaeus,

  503. another tax collector,

  504. he says,

  505. today salvation

  506. has come to this house

  507. for the son of man

  508. came to seek

  509. and to save

  510. that which was lost.

  511. And so

  512. Jesus has this pattern

  513. of eating meals

  514. with all the wrong people

  515. and he gets to this beach

  516. after his resurrection

  517. and he says

  518. to these failed disciples

  519. who've denied him,

  520. who've abandoned him

  521. and he says,

  522. come have breakfast with me.

  523. Come sit at my table.

  524. Come share

  525. in my meal

  526. because

  527. I've come to seek

  528. and to save the lost.

  529. and I want to know you

  530. and I want you

  531. to know me.

  532. I want you to know

  533. my salvation.

  534. I want you to know

  535. the power

  536. of my grace.

  537. You see,

  538. here on this beach,

  539. the risen Lord

  540. is saying to them,

  541. I want to share

  542. my resurrection life

  543. and power

  544. with you.

  545. And I'll just pause here

  546. for just an application

  547. is just this,

  548. that do you know

  549. that the risen Lord

  550. wants to be

  551. in intimate communion

  552. with you.

  553. Not just here

  554. in this meal,

  555. but every morning,

  556. every evening,

  557. Jesus is there

  558. and he's waiting for you

  559. and he's saying,

  560. come and eat with me.

  561. Come and let me feed you.

  562. Let me nourish you.

  563. Let me give you substance

  564. and energy

  565. and life.

  566. I've never met

  567. a healthy Christian

  568. who did not have

  569. the daily practice

  570. of saying yes

  571. to this invitation

  572. to intimate communion

  573. with the risen Lord.

  574. And so my encouragement

  575. to you is just

  576. to turn off your device,

  577. put your book aside,

  578. don't watch the show,

  579. and just be

  580. near Jesus.

  581. Just be near him

  582. in his word.

  583. Just be near him

  584. in prayer.

  585. Just be close with him

  586. in Christian fellowship.

  587. Just come and stay

  588. by his side

  589. in the Lord's Supper

  590. and just enjoy

  591. the presence

  592. of our living Lord.

  593. That's what

  594. the Christian life

  595. is all about.

  596. That's what the ministry

  597. of the church

  598. is all about.

  599. And the second thing

  600. is Christian ministry

  601. is simply just finding

  602. people and saying,

  603. hey,

  604. do you want to come

  605. and have breakfast

  606. with me?

  607. Do you want to come

  608. and have lunch

  609. with us?

  610. And it's just simply

  611. inviting people,

  612. whether they're inside

  613. the church

  614. or outside the church,

  615. to come and enjoy

  616. intimate communion

  617. with us

  618. as we're in the presence

  619. of the risen Lord.

  620. That's what

  621. Christian ministry is.

  622. and I hope that

  623. this will be

  624. one of the marks

  625. of our ministry

  626. as we move

  627. into our third

  628. decade together

  629. because it's how

  630. the resurrected Lord

  631. is building

  632. his disciple community

  633. on that beach

  634. over a simple meal

  635. of bread and fish.

  636. The third thing

  637. I want to talk about

  638. is not just fishing

  639. with Jesus

  640. and eating near Jesus,

  641. but I want to talk

  642. finally about

  643. shepherding

  644. under Jesus.

  645. shepherding

  646. under Jesus.

  647. This is the final lesson

  648. in Jesus'

  649. resurrection appearance

  650. and it has to do

  651. with Peter

  652. and it has to do

  653. with all who,

  654. like Peter,

  655. have ever spectacularly

  656. and miserably

  657. failed.

  658. Here we learn

  659. something about

  660. how Jesus

  661. can heal

  662. our memories

  663. and how he can

  664. come into places

  665. of buried hurt

  666. and fear

  667. places of hidden

  668. failure and sin

  669. in our lives

  670. and he can just

  671. come in

  672. and somehow

  673. he just deals

  674. with it.

  675. And Jesus just,

  676. he draws Peter

  677. around this meal

  678. and this fire

  679. and he begins

  680. to just gently

  681. expose this deep

  682. and unhealed

  683. wound in Peter

  684. and start to deal

  685. with this failure.

  686. And if you'll remember

  687. back to John 13,

  688. it was over a meal,

  689. it was over

  690. the Last Supper

  691. where Peter

  692. insisted emphatically

  693. he says,

  694. you know,

  695. Jesus,

  696. I'm going to remain

  697. loyal to you

  698. even if all these

  699. others are not,

  700. I'm going to be

  701. loyal to you.

  702. And he says to Jesus,

  703. I'm going to follow you

  704. to prison and to death.

  705. I'm prepared to lay down

  706. my life on your behalf.

  707. And then later

  708. in John 18,

  709. it was over a charcoal fire

  710. in that courtyard

  711. where Peter

  712. tried to do that

  713. but he failed

  714. spectacularly.

  715. Not just once,

  716. not just twice

  717. but three times,

  718. he denied three times.

