  1. The other day I was reading a book with our two-year-old, Emmy, and that was a neat little

  2. book.

  3. It had pictures of places and pictures of animals and creatures, and what you had to

  4. do with the book was to take each picture of an animal, and you had to match the animal

  5. with the correct picture of the animal's home.

  6. The idea being that each kind of animal has a specific home that is designed just for

  7. that animal to meet all of its needs where it will be completely comfortable.

  8. And as I was reading this book with her, I found myself thinking, what if this book had

  9. a picture of a human being in it?

  10. What would the picture of home look like?

  11. Revelation chapters 21 and 22.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  12. We've been in a long study of this masterful, amazing, sometimes baffling work of the Apostle

  13. John through the inspiration of the Spirit, and at last we come to Revelation 21 and 22.

  14. As Ellen so beautifully read, this gives us a description of a vast city.

  15. But it's a city unlike anything we've ever seen.

  16. It goes beyond anything we can really imagine.

  17. It's almost the size of Australia.

  18. It has jewel-encrusted walls that stand 1,500 miles high.

  19. By comparison, Mount Everest is 5.5 miles high.

  20. We can barely survive being on the summit of that mountain.

  21. These walls stand 1,500 miles high.

  22. It's a city far greater than anything human beings have ever produced, anything we will

  23. ever produce.

  24. It's beyond all imagining.

  25. It makes New York City look like a Lego set.

  26. But the most amazing thing about this city is that it shows us in highly symbolic language,

  27. and if we were first century Christians steeped in Old Testament imagery, the descriptions would

  28. make a lot more sense.

  29. But it shows us through highly symbolic language what our true home really looks like.

  30. In other words, this world is not our true home.

  31. It sometimes looks like it.

  32. It sometimes feels like it.

  33. But it's not our true home.

  34. The picture that we are meant to be matched with is the New Jerusalem.

  35. And so what we're going to do is we're going to spend some time this morning looking at this

  36. home, this true home, and trying to understand why it's so perfectly suited for us as human

  37. beings.

  38. Let's pray, and then we'll dive in.

  39. Lord, we thank You for Your Word.

  40. And every week, it's so tempting to put Your Word down on the table, on the dissecting table,

  41. and to begin to take it apart piece by piece, to analyze it, to scrutinize it.

  42. But Lord, we know that what we most need this morning is to be the ones on the table.

  43. We need to sit under Your Word.

  44. We need Your Word to analyze us, to scrutinize us, to open up our hearts, to reveal to us

  45. those deep places where we most need light and truth and love and grace.

  46. And as we open Your written Word, Lord, we pray that by the power of Your Spirit, we would

  47. come face to face with Your living Word, Jesus Christ.

  48. It's in His name that we pray.

  49. Amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. So, the first thing we see about this home as we look at some of the great themes of these

  52. chapters is this.

  53. Home is a place where creation is renewed.

  54. All creation is renewed.

  55. In chapter 21, verse 5, it says,

  56. He who is seated on the throne said,

  57. Behold, I am making all things new.

  58. And notice He says,

  59. Not, I am making all new things.

  60. Right?

  61. Which has been a very prevalent belief, especially in the evangelical church over the last century

  62. or so.

  63. The idea that God's going to scrap this world.

  64. It's going to all burn up in fire.

  65. And that God's going to make all new things.

  66. That's not what it says.

  67. It says, I make all things new.

  68. Right?

  69. In this world, all things break down.

  70. All things decay.

  71. It's the second law of thermodynamics, the law of entropy, which says that everything

  72. from the most distant galaxies spiraling through space to your body as it sits here in these

  73. pews, that everything is winding down.

  74. Everything is breaking down.

  75. Across the universe, order is slowly returning to chaos.

  76. And as we wrestle with this reality that everything is slowly breaking down,

  77. it occurs to me that if this is all there is,

  78. if we are an accident of atoms,

  79. and we come into existence as a conscious, sentient being for a few decades,

  80. but we are doomed to break down and to return to dust,

  81. if that's all there is, it seems like after all this time of being human beings on the earth,

  82. we would have gotten used to the idea.

