  1. Lord, I ask that as we look at this passage

  2. that you would give us courage.

  3. Give me courage, Lord, for it's with some trepidation

  4. that we look at this theme of unbelief, Lord,

  5. knowing that there are many among us

  6. who have experienced a kind of pain

  7. that I have yet to experience, Lord,

  8. a pain that might cause doubt or unbelief,

  9. of questioning you.

  10. And so, Lord, would you encourage us all through your word?

  11. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart

  12. be pleasing in your sight, O Lord.

  13. Would you, Lord, please forgive the sin

  14. of the one delivering this message?

  15. And Lord Jesus, we would see you most of all.

  16. We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  17. We're continuing this morning our study of Psalm 119.

  18. It's what can be called an historical psalm.

  19. The psalm writer is one of the many Israelites

  20. in exile in Babylon after Judah,

  21. the southern kingdom, had been conquered by Babylon

  22. and its inhabitants sent off into exile

  23. to the kingdom of Babylon.

  24. The psalm recounts many of Israel's failures

  25. for two reasons.

  26. The psalmist wants to warn the exiles

  27. against the failures of their ancestors

  28. and more importantly,

  29. to tell of God's faithfulness and patience

  30. despite his people's failures.

  31. Now, so far we've heard through studying Psalm 106

  32. about the Israelites grumbling,

  33. about their jealousy,

  34. and about their idolatry.

  35. And this morning we're going to learn about her unbelief.

  36. Unbelief is a very relevant topic for us.

  37. I think most of us have heard some kind of polling

  38. about the number of evangelicals

  39. leaving the evangelical church.

  40. Not that we need the polling.

  41. I think all of us here know somebody

  42. or are close to a person

  43. who has left the faith that we once shared together.

  44. You've seen it happen in the life of a sibling,

  45. and a spouse,

  46. a roommate,

  47. a close friend,

  48. or one of your children.

  49. And for some of you,

  50. it's happening in your life right now.

  51. You're experiencing

  52. unbelief

  53. to some degree.

  54. And I would suggest

  55. that all of us,

  56. all of us are to some degree

  57. in danger of unbelief,

  58. or else there wouldn't be such

  59. stark warnings against unbelief

  60. in all of Scripture.

  61. We're going to look at what Numbers 14

  62. and Psalm 106

  63. have to say about unbelief.

  64. We're going to learn about God's character.

  65. So, what is unbelief?

  66. Who is God?

  67. But first I'd like to descend

  68. into the setting of Numbers 14.

  69. This is a very pivotal story

  70. in the whole drama of Scripture.

  71. So, let's descend

  72. into the desert

  73. of Kadesh

  74. in Paran.

  75. You're standing with all the other

  76. Israelites

  77. in the middle of this settlement.

  78. Kadesh lies at the very edge

  79. of the promised land,

  80. the land that was promised to you,

  81. your countrymen.

  82. And this same border

  83. would exist 3,500 years later

  84. between Egypt

  85. Egypt and Israel.

  86. It's been roughly

  87. a year and a half

  88. since you and the Israelites

  89. were rescued by God

  90. from Egypt

  91. passing through

  92. the Red Sea.

  93. And it's been 40 days

  94. since the 12 spies

  95. had been sent out

  96. to spy out

  97. the promised land.

  98. And they've just

  99. returned.

  100. And they're holding

  101. a single cluster

  102. of grapes.

  103. But the cluster

  104. is so big

  105. that they need to

  106. suspend it

  107. from a pole

  108. carried by

  109. two spies.

  110. And from their sacks,

  111. the spies also pull out

  112. pomegranates

  113. and figs.

  114. You can hear

  115. the reports

  116. that the spies

  117. are giving to Moses.

  118. They say it's a land

  119. flowing with milk

  120. and honey.

  121. In other words,

  122. it's not an agricultural

  123. wonderland

  124. like the Nile River Basin,

  125. but it's perfect land

  126. for cattle

  127. and for goats

  128. and for growing sweet things

  129. like dates

  130. and grapes.

  131. This marks

  132. a strong contrast

  133. to the barrenness

  134. and desolation

  135. of the desert

  136. that you find yourself

  137. in right now.