  719. It's not just

  720. that I don't follow him,

  721. it's that I don't

  722. even know Jesus.

  723. I've never even

  724. met the guy.

  725. And Peter goes out

  726. that night

  727. in shame

  728. and in tears

  729. and he's going to be

  730. dogged by this memory

  731. for the rest of his life

  732. that I was a coward

  733. and I was a failure

  734. and I'm full of guilt

  735. and I'm full of shame.

  736. How in the world

  737. did I screw up

  738. so miserably?

  739. How did I fail Jesus

  740. in his hour

  741. of greatest need?

  742. And so,

  743. the resurrected Jesus

  744. comes and he recreates

  745. the scene of Jesus'

  746. pride at that meal

  747. or Peter's pride

  748. at that meal

  749. and Peter's failure

  750. at that fire

  751. and now here on the beach

  752. there's a new fire

  753. and there's a fresh meal

  754. and Jesus begins

  755. to just gently expose

  756. this wound

  757. in his beloved disciple

  758. and he begins

  759. to treat it

  760. with love

  761. and with prayer

  762. and he begins

  763. to bathe it

  764. in the power of God

  765. and it's one of the most

  766. spectacular exchanges

  767. in the whole Bible

  768. where Jesus asked Peter

  769. three times

  770. he says,

  771. do you love me?

  772. Do you love me?

  773. Do you love me?

  774. And Jesus is giving Peter

  775. an opportunity

  776. to admit

  777. how weak he is.

  778. He's giving him

  779. an opportunity

  780. to repent

  781. of all of his

  782. failures

  783. and how does Peter

  784. respond to this

  785. gentle probing

  786. of Jesus

  787. in his heart?

  788. Well,

  789. Peter just says,

  790. Lord,

  791. you know.

  792. Lord,

  793. you know

  794. that I love you.

  795. Lord,

  796. you know all things.

  797. You see,

  798. now Peter rests

  799. his confidence

  800. not on the strength

  801. of his love

  802. for Jesus.

  803. No,

  804. he's resting

  805. on the sureness

  806. of Jesus'

  807. knowledge

  808. of him

  809. and of all things.

  810. Jesus knows

  811. and Jesus

  812. has the power

  813. to deal

  814. with Peter's

  815. threefold

  816. failure

  817. and to take

  818. away his sins

  819. and not only

  820. to take away

  821. his sins

  822. but to take away

  823. the memories

  824. of his old

  825. failings

  826. and sores

  827. and his wounds

  828. and his pains.

  829. That's how powerful

  830. the resurrected

  831. Jesus is.

  832. You know,

  833. they're probably

  834. at this point

  835. walking along

  836. the beach

  837. and Peter's

  838. answering Jesus'

  839. questions

  840. and Jesus'

  841. response is not

  842. just a pat

  843. on the back

  844. and saying,

  845. hey,

  846. that's all right,

  847. Peter.

  848. Come and be my

  849. sheep.

  850. No,

  851. he doesn't say

  852. come and be my

  853. sheep.

  854. He says,

  855. Peter,

  856. you're the biggest

  857. failure I've ever

  858. met

  859. and then he gives

  860. him a command

  861. and a fresh

  862. challenge

  863. and a new

  864. commission

  865. and Peter's

  866. threefold denial

  867. is just wiped

  868. out and forgiven

  869. with this

  870. threefold commission.

  871. He says,

  872. Peter,

  873. it's time

  874. for you to learn

  875. how to be a

  876. forgiven

  877. and fearless

  878. shepherd.

  879. It's time

  880. for you to learn

  881. how to feed

  882. my lambs.

  883. It's time

  884. for you to look

  885. after my

  886. sheep.

  887. You see,

  888. when Jesus

  889. forgives us,

  890. he also gives

  891. us a job

  892. to do.

  893. He also

  894. equips us

  895. and he empowers

  896. us to share

  897. in his

  898. ministry.

  899. that moment

  900. when we

  901. profess our

  902. love for

  903. Jesus for

  904. the first

  905. time,

  906. he says,

  907. well,

  908. then let's

  909. get to

  910. work.

  911. And this

  912. is the

  913. one who

  914. in John

  915. 10 said,

  916. well,

  917. I'm the

  918. good shepherd.

  919. And now

  920. he's saying

  921. to Peter,

  922. I want you

  923. to share

  924. in my

  925. work and

  926. my ministry

  927. of shepherding

  928. with me.

  929. I'm the

  930. one who

  931. has the

  932. task of

  933. leading

  934. and feeding

  935. and caring

  936. for my

  937. sheep.

  938. I'm the

  939. one who's

  940. going to

  941. guide them

  942. to and

  943. from

  944. good

  945. pastures

  946. and green

  947. pastures.

  948. I'm the

  949. one who's

  950. supposed to

  951. keep them

  952. safe from

  953. all the

  954. wolves and

  955. the thieves.

