  1. Please be seated.

  2. Well, again, let me welcome you this morning.

  3. And especially those of you who are new or joining us for the first time or joining us

  4. for the first time in a while, we're delighted to have you.

  5. And we're delighted at the ability just to worship together in the flesh in person.

  6. I hope I never take that for granted again in my whole life.

  7. But every week, I'm so excited to be together in person.

  8. This is week two of the Home Campaign at Church of the Advent.

  9. And the Home Campaign was birthed out of many, many years of prayer.

  10. This was a church that 14 years ago, we were in a living room praying about what this church

  11. might become, and we prayed about making a long-term commitment to the city, a desire

  12. to love the city long-term.

  13. And as we have seen over the years, God has provided for us and enabled us to do that.

  14. And so now, as we look at that long-term commitment over the course of many generations past this

  15. one, we need a home.

  16. We need a home from which to love and serve this city, the people in this city.

  17. And so that's what this campaign is all about.

  18. It's about making good on that commitment.

  19. And many of us have already committed to this campaign.

  20. I've committed to the campaign.

  21. Our staff has committed.

  22. Our parish council's committed.

  23. Nobody's going to ask anyone to make a commitment today, but in a few weeks, in about three weeks,

  24. we are going to have an opportunity for everybody who would like to commit to being a part of this

  25. campaign to do that.

  26. And I'm really excited about that because, as we've said all along, I think this is a tremendous opportunity

  27. for our church.

  28. And it's an opportunity not just to get a building but to grow spiritually,

  29. to take the biggest step, the biggest leap, the biggest act of trust, I think, that we've ever done

  30. as a community.

  31. And so this is a huge opportunity for us to grow in our faith, to grow in our trust,

  32. particularly in how we think about stewardship and generosity.

  33. And one of the things that I've said all along is one of my core commitments to this process

  34. is that it be a spiritually healthy one, that it matters less to me whether we get a building,

  35. even how much we raise.

  36. The thing that matters most is whether or not we grow, whether or not on the other end of this,

  37. we look back and we say we've been deepened in our faith and matured in our trust in the Lord

  38. through this process.

  39. We are a stronger, more vitalized church that has a little bit more of a sense of how God is able to do

  40. the amazing things in our midst.

  41. And so that's what this process is all about.

  42. So we've been looking at a series over the past few weeks on stewardship, on faith, on trust.

  43. And this week we're looking at Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  44. It's a very well-known story.

  45. And this is a story about a man who I think seems to have it all.

  46. And it's the kind of person that I think most people in D.C. want to be, right?

  47. He has everything that, like, D.C. people want, right?

  48. He has…he's wealthy, he has influence, he has power, he has status, he has respect.

  49. He has all of the things that bring people who don't grow up in D.C. to a place like D.C.

  50. He has all of these things.

  51. And yet, for that very reason, this man's actually in grave spiritual danger.

  52. That's something that Jesus reveals over the course of this encounter,

  53. which means we may actually also be in spiritual danger.

  54. So what we're going to do is look at this encounter and we're going to answer these questions.

  55. What is the danger that we're talking about?

  56. How do we know if we are in danger?

  57. And then finally, what can we do about it?

  58. Let's pray and then we'll open God's Word together.

  59. Lord, we thank You for Your Word.

  60. Lord, we thank You that we can come with our distractions or maybe even not even wanting

  61. to be here or confused about why we're here or thinking we know what we need.

  62. And yet, You're the kind of God who knows our hearts.

  63. And You're not just words on a page.

  64. You're living and active.

  65. And You can speak to us and You can do Your work in us through Word and Spirit.

  66. And so I pray that that would happen.

  67. Lord, I know I need that this morning.

  68. I need You to speak into my heart, Lord.

  69. And I pray that You do that for our good, Lord, so that we would grow, but also for Your glory.

  70. And pray this in Your Son's name.

  71. Amen.

  72. So first of all, what is the danger that we're talking about here?

  73. What's the danger that this man is in that we might be in?

  74. What's the concern?

  75. What's the concern?

  76. This passage shows us essentially that wealth can be spiritually dangerous, but probably

  77. not for the reason that most of us think.

  78. Even if you're not a Christian, most people know the verse that is in this passage, verse

  79. 25, for it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to

  80. enter the kingdom of God.

