  5. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Exodus, portions of chapters 3 and 12,

  6. as printed in your liturgy.

  7. A reading from the book of Exodus.

  8. Do not come any closer, God said.

  9. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

  10. Then he said,

  11. I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

  12. At this, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.

  13. Then the Lord said,

  14. I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt,

  15. and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters.

  16. I know their sufferings, and I have come down.

  17. To deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians,

  18. and to bring them up out of that land,

  19. to a good land, a broad land,

  20. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  21. Moses said to God,

  22. Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them,

  23. The God of your fathers has sent me to you.

  24. And they ask me,

  25. What is his name?

  26. Then what shall I say to them?

  27. God said to Moses,

  28. I am who I am.

  29. This is what you are to say to the Israelites.

  30. I am has sent me to you.

  31. Tell all the congregation of Israel,

  32. that on the tenth day of this month,

  33. every man shall take a lamb,

  34. according to their fathers' houses,

  35. a lamb for a household.

  36. Then they shall take some of the blood,

  37. and put it on the two doorposts,

  38. and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

  39. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night,

  40. and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,

  41. both man and beast.

  42. And on all the gods of Egypt,

  43. I will execute judgments.

  44. I am the Lord.

  45. The blood shall be a sign for you

  46. on the houses where you are.

  47. And when I see the blood,

  48. I will pass over you,

  49. and no plague will befall you to destroy you.

  50. When I strike the land of Egypt.

  51. When you enter the land

  52. that the Lord will give you as he promised,

  53. observe this ceremony.

  54. And when your children ask you,

  55. what does this ceremony mean to you?

  56. Then tell them,

  57. it is a Passover sacrifice to the Lord

  58. who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt

  59. and spared our homes

  60. when he struck down the Egyptians.

  61. Then the people bowed down and worshipped.

  62. The grass withers and the flowers fade.

  63. But the word of our God stands forever.

  64. Good morning to you all.

  65. I am the better looking pastor Andrew referred to a moment ago.

  66. And my name is Jonathan.

  67. We are going to be starting a new sermon series today

  68. in the book of Exodus

  69. and on the Ten Commandments

  70. over the coming weeks and months.

  71. We are going to go all the way through

  72. all ten of the commands

  73. because the church has historically put these

  74. at the center of her teaching ministry.

  75. Especially for children

  76. and for new believers.

  77. For virtually all of church history.

  78. When people ask,

  79. how do we do discipleship?

  80. How do we teach our kids the Bible?

  81. What do new Christians need to know about the Lord?

  82. The answers have always included

  83. the twelve articles of faith in the creed,

  84. the six petitions in the Lord's Prayer,

  85. and the ten commandments

  86. that we find in the Bible.

  87. And so, basically,

  88. the church has always said,

  89. we need to tell people

  90. who God is, the creed.

  91. We need to tell people

  92. how to talk to Him,

  93. the Lord's Prayer.

  94. And we need to tell them

  95. how to live to please God.

  96. The Ten Commandments.

  97. And you remember

  98. how the Ten Commandments begin,

  99. hopefully.

  100. These are famous words.

  101. It begins,

  102. I am the Lord, your God,

  103. who brought you out of Egypt,

  104. out of the land of slavery.

  105. And we're just going to spend

  106. the next few weeks

  107. on that sentence.

  108. I am the Lord, your God,

  109. who brought you out of Egypt,

  110. out of the land of slavery.

  111. And we're going to try to get

  112. into our heads

  113. and into our hearts

  114. the details of who this God is,

  115. what He did to bring

  116. His covenant people

  117. out of their oppressive bondage

  118. and into freedom.

  119. And as we just sit

  120. in this central story

  121. of redemption

  122. and of deliverance

  123. in the Old Testament,

  124. as we connect

  125. that central story up

  126. with the central story

  127. in the New Testament

  128. of redemption and deliverance

  129. in Jesus Christ,

  130. we hope that

  131. we will begin

  132. to have a fresh appreciation

  133. for this life of freedom

  134. that God intends

  135. for His people.

  136. And that we'll begin

  137. to see these Ten Commandments

  138. that He's given us

  139. not as a burden,

  140. but as a blessing.

  141. Not as a restraint,

  142. but as the pathway

  143. to freedom.

  144. And that we'd see them

  145. not as a cold list

  146. of hard laws

  147. in the abstract,

  148. but rather that we would see

  149. that these are words

  150. given to us

  151. by the lover

  152. of our souls

  153. who wants what's best

  154. for us.

  155. That we'd see them

  156. as the wise

  157. and loving counsel

  158. of one who's redeemed us

  159. and enabled us

  160. to call Him

  161. our Heavenly Father.

  162. We'd see these commands

  163. as the way that God

  164. intends to preserve us

  165. in the freedom

  166. that He's won for us.

  167. So that's where

  168. we're going to be going.

  169. And if you want to,

  170. we just sort of had

  171. to pick up

  172. little bits and pieces

  173. of these passages

  174. this morning,

  175. but if you want to follow

  176. in your pew Bible,

  177. feel free to pull that out.

  178. We're going to be

  179. in Exodus chapter 3

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  180. and Moses' encounter

  181. with God

  182. at the burning bush.

  183. And then we're going

  184. to turn to Exodus chapter 12

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  185. where we see God's work

  186. of judgment and mercy

  187. in the Passover lamb.

