  5. A reading from the book of Exodus, chapter 14, starting from verse 1 all the way to verse 31.

    Exodus 14 chapter mention

  6. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  7. Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi-Hahiroth between Migdal and the sea.

  8. They are to encamp by the sea directly opposite Baal-Ziphon.

  9. Pharaoh will think the Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion hemmed in by the desert.

  10. And I will harden Pharaoh's heart and he will pursue them.

  11. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army.

  12. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.

  13. So the Israelites did this.

  14. When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled,

  15. Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said,

  16. What have we done?

  17. We've let the Israelites go and have lost their services.

  18. So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him.

  19. He took 600 of the best chariots along with all the other chariots of Egypt.

  20. With officers over all of them.

  21. The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

  22. So that he pursued the Israelites who were marching out boldly.

  23. The Egyptians, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, horsemen and troops,

  24. pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi-Hahiroth opposite Baal-Ziphon.

  25. As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up.

  26. And there were the Egyptians marching after them.

  27. They said to Moses,

  28. Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?

  29. What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

  30. Didn't we say to you in Egypt, leave us alone?

  31. Let us serve the Egyptians.

  32. It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert.

  33. Moses answered the people,

  34. Do not be afraid.

  35. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.

  36. The Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.

  37. The Lord will fight for you.

  38. You need only to be still.

  39. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  40. Why are you crying out to me?

  41. Tell the Israelites to move on.

  42. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water

  43. so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.

  44. I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them.

  45. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army through his chariots and his horsemen.

  46. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.

  47. Then the angel of God who had been traveling in front of Israel's army withdrew and went behind them.

  48. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them,

  49. coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel.

  50. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side,

  51. so neither went near the other all night long.

  52. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea.

  53. And all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.

  54. The waters were divided,

  55. and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,

  56. with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

  57. The Egyptians pursued them,

  58. and all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea.

  59. During the last watch of the night,

  60. the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army

  61. and threw it into confusion.

  62. He jammed the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving.

  63. And the Egyptians said,

  64. Let's get away from the Israelites.

  65. The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.

  66. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  67. Stretch out your hand over the sea,

  68. so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.

  69. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,

  70. and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.

  71. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it,

  72. and the Lord swept them into the sea.

  73. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen.

  74. The entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea,

  75. not one of them survived.

  76. But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,

  77. with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

  78. That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians,

  79. and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.

  80. And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians,

  81. the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him and in Moses, His servant.

  82. The grass withers and the flowers fall,

  83. but the word of our God stands forever.

  84. Amen.

  85. You can take your seats.

  86. Let's pray.

  87. Lord, we thank you that your hand is mightier than any Pharaoh's hand.

  88. And we pray that having witnessed this,

  89. in you showing up in history time and time again to redeem your people,

  90. that you would give us that fear of the Lord,

  91. give us that faith in who you are and what you're capable of.

  92. God, show us your greatness, we pray,

  93. in the preaching of your word.

  94. In Jesus' name.

  95. Amen.

  96. Amen.

  97. All right.

  98. So, if I could give myself a grade on parenting this past week,

  99. at best, I'd give myself a C-.

  100. All right.

  101. C-.

  102. It was a rough week.

  103. Every morning, a battle.

  104. Every morning, a rush.

  105. Hurry filled our home.

  106. Come on.

  107. Let's go.

  108. What are you doing?

  109. Get moving.

  110. Hurry up.

  111. Obey.

  112. Or else.

  113. Right.

  114. I was loud.

  115. I was mean.

  116. I was forceful.

  117. I was domineering.

  118. This week, I cracked the whip.

  119. Like, more than I can ever recall.

  120. At best, C-.

  121. Parenting.

  122. Now, what in the world does this have to do with Moses

  123. and the crossing of the Red Sea?

  124. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this week,

  125. in the Ong household, I was Pharaoh.

  126. I was Pharaoh.

  127. Or at least, I caught myself living out the same imagination

  128. that animated Pharaoh and his empire.

  129. An imagination dominated by fear and insecurity.

  130. And the sense that, man, if things don't go according to my agenda,

  131. if I start losing the order and the security,

  132. even just in my own household,

  133. everything could just fall apart.

  134. So I better control everyone and everything around me,

  135. no matter the cost.

  136. And if ever my control seems to be slipping out of my fingers,

  137. more pressure, more force,

  138. whatever it takes to get everyone, everything back in line.

  139. That was Pharaoh's way in Egypt.

  140. That was my way in our home this past week.

  141. You know, I think that for a lot of us,

  142. when we approach the scriptures,

  143. we often only ever identify, though,

  144. with the victims and the underdogs,

  145. or maybe the heroes that we're trying to emulate and celebrate.

  146. Like, we can open this book of Exodus,

  147. and we think to ourselves,

  148. okay, we need to have faith like Moses,

  149. like the Israelites,

  150. because look, God delivered the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt.

  151. He defeated their oppressors,

  152. and the power of God's mighty hand went on full display

  153. when the people cried out to him in faith.

  154. So praise God,

  155. trust him in tough times,

  156. and walk by faith,

  157. because even when there seems no way,

  158. God can make a way.

  159. Sermon's over, right?

  160. But what if there's something else going on in this story

  161. that's just as important,

  162. but way easier to miss?

  163. What if this story invites us

  164. not merely to identify with the Hebrew slaves

  165. and with Moses,

  166. but to recognize something of Pharaoh

  167. and his ways in ourselves?

  168. What if Exodus 14 is not just about

  169. how God gets his people out of Egypt,

  170. but also about how God gets Egypt out of his people?

