  4. Today's scripture reading is from the Acts of the Apostle, chapter 1, verse 14, and chapter 2, verses 1 to 21, as printed in the liturgy.

  5. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

  6. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the woman and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

  7. When the day of the Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

  8. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

  9. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

  10. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in their tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

  11. Now they were staying in Jerusalem, God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

  12. When they heard the sounds, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

  13. Utterly amazed, they asked,

  14. Aren't all those who are speaking Galileans?

  15. Then how is that each of us hear them as in our native languages?

  16. Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

  17. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya near Cyrene.

  18. Visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs,

  19. we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues.

  20. Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another,

  21. What does this mean?

  22. Some, however, made fun of them and said,

  23. They had too much wine.

  24. Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd,

  25. Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you.

  26. Listen carefully to what I say.

  27. These people are not drunk, as you suppose.

  28. It's only nine in the morning.

  29. No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.

  30. In the last days, God says,

  31. I will pour my spirit on all people.

  32. Your sons and daughters will prophecy.

  33. Your young men will see visions.

  34. Your old men will dream dreams.

  35. Even on my servants, both men and women,

  36. I will pour out on my spirit in those days.

  37. And they will prophecy.

  38. I will show wonders in the heavens above,

  39. and signs on the earth below.

  40. Blood and fire and billows of smoke.

  41. The sun will be turned to darkness,

  42. and the moon to blood.

  43. Before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

  44. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

  45. This is the word of the Lord.

  46. Thanks be to God.

  47. Thank you for that wonderful reading, Sebastian.

  48. Appreciate that.

  49. Good morning.

  50. If you were here last week,

  51. you know that we began a new sermon series

  52. in this great book called The Acts of the Apostles.

  53. And we were introduced to the author of this book,

  54. a man named Luke,

  55. who is a doctor, a historian.

  56. He's a highly educated companion of the Apostle Paul.

  57. He's the only Gentile author in the New Testament.

  58. The only of the four evangelists

  59. who gave us a second volume of this exciting story

  60. of the continuing works and words of Jesus

  61. in and through the life of the church.

  62. And we also met last week,

  63. we met Luke's student named Theophilus.

  64. Theophilus was like many of us,

  65. intellectually educated and sophisticated.

  66. He had been trained in the worldviews

  67. of the Greco-Roman Empire

  68. and the various life systems that were on offer to him.

  69. But he had come to encounter Jesus

  70. and he became a new convert.

  71. And so Luke has written his gospel.

  72. He's written this Acts of the Apostles

  73. in order to teach Theophilus

  74. what it means to trust in Jesus,

  75. what it means to serve the church,

  76. what it means to think like a Christian

  77. and to live like a Christian.

  78. And Luke is really inviting and challenging Theophilus

  79. and people like Theophilus,

  80. people like us,

  81. to come to understand

  82. and to be convinced by the great doctrines

  83. of the Christian faith.

  84. The doctrine of Jesus' resurrection,

  85. that Jesus is alive.

  86. The doctrine of Jesus' ascension,

  87. that he has been exalted to God's throne

  88. where he's ruling over all things.

  89. The doctrine of Pentecost,

  90. where Jesus pours out the Holy Spirit

  91. to empower the church.

  92. And so today we're going to be focusing

  93. on this third person of the Trinity

  94. that we call the Holy Spirit.

  95. And we said recently that

  96. there's a great deal of ignorance

  97. and confusion about the Holy Spirit today.

  98. We've heard the Nicene Creed paraphrased this way,

  99. that I believe in God the Father

  100. and I believe in Jesus Christ as Son,

  101. but I'm not so sure about the Holy Spirit.

  102. And the person and the work of the Holy Spirit

  103. is often ignored and often glossed over.

  104. But of all the gifts that Jesus gives,

  105. the Holy Spirit is the greatest gift.

  106. It is impossible to become a Christian,

  107. let alone to live and to grow as a Christian

  108. without the Holy Spirit.

  109. And if you're a Christian,

  110. all that you have and all that you are

  111. is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

  112. You owe it all to the Holy Spirit.

  113. But it's also true that

  114. wherever we look at the church

  115. in the Western world especially,

  116. wherever we look at the church in North America,

  117. it seems clear that there's an evident need

  118. for a deeper work of the Holy Spirit,

  119. both individually and collectively.

  120. And so we do well,

  121. like Theophilus, the student of Luke,

  122. to come and learn about the Holy Spirit

  123. and to learn about what the Holy Spirit

  124. might be wanting to do in and among us today.

  125. And so I want to talk about four things today.

  126. And I know this makes you nervous

  127. when I don't have three points but four points,

  128. but I proved to you last week

  129. with a four-point sermon that I got you out on time.

  130. So do not worry.

  131. I want to talk about four things.

  132. The signs of the Spirit,

  133. the prophecy of the Spirit,

  134. the new life of the Spirit,

  135. and the fullness of the Spirit.

