  1. sort of uptick in quality and ambiance here. Are other people feeling that?

  2. It's always great to be back every year and kind of see the incremental changes that happen.

  3. A lot of memories have been made in this room, a lot of great, amazing conversations,

  4. a lot of wonderful times of prayer, a lot of laughter.

  5. Hopefully we'll have some more of that tonight.

  6. But this weekend's very exciting because as this retreat does every year,

  7. this is an opportunity for us as a community to take those central values that define our community

  8. and our vision and really dive into those.

  9. And our values are the values of generous hospitality, spiritual formation,

  10. and then missionary faithfulness, living all of life in reference to the mission of God.

  11. And so that first value, what does it mean to be a community that is generous

  12. and even extravagant in our hospitality?

  13. Our willingness to embrace and to make space for and to welcome into our family all those who God sends us.

  14. And how do we welcome people as we've been welcomed by Jesus Christ?

  15. And so that's why we have the Reverend Dr. Erwin Ince with us.

  16. Erwin is a veteran pastor.

  17. He pastored a church for 10 years in Columbia, Maryland.

  18. He is a father of four, right?

  19. He has a sort of historical connection with our church family.

  20. He was a part of Res and a friend with the people who got Church of the Resurrection started all those years ago,

  21. and a friend of Dan Clare's and now a friend of ours.

  22. And so we're excited to have him because he's come back to D.C. to be a pastor at Grace D.C.

  23. and to start the Institute for Cross-Cultural Ministries that is – well, he'll tell you more about all that they're doing,

  24. but I can tell you that their sort of central statement of vision is this,

  25. that the ICCM is a church-based entity dedicated to equipping churches with the confidence and competence to welcome others the way Jesus welcomes us.

  26. So that's right in line with the kind of thing we want to be talking about.

  27. And as a community, you know, we always want to be in a posture of learning from people who are leading and doing great things in the kingdom.

  28. And so our hope and prayer is that we learn from Erwin.

  29. And so I'm just going to say a brief prayer, and then I'm going to invite him up here.

  30. Lord, we pray for this time.

  31. We pray for all of us who are gathered here.

  32. Lord, we've all been welcomed at one point or another into the kingdom, though we did not deserve it.

  33. We've all been embraced into the arms of Jesus Christ, Lord.

  34. And if there are any people here who have not yet felt that embrace, we know that your arms are wide open for them.

  35. And we pray for Dr. Enz as he speaks this morning.

  36. We pray that he would be an instrument in your hand, Lord, that his voice would be your voice, his word, your word.

  37. We pray that our hearts would be open to receive it.

  38. In your son's name we pray.

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Amen.

  42. Good morning, folks.

  43. Yes, good, good morning.

  44. I hope we're all well satisfied in our bellies and well caffeinated.

  45. I am well caffeinated.

  46. And so, Lord willing, we'll be relatively sharp this morning.

  47. So, yeah, we are this weekend talking, as you can see in the booklet and on the screen, about a new we, image, identity, and community in Jesus Christ.

  48. And I will say at the outset, I have far too many slides for our time together.

  49. So, my goal is not to get through every slide that I've got, but to work through this in a way that is enriching for you all.

  50. And I know that we have got some time set aside for discussion with questions, but I invite you through this process to interrupt me if you have a question.

  51. And if it's something that I want to defer to later, I'll say that, but I'm all about dialogue.

  52. All right?

  53. So, let me start off by just kind of talking about what I call my core conviction.

  54. And this comes out of my own story, coming out of a very racialized worldview.

  55. In my college years, I rejected the faith, the Christian faith, during my high school years.

  56. I thought playing football was much more important than Jesus.

  57. And so, but that rejection of the Lord became active as an undergraduate, as I was studying electrical engineering.

  58. And I joined a group that had a very Afrocentric worldview.

  59. It was called the Sons of Africa.

  60. And I, for me, you know, Christianity became the white man's religion.

  61. I was immersing myself in people who had a very black nationalistic worldview.

  62. And so, I mean, I was, I would go to bed during those years.

  63. There was a period of months where I would go to bed watching a Louis Farrakhan speech on video that I had on video.

  64. Like the same speech from 1985 Madison Square Garden speech that I had on video.

  65. And every night, that's what I went to sleep doing, watching that, because I wanted to get that.

  66. Like, I wasn't interested in being a black Muslim.

  67. I just wanted to get that deep into my, into my bones.

  68. And so, when I, when I came to faith and the Lord brought me to himself at a historic African American church in Washington, D.C.,

  69. particular lights began to go off for me.

  70. I began to realize that my true family, my eternal family, were those to whom I was united by faith in Jesus Christ.

  71. From every racial and ethnic background.

  72. And so, the problem that I saw was that, oh, okay, I'm reading the scriptures now, and I'm seeing this is God's plan and God's vision.

  73. But I don't see it in the church.

  74. Like, the church I'm at, we're all black.

  75. There's a church down the road, they're all white.

  76. That one's all Asian, that one's all Latino.

  77. So, I'm not seeing the living out of what I see in the scriptures in any practical way.

  78. And I know that there are valid, actually, reasons, at least in America, for these kinds of divisions within the church.

  79. But that, I wasn't able to kind of shake that.

  80. And it created in me what I call a divine dissatisfaction.

  81. And that's a phrase I borrowed from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  82. That he would use to describe, saying, what is it that you see, as far as God's standard and God's word,

  83. that you don't see being lived out in the society or in the church.

