  1. Well, good morning to you all.

  2. Good morning to you all.

  3. This is a retreat. We can actually speak and respond.

  4. Unlike church where you have to be quiet.

  5. Glad that everybody's here. Glad that you all survived the night.

  6. I hope you got a decent amount of sleep. I hear the bonfire went late.

  7. Unofficial off-book festivities went later.

  8. Hope you got sleep.

  9. It's been a great time here for most of us.

  10. I think that we're here as a final session, a final gathering of worship before we head back to D.C.

  11. I don't know if anybody came out here simply to join us for worship.

  12. Oh, my goodness. Well done.

  13. Extra crowns in heaven for you.

  14. Not bad, ladies. Not bad. That's fantastic.

  15. Okay. Well, in that case, a little word of introduction is in order.

  16. For some of us, this is our Sunday worship gathering.

  17. For some of us, this is the concluding session of a parish retreat on the spiritual gifts.

  18. I had always thought that after this, this would be known as the spiritual gifts retreat.

  19. Obviously, that is not true.

  20. It will hereafter be known as the shipmaster retreat.

  21. And that was painfully obvious last night.

  22. There's nothing that we can do about it.

  23. So we have to embrace it and move on.

  24. But as I was thinking about this final session and how to wrap up, these two passages came to mind.

  25. This amazing passage in Matthew chapter 25 that we'll look at in a little while.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  26. And then the more guiding passage that we're going to look at, 1 Peter 4, verses 7 through 11.

    1 Peter 4:7–11

  27. And this is the first one to reflect on as we have been talking about the spiritual gifts.

  28. We've been talking about understanding the gifts, what they are in general.

  29. We've been talking about how to discern the gifts, what they are in particular.

  30. And this morning, the topic will be, what does it mean to steward those gifts well?

  31. What does it mean to be good stewards of all that God has given us?

  32. And these passages speak to that in particular.

  33. And so first I want to look at 1 Peter 4, verses 7 through 11.

    1 Peter 4:7–11

  34. And I think even for those of us who have not been here talking about spiritual gifts, this is an amazing passage.

  35. I mean, you'd be hard-pressed to find a book that does a better job explaining what ministry is.

  36. Whether you're ministering in your church or in your job or in any other context.

  37. It's a great little primer on ministry.

  38. And the point that it makes is this, that being a Christian means being a steward.

  39. That to be a Christian is to be a steward of everything.

  40. And so we're going to look at two things here, the context of our stewardship and the exercise of our stewardship.

  41. So let's pray as we get started.

  42. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word.

  43. As we do every week, we thank you for your promise and ability to speak to us.

  44. We pray that as we open your word this morning that you would clear away the fog of a late night.

  45. That you would help the caffeine to work in our system.

  46. That you would, above all, remove distractions and obstacles so that you can empower your word to come alive.

  47. To confront us with the reality of the gospel and the presence in the face of your son, Jesus Christ.

  48. And it's in his name that we pray.

  49. Amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. So first of all, the context of our stewardship.

  52. I want to spend a few minutes just looking at this first verse in the passage in 1 Peter.

  53. If you have Bibles, you can open them.

  54. If you have iPhones, you can fire them up.

  55. 1 Peter 4, verse 7.

    1 Peter 4:7

  56. The end of all things is at hand, therefore.

  57. And I love this.

  58. There's an amazing statement being made here.

  59. Now, when you first hear this, obviously, what do you think of?

  60. Right.

  61. And crazy people with sandwich board signs on street corners, right?

  62. The end is near.

  63. The end is near.

  64. But I want you to notice that Peter goes on to say,

  65. The end of all things is at hand, therefore.

  66. Be self-controlled and sober-minded.

  67. You know what the word sober means in the Bible?

  68. The word sober means sane.

  69. It's the opposite of insane or being out of your mind.

  70. So think of the demon-possessed man in Mark chapter 5.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  71. And after Jesus casts out the demons and heals him,

  72. we find the man clothed and in his right mind, right?

