  5. Good morning and happy Trinity Sunday.

  6. I'm Tonya and I'm a part of the Oikos in the Oaks and the Women Reading Women Friday monthly

  7. book group.

  8. Today's scripture reading is from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 1, verse 8, chapter

  9. 2, verse 14a, and verses 37 through 47 as printed in liturgy.

  10. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

  11. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses

  12. in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  13. Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed the crowd.

  14. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other disciples,

  15. Brothers, what shall we do?

  16. Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for

  17. the forgiveness of your sins.

  18. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, the promises for you and your children

  19. and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  20. With many other words he warned them and he pleaded with them, Save yourselves from this

  21. corrupt generation.

  22. Those who accepted his message were baptized and about three thousand were added to their

  23. number that day.

  24. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and

  25. to prayer.

  26. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

  27. All the believers were together and had everything in common.

  28. They sold property and possessions to give anyone who had need.

  29. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.

  30. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God

  31. and enjoying the favor of all the people.

  32. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  33. This is the word of the Lord.

  34. Thanks be to God.

  35. Thank you, Tonya, for that reading.

  36. Well, we're considering the question, what is the Christian church?

  37. What is the church's nature?

  38. What's the church's message?

  39. What's the church's mission?

  40. Who are Christians?

  41. What are they supposed to do?

  42. If we want to know the answers to those questions, we need to look at the origins of the church.

  43. We need to go back to the beginning and discover how the church started, what the church did.

  44. And what do we find in the Acts of the Apostles?

  45. We've been just kind of marinating in this text for several weeks now.

  46. What we find is really the only divinely inspired authoritative account of the Christian church.

  47. If you want to know the identity of the church, the task of the church, the character of the church's proclamation,

  48. you need to look at the Acts of the Apostles and the letters of the Apostles in the New Testament.

  49. Because here we have an authoritative statement about what Christianity is and what it really means to be a Christian.

  50. This is God's blueprint for the church.

  51. And it's not just an exercise in theory.

  52. It's a blueprint against which we can test ourselves and we can examine ourselves.

  53. And we can make sure that we're Christians.

  54. We can look at these marks and characteristics of the Christian church and what it's meant to be.

  55. And we can ask, am I like that?

  56. Are we like that?

  57. Do we conform to this pattern that they've set?

  58. Is this true of us?

  59. Is this the sort of thing that we do and are planning to do?

  60. G.K. Chesterton once wrote, he said,

  61. Christianity has not been tried and found wanting.

  62. It has been found difficult and not tried.

  63. And so what we want to do is explore this difficult thing called Christianity.

  64. And we want to try to do it.

  65. And so we want to ask the question today, what are the marks of a healthy church?

  66. What are the marks of a living church?

  67. And I want to talk about five things today.

  68. And don't worry, I've got a plane to catch this afternoon.

  69. So I got to get out of here.

  70. But we're going to talk about a learning church, a caring church, a worshiping church, a praying church, and an evangelizing church.

  71. A learning, caring, worshiping, praying, and evangelizing church.

  72. I want to start with a learning church.

  73. And just look back at verse 41.

  74. One, that those who accepted the apostle Peter's message, that Pentecost day when the Holy Spirit was poured out.

  75. Those who accepted his message were baptized.

  76. And about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  77. And it says they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

  78. On Pentecost, the resurrected Jesus poured out the spirit of truth.

  79. And the result was about 120 disciples who were praying there on Pentecost Sunday.

  80. They began to declare the wonderful works that God had done to save humanity through his son, Jesus.

  81. And one of those disciples stood up, Peter, the apostle Peter.

  82. And he preached the first Christian sermon.

  83. And as a result, 3,000 people were called by God.

  84. They were baptized by God.

  85. They were saved by God.

  86. They were added to the number of the church by God that we talked about last week.

  87. And it says that they immediately devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles.

  88. Which means that they were hungry and they were thirsty for doctrine.

  89. They wanted to, and they had a deep desire to learn the truths.

  90. That Jesus had given to his apostles, Peter, John, Matthew, that he was going to give to the apostle Paul.

  91. These spirit-filled Christians, they didn't just stop thinking on Pentecost.

  92. And go, wow, we're filled with the spirit.

  93. Don't have to think anymore.

  94. They didn't neglect their intellect.

  95. They didn't check their brains at the door.

  96. Therefore, they didn't despise theology.

  97. Rather, the Holy Spirit, the spirit of truth, came and made their minds begin to feast on the truth.

  98. Of the divinely inspired and authoritative revelation of God that's given to us in the scriptures.

  99. And was interpreted for us by Jesus and by his apostles.

  100. And this really started, you can go back to Easter Sunday.

  101. Jesus, he was raised from the dead.

  102. And what's one of the first things he does?

  103. He finds two people and he says, let's do a Bible study.

  104. This is Easter Sunday afternoon, okay?

  105. If you're raised from the dead, are you starting a Bible study that afternoon?

  106. Jesus went and he found two people, started a Bible study.

  107. And it says in Luke 24, beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  108. Jesus explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself.