  136. The signs of the Spirit,

  137. the prophecy of the Spirit,

  138. the new life of the Spirit,

  139. and the fullness of the Spirit.

  140. And let's start with the signs of the Spirit.

  141. It's not as if the Holy Spirit did not exist

  142. prior to the day of Pentecost.

  143. The Holy Spirit, like the Father and like the Son,

  144. is eternal and has shown up in history

  145. and been given to particular people here and there.

  146. And of course, Jesus,

  147. His whole life was full of the Holy Spirit.

  148. But the Holy Spirit had never been poured out en masse.

  149. And never come in an overwhelming and unmistakable way.

  150. And on the day of Pentecost,

  151. the Holy Spirit comes down on this group

  152. of 120 disciples at one time.

  153. And then through their preaching,

  154. the Holy Spirit comes down on 3,000 new converts,

  155. new believers on that day.

  156. And we read in Acts chapter 1 verse 14,

    Acts 1:14

  157. it says that they all joined together constantly

  158. in prayer.

  159. And that in verse 1, it says,

  160. on the day of Pentecost, when Pentecost came,

  161. they were all together in one place.

  162. Now, why were they there?

  163. They were there because the resurrected Jesus told them,

  164. I want you to wait together

  165. to be clothed with power from on high.

  166. And I'm going to baptize you in the power

  167. of the Holy Spirit so that you can be my witnesses.

  168. And so instinctively, they went for 10 days to pray,

  169. to pray together in a unified way,

  170. to pray constantly in a persevering way.

  171. And this is how the great movements of the Holy Spirit

  172. have happened throughout the course of history,

  173. is when the church gets together to constantly pray

  174. for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  175. And we'll come back to that at the end.

  176. But who is this Holy Spirit that they're praying

  177. so fervently to receive?

  178. Well, we see in our text today three observable signs

  179. or wonders that tell us who the Holy Spirit is

  180. and what the Holy Spirit does.

  181. And first of all, we see the wind of new creation.

  182. The wind of new creation.

  183. It says in verse 2 that suddenly a sound

  184. like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven

  185. and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

  186. And both in Hebrew and in Greek,

  187. the word for spirit means wind or it means breath.

  188. And this takes us back to the very first page of the Bible.

  189. In Genesis 1, it says that the Spirit of God

  190. is blowing like a wind to turn the chaos into creation.

  191. And then on page 2 of our Bible, in Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  192. it says that the Spirit of God

  193. breathes into the lungs of Adam to fill him with life.

  194. And so the Holy Spirit has this creative

  195. and life-giving power.

  196. And so here on Pentecost, when the sound in their ears

  197. is like a Category 5 hurricane force wind,

  198. it's telling these disciples that God's Spirit

  199. is doing a new creation.

  200. The new creation that he began

  201. in the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  202. he's continuing in the life of the church.

  203. And that God's Spirit has come here now

  204. to fill the church's lungs with life and with power.

  205. And to enable the church to breathe in the presence of God.

  206. God's Spirit is the new wind of new creation.

  207. But it's also the fresh fire of a new exodus.

  208. Not just the wind of new creation,

  209. but the fire of a new exodus.

  210. In verse 3, it says that

  211. they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire

  212. that separated and came to rest on each of them.

  213. So they can hear the wind with their ears

  214. and they can see the fire with their eyes

  215. and it looked like the fire in the book of Exodus.

  216. The burning bush.

  217. The pillar of fire that came down on the people of God

  218. and led them from slavery in Egypt

  219. to freedom in the promised land.

  220. And everywhere that pillar of fire came to rest,

  221. you knew that this is the place

  222. where the presence of God

  223. and the glory of the Lord dwells.

  224. And you note that

  225. the fire is here marking each individual believer

  226. as a holy tabernacle,

  227. as a holy temple of the holy God.

  228. And this fire with its radiating light

  229. and its purifying heat

  230. symbolizes that this God who's a consuming fire

  231. has come to His people to burn away

  232. and to purify and to refine

  233. all that's polluted

  234. and all that's unworthy of Him

  235. that we might be holy as God is holy.

  236. So they hear the wind of Genesis.

  237. They see the fire of Exodus

  238. and it tells them that a new creation

  239. and a new exodus is underway.

  240. And the wind and the fire of the Holy Spirit

  241. is releasing this immense power,

  242. the uncreated energies of God

  243. into the people of God.

  244. And when the Holy Spirit comes,

  245. what happens?

  246. Well, the spirit that ordered the chaos of creation

  247. and the spirit who liberated God's people from bondage,

  248. the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead,

  249. that spirit is now enlivening

  250. and animating the church

  251. and enabling her to speak.

  252. And the Holy Spirit affects several major changes

  253. on the speech of the disciples

  254. which are described here as

  255. quote-unquote utterly amazing.