  171. Now, in case you're new,

  172. last week, our lead pastor, Jonathan,

  173. he opened up our series in the book of Exodus,

  174. where we're gonna be giving special attention

  175. to the Ten Commandments,

  176. but before we get there,

  177. we're spending a few weeks

  178. on what happened before the giving of the law.

  179. Because see, the Ten Commandments,

  180. they don't start right there

  181. on page one of the book of Exodus.

  182. No, before God ever tells his people how to live,

  183. and this is so key to understanding the Ten Commandments,

  184. before God ever tells his people how to live,

  185. he delivers them from slavery.

  186. His main intention is not to restrict,

  187. but to liberate and empower,

  188. and that's what we saw last week

  189. in the burning bush,

  190. in the Passover story.

  191. So coming into Exodus chapter 14 today,

    Exodus 14 chapter mention

  192. the Hebrews, they're free now,

  193. no longer slaves.

  194. The incredible, the impossible,

  195. has happened after 430 pilgrim years in Egypt,

  196. and generations of slavery,

  197. the journey out of Egypt has begun.

  198. And they're being led by God himself

  199. in a pillar of cloud by day

  200. and fire by night.

  201. And they're finally on their way.

  202. But then here, in chapter 14,

  203. in verse 2,

  204. God directs them to do something quite strange.

  205. Verse 2 says,

  206. tell the Israelites to turn back

  207. and encamp by the sea.

  208. For some reason,

  209. after leading them in one direction,

  210. God's now telling them to turn around

  211. and backtrack.

  212. Far from the most efficient route

  213. out of Egypt,

  214. God directed them to take a route

  215. that actually made them look silly

  216. and foolish and vulnerable and confused.

  217. And yet this is exactly his intention.

  218. God says in verses 3 and 4,

  219. I want you to look like you're wandering

  220. and confused and trapped.

  221. In fact, I'm planning for Pharaoh

  222. to pursue you with everything he's got,

  223. all his army, his horses, his chariots,

  224. all the things that made him

  225. a great and successful king over Egypt.

  226. And it is precisely when Pharaoh comes at you

  227. with the fullness of his power and his glory

  228. that I will show the world

  229. who all the power and all the glory

  230. actually belong to.

  231. See, the Exodus story isn't primarily

  232. about Moses or the Israelites

  233. and the miraculous things that happened to them.

  234. No, it's a story about the glory of God

  235. over all other powers.

  236. He's in complete control of the story

  237. and everything always plays out

  238. exactly as he has intended.

  239. So, just as God predicted,

  240. in verse 5, Pharaoh is filled with regret.

  241. Egypt's whole economic advantage,

  242. their whole low-cost labor force,

  243. the unjust engine of Pharaoh's empire,

  244. the Hebrews were no longer their slaves.

  245. And especially after 10 severe plagues

  246. that Egypt just suffered,

  247. Pharaoh's entire world is crumbling.

  248. His agenda, his security, his empire,

  249. his status, his legacy,

  250. it's all at risk.

  251. The control that the pharaohs of Egypt

  252. had enjoyed for generations

  253. was now slipping through his fingers.

  254. So, his back's against the wall

  255. and now what does he do?

  256. Well, the only thing he knows to do, right?

  257. The only thing he could ever imagine

  258. or believe that would work,

  259. he reaches for more power,

  260. more force, more pressure.

  261. The whole of his army, every horse,

  262. all the chariots of Egypt, it says.

  263. Because this is how you get control back.

  264. This is how you secure

  265. your own desired outcomes.

  266. You crack the whip as hard as you need to

  267. until everyone and everything

  268. bends the knee to you.

  269. So, even after, again,

  270. suffering 10 terrible plagues

  271. and being on the losing side

  272. of this battle between

  273. the God of the Hebrews

  274. and all the Egyptians'

  275. most powerful gods,

  276. in Pharaoh's mind,

  277. because of the success that he's seen,

  278. the success that he's seen

  279. in his chariots and his horsemen

  280. and his army,

  281. time and time again,

  282. he believes that he still has a chance.

  283. And because he's never known

  284. a God like Yahweh,

  285. he's never known a God

  286. who is completely all-powerful,

  287. he's never known a God

  288. who is incapable of losing,

  289. in Pharaoh's imagination,

  290. he's still got a fighting chance

  291. to regain control by force.

  292. So, just as God designed,

  293. Pharaoh gears up.

  294. And with every military,

  295. every technological advantage

  296. at his disposal,

  297. he goes to reacquire

  298. his escaped assets,

  299. the Hebrews.

  300. And in no time,

  301. the Egyptians are

  302. on the Hebrews' heels.

  303. And as they approach,

  304. verse 10 says,

  305. the Israelites looked up.

  306. And they were terrified,

  307. and they cried out to the Lord,

  308. verse 11,

  309. was it because there were

  310. no graves in Egypt

  311. that you brought us

  312. to the desert to die?

  313. What have you done to us

  314. by bringing us out of Egypt?

  315. Didn't we say to you in Egypt,

  316. leave us alone?

  317. Let us serve the Egyptians.

  318. It would have been better

  319. for us to serve the Egyptians

  320. than to die in the desert.

  321. Did you hear that?

  322. They are literally standing free

  323. outside of Egypt.

  324. And yet Egypt

  325. is not yet outside of them.

  326. It would have been better,

  327. they said.

  328. It would have been better

  329. to live as slaves

  330. of Pharaoh in Egypt

  331. than to die as sons

  332. of Yahweh in the desert.

  333. Though no longer slaves

  334. to Egypt,

  335. they still were slaves

  336. to the fear

  337. and to the threat

  338. of Egypt.

