  1. I was thinking about it, and I've been a Christian for almost 20 years.

  2. I became a Christian right around age 21 and 40, so I suppose technically 19 years.

  3. And if I look back over that period of time and all that has happened,

  4. there is one consistent nagging question that has undoubtedly been the greatest source of doubt for me in my faith.

  5. And yes, pastors are full of doubt sometimes, maybe even more so than other people.

  6. And there's been one central cause behind most of my doubt, and that's the question of suffering, what we call theodicy.

  7. Basically put this question of how, if God is all good and all powerful, can there be such suffering and evil and injustice in the world?

  8. I have wrung my hands and stayed up late many nights wondering about that question.

  9. And if you just quickly scan the headlines, you know, I did this on Friday.

  10. I just kind of went and said, you know, what are the highlight headlines in the news?

  11. Here's what I saw at like a three-minute glance.

  12. Back-to-back hurricanes wreaking havoc, killing people and destroying homes and entire communities.

  13. A bomb explosion in the London Underground.

  14. North Korea menacingly firing missiles over Japan.

  15. White nationalist rallies happening around the country.

  16. That's just a three-minute scan.

  17. And then I started thinking about the lives of people I know.

  18. I mean, people right here in our own community.

  19. Right now in our community, there are people struggling with loneliness,

  20. with unwanted, unchosen singleness, or with marital strife, facing unemployment or impending unemployment.

  21. People who are struggling because they are homesick.

  22. People who are struggling because of challenges trying to parent their children.

  23. Or maybe their kids are sick.

  24. People facing sickness themselves.

  25. People grieving the recent death of dear immediate family, loved ones.

  26. I mean, all of this is happening right now.

  27. And that's just a tiny sliver of what's going on in our greater community.

  28. And so if you think about that, you realize that if you're a Christian and you have any integrity at all,

  29. in a world like this, you have to face really tough questions.

  30. You cannot be a Christian in a world like ours and not have to wrestle with very tough questions like this one.

  31. The good news is we are not the first people to ask these questions.

  32. And in fact, God's people have been asking these questions for thousands of years.

  33. And if you look in the Bible, there's probably no one who asks hard questions with more brutal honesty than a man named Habakkuk.

  34. He's one of the prophets.

  35. You can find him in the Old Testament.

  36. And Habakkuk, it's a short book, but it's packed with incredibly profound and unique writing.

  37. Habakkuk is unique among the prophets that we see in the Bible for one major reason.

  38. Most prophets follow a similar formula.

  39. You have God, and then the prophet is aligned with God.

  40. And the prophet, on behalf of God, is questioning the people.

  41. Right? So the prophet speaks for God, and the prophet questions God's people.

  42. Why do you go on sinning?

  43. Why don't you come and repent?

  44. Why don't you trust and put your faith in the Lord?

  45. Why are you abandoning the Lord your God?

  46. And this is the sort of central prophetic message that you see again and again and again.

  47. Well, Habakkuk is different.

  48. Habakkuk is not questioning God's people.

  49. Habakkuk is actually aligning himself with God's people,

  50. and Habakkuk is questioning God on their behalf.

  51. And it's a very intense dialogue that we see unfold here.

  52. And through all of this questioning of God, the pushback, the doubt,

  53. somehow Habakkuk remains faithful.

  54. So we're going to ask, how is that possible?

  55. What do we have to learn from this amazing little book?

  56. So we're going to be spending the next few weeks in a series called,

  57. How Long, O Lord?

  58. Asking this question together.

  59. And tonight we really come to understand doubt

  60. and the role that doubt plays in our faith.

  61. So Habakkuk chapter 1 is going to show us a couple of things.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  62. First, the doubt in our faith.

  63. And then secondly, the promise in our pain.

  64. The promise that is embedded deeply in the pain and suffering of the world.

  65. So let's pray together as we get started.

  66. Our Father, we thank you for your word,

  67. and we thank you that sometimes your word is clear and makes sense,

  68. and sometimes it's very hard to understand,

  69. or it says things that we don't want to hear.

  70. But we know that all of it is good and profitable,

  71. and by the power of your Holy Spirit can equip us

  72. and mature us and nourish us in ways that we cannot find anywhere else.

  73. And so we come hungry and thirsty and open-hearted, Lord,

  74. by the power of your Spirit to receive your word today.

  75. We pray this in your Son's holy name. Amen.

  76. So Habakkuk chapter 1, it really begins with a bang.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  77. I mean, he dives right in.

  78. There's no introduction.

  79. He just gets right to it.

  80. Brass-tax kind of guy.

  81. But let me just give you a little bit of information about Habakkuk.

  82. We don't know a whole lot about him.

  83. He's one of what we call the minor prophets.

  84. Now, don't let that make you think that he's less important.

  85. You know, read the major prophets,

  86. but the minor prophets are less important.

