  1. Today's Old Testament lesson comes from the book of Isaiah, chapter 30, verses 1 through 18.

    Isaiah 30:1–18

  2. Stubborn children, declares the Lord, who carry out a plan but not mine,

  3. and who make an alliance but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin,

  4. who set out to go down to Egypt without asking for my direction,

  5. to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt,

  6. therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,

  7. and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.

  8. For though his officials are at Zoan and his envoys reach Hames,

  9. everyone comes to shame through a people that cannot profit them,

  10. that brings neither help nor profit, but shame and disgrace.

  11. An oracle on the beasts of Negev, through a land of trouble and anguish,

  12. from where come the lioness and the lion, the adder and the flying fiery serpent,

  13. they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels,

  14. to a people that cannot profit them.

  15. Egypt's help is worthless and empty, therefore I have called her Rahab who sits still.

  16. And now go, write it before them on a tablet and ascribe it in a book,

  17. that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever.

  18. For they are rebellious people, lying children,

  19. children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord,

  20. who say to the seers, do not see,

  21. and to the prophets, do not prophesy to us what is right.

  22. Speak to us smooth things, prophecy illusions.

  23. Leave the way, turn aside from the path.

  24. Let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.

  25. Therefore, thus says the Holy One of Israel,

  26. because you despise this word and trust in the oppression and perverseness and rely on them,

  27. therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach in a high wall,

  28. bulging out and about to collapse,

  29. whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant,

  30. and its breaking is like that of a potter's vessel that is smashed so ruthlessly

  31. that among its fragments not a shard is found,

  32. with which to take fire from the hearth or dip up water out of the cistern.

  33. For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,

  34. in returning and rest you shall be saved,

  35. in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.

  36. But you were unwilling, and you said,

  37. no, we will flee upon horses.

  38. Therefore you shall flee away,

  39. and we will ride upon swift steeds.

  40. Therefore your pursuers shall be swift.

  41. A thousand shall flee at the threat of one.

  42. At the threat of five you shall flee

  43. till you are left like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,

  44. like a signal on a hill.

  45. Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you.

  46. And therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.

  47. For the Lord is a God of justice.

  48. Blessed are all those who wait for him.

  49. This is the word of the Lord.

  50. Thanks be to God.

  51. About a month ago, many of us in this room saw a film

  52. at the National Gallery of Art by Laura Hinson

  53. called Many Beautiful Things.

  54. And it's a documentary about Lilius Trotter,

  55. a 19th century British painter

  56. who left a career that would have brought fame and fortune

  57. in order to follow God's calling on our life

  58. to be a missionary to the poor and downtrodden in North Africa.

  59. In that departure to Africa,

  60. she says that holiness, not safety,

  61. is the end of our calling.

  62. Holiness, not safety,

  63. is the end of our calling.

  64. That's been a refrain for us

  65. these last few weeks in this season of Lent.

  66. Holiness.

  67. This sermon series is called

  68. The Habits of Holiness.

  69. We're looking at practices

  70. that would build and nurture holiness and virtue within us.

  71. The first week, we looked at submission.

  72. What does it mean to live under the authority of Christ's lordship?

  73. The second sermon we heard

  74. was about scripture.

  75. And what does it mean that the Bible is God-breathed?

  76. Last week, we looked at contentment

  77. and Paul's statement.

  78. How he has learned in whatever situation to be content.

  79. This week, these three themes

  80. come together quite beautifully

  81. in this 30th chapter of Isaiah

  82. that we heard Megan read earlier.

  83. We're going to see two problems that Judah had.

  84. Self-reliance

  85. and a refusal to listen to God's voice.

  86. Self-reliance

  87. or really failure to rely on God.

  88. And a refusal to listen to God's voice.

  89. We're going to see how those two faults are shared by us.

  90. We have those same faults and sin tendencies.

  91. And then lastly, we're going to look at two practices

  92. to help us overcome those problems.

  93. It would be kind of a black comedy

  94. if we're going to talk about listening to God's voice

  95. and we weren't to pray to ask God to help us with that.

  96. So let's do that right now.

  97. Amen.

  98. God, thank you for bringing us here.

  99. Thank you for guiding us.

  100. Thank you that you don't leave us

  101. without a knowledge of yourself

  102. or how to relate to you as our Father

  103. or to submit to you as our Lord.

  104. So we would ask your guidance today.

  105. Help us to hear your word.

  106. Help us to lay aside all of our pride and arrogance

  107. and our presuppositions

  108. and help us to really, truly hear

  109. what you have to say to us tonight.

