  4. Good morning, Christchurch. My name is Suzy Shin, and I'm part of the Monthly Oakland Family Group.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of Mark, chapter 6, verses 30 to 43, as printed in your liturgy.

    Mark 6:30–43

  6. The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

  7. And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.

  8. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

  9. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

  10. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.

  11. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

  12. And he began to teach them many things.

  13. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late.

  14. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages, and buy themselves something to eat.

  15. But he answered them, You give them something to eat.

  16. And they said to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?

  17. And he said to them, How many loaves do you have? Go and see.

  18. And when they had found out, they said, Five, and two fish.

  19. Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.

  20. So they sat down in groups by hundreds and by fifties.

  21. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing,

  22. and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

  23. And he divided the two fish among them all.

  24. And they all ate and were satisfied.

  25. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.

  26. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  27. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  28. Good morning.

  29. Christ Church, it's good to be with you.

  30. My name is Jesse Robinson.

  31. I am not a pastor on staff here.

  32. I'm a friend of Christ Church, friend of Jonathan's and Andrew's.

  33. I'm a pastor of a church called Indelible Grace.

  34. We're in Hayward, North Hayward.

  35. But Andrew is a dear friend of mine.

  36. And since he's taking a sabbatical, I'm trying to give him a favor.

  37. With the hope that he'll give me a favor, too.

  38. That's how the kingdom works.

  39. It's a tit for tat.

  40. You might know this, but we're halfway past the middle of summer, right?

  41. If you're anything like me, summer is always a tease.

  42. I have all these hopes of rest, a slower pace, vacations, catching my breath.

  43. But summer never delivers.

  44. It never delivers.

  45. Actually, many things that we look for, look to for rest, don't deliver.

  46. Are you going on vacation or holiday this summer?

  47. You know the saying, right?

  48. That I need a vacation from my vacation, right?

  49. You get back and you're more weary in a couple of days to recover.

  50. Recover.

  51. Or just the daily places where we go for rest, right?

  52. A brief break on your phone.

  53. To check Instagram.

  54. Or some TikTok.

  55. Does it really give us rest?

  56. Maybe after you collapse on the couch from putting the kids down, you turn your brain off and just put on a show or a movie.

  57. Does it give us rest?

  58. So in honor of summer and of the fact that Christ is going on a retreat very soon, I want us to think about rest.

  59. Now, while I do it through a text, we might not think about as about rest.

  60. The feeding of the 5,000 in Mark 6.

  61. As we look at this, I want us to look at three things.

  62. We're going to first look at the offering of rest, the subversion of rest, and the shepherd of rest.

  63. The offering of rest, subversion, and the shepherd.

  64. So first, the offering of rest.

  65. It's largely overlooked in this story that the feeding of the 5,000 begins with rest.

  66. The disciples have been commissioned by Jesus.

  67. They've been on an extended missions trip since they come back.

  68. And they're reporting to Jesus everything they said and did.

  69. And they've done a lot.

  70. They've been on the move nonstop.

  71. Meeting people.

  72. Confronting demons.

  73. Healing the sick.

  74. Teaching.

  75. They are spreading the word about the kingdom of God.

  76. And Jesus' response when they get back?

  77. He doesn't say,

  78. Oh, you didn't do more?

  79. What does he say?

  80. Look at verse 31.

  81. And he said to them,

  82. Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.

  83. Let's grab an Airbnb down by Yosemite.

  84. Right?

  85. Or the Santa Cruz Mountains.

  86. And let's rest.

  87. You're depleted.

  88. You're tired.

  89. You've got no gas in the tank.

  90. Let's get away just you and me.

  91. And let's go somewhere with no cell service.

  92. And rest.

  93. Jesus offers rest.

  94. And that's on brand.

  95. That's who God is.

  96. Maybe you've been a Christian your whole life.

  97. Or maybe you're not.

  98. And you're just curious about this church thing.

  99. But it's easy to miss.

  100. Christians and non-Christians alike miss how much the Bible is actually about rest.

  101. In fact, the Bible opens with rest.

  102. God creates everything in six days by just speaking.

  103. But then this all-powerful God, all-creating God,

  104. he does something strange on the seventh day.

  105. It says,

  106. And he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

  107. The rabbis, the Jewish rabbis in their commentary on this,

  108. say this is not about God needing rest.

  109. God's setting an example for us.

  110. Setting a pattern that we are created for rest.

  111. Rest is not a bug.

  112. It's a feature of our humanity.

  113. And it's like that our culture easily loses sight of.

  114. Journalist Oliver Berkman has a book, 4,000 Weeks.

  115. Your pastor, Andrew, referred me to it.

  116. And it's a great book.

  117. He points out how much anxiety,

  118. modern anxiety comes from thinking that we can do everything.

  119. How anxious we get.

  120. This optimization culture that we live in.

  121. I'm going to optimize so I can get the most out of my work, my vacation.

  122. He says, this is a farce.

  123. It's a farce.

  124. We can't do everything.

  125. That's the first step of wisdom,

  126. is to learn our limitations.

  127. Berkman is not a Christian,

  128. but he's talking about the Christian concept of creatureliness.

  129. That we are made by an infinite God,

  130. but we are finite.

  131. We are made to rest.

  132. And God cares about that.

  133. He built it into the very fabric of our creation.

  134. This was so important,

  135. it even made it into the Ten Commandments.

