  4. Good morning, everybody. I'm Shantanez, Shantanez Jacob, and I'm going to read with you today from the Acts of the Apostle, chapter 1, verse 8, then verse 14, and 36-42 of chapter 2.

  5. Let us begin now.

  6. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

  7. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  8. Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd.

  9. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this.

  10. God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

  11. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  12. Brothers, what shall we do?

  13. Peter replied, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  14. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  15. With many other words he warned them, and he pleaded with them, save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

  16. Those who accept his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  17. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teachings and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

  18. This is the word of our Lord.

  19. You may be seated.

  20. Well, it's been said already, but happy Pentecost Sunday, Christ Church.

  21. Today, we are joining together with the global church, every tribe, language, people, and nation, to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  22. When Jesus was resurrected, and he was enthroned at God's right hand, he poured out the Holy Spirit to put new life, to put the divine life of God in our souls,

  23. and to empower us across all of our differences to be the one family of the Father, and to be witnesses of Jesus.

  24. That's what Pentecost is about.

  25. And, you know, at Christmas, God proved that he's with us.

  26. At Easter, God proved that he's for us.

  27. And at Pentecost, God proves that he's in us.

  28. And how amazing would it be if we came up with some new and creative ways to celebrate this amazing gift of Pentecost,

  29. the way we celebrate Christmas, and the way we celebrate Easter.

  30. So I want to invite us to open our pew Bible today.

  31. You've heard this text read, but on page 888, you'll see that this is not a floating text without any context.

  32. And page 888, we've been slowly just exploring Acts chapter 1 and chapter 2,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  33. because we want to better know and we want to better experience the person and the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit.

  34. And we want to be able to answer this question,

  35. what does the Holy Spirit do to make a person a Christian?

  36. And having made a person a Christian, what does the Holy Spirit do when he fills that Christian with himself,

  37. when he fills a collective group of Christians, the church, with himself?

  38. And what I want to do today is talk about four things.

  39. I want to talk about how God calls you, God baptizes you, God saves you, and God adds you.

  40. Okay, God calls you, he baptizes you, he saves you, and he adds you.

  41. And I want to start with God, how God calls you.

  42. And I want to bring us to verse 38, where Peter replied,

  43. after having preached this first Christian sermon ever, on the day of Pentecost,

  44. he replied,

  45. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins,

  46. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  47. The promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off,

  48. for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  49. And if you want to underline that last phrase, you can.

  50. For all whom the Lord our God will call.

  51. A Christian is someone who's been called by God.

  52. If you're a Christian, you know that God has called you by name into a living relationship with himself.

  53. And how does God call us?

  54. Well, he calls us in the same way that he called those people on the day of Pentecost.

  55. God poured out his Holy Spirit, and that Spirit is a Spirit of truth.

  56. And so the Spirit of truth spoke through Peter's exposition of the Bible.

  57. The Spirit spoke through Peter's exposition of the Gospel,

  58. and led them into the truth about Jesus.

  59. The truth of his life, the truth of his death, the truth of his resurrection.

  60. And the Spirit was driving the words of the prophets.

  61. He was driving the words of this apostle into the minds, and into the hearts,

  62. and into the wills of everyone who was listening.

  63. That's how God was calling them.

  64. And when God calls us, the first thing he does is he causes us to think.

  65. Right?

  66. In verse 36, it says that,

  67. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this.

  68. God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

  69. The Holy Spirit caused them to start thinking with their minds about Jesus.

  70. And the Holy Spirit caused them to engage with the objective historical facts of the person and the work of Jesus.

  71. And the logic of Peter's sermon, because of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit,

  72. it began to work in their minds.

  73. And they said to themselves,

  74. Hmm, okay, if God raised Jesus to life,

  75. if God made this Jesus whom we crucified, both Lord and King,

  76. then we are in deep trouble.

  77. Why?

  78. Because we crucified him.

  79. And we live in a world that when God comes in the flesh,

  80. it crucifies him.

  81. And they realized that,

  82. Oh my goodness,

  83. this whole time I've been neglecting and ignoring Jesus.