  339. And although Pharaoh

  340. no longer controlled

  341. Hebrew bodies,

  342. he still had a hold

  343. on Hebrew hearts,

  344. Hebrew minds,

  345. Hebrew imaginations,

  346. looking up at Pharaoh's army

  347. in full force,

  348. watching those unstoppable

  349. chariots inch closer

  350. and closer and closer,

  351. hearing the crash

  352. of the roaring waves

  353. behind them,

  354. feeling the mist

  355. of the Red Sea

  356. on their backs,

  357. Israel could only conceive

  358. of two possible outcomes.

  359. They could only imagine

  360. two possible futures

  361. for themselves.

  362. In this moment

  363. where they were trapped

  364. between their former enslavers

  365. and the raging sea

  366. behind them,

  367. as far as they could see,

  368. as far as Pharaoh could see,

  369. as far as anyone could see,

  370. either go back

  371. and live as slaves

  372. or go forward and die.

  373. Slavery or the sea.

  374. And what's so striking

  375. is that Pharaoh and Israel,

  376. you know,

  377. they basically agree here

  378. on all the possible options.

  379. Pharaoh thinks,

  380. I've got them.

  381. They're trapped.

  382. There's nowhere to escape.

  383. And the Hebrews also think,

  384. he's got us.

  385. We're trapped.

  386. And there's nowhere to escape.

  387. The dominance,

  388. even the apparent omnipotence

  389. of Egypt continues to shape

  390. their imaginations,

  391. their sense of what is possible.

  392. Even after witnessing

  393. the ten plagues that God used

  394. to free them from Egypt,

  395. their fears and complaints,

  396. their imaginations reveal

  397. who they really think

  398. is the most powerful one

  399. in control of this moment.

  400. Effectively,

  401. Israel believes the same thing

  402. about power

  403. that Pharaoh does.

  404. They're just on

  405. the other end of it.

  406. And therefore,

  407. they believe they're doomed.

  408. They're hopeless.

  409. They're trapped

  410. with no way out.

  411. Riding his chariot,

  412. Pharaoh says,

  413. I have the power,

  414. therefore I determine

  415. the future.

  416. And facing the chariots,

  417. the Israelites agree.

  418. Pharaoh has the power

  419. and therefore,

  420. he determines our future.

  421. They'd gotten out of Egypt,

  422. but Egypt hadn't gotten

  423. out of them.

  424. Both Pharaoh and Israel,

  425. they were both living

  426. out of the same understanding,

  427. both ruled

  428. by the same imagination.

  429. The same imagination

  430. that ruled me this week.

  431. When I was screaming

  432. at my girls

  433. at the breakfast table,

  434. higher volume,

  435. more pressure,

  436. more threats.

  437. Why?

  438. Because that's how

  439. I implicitly believed

  440. the world to work.

  441. That's what I believed

  442. would secure

  443. my desired outcomes.

  444. Pressure,

  445. tyranny,

  446. aggression,

  447. the ultimate tools

  448. for getting what we want.

  449. In my imagination,

  450. there was no other way.

  451. This is the only way

  452. to get stuff done, right?

  453. And whether you're

  454. on Pharaoh's side of it

  455. or Israel's side of it,

  456. this imagination

  457. is just so prevalent

  458. and influential

  459. if you pay attention to it.

  460. Whether it's,

  461. I have to throw

  462. everything I've got

  463. at this thing

  464. to secure my future,

  465. to secure

  466. my academic outcomes,

  467. my relational outcomes,

  468. my financial,

  469. my career outcomes,

  470. my health outcomes,

  471. more effort,

  472. better technique,

  473. higher investment

  474. because if I don't

  475. concentrate everything

  476. I've got

  477. to make this happen,

  478. who will?

  479. Whether you come at it

  480. like Pharaoh

  481. or whether you come at it

  482. like Israel,

  483. like,

  484. I'm done for.

  485. I'm stuck.

  486. I'm trapped.

  487. And there's no possible

  488. happy ending

  489. because I have no power,

  490. no resources,

  491. no nothing,

  492. no hope for salvation,

  493. no hope for joy,

  494. no hope for my marriage,

  495. my children,

  496. my broken relationships,

  497. my health,

  498. everything's already

  499. been decided for my life

  500. and every possible scenario

  501. stinks.

  502. See,

  503. whether we're desperately

  504. trying to control

  505. our circumstances

  506. or terrified

  507. because of how little

  508. control we have

  509. before the powers that be,

  510. we're basically still living

  511. inside a Pharaoh's imagination

  512. under the shadow

  513. of his oppressive empire

  514. where the future belongs

  515. to whoever can crack

  516. the whip

  517. the hardest.

  518. But here in Exodus chapter 14,

    Exodus 14 chapter mention

  519. God invites his people

  520. to expand

  521. and to even re-imagine

  522. our imaginations,

  523. to inform our imaginations

  524. by the goodness

  525. and the glory

  526. and the infinite omnipotence

  527. of our holy God.

  528. Precisely,

  529. precisely when Pharaoh thinks

  530. that he's got them

  531. right where he wants them,

  532. and precisely when Israel thinks

  533. that Pharaoh's got them

  534. right where he wants them,

  535. trapped with no possible salvation,

  536. Moses,

  537. the prophetic mediator,

  538. the mouthpiece of God,

  539. he speaks to them.

  540. Three commands

  541. and one big truth.

  542. Verse 13,

  543. first command,

  544. fear not,

  545. do not be afraid.

  546. Second command,

  547. stand firm,

  548. or better yet,

  549. stand still.

  550. you could translate this.

  551. And third command,

  552. see.

  553. Behold,

  554. feast your eyes

  555. upon the deliverance

  556. the Lord will bring you

  557. today.

  558. The Egyptians you see today,

  559. you will never see again.

  560. And then this is probably

  561. my favorite part of the whole passage

  562. in verse 14.

  563. One big truth

  564. and one requirement.