  110. And not just tonight, Lord,

  111. but every day of our lives.

  112. And in hearing you, trust you

  113. with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  114. We pray in Jesus' name.

  115. Amen.

  116. So here in Isaiah 30,

  117. we find ourselves towards the end of the 8th century BC.

  118. And many years earlier, before this account,

  119. Israel had split into two kingdoms.

  120. The northern kingdom, which had kept the name Israel,

  121. has already been conquered by Assyria,

  122. and the Israelites have been hauled off into exile.

  123. The southern kingdom, now called Judah,

  124. finds itself a vassal state of Assyria

  125. because of the actions and decisions

  126. of the previous king Ahaz.

  127. Ahaz's son, the current king, Hezekiah,

  128. and by all accounts, a pretty good guy,

  129. he wishes to be free of Assyria,

  130. and so he seeks protection from Egypt

  131. to the south.

  132. Egypt, as we heard,

  133. was a worthless ally.

  134. In battle with Assyria,

  135. they would be routed just 100 miles from their home,

  136. while Assyria, 600 miles from their home,

  137. just completely routed them.

  138. God even mocks Egypt in verse 7.

  139. It's pretty funny.

  140. He calls her Rahab who sits still.

  141. In other words,

  142. Judah wasn't relying on Egypt,

  143. the glorious, beautiful, powerful queen of ages past.

  144. Judah was relying on Egypt,

  145. the invalid grandmother who sits at home

  146. watching Judge Judy and Fox News all day.

  147. I'm pretty sure.

  148. Ironically, and foolishly,

  149. Judah is going back to her old slave master

  150. to ensure her freedom.

  151. But that isn't what made Egypt the poor choice.

  152. Egypt was a poor choice

  153. because Judah was to rely on God,

  154. and God only for her protection,

  155. and safety,

  156. and salvation.

  157. Judah was to seek God's guidance

  158. instead of weaving her own web,

  159. as the language here

  160. could be literally translated in verse 1.

  161. Here in verses 1 and 2,

  162. we find the biblical insistence

  163. that God's people be guided by God's revelation.

  164. Ah, stubborn children

  165. who carry out a plan,

  166. but not mine.

  167. Who make an alliance,

  168. but not with my spirit.

  169. Who set out to go down to Egypt

  170. without asking for my direction.

  171. The last bit here in verse 2

  172. could be translated literally,

  173. you did not inquire for my mouth.

  174. You did not inquire for my mouth.

  175. This might lead some of you

  176. to recall the sermon from two weeks ago.

  177. Tommy preached from 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 3:16

  178. chapter 3, verse 16,

  179. which says,

  180. all scripture is God-breathed.

  181. Well, I mean, that idea wasn't new to Paul.

  182. God here is affirming it

  183. many hundreds of years earlier.

  184. God's revelation isn't static or dead.

  185. His revelation is his mouth.

  186. And it comes to us by his Holy Spirit.

  187. And in that sermon we heard two weeks ago,

  188. we heard also 1 Peter, chapter 1, verse 21,

    1 Peter 1:21

  189. which says,

  190. for no prophecy was ever produced

  191. by the will of man,

  192. but men spoke from God

  193. as they were carried along

  194. by the Holy Spirit.

  195. And here in Isaiah 30,

  196. it's the prophet Isaiah

  197. that is being carried along,

  198. delivering God's message.

  199. But Judah wouldn't receive it.

  200. They would refuse it.

  201. As a matter of fact,

  202. in verses 9 and 10,

  203. God notes how not only is Judah

  204. unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord,

  205. but they were telling Isaiah

  206. to say something else.

  207. The people had wanted Isaiah

  208. to change his message.

  209. They wanted him to lead them astray

  210. from the Holy One of Israel.

  211. In chapter 6 of Isaiah,

  212. the prophet Isaiah has a vision.

  213. A vision of God and his temple.

  214. Glorious.

  215. Breathtaking.

  216. Indescribable.

  217. So holy and indescribable

  218. that Isaiah could only describe

  219. the hem of his robe.

  220. And Isaiah had devoted his whole career

  221. to communicating this message

  222. of God's holiness.

  223. This beautiful, amazing vision.

  224. But Judah wouldn't see it.

  225. They didn't want to see it.

  226. They wanted Isaiah

  227. to just shut up about it.

  228. And instead,

  229. communicate smooth,

  230. affirming things.

  231. And not of a God

  232. whose splendor

  233. demanded

  234. the impossible things of them.

  235. Does that sound familiar?

  236. Yes.

  237. It does.

  238. Right?

  239. That's us.

  240. 2,700 years later.