  136. Right?

  137. This doesn't get much publicity.

  138. Usually it's don't murder or don't steal.

  139. But right in the middle,

  140. right in the middle,

  141. no less morally important,

  142. superior,

  143. is this command to rest.

  144. God says,

  145. honor the Sabbath.

  146. Six days you shall labor

  147. and do all your work,

  148. but the seventh day is a Sabbath.

  149. Your boss,

  150. your divine boss,

  151. wants you to take a break every week.

  152. week.

  153. Is this who you thought God was?

  154. He actually cares about your rest.

  155. Jesus is offering his disciples rest.

  156. In fact,

  157. this Sabbath command

  158. comes on the heels

  159. of the Hebrews being freed from slavery in Egypt.

  160. In his little book,

  161. The Sabbath as Resistance,

  162. scholar Walter Brueggemann,

  163. he connects a culture's economy

  164. to its religion.

  165. The God of Israel is different

  166. than the Egyptian gods,

  167. the Egyptians.

  168. Pharaoh is a slave driver

  169. because his gods are slave drivers.

  170. He makes the Hebrews

  171. produce more and more bricks

  172. for less and less.

  173. When you read the passage,

  174. the story in Exodus,

  175. the Egyptians actually accuse the Hebrews.

  176. They say,

  177. why have you not done more bricks?

  178. You are lazy.

  179. You are lazy.

  180. The God of Israel,

  181. meanwhile,

  182. has a different value system.

  183. Rest is baked in.

  184. God tells us

  185. there's something more valuable,

  186. more essential,

  187. more human

  188. than productivity.

  189. In fact,

  190. modern labor laws

  191. were profoundly shaped

  192. by Judeo-Christian values

  193. about work

  194. and Sabbath.

  195. the work week,

  196. the 40-hour work week,

  197. was originally championed

  198. by Christian reformers.

  199. But in a secular economy,

  200. if there is no God

  201. to regulate

  202. either work or recreation,

  203. then what happens?

  204. In the absence of God,

  205. something must rule

  206. our work

  207. or rest.

  208. And when there is no God,

  209. what is it?

  210. Profit.

  211. Greed.

  212. If profit is ultimate,

  213. there can be no true rest.

  214. The more you work,

  215. the more money you'll make.

  216. But how much different

  217. is Yahweh,

  218. the God of Israel?

  219. God is not a slave driver.

  220. He's not an angry middle manager

  221. trying to squeeze out

  222. more productivity from you.

  223. He's not Pharaoh.

  224. He's a God

  225. who frees the slaves

  226. and gives rest.

  227. Last year,

  228. I was on a pastor's retreat

  229. in the Rocky Mountains.

  230. I'm in a cohort

  231. of younger pastors

  232. and we're led

  233. by this gray-haired pastor

  234. named Scott.

  235. And we went on

  236. a group hike.

  237. Now,

  238. I have a moderate condition

  239. of cerebral palsy,

  240. a disability.

  241. I like to say

  242. that my balance

  243. is impaired,

  244. but my sense of humor

  245. is improved

  246. by this condition.

  247. And so,

  248. we're going on

  249. this hike together

  250. and we're hiking

  251. up some moderate inclines.

  252. We're 8,000 feet.

  253. So we're breathing,

  254. I'm breathing kind of heavy.

  255. This is very different

  256. to the Bay Area.

  257. And there were

  258. some difficult parts

  259. and Scott,

  260. our leader,

  261. over and over

  262. kept checking with me.

  263. Hey,

  264. are you okay?

  265. Hey,

  266. do we need to stop

  267. and rest?

  268. His sensitivity

  269. was attuned

  270. to my work,

  271. my output.

  272. my exhaustion.

  273. Prince,

  274. that is who

  275. Jesus is

  276. to us.

  277. He knows you

  278. better than you.

  279. He sees you.

  280. He sees your exhaustion

  281. even when you deny it.

  282. That is who Jesus is.

  283. Jesus takes a look

  284. at his disciples

  285. and says,

  286. you need a break.

  287. And they don't even

  288. ask for it.

  289. He just gives it.

  290. He initiates.

  291. He offers it.

  292. So here's a question

  293. for you this morning.

  294. What would Jesus say

  295. to you

  296. this morning?

  297. How are you doing?

  298. Are you depleted?

  299. Are you tired?

  300. Maybe you're

  301. physically tired.

  302. Maybe it's emotional.

  303. You're carrying

  304. a lot of disappointment

  305. and hurt.

  306. Or maybe it's spiritual.

  307. Listen,

  308. maybe you're living

  309. a life where you

  310. are serving

  311. a slave-driving God.

  312. Maybe you

  313. are the slave-driving God.

  314. You are Pharaoh

  315. constantly pushing

  316. yourself or others.

  317. And you're exhausted.

  318. Or maybe you're

  319. the disciples

  320. and you're simply

  321. coming off a season

  322. of faithful ministry

  323. and you're like,

  324. hey, Jesus,

  325. I'm tired.

  326. Whatever it is,

  327. God sees your weariness

  328. and he offers rest.

  329. And he said to them,

  330. come away by yourselves

  331. to a desolate place

  332. and rest a while.

  333. That's our first point,

  334. the offering of rest.

  335. Second point,

  336. the subversion of rest.