  188. And I may regret

  189. trying to take on

  190. two of the biggest chapters

  191. in the Bible

  192. in one sermon,

  193. but we'll see about that.

  194. We're going to talk about

  195. the God who comes down,

  196. the God who passes over,

  197. and the God

  198. who gives freedom.

  199. Who is this God

  200. of the Bible?

  201. He's the God

  202. who comes down,

  203. He's the God

  204. who passes over,

  205. and He's the God

  206. who gives freedom.

  207. And so let's talk

  208. about the God

  209. who comes down.

  210. Who is this God

  211. who gives the Ten Commandments

  212. from this fiery mountain

  213. in Exodus chapter 20?

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  214. He's the same God

  215. who reveals Himself

  216. to Moses

  217. at this fiery bush

  218. in Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  219. And that fire,

  220. which you see

  221. throughout this book

  222. of Exodus,

  223. the fire is a symbol

  224. of the presence of God.

  225. It's a symbol

  226. of the holy presence of God.

  227. And if you just look

  228. at verse 5

  229. in chapter 3,

  230. it says,

  231. Do not come any closer.

  232. Take off your sandals

  233. for the place

  234. where you're standing

  235. is holy ground.

  236. And then He said,

  237. I'm the God

  238. of your father,

  239. the God of Abraham,

  240. the God of Isaac,

  241. the God of Jacob.

  242. And at this,

  243. Moses hid his face

  244. because he was afraid

  245. to look at God.

  246. You notice,

  247. first of all,

  248. this is a personal

  249. and relational God.

  250. He's revealing Himself.

  251. He's communicating Himself

  252. to this individual

  253. named Moses

  254. just as He communicated Himself

  255. to Abraham

  256. and to Isaac

  257. and to Jacob

  258. because He's present to them.

  259. He's drawing near to them

  260. and He wants

  261. to be known by them.

  262. He wants to be loved by them

  263. in a personal relationship.

  264. He wants them to know His love.

  265. And yet,

  266. He's a fiery God.

  267. He's a holy God.

  268. He's this absolute

  269. and transcendent,

  270. infinite,

  271. and eternal God.

  272. And that's why this God says,

  273. Moses,

  274. come close,

  275. but don't come any closer.

  276. That's why He says,

  277. Moses,

  278. come.

  279. I want you to be with me,

  280. but you've got to

  281. take off your shoes.

  282. And why does Moses hide his face?

  283. Why is he afraid

  284. to look directly at God?

  285. Because he knows that

  286. I'm a mere creature

  287. and this is the Creator God.

  288. This is the Almighty God

  289. and I depend on Him

  290. for everything,

  291. for my every breath.

  292. But more than that,

  293. what we really need to see

  294. is that Moses knows

  295. this God is holy.

  296. This God is pure.

  297. This God is perfect.

  298. He's righteous

  299. and He's just.

  300. And Moses knows

  301. and we know

  302. that we're not.

  303. That we were made

  304. for this high

  305. and noble purpose

  306. to be the image of God

  307. reflecting all of who God is

  308. into this world.

  309. And yet,

  310. from that high place

  311. we've fallen so low.

  312. From that noble calling,

  313. we've rebelled

  314. so drastically.

  315. And so now,

  316. our condition is that

  317. this image in us

  318. is distorted.

  319. This image is damaged

  320. so that we no longer

  321. perfectly reflect back to God

  322. His purity

  323. and His perfection

  324. and His holiness.

  325. And that's why

  326. Moses hides his face.

  327. The Scriptures tell us

  328. that the fear of the Lord

  329. is the beginning of wisdom.

  330. And Moses

  331. has an awe.

  332. He has a respect.

  333. He has a reverence

  334. for who this God

  335. actually is.

  336. And modern people,

  337. I think,

  338. are kind of the opposite

  339. of Moses, right?

  340. We tend to think

  341. that we can just sort of

  342. casually waltz into

  343. the presence of God

  344. and that our being there

  345. with God

  346. is a gift to God.

  347. Right?

  348. And that it's,

  349. we're gracing Him

  350. with our presence.

  351. And the Scriptures

  352. just have the exact

  353. opposite view.

  354. Right?

  355. Jeremiah,

  356. the prophet Jeremiah

  357. said in Jeremiah 10.10,

  358. the Lord is the true

  359. and living God.

  360. He's the eternal King.

  361. Hebrews 12.29

  362. says that our God

  363. is a consuming fire.

  364. And so it's only right,

  365. Moses would tell us

  366. if you're going to come

  367. to God,

  368. it's only right to

  369. humble yourself

  370. before this eternal King

  371. whose blazing glory,

  372. his blazing fire

  373. of His holiness

  374. and His purity

  375. is such that you just,

  376. you can't just come

  377. to Him as you are.

  378. You've got to take

  379. off your shoes.

  380. And we should be rejoicing

  381. that He's even made it

  382. possible for us

  383. to come into His presence.

  384. Look down in verse 13.

  385. Moses enters into

  386. this dialogue with God

  387. and he says to God,

  388. suppose I go to the Israelites

  389. and I say to them,

  390. the God of your fathers

  391. has sent me to you

  392. and they ask me,

  393. what is His name?

  394. Then what shall I tell them?

  395. And God says to Moses,

  396. I am who I am.

  397. This is what you're to say

  398. to the Israelites.