  109. And Jesus said, he said, everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms.

  110. He'd been doing this for three years.

  111. But when somebody's raised from the dead, you start really paying attention to the Bible study, right?

  112. And don't you wish you had been there?

  113. Jesus pulls out the Old Testament, as it were, and he says, look, this is all about the promises that God made.

  114. And you, my apostles, are going to go and write the New Testament about how all those promises of God have been fulfilled in me.

  115. In my life, in my death, in my resurrection.

  116. In Acts chapter 1, we learn that Jesus spent the next 40 days after his resurrection.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  117. He spent 40 days, all day, every day with his apostles.

  118. And it says he was teaching them about the kingdom of God.

  119. Teaching them about that grand theme of the Bible.

  120. That God is king and he's bringing everything under his kingship through Jesus.

  121. Well, the apostles would do what Jesus told them to do.

  122. Which is that they would go on and they would write it all down.

  123. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  124. Romans.

  125. First and second Corinthians.

  126. Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians.

  127. First and second Thessalonians.

  128. First and second Peter.

  129. First John.

  130. Hebrews.

  131. All of it is the apostles' teaching.

  132. It's the teaching that Jesus gave to us through the apostles.

  133. And a Christian is somebody who feasts on that.

  134. And they didn't just learn this teaching for one hour a week.

  135. It says in verse 46 that every day they continued to meet together.

  136. They came together regularly and willingly day by day.

  137. When they finished their day's work.

  138. They go to one another's house.

  139. And they would study the Bible.

  140. Because they were hungry and thirsty for the truth.

  141. They were eager to sit at the feet of the apostles and learn.

  142. And they would say, tell us, how is Jesus our prophet and our priest and our king?

  143. How did Jesus in his death, how did he bring God's covenant with his people to a climax?

  144. How did Jesus in his resurrection launch the kingdom of God?

  145. How did Jesus in his life?

  146. How did Jesus in his life?

  147. What are the, if this is true, how should we then start living?

  148. If that's true.

  149. And this is what they were devouring.

  150. Every day was the doctrine of God's word so they could apply it to their lives.

  151. And let's just pause here for a little bit of application.

  152. If you're exploring Christianity and you do not yet have a modern translation of the Bible,

  153. we want to give you one of those because we're really excited about it.

  154. We think it's great that we have the Bible in our own language and we can have a copy in our hands.

  155. We would love to give you a copy.

  156. And we'd love to encourage you to start reading the Gospel of Mark.

  157. And just read the shortest of the stories of Jesus that we have.

  158. Read it with a Christian friend.

  159. Read it with a group of people.

  160. We actually have an exploring Christianity group that's been meeting on Thursday night.

  161. They would love to welcome you this week to explore the Gospel of Mark.

  162. Secondly, if you are a person who's wanting to learn the big picture of the Bible and the golden thread of the Bible and the great themes of the Bible,

  163. I brought a stack of about six of my favorite children's Bibles today.

  164. And I found that these are not just good for children.

  165. They're wonderful for adults, especially if you like pictures in your books.

  166. These are phenomenal Bibles and I'd encourage you to get one if you don't have one.

  167. And it's a great way to learn the Bible.

  168. But also if you're a parent, if you're a grandparent, I just want to encourage you that part of your, if you're a Christian,

  169. part of your duty, part of your responsibility is to get your kids or your grandkids on a daily IV drip of the apostles' teaching.

  170. And if you don't have a way to do that, I've got a way for you to do that.

  171. Third point of application is that if you're a newer Christian and you're trying to build your life on a solid foundation,

  172. think about the fact that they devoted themselves to gather together before work and after work on a daily basis to learn the apostles' teaching.

  173. They literally could not imagine owning their own copy of one of these and having it at their fingertips.

  174. And they also couldn't imagine owning one of these but only reading it one day a week.

  175. So, if that's you, if you're not, if you've got one of these but you don't really open it very often,

  176. I think Peter and the other apostles will say, you're not yet devoted to the apostles' teaching.

  177. And if you read it about five minutes a day, that's better than nothing.

  178. But I think these first Christians on the day of Pentecost would come to you and they would say,

  179. why are you starving yourself?