  256. And first of all,

  257. what we see is that these disciples

  258. begin speaking courageously.

  259. In verse 4,

  260. it says that all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

  261. and began to speak in other tongues

  262. as the Spirit enabled them.

  263. And down in verse 11,

  264. it says,

  265. You remember before Pentecost,

  266. these disciples were weak

  267. and quite helpless and afraid.

  268. But here, after Pentecost,

  269. they're filled with a blazing power.

  270. And you can see the courage of Peter.

  271. Peter, who denied his Lord,

  272. is now fearlessly standing up

  273. and facing this crowd,

  274. facing the same authorities

  275. that have the same power

  276. to do to him what they'd just done to Jesus.

  277. And he's totally unafraid.

  278. These Christians who had been hiding behind locked doors,

  279. they become a force

  280. that will in due course

  281. turn the Roman Empire upside down.

  282. How do we explain that change?

  283. Well, the Spirit of God came down.

  284. Through the Holy Spirit,

  285. the risen and enthroned Lord Jesus

  286. is making his energy and his power

  287. and his authority available

  288. to those who are calling on his name.

  289. But what's amazing is the disciples

  290. not only begin to speak courageously,

  291. but they also begin to speak truthfully.

  292. Right?

  293. Because what's going on here

  294. is not just a new creation

  295. and a new exodus,

  296. but there's new revelation.

  297. The new revelation that's recorded for us

  298. in the New Testament.

  299. And you remember Jesus' favorite name

  300. for the Holy Spirit.

  301. What's his favorite name for the Holy Spirit?

  302. It's the Spirit of truth.

  303. The Spirit who reveals the truth.

  304. And when the Holy Spirit comes,

  305. he brings people under the revelation of God,

  306. under the truth of God's word.

  307. And what is the truth that this Holy Spirit

  308. is enabling his disciples to speak?

  309. Well, in verse 11, it says,

  310. we hear them declaring the wonders of God,

  311. the megalia to theu.

  312. We hear them declaring the megaworks of God.

  313. We hear them declaring the mighty acts

  314. of salvation by God in history.

  315. And we're going to look on another Sunday

  316. at the heart of Peter's Pentecost sermon.

  317. But Peter begins telling them

  318. about the wonderful works

  319. that God the Father

  320. has done through his son Jesus

  321. to achieve and to accomplish our salvation.

  322. He tells them about the wonderful work

  323. that Jesus did in his life,

  324. which was perfectly righteous.

  325. And he tells them about the wonderful work

  326. of Jesus' death

  327. that is sufficient to atone for sins.

  328. And he tells them about the wonderful work

  329. of Jesus' resurrection

  330. that he conquered over death.

  331. That he tells them about the wonderful work

  332. of Jesus' ascension into heaven

  333. where he reigns from God's throne

  334. and where he applies his righteousness

  335. and life to us, his people.

  336. You see, through the disciples,

  337. the Holy Spirit is speaking

  338. the truth of the gospel,

  339. the truth of the wonderful salvation

  340. in Jesus Christ.

  341. And not only are they speaking courageously,

  342. not only are they speaking truthfully,

  343. but they're also beginning to speak internationally.

  344. The Holy Spirit is dancing over the disciples

  345. with tongues of fire

  346. and is enabling the church

  347. to find her tongue,

  348. to open her mouth,

  349. and to begin to speak

  350. in reasonable, meaningful,

  351. persuasive content

  352. in languages that everyone can understand.

  353. And if you'll notice in verse 9 through 11,

  354. it outlines for us 15 language groups,

  355. 15 distinct dialects

  356. that were spoken throughout the Roman Empire

  357. that represent every point of the compass

  358. from east to west and north to south,

  359. from the Middle East to Asia,

  360. from Africa to Europe.

  361. The Holy Spirit comes upon these 120 disciples

  362. and he transcends their ability

  363. and he transforms their inability

  364. and begins empowering them to do

  365. well beyond what they could ever have imagined

  366. doing on their own.

  367. And it says that they're speaking

  368. the wonderful works of God

  369. in languages that they've never studied

  370. and never learned to speak.

  371. And nothing could have demonstrated more clearly

  372. the international nature

  373. of the kingdom of God in Christ.

  374. That here God is creating the beginnings

  375. of a new international family

  376. that's centered on Jesus Christ.

  377. And as we read through the New Testament,

  378. as you read through church history,

  379. the more the church is faithful to her mission

  380. to bear witness to Christ

  381. to the very ends of the earth,

  382. the more this church becomes

  383. even more international,

  384. even more multicultural,

  385. even more polychromatic.

  386. And so let's pause here

  387. for some brief application.

  388. You know, one of the most ancient

  389. and foundational prayers of the church

  390. is a very simple prayer.

