  1. Well, good morning again.

  2. My name is Jeff.

  3. I am one of the pastors here at Church of the Advent.

  4. And if you're here this morning and it's your first time, I just want to say welcome.

  5. We're so glad that you decided to join us.

  6. We would love to connect with you.

  7. During the announcements, there's going to be a QR code on the screen for you to scan.

  8. It's also in the lobby on your way out.

  9. We'd love for you to scan that, fill out a form, and connect with you.

  10. And one of our pastors will follow up with you.

  11. And we would love to just get coffee and hear your story and hear about what God is doing in your life.

  12. If you would have walked the streets of Corinth in the first century, you would have noticed a number of things about this city.

  13. You would have noticed that it was a very wealthy city.

  14. That it was a center of commerce and trade, of banking and finance.

  15. You would have noticed that it was a center of a lot of travelers and tourism.

  16. Tourists who came to the city for the city's many festivals and athletic games, athletic events.

  17. You would have noticed that it was a city full of vice and crime.

  18. One of the things that Corinth was famous for was its flourishing industry of prostitution.

  19. All of this led one scholar to conclude that Corinth was at once the New York, the Los Angeles, and the Las Vegas of the ancient world combined.

  20. Another thing that you would have noticed about the city of Corinth, in addition to all this, is that it was a very religious city.

  21. There were 26 shrines and temples scattered throughout the city to various gods and goddesses.

  22. The most prominent of which stood atop the city's highest point on a large hill.

  23. And it was the temple of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty and fertility.

  24. And it's to people in this city that Paul writes this letter.

  25. And in this section, he's writing to people who are living in a city of temples.

  26. And to people living in a city of temples, he tells them, you're to be the one temple.

  27. You're to be the one temple that stands apart all the rest.

  28. We've been in a series in 2 Corinthians called Power and Weakness.

  29. And we've been walking through that letter chapter by chapter.

  30. And if you're just reading 2 Corinthians straight through, if you're reading it straight through all in one go,

  31. when you get to this section in 2 Corinthians 6, it can feel like this abrupt left turn.

  32. In Paul's thought and in the flow of his words.

  33. We're in this section, as we had two weeks ago, where Paul is making this direct appeal to the Corinthian church.

  34. Some people that he's had some conflict with in the past.

  35. And he's seeking to ask them to accept his authority as an apostle.

  36. And for them to receive the authenticity of his ministry.

  37. But he's also asking them to open their hearts to him again in love.

  38. He's seeking to restore his relationship with them.

  39. And right in the middle of the section, he sort of makes this what feels like an abrupt left turn.

  40. He goes right into this really strong exhortation about pursuing holiness.

  41. About pursuing holiness.

  42. And you're like, okay, Paul, like, I thought I knew where this was going.

  43. But I didn't realize that this is where we were headed.

  44. But we're here now.

  45. So, okay.

  46. But I didn't realize that this was where we were going.

  47. And what may feel like an abrupt transition in the flow of this letter actually shows us something really important.

  48. It shows us that Paul's main concern, although he cares about his relationship with the Corinthians,

  49. his main concern isn't about hurt feelings.

  50. His main concern is about seeing the gospel transform the Corinthian church.

  51. And as the gospel transformed the Corinthian church, that it would transform the city in which they live.

  52. Paul calls on people living in a city of temples to be the temple of the living God.

  53. Because that is what they are.

  54. And so we're going to look at two things this morning that Paul reminds us of.

  55. We're going to see that we're called to live the story of the temple.

  56. And we're called to draw sacred boundaries.

  57. We're called to live the story of the temple.

  58. And we're called to draw sacred boundaries.

  59. Let's pray together.

  60. Lord, thank you for your word.

  61. Thank you that all of it is true.

  62. It is given to us in love.

  63. I pray that you would speak to us by your Holy Spirit through your word.

  64. That we may know, love, follow, and worship you.

  65. In Christ's name, amen.

  66. So first, Paul shows us that we're to live the story of the temple.

  67. The central image of the temple comes from verse 16, where Paul says,

  68. for we are the temple of the living God.

  69. And in many ways, the story of the Bible is the story of the temple.

  70. That place where God reveals his glory and manifests his presence with his people.

  71. Genesis 1 and 2 shows us that all of creation is God's temple.

  72. His presence and glory fills the cosmos.

  73. And the Garden of Eden is sort of this microcosm of creation, where human beings made in his image embody his presence and his rule to the rest of creation as kings and as priests.

