  1. Well, welcome to Church of the Advent.

  2. Welcome back if you're returning.

  3. Especially welcome if this is your first time.

  4. I know many of us were potentially traveling this past week,

  5. and we still have a lot of people on the road,

  6. so we'll pray for their safe return and navigation

  7. through the inevitable traffic that they will face today.

  8. We celebrated Thanksgiving this past week in this country,

  9. and it's a time, hopefully, amid all of the travel and stress and logistics,

  10. where we had a moment to reflect on things we're thankful for.

  11. And that's an appropriate thing to be thinking about

  12. as we open God's Word together this evening,

  13. because we are coming to the end of a series

  14. that we started a few weeks back on stewardship.

  15. And gratitude is a very important, very central idea

  16. when you talk about stewardship,

  17. because this series has been an exploration

  18. of the truth that God actually owns everything.

  19. And anything that we have in our lives

  20. is something that has been entrusted to us by God

  21. to be used in ways that reflect His heart.

  22. And so we've been exploring that.

  23. We talked about what it means to steward the world and creation.

  24. We talked about what it means to steward our time,

  25. to steward our bodies,

  26. to steward our wealth and privilege.

  27. We've looked at this through a number of different lenses.

  28. And tonight, it culminates in a topic

  29. that I think draws a lot of these themes together.

  30. And so we're going to draw together a lot of the things

  31. that we've talked about over the last few weeks.

  32. We see this realm of stewardship

  33. in 1 Peter 4, verse 10,

    1 Peter 4:10

  34. which is going to be our focus.

  35. Peter says this,

  36. As each has received a gift,

  37. use it to serve one another

  38. as good stewards of God's varied grace.

  39. So this is our final topic of stewardship,

  40. the stewardship of grace.

  41. And we'll see three things looking at 1 Peter 4, 7 through 10.

  42. We'll see first, what does this mean?

  43. What does it mean to be a steward of grace?

  44. It's a little more esoteric than wealth or time.

  45. What does it mean?

  46. Why is it so difficult to do?

  47. And then lastly, how do we do it well?

  48. What does faithful stewardship look like

  49. when it comes to grace?

  50. Let's pray.

  51. Our Father, thank you.

  52. As we have perhaps said thank you

  53. for many things this week,

  54. chiefly we thank you

  55. for your presence among us,

  56. that we can gather in a building like this

  57. on a Sunday night

  58. and know that regardless of how distracted

  59. or torn or spread thin we might feel,

  60. that you are fully present here.

  61. Lord, we crave and we hunger for your voice.

  62. We thirst for your word.

  63. We pray that you would speak to us, Lord.

  64. We pray this in your Son's holy name.

  65. Amen.

  66. So stewardship of grace,

  67. what does that even mean?

  68. 1 Peter 4, chapter 4, verses 7 through 10

  69. is a summary passage.

  70. It's summarizing the Christian life.

  71. This book is about Christians.

  72. It's a letter from Peter to Christians

  73. who were living in the diaspora,

  74. the dispersed body of Christ,

  75. living all around the known world

  76. in places that are either indifferent

  77. or maybe even hostile to the Christian faith.

  78. And this is a pastoral letter of encouragement.

  79. This is how you should live.

  80. And he's laid out the gospel,

  81. the beauty of our salvation in Jesus.

  82. He's then talked about what it means

  83. to face suffering

  84. and to grow up into salvation.

  85. And now as we get to chapter 4,

  86. he's giving us a vision of the Christian life.

  87. Verse 7 says,

  88. the end of all things is near.

  89. In other words, he's saying,

  90. until Jesus comes again,

  91. this is how we should live.

  92. And then he lays it out.

  93. And he says that above all,

  94. Christians must love one another.

  95. We must love one another.

  96. What's important to note is that

  97. when we think of love,

  98. we think of a feeling.

  99. Like I feel love for my wife,

  100. for my kids, or my friends.

  101. But when he talks about love,

  102. he's talking about something that is active,

  103. a verb.

  104. Love one another.

  105. And then he defines what that means.

  106. Okay, what does that love look like,

  107. expressed?

  108. And he gives us two things.

  109. Show hospitality,

  110. which we've talked about a number of times

  111. in our church.

  112. And then the second thing,

  113. is he says that we are to use

  114. the gifts of grace that we've been given

  115. to serve one another

  116. as good stewards of God's varied grace.

  117. So hospitality and then stewardship of grace.

  118. And I think the two are connected.

  119. I'll show you a little bit later

  120. why I think hospitality,

  121. how that figures in here.

  122. But what I want to talk about now

  123. is the fact that when we talk about God's grace

  124. and stewarding that grace,

  125. we're not just talking about the grace

  126. that enables us to be saved.

  127. God's grace that comes through Jesus

  128. that saves sinners and reconciles them to God.

  129. That's the beginning,

  130. but there's more to it.

  131. God's grace is actually

  132. that which enables us to grow

  133. and to mature

  134. and the term is to be sanctified,

  135. to become more like Jesus.

  136. His grace coming into our lives

  137. is what enables that to happen

  138. in the power of the Spirit.

  139. And so what Peter is saying

  140. is that when God

  141. pours his grace into his church,

  142. he does it through

  143. individual Christians.

  144. He pours his grace through us

  145. into one another's lives.

  146. We're all made stewards of this grace.

  147. And that happens in the form of gifts,

  148. spiritual gifts.

  149. So if you're a follower of Jesus,

  150. if you've been baptized,

  151. you have spiritual gifts.

  152. You are in many ways,

  153. and these gifts in you

  154. are like channels of grace.