  138. It's hot,

  139. it's dusty,

  140. and dry.

  141. There's one big problem

  142. though

  143. that the spies report.

  144. Unless there's people there,

  145. they're not going to want

  146. to give up their land

  147. so easily.

  148. The spies report

  149. that they live

  150. in fortified cities,

  151. some with walls

  152. that are 24 feet thick.

  153. And the people themselves

  154. are huge.

  155. The spies believe them

  156. to be

  157. what are called

  158. Nephilim.

  159. These were

  160. mythic giants

  161. right from the pages

  162. of your holy

  163. and sacred history.

  164. And the spies say

  165. that the land

  166. devours everyone in it.

  167. That means

  168. that the tribes there

  169. are accustomed

  170. to war.

  171. So they have both

  172. the experience

  173. and the gear

  174. to defend themselves.

  175. And you look around,

  176. you look at yourself,

  177. you look at all

  178. the Israelites around you

  179. and you think,

  180. man,

  181. we are really short.

  182. We're super skinny.

  183. What's going to happen?

  184. It makes sense

  185. why the spies said

  186. that they felt like

  187. grasshoppers

  188. in comparison to them.

  189. So here's what's facing you.

  190. You're on the very doorstep

  191. of the vast land

  192. promised to you

  193. and your countrymen

  194. and you and everyone

  195. around you

  196. are convinced

  197. it's a death trap.

  198. When you step foot

  199. in this land,

  200. those of you

  201. who can hold a sword

  202. are going to get

  203. hacked to pieces

  204. by giants.

  205. And those

  206. who don't hold swords

  207. are going to be taken

  208. as plunder.

  209. You know,

  210. life was pretty hard

  211. in Egypt

  212. but at least

  213. your family

  214. could stick together.

  215. No one was smashing

  216. your skull in

  217. with a giant hammer.

  218. Of course,

  219. you seem to have pushed

  220. out of your memory

  221. a whole generation

  222. of baby boys

  223. being murdered

  224. by the Egyptians.

  225. But you're going

  226. to ignore

  227. that inconvenient truth

  228. at the moment.

  229. Anything

  230. to justify

  231. turning around.

  232. Of course,

  233. you know,

  234. it's Moses and Aaron

  235. that got us

  236. into this mess

  237. so let's get rid

  238. of them

  239. and let's choose

  240. another leader

  241. who will do

  242. what we want.

  243. And everyone around you

  244. is thinking

  245. the same thing.

  246. And people start

  247. to get really

  248. freaked out

  249. and angry

  250. and you feel like

  251. something's

  252. about to happen.

  253. People's murmuring

  254. has led to loud

  255. talking,

  256. has led to shouting,

  257. there's people

  258. sobbing.

  259. And you're feeling

  260. something too

  261. like you are

  262. feeling so desperate

  263. that with the right

  264. provocation

  265. you would do

  266. something violent

  267. to save your life

  268. and the lives

  269. of your family members.

  270. All you can think about,

  271. all that's fixated

  272. in your mind's eye

  273. is a giant.

  274. An angry,

  275. bloodthirsty man

  276. with a bloody sword

  277. bringing it down

  278. on your head.

  279. and you join

  280. the chorus.

  281. These are the words

  282. you hear

  283. coming from your mouth.

  284. You scream,

  285. if only we had died

  286. in Egypt

  287. or in this wilderness.

  288. Why is the Lord

  289. bringing us

  290. to this land

  291. only to let us

  292. fall by the sword?

  293. Our wives

  294. and children

  295. will be taken

  296. as plunder.

  297. Wouldn't it be better

  298. for us to go

  299. back to Egypt?

  300. Something curious

  301. happens

  302. during this frenzy

  303. which gets

  304. everyone's attention.

  305. Moses and Aaron

  306. who have led you

  307. into this death trap,

  308. they lie down

  309. on their stomachs,

  310. faces to the ground

  311. and you're not sure

  312. why.

  313. You assume it's because

  314. they're feeling

  315. really angry

  316. or maybe

  317. they're expecting

  318. the Lord

  319. to show up

  320. which would not be good.

