  1. It's good to be here with you guys tonight. It's been such a blessing to serve at Advent in a

  2. fellow's role, and I'm really, really excited to talk about this parable tonight. One of the things

  3. that Tommy said to me as he was sort of prepping me tonight to speak was he said, remember one thing,

  4. if nothing else, that God loves these people, and so do you. And that's a profound statement,

  5. both from Tommy but also in this story that Jesus is trying to get across, that Jesus' love is so deep

  6. and so wide that it's meant for everyone, and there's not a person in this room who can't receive

  7. that. So saying that, let's open with a quote from English priest C.F. Andrews, who served as a

  8. missionary in India for most of his life, and it says this, Christ seeks from us deeds, not words.

  9. Devotion to him is in the first place not sentimental, but practical. If the Christian

  10. faith has no power to restore or recreate the human will, leading one to deeds of unselfish service,

  11. then it stands self-condemned.

  12. Well, after saying to you that Jesus loves you and then saying that if we're not doing anything

  13. about it, the faith stands self-condemned, I think we need to look into it a little bit more

  14. together and talk about it. So tonight as we wrap up the parable series, I want to really dive into the

  15. idea that throughout Jesus' ministry, and specifically here, what he's doing is he's reorienting the way

  16. that people look at faith. He's reorienting the way people approach the relationship with God,

  17. with any God, but specifically with the one true God, his Father and our Father.

  18. He's reorienting the way that our lives should be lived. He's reorienting the way that we should see

  19. our very selves. No longer is it an inward faith. No longer can it be about ourselves,

  20. or how good the sacrifice we bring to the table,

  21. but it becomes about the kingdom, and about God's glory, and it becomes outward-facing,

  22. and missional in its essence.

  23. This has never been more real and more necessary for the church than it is today, for a long time.

  24. The church in our culture has been sort of a center point of culture. It's often community centers.

  25. It's often been the place of gathering. For many, many years, the church, as you all know,

  26. the church is a place where truth came from, and culture accepted what the church said as truth.

  27. But we find ourselves in a time where the church is no longer a city center,

  28. and biblical truth is no longer truth. In fact, truth is not truth at all, and

  29. anything that's relative may be truth or may not be truth, and

  30. we could have a discussion philosophically about that at a different point. I won't probably be a part of it,

  31. but feel free.

  32. So tonight, let me propose two questions for us to ponder as we walk through this parable.

  33. The first is this. Would you rather be a part of a community, cared for, loved, and defended,

  34. or would you rather be alone, unaware of the dangers around you, without protection, and defenseless?

  35. And secondly, if you could choose for every person you've ever met,

  36. what would your choice for them be in that first question?

  37. You see, this is what Jesus is laying out for the people that he's talking to in this parable.

  38. It's what he wants us to understand and dwell with tonight.

  39. And he answers them as well, and the answer comes in the form of a call and an offer,

  40. and we'll get back to that at the end.

  41. So tonight, we're going to do a little bit of a heart inspection on ourselves and on the church.

  42. We're going to look deeper to understand what this offer and call might look like for us,

  43. both as individuals and as a community.

  44. And we're going to do so by looking at the heart of the Pharisees

  45. and the heart of the shepherd in this story.

  46. Let's pray.

  47. Heavenly Father God, we thank you so much for loving us.

  48. We thank you so much for the grace you've given to us, for the gift you've given us.

  49. God, as we walk through this story, let us see and receive the offer and answer the call.

  50. God, be with us tonight.

  51. Let your spirit fill this place, open our hearts and minds to you.

  52. In your name we pray.

  53. Amen.

  54. All right, so we'll kick off with a very, very short summary

  55. of what Jesus is dealing with here in his audience,

  56. and then we'll take a look at both the heart of the Pharisees and the heart of the shepherd.

  57. So Jesus here, he's, in this context, he's speaking to sort of two parties here.

  58. He's speaking both to the sinners, the lost, the broken.

  59. He's also speaking to the Pharisees and the Israelites and those who are sort of steeped in God tradition.

  60. The believers, if I can put it that way.

  61. And what's going on here is those believers, the Pharisees, the ones who claimed God,

  62. were extremely hostile towards Jesus and his ministry.