  74. And humanity's job description is not only to serve God and worship God in this garden temple, but to extend its borders.

  75. To extend its borders by cultivating God's creation until the earth is filled with the glory of God.

  76. Old Testament scholar T. Desmond Alexander says this.

  77. He says,

  78. And so what did they do?

  79. How did they respond to this boundary?

  80. Well, when I was in seminary, I had an Old Testament professor who would talk about Genesis 3.

  81. And he would say that the way that Genesis 3 should read is that a serpent came into the garden.

  82. A serpent came into the garden and split.

  83. Adam killed the serpent.

  84. That's how Genesis 3 should read.

  85. That Adam protects the garden from the presence of evil.

  86. But that's not what Genesis 3 says.

  87. Instead, Adam and Eve listen to the serpent.

  88. And they rebel against the sacred boundary that God had set.

  89. And so God expels them from the garden.

  90. He expels them from his prisons.

  91. And he strips them of their status as kings and priests.

  92. And the story of the Old Testament is a story of God coming to restore his glory and his presence to his fallen creation.

  93. That glory and that presence that was lost in Eden.

  94. And the echoes of Eden run throughout the Old Testament story.

  95. We see the echoes of Eden all throughout the Old Testament.

  96. In particular, we see these striking similarities between Eden and these places where God came to dwell with his people.

  97. The tabernacle and the temple.

  98. So in Genesis, we see that the Lord himself walks with Adam and Eve in the garden.

  99. But Leviticus and Deuteronomy say the exact same thing about the tabernacle and the temple.

  100. That the Lord comes and dwells and walks with his people.

  101. We know that Genesis 3 says that Eden was...

  102. The entrance to the east of Eden was guarded by angels, by cherubim.

  103. The tabernacle and the temple are entered from the east.

  104. And the altar is guarded by angels, by cherubim.

  105. The lampstand, the menorah in the tabernacle is designed to look like what?

  106. Like a tree.

  107. Symbolizing the tree of life.

  108. And so the tabernacle and the temple, the place of God's dwelling, are meant to point us back to the Garden of Eden.

  109. They're meant to point us back to Genesis.

  110. And the message that we're supposed to get is supposed to be loud and clear.

  111. It's supposed to be loud and clear that the redemption and the salvation that God brings is always about the restoration of his purposes in creation.

  112. That's what we're supposed to see throughout the Old Testament story.

  113. And here in 2 Corinthians chapter 6, Paul is following the grain of the story.

    2 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  114. He's following the grain of the story of the temple.

  115. In three verses, he quotes and alludes to six or seven different Old Testament passages that are all about God's covenant relationship with his people through his temple.

  116. In verse 16, he quotes Leviticus 26, which says,

  117. I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.

  118. God dwelling among his people.

  119. God walking among his people.

  120. Those are echoes of Genesis.

  121. They're echoes of Eden.

  122. In verse 17, he quotes Isaiah 52, which says,

  123. Therefore, go out from their midst and be separate from them and touch no unclean thing, and then I will welcome you.

  124. And here God is speaking through Isaiah to people who are living in exile in Babylon,

  125. and he's saying to them,

  126. Even though you live in exile, you're still people of the temple.

  127. And so don't worship the idols around you.

  128. Don't worship the gods around you,

  129. because one day I'm going to bring you out of exile,

  130. and I'm going to once again make you my dwelling place.

  131. Again, we should hear Genesis,

  132. Eden,

  133. temple,

  134. these echoes.

  135. And then in verse 18,

  136. Paul does this thing where he actually brings together two different passages.

  137. He brings together 2 Samuel 7 and Deuteronomy 32.

  138. And he brings them together in this quotation that says,

  139. I will be a father to you,

  140. and you shall be sons and daughters to me.

  141. And what this is,

  142. is again,

  143. it's a reference of God dwelling among his covenant people in intimate relationship.

  144. God is a father who dwells with his people as a father dwells with his sons and daughters.

  145. And all of these references here in 2 Corinthians 6 were meant to hear the story of the temple

  146. that goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden in Genesis.