  84. I've been thinking that I had no need of Jesus.

  85. I've been completely unconcerned about Jesus.

  86. And they realized that if I've not actually accepted Jesus,

  87. then I've been rejecting the one that God approves and that God raised and that God has exalted.

  88. And it says in verse 37 that when the people heard this,

  89. what happened?

  90. Well, God began,

  91. God's call began to work through their minds down into their hearts.

  92. And it says they were cut to the heart.

  93. They were convicted.

  94. They were disturbed.

  95. They were caused to feel this intense inner pain that we talked about last week.

  96. They were made uncomfortable and they began to grieve.

  97. Why?

  98. Because they realize,

  99. again,

  100. if I've been stiff-arming Jesus,

  101. that means I've actually been stiff-arming God.

  102. And you see,

  103. the Spirit of God is applying the Word of God to their minds and to their hearts.

  104. And they experience pain because they realize,

  105. we treated God's Messiah so unjustly.

  106. They realize that if we've hurt Jesus,

  107. we've actually hurt his Father.

  108. And they realize that,

  109. oh my goodness,

  110. our greatest need

  111. and our greatest sin

  112. is that we failed to see our need of Jesus.

  113. We thought so little of Jesus.

  114. And it caused them to cry out for help.

  115. And they say,

  116. brothers,

  117. what shall we do?

  118. And doing is about the will,

  119. right?

  120. So God's call to these people in the gospel

  121. has penetrated their minds and their thinking.

  122. And it's gone down into their hearts

  123. and their desiring.

  124. And now it's getting down into their wills

  125. and their doing.

  126. And they say,

  127. what shall we do?

  128. What should we stop doing?

  129. What should we start doing?

  130. They realize this truth of Hebrews 9.27

  131. that says,

  132. people are destined to die once

  133. and after that to face judgment.

  134. And they realize that we need to be rescued

  135. from the judgment of God.

  136. We need to be reconciled

  137. in a relationship with God.

  138. They say,

  139. we absolutely do not want to be separated from God

  140. and to go on into an eternity

  141. of ever increasing misery.

  142. And if we don't do something different

  143. than what we're doing now,

  144. that's what's going to happen to us.

  145. But rather they say,

  146. we want to be with God.

  147. We want to enjoy the pleasures of God

  148. for all eternity.

  149. And so they cry out,

  150. brothers,

  151. what shall we do?

  152. So what's happening on the day of Pentecost

  153. is that this community

  154. of 120 Christian disciples,

  155. they're bearing witness

  156. to these 3,000 people about Jesus.

  157. A crowd of more than 3,000 people,

  158. but to these 3,000 in particular.

  159. And through the witness of

  160. this spirit-filled,

  161. spirit-empowered church,

  162. God is calling these 3,000 people

  163. out of condemnation

  164. and into a reconciled relationship

  165. with himself.

  166. So let's pause here

  167. for some brief application.

  168. Some of us are here

  169. and we're exploring Christianity.

  170. And what I want you to hear

  171. is that God is calling

  172. these 3,000 people

  173. to come home to him.

  174. Right?

  175. Just like that prodigal son

  176. in Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  177. This young man

  178. who turned his back on the father.

  179. He went off to a far country

  180. and he plunged himself

  181. into a life of self-centeredness

  182. where he just did everything

  183. that he wanted to do.

  184. And one day he got down

  185. to the very bottom of his misery

  186. and he came to his senses

  187. and he remembered his father.

  188. He remembered,

  189. oh my goodness,

  190. my father is rich

  191. and my father is generous

  192. and if I just turn back

  193. to my father,

  194. everything may be okay.

  195. And so he turns

  196. and he realizes

  197. as he's walking up the road

  198. to go home

  199. that this whole time

  200. the father's been looking for him,

  201. the father's been calling him

  202. and the father's now running to him

  203. to embrace him

  204. and bring him home.

  205. And if you are hearing

  206. the external call

  207. of the gospel

  208. in your mind

  209. and if you are sensing

  210. the internal call

  211. of the father

  212. in your heart,

  213. then your next move,

  214. your next step

  215. is to answer that call

  216. with your will

  217. to do something different

  218. and that is to turn home

  219. to your father

  220. and to his embrace.