  63. They're hostile towards his lifestyle, spending time and dining with, you know,

  64. with the destitute, with thieves, with harlots, with tax collectors.

  65. Really, they were upset that Jesus decided to spend most of his time

  66. with the most despicable people of their culture.

  67. And just before this, what really got them riled up in chapter 14,

  68. if we were to go back,

  69. is Jesus says,

  70. understand this,

  71. God is giving the kingdom to the outcasts of society.

  72. Those of you who have it in a row,

  73. this is Jesus speaking to the Pharisees,

  74. who have all your ducks lined up,

  75. you need to be careful.

  76. You need to listen.

  77. And so Jesus uses this parable to appeal to the common sense of both sides of the crowd

  78. and to show the reality of this ministry that he's come to bring and start and grow.

  79. And he does it both in the face of those who despise what he's doing

  80. and for those who, for the first time in their lives,

  81. have been invited in to a worship of the real God.

  82. The analogy of a shepherd that's used in this story is not a new one to them.

  83. It was well understood by both sides, the Pharisees and the sinners.

  84. They would have understood the shepherd and his role to be a selfless,

  85. humble, and extremely difficult life calling.

  86. One that involves much self-sacrifice.

  87. And in all honesty and analogy, that was drastically, drastically different

  88. than the legalistic and moralistic elitism

  89. that the Pharisees and religious leaders

  90. had come to portray faith to be.

  91. For us, maybe a shepherd doesn't work so well.

  92. I don't know if any of you tend sheep.

  93. I've sheared a sheep in my life, and I come from the Midwest,

  94. so I don't expect any of you to have done the same.

  95. And if you have, God bless you even more.

  96. But so maybe for us it would be more prudent to talk about it as a teacher and her students.

  97. Think about it like an elementary teacher and her class going on a field trip,

  98. going to the zoo, perhaps.

  99. And on this field trip they go and they have a good time,

  100. and they're all at the zoo together.

  101. And when it comes time to leave, the students come back to the bus.

  102. But there's one student missing.

  103. Now what Jesus says in this parable is the teacher is going to put the students on the bus

  104. and go back and find the student,

  105. to which all of us should rightly say,

  106. exactly.

  107. Right.

  108. It makes sense.

  109. That's exactly what the people here are saying.

  110. Okay.

  111. Where are you going with this, Jesus?

  112. This makes perfect sense.

  113. But we know you're taking it somewhere, and so he did.

  114. Maybe a better way of putting it yet is in the words of Archbishop of Canterbury,

  115. William Temple, who says this,

  116. the church is the only society in the world

  117. that exists for the benefit of those who are not yet its members.

  118. And so we must then tonight look at the heart of the Pharisees,

  119. and then after that look at the heart of the shepherd.

  120. So let's start with the heart of the Pharisees then.

  121. The heart of the Pharisees was very much a self-centered heart.

  122. For them, God was inward.

  123. He was a secret.

  124. He was something that they sort of controlled and manipulated.

  125. Throughout their history,

  126. they had sort of bargained with God

  127. and thought that they sort of had him under control

  128. and had him figured out.

  129. They should have seen by that point that it didn't work,

  130. because when they tried that,

  131. they ended up serving other nations and kings and rulers.

  132. They ended up as slaves

  133. and in not good situations.

  134. But they didn't learn.

  135. They still had this mindset.

  136. And there was an exclusivity to go with that.

  137. There was this self-centered heart bred individualism,

  138. and it bred ownership.

  139. See, in the story, the sheep belonged to the shepherd,

  140. but what had happened in the audience Jesus was talking to

  141. is the religious leaders and the Israelites

  142. had deemed themselves the shepherd.

  143. They'd sort of tried to misplace God

  144. and take the role and become the headship

  145. and choose who got to have their God

  146. rather than God getting to say who gets to have him.

