  1. Well, my thanks to Tommy for his welcome and his invitation in the first place to come and join with you this evening service.

  2. I will do my best to speak clearly in this foreign language that you can hear, which is British English instead of your kind.

  3. Especially, I think, as some of you have been listening to lots of the word being preached over this weekend already.

  4. But it's a great privilege to me to come and be here with you this evening.

  5. And to turn your attention back to part of the Old Testament reading that we heard a little while ago.

  6. I'll tell you what it is in due course.

  7. But you may have noticed from your order of service that the subject is preach on me.

  8. It doesn't actually mean preach on me, and that means me.

  9. It has to do, though, with the Old Testament reading, which was familiar to me from a fairly recent experience.

  10. Because this time last week, I was in Pittsburgh, and I was preaching there also in a church.

  11. That was the Church of the Incarnation.

  12. Which, like the Church of the Advent here, is in league, I understand, with the Anglican Church in North America.

  13. And I guess with good reason.

  14. Some of you know the ins and outs of church politics that lie behind that.

  15. But it's a great privilege, as I say, to be with another congregation of the same kind.

  16. They use a lectionary, a list of Bible readings, just as you do here.

  17. And one has this experience sometimes, if one is a preacher of the Word of God.

  18. You turn to a part of the Bible which may be familiar or unfamiliar, and something jumps out at you.

  19. A text is right there in front of you, and it says,

  20. Preach on me!

  21. Numbers 11, I thought.

  22. What's there in Numbers 11?

  23. There it was, if you've got your Bibles open still.

  24. Numbers chapter 11.

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  25. Preach on me, it said, and it was Numbers 11, verses 4 and 5.

    Numbers 11:4

  26. Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving,

  27. and the people of Israel also wept again and said,

  28. Oh, that we had meat to eat.

  29. We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing,

  30. and the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic.

  31. But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manner to look at.

  32. What on earth caught my attention about those verses?

  33. Well, that was the reason for the verses.

  34. Well, that was the reason for the verses.

  35. And to explain that, I have to go back in a little bit of personal history.

  36. My father was employed for 40 years by a mission agency as a missionary,

  37. but not a missionary in another country than England.

  38. He was a missionary in London, and he worked with the London City Mission.

  39. His job was on every weekday of the week to go out in one or other of the blue-collar areas of South London with the gospel,

  40. going from door to door with the Bible in his hand and the gospel in his heart.

  41. And on Sundays, he also had the care of a little church in South London, and there he would preach.

  42. And as I look back over his ministry, I've come to the conclusion that he was a very good evangelist and a very good preacher.

  43. That's to say that he had a very good God who gave him those gifts, and he taught him how to use them.

  44. An evangelist, but also a preacher.

  45. And sometimes in much more recent years, because I've been a preacher myself for quite a while now,

  46. I have sometimes found myself arriving at a church where my father preached many years before me.

  47. And quite often, an older person in the congregation has come up to me and said,

  48. We knew your father.

  49. He preached in this church.

  50. And we still remember what he preached on.

  51. I said, Oh, yes.

  52. We remember the onions.

  53. We remember the onions.

  54. That's right, it's a verse in the book of Numbers.

  55. We just heard it.

  56. We remember the onions.

  57. Well, they remember the onions.

  58. Well, they remember the sermon, which was more than I did, because I never heard it.

  59. But although I've got some of Dad's sermons still around the place, and I still think they're pretty good.

  60. This one I never located.

  61. But what would it have been?

  62. We remember the onions.

  63. That's why I chose the title, Preach on Me, because it was a verse that leapt off the page, demanding it to be preached on.

  64. And that's why I chose that verse.

  65. Because Dad had preached it, and it stuck in somebody's mind that way.

  66. Well, I don't know what he would have said.

  67. As I say, I never heard it.

  68. But I do believe that I know what he wants me to say to you about it.

  69. That it's a word for all of us in this particular place at this particular time.

  70. And I want to turn your attention back there to Numbers chapter 11.

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  71. And I want to take a verse out of that chapter and link it with a verse in the next book of the Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy.

  72. And draw your attention to the fact that in each of these two verses, you're going to hear something about a forward march.

  73. And something about a backward look.

  74. First of all then, Numbers 11, verse 5.

    Numbers 11:5

  75. If you have the Bible open in front of you, you may like to look at it.

  76. The people of Israel wept again and said,

  77. Oh, that we had meat to eat.

  78. We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt that cost nothing,

  79. and the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks.