  221. And to apply this for you,

  222. if you identify yourself

  223. as a Christian,

  224. I want you to know

  225. that this call of God

  226. is a powerful call.

  227. That when he calls you,

  228. he's exercising

  229. and manifesting

  230. the same power

  231. that he exhibited

  232. in the creation

  233. of the universe

  234. and in the resurrection

  235. of Jesus.

  236. And here's how

  237. the New Testament

  238. describes this powerful

  239. calling of God.

  240. It says,

  241. Peter,

  242. who's giving this sermon,

  243. says in his first epistle,

  244. he says,

  245. God called you

  246. out of darkness

  247. into his wonderful light.

  248. The God of all grace

  249. called you

  250. to his eternal glory

  251. in Christ.

  252. The apostle Paul

  253. says to the Thessalonians,

  254. he says,

  255. God calls you

  256. into his kingdom

  257. and glory.

  258. He called you

  259. through our gospel

  260. that you might share

  261. in the glory

  262. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  263. And so the question

  264. for you is,

  265. has that powerful call

  266. happened to you?

  267. Have you been called

  268. out of darkness

  269. and into his wonderful light?

  270. Has God called you

  271. by his grace

  272. into his eternal kingdom

  273. to share with you

  274. the glory

  275. and the honor

  276. and the majesty

  277. and the beauty

  278. of Jesus?

  279. Because that's what

  280. a Christian is.

  281. A Christian is a person

  282. who knows

  283. that they've experienced

  284. this powerful call

  285. of God.

  286. But it's more than that.

  287. God not only calls you

  288. but God baptizes you.

  289. God baptizes you.

  290. If we can go back

  291. to verse 38,

  292. it says,

  293. Peter replied,

  294. repent and be baptized

  295. every one of you

  296. in the name of Jesus Christ

  297. for the forgiveness

  298. of your sins

  299. and you will receive

  300. the gift

  301. of the Holy Spirit.

  302. See,

  303. Peter's describing

  304. what is involved

  305. in being joined

  306. to this community

  307. of Jesus

  308. that's had the life

  309. and the power of God

  310. poured into it

  311. by the Holy Spirit.

  312. And he's telling us

  313. what's involved

  314. in this tremendous change

  315. that takes place

  316. within us

  317. and how this inward change

  318. begins to show itself

  319. outwardly

  320. in our lives.

  321. And Peter's saying

  322. that this Jesus

  323. who God raised

  324. from the dead,

  325. right,

  326. this Jesus who God

  327. exalted to his throne,

  328. this Jesus who God

  329. now calls

  330. Lord and Messiah,

  331. he's there

  332. and he's actually

  333. making both promises

  334. and demands.

  335. And what are his promises?

  336. Well,

  337. he promises forgiveness

  338. and the freedom

  339. that comes with forgiveness

  340. and he promises

  341. the Holy Spirit

  342. and the power

  343. that comes

  344. with the Spirit.

  345. To be forgiven

  346. is our greatest need

  347. and it's the thing

  348. that we cannot do

  349. for ourselves.

  350. Right,

  351. all the stuff

  352. that you've done

  353. and that you said

  354. and that you've thought

  355. of which you're

  356. totally ashamed

  357. and would want

  358. no one to know about.

  359. All the things

  360. that you've failed to do

  361. and failed to say

  362. and failed to think

  363. of which you are guilty,

  364. it's possible

  365. to be released

  366. from all of that.

  367. And that's the great message

  368. of the Christian gospel

  369. that Jesus

  370. bore

  371. the condemnation

  372. that we deserve

  373. so that we could

  374. receive the forgiveness

  375. that we do

  376. not deserve.

  377. And he came

  378. to liberate us

  379. from our shame

  380. and from our guilt

  381. and from the penalty

  382. of our sins.

  383. And again,

  384. this is how Peter

  385. puts it in his first letter.

  386. He says in 1 Peter 1,

  387. you were redeemed

  388. with the precious blood

  389. of Christ,

  390. a lamb without blemish

  391. or defect.

  392. He himself

  393. bore

  394. our sins

  395. in his body

  396. on the cross

  397. so that we might

  398. die to sins

  399. and live to righteousness.

  400. By his wounds

  401. you have been

  402. healed.