  81. Now, at first glance, what that seems to say is that rich people will never enter the kingdom

  82. of God, so there must be something inherently wrong with being rich.

  83. There must be something wrong with being wealthy.

  84. God must have a certain disdain for wealthy people that's going to keep them out.

  85. And yet what we need to see is that in the larger context of Scripture, that can't possibly

  86. be the way we interpret this verse.

  87. Because some of the prophets and some of the apostles were very poor, and God used them.

  88. Some of the early church leaders were poor.

  89. They had no social power.

  90. They were slaves.

  91. They were from minority classes.

  92. And yet God used them mightily.

  93. And yet we also know that we have wealthy people like Abraham, or David, or Solomon,

  94. or Matthew, or Lydia, or Joseph of Arimathea.

  95. These are wealthy people, powerful people, influential people.

  96. God used them powerfully right alongside the poor people.

  97. And so what we actually see is that the beauty of God's story is not that He only uses the poor

  98. or that He only uses the rich and powerful.

  99. The beauty of God's story is that He can use anyone and everyone to further His kingdom.

  100. And He weaves all kinds of people into His story.

  101. Okay, so it can't mean that.

  102. So then what does Jesus mean with this verse about wealth and a camel and a needle?

  103. Well, the clue comes from the context of the passage.

  104. If we look at what comes just before this encounter, Jesus has just told a parable about two men praying in the temple.

  105. And it's no coincidence that Luke places that in the same section here.

  106. One man in Jesus' parable comes into the temple, and he's a proud man.

  107. And he says,

  108. I thank God that I'm not like these sinners.

  109. I am a good man.

  110. And then in the parable, there's another person there who is so crushed by his guilt

  111. that all he can do is stare at the floor and beat his chest and say,

  112. God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

  113. And then Jesus says,

  114. that is the man who goes home justified before God.

  115. So the humble man is crying out for mercy.

  116. And mercy is, by definition, crying out for God to give you something that you don't deserve.

  117. Right?

  118. That's what mercy is.

  119. I don't deserve this, but I need it.

  120. The proud man doesn't believe that God needs to give him anything that he doesn't deserve.

  121. He believes that God should give him what he's owed.

  122. Right?

  123. And so another way of saying it is,

  124. the proud man is entirely self-sufficient.

  125. He's his own Savior.

  126. I'm standing before you, God.

  127. I've done all the right things, and I want you to give me what I'm owed.

  128. I upheld my end of the bargain.

  129. Now it's time for you to come through.

  130. So Jesus tells that parable.

  131. And then Jesus points to some children, probably children that were right there,

  132. and says,

  133. whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like one of these children shall not enter it.

  134. Now what's the point there?

  135. What's the difference between a child and an adult?

  136. Well, there are a number of differences.

  137. The one that we're thinking about today is a child, by definition, is not self-sufficient.

  138. You know, a child, by definition,

  139. needs an adult to take care of them and to meet their needs and to show them how to live.

  140. Right?

  141. Once you get to that point where you can do that on your own, you're no longer a child.

  142. You're an adult, by definition.

  143. And so the point is, if we look at all that context,

  144. what's the point of what's really going on here?

  145. One of the most dangerous lies when it comes to our relationship with God is the lie of self-sufficiency.

  146. It's the lie of self-sufficiency.

  147. And this goes all the way back to the fall.

  148. The Bible says that we were actually created to live with God and for God and to love God,

  149. that we were made for that relationship.

  150. You know, St. Augustine says that the Trinity is, at its core,

  151. three persons who each have an entirely other-oriented, self-giving, sacrificial,

  152. other-glorifying love for the other members of the Trinity.

  153. Right?

  154. And we were created to have that kind of relationship with God who made us as an extension of that kind of love.

  155. And so another way of saying it is, life only works if God is at the center of it.

  156. Right?

  157. Life only makes sense if God is at the center of it.

  158. If you think about a solar system, you know,

  159. why do all of the planets not constantly crash into each other?