  337. Now, emotionally,

  338. Jesus is a bit

  339. like summer here.

  340. He's a bit of a tease.

  341. He offers a retreat

  342. and on the way

  343. to the Airbnb,

  344. an instant crowd

  345. appears.

  346. Look at verse 33.

  347. Now, when he saw

  348. them going

  349. and recognized them

  350. and they ran there

  351. on foot

  352. from all the towns

  353. and got there

  354. ahead of them.

  355. And when he went ashore,

  356. he saw a great crowd.

  357. So instead of a retreat,

  358. we have a needy crowd.

  359. And so Jesus

  360. starts to teach them.

  361. That's what Jesus does.

  362. He's a teacher.

  363. And then verse 35,

  364. it says,

  365. it grew late.

  366. And the disciples

  367. are like,

  368. hey, Jesus,

  369. this sermon

  370. is fantastic.

  371. But the call

  372. of the pillow

  373. is starting

  374. to be stronger

  375. than the Holy Spirit.

  376. Right?

  377. Can we go

  378. get some rest?

  379. And they see

  380. an opportunity.

  381. The crowd's getting hungry.

  382. In verse 36,

  383. they tell Jesus,

  384. send the crowd away

  385. to go buy themselves food.

  386. They take control.

  387. They tell Jesus

  388. what to do.

  389. Now, that never goes well

  390. in the Gospels

  391. when you tell Jesus

  392. what to do.

  393. Look at verse 37.

  394. But he answered them,

  395. you give them

  396. something to eat.

  397. Wait.

  398. Wait, what?

  399. Jesus,

  400. you offered us rest.

  401. And now you want

  402. us to cater

  403. 5,000 people

  404. in the wilderness?

  405. You know when you're

  406. exhausted

  407. and life springs

  408. something on you?

  409. Back when our kids

  410. were little,

  411. we had this getaway plan.

  412. My wife was grinding

  413. in her job.

  414. I was trying to work

  415. on a PhD

  416. while also working

  417. part-time.

  418. We had two little ones.

  419. We were exhausted.

  420. And we had this weekend

  421. on the calendar.

  422. We're going to go

  423. to a lake house.

  424. We're going to go

  425. to a lake house.

  426. We're so excited.

  427. There's beautiful

  428. waterside views.

  429. We're just going to sit

  430. in the window

  431. and just watch the lake.

  432. That's all we wanted.

  433. We're still ready.

  434. And the morning

  435. we're about to leave,

  436. my wife wakes up

  437. with a fever.

  438. A fever.

  439. I still feel

  440. the disappointment

  441. and the rage.

  442. Like,

  443. I'm mad at God,

  444. but she's,

  445. I was a very,

  446. very terrible husband

  447. in this moment.

  448. I'm like,

  449. this is your,

  450. you're sick

  451. and you're ruining

  452. everything.

  453. Now I'm solo parenting

  454. this weekend

  455. with two babies.

  456. Right?

  457. This is the opposite

  458. of that.

  459. This is what the disciples

  460. are feeling.

  461. Like,

  462. Jesus,

  463. we want rest.

  464. We're tired.

  465. And now,

  466. you want us to feed

  467. these people?

  468. What is Jesus doing?

  469. Why is he moving

  470. the finish line

  471. on them?

  472. Right?

  473. They're on fumes.

  474. They're running a marathon.

  475. They see the finish line.

  476. All of a sudden,

  477. Jesus is like,

  478. nope.

  479. Why?

  480. You see,

  481. we think rest

  482. comes from changing

  483. our circumstances.

  484. Don't we?

  485. Go on the vacation.

  486. Get away from the demands.

  487. Oftentimes,

  488. one of the primary ways

  489. that our culture

  490. envisions rest

  491. is really escapism.

  492. It's escapism.

  493. But you know

  494. that doesn't always work.

  495. Right?

  496. On vacation,

  497. you are still

  498. the same person.

  499. Your kid is still

  500. going to tantrum.

  501. Or maybe your spouse

  502. is going to tantrum.

  503. Or maybe you're

  504. going to tantrum.

  505. The scenery changes,

  506. but your soul

  507. doesn't.

  508. Jesus isn't being

  509. cruel here.

  510. He's exposing

  511. the poverty

  512. of our rest.

  513. And he subverts

  514. their notions

  515. of rest

  516. in two ways.

  517. First,

  518. there's self-protection.

  519. The disciples' instinct

  520. are like,

  521. hey,

  522. let's send them away.

  523. Let's send them away.

  524. Then we'll get rest.

  525. And we do that too,

  526. right?

  527. We think that rest

  528. comes from self-protection.

  529. I've got to block

  530. off my time.

  531. I have to have

  532. better boundaries.

  533. But Jesus

  534. calls them

  535. to compassion.

  536. To feel

  537. for others' rest.

  538. There's a contrast there.

  539. When Jesus

  540. sees the crowd,

  541. it says he saw them

  542. and had compassion

  543. because they were sheep

  544. without a shepherd.

  545. Actually,

  546. the Sabbath command

  547. in the Old Testament,

  548. in the law,

  549. the two commandments,

  550. it's the first law,

  551. the commandment,

  552. to mention others.

  553. All

  554. the others

  555. to this point

  556. mention God alone.