  399. I am has sent me to you.

  400. We can spend the rest

  401. of the sermon on that,

  402. but we won't.

  403. What is my name?

  404. I am who I am.

  405. I am without beginning.

  406. I am without limitation.

  407. I am without equal.

  408. I am dependent on nothing

  409. and all depends on me.

  410. I am the self-existent,

  411. unseen,

  412. unchanging,

  413. dynamic,

  414. living being,

  415. ever-present,

  416. ever-active.

  417. And Moses,

  418. I want you to tell them,

  419. I am over you

  420. and I am right here with you

  421. and I am for you,

  422. all-sufficient

  423. and omni-competent

  424. for your every need.

  425. That's who I am.

  426. That's my name.

  427. Now,

  428. if I give you my name,

  429. okay,

  430. my name is Jonathan Barry St. Clair.

  431. And if I give you my name,

  432. I'm inviting you

  433. into a relationship with me.

  434. I'm admitting a desire

  435. for accessibility

  436. and vulnerability

  437. that I want to be known

  438. and loved by you

  439. and I want to know you

  440. and I want to love you,

  441. right?

  442. If I give you my name.

  443. But if you hear someone

  444. call me Johnny,

  445. not Jonathan Barry St. Clair,

  446. but you hear somebody

  447. call me Johnny

  448. or J

  449. or JB

  450. or Johnny Bravo

  451. or J-Rock

  452. as I was called in college.

  453. There's hundreds of nicknames,

  454. okay?

  455. If you hear someone

  456. call me by those names,

  457. you know that

  458. we're family,

  459. right?

  460. We have the closest

  461. and most intimate

  462. relationship possible

  463. and that's basically

  464. what's happening here.

  465. This holy God

  466. who speaks to Moses

  467. from the burning bush,

  468. he says,

  469. I want you to call me

  470. by my special name.

  471. I want to be

  472. on a first name basis

  473. with you

  474. and I want you

  475. to call me

  476. I am

  477. who I am.

  478. And if you call me

  479. by my special name,

  480. then you know

  481. that we have

  482. this exclusive

  483. and intimate

  484. relationship

  485. with one another.

  486. And what is that

  487. relationship

  488. all about?

  489. Well,

  490. look at verse 7

  491. where God

  492. speaks to Moses

  493. and he says

  494. from this fiery bush

  495. this holy presence,

  496. he says,

  497. I have indeed

  498. seen the misery

  499. of my people in Egypt.

  500. I have heard them

  501. crying out

  502. because of their

  503. slave drivers

  504. and I am concerned

  505. about their suffering.

  506. This eternal,

  507. self-existent,

  508. holy God

  509. is also a compassionate God.

  510. He is also

  511. a caring God

  512. who graciously

  513. identifies himself

  514. with the needs

  515. and the pains

  516. of his people.

  517. He says,

  518. my people are

  519. experiencing misery

  520. and bondage

  521. and oppression

  522. and injustice

  523. and I want you

  524. to know

  525. I see them.

  526. And my people

  527. are crying out

  528. in these agonized

  529. pleas of helpless

  530. victims there

  531. in Egypt

  532. and I want you

  533. to know

  534. I hear them.

  535. He says,

  536. my people

  537. are suffering

  538. because they're

  539. stuck,

  540. they're trapped,

  541. they're bound

  542. and enslaved

  543. and not only

  544. are my eyes

  545. upon them,

  546. not only is my ear

  547. attentive to their cry

  548. but I'm concerned

  549. about them.

  550. I'm touched

  551. and I'm moved

  552. by their suffering.

  553. And that tells us

  554. that this is not

  555. the God of the deists

  556. who is remote

  557. and distant

  558. and unaffected

  559. by our sorrows

  560. and our prayers.

  561. No,

  562. he's emotionally

  563. involved with us.

  564. He is actively

  565. related to us.

  566. And this is not

  567. the God

  568. of pantheism.

  569. It's not the God

  570. of Buddhism

  571. that says

  572. actually your suffering

  573. is an illusion

  574. and somehow

  575. you need to

  576. transcend your suffering.

  577. No.

  578. This is also

  579. not the God

  580. of the materialist

  581. and secularism

  582. that says

  583. your suffering

  584. is just an accident.

  585. It's just a result

  586. of blind,

  587. pitiless indifference.

  588. And it has

  589. no meaning

  590. at all.

  591. In fact,

  592. the only meaning

  593. your suffering

  594. has is the meaning

  595. that you create

  596. and project

  597. onto your suffering.

  598. No,

  599. this is the one

  600. true living God

  601. of the Bible

  602. who sovereignly

  603. initiates

  604. this encounter

  605. with Moses

  606. in order to say

  607. I see the pain

  608. of my people

  609. and I'm entering

  610. into it.

  611. I hear

  612. their grief

  613. and I'm choosing

  614. to participate

  615. in it.

  616. I know

  617. the distress

  618. and the suffering

  619. of my beloved

  620. people

  621. and I'm embracing

  622. it now

  623. as my own.

  624. Friends,

  625. do you know

  626. this God

  627. who sees you

  628. and who hears you

  629. and who is concerned

  630. about you?

  631. Your depression

  632. and your anxiety,

  633. God says,

  634. I see you.

  635. Your loneliness

  636. and your grief,

  637. God says,

  638. I hear you.

  639. Your hurts

  640. from the past,

  641. your addictions

  642. in the present,

  643. your despair

  644. about the future,

  645. God says,

  646. I am concerned

  647. about you.