  160. Why is there not abject chaos in our solar system?

  161. Well, it's because they all share the same central object around which they orbit.

  162. It is their relationship with the sun at the center that creates harmony in their relationships with one another.

  163. Right?

  164. Life is made to operate best when God is at the center of our orbit.

  165. And so the great lie of Satan is to say, that's not actually true.

  166. Life actually works better if you get to decide what's at the center of your life.

  167. And might I make a suggestion?

  168. Maybe you should be at the center of your life.

  169. And that great lie that says, you don't need God to be at the center of your life.

  170. God is great.

  171. God is a nice add-on.

  172. God can be a helpful accessory, but you don't need Him to be at the center of your life.

  173. That goes all the way back to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  174. That's the lie of self-sufficiency.

  175. So this is why wealth can be so dangerous.

  176. Because what does wealth do to that lie?

  177. Why?

  178. Well, it injects rocket fuel into it.

  179. You know?

  180. It pours gasoline on it.

  181. You know?

  182. It greatly, greatly reinforces and strengthens the plausibility that I really don't need anything outside of myself.

  183. Because it makes us more self-sufficient.

  184. Right?

  185. So, you know, if you're wealthy, and maybe you're sitting here thinking, I'm not really that wealthy.

  186. You know, this maybe applies to…I know that guy.

  187. It applies to him, not to me.

  188. If you're wealthy, and by that I mean you have a place to live in relative safety.

  189. Right?

  190. You know, we just this week are grieving the dramatic increase in gun violence in D.C.

  191. And people we know in our community who know and are grieving kids who were shot.

  192. Right?

  193. And killed.

  194. And that's awful.

  195. And the reality is that there are certain neighborhoods in D.C.

  196. where if you live in that neighborhood and you have a certain color skin,

  197. and it's like a death sentence.

  198. Right?

  199. So, if you live in relative safety,

  200. if you have a steady job, steady income,

  201. if you have some kind of a plan or you've thought about retirement,

  202. if retirement even is something that is in your sort of vocabulary,

  203. if you have access to health care, if you have access to education,

  204. if you have access to transportation,

  205. if you have the kind of flexibility that allows you to work from home if you need to,

  206. especially if like child care falls through,

  207. if you have access to grocery stores that sell fresh produce,

  208. 24-hour pharmacies where you can get pretty much any medication you need within a day or two,

  209. if you can get almost any product you can imagine delivered to your house within 24 to 48 hours

  210. with the click of a button,

  211. then chances are this probably applies to you.

  212. Because here's the question, like if those things are true about your life,

  213. how do you convince a person like that that they need anything?

  214. It's like most of my needs I don't even think about

  215. because they just get met automatically.

  216. Right?

  217. So, how do you convince a person like that that they need anything?

  218. That's the danger of wealth.

  219. So, that's the first point.

  220. Second question,

  221. how do we know if we're in danger?

  222. Because as I said,

  223. it's not…

  224. you're not automatically corrupt if you're wealthy.

  225. You're in danger.

  226. How do we know if we're in danger?

  227. Well, look at this man's question to Jesus.

  228. Good teacher,

  229. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  230. Right there, we know he's in danger.

  231. This guy's in danger.

  232. That one sentence,

  233. he's in danger.

  234. He's in the red zone.

  235. So, how do we know that?

  236. There are actually three signs.

  237. If we break down this question,

  238. there are three signs of danger

  239. that we need to be aware of in our own lives.

  240. The first thing that we see here

  241. is the way this man perceives Jesus.

  242. Right away, we see that this man perceives Jesus as an advisor,

  243. a good teacher,

  244. but not necessarily a savior.

  245. He calls him good teacher,

  246. and Jesus says,

  247. why do you call me good?

  248. Only God is good.

  249. And this is one of those great places

  250. where you see Jesus' genius

  251. in the fact that he is not above using irony.

  252. And this is a kind of dramatic irony here,

  253. because we know who Jesus is as the reader,

  254. and we're reading this,

  255. and we see what this man is saying,

  256. and so Jesus essentially says,

  257. why do you call me good?

  258. Are you saying that I'm God?

  259. And it's this great moment of irony here, right?

  260. And it's another way of saying,

  261. you have no idea who you're talking to, do you?

  262. This man fails to recognize Jesus for who he is

  263. because this man fails to recognize his own need.

  264. And if you don't recognize your own need for Jesus,

  265. it's going to be almost impossible for you to recognize

  266. the significance of Jesus.

  267. And this man is standing face to face with the Son of God,

  268. and Jesus is ready and willing.

