  1. I am not mad at you.

  2. You probably knew that.

  3. But I find myself having to say that a lot.

  4. I hadn't planned on saying this.

  5. It's because I wrestle with something called BRF syndrome.

  6. I don't know if you know what that is.

  7. You can look it up later.

  8. It has something to do with my resting face.

  9. Also, at times I can get pretty dour and sarcastic.

  10. And that's a fault of mine.

  11. It's a sin, really.

  12. And the core group leaders experienced this a couple months ago.

  13. Somebody asked me after a meeting with the core group leaders,

  14. were you angry or sad or what?

  15. I'm like, no, it was great.

  16. It was fine.

  17. But core group leaders, I apologize to you.

  18. You need more than just that.

  19. You need my encouragement.

  20. I really love you guys and all you do.

  21. But I'm not mad at you either.

  22. Has anybody ever said, I'm not mad at you,

  23. and that came as a big relief?

  24. I think that's true for most of us, right?

  25. Especially when they say, I'm not mad at you anymore.

  26. I remember very distinctly a friend of mine saying that to me.

  27. I was leading rehearsal.

  28. This was about 12 years ago.

  29. And I snapped at him.

  30. And I didn't apologize afterwards.

  31. And then I just let it go.

  32. And it completely crushed him.

  33. And over time, he removed himself from me and contacted with me.

  34. And I gradually noticed it.

  35. But by the time I really realized it, it felt like it was too late.

  36. And I was really embarrassed by it.

  37. And afraid, actually.

  38. And I just hoped the whole thing would resolve itself on its own.

  39. But surprise, it did not.

  40. It remained bad.

  41. And it got worse.

  42. And I finally had to humble myself.

  43. And I went to his house.

  44. And I asked for his forgiveness.

  45. And he explained how he had been hurt.

  46. And he was right and was justified.

  47. But then he said, Dan, I forgive you.

  48. Completely.

  49. It's as if it never happened.

  50. And it made me want to tell others about it, too.

  51. I went and told my wife.

  52. I told my friends.

  53. Like, look at this guy.

  54. He just forgave me for this.

  55. Just like that.

  56. It was amazing.

  57. And now I'm telling you about it.

  58. Now, what if the person mad at you was not your friend, but somebody in a position of power or influence?

  59. An elected official, a judge, the president, the king.

  60. Or how about the creator of the universe?

  61. What if it was God that was mad at you?

  62. This is the position that the nation of Judah finds itself in, in Isaiah chapter 12.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  63. It's the first text that we read tonight.

  64. The nation of Judah is going to learn that God's not angry anymore.

  65. And we're going to see that the removal of that wrath, or as theologians put it, the expiation of that wrath, brings four things.

  66. It brings repentance.

  67. It brings trust.

  68. It brings joy.

  69. And it brings mission.

  70. But you know where we're going, right?

  71. I mean, ultimately, we're not talking about Judah.

  72. We're talking about us.

  73. I'm talking about you.

  74. Some of you have walked into this room tonight not quite sure of what God thinks of you.

  75. Some of you, when you walked into the room, think that God is angry with you.

  76. Or he's displeased.

  77. Or that he has a frown on his face.

  78. Or maybe he was okay when you walked in, but who knows what he'll be like tomorrow, the next time you screw up.

  79. Some of you know how you screw up over and over, and you wonder, really, how can God love a person like me?

  80. Now, how do I know this about you or us?

  81. And it's because half the people that come into my office, half the people that I counsel, wrestle with this specific point.

  82. They're unsure about this point, that God loves them and likes them.

  83. And is completely pleased with them.

  84. This is not a rebuke for them or for you.

  85. This is going to be an invitation to receive the affection that God is already lavishing on you.

  86. Now, some of you feel pretty confident that God likes you, but for some reason that doesn't make much of a difference.

  87. Like, you wonder, where's the joy that I used to experience?

  88. Or the confidence I used to know?

  89. Friends, I'm here to tell you that if you're in Christ, God loves you.

  90. He likes you.

  91. He's crazy about you.

  92. He really wants you to know that.

  93. So let's pray and ask him for help, okay?

  94. God, give us the power, together with all your holy people,

  95. to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is your love.