  147. And this doesn't work.

  148. It doesn't work for a variety of reasons.

  149. The main reason it doesn't work

  150. is because it leads to a fortification,

  151. a heart of fortification,

  152. sort of a protect-this-house mentality.

  153. Right?

  154. But we all know that when things on the inside aren't good,

  155. the walls crumble from the outside inward.

  156. When things get to the point

  157. that you have to protect what's inside

  158. rather than going outward and building,

  159. things aren't good.

  160. In the business world,

  161. when you have to start cutting out your own business

  162. and costs and expenses

  163. rather than being able to use money

  164. to grow your business,

  165. the situation's not good.

  166. But yet this is the track they chose to take

  167. as a protect-this-house mentality.

  168. It may not be unlike some of your children

  169. or unlike my childhood at Christmastime.

  170. When I was eight,

  171. I received an electric race car track.

  172. I don't know if you guys remember these.

  173. These were big when I was a child.

  174. I didn't get one the first year without,

  175. and I was devastated about it.

  176. I was convinced Santa was dead.

  177. I came to believe that he's just a year late.

  178. Because when I turned eight

  179. and got to Christmas that next year,

  180. lo and behold,

  181. I got my electric race car track.

  182. You see, the thing about these race car tracks

  183. is there were two lanes

  184. and there was two controllers,

  185. and they were meant to be played with someone.

  186. But I didn't want to.

  187. I wanted to run both controllers.

  188. I didn't care about racing, winning, or losing.

  189. It was my race car track,

  190. and therefore I was going to play with it.

  191. So though my little brother wanted to play

  192. and my dad demanded that he play,

  193. I refused.

  194. I said, no.

  195. If he's going to play, I'm not going to play.

  196. And my dad said, that's fine.

  197. Then don't play.

  198. And that's sort of what Jesus is saying here.

  199. All right?

  200. You both can play,

  201. and if you choose not to, that's fine.

  202. But they're going to get to play.

  203. But you see, what happened is I proceeded to play,

  204. and shortly thereafter I realized

  205. how much fun I was missing out on.

  206. Because the real joy

  207. in having a two-lane race car track

  208. as an eight-year-old child

  209. is destroying your five-year-old brother in a race.

  210. Right?

  211. Because he wasn't nearly as coordinated

  212. as I was at that point.

  213. If we were to do it again today,

  214. he'd probably beat me.

  215. But we don't have the track anymore,

  216. so I can still claim victory.

  217. All right.

  218. The other thing that you get

  219. out of a self-centered heart

  220. in the example of the Pharisees

  221. is this elitism I referenced.

  222. See, they think they're better.

  223. They think they're better

  224. and therefore more deserving.

  225. And because they're more deserving,

  226. then they're more loved by God.

  227. If we were to sit here

  228. and just make that statement,

  229. it's easy to sit in our seats

  230. or stand up here even

  231. and say, well, that's backwards.

  232. Obviously, no one is more loved by God.

  233. But you see, Jesus never leaves

  234. at surface level.

  235. He always takes a little bit deeper.

  236. So I want us to take just a moment

  237. and take it a little bit deeper.

  238. This heart of elitism,

  239. before you judge the Pharisees

  240. and the Israelites of the day

  241. too harshly,

  242. think about our own lives

  243. for a second.

  244. How often do we compare?

  245. Compare ourselves to other people.

  246. Other people in our field of vocation.

  247. Other parents, maybe,

  248. and how they raise their children.

  249. Other churches,

  250. and how they operate.

  251. Other neighborhoods,

  252. other cities.

  253. Right?

  254. Whatever it is,

  255. our lives and our culture

  256. is built around comparisons.

  257. And when we buy into comparisons,

  258. what we've immediately done

  259. is established a level of elitism.

  260. The very thing Jesus said

  261. doesn't work in my kingdom.

  262. So before we judge them,

  263. let's make sure that comparison

  264. is something that we try to avoid.

  265. And the last thing here

  266. in the heart of the Pharisees

  267. is Jesus is opening them up

  268. to a heart check.

  269. The same way he's opening us up tonight.

  270. He says very clearly in the passage,

  271. you all are sheep.