  565. The Lord

  566. will fight

  567. for you.

  568. You need only

  569. to be still.

  570. The battle belongs

  571. to the Lord,

  572. he's saying.

  573. You cannot fight

  574. your way free.

  575. You cannot swim

  576. your way free.

  577. You cannot deliver

  578. your own deliverance.

  579. You must

  580. allow Yahweh

  581. to do that for you.

  582. You cannot do

  583. what only Yahweh can do.

  584. You need not fight

  585. or win your own battles.

  586. You need only

  587. be still

  588. and know

  589. that God

  590. is God.

  591. So,

  592. God invites his people

  593. to go from

  594. bewildered

  595. by the hand of Pharaoh

  596. to beholding

  597. the mighty hand

  598. and outstretched arm

  599. of God.

  600. When in verse 10

  601. it says the Israelites

  602. looked up,

  603. saw the Egyptians

  604. and were terrified,

  605. now here in verse 13

  606. their Lord invites them

  607. to look again

  608. but now higher

  609. toward him.

  610. To see reality

  611. for what it really is

  612. at every point

  613. held and guided

  614. by the mighty hand

  615. of Yahweh.

  616. He wants to fix their eyes

  617. on a power

  618. and on possibilities

  619. far beyond those

  620. of Pharaoh's imagination.

  621. Because,

  622. as he said in verse 4,

  623. he says it again

  624. in verses 17 and 18,

  625. he's on a mission

  626. to manifest his glory,

  627. to make himself known

  628. to Israel,

  629. to the great

  630. and mighty empire

  631. of Egypt

  632. and really to all

  633. the watching world

  634. here between

  635. the Egyptians

  636. and the Red Sea

  637. where the salvation

  638. of his people

  639. seems like an absolute

  640. impossibility.

  641. Yahweh makes himself

  642. known as the God

  643. who creates possibilities

  644. that neither Pharaoh

  645. nor Israel

  646. nor anyone else

  647. could have imagined.

  648. And how?

  649. By making a way

  650. where there was no way,

  651. dry ground

  652. through the middle

  653. of the sea.

  654. It's incredible,

  655. this crossing

  656. of the Red Sea.

  657. Now, if you are

  658. a modern Western

  659. scientific person,

  660. that should sound

  661. pretty amazing to you,

  662. right?

  663. That just,

  664. that doesn't happen,

  665. right?

  666. And as a side note,

  667. if you're here

  668. and you struggle

  669. with Christianity

  670. because of stories

  671. like this,

  672. we're super glad

  673. you're here.

  674. We'd love to speak

  675. to you about your

  676. obstacles and objections

  677. but what we also

  678. want to communicate

  679. to you is,

  680. hey,

  681. at the heart

  682. of the Christian faith

  683. is a crucified Messiah

  684. who was raised

  685. on the third day.

  686. And Christians,

  687. you know,

  688. we aren't a gullible people

  689. but what I would say

  690. is we do have

  691. a very expansive,

  692. joyful,

  693. and hopeful imagination

  694. when it comes to

  695. what our God

  696. can and cannot do.

  697. And we'd love

  698. to invite you

  699. to try that on

  700. and to imagine

  701. and dream with us.

  702. But back to the story again,

  703. for modern scientific people

  704. like us,

  705. right?

  706. This Red Sea event,

  707. it should sound

  708. super amazing,

  709. supernatural,

  710. right?

  711. Unnatural.

  712. But man,

  713. if you were an Egyptian,

  714. if you were an Israelite,

  715. if you were someone

  716. steeped in the mythological culture

  717. of the ancient Near East,

  718. man,

  719. this wasn't just

  720. some unnatural,

  721. supernatural occurrence.

  722. This was so much

  723. more than that.

  724. I want you to notice

  725. what might seem like

  726. a minor detail

  727. in verses 2 and 9.

  728. Do you see where it indicates

  729. the location of this event?

  730. It says that they're

  731. camped out opposite

  732. of this place called

  733. Baal Zephon.

  734. If you know

  735. some of the other parts

  736. of your Bible,

  737. Baal was this God

  738. that many people

  739. in the region

  740. worshipped.

  741. That's because

  742. this was an area

  743. where the worship

  744. of Baal Zephon

  745. was very dominant.

  746. He was known

  747. as the storm God.

  748. Baal Zephon

  749. was associated

  750. with the storm God Baal

  751. known throughout

  752. the region

  753. for his hard-fought

  754. victory over Yam,

  755. which means the sea.

  756. Alright,

  757. so Baal Zephon,

  758. he's known as the storm God

  759. who's defeated

  760. the great power

  761. of the sea.

  762. And in fact,

  763. in the world of Exodus,

  764. across the ancient Near East,

  765. in the stories people

  766. told about their gods

  767. and the ordering

  768. of their universe,

  769. the sea

  770. was often seen

  771. as a threatening,

  772. ominous,

  773. chaotic power

  774. that the gods

  775. waged violent war against,

  776. triumphing only

  777. through fierce

  778. and dangerous struggle.

  779. And they had to fight

  780. in order

  781. to establish

  782. their supremacy

  783. and their kingship.

  784. So you think about

  785. the Babylonian myth

  786. of Marduk

  787. defeating Tiamat,

  788. right?

  789. Or here,

  790. Baal defeating

  791. Yam,

  792. the sea.

  793. But,

  794. in both these stories,

  795. these are battles

  796. where the gods

  797. have worthy opponents.

  798. They have rivals

  799. and so they need weapons.

  800. Baal has to have

  801. another god

  802. make special weapons

  803. so that he could defeat

  804. Yam,

  805. the sea.

  806. Marduk goes to war

  807. with a bow

  808. and arrow,

  809. with a club,

  810. a net,

  811. lightning,

  812. and wind.