  87. That's not what it's talking about.

  88. Minor prophets simply means shorter in length.

  89. So you have Isaiah, Jeremiah.

  90. They're very long.

  91. The minor prophets are a lot shorter.

  92. Habakkuk's only three chapters.

  93. So it's like book-length prophets versus blog-length prophets

  94. is maybe a better way to think of it.

  95. And Habakkuk is an interesting word name.

  96. It's Akkadian.

  97. And quite frankly, scholars can't agree on how to pronounce it.

  98. And so I'm going to say Habakkuk.

  99. Some people say Habakkuk.

  100. The traditional Hebrew way of saying it is Habakkuk.

  101. I tried that in the mirror,

  102. and I just couldn't do it with a straight face.

  103. Every time I did it, I would laugh.

  104. And so I'm just not, I can't do that.

  105. I'm not a speaker of Hebrew.

  106. And so I'm just going to say Habakkuk,

  107. for lack of a better option.

  108. We don't know a lot about him personally,

  109. but I think his words immediately resonate.

  110. Just listen to how he opens his writing here.

  111. The first four verses are Habakkuk talking to God.

  112. And then verses 5 through 11 are God's response.

  113. And then verse 12 through the end of the chapter, verse 17,

  114. that's Habakkuk responding back to God's response.

  115. So that's how it, you know, Habakkuk, God, Habakkuk.

  116. That's how it goes.

  117. So here's how it opens up.

  118. Habakkuk says this to God.

  119. Oh Lord, how long shall I cry for help,

  120. and you will not hear?

  121. Now is there anybody who has not said that?

  122. How long will I cry for help, and you will not hear?

  123. Or cry to you, violence!

  124. Violence!

  125. And you will not save.

  126. You know, as I said before,

  127. I think this is a question for the ages.

  128. God, if you're all good and all powerful,

  129. how can you look at what's happening to me, to us,

  130. and not do anything about it?

  131. Where are you?

  132. And then God, as I said, answers in verses 5 through 11.

  133. We'll look at that more in a little bit,

  134. but suffice it to say,

  135. it is not what Habakkuk expects at all.

  136. It just makes things worse.

  137. And so after that, in verse 13,

  138. listen to what Habakkuk goes on to say.

  139. He says in verse 13,

  140. you who are of purer eyes than to see evil,

  141. and cannot look at wrong,

  142. why do you idly look at traitors,

  143. and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man

  144. more righteous than he?

  145. So what's he saying there?

  146. I mean, he's kind of being honest, right?

  147. God, I know we're not perfect.

  148. I know we deserve some judgment.

  149. You know, nobody's saying we're perfect,

  150. but they are way worse than us.

  151. He's talking about the Chaldeans.

  152. This is one of the words in the Bible for the Babylonians.

  153. If you know anything about the Babylonians,

  154. they were, as God himself says,

  155. cruel and vicious and wicked and bloodthirsty.

  156. They didn't even know or care about the God of the Bible.

  157. They worshipped their own strength.

  158. And Habakkuk is saying,

  159. you know, we don't have our act together.

  160. We've got some ways we need to shape up,

  161. but we're nothing like them.

  162. And then he says,

  163. how do you dare to be a God who hates evil,

  164. who claims to love goodness and justice?

  165. You claim to love us,

  166. and yet you're going to let them sweep across the world,

  167. take us captive like a man would put sand into a jar.

  168. And you've got to hear the desperation in his voice.

  169. You know, at the core of his questioning of God,

  170. Habakkuk is zeroing in on a disconnect that he perceives

  171. between what God has revealed

  172. and his lived experience.

  173. That's the disconnect.

  174. Right?

  175. God, you say you're good,

  176. and yet you seem to tolerate evil just fine.

  177. God, you say you care about justice,

  178. and yet we're drowning in injustice.

  179. God, you say that you love us,

  180. but from where I'm looking,

  181. it seems like you've abandoned us.

  182. God, you say,

  183. help us understand.

  184. That's the core of chapter one.

  185. So you might say,

  186. he's expressing some doubt, right?

  187. So I want to stop there and just ask,

  188. what are we meant to make of this?

  189. Why is this in Scripture to begin with?

  190. And I think it shows us a couple of things

  191. just before we move on.

  192. I want to focus a little bit on the implications of this.

  193. The first thing it shows us is this.

  194. It shows us that doubt is extremely important.

  195. That in fact, for believers,

  196. I think doubt is extremely valuable.

  197. It's valuable.

  198. Not only does God allow Habakkuk to doubt him,

  199. right, these are some of the strongest words

  200. leveled at God anywhere in the Bible.

