  1. Victor Sheldon to come up here. Victor is a dear friend. He's been a part of our church for

  2. several years. If you don't know him, that may be because he's also a chaplain with the Navy,

  3. and so he has been on duty. He was posted in Djibouti for a year, and then he was back for a

  4. little while, and then he received his next assignment, which was to go and serve in Louisiana

  5. for this coming calendar year. It's our pleasure whenever we get Victor back in town to get time

  6. with him, and it's our pleasure to welcome him to come up and preach God's Word to us.

  7. So Victor, I'll invite you to come on up, and let's welcome Victor.

  8. Thanks, Tommy. Thanks, brother. Well, it's a great joy to be with you and to be back here.

  9. There were, as I've shared with Tommy and others, there were some very dark days in Djibouti,

  10. some wonderful days, but also some great challenges, and the one thing that kept me sort of going from

  11. day in and day out are the prayers of this church family and my own conviction that God would bring

  12. me back safely home. So thank you. Thanks, Tommy. Thanks for having me. I've now realized,

  13. well, you all up here at the front, these lights are incredibly bright, and so I am, yes, I can't see

  14. you, but I trust you can see me. So, well, let's pray together, and we'll look at our scripture for

  15. today and explore together. Let's pray. Lord Jesus Christ, thou Son of God and Son of Man,

  16. Lord, as we have sung, we do. We wait for you. We long for you. For you alone are our hope.

  17. Gracious God, I ask that by your Holy Spirit, you would grant us grace that what we say with our lips,

  18. we may believe in our hearts, we may believe in our hearts, that we might show forth in our lives.

  19. All this to your great honor and glory through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

  20. Well, a number of years ago, my father decided to take my mom, my brother, and I on the great

  21. East Coast American history tour, and I've come to love history. My father does, I do, and I think

  22. all of our family are enamored with history, but we made our way up the East Coast from the South,

  23. and we stopped at every single battlefield or historic monument you could possibly imagine.

  24. And so by the time we finally reached New York City, we were all a bit exhausted, but still enthralled in

  25. all the newness and everything that we were seeing. And even as a young boy, I remember that first

  26. arrival and trip into New York City. And this was back, goodness gracious, this was back in the late 60s or

  27. early 70s. And my father, with I think the Alabama plates at that time, had Heart of Dixie on the bottom

  28. of them. So my father, you know, a smart man that he is and never asking for directions, took the wrong

  29. turn off the off ramp up there, and we ended up in Harlem. And I remember the anxiety, you could feel

  30. the anxiety level in the car rising, because that was a dangerous time in the city and in Harlem at that

  31. time. And I remember my mom rolling down the window and asking a very kind, elderly, African-American

  32. black gentleman, please, sir, could you help us get out of here and find our way? And we did. But I

  33. remember that first experience of going to New York City and just being so impressed with everything.

  34. And I remember we went there to see a show called Three on a Match. It was one of these game shows

  35. that was held at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Center. And I remember that experience and seeing that.

  36. But I remember most about the city was the busyness, the energy, and how smartly dressed all the people

  37. were. It was very impressive. And of course, the most impressive thing to me as a young boy, being in

  38. Manhattan for the first time, was the majesty, the grandeur, the awesomeness of the buildings. I mean, I remember

  39. walking up as a young boy and just, you know, just looking up, and you keep looking up and up and up and up and up.

  40. And just the height and expanse of the buildings. And I remember thinking to myself, how in the world

  41. did people do this? How could people make these buildings and create this incredible space?

  42. I was in awe, awestruck with the majesty and grandeur of the cityscape of New York City.

  43. Now, Mark chapter 13, which we read the last section from this morning, opens with a scene of

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  44. Jesus and one of his followers as they are leaving the temple, the temple compound in Jerusalem.

  45. In fact, let me read to you in verse 1 of Mark 13.

  46. And as Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him,

  47. Look, teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings.

  48. The temple was an incredible space. It was something to behold.

  49. Perhaps you could relate to it if those of you who visited New York City, you may

  50. recall your own first experience there and what impressed you with that.

  51. Or if you've not been to New York City, perhaps you remember the first time you saw our

  52. nation's capital, perhaps it was the National Cathedral, or if you've had the opportunity

  53. to travel out west and driven from the east to the west and seen the Rocky Mountains as

  54. they rise up behind the city of Denver.

  55. It just takes your breath away.

  56. It's just an incredible experience.

  57. It's awe-inspiring.

  58. It's awe-inspiring.

  59. That there is something here greater than ourselves.

  60. And you get a sense, at least I did, of the transcendence of things in the world.

  61. I was left with a sense of both excitement, but also it humbled me.

  62. It reminded me of my humanness and also a sense of quiet confidence in the world around me.

  63. In Mark chapter 13, verse 2, after that follower of Jesus, one of his disciples says to him and

    Mark 13:2

  64. explains about the temple and the buildings and the stones, Jesus replies to him,

  65. Do you see these great buildings?

  66. I tell you the truth.

  67. There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

  68. Everything will be destroyed.

  69. Well, you can imagine what the reaction of that first follower, that early disciple of Jesus,

  70. how he must have responded when he heard that.

  71. Because the temple, I don't know if you know much about the temple.

  72. I know a little bit and I want to learn more.

  73. But scholars tell us that the temple, the outside compound or wall of the temple, the western wall particularly,

  74. was probably about four to five football fields in length.

  75. And if you travel to Jerusalem as a spiritual pilgrim during the feast, the festivals, and the holidays,

  76. as you're moving towards Jerusalem, Jerusalem is up.

  77. You go up and into Jerusalem.

  78. And it would be incredible.

  79. You could have seen the temple compound and the temple itself, the exterior of the Holy of Holies.

  80. You could have seen it from a distance.

  81. And as a follower of Yahweh, it would have encouraged your heart.

  82. It would have lifted your spirits to see the magnificence, the beauty, the awe, the wonder of that temple,

  83. which is the seat of your faith and the God whom you worship.

  84. So it must have been quite a shock to that early disciple, that follower of Jesus,

  85. to hear the Lord say,

  86. Do you see these buildings?

  87. Not one stone will be left upon another.

  88. Well, it begs the question, I think, for us is,

  89. where do you and I, where do we find a sense of peace and security?