  96. For our good and for your glory.

  97. Amen.

  98. So let's take first a look at where we are in the Bible.

  99. We're in the book of Isaiah.

  100. The prophet Isaiah lived and worked in the nation of Judah during the 8th and 7th centuries BC.

  101. He began working during the reign of Ahaz.

  102. Ahaz was a pretty despicable king.

  103. And he led his people into some detestable practices.

  104. He shuttered up the temple.

  105. He set up altars all over the country to worship other gods, pagan gods.

  106. He even performed child sacrifices.

  107. He burned his own sons to pagan gods as an offering.

  108. During his reign, Judah was attacked on all sides.

  109. And instead of going to God for help,

  110. he pledged allegiance to Judah's biggest enemy,

  111. the kingdom of Assyria.

  112. And so God, through the prophet, speaks judgment on Ahaz and the kingdom of Judah.

  113. Now this is chapter 6 through 12 that I'm talking about.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  114. Now, as bad as it is,

  115. because God is compassionate and he's merciful,

  116. God continually promises restoration and hope in the midst of all these judgments.

  117. And if you've been attending church for several years,

  118. you may remember some of those promises.

  119. We hear them during the season of Advent every year.

  120. This promise is centered on a future king,

  121. one who would be called a wonderful counselor,

  122. mighty God,

  123. everlasting father,

  124. prince of peace.

  125. The promises also describe a profound future peace that the king brings,

  126. a peace which you also hear about during Advent,

  127. when the wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

  128. and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

  129. and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together,

  130. and the little child shall lead them.

  131. Does that sound familiar?

  132. That's Isaiah 11.

  133. So after pronouncements of judgment and deliverance,

  134. judgment and deliverance,

  135. we arrive at chapter 12.

  136. And verse 1 says,

  137. you will say in that day,

  138. and here the word you is singular.

  139. So we often hear and read in the Bible

  140. ourselves being addressed as you.

  141. Usually it's in you plural, right?

  142. God or the writers of Scripture are addressing you as a church.

  143. But here's you singular.

  144. So you are as free to be as individualistic with this verse as you'd like.

  145. You will say on that day,

  146. I will give thanks to you, O Lord,

  147. for though you were angry with me,

  148. your anger turned away that you might comfort me.

  149. So where does that anger come from?

  150. Well, it comes in a very different place.

  151. It comes from a very different place

  152. than, say, human anger would come.

  153. See, when Isaiah is writing and speaking,

  154. he's very concerned about the holiness of God.

  155. He uses a title for God,

  156. the Holy One of Israel,

  157. 25 times.

  158. In the rest of the whole Old Testament,

  159. you only find that seven times.

  160. And in the beginning of this section,

  161. in chapter 6,

  162. Isaiah describes a vision he had

  163. of God,

  164. a king seated on a throne,

  165. surrounded by

  166. burning angels,

  167. seraphim and cheraphim.

  168. And they're crying out,

  169. Holy, holy, holy

  170. is the Lord of hosts.

  171. Heaven and earth are full of his glory.

  172. God is so holy

  173. that Isaiah can't even describe him.

  174. All he can describe

  175. is the hem of his robe.

  176. And this is because holiness

  177. means profoundly pure,

  178. profoundly separate,

  179. other.

  180. This holiness

  181. constitutes an awesome threat

  182. to an unworthy,

  183. careless,

  184. rejecting,

  185. and unresponsive people.

  186. How does one

  187. assuage

  188. anger like that?

  189. One doesn't.

  190. One doesn't.

  191. It's the choice of God

  192. to forgive

  193. and to comfort.

  194. The rest of the book of Isaiah

  195. fleshes that out.

  196. But this God

  197. goes to great lengths

  198. to deal with sin,

  199. to reclaim the sinner,

  200. to create a righteous people

  201. for himself.

  202. How does he do this?

  203. Well, I think we need

  204. to trace through Scripture

  205. how God

  206. deals with sin.