  147. And Paul is saying that this story has reached its climax in you, the church.

  148. In Jesus Christ, we don't just have a temple.

  149. We are the temple of the living God.

  150. Jesus is our great high priest and our atoning sacrifice.

  151. He entered the temple of the Holy of Holies and tore the curtain

  152. so that the presence of God, the glory of God,

  153. might be poured out by the Holy Spirit to all people.

  154. The temple of God is no longer brick and mortar,

  155. but it is flesh and blood.

  156. It is you.

  157. It is your very bodies have become the temple of the living God.

  158. And so we see this story unfold from garden to tabernacle to temple to exile to Jesus to the church

  159. of God filling all creation with his glory

  160. and then in love coming to save and redeem and dwell with people who had rejected that glory

  161. and to restore them once again to their vocation as royal priests.

  162. And it is this glorious truth.

  163. It is this new covenant reality about the temple that motivates us to be holy people,

  164. that motivates us to pursue holiness in our lives.

  165. Holiness is its moral purity.

  166. It's godly maturity.

  167. Holiness is looking like God.

  168. It's looking like Jesus.

  169. That's what holiness is.

  170. And in chapter 7, verse 1, Paul says,

  171. Since we have these promises, beloved,

  172. since we are inheritors of this story,

  173. let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit,

  174. bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

  175. He's saying if we are in fact God's temple,

  176. if we've been receivers and inheritors of these promises in this story,

  177. then we should take holiness in our lives seriously.

  178. If Old Testament believers had to be cleansed from sin in order to enter God's holy temple,

  179. how much more should we pursue holiness in our lives now that we have become that temple in our bodies?

  180. And it's important to see, though, that as we talk about pursuing holiness,

  181. as Paul exhorts and commands the Corinthians here to pursue holiness in our lives,

  182. it's important to see that in this verse,

  183. Paul is rooting our pursuit of holiness.

  184. He's rooting it in God's grace.

  185. He's rooting it in God's grace.

  186. He says,

  187. Since we have these promises, beloved,

  188. since we have these promises,

  189. he's talking about the assurance of all the promises that we have through faith in Christ.

  190. And this says something really important

  191. that I think we can sometimes miss

  192. about the pursuit of holiness in our life.

  193. And it's this,

  194. that the pursuit of holiness

  195. isn't about becoming somebody that we're not yet.

  196. It's not about becoming somebody that we're not yet.

  197. It's about becoming more and more of who we already are in Christ

  198. as recipients of the gospel.

  199. Pursuing holiness isn't about becoming more and more of something,

  200. someone that we're not yet.

  201. It's about becoming more and more of who we already are in Christ

  202. by grace through faith.

  203. And so this story of garden to temple,

  204. to tabernacle to temple,

  205. to Jesus,

  206. frames and shows us

  207. what Paul means when he says in verse 16

  208. that in a city of temples,

  209. we're to be the temple of the living God.

  210. And it shows us why we should pursue holiness.

  211. And it shows us

  212. the particular way

  213. that God,

  214. that Paul is,

  215. God through Paul,

  216. is calling the Corinthians

  217. to pursue holiness in their lives.

  218. It shows us why,

  219. it shows us one particular way

  220. that we're actually meant to pursue holiness

  221. in our lives.

  222. And that is

  223. that we're to draw sacred boundaries.

  224. That we're to draw sacred boundaries

  225. in our lives.

  226. The central command here

  227. in this section

  228. is kind of a strange one,

  229. to be honest.

  230. In verse 14,

  231. Paul says,

  232. do not be unequally yoked

  233. with unbelievers.

  234. Now, what in the world does that mean?

  235. Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

  236. Well, a yoke

  237. is a large piece of wood

  238. that farmers would harness

  239. to the backs

  240. of two animals

  241. who would drag a plow

  242. through a field together

  243. as they were plowing the field

  244. for planting.

  245. And this yoke,

  246. this large beam of wood

  247. harnessed to these two animals

  248. would allow the animals

  249. to work together productively.

  250. It would allow them to

  251. pull the plow together

  252. in the same direction.

  253. And in Deuteronomy 2,

  254. there are some laws

  255. about the agricultural life of Israel.

  256. And there was a law that said

  257. that you can't make an ox

  258. and a donkey plow together.

  259. You can yoke together two oxen.

  260. You can yoke together two donkeys.

  261. But don't yoke together

  262. an ox and a donkey.

  263. Why is that?

  264. Well, because an ox

  265. and a donkey

  266. are fundamentally,

  267. they're fundamentally

  268. incompatible plowing partners.