  557. It's your vertical.

  558. The Sabbath rest,

  559. he says,

  560. God says,

  561. remember the Sabbath day

  562. you shouldn't work

  563. and neither should

  564. anyone in your charge.

  565. Not your spouse

  566. or your child

  567. or your employee

  568. or your servant

  569. or guest.

  570. In other words,

  571. compassion

  572. was built

  573. into the Sabbath law.

  574. Jesus

  575. got this.

  576. This is why,

  577. when did Jesus

  578. heal?

  579. He healed people

  580. on the Sabbath.

  581. It angered the Pharisees,

  582. but he was restoring

  583. the meaning

  584. of the Sabbath.

  585. The Sabbath

  586. is about serving

  587. other people's rest.

  588. It's giving yourself

  589. so that someone else

  590. can rest.

  591. You see,

  592. the world says

  593. to us

  594. that rest comes

  595. from self-care.

  596. Camper yourself,

  597. indulge yourself,

  598. treat yourself,

  599. in the words of Donna

  600. in Parks and Rec.

  601. There's a whole lot

  602. less millennials

  603. in this room

  604. than there is

  605. in my church.

  606. Parks and Rec.

  607. It's a great show.

  608. Great philosophical show there.

  609. Jesus says,

  610. look to give rest.

  611. Look to give rest.

  612. That's the backwards kingdom.

  613. Oftentimes,

  614. the way to get rest

  615. is to get rest.

  616. And we know this,

  617. right?

  618. Have you ever sacrificed

  619. this Saturday morning

  620. to help a friend move?

  621. Or maybe you stayed up late

  622. to fix a meal

  623. for someone else?

  624. It's tiring,

  625. but in a restful way.

  626. Like,

  627. you've done something

  628. good and beautiful.

  629. But the second thing

  630. he does,

  631. so he confronts their,

  632. subverts their

  633. self-protection.

  634. He also subverts

  635. their self-sufficiency.

  636. Jesus says,

  637. you feed them.

  638. And they're immediately like,

  639. we can't cater a party

  640. for thousands.

  641. We're in the middle

  642. of nowhere.

  643. And it would cost

  644. a fortune.

  645. A denarii

  646. is a day's wage.

  647. So 200 denarii,

  648. that's like a,

  649. that's almost

  650. an annual salary.

  651. We're going to,

  652. we're going to drop that.

  653. On this like,

  654. impulsive feeding

  655. these people?

  656. They don't have that.

  657. But Jesus knows that.

  658. He knows he's asked

  659. the impossible.

  660. And what if that's the point?

  661. He wants them to realize

  662. that they don't have

  663. what it takes.

  664. He wants them to come

  665. to the end of themselves.

  666. Listen,

  667. the self

  668. is our primary issue

  669. when it comes to rest.

  670. The self is exhausting.

  671. It's not your spouse

  672. or your kids

  673. or your boss

  674. or your parents,

  675. but you.

  676. You are your most

  677. worst enemy

  678. when it comes to rest.

  679. And the stronger

  680. your self is,

  681. your ego,

  682. your ambition,

  683. your reputation,

  684. the stronger

  685. your hold on life,

  686. the more you think

  687. that life is about you,

  688. the more exhausted

  689. you will be.

  690. Why?

  691. Because you're constantly

  692. trying to get what you want.

  693. The control.

  694. And you'll be constantly

  695. anxious

  696. that you won't get

  697. what you want.

  698. It's all up to you.

  699. You see,

  700. self-protection

  701. and self-sufficiency

  702. are really the same root.

  703. One says,

  704. I'll protect myself,

  705. and the other

  706. I'll provide

  707. for myself.

  708. And they're both exhausting.

  709. Both assume

  710. that I know it's best

  711. and I'll get my rest.

  712. And here's the deeper truth

  713. about rest and religion.

  714. Rest reveals

  715. your true religion.

  716. Where you rest,

  717. what you do

  718. to get rest,

  719. it actually says something

  720. about what you believe

  721. life is about,

  722. about who your God is,

  723. about where you get

  724. renovation,

  725. or restoration.

  726. Maybe you rest

  727. in your bank account.

  728. And you think,

  729. once I get this amount

  730. of money,

  731. then I can rest.

  732. And I can retire easy.

  733. Or maybe you look

  734. to your family.

  735. If I can just,

  736. if everyone,

  737. if all the members

  738. of my family

  739. can just be okay,

  740. then I can rest.

  741. Listen,

  742. that's a recipe

  743. for never resting.

  744. They will never

  745. be all okay,

  746. moms.

  747. All you anxious moms

  748. out there,

  749. they will never

  750. be all okay.

  751. If it's not money,

  752. you will never

  753. have enough to rest.

  754. You will never

  755. have enough.

  756. All these

  757. are forms

  758. of self-sufficiency.

  759. But the Bible

  760. says we're made

  761. to rest in God.

  762. That's what

  763. we are made for.

  764. The African theologian,

  765. St. Augustine,

  766. put it this way.

  767. You probably know this.

  768. He says,

  769. you've made us

  770. for yourself,

  771. O Lord,

  772. and our heart

  773. is restless

  774. until it rests

  775. in you.

  776. Any other thing

  777. that we rest in,

  778. our accomplishments,

  779. or our reputation,

  780. or our pleasure,

  781. it will ultimately

  782. leave us

  783. restless.

  784. Because we were

  785. made to rest

  786. in God alone.