  241. That's us.

  242. I know, because it's me.

  243. It's me.

  244. Now, if Judah were to listen

  245. to this strange man,

  246. they would have to alter

  247. their view of God

  248. and their way

  249. of responding to him.

  250. But as Flannery O'Connor wrote,

  251. the truth does not change

  252. according to our ability

  253. to stomach it.

  254. The truth does not change

  255. according to our ability

  256. to stomach it.

  257. So let's summarize

  258. Judah's problems

  259. and see how they apply to us.

  260. Okay?

  261. The first,

  262. in the face of trial and danger,

  263. Judah devises their own plan

  264. to get help

  265. instead of seeking God.

  266. And that's us.

  267. Right?

  268. I mean, just think back

  269. this week,

  270. this month,

  271. when an issue arose

  272. at work

  273. or at home

  274. or in your relationships

  275. and you had to figure out

  276. a solution.

  277. Did you ask God for help?

  278. Was he the first person

  279. you asked?

  280. Well,

  281. you might say,

  282. I'm a surgeon

  283. and should I ask God

  284. for a magical air

  285. to show me where to cut?

  286. You know,

  287. where the patient

  288. is dying on the table?

  289. Or like,

  290. I'm a musician

  291. and should I just

  292. wait for God

  293. to show me every note

  294. on the page to play?

  295. Is that the kind of reliance

  296. you're talking about?

  297. No, no.

  298. That's not what I'm talking about.

  299. But this is an air trombone,

  300. by the way,

  301. if you're wondering.

  302. So,

  303. what scripture teaches,

  304. cover to cover,

  305. is that God's children

  306. live in utter dependence

  307. on their father.

  308. Throughout a day,

  309. God's children

  310. have a spiritual posture

  311. of kneeling.

  312. Not physical,

  313. but a spiritual posture

  314. of kneeling,

  315. hands up,

  316. palms up,

  317. in need of God's provision.

  318. The posture simply says,

  319. help.

  320. Help me.

  321. Have mercy on me.

  322. Personally,

  323. when I get into a bind,

  324. if I remember to do this,

  325. I say what's called

  326. a Jesus prayer,

  327. an ancient prayer

  328. that helps us focus on God

  329. and his helping us,

  330. which says,

  331. Jesus,

  332. Son of God,

  333. have mercy on me,

  334. a sinner.

  335. And I say it a lot.

  336. But often,

  337. I don't go to that.

  338. You know,

  339. I get nervous pretty much

  340. every time I play music

  341. in front of people.

  342. That would mean on Sundays

  343. when I lead worship.

  344. And this is,

  345. I've always had this problem.

  346. And I remember once

  347. being asked by a friend,

  348. like,

  349. what do you do

  350. when you get nervous?

  351. How do you get through that?

  352. My response was,

  353. well,

  354. I just,

  355. hmm,

  356. what do I do?

  357. I just rely on the things

  358. that I've practiced,

  359. things that I've learned

  360. in my training.

  361. And then he asked,

  362. do you pray?

  363. And I realized I,

  364. I didn't most of the time.

  365. I realized that I'm much more

  366. of an orphan

  367. than a son of the Father.

  368. At least that's how I behave.

  369. An orphan who relies

  370. on his instinct,

  371. the strategies,

  372. strategies and coping measures

  373. he's learned on the streets,

  374. never fully trusts anyone,

  375. even after being received

  376. into a loving family

  377. and given parents

  378. who truly love him.

  379. We see overtones of this

  380. in verse one,

  381. right?

  382. God says,

  383. aha,

  384. stubborn children.

  385. So that's Judah's

  386. first problem,

  387. self-reliance.

  388. And Judah's other problem

  389. is that they don't listen

  390. to their father's voice.

  391. We've touched on this.

  392. They either ignore God's voice

  393. or because of their pride

  394. and arrogance,

  395. they twist his words

  396. to support their own agenda,

  397. to support their own

  398. systems of belief,

  399. or to prevent God

  400. from interfering

  401. with the things

  402. that they desire.

  403. So what should have Israel done?

  404. Verse 15 says,

  405. For thus said the Lord God,

  406. the Holy One of Israel,

  407. in returning and rest

  408. you shall be saved.

  409. In quietness and in trust

  410. shall be your strength.

  411. Again,

  412. he's addressing

  413. posture.

  414. Returning

  415. means repentance.

  416. And once we've

  417. returned

  418. to the Father's presence,

  419. we become quiet

  420. and still.

  421. And in that silence,

  422. God gives

  423. to us

  424. of himself.

  425. We find strength.

  426. faith.