  90. Where do you find your confidence and your trust?

  91. Many people find it in the created order,

  92. in the sense of the creation without,

  93. outside of us,

  94. like the Rocky Mountains.

  95. Others may find their peace and security,

  96. their confidence and trust in their family,

  97. in the relationships,

  98. which are anchors for them.

  99. Some would look to government,

  100. look to government and the civil realm

  101. for security and peace and confidence.

  102. Others look to religion

  103. as a source of strength.

  104. Still others might look to their possessions,

  105. you know,

  106. the one with the most toys at the end wins.

  107. Some look to what they have for their security.

  108. Others may look to their retirement account,

  109. their 401k or their investments.

  110. In times of stress and uncertainty,

  111. we tend to cling to what we know

  112. and what we trust,

  113. because that's where we find our security.

  114. What if someday all that you knew and trusted

  115. and believed was secure

  116. was taken away?

  117. I remember I was a young clergyman,

  118. a young minister,

  119. a curate,

  120. an assistant

  121. at a downtown,

  122. a beautiful downtown church,

  123. and our young adults

  124. were going on a walk

  125. for muscular dystrophy.

  126. And I told my dad,

  127. because I had a big wedding that night,

  128. that evening I was officiating,

  129. and I said,

  130. Dad, you go ahead

  131. and go on the walk with them

  132. and I'll meet you back at the house

  133. and then we'll go from there.

  134. And so I remember Dad

  135. coming back from the walk

  136. for muscular dystrophy

  137. and feeling so,

  138. just not sweating

  139. and not feeling himself.

  140. And so I called a friend

  141. from the church,

  142. from the parish

  143. who was a physician,

  144. and Andy came over

  145. and he checked my dad out

  146. and he said to my dad,

  147. his name is Joe,

  148. and he said to me,

  149. Victor,

  150. I think we need to get your dad

  151. to the emergency room

  152. right away.

  153. So Dad followed me

  154. in his car

  155. down to the emergency room

  156. of the hospital

  157. and then I went on

  158. to take care of the wedding.

  159. I came back thinking

  160. his car would not be there

  161. in the ER parking lot

  162. any longer

  163. and so I rolled back in,

  164. I saw his car,

  165. I was surprised,

  166. and I walked into the ER

  167. and dressed like this,

  168. you know,

  169. with collar and everything on

  170. and one of the nurses

  171. pulled me aside,

  172. she grabbed me

  173. and she said,

  174. I've got to tell you something.

  175. I need to tell you

  176. that your dad

  177. has had a serious heart attack.

  178. What?

  179. What?

  180. And she took me up

  181. into the ICU.

  182. Thankfully,

  183. my dad made it

  184. through that experience

  185. and that sort of

  186. dark night of the soul,

  187. but that was the first time

  188. that I realized

  189. my father

  190. would not live forever.

  191. I never knew,

  192. really knew and experienced

  193. that one day

  194. my dad would pass away.

  195. that never was made real

  196. to me

  197. until that experience.

  198. So what would you do?

  199. How would you react

  200. if everything,

  201. all that you trusted

  202. and put your confidence in,

  203. someday is taken away?

  204. This at least in part

  205. is the point

  206. of Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  207. It's often called

  208. Mark's little apocalypse.

  209. Mark chapter 13.

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  210. It's a distillation,

  211. if you will,

  212. a condensed version

  213. of the main points

  214. of the book of Revelation.

  215. And that's why

  216. it's often called

  217. Mark's little apocalypse.

  218. Now,

  219. I've sort of drawn

  220. the title for this sermon

  221. as awake,

  222. alert,

  223. and unafraid.

  224. But it could also

  225. be titled

  226. unexpected,

  227. unplanned,

  228. and unwelcome.

  229. I remember

  230. holding a dinner party

  231. many years ago.

  232. I love dinner parties,

  233. but I don't like

  234. to host them.

  235. And guys and gals,

  236. I don't know

  237. how you all do it.

  238. I stand amazed

  239. at you,

  240. those of you

  241. who can cook

  242. and greet

  243. and entertain

  244. and be back.

  245. I can't do it.

  246. I've tried.

  247. And it stresses me out

  248. to the max.

  249. And I remember

  250. having people over

  251. for a dinner party

  252. and I wanted,

  253. you know,

  254. wanted everything

  255. to be right.

  256. And I was busy

  257. and I was behind

  258. as is typical for me,

  259. late for everything.

  260. And I remember

  261. the first group

  262. of folks came

  263. to the door

  264. and knocked

  265. on the door.

  266. I opened the door

  267. in horror

  268. to see that it was

  269. them,

  270. some of my guests.

  271. And I told them,

  272. I said,

  273. look,

  274. I'm not ready

  275. for you yet.

  276. Go away.

  277. Go away.

  278. Come back

  279. in 30 minutes.

  280. And I literally,

  281. I did that.

  282. I said,

  283. just drive around

  284. the block,

  285. visit the neighborhood.

  286. Well,

  287. it's this kind

  288. of experience

  289. that Jesus

  290. wants to prevent

  291. in one sense.

  292. That he is coming

  293. again.

  294. He will return

  295. in power

  296. and great glory.

  297. And when the

  298. Son of Man returns,

  299. will he find faith?

  300. On the earth.

  301. Will we be ready?

  302. Will we welcome him?

  303. Will his agenda

  304. and his timing

  305. and his coming,

  306. is that more important?

  307. Or is my dinner party,

  308. my career,

  309. my relational pursuits,

  310. my acquiring possessions,

  311. my investments,

  312. or my striving for whatever,

  313. is that more important

  314. than his second coming?

  315. Well,

  316. I want to look briefly

  317. at the context

  318. this morning

  319. of this section

  320. of Mark chapter 13,

    Mark 13:27

  321. verses 27 and following.

  322. And I want to explore

  323. with you

  324. these main points

  325. or these sort of

  326. life lessons,

  327. I think,

  328. that Jesus

  329. teaches us

  330. and leaves us with

  331. about being awake,

  332. alert,

  333. but also unafraid.

  334. For like the temple

  335. that is going to be

  336. torn apart,

  337. stone upon stone

  338. taken down,

  339. it seems to me

  340. that Jesus is telling us

  341. in this section

  342. of Mark chapter 13

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  343. that the building blocks,

  344. the bedrock

  345. of both society,

  346. culture,

  347. nature,

  348. and even our personal lives,

  349. everything is going

  350. to be shaken.

