  1. I have a confession to make. That is when I was mapping out the series in the book of Revelation a few months ago.

  2. It did not occur to me that we would be preaching on the four horsemen of the apocalypse on Mother's Day.

  3. So I apologize for that. Happy Mother's Day, by the way.

  4. I actually think it fits.

  5. I do.

  6. I do. Strife, famine, pestilence.

  7. Sounds like being a mother of a preschooler.

  8. Sounds like a typical day in the life.

  9. We are looking at the book in Revelation.

  10. We've been looking at it for a few weeks.

  11. I want to start this week with a reference to somebody that some of you probably are familiar with.

  12. Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist who was alive during World War II

  13. and experienced firsthand the horrors of the concentration camp.

  14. And being a psychiatrist, one of the things that he noticed during his time there

  15. was that there was a vast disparity between how people responded to and handled the horror and the suffering of those camps.

  16. He saw people who were smart and strong and tough crumble into dust.

  17. And he saw other people, very unlikely people, actually not only survive but in a few cases thrive in inexplicably horrible conditions.

  18. And one such young woman he talks about in his book, which is Man's Search for Meaning.

  19. A young woman who was cut off from her family, had been taken, separated from them.

  20. She had been subjected to all kinds of torture and horrible experiences.

  21. And she knew that she would probably be dead within the week.

  22. Nevertheless, she was cheerful.

  23. And he realized that she was in her right mind.

  24. And so he asked her, how could you possibly be cheerful?

  25. And she said, well, it's because I've had what can only be described as a spiritual awakening.

  26. I'm alive, spiritually alive in a way that I've never been before in my life.

  27. I never even thought something like this was possible.

  28. And she said, it's only possible because of the suffering that I've endured.

  29. And it led to a great realization in Viktor Frankl's life.

  30. And that is this, that suffering is inevitable.

  31. But the thing that makes the difference between whether suffering crushes us

  32. or leads to our not only surviving but possibly even thriving,

  33. it doesn't matter how smart you are, how strong you are, how tough you are.

  34. The thing that matters most is this, how do you answer the question of meaning?

  35. When you look at the suffering that you're experiencing in your life, what does it mean?

  36. Some religions say that suffering is divine punishment.

  37. Some religions say that suffering is merely an illusion.

  38. Secular humanism in the West says that there is no meaning.

  39. It's all meaningless suffering.

  40. Christianity says something very, very, very different.

  41. Christianity says that it is only possible to make sense of our suffering,

  42. it's only possible to make sense of our story,

  43. by looking at God's story.

  44. By seeing how our story and our experience fits into this much bigger story.

  45. That's the only way we can do it.

  46. And that's why we're looking at the book of Revelation,

  47. because this is where we see the story laid out.

  48. Revelation was written to people who were suffering.

  49. They were facing persecution.

  50. They really felt as though they were powerless in their society.

  51. They felt as though the end was near, that there was really no hope for them.

  52. And Revelation is written poetically, with vivid imagery,

  53. because it's aimed at the imagination.

  54. Revelation is, it's meant to help people who are suffering and struggling,

  55. reimagine that suffering in light of God's story.

  56. It's meant to reveal the truth about what is really going on,

  57. despite appearances.

  58. It's meant to help us make meaning out of the suffering that we experience.

  59. And so that's why we're looking at it.

  60. And this week we're going to be looking at Revelation 6, verse 1 through 8, verse 5.

    Revelation 6:1–8

  61. We heard most of that read beautifully by Ellen a little while ago.

  62. We had to omit some of it for the sake of time, but we'll cover all of it.

  63. And this is the place in Revelation where the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ,

  64. has taken the scroll, which is the purpose of God in the world, God's will,

  65. and the Lamb has begun to break the seals open.

  66. Seven seals.

  67. And you know, in the book of Revelation, seven is a very important number.

  68. It's structured all around multiple series of sevens,

  69. just like the seven days of creation.

  70. And so what we have here in the seals is the summation of the history of God's people.

  71. This tells us the whole story.

  72. Past, present, and future.

  73. And this is a pattern that we look at, and we might think of it like this.

  74. This is the life cycle of Christians.

  75. It's the life cycle of the church, beginning, middle, and end.

  76. And it's the life cycle that plays out all through history,

  77. but it's also a cycle that plays out in the life of every Christian.