  427. So what does that mean

  428. for us today?

  429. Does it mean we literally

  430. need to find times

  431. of silence

  432. and solitude?

  433. Well, yes.

  434. Yep, of course.

  435. And I think that's

  436. exactly what it means.

  437. And Jesus knew

  438. how critical it was, too.

  439. He knew how critical

  440. it was to find times

  441. of silence

  442. and solitude.

  443. And if the Son of God,

  444. the Son,

  445. who had known

  446. intimacy

  447. with the Father

  448. in a perfect

  449. dance

  450. of never-ending love,

  451. if he

  452. needed to

  453. find time

  454. alone

  455. with the Father

  456. to be intimate,

  457. in silence

  458. and solitude,

  459. how much more

  460. do we?

  461. Right?

  462. The world is

  463. so noisy.

  464. You know this.

  465. It's noisier

  466. than it's ever been.

  467. Audio,

  468. visually,

  469. informationally,

  470. we're drowning

  471. in information.

  472. We seek it

  473. on our smartphones

  474. as soon as we wake up

  475. and just before

  476. we go to sleep.

  477. As we walk on the street

  478. or wait in a line,

  479. a ubiquitous

  480. din of words

  481. resulting

  482. in an epidemic

  483. of numbness.

  484. And I think

  485. you've felt that.

  486. I have.

  487. And for whatever reason,

  488. we prefer the noise

  489. because it's so much

  490. more preferable

  491. to the alternatives

  492. the hard work

  493. of recognizing

  494. the true

  495. aesthetic beauty

  496. that surrounds us,

  497. the hard work

  498. of empathy,

  499. recognizing that

  500. every human soul

  501. we encounter

  502. is both made

  503. in the image of God

  504. and suffers the weight

  505. of a broken humanity,

  506. the hard work

  507. of living with

  508. our own thoughts

  509. and feelings

  510. and neuroses

  511. and hurt.

  512. And there's

  513. an alternative

  514. that's more frightening

  515. than the three

  516. of those.

  517. and that's

  518. plain old silence.

  519. Silence is frightening.

  520. I know this

  521. because I watch

  522. science fiction.

  523. I really don't

  524. reference science fiction

  525. in every sermon.

  526. I know this

  527. because I remember

  528. cutting the science fiction

  529. reference from my last sermon.

  530. Anyway, bear with me.

  531. Science fiction

  532. has a way

  533. of tapping

  534. into our fears

  535. through the enemies

  536. it projects.

  537. Now some of you

  538. may remember

  539. the Borg

  540. from Star Trek

  541. Next Generation.

  542. If you remember

  543. when the Borg

  544. was created

  545. it was at the end

  546. of the Cold War, right?

  547. The Borg was an enemy

  548. that was likened

  549. to the communist state

  550. in which

  551. individuality

  552. and self-identity

  553. is eradicated

  554. and all members

  555. are in complete service

  556. to the collective, right?

  557. It's a very

  558. Cold War fear.

  559. Now one thing

  560. that was supposed

  561. to be frightening

  562. about that enemy

  563. is that if you

  564. were assimilated

  565. you could never

  566. keep the voices

  567. and thoughts

  568. of the other

  569. individuals

  570. out of your head.

  571. Nowadays

  572. that's so much

  573. more preferable

  574. than the alternative.

  575. And the alternative

  576. is the antagonist

  577. in season six

  578. of Doctor Who.

  579. Anybody know

  580. who that is?

  581. The silence!

  582. Right?

  583. The silence.

  584. Frightening.

  585. And the members

  586. of the silence

  587. look like that guy

  588. from The Scream

  589. you know that

  590. expressionist painting

  591. that guy?

  592. Like that's what's frightening.

  593. It's just silence.

  594. It's tapped into our fear

  595. and silence represents

  596. our deepest fears.

  597. Who knows what monsters

  598. and devils

  599. we would find

  600. in a vacuum

  601. of sound waves

  602. in the space

  603. of our own

  604. minds and hearts.

  605. But silence

  606. is exactly

  607. what God prescribes

  608. for his people.

  609. For this reason

  610. we need

  611. to hear from God.

  612. We need to hear

  613. from God.

  614. Jesus often said

  615. he who has ears

  616. to hear

  617. let him hear.

  618. Our minister

  619. of care

  620. and community

  621. Melissa Litwiller

  622. met with our

  623. core group leaders

  624. this past Wednesday night

  625. and she made

  626. this profound point.

  627. If our God

  628. is a God who speaks

  629. and we truly believe that

  630. then in order

  631. to hear that voice

  632. we need to offer God

  633. the hospitality

  634. of silence.