  180. Why are you dehydrating yourself?

  181. Aren't you hungry?

  182. Aren't you thirsty?

  183. Fourth point of application is that if you're one of those solo Christians, Lone Ranger Christians,

  184. and you're not yet part of a weekly small group that's reading the Bible together and exploring the Bible together,

  185. I want to encourage you to make that a top priority this summer.

  186. Because we won't grow without other Christians.

  187. We need other Christians to help us learn about the love of God the Father

  188. and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

  189. We need other Christians to help us develop a personal relationship with this God,

  190. the Father who made us and the Son who delivers us and the Holy Spirit who transforms us.

  191. We need other Christians who can help us learn what it means to submit my reason

  192. and to submit my experience to something greater than my reason and my experience.

  193. to God's authoritative word, which is our only infallible rule for faith and practice.

  194. We need other Christians to help us think through all of those downstream moral implications

  195. and all those downstream ethical consequences of the gospel.

  196. What does it mean to live my life in line with the gospel?

  197. What does it mean to live a life worthy of the gospel?

  198. You're not going to figure that out on your own.

  199. And my fifth point of application is that if you're a more established Christian,

  200. I want to remind you of something you probably already know,

  201. which is that the verse 42 is a divinely inspired order.

  202. The teaching and the doctrine is first and most important in all the marks of the church in this series.

  203. Why is that?

  204. Because the teaching defines and the teaching controls and the teaching determines everything else in the life of the church

  205. and the life of a Christian.

  206. And when the church lowers the authority of the teaching,

  207. and when the church puts something else at its center,

  208. the problems that follow are sadly predictable.

  209. If you know anything about the New Testament or the history of the church,

  210. if a church tries to substitute ethics for doctrine,

  211. or politics for the gospel,

  212. or philosophies and isms for the apostles' teaching,

  213. the church is in serious danger.

  214. And the apostle Paul writes to the church in Ephesus about this.

  215. He says in Ephesians 4, he says,

  216. it's possible to be tossed back and forth by the waves

  217. and blown here and there by every wind of teaching,

  218. every wind of doctrine,

  219. and by the cunning and craftiness of people

  220. and their deceitful scheming.

  221. If you want to get a sense for the problems that arise

  222. when churches lower the authority of the teaching

  223. and they put something else at the center,

  224. read Galatians.

  225. Read Corinthians.

  226. Paul's worked up because the church has gotten into a mess.

  227. I have the privilege the next few days

  228. of going to a gathering of pastors.

  229. We're going to be with a great teacher

  230. from the University of Oxford.

  231. His name's N.T. Wright.

  232. He's a great Bible scholar.

  233. And he writes this.

  234. He says,

  235. where no attention is given to teaching

  236. and to constant, lifelong Christian learning,

  237. people quickly revert to the worldview

  238. or mindset of the surrounding culture

  239. and end up with their minds shaped

  240. by whatever social pressures are most persuasive

  241. with Jesus somewhere around

  242. as a pale influence or memory.

  243. And because we don't want that to happen

  244. at Christ Church,

  245. we put together some classes this summer, this fall,

  246. and we hope that they'll help you learn

  247. the apostles' teaching.

  248. We hope that you'll take advantage

  249. of these great opportunities.

  250. But we see that clearly

  251. we're called to be a learning church.

  252. But also we're called to be a caring church.

  253. We're called to be a caring church.

  254. Look at verse 42.

  255. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching

  256. and to fellowship.

  257. The message of the apostles,

  258. the message of Peter,

  259. led to this inward change.

  260. And then that inward change

  261. was expressed outwardly

  262. through these 3,000 baptisms.

  263. And the reason they immediately

  264. devoted themselves to the teaching

  265. and to fellowship

  266. is because these people

  267. had been born again from above

  268. by the Holy Spirit.

  269. This is how Peter puts it.

  270. Peter who preached that sermon,

  271. he wrote a letter called 1 Peter.

  272. And he says in 1 Peter 2,

  273. he says,

  274. like newborn babies,

  275. crave pure spiritual milk

  276. so that by it you may grow up

  277. in your salvation.

  278. That's what fellowship is about.

  279. Fellowship is about

  280. having the same cravings.

  281. Fellowship is about

  282. being a bunch of newborn babies

  283. that are growing up

  284. to become like Jesus.

  285. You see,

  286. that word fellowship

  287. has become so watered down

  288. that,

  289. and so,

  290. so shallow,

  291. so superficial

  292. that we think

  293. the word fellowship means

  294. that we'll gather together

  295. two or three Sundays a month.

  296. We'll get together

  297. in a church building.

  298. We will shake hands.

  299. We'll do a thing

  300. for about an hour.