  321. And then Caleb

  322. and Joshua,

  323. they tear their clothes.

  324. Okay,

  325. that has your attention.

  326. so it gets quiet.

  327. So quiet

  328. you can hear

  329. a pin drop

  330. on the dusty rocks

  331. of this desert

  332. that you're standing on.

  333. And Joshua

  334. and Caleb say,

  335. the land

  336. we passed through

  337. and explored

  338. is exceedingly good.

  339. If the Lord

  340. is pleased

  341. with us,

  342. He will lead us

  343. into that land,

  344. a land flowing

  345. with milk

  346. and honey.

  347. and He'll give it

  348. to us.

  349. Only do not

  350. rebel against

  351. the Lord

  352. and do not be afraid

  353. of the people

  354. of the land

  355. because we will

  356. devour them.

  357. Their protection

  358. is gone.

  359. But the Lord

  360. is with us.

  361. Do not be afraid

  362. of them.

  363. Well,

  364. you don't buy it.

  365. And you've heard enough.

  366. The dam has burst.

  367. People are losing

  368. their minds

  369. and now they're

  370. picking up stones.

  371. It seems to you

  372. and to those around you

  373. that Caleb and Joshua

  374. are breaking

  375. one of the Ten Commandments.

  376. Ten spies,

  377. good men,

  378. all share

  379. the same eyewitness account.

  380. Ten.

  381. Ten witnesses.

  382. Caleb and Joshua

  383. are bearing false witness

  384. against them.

  385. That's clear to you.

  386. In such a way

  387. as to lead you

  388. all to your,

  389. as to lead us,

  390. excuse me,

  391. as to lead you

  392. all to your deaths.

  393. So you think,

  394. let's bring about

  395. the Lord's judgment

  396. on them.

  397. Let's pick up

  398. these stones

  399. and stone them.

  400. Let's pause the narrative.

  401. Let's pause the narrative

  402. and consider a few things.

  403. First,

  404. let's consider

  405. Caleb's response.

  406. It's interesting to me

  407. that he does not agree.

  408. Excuse me,

  409. he doesn't disagree.

  410. He does not disagree,

  411. which means he agrees.

  412. He does not disagree

  413. with the Ten Spies

  414. as to the giants,

  415. okay?

  416. Yes,

  417. Caleb is saying,

  418. we agree.

  419. They are very big people.

  420. And yes,

  421. the cities are big

  422. and fortified.

  423. We have found

  424. some remains,

  425. actually,

  426. 3,500 years later.

  427. 24 feet thick

  428. these walls are.

  429. Caleb doesn't deny

  430. any of that.

  431. To deny it

  432. would be like

  433. gaslighting,

  434. right?

  435. Well,

  436. you know,

  437. if he were to deny it,

  438. it would be like saying this,

  439. you know,

  440. what you saw,

  441. you didn't actually see.

  442. You must have had

  443. some kind of anxiety

  444. or heat stroke,

  445. which is making you

  446. exaggerate in your mind

  447. what really isn't

  448. that big of a deal.

  449. It's important to note this

  450. because, like,

  451. we face giants,

  452. too.

  453. We face giants,

  454. too.

  455. And perhaps someone

  456. has tried to convince you

  457. otherwise,

  458. that the giant you're facing

  459. isn't really a giant.

  460. And if you're like me,

  461. more than likely,

  462. you're good at

  463. gaslighting yourself,

  464. all on your own.

  465. And you've questioned

  466. your own sanity

  467. and your own perception.

  468. And I think what Caleb

  469. is saying is,

  470. yes,

  471. the giants

  472. are real.

  473. pain,

  474. trauma,

  475. injustice,

  476. death,

  477. sickness,

  478. abuse,

  479. abandonment,

  480. suffering,

  481. doubts.

  482. Whatever it is

  483. that looms

  484. largest in your view,

  485. the act of trusting

  486. in God

  487. doesn't call for you

  488. to deny the reality

  489. of those giants.

  490. It's a matter

  491. of attention.

  492. The giants are big,

  493. but the Lord

  494. is bigger.