  84. And it's this divine dissatisfaction.

  85. I have to live into it.

  86. And so, that's a long way of getting around to, did I go backwards?

  87. I did.

  88. All right.

  89. Well, I'll go back to what was on the slide before.

  90. My core conviction, which is that the ministry of reconciliation,

  91. as demonstrated in the local church by the gathering of people from diverse backgrounds,

  92. ethnicities, and cultures, ethnicities, and cultures,

  93. it is the natural outworking of a rich biblical commitment.

  94. If we're committed to God's word,

  95. then what we will be pursuing is the ministry of reconciliation

  96. demonstrated by the gatherer of people in the local church

  97. from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.

  98. And so, this is what I've given my life to in pastoral ministry,

  99. and now as we build this Institute for Cross-Cultural Mission.

  100. And so, here are three things we're going to, in these two sessions,

  101. we're going to try to cover.

  102. Right?

  103. Image, identity, and community in Christ.

  104. We're going to talk about being formed to image God.

  105. We're going to talk about the God that we image,

  106. kind of laying the groundwork, the biblical foundation.

  107. We're going to talk about being formed for identity in Jesus Christ.

  108. We're being formed to have our core sense of who we are,

  109. being rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ.

  110. Not to say that ethnicity is unimportant.

  111. Not to say that we're striving to be colorblind.

  112. No, you see me, you need to see that I'm a black man.

  113. But, my ethnic identity is subordinate to my identity in Jesus Christ.

  114. And then, we're going to talk about being formed for identity in community.

  115. And so, look, let's talk about the God that we image.

  116. I've been just captured probably the past year or so.

  117. I don't know how it happened.

  118. But, just with this notion of beauty.

  119. Right?

  120. To reflect on the beauty of God.

  121. That God is the standard for beauty.

  122. Yes, and beauty is an attribute of God.

  123. He's got lots of attributes, right?

  124. But, I think in this case, it's beneficial, at least it was for me,

  125. for us to study as we consider God's nature.

  126. Who is God?

  127. And, who are we?

  128. If God is beautiful, what does it mean for the humanity that images God?

  129. And so, here's the question.

  130. Like, what is beauty?

  131. Alright, why do I have a picture of camels on the screen?

  132. Well, camels are beautiful, aren't they?

  133. Well, like, earlier this year, January, there was a scandal.

  134. In the camel beauty contest pageant in Saudi Arabia, in January.

  135. There were 12 camels who were disqualified from the pageant.

  136. Why were they disqualified?

  137. Because they had found a veterinarian who had injected them with Botox

  138. to make them more attractive.

  139. Injecting their lips to be fuller.

  140. Their nose.

  141. They had to perform some procedures.

  142. They have the beauty pageant in Saudi Arabia for camels.

  143. They have documents of the standards of camel beauty

  144. that you've got to utilize to make an adjustment.

  145. And, right, it's funny, right?

  146. But, right, this is no laughing matter.

  147. There are, it's, the article said that there's over $31 million in prize money

  148. at these pageants.

  149. So, you know, I mean, I've got to get my camel looking good.

  150. So, that begs the question, right?

  151. Like, what is beauty?

  152. Now, we don't, we're not going to have any camel beauty pageants here

  153. in the good old U.S. of A.

  154. Right?

  155. But we know what it's like to commodify beauty.

  156. Right?

  157. We know what it's like to parade women and men on stages

  158. and make judgments about their physical appearance

  159. and their value based on that appearance

  160. and calling that beauty and calling them beautiful.

  161. And so, really, the question is, what is beauty?

  162. What does it mean to be beautiful?

  163. All right, I'm just going to ask the question.

  164. Y'all tell me.

  165. What, if I, what is beauty?

  166. What does it mean to be beautiful?

  167. Some sort of pleasure.

  168. Yeah.

  169. Yeah.

  170. It makes you feel like things are, you know, in a right way.

  171. Yeah.

  172. It's an ideal, like platonic ideal that you see.

  173. Yeah.

  174. Yes, but some kind of pleasure, right?

  175. It's, there's a, there's a light to it.

  176. Yeah.

  177. Uh-huh.

  178. I'd say a lot of self-esteem.

  179. Self-esteem, right?

  180. It's connected with beauty.

  181. Yeah.

  182. Yeah.

  183. What else?

  184. Curves.

  185. Curves.

  186. Curves.

  187. All right.

  188. So, I was looking at this, okay, we're all adults in here, right?

  189. There's a, this guy made this video on, he put on Facebook about how he's, it's him as the dad

  190. and all of the old school 1980s music that he's teaching to his child.