  73. Same word.

  74. So what is sanity then?

  75. Sanity means the ability to correctly perceive reality, right?

  76. So to be sober is to be sane.

  77. And to be sane is to correctly perceive reality,

  78. to see things for what they actually are.

  79. So he's saying the end of all things is at hand,

  80. therefore, it's more important now than ever before

  81. for you to see things as they really are.

  82. Be sane.

  83. Think clearly.

  84. And the reason is because the end is coming.

  85. But by end, he doesn't mean a full stop to creation.

  86. What he actually means is a major change is coming.

  87. A major transition in history is upon us.

  88. February 28, 2002.

  89. That was the official date on which national currencies

  90. in many parts of Europe ceased to be legal tender.

  91. And the euro became the only acceptable currency.

  92. February 28, 2002.

  93. Before that date, there was a period of overlap.

  94. So there was a time in many of these countries

  95. where you could continue using your old currency

  96. or you could exchange that old currency for euros

  97. and start using the euros early.

  98. So there was a period of time

  99. in which both currencies were accepted, right?

  100. But during that time, the word was going out

  101. that this date is coming.

  102. February 28 is coming.

  103. February 28 is upon us.

  104. It's drawing near.

  105. And the time is now for you to exchange

  106. all of your old currency

  107. to get all of the new currency

  108. so that you'll be ready when that date comes

  109. because after that date passes,

  110. all of that old currency

  111. will just be worthless pieces of paper.

  112. It'll have no value in the new economy.

  113. So there were people who recognized that,

  114. who saw clearly that that date was coming,

  115. who took appropriate measures to prepare,

  116. and there were people who didn't.

  117. And so the Bible says that we are now

  118. in a time of overlap, right?

  119. Theologians call it the already but not yet, right?

  120. The old world order or the old economy

  121. is still in operation, right?

  122. So sin and death are still factors.

  123. They're still realities.

  124. Injustice still exists.

  125. Exploitation still happens.

  126. And the old currencies are still in use.

  127. Your intelligence, your popularity,

  128. your attractiveness, your race,

  129. your privilege, your education,

  130. your accomplishments,

  131. all of these forms of currency,

  132. in other words,

  133. all of these things that will get you

  134. something in this world,

  135. they have value in this world.

  136. They will,

  137. they're things that you can use

  138. to acquire other things, right?

  139. To give you access to other things.

  140. All of these forms of currency are,

  141. for the time being,

  142. still accepted in the world.

  143. And yet what Peter is saying is this,

  144. the kingdom of God has broken into this world.

  145. And one day the old world

  146. is going to fully pass away

  147. and the kingdom will become

  148. the new world order,

  149. complete with a new economy

  150. and a new currency.

  151. Does this make sense?

  152. So Jesus' entire earthly ministry,

  153. there's one way to look at it

  154. where you're saying,

  155. you know,

  156. Jesus did these miracles

  157. and why did he do the miracles?

  158. Well, to prove that he was the son of God.

  159. No, in fact,

  160. he didn't seem really concerned

  161. with proving that he was the son of God.

  162. He simply was.

  163. Why did he do the miracles?

  164. It was to give people a preview

  165. of what this new world order would look like.

  166. Every single miracle is meant to teach us

  167. what the new world order will be like.

  168. So he gives sight to the blind.

  169. Why?

  170. To show that in the new world order

  171. there will be no darkness.

  172. There will be no ignorance to the truth.

  173. Right?

  174. He makes the lame walk.

  175. Why?

  176. To show that the kingdom

  177. will be a world

  178. in which no one is encumbered

  179. and paralyzed by sin and death.

  180. Right?

  181. He raises the dead

  182. to show that in the kingdom

  183. there will be no more death.

  184. One day the water of this world

  185. will become the wine

  186. of the kingdom of God.

  187. He's giving us a preview of that.

  188. In the kingdom economy,

  189. the proud will be made humble

  190. but the low will be lifted up.