  155. Or to use a different image,

  156. when Jesus wants to shine

  157. the light of his presence

  158. into his church,

  159. just as a light shines through a prism

  160. and white light will be refracted

  161. into all manner of hue,

  162. so Jesus shines the light of his presence

  163. through his church.

  164. And each person is like a facet

  165. of that prism.

  166. And that light shines

  167. in a slightly different hue.

  168. So when God wants to shine his grace,

  169. pour his grace,

  170. it happens through our spiritual gifts.

  171. And Peter speaks in generalities.

  172. He says, you know,

  173. there's essentially two categories of gifts.

  174. He says there are those who speak,

  175. speaking gifts,

  176. and those who serve,

  177. serving gifts.

  178. And they work together.

  179. If you look at other places

  180. like Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  181. or 1 Corinthians chapter 12,

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  182. and 13 and 14,

  183. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  184. you see some of the more specific gifts

  185. listed out.

  186. These aren't exhaustive lists,

  187. but they give us some specific examples

  188. of what spiritual gifts

  189. we're talking about.

  190. So speaking gifts might include

  191. prophecy,

  192. right,

  193. applying God's word

  194. in ways that pierce hearts

  195. and expose sin.

  196. That's a speaking gift.

  197. You might have a gift of teaching,

  198. or of exhortation.

  199. Exhortation is sort of strong encouragement,

  200. or encouragement,

  201. right?

  202. These are speaking gifts.

  203. Right alongside those,

  204. there are serving gifts,

  205. like service,

  206. like healing,

  207. like giving.

  208. We're all called to give,

  209. but some people are extraordinarily gifted.

  210. They're extraordinarily generous,

  211. and their gifts bear much fruit.

  212. It's a spiritual gift.

  213. The gift of mercy.

  214. These are service-oriented gifts.

  215. But the point that I want to dwell on with you

  216. for just a few minutes

  217. is this,

  218. that God has designed His community,

  219. communities like ours,

  220. to be interdependent,

  221. where each person

  222. both needs and is needed.

  223. Interdependent communities.

  224. And being a loving community

  225. means being an interdependent community.

  226. That's what Peter's saying.

  227. So there's a couple of implications

  228. just to push this

  229. into the realm of our lives

  230. a little deeper.

  231. First implication is this.

  232. You need other Christians in your life.

  233. You need Christians in your life.

  234. And I'm not just talking about

  235. Christians' friends

  236. that you see once or twice a week.

  237. I'm talking about spiritual friendships.

  238. People who,

  239. with whom you have

  240. an explicit understanding

  241. that you desire

  242. to be used by God

  243. in their life.

  244. And you desire them

  245. to be used in your life

  246. to grow.

  247. That you have committed to

  248. not just being friends

  249. but seeking

  250. one another's growth

  251. and maturity

  252. in Christ.

  253. You need those kind of people

  254. in your life.

  255. And if what Peter says

  256. is true,

  257. it means that as we read

  258. over the list of spiritual gifts,

  259. normally we read

  260. over the list of spiritual gifts

  261. and the main question

  262. at least in my mind is

  263. I wonder which ones I have.

  264. And that's kind of human nature.

  265. Maybe I have this.

  266. Maybe I have this.

  267. And that's really important.

  268. We'll talk about that

  269. in just a little while.

  270. But there's another way

  271. to read the list of gifts.

  272. And that is

  273. it's a list of needs.

  274. It's a list of things

  275. that I need.

  276. Right?

  277. So this means that

  278. as I look down the list

  279. of spiritual gifts,

  280. I realize

  281. I need people

  282. to teach me

  283. things that I don't know.

  284. I need people

  285. with the gift of teaching

  286. in my life.

  287. I need people

  288. with the gift of wisdom

  289. to share wisdom

  290. that I may lack.

  291. I need people

  292. with the gift of prophecy

  293. who can speak prophetically

  294. into my life

  295. and pierce my heart

  296. and expose sin.

  297. I need people

  298. to exhort me

  299. at times.

  300. To encourage me

  301. at times.

  302. I need people

  303. sometimes to serve me.

  304. to pray for me

  305. to be healed.

  306. To show me mercy.

  307. It's a list of needs.

  308. Does that make you

  309. uncomfortable at all?

  310. Just the idea

  311. that you would need

  312. things like that

  313. from people.

  314. And I think

  315. for most of us

  316. it's hard to really admit.

  317. To acknowledge,

  318. yeah,

  319. there are times

  320. when I just don't know.

  321. There are times

  322. when I have no idea

  323. what to do.

  324. There are times

  325. when I need to be called out.

  326. There are times

  327. when I need to be

  328. taken care of.

  329. There are times

  330. when I need people

  331. to pray for my healing.

  332. I think it's human nature

  333. and especially

  334. in our culture

  335. to spend most of our time

  336. convincing people

  337. that we don't need anything.

  338. You know,

  339. most of my time

  340. I want people to know

  341. that I've kind of

  342. got it together.

  343. That I'm kind of good.

  344. I don't,

  345. you're,

  346. you know,

  347. I don't really need anything.

  348. Things are fine

  349. in my life.

  350. And I think

  351. that's because

  352. we live in a culture

  353. that rewards autonomy

  354. and rewards self-sufficiency.

  355. I mean,

  356. what does it mean

  357. to be an adult

  358. in our culture?

  359. A lot of people

  360. in this room

  361. are,

  362. you know,

  363. sort of transitioning

  364. or kind of

  365. in what might be called

  366. early adulthood.

  367. What does that mean?

  368. I mean,

  369. what's the goal

  370. of being an adult?