  648. And here

  649. to these Israelites

  650. who for 80 years

  651. at a minimum

  652. have experienced

  653. genocide,

  654. the genocide

  655. of their children,

  656. they've experienced

  657. miserable servitude,

  658. they've experienced

  659. abuse

  660. after abuse

  661. and they're wondering

  662. why God

  663. is this suffering

  664. so intense

  665. and God

  666. how long

  667. is this suffering

  668. going to

  669. continue

  670. and God

  671. says,

  672. I'm paying

  673. very careful

  674. attention

  675. to you.

  676. I am intensely

  677. and deeply

  678. concerned

  679. about you

  680. and I want

  681. you to know

  682. I have a plan

  683. and I have

  684. a purpose.

  685. And what exactly

  686. is that plan

  687. and that purpose?

  688. We'll look at verse 8.

  689. He says,

  690. so I have come down

  691. to rescue them

  692. from the land,

  693. the hand of the Egyptians

  694. and to bring them up

  695. to that,

  696. out of that land

  697. and into a good

  698. and spacious land,

  699. a land flowing

  700. with milk

  701. and honey.

  702. This is God's

  703. calling card.

  704. This is his brand.

  705. I am the God

  706. who comes down.

  707. I'm the come down

  708. to the rescue

  709. God.

  710. I'm the God

  711. who gets decisively

  712. involved

  713. and who intervenes

  714. and interferes

  715. in your life

  716. and in this world.

  717. I am this holy

  718. yet compassionate

  719. God

  720. and I am not

  721. a powerless

  722. pushover

  723. because I'm

  724. the sovereign

  725. of the universe.

  726. I'm the high king

  727. of heaven

  728. and when he sees

  729. that his people

  730. cannot save themselves,

  731. he comes down

  732. to rescue them

  733. with justice

  734. and mercy.

  735. And if you read

  736. from Exodus 3

  737. to Exodus 12,

  738. you know that

  739. this rescue operation

  740. he's declaring

  741. to them

  742. moves heaven

  743. and earth.

  744. Right?

  745. The creator

  746. is uncreating

  747. his creation

  748. with these 12 plagues

  749. of cosmic justice.

  750. He comes to

  751. turn this world

  752. empire upside

  753. down and inside

  754. out in order

  755. to set

  756. what's wrong

  757. right

  758. and to

  759. destroy

  760. the dark

  761. power that's

  762. destroying his

  763. people.

  764. And what does

  765. this God do

  766. when he comes

  767. down to the

  768. rescue?

  769. Does he

  770. just

  771. unleash a bunch

  772. of plagues

  773. and take them

  774. out into this

  775. howling wilderness,

  776. this chaotic

  777. wasteland

  778. and give them

  779. a bottle of water

  780. and a map

  781. and some matches

  782. and say,

  783. alright guys,

  784. you're on your own.

  785. Good luck.

  786. Hope you find

  787. your way.

  788. No,

  789. he completes

  790. what he begins.

  791. He finishes

  792. what he starts.

  793. He says to them

  794. in verse 8,

  795. see that I'm

  796. coming down

  797. in order to

  798. bring you up.

  799. I'm coming

  800. down in order

  801. that I might

  802. bring you up

  803. into this good

  804. and spacious

  805. place of freedom,

  806. this place

  807. of milk and honey.

  808. I want to bring

  809. you up into

  810. an abundant

  811. life,

  812. a life of

  813. blessing,

  814. a life of

  815. flourishing,

  816. a life of

  817. shalom,

  818. of peace with

  819. God and peace

  820. with each other

  821. and peace

  822. with yourself.

  823. That's what

  824. he's saying.

  825. The God of the

  826. Bible is a God

  827. who comes down

  828. with good news.

  829. He comes down

  830. with a message

  831. of hope,

  832. a message

  833. of redemption,

  834. a message

  835. of peace

  836. and this God,

  837. this I am

  838. who I am

  839. God is the

  840. father of

  841. Jesus Christ.

  842. This is the

  843. God who came

  844. down by the

  845. Holy Spirit

  846. to the womb

  847. of the Virgin

  848. Mary and took

  849. on our human

  850. flesh and our

  851. human nature.

  852. He's the God

  853. who came down

  854. in Jesus Christ

  855. to rescue us

  856. once and for

  857. all.

  858. Not just to

  859. break the grip

  860. of Egyptian

  861. tyrants and

  862. taskmasters.

  863. No, he came

  864. down to break

  865. the grip of

  866. sin and death

  867. in our lives.

  868. He came down

  869. in Jesus Christ

  870. not just to

  871. bring justice

  872. on us but to

  873. bear justice

  874. on his cross.

  875. All the bondage

  876. of our sin

  877. and our shame

  878. and our suffering

  879. and evil

  880. and death,

  881. Jesus took it

  882. on himself.

  883. He came down

  884. to do that

  885. and he came

  886. down in order

  887. that he might

  888. bring us up.

  889. Not just up

  890. into a freedom

  891. in the promised

  892. land but up

  893. into the freedom

  894. of his resurrection

  895. life.

  896. Up so that we

  897. might become

  898. new creatures

  899. in his new

  900. creation.

  901. That's what he

  902. wants to bring

  903. us up and

  904. into.