  201. I mean, he is towing the line of direct accusation.

  202. God not only allows him to do that,

  203. but then God takes this writing

  204. and he places it in his canon.

  205. This is holy inspired Scripture, right?

  206. This is meant to be profitable

  207. for our growth.

  208. And this is, I think,

  209. a clear sign

  210. that doubt is meant to be

  211. integral to a healthy,

  212. maturing faith.

  213. Right?

  214. So, you know,

  215. you can't really get this

  216. unless you look at the whole book.

  217. And sometimes, you know,

  218. week to week, sermon by sermon,

  219. we can lose the forest for the trees.

  220. But if you look at the whole scope of Habakkuk,

  221. commentators will say

  222. that it's not just a book on doubt.

  223. It's partly that.

  224. But I think one of the best commentators out there

  225. is a guy named Palmer Robertson.

  226. And he says this.

  227. He says,

  228. Remarkably,

  229. the reader is allowed

  230. the unique privilege

  231. of witnessing the progress

  232. of the prophet himself

  233. in submitting to a new concept

  234. of the Lord's purposes

  235. among Israel and the nations.

  236. The idea of growth

  237. or maturing in faith

  238. is essential to appreciating

  239. the genius of this prophecy.

  240. You hear what he's saying?

  241. This isn't just about doubt.

  242. As he expresses doubt,

  243. we get to see Habakkuk grow

  244. and mature

  245. because he's doing that.

  246. And if you look at the book,

  247. Habakkuk begins in sorrow,

  248. but you know how it ends?

  249. In song.

  250. The whole third chapter

  251. is a song of praise.

  252. Now, some of you grew up

  253. in religious homes

  254. and you grew up

  255. or religious churches

  256. where the culture

  257. was very much about

  258. accept what you've been taught

  259. and don't ask questions.

  260. And if you asked hard questions,

  261. well, this seems to be

  262. an inconsistency

  263. and how do we understand this?

  264. And these two books

  265. seem to contradict each other.

  266. You know, people,

  267. parents or pastors

  268. would say,

  269. don't ask questions.

  270. Faith means just accepting

  271. even if you don't understand.

  272. Right?

  273. And so some of us were taught

  274. that if you ask questions

  275. or have doubts

  276. and express those,

  277. that means you have

  278. a weak faith.

  279. Well, I think that Habakkuk

  280. shows us the exact opposite

  281. is true.

  282. That in fact,

  283. not asking questions

  284. means you have

  285. a weak faith.

  286. Because what that shows you

  287. is that your faith

  288. is like this really

  289. delicate house of cards,

  290. this sand castle,

  291. this glass sculpture

  292. and that you have to

  293. protect it

  294. from even a strong wind

  295. that might knock it over.

  296. That's a weak faith.

  297. A strong faith

  298. is a faith

  299. that can hold up

  300. even in the storm,

  301. even when everything

  302. is breaking loose

  303. and things are falling apart.

  304. A strong faith

  305. is that kind of faith

  306. that can be amassed

  307. in the storm

  308. that you can cling to.

  309. How do you get that?

  310. You have to weather

  311. a few storms.

  312. It has to be challenged.

  313. So we're not called

  314. to have a blind faith.

  315. We're called to have

  316. a bold faith.

  317. Boldly facing doubt.

  318. Boldly asking hard questions.

  319. So that then begs

  320. the next question

  321. which is okay,

  322. well how do we get

  323. that kind of faith?

  324. How does doubt

  325. lead to that kind of faith?

  326. And I would say

  327. we need to look at Habakkuk

  328. and what he's actually doing

  329. with his doubt.

  330. What's he doing

  331. with all these questions?

  332. Is he hiding them?

  333. Is he going off

  334. and complaining

  335. to other people about them?

  336. I can't believe.

  337. Can you believe what he's,

  338. you know.

  339. No, he's coming directly

  340. to God with them.

  341. In prayer.

  342. He's wrestling with God

  343. over questions

  344. that he has about God.

  345. Right?

  346. He's falling on his knees

  347. before him.

  348. And what we've got to understand

  349. is that, I mean,

  350. verse 12 is the giveaway

  351. that really shows us

  352. his posture.

  353. He says,

  354. even in the midst

  355. of his frustration

  356. and his anger,

  357. he says,

  358. O Lord, my God.

  359. My Holy One.

  360. Right?

  361. So this isn't a man

  362. who's standing back

  363. from God saying,

  364. you better explain all this

  365. or I, you know,

  366. I'm not going to,

  367. you need to help me

  368. or, you know,

  369. the jury's still out on you.