  787. So Jesus

  788. subverts

  789. these false

  790. notions of rest

  791. because he loves us.

  792. Which brings us

  793. to the surprise

  794. in our last point,

  795. the shepherd

  796. of rest.

  797. So Jesus

  798. gives them

  799. an impossible task

  800. and they bring it

  801. back to him.

  802. Verse 37.

  803. Should we go

  804. and buy this?

  805. 200 denarii

  806. worth of bread?

  807. And Jesus

  808. says, no.

  809. Go see what

  810. we have on hand.

  811. And they come

  812. back

  813. with five loaves

  814. and two fish.

  815. This is a very

  816. pitiful haul.

  817. There are

  818. 5,000 men.

  819. We don't know

  820. how many others

  821. and that's all

  822. the food they have.

  823. This is a

  824. massive failure.

  825. Okay?

  826. Appearance

  827. throughout.

  828. They brought

  829. no snacks.

  830. Then what

  831. does Jesus

  832. do?

  833. Look at verse

  834. 39.

  835. Then he

  836. commanded them

  837. all to sit

  838. down in groups

  839. in the green grass.

  840. And they sit

  841. down.

  842. Verse 41.

  843. Jesus takes

  844. the five loaves

  845. and the two

  846. fish.

  847. He looked up

  848. to heaven

  849. and said a

  850. blessing and

  851. broke the loaves

  852. and gave them

  853. to the disciples

  854. to set before

  855. the people.

  856. Jesus breaks

  857. off piece

  858. after piece

  859. after piece.

  860. And the

  861. disciples pass

  862. the meal out

  863. to the people.

  864. Can you see

  865. this in your

  866. mind?

  867. Imagine a

  868. beautiful field

  869. of soft

  870. green grass.

  871. It's like

  872. Berkeley and

  873. March.

  874. Clumps of

  875. people seated

  876. hungry and

  877. hopeful.

  878. All eyes

  879. on Jesus.

  880. Mark usually

  881. doesn't fill us

  882. in on the

  883. condition of the

  884. grass.

  885. Why does he say

  886. green grass?

  887. It's one of

  888. several Easter

  889. eggs within this

  890. passage.

  891. The line in

  892. verse 36.

  893. They were like

  894. sheep without a

  895. shepherd.

  896. shepherd.

  897. Jesus has a

  898. great herd of

  899. people on

  900. green grass.

  901. And they're

  902. beside the

  903. water, still

  904. water.

  905. And this

  906. shepherd is

  907. preparing a

  908. table for his

  909. people.

  910. This whole

  911. passage evokes

  912. Psalm 23,

  913. the most

  914. famous of

  915. psalms.

  916. The Lord is

  917. my shepherd.

  918. I shall not

  919. want.

  920. He makes me

  921. lie down in

  922. green and

  923. green pastures.

  924. He leads me

  925. beside still

  926. waters.

  927. He restores

  928. my soul.

  929. He prepares

  930. a table before

  931. me.

  932. My cup

  933. overflows.

  934. Psalm 23 is

  935. the premier

  936. psalm of

  937. rest, of

  938. peace, of

  939. provision.

  940. You see, when

  941. you have the

  942. Lord as your

  943. shepherd, there

  944. is rest and

  945. peace and

  946. ample provision.

  947. Mark is

  948. telling us who

  949. Jesus is

  950. here.

  951. He is the

  952. shepherd of

  953. Psalm 23.

  954. He's the

  955. God who

  956. fed Israel

  957. with manna.

  958. Remember that

  959. in the

  960. wilderness?

  961. How God

  962. miraculously

  963. rains down

  964. bread?

  965. And then here

  966. in the

  967. wilderness,

  968. Jesus, not

  969. raining down

  970. bread, but he

  971. is multiplying

  972. abundantly,

  973. miraculously.

  974. Why?

  975. Because he's

  976. the good

  977. shepherd.

  978. He is the

  979. Lord.

  980. He is God.

  981. Mark is

  982. making a

  983. claim about

  984. Jesus'

  985. identity.

  986. Jesus is

  987. making a

  988. claim about

  989. his identity.

  990. The shepherd

  991. has finally

  992. come.

  993. He is not

  994. merely performing

  995. a miracle.

  996. He is telling

  997. us who he

  998. is.

  999. And he

  1000. is God.

  1001. He is

  1002. the manna

  1003. giver.

  1004. And the

  1005. bread he

  1006. gives is

  1007. the bread

  1008. of life.

  1009. What about

  1010. rest?

  1011. You know,

  1012. the disciples

  1013. never get

  1014. the retreat

  1015. Jesus

  1016. promised.

  1017. Or did

  1018. they?

  1019. Jesus

  1020. says,

  1021. come away

  1022. and rest.

  1023. And then

  1024. comes the

  1025. crowd, the

  1026. teaching, the

  1027. hungry people,

  1028. an impossible

  1029. task, the

  1030. serving food,

  1031. and the

  1032. cleanup.

  1033. But it

  1034. says, and

  1035. they all

  1036. ate and

  1037. were satisfied.

  1038. They all

  1039. ate and

  1040. were satisfied.

  1041. That includes

  1042. the disciples.

  1043. And that

  1044. word satisfied,

  1045. the Greek

  1046. means filled,

  1047. gorged.