  905. And the reason

  906. I'm harping

  907. on this is

  908. because if you

  909. don't know

  910. this holy

  911. God,

  912. if you don't

  913. trust this

  914. holy God

  915. who graciously

  916. comes down

  917. to the rescue

  918. then whatever

  919. we have to say

  920. about the moral

  921. law of God,

  922. whatever we have

  923. to say about

  924. the ten commandments

  925. of God,

  926. it's not going

  927. to help you

  928. at all.

  929. Because it's

  930. no use knowing

  931. how this God

  932. wants you to

  933. live unless

  934. you actually

  935. know him.

  936. Unless you

  937. actually have

  938. a relationship

  939. with him.

  940. Unless you've

  941. actually experienced

  942. the rescuing

  943. grace and the

  944. saving power

  945. that he has

  946. to offer you.

  947. That's where

  948. you have to

  949. start.

  950. The God

  951. who comes

  952. down.

  953. But we also

  954. want to talk

  955. not just about

  956. this God

  957. who comes

  958. down,

  959. we want to

  960. talk about

  961. this God

  962. who passes

  963. over.

  964. And this

  965. is turning

  966. to Exodus

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  967. chapter 12,

  968. the God

  969. who passes

  970. over.

  971. And remember

  972. we're starting

  973. this sermon

  974. series on

  975. the ten

  976. commandments

  977. that we find

  978. in Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  979. chapter 20.

  980. And so

  981. we're asking

  982. ourselves the

  983. question,

  984. who is giving

  985. those commands?

  986. What is his

  987. name?

  988. What is he

  989. like?

  990. What are his

  991. attributes?

  992. What's his

  993. character?

  994. How does he

  995. relate to us?

  996. What's his

  997. history?

  998. What's his

  999. track record?

  1000. What does he

  1001. do?

  1002. Is he good?

  1003. Is he

  1004. trustworthy?

  1005. And I hope

  1006. that you'll be

  1007. convinced that

  1008. this is a God

  1009. that you can

  1010. trust.

  1011. If this

  1012. creator God

  1013. designed you

  1014. then surely

  1015. he knows best

  1016. how to help

  1017. you live the

  1018. life that he

  1019. designed.

  1020. If this

  1021. God has

  1022. redeemed you

  1023. if he's

  1024. come down

  1025. to rescue

  1026. you then

  1027. surely he

  1028. has a

  1029. purpose and

  1030. a plan not

  1031. to harm

  1032. you or not

  1033. to repress

  1034. you but to

  1035. liberate you

  1036. and to bless

  1037. you.

  1038. Can I

  1039. trust this

  1040. God enough

  1041. to obey

  1042. him?

  1043. That's the

  1044. question.

  1045. And it's

  1046. sort of like

  1047. the question

  1048. that Pharaoh

  1049. king of

  1050. Egypt asked

  1051. Moses.

  1052. In Exodus

    Exodus 5 chapter mention

  1053. chapter 5 he

  1054. says to

  1055. Moses he

  1056. says who

  1057. is the

  1058. Lord that

  1059. I should

  1060. obey him?

  1061. That is

  1062. like the

  1063. question.

  1064. Who is

  1065. the Lord

  1066. that I

  1067. should

  1068. obey him?

  1069. He's

  1070. saying Moses

  1071. what is so

  1072. unique about

  1073. your God

  1074. and your

  1075. faith that

  1076. I should

  1077. trust him

  1078. that I

  1079. should embrace

  1080. him that I

  1081. should follow

  1082. him?

  1083. And there's

  1084. probably no

  1085. better answer

  1086. to that

  1087. question of

  1088. what is so

  1089. unique about

  1090. God than

  1091. Exodus

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  1092. chapter 12

  1093. this famous

  1094. passage of

  1095. the Passover

  1096. Passover and

  1097. you know

  1098. what is so

  1099. unique about

  1100. God?

  1101. What is so

  1102. unique about

  1103. faith in

  1104. this God?

  1105. The biblical

  1106. vision of

  1107. ultimate

  1108. spiritual reality

  1109. is right here.

  1110. Right?

  1111. For Jews the

  1112. Passover meal

  1113. is the central

  1114. thing that makes

  1115. them who they

  1116. are.

  1117. And for

  1118. Christians a

  1119. revised

  1120. Passover a

  1121. reinterpreted

  1122. Passover meal

  1123. called the

  1124. Lord's Supper

  1125. it's the central

  1126. act of worship.

  1127. We're going to

  1128. do it here in

  1129. just a moment.

  1130. What makes

  1131. this God so

  1132. unique that I

  1133. should obey

  1134. him?

  1135. And the

  1136. answer to the

  1137. question is

  1138. this.

  1139. The bloody

  1140. death of a

  1141. helpless

  1142. victim.

  1143. It's at the

  1144. very heart of

  1145. the Bible.

  1146. The bloody

  1147. death of a

  1148. helpless

  1149. victim.

  1150. At the

  1151. very center

  1152. of biblical

  1153. faith the

  1154. vision of

  1155. ultimate

  1156. spiritual reality

  1157. is the

  1158. bloody death

  1159. of a

  1160. helpless

  1161. victim.

  1162. Why?

  1163. What do we

  1164. mean by that?