  635. Isn't that beautiful?

  636. The hospitality

  637. of silence.

  638. Silence is the space

  639. in which we welcome

  640. God to speak.

  641. Soren Kierkegaard

  642. said the first thing

  643. the unconditional condition

  644. the very first thing

  645. that must be done

  646. is create silence.

  647. Bring about silence.

  648. God's word

  649. cannot be heard

  650. in the hullabaloo.

  651. Create silence.

  652. The kind of silence

  653. we need for listening

  654. is not that momentary silence

  655. of turning your attention

  656. to someone.

  657. It's much more than that.

  658. It's the act

  659. of self-emptying

  660. and bringing our

  661. whole selves

  662. before God.

  663. It's not a stupid silence.

  664. It's more a question

  665. of mobilizing

  666. our knowledge

  667. and our experience

  668. and making them

  669. fluid

  670. and lively

  671. so that they will

  672. serve the attention.

  673. So that they will

  674. serve the attention

  675. instead of replacing it.

  676. Now many of us

  677. can be good

  678. at reading the Bible

  679. but silence

  680. is the space

  681. in which the Bible

  682. reads me.

  683. It's the place

  684. where we put to death

  685. our pride

  686. and we truly listen.

  687. One author writes this,

  688. reading these pages

  689. that form the Bible

  690. written and transmitted

  691. by men of the past

  692. thus becomes

  693. listening to the voice

  694. of God in them.

  695. A process

  696. that requires

  697. a particular attention,

  698. vigilance,

  699. and availability.

  700. This attention,

  701. this vigilance,

  702. this availability

  703. are contrary

  704. to the hardened

  705. pride

  706. in which I presume

  707. to know better

  708. than others

  709. what they're saying

  710. and what they mean

  711. and better than God

  712. how he may act

  713. and how he may

  714. reveal himself.

  715. Right?

  716. Just an issue

  717. of pride

  718. and humility.

  719. Silence

  720. is a posture

  721. of humility

  722. before a God

  723. who speaks.

  724. and we've talked

  725. about

  726. Judah's two problems.

  727. Self-reliance

  728. and failing

  729. to hear

  730. God's voice.

  731. And we've explored

  732. how we wrestle

  733. with the same things.

  734. And I hope

  735. I've made a compelling

  736. case for the need

  737. to rely on God

  738. and for the need

  739. to seek silence

  740. but I've prayed

  741. a lot about this sermon.

  742. I walked down

  743. the streets

  744. of Mount Pleasant

  745. actually saying

  746. Jesus,

  747. Son of God,

  748. have mercy on me,

  749. a sinner.

  750. And I feel like

  751. I need to

  752. present

  753. real concrete

  754. applications

  755. on how to rely

  756. on God

  757. and how to hear

  758. his voice.

  759. Habits of holiness

  760. that would deepen

  761. our trust in God

  762. by remembering

  763. God's works

  764. of provision

  765. for us

  766. and that would

  767. create a space

  768. to hear God's voice.

  769. So let's start

  770. with a habit

  771. that would deepen

  772. our trust in God.

  773. We see all

  774. throughout the Bible

  775. God exhorts us

  776. to remember

  777. to remember

  778. God's works

  779. for us.

  780. And as a matter of fact,

  781. Jesus gave us

  782. this table,

  783. a sacred memorial

  784. where we remember

  785. and enact

  786. Jesus' death,

  787. life,

  788. and resurrection.

  789. Over the course

  790. of hundreds of years,

  791. the church has given

  792. us practices

  793. to help us remember

  794. God's active presence

  795. in our lives.

  796. One of those

  797. is called

  798. the Daily Examen,

  799. E-X-A-M-E-N.

  800. It is to be done

  801. at the end of a day.

  802. A really great time

  803. of day to do it

  804. is just before

  805. you fall asleep.

  806. The things we

  807. think about

  808. right before

  809. we fall asleep

  810. are often the things

  811. that are close

  812. to our hearts,

  813. aren't they?

  814. They're the idols

  815. that we covet,

  816. the things we desire,

  817. things that we think

  818. would bring us happiness.

  819. or there are

  820. deepest fears.

  821. And the examine

  822. pushes those things

  823. out of our minds

  824. and brings God

  825. to the forefront.

  826. There's basically

  827. five steps

  828. to an examine.

  829. The first is

  830. to become aware

  831. of God's presence.

  832. Become aware

  833. of God's presence.

  834. It's helpful to remember

  835. that God is a Father

  836. who is always

  837. waiting for us,

  838. always ready

  839. to welcome us,

  840. no matter

  841. what we've done.