  272. Right?

  273. He separates the 99 from the one.

  274. Right?

  275. The group,

  276. the large community,

  277. and the lost.

  278. But none of them are elephants.

  279. None of them are lions or bears.

  280. What you have here

  281. is a group of sheep.

  282. Some are together

  283. and some aren't there yet,

  284. but we're all sheep.

  285. And so that means

  286. that we're all completely broken.

  287. We all have the same level

  288. of brokenness,

  289. but we're all open

  290. to the same availability

  291. of complete and total grace.

  292. And Jesus is telling them

  293. that their faith

  294. is that duty of a shepherd's

  295. that as a community

  296. to carry on the role of shepherd.

  297. But as individuals

  298. to never forget

  299. that we're mere sheep.

  300. The heart of a shepherd then.

  301. How does this contrast

  302. or look different

  303. than the Pharisee's heart?

  304. It's a selfless heart

  305. instead of a self-centered heart.

  306. First and foremost,

  307. in this parable,

  308. Jesus is telling them

  309. and telling us

  310. God cares about the lost.

  311. Now before we go any further,

  312. I want you to take notice

  313. that he offers

  314. a token of comfort here

  315. that we might miss.

  316. And let's pause

  317. for a bit of good exegesis

  318. as well,

  319. just briefly.

  320. All right,

  321. it's easy to read this passage

  322. and to see this

  323. leaving of the 99

  324. in the open country

  325. as it says

  326. and go after the one

  327. that is lost

  328. until he finds it.

  329. Now upon just reading this,

  330. if you're like me

  331. and you read it

  332. and you think

  333. 99,

  334. open country,

  335. that's not very much care.

  336. Right?

  337. But in fact,

  338. it's total care

  339. of the 99

  340. that he shows

  341. in that statement

  342. because you see

  343. in the translation

  344. from the Greek

  345. and the words

  346. that Jesus spoke

  347. and what he meant,

  348. the word open country

  349. actually means

  350. a safe,

  351. sort of solituded pasture

  352. up on the mountainside.

  353. They didn't have fences

  354. all over the place.

  355. Shepherds traveled.

  356. They journeyed

  357. where the grass grew.

  358. And so for Jesus

  359. to make a point

  360. of stating

  361. that the 99

  362. were in the open country

  363. is essentially

  364. for him to say

  365. they were safe

  366. and then the shepherd

  367. turned immediately.

  368. So the focus is

  369. without hesitation

  370. the shepherd's

  371. instantaneous pursuit

  372. of the lost sheep

  373. but I don't want you

  374. to miss

  375. that he also

  376. puts the 99

  377. in safe place.

  378. Alright.

  379. So what does it

  380. mean then

  381. to say that God

  382. cares about the lost?

  383. It means a couple

  384. of things, alright?

  385. It means that God

  386. seeks after the lost.

  387. He seeks after the lost

  388. and this seeking

  389. after the lost

  390. happens in three ways,

  391. three primary ways.

  392. First,

  393. it's an active search.

  394. The shepherd

  395. actively seeks.

  396. He doesn't turn over

  397. this obligation

  398. to a ranch hand

  399. or a hired hand

  400. or a college kid

  401. who had a few free hours

  402. at the end of the day.

  403. Right?

  404. He didn't wait

  405. until the next morning

  406. and go out

  407. with a group of buddies

  408. to go on a search.

  409. He dropped

  410. what he was doing.

  411. He didn't

  412. delegate the role

  413. and he went

  414. all out.

  415. A hundred percent

  416. he went all out

  417. for this one sheep.

  418. He invests his time

  419. and risks

  420. his life

  421. for the lost.

  422. We can see that

  423. no clearer

  424. than on the cross.

  425. not far down

  426. the line

  427. in Luke

  428. where the search

  429. for the lost

  430. ends

  431. with his death

  432. on the cross

  433. for you

  434. and for me.

  435. Secondly,

  436. it's an incessant search.

  437. You see,

  438. in the text

  439. we see that the shepherd

  440. doesn't quit seeking.