  813. Because these gods

  814. are going up

  815. against powers

  816. that can actually

  817. threaten them.

  818. In the ancient

  819. Near Eastern imagination,

  820. the sea was a power

  821. that threatened

  822. both men

  823. and even their gods.

  824. And so,

  825. in these stories,

  826. there's always a struggle,

  827. there's always danger,

  828. there's always risk

  829. and uncertainty

  830. about who's gonna

  831. come out on top.

  832. But now let's come back

  833. to Exodus 14

  834. and watch Yahweh

  835. and the sea.

  836. Is there a battle here?

  837. Is there a struggle?

  838. Is there any uncertainty,

  839. peril,

  840. or risk?

  841. None.

  842. None,

  843. because the sea

  844. isn't another god

  845. vying for power

  846. against Yahweh.

  847. No,

  848. the sea is powerful.

  849. Yes,

  850. more powerful than Israel,

  851. more powerful than Pharaoh,

  852. more powerful than many

  853. of the ancient Near Eastern gods.

  854. But to Yahweh,

  855. the sea

  856. is his creation.

  857. And from the very beginning

  858. of the creation

  859. of the world,

  860. he looked out

  861. upon the ominous,

  862. threatening,

  863. chaotic,

  864. disorderly deep,

  865. and he simply spoke it

  866. into order.

  867. He spoke life

  868. into the world

  869. with the holy breath

  870. of his authoritative words.

  871. And he does so here again.

  872. Verse 21,

  873. Yahweh sends the wind,

  874. he sends his breath,

  875. and the sea moves,

  876. the waters divide,

  877. dry ground appears.

  878. And when he wants

  879. the waters back

  880. where they were,

  881. they go back.

  882. And he even uses

  883. his human servant mediator,

  884. Moses,

  885. to accomplish this.

  886. And Moses himself

  887. doesn't even struggle.

  888. So even as Yahweh

  889. fights for Israel,

  890. he is at the same time

  891. not fighting against

  892. the sea

  893. or any rival.

  894. The sea isn't his rival,

  895. it's his servant.

  896. And that is what Exodus

  897. wants us to see

  898. about Israel's God.

  899. Yahweh isn't just

  900. another ancient storm god

  901. who happens to be stronger

  902. than Baal

  903. and the gods of Egypt.

  904. He's not Marduk

  905. with a better arsenal

  906. of weapons.

  907. It's not like he's got

  908. better tech and gear

  909. than Pharaoh

  910. with his 600 best chariots.

  911. Yahweh is simply,

  912. he's not simply

  913. the strongest god

  914. in the same category

  915. as these other gods.

  916. No, he's in a category

  917. all of his own.

  918. Whereas Baal has to

  919. defeat the sea

  920. to establish his kingship,

  921. whereas Marduk

  922. has to conquer Tiamat

  923. to establish his supremacy,

  924. Yahweh commands the sea

  925. because he's already king.

  926. He doesn't become sovereign

  927. by winning this battle.

  928. The battle reveals

  929. that he's always been sovereign.

  930. Yahweh isn't merely

  931. showing Israel

  932. that he's a better warrior

  933. than Pharaoh.

  934. He's showing them

  935. that he,

  936. and he alone,

  937. is the creator.

  938. And when the creator

  939. is in the story,

  940. Pharaoh doesn't get

  941. to decide

  942. what is possible.

  943. The sea doesn't get

  944. to decide

  945. what is possible.

  946. Even the apparent limits

  947. of creation

  948. don't get to decide

  949. and give the final word

  950. because the creator

  951. can make a way

  952. where there is no way.

  953. When Pharaoh thought

  954. that the sea

  955. was his trap,

  956. Yahweh turned

  957. Pharaoh's trap

  958. into Israel's highway.

  959. This treacherous,

  960. threatening,

  961. unwieldy body of death,

  962. this raging sea,

  963. the thing everyone thought

  964. marked the end of the road

  965. for God's people,

  966. God made a way

  967. through it.

  968. A way to salvation

  969. through the waters,

  970. a way to bring glory

  971. to himself

  972. as the creator

  973. and savior God

  974. who he is.

  975. You know,

  976. another way you could

  977. tell the story

  978. of the exodus

  979. is as the story

  980. of the creator

  981. bringing about

  982. a new creation

  983. and particularly

  984. of subverting

  985. Pharaoh's

  986. anti-creation agenda,

  987. his anti-creation

  988. dominion.

  989. If you think about it,

  990. Pharaoh's really been

  991. an anti-creator

  992. figure from the beginning

  993. of the story in Exodus.

  994. If you look back

  995. in Exodus chapter 1

    Exodus 1:7

  996. verse 7,

  997. it says,

  998. the Israelites

  999. were exceedingly fruitful,

  1000. they multiplied greatly,

  1001. increased in numbers,

  1002. and became so numerous

  1003. that the land

  1004. was filled with them.

  1005. Does that language

  1006. sound familiar to you?

1007. Sounds like Genesis 1, right?

1008. The beginning of the Bible,

  1009. Genesis 1, 28,

  1010. God creates human beings,

  1011. he blesses them,

  1012. and he says,

  1013. be fruitful,

  1014. multiply,

  1015. and fill the earth.

  1016. And yet,

  1017. what does Pharaoh do

1018. when he sees the Hebrews

  1019. being fruitful

  1020. and multiplying

  1021. and filling his land?

  1022. He says,

1023. this has got to stop.

1024. This is not good for me.

1025. This is not good for the world,

  1026. for my empire.