  370. That's not what he's doing.

  371. He's like a child.

  372. He's falling into the arms of God

  373. and saying,

  374. help.

  375. This doesn't make sense.

  376. Help.

  377. My God.

  378. My Holy One.

  379. I know I belong to you.

  380. I know that you're holy.

  381. I'm not even questioning that.

  382. Help me.

  383. Understand this.

  384. It's a very different posture.

  385. You see doubt expressed

  386. in different ways

  387. in the Bible.

  388. There's a great example of this,

  389. of the contrast

  390. in Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  391. Interesting back-to-back accounts

  392. between two individuals.

  393. You have Zechariah

  394. and you have Mary.

  395. And in both accounts,

  396. Zechariah and Mary,

  397. an angel comes out of nowhere

  398. and says,

  399. you're about to have a baby.

  400. And both people

  401. are astounded, right?

  402. Zechariah's past childbearing years,

  403. Mary's a virgin.

  404. So both Zechariah and Mary

  405. express doubt to the angel.

  406. What?

  407. How can this be?

  408. What's going to happen?

  409. So they both question

  410. the claim being made

  411. by the divine being.

  412. So up to that point,

  413. they're the same.

  414. But then the angel's response

  415. makes these stories

  416. radically different.

  417. What happens to Mary?

  418. The angel is kind

  419. and loving

  420. and generous

  421. and gives her more information

  422. and helps her to understand, right?

  423. What happens to Zechariah?

  424. Right?

  425. He gets struck mute.

  426. Right?

  427. Oh, you're asking questions.

  428. I'm going to take away

  429. your ability to speak

  430. until the baby comes, right?

  431. And you just think,

  432. well, what's going on there?

  433. Is Gabriel just kind of

  434. having a bad day?

  435. And he's like,

  436. I'm tired of all the questions.

  437. Bam!

  438. No more words from you.

  439. You know?

  440. And it's interesting

  441. to try to make sense of that.

  442. But the answer, I think,

  443. comes from the fact

  444. that the Bible

  445. has a very nuanced

  446. understanding of doubt.

  447. A very nuanced

  448. understanding of doubt.

  449. And this is where

  450. you see the difference.

  451. There's what you might think of

  452. as honest doubt.

  453. And there's what you might call

  454. dishonest doubt.

  455. And if you look at Mary,

  456. Mary is an honest doubter.

  457. Which means this.

  458. She is honestly looking

  459. for more information.

  460. She's honestly wanting

  461. to understand.

  462. Right?

  463. She knows that she's a virgin

  464. and she simply wants

  465. to understand

  466. the angel better.

  467. So she asks literally,

  468. how will this happen

  469. since I have not known

  470. my husband?

  471. How is this going to happen?

  472. What are the mechanics of it?

  473. Because I don't,

  474. I can't,

  475. I don't know how

  476. this kind of thing works.

  477. Right?

  478. And if you look at Zechariah,

  479. what he's actually asking

  480. is subtly

  481. but very meaningfully different.

  482. Zechariah says,

  483. not how will this happen,

  484. but he says,

  485. how do I know?

  486. It's a very different tone.

  487. So in other words,

  488. he's not saying,

  489. help me understand this better.

  490. He's saying,

  491. prove it.

  492. Maybe I'll believe you,

  493. maybe not.

  494. Prove it to me

  495. and then we'll see.

  496. Very different kind of doubt

  497. because honest doubt

  498. comes from a place

  499. of intellectual humility.

  500. Honest doubt is saying,

  501. you know,

  502. I know I don't understand everything.

  503. I know you know

  504. way more than I do.

  505. Understand things way beyond

  506. what I'll ever be able to.

  507. Help me understand.

  508. Give me wisdom.

  509. Give me knowledge.

  510. Give me understanding.

  511. That's honest doubt.

  512. It's asking questions

  513. and wanting answers.

  514. Dishonest doubt

  515. is called dishonest doubt

  516. because it actually tends

  517. to come from a place

  518. of intellectual pride.

  519. Right?

  520. It's the posture

  521. that assumes

  522. you know most everything

  523. worth knowing

  524. and even more importantly

  525. that if you can't

  526. understand something,

  527. if something doesn't fit

  528. with your sense

  529. of how the world works,

  530. it must not be true.

  531. See, so it's not really doubt.

  532. It's more of a kind

  533. of posture of judgment.

  534. I will decide

  535. whether this is true or false.

  536. I will decide.

  537. And if it doesn't make sense to me,

  538. it's probably not true.

  539. And there are a number

  540. of people who say,

  541. you know,

  542. you look at Christianity

  543. and there are these mysteries

  544. and seeming inconsistencies

  545. and things that don't line up.

  546. That's a clear sign

  547. that it's not true.