  1048. It's that

  1049. pleasant feeling

  1050. when you

  1051. haven't eaten

  1052. all day and

  1053. you come home

  1054. and you have

  1055. a tasty

  1056. meal.

  1057. One that

  1058. you get

  1059. seconds on

  1060. and you

  1061. just sit

  1062. back and

  1063. you're like,

  1064. yes, life

  1065. is good.

  1066. They're

  1067. satisfied.

  1068. Jesus

  1069. always

  1070. fulfills

  1071. his promise,

  1072. although it

  1073. is rarely

  1074. in the way

  1075. that we

  1076. think it's

  1077. going to

  1078. be.

  1079. Rest did

  1080. not come

  1081. from a

  1082. retreat.

  1083. It came

  1084. from him.

  1085. This rest

  1086. that he was

  1087. offering is

  1088. fulfilled in

  1089. him.

  1090. He gives

  1091. them himself.

  1092. He is the

  1093. shepherd who

  1094. alone can

  1095. give his

  1096. sheep rest.

  1097. He is the

  1098. manna giver

  1099. who gives

  1100. the bread

  1101. of life.

  1102. It satisfies

  1103. not only our

  1104. stomach but our

  1105. souls.

  1106. rest is a

  1107. person.

  1108. The miracle

  1109. here is not

  1110. that Jesus

  1111. gives exhausted

  1112. people a day

  1113. off.

  1114. The miracle

  1115. is that Jesus

  1116. gives exhausted

  1117. people himself.

  1118. Himself.

  1119. He is God

  1120. come in the

  1121. flesh.

  1122. That quote

  1123. about Augustine

  1124. that our

  1125. souls were

  1126. meant to

  1127. rest in God.

  1128. The way we

  1129. rest in God

  1130. is through

  1131. Jesus.

  1132. It's only

  1133. in Jesus.

  1134. He is how

  1135. we enter into

  1136. the rest of

  1137. God.

  1138. And this

  1139. rest, if you

  1140. think about

  1141. it, it's

  1142. freely given.

  1143. It's

  1144. utterly free.

  1145. What did the

  1146. crowds contribute

  1147. to this meal?

  1148. Nothing.

  1149. What did the

  1150. disciples contribute?

  1151. Their

  1152. skepticism.

  1153. Jesus

  1154. satisfies

  1155. for free.

  1156. He does

  1157. all the

  1158. work.

  1159. And actually

  1160. verse 41 is

  1161. the foreshadowing

  1162. of another

  1163. work.

  1164. Jesus in

  1165. 41, he

  1166. takes the

  1167. bread, he

  1168. blesses it, he

  1169. breaks it, and

  1170. then gives it.

  1171. And that's the

  1172. same order as

  1173. Mark 14 at the

  1174. Last Supper.

  1175. Jesus takes the

  1176. bread, blesses

  1177. it, breaks it,

  1178. and gives it.

  1179. But then he

  1180. says, this is

  1181. my body.

  1182. See, at the end

  1183. of Mark, we

  1184. find out the

  1185. bread is

  1186. really Jesus'

  1187. own life

  1188. given for

  1189. us on the

  1190. cross.

  1191. My body

  1192. broken for

  1193. you, my

  1194. body given

  1195. for you.

  1196. And on the

  1197. cross, Jesus

  1198. did all the

  1199. work of

  1200. salvation, that

  1201. you might

  1202. rest.

  1203. And what did

  1204. Jesus cry on

  1205. the cross?

  1206. He said, it

  1207. is finished.

  1208. My work is

  1209. finished.

  1210. Your work is

  1211. finished.

  1212. finished.

  1213. His work of

  1214. salvation is a

  1215. finished work, and

  1216. you don't have to

  1217. add anything to

  1218. it.

  1219. But Jesus did

  1220. not stay dead.

  1221. In order for him

  1222. to be the good

  1223. shepherd, he had

  1224. to walk through

  1225. the valley of

  1226. the shadow of

  1227. death and

  1228. conquer it.

  1229. Conquer it.

1230. And so he is a

  1231. living shepherd.

  1232. He's a living

  1233. shepherd.

  1234. And he did all

  1235. this that you

  1236. might have

  1237. rest.

  1238. That you may

  1239. rest from all

  1240. your strivings to

  1241. justify yourself.

  1242. Rest from all

  1243. the guilt before

  1244. God and before

  1245. others.

  1246. Rest from all

  1247. the shame before

  1248. man.

  1249. Rest from all

  1250. the condemnation

  1251. that you feel,

  1252. the self-hatred.

  1253. Rest from all

  1254. the fear and

  1255. the anxiety.

  1256. You can have

  1257. rest.

  1258. All you must

  1259. do is become

  1260. his sheep,

  1261. is to accept

  1262. the shepherd

  1263. as Jesus.

  1264. Jesus.

  1265. And he says,

  1266. I will do

  1267. everything for

  1268. you.

  1269. It's all you

  1270. have to do.

  1271. This is why

  1272. Jesus invites us

  1273. in Matthew 11,

  1274. 28.

  1275. He says,

  1276. come to me.

  1277. Come to me.

  1278. All who labor

  1279. and are heavy

  1280. laden.

  1281. All of you who

  1282. are cynical

  1283. and exhausted.

  1284. All of you who

  1285. are broken

  1286. and bruised.

  1287. Come to me

  1288. and I will

  1289. give you

  1290. rest.