  78. It's a cycle that was mirrored in the life and ministry of Jesus himself.

  79. And so as we look at these seals being opened,

  80. we're going to see six phases of the Christian life cycle.

  81. First, there is victory.

  82. It all begins with victory.

  83. And then there is conflict.

  84. Conflict ensues.

  85. And then that leads to martyrdom and death.

  86. And then that ultimately gives way to resurrection.

  87. And then lastly, this all produces worship, Sabbath worship.

  88. So those are the six phases of the Christian life cycle.

  89. Let's pray, and then we'll open God's Word together.

  90. Lord, we thank you for your Word.

  91. And we thank you that there are places in Scripture aimed not only at our intellect,

  92. not only at our hearts,

  93. but that there are entire sections of Scripture aimed squarely at the imagination.

  94. Your Word tells us that you're a God who's able to do far more abundantly than we can ask or imagine.

  95. And so we need bigger imaginations so that we will be able to fathom all that is possible with a God like you.

  96. It's in your Son's name that we pray.

  97. Amen.

  98. So first we look at victory.

  99. The first four seals that are opened, each of the first four seals releases one of the famous four horsemen,

  100. so-called four horsemen of the apocalypse.

  101. Now these are very well known in pop culture.

  102. Sadly, I think that they're often misunderstood.

  103. The key to understanding the four horsemen is to understand the context.

  104. If you were here last week, we saw that all of this is taking place in a great heavenly worship service.

  105. And previously, what we looked at last week in chapter 5,

  106. the Lamb of God has just ascended to the throne.

  107. Remember, all heaven was waiting and then the Lamb arrives and all heaven breaks out singing in worship.

  108. And we said, this is the ascension of Christ from the perspective of heaven.

  109. Jesus died, He rose, He appeared to His disciples, and He ascended into heaven.

  110. But before He ascended, He made a promise.

  111. He promised that after He departed, another would come.

  112. The Comforter, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit.

  113. And so the key to understanding the four horsemen is to understand this.

  114. If Revelation chapter 5 shows us the ascension from the perspective of heaven,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  115. what comes after the ascension?

  116. Pentecost.

  117. Pentecost.

  118. The four horsemen are Pentecost.

  119. This is the unleashing of the Holy Spirit.

  120. These are heavenly warhorses of the Spirit-filled church going out into the world to proclaim the gospel.

  121. And you say, well, that's an odd image.

  122. But it's not if your mind is saturated with Old Testament imagery.

  123. And you thought back perhaps to Zechariah, the prophet, who had a vision, a strange vision of God turning His people into His warhorse.

  124. That's exactly what's happening here.

  125. God's warhorse, His people, His Spirit-filled church going out into the world to proclaim and enact the victory of the gospel.

  126. And we see that very clearly with the white horse.

  127. It says in verse 2,

  128. And I looked, and behold, a white horse.

  129. And its rider had a bow.

  130. And a crown was given to him.

  131. And he came out conquering and to conquer.

  132. You know, back in the days of Noah, after the flood, God promised that He would never bring that kind of judgment again.

  133. And to give His people a symbol of His promise, He hung His warbow in the sky.

  134. He's taken that warbow back down again.

  135. He's taken the crown.

  136. And He's gone out as a conquering king.

  137. And the gospel will be proclaimed to the four corners of the earth.

  138. And if there was any doubt that this white horse is not the victorious Christ, we see the white horse show up again in Revelation chapter 19.

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  139. This is the victorious Christ announcing the victory of the gospel.

  140. And it's very important for us to remember this.

  141. That the Christian life begins with victory.

  142. I know some of you are struggling right now.

  143. You feel hopeless.

  144. The great battle has already been won.

  145. Everything that we do as Christians,

  146. everything that we face, everything that we experience,

  147. is done in the light of a victory that has already been accomplished.

  148. We're living between the victory and the culmination,

  149. when the victory has been fully enacted in every corner of the universe.