  351. Everything

  352. is going to be shaken.

  353. And ultimately,

  354. everything is going

  355. to be swept away.

  356. This is why we call it

  357. the end times.

  358. The end times.

  359. I love the,

  360. I saw a bumper sticker,

  361. or heard about

  362. a bumper sticker

  363. which I think

  364. is absolutely perfect.

  365. I mean,

  366. I love Washington,

  367. D.C.

  368. and I've worked here

  369. in the Pentagon

  370. and had two tours

  371. of duty here.

  372. I'm coming back

  373. after this next year.

  374. I'm on a one-year

  375. assignment to New Orleans,

  376. but I'm coming back

  377. and planting myself here,

  378. God willing.

  379. So I love,

  380. I love D.C.

  381. There's wonderful things

  382. about D.C.

  383. But I think

  384. this sort of bumper sticker

  385. really sort of

  386. capsulates my own experience

  387. of D.C.

  388. Jesus is coming back soon.

  389. Everybody,

  390. look busy.

  391. I thought that was good.

  392. You don't agree.

  393. It's not my fault.

  394. Jesus says that

  395. everything is going

  396. to be shaken.

  397. Everything is going

  398. to be swept away.

  399. And a time will come,

  400. he says earlier

  401. in Mark chapter 13,

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  402. that there will rise up

  403. false religious leaders,

  404. messiahs of a type,

  405. who will lead people astray.

  406. That the world

  407. will experience war

  408. and strife and conflict

  409. as it's never known.

  410. That there will be

  411. natural disasters

  412. and humanitarian crises.

  413. That for us,

  414. his followers,

  415. yes,

  416. there will be

  417. persecution

  418. and intense suffering.

  419. And finally,

  420. Jesus says

  421. in Mark 13

  422. that there will be

  423. betrayal.

  424. Even within families.

  425. It would make

  426. the French Revolution

  427. look like something

  428. minor in comparison.

  429. Brother will betray brother.

  430. Mother will betray daughter.

  431. Children will betray

  432. their parents.

  433. So all of society,

  434. everything,

  435. just completely

  436. comes unglued.

  437. Every stone

  438. is taken down.

  439. And yet,

  440. what remains?

  441. Does anything remain?

  442. Jesus tells us,

  443. yes.

  444. this is what remains.

  445. Let's see.

  446. Well,

  447. I'm looking for the exact...

  448. Well,

  449. anyway,

  450. in Mark chapter 13,

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  451. he tells us

  452. what does remain.

  453. He says,

  454. heaven and earth

  455. will pass away.

  456. But my words,

  457. he says,

  458. will not pass away.

  459. The stone

  460. which the builders

  461. rejected

  462. has become

  463. the chief cornerstone.

  464. And this is marvelous

  465. in our eyes.

  466. Brothers and sisters,

  467. when all is shaken

  468. and swept away,

  469. the only thing

  470. that remains,

  471. the only thing

  472. that will remain,

  473. is Jesus Christ.

  474. Christ,

  475. and his body,

  476. the church.

  477. And yet,

  478. beloved,

  479. the only,

  480. the only way

  481. you will

  482. come to know

  483. and experience

  484. and learn

  485. that Jesus Christ

  486. is all you need

  487. is until you're

  488. put in a position,

  489. in a situation,

  490. in which Jesus Christ

  491. really is all you have.

  492. He's all you have.

  493. Christ and his church

  494. are all you have.

  495. And then you'll discover

  496. that his words are true.

  497. He really is

  498. all you need.

  499. Well,

  500. all of this begs

  501. the question,

  502. I think,

  503. of,

  504. as Dan was praying

  505. and alluding to,

  506. what are we to do

  507. with this?

  508. Okay,

  509. what,

  510. how are we to respond?

  511. Can we prepare?

  512. I mean,

  513. what,

  514. how do we think

  515. and get our minds

  516. around this?

  517. You know,

  518. for many Christians,

  519. for many believers,

  520. well-meaning believers,

  521. the second coming

  522. seems like

  523. light years away.

  524. Now,

  525. most of you all

  526. here this morning,

  527. you're,

  528. you're in the,

  529. maybe not the first

  530. quarter of your lives,

  531. but you're in the early part,

  532. perhaps,

  533. hopefully,

  534. God willing,

  535. you're in the early

  536. second quarter

  537. of your lives.

  538. And,

  539. and I,

  540. I'm in,

  541. I'm in the start

  542. of my fourth quarter,

  543. right?

  544. Probably.

  545. So,

  546. all of this

  547. is closer to me.

  548. It's much closer

  549. to me.

  550. But nevertheless,

  551. it impacts us both

  552. the same.

  553. But some Christians

  554. fall into the danger

  555. or the temptation

  556. to thinking that,

  557. well,

  558. the second coming,

  559. since it's been

  560. so delayed,

  561. I mean,

  562. it could be

  563. months,

  564. it could be years,

  565. it could be decades,

  566. it could be centuries.

  567. So,

  568. if the second coming

  569. is that far away,

  570. how and why

  571. should it

  572. have any impact

  573. on me?

  574. What difference

  575. does it make?

  576. Well,

  577. Mark's gospel

  578. and this section

  579. in chapter 13

  580. really sort of,

  581. sort of drops a bomb,

  582. if you will,

  583. into the middle

  584. of all that.

  585. And Mark's point

  586. is that since

  587. the time is unknown,

  588. and it is,

  589. neither the son,

  590. the son does not

  591. know the hour,

  592. only the father.

  593. But since the time

  594. is unknown,

  595. it could be today,

  596. it could be this evening,

  597. it could be at midnight,

  598. or at sunrise.

  599. And Jesus warns us

  600. not to slip

  601. into complacency,

  602. into that,

  603. that sort of mindset,

  604. if you will,

  605. of one of my great heroes,

  606. Scarlett O'Hara

  607. from Gone with the Wind.

  608. Her phrase,

  609. if you haven't read the book,

  610. it's a great read,

  611. I love the book.

  612. The movie is fantastic,

  613. but the book is,

  614. is great.

  615. And Scarlett,

  616. throughout the book,

  617. her mantra is,

  618. I'm not going to think

  619. about that today.

  620. I'll think about that tomorrow.

  621. For tomorrow

  622. is another day.