  391. It's come Holy Spirit.

  392. Come Holy Spirit.

  393. And when we say this prayer,

  394. we don't expect the unique

  395. and miraculous signs of Pentecost,

  396. like hearing wind and seeing fire

  397. and speaking in unknown languages.

  398. But here's what we do expect

  399. when we pray,

  400. Come Holy Spirit.

  401. When you say,

  402. Come Holy Spirit,

  403. you can expect that He will blow

  404. a power into your life

  405. like the wind.

  406. When you say,

  407. Come Holy Spirit,

  408. you can expect that He will bring

  409. a blazing purity

  410. into your life like fire.

  411. When you say,

  412. Come Holy Spirit,

  413. you can expect that He's going to put you

  414. in situations like He did

  415. with Peter and the disciples,

  416. where He'll enable you

  417. to become fearless and courageous.

  418. And He'll put you in conversations

  419. where you may be the only Christian

  420. from which another person

  421. can hear the truth of the gospel

  422. and the wonderful works of God

  423. and Jesus Christ.

  424. The Holy Spirit,

  425. when you ask Him to come,

  426. He will shake up your relationships

  427. and your priorities

  428. so that you begin to feel a burden

  429. for people who are completely unlike you,

  430. people that do not look like you

  431. and do not talk like you

  432. and do not eat like you,

  433. and He'll send you

  434. to all different kinds of peoples

  435. and cultures.

  436. And I find myself,

  437. when I read this,

  438. on the one hand,

  439. I'm quite attracted

  440. to the power of the Holy Spirit.

  441. But on the other hand,

  442. I'm not really sure

  443. if I want all the uncomfortable

  444. inconveniences

  445. of what the Spirit

  446. might bring into my life,

  447. which He's clearly doing

  448. here in the early church.

  449. And so I say to you this morning,

  450. be careful what you pray for.

  451. Be careful what you ask for.

  452. When you pray,

  453. come Holy Spirit,

  454. He won't let you remain as you are.

  455. He'll bring His wind.

  456. He'll bring His fire.

  457. He'll bring courage and truth.

  458. He'll bring all kinds of people

  459. into your life you never expected.

  460. These are the signs

  461. of the Holy Spirit.

  462. But let's talk about

  463. the prophecy of the Spirit.

  464. Let's talk a little bit

  465. about the prophecy

  466. of the Holy Spirit.

  467. For some reason,

  468. a minority of these people

  469. that are there on that day,

  470. they understand none

  471. of the languages

  472. that are being spoken.

  473. And it says in verse 13

  474. that some, however,

  475. made fun of them

  476. and they said

  477. they have had too much wine.

  478. The gift of the Holy Spirit

  479. made God's wonders

  480. clear to so many people

  481. and yet it was a garbled message

  482. to others who dismissed it.

  483. They dismissed the Spirit-given gospel

  484. as a bunch of drunken,

  485. incomprehensible nonsense.

  486. And this is why Peter stands

  487. to address the crowd.

  488. Now, I wonder if you were Peter

  489. and someone accused you

  490. of behaving like you were drunk.

  491. Would you be so biblically literate

  492. and so Bible-saturated

  493. that you would start quoting

  494. the prophet Joel?

  495. Is that what you would do

  496. in this moment?

  497. Peter is so Spirit-filled,

  498. he's so Spirit-inspired

  499. that his instinct

  500. is to open the Bible

  501. and gather a crowd

  502. and say,

  503. let's do a study

  504. of the Old Testament.

  505. Let's open the Scriptures

  506. to see what God

  507. has revealed about himself.

  508. And that's one of the ways

  509. you know that you're

  510. a Spirit-empowered Christian

  511. is that you know the Bible

  512. and you open the Bible.

  513. And what does Peter

  514. want them to see?

  515. Well, in verse 14,

  516. he says to the crowd,

  517. fellow Jews

  518. and all of you

  519. who live in Jerusalem,

  520. let me explain this to you.

  521. Listen carefully

  522. to what I say.

  523. These people are not drunk

  524. as you suppose.

  525. It's only nine in the morning

  526. for goodness sake.

  527. No, this is what was spoken

  528. by the prophet Joel.

  529. In the last days,

  530. God says,

  531. I will pour out my Spirit

  532. on all people.

  533. Your sons and daughters

  534. will prophesy.

  535. Your young men

  536. will see visions.

  537. Your old men

  538. will dream dreams.

  539. And even on my servants,

  540. both men and women,

  541. I will pour out my Spirit

  542. in those days

  543. and they will prophesy.

  544. No, Peter says,

  545. we are not intoxicated

  546. with alcoholic spirits.

  547. We are, in fact,

  548. experiencing God's

  549. ancient promises

  550. of the Holy Spirit.

  551. God promised long ago

  552. that in the last days

  553. when the Messiah comes,

  554. the Holy Spirit

  555. will be poured out

  556. and He'll be poured out

  557. in generous

  558. and abundant measure.