  83. That we would have come to terms with our fate and our destiny.

  84. If there's no God and no world beyond this one, we should have accepted that by now.

  85. And you know, the atheist Richard Dawkins tries to dress this whole idea up a bit.

  86. He tries to infuse it with some sense of beauty.

  87. He offers a eulogy to his mentor,

  88. and in that eulogy he describes the man's body decaying and being consumed,

  89. and then living on as a swarm of insects buzzing through the forest.

  90. And with this imagery, he's trying to take this old pagan myth

  91. that you find in all the old ancient religions,

  92. this idea of the cycle of life.

  93. He's trying to imbue that with some sense of wonder and beauty,

  94. trying to make it somehow comforting.

  95. But I somehow doubt that idea would comfort a mother who's just buried her baby.

  96. You know, I think there's something deep in the human heart

  97. that screams defiantly in the face of death.

  98. You know, like the poet Dylan Thomas,

  99. you know, half drunk and full of fire,

  100. crying out,

  101. do not go gently into that gentle night,

  102. but rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  103. Do not go gentle into that good night,

  104. rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  105. I think in our hearts,

  106. we know what we should believe based on what science tells us,

  107. and yet there's something deep down that says,

  108. no, there has to be more,

  109. because this is wrong.

  110. And our true home is the place where all things are made new.

  111. Our true home is a place where entropy is reversed.

  112. Our true home is a place where death itself is undone,

  113. where God passes judgment on death.

  114. It doesn't belong here anymore.

  115. It's a place where there's no crying or mourning or pain

  116. for the former things have passed away.

  117. So the first question I have for you is this,

  118. why would we rage against the dying of the light

  119. unless we were made for a home

  120. where the light never dies,

  121. where life never ends,

  122. and we have some primal memory,

  123. deeply buried,

  124. that that's where we belong.

  125. So home is a place where all creation is renewed.

  126. Another thing we see about our true home is this,

  127. home is the place where longings are satisfied.

  128. Longings are satisfied.

  129. You know, I think we all have a kind of gnawing,

  130. thirst,

  131. a kind of restlessness,

  132. an angst that can't be satisfied in this life.

  133. Now if you look inside and you say,

  134. well, I don't feel any sense of that longing or that angst,

  135. I would suggest that that's probably because most of us,

  136. including me,

  137. spend most of our time anesthetized.

  138. And we're so numb that we have no idea that longing is there.

  139. You know, food and drink and sex and ambition

  140. and smartphones and social media and news feeds

  141. and shopping and vacations and busy work,

  142. anesthesia,

  143. all of it,

  144. all meant to keep us comfortably numb.

  145. But there are moments in life where you come fully awake.

  146. Right?

  147. There's that moment after you've finally gotten your dream job

  148. where you begin to see behind the curtain

  149. and you begin to realize that it's not nearly as ideal

  150. as you thought it was going to be.

  151. In fact,

  152. you kind of wish you were back in your old job.

  153. And you don't know what to do with those feelings.

  154. You know,

  155. and you think,

  156. maybe I wasn't looking for a new job.

  157. Maybe there was something deeper

  158. that I was actually trying to satisfy.

  159. Maybe it wasn't the job.

  160. Maybe it wasn't the geographic cure.

  161. Maybe it wasn't moving to a new home or a new state.

  162. Maybe there's something deeper.

  163. You know,

  164. there's that,

  165. the times that,

  166. you know,

  167. you've fallen for somebody

  168. and you've given yourself to them

  169. and you've slept with them

  170. and then they stop returning your calls.

  171. They stop returning your texts.

  172. You know,

  173. and you say,

  174. that feeling that I had,

  175. that this was everything.

  176. What do I do with the fact

  177. that I've now been abandoned?

  178. What do I do with the fact

  179. that I've given myself to somebody

  180. who is gone?

  181. And you begin to realize,

  182. well,

  183. maybe I wasn't,

  184. maybe I wasn't really looking for that person.

  185. Maybe there was something under that

  186. that was driving me.

  187. Maybe there was a deeper need

  188. and I was confusing it

  189. with my romantic desire.