  150. It all begins with victory.

  151. Everything we do is a response to that victory.

  152. So that's the white horse.

  153. This is the victory.

  154. The beginning of the Christian life.

  155. Now, what do we do with the remaining horses?

  156. You say, well, it's easy to do that with the white horse.

  157. But are you really going to say that these other three horses are the spirit-filled church going out into the world?

  158. And I would say, absolutely.

  159. If we look at the victory, the victory then leads to conflict.

  160. All of God's people should expect conflict in our lives.

  161. This is part of our story.

  162. It's part of the story.

  163. The red horse comes as the seal is broken and takes away peace and brings a sword to divide people.

  164. Jesus himself said in Matthew 10,

  165. Do not think that I've come to bring peace.

  166. I've not come to bring peace.

  167. I bring a sword.

  168. Jesus divides people.

  169. The gospel divides people.

  170. The gospel divides friends.

  171. It divides families.

  172. It divides governments.

  173. It divides institutions.

  174. The gospel divides.

  175. And that's good news.

  176. Because Jesus is shaking up all the old alliances.

  177. He's shaking up all the old loyalties.

  178. He's turning families and racial groups and ethnic groups and socioeconomic classes and political alignments.

  179. He's turning all of that upside down.

  180. And the reason is what we see in the next chapter.

  181. It's because his plan is to build one great worldwide global family.

  182. And so those old loyalties and alliances, they have to give way to the new global family of God.

  183. So the gospel brings division and strife between people.

  184. Then the black horse is released.

  185. And the black horse carries scales.

  186. And there's a reference to wheat and barley prices.

  187. And then there's a reference to oil and wine being left untouched.

  188. And it seems kind of odd until you understand the context.

  189. This is describing a kind of famine.

  190. A partial famine.

  191. Where it costs so much to buy wheat or barley that an entire day's wages will only buy enough food for that day.

  192. So this is describing a kind of subsistence, hand-to-mouth existence of just scraping by, barely having enough to eat.

  193. And yet the stores of wine and oil remain untouched.

  194. This is describing the situation that we're in now that God has released the Spirit-filled church into the world.

  195. There is a choice that every human being has to make.

  196. Do I live apart from that reality and subsist and scrape by, hand-to-mouth, hoping just to break even?

  197. Or do I come into the church, the place of anointing, the place where God's people are anointed with the oil of the Holy Spirit?

  198. Because in the church, at God's table, the Lord's table, there is plenty to go around.

  199. There's plenty of wine.

  200. There's plenty of subsistence for people who come hungry.

  201. There's a place for you at the table.

  202. And so the choice that we're given with this horse is famine or feast.

  203. Which will it be?

  204. Famine outside on your own or come into the church and feast at the Eucharistic table.

  205. And then, of course, after that, there is a pale horse who comes.

  206. The pale horse named, the rider's name is Death and Hades.

  207. In chapter 1, we see that the risen Christ holds the keys of Death and Hades.

  208. They are under His control.

  209. And the hard truth that we need to face, Christian or not,

  210. is that the gospel is not simply a set of propositions, a belief system, a way of making sense of life.

  211. The gospel and how we respond to the gospel is life or death.

  212. People who respond by accepting Christ awaken to new life.

  213. The people who reject Christ and the message of the gospel face only death.

  214. It's life or death.

  215. And so in all of these ways, these first four seals, the four horsemen,

  216. show us that wherever the church proclaims the gospel,

  217. wherever the gospel is announced,

  218. conflict inevitably follows.

  219. You know, I remember when I first became a Christian when I was 22,

  220. I actually thought it would make my life easier.

  221. I actually thought it would be easier.

  222. I thought, well, now that I have a church,

  223. and now that I have Christian friends,

  224. and now that I can pray,

  225. and now that I am reading the Bible and doing all of this,

  226. and now that I know that I belong to God,

  227. certainly my life's going to get easier.

  228. And it's been the exact opposite.

  229. From the moment, I would say from the moment that I became a Christian,

  230. my life has been significantly harder.

  231. And it's remained harder.

  232. It disrupted many of my friendships.

  233. It disrupted my whole plan that I had worked out for my life.

  234. It disrupted my sense of identity.

  235. It brought an enormous amount of disruption.

  236. And anybody who says that when you follow and obey Jesus,

  237. that brings peace into your heart is misreading that Bible verse.