  559. It will not be like

  560. a little drizzle.

  561. It will not be

  562. a little shower of rain.

  563. It will be like

  564. a tropical rainstorm.

  565. It will be an absolute

  566. downpour of the Holy Spirit.

  567. And it won't be like

  568. in times past

  569. in the Old Testament

  570. where the Holy Spirit

  571. came on particular people

  572. at particular places

  573. for particular purposes

  574. like the judges

  575. and the priests

  576. and the kings

  577. and the prophets.

  578. No, He says,

  579. the Holy Spirit

  580. will be poured out

  581. on all people.

  582. Now, I have to clarify here

  583. because all people

  584. does not mean

  585. everybody irrespective

  586. of their inward readiness

  587. to receive the sacred gift

  588. of the Holy Spirit.

  589. All people means

  590. everybody irrespective

  591. of their outward status.

  592. God is not going

  593. to give

  594. the precious gift

  595. of the Holy Spirit

  596. to just anybody.

  597. He has

  598. certain spiritual conditions

  599. by which

  600. we are to receive

  601. the Holy Spirit.

  602. That is a

  603. repentant heart

  604. and a believing heart.

  605. But this is a wonderfully

  606. inclusive vision

  607. because it says

  608. that there's no category

  609. of people left out.

  610. Both genders,

  611. all ages,

  612. every class,

  613. every race,

  614. God gives His Holy Spirit

  615. to all

  616. regardless of

  617. social distinctions.

  618. And yet,

  619. though it's a wonderfully

  620. inclusive vision,

  621. it's also a wonderfully

  622. focused vision

  623. because it happens

  624. as verse 21 says,

  625. to all who call

  626. on the name of the Lord

  627. in penitent faith.

  628. Male and female,

  629. young and old,

  630. slave and free,

  631. all who call

  632. on the name of the Lord

  633. in humble trust.

  634. These are the ones

  635. who will be empowered

  636. to prophesy.

  637. And this was the vision

  638. of Moses,

  639. the prophet of prophets.

  640. He said in the Torah

  641. in Numbers chapter 11,

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  642. it says,

  643. Moses said,

  644. I wish that all

  645. of the Lord's people

  646. were prophets

  647. and I wish that the Lord

  648. would put His Spirit

  649. on absolutely

  650. all of them.

  651. And now,

  652. here at Pentecost,

  653. this ancient vision

  654. of Moses

  655. and this ancient word

  656. of the prophet Joel

  657. have come to fulfillment

  658. where the Holy Spirit

  659. is abundantly poured out

  660. so that all of God's

  661. faith-filled people

  662. are prophesying.

  663. These 120 men

  664. and women

  665. are declaring

  666. the wonderful works

  667. of God

  668. in Jesus Christ.

  669. And again,

  670. let's pause

  671. for a little bit

  672. of application here

  673. because last week

  674. we heard Jesus say

  675. that you will receive power

  676. when the Holy Spirit

  677. comes on you

  678. and you will be

  679. my witnesses.

  680. And these 120 men

  681. and women

  682. are now empowered

  683. to be prophetic

  684. witnesses of Jesus Christ.

  685. And they're different

  686. than we are.

  687. They are eyewitnesses

  688. of the life,

  689. death,

  690. and resurrection

  691. of Jesus

  692. in a way that we are not.

  693. None of us

  694. are capital A apostles.

  695. None of us

  696. are capital P prophets.

  697. None of us

  698. are organs

  699. of divine revelation.

  700. None of us

  701. can say,

  702. thus saith the Lord

  703. and add to

  704. the canon

  705. of God's word.

  706. But I do want

  707. to say that

  708. the church today,

  709. and that includes

  710. every single one

  711. of us here,

  712. we do have

  713. a subsidiary

  714. prophetic calling

  715. and prophetic

  716. ministry

  717. to bear witness

  718. to the revelation

  719. of God

  720. that He completed

  721. in Christ

  722. and in the Scriptures.

  723. And Joel's vision

  724. is that

  725. the people of God,

  726. all the people of God

  727. would be brought

  728. under the control

  729. of the Spirit of God

  730. and the Word of God.

  731. And the result

  732. of our coming

  733. under the control

  734. of the Spirit of God

  735. and the Word of God

  736. is that our mouths

  737. would begin

  738. to speak

  739. prophetic truth

  740. about God

  741. and about His salvation.

  742. That all of our lips

  743. would begin

  744. to bear witness

  745. to Jesus

  746. that we

  747. in our own generation

  748. would declare

  749. the mighty works

  750. of God.

  751. And we would proclaim

  752. that wonderful word

  753. of the gospel

  754. and that we would

  755. boldly go public

  756. with the good news

  757. and share the knowledge

  758. that we've been given

  759. of God the Father

  760. through His Son

  761. that's kindled

  762. by the Holy Spirit.