  191. In the kingdom economy,

  192. the one who is willing to lose his life

  193. for the sake of Jesus and the gospel

  194. will gain it back in full

  195. but the one who tries to hold on to his life

  196. will lose it.

  197. In the new world order,

  198. in the kingdom,

  199. those who mourn

  200. will once and for all be comforted.

  201. Those who hunger

  202. and thirst for righteousness

  203. will be satisfied.

  204. The poor will become rich.

  205. The meek will inherit the earth.

  206. The last will become first.

  207. The outsiders will become the guests of honor.

  208. In the new world order of the kingdom of God,

  209. all of this is coming.

  210. And so Peter is saying,

  211. the end of all things is near.

  212. The end of the old world order

  213. and the new world order,

  214. the new economy,

  215. the new kingdom has come.

  216. Therefore, we need to think clearly.

  217. We need to pray faithfully.

  218. And we need to exchange

  219. all of our old currency

  220. for the new currency of the kingdom.

  221. What is that currency?

  222. Love.

  223. It's the only currency accepted

  224. in the new world order.

  225. That's why it goes on in verse 8 to say,

  226. above all,

  227. once you're thinking clearly,

  228. once you understand what's happening,

  229. once you understand

  230. that that date is quick approaching,

  231. exchange all of that old currency

  232. for the one currency that will matter.

  233. Love.

  234. Above all,

  235. keep loving one another earnestly

  236. since love covers a multitude of sins.

  237. So he's saying this,

  238. our accomplishments,

  239. our wealth,

  240. our popularity,

  241. our success

  242. will all one day be worthless.

  243. Because in God's economy,

  244. love is the only currency.

  245. But it's the kind of love

  246. love that we do not generate,

  247. cannot create on our own.

  248. It's something that has to be given to us

  249. or entrusted to us.

  250. It's a love that has to be given to us

  251. through Jesus Christ.

  252. And that's why earlier in his letter,

  253. Peter says in chapter 1,

  254. Blessed be the God and Father

  255. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  256. According to his great mercy,

  257. he has caused us to be born again

  258. to a living hope

  259. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  260. from the dead

  261. to an inheritance

  262. that is imperishable,

  263. undefiled,

  264. and unfading,

  265. kept in heaven for you.

  266. So by dying for us,

  267. by taking our place,

  268. by atoning for our sin,

  269. Jesus secures for us

  270. an inheritance.

  271. And you may think of that inheritance

  272. as a stockpile

  273. of the currency

  274. of the kingdom of God.

  275. It's a kingdom inheritance.

  276. So here's the context of our stewardship

  277. to sort of answer the first question.

  278. The context of our stewardship is this,

  279. as we think about

  280. how do we use

  281. all that we have?

  282. How do we prioritize things in our lives?

  283. What comes first?

  284. What is the thing to which

  285. we put everything else under?

  286. What goes above all of that?

  287. It's love

  288. because the old world order

  289. with its old economy

  290. is passing away

  291. and God's kingdom is replacing it.

  292. And the old currency in God's kingdom,

  293. I'm sorry,

  294. and the old currency is passing away

  295. and being replaced by the new currency

  296. of love.

  297. And not just love,

  298. but gracious love.

  299. Love that doesn't come from us,

  300. but that is given like a gift to us.

  301. And as believers,

  302. we have been made stewards

  303. of that love.

  304. So the next question we need to ask is this,

  305. what does that mean?

  306. Specifically as it relates

  307. to our spiritual gifts.

  308. Because if you read the passage,

  309. he goes on and he says,

  310. show hospitality without grumbling.

  311. Absolutely.

  312. And then he goes on

  313. and what's the next thing

  314. we're called to do?

  315. Use our gifts

  316. like good stewards.

  317. And it's amazing

  318. if he's trying to distill,

  319. you know,

  320. have the right perspective,

  321. be thinking clearly,

  322. get your priorities in order.

  323. And one of the main things

  324. he focuses on

  325. is how we use our gifts.

  326. In other words,

  327. that figures prominently

  328. in what it means to be stewards

  329. anticipating the coming of the kingdom.