  842. The second step

  843. is to review

  844. the day with gratitude.

  845. Now there's

  846. four different things

  847. that will come to mind

  848. as you review the day.

  849. All right?

  850. The first is

  851. ways that you

  852. have obeyed God.

  853. And when that

  854. comes to mind,

  855. give God thanks

  856. for the strength

  857. to be able to obey.

  858. The second is

  859. ways that you've

  860. failed God,

  861. ways that you've

  862. sinned.

  863. So confess those things,

  864. ask for forgiveness,

  865. and move on.

  866. The third thing

  867. is a way God

  868. has shown

  869. his faithfulness

  870. to you,

  871. how he's provided

  872. for you,

  873. a way that

  874. God has shown up

  875. and it's been obvious.

  876. And a fourth thing

  877. that will come to mind

  878. is a time when

  879. God didn't seem

  880. to be there.

  881. A difficult time

  882. in trial.

  883. And you didn't

  884. notice his presence.

  885. And then

  886. you look to see

  887. ways that God

  888. was present

  889. even in that

  890. difficult situation.

  891. Like, wow,

  892. this,

  893. even despite

  894. like the pain

  895. or the sadness

  896. of the situation,

  897. this person

  898. really cared for me.

  899. Right?

  900. Or I,

  901. my prayers

  902. became more passionate,

  903. maybe more angry,

  904. and God

  905. seemed really

  906. much more real

  907. to me

  908. than he ever has.

  909. So,

  910. beware of God's presence,

  911. review the day

  912. with gratitude.

  913. Third is pay attention

  914. to your emotions.

  915. The fourth is

  916. choose one feature

  917. of the day

  918. and pray from it.

  919. And the fifth

  920. is to look

  921. toward tomorrow.

  922. Now,

  923. if you fall asleep

  924. while you're doing this,

  925. like,

  926. if you don't finish

  927. and you fall asleep,

  928. don't feel bad.

  929. What

  930. father or mother

  931. would feel hurt

  932. or offended

  933. if in talking

  934. to the child

  935. in their arms,

  936. the child falls asleep?

  937. What a gift

  938. to be able

  939. to fall asleep

  940. during the examine.

  941. Now,

  942. the examine

  943. is a practice

  944. you can do

  945. as a family.

  946. I know that

  947. not every one

  948. of us here

  949. has children,

  950. but I think

  951. this will still

  952. be helpful for you

  953. if you can't

  954. remember five steps,

  955. you can remember this.

  956. The fact that

  957. we go throughout

  958. the day

  959. and we experience

  960. God in both

  961. positive and

  962. negative moments

  963. in our lives,

  964. that's a paradox,

  965. right?

  966. And paradox

  967. sounds like

  968. a pair of ducks.

  969. And this is a,

  970. this duck is dirty

  971. and this is a,

  972. this is a clean duck.

  973. And our,

  974. our family does

  975. the examine

  976. every day,

  977. every time we sit

  978. down for dinner

  979. together

  980. and we say,

  981. okay,

  982. what were your

  983. yay ducks?

  984. And what were

  985. your yuck ducks?

  986. And the kids love it.

  987. They love to talk

  988. about the positive

  989. things that happen

  990. in the day

  991. and then we talk

  992. about the negative

  993. things that have

  994. happened in the day

  995. and then we help

  996. the children to see,

  997. well,

  998. okay,

  999. that might have

  1000. happened,

  1001. but did you see

  1002. how like,

  1003. mommy really cared

  1004. for you in that

  1005. situation?

  1006. Isn't it great

  1007. that God has

  1008. provided you a mommy

  1009. that's like really

  1010. loving,

  1011. generous,

  1012. compassionate,

  1013. like,

  1014. or,

  1015. or in that situation

  1016. you had to stay

  1017. at your friend's

  1018. house.

  1019. Isn't it nice

  1020. to have a friend?

  1021. See what we do?

  1022. Now,

1023. with all of the change

  1024. our family has gone

  1025. through the last six

  1026. years,

1027. this has been a helpful

  1028. practice in keeping

  1029. God's goodness

  1030. at the center

  1031. of our thoughts.

  1032. As a family,

  1033. we've seen God's

  1034. presence and faithfulness

  1035. every day

  1036. in all situations.

  1037. It's been a practice

  1038. that's helped us

  1039. to know contentment.

  1040. All right,

  1041. so that's the first

  1042. practice,

  1043. the examine,

  1044. or yay ducks,

  1045. yak ducks,

  1046. however you choose

  1047. to remember it.