  495. The giants are big,

  496. but the Lord

  497. is bigger.

  498. People took up

  499. a lot of interesting

  500. things during COVID.

  501. One of my sons and I

  502. we took up

  503. adventure racing.

  504. We watched

  505. Eco Challenge

  506. on Netflix.

  507. And we thought,

  508. oh,

  509. let's do something

  510. like that.

  511. So we started

  512. training for

  513. one of these races

  514. which involved

  515. running,

  516. orienteering,

  517. paddling,

  518. and mountain biking.

  519. And in learning

  520. mountain biking,

  521. I have had to

  522. painfully relearn

  523. what I learned

  524. when I was 15.

  525. And that was when

  526. I learned how to

  527. drive a car.

  528. The lesson is this.

  529. Whatever you focus

  530. on,

  531. that's where you go.

  532. Whatever you focus

  533. on,

  534. that's where you go.

  535. So if I'm

  536. mountain biking,

  537. and if there's a

  538. tight turn to

  539. avoid a tree,

  540. I better focus

  541. on the path

  542. where I'm supposed

  543. to go.

  544. Okay?

  545. But it's human

  546. nature when one

  547. sees a giant tree

  548. coming at you

  549. very fast,

  550. like an

  551. full of wrath.

  552. To keep looking

  553. at it,

  554. that's what we're

  555. born to do.

  556. Like,

  557. that's how we

  558. stay out of danger

  559. is to look at the

  560. thing that's causing

  561. us danger.

  562. But when you're

  563. mountain biking,

  564. or when you're

  565. driving,

  566. when you're

  567. mountain biking

  568. and you look

  569. at the danger,

  570. you're going to

  571. collide with the

  572. tree.

  573. So you have to

  574. train your eyes

  575. and you have to

  576. train your mind

  577. to be continually

  578. looking at where

  579. you want to go.

  580. Or else you

  581. collide with the

  582. tree,

  583. which I perhaps

  584. have painfully

  585. learned,

  586. you go exactly

  587. where your

  588. attention is

  589. focused.

  590. You go exactly

  591. where your

  592. attention is

  593. focused.

  594. Caleb gets

  595. that.

  596. Okay?

  597. Hear what

  598. Caleb says.

  599. The land we

  600. promised,

  601. excuse me,

  602. the land we

  603. passed through

  604. and explored

  605. is exceedingly

  606. good.

  607. Okay?

  608. He's focused

  609. on the Lord's

  610. promise.

  611. God's promises

  612. reflect his

  613. character,

  614. who he is.

  615. He's good,

  616. merciful,

  617. wise,

  618. just.

  619. And Caleb

  620. says,

  621. if the Lord

  622. is pleased

  623. with us,

  624. he will lead

  625. us into

  626. that land.

  627. The Lord

  628. is with us.

  629. Again,

  630. Caleb is

  631. focused on

  632. the Lord

  633. and his

  634. love and

  635. his faithfulness

  636. to his

  637. people,

  638. whom he has

  639. pledged

  640. himself to.

  641. Unbelief

  642. is born,

  643. I think this

  644. is what this

  645. is saying,

  646. unbelief is

  647. born when we

  648. have our

  649. attention fixed

  650. on something

  651. else.

  652. Unbelief

  653. has an

  654. object.

  655. It's not

  656. like belief

  657. has an object

  658. and unbelief

  659. does not.

  660. I don't

  661. think.

  662. Each has

  663. their own

  664. object.

  665. Unbelief

  666. has an

  667. object like

  668. crashing my

  669. mountain bike

  670. has an

  671. object.

  672. It's the

  673. tree.

  674. Belief is

  675. nurtured

  676. when our

  677. attention is

  678. focused on

  679. God and

  680. his character,

  681. revealed in

  682. his promises

  683. and in

  684. his acts

  685. on behalf

  686. of his

  687. people.

  688. people.

  689. So how

  690. is God

  691. revealed in

  692. Numbers

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  693. chapter 14?

  694. Well,

  695. he's revealed

  696. as both

  697. just and

  698. merciful.