  371. What is adulting

  372. all about?

  373. It's self-sufficiency,

  374. isn't it?

  375. I mean,

  376. isn't being an adult

  377. really just not needing

  378. anything anymore?

  379. You no longer

  380. need parental support.

  381. You no longer,

  382. you kind of can do it

  383. all yourself.

  384. I mean,

  385. that's essentially,

  386. I think,

  387. how we think about it.

  388. So the idea

  389. that I would need anything

  390. is pretty uncomfortable.

  391. But what we need

  392. to understand

  393. is that Peter

  394. is totally shattering

  395. that whole idea

  396. of self-sufficiency.

  397. And one implication

  398. of what he's saying

  399. is unless there are

  400. other believers

  401. pouring grace

  402. into your life,

  403. your growth

  404. is going to be stunted.

  405. It's going to be stunted.

  406. So that's the first thing.

  407. You need other Christians

  408. in your life.

  409. The second point

  410. I want to make

  411. is that other Christians

  412. need you

  413. in their life.

  414. You know,

  415. other Christians

  416. need you

  417. in their life.

  418. There are specific ways

  419. that God's,

  420. if you're here

  421. and you're a Christian,

  422. there are specific ways

  423. that God's grace

  424. is meant to flow

  425. through you,

  426. through your personality,

  427. through your quirks,

  428. all the things

  429. that make you you.

  430. So there are needs

  431. in this church

  432. that only you

  433. are able to meet.

  434. And there are hands

  435. that only you

  436. can hold

  437. and spaces

  438. and roles

  439. that only you

  440. can fill.

  441. And it's very important

  442. to understand that,

  443. that when you look

  444. around this room,

  445. every single person

  446. who's here,

  447. if you're here,

  448. chances are

  449. you're not just

  450. randomly here,

  451. that you're here

  452. because God

  453. has given you

  454. as a gift,

  455. that he looked

  456. at the church

  457. and saw the needs

  458. and said,

  459. this person

  460. would fit very well

  461. here.

  462. They have gifts

  463. that are needed

  464. by this community.

  465. There are no accidents

  466. in God's kingdom.

  467. So we need other Christians

  468. in our lives,

  469. other Christians need us

  470. in their lives.

  471. And this is what it means

  472. to be a steward

  473. of God's grace.

  474. God's grace pours

  475. through us

  476. into one another's lives.

  477. Now,

  478. it's all well and good,

  479. nice and clear.

  480. Why is it so hard to do?

  481. What is the major challenge?

  482. And I think that there

  483. are a number of ways

  484. we could go,

  485. a number of reasons

  486. why it's hard,

  487. but I just really want

  488. to focus on what I think

  489. is a core challenge

  490. of interdependence

  491. and why you don't often

  492. see this happening

  493. well in churches.

  494. And that's this fact,

  495. that the whole idea

  496. that we need other people

  497. to pour grace

  498. into our lives,

  499. and more to the point,

  500. the whole idea

  501. that we need to change

  502. or that we need to grow

  503. or that we need to transform

  504. runs completely

  505. against our culture.

  506. We live in a culture

  507. that has been termed

  508. more and more

  509. the age of authenticity.

  510. I don't know

  511. if you've heard this term,

  512. but here's what Jonathan Grant,

  513. here's how he defines it.

  514. Modern authenticity

  515. encourages us

  516. to create our own beliefs

  517. and morality.

  518. The only rule being

  519. that they must resonate

  520. with who we feel

  521. we really are.

  522. The worst thing we can do

  523. is to conform

  524. to some moral code

  525. that is imposed on us

  526. from the outside,

  527. by society,

  528. our parents,

  529. the church,

  530. or whoever else.

  531. It is deemed

  532. to be self-evident

  533. that any such imposition

  534. would undermine

  535. our unique identity.

  536. So this is the culture

  537. that we live in,

  538. that I have a moral obligation

  539. to be true

  540. to what I feel

  541. on the inside

  542. and to express that,

  543. and the less polluted

  544. it is by outside influence,

  545. the more authentic

  546. and the more true

  547. it is.

  548. So why would I let you

  549. speak into my life

  550. and pollute

  551. my sense of self?

  552. I need to keep myself

  553. clear of all of that,

  554. right?

  555. And think about

  556. the stories that we tell,

  557. the movies that come out

  558. these days.

  559. I mean,

  560. really,

  561. the only remaining

  562. hero narrative

  563. in our culture

  564. is the narrative

  565. of the person

  566. who has the courage

  567. to be themselves

  568. no matter what.

  569. You know,

  570. that's the hero story

  571. that we like to tell.

  572. I mean,

  573. virtually every movie

  574. that I watched

  575. with my kids

  576. over Thanksgiving

  577. was that story.

  578. Just swap out

  579. different animals

  580. or creatures,

  581. but that's essentially

  582. the story that was being told

  583. over and over and over.

  584. And so one of the worst crimes

  585. that you can possibly commit

  586. in our culture

  587. is to question

  588. or challenge

  589. someone else's choices.

  590. That is the unpardonable sin

  591. in our culture

  592. is to challenge

  593. or question

  594. or push back

  595. somebody else's

  596. lifestyle choices.

  597. You just don't do it.

  598. There was a Barna study

  599. that came out

  600. where they made this statement

  601. and they wanted people

  602. to agree or disagree.

  603. And here's the statement.

  604. People should not criticize

  605. someone else's

  606. lifestyle choices.

  607. Eighty-nine percent

  608. of U.S. adults

  609. agreed with that.

  610. Right?

  611. So the overwhelming

  612. majority of people

  613. would agree with that statement.