  301. We'll have a cup of coffee.

  302. We'll be friendly and nice

  303. and we'll go home.

  304. We'll come back

  305. and we'll do it again.

  306. But the word koinonia

  307. in Greek,

  308. that word koinonia

  309. means a deep sharing in common.

  310. And what is it

  311. that we share in common?

  312. Peter says we're newborn babies

  313. who are sharing

  314. the same new life.

  315. We're sharing

  316. in the same cravings

  317. for the same nourishment.

  318. and we've been born

  319. of the same spirit.

  320. We've been regenerated.

  321. We've experienced

  322. the new birth.

  323. We've had the divine life

  324. of God the Father

  325. planted in our souls

  326. so that we now

  327. are members.

  328. We're sons and daughters

  329. of a royal family.

  330. We're rejoicing

  331. in the same king

  332. and the same savior.

  333. That's the koinonia.

  334. We share Jesus together

  335. and we delight

  336. in the same message

  337. about Jesus.

  338. We delight

  339. in the same teaching

  340. of Jesus.

  341. We've come into

  342. this realm

  343. of grace

  344. so that we share

  345. in the resurrection

  346. life of Jesus.

  347. We share in the righteousness

  348. of Jesus

  349. and all of our eyes

  350. are fixed

  351. on the same person

  352. and on the same thing.

  353. We're looking out

  354. to where we're going.

  355. We're looking out

  356. to the eternal glory

  357. for which we're

  358. preparing ourselves.

  359. that is what

  360. fellowship means.

  361. That's what we share

  362. in common.

  363. The new life

  364. of God.

  365. The new cravings

  366. for God

  367. and that cannot help

  368. but express itself

  369. and that's why

  370. they were meeting together

  371. every morning

  372. and every evening

  373. before and after work

  374. because they said

  375. to themselves

  376. if we've been united

  377. by these eternal bonds

  378. in the spirit

  379. with Jesus

  380. and in the presence

  381. of the Father

  382. well we've got to

  383. express that

  384. in real life

  385. and that's why

  386. the Apostle John

  387. said in 1 John 3

  388. he said we know

  389. that we pass

  390. from death

  391. to life

  392. because we love

  393. the brothers

  394. and we love

  395. the sisters

  396. and from that moment

  397. that those 3,000

  398. were converted

  399. and baptized

  400. nothing could keep

  401. them away

  402. from Christian fellowship.

  403. Nothing of lesser worth

  404. nothing of lesser priority

  405. was going to crowd out

  406. or distract them

  407. from Christian fellowship

  408. because it had become

  409. the biggest thing

  410. it had become

  411. the deepest thing

  412. in their lives

  413. and how do we know that?

  414. Well look at verse 44

  415. it says

  416. all the believers

  417. were together

  418. and had everything

  419. in common

  420. they sold property

  421. and possessions

  422. to give to anyone

  423. who had need.

  424. they put their money

  425. where their mouth was.

  426. The first fruit

  427. of the Holy Spirit

  428. is love

  429. and when needs

  430. began to arise

  431. in the community

  432. they began

  433. to practice love

  434. they began

  435. to practice

  436. radical

  437. voluntary

  438. generosity

  439. because they thought

  440. to themselves

  441. well the father

  442. shared his son

  443. and the son

  444. shared his life

  445. and therefore

  446. we

  447. are going to mirror

  448. the gracious

  449. generosity of God

  450. by sharing our resources

  451. to care for our brothers

  452. and sisters in Christ.

  453. They were not just

  454. devoting that most

  455. precious resource

  456. of their time

  457. but they also said

  458. that if God

  459. has given me

  460. a super abundance

  461. and I find my brother

  462. or sister in Christ

  463. in need

  464. or maybe even suffering

  465. because of their faith

  466. I'm prepared

  467. to help them

  468. as I would

  469. my own flesh

  470. and blood.

  471. No wonder

  472. the Acts

  473. later says

  474. in Acts 17

  475. that they

  476. they were turning

  477. the world

  478. upside down

  479. because they were

  480. living in a way

  481. that was totally

  482. countercultural

  483. to the world.

  484. They weren't just

  485. caring for their family

  486. and their nearest kin

  487. they were caring

  488. Jews caring for Gentiles

  489. Gentiles caring for

  490. Jews.

  491. So let's just

  492. pause here

  493. for some practical

  494. application.

  495. If you identify

  496. as a Christian

  497. and someone

  498. were to audit

  499. your time

  500. and they were to

  501. audit your money

  502. would it be clear

  503. to that person

  504. would it be obvious

  505. to them that you

  506. are devoted

  507. to a caring

  508. Christian fellowship?

  509. And I say that

  510. because our society

  511. is experiencing

  512. an epidemic

  513. of isolation

  514. and loneliness.