  269. We know from other encounters,

  270. Jesus would be ready to give him the keys to the kingdom.

  271. If only he would ask.

  272. And this man essentially is saying,

  273. can I just get some advice?

  274. Can I get some advice?

  275. So one sign that we're in spiritual danger

  276. is when we start seeing Jesus

  277. as merely a source of advice or wisdom,

  278. but we don't really feel any need for salvation,

  279. any need for mercy.

  280. So, you know, the question is,

  281. if you don't feel that,

  282. why would you even give someone like Jesus

  283. a second thought?

  284. It's a kind of offshoot of the luxury

  285. of not really having to think about

  286. our need for salvation.

  287. I'm good.

  288. I don't really need much.

  289. So that's the first thing.

  290. The second sign that we see in this question

  291. that this man's in danger

  292. is that he clearly believes

  293. that he can do something to earn God's blessing.

  294. And, you know, we can say we don't believe this,

  295. but all of us in our hearts do.

  296. I teach this every Sunday,

  297. and yet I'm constantly catching myself

  298. actually believing

  299. that I probably can actually earn God's blessing,

  300. if I'm really honest.

  301. This man says, what must I do?

  302. You know, when you're wealthy,

  303. which means you have agency,

  304. which means you're able to sort of take steps

  305. to change your circumstances,

  306. you know, which means you can go out

  307. and spend money to meet your needs.

  308. When you're able to do that,

  309. it's easy to start to think

  310. that everything in the world has a price,

  311. that anything and everything could be acquired

  312. if you just know what to do,

  313. if you just know what the dollar amount is

  314. or what the behavioral requirement is.

  315. And it's easy to start thinking like that

  316. about eternal life and heaven.

  317. I don't know if you all read this,

  318. but years ago, Warren Buffett,

  319. you know, the billionaire,

  320. announced that he was going to donate

  321. 85% of his fortune to charity.

  322. He said, I'm going to donate 85%

  323. of all my fortune to charity.

  324. And all these people freaked out and said,

  325. you know, that's so amazing.

  326. They asked him about it,

  327. and he said this.

  328. This was the quote in the article.

  329. Well, there's more than one way to get to heaven,

  330. but this is a great way.

  331. And I think that there's a sense

  332. in which a lot of people in our culture

  333. do believe that.

  334. Somebody who gives that much money to charity,

  335. surely God's going to look at that

  336. and say, wow, that's one of the good ones.

  337. So another sign that we're in spiritual danger

  338. is when we begin thinking

  339. that we can earn blessings from God,

  340. that if we live the way God wants us to live,

  341. if we have enough faith,

  342. if we pray enough,

  343. that we should expect

  344. a reasonable amount of blessing

  345. from God in return.

  346. And how do we know we're thinking that way?

  347. Well, it's when we reach a point in our life

  348. where God is not doing what we want,

  349. where God does not come through,

  350. where we've prayed all the right prayers,

  351. where we've come to church,

  352. where we've done all the right things.

  353. We have clearly indicated

  354. that we have faith that God can do it.

  355. We've checked all the boxes,

  356. and God doesn't do it.

  357. The longing in your heart

  358. is the most godly longing you can imagine.

  359. It's a longing that God Himself

  360. should want for everybody, right?

  361. It's biblical, the thing that you want,

  362. and God doesn't give it to you.

  363. Right?

  364. You don't get the spouse.

  365. You don't get the child.

  366. You don't get the job.

  367. And then you're left sitting there saying,

  368. well, how could you?

  369. I did everything.

  370. I did all of my part for you,

  371. and you're just silent.

  372. You're not doing anything.

  373. And we begin to get angry at God

  374. and shake our fist at God,

  375. and how dare you?

  376. You know, for years,

  377. I've been living for you,

  378. and all I wanted was this one thing,

  379. and you couldn't do it.

  380. That's how you know

  381. that you've begun to believe

  382. that we can earn.

  383. What must I do, Lord?

  384. So the phrase,

  385. you owe me,

  386. is the exact opposite

  387. of have mercy on me.

  388. In terms of meaning,

  389. it's the polar opposite.

  390. Have mercy says,

  391. I need something from you,

  392. but I don't deserve it.

  393. You owe me,

  394. says,

  395. I demand something from you

  396. because I do deserve it.