  623. So she refuses

  624. to put off,

  625. and she continues

  626. to put off,

  627. that which is

  628. most pressing for her.

  629. But Mark encourages us,

  630. the Lord encourages us

  631. through the gospel of Mark,

  632. to be awake,

  633. to be alert,

  634. and to be unafraid.

  635. Well, let's look

  636. at those things.

  637. What does it mean

  638. to be awake?

  639. To be awake.

  640. C.S. Lewis wrote

  641. that we live in a world

  642. that is spiritually deaf,

  643. almost as if the world

  644. is asleep.

  645. The Bible tells us

  646. that in many times

  647. and in many places,

  648. there really is

  649. no fear of God.

  650. There is no fear of God.

  651. And what I told

  652. dear friends

  653. and colleagues,

  654. and I visited

  655. some of the most

  656. remotest parts of Africa.

  657. I mean,

  658. the middle of the jungle,

  659. in the Congo,

  660. the Central African Republic,

  661. South Sudan,

  662. places where,

  663. you know,

  664. no one would normally

  665. ever go.

  666. And they asked me

  667. about our life

  668. in the West

  669. and particularly

  670. in America.

  671. And I shared with them

  672. what I love about

  673. you all

  674. and just being with you

  675. is that you know,

  676. you know you feel

  677. daily

  678. your need for God.

  679. We in the West,

  680. we really have

  681. no need of Him.

  682. And so many,

  683. so many today

  684. just dismiss,

  685. oh,

  686. they give lip service

  687. and credence to it,

  688. but they dismiss

  689. the existence

  690. and the power of God.

  691. So much of our culture

  692. today

  693. and our world

  694. is essentially asleep.

  695. And to be asleep

  696. means that you're

  697. unaware

  698. of what's happening

  699. around you.

  700. Friday afternoon,

  701. I was so tired

  702. and I was checking

  703. into a hotel

  704. near the Pentagon

  705. and the room

  706. wasn't ready,

  707. so I sat down

  708. on the comfortable

  709. couch in the lobby

  710. and I promptly

  711. fell asleep.

  712. I mean,

  713. I fell asleep.

  714. And I woke up

  715. to the sound of laughter.

  716. I could hear a couple

  717. of,

  718. there were old people

  719. like me too,

  720. and there were

  721. a couple of people

  722. laughing at me

  723. and kind of

  724. looking at me.

  725. Well,

  726. to fall asleep

  727. is to lose sight

  728. of your surroundings

  729. and the world

  730. around you.

  731. It's to fall

  732. into your own

  733. dream state

  734. and your own

  735. created world.

  736. It's asleep

  737. to me,

  738. it means asleep

  739. means to be

  740. unable or unwilling

  741. to respond.

  742. When you're asleep,

  743. you're in your own

  744. world.

  745. And Jesus tells us,

  746. don't fall asleep.

  747. Don't become

  748. complacent.

  749. stay awake.

  750. Stay aware

  751. of the world

  752. around you.

  753. To be awake

  754. is to see.

  755. Of course,

  756. the metaphor

  757. for sight

  758. is so powerful

  759. and popular

  760. in the scriptures

  761. and particularly

  762. in the gospels.

  763. To be awake

  764. is to see

  765. the world around you

  766. as it is,

  767. but also to see it

  768. through the eyes

  769. of your faith,

  770. to see it as God

  771. sees it.

  772. To be awake

  773. is to be able

  774. to respond

  775. to what you see.

  776. And to be awake

  777. is to be on guard.

  778. On guard.

  779. And I've got to tell you

  780. as one who has

  781. cared for

  782. and been the chaplain

  783. or pastor

  784. for a lot of

  785. young men and women

  786. who stand guard duty

  787. around the world,

  788. I can tell you

  789. that being on guard

  790. is often

  791. somewhat

  792. can be

  793. kind of boring.

  794. You know,

  795. it's not flashy.

  796. It's not sexy.

  797. You know,

  798. it's your

  799. standing guard duty

  800. for four hours.

  801. And yet,

  802. is being on guard,

  803. is it essential?

  804. Absolutely.

  805. Is it important?

  806. You better believe it.

  807. And if someone

  808. falls asleep

  809. on guard duty,

  810. that's a punishable

  811. offense.

  812. Because you've put us

  813. all in jeopardy

  814. and at risk.

  815. And so to be on guard

  816. means to be aware

  817. and alert

  818. to the situation

  819. around you.

  820. And then Jesus

  821. tells us,

  822. as he's saying,

  823. to stay awake.

  824. He's also reminding us

  825. to stay alert

  826. as we are awake.

  827. To be aware.

  828. He uses the analogy

  829. of the fig tree.

  830. You know,

  831. when you go out

  832. in the spring,

  833. early spring,

  834. you begin to see

  835. the leaves bud

  836. and the trees.

  837. I drove down

  838. the GW Parkway,

  839. which I love yesterday.

  840. And, you know,

  841. I forgot,

  842. I've forgotten the song,

  843. All the Leaves Are Brown.

  844. Who sang that?

  845. I forget.

  846. Who was that?

  847. Yeah,

  848. the mom's about,

  849. right.

  850. I just,

  851. I love that song.

  852. All the leaves are brown.

  853. And I found myself

  854. singing that again.

  855. And I love the,

  856. you know,

  857. I love the brownness,

  858. if you will.

  859. But also,

  860. look forward to the time

  861. when spring will come again.

  862. And those beautiful leaves

  863. and trees will bud.

  864. And George,

  865. George Washington Parkway

  866. is absolutely gorgeous

  867. to drive down.

  868. Jesus tells the story

  869. of the fig tree

  870. because he wants us

  871. to be aware

  872. of what's going on

  873. in the world around us.

  874. You know,

  875. the Bible,

  876. I know you all know this,

  877. I know Tommy and Dan

  878. have preached about this

  879. and spoken to it,

  880. that the Bible,

  881. the New Testament,

  882. uses two words

  883. for time,

  884. right?

  885. We have,

  886. we have Kairos,

  887. Kairos time.

  888. Sorry,

  889. we have Kronos,

  890. I'm sorry.

  891. We have Kronos time.

  892. And then we have

  893. Kairos time,

  894. which is

  895. God's time.

  896. And Kairos time

  897. is a moment in time,

  898. a special moment

  899. in time.