  80. We remember the onions.

  81. And we remember the garlic.

  82. What was the forward march?

  83. The great interest of this particular chapter is that it's part of the long, ongoing story of the life of the people of God,

  84. as God calls them to come from where they've been for a long time,

  85. into a journey, and at the end of the journey, a new land, which he has prepared for them.

  86. And that's a story that will take up quite a chunk of the Old Testament.

  87. It's the forward march of God's people at this early stage of their history as a company of those who believe,

  88. or who at any rate say that they believe, in him.

  89. I guess a number of you will know the writings of Eugene Peterson,

  90. who was for many years, I understand, a pastor of a church not all that far from here,

  91. and whose works many of you may know and value.

  92. His translation of the entire Bible, which he calls The Message,

  93. has a very interesting introduction to each book of the Bible,

  94. and in his introduction to the book of Numbers, he speaks like this.

  95. He says, here is a company of believers,

  96. quite near the beginning of its journey,

  97. and they are gradually learning to look to God for,

  98. this is the theme he draws out of Numbers,

  99. they are learning to look to God for

  100. organizational help,

  101. and for relational help.

  102. They need organizational help,

  103. so that they learn how to work together.

  104. They need relational help,

  105. so as to learn how to live together.

  106. And the greater part of the book is taken up,

  107. with God's people being taught those two great truths,

  108. to learn from the Lord.

  109. And on the story goes,

  110. it's a very exciting story,

  111. a very romantic one,

  112. but what Eugene Peterson says about this particular part of it,

  113. it says, well, exciting and romantic it may be,

  114. but it's important to grasp,

  115. I quote,

  116. some of these less than romantic details

  117. by which we are formed into the people of God.

  118. In other words, this is about the nitty-gritty

  119. of learning to belong to the people of God.

  120. It's not always easy.

  121. It's not always lovely.

  122. Some of it is hard graft.

  123. But that's the forward march,

  124. and that's something they have to begin to learn at that stage,

  125. and then go on learning all the time they are journeying

  126. on the way to the promised land,

  127. and indeed once they get there,

  128. as they continue to be the people of God,

  129. and eventually become the Church of Jesus Christ.

  130. And here is this nitty-gritty stuff

  131. as they march forward

  132. into the future that God has prepared for them.

  133. Lessons that are going to hold good

  134. for the rest of their march through history.

  135. So that out of this one verse in Numbers

  136. has to do with the forward march.

  137. It's all part of the forward march.

  138. We belong to the people of God.

  139. We step forward together.

  140. We have to learn to walk together

  141. as we move towards his goal.

  142. Along with that,

  143. what you find here in Numbers 11, verse 5,

    Numbers 11:5

  144. is the backward look.

  145. Here's the forward march.

  146. Hope you're all moving forward together.

  147. Says Moses, follow me.

  148. This is the way we're going.

  149. And then he hears about this backward look.

  150. This is where we arrive at our text.

  151. The people of Israel wept again and said,

  152. Oh, that we had meat to eat.

  153. We remember the fish we had in Egypt.

  154. It cost nothing.

  155. The cucumbers, the melons, the leeks,

  156. the onions, and the garlic.

  157. But now our strength is dried up.

  158. Nothing at all but this manner.

  159. The backward look.

  160. We remember the old days.

  161. As things are just at the moment,

  162. they say,

  163. God or no God.

  164. Journey towards something better or not.

  165. All we've got to eat day by day

  166. is this manner.

  167. We're sick and tired of it.

  168. We remember the onions.

  169. We remember the good old days

  170. before we embark on this dreadful journey.

  171. Well, when the day is demanding

  172. and the way is difficult

  173. and, well, demanding, difficult,

  174. you might say just plain dull.

  175. Many of those days traveling through the wilderness

  176. must have been very dull days.

  177. And food becomes

  178. a matter of great concern to them.

  179. A focus of

  180. all their attention.

  181. And the backward look

  182. as they're moving, we hope,

  183. on the way forward

  184. that God has planned for them,

  185. the backward look is for some of the good things

  186. that they seem to have left behind.

  187. And God has said,

  188. you had to leave them behind.

  189. You're not going to find

  190. onions in the wilderness.

  191. You're not going to find

  192. any of the goodies of Egypt

  193. on the way that I am taking you.