  397. Right?

  398. So that's the second sign

  399. that we're in danger.

  400. The third sign

  401. that this man's in danger,

  402. that we might be in danger,

  403. is that he's after

  404. what God can give him

  405. instead of God himself.

  406. He clearly wants eternal life.

  407. My life is going really well

  408. in this life,

  409. and I just, you know,

  410. the one thing

  411. that I haven't quite

  412. taken care of yet

  413. is what's going to happen

  414. in the next life.

  415. So I've got to make sure

  416. that's,

  417. I've got to cover that base.

  418. Okay, teacher,

  419. what do I have to do

  420. to get eternal life?

  421. Now, I think this is really hard

  422. to see in our own hearts.

  423. I think it can be very hard

  424. to know if we want God

  425. because of what he can give us,

  426. or if we want God

  427. for his own sake.

  428. Because, of course,

  429. there are lots of things

  430. that we should rightfully

  431. expect God to give us, right?

  432. I mean, it's right.

  433. A part of being

  434. in a relationship with God

  435. is to want God

  436. to give us the things

  437. that God can give us.

  438. We want God to bless us.

  439. Of course we do.

  440. We want God to soothe our anxiety

  441. and give us peace in the storm.

  442. We want God to guide us

  443. in our decision-making,

  444. major vocational junctures.

  445. We want to know,

  446. God, do you want me

  447. to go this way in my company,

  448. or do you want me

  449. to change and go over here?

  450. Do you want me to live here,

  451. or do you want me to live here?

  452. Do you want me to marry this person,

  453. or do you want me

  454. to marry this person?

  455. We want God to speak

  456. into those things.

  457. We want God to provide for us.

  458. And it's right

  459. to want those things from God.

  460. But it's very easy

  461. for us to begin treating God

  462. like a kind of

  463. divine vending machine.

  464. You know,

  465. you need something,

  466. you come to God,

  467. you pray,

  468. you get it,

  469. thanks God,

  470. and then we kind of

  471. go on our merry way.

  472. And we begin to see God

  473. like a vending machine

  474. rather than a heavenly Father.

  475. As someone who's there

  476. to meet our needs

  477. rather than somebody

  478. who's created us

  479. for a relationship

  480. with himself.

  481. And it's really hard

  482. to know the difference

  483. in your own heart.

  484. Often,

  485. the only time

  486. we really know the difference

  487. is when, again,

  488. we don't get the thing

  489. that we want.

  490. And then we have

  491. that really hard decision

  492. confronting us,

  493. do I still want to be

  494. in relationship with God

  495. if He's not going to give me

  496. this thing that I want?

  497. Would I take God

  498. without the thing?

  499. That's how we begin

  500. to know.

  501. But if we've begun

  502. to kind of do this,

  503. if we've begun to say,

  504. you know,

  505. I want advice from Jesus

  506. but not salvation,

  507. I just want to know

  508. what I have to do

  509. to get blessing

  510. from Jesus,

  511. and really,

  512. I'm more interested

  513. in what I can get

  514. from God

  515. than having an ongoing

  516. relationship with God.

  517. If those are true of us,

  518. then we're in major danger.

  519. And if that's true of you,

  520. then wealth really is going

  521. to be incredibly toxic

  522. for you.

  523. It's going to have

  524. a horrible influence

  525. on your heart

  526. if those things

  527. are true about you.

  528. It's going to be

  529. very dangerous.

  530. It's going to be like

  531. radiation in your home.

  532. You know?

  533. Asbestos,

  534. spiritual asbestos

  535. in your home.

  536. And so you're in danger.

  537. And so then the question becomes,

  538. well, what can we do about this?

  539. What can we do about it?

  540. And of course,

  541. the real question,

  542. the real question is,

  543. what can Jesus do about this?

  544. Because right there,

  545. if we're in danger,

  546. we know that our only hope

  547. is Jesus.

  548. And so in Jesus' response,

  549. we begin to see

  550. an answer to that question.

  551. Jesus responds first

  552. by saying what the man expects.

  553. Jesus says,

  554. well, you know,

  555. you know the commandments.

  556. And he lifts off

  557. five of the commandments.

  558. You know,

  559. and the man is ready

  560. with an answer.