  900. And you know,

  901. if you missed,

  902. if you missed

  903. your Kronos,

  904. if you missed your flight,

  905. as I've done before,

  906. wait,

  907. open the door,

  908. please open the door.

  909. If you missed

  910. your Kronos time,

  911. you can probably

  912. book another flight.

  913. But if you miss

  914. Kairos time,

  915. which I almost did

  916. this summer,

  917. that was on a cruise

  918. when the ship set sail.

  919. And when the ship

  920. is gone,

  921. brothers and sisters,

  922. it isn't coming back.

  923. So Kairos time

  924. is that time

  925. that is

  926. a moment

  927. that you don't

  928. want to miss.

  929. Jesus tells us

  930. to be aware

  931. of the times

  932. in which we live.

  933. You know,

  934. I've done a bit

  935. of reflecting

  936. over this

  937. past few weeks

  938. and as we see

  939. just so much turmoil

  940. going on

  941. and just trying

  942. to step back

  943. from the news feed

  944. and all that's happening

  945. and seeing,

  946. you know,

  947. so much happening

  948. and just asking

  949. the question,

  950. Lord,

  951. what's going on here?

  952. What's happening here?

  953. Lord,

  954. what's your take

  955. on all this?

  956. What's your perspective?

  957. How am I

  958. to understand this?

  959. And I think

  960. as we look

  961. and reflect

  962. on this passage

  963. and the world

  964. around us today,

  965. we see that there

  966. is division

  967. going on.

  968. There's division

  969. between the races.

  970. There's a division

  971. between men

  972. and women,

  973. between the sexes.

  974. and the relationships.

  975. Clearly,

  976. in our experience,

  977. there's a great division

  978. between nations

  979. and we find division

  980. even at the heart

  981. of families

  982. and the relationships

  983. that we value

  984. the most.

  985. it's a critical time

  986. and to know

  987. the times

  988. in which we live

  989. is the first

  990. portion

  991. of being aware.

  992. Being aware

  993. also means

  994. simply doing

  995. our duty.

  996. Simply doing

  997. our duty.

  998. A friend of mine

  999. used to say

  1000. that the main thing

  1001. is to keep

  1002. the main thing

  1003. the main thing.

  1004. The main thing

  1005. is to keep

  1006. the main thing

  1007. the main thing.

  1008. To be about

  1009. the great commission

  1010. and the great commandment.

  1011. Right?

  1012. Loving God

  1013. and loving people.

  1014. And how that

  1015. works itself out

  1016. in each of our

  1017. unique circumstances

  1018. and situations.

  1019. And looking

  1020. for opportunities

  1021. to share

  1022. our faith.

  1023. To communicate

  1024. the hope

  1025. that we have

  1026. within us.

  1027. And yet always

  1028. always doing it

  1029. with gentleness

  1030. reverence

  1031. respect.

  1032. But we

  1033. have an opportunity

  1034. to tell people

  1035. about Jesus

  1036. who he is

  1037. and why he means

  1038. so much to us

  1039. and what he's done

  1040. for us.

  1041. And that they

  1042. can have the same.

1043. I heard so many times

  1044. I hear from

  1045. sailors

  1046. and soldiers

  1047. and Marines

  1048. and even

  1049. some of our

  1050. general officers

  1051. some of our

  1052. leading military

  1053. figures

  1054. that you know

  1055. and I don't claim

1056. to have a great faith

  1057. but they would say

  1058. oh chaplain

  1059. I wish

  1060. I wish

  1061. I had your faith.

  1062. And my response

  1063. to them

  1064. is always

  1065. you can.

  1066. you can

  1067. you can have

  1068. the same

  1069. faith

  1070. the same trust

  1071. the same experience

  1072. simply doing our duty

  1073. being faithful

  1074. in the little

  1075. being on guard

  1076. it's not exciting

  1077. it's often boring

  1078. but it's essential.

  1079. and third

  1080. to be

  1081. to be aware

  1082. is to stay connected

  1083. to stay connected

  1084. to Christ

  1085. and his body.

  1086. You know

  1087. the great enemy

  1088. of our soul

  1089. one of the things

1090. that he wants to do

  1091. without a doubt

1092. is to not only divide

  1093. divide people

  1094. and everything

  1095. but he wants

  1096. to isolate us

1097. he wants to isolate us

  1098. from

  1099. the body

  1100. of believers

  1101. from the church.

  1102. and so

  1103. be very aware

  1104. of the temptation

  1105. to

  1106. and especially

  1107. if you're more

  1108. of an introvert

  1109. or you're

  1110. dealing with

  1111. difficult circumstances

  1112. in your own life

  1113. that there's always

  1114. a temptation

  1115. to become isolated

  1116. and to move away

  1117. from Christ

  1118. and his church.

  1119. But Jesus

  1120. reminds us

  1121. to stay connected

  1122. to stay alert

  1123. to stay aware.

  1124. Well

  1125. in this

  1126. Advent season

  1127. it's a season

  1128. of preparation

  1129. as Dan mentioned

  1130. as we are singing

  1131. about and will continue

  1132. over the next

  1133. four Sundays.

  1134. It's a season

  1135. of preparation

  1136. and yet

  1137. we're told

  1138. that ultimately

  1139. everything will be

  1140. swept away

  1141. that in the second

  1142. coming

  1143. Christ will return.

  1144. Advent

  1145. is for us

  1146. in the church

  1147. it is a unique

  1148. spiritual tool

  1149. from God's toolbox.

  1150. you know

  1151. one of the

  1152. songs we read

  1153. we sang

  1154. rather

  1155. the words

  1156. came from

  1157. St. Ambrose

  1158. and from Martin Luther

  1159. and Martin Luther

  1160. described the human

  1161. condition

  1162. he said

  1163. the heart

  1164. the heart

  1165. is like an

  1166. idol factory

  1167. I-D-O-L

  1168. idol factory

  1169. and Advent

  1170. is God's

  1171. righteous

  1172. hammer

  1173. to smash

  1174. the idols

  1175. of our hearts

  1176. the idols

  1177. of my own

  1178. heart

  1179. when my agenda

  1180. my pursuits

  1181. become so much

  1182. more important

  1183. than Christ

  1184. and his

  1185. work in the world

  1186. and in my life.