  269. They're fundamentally incompatible.

  270. An ox is clearly bigger

  271. and stronger than a donkey.

  272. And so they won't

  273. share the load equally.

  274. And so if you harness them together,

  275. it's going to be hard for them

  276. to move in the same direction.

  277. It's going to be hard for them

  278. to move the plow.

  279. And if you harness them together,

  280. you also risk doing damage to the animals.

  281. You risk hurting the animals.

  282. The ox is going to be exhausted

  283. from having to do all the work.

  284. And the donkey is going to run the risk

  285. of breaking a leg

  286. while he tries to keep up.

  287. And if that happens,

  288. and your animals are hurt and exhausted,

  289. then you can forget about plowing your field.

  290. You can forget about planting your crops.

  291. Instead, you need two animals

  292. of the same kind

  293. who can be yoked equally

  294. and move the plow in the same direction

  295. and share the load together.

  296. And most likely,

  297. Paul is using this image,

  298. he's using this metaphor

  299. to talk about

  300. worship and fellowship

  301. in the Corinthian temples.

  302. And the 26 temples scattered around the city.

  303. And he's warning them

  304. against participating in idol worship,

  305. participating in pagan practices

  306. like the temple feasts

  307. and things like prostitution.

  308. He's warning them against

  309. harnessing themselves

  310. to all the various cults and religions

  311. around the city.

  312. And we see this

  313. because of what follows

  314. in verses 14 through 16.

  315. In verses 14 through 16,

  316. he asks several rhetorical questions

  317. in a row.

  318. And these five questions

  319. are all making the same point.

  320. He says,

  321. for what partnership

  322. has righteousness

  323. with lawlessness?

  324. What fellowship

  325. has light

  326. with darkness?

  327. What accord

  328. has Christ

  329. with Belial?

  330. Belial is this name

  331. for Satan,

  332. meaning worthless one?

  333. What portion

  334. does a believer share

  335. with an unbeliever?

  336. What agreement

  337. has the temple of God

  338. with idols?

  339. And so,

  340. why does Paul ask

  341. this string of questions?

  342. He asks them

  343. to make one singular point,

  344. which is,

  345. all of these

  346. are pointing to

  347. a fundamental

  348. spiritual incompatibility

  349. between having communion

  350. with Jesus

  351. and having communion

  352. with idols.

  353. And so,

  354. to be unequally yoked

  355. is to be fundamentally

  356. aligned

  357. with somebody

  358. or something

  359. that is your

  360. spiritual opposite.

  361. To be unequally yoked

  362. is to be fundamentally

  363. aligned at your core

  364. with somebody

  365. or something

  366. that's your spiritual

  367. opposite.

  368. There's something

  369. at the center

  370. of all of our lives

  371. that is driving

  372. the plow

  373. of our decisions,

  374. of our choices,

  375. our habits,

  376. our values.

  377. It could be money.

  378. It could be success.

  379. It could be comfort.

  380. It could be

  381. even a good thing

  382. like family.

  383. But whatever it is,

  384. that is what you're

  385. harnessing

  386. yourself to.

  387. It's what you're

  388. harnessing

  389. the deepest places

  390. of your soul to.

  391. That is what you worship.

  392. And Paul says,

  393. don't be

  394. harnessed together

  395. with people

  396. and things

  397. that are

  398. your spiritual

  399. opposite.

  400. Don't align yourself

  401. with what is going

  402. to do real damage

  403. to your soul

  404. and pull you away,

  405. pull your heart away

  406. from following Jesus.

  407. Now,

  408. here's what this

  409. doesn't mean.

  410. It's important

  411. to see here's

  412. what this doesn't mean.

  413. This is not about

  414. not having any

  415. relationships

  416. or associations

  417. with people

  418. who aren't Christians.

  419. Of course,

  420. it doesn't mean this.

  421. We know this

  422. from the rest

  423. of Paul's writings.

  424. In other places,

  425. he assumes

  426. that people have

  427. relationships

  428. with non-Christians.

  429. And he always

  430. encourages love

  431. and friendship

  432. and hospitality

  433. in those relationships.

  434. We also know this

  435. just because of what

  436. the rest of the Bible

  437. teaches.

  438. All throughout Scripture,

  439. we see that we're called

  440. to love our neighbors.