  614. You should not ever

  615. criticize other people's

  616. lifestyle choices.

  617. That's not surprising.

  618. What may be a little

  619. more surprising

  620. is that 76%

  621. of Christians

  622. agreed with that.

  623. Right?

  624. So the vast majority

  625. of people,

  626. both secular

  627. and Christian,

  628. agree with that statement.

  629. And so this sentiment

  630. that love means,

  631. you know,

  632. if you really love someone,

  633. you should affirm them

  634. exactly as they are,

  635. that's how the thinking goes.

  636. That's what love

  637. looks like in our culture.

  638. And so what we need to see

  639. is that when you look

  640. at 1 Peter 4

  641. and when you compare

  642. the two,

  643. you realize that we are

  644. dealing with two

  645. completely opposite

  646. definitions of love.

  647. They're two

  648. diametrically opposed

  649. ways of defining love

  650. and they coexist.

  651. Right?

  652. The culture of authenticity

  653. says,

  654. this is who I am

  655. and if you truly love me,

  656. then you will affirm

  657. and accept me

  658. exactly as I am.

  659. That's what love means.

  660. 1 Peter,

  661. by contrast,

  662. says,

  663. this is who I am

  664. and if you truly love me,

  665. you will use your gifts

  666. of grace

  667. to speak into my life,

  668. to challenge me,

  669. to expose sin,

  670. to exhort me,

  671. to encourage me

  672. so that I can grow

  673. and transform

  674. and mature

  675. and become more

  676. like Jesus.

  677. You see,

  678. they could not be

  679. more opposite

  680. one another.

  681. And so someone,

  682. you know,

  683. I know you might be

  684. hearing this

  685. and thinking,

  686. what's the big deal?

  687. Well,

  688. the thing is,

  689. as a result,

  690. the church

  691. is deeply confused

  692. over what it means

  693. to love people well.

  694. I think right here

  695. in our church,

  696. there's a lot of confusion.

  697. I think there are

  698. a lot of people

  699. who really want

  700. to be loving,

  701. but I think that

  702. we're very confused

  703. as to what that

  704. actually looks like

  705. on the ground.

  706. So you have someone

  707. making decisions

  708. and,

  709. I don't know,

  710. they're making decisions

  711. that are hurting

  712. their relationship

  713. with God

  714. and hurting

  715. their relationships

  716. with other people

  717. and maybe even

  718. hurting themselves.

  719. That's essentially

  720. what sin is.

  721. It's doing things

  722. that hurt those relationships.

  723. Right?

  724. And they're making

  725. these decisions

  726. and,

  727. you know,

  728. you see this

  729. from time to time

  730. where there'll be

  731. somebody making

  732. these decisions

  733. and they're literally

  734. surrounded by Christians.

  735. They're surrounded

  736. by Christians.

  737. You know,

  738. they're in small groups

  739. and,

  740. you know,

  741. and all of the people

  742. around them

  743. are concerned.

  744. And all of those people

  745. are talking to one another

  746. about how concerned

  747. they are,

  748. but nobody dares

  749. say anything

  750. to the person

  751. in question.

  752. And so,

  753. and then,

  754. you know,

  755. and you say,

  756. well,

  757. you know,

  758. don't you think

  759. you should say something

  760. if you're so concerned?

  761. Shouldn't you maybe

  762. sit down

  763. and have a conversation

  764. and people say,

  765. well,

  766. you know,

  767. I just really think

  768. what they need is,

  769. I just want to be

  770. supportive right now.

  771. Well,

  772. I just don't know

  773. if it's my place.

  774. You know,

  775. I just think

  776. that they need to know

  777. that they're loved

  778. no matter what.

  779. And on it goes.

  780. And,

  781. and I think that

  782. all of this reflects

  783. a deep confusion

  784. about what love

  785. actually looks like.

  786. It reflects actually

  787. the culture of authenticity.

  788. Loving someone,

  789. supporting them

  790. means never questioning them.

  791. So someone says,

  792. okay,

  793. well,

  794. okay,

  795. I get that,

  796. but what's the big deal?

  797. And maybe you're here

  798. and you're listening

  799. and you're not really sure

  800. if you buy the whole

  801. grace,

  802. Jesus,

  803. gospel thing.

  804. And you say,

  805. well,

  806. if I'm not a Christian,

  807. then what does it matter?

  808. And I would say,

  809. even if you don't buy

  810. all of that,

  811. it still doesn't work.

  812. There's still a serious flaw

  813. with this way

  814. of thinking about relationships.

  815. And here's the flaw.

  816. Here's the problem

  817. with the culture of authenticity.

  818. When you say,

  819. this is who I am,

  820. you must affirm

  821. and accept me

  822. exactly as I am.

  823. When that's what you say

  824. to people,

  825. what you really have

  826. is openness

  827. without vulnerability.

  828. You have openness

  829. without vulnerability.

  830. And that makes

  831. real relationships

  832. completely impossible.

  833. Because you're being open,

  834. you're saying,

  835. this is who I am,

  836. I'm being totally honest

  837. about who I am.

  838. But you're not allowing

  839. that person

  840. to have any meaningful

  841. impact

  842. on your life.

  843. And that's the

  844. vulnerability piece.

  845. And if you're open

  846. and yet you're not vulnerable,

  847. it's not openness

  848. that makes relationships

  849. possible,

  850. real relationships,

  851. it's vulnerability.

  852. Because vulnerability

  853. is the core

  854. of intimacy.

  855. And so you can be open,

  856. but if you're not vulnerable,

  857. there's no chance

  858. for intimacy.

