  1. Good evening to all of you.

  2. I know most of you.

  3. My name's Tommy.

  4. I'm a pastor here.

  5. And strangely, I love Ash Wednesday.

  6. Even though the focus is maybe not our favorite topic, the idea that everyone in this room is going to die a premature death.

  7. Not the kind of thing that we like to dwell on.

  8. Nevertheless, it's true.

  9. But at this point in the service, we want to turn our attention to God's Word.

  10. And I know that there are different people in this room coming from different places.

  11. And maybe even spiritually, I'm assuming you're in very different places.

  12. Some of you may be here tonight and you feel full of faith.

  13. You feel like God is near you.

  14. He's present in your life.

  15. You feel alive and exhilarated by what God is doing in your life.

  16. And full of passion for the kingdom.

  17. And if that is you, then praise the Lord.

  18. Lord, I'm so glad that is true.

  19. And we're going to pray and ask God that that just continues in your life.

  20. For the rest of us who may feel like faith is a struggle.

  21. If you feel like God is very distant, that your faith at some point grew cold.

  22. If your prayer life feels like an exercise in futility, then Lent is the season for you.

  23. And I'm glad that you're here.

  24. Because Lent is a time when we focus uniquely on our relationship with God.

  25. And when we talk about our relationship with God, it is supposed to be a relationship that is life-giving and intimate and love-filled.

  26. And yet, I think sometimes that's not our experience.

  27. When we look at the common images used to describe the relationship that God desires to have with us, one of the most common images is the image of a marriage.

  28. A lifelong, intimate, committed relationship of mutual love.

  29. And yet, I think that sometimes that's not our experience.

  30. So, if you don't have that kind of relationship with God, then something is getting in the way.

  31. Because we know that that's what God wants for us and with us.

  32. And so, Lent is a good time for us to ask, as we look inward and as we come before the Lord, times like this,

  33. what's getting in the way of that relationship with God?

  34. And that's why we're looking at Isaiah chapter 58 briefly before we receive ashes.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  35. Because this is a place where God's people are complaining about this very problem.

  36. They're complaining that their relationship with God has grown cold and distant.

  37. And it shows us two reasons why this kind of thing can happen.

  38. Let me ask God's blessing on this time.

  39. And then we'll look briefly at those two reasons.

  40. Lord, we do ask that as we come before you, that this would not just be an exercise in empty religion.

  41. But we're here because we know on some deep level that we need an encounter with you.

  42. And we know that that can only happen through your word.

  43. And so, we pray that your word would facilitate this interaction.

  44. Lord, that it would open our hearts and that it would bring you into our midst.

  45. That we might see you face to face, Lord.

  46. We pray this in your son's holy name.

  47. Amen.

  48. So, Isaiah 58, what are the reasons, what are the things that get in the way of us having this kind of warm,

  49. intimate, life-giving relationship with God that I think probably most of us in this room wish we could have?

  50. One of the things that I learned in marriage, and you definitely don't have to be married to learn this kind of thing.

  51. Just for a person like me, it took that to teach this to me.

  52. But some of you already know this.

  53. But one of the things that I had to learn in marriage is that when it comes to showing your love for somebody, words are never enough.

  54. And I don't mean that words don't matter.

  55. Words do matter.

  56. But if, over time, the only way that you express love to your spouse is through words,

  57. very quickly those words start to lose their meaning.

  58. And they start to sound hollow.

  59. And so what I had to learn is that if you really want to make somebody feel loved,

  60. you have to figure out what makes them feel loved.

  61. You have to figure out how to show love in ways that they're going to recognize and receive as love.

  62. So a few examples in our marriage, my wife Laura, I know that if at the end of the day,

  63. if we get our kids down, which is its own kind of small miracle,

  64. and then we have some time left and some energy left,

  65. I know that if I, instead of pulling out my phone or flipping on a show or diving into a book,

  66. I know that if I look at her and we sit down and I ask what's on her mind, what's on her heart,

  67. what's she thinking about, and I devote time and energy,

  68. and we sit there and I listen and I care about the things that she cares about,

  69. and I help her process some of the things that are on her mind,

  70. I know that she's going to feel tremendously loved by that.

  71. It doesn't take much.

  72. I know that if I proactively, miracle of miracles, plan babysitting down the road in the future at some point,

  73. and maybe even plan something for us to do,

  74. she's going to feel tremendously loved by that relatively small gesture.