  191. Like, you know, they don't make music like they used to.

  192. And so, it's a, this is, this is me, right?

  193. I'm going to show you what real good music is, right?

  194. And there's this, there's this one song by the Gap Band, A Brick House.

  195. Right?

  196. That's the Commodores.

  197. Thank you.

  198. That's not the Gap, thank you.

  199. The Commodores.

  200. She, she's a brick house, right?

  201. And, and, and, uh, and, uh, the dude says, as he's seen the song, right?

  202. I got two brick houses, the one I pay for and your mother.

  203. So, that's me, right?

  204. Right?

  205. Curves are an aspect of beauty, right?

  206. But, question is, right?

  207. Here, so I'm going to borrow, I'm going to borrow from, um, uh, from an old theologian.

  208. Um, you know, beauty, is beauty simply, you know, you know it when you see it?

  209. Right?

  210. Is it, right?

  211. Is it this subjective thing?

  212. Is it only in the eye of the beholder?

  213. Um, is, uh, um, you know, what do we mean, right?

  214. That song, we're marching to Zion.

  215. Beautiful, beautiful Zion.

  216. We're marching onward to Zion, the beautiful city of God.

  217. Um, I, um, uh, I'm going to, I'm going to run through these.

  218. Okay.

  219. Because I know I'm going to, how much time do I have, by the way?

  220. What time are we going to need to be done?

  221. Oh, okay.

  222. All right.

  223. So, I'm running through this.

  224. We're not, we're not going to stop here.

  225. Um, um, uh, but, uh, yeah, I'm going to keep going.

  226. Sorry.

  227. Um, I'm going to, but I'll read that last quote.

  228. This is from, um, a, uh, an art historian, um, who is critiquing notions of beauty.

  229. Um, and, uh, and she says that she's not, she's not a follower of Jesus, but, uh, this is,

  230. she makes this true statement in her critique.

  231. She says, only God can act as origin and end of beauty, incontrovertible enough to stop

  232. the seepage that pollutes the ostensibly close, otherwise pure system of aesthetic judgment.

  233. That we've got to have a standard, in other words, for beauty.

  234. And only God can act as that standard.

  235. Um, uh, yeah, I'm going to skip through this too.

  236. Um, uh, Herman, Herman Bavank, one of my favorite theologians, uh, but, but he's making

  237. the same case that God is supreme, uh, supreme beauty.

  238. Um, so, here we go.

  239. All right.

  240. So, I want to say that beauty is theological in nature.

  241. It is essential to beauty is what we find in the scripture, a grand narrative of the defeat

  242. of the formlessness of chaos, a grand narrative of God bringing order out of chaos.

  243. This is the story of Genesis chapter one.

  244. In the beginning, the, the, the earth was formless and void.

  245. Darkness was, um, was covering the, the, the, the earth.

  246. It is a, a story of, uh, of chaos.

  247. Uh, and that's the pattern of Genesis chapter one.

  248. Uh, the, the six days of creation are God bringing order out of chaos,

  249. forming and filling.

  250. Day one, he forms the light in the parallel day.

  251. Day four, he fills what he has formed with the, the sun and the moon.

  252. Day two, he forms the firmament and the sky.

  253. And day five, he fills it with inhabitants, birds and fish.

  254. Day three, he forms the dry land and vegetation.

  255. And in day six, he fills it with land animals and, of course, with, uh, with people.

  256. This is, uh, essential to beauty.

  257. And so there are three aspects of beauty I want to engage us with.

  258. I get this from, uh, St. Thomas Aquinas, um, where he defines beauty, uh, this way.

  259. He says, species of beauty has a likeness to the property of the sun, S-O-N.

  260. For beauty includes three conditions.

  261. Integrity or perfection.

  262. Proportion or harmony.

  263. And lastly, brightness or, or clarity.

  264. And this is kind of morphed into three Ps, uh, helpfully by a guy named Stephen Guthrie.

  265. Wrote a book called The Creator's, The Creator's Spirit, The Holy Spirit,

  266. and The Art of Becoming Human.

  267. And he puts it in three ways with three Ps.

  268. First, perfection.

  269. All right?

  270. We, beauty, uh, includes perfection.

  271. Uh, the, the reality that in the scriptures we see this, uh, Guthrie says,

  272. To hope for the kingdom of God in its fullness is to hope for beauty.

  273. The psalmist says in Psalm 50,

  274. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.

  275. And here's the deal.

  276. By perfection, we don't necessarily mean, there's a mystery there.

  277. Uh, we don't, it's gotta be a perfection that can accommodate scars.

  278. And what I mean by that is, Jesus Christ is beautiful.

  279. He, the risen Christ, the risen, ascended Christ, is glorious, majestic, and beautiful.

  280. Yet he still bears the mark of crucifixion on his body.

  281. He still bears the scars.

  282. And so there's a mystery here.

  283. There's a, that's a perfection that can accommodate scars.

  284. It's not the perfection, Gaff Guthrie says, of, uh, the sheen of the fashion magazine

  285. that has been kind of glossed over so that you've removed anything that, uh, that might, uh, uh, be seen as, as off or, uh, or warped.

  286. The marks of human history, this is Guthrie,

  287. indeed of human sinfulness, depravity, injustice,

  288. he says, are indelibly inscribed upon the flesh of the resurrected Lord,

  289. carried into the life of the new creation by the Spirit and transfigured.

  290. These marks in no way tarnish the glory of the new creation.

  291. Those wounds, as we sing, yet visible above, are in beauty glorified.

  292. And so, it's right, he says, to speak of the new creation, the new heavens and the new earth,

  293. uh, uh, as the work of the Spirit is beautifying it.

  294. By this we mean the perfection of integrity.

  295. The work of the Holy Spirit is to perfect the creation by bringing it to completion,

  296. making humanity in each created thing what it most truly and fully is.

  297. So, there's perfection and there's proportion.

  298. The new creation, Esther Lightcat Meek says in her book, Loving to Know,

  299. the new creation will be beautiful because there will be harmony and right relationship

  300. between God and humanity, among humanity,

  301. and among all that God has made, each thing will be most truly what it is

  302. and what is more amazing.

  303. The utterly distinct character of each being will contribute to the beauty of the whole.

  304. And this reality of proportion and right ordering of harmony is true of God first.

  305. So, there's perfection, there's proportion,

  306. and there's the third P that our brother spoke of already, pleasure.