  548. And I would say,

  549. if that's your way of thinking,

  550. you should really question that.

  551. I think assuming

  552. that things can only be true

  553. if we understand them

  554. fully

  555. is the height

  556. of human arrogance.

  557. Right?

  558. Unexplained mysteries

  559. don't automatically mean

  560. something isn't true.

  561. In fact,

  562. if we're really dealing

  563. with the deepest mysteries

  564. of existence,

  565. wouldn't we expect

  566. that there would be

  567. some things

  568. that might be just beyond

  569. our vast intellectual capacity?

  570. So I think one of the things

  571. to take away from this is,

  572. beware simplistic answers.

  573. Do you know,

  574. some of the greatest times

  575. of growth for me

  576. in my own spiritual life

  577. have come from people

  578. asking me,

  579. knowing I'm a Christian,

  580. and asking me

  581. really, really,

  582. really hard questions.

  583. Well, how do you explain this?

  584. What do you Christians

  585. think about that?

  586. Because what it does

  587. is it drives me

  588. into prayer,

  589. and it drives me

  590. into God's Word.

  591. And it drives me

  592. to ask and seek out

  593. the advice and wisdom

  594. of people who have been

  595. believers longer than I have,

  596. who are more mature

  597. than I am.

  598. And all of those things

  599. bring about

  600. great opportunities

  601. for rich maturity

  602. and growth.

  603. But we have to be willing

  604. to face the hard questions

  605. if we want that

  606. to be true for us.

  607. So that's part one,

  608. the doubt in our faith

  609. and the significant role

  610. it plays in Habakkuk's life

  611. and in our life.

  612. And now,

  613. with the rest of our time,

  614. we're going to look

  615. at God's response,

  616. verses 5 through 11,

  617. and we'll see the promise

  618. to be found

  619. in our pain.

  620. Here's how God responds.

  621. Now listen,

  622. imagine that you're Habakkuk,

  623. you've just said

  624. what you've said.

  625. Now here's what God says.

  626. Look among the nations

  627. and see,

  628. wonder and be astounded,

  629. for I'm doing a work

  630. in your days

  631. that you would not believe

  632. if told.

  633. And you can imagine

  634. Habakkuk saying,

  635. I'm ready,

  636. lay it on me,

  637. this is going to be amazing.

  638. And then guess what God says?

  639. If you go on,

  640. right?

  641. I'll just summarize it for you.

  642. God essentially says,

  643. and I'm sort of putting

  644. words in his mouth,

  645. hopefully this is

  646. an accurate paraphrase,

  647. you think it's bad now?

  648. You think this is bad?

  649. It's going to get way worse.

  650. Right?

  651. I'm going to raise up

  652. the Chaldeans,

  653. the Babylonians,

  654. who are bloodthirsty

  655. and wicked

  656. and they only worship

  657. their own strength,

  658. and they're going to take

  659. all of you captive

  660. like a man piles sand

  661. into a jar.

  662. Now that's an interesting reference

  663. considering the promise

  664. given to Abraham, right?

  665. I'm going to make

  666. your descendants

  667. as vast and as numerous

  668. as grains of sand.

  669. Right?

  670. Well now God's saying,

  671. I'm going to let

  672. this foreign nation

  673. who hates me

  674. and hates you,

  675. they're going to gather

  676. all of that sand up

  677. and put it in a jar.

  678. They're going to take you captive.

  679. Right?

  680. And Habakkuk is horrified

  681. and so Habakkuk fires back

  682. and says essentially,

  683. Lord, as I said,

  684. I know we're not perfect

  685. but there's so much worse.

  686. How could you let this happen?

  687. And chapter 1

  688. ends with this image

  689. of Habakkuk saying,

  690. you know,

  691. all of us are like fish

  692. in the sea

  693. and you're allowing

  694. the Babylonians

  695. to be like this fisherman

  696. who just mercilessly

  697. like a commercial fisherman

  698. just throws these big nets out

  699. and gathers everybody up

  700. and then at the end of the day

  701. they don't even give you

  702. thanks for that, God.

  703. They worship their nets.

  704. And then he says,

  705. are you just going to let them

  706. take over the world?

  707. Is this your great plan?

  708. End scene.

  709. Right?

  710. That's how chapter 1 ends.

  711. But fortunately,

  712. we have an advantage,

  713. I think,

  714. that Habakkuk didn't have

  715. which means we know

  716. a little bit more

  717. of the story.

  718. This is happening

  719. in the, you know,

  720. around the 6th,

  721. 7th century BC

  722. so we have a little

  723. more perspective.

  724. All Habakkuk knows

  725. is that this wicked nation

  726. is going to conquer them

  727. and take them into exile.