  859. And so it may feel

  860. like you're intimate,

  861. but if there's no possibility

  862. that anybody can actually

  863. impact you

  864. or change you,

  865. then there's really

  866. no intimacy.

  867. You're really not

  868. asking for a friend,

  869. you're asking for a yes man,

  870. you're asking for somebody

  871. to come along

  872. and rubber stamp

  873. your life.

  874. And so instead of

  875. building a relationship

  876. on intimacy,

  877. you're actually building

  878. it on an ultimatum.

  879. And ultimatums

  880. really aren't good

  881. for relationships.

  882. It doesn't work.

  883. Right?

  884. So I think

  885. this is one reason

  886. why so many people

  887. these days,

  888. especially in a place

  889. like D.C.

  890. where this way of thinking

  891. is so prevalent,

  892. there's a lot of loneliness

  893. out there.

  894. A lot of people

  895. with a lot of friends

  896. who are still lonely.

  897. And I think part of it

  898. is because we like

  899. the idea of openness,

  900. but we don't like

  901. the idea of vulnerability.

  902. And so we're alone.

  903. There's no intimacy there.

  904. And this attitude,

  905. by the way,

  906. not only makes

  907. relationships

  908. with other people

  909. impossible,

  910. but if you come to God

  911. and you say,

  912. well, I believe that God

  913. is a God of love,

  914. and I believe that

  915. if God is truly loving,

  916. then God should accept me

  917. and affirm me

  918. exactly as I am.

  919. You're not going to have

  920. a relationship

  921. with any God

  922. other than the God

  923. of your own imagination.

  924. It makes a relationship

  925. with God utterly impossible.

  926. So the gospel offers us

  927. a better way,

  928. and that's what we're going

  929. to spend the rest

  930. of our time looking at.

  931. How to be faithful

  932. as stewards of grace,

  933. and that begins

  934. with understanding

  935. the gospel.

  936. It begins with,

  937. first thing we have to do

  938. to be stewards of grace

  939. is to recognize

  940. that we need grace.

  941. Right?

  942. So before I pour grace

  943. into the lives of others,

  944. I need it myself.

  945. By the way,

  946. every week,

  947. this is why

  948. when we come up

  949. for communion,

  950. we come up

  951. and say Dan

  952. is celebrating communion.

  953. The first thing Dan does

  954. after he sits everybody down

  955. is he takes a bite

  956. of the bread himself,

  957. and then he takes

  958. a drink from the cup,

  959. and then he'll give me,

  960. if I'm helping,

  961. assisting with distribution,

  962. he will give me

  963. the bread and the wine,

  964. and then we give it

  965. to the chalice bearers,

  966. and then we come

  967. and we begin to give it

  968. to all of you.

  969. Why?

  970. It's because we need

  971. to receive before we can give.

  972. That's what that's meant

  973. to model.

  974. We're only able to give

  975. what we've received.

  976. And so the first thing

  977. we need to do

  978. is to recognize

  979. that we need grace.

  980. You know,

  981. Jesus said in the Gospels,

  982. those who are well

  983. have no need

  984. for a physician.

  985. I came to call

  986. not the righteous,

  987. but sinners.

  988. So in order to receive

  989. God's grace,

  990. you have to recognize

  991. that you need it.

  992. You have to ask for it.

  993. God's grace,

  994. which means,

  995. first of all,

  996. admitting that we're

  997. hopelessly addicted

  998. to self and idols,

  999. that we are powerless

1000. over sin in our lives.

1001. It means coming to Jesus

1002. and admitting that we need

  1003. the free grace

  1004. that he offers

1005. to become free and whole.

  1006. And then it means

  1007. turning our will

1008. and our lives over to him,

  1009. saying,

  1010. please take this,

  1011. take me,

  1012. and change me,

  1013. transform me.

  1014. And you know,

  1015. that's what happens.

  1016. It's essentially giving Jesus

  1017. a blank check

1018. to the rest of your life

  1019. and saying,

  1020. here's a blank check.

1021. Whatever you call me to do

  1022. from this point forward,

  1023. I will do it.

  1024. I have no idea

1025. what that's going to be,

1026. but I'm saying yes now.

  1027. So whatever it is

1028. that comes down the road,

  1029. I say yes.

  1030. That's what it means.

1031. And you know that Jesus

  1032. is going to then

1033. begin to work in your life

1034. to change and to transform you,

  1035. using other people

  1036. to do that.

1037. But we have to receive

  1038. God's grace.

1039. And then once that happens,

1040. then we have to recognize

  1041. the purpose of grace

  1042. to begin with.

  1043. That ultimately,

1044. this is not about us.

  1045. And Peter makes this

  1046. abundantly clear.

  1047. Who's it about?

  1048. Well, he says,

1049. in order that in everything,

  1050. God might be glorified

  1051. through Jesus.

  1052. To him belong glory

  1053. and dominion

  1054. forever and ever.

  1055. Amen.

  1056. So that's why he's saying

  1057. faithful stewards of grace,

  1058. you know,

  1059. when you speak,

  1060. speak oracles of God.

  1061. When you serve,

  1062. serve with the strength

  1063. that God provides.

  1064. Lest you ever,

  1065. for a moment,

  1066. forget and think

  1067. that it's about you.

  1068. Because in fact,

  1069. it's not.

  1070. You know,

  1071. the essence of sin

  1072. is essentially

  1073. that we're all addicted

  1074. to self.

1075. We want it to be about us.

1076. We want it to be about us.

  1077. We're kind of self-aholics,

  1078. you know.