  194. And that's when

  195. the manner for all it

  196. had kept them going for so long

  197. and would continue to do so for 40 years.

  198. And it was good to eat.

  199. But all the onions.

  200. And how selective was their memory.

  201. How extraordinary

  202. that as they look back

  203. to those early days

  204. in that land of slavery,

  205. the one thing they isolated

  206. as a memory they cherished

  207. was the onions of Egypt.

  208. Is that all you remember about Egypt?

  209. The onions and the melons

  210. and the garlic and all?

  211. Come on.

  212. You were there for 400 years

  213. and you know

  214. the conditions you suffered under.

  215. They got worse

  216. and worse

  217. and worse.

  218. And the day you came out of Egypt,

  219. you yourselves were celebrating

  220. your deliverance.

  221. and here you are

  222. and all you can think about

  223. is the onions

  224. you left behind.

  225. The forward march

  226. of the people of God

  227. which continues

  228. through the whole

  229. of the Old Testament

  230. and on into the New

  231. and is still the journey

  232. that lies before us.

  233. That's what we're

  234. looking forward to.

  235. The Lord taking us on

  236. whichever way

  237. he intends to lead us.

  238. It'll be the right way

  239. and the best way

  240. and the straightest way

  241. though it may sometimes

  242. not seem so

  243. the straightest way

  244. home to heaven.

  245. But the backward look

  246. always still occasionally

  247. hanker

  248. for the onions.

  249. Now it seems to me

  250. that that's

  251. not unrelated

  252. to where many churches

  253. in America are

  254. at the present time.

  255. I'm not quite sure

  256. if we in Britain

  257. are quite in the same position

  258. but

  259. there are sorts of things

  260. that we move forward

  261. towards

  262. and other things

  263. that we seem to be

  264. leaving behind

  265. and there are difficult

  266. decisions

  267. to be made.

  268. How are the people of God

  269. going to follow

  270. in his way

  271. especially

  272. when we're in this

  273. very curious

  274. and anomalous position

  275. which is not quite

  276. like where I come from

  277. of the Anglican church

  278. in North America.

  279. I imagine

  280. that most of you

  281. will know something

  282. about the politics

  283. of the church

  284. that lie behind all this.

  285. And it seems

  286. to you

  287. as it certainly

  288. seems to me

  289. looking on

  290. as an outsider

  291. that there are

  292. certain things

  293. that you are going

  294. to be glad

  295. to be rid of

  296. in the Anglican church

  297. you grew up in.

  298. That is still so

  299. in Britain.

  300. It's just that we

  301. haven't yet reached

  302. the parting of the ways

  303. and we hope

  304. there may be

  305. no parting of the ways.

  306. But as you reach

  307. that point

  308. it's all very much

  309. a matter of

  310. the forward march

  311. which way are we going

  312. and what lies ahead

  313. and the backward look

  314. as to what we're going

  315. to have to leave

  316. behind us.

  317. all these are

  318. difficult decisions

  319. to be made

  320. and things

  321. to be weighed up.

  322. And I want to take you

  323. on to the other verse

  324. I've got

  325. the other one

  326. of these two

  327. the first is there

  328. in Numbers chapter 11

    Numbers 11:5

  329. verse 5

  330. and the other one

  331. is in the very next

  332. book of the Bible

  333. in Deuteronomy

  334. this time it's chapter 8.

  335. Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  336. and again

  337. it's

  338. a verse which

  339. says something about

  340. the forward march

  341. and something about

  342. the backward look.

  343. But I'll be wanting you

  344. to notice the difference

  345. between the forward march

  346. in Numbers 11

  347. embarking on that great

  348. spirit led journey

  349. into the new life

  350. and the forward march

  351. here in Deuteronomy

  352. and similarly

  353. the contrast

  354. between the backward

  355. look of the folk

  356. who couldn't forget

  357. the onions

  358. and the backward

  359. look of the people

  360. in Deuteronomy.

  361. Let's have a look now

  362. if you've got a Bible

  363. open in front of you

  364. it's Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  365. chapter 8

  366. and the beginning

  367. of the chapter.

  368. I'll start at verse 1

  369. the whole commandment

  370. that I command you

  371. today

  372. you shall be careful

  373. to do

  374. that you may live

  375. and multiply

  376. and go in

  377. and possess the land

  378. that the Lord swore

  379. to give to your fathers

  380. and you shall remember

  381. the whole way

  382. that the Lord your God

  383. has led you

  384. these 40 years

  385. in the wilderness.