  307. Simply put, beauty delights.

  308. Esther Lightcat Meek puts it this way.

  309. She says, rather than drawing the beautiful object into the orbit of my concerns,

  310. I'm the one drawn in.

  311. The work captures rather than serves my interests.

  312. To submit to something is to acknowledge its weightier presence,

  313. to treat its presence as weighty.

  314. We find ourselves in the presence of something that's already won our respect,

  315. that's already changed us.

  316. The word in Hebrew for glory that we find in the Old Testament,

  317. as translated as glory, its root means to be weighty, to be substantive.

  318. So, when we're talking about the glory of God,

  319. we are acknowledging his weighty presence.

  320. In the presence of something, someone,

  321. that has already won our respect.

  322. It is characterized by a decentered delight in another.

  323. For perfection, and pleasure.

  324. And I want to say that God's beauty particularly is seen in his Trinitarian life.

  325. I don't remember who I'm quoting here.

  326. I might be quoting Bob Inc.

  327. I might be quoting John Frame.

  328. The fact is that these attributes of love and knowledge,

  329. as well as all the other attributes come alive and become real as a result of the Trinity.

  330. Apart from it, they are mere names, sounds, empty terms.

  331. As attributes of the Triune God, they come alive both to our mind and our heart.

  332. Only by the Trinity do we begin to understand that God, as he is in himself,

  333. hence also apart from the world,

  334. is the independent, eternal, and omniscient, and all-benevolent one,

  335. love, holiness, and glory.

  336. The Trinity reveals God to us as the fullness of being,

  337. the true life, eternal beauty.

  338. This is Bob Inc. here in this second quote.

  339. This is significant.

  340. He says,

  341. In God, too, there is unity and diversity, diversity and unity.

  342. Indeed, this order and this harmony is present in absolutely.

  343. In the case of creatures, we only see a faint analogy of it as,

  344. Among us, unity only exists by attraction,

  345. by the will and the disposition of the will.

  346. It's a moral unity that's fragile and unstable.

  347. He's saying that among humanity,

  348. unity only exists by means of attraction.

  349. We want to be unified with the people we are attracted to,

  350. whether that's my wife or the people who share my same preferences.

  351. That's what drives my desire for unity.

  352. But in God, he says,

  353. both are present, absolute unity as well as absolute diversity.

  354. This is an aspect of who God is, right?

  355. The Father is not the Son.

  356. The Son is not the Father.

  357. The Spirit is not the Father.

  358. And the Son,

  359. this three God,

  360. three Gods,

  361. one God

  362. in three distinct persons,

  363. in mutually loving,

  364. mutually glorifying,

  365. mutually submitting,

  366. mutually honoring,

  367. mutually supporting

  368. community

  369. in eternal beauty.

  370. And so,

  371. I'm going to keep pressing because I'm running.

  372. The beautiful community of the Godhead we see worked out in Scripture.

  373. We see it in Deuteronomy 6,

  374. Hero Israel, right?

  375. The Shema,

  376. the Lord our God,

  377. the Lord is one.

  378. We see it in Christ's baptism in the Gospels in Matthew 3,

  379. where Jesus is baptized.

  380. And Matthew says,

  381. immediately,

  382. when he went up from the water,

  383. the heavens were opened to him.

  384. Spirit of God descends on him like a dove and comes to rest.

  385. And the Father speaks,

  386. this is my beloved Son,

  387. with whom I am well pleased.

  388. Peter,

  389. in his opening of his epistle,

  390. he talks about this work of Father,

  391. Son,

  392. and Holy Spirit,

  393. when he writes to the elect exiles,

  394. who are elect according to the foreknowledge of God,

  395. the Father,

  396. in the sanctification of the Spirit,

  397. for obedience to Jesus Christ,

  398. and for the sprinkling with his blood.

  399. The testimony throughout Scripture

  400. is that God is one,

  401. and at the same time,

  402. without contradiction,

  403. the Scriptures give us the mystery of three persons who are God.

  404. The reality is that the confession of the Trinity

  405. is at the heartbeat of our faith,

  406. is at the heartbeat of the Christian religion.

  407. And this beauty and glory of our triune God

  408. is seen in the mutual glorification of his communal life

  409. as Father,

  410. Son,

  411. and Spirit.

  412. I'm going to skip that too,

  413. because I've got to get to

  414. what I'm saying.

  415. The implications of this.

  416. I've been going at light speed,

  417. but this has implications

  418. for what we think of ourselves.

  419. The God that we image

  420. is beautiful,

  421. and his beauty is seen

  422. most profoundly

  423. in his Trinitarian life together

  424. as Father,

  425. Son,

  426. and Holy Spirit.

  427. And we are formed

  428. to image him.

  429. We are formed

  430. as his image.

  431. The first thing

  432. that we find

  433. the Bible saying

  434. about us

  435. is that we are made

  436. in the image of God.

  437. God declares,

  438. let us make man

  439. in our image

  440. according

  441. to our likeness.

  442. And what does this

  443. declaration of image mean?

  444. Yes, in a sense

  445. it means that we're beautiful,

  446. we're going to get to that

  447. a little bit later.

  448. It means,

  449. first of all,

  450. that we have

  451. individually

  452. an unassailable

  453. individual dignity

  454. as creatures

  455. made in the image of God.

  456. we have

  457. a unique place

  458. in the world.

  459. Wait,

  460. I won't pass that.

  461. We have a unique place

  462. in the world.