  515. Our society

  516. is experiencing

  517. an epidemic

  518. of addiction

  519. to dopamine

  520. to distraction

  521. to our devices.

  522. Our society

  523. is living

  524. in incredible

  525. fear

  526. and despair

  527. about a coming

  528. nuclear holocaust

  529. a coming robot

  530. apocalypse.

  531. Our society

  532. is like really

  533. afraid

  534. but the church

  535. is called

  536. to be different.

  537. The church

  538. is called

  539. to be

  540. a counterculture

  541. and the church

  542. says

  543. to God

  544. and to one another

  545. we're going to live

  546. like family.

  547. We're going to live

  548. devoted to each other.

  549. We're going to care

  550. for each other

  551. in the most practical

  552. of ways.

  553. We're called

  554. to discipline

  555. our time

  556. so that

  557. we

  558. will get together

  559. often

  560. with the people

  561. who share

  562. our same cravings

  563. for God

  564. and that is going

  565. to remain

  566. a top priority

  567. for us.

  568. We're not going

  569. to let sports

  570. we're not going

  571. to let entertainment

  572. we're not going

  573. to let social media

  574. we're not going

  575. to let all these

  576. things just drain

  577. the time

  578. out of our lives

  579. and then we give

  580. God and his people

  581. the leftovers.

  582. No.

  583. We're going to have

  584. predictable

  585. persevering patterns

  586. of time.

  587. We're going to have

  588. continuing

  589. consistent

  590. habits of money

  591. so that we can show

  592. our father's care

  593. for our brothers

  594. and sisters

  595. in Christ

  596. in practical

  597. ordinary

  598. everyday

  599. ways.

  600. The second point

  601. of application

  602. is again

  603. if you're not

  604. part of a small

  605. group

  606. which is our

  607. matrix for

  608. belonging

  609. and care

  610. and accountability

  611. it's our way

  612. of making sure

  613. that people

  614. are getting

  615. together

  616. to read

  617. the Bible

  618. and to pray

  619. and to encourage

  620. and strengthen

  621. each other.

  622. We have three

  623. new groups

  624. they've just

  625. started.

  626. We have

  627. community groups

  628. restarting

  629. at the end

  630. of the summer.

  631. I want to urge

  632. you to do

  633. something different

  634. than our culture.

  635. I want to urge

  636. you not to walk

  637. alone.

  638. I want to urge

  639. you to find

  640. people.

  641. Take a risk.

  642. Have some courage

  643. to just find

  644. some people

  645. that are total

  646. strangers to you

  647. now

  648. that God

  649. probably has

  650. designed to

  651. become some

  652. of your deepest

  653. and closest

  654. friends.

  655. We have a

  656. staff member

  657. coming starting

  658. on July 1st

  659. Dylan.

  660. He's really

  661. tall and

  662. convincing.

  663. His job

  664. he's our

  665. groups and

  666. formation director

  667. and his job

  668. is going to be

  669. to come and

  670. help you find

  671. a group

  672. that's right

  673. for you.

  674. He told me

  675. I don't take

  676. no for an

  677. answer.

  678. I get people

  679. in groups.

  680. Just know

  681. he's coming

  682. for you.

  683. He's coming

  684. for you.

  685. It's a learning

  686. church.

  687. It's a caring

  688. church.

  689. But also

  690. we're called

  691. to be a

  692. worshiping

  693. church.

  694. A worshiping

  695. church.

  696. The apostles

  697. teaching led

  698. to this deep

  699. daily Christian

  700. fellowship and

  701. the breaking

  702. of bread.

  703. It says

  704. that in

  705. verse 46

  706. that every

  707. day they

  708. continued to

  709. meet together

  710. in the temple

  711. courts and

  712. they broke

  713. bread in their

  714. homes and

  715. they ate

  716. together with

  717. glad and

  718. sincere

  719. hearts praising

  720. God and

  721. enjoying the

  722. favor of

  723. all the

  724. people.

  725. There were

  726. no church

  727. buildings.

  728. They met

  729. in each

  730. other's

  731. houses.

  732. They would

  733. share a

  734. meal together

  735. like lunch

  736. or breakfast

  737. or whatever

  738. and then they

  739. would take

  740. one loaf

  741. of bread

  742. and they

  743. would break

  744. it into

  745. pieces.

  746. They would

  747. hand it

  748. around to

  749. the others.

  750. They would

  751. take a

  752. cup of

  753. wine.