  386. the forward march

  387. well

  388. we're looking at it now

  389. from God's viewpoint

  390. the pattern

  391. of the whole story

  392. of that forward march

  393. it's the story

  394. of the church of God

  395. in the Old Testament

  396. and of the church of God

  397. in our New Testament days

  398. and the Lord is saying here

  399. at the beginning

  400. of Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  401. chapter 8

  402. the Lord was leading you

  403. for these 40 years

  404. in the wilderness

  405. in order to humble you

  406. to test you

  407. to know what was

  408. in your heart

  409. whether you would keep

  410. his commandments

  411. or no

  412. and he humbled you

  413. and let you hunger

  414. and fed you with manna

  415. which you didn't know

  416. nor did your fathers know

  417. so that he might make you know

  418. that man does not live

  419. by bread alone

  420. but by every word

  421. that comes

  422. from the mouth of God

  423. so what's the forward march

  424. in the eyes of Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  425. chapter 8

  426. from God's viewpoint

  427. it's his plan

  428. for that onward march

  429. and it's the fact

  430. that he has it all organized

  431. in advance

  432. and every step of the way

  433. including

  434. that mere 40 years

  435. in the wilderness

  436. with nothing to eat

  437. but manna that came from heaven

  438. and brothers and sisters

  439. no onions

  440. and all that

  441. they had to do with

  442. why

  443. you see

  444. what they were focused on

  445. was something

  446. that they missed

  447. and couldn't see

  448. why they should be

  449. deprived of it

  450. wasn't it cruel of God

  451. to take them on

  452. the terrible journey

  453. without any onions

  454. and he says

  455. don't you realize

  456. that the entire

  457. it's going to be 40 years

  458. the entire 40 years

  459. is part of my plan

  460. every detail of it

  461. is there

  462. I fed you with manna

  463. for 40 years

  464. to teach you

  465. that man does not live

  466. by bread alone

  467. but by every word

  468. that proceeds

  469. from the mouth of God

  470. there was a purpose

  471. in that setup

  472. it was on purpose

  473. that I gave you

  474. manna

  475. and not onions

  476. you had that

  477. narrow backward look

  478. to one particular thing

  479. that you really

  480. it was about the only thing

  481. you did like about Egypt

  482. wasn't it

  483. if you're honest

  484. you seem to forget

  485. that the whole thing

  486. that was there

  487. was part of slavery

  488. and I brought you out of that

  489. and everything

  490. that happens to you

  491. from this point on

  492. including the lack

  493. of the onions

  494. is designed to teach you

  495. they had that

  496. very narrow view

  497. of what had been

  498. going on hitherto

  499. and God has this

  500. extraordinary

  501. all embracing

  502. panoramic view

  503. of where he's

  504. leading them to

  505. and every detail in it

  506. is to be for their blessing

  507. as well as for his glory

  508. that was the forward march

  509. as Deuteronomy

  510. describes it

  511. from God's viewpoint

  512. it's all for your benefit

  513. in the long run

  514. why did he treat you

  515. like this

  516. so that he might

  517. humble you

  518. and test you

  519. and know

  520. what was in your heart

  521. there was a purpose

  522. all the way through

  523. and what should be

  524. your backward look

  525. is something

  526. well

  527. much bigger

  528. than the onions

  529. what I want you to realize

  530. he says

  531. is not just

  532. focusing on

  533. certain things

  534. you've had to give up

  535. in order to follow me

  536. but what I was

  537. actually doing

  538. when I brought you

  539. out of Egypt

  540. what I was doing

  541. was bringing you out

  542. of a place

  543. to which I had

  544. taken you

  545. in the first place

  546. and even your being

  547. there was part

  548. of my design

  549. I want you to learn

  550. the enormity

  551. and the extraordinary

  552. detail

  553. of my plans

  554. for my people

  555. please do not focus

  556. on the minutiae

  557. on the tiny things

  558. on the particulars

  559. which is about

  560. all you can remember

  561. that you did enjoy

  562. in Egypt

  563. how they've grown

  564. how they've been

  565. magnified in your memory

  566. come on

  567. get it in proportion

  568. they were only onions

  569. for heaven's sake

  570. and what I have

  571. in store for you

  572. is a land

  573. flowing with milk

  574. and honey