  441. We're called

  442. to be salt and light.

  443. We're called

  444. to love all people.

  445. And that implies

  446. relationship and friendship.

  447. I mean,

  448. if you look at the life

  449. of Jesus,

  450. I mean,

  451. Jesus had more

  452. non-Christian friends

  453. than anybody.

  454. He was known

  455. for hanging out

  456. with people

  457. who weren't believers.

  458. And so,

  459. what this command

  460. is about then,

  461. what it is about

  462. is creating

  463. sacred boundaries

  464. in your life

  465. with people

  466. and things

  467. that are your

  468. spiritual opposites.

  469. Creating sacred

  470. boundaries in your life

  471. with people

  472. and things

  473. that are your

  474. spiritual opposites.

  475. So,

  476. we're to love

  477. our neighbors.

  478. We're to love

  479. our friends.

  480. You're to share

  481. your lives with them.

  482. You're to share

  483. your worldly goods

  484. with them.

  485. You're to invite

  486. them to your dinner table.

  487. You're to have

  488. friendships

  489. with all kinds

  490. of people.

  491. You're to share

  492. everything

  493. that you have

  494. with them.

  495. But don't worship

  496. their idols.

  497. Don't worship

  498. their gods.

  499. Don't be harnessed

  500. into situations

  501. where you're being

  502. dragged away

  503. into sin,

  504. where you're being

  505. pulled away

  506. from following Jesus.

  507. Instead,

  508. we're to create

  509. sacred boundaries.

  510. You might say,

  511. okay,

  512. well,

  513. what are some

  514. examples of this?

  515. What are some

  516. examples of what

  517. this looks like

  518. practically?

  519. I'm going to give

  520. you three.

  521. A lot of people,

  522. actually,

  523. when they read

  524. this verse,

  525. and you might have

  526. been thinking this

  527. when we read

  528. the passage earlier,

  529. a lot of people

  530. think that this verse

  531. is primarily

  532. talking about marriage.

  533. That's most often

  534. how people quote

  535. this passage.

  536. But hopefully,

  537. by seeing the context,

  538. hopefully,

  539. what you're able

  540. to see is that

  541. marriage is actually

  542. not what this verse

  543. is primarily about.

  544. It's actually much

  545. broader than that.

  546. Again,

  547. it's about anything

  548. in your life

  549. that you're aligning

  550. yourself with

  551. that is your

  552. spiritual opposite.

  553. Having said that,

  554. marriage is one

  555. particular potential

  556. application of this

  557. verse.

  558. Because marriage,

  559. let's be honest,

  560. marriage is one of

  561. the bigger harnesses

  562. that you can get

  563. into in life,

  564. where you're

  565. hitching yourself

  566. to somebody else.

  567. And you don't want

  568. to marry someone

  569. who's your

  570. spiritual opposite.

  571. You want to marry

  572. someone who's

  573. your spiritual partner,

  574. someone who can

  575. encourage you

  576. to follow Jesus,

  577. someone who can

  578. pray with you

  579. and for you,

  580. someone who knows

  581. how to speak

  582. gospel truth

  583. to the intricacies

  584. of your personality.

  585. At the same time,

  586. we know that,

  587. we know from Paul

  588. in 1 Corinthians

  589. that if you do

  590. in fact find yourself

  591. in a marriage

  592. with an unbeliever,

  593. we're actually

  594. encouraged to

  595. nevertheless stay

  596. in that marriage.

  597. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  598. chapter 7,

  599. Paul talks about

  600. how someone can

  601. continue to be

  602. a spiritual influence

  603. on their spouse

  604. and potentially even

  605. lead them to faith

  606. in Christ.

  607. But still,

  608. the ideal is to

  609. marry someone

  610. that you're

  611. spiritual equals with,

  612. that you're

  613. spiritually compatible

  614. with.

  615. A more common

  616. example for all

  617. of us might be

  618. something like

  619. in the workplace,

  620. perhaps a political

  621. or a business

  622. relationship.

  623. Maybe at work,

  624. you could be asked

  625. to enter into

  626. a contract

  627. or an agreement,

  628. a business dealing,

  629. a financial agreement

  630. that would clearly

  631. compromise your identity

  632. in Christ,

  633. that would clearly

  634. compromise your ethics

  635. and your values

  636. as a Christian.