  754. They would

  755. pour it.

  756. They would

  757. drink it.

  758. They would

  759. pass it

  760. around to

  761. the others.

  762. And they

  763. did this

  764. because on

  765. the night

  766. before Jesus

  767. crossed he

  768. said do

  769. this.

  770. So that

  771. when the

  772. Holy Spirit

  773. was poured

  774. out at

  775. Pentecost

  776. these new

  777. converts

  778. immediately

  779. began to

  780. gather early

  781. on Sunday

  782. morning.

  783. The time

  784. when Jesus

  785. was raised

  786. from the

  787. dead.

  788. And they

  789. said we

  790. want to come

  791. together at

  792. that very

  793. moment.

  794. and we

  795. want to

  796. share in

  797. holy

  798. communion.

  799. And that

  800. ensured that

  801. their worship

  802. was unified

  803. and centered

  804. on Jesus

  805. and on

  806. his cross.

  807. On his

  808. sacrificial

  809. self-giving

  810. love and

  811. his broken

  812. body and

  813. his outpoured

  814. blood to

  815. forgive our

  816. sins and

  817. to win a

  818. victory for

  819. us over

  820. death.

  821. This bread

  822. and this

  823. wine was

  824. for them a

  825. symbol of

  826. their savior.

  827. And what

  828. happened in

  829. their hearts

  830. as they broke

  831. the bread of

  832. their savior

  833. it says that

  834. they had

  835. glad and

  836. sincere hearts

  837. and that

  838. they were

  839. praising God

  840. and they were

  841. enjoying one

  842. another.

  843. Why were they

  844. full of

  845. gladness?

  846. Why were they

  847. full of

  848. praise?

  849. Why were

  850. they full of

  851. joy?

  852. Because they

  853. had been

  854. set free.

  855. They had been

  856. set free from

  857. sin and death

  858. and hell and

  859. the devil.

  860. They were

  861. excited about

  862. that.

  863. The apostle

  864. Paul writes

  865. in Galatians

  866. 2.20

  867. I've been

  868. crucified with

  869. Christ and

  870. I no longer

  871. live but

  872. Christ lives

  873. in me and

  874. the life I

  875. now live in

  876. the body I

  877. live by faith

  878. in the son

  879. of God who

  880. loved me and

  881. gave himself

  882. for me.

  883. They were so

  884. full of joy

  885. that my

  886. God, the

  887. God who

  888. created the

  889. universe, loves

  890. me so much

  891. that he died

  892. the cruelest and

  893. most heinous

  894. grotesque death

  895. possible.

  896. Death on a

  897. cross in

  898. order that he

  899. might bring me

  900. into a

  901. relationship with

  902. him of

  903. holy communion.

  904. And gladness

  905. and joy and

  906. praise filled

  907. their hearts and

  908. it began to

  909. erupt from

  910. their hearts like

  911. a geyser because

  912. it just had to

  913. come out.

  914. It had to

  915. express itself.

  916. And I love one

  917. of my favorite

  918. stories in Acts

  919. is Acts 16.

  920. Paul and Silas

  921. they take the

  922. gospel to

  923. Europe.

  924. They go to

  925. Philippi and

  926. they preach the

  927. gospel and people

  928. don't like it

  929. very much so

  930. they're stripped

  931. and they're

  932. flogged and

  933. they have their

  934. backs beaten

  935. with rods and

  936. they're thrown

  937. into this dark

  938. prison and

  939. their feet are

  940. fastened in

  941. stocks.

  942. And you

  943. remember what

  944. happened?

  945. It says that

  946. at midnight

  947. Paul and

  948. Silas were

  949. praying and

  950. singing hymns

  951. to God and

  952. other prisoners

  953. were listening

  954. to them.

  955. And why did

  956. they sing?

  957. How did they

  958. worship in the

  959. darkness?

  960. How did they

  961. worship in

  962. pain and

  963. persecution?

  964. How did they

  965. have a worship

  966. service in the

  967. most unlikely

  968. of places?

  969. And how in

  970. the world did

  971. they worship

  972. with low

  973. budget non

  974. professional

  975. music?

  976. I mean no

  977. AV team,

  978. no slides,

  979. nothing.

  980. How did

  981. they, we

  982. don't know.

  983. How did

  984. they, you

  985. work that

  986. out.

  987. But what I

  988. want you to

  989. know is that

  990. they had a

  991. joy that

  992. was not

  993. dependent on

  994. or determined

  995. by their

  996. circumstances.