  699. The Lord

  700. descends and

  701. appears at the

  702. tent of meeting

  703. and he says

  704. to Moses,

  705. how long

  706. will this

  707. people despise

  708. me and how

  709. long will they

  710. not believe

  711. in me?

  712. In spite of

  713. all the signs

  714. that I've

  715. done among

  716. them,

  717. I will

  718. strike them

  719. with the

  720. pestilence

  721. and disinherit

  722. them and I

  723. will make you,

  724. Moses,

  725. a nation

  726. greater and

  727. mightier than

  728. they.

  729. Israel had

  730. turned their

  731. backs on God.

  732. They wanted

  733. to return to

  734. Egypt.

  735. They wanted

  736. to reverse

  737. the exodus.

  738. They wanted

  739. to reverse

  740. the foundational

  741. event in

  742. their identity

  743. as a people.

  744. It would be

  745. just then for

  746. God to turn

  747. his back on

  748. them.

  749. It would be

  750. perfectly just.

  751. He didn't owe

  752. them anything.

  753. But Moses

  754. appeals to God.

  755. He prays to God

  756. and he appeals

  757. to two things.

  758. First, he appeals

  759. to God's honor

  760. and power.

  761. Lord, what

  762. would Egypt

  763. say?

  764. Well, Lord,

  765. Egypt would say

  766. you weren't able

  767. to do what you

  768. said you were

  769. going to do.

  770. And then Moses

  771. appeals to

  772. something else.

  773. He appeals to

  774. God's mercy.

  775. Moses prayed,

  776. please pardon

  777. the iniquity

  778. of this people

  779. according to

  780. the greatness

  781. of your

  782. steadfast love.

  783. So the Lord

  784. relents,

  785. but not without

  786. consequences for

  787. Israel.

  788. The generation

  789. of adults that

  790. turned their

  791. backs on the

  792. promised land

  793. would not be

  794. able to cross

  795. over, but

  796. their children

  797. would.

  798. The ten spies

  799. who gave the

  800. bad report

  801. would not be

  802. able to cross

  803. over, but

  804. the two spies

  805. who did,

  806. Joshua and

  807. Caleb, they

  808. would.

  809. Justice would

  810. have the Lord

  811. visiting the

  812. iniquity of

  813. the fathers

  814. on the

  815. children to

  816. the third

  817. and fourth

  818. generation we

  819. read elsewhere

  820. in Scripture,

  821. but God

  822. restricts his

  823. discipline just

  824. to this

  825. generation and

  826. is showing

  827. them mercy,

  828. showing mercy

  829. to his people

  830. to whom he

  831. has pledged

  832. himself.

  833. There's

  834. another goal

  835. of the

  836. psalmist

  837. in writing

  838. Psalm 106.

  839. You remember

  840. the first

  841. one was

  842. don't make

  843. the mistakes

  844. that your

  845. ancestors made,

  846. so don't

  847. fall into

  848. unbelief.

  849. Don't despise

  850. the Lord

  851. and his

  852. promises.

  853. The second

  854. thing the

  855. psalmist

  856. wants to

  857. do is

  858. in spite

  859. of everything,

  860. the Lord

  861. remains faithful

  862. to us.

  863. The Lord

  864. remains patient

  865. with us,

  866. constantly

  867. extending his

  868. mercy to

  869. us, even

  870. when we

  871. fail, even

  872. when we

  873. mess up, even

  874. when we divert

  875. our attention

  876. from him and

  877. everything he's

  878. done for us.

  879. So the

  880. psalmist gives

  881. us the

  882. warning.

  883. How then can

  884. we avoid

  885. unbelief?

  886. Well, it's

  887. actually in

  888. some ways

  889. rather simple

  890. and yet it

  891. takes a

  892. lifetime of

  893. constant

  894. vigilance.

  895. We avoid

  896. unbelief

  897. through

  898. remembrance.

  899. We avoid

  900. unbelief

  901. through

  902. remembrance.

  903. We avoid

  904. unbelief

  905. through

  906. remembering.

  907. Through

  908. paying attention

  909. to God,

  910. paying attention

  911. to his

  912. character,

  913. his deeds

  914. on behalf

  915. of his

  916. people,

  917. I'd like to

  918. offer you

  919. three ways.