  1187. Advent

  1188. is a

  1189. is a reminder

  1190. it's a call

  1191. it's a wake up call

  1192. to all of us

  1193. as believers.

  1194. Now Advent

  1195. finally can

  1196. can leave us

  1197. in these scripture

  1198. readings today

  1199. they may leave you

  1200. feeling anxious

  1201. or perhaps

  1202. a bit

  1203. fearful.

  1204. Maybe you discover

  1205. that as I've done

  1206. in the past

  1207. that Lord

  1208. I

  1209. forgive me

  1210. I

  1211. often want

  1212. what I want

  1213. more than

  1214. what you want

  1215. and Lord

  1216. I don't know

  1217. how to

  1218. I don't know

  1219. how to

  1220. I don't know

  1221. how to let go

  1222. of some of

  1223. these things

  1224. I don't

  1225. I don't know

  1226. how to want

  1227. more of what

  1228. what you want

  1229. but I

  1230. but I

  1231. I think I want

  1232. that

  1233. I do want

  1234. that

  1235. Jesus

  1236. beloved

  1237. wants us

  1238. to be

  1239. not only

  1240. awake

  1241. and alert

  1242. but he also

  1243. wants us

  1244. to be

  1245. unafraid

  1246. unafraid

  1247. now I am

  1248. I am

  1249. no hero

  1250. far from

  1251. it

  1252. I was

  1253. walking

  1254. in the

  1255. pentagon

  1256. yesterday

  1257. a Friday

  1258. a Friday

  1259. afternoon

  1260. and there

  1261. was someone

  1262. there who

  1263. I do not

  1264. want to see

  1265. I just

  1266. I don't

  1267. want to see

  1268. him

  1269. and that

  1270. tells me

  1271. that I

  1272. probably need

  1273. to see

  1274. him

  1275. I probably

  1276. need to be

  1277. reconciled

  1278. with him

  1279. if there's

  1280. anything

  1281. between us

  1282. but I

  1283. didn't want

  1284. to see

  1285. him

  1286. and I

  1287. was going

  1288. to walk

  1289. down a

  1290. passageway

  1291. that I

  1292. might have

  1293. seen him

  1294. and I

  1295. heard this

  1296. scripture

  1297. again

  1298. this Mark

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  1299. chapter 13

  1300. be awake

  1301. be alert

  1302. but don't

  1303. be afraid

  1304. don't be

  1305. afraid

  1306. so I

  1307. said

  1308. Lord

  1309. I'm not

  1310. going to

  1311. be afraid

  1312. you're in

  1313. charge

  1314. you're in

  1315. control

  1316. if I run

  1317. into him

  1318. so be it

  1319. and we'll

  1320. deal with it

  1321. then with

  1322. your help

  1323. but if not

  1324. there'll be

  1325. another time

  1326. Jesus

  1327. wants us

  1328. to be

  1329. unafraid

  1330. and that's

  1331. why he

  1332. tells us

  1333. ahead of

  1334. time

  1335. of what's

  1336. going to

  1337. take place

  1338. he describes

  1339. it as a

  1340. man going

  1341. on a

  1342. journey

  1343. a man

  1344. going on

  1345. a journey

  1346. who puts

  1347. his servants

  1348. in charge

  1349. of many

  1350. things

  1351. and leaves

  1352. the watchman

  1353. on guard

  1354. in Mark

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  1355. chapter 13

  1356. Jesus tells

  1357. us what

  1358. is going

  1359. to occur

  1360. and he

  1361. wants us

  1362. to be

  1363. unafraid

  1364. in fact

  1365. I love

  1366. every year

  1367. I saw

  1368. at Djibouti

  1369. which was

  1370. just such

  1371. a blessing

  1372. I'm such

  1373. a dope

  1374. but I

  1375. love

  1376. it's a

  1377. wonderful

  1378. life

  1379. I love

  1380. that

  1381. in the

  1382. middle

  1383. of the

  1384. darkness

  1385. in Djibouti

  1386. in some

  1387. really

  1388. difficult

  1389. times

  1390. they

  1391. decided

  1392. to put

  1393. that

  1394. movie

  1395. up

  1396. on a

  1397. big

  1398. screen

  1399. not a

  1400. big

  1401. screen

  1402. a

  1403. massive

  1404. they

  1405. portrayed

  1406. it

  1407. on

  1408. some

  1409. kind

  1410. of

  1411. wall

  1412. or

  1413. something

  1414. so

  1415. all

  1416. of

  1417. us

  1418. could

  1419. watch

  1420. that

  1421. movie

  1422. it's

  1423. a

  1424. wonderful

  1425. life

  1426. and

  1427. Joseph

  1428. who's

  1429. the

  1430. angel

  1431. in

  1432. that

  1433. movie

  1434. he

  1435. says

  1436. the

  1437. very

  1438. same

  1439. things

  1440. that

  1441. we

  1442. find

  1443. in

  1444. scripture

  1445. whenever

  1446. God's

  1447. people

  1448. are

  1449. afraid

  1450. whenever

  1451. we

  1452. have

  1453. an

  1454. encounter

  1455. with

  1456. the

  1457. divine

  1458. whenever

  1459. we

  1460. have

  1461. a

  1462. transcendent

  1463. experience

  1464. whenever

  1465. an

  1466. angel

  1467. descends

  1468. and

  1469. speaks

  1470. to

  1471. human

  1472. being

  1473. what's

  1474. the

  1475. first

  1476. response

  1477. fear

  1478. and

  1479. you

  1480. know

  1481. what

  1482. the

  1483. word

  1484. out

  1485. of

  1486. every

  1487. angel

  1488. that

  1489. appears

  1490. every

  1491. angel

  1492. says

  1493. do

  1494. not

  1495. be

  1496. afraid

  1497. do

  1498. not

  1499. be

  1500. afraid

  1501. for

  1502. behold

  1503. I

  1504. bring

  1505. you

  1506. great

  1507. tidings

  1508. great

  1509. tidings

  1510. do

  1511. not

  1512. be

  1513. afraid

  1514. often

  1515. I've

  1516. served

  1517. half

  1518. my

  1519. career

  1520. the

  1521. marines