  238. Following Jesus is extraordinarily challenging most of the time.

  239. It requires painful sacrifice.

  240. It makes our life harder.

  241. It brings conflict because Jesus doesn't brook competition.

  242. Jesus brings conflict into our lives because we have to choose.

  243. Am I aligned with Him or not?

  244. Do I want feast or famine?

  245. Do I want to choose resurrection life or death?

  246. That's the kind of conflict that follows the gospel.

  247. And there's great opposition outside and within our own hearts

  248. to the message of the kingdom

  249. because it means our kingdom has to crumble

  250. to make way for His.

  251. So the gospel brings conflict,

  252. but it doesn't stop there.

  253. The next phase of the Christian life cycle is martyrdom.

  254. And the fifth seal, as it is cracked open,

  255. reveals the souls of martyrs.

  256. And they begin to cry out the souls of the martyrs.

  257. And it says that these are people, quote,

  258. who had been slain for the word of God

  259. and for the witness they had borne.

  260. The martyrs cry out for justice and vindication.

  261. When will you come?

  262. When will you bring us justice?

  263. And look how God responds.

  264. Verse 11,

  265. Then they were each given a white robe,

  266. or you could translate it stole, white stole,

  267. and told to rest a little longer

  268. until the number of their fellow servants

  269. and their brothers should be complete,

  270. who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

  271. You know what this is saying?

  272. Vindication has to wait

  273. because there are more martyrs.

  274. More people are going to be martyred.

  275. And you must wait

  276. until everyone who is going to be martyred

  277. has been martyred.

  278. Who's this talking about?

  279. It's talking about us.

  280. It's talking about us.

  281. Jesus Himself said in John 12,

  282. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  283. unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth

  284. and dies, it remains alone.

  285. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  286. And listen, He was not just talking about Himself.

  287. He was talking about His people.

  288. He was talking about all of His people.

  289. You know, martyrdom,

  290. which means dying for your faith

  291. and for your witness,

  292. martyrdom is not just one possible fate

  293. of Christians.

  294. It is the only possible fate

  295. of Christians

  296. because to follow Jesus

  297. is to walk the road to Calvary.

  298. And there is no other way.

  299. There is no fork in that road.

  300. There's one road

  301. and it leads to the cross.

  302. So that's why He said,

  303. if you want to follow Me,

  304. you need to count the cost

  305. and you need to be willing

  306. to take up your cross

  307. because I'm going to Calvary.

  308. So it may be, in your life,

  309. a physical death.

  310. That's not totally out of the question,

  311. like the innumerable countless people

  312. over the centuries

  313. who have been killed for their faith.

  314. Or it may be, as Paul says,

  315. living your life as a living sacrifice,

  316. a living martyr.

  317. It may be the kind of death

  318. that the first disciples had to die

  319. when they left their job

  320. and their friends

  321. and their family

  322. to follow Jesus

  323. wherever He took them.

  324. It could be the kind of death

  325. of being disowned by your family

  326. because you've become a Christian.

  327. Some people in our church

  328. have experienced that.

  329. It could be the kind of death

  330. of giving up the possibility

  331. of ever having a family.

  332. Some people in our church

  333. have experienced that.

  334. It may be the kind of death

  335. of losing your social standing

  336. or your reputation,

  337. which some people in our church

  338. have experienced.

  339. It may be the death

  340. of passing up

  341. a professional opportunity

  342. because it would call you

  343. to compromise

  344. your faith and your values,

  345. as some people in our community

  346. have experienced.

  347. But one way or another,

  348. the Christian life

  349. is a path of martyrdom.

  350. And I think perhaps

  351. maybe one of our biggest needs

  352. as Christians in this country,

  353. specifically at this point in history,

  354. is to recover a theology of martyrdom.

  355. You know,

  356. between our prosperity gospel

  357. and our persecution complex,

  358. we simply assume

  359. that everything should be great,

  360. that we should live lives

  361. that are largely pain-free.

  362. We're woefully out of touch

  363. with the vast majority of Christians

  364. who have lived across the centuries

  365. when we think that,

  366. when we think that

  367. that should be normative.

  368. I think we've lost sight, perhaps,

  369. of what discipleship really means.