  403. the first promise

  404. that Jesus makes

  405. from his throne

  406. in heaven

  407. is that you can be

  408. forgiven of your sin.

  409. The second promise

  410. that he makes

  411. is that you can have

  412. the Holy Spirit

  413. living within you.

  414. That the Holy Spirit

  415. can come into your heart

  416. and when he gets

  417. into your heart

  418. he regenerates you.

  419. He gives you,

  420. he brings about

  421. a new birth.

  422. He plants the life

  423. of God

  424. in your soul

  425. and he makes you

  426. a new creature

  427. and he causes

  428. the presence of God

  429. and the power

  430. of God

  431. to permanently

  432. reside

  433. within you.

  434. And so the question

  435. for you is

  436. do you have

  437. this promised

  438. freedom of forgiveness

  439. and this promised

  440. power

  441. of the Holy Spirit

  442. that Jesus

  443. has promised to us?

  444. But you see,

  445. Jesus doesn't

  446. just make promises.

  447. The resurrected Lord

  448. from his heavenly throne

  449. he also makes demands.

  450. And what are his demands?

  451. Well, it says

  452. in verse 38

  453. Peter replies

  454. speaking for Jesus

  455. he says repent

  456. and be baptized

  457. every one of you

  458. in the name

  459. of Jesus Christ.

  460. And we talked about

  461. this word last week

  462. repentance

  463. metanoia

  464. metanoeo

  465. means to change

  466. your mind entirely.

  467. To have a radical

  468. about turn

  469. in your attitude.

  470. gratitude.

  471. To repent

  472. is to

  473. turn

  474. your allegiance

  475. away from

  476. yourself

  477. and away

  478. from your sin

  479. and away

  480. from all of your

  481. God substitutes.

  482. And repentance

  483. is always combined

  484. with faith

  485. and with trust.

  486. It's turning away

  487. and turning toward

  488. and faith

  489. is implicit here.

  490. There's no possibility

  491. of turning

  492. from sin

  493. negatively

  494. unless we turn

  495. to Jesus

  496. positively.

  497. and this

  498. double turn

  499. from sin

  500. to Jesus

  501. from self

  502. to the living

  503. God

  504. that's what we call

  505. conversion.

  506. And it's such a radical

  507. turning away

  508. from ourselves

  509. and a turning

  510. toward God

  511. that it bears

  512. fruit

  513. in changed

  514. behavior.

  515. So that people

  516. who previously

  517. repudiated

  518. God's Messiah

  519. are now brought

  520. to a place

  521. where they publicly

  522. affirm their

  523. dependence on Jesus

  524. by undergoing

  525. baptism

  526. in his name.

  527. Be baptized

  528. every one of you

  529. in the name

  530. of Jesus

  531. Peter says.

  532. The New Testament

  533. knows

  534. of no

  535. unbaptized

  536. believers.

  537. Baptism

  538. is the means

  539. and the medium

  540. by which

  541. the promises

  542. of Jesus

  543. and the demands

  544. of Jesus

  545. are expressed

  546. in our lives.

  547. Baptism

  548. is how we publicly

  549. demonstrate

  550. our repentance

  551. and our faith.

  552. And baptism

  553. is this outward

  554. visible public

  555. act

  556. symbolizing

  557. the washing

  558. away

  559. and the forgiveness

  560. of sin

  561. the pouring out

  562. of the presence

  563. and power

  564. of the Holy Spirit

  565. are being united

  566. to the death

  567. and the resurrection

  568. of Jesus.

  569. We say

  570. when we baptize you

  571. you've been buried

  572. with Christ

  573. in baptism

  574. and raised

  575. with him

  576. to walk

  577. in newness

  578. of life.

  579. Baptism

  580. is humbly

  581. submitting

  582. to

  583. a name

  584. and to

  585. an authority

  586. that's symbolized

  587. by that name

  588. into which

  589. you are being baptized.

  590. It's a change

  591. of your identity

  592. and a change

  593. of your allegiance.

  594. It's saying

  595. to the world

  596. and to yourself

  597. I'm under new management.

  598. I have a new Lord.

  599. I'm no longer

  600. identified

  601. primarily

  602. with my own name.