  330. How we use our gifts.

  331. So this brings us

  332. to the second thing

  333. I want to focus on,

  334. the second half,

  335. the exercise of our stewardship.

  336. In other words,

  337. how do we actually go about it?

  338. What does it mean

  339. to be a good steward?

  340. He says in verse 10,

  341. as each has received a gift,

  342. use it to serve one another

  343. as good stewards

  344. of God's varied grace.

  345. Whoever speaks

  346. is one who speaks oracles of God.

  347. Whoever serves

  348. is one who serves

  349. by the strength

  350. that God supplies

  351. in order that in everything

  352. God may be glorified

  353. through Jesus Christ.

  354. To him belong glory

  355. and dominion

  356. forever and ever.

  357. Amen.

  358. So the first point

  359. we see here

  360. is the good stewards,

  361. and this may seem obvious

  362. to some of you,

  363. but it's worth pointing out

  364. that good stewards,

  365. part of what it means

  366. to be a good steward

  367. is that you actually use

  368. what's been entrusted to you.

  369. You actually use it.

  370. And that's why I wanted

  371. to look at Matthew 25,

  372. this wonderful parable

  373. that Jesus tells

  374. about stewardship,

  375. the parable of the talents.

  376. A wealthy man entrusts

  377. all of his money

  378. to three servants.

  379. He has five talents

  380. to one servant,

  381. two talents to another,

  382. one talent to a third.

  383. A talent is a very large

  384. sum of money,

  385. so we might as well

  386. think of it as

  387. five million dollars,

  388. two million dollars,

  389. and one million dollars.

  390. A lot of money.

  391. And when he returns,

  392. after being away

  393. for a while,

  394. the master finds

  395. that the first two servants

  396. have actually used

  397. the talents.

  398. They've invested them well,

  399. and they've each

  400. made a return.

  401. They've each doubled

  402. their investment,

  403. and they both are rewarded.

  404. Five talents becomes ten,

  405. two become four,

  406. they're both rewarded.

  407. Enter into the pleasure

  408. of your master.

  409. But the third servant

  410. simply digs a hole

  411. in the ground,

  412. buries the talent,

  413. and then makes a bunch

  414. of excuses for why

  415. he didn't invest it.

  416. The master says,

  417. well, what happened?

  418. And if you notice,

  419. he actually blames the master.

  420. Well, I heard what kind

  421. of person you were.

  422. It's sort of a

  423. passive-aggressive way

  424. of saying,

  425. I did what I did,

  426. and it's your fault, right?

  427. A little bit of blame

  428. shifting going on.

  429. Master's not having it,

  430. and so the master,

  431. of course,

  432. rewards the first two servants,

  433. but he condemns the third.

  434. You wicked

  435. and slothful servant.

  436. Not holding back.

  437. And then the point

  438. of the parable

  439. comes in verse 29,

  440. for to everyone

  441. who has

  442. will more be given,

  443. and he will have

  444. an abundance.

  445. But from the one

  446. who has not,

  447. even what he has

  448. will be taken away.

  449. Now that's

  450. a little confusing.

  451. Let me put it

  452. in context for you.

  453. Think about your muscles.

  454. I don't know

  455. how often you think

  456. about your muscles,

  457. but think about

  458. your muscles now.

  459. If you develop

  460. your muscles,

  461. if you use

  462. your muscles,

  463. if you invest

  464. your muscles

  465. in physical activity,

  466. then what is

  467. the reward

  468. that comes?

  469. The reward

  470. that comes

  471. is the increased

  472. capacity

  473. to do more.

  474. Right?

  475. So the more

  476. you use them,

  477. the more

  478. you gain

  479. a capacity.

  480. In other words,

  481. to you,

  482. more is given.

  483. Right?

  484. But if you don't

  485. use your muscles,

  486. if you lie in bed

  487. all day long

  488. and binge watch

  489. Netflix

  490. and do that

  491. for days and days

  492. and days,

  493. then what happens?

  494. Even what you have

  495. will be taken away.