  441. He doesn't search

  442. and then break

  443. for coffee.

  444. Right?

  445. My grandfather's a farmer.

  446. I'm familiar

  447. with farm culture

  448. and farm time

  449. and it goes

  450. a little something

  451. like this.

  452. 8 a.m. breakfast,

  453. 10 a.m. coffee,

  454. 12 p.m. lunch,

  455. 2 p.m. coffee,

  456. 4 p.m. coffee,

  457. 5 p.m. go home.

  458. Right?

  459. That's farm schedule.

  460. However,

  461. the shepherd here

  462. throws out

  463. his own agenda,

  464. his own coffee,

  465. his own lunch.

  466. He throws out

  467. his own sleep cycle,

  468. in fact.

  469. And he goes

  470. without stopping

  471. until he arrives

  472. at the sheep.

  473. His needs

  474. fall after

  475. the needs

  476. of the sheep.

  477. His care for self

  478. comes second

  479. to the care

  480. for his flock.

  481. You see,

  482. Jesus is teaching

  483. in this moment

  484. that no person,

  485. no harlot,

  486. no thief,

  487. no tax collector,

  488. no religious elite,

  489. no Israelite,

  490. no Gentile,

  491. no one,

  492. no level of brokenness

  493. could ever keep

  494. the shepherd

  495. from seeking for you.

  496. You're never,

  497. ever too far away

  498. for the love of Jesus

  499. to get to you.

  500. And thirdly,

  501. it's a burdensome search.

  502. We see at the end

  503. of this search

  504. in Luke 15,

  505. in this story,

  506. that the shepherd

  507. doesn't only find

  508. the sheep,

  509. he proceeds

  510. to pick up the sheep

  511. and carry him back.

  512. I raise dogs,

  513. have all my life,

  514. love it,

  515. but I tell you what,

  516. when a dog runs off

  517. and I have to go

  518. seeking the dog,

  519. I do so actively,

  520. I do so incessantly,

  521. but I promise you

  522. I don't bear the burden

  523. of the dog

  524. at the end of the search.

  525. That dog is going to march

  526. its happy hind end

  527. back to the kennel

  528. alongside of me,

  529. not on my shoulders.

  530. Because I'm not Jesus.

  531. But you see,

  532. Jesus says that he carries

  533. the lost sheep back.

  534. He doesn't rebuke it

  535. for wandering,

  536. there's no scolding

  537. that we see here.

  538. Rather, he picks it up

  539. and acts in a labor of love.

  540. More selfless love.

  541. He provides rest

  542. to the sheep

  543. at his own expense.

  544. Let me tell you

  545. a story real quick

  546. about my brother Zach.

  547. He came with our youth group,

  548. he lives in California,

  549. he's planting a church

  550. in the San Diego area

  551. right now.

  552. God bless him.

  553. But he came to Alaska

  554. with the youth group

  555. that I lead this summer.

  556. And what happened

  557. on one of the very first days

  558. is one of the kids

  559. on the way down a mountain

  560. tripped and fell

  561. and broke their toe.

  562. Well, you see,

  563. on the way down the mountain,

  564. how far down is the question

  565. and how far to go

  566. is the problem.

  567. It happened at the peak.

  568. And so he needed help

  569. getting all the way

  570. back down the mountain.

  571. My brother,

  572. without saying a word,

  573. picked his kid up

  574. and put him on his shoulders

  575. and hiked him down a mountain.

  576. 37% incline.

  577. Didn't put him down

  578. the whole time.

  579. Didn't say a word.

  580. Didn't complain

  581. once all trip.

  582. By day four of the trip,

  583. we went on another hike

  584. and my brother

  585. had to walk down and up

  586. both sides of the hike

  587. backwards

  588. because his knees

  589. gave out every step

  590. he took forwards.

  591. He didn't complain once.

  592. He did it with a smile

  593. on his face

  594. because God has given

  595. my brother this capacity

  596. to love like Jesus

  597. and to love selflessly.

  598. The same love,

  599. the same shepherding gift

  600. that God calls us,

  601. his church,

  602. to emulate.