  920. There's a lot

  921. of ways we

  922. can remember

  923. God and

  924. remember him

  925. and his

  926. works.

  927. I'm going

  928. to offer

  929. you three

  930. ways.

  931. The first

  932. one has been

  933. really important

  934. to me.

  935. It's my

  936. family.

  937. It's what we

  938. call the

  939. daily

  940. examine.

  941. The daily

  942. examine.

  943. E-X-A-M-E-M.

  944. At the core

  945. of the daily

  946. examine is

  947. reviewing the

  948. emotions we've

  949. had throughout

  950. the course of

  951. the day.

  952. We pray out

  953. of those.

  954. What we

  955. notice when

  956. we reflect

  957. on our

  958. day is that

  959. we experience

  960. both

  961. consolation

  962. and

  963. desolation.

  964. Consolation,

  965. desolation.

  966. A person

  967. dwells in a

  968. state of

  969. consolation when

  970. he or she

  971. is moving

  972. towards God's

  973. active presence

  974. in the world.

  975. And we know

  976. we are moving

  977. in this way

  978. when we sense

  979. the growth

  980. of love

  981. or faith

  982. or hope

  983. in us.

  984. A person

  985. dwells in a

  986. state of

  987. desolation

  988. when she

  989. or he

  990. is moving

  991. away from

  992. God's active

  993. presence in

  994. the world.

  995. And we know

  996. we are moving

  997. in this way

  998. when we sense

  999. the growth

  1000. of resentment

  1001. and gratitude,

  1002. selfishness,

  1003. doubt,

  1004. fear,

  1005. and so

  1006. on.

  1007. The way

  1008. we practice

  1009. this in

  1010. my family

  1011. is to talk

  1012. about

  1013. consolation

  1014. and desolation

  1015. as a

  1016. paradox.

  1017. I've told

  1018. you this

  1019. before.

  1020. It was

  1021. seven years

  1022. ago,

  1023. you remember?

  1024. So let me

  1025. tell you

  1026. again.

  1027. A paradox,

  1028. right?

  1029. We can go

  1030. through a

  1031. day being

  1032. pulled towards

  1033. God and being

  1034. pulled away

  1035. from him,

  1036. experiencing

  1037. consolation and

  1038. desolation.

  1039. It's a

  1040. paradox,

  1041. which sounds

  1042. like a

  1043. pair of

  1044. ducks.

  1045. So we

  1046. as family

  1047. talk about

  1048. two ducks,

  1049. the yay

  1050. duck and

  1051. the yuck

  1052. duck.

  1053. And the

  1054. yay duck

  1055. is this

  1056. bright,

  1057. gleaming,

  1058. shiny duck.

  1059. Smells

  1060. good,

  1061. fluffy.

  1062. And there's

  1063. the yuck

  1064. duck,

  1065. smelly,

  1066. dirty,

  1067. gross,

  1068. noisy,

  1069. repellent.

  1070. So yay

  1071. ducks and

  1072. yuck ducks.

  1073. And so at

  1074. the end of

  1075. the day,

  1076. we say,

  1077. what are

  1078. your yay

  1079. ducks and

  1080. your yuck

  1081. ducks?

  1082. We also

  1083. did this a

  1084. few weeks

  1085. ago.

  1086. I took two

  1087. of my

  1088. sons and

  1089. five of

  1090. their friends

  1091. to a

  1092. summer camp

  1093. for a

  1094. week.

  1095. And every

  1096. night we

  1097. would do

  1098. yay ducks

  1099. and yuck

  1100. ducks.

  1101. And there

  1102. was a

  1103. kid who

  1104. was the

  1105. most homesick

  1106. I've ever

  1107. seen anybody

  1108. in my life.

  1109. It was

  1110. really sad.

  1111. I just

  1112. cried for

  1113. like three

  1114. or four

  1115. hours straight.

  1116. But by the

  1117. end of the

  1118. first day,

  1119. he was

  1120. saying,

  1121. this is the

  1122. greatest camp

  1123. in the

  1124. world.

  1125. So that

  1126. was great.