  637. And so,

  638. in those kinds

  639. of situations,

  640. you may need to

  641. draw a sacred

  642. boundary and say,

  643. this is antithetical

  644. to my identity

  645. in Christ.

  646. Let's say,

  647. hypothetically,

  648. you were an employee

  649. of the Washington

  650. football team,

  651. the Washington

  652. commanders,

  653. and hypothetically,

  654. the owner of that team

  655. asked you to create

  656. two sets of financial

  657. books.

  658. One that it reported

  659. to the NFL

  660. and one that was

  661. actually true

  662. in order to commit

  663. financial fraud

  664. and pay executives

  665. millions of dollars.

  666. This is just a

  667. hypothetical example.

  668. But this would be

  669. a good opportunity

  670. for a sacred

  671. boundary.

  672. This would be

  673. a situation

  674. in which you

  675. should probably

  676. unhitch yourself

  677. from.

  678. another example

  679. more common

  680. to us would be

  681. certain friendships

  682. that we have.

  683. Maybe there are

  684. some friendships

  685. where you have

  686. to draw some

  687. spiritual boundaries

  688. because maybe

  689. that friendship,

  690. that relationship

  691. is pulling you,

  692. dragging you

  693. away from following

  694. Jesus and into sin.

  695. And again,

  696. I want to be clear,

  697. all of us in this room

  698. should have relationships

  699. and friendships

  700. with people

  701. who don't know Jesus.

  702. but our deepest

  703. spiritual fellowship,

  704. our deepest

  705. spiritual communion

  706. should be people

  707. who are going

  708. in the same direction

  709. as us.

  710. People who are

  711. plowing the field

  712. of discipleship

  713. and who can carry

  714. the load with us

  715. and who can encourage

  716. us as our spiritual

  717. partners to follow

  718. Jesus.

  719. Those are the people

  720. that we should be

  721. in closest

  722. spiritual fellowship

  723. with.

  724. Now,

  725. I fully admit

  726. that most situations

  727. in which creating

  728. these type of

  729. boundaries would apply

  730. are probably

  731. way too complex

  732. for a sermon.

  733. I mean,

  734. there's probably

  735. some really

  736. complicated,

  737. difficult situations

  738. in which this

  739. should rise.

  740. And so,

  741. I think

  742. it's important

  743. to say that

  744. these types of things,

  745. these types of

  746. boundaries are best

  747. to serve not

  748. individually and privately

  749. but in community

  750. with a wise

  751. counsel of brothers

  752. and sisters in Christ

  753. who can speak

  754. into that situation.

  755. But also,

  756. you know,

  757. if you're here

  758. this morning

  759. and you're maybe

  760. wrestling with a

  761. situation or your

  762. relationship and

  763. you're wondering,

  764. am I unequally

  765. yoked in this

  766. situation?

  767. Here's a list

  768. of maybe some

  769. diagnostic questions

  770. that could help

  771. you discern

  772. if you are.

  773. So,

  774. here's a list

  775. of some

  776. diagnostic questions.

  777. Is this

  778. situation,

  779. is this

  780. relationship

  781. drawing me

  782. to idolatry?

  783. Drawing me

  784. to worship

  785. something other

  786. than God?

  787. Am I being

  788. pulled

  789. to center

  790. my life

  791. on something

  792. other than

  793. Jesus?

  794. Am I being

  795. led

  796. to delight

  797. in

  798. what grieves

  799. the heart

  800. of God?

  801. Am I being

  802. influenced

  803. to sin?

  804. Are my

  805. choices

  806. or my

  807. actions

  808. or my

  809. habits

  810. drifting

  811. away

  812. from

  813. my

  814. pursuit

  815. of

  816. holiness?

  817. Is this

  818. situation,

  819. is this

  820. relation

  821. causing

  822. my

  823. affections,

  824. my desire

  825. for Jesus

  826. to wane?

  827. And if you

  828. can answer

  829. yes to

  830. two or three

  831. of those

  832. questions,

  833. it could be

  834. that you

  835. may need

  836. to create

  837. a sacred

  838. boundary

  839. in your

  840. life.

  841. And to

  842. sum all

  843. this up,

  844. Paul is

  845. telling the

  846. Corinthians,

  847. he's saying

  848. in the

  849. city of

  850. temples,

  851. we are

  852. to be

  853. the temple

  854. that is

  855. set apart

  856. and unique,

  857. we're to be

  858. the temple

  859. of the

  860. living God

  861. and this

  862. is something

  863. that motivates

  864. us to

  865. pursue

  866. holy lives.