  75. I know that the things that she works on are very important to her,

  76. and if I just show some support, genuine encouragement and support,

  77. toward the things that she's working on, that makes her feel loved.

  78. And so I know that my words matter to her, but what I've learned is that these things that I'm able to do,

  79. and many of them don't require a whole lot,

  80. they convey so much more powerfully the genuineness of my love,

  81. and they result in us feeling a lot closer and more connected.

  82. So the point is, if you want to make somebody feel loved,

  83. and you want to feel a connection with them, you can't just use words.

  84. You have to show that love in tangible ways.

  85. And the reason that I say this is because the same is true of our relationship with God.

  86. The best way to show our love for God is to love the people that God loves.

  87. It's to love the people that God loves.

  88. So in our passage, Isaiah 58, verses 2 and 3,

    Isaiah 58:2

  89. these people are praying daily to God.

  90. They want to feel close to God.

  91. It says they, quote, delight to draw near Him.

  92. And then it says in verse 3, we've humbled ourselves and fasted and prayed.

  93. Why haven't you noticed?

  94. We're doing all the right things.

  95. We're going to church.

  96. We're fasting.

  97. We're putting ashes on our forehead.

  98. We're wearing uncomfortable clothing, sackcloth.

  99. We're doing all of the things.

  100. Right?

  101. We're observing all of the rituals.

  102. In other words, we're upholding our side of the deal.

  103. And somehow you're not showing up.

  104. And God essentially responds through Isaiah.

  105. He says essentially to Isaiah,

  106. give a full-throated shout

  107. and respond to the people this way.

  108. God says,

  109. you say that you love me

  110. and you say that you want to be close to me.

  111. You say that you want intimacy with me.

  112. But the people that I most care about,

  113. you ignore.

  114. They don't seem to matter to you at all.

  115. So God says, you know,

  116. you say that you love me

  117. and you look the part.

  118. You look pietistic.

  119. You look like I matter to you.

  120. You're wearing the right clothing

  121. and saying the right words.

  122. And yet you work your employees to death.

  123. And you pay them barely a minimum wage.

  124. And you don't offer health insurance

  125. or retirement benefits at all.

  126. He's like, you say that you love me.

  127. I hear the words.

  128. But then you go and you bicker

  129. over nothing.

  130. You gossip because you love drama.

  131. You go and you're nice to people's faces

  132. and then you criticize them behind their back

  133. and you make fun of them.

  134. God says, you say that you love me.

  135. You look the part.

  136. It sounds right.

  137. But you seem oblivious

  138. to the injustice that is all around you.

  139. So God's response is to essentially say

  140. there's a disconnect here.

  141. Like something doesn't add up.

  142. And then God says,

  143. is this not the fast that I choose?

  144. In other words,

  145. this is how I know that your love for me is genuine.

  146. I mean, the best way to know how to show love to somebody

  147. is to sit down and ask them,

  148. what are the things that I can do

  149. that make you feel loved?

  150. That's what God is talking about here.

  151. Here's the fast that I choose.

  152. Here's the expression of love and devotion

  153. that I recognize as genuine.

  154. That's what he's saying.

  155. If you truly love me,

  156. he says in verse 6,

  157. then don't just free

  158. oppressed people.

  159. Break the yoke.

  160. Deal with the systems and institutions

  161. that make oppression possible.

  162. Break the yoke.

  163. If you truly love me,

  164. he says,

  165. if you truly care about me,

  166. then in verse 7,

  167. don't just fast from certain kinds of food.

  168. If you're not going to eat that food,

  169. give it to somebody who needs it.

  170. Give it to somebody who's hungry.

  171. Better yet, he says,

  172. invite someone into your home

  173. and serve them that food.

  174. Maybe spend less money on clothes

  175. so that you can go clothe someone

  176. who doesn't have any.

  177. Cover their nakedness.

  178. That can also imply,

  179. don't just meet physical needs,

  180. but recognize that the deepest needs

  181. that people have

  182. often are connected to deep sources of shame.

  183. Minister to people's shame

  184. if you really love me.

  185. And this is important.

  186. Certainly spoke to me.

  187. The end of verse 7,

  188. God says,

  189. if you truly love me,

  190. don't hide from your own flesh.