  763. What a treasure

  764. the church has.

  765. And Joel tells us

  766. that it doesn't matter

  767. if you're young

  768. and in middle school

  769. or high school.

  770. It doesn't matter

  771. if you're old

  772. in your 80s

  773. or your 90s.

  774. It doesn't matter

  775. if you're rich

  776. and at the end

  777. of your life

  778. it doesn't matter

  779. if you're poor

  780. and you're a grad student

  781. living on refried beans

  782. or whatever it is

  783. you eat.

  784. It doesn't matter

  785. if you're male

  786. or female.

  787. It doesn't matter

  788. if you're African,

  789. Asian,

  790. Latino,

  791. or European.

  792. It doesn't matter

  793. if you're a lay person

  794. or you're an ordained person.

  795. The Holy Spirit

  796. wants to enable

  797. each and every one of you

  798. to know the Lord

  799. and to know

  800. His prophetic word.

  801. And the Holy Spirit

  802. wants to make all of us

  803. into a prophetic community,

  804. a witnessing community

  805. that makes the Lord known.

  806. And so friends,

  807. if your heart is open

  808. and humble

  809. and repentant

  810. and believing,

  811. the Holy Spirit

  812. who reveals

  813. His prophetic truth

  814. can come in

  815. and make you

  816. a mouthpiece

  817. of that truth.

  818. He can come

  819. and He can make you

  820. an ambassador

  821. of the truth

  822. of the gospel

  823. to your friends

  824. and neighbors

  825. and coworkers

  826. and family members.

  827. This is the prophecy

  828. of the Spirit

  829. and we've talked about

  830. the signs of the Spirit.

  831. I want to say a word

  832. about the new life

  833. of the Spirit

  834. because some of you

  835. may be wondering

  836. about the second part

  837. of Joel's prophecy

  838. and all these strange things,

  839. the blood and the fire

  840. and the billows of smoke

  841. which comes up quite a lot

  842. in the prophets

  843. when you read the prophets.

  844. What in the world

  845. is going on here?

  846. Well, let's read it

  847. in verse 19.

  848. It says,

  849. I will show wonders

  850. in the heaven above

  851. and signs on the earth below,

  852. blood and fire

  853. and billows of smoke.

  854. The sun will be turned

  855. to darkness

  856. and the moon to blood

  857. before the coming

  858. of the great

  859. and glorious day

  860. of the Lord.

  861. These wonders

  862. and these signs

  863. are not only

  864. literal natural phenomena

  865. but they represent

  866. earth-shattering events,

  867. right?

  868. Things that would shake

  869. any society

  870. at her foundations

  871. and bring about

  872. among the people

  873. a sense of instability

  874. and uncertainty.

  875. For example,

  876. if you were to see

  877. the creator of the cosmos

  878. nailed on a cross

  879. and if in that moment

  880. the sky turned dark

  881. for three hours,

  882. that should be a sign to you.

  883. If three days later

  884. you found a tomb

  885. that was emptied out

  886. and you met a man

  887. who was walking around

  888. no longer dead but alive,

  889. that should be a sign

  890. and a wonder to you.

  891. It should indicate

  892. something to you

  893. that what the prophet Joel said

  894. is now coming true

  895. that the great

  896. and glorious day

  897. of the Lord,

  898. the day of Yahweh,

  899. the day of His salvation

  900. has come.

  901. That the long-awaited

  902. day of the Lord

  903. has arrived

  904. and Jesus

  905. our crucified

  906. yet risen Lord,

  907. ascended into heaven

  908. pouring out

  909. the Holy Spirit.

  910. And verse 21 says,

  911. everyone who calls

  912. on the name of the Lord

  913. will be saved.

  914. Will be saved.

  915. And the question is

  916. saved from what?

  917. Saved into what?

  918. I think many of us know

  919. the message of the Scriptures

  920. is that we're saved

  921. out of our sin

  922. and our death.

  923. We're saved

  924. out of judgment.

  925. We're saved out of

  926. being eternally separated

  927. from God.

  928. But what are we saved into?

  929. What's the new life

  930. that we're saved into?

  931. The Holy Spirit

  932. saves us into

  933. a new life.

  934. And that life,

  935. I think,

  936. is beautifully summarized

  937. by the Apostle Paul

  938. in Galatians 4, 6.

  939. He says,

  940. God sent the Spirit

  941. of His Son

  942. into our hearts,

  943. the Spirit

  944. who calls out,

  945. Abba, Father.

  946. God sent the Spirit

  947. of His Son

  948. into our hearts,

  949. the Spirit

  950. who calls out,

  951. Abba, Father.

  952. That's what happened

  953. to you

  954. when you became

  955. a Christian.