  1165. Well God

  1166. called Pharaoh

  1167. king of

  1168. Egypt over

  1169. and over

  1170. again to

  1171. release the

  1172. Hebrews from

  1173. their grinding

  1174. poverty and

  1175. slavery.

  1176. And of course

  1177. he refused over

  1178. and over.

  1179. And so God

  1180. releases these

  1181. ten plagues

  1182. of justice.

  1183. It's God's

  1184. cosmic justice

  1185. to dismantle

  1186. this dehumanizing

  1187. empire.

  1188. And he gets

  1189. through these

  1190. plagues and now

  1191. we get to the

  1192. tenth and the

  1193. final plague.

  1194. And it says in

  1195. verse 12 on

  1196. that same night

  1197. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 12:12

  1198. 12 verse 12

  1199. on that same

  1200. night I

  1201. will pass

  1202. through Egypt

  1203. and strike

  1204. down every

  1205. firstborn both

  1206. people and

  1207. animals and I

  1208. will bring

  1209. judgment on all

  1210. the gods of

  1211. Egypt.

  1212. I am the

  1213. Lord.

  1214. I am.

  1215. I am.

  1216. God's just

  1217. judgment is

  1218. coming down

  1219. on this empire

  1220. that's been

  1221. resisting God

  1222. and abusing

  1223. his people.

  1224. people and

  1225. it's as if

  1226. God is

  1227. bringing that

  1228. great future

  1229. day of divine

  1230. judgment forward

  1231. into the present

  1232. so that on this

  1233. one night and

  1234. in this one

  1235. place there will

  1236. be a temporary

  1237. and preliminary

  1238. day of

  1239. devastating

  1240. judgment.

  1241. And God

  1242. says I'm

  1243. going to allow

  1244. all the things

  1245. that I'm

  1246. typically holding

  1247. back to flood

  1248. in.

  1249. I'm going to

  1250. allow this

  1251. destructive chaos

  1252. to go through

  1253. the greatest

  1254. military and

  1255. economic power

  1256. the world has

  1257. ever seen.

  1258. And he says

  1259. there's only

  1260. one thing

  1261. that can

  1262. protect you.

  1263. And what is

  1264. that one thing

  1265. that can protect

  1266. you from the

  1267. ultimate power

  1268. in the universe?

  1269. It's the most

  1270. unlikely thing.

  1271. It's the most

  1272. bizarre and crazy

  1273. thing.

  1274. It's a lamb.

  1275. It's a woolly

  1276. quadruped.

  1277. It's the weakest

  1278. possible creature

  1279. you could imagine.

  1280. God says the

  1281. only way you can

  1282. face the ultimate

  1283. power in the

  1284. universe is a

  1285. lamb.

  1286. Look at chapter

  1287. 12 verse 3.

  1288. He says tell the

  1289. whole community of

  1290. Israel that on

  1291. the tenth day of

  1292. this month each

1293. man is to take a

  1294. lamb for his

  1295. family one for

  1296. each household.

  1297. And then he

  1298. says in verse 7

  1299. then they are to

  1300. take some of the

  1301. blood and put it

  1302. on the sides and

  1303. tops of the door

  1304. frames of the

  1305. houses where they

  1306. eat the lambs.

  1307. What he's calling

  1308. them to is a

  1309. public act of

  1310. faith.

  1311. He's telling

  1312. them today in the

  1313. next few hours you

  1314. have to take a

  1315. stand.

  1316. You've got to

  1317. declare yourself to

1318. be a person and to

  1319. be a people that

  1320. are under the blood

  1321. of the Passover

  1322. lamb.

  1323. And if you read

  1324. the whole of

  1325. Exodus 12 one of

  1326. the first things that

  1327. jumps out is this

  1328. principle of

  1329. spiritual

  1330. egalitarianism.

1331. And what I mean by

1332. that is if you look

  1333. at Exodus 12 verse

    Exodus 12:22

  1334. 22 which we didn't

  1335. print for you.

  1336. Moses goes and he

  1337. talks to the elders

  1338. of Israel and he

  1339. says okay you've got

  1340. to put this blood

1341. on the top and the

  1342. door frames of your

  1343. house and then he

  1344. says this he says

1345. none of you shall go

1346. out of the door of

  1347. your house until

  1348. morning.

  1349. And when the Lord

  1350. comes through the land

  1351. to strike down the

  1352. Egyptians he will see

1353. the blood on the top

  1354. and sides of the

1355. door frame and he will

  1356. pass over that

  1357. doorway and he will

  1358. not permit the

  1359. destroyer to enter

  1360. your houses and

  1361. strike you down.

  1362. And you know what

  1363. that means when God

1364. says none of you are

1365. to go outside of your

  1366. door or your house

  1367. until the morning.

  1368. You know what that

  1369. means?

  1370. That means that

  1371. God's justice is not

  1372. just for the Egyptians

  1373. but that if an

  1374. Israelite does not

1375. have the blood of the

  1376. lamb over their

  1377. lives they're going to

  1378. get God's justice

  1379. too.

  1380. And you say well

  1381. wait a minute.

  1382. I thought the

  1383. Israelites were the

  1384. oppressed victims and

  1385. Egypt and the

  1386. Egyptians were the

  1387. oppressing victimizers.

  1388. I thought Israel was

  1389. worshipping the true

  1390. God and I thought

  1391. Egypt was worshipping

  1392. false idols.