  191. What does that mean?

  192. It took me a little while.

  193. Sometimes it's hardest to recognize

  194. the sins that are closest to true for us.

  195. Don't work so much

  196. that you neglect your family.

  197. Don't give yourself so much

  198. to other causes and pursuits

  199. that you neglect your friends,

  200. that you neglect your church community.

  201. Be available to your family.

  202. Not just physically,

  203. but emotionally,

  204. spiritually.

  205. Don't hide yourself

  206. from your own flesh.

  207. And the thing that connects

  208. all of these definitions of love

  209. is they all have to do

  210. with the way we treat the people

  211. right around us

  212. that God has put there.

  213. Right?

  214. So the first point is this.

  215. If you want to love

  216. and be loved by God,

  217. if you want to feel close to God

  218. and intimate with God,

  219. words are never going to be enough.

  220. Gestures like this are helpful,

  221. but they're never going to be enough.

  222. Right?

  223. God has given us neighbors,

  224. people he puts in our lives,

  225. and guess what?

  226. God loves and delights in those people

  227. more than we can possibly imagine.

  228. And if we don't show some amount

  229. of love and concern

  230. for those people

  231. that God is so crazy about,

  232. then no matter how much

  233. we try to tell God

  234. that we love him,

  235. our words are going to ring hollow.

  236. And this is one reason

  237. our relationship with God

  238. might grow cold or distant.

  239. If we think that we can love God

  240. without loving any of the people

  241. around us in our lives

  242. that God loves.

  243. All right?

  244. So that's reason number one.

  245. Reason number two

  246. that we see in this passage

  247. is a little more subtle,

  248. but it's every bit as significant.

  249. Either reason number one,

  250. we're failing to love God's people,

  251. that's what causes distance,

  252. or reason number two,

  253. we are failing to love

  254. in God's way,

  255. God's way of loving.

  256. So some of you are vegan,

  257. and some of you are vegan

  258. based on principles, right?

  259. You have an ethical conviction

  260. based on what you believe

  261. about the food industry

  262. and whatnot

  263. that you want to be a vegan.

  264. That's a lifestyle

  265. that you've committed to.

  266. So imagine there's somebody

  267. in your life

  268. and they really want

  269. to make you feel loved,

  270. and they say,

  271. I'm going to make you

  272. this extravagant meal,

  273. and I'm going to go all out,

  274. you know,

  275. kind of like Babette's Feast style.

  276. If any of you have seen that movie

  277. or read that book,

  278. I'm just going to, you know,

  279. spare no expense,

  280. lots of money,

  281. lots of time,

  282. lots of energy,

  283. and the night finally gets there

  284. and they plop this plate

  285. down in front of you

  286. and it's a big old T-bone steak.

  287. Right?

  288. And you would look down at that

  289. and the question would be,

  290. you know,

  291. they're looking at you expectantly,

  292. do you feel how much I love you?

  293. And of course,

  294. if you're honest,

  295. you might be moved by the effort,

  296. but at the end of the day,

  297. that dish does not convey love

  298. at all.

  299. It's in fact maybe the opposite

  300. because no matter how much money

  301. they spent on that food

  302. and no matter how much effort,

  303. no matter how high-end

  304. or grass-fed

  305. or well-marbled that steak may be,

  306. at the end of the day,

  307. it's a steak.

  308. And that meal does not communicate love to you

  309. if your commitment ethically

  310. is to be vegan.

  311. And what that means is

  312. this person is trying to love you,

  313. but they're not doing it in your way.

  314. In other words,

  315. they're ignoring your principles.

  316. They're ignoring your character.

  317. They're ignoring commitments

  318. that matter to you.

  319. That's not loving.

  320. I say this on a day

  321. when some of you are fasting.

  322. I apologize for that.

  323. But loving God

  324. doesn't just mean

  325. loving the people that God loves,

  326. which matters.

  327. It means loving the way that God loves,

  328. which means loving according to God's standards,

  329. God's character,

  330. God's commitments,

  331. God's principles.

  332. You know, I've heard so often

  333. people quote Isaiah 58

  334. and say,

  335. well, what this shows,

  336. I mean, this justifies the idea

  337. that God actually doesn't care

  338. about our personal lives.

  339. He doesn't care about our morals.

  340. All of that is just empty religiosity.

  341. What God really cares about

  342. is social justice

  343. and ending oppression.