  190. There are these moments

  191. where we begin to get,

  192. the dimmest sense

  193. that there is something

  194. down deep in our hearts,

  195. a longing

  196. that can't be satisfied.

  197. And you know,

  198. some people simply refuse

  199. to accept that.

  200. Some people insist

  201. on finding

  202. all of their satisfaction

  203. here in this world.

  204. They insist on making this world home.

  205. And you know,

  206. verse 8 talks about

  207. the cowardly

  208. and the faithless

  209. and the detestable

  210. and the murderers

  211. and we sort of wince

  212. at this list.

  213. It sounds somehow pejorative.

  214. But here's what we need

  215. to understand about this list.

  216. These are people

  217. who have become

  218. nothing more

  219. than their appetites.

  220. Right?

  221. The person who craved

  222. safety above all else

  223. and chose self-preservation

  224. above all else,

  225. eventually that person

  226. has become cowardice,

  227. incarnate.

  228. They don't know

  229. how to stand for anything.

  230. They only know

  231. how to close up

  232. and wait out the storm.

  233. Right?

  234. The person who craved

  235. revenge above all else

  236. has eventually become

  237. murder incarnate.

  238. They can't escape

  239. that deep resentment

  240. and scorn

  241. and anger

  242. and it has consumed them.

  243. And you know,

  244. God does honor

  245. human choice.

  246. If we spend

  247. our entire lives

  248. saying,

  249. I am nothing

  250. without this thing

  251. I desire.

  252. I am nothing

  253. without this thing

  254. that I long for.

  255. God will one day

  256. say to us,

  257. have it your way.

  258. Spend eternity

  259. as nothing

  260. but that desire.

  261. I think it helps

  262. the image

  263. of an unquenchable

  264. lake of fire

  265. make a little more sense.

  266. The unquenchable fire

  267. of unmet desires,

  268. longings

  269. that were never satisfied,

  270. thirst

  271. that will never be quenched.

  272. But then there are

  273. the people

  274. who realize the truth

  275. as C.S. Lewis put it,

  276. if I find in myself

  277. a desire

  278. which no experience

  279. in this world

  280. can satisfy,

  281. the most probable

  282. explanation

  283. is that I was made

  284. for another world.

  285. People who realize

  286. that if we trust Jesus

  287. with our unmet desires,

  288. if we bring them to Him

  289. and say,

  290. I don't know what to do

  291. with this,

  292. but you do

  293. and I trust you,

  294. that He will one day

  295. bring us home.

  296. And that is the place

  297. where all of our longings

  298. will finally be satisfied.

  299. You know,

  300. we see a river

  301. where we can come

  302. and drink freely.

  303. We see an image

  304. of a great wedding celebration

  305. where all of humanity

  306. is united with God

  307. like a bride to a groom.

  308. And we're meant

  309. to draw from this

  310. not only with our physical

  311. longings be satisfied,

  312. like hunger and thirst,

  313. but our deeper desires,

  314. maybe even our more

  315. painful desires,

  316. our emotional,

  317. psychological,

  318. spiritual longings.

  319. No more hunger

  320. and thirst,

  321. no more loneliness,

  322. no more rejection,

  323. no more isolation,

  324. no more alienation.

  325. Only the joy

  326. of knowing

  327. and being known,

  328. loving and being loved

  329. by the one who made us.

  330. A river and a wedding,

  331. right?

  332. Drinking from the water of life

  333. and drinking

  334. from the limitless intimacy

  335. that we were made

  336. to experience with God

  337. and one another.

  338. So my second question

  339. is this,

  340. why would we have

  341. unquenchable longings

  342. that can't be satisfied

  343. in this world

  344. unless we were made

  345. for another world?

  346. Unless this is not our home,

  347. unless there is

  348. some other world

  349. where we will truly

  350. be at home.

  351. The third thing

  352. that we see

  353. about our true home

  354. is this.

  355. Our true home

  356. is the place

  357. where all of our work

  358. is fulfilled

  359. or where all of our work

  360. finds its fulfillment.

  361. You know,

  362. the Bible tells us

  363. that all human beings

  364. were made to work.

  365. We were made to work.

  366. You know,

  367. we need to be productive

  368. in our lives.