  997. Paul later

  998. will sit in

  999. another prison

  1000. cell and

  1001. he'll be

  1002. chained to

  1003. two Roman

  1004. guards and

  1005. he writes

  1006. this letter

  1007. to the

  1008. Philippians,

  1009. he says

  1010. Philippians 4,

  1011. rejoice in

  1012. the Lord

  1013. always.

  1014. I will say

  1015. it again,

  1016. rejoice.

  1017. In Romans

  1018. 5 he says

  1019. we rejoice in

  1020. the hope of

  1021. the glory of

  1022. God and we

  1023. rejoice in

  1024. our sufferings.

  1025. Peter writes

  1026. these suffering

  1027. Christians and

  1028. he says you

  1029. rejoice with

  1030. joy unspeakable

  1031. and full of

  1032. glory.

  1033. Their joy,

  1034. it wasn't a

  1035. superficial or

  1036. shallow joy

  1037. because verse

  1038. 43 says everyone

  1039. was filled with

  1040. awe.

  1041. It was an

  1042. awesome joy.

  1043. It was a

  1044. reverent joy.

  1045. It was a

  1046. deep and

  1047. holy and

  1048. wonderful joy

  1049. because they

  1050. realized we

  1051. are here in

  1052. the presence of

  1053. almighty God

  1054. and he is so

  1055. great and we

  1056. are so small

  1057. but he and

  1058. his greatness

  1059. became small

  1060. and had his

  1061. body broken

  1062. and his blood

  1063. poured out and

  1064. when they broke

  1065. that bread and

  1066. they poured out

  1067. that wine their

  1068. hearts were filled

  1069. with joy and

  1070. with praise and

  1071. with gladness

  1072. because God

  1073. loved me and he

  1074. gave himself for

  1075. me.

  1076. They were a

  1077. learning church,

  1078. a caring church,

  1079. a worshiping

  1080. church and at

  1081. this point you're

  1082. like he has two

  1083. more points but he

  1084. only has a few

  1085. more minutes.

  1086. Watch this.

  1087. They were also a

  1088. praying church.

  1089. They were a

  1090. praying church.

  1091. The apostles

  1092. teaching defined

  1093. and directed their

  1094. fellowship and

  1095. their bread breaking

  1096. and their singing

  1097. but also their

  1098. prayers.

  1099. You got to

  1100. remember that

  1101. these are Jewish

  1102. people.

  1103. The people of

  1104. God, they would

  1105. pray two times a

  1106. day they would

  1107. pray the Shema

  1108. from Deuteronomy

  1109. 6.

  1110. Every night when

  1111. they would go lay

  1112. down for bed and

  1113. every morning they

  1114. get up from their

  1115. bed they would pray

  1116. Shema O Israel.

  1117. Hear O Israel.

  1118. The Lord our God.

  1119. The Lord is one.

  1120. You shall love the

  1121. Lord your God with

  1122. all your heart and

1123. with all your soul and

  1124. with all your strength.

  1125. That's the praying

1126. life of the people of

  1127. God from Moses

  1128. forward.

1129. All the way back to

  1130. Abraham.

  1131. All the way back

  1132. probably to Adam.

  1133. Right?

1134. And then we get this

  1135. great prayer book

  1136. called the Psalms.

  1137. And King David writes

1138. in Psalm 55 he says

  1139. morning, noon, and

  1140. evening I will cry

  1141. out to you three

  1142. times a day.

  1143. And so there's this

  1144. prayer pattern where

  1145. the prophet Daniel he's

1146. told by the king of

  1147. Persia you know he's

  1148. living as an exile

  1149. very far away from

  1150. the presence of God

  1151. the temple of God.

  1152. He's living out in

  1153. the empire of Persia

  1154. and the king of

  1155. Persia says Daniel

  1156. you're not supposed to

  1157. pray to the living

  1158. God.

  1159. In fact the only

  1160. person you're supposed

1161. to pray to is me

  1162. the king of Persia.

  1163. And what does

  1164. Daniel do?

  1165. He says nope.

  1166. Daniel 6 three times

1167. a day he got down on

  1168. his knees he prayed

  1169. giving thanks to his

1170. God just as he had

  1171. done before this habit

  1172. of morning, noon, and

  1173. evening prayer.

  1174. These first Christians

  1175. this early church they

  1176. devoted themselves to

  1177. the habit of praying

  1178. this pattern from

  1179. Moses to David to

  1180. Daniel to Jesus and

1181. Jesus said I want you

  1182. to have private times

  1183. alone of praying

  1184. before God.

1185. He says in Matthew 6

  1186. the heart of the

  1187. Sermon on the Mount

  1188. he says when you

  1189. pray go into your

  1190. inner room, go into

  1191. your closet, close the

1192. door and pray to your

  1193. father who is unseen.