  1127. So at

  1128. the end

  1129. of the

  1130. day,

  1131. we said,

  1132. what are

  1133. your yuck

  1134. ducks?

  1135. And he

  1136. volunteered,

  1137. like,

  1138. well,

  1139. I felt

  1140. really

  1141. homesick

  1142. and I

  1143. missed

  1144. my

  1145. family.

  1146. So the

  1147. point of

  1148. talking about

  1149. your yuck

  1150. ducks is

  1151. to pray

  1152. out of

  1153. that.

  1154. Like,

  1155. well,

  1156. what happened

  1157. because of

  1158. your

  1159. homesickness?

  1160. And he

  1161. started to

  1162. observe that

  1163. all of his

  1164. friends,

  1165. his six

  1166. other friends,

  1167. it was

  1168. beautiful,

  1169. guys.

  1170. All six

  1171. of these

  1172. boys rallied

  1173. around this

  1174. one boy,

  1175. cheering him

  1176. up.

  1177. Doing

  1178. things with

  1179. him,

  1180. it was

  1181. awesome.

  1182. And he

  1183. also found

  1184. courage,

  1185. a courage

  1186. that he

  1187. had never

  1188. really sought

  1189. for,

  1190. a kind

  1191. that he

  1192. never knew

  1193. he had.

  1194. So we

  1195. were able

  1196. to pray

  1197. out of

  1198. that,

  1199. Lord,

  1200. thank you

  1201. for the

  1202. courage

  1203. you gave

  1204. me in

  1205. light of

  1206. my really

  1207. missing

  1208. my family,

  1209. thank you

  1210. for my

  1211. friends.

  1212. And so

  1213. can you

  1214. imagine

  1215. doing this

  1216. every day?

  1217. So every

  1218. day is full

  1219. of consolations

  1220. and desolations

  1221. and praying

  1222. out of

  1223. your

  1224. desolations

  1225. and finding,

  1226. oh God,

  1227. you were

  1228. present there.

  1229. You were

  1230. working there.

  1231. You were

  1232. working on

  1233. my behalf.

  1234. You were

  1235. loving me,

  1236. showing me

  1237. grace.

  1238. So when

  1239. we consider

  1240. both our

  1241. consolations

  1242. and desolations,

  1243. we discover

  1244. and remember

  1245. how God

  1246. has been

  1247. showing us

  1248. goodness

  1249. and faithfulness

  1250. to us.

  1251. So the

  1252. first is

  1253. the daily

  1254. examine.

  1255. Yay ducks

  1256. and yuck ducks.

  1257. The second

  1258. way is to

  1259. surround

  1260. yourself

  1261. the second

  1262. way is to

  1263. remember

  1264. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1265. chapter 3.

  1266. Okay?

  1267. So in

  1268. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1269. chapter 3,

  1270. the writer

  1271. of Hebrews

  1272. is referencing

  1273. Numbers 14

  1274. and warning

  1275. his readers

  1276. about

  1277. unbelief.

  1278. He writes,

  1279. take care,

  1280. brothers,

  1281. lest there

  1282. be in

  1283. any of

  1284. you an

  1285. evil,

  1286. unbelieving

  1287. heart,

  1288. leading you

  1289. to fall

  1290. away from

  1291. the living

  1292. God.

  1293. But exhort

  1294. one another

  1295. every day

  1296. as long

  1297. as it

  1298. is called

  1299. today.

  1300. That none

  1301. of you

  1302. may be

  1303. hardened

  1304. by the

  1305. deceitfulness

  1306. of sin.

  1307. In other

  1308. words,

  1309. if you

  1310. want to

  1311. safeguard

  1312. yourself

  1313. against

  1314. unbelief,

  1315. surround

  1316. yourself

  1317. with a

  1318. bunch

  1319. of

  1320. Caleb's,

  1321. right?

  1322. Surround

  1323. yourself

  1324. with a

  1325. bunch

  1326. of

  1327. people

  1328. who are

  1329. going to

  1330. tell you,

  1331. yes,

  1332. the giants

  1333. are big,

  1334. but the

  1335. Lord is

  1336. with you.