  463. In his book,

  464. Designed for Dignity,

  465. Richard Pratt

  466. at a certain point

  467. talk about dignity.

  468. He says,

  469. look,

  470. I want you

  471. to put down my book

  472. and the next person

  473. that you see,

  474. I want you to shake

  475. their hand

  476. and say,

  477. hello,

  478. your majesty.

  479. That's how much

  480. value

  481. and worth

  482. it is a royal dignity

  483. that the Bible

  484. is declaring

  485. of humanity

  486. in Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  487. chapter 1

  488. and verses 26

  489. and 27.

  490. Nona Verna Harrison

  491. in her book,

  492. God's Many Splendored Image,

  493. says that this royalty

  494. involves dignity

  495. and splendor,

  496. a legitimate sovereignty

  497. rooted

  498. in one's very being

  499. because everyone

  500. is made in the image

  501. of God

  502. and because the image

  503. defines what it means

  504. to be human.

  505. People are fundamentally

  506. equal regardless

  507. of differences

  508. in wealth

  509. and education

  510. and social status

  511. and the church,

  512. she says,

  513. preached this

  514. countercultural message

  515. in the ancient world

  516. and still preaches it now.

  517. That this is,

  518. this was the countercultural

  519. message

  520. of the church

  521. in the ancient world

  522. that every single

  523. human being

  524. from prince

  525. to pauper

  526. is an image bearer

  527. and has royal dignity.

  528. Martin Luther King Jr.

  529. put it this way,

  530. he says,

  531. the whole concept

  532. of the Imago Dei

  533. is the idea

  534. that all men

  535. have something

  536. within them

  537. that God injected,

  538. not that they have

  539. substantial unity

  540. with God,

  541. but that every man

  542. has the capacity

  543. to have fellowship

  544. with God

  545. and this gives him

  546. a uniqueness,

  547. it gives him worth,

  548. it gives him dignity

  549. and we must never

  550. forget this

  551. as a nation,

  552. there are no gradations

  553. in the image of God.

  554. Every man

  555. from a treble

  556. white

  557. to a base black

  558. is significant

  559. on God's keyboard

  560. precisely because

  561. every man

  562. is made

  563. in the image of God.

  564. he said,

  565. one day

  566. we will learn that.

  567. We will know

  568. one day

  569. that God

  570. made us

  571. to live together

  572. as brothers

  573. and to respect

  574. the dignity

  575. and worth

  576. of every man.

  577. This is

  578. unassailable,

  579. it's undeniable,

  580. and yet

  581. it is

  582. extraordinarily

  583. difficult

  584. for us

  585. to live

  586. into it.

  587. Here's

  588. what I want

  589. to say

  590. biblically.

  591. Second commandment,

  592. God forbids

  593. the worship

  594. of idols.

  595. He says

  596. to Israel,

  597. you shall not

  598. make for yourself

  599. a carved image

  600. of anything

  601. that's in the heavens

  602. above

  603. or the earth

  604. beneath

  605. or waters

  606. under the earth.

  607. You shall not

  608. bow down to it

  609. or worship it

  610. for I,

  611. the Lord,

  612. your God

  613. am a jealous

  614. God.

  615. And we think

  616. there's a sense

  617. in which,

  618. right,

  619. this is about

  620. idolatry,

  621. right,

  622. this is about

  623. bowing down

  624. to something

  625. other

  626. than God.

  627. And God's glory

  628. is at the heart

  629. of the commandment,

  630. but the reality

  631. of

  632. individual

  633. human dignity

  634. is also

  635. at the heart

  636. of this

  637. second commandment.

  638. Why do I say

  639. that?

  640. Because

  641. God forbids

  642. the making

  643. of images

  644. that we

  645. would make

  646. images of him

  647. for worship.

  648. And the declaration

  649. in the second

  650. commandment

  651. essentially is

  652. I've already

  653. made my image

  654. in the earth.

  655. I've already

  656. declared what

  657. my image is.

  658. And so,

  659. literally speaking,

  660. to bow down

  661. to an idol

  662. is to worship

  663. something less

  664. than yourself.

  665. To bow down

  666. to an idol

  667. is to demean

  668. your humanity.

  669. No,

  670. we're not God,

  671. but God

  672. is the one

  673. who says

  674. this is my image.

  675. this is

  676. I've made

  677. my reflection

  678. in the earth.

  679. And it's you.

  680. Why would you

  681. devalue yourself

  682. by bowing down

  683. to something

  684. you made?

  685. And so,

  686. this is

  687. just the

  688. immeasurable

  689. value

  690. and dignity

  691. that every

  692. person has

  693. because

  694. we are

  695. the image

  696. of God.

  697. And so,

  698. I just did

  699. about three

  700. slides in

  701. those

  702. two statements

  703. because I've

  704. got to get

  705. to this.

  706. I've got to

  707. get to this

  708. aspect of

  709. identity

  710. and formation

  711. because that

  712. becomes the

  713. question,

  714. who are we?

  715. Who do we

  716. believe ourselves

  717. to be?

  718. What does

  719. it mean

  720. for us

  721. to embrace

  722. the reality

  723. of being

  724. image bearers

  725. of immeasurable

  726. value

  727. and worth

  728. and dignity?

  729. What does it

  730. say?

  731. What do we

  732. think about

  733. our identity?

  734. I'm not going

  735. to show this

  736. clip because I

  737. don't have

  738. time.

  739. But maybe we

  740. see.