  1393. How can this be?

1394. Yet it says that if

  1395. any of God's people

  1396. were to meet God's

  1397. judgment without the

  1398. blood of the lamb

1399. they too are going to

  1400. be lost.

  1401. They're going to be

  1402. destroyed.

  1403. They're going to be

  1404. struck down.

  1405. And why is that?

  1406. Well what sinful

  1407. human being can stand

  1408. unsheltered,

  1409. unprotected in the

  1410. presence of this holy

1411. God who says I am who

  1412. I am.

  1413. Who can stand without

  1414. some sort of protection?

  1415. Spiritually speaking the

  1416. most doctrinally

  1417. orthodox, the most

  1418. spiritually engaged,

  1419. the most biblically

  1420. righteous, the most

  1421. morally pure Israelite on

1422. that night was no better

  1423. than any Egyptian.

  1424. Christian.

1425. And God says if you go

1426. out and you try to meet

  1427. God's judgment on your

1428. own and you do not

  1429. place yourself by faith

1430. under this blood of the

  1431. Passover lamb that I

  1432. provided then your SAT

  1433. scores and your

  1434. athletic trophies and

  1435. your fancy degrees and

1436. your resume and all of

  1437. your achievements, your

  1438. racial identity, your

  1439. ethnic heritage, your

  1440. doctrinal beliefs, your

  1441. ethical behavior, none of

1442. that is going to do you

  1443. any good.

1444. None of that's going to

1445. help you and protect you

  1446. at all.

  1447. You Israelites, you're

1448. going to be just as lost

  1449. to the people you

  1450. despise, the Egyptians.

  1451. But here's another thing

1452. that jumps out in this

  1453. passage that not only

  1454. this principle of

  1455. spiritual egalitarianism

  1456. but also this principle

  1457. of spiritual

  1458. substitutionism.

1459. And what do I mean by

  1460. that?

  1461. Well, in every single

  1462. house that night there

  1463. was either a dead

  1464. firstborn or a dead

  1465. lamb.

  1466. Either the people

  1467. deserving God's just

  1468. judgment died or the

  1469. lamb got what they

  1470. deserved.

1471. The lamb, you see, is

  1472. the substitute, the

1473. blood of the lamb, the

1474. life of the lamb took

  1475. your place.

  1476. That every Israelite

1477. looked at the lamb on

  1478. their table and they

  1479. said the sole reason

1480. that I'm not dead is

  1481. because that lamb is.

  1482. peace.

  1483. And every Israelite

  1484. realized that night

  1485. that God mysteriously

  1486. caused his judgment

  1487. not to pass through

1488. them but to pass over

  1489. them.

1490. That God did not strike

  1491. them with his justice.

1492. God sheltered them in his

  1493. mercy.

1494. The blood of the lamb

  1495. somehow satisfied God's

  1496. judgment and gave them

  1497. peace.

  1498. And here's the thing.

  1499. Here's the thing.

  1500. Even though God

  1501. delivered them that

  1502. night, they had to

  1503. keep sacrificing

  1504. lambs.

1505. If you read the Old

  1506. Testament for five

  1507. minutes, you know

  1508. that this is something

  1509. they're doing every day

  1510. and every year because

  1511. God showed them that's

1512. what they needed to do

  1513. because they needed to

1514. realize that they had a

  1515. deeper and a bigger

  1516. problem that required a

  1517. deeper and a bigger

  1518. deliverance and salvation.

1519. And that's why when you

  1520. finally read through the

  1521. Old Testament and you

1522. get to the pages of the

  1523. New Testament, you find

  1524. John the Baptist there

  1525. saying about Jesus Christ,

  1526. what does he say?

  1527. He says, behold the

1528. Lamb of God who takes

1529. away the sin of the world.

1530. And that's why when you

1531. fast forward to the end

1532. of the Gospels, you see

1533. Jesus on the night before

  1534. his cross.

  1535. What does he do?

  1536. He gets his disciples

  1537. together and they

  1538. celebrate what?

  1539. They celebrate the

  1540. Passover.

1541. And Jesus gets up as the

1542. presider of that meal and

1543. instead of saying, this is

1544. the bread of our affliction,

  1545. what does he say?

1546. He says, this bread is my

  1547. body.

1548. Instead of saying, this cup

1549. is a reminder of the

  1550. promises of God's freedom

  1551. and God's redemption, what

  1552. does Jesus say?

1553. He says, this cup is the

1554. new covenant in my blood for

  1555. the forgiveness of your

  1556. sins.

  1557. What he's saying, he's

  1558. saying, I'm the Lamb.

1559. And my death on the cross is

1560. going to bring about a

  1561. Passover, not from physical

  1562. or economic or political

  1563. bondage.

1564. It's going to bring you

  1565. freedom from that deeper

  1566. spiritual bondage that you're

1567. in to sin and death.

1568. And if my blood is covering

  1569. you, good news, God's

1570. judgment is going to pass

1571. through me so that it can

  1572. pass over you.

1573. God's justice is going to

1574. strike me so that it can

  1575. shelter you.

1576. Jesus says, I've come to get

1577. God's justice so that you

1578. could get God's mercy and you

1579. can live in God's peace.

1580. God's justice is going to

1581. And so the question for us is,

1582. what do you think is going to

  1583. protect you ultimately?

1584. Do you believe that the only

1585. thing that will save you is the

  1586. blood of the Lamb?