  1027. So he enslaves them.

  1028. He reduces image bearers

  1029. to units of production

  1030. who make bricks

  1031. to build store cities

  1032. so that he can,

  1033. you know,

  1034. accumulate and store

  1035. and accumulate and store

  1036. and produce and consume

  1037. and produce and consume

  1038. without limit

  1039. and at the expense

  1040. of his expendable slaves.

  1041. And yet,

  1042. when slavery doesn't stop

  1043. their fruitfulness,

1044. they continue to grow in number.

  1045. He commands

1046. that their sons be killed.

1047. He cranks up the oppression.

  1048. Throw every Hebrew boy

  1049. into the Nile

  1050. by violently opposing

  1051. the creator's blessing

  1052. upon the world

1053. that his people be fruitful,

  1054. multiply,

1055. fill the earth with his image.

  1056. Pharaoh,

  1057. as an anti-creator character,

1058. not only hurts the Hebrews,

  1059. but he even hurts

  1060. his own empire.

  1061. Because what happens

  1062. when God looks down

  1063. upon his people

  1064. crying out

  1065. under the thumb

  1066. of this Egyptian anti-creator?

  1067. Well, creation itself

  1068. starts to come apart

1069. in Egypt through the plagues,

  1070. right?

  1071. The Nile,

1072. the source of Egypt's life,

  1073. turns to blood.

  1074. Fish and livestock die.

  1075. Crops are destroyed.

1076. The sun stops giving light.

  1077. Darkness covers the land.

  1078. It's like they're going backwards

  1079. from the creation story.

  1080. And death comes upon

  1081. every household

1082. that has not placed its faith

1083. in the true creator God.

  1084. Under Pharaoh's reign,

  1085. within his imagination,

  1086. creation,

  1087. Egypt experiences

  1088. de-creation.

  1089. The national order

  1090. that Pharaoh was so

  1091. desperate to control

  1092. comes apart

  1093. in his bloody hands.

  1094. And all of his,

  1095. and all of this,

1096. it reaches its climax here

  1097. in Exodus 14

  1098. at the Red Sea,

  1099. where just as Pharaoh

  1100. had weaponized

1101. the waters of the Nile

  1102. against those Hebrew boys,

  1103. now the waters

  1104. of the Red Sea

  1105. are about to fall

  1106. in judgment

  1107. upon the warriors

  1108. of Egypt.

  1109. But you know

  1110. what's interesting

1111. is that for God's people,

  1112. those same waters

  1113. became the place

  1114. of new creation

  1115. and life

  1116. and salvation.

  1117. They're like baptismal waters

  1118. for them.

1119. Just like in the beginning

1120. and just like when God

  1121. started over with Noah,

  1122. the wind blew,

  1123. the waters moved,

  1124. the ground appeared,

  1125. and God's people emerged

  1126. on the other side.

1127. But why only for Israel

1128. and not also for Egypt?

  1129. When Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11:29

  1130. verse 29,

1131. it says that by faith,

  1132. the people passed through

  1133. the Red Sea

  1134. as on dry land.

  1135. But when the Egyptians

  1136. tried to do so,

  1137. they were drowned.

1138. Did you hear the difference?

  1139. It's by faith.

1140. By faith in God's word.

  1141. When God told them

  1142. in verse 15,

  1143. tell the Israelites

  1144. to move on,

  1145. they did.

  1146. They simply took

  1147. step by step

  1148. by faith,

  1149. walking through

  1150. the treacherous sea

  1151. between the walls

  1152. of water

  1153. that they just

  1154. had to trust

  1155. would not come

  1156. collapsing down

  1157. on them.

  1158. But Egypt,

  1159. Egypt charges in

  1160. trusting not

  1161. in the word

  1162. of the Lord,

  1163. but trusting

  1164. in what Egypt

  1165. had always put

  1166. its trust in,

  1167. in horses,

  1168. in chariots,

  1169. in military strength.

  1170. And right there

  1171. in the middle

  1172. of the sea,

  1173. that's where

  1174. Pharaoh's imagination

  1175. finally dies.

  1176. Because the chariots

  1177. can't save them.

  1178. Verse 25 says,

  1179. God jams their wheels.

  1180. Think about that.

  1181. The very technology

  1182. that made Egypt

  1183. look unstoppable.

  1184. The very thing

  1185. Pharaoh trusted

  1186. to secure

  1187. his desired future

  1188. became useless,

  1189. a hindrance to him.

  1190. And the Egyptians

  1191. finally recognize here

  1192. and cry out

  1193. what Israel should have

  1194. known and believed

  1195. all along.

  1196. Yahweh is fighting

  1197. for them.

  1198. Yahweh is fighting

  1199. for his people

  1200. and not as some

  1201. king kidnapping,

1202. not as like a king

  1203. who's like kidnapping

  1204. some immigrant laborers

  1205. to build his own

  1206. alternative empire.

  1207. No.

  1208. He doesn't call them

  1209. to himself

  1210. to be his slaves.

  1211. Do you remember

  1212. what Yahweh told Pharaoh

  1213. all the way back

  1214. in Exodus chapter 4?

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  1215. In Exodus chapter 4,

    Exodus 4:22

  1216. verse 22 and 23,

  1217. Yahweh tells Moses

  1218. to say to Pharaoh,

1219. Israel is my firstborn son.

  1220. Let my son go

1221. so he may worship me.

  1222. And this is who

1223. the Hebrews have always been

  1224. in God's eyes,

  1225. not Pharaoh's slaves,

  1226. Yahweh's sons,

  1227. Yahweh's children.

1228. So you see what God

1229. is doing here at the Red Sea

1230. in the whole book of Exodus.

  1231. This isn't just God

  1232. getting his son

  1233. out of Pharaoh's house.

  1234. He's beginning to get

1235. the mind of a slave

  1236. out of his sons,

  1237. out of Israel.