  1079. That's our addiction.

  1080. And Peter says,

  1081. no,

  1082. it's not about you.

1083. And so when you do

  1084. bear fruit

  1085. and when you are

  1086. stewarding grace

1087. and you see other people

  1088. grow as a result,

  1089. don't take credit.

  1090. Recognize that it's God

  1091. who provides grace.

  1092. That we're merely

  1093. the stewards.

  1094. Right?

1095. So it's not about you.

  1096. Recognize the purpose

  1097. is to glorify God.

1098. So the first couple of things,

1099. to be stewards of grace,

  1100. we recognize

  1101. that we need grace.

  1102. We recognize

  1103. the purpose of grace

  1104. to glorify God.

  1105. Number three,

  1106. recognize and use

1107. your own gifts of grace.

  1108. recognize and use

  1109. your gifts.

  1110. I don't know

  1111. what they are.

  1112. But you can discover

  1113. what they are.

  1114. You know,

  1115. there are lots of

  1116. inventories out there

  1117. that you can take

1118. to discern your spiritual gifts.

1119. We did one a year ago

1120. when we had a retreat

  1121. on this topic

  1122. for this very reason.

  1123. But by far,

  1124. a better way

  1125. is to sit down

  1126. with people,

  1127. Christian brothers and sisters

  1128. who know you,

1129. and to begin to ask them

  1130. to prayerfully help you

1131. discern what your gifts are.

  1132. You know,

1133. where do you bear fruit?

  1134. Where,

  1135. when you're doing

  1136. your thing,

1137. where do you see fruit

  1138. and growth

  1139. and flourishing happen?

  1140. Where do your

  1141. natural inclinations

  1142. meet fruitfulness

  1143. when you're being

  1144. faithful to Jesus?

  1145. And prayerfully

  1146. discern what those are.

  1147. And then,

  1148. once you begin

  1149. to know them,

  1150. use them.

  1151. That's the key.

1152. You have to use them.

1153. They're meant to be used

1154. for the life of the church.

  1155. Sometimes,

  1156. using your gifts,

  1157. sometimes that means

1158. that you're going to get

  1159. to serve people

  1160. and take them food

  1161. and encourage them

  1162. and pray for them

  1163. to heal

1164. and pat them on the back

1165. and help them get up

1166. and say it's going to be okay

  1167. and dust them off

1168. and help them down the road.

  1169. Sometimes, though,

  1170. it's going to mean

  1171. having hard conversations.

  1172. Sometimes,

  1173. using your gifts

  1174. and being a faithful

  1175. steward of grace

  1176. means that you have

  1177. to sit down

1178. and you have to speak

  1179. prophetically

  1180. into somebody's life.

1181. You have to exhort them

  1182. in things that they

  1183. don't want to hear.

  1184. You have to challenge

  1185. and question

  1186. and nobody enjoys

  1187. those conversations.

1188. But I just want to say

1189. this as strongly as I can.

  1190. Don't avoid

  1191. hard conversations.

1192. If we are a church

  1193. that avoids hard conversations,

  1194. we will not be

  1195. stewarding grace.

1196. Our growth will be stunted.

  1197. I'll give a big caveat.

  1198. I can't believe

  1199. I'm quoting Tim Ferriss,

  1200. but here it goes.

  1201. Sort of a self-styled guru.

  1202. Somebody described him

  1203. the Tony Robbins

  1204. for people under 45

  1205. and I guess

  1206. that's probably true.

  1207. He says,

  1208. a person's success in life

  1209. can usually be measured

  1210. by the number

  1211. of uncomfortable conversations

1212. he or she is willing to have.

  1213. That's a pretty bold statement

1214. because I think most of us

  1215. avoid hard conversations.

1216. We just put them off,

  1217. put them off,

  1218. put them off,

  1219. put them off,

  1220. and avoid them altogether.

  1221. And he says,

  1222. a person's success

  1223. hinges largely

  1224. on their willingness

  1225. to do that.

  1226. I think 1 Peter 4

  1227. would amend that slightly

  1228. to say the sincerity

  1229. of a person's love

  1230. is measured largely

  1231. by their willingness

  1232. to have hard conversations.

  1233. You know,

  1234. Proverbs 27.6,

  1235. I love it.

  1236. It says,

  1237. faithful are the wounds

  1238. of a friend,

  1239. profuse are the kisses

  1240. of an enemy.

  1241. And that is absolutely

  1242. brilliant wisdom.

  1243. Faithful are the wounds

  1244. of a friend.

  1245. You know,

  1246. faithful friends

  1247. are friends

  1248. who are willing

  1249. to say things

  1250. that might wound you

  1251. or offend you

  1252. or hurt you.

  1253. That's what love

  1254. looks like, right?

  1255. So faithful friends

  1256. might say,

1257. I notice that when we go out,

1258. every time we go out,

  1259. you know,

1260. we all have a couple of drinks

  1261. and then you just

1262. don't ever seem to stop.

  1263. You have three,

  1264. four, five,

  1265. and I never,

  1266. I don't know what happens

  1267. to you after that.

  1268. We all go home,

1269. but you always kind of stay out.

  1270. What's going on?

  1271. Faithful friends say,

  1272. you know,

  1273. ever since you've been

  1274. dating that person,

1275. you've just started to change

  1276. and you're more distant

  1277. and I'm just,

  1278. you know,

1279. I'm not seeing you around as much

  1280. and what's going on?

  1281. You know,

  1282. that's a faithful friend

  1283. is somebody who's willing

1284. to sit down and say,

  1285. you know,

1286. I'm not sure this decision

1287. is having the best influence

  1288. on your family.