  370. You know,

  371. it reminds me of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  372. who was a martyr.

  373. He was hung.

  374. And he said,

  375. when Christ calls a man

  376. or a woman,

  377. he bids him come and die.

  378. So if you're a Christian

  379. and you're here

  380. and your faith feels flat

  381. or fruitless

  382. or uninspired

  383. or empty,

  384. if you feel like it's waning,

  385. if you're feeling a sense

  386. of disconnection from church

  387. or from your Christian life

  388. and you're just kind of

  389. not quite sure

  390. what you believe,

  391. I want to suggest,

  392. and this may not be true,

  393. but I want to suggest

  394. that the problem

  395. may not be intellectual.

  396. It may not necessarily be

  397. the church that you go to.

  398. It may not necessarily be

  399. anything that you're doing

  400. or not doing.

  401. The problem could be

  402. your self-preservation instinct.

  403. Is it possible

  404. that you're trying

  405. to have your cake

  406. and eat it too?

  407. Is it possible

  408. that you're trying

  409. to buffer yourself

  410. against the cost

  411. of discipleship?

  412. Is it possible

  413. that you're that grain of wheat

  414. that has not yet

  415. fallen to the ground

  416. that is safe

  417. and not vulnerable

  418. and well-protected,

  419. but it's alone

  420. and it's fruitless?

  421. Is it possible

  422. that you need to fall

  423. to the ground

  424. and die in your faith?

  425. Allow yourself

  426. to be martyred for Christ.

  427. If your faith

  428. has not cost you anything,

  429. how could it be worth

  430. anything to you?

  431. The good news is

  432. that the road leads

  433. to Calvary,

  434. but it doesn't end

  435. at Calvary.

  436. The road goes

  437. through Calvary

  438. and it keeps

  439. right on going

  440. because after martyrdom,

  441. the next phase

  442. in the Christian life cycle

  443. is the glorious resurrection.

  444. And this is what we see

  445. during the opening

  446. of the sixth seal.

  447. At first,

  448. it doesn't seem like

  449. good news.

  450. It seems like

  451. the entire world

  452. is falling apart.

  453. The stars are falling

  454. out of the sky,

  455. earthquakes,

  456. the sky being rolled up

  457. like a scroll.

  458. This is the famous

  459. apocalyptic language

  460. from Revelation.

  461. But we know

  462. that even though

  463. it seems like

  464. the end of the world,

  465. it is not the end

  466. of the world.

  467. And the reason we know that

  468. is because this language

  469. exactly parallels

  470. Jesus' own teaching.

  471. What we heard

  472. in our gospel lesson,

  473. what we call

  474. the Olivet Discourse.

  475. Jesus talks about

  476. the stars falling.

  477. He talks about wars

  478. and rumors of wars.

  479. And here's what he says.

  480. Verse 6,

  481. You will hear of wars

  482. and rumors of wars.

  483. See that you're not alarmed.

  484. The end is not yet.

  485. Verse 8,

  486. All of these

  487. are but the beginning

  488. of the birth pains.

  489. He says,

  490. It seems like

  491. the end of the world.

  492. What's going to happen

  493. will seem like the end,

  494. but it's not the end.

  495. It's the beginning.

  496. It's the beginning

  497. of something new.

  498. And so what seems

  499. like the end of the world

  500. is simply the end

  501. of a world.

  502. It's the end

  503. of the old world order.

  504. It's the end

  505. of the old way

  506. of doing things.

  507. It's the end

  508. of the old covenant.

  509. It's the end

  510. of the temple

  511. sacrificial system.

  512. The priests,

  513. as the author

  514. of Hebrews tells us,

  515. serving day in

  516. and day out,

  517. offering sacrifices

  518. that never atone

  519. for the sin

  520. they claim to atone for.

  521. The ineffectual

  522. way of religion.

  523. That's crumbling

  524. to the ground.

  525. And of course,

  526. in the Olivet Discourse,

  527. Jesus is specifically

  528. talking about

  529. the cataclysmic,

  530. earth-shaking event

  531. of A.D. 70,

  532. the destruction

  533. of the temple

  534. in Jerusalem.

  535. Which, if you were

  536. a Jewish person,

  537. that was the end

  538. of the world.