  369. We need to be generative.

  370. We need to be creating.

  371. We need to be cultivating.

  372. We need to be

  373. making things happen.

  374. And what we know

  375. psychologically

  376. is that if we don't do that,

  377. that we stagnate.

  378. And eventually,

  379. we not only stagnate,

  380. we die.

  381. You have to get up

  382. out of bed

  383. and go do

  384. in the world.

  385. It's how you were made.

  386. And yet,

  387. our work

  388. is also filled

  389. with frustration

  390. and futility.

  391. And I don't have

  392. to convince you of that.

  393. You know that.

  394. The Bible says

  395. this is because

  396. our world

  397. is under a curse.

  398. You know,

  399. human beings

  400. rebelled against God

  401. and one of the

  402. ramifications of that

  403. is that when we go

  404. to work,

  405. we have to contend

  406. with thorns

  407. and thistles

  408. and hard soil.

  409. Now,

  410. what's that all about?

  411. What does that look like

  412. since most of us

  413. are not in

  414. agricultural trades?

  415. What does that look like?

  416. Well,

  417. it looks like a few things.

  418. It looks like this.

  419. No matter what we build,

  420. it will always fall apart.

  421. Right?

  422. The greatest

  423. ancient

  424. architectural wonders

  425. from past centuries

  426. are now either

  427. dust

  428. or tourist traps.

  429. And somebody else

  430. has come along

  431. and built something

  432. on top.

  433. Names of buildings

  434. change.

  435. Everything crumbles.

  436. Futility also means

  437. that we will always

  438. be able to envision

  439. more than we can

  440. ever actually accomplish.

  441. Now,

  442. what a cruel joke

  443. that is.

  444. Oh,

  445. so painful.

  446. You know,

  447. you think of

  448. the Habsburg court

  449. composer

  450. Antonio Salieri,

  451. painfully insecure,

  452. knowing deep down

  453. that his work

  454. is only mediocre.

  455. And then you think

  456. of him

  457. hearing the music

  458. of this

  459. no-name,

  460. impoverished guy

  461. named Mozart.

  462. And in that moment,

  463. realizing that

  464. he will never

  465. be able to match that.

  466. it also means

  467. that our work

  468. is going to be

  469. subject to forces

  470. outside of our control.

  471. You know,

  472. you deal with a

  473. frustrating,

  474. impossible boss.

  475. You have a

  476. meaningful collaboration

  477. with somebody

  478. and then they

  479. stab you in the back.

  480. You're doing

  481. the best you can,

  482. your team is doing

  483. the best they can,

  484. your boss is doing

  485. the best they can,

  486. but you work

  487. within a broken

  488. bureaucracy.

  489. You're a dented,

  490. bent cog

  491. in a gigantic,

  492. creaky machine.

  493. Laying it on thick.

  494. And you realize

  495. it's outside of your

  496. control.

  497. Thorns and thistles

  498. and hard soil

  499. mean that you will

  500. never achieve

  501. perfection.

  502. You'll never

  503. achieve perfection.

  504. perfection.

  505. I'm told a story

  506. from Kaylee

  507. on our team

  508. in Brussels.

  509. In the town square

  510. there is the town hall

  511. and the town hall

  512. is this masterpiece

  513. of Gothic architecture.

  514. But as the story goes,

  515. the architect,

  516. upon completion

  517. of this massive,

  518. beautiful structure,

  519. realized when looking

  520. at it that the front door

  521. was off center

  522. of his life's work.

  523. So he climbed

  524. to the top

  525. of the tower

  526. and threw himself

  527. off to his death.

  528. Life was no longer

  529. worth living.

  530. Now, whether or not

  531. that story is true,

  532. apparently there's a star

  533. on the spot

  534. where he landed.

  535. I don't know,

  536. you can go check it out.

  537. But regardless

  538. of whether the story

  539. is true,

  540. the point still stands.

  541. Our work will always

  542. be off center.

  543. We'll always have

  544. to contend with that.

  545. Perfection is not possible

  546. in this world.

  547. And in the face

  548. of such futility,

  549. I think people go

  550. one of two directions.