  956. The Holy Spirit

  957. breathed new life

  958. into you.

  959. The Holy Spirit

  960. came and made you

  961. a new creature

  962. and He adopted you

  963. as a son

  964. or a daughter

  965. of God the Father

  966. and He enabled you

  967. to say the name

  968. that Jesus uses

  969. for God,

  970. Abba, Father.

  971. The Holy Spirit

  972. saves you

  973. into a new life

  974. of relationship

  975. with God Himself.

  976. But the Holy Spirit

  977. also saves you

  978. into new relationships

  979. with the family

  980. of God.

  981. And the Apostle Paul

  982. goes on in Galatians 5

  983. and he says,

  984. when the Holy Spirit

  985. comes into your life

  986. and He saves you

  987. into this new life,

  988. you should expect

  989. for the Holy Spirit

  990. to begin to grow up

  991. some new fruit in you.

  992. The new fruit

  993. in your relationships

  994. with your church family.

  995. And you should begin

  996. to see as a result

  997. of the Holy Spirit's

  998. work in your life

  999. more of God's love

  1000. toward your sisters

  1001. and brothers in Christ.

  1002. More and more

  1003. of God's joy

  1004. and His peace

  1005. in your sibling relationships

  1006. with one another.

  1007. More and more

  1008. of the forbearance

  1009. of God

  1010. and the kindness

  1011. of God

  1012. toward one another.

  1013. More and more

  1014. of the goodness

  1015. of God

  1016. expressed in good works

1017. to build one another up.

  1018. You should be expecting

  1019. to see more faithfulness

  1020. in your life

  1021. and more gentleness

  1022. in your life

  1023. toward other people

  1024. in the church.

1025. He says you should expect

  1026. to find yourself

  1027. more in control

  1028. of yourself

  1029. so that you begin

  1030. to value others

  1031. as greater than yourself

1032. and begin to serve others

  1033. as more important

  1034. than yourself.

1035. This is the new life

  1036. that the Holy Spirit

  1037. saves us into.

  1038. And as Joel says

  1039. and as Peter says,

  1040. everyone who calls

  1041. on the name

  1042. of the Lord Jesus

  1043. will be saved

  1044. by the Holy Spirit

  1045. into a new life

  1046. with God the Father.

1047. Saved into a new relationship

  1048. where we can say

  1049. on a daily basis,

  1050. Abba, Father.

  1051. Saved into the life

  1052. of a community

  1053. that's bursting

  1054. with the fruit

  1055. of the Holy Spirit

1056. that we did not have

  1057. in our lives before.

  1058. it's an amazing

  1059. new life.

  1060. Well, we've seen

1061. the signs of the Spirit,

  1062. the prophecy

  1063. of the Spirit.

1064. We've seen the new life

  1065. that the Spirit

  1066. saves us into.

  1067. And I should probably

  1068. close this sermon here

  1069. but I've sensed

  1070. all week

  1071. that I should say

  1072. a word about

  1073. the fullness

  1074. of the Spirit.

  1075. And I'll just close

  1076. by talking about

  1077. the fullness

  1078. of the Spirit.

  1079. If you're a Christian,

  1080. you have received

  1081. the Holy Spirit.

  1082. You have received

  1083. God's initiatory

  1084. once for all

  1085. unrepeatable gift

  1086. of the baptism

  1087. of the Spirit

  1088. that came

  1089. on that day

  1090. at Pentecost

  1091. and that gift

  1092. of the Spirit

  1093. can never be taken

  1094. away from you.

  1095. However,

  1096. I think it's important

  1097. to say that God

  1098. intends

  1099. for you to be

  1100. continuously

  1101. and increasingly

  1102. maintaining

  1103. the fullness

  1104. of the Spirit.

  1105. And this is what

  1106. the Apostle Paul

  1107. says in Ephesians 5,

  1108. 18.

  1109. He says,

  1110. Go on

  1111. being filled

  1112. with the Spirit.

  1113. He says that

  1114. to the whole church,

1115. every single one of you.

  1116. Go on

  1117. being filled

  1118. with the Spirit.

  1119. And that's not

  1120. a tentative suggestion.

  1121. It's not a mild

  1122. recommendation.

  1123. It's not even

  1124. a polite piece

  1125. of advice.

  1126. It's an imperative.

  1127. It's a command

  1128. that comes

  1129. from Christ

  1130. with all of His

  1131. authority.

  1132. Go on

  1133. being filled

  1134. with the Holy Spirit.

  1135. It's not optional

  1136. for a Christian.

  1137. It's obligatory.

  1138. And

  1139. all of us

  1140. are to

  1141. continue

  1142. seeking

  1143. the Spirit's

  1144. fullness

  1145. in our lives.

  1146. And how do we

  1147. do that?