  1048. And the second practice

  1049. that we're going

  1050. to talk about

  1051. is a practice

  1052. to help us hear

  1053. and listen to

  1054. the word of God,

  1055. and that's called

  1056. the Lectio Divina.

  1057. There are many

  1058. variations on this

  1059. practice.

1060. The one I like to use

  1061. is produced by the

  1062. Irish Jesuits,

  1063. and it's called

  1064. Sacred Space.

  1065. You can find it

  1066. at sacredspace.ie,

  1067. and they frame it

  1068. as a structured way

  1069. of entering into

  1070. a disciplined,

  1071. fruitful silence.

  1072. Let me review

  1073. the second steps.

  1074. If you forget it,

  1075. just go to

  1076. sacredspace.ie.

  1077. It's that,

  1078. because it's produced

  1079. by the Irish Jesuits.

  1080. So the first step

  1081. is entering into silence.

  1082. Relax,

  1083. slow down,

  1084. and become centered

  1085. in Jesus.

  1086. Let the thoughts

  1087. and the stresses

  1088. of the day go.

  1089. Be still.

  1090. The second step,

  1091. encounter the

  1092. presence of God.

  1093. Jesus says,

  1094. Behold,

1095. I stand at the door

  1096. and knock.

  1097. If anyone hears

  1098. my voice

  1099. and opens the door,

1100. I will come into him

  1101. and eat with him

  1102. and he with me.

  1103. Jesus always arrives

  1104. before me,

  1105. desiring to connect

  1106. with me,

  1107. even before,

  1108. even more than

  1109. my most intimate friend.

  1110. The third step

  1111. is freedom.

  1112. I remind myself

  1113. that there are things

1114. God has yet to teach me

1115. and I ask for the grace

  1116. to hear them

  1117. and to be changed

  1118. by them.

  1119. The fourth is consciousness,

  1120. which is really

  1121. the examine,

  1122. which we've just discussed.

  1123. The fifth

  1124. is scripture.

  1125. So I take time

1126. to read a scripture passage

  1127. slowly,

  1128. a few times.

  1129. Now,

  1130. what word,

  1131. a phrase,

  1132. captures my attention?

  1133. So like,

  1134. enjoying a piece

  1135. of hard candy,

  1136. I slowly let

  1137. that word

  1138. or phrase

  1139. slowly circulate

  1140. in my mouth

  1141. as my tongue

  1142. explores

  1143. and savors its surface.

  1144. I allow myself

  1145. to dwell

  1146. on anything

  1147. that strikes me.

  1148. The sixth

  1149. is conversation.

  1150. What feelings

  1151. rise up in me

  1152. as I pray

  1153. and reflect

  1154. on this passage?

  1155. I imagine

  1156. Jesus himself

  1157. sitting in a chair

  1158. opposite me

  1159. and I open

  1160. my heart to him

  1161. and share with him

  1162. my thoughts,

  1163. feelings,

  1164. and reflections.

  1165. And then I conclude.

  1166. It's the seventh step.

  1167. With this,

  1168. now may the God

  1169. have peace

  1170. through the blood

  1171. of the eternal covenant

  1172. brought back

  1173. from the dead,

  1174. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1175. that great shepherd

  1176. of the sheep.

  1177. May he equip you

  1178. with everything good

  1179. for doing his will

1180. and may he work in us

1181. what is pleasing to him

  1182. through Jesus Christ

  1183. to whom be glory

  1184. forever and ever.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. The idea of listening

  1187. may be nerve-wracking

  1188. for many of us.

  1189. I don't know about you,

  1190. but to sit down

  1191. and to be silent

  1192. by myself

  1193. causes anxiety.

  1194. The staff

  1195. has been doing

  1196. the Lectio Divina

  1197. now

  1198. for a while

  1199. and still,

  1200. like,

1201. every time I sit down

  1202. to do this,

1203. my heart rate goes up.

  1204. Ah,

  1205. this is so quiet.

1206. I need to be doing something

  1207. or looking at something

  1208. or hearing something

  1209. or what have you.

  1210. But over time,

  1211. I've really looked forward

  1212. to this time

  1213. because I know

  1214. it's going to be a time

  1215. where I'm really

  1216. richly fed.

  1217. It also might be

  1218. nerve-wracking

  1219. because it begs

  1220. the question,

1221. if I listen to God,

1222. what am I going to hear?

1223. Is it going to be

1224. the sound of my voice?

1225. Is it going to be

1226. the voice of Morgan Freeman?

  1227. The exhortation

  1228. to listen to God

1229. is very much the same

1230. as listening to a spouse

  1231. or friend, okay?