  551. People either double down

  552. and they become workaholics.

  553. If I try harder,

  554. if I work longer hours,

  555. maybe I can overcome

  556. the futility.

  557. I think other people

  558. eventually check out.

  559. They get so cynical

  560. and so burned out

  561. from butting up

  562. against things

  563. that they have

  564. no control over

  565. that they just

  566. sort of check out.

  567. And they slide

  568. into some job

  569. that they can do

  570. with half their brain

  571. turned off.

  572. And they anesthetize

  573. themselves and they

  574. sort of go through life

  575. from pleasure to pleasure,

  576. escape to escape,

  577. but their job

  578. no longer has

  579. any real meaning.

  580. In the face

  581. of such futility,

  582. it's hard to imagine

  583. continuing in a life

  584. of work.

  585. That is,

  586. unless we realize

  587. that our work

  588. was actually made

  589. for another world.

  590. Right?

  591. Verse 26,

  592. it's this amazing reference.

  593. A great processional

  594. brings all of the glory

  595. and the honor

  596. of the nations

  597. through the gates

  598. of the New Jerusalem

  599. to become a part

  600. of the architecture

  601. of the New Jerusalem.

  602. This is an amazing image.

  603. The work of human hands

  604. and the work of God's hands

  605. joined together as one.

  606. All of the things

  607. that we strive for,

  608. all of the effort

  609. that we put into it,

  610. joined with God

  611. who can overcome obstacles,

  612. who can achieve perfection.

  613. It's the completion

  614. of all human endeavor.

  615. Because in the New Jerusalem,

  616. the curse has finally

  617. been lifted.

  618. We'll no longer

  619. be able to envision

  620. more than we can imagine.

  621. In fact,

  622. every day we will see

  623. more than we ever

  624. dreamed possible.

  625. There's that wonderful

  626. little story

  627. from J.R.R. Tolkien,

  628. Leaf by Niggle,

  629. that I think parallels

  630. his own life

  631. in many ways.

  632. Niggle is an artist

  633. in a society

  634. that does not

  635. appreciate art.

  636. I mean,

  637. that's pretty tragic.

  638. And he's an artist

  639. who has this vision

  640. of a tree

  641. in his mind.

  642. He's possessed

  643. by this vision

  644. and he's obsessed

  645. with trying

  646. to bring it about.

  647. And so he spends

  648. his whole life

  649. trying to paint

  650. this tree perfectly,

  651. but distractions

  652. take him away

  653. and futility

  654. thwarts him

  655. at every turn.

  656. And so he spends

  657. his whole life

  658. trying to paint

  659. the tree

  660. in his mind

  661. only to die

  662. and to have

  663. his unfinished

  664. painting

  665. abandoned,

  666. largely forgotten,

  667. even at one point

  668. used to patch

  669. a leaky roof.

  670. And then after

  671. his death,

  672. Niggle finds himself

  673. in a beautiful

  674. countryside.

  675. And he begins

  676. to realize

  677. with amazement

  678. that this

  679. is the land

  680. of his vision.

  681. And then he looks

  682. and he sees

  683. the tree.

  684. But this isn't

  685. just a painting.

  686. It's the real thing.

  687. The question

  688. is this,

  689. why would we

  690. be able to dream

  691. such fantastic dreams

  692. unless they

  693. might be realized

  694. in another world?

  695. Maybe we're not

  696. dreaming about

  697. this world.

  698. Maybe we're dreaming

  699. about the world

  700. that we are meant

  701. for.

  702. By the way,

  703. this is the great

  704. gift that artists

  705. give us.

  706. Because they,

  707. more than anyone

  708. else,

  709. they,

  710. more than anyone

  711. else,

  712. are able to help

  713. us imagine

  714. what is possible.

  715. And you name it,

  716. it is possible

  717. in the New Jerusalem.

  718. So our true home

  719. is a place

  720. where creation

  721. is renewed.

  722. It's a place

  723. where longings

  724. are satisfied.

  725. It's a place

  726. where our work

  727. finally finds

  728. its fulfillment,

  729. its completion.