  1289. You're on the road a lot.

  1290. You and your wife

  1291. seem really distant.

1292. Do you guys get any time together?

  1293. I'm concerned.

1294. Can we talk about it?

  1295. Notice that that

  1296. it's not saying,

  1297. I'm condemning your choices.

1298. It's not coming at somebody

1299. with an attitude of condemnation.

  1300. Remember,

  1301. the overarching ethic

  1302. is one of love.

  1303. Right?

1304. But what this does look like

  1305. is the posture

  1306. that you should have

  1307. is not condemnation,

  1308. but it is curiosity.

  1309. I'm curious.

  1310. Tell me more.

  1311. Help me understand

  1312. this decision

1313. because there are a lot of people

  1314. that are concerned

  1315. about this decision.

1316. Can you help me understand

  1317. your thinking?

  1318. How does this decision

  1319. resonate with your relationship

  1320. with Jesus?

  1321. Do you feel like

  1322. your relationship with Jesus

  1323. is stronger

1324. as a result of this?

  1325. If not,

1326. then why are you doing it?

  1327. That's curiosity.

  1328. It's just,

  1329. help me understand.

  1330. Let me in.

1331. Do we have vulnerability or not?

1332. That's what it looks like.

  1333. And by the way,

  1334. you're also being curious

  1335. because,

  1336. remember,

  1337. it's not about you.

  1338. It's about how God

  1339. might use this relationship.

  1340. It's how God

  1341. has designed us

  1342. to be faithful stewards

  1343. of grace.

  1344. And so,

  1345. if God's grace

  1346. is trying to break

  1347. into this person's life,

  1348. you're curious.

1349. How's that going to happen?

  1350. What is God doing

  1351. in you right now?

1352. Can we talk about that?

  1353. Faithful are the wounds

  1354. of a friend.

1355. This is going to hurt,

  1356. but it's because I love you

  1357. and because God's grace

1358. is trying to be poured

  1359. into your life.

  1360. What's that look like?

  1361. Profuse are the kisses

  1362. of an enemy.

  1363. If all someone does

  1364. is affirm you

  1365. and build you up

  1366. and no matter what,

1367. I just want you to be happy

1368. and you do what you think

  1369. is best

1370. and you're going to make

  1371. great decisions

  1372. and I'm not,

  1373. that's not really a friend,

  1374. right?

  1375. Because that's not

  1376. actually loving you.

  1377. If I'm just affirming,

  1378. affirming,

  1379. affirming,

  1380. affirming,

1381. it's not really about you,

  1382. I'm loving me

  1383. because I don't want

1384. to have to stress about it,

  1385. I don't want to have

  1386. to think about it,

  1387. I don't want to lose sleep

  1388. over it,

  1389. I've got too much

1390. going on in my life,

  1391. I don't have the time

  1392. and energy to really

1393. get into this with you.

  1394. So hey,

1395. just whatever makes you happy,

  1396. I've got this thing

  1397. over here.

  1398. That's not friendship.

  1399. Profuse are the kisses

  1400. of an enemy.

  1401. By the way,

  1402. I said earlier,

  1403. I think there's a connection

  1404. with hospitality.

  1405. I think there's no coincidence

  1406. here that Peter says

  1407. show hospitality

  1408. and then steward

  1409. your spiritual gifts,

  1410. which means sometimes,

  1411. many times,

  1412. having hard conversations

  1413. like this.

  1414. Because these kinds

  1415. of conversations

  1416. should always take place

  1417. in the context

  1418. of hospitality,

  1419. right?

1420. If you're going to have

  1421. a conversation like this

  1422. with somebody,

1423. it should be in your living room,

  1424. you know,

  1425. with some food

  1426. that you've prepared,

  1427. right?

  1428. That's where this is

  1429. meant to happen,

  1430. that's where loving

  1431. relationships play out.

  1432. So you need to

  1433. recognize your gifts

  1434. and use them,

  1435. even if it means

  1436. doing uncomfortable things,

  1437. because you actually

  1438. love your brothers

  1439. and sisters.

  1440. And then lastly,

  1441. number four,

  1442. recognize grace

1443. when it comes to you.

  1444. Right?

1445. So don't just be willing

1446. to have the hard conversations,

  1447. receive them

  1448. when they come

  1449. into your life.

  1450. You know,

  1451. sometimes grace comes

  1452. in the form

  1453. of gentle encouragement,

  1454. praise God,

  1455. wonderful times.

  1456. But other times,

1457. it comes in the form

  1458. of a hard conversation,

  1459. somebody being willing

  1460. to challenge you.

  1461. And you know,

  1462. over the years,

1463. I've seen this play out

1464. again and again and again.

  1465. Somebody will come

  1466. into our community

  1467. and they make friends

  1468. and they're great

1469. and for maybe several years,

  1470. they're active

  1471. and involved

1472. and every time you ask them

  1473. how's it going,

  1474. they say,

  1475. oh, everything's great,

  1476. totally fine.

  1477. I'm totally fine,

  1478. everything's great

  1479. and they're like a star.

  1480. You know,

1481. they just got it all together.

  1482. And then something happens,

  1483. crisis,

  1484. bottom drops out

1485. and all of a sudden,

  1486. their sin gets exposed,

  1487. their brokenness gets exposed,

  1488. the need gets exposed,

1489. the fact that they don't

  1490. have it all together

  1491. and they're actually

  1492. kind of a mess,

  1493. all that comes out

1494. and maybe a few people

  1495. learn about it,

  1496. right?