  741. This is,

  742. so,

  743. Sterling Brown

  744. won an Oscar

  745. earlier this

  746. year for his

  747. role in the

  748. TV series

  749. This Is Us.

  750. And he

  751. essentially,

  752. in his

  753. speech,

  754. he sent

  755. the writer

  756. of the show,

  757. he said,

  758. I have been

  759. used to

  760. colorblind

  761. casting.

  762. And he

  763. wasn't making

  764. a,

  765. that wasn't a

  766. positive statement.

  767. He was saying,

  768. I've been

  769. used to

  770. colorblind

  771. casting.

  772. Oh,

  773. we need

  774. some diversity

  775. here,

  776. so let's

  777. throw a

  778. black man

  779. in this

  780. role.

  781. And he

  782. gave credit

  783. to the

  784. writer.

  785. He said,

  786. but you

  787. wrote a

  788. role that

  789. could only

  790. be played

  791. by a

  792. black man.

  793. You

  794. wrote a

  795. character

  796. that could

  797. only be

  798. played by

  799. somebody who

  800. looked like

  801. me.

  802. He said,

  803. and that

  804. speaks not

  805. just to me,

  806. but to

  807. everybody who

  808. looks like

  809. me.

  810. And it

  811. makes it

  812. far more

  813. difficult to

  814. dismiss me.

  815. This aspect

  816. of a need

  817. for an

  818. identity

  819. that conforms

  820. to dignity,

  821. a self-identification

  822. that conforms

  823. to an

  824. internal

  825. sense,

  826. self-identification

  827. that accords

  828. with dignity.

  829. That's what

  830. every human

  831. being desires.

  832. We try to go

  833. about it

  834. different ways,

  835. but at the

  836. heart,

  837. we desire

  838. a self-

  839. identification

  840. that accords

  841. with dignity.

  842. Identity,

  843. for definition,

  844. is a person's

  845. understanding

  846. of who he

  847. or she is

  848. based on

  849. socially

  850. constructed,

  851. meaningful

  852. categories that

  853. people use

  854. to describe

  855. themselves.

  856. And what

  857. makes for

  858. a self-

  859. identification

  860. that accords

  861. with dignity?

  862. There are

  863. various ways

  864. in which we

  865. try to go

  866. about it

  867. in our

  868. fallen

  869. condition.

  870. In his book,

  871. Sources of the

  872. Self,

  873. The Making of

  874. Modern Identity,

  875. Charles Taylor

  876. lists these

  877. four things.

  878. Here's how we

  879. try to get at

  880. our sense of

  881. self-worth,

  882. an identity

  883. that conforms

  884. to dignity.

  885. We want a

  886. sense of

  887. power,

  888. or we want

  889. a sense of

  890. dominating

  891. public space,

  892. or we want

  893. some sense

  894. of invulnerability

  895. to power,

  896. or any kind

  897. of self-sufficiency.

  898. He says,

  899. the very way

  900. we walk,

  901. move,

  902. gesture,

  903. speak,

  904. is shaped

  905. from the

  906. earliest moments

  907. by our

  908. awareness that

  909. we appear

  910. before others,

  911. that we stand

  912. in public space,

  913. and that this

  914. space is

  915. potentially one

  916. of respect,

  917. or contempt,

  918. of pride,

  919. or shame.

  920. We become aware

  921. of this at an

  922. early age,

  923. that our life

  924. is lived before

  925. others,

  926. and we want

  927. dignity,

  928. but we become

  929. aware that this

  930. space that we

  931. occupy is

  932. potentially one

  933. of respect,

  934. or contempt,

  935. pride,

  936. or shame,

  937. and we want

  938. the respect.

  939. And we go about

  940. it in different

  941. ways.

  942. I don't have

  943. time to go

  944. through the

  945. implications of

  946. this,

  947. but this is

  948. the 1968

  949. sanitation workers

  950. strike in

  951. Memphis,

  952. Tennessee,

  953. where they

  954. made these

  955. protest signs.

  956. It's just a

  957. declaration of

  958. dignity.

  959. The sign

  960. simply said,

  961. I am a

  962. man.

  963. The protest

  964. march,

  965. right,

  966. is to carry

  967. signs that

  968. declare,

  969. their dignity.

  970. I am a

  971. man.

  972. Look at

  973. me.

  974. See me.

  975. We are

  976. aware of

  977. this need,

  978. and we

  979. live in a

  980. world that

  981. just tears

  982. away in our

  983. sense of

  984. dignity in

  985. very, very

  986. real ways.

  987. I'm going to

  988. take three

  989. more minutes

  990. and just

  991. say this.

  992. This is how

  993. it came to

  994. be.

  995. Genesis

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  996. chapter 11,

  997. the Tower

  998. of Babel.

  999. I refer to

  1000. this as the

  1001. ghettoization of

  1002. humanity.

  1003. Rodney King,

  1004. you know,

  1005. Rodney King

  1006. in 1991,

  1007. 1992,

  1008. after his

  1009. brutal beating

  1010. of the police

  1011. in L.A.,

  1012. he made a

  1013. statement for

  1014. which he's

  1015. become infamous.

  1016. He said,

  1017. can't we all

  1018. just get

  1019. along?

  1020. Can't we all

  1021. just get

  1022. along?

  1023. Well,

  1024. Genesis

    Genesis 11:1

  1025. chapter 11,

  1026. verse 1,

  1027. records the

  1028. last time

  1029. humanity all

  1030. just got

  1031. along.