  728. And yet more happens

  729. and 600 years later

  730. the Apostle Paul

  731. is preaching in a synagogue

  732. and he's preaching

  733. to a combination

  734. of Jews and God-fearers.

  735. These are people

  736. who are Gentiles

  737. who want to follow God

  738. and have a relationship

  739. with Him

  740. and so they're Gentile converts

  741. to Judaism.

  742. And so he's preaching

  743. to this mixed audience

  744. and he's talking about Jesus.

  745. And he's talking about

  746. how because of the cross

  747. and the death

  748. and resurrection of Jesus

  749. it's now possible

  750. to be saved in a way

  751. that the law

  752. didn't make possible.

  753. And that's something

  754. that is now open

  755. to everyone.

  756. Jews and Gentiles alike, right?

  757. This is this new message

  758. of the gospel.

  759. In other words,

  760. Paul is sort of,

  761. he's just sort of laying out

  762. God's plan for salvation

  763. and then of all things

  764. he could have quoted

  765. in the Old Testament scriptures,

  766. where does he go?

  767. He quotes Habakkuk 1.5.

  768. I mean, that's crazy, right?

  769. He quotes this passage

  770. full of doubt.

  771. And he quotes

  772. where God is saying,

  773. look, you scoffers,

  774. be astounded and perish,

  775. for I'm doing a work

  776. in your days,

  777. a work that you will not believe

  778. even if one tells it to you.

  779. He quotes Habakkuk 1.5.

  780. And the fact that he quotes it

  781. where he quotes it

  782. tells us something

  783. loud and clear.

  784. Paul is saying,

  785. when God said these words

  786. to Habakkuk,

  787. ultimately these words

  788. were pointing

  789. to the coming of Jesus.

  790. Habakkuk never could have known that.

  791. But this is what God

  792. is actually saying.

  793. He's saying to Habakkuk,

  794. look and be astounded.

  795. Look at what's about to happen.

  796. He says,

  797. you know,

  798. I'm going to raise up Babylon

  799. and you're going to be

  800. taken into exile.

  801. But that's just the beginning.

  802. He says,

  803. then I'm going to raise up Assyria

  804. and Assyria is going to conquer Babylon.

  805. And then you're going to be

  806. set free again.

  807. And then Greece is going to take over.

  808. And because the Greeks take over,

  809. their language is going to become

  810. the dominant common language

  811. among these known people groups.

  812. And then after that,

  813. you're going to become decentralized.

  814. And instead of the temple,

  815. you're going to develop

  816. the synagogue system.

  817. And so all of these Gentiles

  818. are going to start to come in

  819. and become familiar

  820. with the Jewish way of life

  821. and religion.

  822. And then Rome is going to take over

  823. and establish the Pax Romana.

  824. And then the known world

  825. is going to be connected by roads

  826. and a common system of government

  827. and systems and institutions.

  828. And then this perfect storm

  829. of major political forces

  830. that Habakkuk,

  831. you're not even going to begin

  832. to understand.

  833. This perfect storm

  834. is going to be established

  835. from all these countervailing movements

  836. in world history.

  837. And right in the midst

  838. of that perfect storm,

  839. God's Son is going to plunge Himself.

  840. And while you, Habakkuk,

  841. may cry out,

  842. O Lord,

  843. and believe that you're alone.

  844. And while we may cry out,

  845. O Lord,

  846. and believe that we're alone.

  847. That man is going to cry out,

  848. O Lord,

  849. from the cross,

  850. and he will be alone.

  851. The only one in history

  852. that God truly abandoned.

  853. But because of that,

  854. because of that,

  855. this promise is going to ensue

  856. of a complete cosmic renewal.

  857. Because of this death,

  858. all the injustice

  859. and hatred

  860. and cruelty,

  861. all of that stuff

  862. that you're railing against Habakkuk,

  863. all of that is going to be dealt with.

  864. And one day,

  865. justice will fill the earth again.

  866. And then the news of this

  867. is going to begin to spread.

  868. And it's going to go far and wide.

  869. And then people are going to start

  870. writing it down.

  871. In what language?

  872. Koine Greek,

  873. the common tongue.

  874. And then it's going to begin

  875. to be written down

  876. and formed into something

  877. that will be called the Bible.

  878. And then that's going to be

  879. translated into Latin.

  880. And then it's going to start

  881. to be translated

  882. into all of the various

  883. common tongues

  884. around the known world.

  885. And that book

  886. is going to become

  887. to date

  888. the most widely read book

  889. in the history

  890. of humanity.

  891. And that book

  892. is going to contain

  893. all things necessary

  894. for any human being,

  895. regardless of their background,

  896. regardless of their ethnicity,

  897. to be reconciled

  898. to the creator God

  899. of the universe.