  603. And this all happens

  604. and is first exemplified

  605. by Jesus.

  606. Like I said a while ago,

  607. what he did at the cross,

  608. as we'll say in a little while,

  609. for you

  610. and for many,

  611. was a gift

  612. that comes only

  613. from a selfless heart,

  614. a shepherd's heart.

  615. And then God rejoices

  616. in the finding

  617. and redemption

  618. of the lost.

  619. This is the most spectacular

  620. part of the story to me.

  621. The most beautiful part

  622. of Jesus

  623. and our faith

  624. is that

  625. not only does he seek

  626. and find,

  627. he then rejoices.

  628. See, he didn't get back

  629. and then go take a nap

  630. or sleep

  631. and then rejoice.

  632. He didn't plan a party

  633. for some time

  634. down the road.

  635. As he was coming back

  636. up the hill,

  637. he says it's time

  638. to have a party

  639. because the sheep is back.

  640. Right?

  641. He doesn't break

  642. because it's more important

  643. to him that they celebrate

  644. than anything else

  645. in the world.

  646. Rejoicing

  647. is what God

  648. calls his friends

  649. and neighbors to

  650. in the finding

  651. of the lost sheep.

  652. Much alike

  653. one of our first

  654. and foremost callings

  655. as the church

  656. ought to be rejoicing.

  657. Rejoicing

  658. the moment

  659. and every moment

  660. an unbeliever

  661. claims Jesus.

  662. There's no greater joy

  663. for the shepherd

  664. than the return

  665. of the lost sheep.

  666. And he gives everything

  667. everything of himself

  668. and his flock

  669. and finds his ultimate joy

  670. in the finding.

  671. I want to step aside

  672. from the story

  673. for a second

  674. to talk about

  675. our church

  676. and to talk about

  677. core groups

  678. and the vision

  679. of core groups

  680. briefly.

  681. The O in core group

  682. talks about

  683. outward facing

  684. being outward facing

  685. communities.

  686. What a beautiful vision.

  687. Right?

  688. The question then is

  689. how many of our core groups

  690. have made this a priority

  691. and part of the essence

  692. of the very group itself?

  693. is your group focused

  694. on being a family

  695. for the lonely

  696. the lost

  697. for the abandoned

  698. in your neighborhood?

  699. It's a journey.

  700. If you're sitting there

  701. right now saying

  702. no it feels a little bit

  703. more like a

  704. pharisaical click

  705. don't worry.

  706. The journey means

  707. that growth happens

  708. starting right there.

  709. If you're sitting there

  710. saying yeah

  711. our group's really good

  712. at that

  713. wonderful

  714. share with us

  715. how you do it

  716. so we can all learn better.

  717. The easy tendency

  718. in this

  719. is to love each other

  720. and fortify ourselves.

  721. The struggle really

  722. is to build relationships

  723. instead of fences.

  724. Right?

  725. How many fences

  726. do you see

  727. or gates

  728. in D.C.?

  729. Well one around

  730. nearly every government

  731. building.

  732. Right?

  733. One around most walls.

  734. We live in a culture

  735. of fences

  736. and Christ calls us

  737. to take down fences

  738. and instead

  739. build relationships.

  740. To those here tonight

  741. without a core group

  742. or maybe this is your

  743. first time here at Advent

  744. how beautiful

  745. does it sound

  746. to know that you

  747. have a family

  748. right here

  749. in this room

  750. and in your community

  751. no matter where

  752. you have been

  753. or are

  754. because we love you

  755. we love you deeply

  756. because Jesus

  757. loves you deeply.

  758. So all in all

  759. where does this leave us?

  760. I started by saying

  761. this parable

  762. is an offer

  763. and a call

  764. and so that's

  765. where we'll return.

  766. How is it an offer then?

  767. It's an offer

  768. to those who are lost

  769. right now

  770. wandering through life

  771. scared

  772. good news

  773. the shepherd's

  774. on his way

  775. and he's not

  776. taking a break

  777. until he gets to you.