  539. It was the end

  540. of everything you knew.

  541. That was it.

  542. The temple comes

  543. crashing down.

  544. Not one stone

  545. left on the other.

  546. These are all

  547. birth pangs,

  548. however,

  549. because they're signs

  550. that God is bringing

  551. something new

  552. into the world.

  553. So even though

  554. it seems like the end,

  555. it's not.

  556. And here's what

  557. we discover.

  558. The angel cries out,

  559. do not harm the earth

  560. or the sea

  561. or the trees.

  562. So it seems like

  563. everything is going

  564. to be swept away

  565. and the angel says,

  566. stop!

  567. We have to seal

  568. the servants

  569. of our God.

  570. We have to seal them

  571. on their foreheads.

  572. And then something

  573. amazing happens.

  574. John hears

  575. one thing

  576. and then he sees

  577. something else.

  578. Remember,

  579. for those of you

  580. who were here

  581. last week

  582. in chapter 5,

  583. John heard

  584. the announcement

  585. that the conquering

  586. lion had arrived

  587. and when he turned,

  588. what he saw

  589. was not a lion

  590. but a lamb

  591. standing as though

  592. it had been slain.

  593. And we are meant

  594. to surmise

  595. that the lion

  596. and the lamb

  597. are the same thing.

  598. The exact same thing

  599. happens here.

  600. John hears

  601. 144,000 Israelites

  602. have been sealed.

  603. Right?

  604. That's the complete number

  605. from all of the 12 tribes.

  606. They've all been sealed.

  607. All of Israel

  608. is here.

  609. So he hears

  610. and then he expects

  611. that when he turns

  612. he's going to see

  613. Israelites,

  614. old covenant Israelites.

  615. And then he turns

  616. and he looks

  617. and what does he see?

  618. Not Israelites,

  619. not only 144,000,

  620. he sees

  621. an innumerable

  622. multitude

  623. of people

  624. from every tribe,

  625. tongue,

  626. and nation.

  627. And what are we meant

  628. to surmise from this?

  629. They're the same thing.

  630. Israel,

  631. the true Israel,

  632. has now gathered.

  633. They've been sealed.

  634. And it's not just Israelites,

  635. it's everybody.

  636. It's people

  637. from every country,

  638. every language,

  639. every tribe,

  640. every religious background.

  641. They're all here.

  642. They're all here.

  643. This is the true Israel.

  644. The true children

  645. of Abraham

  646. by faith.

  647. faith.

  648. They've all come.

  649. And it says

  650. of these people

  651. that they have washed

  652. their robes

  653. and made them white

  654. in the blood

  655. of the Lamb.

  656. This is an army

  657. of martyrs

  658. wearing white robes

  659. that have been washed

  660. in the blood

  661. of the Lamb.

  662. Anyone who wants

  663. to be a part

  664. of God's great

  665. global family,

  666. there's only one thing

  667. that matters.

  668. The old covenant

  669. has been done away with.

  670. The covenant of works.

  671. The covenant of sacrifice.

  672. It's been done away with.

  673. There's only one thing

  674. that matters.

  675. Have you been washed

  676. by the blood

  677. of the Lamb?

  678. Have you been washed

  679. by the blood

  680. of the Lamb?

  681. There was a thread

  682. on Reddit recently

  683. that got attention

  684. and was actually

  685. written about

  686. in the Washington Post.

  687. Somebody posted

  688. in D.C.,

  689. where are good places

  690. to cry

  691. in D.C.?

  692. And what's interesting

  693. and kind of touching

  694. is that this was

  695. a question

  696. just kind of put up there

  697. like a lot of things are

  698. on a site like Reddit,

  699. but it got a lot

  700. of very poignant responses.

  701. People actually

  702. had a lot of thoughts

  703. about the best

  704. public places

  705. to cry

  706. in Washington, D.C.

  707. But what,

  708. if you began

  709. to read the posts,

  710. you realize

  711. that this got

  712. a big response

  713. because a lot of people

  714. live a lot of their life

  715. in this city

  716. feeling like

  717. they want to cry

  718. and needing a place

  719. to go

  720. where they can cry

  721. because people posted

  722. about the difficulty

  723. and the pressure

  724. of living

  725. in Washington, D.C.