  900. So yes, Habakkuk,

  901. I'll try to answer

  902. your question.

  903. But even if I laid

  904. all of it out for you,

  905. you wouldn't believe me.

  906. You wouldn't believe me.

  907. You wouldn't understand.

  908. But here's the thing, Habakkuk.

  909. It starts with exile.

  910. It's going to be hard.

  911. Trust me.

  912. Trust me.

  913. So this is the choice,

  914. I think,

  915. that we have to make

  916. on a daily basis.

  917. Because just like Habakkuk,

  918. I think that we live lives

  919. where there's a disconnect

  920. between what God has said

  921. and who he says he is

  922. and then what our lives look like

  923. on a daily basis.

  924. And it doesn't seem

  925. to fit together.

  926. Right?

  927. On the one hand,

  928. God promises to be our God,

  929. to work all things

  930. for our good,

  931. to never stop loving us.

  932. And yet,

  933. on the other hand,

  934. our lives are sometimes

  935. full of struggle

  936. and hardship

  937. and it seems like

  938. God is nowhere.

  939. So this core question

  940. is put to us

  941. just as it was him.

  942. Are you going to trust

  943. only what you see

  944. with your eyes?

  945. Or are you going to trust

  946. the words of God

  947. to shape your ultimate

  948. understanding of reality?

  949. Where do you put your faith?

  950. Do I trust that God's promises

  951. might be unfolding

  952. even in the midst

  953. of my pain?

  954. Paul saw the promise

  955. in the pain

  956. and the question

  957. is presented to us.

  958. Can we have eyes

  959. to see the promise

  960. unfolding

  961. even in the midst

  962. of our pain?

  963. The world's groaning

  964. in pain.

  965. You know,

  966. in our northeast congregation,

  967. our pediatrician,

  968. Dr. Reese,

  969. you know,

  970. Kristen Reese Hall,

  971. she's our boys pediatrician

  972. and she's a wonderful woman

  973. and wonderful doctor.

  974. But every so often

  975. we have to take our boys

  976. to see her

  977. and we have to break

  978. the news to them

  979. in the car

  980. that when we get there

  981. you're going to have

  982. to get a shot.

  983. And they freak out

  984. because that's what kids do,

  985. right?

  986. And then there ensues

  987. a kind of theological debate,

  988. right?

  989. Well,

  990. if Dr. Reese

  991. is all-knowing

  992. and if she's good

  993. and if she's loving

  994. and she wants the best

  995. for us

  996. then how

  997. when this random nurse

  998. comes in

  999. and sticks a piece

1000. of metal in my leg

  1001. why does she sit

  1002. idly by?

  1003. Why does she not

  1004. hear our cries?

  1005. Right?

1006. Why does she do nothing?

  1007. And we say

  1008. everybody can hear

  1009. your cries.

  1010. That's not the problem,

  1011. right?

  1012. And we say,

  1013. you know,

  1014. we could try

1015. to explain it to them

  1016. but they can't really

  1017. understand immunizations

  1018. and all that

  1019. because they're five,

  1020. right?

  1021. And seven.

1022. And so at the end

  1023. of the day

  1024. we say trust us.

  1025. Now this is nowhere

  1026. near the scale

  1027. that we're dealing

  1028. with in Habakkuk

  1029. but it's a,

  1030. it's at the core

1031. of it the same question,

  1032. right?

1033. Are you going to trust me

  1034. that this is ultimately

  1035. going to turn out

  1036. for your good?

1037. Are you going to trust

  1038. me with this?

  1039. You know,

  1040. some of you know

  1041. the story of,

  1042. you know,

  1043. my wife and I,

  1044. we met years ago

  1045. in 1999

  1046. and we got,

  1047. fell in love

  1048. and got engaged

  1049. and everything

  1050. was great

  1051. and then as we

  1052. got engaged

  1053. and started approaching

  1054. the wedding

  1055. I just began

  1056. to lock down

  1057. and I can't really

  1058. explain it

  1059. but essentially

1060. I can only describe it

1061. as a kind of profound

  1062. emotional,

  1063. spiritual,

  1064. psychological block

1065. where I just could not

  1066. move forward.

  1067. I was utterly terrified

  1068. and this resulted

  1069. in us having to

  1070. call off our engagement

  1071. and it was bad

  1072. because it was only

  1073. a few months

  1074. before the wedding

  1075. so we're talking

  1076. thousands and thousands

  1077. of dollars

  1078. of deposits lost,

  1079. trying to sell

  1080. bridesmaids dresses

  1081. on eBay,

  1082. you know,

  1083. the whole nine yards.