  1522. and

  1523. the

  1524. marines

  1525. before

  1526. they go

  1527. on a

  1528. patrol

  1529. or

  1530. particularly

  1531. if

  1532. they're

  1533. in a

  1534. hostile

  1535. environment

  1536. and

  1537. potentially

  1538. will

  1539. run

  1540. into a

  1541. firefight

  1542. insurgents

  1543. and

  1544. combat

  1545. marines

  1546. and

  1547. soldiers

  1548. they will

  1549. always

  1550. almost

  1551. without

  1552. fail

  1553. if

  1554. their

  1555. chaplain

  1556. their unit

  1557. chaplain

  1558. is there

  1559. they'll

  1560. have

  1561. that

  1562. chaplain

  1563. come

  1564. kind of

  1565. huddle

  1566. with

  1567. them

  1568. and

  1569. they'll

  1570. want

  1571. to

  1572. have

  1573. a

  1574. prayer

  1575. together

  1576. and

  1577. I

  1578. found

  1579. that

  1580. the

  1581. marines

  1582. will

  1583. often

  1584. ask

  1585. me

  1586. they

  1587. said

  1588. they

  1589. call

  1590. chaplains

  1591. chaps

  1592. and

  1593. they

  1594. say

  1595. chaps

  1596. can

  1597. you

  1598. can

  1599. you

  1600. give

  1601. us

  1602. a

  1603. devotional

  1604. thought

  1605. can

  1606. you

  1607. give

  1608. us

  1609. a

  1610. word

  1611. something

  1612. we

  1613. can

  1614. just

  1615. take

  1616. with

  1617. us

  1618. and

  1619. I

  1620. remember

  1621. one

  1622. of

  1623. the

  1624. marines

  1625. as

  1626. I

  1627. recall

  1628. asking

  1629. you

  1630. know

  1631. hey

  1632. chaps

  1633. could

  1634. you

  1635. could

  1636. you

  1637. just

  1638. distill

  1639. the

  1640. whole

  1641. bible

  1642. down

  1643. for

  1644. us

  1645. and

  1646. just

  1647. you

  1648. know

  1649. a

  1650. couple

  1651. of

  1652. big

  1653. key

  1654. points

  1655. power

  1656. points

  1657. bullet

  1658. points

  1659. and

  1660. I

  1661. said

  1662. okay

  1663. guys

  1664. here

  1665. here's

  1666. here's

  1667. where

  1668. we're

  1669. at

  1670. there

  1671. are

  1672. two

  1673. great

  1674. themes

  1675. to

  1676. the

  1677. bible

  1678. the

  1679. first

  1680. is

  1681. that

  1682. God

  1683. loves

  1684. you

  1685. absolutely

  1686. he

  1687. loves

  1688. you

  1689. and

  1690. because

  1691. he

  1692. loves

  1693. you

  1694. you

  1695. can

  1696. choose

  1697. to

  1698. trust

  1699. him

  1700. if

  1701. you

  1702. want

  1703. to

  1704. but

  1705. the

  1706. second

  1707. great

  1708. theme

  1709. of

  1710. the

  1711. bible

  1712. is

  1713. equally

  1714. true

  1715. and

  1716. just

  1717. as

  1718. poignant

  1719. and

  1720. that

  1721. is

  1722. this

  1723. I'm

  1724. God

  1725. and

  1726. you're

  1727. not

  1728. you

  1729. see

  1730. beloved

  1731. I

  1732. believe

  1733. this

  1734. whole

  1735. life

  1736. this

  1737. whole

  1738. life's

  1739. journey

  1740. is

  1741. part

  1742. of

  1743. its

  1744. design

  1745. to

  1746. help

  1747. us

  1748. come

  1749. to

  1750. grips

  1751. of

  1752. the

  1753. fact

  1754. that

  1755. there

  1756. is

  1757. a

  1758. God

  1759. who

  1760. does

  1761. love

  1762. us

  1763. and

  1764. is

  1765. in

  1766. control

  1767. and

  1768. that

  1769. no

  1770. matter

  1771. what

  1772. happens

  1773. you're

  1774. ultimately

  1775. safe

  1776. with

  1777. him

  1778. but

  1779. you know

  1780. what I've

  1781. also

  1782. discovered

  1783. you'll

  1784. only trust

  1785. a person

  1786. to the

  1787. extent

  1788. that you

  1789. know

  1790. them

  1791. the

  1792. extent

  1793. and

  1794. all

  1795. of

  1796. life

  1797. all

  1798. of

  1799. life

  1800. is

  1801. designed

  1802. by

  1803. a

  1804. heavenly

  1805. father

  1806. who

  1807. loves

  1808. you

  1809. dearly

  1810. wants

  1811. the

  1812. best

  1813. for

  1814. you

  1815. but

  1816. he's

  1817. designed

  1818. life

  1819. so

  1820. that

  1821. you

  1822. and

  1823. I

  1824. will

  1825. have

  1826. opportunities

  1827. to

  1828. get

  1829. to

  1830. know

  1831. him

  1832. as

  1833. I

  1834. said

  1835. Jesus

  1836. Christ

  1837. is

  1838. all

  1839. you

  1840. need

  1841. well

  1842. you'll

  1843. never

  1844. come

  1845. to

  1846. know

  1847. experience

  1848. or

  1849. perhaps

  1850. even

  1851. believe

  1852. that

  1853. until

  1854. Jesus

  1855. Christ

  1856. is

  1857. all

  1858. that

  1859. you

  1860. have

  1861. your

  1862. past

  1863. is

  1864. forgiven

  1865. your

  1866. future

  1867. is

  1868. now

  1869. secure

  1870. in

  1871. Christ

  1872. and

  1873. so

  1874. you

  1875. can

  1876. experience

  1877. his

  1878. peace

  1879. in

  1880. the

  1881. present

  1882. moment

  1883. your

  1884. past

  1885. forgiven

  1886. your

  1887. future

  1888. secure

  1889. you

  1890. can

  1891. experience

  1892. his

  1893. peace

  1894. in

  1895. the

  1896. present

  1897. moment

  1898. finally

  1899. I

  1900. still

  1901. love

  1902. I must

  1903. tell you

  1904. I still

  1905. love to

  1906. visit

  1907. New York

  1908. City

  1909. it is

  1910. an

  1911. amazing

  1912. town

  1913. and

  1914. some

  1915. of

  1916. my

  1917. dearest

  1918. friends

  1919. live