  867. A

  868. pursuit

  869. that is

  870. rooted in

  871. God's

  872. grace,

  873. that's rooted

  874. in the

  875. gospel,

  876. that's rooted

  877. in who

  878. we are

  879. in Christ,

  880. but nonetheless

  881. a pursuit

  882. that calls

  883. us to

  884. draw sacred

  885. boundaries

  886. in our

  887. lives.

  888. Now that

  889. might seem

  890. like a

  891. tall order

  892. and that's

  893. because it

  894. is.

  895. The pursuit

  896. of holiness

  897. is a

  898. tall order

  899. and that's

  900. why to

  901. pursue holiness

  902. in this

  903. way,

  904. to create

  905. these kinds

  906. of boundaries,

  907. you need

  908. something

  909. better,

  910. you need

  911. something

  912. stronger,

  913. you need

  914. something

  915. more

  916. beautiful

  917. and compelling

  918. in your

  919. life to

  920. be yoked

  921. to if

  922. you're

  923. going to

  924. unhitch

  925. yourself

  926. from something

  927. else.

  928. You know,

  929. one of the

  930. passages that

  931. Paul quotes

  932. here is

  933. from Leviticus

    Leviticus 26 chapter mention

  934. chapter 26

  935. and he

  936. quotes

  937. verses 11

  938. to 12.

  939. Interestingly,

  940. verse 13,

  941. the very next

  942. verse says,

  943. I am the

  944. Lord your

  945. God who

  946. brought you

  947. out of the

  948. land of

  949. Egypt that

  950. you should

  951. not be

  952. their slaves

  953. and I

  954. have broken

  955. the bars

  956. of your

  957. yoke that

  958. you should

  959. walk upright.

  960. The Lord

  961. rescued Israel

  962. from Egypt

  963. from the

  964. yoke of

  965. slavery and

  966. this would

  967. be a

  968. small picture

  969. of what

  970. Jesus Christ

  971. would come

  972. and do

  973. for us

  974. to break

  975. us from

  976. the yoke

  977. of sin

  978. and death.

  979. If comfort

  980. and security

  981. and wealth

  982. are driving

  983. the plow

  984. of your

  985. life,

  986. it's inevitably

  987. going to crush

  988. you.

  989. It's inevitably

  990. going to enslave

  991. you because

  992. idols,

  993. see idols

  994. can only

  995. promise

  996. but they

  997. can't deliver.

  998. Money and

  999. success and

  1000. wealth are,

  1001. if that's what

  1002. you're harnessing

  1003. the center of

  1004. your life to,

  1005. if it's what's

  1006. driving the

  1007. plow,

  1008. it's going

  1009. to lead

  1010. you to

  1011. exhaustion

  1012. and it's

  1013. going to lead

  1014. you to real

  1015. spiritual damage

  1016. in your soul.

  1017. But to

  1018. people who

  1019. are weary,

  1020. to people who

  1021. are burdened,

  1022. to people who

  1023. are exhausted,

  1024. from harnessing

  1025. themselves to

  1026. idols,

  1027. from harnessing

  1028. themselves to

  1029. things like

  1030. comfort and

  1031. security and

  1032. wealth,

  1033. and the

  1034. heavy,

  1035. heavy yoke

  1036. that they

  1037. become.

  1038. Jesus says

  1039. these words

  1040. to us in

  1041. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  1042. 11.

  1043. He says,

  1044. come to me,

  1045. all you who

  1046. are weary

  1047. and burdened,

  1048. and I will

  1049. give you

  1050. rest.

  1051. Take my

  1052. yoke upon

  1053. you and

  1054. learn from

  1055. me, for I

  1056. am gentle

  1057. and humble

  1058. heart and

  1059. you will

  1060. find rest

  1061. for your

  1062. souls.

  1063. For my

  1064. yoke is

  1065. easy and

  1066. my burden

  1067. is light.

  1068. The glory

  1069. of Jesus

  1070. is that on

  1071. one hand,

  1072. he is our

  1073. total spiritual

  1074. opposite.

  1075. We're totally

  1076. incompatible with

  1077. him.