  207. Okay?

  208. We go to the book of Leviticus,

    Leviticus 17 chapter mention

  209. chapter 17,

  210. and it says,

  211. For the life of a creature

  212. is in the blood.

  213. And God says,

  214. I have given it to you

  215. to make atonement

  216. for yourselves

  217. on the altar.

  218. It is the blood

  219. that makes atonement

  220. for one's life.

  221. The New Testament

  222. agrees with this.

  223. In Hebrews,

    Hebrews 9:22

  224. chapter 9,

  225. verse 22,

  226. which says,

  227. Indeed,

  228. under the law,

  229. almost everything

  230. is purified with blood.

  231. Without the shedding of blood,

  232. there is no forgiveness

  233. of sins.

  234. So a question

  235. to ask might be,

  236. well,

  237. if that's true,

  238. then how many sacrifices

  239. must be made?

  240. I mean,

  241. must I keep offering sacrifices

  242. for every little sin

  243. that I do?

  244. And that's a great question.

  245. And one of the prophets

  246. actually asks

  247. that question himself.

  248. The prophet Micah,

  249. he asks this,

  250. with what shall I come

  251. before the Lord

  252. and bow myself

  253. before God on high?

  254. Shall I come before him

  255. with burnt offerings,

  256. with calves a year old?

  257. Will the Lord be pleased

  258. with thousands of rams,

  259. with ten thousands

  260. of rivers of oil?

  261. Shall I give my firstborn

  262. for my transgression,

  263. the fruit of my body,

  264. for the sin of my soul?

  265. See, already that system

  266. doesn't seem to be

  267. making sense to him.

  268. Right.

  269. Because it's pointing

  270. towards something else.

  271. God goes to great lengths

  272. to solve this dilemma.

  273. He himself became

  274. the perfect sacrifice

  275. once for all

  276. through the death

  277. of his firstborn son,

  278. Jesus Christ.

  279. Hebrews chapter 10 says,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  280. but when Christ had offered

  281. for all time

  282. a single sacrifice for sins,

  283. he sat down

  284. at the right hand of God

  285. for by a single offering,

  286. he has perfected

  287. for all time

  288. those who are being sanctified.

  289. So it's done.

  290. Sin is faced once for all

  291. and then is cast

  292. by the grace of God

  293. into the depths of the sea.

  294. And now we are at one

  295. with Christ.

  296. we are now brought

  297. into union

  298. with God's own son.

  299. We share life with him.

  300. And when God sees us,

  301. he sees his son

  302. on whom since eternity past,

  303. he has lavished love,

  304. affection,

  305. praise,

  306. and intimacy.

  307. And now we get all of that.

  308. Who wouldn't want that?

  309. Who wouldn't want

  310. the love of a father?

  311. The affection of a father?

  312. The praise of a father?

  313. Intimacy with the father?

  314. As Charles Spurgeon said,

  315. God is so boundlessly pleased

  316. with Jesus

  317. that in him,

  318. God is altogether

  319. well pleased with us.

  320. A catechism is a method

  321. of teaching

  322. through question and answer.

  323. And there's one called

  324. the Heidelberg Catechism.

  325. It summarizes everything

  326. we've just talked about

  327. by asking,

  328. how are you right with God?

  329. You know,

  330. I put this in the slides.

  331. It's after all the scripture readings.

  332. Is it up there?

  333. Great.

  334. Let's answer this together.

  335. Church,

  336. how are you right with God?

  337. Only by true faith

  338. in Jesus Christ,

  339. even though my conscience

  340. accuses me

  341. of having grievously sinned

  342. against all God's commandments

  343. and of never having kept

  344. any of them,

  345. and even though

  346. I am still inclined

  347. toward all evil,

  348. nevertheless,

  349. without my deserving it at all,

  350. out of sheer grace,

  351. God grants and credits

  352. to me

  353. the perfect satisfaction,

  354. righteousness,

  355. and holiness of Christ

  356. as if I had never sinned

  357. nor been a sinner,

  358. as if I had been

  359. as perfectly obedient

  360. as Christ was obedient for me.