  603. I'm no longer

  604. Jonathan

  605. as it were.

  606. I'm no longer

  607. identified

  608. primarily

  609. with my agenda

  610. and my will

  611. for my life.

  612. Rather

  613. he's my new identity

  614. and his agenda

  615. is my agenda.

  616. This is where

  617. some churches go

  618. amen

  619. just a little

  620. amen.

  621. Just for some

  622. application

  623. if you're exploring

  624. Christianity

  625. have you considered

  626. that

  627. the freedom

  628. and the power

  629. that your heart

  630. wants

  631. the freedom

  632. and the power

  633. that

  634. you're spending

  635. your time

  636. and your energy

  637. and money

  638. trying to

  639. get for yourself

  640. through your work

  641. and your career

  642. through your success

  643. and your financial

  644. security

  645. through friendship

  646. and romance

  647. through your family

  648. through your kids

  649. through new adventures

  650. and travel

  651. and experiences

  652. that none

  653. of these

  654. are going

  655. to be

  656. enough for you

  657. in this life

  658. and they're

  659. certainly not

  660. going to be

  661. enough for you

  662. in the life

  663. to come.

  664. There's a freedom

  665. and there's a power

  666. that your heart

  667. desires

  668. that only Jesus

  669. can give to you.

  670. The freedom

  671. of divine forgiveness

  672. the freedom

  673. of living

  674. in a reconciled

  675. relationship

  676. with the living God.

  677. the power

  678. of divine

  679. indwelling

  680. the power

  681. of having

  682. God

  683. the Holy Spirit

  684. permanently

  685. residing

  686. within you

  687. your heart

  688. will forever

  689. remain restless

  690. and will keep

  691. restlessly searching

  692. for freedom

  693. and for power

  694. that this world

  695. simply promises

  696. to you

  697. but will not

  698. give you.

  699. And Peter says

  700. that this freedom

  701. and this power

  702. it's yours

  703. for the taking.

  704. It's a free

  705. gift

  706. that all you

  707. have to do

  708. he says

  709. is just

  710. change your

  711. mind.

  712. Stop putting

  713. your faith

  714. in yourself

  715. start putting

  716. your faith

  717. in Jesus

  718. and start saying

  719. you know what

  720. you're my Lord

  721. and you're my King

  722. that's your next

  723. move.

  724. But secondly

  725. if you're a Christian

  726. to apply this

  727. to you

  728. do you understand

  729. what it means

  730. to be baptized?

  731. Do you understand

  732. what it means

  733. to be a baptized

  734. Christian?

  735. And here are

  736. some tests.

  737. Are you going

  738. to him

  739. daily

  740. the one

  741. in whose name

  742. you've been baptized

  743. are you going

  744. to him daily

  745. and saying

  746. Jesus

  747. would you please

  748. apply to me

  749. the freedom

  750. of the forgiveness

  751. that you offer?

  752. I'm not living

  753. in freedom.

  754. Were you going

  755. to him

  756. on a daily basis

  757. and saying

  758. Jesus

  759. please refill

  760. me with the power

  761. of the Holy Spirit?

  762. I want to live

  763. in the power

  764. of the Holy Spirit.

  765. Are you

  766. going to the throne

  767. of grace

  768. with confidence

  769. so that you may

  770. receive mercy

  771. and find grace

  772. to help you

  773. in your time

  774. of need?

  775. Is your prayer life

  776. evidence that you

  777. have received

  778. these heavenly promises

  779. and that your baptism

  780. is expressing itself

  781. in your life?

  782. And we need to remember

  783. that for these

  784. 3,000 converts

  785. in Jerusalem

  786. on the day

  787. of Pentecost

  788. and for many

  789. of our brothers

  790. and sisters

  791. around the world

  792. in the global church

  793. today

  794. being baptized

  795. meant risking

  796. everything.

  797. It meant being

  798. separated from

  799. your nearest

  800. and dearest

  801. relatives.

  802. It meant being

  803. renounced by

  804. your family.

  805. It meant being

  806. ostracized by

  807. society.

  808. It meant that

  809. people began

  810. to despise you

  811. and no longer

  812. want to do

  813. business with you

  814. or have anything

  815. to do with you.