  1148. Well,

  1149. it's fascinating

  1150. that

  1151. the Apostle Paul

  1152. is writing

  1153. to a church

  1154. that

  1155. is filled

  1156. with Spirit-born

  1157. Christians.

  1158. Everyone

  1159. has been given

  1160. the gift

  1161. of the Holy Spirit,

  1162. but he's telling them,

  1163. go on being filled

  1164. with the Spirit.

  1165. This is not

  1166. a one-and-done

  1167. filling,

  1168. but it's a regular

  1169. pattern of,

  1170. as the Apostle says,

  1171. continually

  1172. be being filled

  1173. with the Holy Spirit.

  1174. And I think

  1175. this is important

  1176. to say because

  1177. it's possible

  1178. and it's all

  1179. too pitifully

  1180. common

  1181. for Christians

  1182. who are baptized

  1183. with the Spirit

  1184. to cease

  1185. to be filled

  1186. with the Spirit.

  1187. And when we

  1188. cease to be filled

  1189. with the Spirit,

  1190. we lose

  1191. the holiness

  1192. of life

  1193. and we lose

  1194. the boldness

  1195. of testimony

  1196. that we're meant

  1197. to have.

  1198. You know,

  1199. we can grieve

  1200. the Holy Spirit.

  1201. We can

  1202. so fill

  1203. ourselves up

  1204. with things

  1205. other than the Spirit.

  1206. We can fill

  1207. ourselves up

  1208. with sin.

  1209. We can fill

  1210. our lives

  1211. up with unbelief.

  1212. We can fill

  1213. ourselves up

  1214. with disobedience

  1215. so that there's

  1216. no room

  1217. for the Holy Spirit.

  1218. And

  1219. when we do

  1220. this,

  1221. we find ourselves

  1222. living our

  1223. Christian lives

  1224. on a lower level

  1225. than our

  1226. Spirit baptism

  1227. has made possible

  1228. because we're

  1229. not remaining

  1230. filled

  1231. with the Spirit.

  1232. You know,

  1233. if that's you

  1234. today,

  1235. and I imagine

  1236. it's maybe

  1237. more than one

  1238. of us,

  1239. if you want

  1240. to remain

  1241. filled with

  1242. the Holy Spirit,

  1243. you've got

  1244. to be doing

  1245. what these

  1246. 120 men

  1247. and women

  1248. were doing

  1249. when the

  1250. day of

  1251. Pentecost

  1252. came and

  1253. the Holy Spirit

  1254. was poured

  1255. out.

  1256. And what

  1257. were they

  1258. doing?

  1259. It says

  1260. in Acts

  1261. 1.14,

  1262. they were

  1263. praying

  1264. together

  1265. in unified

  1266. prayer for

  1267. the Holy Spirit.

  1268. it says

  1269. that they

  1270. were praying

  1271. constantly

  1272. in persevering

  1273. prayer,

  1274. we are not

  1275. going to

  1276. stop praying

  1277. until you

  1278. fill us

  1279. with the

  1280. Holy Spirit.

  1281. Jesus said

  1282. explicitly,

  1283. if you ask

  1284. your Father

  1285. in heaven,

  1286. He will

  1287. give the

  1288. Holy Spirit

  1289. to anyone

  1290. who asks

  1291. Him.

  1292. And so,

  1293. I just want

  1294. to encourage

  1295. some of you,

  1296. if you have

  1297. not yet found

  1298. a group

  1299. here at Christ

  1300. Church,

  1301. if you have

  1302. not yet

  1303. found a

  1304. spiritual

  1305. friend,

  1306. if you have

  1307. not yet

  1308. found a

  1309. mentor,

  1310. who can

  1311. help you

  1312. pray in

  1313. the Spirit

  1314. and pray

  1315. for the

  1316. Spirit to

  1317. make that

  1318. the highest

  1319. priority

  1320. in this

  1321. week and

  1322. in this

  1323. month ahead,

  1324. I want to

  1325. encourage you

  1326. to find that

  1327. person and

  1328. to find those

  1329. people and

  1330. say to them,

  1331. will you

  1332. please help

  1333. me pray

  1334. for the

  1335. continuous

  1336. and increasing

  1337. fullness of the

  1338. Spirit in my

  1339. life?

  1340. Because if

  1341. that's possible

  1342. for me,

  1343. that's what I

  1344. want.

  1345. And leaders

  1346. of our groups,

  1347. I want to

  1348. encourage you to

  1349. take the time

  1350. this week to

  1351. just pause and

  1352. do something

  1353. different this

  1354. week and that

  1355. is just pray

  1356. for the coming

  1357. of the Holy

  1358. Spirit.

  1359. Pray for the

  1360. fullness of

  1361. the Spirit.

  1362. Friends,

  1363. let's do this

  1364. in the name of

  1365. the Father,

  1366. Son,

  1367. and Holy

  1368. Spirit.

  1369. Amen.