  730. The glory

  731. that we may

  732. have desired here

  733. is actually

  734. meant for Him.

  735. The fourth

  736. and final thing

  737. we see about

  738. this true home

  739. is that this

  740. is the place

  741. where humanity

  742. is restored.

  743. Our humanity.

  744. Everyone I know

  745. wants world peace.

  746. Everyone I know

  747. wants world peace.

  748. But in spite

  749. of the myth

  750. of progress,

  751. we seem no closer

  752. to peace today

  753. than we were

  754. a thousand years ago.

  755. I think our own

  756. country feels

  757. more politically

  758. and racially divided

  759. than ever.

  760. The problem is

  761. I think people

  762. have said that

  763. in every generation.

  764. Revelation 22

    Revelation 22:2

  765. verse 2

  766. shows us

  767. the tree of life

  768. which sits

  769. in the heart

  770. of the city.

  771. And it says

  772. that the leaves

  773. of this tree

  774. are for the healing

  775. of the nations

  776. which is a beautiful image.

  777. And earlier

  778. in Revelation

  779. we're told

  780. that the new Jerusalem

  781. will be a place

  782. where people

  783. from every tribe

  784. and tongue

  785. and nation

  786. are joined together

  787. in the worship

  788. of Christ.

  789. Right?

  790. So the leaves

  791. aren't just for the healing

  792. of our nation

  793. or our nation

  794. and the nations

  795. that we happen to like.

  796. It's for the healing

  797. of all of the nations

  798. because the purpose

  799. of the gospel

  800. was always

  801. to go out

  802. to every tribe

  803. tongue

  804. and nation

  805. to gather people

  806. from every corner

  807. of the earth

  808. together as one.

  809. And so the new Jerusalem

  810. like any city

  811. is multi-ethnic

  812. it's multicultural

  813. it's multilingual

  814. but unlike any other city

  815. all humanity

  816. is unified.

  817. So you have perfect unity

  818. and perfect diversity

  819. together.

  820. Remember at Pentecost

  821. that miracle

  822. we read about

  823. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  824. the birth of the church

  825. when God pours

  826. His Holy Spirit

  827. out on His people

  828. in fulfillment

  829. of ancient promises.

  830. And remember

  831. what happens

  832. when the Spirit

  833. is poured out.

  834. It does not say

  835. and everyone began

  836. speaking the same language.

  837. Everyone became

  838. of the same culture.

  839. The true miracle

  840. of Pentecost

  841. is that everybody

  842. hears the gospel

  843. in their own language.

  844. In fact

  845. there was never a time

  846. in the history of the church

  847. when it was not multilingual.

  848. There was never a time

  849. in the history of the church

  850. when it was not multicultural

  851. multi-ethnic.

  852. This has always been

  853. the reality of God's church

  854. and we see why.

  855. Because God's desire

  856. is that the greatest

  857. most glorious

  858. most beautiful artifacts

  859. from all the cultures

  860. and ethnicities

  861. and languages

  862. around the world

  863. that all of that

  864. would adorn

  865. the new Jerusalem.

  866. That it would all

  867. become a part

  868. of the glory

  869. of our true home.

  870. It's intentional.

  871. The new Jerusalem

  872. is a place

  873. where all people

  874. will live together

  875. in peace.

  876. I love Zechariah's

  877. description of it.

  878. He says

  879. this will be a place

  880. where the streets

  881. of the city

  882. shall be filled

  883. with the sounds

  884. of children playing.

  885. If you look

  886. at the larger reference

  887. he says

  888. old men and women

  889. will sit in the streets.

  890. You can imagine

  891. them sitting

  892. in benches

  893. and talking

  894. and you'll hear

  895. the sounds

  896. of children playing.

  897. In other words

  898. it's a great place

  899. to grow old in.

  900. It's a great place

  901. to grow up in.

  902. It's the kind of city

  903. we all wish

  904. we could live in.

  905. It's our true home.

  906. And you have

  907. all of humanity

  908. gathered around

  909. the light

  910. and the warmth

  911. of God himself

  912. who by the death

  913. and resurrection

  914. of Jesus Christ

  915. has finally made peace

  916. not only between humans

  917. and himself

  918. but also between humans

  919. and one another.