  1291. Take my

  1292. yoke upon

  1293. you and

  1294. learn from

  1295. me.

  1296. For I am

  1297. gentle and

  1298. lowly in

  1299. heart and

  1300. you will

  1301. find rest

  1302. for your

  1303. souls.

  1304. I want to

  1305. end asking

  1306. the question,

  1307. what does it

  1308. look like to

  1309. rest in

  1310. Jesus?

  1311. And I want

  1312. to give you

  1313. three quick

  1314. portraits.

  1315. First,

  1316. come to the

  1317. shepherd.

  1318. Maybe you're

  1319. not a Christian

  1320. this morning.

  1321. What does it

  1322. look like to

  1323. rest in

  1324. Jesus?

  1325. Let me ask

  1326. this question.

  1327. Who is your

  1328. shepherd?

  1329. Do you have

  1330. one?

  1331. Who is

  1332. looking out

  1333. for you?

  1334. Are you on

  1335. your own?

  1336. You either

  1337. have God as

  1338. your shepherd

  1339. or you have

  1340. no one.

  1341. Is that

  1342. you?

  1343. Jesus wants

  1344. to be your

  1345. shepherd this

  1346. morning.

  1347. He offers

  1348. you true

  1349. rest.

  1350. And for you

  1351. resting in

  1352. Jesus is

  1353. simply coming

  1354. to him.

  1355. All you

  1356. must do

  1357. is simply

  1358. ask him

  1359. for rest.

  1360. And you

  1361. must know

  1362. it's dangerous.

  1363. It's a

  1364. surrender of

  1365. control.

  1366. You will

  1367. no longer

  1368. define your

  1369. own rest.

  1370. But the

  1371. gains are

  1372. tremendous.

  1373. Jesus is a

  1374. generous shepherd.

  1375. He provides

  1376. far beyond

  1377. our imagination.

  1378. Look at how

  1379. many baskets

  1380. they took up.

  1381. There were

  1382. 12 full

  1383. baskets.

  1384. That's

  1385. symbolic.

  1386. They say,

  1387. hey,

  1388. Jesus is

  1389. extravagant.

  1390. You will

  1391. have

  1392. leftovers

  1393. when you

  1394. come to

  1395. the shepherd.

  1396. And you

  1397. will know

  1398. true

  1399. satisfaction

  1400. and true

  1401. filling deep

  1402. in your

  1403. soul.

  1404. Stop

  1405. trying to

  1406. provide your

  1407. own salvation.

  1408. Or maybe

  1409. secondly,

  1410. maybe you

  1411. are a

  1412. Christian.

  1413. And the

  1414. lesson here is

  1415. to rest for

  1416. the shepherd.

  1417. A lot of

  1418. us are

  1419. learning to

  1420. daily rest

  1421. in Jesus.

  1422. It is a

  1423. daily

  1424. discipline.

  1425. In the

  1426. wilderness,

  1427. God gave

  1428. manna every

  1429. day.

  1430. And Jesus

  1431. taught us

  1432. to pray.

  1433. Give us

  1434. this day

  1435. our daily

  1436. bread.

  1437. Which means

  1438. that you

  1439. need him

  1440. every day.

  1441. You need

  1442. him every

  1443. day.

  1444. So many

  1445. of us

  1446. live life

  1447. like the

  1448. disciples.

  1449. All we

  1450. see is

  1451. the hard

  1452. facts.

  1453. Hey,

  1454. we need

  1455. 200

  1456. denarii

  1457. to make

  1458. this

  1459. happen.

  1460. But

  1461. resting

  1462. in Jesus

  1463. is trusting

  1464. him as

  1465. the provider

  1466. for

  1467. everything.

  1468. Everything

  1469. you need.

  1470. Berkeley

  1471. people,

  1472. one of

  1473. the primary

  1474. problems

  1475. for us

  1476. is that

  1477. we don't

  1478. realize how

  1479. much we

  1480. need Jesus.

  1481. We think

  1482. because of

  1483. our skill

  1484. and our

  1485. bank

  1486. accounts,

  1487. we can

  1488. provide for

  1489. ourselves.

  1490. But it's

  1491. an illusion.

  1492. The way

  1493. that you

  1494. are meant

  1495. to live

  1496. is actually

  1497. to live

  1498. daily,

  1499. asking Jesus

  1500. for his

  1501. provision.

  1502. No matter

  1503. how big

  1504. your bank

  1505. account,

  1506. no matter

  1507. how skilled

  1508. you are,

  1509. intelligent,

  1510. this is

  1511. what life

  1512. is.

  1513. And the

  1514. rest in

  1515. Jesus is

  1516. actually

  1517. prayer.

  1518. That's

  1519. how we

  1520. rest in

  1521. Jesus.

  1522. It's

  1523. praying,

  1524. seeking

  1525. him,

  1526. pouring out

  1527. your life

  1528. to him.

  1529. So many

  1530. of us,

  1531. our prayer

  1532. life is

  1533. so deficient.

  1534. We're like

  1535. whispering up

  1536. little SOS

  1537. prayers here

  1538. and there.

  1539. That's not

  1540. how life

  1541. resting is.

  1542. Resting in

  1543. Jesus is

  1544. these prolonged

  1545. periods of

  1546. Jesus,

  1547. I need

  1548. you.