  956. But Peter,

  957. from now

  958. on,

  959. now that I've

  960. plunged your

  961. failure into

  962. my grace,

  963. I want you

  964. to share

  965. in my

  966. work of

  967. shepherding.

  968. And of

  969. course,

  970. we know that

  971. Peter had a

  972. special role

  973. in the early

  974. church and the

  975. founding and

  976. leadership of

  977. the church.

  978. But really,

  979. every

  980. Christian,

  981. everyone who's

  982. been baptized,

  983. everyone who

  984. comes and

  985. shares in the

  986. meal with

  987. Jesus,

  988. every Christian

  989. has a share

  990. in the

  991. ministry of

  992. the good

  993. shepherd.

  994. And here's

  995. the secret of

  996. that ministry.

  997. Here's the

  998. secret of

  999. your ministry

  1000. and my

  1001. ministry.

  1002. Whether you're

  1003. a layperson

  1004. or you're

  1005. ordained,

  1006. whether you're

  1007. part-time or

  1008. full-time or

  1009. volunteer,

  1010. if you're

  1011. going to do

  1012. anything as a

  1013. follower of

  1014. Jesus,

  1015. if you're

  1016. going to do

  1017. anything as a

  1018. servant of

  1019. Jesus,

  1020. this is what it

  1021. all comes down

  1022. to.

  1023. Somewhere deep

  1024. down inside,

  1025. the question

  1026. is,

  1027. is there a

  1028. love for

  1029. Jesus?

  1030. Can you say

  1031. with Peter,

  1032. yes,

  1033. Lord,

  1034. you know that

  1035. somewhere deep

  1036. down inside,

  1037. I love

  1038. you.

  1039. I love

  1040. you.

  1041. I love

  1042. you.

  1043. That's the

  1044. key and

  1045. ultimate

  1046. question.

  1047. No matter

  1048. how much

  1049. you've

  1050. struggled and

  1051. failed in

  1052. your discipleship,

  1053. Jesus wants

  1054. to know,

  1055. do you

  1056. love me?

  1057. And though

  1058. goodness knows

  1059. we've all let

  1060. him down

  1061. plenty of

  1062. times,

  1063. he wants

  1064. to find

  1065. that love

  1066. in us.

  1067. He wants

  1068. to give us

  1069. a chance

  1070. to express

  1071. our love

  1072. and he wants

  1073. to come

  1074. like Peter

  1075. and heal

  1076. the hurts

  1077. and heal

  1078. the failures

  1079. of our

  1080. past and

  1081. say,

  1082. well,

  1083. let's get

  1084. on with

  1085. it.

  1086. You've

  1087. got a

  1088. new job

  1089. to do.

  1090. And it's

  1091. out of that

  1092. grace and

  1093. joy and

  1094. relief that

  1095. you've been

  1096. forgiven.

  1097. And as a

  1098. sign that you

  1099. are forgiven,

  1100. that Jesus

  1101. wants you to

  1102. go out and

  1103. he wants you

  1104. to love

  1105. him by

  1106. loving

  1107. his flock.

  1108. All of us

  1109. are called

  1110. to find a

  1111. sheep,

  1112. even just

  1113. one sheep,

  1114. and to

  1115. care for

  1116. that sheep

  1117. with selfless

  1118. love,

  1119. like Jesus.

  1120. All of us

  1121. are called

  1122. to find

  1123. at least

  1124. one sheep

  1125. and just

  1126. feed that

  1127. sheep with

  1128. biblical

  1129. truth.

  1130. All of us

  1131. are called

  1132. to just

  1133. find one

  1134. sheep and

  1135. just shepherd

  1136. that sheep

  1137. with humble

  1138. service and

  1139. to go out

  1140. and show

  1141. our love

  1142. for Jesus

  1143. by loving

  1144. his church.

  1145. So Christ

  1146. Church,

  1147. as we mark

  1148. our 20th

  1149. birthday today,

  1150. as we enter

  1151. into the

  1152. third decade

  1153. of our

  1154. ministry

  1155. together,

  1156. Jesus is

  1157. offering us

  1158. the same

  1159. thing he

  1160. offered those

  1161. disciples on

  1162. that beach.

  1163. He's just

  1164. offering us

  1165. a restored

  1166. and a

  1167. transformed

  1168. and a

  1169. newly

  1170. commissioned

  1171. life.

  1172. To come

  1173. and fish

  1174. with Jesus.

  1175. To come

  1176. and eat

  1177. near Jesus.

  1178. To come

  1179. and shepherd

  1180. under Jesus.

  1181. it's an

  1182. amazing

  1183. life.

  1184. That the

  1185. resurrected

  1186. Lord is

  1187. calling us

  1188. to live

  1189. with him.

  1190. And that's

  1191. what I pray

  1192. we'll be

  1193. about.

  1194. That's what I

  1195. pray we'll

  1196. get together

  1197. and do

  1198. is the

  1199. fishing

  1200. and the

  1201. eating

  1202. and the

  1203. shepherding

  1204. of Jesus.

  1205. In the name