  1920. there

  1921. and

  1922. it's

  1923. quite

  1924. a

  1925. place

  1926. and

  1927. I

  1928. still

  1929. am

  1930. awestruck

  1931. by the

  1932. buildings

  1933. and

  1934. the

  1935. wonder

  1936. of

  1937. it

  1938. all

  1939. and

  1940. every

  1941. time

  1942. I'm

  1943. flying

  1944. in

  1945. and

  1946. landing

  1947. particularly

  1948. at

  1949. Newark

  1950. if

  1951. I've

  1952. got

  1953. a

  1954. window

  1955. seat

  1956. on

  1957. the

  1958. left

  1959. side

  1960. of

  1961. the

  1962. plane

  1963. and

  1964. it's

  1965. a

  1966. landing

  1967. from

  1968. the

  1969. northwest

  1970. I know

  1971. the flight

  1972. pattern

  1973. now

  1974. I can

  1975. look out

  1976. the window

  1977. and it's

  1978. a clear

  1979. day

  1980. I can

  1981. see

  1982. Manhattan

  1983. and

  1984. I'm

  1985. a

  1986. Chrysler

  1987. building

  1988. nut

  1989. I love

  1990. the Chrysler

  1991. building

  1992. and so

  1993. at all

  1994. my heart

  1995. just skips

  1996. a beat

  1997. when I

  1998. come into

  1999. New York

  2000. City

  2001. and I

  2002. can look

  2003. over

  2004. and just

  2005. get a

  2006. glimpse

  2007. of the

  2008. Chrysler

  2009. building

  2010. that Art

  2011. Deco

  2012. tower

  2013. and maybe

  2014. the sun

  2015. is shining

  2016. on it

  2017. and has

  2018. lit it up

  2019. but I

  2020. now

  2021. I've

  2022. come to

  2023. know

  2024. not as

  2025. young

  2026. boy

  2027. but now

  2028. as an

  2029. older

  2030. man

  2031. that

  2032. someday

  2033. all of

  2034. that will

  2035. be swept

  2036. away

  2037. that as

  2038. beautiful

  2039. as it

  2040. is

  2041. as

  2042. wonderful

  2043. as it

  2044. is

  2045. as secure

  2046. as it

  2047. seems

  2048. it's not

  2049. going to

  2050. last

  2051. and it's

  2052. not the

  2053. place for

  2054. me to put

  2055. my hope

  2056. in

  2057. Mark's

  2058. gospel

  2059. twice

  2060. the word

  2061. schizo

  2062. is used

  2063. I suppose

  2064. it's where

  2065. we get

  2066. schizophrenic

  2067. from

  2068. but the

  2069. schizo

  2070. in the

  2071. scriptures

  2072. in the

  2073. New

  2074. Testament

  2075. Greek

  2076. means

  2077. a tearing

  2078. apart

  2079. or a

  2080. rendering

  2081. separating

  2082. a rendering

  2083. so an

  2084. opening

  2085. can be

  2086. made

  2087. that word

  2088. schizo

  2089. is only

  2090. used

  2091. two times

  2092. in Mark's

  2093. gospel

  2094. at the

  2095. very beginning

  2096. at the

  2097. baptism

  2098. of Jesus

  2099. we're told

  2100. that the

  2101. heavens

  2102. are schizoid

  2103. or schizo

  2104. they're opened

  2105. the heavens

  2106. are opened

  2107. and the

  2108. Holy Spirit

  2109. descends on

  2110. Jesus

  2111. like a

  2112. dove

  2113. the other

  2114. time

  2115. we're told

  2116. that schizo

  2117. is used

  2118. is at the

  2119. very end

  2120. on the

  2121. cross

  2122. at the

  2123. death

  2124. of Jesus

  2125. Mark

  2126. tells us

  2127. and he

  2128. records

  2129. that the

  2130. curtain

  2131. in the

  2132. temple

  2133. which

  2134. separated

  2135. everyone

  2136. from the

  2137. Holy of

  2138. Holies

  2139. that the

  2140. curtain

  2141. in the

  2142. temple

  2143. is torn

  2144. from top

  2145. to bottom

  2146. that the

  2147. way of

  2148. God

  2149. is no

  2150. longer

  2151. to be

  2152. found

  2153. in a

  2154. temple

  2155. even a

  2156. beautiful

  2157. temple

  2158. a beautiful

  2159. structure

  2160. made

  2161. my man

  2162. no longer

  2163. will we

  2164. find God

  2165. in the

  2166. temple

  2167. we find

  2168. God

  2169. in a

  2170. manger

  2171. we find

  2172. God

  2173. on a

  2174. cross

  2175. we find

  2176. God

  2177. not here

  2178. but in

  2179. an empty

  2180. tomb

  2181. and together

  2182. as Christians

  2183. we say

  2184. Christ has

  2185. died

  2186. Christ

  2187. is risen

  2188. and Christ

  2189. will come

  2190. again

  2191. amen

  2192. let's pray

  2193. together

  2194. shall we

  2195. well Father

  2196. in heaven

  2197. Lord I

  2198. know that

  2199. I've

  2200. covered a

  2201. lot of

  2202. ground

  2203. and

  2204. God I

  2205. know that

  2206. you've

  2207. certainly

  2208. touched my

  2209. own life

  2210. with this

  2211. challenge

  2212. at the

  2213. beginning

  2214. of Advent

  2215. well the

  2216. challenge

  2217. Lord

  2218. to turn

  2219. my life

  2220. over to

  2221. you

  2222. more and

  2223. more as

  2224. best I

  2225. can

  2226. with your

  2227. help

  2228. but also

  2229. a comfort

  2230. a comfort

  2231. to know

  2232. Lord Jesus

  2233. that not

  2234. only do

  2235. you love

  2236. me

  2237. but my

  2238. life is

  2239. really secure

  2240. in your

  2241. hands

  2242. and so we

  2243. do say

  2244. come Lord

  2245. Jesus

  2246. help us

  2247. during the

  2248. season of

  2249. Advent

  2250. to make

  2251. a place

  2252. hearts

  2253. prepared

  2254. for you

  2255. and to

  2256. welcome

  2257. and receive

  2258. you again

  2259. we praise

  2260. and bless

  2261. you now

  2262. and pray

  2263. these things

  2264. in your

  2265. holy name

  2266. amen