  361. All I need to do

  362. is to accept this gift of God

  363. with a believing heart.

  364. That's it.

  365. That's all.

  366. Believe.

  367. Friends, believe.

  368. It makes the world of difference.

  369. Believe.

  370. Your Father loves you.

  371. He's so crazy about you.

  372. He wants to pour affection.

  373. Just receive it.

  374. Just receive it.

  375. What happens when we accept this gift?

  376. What happens when we are made right with God?

  377. Well, a lot.

  378. But four things that we'll look at tonight.

  379. Four things that we find here

  380. in Isaiah chapter 12.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  381. The first is repentance.

  382. A regular turning away from sin.

  383. And this is very important.

  384. And it's not explicit here in the passage,

  385. but it's strongly implicit.

  386. Because this is how Old Testament prophecies work.

  387. Old Testament prophecies are usually judgment

  388. or they're,

  389. excuse me,

  390. they're judgment or they're blessing.

  391. They're, yes.

  392. Somebody help me out.

  393. Now, most of the time,

  394. there were contingencies on these

  395. judgments or promises.

  396. If God pronounced judgment on a nation

  397. and the nation repents,

  398. he would relent.

  399. If God declared that a nation would prosper,

  400. but the nation became wicked,

  401. he would relent of the good

  402. that he had intended for that nation.

  403. And so this is why,

  404. during the season of Advent,

  405. repentance is emphasized.

  406. We push repentance to a place of honor

  407. at the table

  408. in our worship together.

  409. Waiting for God's deliverance

  410. has always been accompanied by repentance.

  411. Here's the key for us as the church.

  412. If we are in Christ,

  413. we will repent.

  414. Because as Christians,

  415. being in Christ,

  416. it's in our DNA.

  417. He tells us he will give us his Holy Spirit,

  418. that he will write his law on our hearts.

  419. But when we are made right with God,

  420. we will live lives of repentance.

  421. So second,

  422. we learn to trust God alone.

  423. So first is repentance,

  424. second is trust.

  425. Verse two says,

  426. Behold, God is my salvation.

  427. I will trust

  428. and will not be afraid.

  429. For the Lord God is my strength and my song,

  430. and he's become my salvation.

  431. Now remember,

  432. when Judah ran into trouble,

  433. Judah sought help not from God,

  434. but from the kingdom of Assyria.

  435. It didn't work out for Judah.

  436. Judah would remain a puppet state

  437. of a greater power

  438. until the end of its existence.

  439. The consequences of trusting anyone

  440. or anything besides God

  441. are always disastrous.

  442. Yet we're always drawn to trust something besides God

  443. for comfort,

  444. for a meaning,

  445. for feeling alive.

  446. For us,

  447. those things tend to be power

  448. or money

  449. or order

  450. or achievement.

  451. For instance,

  452. not long before the film director,

  453. Sidney Pollack,

  454. died,

  455. there was an article written about

  456. his inability to slow down

  457. and enjoy his final years

  458. with his loved ones.

  459. Though he was unwell

  460. and the grueling process of filmmaking

  461. was wearing him down,

  462. he couldn't justify his existence

  463. if he stopped.

  464. He explained,

  465. every time I finish a picture,

  466. I feel like I've done something

  467. I'm supposed to do

  468. in the sense

  469. that I've earned my stay

  470. here on earth

  471. for yet another year.

  472. And then it would start all over again.

  473. Make a film,

  474. work hard,

  475. achieve,

  476. earn another year on earth

  477. until he died.

  478. Now I think a lot of us

  479. can relate to that, right?

  480. Some of us,

  481. we derive our sense of worth

  482. in feeling right about a cause.

  483. And you see that one

  484. all the time nowadays, right?

  485. It's not enough to have

  486. a certain value,

  487. but in a perverse way,

  488. we're comforted from being outraged

  489. when that value is transgressed.

  490. Feeling right makes us feel righteous.

  491. But for those on whom God

  492. has lavished his approval

  493. and affection,

  494. God's approval is enough.

  495. We don't have to feel right.

  496. We don't even have to be right.

  497. We don't have to chase

  498. something else for comfort,

  499. for meaning,

  500. for contentment.