  1497. And in that moment,

  1498. when you're sitting there

1499. and all of a sudden,

  1500. you're just,

1501. your crap is just out there,

  1502. every single human being

  1503. on the planet

1504. wants to run and hide.

1505. Ever since Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1506. that's what human beings

  1507. have been doing.

1508. The moment we get caught,

1509. the moment God comes along

  1510. and says,

1511. what have you been doing?

1512. We run and we hide,

  1513. right?

  1514. That's human nature.

  1515. And so,

  1516. many people,

1517. when they finally get exposed,

  1518. will do just that

  1519. and they'll go

  1520. and they'll start

  1521. to fade away.

  1522. They come less

  1523. and less and less.

  1524. They start kind of

1525. dropping out of their small group.

  1526. Their kind of friends

  1527. see them less

  1528. or they'll start being

  1529. more selective

1530. about who they talk to

  1531. and they'll start

  1532. cutting some people out

1533. and talking to other people.

  1534. And then eventually,

  1535. people say,

  1536. you know,

  1537. I just think it's time

  1538. for a fresh start.

  1539. I think I just need

1540. to go to another church

1541. and I just need a fresh start.

  1542. So,

  1543. time in my life

  1544. where I'm just looking,

  1545. I just need a change,

  1546. you know?

  1547. And,

  1548. you know,

  1549. I mean,

  1550. call me cynical

  1551. and I am.

  1552. I'm a cynic

  1553. and it's something

1554. I need to repent of.

  1555. But,

  1556. so I'll admit that.

1557. But a lot of times

  1558. when I hear that,

  1559. I think,

  1560. what you're really saying

1561. is you want to go

  1562. to a place

1563. where people don't know you

  1564. so you can continue

1565. to try to convince people

  1566. that you've got it

  1567. all together.

  1568. You can buy

  1569. a few more years

1570. of hiding behind that facade.

  1571. So,

  1572. so,

1573. so some people do leave,

  1574. you know?

  1575. And that's okay

  1576. because,

  1577. again,

  1578. it's not about us.

  1579. It's about God

  1580. working His grace

  1581. in His way.

  1582. So,

1583. they still belong to God,

  1584. right?

  1585. So,

1586. it doesn't depend on us.

1587. But I will tell you

  1588. that sometimes,

  1589. miraculously,

  1590. people stay.

  1591. They stay.

  1592. They get exposed

  1593. and all their crap

  1594. is out there

  1595. and people,

  1596. you know,

1597. people start to surround them

  1598. and start to step

  1599. into their life

1600. and they want to run

  1601. but they say,

  1602. no,

1603. I'm just going to stay.

  1604. And it's like staying

  1605. on the operating table.

1606. And God is this surgeon

1607. and He's starting to go to work

  1608. and they're freaking out

  1609. and they're scared

  1610. but then they begin

  1611. to look around

1612. and they begin to realize.

  1613. Look at this community

  1614. that God

  1615. in His infinite wisdom

  1616. has surrounded me with.

  1617. Well,

  1618. here's a person

1619. who can pray for me to heal

  1620. and here's a person

  1621. who has faith

  1622. beyond anything

  1623. that I've ever seen

  1624. and here's a person

1625. who's going to show up

  1626. late at night

  1627. to do my laundry

1628. to make sure I have

1629. something to wear to work

  1630. and here's somebody

1631. who's going to bring me food

  1632. and here's somebody

  1633. who's going to organize

  1634. a prayer chain

1635. so that people are praying for me

  1636. around the clock

  1637. and here's somebody

1638. who can actually counsel me

1639. and help me work through this

  1640. and here's somebody

  1641. who's going to speak

  1642. and teach God's Word

1643. in a whole new way

1644. and all of a sudden

  1645. you begin to realize

  1646. God actually knows

  1647. what He's doing.

  1648. He's on to something

  1649. because all that time

  1650. that it was great

  1651. and you were coming

  1652. and everything was fine

  1653. and you're, you know,

1654. coming to church every Sunday

  1655. and leading small groups

  1656. and everything's great,

  1657. all that time

  1658. your growth

  1659. had really plateaued.

  1660. You know,

1661. growth in the Christian life

  1662. isn't just like this.

1663. At least in my life

1664. you kind of go along,

  1665. go along, go along

1666. and it's in those crisis moments,

  1667. right?

  1668. The Bible calls time,

  1669. you know,

  1670. not chronos time

  1671. but kairos time.

1672. It's this divinely appointed moment

1673. where the bottom drops out of your life

1674. and you stay on the surgeon's table

1675. and you stay under the knife

1676. and you trust the community around you.

1677. Those are the times that you grow.

1678. Those are the times that you grow.

1679. So every now and then people stay

  1680. and they grow.

1681. I can tell you from my own life

1682. that my growth has happened

1683. not when I was cruising along,

1684. not when people were encouraging me

  1685. or complimenting me

1686. or telling me ways that, you know,

1687. things that I want to hear.

  1688. Almost exclusively,

1689. whatever growth I've experienced in my life,

1690. I've experienced when people have called me out,

1691. called me to the mat,

  1692. challenged me,

  1693. or they've been there

1694. when something got exposed in my life

1695. that I needed to deal with.

  1696. That's when it happens.

1697. So this is what it means

1698. to be stewards of grace.

1699. It means loving each other

1700. and serving each other with our gifts

  1701. as an interdependent community.

1702. And we do this all

1703. because Jesus was willing to love us

  1704. and serve us

  1705. by giving us

1706. the ultimate gift of his own life,

1707. which is what makes all of this possible.

  1708. Heavenly Father,