  920. He's made reconciliation

  921. possible

  922. so that he can finally

  923. be the God

  924. who dwells

  925. in the midst

  926. of his people

  927. all of his people.

  928. So the fourth question

  929. is this

  930. why would we long

  931. for peace

  932. unless we were made

  933. for a world

  934. where all humanity

  935. lives together as one?

  936. Right so this is

  937. what our true home

  938. is like.

  939. This is a place

  940. where creation

  941. is renewed.

  942. This is a place

  943. where longings

  944. are satisfied.

  945. It's a place

  946. where work

  947. is fulfilled.

  948. It's a place

  949. where humanity

  950. is restored.

  951. And the reason

  952. that we're saying

  953. all this

  954. to kind of

  955. bring all this

  956. home

  957. is that the aim

  958. of all human life

  959. is to find

  960. our way home.

  961. The aim

  962. of all human life

  963. is to find

  964. our way

  965. to this city.

  966. You know

  967. it reminds me

  968. of Bob Goff

  969. who tells

  970. this story

  971. of himself

  972. and a few friends

  973. participating

  974. in a trans-Pacific

  975. sailing race

  976. which is a pretty

  977. big deal.

  978. I'm not a sailor

  979. but I can imagine

  980. this would be

  981. quite challenging.

  982. And Goff

  983. says that he

  984. and his friends

  985. were woefully

  986. underprepared

  987. for this undertaking

  988. but they set out

  989. anyway

  990. on this trans-Pacific

  991. race

  992. and he says

  993. they get lost

  994. numerous times

  995. they take all kinds

  996. of twists and turns

  997. they have to do

  998. course correction

  999. after course correction

  1000. he says

  1001. it's at times

  1002. brutal

  1003. and exhausting

  1004. and then they

  1005. finally make it

  1006. to port

  1007. they finally make it

  1008. home in the early

  1009. hours of the morning

  1010. and Goff

  1011. talks about

  1012. his boat

  1013. finally pulling

  1014. into the marina

  1015. they're all exhausted

  1016. and he says

  1017. that the silence

  1018. is broken

  1019. by a booming voice

  1020. over a loud speaker

  1021. it's a tradition

  1022. in this race

  1023. that whenever a boat

  1024. makes it home

  1025. no matter if it's

  1026. two or three o'clock

  1027. in the morning

  1028. that this old announcer

  1029. same guy who's been

  1030. doing it for decades

  1031. announces the boat

  1032. and announces

1033. all of the crew members

1034. and so they're sailing in

  1035. and this announcer

  1036. voice booms out

  1037. and it says

  1038. then he started

  1039. announcing the names

  1040. of our ragtag crew

  1041. like he was introducing

  1042. heads of state

  1043. he didn't tell everyone

  1044. we didn't know

  1045. which way was north

1046. or about all the other

  1047. mess ups

  1048. instead he just

  1049. welcomed us in

  1050. from the adventure

1051. like a proud father would

  1052. when he was done

  1053. there was a pause

1054. and then in a sincere voice

  1055. his last words

  1056. to the entire crew

  1057. were these

  1058. friends

  1059. it's been a long trip

  1060. welcome home

  1061. the point is

1062. I think that one day

  1063. for those of us

1064. who have put our faith

  1065. in Jesus Christ

  1066. I think we're going to

  1067. have such words

  1068. spoken over us

1069. as we enter the gates

  1070. of the new Jerusalem

1071. and the reason I'm telling

  1072. you all of this

1073. is so that I can ask you

  1074. this question

  1075. what is the aim

  1076. of your life

  1077. what's the aim

  1078. of your life

  1079. what is your life

  1080. aiming at

  1081. are you aiming

  1082. only at the things

  1083. of this world

  1084. are you aiming

1085. only at this present reality

  1086. or are you aiming

  1087. beyond this world

  1088. to our true home

  1089. and I would say

  1090. that this is maybe

  1091. the most important

  1092. question of your life

  1093. are you off course