  501. The third thing happens

  502. when we are made right with God

  503. is joy.

  504. Joy is the evidence

  505. of having been reconciled

  506. with our Holy Father.

  507. In verse 3,

  508. Isaiah writes,

  509. with joy you will draw water

  510. from the well's salvation.

  511. Now here he shifts

  512. to the second person plural.

  513. First it was singular,

  514. now it's plural.

  515. There's a joy that happens

  516. when we gather together

  517. as God's reconciled people

  518. and declare the stories

  519. of how God has rescued us

  520. and redeemed us.

  521. And you know this,

  522. especially if you were here

  523. two weeks ago

  524. and saw the baptisms, right?

  525. Who here either wept

  526. or almost wept

  527. when Ali was baptized

  528. two weeks ago, right?

  529. To see the water

  530. pour down from his head,

  531. down his face,

  532. and onto his

  533. very stylish shirt.

  534. Who didn't get the chills

  535. to hear Ali

  536. declared our brother

  537. and to see those babies

  538. marked as God's own children?

  539. There's a joy

  540. that's infectious

  541. when we gather together

  542. to declare the praises

  543. of the one who has saved us.

  544. This is why the writer

  545. of the Hebrews tells us,

  546. let us consider

  547. how to stir up one another

  548. to love and good works,

  549. not neglecting to meet together,

  550. as is the habit of some,

  551. but encouraging one another

  552. and all the more

  553. as you see the day drawing near.

  554. So repentance,

  555. trust,

  556. joy,

  557. and fourthly,

  558. that's a word, right?

  559. Fourthly,

  560. fourthly,

  561. mission.

  562. Come as a result

  563. of being made right with God.

  564. Verse four says,

  565. and you will say in that day,

  566. give thanks to the Lord,

  567. call upon his name,

  568. make known his deeds

  569. among the peoples,

  570. proclaim that his name

  571. is exalted,

  572. sing praises to the Lord,

  573. for he has done gloriously.

  574. Let this be made known

  575. in all the earth.

  576. Shout

  577. and sing for joy,

  578. O inhabitant of Zion,

  579. for great in your midst

  580. is the Holy One of Israel.

  581. experiencing the radical,

  582. extravagant love of Christ

  583. compels to share it

  584. with the world.

  585. We do this all the time,

  586. right,

  587. when we find things beautiful.

  588. A piece of music,

  589. a movie,

  590. a sunset,

  591. a poem,

  592. a vista,

  593. a book,

  594. an insane goal

  595. by Lionel Messi.

  596. We want to praise it

  597. and we want to share that

  598. with others,

  599. right?

  600. We experience this

  601. every week

  602. in our worship.

  603. God gathers us in.

  604. We declare his praises.

  605. He feeds us

  606. with his own word

  607. and his own self.

  608. And then he sends us out.

  609. What do we hear

  610. right before we leave?

  611. Let us,

  612. anybody know?

  613. Let us go forth

  614. into the,

  615. yes,

  616. let us go forth

  617. into the world,

  618. rejoicing in the power

  619. of the Holy Spirit.

  620. Thanks, Annika.

  621. How can we declare

  622. God's names

  623. to peoples of the earth?

  624. How can we make

  625. that proclamation global

  626. as Isaiah suggests?

  627. Well,

  628. for some of us

  629. it might mean

  630. going overseas,

  631. right?

  632. But I think

  633. for most of us

  634. it doesn't mean that.

  635. It doesn't mean

  636. we go overseas

  637. and share the gospel

  638. in a different language.

  639. but we can still

  640. support and strengthen

  641. national churches

  642. that are preaching

  643. the gospel.

  644. I think it's

  645. really important now

  646. more than ever.

  647. Personally,

  648. our family has a deep

  649. heart for Europe.

  650. We've long loved Europe

  651. and it used to be

  652. that the church

  653. focused a lot

  654. of its efforts

  655. on the Middle East

  656. and on Asia.

  657. But now people

  658. from those lands

  659. are moving to Europe.

  660. Now they're being forced

  661. to move to Europe.