  561. Well, yeah,

  562. I know the commandments.

  563. I've kept these commandments

  564. as long as I can remember

  565. is essentially what he says.

  566. But Jesus is setting him up.

  567. Right?

  568. And then Jesus says

  569. the thing that starts

  570. to get at this man's heart.

  571. He says, okay.

  572. And you can imagine

  573. Jesus sort of saying,

  574. you know the commandments.

  575. And the man says,

  576. oh, yeah, I know them.

  577. I've kept them.

  578. Great.

  579. All right.

  580. And Jesus,

  581. you can imagine Jesus

  582. kind of turned away.

  583. Oh, yeah, yeah.

  584. One more thing.

  585. I want you to sell

  586. all that you have.

  587. I want you to give it

  588. all the way to the poor.

  589. And I want you

  590. to come and follow me.

  591. And that's the heart.

  592. That's the heart.

  593. This man leaves sad,

  594. but he can't do it.

  595. Now, you read that

  596. as a Christian

  597. and you say,

  598. well, what does this mean?

  599. Does this mean

  600. that the only way

  601. to follow Jesus

  602. is to sell everything

  603. that we have,

  604. give it all away?

  605. Maybe.

  606. Maybe.

  607. Maybe.

  608. What I think's going on here

  609. is Jesus is directly challenging

  610. the three issues

  611. that we just looked at.

  612. This man says,

  613. hey, I want your advice,

  614. not your salvation.

  615. In this statement,

  616. Jesus is saying,

  617. you don't just need my advice.

  618. You need me

  619. to become the center of your life.

  620. And in order for me

  621. to become the center of your life,

  622. the thing that is already

  623. at the center of your life

  624. needs to be displaced,

  625. and that's your self-sufficiency.

  626. And you could say,

  627. oh, yeah, yeah,

  628. I'll follow you.

  629. But the only way

  630. to know for sure

  631. whether or not

  632. I'm actually

  633. the center of your life

  634. is for you

  635. to actually get rid

  636. of the thing

  637. that is at the center

  638. of your life.

  639. Take away

  640. your self-sufficiency.

  641. Put yourself

  642. in a position

  643. where you have no idea

  644. what you're going

  645. to eat tomorrow.

  646. And then you'll know

  647. whether or not

  648. I'm at the center

  649. of your life.

  650. That's what you need.

  651. I need to become the center.

  652. This man says to Jesus,

  653. what do I have to do

  654. to earn God's blessing?

  655. And in Jesus' response,

  656. Jesus is essentially

  657. saying to this man,

  658. there's no possible way

  659. you can earn

  660. anything from God.

  661. You know,

  662. by calling this man

  663. to get rid of his wealth,

  664. he's exposing the sin

  665. in this man's heart.

  666. Notice, by the way,

  667. that when this man

  668. asks,

  669. what must I do,

  670. Jesus says,

  671. well, you know the commandments,

  672. and he doesn't list off

  673. all the commandments.

  674. He only lists

  675. five of the commandments,

  676. the what we would call

  677. the kind of social commandments,

  678. the commands that have to do

  679. with our relationships

  680. with other people.

  681. Notice he did not mention

  682. the first commandment.

  683. What's the first commandment?

  684. Have no other gods

  685. but me, right?

  686. And as it's been famously said

  687. by Luther and others,

  688. Martin Luther and others,

  689. all sin

  690. and all breaking

  691. of commandments

  692. is essentially

  693. a breaking

  694. of the first commandment.

  695. Right?

  696. So this man says,

  697. I've kept all the commandments.

  698. He says,

  699. well,

  700. except the first one.

  701. Have no other gods

  702. before me.

  703. This man thinks

  704. he's lived a good life

  705. and probably has,

  706. but he worships

  707. a different God.

  708. His God is his wealth.

  709. His God is himself.

  710. And then the third thing

  711. that Jesus is doing

  712. is he's saying,

  713. you don't just need

  714. what God can give you.

  715. You actually need God himself.

  716. And again,

  717. this is why he says

  718. to this man,

  719. sell all that you have,

  720. give to the poor,

  721. and come and follow me.

  722. It's very easy to say

  723. that you love God

  724. and that you're in it

  725. for a relationship with God

  726. when you're surrounded

  727. with abundance.

  728. But as I said earlier,

  729. what happens

  730. if you lose all of that?