1587. And are you putting your faith and

1588. your trust in the power of that

  1589. blood in your place?

1590. Have you, so to speak, gone out

1591. and put it on the top in the

1592. door frames of your house and

  1593. over your life?

1594. Have you gone and sought shelter

1595. there and said, this is the only

1596. place where I can really find

  1597. safety and salvation?

1598. Are you making that public?

1599. Everybody could see whether or not

1600. you put that blood over your

  1601. house.

1602. Have you made it public?

1603. Are you giving testimony to the

1604. fact that this is actually my

1605. only hope and my only peace?

1606. This is my only righteousness.

1607. This is the only hope of the

1608. whole world is the blood of this

  1609. Lamb.

1610. Before we get to this God who

1611. gives ten commandments in Exodus

1612. 20, we got to know the God who

1613. comes down in Exodus 3 and the God

1614. who passes over in Exodus 12.

1615. And I just want us to think for a

1616. minute of finally what we're

1617. talking about this God who gives

  1618. freedom.

1619. The ten commandments in Exodus 20

  1620. begin on this foundation.

1621. I am the Lord your God.

1622. I am the Lord and I'm your God.

1623. And I brought you out of Egypt, out

1624. of the land of slavery.

1625. Everything depends upon and flows

  1626. from this starting point.

1627. The logic is this, that because I am

1628. the Lord your God who brought you

1629. out of slavery, therefore you should

1630. have no other gods before me, etc.

1631. The prophet Hosea puts it this way,

1632. I have been the Lord your God ever

1633. since you came out of Egypt.

1634. You shall acknowledge no God but me,

  1635. no savior except me.

1636. Do you see God's logic?

1637. Do you see the logic of the gospel

1638. that exclusive love for and devotion

1639. to the Lord begins with this reality

1640. and this experience of deliverance

  1641. from bondage.

1642. And to be set free in Exodus 12

1643. is to go on this journey to Mount

1644. Sinai in Exodus chapter 20 where the

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

1645. full implications of your salvation are

1646. revealed in those ten commandments.

  1647. And they're joyfully accepted

1648. because you say, well this is the way

1649. to live a free and abundant life.

1650. You see the Christian journey is a journey

1651. from the slavery of sin to salvation

  1652. to service.

1653. It's a journey from guilt to grace

  1654. to gratitude.

1655. And when you experience the reality of this

1656. God who comes down to the rescue

1657. in the flesh and in the person of Jesus Christ,

1658. when you experience this God

1659. who passes through Jesus in justice,

1660. in order to pass over you in mercy,

1661. you begin to fall in love with this God.

1662. You realize, oh my goodness,

  1663. this God loves me.

  1664. He loves me.

  1665. And I think I love him.

1666. See, a Christian is somebody

1667. who's melted by the love of God.

1668. When you fall in love with a person,

  1669. guys, listen,

1670. when you fall in love with a girl,

1671. what do you want to do?

  1672. Write this down.

1673. You want to figure out what pleases her.

1674. And this is also very important.

1675. You want to figure out what displeases her.

  1676. Okay?

  1677. Girls,

1678. what do you do when you fall in love with that guy?

1679. You want to figure out

1680. what causes him to feel loved,

1681. what causes him to feel respected,

1682. what causes him to feel honored.

1683. And you write that down.

1684. And you go and do that.

  1685. I don't know,

1686. did any of you grow up on the Princess Bride?

1687. That was like the Rosetta Stone

  1688. of my entire childhood.

  1689. And it, you know,

1690. if you haven't seen this,

  1691. repent.

  1692. Go see it today.

  1693. Princess Buttercup.

  1694. She says,

  1695. Wesley, you know,

  1696. fetch me the pitcher.

1697. Wesley, draw me some water.

  1698. Whatever she needs,

  1699. whatever she wants.

1700. And how does Wesley respond?

  1701. Thank you.

  1702. I love this church.

  1703. As you wish.

  1704. That's what you say

1705. when you fall in love with someone.

1706. When you realize how much they love you,

  1707. you say,

  1708. as you wish.

1709. You delight to respond to that love

  1710. with your own love,

  1711. just as you wish.

1712. And when you look at this God

  1713. in Exodus 3 and Exodus 12,

1714. and you see what he's like,

1715. and you see how he thinks

  1716. about his beloved people,

1717. when you see the lengths

1718. to which he will go

  1719. to deliver them

1720. and to set them free,

  1721. the only proper response

1722. to this love is what?

  1723. As you wish.

  1724. It's the only way

  1725. to express our gratitude

1726. for what he's done for us.

1727. And my hope is that

  1728. as we go through

  1729. this sermon series,

  1730. we will eventually come

  1731. to say the words

  1732. that the psalmist says.

  1733. When the psalmist,

  1734. in Psalm 119,

  1735. he says,

1736. Oh, how I love your law.

1737. And that's just another way

  1738. of saying,

1739. Oh, how I love you.

1740. And because I love you,

  1741. I love your law,

1742. and I want to meditate on it

  1743. all day long.

  1744. Why?

  1745. Because it's the path

  1746. to freedom.

  1747. It's the path

  1748. to abundant life.

  1749. Amen?

1750. In the name of the Father,

  1751. Son, and Holy Spirit.

  1752. Amen.

  1753. Amen.

  1754. Amen.

  1755. Amen.

  1756. Amen.

  1757. Amen.