  1078. He's God,

  1079. he's holy,

  1080. he's righteous,

  1081. he's eternal.

  1082. He's our

  1083. total spiritual

  1084. opposite.

  1085. and yet,

  1086. at the same

  1087. time,

  1088. he's our

  1089. fully human

  1090. counterpart.

  1091. He knows

  1092. every single

  1093. burden that

  1094. you've faced

  1095. because he's

  1096. faced them

  1097. himself.

  1098. He's walked

  1099. the same roads

  1100. that you've

  1101. walked down,

  1102. he's plowed

  1103. the same fields

  1104. that you've

  1105. plowed,

  1106. and Jesus

  1107. is the one

  1108. person that

  1109. you can center

  1110. your life on.

  1111. He's the one

  1112. person that you

  1113. can align

  1114. yourself with.

  1115. He's the one

  1116. person that

  1117. you can harness

  1118. yourself to,

  1119. whose expectations

  1120. of you feel

  1121. light as a

  1122. feather,

  1123. whose commands

  1124. are restful

  1125. and life-giving

  1126. and joyful,

  1127. who when you

  1128. stumble and fall

  1129. again and

  1130. again,

  1131. is gentle

  1132. and lowly

  1133. in heart.

  1134. He's patient,

  1135. he's compassionate,

  1136. he's kind,

  1137. he's loving.

  1138. And when

  1139. Jesus carried

  1140. the heavy

  1141. yoke

  1142. of the wooden

  1143. cross,

  1144. when he carried

  1145. the heavy

  1146. yoke of the

  1147. cross,

  1148. no one else

  1149. carried it with

  1150. him.

  1151. He carried it,

  1152. he did it all

  1153. by himself,

  1154. and he did it

  1155. all for you

  1156. so that you

  1157. could believe

  1158. him,

  1159. so that you

  1160. could trust

  1161. him.

  1162. When he

  1163. says to

  1164. you,

  1165. my yoke

  1166. is easy,

  1167. my burden

  1168. is light,

  1169. come to me

  1170. all you who

  1171. are weary

  1172. and burdened

  1173. and I

  1174. will give

  1175. you rest.

  1176. And when

  1177. you see

  1178. that,

  1179. when you

  1180. see Jesus

  1181. as the one

  1182. who has

  1183. carried the

  1184. yoke of

  1185. the cross

  1186. for you,

  1187. you can

  1188. look at

  1189. all the

  1190. situations,

  1191. you can

  1192. look at

  1193. all the

  1194. relationships

  1195. in your

  1196. life,

  1197. and all

  1198. of their

  1199. complexity,

  1200. and all

  1201. of their

  1202. messiness,

  1203. and all

  1204. of their

  1205. difficulty,

  1206. and you

  1207. can look

  1208. at those

  1209. situations

  1210. and say,

  1211. maybe it's

  1212. time to

  1213. unhitch,

  1214. maybe it's

  1215. time to

  1216. unharness

  1217. myself,

  1218. so I can

  1219. pursue the

  1220. holy life

  1221. that God's

  1222. called me

  1223. to live,

  1224. that I might

  1225. know and

  1226. worship and

  1227. follow and

  1228. be in

  1229. relationship

  1230. with Jesus.

  1231. let's

  1232. pray.

  1233. Lord,

  1234. thank you

  1235. for your

  1236. word.

  1237. Thank you

  1238. that you

  1239. have made

  1240. us into

  1241. temples of

  1242. your presence,

  1243. our bodies,

  1244. our places

  1245. where you

  1246. dwell.

  1247. Lord,

  1248. I pray

  1249. that you

  1250. would help

  1251. us to see

  1252. the areas

  1253. of our

  1254. lives,

  1255. Lord,

  1256. where we

  1257. need to

  1258. pursue

  1259. holiness,

  1260. maybe where

  1261. we need

  1262. to draw

  1263. some

  1264. boundaries

  1265. in our

  1266. lives.

  1267. Thank you,

  1268. Jesus,

  1269. that you

  1270. have carried

  1271. the ultimate

  1272. yoke for

  1273. us.

  1274. You have

  1275. carried the

  1276. ultimate

  1277. burden for

  1278. us by

  1279. taking the

  1280. weight of

  1281. the cross

  1282. on yourself.

  1283. And it's in

  1284. your name we

  1285. pray.

  1286. Amen.