  1084. Laura was utterly

  1085. devastated,

  1086. you know,

  1087. I was so devastated

  1088. and depressed

  1089. that I started taking

  1090. antidepressants

  1091. and going to counseling

1092. and trying to figure out

  1093. what's wrong with me.

  1094. I felt like I was

  1095. a massive failure

  1096. and we were apart

  1097. for five years

1098. and much of that early time,

1099. first two or three years

  1100. was just wrestling

  1101. with God

  1102. over what happened,

  1103. what,

1104. I felt so called to this

1105. and she felt so called

  1106. to this

1107. and it all seemed right,

  1108. what happened to me?

  1109. You know,

  1110. and it's weird

  1111. when there's something

  1112. in your own soul

  1113. that you can't understand.

  1114. There's a part of you

  1115. that's doing something

  1116. that you can't even

  1117. make sense of.

  1118. You feel like

  1119. you've betrayed yourself,

  1120. at least I did.

  1121. And then through

  1122. this whole series

  1123. of events,

  1124. five years later,

  1125. we reconnect,

  1126. we realize we're more

  1127. in love than ever,

  1128. we get back together,

  1129. we get engaged,

  1130. we get married

  1131. and now we've been

  1132. married for ten years,

1133. we have three beautiful kids

1134. and I may be biased

1135. but I think we have

1136. one of the best marriages around.

  1137. I'm absolutely crazy

  1138. about her

1139. and she likes me okay

  1140. as well

  1141. and it works great.

  1142. And you know,

  1143. the funny thing

  1144. about that story is,

  1145. again,

  1146. it's just a small example,

  1147. it's nothing like Habakkuk,

  1148. but the funny thing

  1149. is that two things

  1150. are simultaneously true

  1151. that don't really

  1152. seem to fit together.

  1153. On the one hand,

  1154. would I wish that

  1155. on anyone?

  1156. Absolutely not.

  1157. Absolutely not.

1158. It was a dark night

  1159. of the soul

  1160. for both of us.

1161. And yet on the other hand,

  1162. when I ask her,

  1163. and this comes up

  1164. every now and then,

  1165. would you change anything?

  1166. If you could,

  1167. would you change it?

  1168. She says,

  1169. absolutely not.

  1170. And that's a weird

  1171. thing to say.

1172. But when we look at that,

1173. somehow that is a part

1174. of who we are as people

  1175. and it's a part,

  1176. I think,

  1177. of why our marriage

  1178. is so strong now.

  1179. Now,

  1180. if you had tried

1181. to tell me any of that

  1182. in 2002,

  1183. I would have laughed

1184. you out of my house.

  1185. I don't even want

  1186. to hear that.

  1187. But now,

  1188. looking back,

  1189. God was somehow

  1190. mysteriously at work.

  1191. Now,

  1192. I don't understand

  1193. everything about it.

  1194. I certainly have

  1195. a lot of questions.

  1196. I can't wait

1197. to ask God about it.

1198. A lot of other stuff

  1199. in life.

1200. But I can tell you

  1201. that we see

  1202. God's goodness in it.

  1203. In other words,

  1204. we're able to see

1205. the promise in the pain.

  1206. God's will unfolding

  1207. in some amazing way

1208. that we wouldn't even believe

1209. even if he told us.

  1210. Right?

1211. So the most amazing thing

  1212. about Habakkuk,

  1213. and this is where

  1214. we need to stop

  1215. for this week,

  1216. the most amazing thing

  1217. about Habakkuk

  1218. is that Habakkuk

  1219. doesn't have

  1220. any of this perspective

  1221. bear in mind.

  1222. He doesn't know

  1223. what's on the other

  1224. side of exile.

  1225. He doesn't know

  1226. anything about

  1227. the coming of Jesus.

  1228. He doesn't know

  1229. any of that.

  1230. All he knows

  1231. is he's staring exile

  1232. in the face

  1233. like looking down

1234. the barrel of a gun.

  1235. And yet,

  1236. even without

  1237. that perspective,

  1238. he trusts God.

  1239. And he falls

  1240. into his arms.

  1241. So how much more

  1242. then can we

  1243. who have the

  1244. perspective of

  1245. Jesus Christ

  1246. trust God?

  1247. even if things

  1248. are hard

  1249. and don't make sense.

  1250. Because we're able

1251. to look at the cross

  1252. and see the promise

  1253. in the pain

  1254. that the greatest

  1255. pain and suffering

  1256. ever experienced

  1257. by a human being

  1258. could produce

  1259. the greatest hope

  1260. the world has ever

  1261. known.

1262. In the name of the

  1263. Father and the Son

  1264. and the Holy Spirit.

  1265. Amen.