  1032. It says

  1033. that the

  1034. whole earth

  1035. had one

  1036. language and

  1037. spoke the

  1038. same words.

  1039. Right?

  1040. Humanity was

  1041. one big

  1042. happy family.

  1043. But humanity

  1044. was one big

  1045. happy family

  1046. in our

  1047. rejection and

  1048. rebellion against

  1049. God.

  1050. Our unity

  1051. was union

  1052. in our

  1053. sinfulness.

  1054. Genesis 11,

  1055. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  1056. 10,

  1057. is the table

  1058. of nations.

  1059. So Genesis

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  1060. chapter 6,

  1061. to verse 9,

  1062. is the flood

  1063. narrative,

  1064. is the

  1065. recreation

  1066. story.

  1067. God covers

  1068. the earth

  1069. with a flood

  1070. because humanity

  1071. is so

  1072. depraved,

  1073. right?

  1074. And he

  1075. promises,

  1076. he covenants

  1077. in Genesis

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  1078. chapter 9,

  1079. I'm never

  1080. going to

  1081. destroy the

  1082. earth again

  1083. with a flood

  1084. the way I've

  1085. done,

  1086. even though

  1087. man's heart

  1088. is set only

  1089. on evil

  1090. from his

  1091. youth.

  1092. And then

  1093. you get

  1094. Noah's

  1095. sons in

  1096. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  1097. 9,

  1098. and Genesis

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  1099. chapter 10

  1100. is the table

  1101. of nations.

  1102. How all

  1103. these nations,

  1104. God reissues

  1105. the creation

  1106. mandate in

  1107. Genesis 9,

  1108. 10,

  1109. he says,

  1110. be fruitful

  1111. and multiply,

  1112. fill the

  1113. earth.

  1114. And in

  1115. Genesis 10,

  1116. it seems like

  1117. humanity has

  1118. done it,

  1119. the table

  1120. of nations.

  1121. Here's all

  1122. of the nations

  1123. and all of

  1124. the people

  1125. over the

  1126. earth.

  1127. Genesis

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  1128. chapter 11

  1129. takes a

  1130. look back

  1131. at how

  1132. those nations

  1133. got spread

  1134. over all

  1135. of the

  1136. earth.

  1137. God said,

  1138. be fruitful

  1139. and multiply,

  1140. fill the

  1141. earth.

  1142. Humanity

  1143. said,

  1144. we don't

  1145. want to

  1146. do that.

  1147. It says,

  1148. they found

  1149. a plain

  1150. in the

  1151. land of

  1152. Shinar

  1153. and they

  1154. settled

  1155. there.

  1156. And they

  1157. said,

  1158. let's

  1159. build for

  1160. us a

  1161. city and

  1162. a tower

  1163. with its

  1164. top

  1165. extending

  1166. to the

  1167. heavens.

  1168. They

  1169. said,

  1170. lest

  1171. we be

  1172. dispersed

  1173. from here

  1174. over the

  1175. face of

  1176. all the

  1177. earth.

  1178. God,

  1179. we know

  1180. what you

  1181. said,

  1182. but we're

  1183. not into

  1184. that.

  1185. We just

  1186. want to

  1187. do our

  1188. thing right

  1189. here.

  1190. And God

  1191. comes down

  1192. in mercy

  1193. and judgment

  1194. and it

  1195. says,

  1196. God says,

  1197. this is only

  1198. the beginning

  1199. of what

  1200. they'll be

  1201. able to

  1202. do.

  1203. If I

  1204. let this

  1205. go on,

  1206. this is

  1207. only the

  1208. beginning.

  1209. So,

  1210. the Lord

  1211. says,

  1212. let's go

  1213. down and

  1214. confuse

  1215. their

  1216. language.

  1217. And it

  1218. says,

  1219. in Genesis

  1220. 11,

  1221. it says,

  1222. so the

  1223. Lord came

  1224. down,

  1225. he confused

  1226. their

  1227. language so

  1228. that they

  1229. may not

  1230. understand

  1231. one another's

  1232. speech.

  1233. And it

  1234. says,

  1235. the Lord

  1236. dispersed

  1237. them from

  1238. there over

  1239. the face of

  1240. all the

  1241. earth.

  1242. That the

  1243. Lord forced

  1244. their hand.

  1245. He confused

  1246. their language

  1247. so that they

  1248. couldn't

  1249. understand one

  1250. another.

  1251. And so they

  1252. had to do

  1253. what he

  1254. commanded.

  1255. Why am I

  1256. going through

  1257. this?

  1258. The point

  1259. is,

  1260. this is the

  1261. connection

  1262. point to

  1263. see why

  1264. is it that

  1265. we have

  1266. such a

  1267. hard time

  1268. valuing

  1269. or recognizing

  1270. the worth

  1271. and the

  1272. value,

  1273. the immeasurable

  1274. dignity of

  1275. people who are

  1276. different than

  1277. we are.

  1278. because I

  1279. get my

  1280. sense of

  1281. dignity,

  1282. value,

  1283. and worth

  1284. from my

  1285. tribe.

  1286. I get my

  1287. affirmation

  1288. from my

  1289. people.

  1290. That's what I

  1291. rooted in.

  1292. I rooted in,

  1293. oh, we're the,

  1294. this is how,

  1295. this is what it

  1296. means to be

  1297. human.

  1298. This is what it

  1299. means to be

  1300. worthy.

  1301. This is what it

  1302. means to be

  1303. worthwhile.

  1304. And y'all over

  1305. there, y'all are

  1306. different.