  731. What happens

  732. if you don't get

  733. the thing that you want?

  734. What happens

  735. if there's another

  736. major stock market crash

  737. and you lose your job?

  738. What happens

  739. if, God forbid,

  740. you actually decided

  741. to sell all that you have

  742. and give it away?

  743. What happens then

  744. to your relationship

  745. with God

  746. when you have to wonder

  747. whether or not

  748. you're going to eat again?

  749. Do you still want God

  750. in your life then?

  751. or not?

  752. So, in a nutshell,

  753. Jesus is inviting this man

  754. to leave behind

  755. a life of self-sufficiency

  756. and to put himself

  757. in the position

  758. of total dependence

  759. on Jesus

  760. to provide for him.

  761. He's inviting him

  762. to receive the kingdom

  763. like a child would.

  764. He's inviting him

  765. to cry out in the temple,

  766. Lord, have mercy on me,

  767. a sinner.

  768. And he's saying,

  769. I need to become

  770. the sinner of your life.

  771. With me,

  772. it's an all-or-none deal.

  773. And, of course,

  774. this man refuses

  775. because he says,

  776. or it says in the text,

  777. he's extremely rich.

  778. And so, he refuses.

  779. And that's the Bible's

  780. way of saying,

  781. that's Luke's way of saying,

  782. this is too great

  783. a sacrifice

  784. and the man can't

  785. bring him to do it.

  786. The sacrifice

  787. is too great, Jesus.

  788. I'll give it some away

  789. but I can't give it all away.

  790. It's too much.

  791. It's too much to ask.

  792. The sacrifice

  793. is too great.

  794. And here's the hard truth

  795. that we need to confront.

  796. Every single person

  797. in this room

  798. would do the same thing.

  799. As much as I would like to say

  800. that I would respond

  801. differently to Jesus,

  802. not true.

  803. If none of you were around

  804. and it was just me and Jesus

  805. and there was nobody else to see,

  806. I would probably say,

  807. thanks but no thanks.

  808. I prefer things

  809. the way they are.

  810. Where you're an accessory,

  811. you know,

  812. you're an app

  813. on the operating system,

  814. you're an advisor.

  815. And this is why people say

  816. in this passage,

  817. then who can be saved?

  818. What?

  819. What?

  820. What?

  821. So Jesus says,

  822. what's impossible with man

  823. is possible with God.

  824. Now what's he talking about?

  825. Well, he's talking about the gospel.

  826. He's talking about the gospel.

  827. You know,

  828. there's two rich young rulers

  829. in this passage.

  830. There's the rich young ruler

  831. that we've been talking about

  832. and then there's Jesus himself.

  833. Jesus is a rich young ruler.

  834. Jesus has all the wealth

  835. because everything in heaven and earth

  836. actually belongs to him.

  837. All of this man's wealth

  838. actually belongs to him.

  839. Jesus is at this point

  840. fairly young

  841. in his earthly ministry.

  842. And talk about rulers.

  843. Jesus is the king

  844. of the heavens and the earth.

  845. All authority

  846. belongs to him.

  847. He's the ultimate

  848. rich young ruler.

  849. And yet we have

  850. this amazing contrast

  851. where this man

  852. refuses to sacrifice

  853. this little bit of wealth

  854. that he thinks is his

  855. for the sake of Jesus.

  856. He says,

  857. that's too great a sacrifice.

  858. He goes away sad.

  859. He can't do it.

  860. But the gospel says

  861. that Jesus was actually

  862. willing to sacrifice

  863. all of his wealth

  864. and all of his power

  865. and all of his status

  866. and all of his dignity

  867. and even his own life

  868. for us.

  869. The gospel says

  870. that when we look at Jesus

  871. we say,

  872. it's too great a sacrifice.

  873. I can't do it.

  874. But when Jesus looks at you

  875. he says,

  876. that sacrifice

  877. is worth it

  878. a thousand times over.

  879. I would do it again tomorrow.

  880. You're worth it.

  881. My Father in heaven

  882. is worth it.

  883. Right?

  884. And so we see

  885. Paul says in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  886. chapter 8 verse 9,

  887. For you know the grace

  888. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  889. that though he was rich

  890. yet for your sake

  891. he became poor

  892. so that you by his poverty

  893. might become rich.