  1549. I need

  1550. you.

  1551. It is

  1552. pouring out

  1553. your heart,

  1554. your weariness,

  1555. your lack,

  1556. your thanksgiving,

  1557. your praise,

  1558. and saying,

  1559. Jesus,

  1560. I need you

  1561. today.

  1562. I need you

  1563. for my

  1564. kids.

  1565. I need you

  1566. for my

  1567. work.

  1568. That is

  1569. rest.

  1570. And when

  1571. you rise

  1572. from prayer,

  1573. you will

  1574. have been

  1575. with the

  1576. shepherd and

  1577. you will

  1578. feel rest.

  1579. He is

  1580. rest.

  1581. And finally,

  1582. we need to

  1583. rethink our

  1584. rest.

  1585. Remember how

  1586. Jesus subverts

  1587. our instincts

  1588. about rest?

  1589. We think

  1590. that rest

  1591. comes from

  1592. getting away,

  1593. going on

  1594. vacation.

  1595. Why?

  1596. Because we

  1597. listen to the

  1598. credit card

  1599. companies.

  1600. It tells us

  1601. all about

  1602. this amazing

  1603. rest,

  1604. right?

  1605. Go to a

  1606. resort and

  1607. you will

  1608. feel rested.

  1609. You might

  1610. not.

  1611. In fact,

  1612. being in

  1613. vacation mode

  1614. is a very

  1615. spiritually

  1616. dangerous

  1617. mode to

  1618. be in.

  1619. You know

  1620. why?

  1621. Because we

  1622. tend to

  1623. indulge,

  1624. to splurge,

  1625. we overeat.

  1626. There's a

  1627. sin called

  1628. gluttony that

  1629. no one

  1630. talks about.

  1631. We over

  1632. drink.

  1633. Our desires

  1634. are inflamed.

  1635. And we

  1636. lack the

  1637. routines that

  1638. keep our

  1639. desires and

  1640. indulgences in

  1641. check.

  1642. Some of us

  1643. become little

  1644. tyrants,

  1645. bossing everyone

  1646. around.

  1647. We've got to

  1648. keep on

  1649. scheduled.

  1650. This is how

  1651. vacation happens.

  1652. Others become

  1653. hedonists,

  1654. right?

  1655. Others become

  1656. slothful and

  1657. lazy.

  1658. But at the

  1659. heart of it,

  1660. the reason it's

  1661. dangerous,

  1662. vacations are

  1663. not bad.

  1664. We need

  1665. them.

  1666. But at the

  1667. heart of it,

  1668. it becomes my

  1669. kingdom come,

  1670. my will be

  1671. done.

  1672. That's not

  1673. where rest

  1674. comes from.

  1675. Rest comes

  1676. from surrender.

  1677. Your kingdom

  1678. come,

  1679. your will be

  1680. done.

  1681. It comes

  1682. from Jesus.

  1683. So stop

  1684. asking vacations

  1685. to provide what

  1686. only the shepherd

  1687. can give you.

  1688. Jesus offers you

  1689. rest this morning.

  1690. He wants to

  1691. give you rest.

  1692. He offers it

  1693. freely.

  1694. So friends,

  1695. sit in his

  1696. green grass.

  1697. Look at his

  1698. hands of

  1699. provision.

  1700. He says,

  1701. I will feed

  1702. you.

  1703. I will satisfy

  1704. you.

  1705. I will give

  1706. you rest.

  1707. Would you

  1708. pray with me?

  1709. Oh,

  1710. Father in

  1711. heaven,

  1712. we are so

  1713. silly about

  1714. what we

  1715. think will

  1716. satisfy us.

  1717. Oh,

  1718. Father,

  1719. we thank

  1720. you that

  1721. when you

  1722. look at

  1723. us,

  1724. you don't

  1725. condemn

  1726. us,

  1727. you see

  1728. us through

  1729. the eyes

  1730. of compassion.

  1731. Oh,

  1732. Father,

  1733. and your

  1734. Sabbath

  1735. is actually

  1736. work to

  1737. give us

  1738. rest.

  1739. Oh,

  1740. Father,

  1741. I pray

  1742. that we

  1743. would avail

  1744. ourselves

  1745. of that

  1746. rest,

  1747. even this

  1748. morning.

  1749. Oh,

  1750. Jesus,

  1751. you are

  1752. a provider

  1753. beyond our

  1754. imagination.

  1755. Oh,

  1756. Father,

  1757. you love

  1758. us so

  1759. much,

  1760. so much

  1761. that you

  1762. died for

  1763. us.

  1764. Oh,

  1765. Father,

  1766. we come

  1767. to you.

  1768. Please feed

  1769. us with

  1770. Jesus.

  1771. And I do

  1772. pray for

  1773. Christ's

  1774. church as

  1775. they go

  1776. away to

  1777. a desolate

  1778. place,

  1779. that they

  1780. would meet

  1781. Jesus

  1782. there,

  1783. that he

  1784. would be

  1785. where they

  1786. get rest,

  1787. that they

  1788. would enjoy

  1789. the love

  1790. and the

  1791. beauty of

  1792. your covenant

  1793. grace to

  1794. us.

  1795. Oh,

  1796. Lord,

  1797. we love

  1798. you.

  1799. In

  1800. Christ's

  1801. name we

  1802. pray.

  1803. Amen.