  1094. in your aim

  1095. have you lost

1096. a sense of true north

  1097. if that's true

1098. then now is the time

  1099. for a course correction

  1100. now is the time

  1101. to come to Jesus

  1102. and to ask

  1103. his forgiveness

1104. and to give your life

  1105. to him

  1106. and to ask him

  1107. to set you back

  1108. on course

  1109. if you aim

  1110. only at this world

  1111. if you live like

  1112. there's nothing

  1113. beyond this world

  1114. your life is never

  1115. going to make sense

  1116. you're going to rage

  1117. against death

  1118. you're going to have

  1119. longings that you

  1120. can't satisfy

  1121. you're going to

  1122. dream dreams

  1123. that can't be fulfilled

  1124. and it's never

  1125. going to make sense

  1126. but more than that

  1127. if you aim

  1128. only at this world

  1129. and this is

  1130. counterintuitive

  1131. if you are aiming

  1132. only at this world

  1133. then you will actually

  1134. be of very little

  1135. use to this world

  1136. you won't be

  1137. very useful

  1138. the reason is simple

  1139. this world

  1140. needs people

  1141. of hope

  1142. this world

  1143. needs people

  1144. of undying

  1145. unquenchable hope

  1146. you know people

  1147. who can face

  1148. suffering

  1149. and death

  1150. with hope

  1151. people who can

  1152. bear the weight

  1153. of unmet longings

  1154. with hope

  1155. people who can work

  1156. in long

  1157. difficult

  1158. often thankless

  1159. jobs

  1160. with hope

  1161. people who can do

  1162. the hard

  1163. grueling

  1164. long term

  1165. work

  1166. of peacemaking

  1167. and bridge

  1168. building

  1169. and reconciliation

  1170. and never

  1171. lose hope

  1172. that's what

  1173. the world

  1174. needs

  1175. and it's the

  1176. promise of a

  1177. home in the

  1178. future

  1179. that gives us

  1180. hope

  1181. for this

  1182. home

  1183. in the

  1184. present

  1185. and this is

  1186. why we are

  1187. here by the way

  1188. as Church of the

  1189. Advent

  1190. this is why

  1191. we exist

  1192. because we want

  1193. to be people

  1194. of hope

  1195. in Washington

  1196. D.C.

  1197. for Washington

  1198. D.C.

  1199. we want to seek

  1200. the flourishing

  1201. of the city

  1202. we want to push

  1203. back the chaos

  1204. and the darkness

  1205. until Jesus

  1206. comes again

  1207. because we know

  1208. that when Jesus

  1209. comes again

  1210. he is the one

  1211. who will make

  1212. all things new

  1213. and then he will

  1214. wipe away

  1215. every tear

  1216. he will wipe away

  1217. every tear

  1218. and he will say

  1219. to each of us

  1220. friends

  1221. it's been a long

  1222. trip

  1223. welcome home

  1224. let's pray

  1225. Lord we desire

  1226. to be people

  1227. of hope

  1228. but not just

  1229. an earthly hope

  1230. we long

  1231. we long for

  1232. a supernatural

  1233. hope

  1234. an inexplicable

  1235. hope

  1236. we long

  1237. to drink

  1238. from the deep

  1239. well

  1240. of your gospel

  1241. that it might

  1242. fill us with

  1243. joy and hope

  1244. and faith

  1245. despite our

  1246. circumstances

  1247. promises

  1248. and we pray

  1249. that this

  1250. hope

  1251. sourced in

  1252. you

  1253. would not

  1254. just be for

  1255. us

  1256. but that it

  1257. would be a

  1258. blessing to

  1259. the city

  1260. that it would

  1261. be a blessing

  1262. to our

  1263. neighbors

  1264. that it would

  1265. be a blessing

  1266. to our

  1267. families

  1268. that it would

  1269. be a blessing

  1270. to the places

  1271. where we work

  1272. that it would

  1273. be a blessing

  1274. to all of those

  1275. we come in

  1276. contact with

  1277. that this would

  1278. be a place

  1279. that is a

  1280. wellspring

  1281. of hope

  1282. because we

  1283. have our eyes

  1284. fixed on our

  1285. true home

  1286. we pray this

  1287. not only for

  1288. our good