  1307. Y'all do things

  1308. differently.

  1309. Y'all speak

  1310. differently.

  1311. Y'all act

  1312. differently.

  1313. You know, y'all

  1314. are not really as

  1315. human as we

  1316. are.

  1317. That's why,

  1318. right, the

  1319. story of

  1320. humanity in

  1321. many respects is

  1322. a story of

  1323. oppression.

  1324. Because I don't

  1325. value you.

  1326. So I can

  1327. demean you.

  1328. God would

  1329. not,

  1330. all right, I

  1331. said three

  1332. minutes, I've

  1333. already taken

  1334. five, so I'm

  1335. skipping.

  1336. Skipping what

  1337. the sociologists

  1338. say and what

  1339. the theologians

  1340. say about

  1341. identity, to

  1342. say only this,

  1343. the last slide,

  1344. is that it's

  1345. not an accident

  1346. that Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1347. chapter 12

  1348. comes after

  1349. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  1350. 11.

  1351. Not simply

  1352. because 12

  1353. follows 11.

  1354. But God,

  1355. the Lord

  1356. dispersed them

  1357. from there over

  1358. the surface of

  1359. all the earth.

  1360. what is Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1361. chapter 12

  1362. about?

  1363. God calls

  1364. Abraham,

  1365. right?

  1366. The end of

  1367. chapter 11,

  1368. God says to

  1369. Abraham, go out.

  1370. Abraham was a

  1371. pagan.

  1372. He wasn't

  1373. worshiping the

  1374. Lord, right?

  1375. The Lord calls

  1376. Abraham and says,

  1377. leave your

  1378. father's house and

  1379. land and go to

  1380. a place where I

  1381. will show you,

  1382. right?

  1383. I am going to

  1384. make you a

  1385. great nation.

  1386. I am going,

  1387. in you,

  1388. all the

  1389. nations of

  1390. the world

  1391. will be

  1392. blessed.

  1393. In you.

  1394. Well, what is

  1395. that blessing?

  1396. What's the

  1397. blessing?

  1398. Yes, right?

  1399. It's the promise

  1400. of Jesus Christ.

  1401. But it's like,

  1402. right?

  1403. Genesis 10,

  1404. again, the

  1405. table of nations.

  1406. Genesis 12,

  1407. right?

  1408. Genesis 11,

  1409. the scattering and

  1410. the division of

  1411. the nations.

  1412. Genesis 12,

  1413. in you,

  1414. all the nations

  1415. of the earth

  1416. are going to be

  1417. blessed,

  1418. right?

  1419. I am going

  1420. to do the

  1421. work of

  1422. reunification.

  1423. I'm going to

  1424. do the work

  1425. of reuniting

  1426. humanity.

  1427. And the

  1428. next time,

  1429. they're not

  1430. going to be

  1431. one big happy

  1432. family in

  1433. rebellion against

  1434. me.

  1435. They're going

  1436. to be one

  1437. big happy

  1438. family under

  1439. my lordship.

  1440. That's the

  1441. promise of

  1442. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1443. 12.

  1444. And that is

  1445. what we see,

  1446. right?

  1447. That's what

  1448. Christ came

  1449. to do.

  1450. God's response

  1451. is restoration

  1452. and reunification.

  1453. See, I didn't

  1454. get through a lot

  1455. of slides to get

  1456. there.

  1457. And so,

  1458. here it is,

  1459. right?

  1460. In this,

  1461. the cry

  1462. and the call

  1463. is

  1464. not to find

  1465. our primary

  1466. sense

  1467. of identity

  1468. in our tribe,

  1469. whatever our

  1470. tribe is.

  1471. Our

  1472. ethnic tribe,

  1473. our academic

  1474. tribe,

  1475. our socioeconomic

  1476. tribe,

  1477. right?

  1478. By, you

  1479. know, my

  1480. Brooklynite tribe,

  1481. you know,

  1482. you're from

  1483. Brooklyn, you're

  1484. probably a little

  1485. bit better than

  1486. other places.

  1487. Anyway,

  1488. the lords were

  1489. still working on

  1490. me with that.

  1491. Right?

  1492. But this call

  1493. because,

  1494. and I'm going

  1495. to get to a

  1496. quote later on,

  1497. but this,

  1498. because

  1499. this,

  1500. the work

  1501. of the Lord

  1502. is restoration

  1503. and reunification,

  1504. under

  1505. Jesus Christ,

  1506. the call

  1507. is to

  1508. root

  1509. our sense

  1510. of who we

  1511. are primarily

  1512. in Him

  1513. as image

  1514. bearers,

  1515. as those

  1516. who have

  1517. an immeasurable

  1518. dignity,

  1519. value,

  1520. and worth

  1521. that doesn't

  1522. come from

  1523. my association

  1524. to other

  1525. black people.

  1526. It comes

  1527. because God

  1528. has said it.

  1529. Because He

  1530. declared it.

  1531. And so it

  1532. does not

  1533. matter my

  1534. ability,

  1535. it does not

  1536. matter my

  1537. height,

  1538. my weight,

  1539. it does not

  1540. matter.

  1541. I am of

  1542. invaluable

  1543. worth because

  1544. God has

  1545. said so.

  1546. That's the

  1547. source of

  1548. our sense

  1549. of dignity

  1550. and value

  1551. and worth.

  1552. Alright,

  1553. I'm going to

  1554. stop there.

  1555. I said a lot,

  1556. but I'll

  1557. turn it over.

  1558. What are we