  778. Right?

  779. We don't have the capacity

  780. to pursue God.

  781. We can't

  782. we can't do it

  783. on our own.

  784. We can't make the choice

  785. to chase after him.

  786. He has to make the choice

  787. to pursue us

  788. and thank God

  789. he did.

  790. But you see

  791. in this pursuit

  792. in this finding

  793. there is a little bit

  794. that we have

  795. a role we have

  796. to play in this

  797. and that role

  798. we can find

  799. in verse 7

  800. it says

  801. just so

  802. I tell you

  803. there will be

  804. more joy in heaven

  805. over one sinner

  806. who repents

  807. than over 99

  808. righteous persons

  809. who need no repentance.

  810. So what's our role

  811. in this

  812. what's our role

  813. in this pursuit

  814. and in this rescue?

  815. It's that of repentance.

  816. What does repentance

  817. look like?

  818. Jesus tells us

  819. that too

  820. in the parable.

  821. He says

  822. it's letting yourself

  823. be carried

  824. by the shepherd.

  825. He says

  826. it's owning

  827. your lostness

  828. by accepting

  829. that carry

  830. and by allowing

  831. Jesus to put you

  832. on his shoulders

  833. and take us

  834. back into

  835. the Father's

  836. loving arms.

  837. That is repentance

  838. allowing God

  839. to give you grace.

  840. let me ask you this

  841. where in your lives

  842. do you need

  843. repentance today?

  844. For me

  845. it's happened

  846. incredibly intensely

  847. the last month

  848. month and a half.

  849. I told you

  850. I grew up in Iowa

  851. Iowa's slow

  852. and I love it

  853. for that.

  854. I moved to Jamaica

  855. Jamaica's slower.

  856. I love it even more

  857. for that.

  858. And then I moved

  859. to D.C.

  860. And the word

  861. slow doesn't exist

  862. in the vocabulary

  863. of the District

  864. of Columbia.

  865. You see

  866. what had happened

  867. to me

  868. is I had

  869. completely bought

  870. into the power

  871. of productivity.

  872. I had completely

  873. bought into the lie

  874. that the busier

  875. you are

  876. and the more

  877. you can get done

  878. the more accomplished

  879. your career

  880. and the better

  881. a person you are.

  882. And you see

  883. I felt pretty good

  884. because almost

  885. all of my time

  886. is spent in the church

  887. in some capacity.

  888. But the deception

  889. in that

  890. is the power

  891. of productivity

  892. doesn't escape

  893. the church either

  894. and it doesn't

  895. escape Christians.

  896. You see

  897. what God called me

  898. to painfully

  899. and it's still painful

  900. but I'm in his arms

  901. now

  902. is to rediscover

  903. Sabbath

  904. and to orient

  905. my life around

  906. Sabbath

  907. and resting

  908. in his arms

  909. to be willing

  910. to stop

  911. and say

  912. God you are enough

  913. and he's driven

  914. me to that.

  915. So think about

  916. where God

  917. is calling you

  918. to rest

  919. in his arms

  920. today

  921. because

  922. I tell you what

  923. there's nothing

  924. better in the world

  925. there's no greater

  926. comfort or joy

  927. than resting

  928. in the Father's arms

  929. completely

  930. and totally.

  931. And secondly

  932. and lastly

  933. then it's a call.

  934. If it's an offer

  935. for those

  936. who are searching

  937. those who are lost

  938. those who are hopeless

  939. it's a call

  940. to the church.

  941. It's a call

  942. to Christ's body.

  943. The New Testament

  944. calls us

  945. Christ's body

  946. for a reason

  947. because we're to

  948. emulate the heart

  949. of the shepherd.

  950. It's a call

  951. one because

  952. the shepherd

  953. has rescued us

  954. from our lostness.

  955. I could speak

  956. on this for hours

  957. but I think

  958. it's better

  959. to go to the source

  960. one of the most

  961. brilliant sources

  962. that you'll ever read

  963. St. Paul

  964. and in 1st Timothy

  965. he says this

  966. Christ Jesus

  967. came into the world

  968. to save sinners

  969. of whom I am

  970. the worst.