1194. And that was the power

  1195. of the early church.

  1196. But they also came

  1197. together in corporate

  1198. prayer meetings and

  1199. they were in the

  1200. middle of a prayer

  1201. meeting when the Holy

  1202. Spirit was poured out

  1203. on the day of

  1204. Pentecost.

  1205. They're in the middle

  1206. of a prayer meeting

1207. in Acts chapter 4 when

    Acts 4 chapter mention

1208. it says the place where

  1209. they were meeting was

  1210. shaken and all the

  1211. people were filled with

  1212. the Holy Spirit and

  1213. began to speak the

  1214. word of God boldly.

  1215. The Holy Spirit

  1216. devotes his people to

  1217. prayer.

1218. And when we pray we

1219. say Lord give us more

  1220. of the Holy Spirit

  1221. and the Holy Spirit

  1222. intensifies our

  1223. praying.

1224. This is one of the

  1225. great tests for people

  1226. who say I have

  1227. Christian beliefs is to

1228. say well how do you

  1229. live out those beliefs

  1230. in your practices of

  1231. prayer?

1232. Do you have a set time

  1233. and place every day

  1234. where you meet with

  1235. God?

1236. Do you have a set time

  1237. and place every week

  1238. where you meet and

  1239. pray with other

  1240. Christians?

  1241. Have you learned how

1242. to pray by the Holy

  1243. Spirit?

  1244. Have you learned how

  1245. to pray willingly and

  1246. pray freely and pray

  1247. with power?

1248. I want to urge you to

1249. put this on the top of

  1250. your summer must do

  1251. list.

1252. So learn how to pray.

  1253. Learning church,

  1254. caring church,

  1255. worshiping church,

  1256. praying church,

  1257. finally all this has

  1258. to flow outward

  1259. somewhere.

  1260. Right?

1261. It needs to move out

1262. like a river to the

  1263. ocean.

  1264. And so the church

  1265. began to be an

  1266. evangelizing church.

1267. And it says in verse

1268. 47 that the Lord was

  1269. adding to their number

  1270. daily those who were

  1271. being saved.

1272. And because I'm out of

1273. time I just have to ask

  1274. is that our expectation?

1275. Or do we think oh

  1276. we're that was

  1277. Jerusalem but we live

  1278. in Berkeley and God

  1279. doesn't work that way

  1280. anymore.

  1281. You see the church

  1282. they were praying that

  1283. the power of the

  1284. gospel would go out

  1285. from the church.

  1286. And they were

  1287. prioritizing outreach

  1288. because the Holy

  1289. Spirit was filling the

  1290. church with love

  1291. and joy

  1292. and peace.

  1293. And because of that

  1294. people were looking

  1295. around at the family

  1296. members they had and

  1297. the friends and the

  1298. co-workers and the

  1299. neighbors that they had

  1300. and saying Lord before

1301. we were just kind of

  1302. annoyed with them

  1303. because they weren't

  1304. parking their car

  1305. correctly or they

  1306. weren't turning in their

1307. reports at work on time

1308. but now what I'm really

  1309. concerned about is where

  1310. are they going

  1311. ultimately?

  1312. what's going to happen

  1313. to them eternally?

1314. And they began to pray

  1315. Lord let your kingdom

  1316. come in his life.

  1317. Lord let heaven come

  1318. down into her heart.

  1319. Lord open up their

  1320. hearts so that they

  1321. might be dissatisfied

1322. and say there's got to

1323. be more to life than

  1324. this.

1325. Lord open up a door of

  1326. opportunity when I

1327. when I invite them over

1328. to my table would you

  1329. please would you please

1330. let them feel the warm

  1331. welcome of the father?

1332. Lord open my lips so

1333. that I can ask better

  1334. questions.

1335. Open my ears so that I

  1336. can be a curious

  1337. listener.

  1338. Give me courage.

1339. Open my heart so that

  1340. I can have a simple

  1341. conversation that become

  1342. a serious conversation

  1343. that becomes a

  1344. spiritual conversation

  1345. because what we're

  1346. expecting as a church

1347. Lord is that you want

1348. to add to your number

  1349. those who are being

  1350. saved.

  1351. ignored.

  1352. And so the question

1353. is is that what we

  1354. pray for?

  1355. Is that our priority?

  1356. And is that our

  1357. expectation?

  1358. To be a learning

  1359. church, a caring

  1360. church, a worshiping

  1361. church, a praying

  1362. church that is

  1363. ultimately an evangelizing

  1364. church.

1365. It may be so in the

  1366. name of the father,

  1367. son, and holy spirit.

  1368. Amen.