  1337. And the

  1338. Lord has

  1339. taken away

  1340. its

  1341. protection,

  1342. and he's

  1343. going to

  1344. conquer these

  1345. giants.

  1346. The Lord

  1347. loves you.

  1348. We do

  1349. this by

  1350. attending

  1351. worship on

  1352. Sundays.

  1353. You can be a

  1354. part of a

  1355. core group.

  1356. Sign-ups happen

  1357. soon.

  1358. They meet in the

  1359. fall and the

  1360. spring.

  1361. You can meet

  1362. with believers

  1363. who will pray

  1364. for you and

  1365. encourage you

  1366. and point you

  1367. to Jesus when

  1368. your giants are

  1369. taking up all

  1370. your mind space.

  1371. to

  1372. a third way

  1373. to remember

  1374. the way

  1375. Jesus told

  1376. us to

  1377. remember.

  1378. Excuse me,

  1379. the third

  1380. way to

  1381. remember

  1382. is the

  1383. way

  1384. Jesus told

  1385. us to

  1386. remember,

  1387. and that's

  1388. to regularly

  1389. sit at this

  1390. table,

  1391. eating this

  1392. meal,

  1393. with God's

  1394. family,

  1395. doing this

  1396. in remembrance

  1397. of me.

  1398. In Numbers

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  1399. chapter 14,

  1400. we see both

  1401. mercy and

  1402. justice,

  1403. but their

  1404. intention,

  1405. their intention,

  1406. and it's

  1407. unclear from

  1408. Numbers 14

  1409. how that

  1410. tension is

  1411. resolved.

  1412. But at this

  1413. table, we see

  1414. it clearly.

  1415. On the

  1416. cross,

  1417. Christ has

  1418. absorbed all

  1419. the consequences

  1420. of our

  1421. unbelief.

  1422. He dies

  1423. outside the

  1424. gates of the

  1425. holy city,

  1426. absorbing all

  1427. that God's

  1428. justice requires

  1429. that we might

  1430. enter into it

  1431. and enjoy the

  1432. fulfillment of

  1433. all of God's

  1434. promises,

  1435. including,

  1436. and especially,

  1437. eternal life

  1438. with him.

  1439. Eternal life

  1440. with him

  1441. after he

  1442. has vanquished

  1443. every giant.

  1444. Pain,

  1445. trauma,

  1446. sickness,

  1447. abuse,

  1448. abandonment,

  1449. suffering,

  1450. and doubt.

  1451. He will once

  1452. and forever

  1453. destroy.

  1454. The giants

  1455. are big.

  1456. The Lord is

  1457. bigger.

  1458. So as we come

  1459. to this table,

  1460. let us fix our

  1461. eyes on Jesus,

  1462. the pioneer

  1463. and perfecter

  1464. of our faith.

  1465. For the joy

  1466. set before him,

  1467. he endured the

  1468. cross,

  1469. scorning its

  1470. shame,

  1471. and sat down

  1472. at the right

  1473. hand of the

  1474. throne of God.

  1475. Consider him

  1476. who endured

  1477. such opposition

  1478. from sinners

  1479. so that you

  1480. will not grow

  1481. weary

  1482. and lose

  1483. heart.

  1484. In the name

  1485. of the Father

  1486. and of the Son

  1487. and of the Holy

  1488. Spirit,

  1489. Amen.

  1490. Let's pray.

  1491. Lord,

  1492. we ask

  1493. that as we

  1494. remember you

  1495. at this table,

  1496. you would

  1497. encourage us.

  1498. Lord,

  1499. thank you

  1500. for not just

  1501. leaving us

  1502. teachings,

  1503. but you

  1504. leave us

  1505. yourself,

  1506. you leave us

  1507. your Holy

  1508. Spirit,

  1509. and you

  1510. leave us

  1511. this meal

  1512. with which

  1513. we're going

  1514. to be fed.

  1515. So encourage

  1516. us and

  1517. strengthen us.

  1518. Lord,

  1519. we believe.

  1520. Help our

  1521. unbelief.

  1522. In Jesus'

  1523. name,

  1524. Amen.