  894. that's the gospel

  895. that this rich young ruler

  896. needs to hear.

  897. And this kind of change

  898. that is needed in us

  899. can only happen

  900. when the truth of those words

  901. hit home in our hearts

  902. and we begin to realize

  903. that sacrifice

  904. the willingness to give

  905. everything away

  906. has already happened

  907. on our behalf.

  908. Whatever we have

  909. at the center of our lives

  910. whatever you currently have

  911. as the center of your life

  912. as your operating system

  913. as the sun

  914. in your solar system

  915. I guarantee you

  916. it does not love you like that.

  917. I guarantee you

  918. it will not sacrifice

  919. for you like that.

  920. And this is why

  921. Jesus is the only one

  922. worthy

  923. of being at the center

  924. of our lives.

  925. So the question

  926. that I hope

  927. we can sort of

  928. think about

  929. as we move on

  930. in the service

  931. is what does sit

  932. at the center

  933. of your life?

  934. And how do you know?

  935. You know

  936. is God at the center

  937. or is God

  938. an accessory add-on?

  939. Is Jesus Lord and Savior

  940. or is Jesus

  941. an advisor and teacher?

  942. You know

  943. is God an app

  944. or is He

  945. the operating system itself?

  946. Is God the sun

  947. in your solar system

  948. or is God

  949. orbiting around

  950. something else?

  951. You know

  952. one of the only ways

  953. to know

  954. how central

  955. wealth has become

  956. is when we have

  957. an opportunity

  958. to give some of it away.

  959. So that's why

  960. we talk about

  961. something like

  962. the home campaign

  963. as a major

  964. spiritual opportunity.

  965. As my wife

  966. Laura and I

  967. as we have talked

  968. about this

  969. we have sort of

  970. hit that place

  971. where we're having

  972. to figure out

  973. what role

  974. does this play

  975. in us

  976. and what difference

  977. is it going to have

  978. on our life

  979. by giving it?

  980. And that's the place

  981. where you began

  982. to see how central

  983. something has become

  984. for you.

  985. So it doesn't matter

  986. to me

  987. as much

  988. how much

  989. we raise.

  990. The thing that matters

  991. most is that

  992. everybody is able

  993. to be a part of this

  994. and that everybody

  995. has the opportunity

  996. to give sacrificially

  997. at a level

  998. that makes us

  999. question

  1000. and clarifies

  1001. what is really

  1002. sitting at the center

  1003. of me.

  1004. Because in the gospel

  1005. we have this opportunity

  1006. to recenter our lives

  1007. away from our own

  1008. self-sufficiency

  1009. and on to Jesus.

  1010. Let's pray.

  1011. Lord we thank you

  1012. for your word

  1013. and we thank you

  1014. for the encounter

  1015. with this man

  1016. and I confess

  1017. that I see

  1018. so much of myself

  1019. in this man.

  1020. and Lord

  1021. we see here

  1022. why we need you

  1023. so much.

1024. We see what we need

  1025. from you Lord

1026. which is not just input

  1027. but we need

  1028. a Copernican revolution.

  1029. We need you

  1030. to displace

  1031. dislodge

  1032. forcibly remove

  1033. with a crowbar

  1034. the things that sit

  1035. at the very center

  1036. of us

  1037. and to become

  1038. the center

1039. to sit on the throne

  1040. to realign

  1041. our orbit.

  1042. Lord we pray

  1043. that we would be

  1044. the kind of community

  1045. moving forward

  1046. that is centered

  1047. on you

  1048. and that that would

  1049. be a blessing

  1050. not just to us

  1051. but that that would

  1052. enable us to be

  1053. the kind of blessing

1054. that we want to be

  1055. to those around us

  1056. in this city.

  1057. Lord that that would

  1058. spill out into love

  1059. and spill out

  1060. into reconciliation

  1061. and spill out

  1062. into justice

  1063. and spill out

  1064. into evangelism

  1065. and spill out

  1066. into healing

  1067. and spill out

1068. into all of the things

  1069. that we hope

  1070. will happen

  1071. as we call

  1072. the city

  1073. our home

  1074. that you would

  1075. make your home

  1076. in us.

  1077. We pray this

  1078. in your son's

  1079. holy name.

  1080. Amen.

  1081. Amen.