  971. Church

  972. never forget

  973. that we were all

  974. lost

  975. before we were found.

  976. Know from

  977. know where you came from

  978. to know where you're going

  979. right

  980. where you're going

  981. in Christ Jesus.

  982. Two

  983. make your lives

  984. missional and outward.

  985. That's the call.

  986. It's a risky business

  987. being a Christian.

  988. It's never been promised

  989. to be easy.

  990. Right?

  991. We can look all over

  992. the world today

  993. and see the terrible things

  994. that are happening

  995. to our brothers and sisters

  996. across the world.

  997. We can look back

  998. in history

  999. and see equally

  1000. as terrifying

  1001. and terrible of things.

  1002. But there's also

  1003. terrifying and terrible

  1004. things happening

  1005. in our culture

  1006. and they're even

  1007. harder sometimes

  1008. to deal with

  1009. because they're masked.

  1010. They're masked.

  1011. They're not blatant.

1012. So you need to make

  1013. your lives

  1014. missional and outward.

1015. We all need to do that.

  1016. Christ makes this claim

  1017. as he calls us

1018. to pick up our cross

  1019. daily

  1020. and follow him.

  1021. Whether that's

  1022. through offering yourself

  1023. to DC 127

  1024. in some capacity.

  1025. Whether that's

  1026. to your co-workers

  1027. being a selfless worker.

  1028. or to your neighbors

  1029. in your community

  1030. through your core group

  1031. in your household.

  1032. The call is this

  1033. to be a place

1034. and a people of rest

  1035. for a tired,

  1036. lost,

  1037. and lonely world.

  1038. And because

  1039. he is so brilliant

  1040. let's use

  1041. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

1042. to close this out tonight

  1043. with a quote

1044. from The Cost of Discipleship.

  1045. Costly grace

  1046. is the gospel

  1047. which must be sought

1048. again and again and again.

  1049. The gift

1050. which must be asked for.

  1051. The door

  1052. at which a man

  1053. must knock.

  1054. Such grace

  1055. is costly

  1056. because it calls us

  1057. to follow.

  1058. And it is grace

  1059. because it calls us

  1060. to follow Jesus Christ.

  1061. It is costly

  1062. because it costs

  1063. a man his life.

  1064. And it is grace

1065. because it gives a man

  1066. the only true life.

  1067. It is costly

  1068. because it condemns sin.

  1069. And grace

  1070. because it justifies

  1071. the sinner.

  1072. Above all

  1073. it is costly

  1074. because it cost God

1075. the life of his son.

  1076. Ye were bought

  1077. at a price

1078. and what has cost God much

1079. cannot be cheap for us.

  1080. Above all

  1081. it is grace

  1082. because God

1083. did not reckon his son

  1084. too dear a price

1085. to pay for our life

1086. but delivered him up for us.

  1087. Costly grace

1088. is the incarnation of God.

  1089. Let's pray.

  1090. Heavenly Father God

  1091. grace is costly

  1092. and it's beautiful.

  1093. No greater joy

  1094. no deeper hope

  1095. can be found

  1096. than in your salvation

  1097. than in the shepherd's

  1098. loving arms

  1099. setting at the seat

  1100. and the feet

  1101. of the Father.

  1102. God I ask

  1103. for all of us

  1104. in this room

  1105. and those who aren't

  1106. here tonight

  1107. that we can receive

  1108. both the offer

  1109. and the call

  1110. of you

  1111. the good shepherd

  1112. our Lord Jesus Christ

  1113. and ask

  1114. that our response

  1115. can be one

  1116. of repentance

  1117. and joy.

1118. In your name we pray.

  1119. Amen.

  1120. Amen.

  1121. Amen.

  1122. Amen.

  1123. Amen.

  1124. Amen.

  1125. Amen.

  1126. Amen.

  1127. Amen.

  1128. Amen.

  1129. Amen.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Amen.

  1132. Amen.

  1133. Amen.

  1134. Amen.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Amen.

  1137. Amen.

  1138. Amen.