  575. out of whose hills

  576. you may dig brass

  577. and we'll never want

  578. for anything

  579. come on my children

  580. he says

  581. what I want you

  582. to have

  583. is a true view

  584. of what you've

  585. left behind

  586. and a true view

  587. of what you're

  588. going towards

  589. move please

  590. move please

  591. out of Numbers

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  592. chapter 11

  593. into Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  594. chapter 8

  595. and I think

  596. that the present

  597. turmoils

  598. in Anglican churches

  599. worldwide

  600. which are

  601. quite extraordinarily

  602. interesting

  603. and one of the

  604. interesting things

  605. about them

  606. if I may say this

  607. in brackets

  608. is that

  609. I find churches

  610. here are looking

  611. to

  612. Anglican archbishops

  613. in sundry places

  614. on the face

  615. of the globe

  616. and they include

  617. and have included

  618. over recent years

  619. as my memory

  620. goes back a few years

  621. not just to

  622. archbishops

  623. in Rwanda

  624. and Burundi

  625. and Uganda

  626. or even to

  627. the Archbishop

  628. of Nigeria

  629. which has more

  630. Anglican Christians

  631. than the whole

  632. of Britain has

  633. and Drexel

  634. of the West Indies

  635. Akinoli

  636. of Nigeria

  637. an old friend

  638. of mine

  639. who was

  640. Archbishop

  641. of the Southern

  642. Coney

  643. in South America

  644. and all these

  645. folk

  646. who've got the goods

  647. brothers and sisters

  648. they've got the goods

  649. which is more

  650. than I can say

  651. of some of our

  652. bishops in England

  653. but you see

  654. through all this

  655. denomination

  656. as well as in

  657. every other

  658. denomination

  659. that you have

  660. folk who've got

  661. their priorities

  662. right

  663. and when they

  664. look backwards

  665. they say

  666. now

  667. one or two

  668. things good

  669. but we're glad

  670. to leave those

  671. things behind us

  672. and God has

  673. opened up for us

  674. something really

  675. exciting and

  676. interesting

  677. in the years

  678. that lie ahead

  679. and we say

  680. yes

  681. and here in the

  682. United States

  683. it's come to a

  684. crunch

  685. am I right

  686. and the Anglican

  687. church is having

  688. to say

  689. well now

  690. do we stick

  691. with the people

  692. who've still

  693. got the vision

  694. or do we stick

  695. with the people

  696. who haven't

  697. it's not for me

  698. to answer that

  699. question

  700. but it hasn't

  701. come to us yet

  702. in Britain

  703. maybe it's on

  704. its way

  705. I think it's so

  706. interesting when the

  707. Archbishop of

  708. Canterbury is torn

  709. two ways

  710. and has two lots

  711. of bishops

  712. one on either

  713. side

  714. putting him in

  715. two different

  716. directions

  717. I find it so

  718. exciting to be

  719. here

  720. among your

  721. congregation

  722. at the Church

  723. of the Advent

  724. as at the Church

  725. of the Incarnation

  726. down there in

  727. Pittsburgh

  728. last Sunday

  729. to see that

  730. out of a mess

  731. God is saying

  732. come on my

  733. people

  734. leave the

  735. melons

  736. the onions

  737. the garlic

  738. and all that

  739. stuff

  740. they were just

  741. the condiments

  742. I've got something

  743. much nicer for you

  744. that lies ahead

  745. and follow me

  746. through the wilderness

  747. 40 years of it

  748. maybe

  749. but you'll see

  750. it's worth it

  751. in the long run

  752. let's pray together

  753. our gracious

  754. father we do

  755. thank you

  756. for the

  757. onward call

  758. to your

  759. people

  760. always at

  761. every stage

  762. of their

  763. history

  764. to be able

  765. to leave

  766. behind the

  767. things that

  768. need leaving

  769. behind

  770. and to

  771. follow through

  772. forwards to

  773. those things

  774. that need to

  775. be reached

  776. out to

  777. teach us a

  778. sense of

  779. proportion

  780. we pray

  781. that the

  782. things that

  783. don't really

  784. matter

  785. and the

  786. things we

  787. can afford

  788. to leave

  789. behind

  790. are left

  791. behind

  792. the things

  793. that do

  794. really matter

  795. the things

  796. that we

  797. need to

  798. reach forward

  799. to

  800. are the

  801. things that

  802. we do

  803. reach forward

  804. to

  805. we ask

  806. all this

  807. in Jesus

  808. name

  809. amen