  496. Right?

  497. They atrophy.

  498. Right?

  499. So remember,

  500. yesterday,

  501. we said that

  502. the spiritual gifts

  503. are the continued

  504. ministry of Jesus Christ

  505. in the world

  506. through individual

  507. Christians

  508. by the power

  509. of the Holy Spirit.

  510. So take that image

  511. and apply it

  512. to this parable.

  513. Jesus is the master

  514. and he has divided

  515. his power

  516. or his ministry

  517. among all

  518. of his people.

  519. Five talents,

  520. two talents,

  521. ten talents,

  522. fifteen talents.

  523. He's divided

  524. his ministry up.

  525. And we've each

  526. been entrusted,

  527. we've each

  528. been made stewards

  529. of spiritual gifts

  530. that actually

  531. belong to Jesus.

  532. And the same

  533. principle is true.

  534. The more we use

  535. our gifts,

  536. the more we invest

  537. in the life

  538. of the church,

  539. the more we prioritize

  540. building others up

  541. and bringing those

  542. outside the church

  543. in,

  544. the more we will grow

  545. in what we can do.

  546. The more you use

  547. what you've been given,

  548. the more you will be

  549. able to do.

  550. But if we remain

  551. uninvolved,

  552. if we remain

  553. unengaged,

  554. if we remain

  555. unwilling to serve,

  556. no matter what

  557. excuses we may make,

  558. our gifts will

  559. atrophy.

  560. Or the unknown

  561. gifts will remain

  562. dormant.

  563. So good stewards

  564. use what has been

  565. entrusted to them.

  566. they use.

  567. Now,

  568. I know yesterday

  569. I said

  570. that gifts are not

  571. the same thing

  572. as talents.

  573. But in this case,

  574. the talents represent

  575. the gifts.

  576. Last night,

  577. we also learned

  578. make sure you get

  579. that in your notes.

  580. I think last night

  581. we also learned

  582. that there are gifts,

  583. there are talents,

  584. and there are

  585. varieties.

  586. God's very grace.

  587. God's very grace show.

  588. That's what we'll

  589. call it next year,

  590. the God's very grace show.

  591. But even some of

  592. those things that

  593. we may look down on,

  594. we may laugh at,

  595. we may think,

  596. oh, that's just some...

  597. There are ways that

  598. God may be able

  599. to use that.

  600. If there's anything

  601. I want to impress

  602. upon you,

  603. it is not to

  604. underestimate what

  605. God can do

  606. through you.

  607. Even through the

  608. parts of you,

  609. the aspects of you

  610. that you think

  611. are simply silly,

  612. inconsequential,

  613. random,

  614. that God can

  615. use all of it.

  616. But the question is,

  617. will you use all of it?

  618. Will you do that?

  619. Or will you let it atrophy?

  620. So what does a good steward do?

  621. A good steward uses

  622. all that they've been given,

  623. not in ways that reflect

  624. their own preferences,

  625. but those that reflect

  626. the preferences of the owner.

  627. that's what a good steward does.

  628. So Peter says,

  629. we should do all of this,

  630. what?

  631. In order that in everything

  632. God may be glorified

  633. through Jesus Christ.

  634. To him belong glory

  635. and dominion

  636. forever and ever.

  637. Amen.

  638. The point is,

  639. our gifts are not about us,

  640. but about loving others

  641. in ways that glorify God.

  642. And if we lose

  643. this central focus,

  644. our gifts can quickly

  645. become about us.

  646. Right?

  647. If we lose the focus

  648. that God is the one

  649. who enables it,

  650. God is the one

  651. who empowers it,

  652. and God's glory

  653. is the purpose

  654. for which it was all

  655. given to us.

  656. Loving others

  657. for God's glory.

  658. If we lose that,

  659. then what happens

  660. is that our gifts

  661. begin to turn inward.

  662. Our gifts begin

  663. to become twisted.

  664. They begin to become distorted.

  665. They begin to point

  666. in the wrong direction.