1232. So we go to Scripture

  1233. and we listen

  1234. the same way

  1235. we're to listen

  1236. to a friend,

  1237. discerning

  1238. what is my friend

  1239. really trying to say

  1240. in the things

  1241. that he's telling me?

  1242. Does that make sense?

  1243. Like, what's really

  1244. at the source

  1245. and core

  1246. of what he's trying

  1247. to communicate?

  1248. That's listening to God.

  1249. Offering to God

  1250. the hospitality

  1251. of listening

  1252. is the opposite

  1253. of giving God

  1254. the pitiful offering

  1255. of an instant

  1256. of our attention.

  1257. It's relinquishing

  1258. our arrogance,

  1259. inclining toward God,

  1260. and offering to Him

  1261. our whole being.

  1262. Speaking of anxiety,

  1263. you might feel

  1264. some anxiety

1265. as we talk about this

  1266. because you feel

  1267. guilty or ashamed.

  1268. Because you know

  1269. you should do this

1270. and you haven't done it.

1271. Or you don't do this enough.

  1272. Or you don't see

  1273. how you could ever

  1274. possibly do it

  1275. because life

  1276. and circumstances

  1277. seem to prevent

  1278. even a moment

  1279. of silent reflection.

  1280. I totally get you.

  1281. Okay?

  1282. I feel this too.

  1283. And here's what you

  1284. and I both need

  1285. to remember.

  1286. These practices

  1287. have never bought

  1288. anyone favor with God.

  1289. Because Christianity

  1290. is not about

1291. what we do for God.

  1292. It's about what God

  1293. has done for us.

  1294. The Father

  1295. is always waiting

  1296. for us,

  1297. ready to give

  1298. Himself to us.

  1299. Isaiah chapter 30

    Isaiah 30:18

  1300. verse 18,

  1301. what we heard earlier,

  1302. says this,

  1303. Therefore,

  1304. the Lord waits

  1305. to be gracious

  1306. to you

  1307. and therefore

  1308. He exalts Himself

  1309. to show mercy

  1310. to you.

  1311. For the Lord

1312. is a God of justice.

  1313. Blessed are all

  1314. those who wait

  1315. for Him.

  1316. God shows us

  1317. His justice

  1318. in that everything

  1319. we could feel

  1320. shamed about

  1321. or guilty over

  1322. He's taken care

  1323. of on the cross.

  1324. There's no judgment

  1325. or wrath

  1326. or disapproval

  1327. that awaits

  1328. God's children.

  1329. There's nothing

  1330. left of that.

  1331. We go to Him

  1332. in silence

  1333. not to give

  1334. but to receive,

  1335. to receive a work

  1336. that's already

  1337. been done for us,

  1338. accomplished for us,

  1339. the work of Christ's

  1340. life,

  1341. death,

  1342. and resurrection

  1343. which has brought us

  1344. into God's family

  1345. and into the relationship

  1346. with the Father.

  1347. Coming to Him

  1348. in silence

  1349. is not climbing

  1350. a high chair

  1351. and hoping to receive

  1352. one or two

  1353. small spoonfuls

  1354. of God's grace.

  1355. Coming to Him

  1356. in silence

  1357. is jumping

  1358. into an ocean

  1359. of God's grace.

  1360. That grace

  1361. is what awaits us

  1362. in returning

  1363. and rest,

  1364. in quietness

  1365. and trust.

  1366. In the name

  1367. of the Father

  1368. and of the Son

1369. and of the Holy Spirit.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Let's pray.

  1372. Amen.

  1373. Lord, we would want

  1374. to be holy.

  1375. We recognize that

  1376. as your calling

  1377. in our lives.

  1378. So we first

  1379. thank you

  1380. for making us holy,

  1381. for declaring us

  1382. forgiven,

  1383. for declaring us

  1384. justified,

  1385. for declaring us

  1386. to be righteous

  1387. because of what

1388. your Son did for us.

  1389. Give us faith

  1390. to receive that.

1391. And then give us faith

  1392. to pursue you

  1393. in silence

  1394. and then to be

  1395. pursued

  1396. by your word,

1397. to be read by it,

  1398. changed by it,

  1399. and transformed

  1400. by it.

  1401. God,

  1402. thank you

  1403. for speaking to us

  1404. through your word

  1405. and for

  1406. speaking to us

  1407. and transforming us

  1408. by your sacrament.

  1409. We look forward

  1410. to that even now.

1411. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1412. Amen.

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Amen.

  1416. Amen.

  1417. Amen.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.

  1422. Amen.

  1423. Amen.

  1424. Amen.