  726. And a lot of it

  727. is connected

  728. to the kind

  729. of drivenness,

  730. the success-oriented

  731. meritocracy,

  732. the achievement culture

  733. where you're only

  734. as good

  735. as your last accomplishment,

  736. where you always feel

  737. like everyone around you

  738. is smarter

  739. and more successful,

  740. where you feel like

  741. your job doesn't matter,

  742. where you feel like

  743. you don't matter,

  744. where you're constantly

  745. having to produce

  746. and it's a kind

  747. of never-ending

  748. hamster wheel

  749. of achievement.

  750. And that makes people

  751. want to cry.

  752. And so there are a lot

  753. of people who cry

  754. in parks

  755. and in open,

  756. empty churches

  757. and on street corners

  758. and in the basement

  759. of Macy's

  760. and all kinds of things.

  761. There are people

  762. who go

  763. and they cry

  764. because of the hopelessness

  765. of living

  766. in such a culture.

  767. And what we need

  768. to see here

  769. is that when the angel

  770. opened the sixth seal,

  771. when all the world

  772. seemed to be crashing down,

  773. that was the world

  774. that was crumbling.

  775. It's the world

  776. that says you were

  777. only worth

  778. what you can accomplish.

  779. It's the world

  780. that says you're

  781. only worth

  782. what you've achieved

  783. or what your resume

  784. says you're worth.

  785. That world

  786. came crumbling down.

  787. The world

  788. of earning

  789. and striving

  790. and proving ourselves

  791. to God,

  792. to other people,

  793. is no more,

  794. not one stone

  795. left upon another.

  796. In God's kingdom

  797. only one thing matters.

  798. Have you been washed

  799. in the blood

  800. of the Lamb?

  801. In our baptismal liturgy

  802. we say to kids

  803. who have been baptized,

  804. we baptized some kids

  805. this morning,

  806. you've been marked,

  807. you've been sealed,

  808. you've been sealed

  809. with the Holy Spirit

  810. and you're marked

  811. as one of Christ's own

  812. forever.

  813. What we're saying is

  814. you will be standing

  815. in that great multitude,

  816. not because of

  817. what you've done

  818. but because of

  819. what Jesus Christ

  820. the Lamb

  821. has done for you.

  822. And this leads finally

  823. to the seventh seal

  824. because of course

  825. this gives way

  826. and gives rise

  827. to the seal of worship,

  828. the culmination

  829. of the Christian life cycle,

  830. what it is all for.

  831. Everything stops

  832. in the heavenly worship service,

  833. the liturgy pauses

  834. and there's this period

  835. of silent reflection

  836. in chapter 8

  837. on the awe

  838. and the grandeur of God

  839. and then get this,

  840. the prayers of the saints

  841. are mingled

  842. with incense

  843. and they're lifted up

  844. before the Lord

  845. and this shows us

  846. that the Holy Spirit

  847. intercedes for us,

  848. gathers our prayers

  849. and brings them

  850. into the heavenly throne room

  851. before the Lord.

  852. The Spirit,

  853. knowing what we know,

  854. praying what we need to pray

  855. even when we don't know

  856. what to pray,

  857. that the Spirit intercedes

  858. for us,

  859. guarantees

  860. that our prayers

  861. are heard

  862. by the Lord.

  863. This is one of the reasons

  864. we like to have

  865. incense from time to time

  866. in our service.

  867. It's one of the things

  868. this does.

  869. It reminds us

  870. that as we are gathered here

  871. praying and singing

  872. and confessing

  873. that the Holy Spirit

  874. is interceding,

  875. that our prayers

  876. are being heard,

  877. they're going to heaven,

  878. right?

  879. It's a symbol.

  880. And then something

  881. even more amazing happens.

  882. The censer,

  883. all of the prayers,

  884. the censer is filled

  885. with fire

  886. and then that fire

  887. in response

  888. to the saints' prayers,

  889. that fire is cast down

  890. on the earth.

  891. God answers the prayer.

  892. The prayers of the saints

  893. are effectual.

  894. They are powerful.

  895. The prayer of God's people,

  896. when we gather together

  897. and when we pray,

  898. all hell trembles.