  816. Sometimes it meant

  817. going to prison.

  818. Sometimes it meant

  819. dying for your faith

  820. to be baptized

  821. was a costly thing.

  822. And I wonder

  823. if sometimes

  824. we forget

  825. our baptisms.

  826. I wonder

  827. if we love

  828. the one

  829. in whose name

  830. we've been baptized

  831. so much

  832. that we'd be

  833. willing to experience

  834. discomfort

  835. and inconvenience

  836. for his sake.

  837. I wonder

  838. if we take

  839. our relationship

  840. with Jesus

  841. so seriously

  842. like our mothers

  843. and fathers

  844. in the faith

  845. that we're willing

  846. to suffer

  847. for him

  848. and even

  849. to die for him.

  850. That's what

  851. baptism

  852. represents.

  853. Dying with Christ.

  854. Being raised

  855. with Christ.

  856. Repent and be

  857. baptized every

  858. single one of you

  859. Peter says.

  860. But God not only

  861. calls you

  862. and not only

  863. baptizes you

  864. but God saves you.

  865. And look at

  866. verse 40.

  867. It says

  868. with many other

  869. words he warned

  870. them and he pleaded

  871. with them

  872. save yourselves

  873. from this corrupt

  874. generation.

  875. Jesus trained

  876. Peter for three

  877. years.

  878. He equipped

  879. Peter.

  880. He authorized

  881. Peter

  882. as his apostle

  883. to say things

  884. like this.

  885. Right?

  886. To speak

  887. words that not

  888. everybody

  889. necessarily wanted

  890. to hear.

  891. And what's Peter

  892. pleading with them

  893. to do?

  894. He says save

  895. yourselves from

  896. this corrupt

  897. generation.

  898. Save yourselves

  899. from this crooked

  900. and twisted

  901. generation.

  902. Some translations

  903. say be saved

  904. from this

  905. generation.

  906. And that's

  907. an equally

  908. legitimate

  909. translation.

  910. Be saved

  911. from this

  912. generation

  913. emphasizes that

  914. salvation is a

  915. rescue operation

  916. initiated and

  917. accomplished by

  918. God and God

  919. alone.

  920. We do not

  921. save ourselves.

  922. God is the

  923. one who saves

  924. us.

  925. And if you look

  926. in your Bible

  927. down at verse

  928. 47 it says

  929. the Lord added

  930. to the church

  931. daily those

  932. who were being

  933. saved.

  934. Saved by who?

  935. Saved by God.

  936. The difference

  937. between a

  938. Christian and a

  939. non-Christian is

  940. that a Christian

  941. is among the

  942. saved and a

  943. non-Christian is

  944. among the

  945. not saved.

  946. And you can

  947. imagine a house

  948. on fire with a

  949. bunch of people

  950. inside of it and

  951. a ladder is put

  952. up to the window

  953. and the firemen

  954. come and there's

  955. a certain number

  956. of people that are

  957. rescued that are

  958. saved.

  959. Out of that

  960. house and then

  961. there are others

  962. who are not.

  963. Or you can

  964. imagine a shipwreck

  965. where some people

  966. are saved to shore

  967. and then others

  968. are not.

  969. Or you can

  970. imagine a

  971. courthouse where

  972. some people are

  973. accused and

  974. they're going to

  975. go home acquitted

  976. and set free but

  977. other people are

  978. not going to go

  979. home.

  980. They're going to

  981. be condemned.

  982. And that's what

  983. Peter means when

  984. he says be saved

  985. from this generation.

  986. A Christian is a

  987. person who has

  988. been saved and is

  989. being saved and

  990. will go on to be

  991. saved.

  992. And that's what the

  993. Apostle Paul means

  994. when he talks about

  995. you've been justified

  996. and you've been

  997. sanctified and you've

  998. been glorified.

  999. A Christian has been

1000. saved and put into a

  1001. totally new position

  1002. and standing where you

  1003. already stand justified

  1004. and righteous before

  1005. God.

  1006. God.

1007. And a Christian is also

  1008. being saved from the

  1009. remnants of sin and

  1010. evil that remain in

  1011. our mortal body.

  1012. We are slowly,

  1013. gradually being prepared

  1014. for the glory into

  1015. which we are going.