  1238. Because slaves,

  1239. slaves look up,

  1240. they see Pharaoh

  1241. and they tremble.

  1242. Slaves assume

1243. Pharaoh gets the final word.

  1244. Slaves think the future

  1245. belongs to the one

  1246. with the most

  1247. threatening whip.

  1248. But God is teaching

  1249. these slaves

  1250. what it means

  1251. to live as sons,

  1252. to look up

  1253. and see more

  1254. than Pharaoh's chariots,

1255. but to see the Lord

  1256. of hosts,

1257. who is at the same time

  1258. their liberating king

  1259. and their affectionate father.

  1260. He's teaching his sons

  1261. to receive his word

1262. and walk in his ways,

  1263. not by the crack

  1264. of the whip

  1265. as I did

  1266. with my girls

  1267. this past week,

1268. but with a mighty hand

  1269. and an outstretched arm

  1270. and with a gentle,

  1271. patient,

  1272. and loving posture

  1273. toward his grumbly children.

1274. See, the point of Exodus

  1275. isn't simply

  1276. liberation from slavery,

  1277. but liberation for

  1278. and unto sonship.

  1279. The point of Exodus

  1280. isn't simply,

  1281. wow, Yahweh is

  1282. a powerful God

  1283. worth trusting,

  1284. but Yahweh is also

  1285. a loving father

  1286. worth living with.

  1287. And man,

  1288. I think that's what

  1289. I was missing

  1290. when I was Pharaoh

  1291. to my daughters

  1292. in my home

  1293. this past week.

  1294. living within the imagination

  1295. of Pharaoh

  1296. and his empire.

  1297. I thought being a good father

  1298. meant controlling my daughters.

  1299. I thought I needed

  1300. to control them

  1301. with force and pressure

  1302. and more and more

  1303. threatening cracks

  1304. of the whip.

  1305. But you know,

  1306. on Friday,

  1307. after like really

  1308. just laying it

  1309. into my girls

1310. before they hit it off

  1311. to school,

1312. I went for my daily walk

  1313. with my dog Sammy

  1314. and with God

  1315. and my heart sank

1316. and I had to fight back tears.

  1317. Why?

  1318. Because I knew

  1319. that the father

1320. I had been to my girls

  1321. that morning

  1322. was so far

  1323. from the father

  1324. I've been trying

1325. to point my girls to

1326. in these past eight years

  1327. of being a dad.

  1328. Our father in heaven.

  1329. Hallowed be his name.

  1330. Our holy and good,

  1331. good father

  1332. who is a father

  1333. without equal.

1334. And it wasn't even just

  1335. that I was treating

1336. my girls like my slaves,

  1337. but man,

  1338. at the same time

1339. that I was playing Pharaoh,

  1340. I too was treating

  1341. my own self

  1342. as a slave.

  1343. A slave to Pharaoh's imagination,

1344. a slave to the idea

  1345. that cracking the whip

  1346. is the only way

1347. to win in this world.

  1348. Sure,

1349. I was holding the whip,

  1350. but I was acting

1351. way more like a slave

  1352. than a son.

  1353. You know,

1354. in the Gospel of Luke,

  1355. chapter nine,

  1356. Jesus is up there

  1357. on the mount

  1358. of transfiguration.

  1359. Transfiguration.

  1360. And as he's praying,

1361. his face and his clothes

  1362. all become bright

  1363. and glorious,

  1364. and then Moses appears

  1365. with Elijah,

  1366. and they start talking

1367. to Jesus about his departure,

  1368. or in the Greek,

  1369. his exodus.

  1370. And basically,

  1371. they're talking about

  1372. his cross,

  1373. his sacrifice,

  1374. or what Jesus calls

  1375. his own baptism.

1376. The way he will put sin

  1377. to death

  1378. through his blood

  1379. and triumph over death

  1380. and evil

  1381. by taking upon himself

  1382. the deathly judgment

  1383. threatening all God's children.

  1384. So,

  1385. they're on this mountain,

  1386. right?

  1387. They're talking about

  1388. how he will become

  1389. the ultimate Passover lamb

  1390. whose blood will cover

  1391. and protect every child

  1392. of God from judgment.

1393. But then Peter comes in,

  1394. right?

  1395. And he's like,

  1396. Master,

1397. it is good for us

  1398. to be here.

  1399. Let us start building

  1400. some shelters

  1401. for you guys.

  1402. And Luke tells us

  1403. he did not know

  1404. what he was saying.

  1405. It's almost like

  1406. all Peter could think

  1407. to do was to

1408. try to make himself useful,

  1409. to serve,

  1410. try to build something,

  1411. get something done,

  1412. bring value,

  1413. advance the ball

  1414. a couple more yards

  1415. for God.

  1416. And I wonder

1417. if that's how so many of us

1418. show up in the world.

1419. We wake up every day

1420. trying to advance the ball

  1421. a couple more yards.

1422. And when we hit obstacles,

1423. we get more and more forceful.

  1424. And to us,

1425. it just feels like resilience.

  1426. It just feels like

1427. the natural way of the world.

1428. That's how you get stuff done,

  1429. right?

  1430. And sure,

1431. we want to be Christians

  1432. who are diligent.

  1433. But how often

  1434. does our diligence

  1435. actually turn into

  1436. desperation

  1437. and being incredibly demanding?

1438. How often does our diligence

  1439. come more from anxiety

  1440. and insecurity

  1441. and a slavish mindset

1442. than from the humble desire

  1443. of a son

  1444. to honor his father

1445. but within our God-given limits?

  1446. You know,

  1447. when Peter seemingly goes

  1448. into servant-slave mode,

1449. it's always stuck out to me

1450. what God says to him

1451. at the Mount of Transfiguration.