  667. Right?

  668. So those with the gift

  669. of leadership,

  670. leadership can be used

  671. to build up

  672. our own kingdoms

  673. rather than the kingdom

  674. of God.

  675. Right?

  676. The gift,

  677. the life-giving gift

  678. of encouragement

  679. can start to turn inward

  680. and become empty flattery.

  681. Right?

  682. Genuine hospitality

  683. can give way

  684. to entertaining.

  685. You know,

  686. where the focus

  687. is on the beauty

  688. of your home

  689. and the quality

  690. of the cuisine

  691. rather than on

  692. strangers becoming friends

  693. and friends becoming family.

  694. They begin to turn inward.

  695. The gift of helping

  696. can become the need

  697. to be needed.

  698. Right?

  699. The gift of speaking

  700. can be used

  701. to build a cult

  702. of personality.

  703. The gift of serving

  704. can give way

  705. to resentment.

  706. Right?

  707. These gifts

  708. that are meant

  709. to be life-giving

  710. for us

  711. and those whom we serve

  712. can turn inward

  713. and become destructive

  714. to us

  715. and those whom we

  716. may unintentionally

  717. harm.

  718. So unless

  719. the glory of God

  720. is our central focus

  721. all of these gifts

  722. that are entrusted

  723. to us as stewards

  724. will become distorted

  725. turned inward

  726. and this is why

  727. it's crucial for us

  728. to remember

  729. and to remind one another

  730. that we are stewards

  731. and not owners

  732. of all that we have

  733. because a steward

  734. uses what they've been given

  735. in ways that reflect

  736. the values of the owner

  737. and not the steward.

  738. So being a Christian

  739. as I said

  740. at the beginning

  741. is being a steward.

  742. To be a Christian

  743. is to be a steward.

  744. Our vision

  745. at Church of the Advent

  746. is

  747. every member of ministry

  748. where every single person

  749. in our church

  750. is actively serving

  751. and using their gifts

  752. fully

  753. for the common good.

  754. And I hope it's clear

  755. by now

  756. at the end of the weekend

  757. that this isn't primarily

  758. because we need it.

  759. Right?

  760. We could restructure

  761. our budget

  762. and decide to start

  763. hiring people

  764. to do all of the things

  765. that we need to do.

  766. Hire a setup crew

  767. and hire a cleanup crew

  768. and hire professionals

  769. to do all of this stuff.

  770. Right?

  771. Just professionalize everything

  772. and you could just come

  773. and enjoy

  774. a well-produced service

  775. and hopefully get

  776. some meaning out of it

  777. and you know,

  778. you would maybe

  779. enjoy the fact

  780. that we would maybe

  781. have fewer

  782. technical difficulties

  783. and fewer glitches

  784. and fewer last-minute

  785. emergencies

  786. where we're scrambling

  787. and the vergers

  788. would no longer

  789. have to wonder

  790. will there be bread

  791. this week?

  792. And we would have

  793. perfect bread

  794. and I could tear it

  795. and I would never

  796. even break a sweat

  797. and all of it

  798. could be smooth

  799. and polished

  800. and amazing

  801. and all of that

  802. would be incredible,

  803. right?

  804. We could probably afford it.

  805. We would have to

  806. make some changes

  807. but we could probably do it.

  808. But our church would die.

  809. We would die.

  810. We would die.

  811. We would fade away.

  812. So the point is not

  813. that we need you to serve

  814. because if you don't serve

  815. then things don't work right.

  816. I mean,

  817. on the surface

  818. that's the reason.

  819. The real point is

  820. you need to serve.

  821. You need to be involved

  822. because it's your design

  823. as a steward

  824. of God's varied grace

  825. and love.

  826. If you don't use

  827. these gifts

  828. that God has given you,

  829. they will atrophy.

  830. So our priority

  831. is actually

  832. not just filling

  833. volunteer slots.

  834. We want to structure

  835. our church

  836. in a way

  837. that requires you.