  1016. And a Christian will

  1017. one day be saved

  1018. completely,

  1019. delivered from the

  1020. pollution of sin and

1021. the power of death to

  1022. enjoy and to glorify

  1023. God and a resurrected

  1024. body in his new

  1025. creation.

  1026. That's what it means

  1027. for God to sovereignly

  1028. save you from this

  1029. corrupt generation.

  1030. So, is our translation

  1031. correct or incorrect?

  1032. Well, yes.

  1033. It's right.

  1034. Be saved from this

  1035. corrupt generation and

  1036. save yourselves from

  1037. this corrupt generation.

  1038. And when Peter says

  1039. that, he's just quoting

  1040. his Bible.

  1041. He's quoting the

  1042. Torah.

  1043. Deuteronomy 32.5

1044. talks about living in a

  1045. corrupt and warped and

  1046. crooked generation.

1047. And that refers to the

  1048. outlook of humanity

  1049. without reference to God.

  1050. That's what a corrupt

  1051. generation is.

1052. It's how human beings try

  1053. to organize themselves and

1054. their world apart from and

  1055. separate from God.

  1056. And Peter says there's

  1057. something corrupt and

  1058. there's something twisted

  1059. about that approach to

  1060. life.

  1061. It's heading for disaster.

  1062. It's driving over a

  1063. cliff.

  1064. And Peter urges his

  1065. listeners to actively

  1066. separate themselves and

1067. to separate and to set

  1068. themselves apart from this

  1069. corrupt generation.

1070. You have an active and an

  1071. urgent responsibility,

1072. Peter says, to leave this

  1073. human centered and God

  1074. resisting generation with

1075. all of its corrupt views

  1076. of history and its

  1077. corrupt views of the

  1078. self and its corrupt

1079. views of God and its

  1080. corrupt views of Jesus.

1081. And you need to move

  1082. into a new reality.

1083. You need to move into a

  1084. new humanity.

1085. You need to move into a

1086. new creation that has a

  1087. new view of everything.

  1088. God, life, eternity,

  1089. human meaning and

  1090. purpose, all of it.

  1091. In Acts chapter 26,

    Acts 26:18

  1092. verse 18, it says that a

  1093. Christian is somebody who's

  1094. been turned from darkness

1095. to light and from the

1096. power of Satan to God.

1097. The apostle Paul says in

  1098. Colossians 1.13, for God

  1099. has rescued us.

1100. He saved us from the

  1101. dominion of darkness and

1102. he's brought us into the

1103. kingdom of the son that he

  1104. loves.

1105. And it's the question for

1106. us, is it clear that you've

  1107. been saved like that?

  1108. Paul says to the

  1109. Philippians, he says, be

  1110. blameless and pure, children

1111. of God without fault in a

  1112. warped and crooked

  1113. generation.

  1114. These apostles love quoting

  1115. Deuteronomy for some

  1116. reason.

  1117. Be blameless and pure,

  1118. children of God without

1119. fault in a warped and

  1120. crooked generation.

1121. Then you will shine like

1122. stars in the night sky.

1123. Is your life and is your

  1124. conduct a clear

  1125. demonstration?

  1126. Confirmation that you've

1127. been saved, you are being

1128. saved, and you are going

  1129. to be saved.

1130. God calls you, God baptizes

1131. you, God saves you, and a

1132. final word, that God adds

  1133. you.

  1134. God adds you.

  1135. Verse 41, we'll come back

  1136. to this next week.

1137. But it says, those who

  1138. accepted Peter's message were

1139. baptized and about 3,000 were

1140. added to their number that

  1141. day, and they devoted

  1142. themselves to the apostles'

  1143. teaching and to fellowship,

1144. to the breaking of bread, and

  1145. to prayer.

1146. So added to this number of

1147. 120 disciples on the day of

  1148. Pentecost are these 3,000

  1149. newly baptized Christians, and

1150. that means that the Holy

  1151. Spirit multiplied the church

  1152. 26x in one day.

  1153. I'm not a math guy.

  1154. I think that's good.

  1155. 26x, is that good?

  1156. It's good.

1157. So, the New Testament knows

  1158. no unchurched believers.