  1452. He says,

  1453. Peter,

  1454. this is my son

  1455. whom I love.

  1456. With him,

  1457. I am well pleased.

  1458. Just listen to him.

1459. It's like God was telling Peter,

  1460. Peter,

  1461. my son,

1462. I didn't ask you to do anything

1463. other than fix your eyes

  1464. on my son

  1465. whom I love.

  1466. You see this?

  1467. You see this brilliance?

1468. You see my delight in him?

1469. How pleased I am with him?

1470. This is the whole thing,

  1471. Peter.

  1472. The very thing

  1473. he came to accomplish

  1474. and offer.

  1475. Peter,

1476. you don't need to build

  1477. something for the son.

  1478. You need the son

1479. to accomplish something for you.

  1480. Listen to him.

  1481. Look at him.

  1482. Love him.

  1483. Lean on him.

  1484. Because this son

  1485. is about to accomplish

  1486. the exodus

  1487. that none of us

  1488. could ever accomplish

  1489. for ourselves.

  1490. At the first exodus,

  1491. Israel stood between

1492. their old life of slavery

  1493. and the seemingly

  1494. only other option,

  1495. the waters of death,

  1496. until their mediator,

  1497. Moses,

  1498. with a mighty

  1499. and outstretched arm,

  1500. right,

  1501. as if it was

1502. the very hand of God

  1503. made a way,

  1504. a way of salvation

  1505. through the deathly waters

  1506. into life

  1507. and freedom

  1508. through the sea.

  1509. And when Pharaoh's

  1510. forces followed,

  1511. they didn't survive

  1512. the baptism

  1513. of the Red Sea.

  1514. There was no exodus

  1515. for them

  1516. because they had

  1517. no mediator

  1518. to follow by faith.

  1519. But now,

  1520. a greater mediator

  1521. has come.

  1522. And he's gone

  1523. through a greater baptism

  1524. all alone at first

  1525. to accomplish

  1526. a far greater exodus.

  1527. Except this time,

  1528. this mediator's hand

  1529. seems far less mighty.

  1530. Instead of clutching

  1531. a wooden staff,

  1532. it's pierced through,

  1533. outstretched

  1534. and nailed

1535. to a cross of wood.

  1536. And when this mediator

  1537. is baptized

1538. in the judgment of God,

  1539. he actually tastes

  1540. death for you

  1541. and for me

  1542. to bear the judgment

1543. that every child of God

  1544. but him

  1545. has ever deserved

  1546. for all the ways

  1547. that we feared

  1548. and followed

  1549. the pharaohs

  1550. of this world

  1551. instead of our

  1552. Father in heaven.

  1553. And it's not until

  1554. the third day

  1555. that he emerges

  1556. from the waters

  1557. of judgment,

  1558. but emerge he does

  1559. to guarantee

  1560. resurrection life,

  1561. new creation,

1562. to chart a new way

  1563. in our broken world

  1564. in which there often

  1565. seems to be

  1566. no good way,

  1567. no good option,

  1568. no good possible outcome.

1569. This is what he does

1570. and this is the gospel.

  1571. The gospel of Exodus,

1572. the gospel of new creation,

  1573. the gospel of sonship

  1574. for former slaves

  1575. like you and me.

1576. Slaves to sin and death,

  1577. slaves to the imagination

  1578. of Pharaoh

  1579. and slaves to fear

  1580. and terror

  1581. and insecurity.

  1582. Jesus,

  1583. the greater Moses,

  1584. Yahweh himself,

  1585. the Messiah King

1586. has come in the flesh,

1587. not to crack the whip,

1588. but to bear the whip

  1589. in our place

  1590. to bring many sons

  1591. to glory.

  1592. So,

1593. if this is our God,

  1594. why would we continue

  1595. to live with

  1596. limited imaginations

  1597. determined by the empires

  1598. of Pharaoh?

  1599. Why would we continue

  1600. to tremble before

  1601. the chariots

  1602. and keep living

1603. like no one can save us

  1604. but ourselves

  1605. when instead

  1606. we can live

  1607. in our Father's love

  1608. and liberty

  1609. and in the fullness

  1610. and freedom

  1611. won for us

  1612. in Christ?

  1613. So,

  1614. as we move on

  1615. toward Moses' law,

  1616. this,

  1617. the gospel,

  1618. it's so essential.

  1619. The Ten Commandments

  1620. aren't new restrictions

1621. for a newly enslaved people,

1622. but they are the way

  1623. that liberated children

  1624. of God

  1625. live in harmony

  1626. with their Father

  1627. and with each other

  1628. after the image

  1629. of Christ.

  1630. So,

  1631. let's live that way

  1632. and trust Him.

  1633. Let's pray.

  1634. Let's pray.

  1635. Let's pray.

  1636. Let's pray.

  1637. Lord,

  1638. would you expand

  1639. our imaginations

  1640. to see the world

  1641. as you see it,

  1642. to know that

  1643. with you

  1644. and in you

  1645. all things are possible

  1646. and all things

  1647. turn out for good

1648. for those who love Christ.

  1649. We thank you

  1650. for our better

  1651. mediator Christ,

  1652. for His baptism,

  1653. for His exodus,

  1654. and that you have

  1655. graciously invited us

  1656. to join Him

  1657. in that baptism,

  1658. in that exodus.

  1659. God,

1660. let us set our eyes

  1661. on Jesus

  1662. and would He

  1663. prove Himself

  1664. to be the author

  1665. and perfecter

  1666. of our faith

  1667. and would our lives

  1668. demonstrate to the world

  1669. all the possibilities

  1670. that are in you

  1671. and only in you.

1672. In your Son's name we pray.

  1673. Amen.