  899. All hell trembles.

  900. The most important thing

  901. that we do as God's people,

  902. our greatest resource,

  903. is prayer.

  904. And when we pray,

  905. this shows us

  906. we should be bold.

  907. Bold in our prayer.

  908. We should know

  909. that God hears us.

  910. We should know

  911. the truth of James 5.16.

  912. The prayer of a righteous person

  913. has great power

  914. as it is working.

  915. And by the way,

  916. Revelation as a whole,

  917. this entire book,

  918. is about the Lord's prayer

  919. being answered.

  920. We pray it every week.

  921. Our Father who art in heaven,

  922. hallowed be your name.

  923. Thy kingdom come,

  924. thy will be done

  925. on earth as it is in heaven.

  926. That's Revelation.

  927. God's kingdom coming.

  928. God's will being done

  929. here as it has eternally been done

  930. in the heavenly realm.

  931. So this is the life cycle

  932. of the church.

  933. It's the life cycle

  934. of every Christian.

  935. This is something

  936. that is not only enacted

  937. throughout history

  938. across the centuries,

  939. but it's something

  940. that we experience

  941. in our own walk of faith.

  942. In some of us,

  943. it's a cycle

  944. that plays out again

  945. and again

  946. and again.

  947. It begins with victory.

  948. The victory that Jesus Christ

  949. has accomplished

  950. and our willingness

  951. to accept that.

  952. it leads to conflict.

  953. It leads to the kind of conflict

  954. that forces us to choose

  955. where our loyalties really lie.

  956. That gives way

  957. to the call for martyrdom.

  958. It's not enough

  959. just to acknowledge Jesus.

  960. He calls us to Calvary

  961. to be that grain

  962. that falls to the ground

  963. and dies

  964. so that it can bear much fruit.

  965. Ultimately,

  966. martyrdom is not the end.

  967. We have the resurrection promise.

  968. Out of death,

  969. God brings resurrection life,

  970. renewal,

  971. and then that new life

  972. produces worship

  973. and effectual prayer.

  974. This is the shape

  975. that Jesus' ministry takes

  976. and it's the shape

  977. that His church

  978. in her ministry will take

  979. and it's the shape

  980. that our lives

  981. in our ministry will take.

  982. So it's worth asking yourself

  983. as we prepare to move on

  984. in our service,

  985. where do you find yourself

  986. in this cycle?

  987. If you're somebody

  988. who's here

  989. and you're not sure

  990. what you believe,

  991. you wouldn't consider yourself

  992. to be a Christian,

  993. perhaps you're considering

  994. whether or not

  995. this is a victory

  996. that has been accomplished

  997. on your behalf.

  998. That Jesus Christ

  999. has overcome sin and death

  1000. and desires to overcome

  1001. sin and death

  1002. in your life.

  1003. Maybe you're a Christian

  1004. but you're facing

  1005. massive conflict.

  1006. Don't think that God

  1007. has abandoned you.

  1008. Don't think that God

  1009. doesn't hear your prayer.

1010. Don't think that all of this

  1011. is for naught.

  1012. If you're experiencing

  1013. conflict as a Christian,

  1014. it means you're right

  1015. where you belong.

  1016. This is exactly what

  1017. the story tells us

  1018. is going to happen.

  1019. That's what it means.

  1020. That's all it means.

1021. Are you in a place

  1022. of martyrdom

  1023. where God is trying

  1024. to put something

1025. in your life to death?

  1026. He's trying to kill

  1027. something in your life.

1028. Are you holding on to it,

  1029. protecting it,

1030. or will you let him take it?

1031. Because one of the things

  1032. that we recognize

1033. as we see this story unfold,

1034. here's what the story shows us.

1035. We all want resurrection life.

1036. We all want effectual prayer.

1037. We all want authentic worship.

1038. We all want the joy

  1039. that comes with that.

  1040. But resurrection life

  1041. and worship,

  1042. effectual prayer,

  1043. those are things

  1044. that are only found

  1045. on the far side

  1046. of conflict

  1047. and martyrdom.

  1048. That's the road

  1049. that we're called

  1050. to walk.

  1051. Let's pray.

  1052. Amen.

  1053. Let's pray.