  344. That's all God cares about.

  345. And so if we do that,

  346. no matter who we sleep with

  347. or how we spend our money

  348. or our time,

  349. that's what matters to God.

  350. We are doing justice in the world.

  351. This proves it.

  352. All the rest is empty religion.

  353. But it says in verse 2

  354. that God's people are people

  355. who delight in His ways,

  356. who desire to do righteousness,

  357. who do not forsake the judgments

  358. or the commandments of their God.

  359. And then you have to look at

  360. the larger context of Isaiah chapter 58.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  361. Just before it,

  362. in Isaiah chapter 57,

    Isaiah 57 chapter mention

  363. which is a profoundly important chapter,

  364. it talks about the core problem

  365. of humanity.

  366. The core issue

  367. is not oppression or injustice,

  368. but idolatry.

  369. Worshiping other things in our lives

  370. instead of God.

  371. And what idolatry means

  372. is that we are driven by our desires.

  373. We are driven by our appetites.

  374. Right?

  375. Appetites like lust

  376. or greed

  377. or covetousness.

  378. And so things like injustice

  379. or poverty

  380. or oppression

  381. are symptoms.

  382. They're downstream

  383. from these

  384. uncontrollable appetites.

  385. Which result from the fact

  386. that we have given ourselves

  387. to false gods

  388. who can never satisfy

  389. our appetites.

  390. We're always hungry.

  391. We're always thirsty.

  392. We're always yearning.

  393. That's why we have injustice

  394. and oppression.

  395. And so God calls His people

  396. to be free from these idols

  397. and to worship Him alone

  398. and to have the kind of holiness

  399. and character

  400. that reflects His holiness

  401. and character.

  402. He says in Leviticus,

  403. Be holy for I am holy.

  404. And so this means

  405. the way that we use our money

  406. or our bodies

  407. or our resources,

  408. that all needs to reflect

  409. God's heart.

  410. So if we believe

  411. that we can love God

  412. simply by doing justice,

  413. but then we take liberties

  414. in redefining justice

  415. to fit whatever agenda

  416. or issue

  417. matters to us.

  418. If we seek justice

  419. in ways that disregard

  420. God's character

  421. and holiness,

  422. that's like serving

  423. a T-bone steak

  424. to a vegan.

  425. It doesn't matter

  426. how much money

  427. or effort it takes.

  428. It's not an act of love.

  429. In fact,

  430. I think it's profoundly unloving

  431. because it's profoundly

  432. self-focused.

  433. So loving God

  434. means loving God's people

  435. God's way.

  436. Loving God's people

  437. God's way.

  438. And this is not going to lead us

  439. and this is not only

  440. going to lead us

  441. to have a deeper sense

  442. of God's presence

  443. and love in our lives,

  444. but the amazing thing

  445. at the end of this passage

  446. is it says,

  447. if we love God's people

  448. God's way,

  449. it turns us

  450. into the kind of people

  451. this world most needs.

  452. It says in verse 10,

  453. then shall your light

  454. rise in the darkness

  455. and your gloom

  456. be as the noonday.

  457. You know what that means

  458. in more common terminology?

  459. Your life is going to

  460. glow in the dark.

  461. You're going to live

  462. a luminous life.

  463. You're going to shine

  464. into the darkness

  465. of this world.

  466. Because listen,

  467. this world has enough

  468. empty religiosity

  469. and piety.

  470. But this world also

  471. has enough social action

  472. campaigns and charity

  473. organizations.

  474. What the world really needs

  475. is people who glow

  476. in the dark.

  477. People who radiate

  478. the love of God

  479. into the world

  480. like beacons of hope,

  481. like lighthouses

  482. in the darkness,

  483. like lamps in a dark wood.

  484. That's what this world needs.

  485. So as we enter

  486. this season of Lent together,

  487. which this marks

  488. the beginning

  489. of our Lenten journey,

  490. maybe you could think

  491. of this like a marriage

  492. retreat between you

  493. and God.

  494. And ask yourself

  495. this question,

  496. am I loving God's people

  497. God's way?

  498. Am I showing love to God

  499. in ways that matter to Him?

  500. Right?

  501. Some of us may need

  502. to focus during this season

  503. on loving God's people more

  504. by engaging in the needs

  505. and the people around us.

  506. That could be the hungry

  507. and the homeless.