  662. And the opportunity

  663. to preach the gospel

  664. to them is greater

  665. than it's ever

  666. been before.

  667. So another thing

  668. you can do

  669. and this is what

  670. my family did

  671. and this is

  672. we moved to

  673. Washington, D.C.

  674. You're already here

  675. and you can stay.

  676. You can stay in D.C.

  677. Stay here.

  678. Join a core group.

  679. Love the city

  680. long term.

  681. Work for its prosperity

  682. long term.

  683. The nations are here

  684. in Washington, D.C.

  685. The opportunities here

  686. are boundless.

  687. This is why we came.

  688. This is why we love D.C.

  689. And why we love to be

  690. a part of this church.

  691. So,

  692. let's review.

  693. Because we've been

  694. reconciled with God.

  695. We repent.

  696. We have trust.

  697. We have joy.

  698. We're sent on mission.

  699. There was a sci-fi TV show

  700. back in 2002

  701. called Firefly.

  702. It was canceled

  703. after only 14 episodes

  704. fueling the ire

  705. from those fans

  706. that believed it

  707. to be the best TV show

  708. of all time.

  709. Not necessarily

  710. one of those persons.

  711. Now,

  712. realizing

  713. an opportunity,

  714. this show

  715. was made

  716. into

  717. a motion picture

  718. and

  719. it was called

  720. Serenity

  721. and geeks

  722. everywhere rejoiced.

  723. Now,

  724. some of these

  725. passionate fans

  726. call themselves

  727. brown coats.

  728. I won't bore you

  729. with the details

  730. from the show

  731. explaining why

  732. they call themselves this

  733. but needless to say

  734. they wore brown coats.

  735. the premiere

  736. came

  737. and on opening night

  738. all over the country

  739. the brown coats

  740. came out.

  741. And they didn't just

  742. go to see the movie.

  743. They bought extra tickets.

  744. They would walk

  745. around the mall

  746. in their brown coats

  747. and they would pass out

  748. tickets to strangers.

  749. This was

  750. their enthusiasm

  751. for this film.

  752. How much more?

  753. How so much more?

  754. I'm not trying

  755. to reduce

  756. the story of redemption

  757. to a sci-fi film.

  758. How much more

  759. should we tell others

  760. about what we've received?

  761. Right?

  762. What we've experienced

  763. in Christ.

  764. A story.

  765. A beautiful story.

  766. The story of God

  767. redeeming

  768. and reconciling

  769. the world to himself.

  770. This God

  771. gives us

  772. clothes to wear

  773. the robes of righteousness

  774. that belong

  775. to his own son.

  776. And in Christ

  777. God delights in us

  778. and lavishes us

  779. with love

  780. and calls us

  781. his beloved

  782. sons and daughters.

  783. In the name

  784. of the Father

  785. and of the Son

  786. and of the Holy Spirit.

  787. Amen.

  788. Let's pray.

  789. Father,

  790. what a joy

  791. to know

  792. that you have

  793. forever forgotten

  794. our sins

  795. cast them

  796. forever

  797. deep into the ocean.

  798. You will never

  799. deal with us

  800. according to our sins

  801. or reward us

  802. according to our iniquities.

  803. For on the cross

  804. you dealt with Jesus

  805. according to our sins

  806. and rewarded him

  807. according to our iniquities.

  808. Father,

  809. thank you for such

  810. a lavish salvation.

  811. Rescue us

  812. in those delusional moments

  813. when we forget

  814. your forgetfulness.

  815. When we begin acting

  816. as though Jesus'

  817. sacrifice for our sins

  818. wasn't enough.

  819. When we think

  820. there's something more

  821. we can do

  822. to gain your acceptance

  823. and curry your favor.

  824. When we hear

  825. the accusations

  826. of Satan

  827. more clearly

  828. than your rejoicing

  829. over us

  830. with singing.

  831. So banner over us

  832. in love

  833. because Jesus'

  834. words to us

  835. are it is finished.

  836. So with great peace

  837. and fresh gratitude

  838. we pray in his name.

  839. Amen.