  1159. They're all immediately

  1160. churched.

1161. Your baptism adds you to the

1162. church, and your baptism adds

1163. you to the distinctive way of

1164. life and devotion in the

  1165. church.

1166. And to be a Christian means

  1167. that you've become a living

1168. member of a living church of

  1169. the living Lord.

1170. And at first, you did not

1171. belong, but now you do

  1172. belong.

1173. And God moved these 3,000

1174. people from one position to

  1175. another.

1176. They were over here, and now

  1177. they're over here.

1178. And look at what happens to

  1179. them.

1180. God causes them to undergo a

  1181. complete change.

  1182. Their thinking, their

  1183. outlooks, their actions are

  1184. totally revolutionized.

1185. They have this new life in

  1186. Christ, and it immediately

  1187. begins to express itself.

1188. And we can see this new life

1189. of God that's been planted

  1190. in their souls being

  1191. expressed in their, the

  1192. quality of their life

  1193. together.

  1194. They gave practical

  1195. demonstration of their faith

  1196. by, it says, devoting

  1197. themselves.

  1198. Or other translations say

  1199. continuing steadfastly.

1200. And again, we'll explore this

1201. in depth next Sunday, but what

1202. does it mean as we close?

  1203. It means that they

  1204. continued together.

1205. These people that have been

  1206. called, that have been

  1207. baptized, that have been

  1208. saved, it means they

  1209. continued together in

  1210. constant devotion.

1211. You could not keep them

  1212. away from each other.

  1213. Their association with other

  1214. Christians was the biggest

  1215. thing in their life.

1216. It was the very center of

  1217. their lives.

1218. And they said, we will not

1219. let any lesser things get

1220. in the way of this main

  1221. thing.

1222. And what are the lesser

  1223. things?

  1224. Well, use your imagination.

1225. What keeps us away on a

  1226. Sunday?

1227. What keeps us away midweek?

1228. A lot of lesser things

  1229. that do not matter.

1230. And they said, we are not

1231. going to let that happen to

  1232. us.

1233. They said, we are going to

  1234. come together, and we'll

  1235. see this next week.

  1236. They came together regularly

1237. and willingly, not just one

  1238. day a week.

1239. It says they came together

  1240. day by day.

1241. They so wanted to be with

1242. each other that they, when

  1243. they finished their day's

1244. work, they'd go to one

  1245. another's houses, and they

1246. would study the Bible, and

  1247. they would pray.

  1248. Why?

  1249. Because they realized that

1250. even though they were from

  1251. different biological families,

1252. they were now part of the

  1253. same spiritual family.

  1254. They shared the same

  1255. spiritual life.

1256. They were born of the same

  1257. spirit.

1258. They were raised with the

  1259. same Christ.

1260. They had the same life of

1261. God the Father in their

  1262. souls.

1263. And they had to express it.

1264. They were rejoicing in the

  1265. same Savior, delighting to

1266. put their trust in the

  1267. apostles' teaching about

  1268. Jesus.

  1269. Delighting to come to

  1270. fellowship in Christ Jesus.

1271. Delighting to come and to

1272. break that bread in communion

  1273. with Christ Jesus.

1274. They were delighting to pray

  1275. prayers directly to Jesus,

1276. directly to the Holy Spirit,

  1277. directly to the Father.

1278. They fixed their eyes on the

  1279. same thing.

1280. Their eyes were fixed together

  1281. on eternity.

  1282. They were preparing themselves

  1283. for the same thing.

1284. They were preparing for the

1285. life of the world to come, to

1286. be ready to live in glory

  1287. everlasting.

1288. That's why they came together

1289. every day and every Sunday.

1290. So the question as we come to

1291. this table, has God called you?

1292. And has God baptized you?

1293. And has God saved you?

1294. And has God added you to his

  1295. devoted and steadfast people?

  1296. And is that obvious?

1297. Is it obvious that you belong

1298. to this God who calls, baptizes,

  1299. saves, and adds?

1300. And that you are a person of

  1301. devotion and steadfast love?

  1302. May it be so.

1303. In the name of the Father, Son,

  1304. and Holy Spirit.

  1305. Amen.

  1306. Amen.