  508. It could also be

  509. our own families.

  510. Serving the people

  511. God has put in our lives.

  512. And listen,

  513. pastors need to hear that

  514. more than anybody else.

  515. Right?

  516. The kind of people

  517. who are ready

  518. and available

  519. for people in their church

  520. but neglect their own kids.

  521. We all need to hear that.

  522. Maybe this means

  523. just making extra food

  524. when you cook

  525. and thinking of people

  526. you can bless

  527. with that extra food.

  528. I had a good friend

  529. in seminary.

  530. This is what she did

  531. every week on her Sabbath.

  532. She would make food

  533. and she would make

  534. twice as much

  535. as she needed

  536. and she would just

  537. randomly pick people

  538. to give it out to.

  539. And I was the recipient

  540. of some of those blessings

  541. and I can tell you

  542. I felt deeply loved.

  543. Maybe it simply means

  544. working fewer hours

  545. or turning our phones off

  546. so that we can be more

  547. emotionally available

  548. to people.

  549. Others of us need

  550. a different focus

  551. this Lent.

  552. Maybe we need to focus

  553. more on living

  554. and loving God's way.

  555. Right?

  556. Maybe you do need

  557. to fast from sugar

  558. or caffeine

  559. or alcohol

  560. because maybe

  561. these things

  562. are leading your appetites

  563. to become out of control.

  564. Maybe you need

  565. more control

  566. over those appetites.

  567. Maybe you need

  568. to learn how to seek

  569. the Lord for satisfaction

  570. rather than these things.

  571. Right?

  572. Maybe there are areas

  573. of deep sin

  574. that we need to face

  575. and confess

  576. and turn away from

  577. in our lives.

  578. So some of us

  579. need to focus

  580. on loving God's people more.

  581. Some of us need

  582. to focus on loving God's way more.

  583. Many of us

  584. probably just like me

  585. need a little bit of both.

  586. The last thing I'll say

  587. is this.

  588. If you are here

  589. and you don't have

  590. a relationship

  591. with God at all

  592. and by some strange

  593. twist of providence

  594. you find yourself here

  595. on an Ash Wednesday service.

  596. the least seeker sensitive service

  597. of the Anglican year.

  598. And maybe you're here

  599. and you don't have

  600. a relationship with God.

  601. Before you do anything

  602. that I just said

  603. you need to read

  604. Isaiah chapter 59

    Isaiah 59 chapter mention

  605. which comes right after

  606. chapter 58.

  607. Because in that chapter

  608. this is where he says

  609. that we on our own

  610. are utterly powerless

  611. against the idolatry

  612. and the oppression

  613. and the injustice

  614. in our world.

  615. And so God says

  616. because you're powerless

  617. because the situation

  618. is hopeless for you

  619. one day I myself

  620. am going to come.

  621. My arm

  622. will accomplish

  623. salvation for you.

  624. One day

  625. a redeemer

  626. is going to come.

  627. And we're here tonight

  628. because we know

  629. who that redeemer is.

  630. Jesus Christ

  631. who died on the cross

  632. not only to save us

  633. from sin and death

  634. not only to take away

  635. the fear that we have

  636. of the premature death

  637. that we will one day die

  638. but also to invite us

  639. into a loving

  640. intimate relationship

  641. with God himself.

  642. And so if you've never

  643. come to Jesus before

  644. this is a perfect night.

  645. Lent is a perfect season

  646. for you to come to Jesus

  647. in prayer

  648. to ask him to forgive

  649. all of the sin

  650. in your life

  651. and then to receive

  652. the love and the forgiveness

  653. that God desires

  654. to pour

  655. into your life.

  656. Let's pray.

  657. Lord we thank you

  658. for your word

  659. and we thank you

  660. for the hope

  661. and we need it.

  662. We need hope.

  663. We need truth.

  664. We need love.

  665. I pray that you would

  666. kindle in our hearts

  667. the embers

  668. that they would become flame

  669. that we would rediscover

  670. our passion for you

  671. that we would fall

  672. in love with you

  673. even as we know

  674. the love that you had

  675. for us

  676. from before

  677. the beginning of the world.

  678. And we pray this

  679. for our good Lord

  680. but ultimately

  681. for your glory

  682. that as we radiate

  683. your love and truth

  684. into the world

  685. you would be glorified.

  686. In your son's name.

  687. Amen.