  838. The whole design

  839. of the church

  840. is meant to require

  841. that people serve

  842. because we are a body

  843. and you are cells

  844. in that body

  845. like we talked about yesterday.

  846. And what that gives you

  847. is not only

  848. the opportunity

  849. to grow

  850. and to learn your gifts

  851. but it gives you

  852. the tremendous fulfillment

  853. and joy

  854. in seeing the ways

  855. that God can use you.

  856. If you're made

  857. to serve

  858. and to meet needs

  859. in that way

  860. then when you do it

  861. it will bring you joy

  862. and you will get to see

  863. what God does.

  864. You'll get to sense

  865. what it's like

  866. to be part of something great

  867. that God is doing

  868. in the world.

  869. So for those of you

  870. who are already

  871. deeply involved

  872. and many of you are

  873. and by the way

  874. you've seen people

  875. even this weekend

  876. serving and setting up

  877. and cleaning up food

  878. and running sound

  879. and running the check-in

  880. and caring for our kids

  881. and all of the various ways

  882. that people have been serving

  883. you should congratulate them

  884. and thank them

  885. and tell them

  886. how much you appreciate them.

  887. If you're already serving

  888. then I pray

  889. that as you do that

  890. God would clarify for you

  891. the ways that he's gifted you

  892. to serve.

  893. The ways that he has

  894. empowered you to bring life

  895. to his body

  896. and I pray that God

  897. would empower you

  898. for all that you're doing.

  899. If you're not

  900. if you're still sort of

  901. on the periphery

  902. if you're trying to figure out

  903. whether or not

  904. you want to become

  905. more involved

  906. if you're not yet

  907. playing a significant role

  908. in the life of our church

  909. in any way

  910. I know that there are

  911. a lot of great reasons

  912. for that out there.

  913. So this isn't a time

  914. to point fingers

  915. or to turn any screws

  916. but you should at least

  917. reflect on this question.

  918. Are you investing

  919. in currency

  920. of the old world

  921. that will one day

  922. be meaningless

  923. or are you investing

  924. in things

  925. that will last

  926. into God's kingdom

  927. things that will

  928. have value

  929. in an economy

  930. where the only currency

  931. that matters

  932. is the currency

  933. of God's love.

  934. And I want to leave you

  935. with that question

  936. and close us in prayer.

  937. Lord we do thank you

  938. that even as we talk

  939. about stewardship

  940. even as we talk about

  941. what it means

  942. to be oriented

  943. toward your glory

  944. we have the greatest

  945. example of that

  946. in your son Jesus Christ.

  947. Lord who is the ultimate

  948. steward

  949. who took all

  950. that you had entrusted

  951. to him

  952. laid down his own life

  953. to see it through

  954. Lord.

  955. We thank you

  956. for the beauty of that

  957. we thank you

  958. for the beauty

  959. and the hope

  960. of the gospel

  961. we thank you

  962. for the coming

  963. of your new kingdom

  964. and I pray

  965. that for everybody

  966. here not just

  967. not just in this church

  968. but that you would

  969. give us all a vision

  970. for what good stewardship

  971. looks like in our jobs

  972. in our vocations

  973. that you've called us to

  974. Lord in every sphere

  975. of vocation

  976. that we would think

  977. as stewards

  978. that we would recognize

  979. all that we have

  980. all the access

  981. we have

  982. all the opportunities

  983. we have

  984. as things to be stewarded

  985. for your kingdom.

  986. Lord I pray

  987. that this would be

  988. real in our church community

  989. and I pray

  990. it would be real

  991. as far as you scatter

  992. us around the world

  993. in all of the varied ways

  994. that you've called us

  995. to serve

  996. the common good

  997. of this world.

  998. Lord we pray

  999. that you would

  1000. infuse us

  1001. with power

  1002. and bless us

  1003. with an awareness

  1004. of the ways

1005. that each one of us

  1006. is called to serve

  1007. in unity

  1008. as your kingdom

  1009. breaks into this world.

  1010. And we pray this

1011. in your son's holy name.

  1012. Amen.
