  1. Please stand for the reading of the gospel.

  2. This morning's gospel reading comes from John chapter 3, verses 1 through 21.

    John 3:1–21

  3. This is the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John.

  4. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

  5. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  6. And this man came to Jesus by night and said to him,

  7. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher from God,

  8. for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  9. Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again,

  10. he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  11. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old?

  12. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  13. Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

  14. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  15. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

  16. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again.

  17. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound,

  18. but you don't know where it comes from or where it goes.

  19. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

  20. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be?

  21. Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel,

  22. and yet you do not understand these things?

  23. Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know

  24. and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.

  25. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe,

  26. how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

  27. No one has ascended into heaven except he who ascended from heaven, the Son of Man.

  28. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  29. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  30. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  31. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son

  32. that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  33. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

  34. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  35. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  36. but whoever does not believe is condemned already

  37. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  38. And this is the judgment.

  39. The light has come into the world,

  40. and people loved darkness rather than the light

  41. because their works were evil.

  42. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light

  43. and does not come to the light,

  44. lest his work should be exposed.

  45. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  46. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  47. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  48. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  49. You can be seated.

  50. C.S. Lewis was a professor of ancient medieval literature

  51. at Oxford and Cambridge between the 1920s and 1960s,

  52. and he grew up in a home that attended church.

  53. But as he grew older and as he entered into his teenage years,

  54. he gradually fell away from his faith.

  55. And by the time he was finally an adult,

  56. he was a decided atheist.

  57. And in his biography, Surprised by Joy,

  58. Lewis describes his journey of conversion

  59. from being an atheist to becoming a Christian.

  60. And for him, it was a highly intellectual experience.

  61. It involved a very slow transition over a gradual many years.

  62. It was a transition from a belief in atheism

  63. to then a belief in moral absolutes,

  64. to believing in God,

  65. to finally being a follower of Christ.

  66. But this was a transition that took many years.

  67. It involved reading many thinkers and philosophers

  68. like G.K. Chesterton and novelists like George MacDonald.

  69. It also involved years of friendship and conversations

  70. with people like Hugo Dyson and Owen Barfield

  71. and J.R. Tolkien, who wrote The Lord of the Rings.

  72. But it also involved lots of reluctance and opposition on Lewis' part.

  73. Towards the end of the book,

  74. he describes himself as the most reluctant convert

  75. in all of England.

  76. And for Lewis, the time when he actually realized

  77. that he was a Christian wasn't all that extraordinary or dramatic.

  78. It was actually on a drive one day

  79. with some friends from the town of Oxford

  80. to a zoo in a small village just north of London

  81. called Whipsnade.

  82. And here's how he describes this moment.

  83. He says,

  84. I know very well when,

  85. but hardly how the final step was taken.

  86. I was driven to Whipsnade one sunny morning,

  87. and when we set out,

  88. I did not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  89. But when we reached the zoo, I did.

  90. Yet I had not exactly spent the journey in thought,

  91. nor in great emotion.

  92. Emotional is perhaps the last word we can apply

  93. to some of the most important events.

  94. It was more like when a man,

  95. after a long sleep,

  96. still lying motionless in bed,

  97. becomes aware that he is now awake.

  98. Our passage this morning in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  99. is a conversation that Jesus has

  100. with a man named Nicodemus about conversion,

  101. about the new birth,

  102. and how somebody becomes a follower of Jesus.

  103. And right off the bat,

  104. I think I have to acknowledge

  105. that in a place like Washington, D.C.,

  106. it's hard to even mention words like conversion

  107. or the new birth

  108. without making some people cringe,

  109. without making some of us cringe.

  110. These are cringe-worthy words in our modern culture.

  111. In our modern culture,

  112. talking about the new birth,

  113. talking about conversion,

  114. can make us cringe for a lot of reasons.

  115. For some of us,

  116. even the idea of trying to convert someone

  117. to another faith or religion

  118. seems intolerant and morally regressive.

  119. For others of us,

  120. the term born-again Christian

  121. is conflated with politics

  122. or particular political persuasion.

  123. And for others of us,

  124. it recalls bad experiences

  125. that we've had in our past,

  126. maybe in the church.

  127. There's a lot of negative associations

  128. that arise from

  129. talking about conversion and the new birth

  130. and about what Scripture teaches.

  131. And so that's why

  132. what I'd like to do this morning

  133. as we look at John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  134. is to actually address

  135. some of those misconceptions.

  136. We're not going to address all of them,

  137. but we'll address three.

  138. We're going to look at three misconceptions

  139. about conversion and the new birth

  140. and look at how our passage

  141. informs and speaks to those misconceptions.

  142. So three misconceptions about the new birth

  143. and what our passage has to say about it.

  144. So here's the first one.

  145. The first one,

  146. one I think misconception

  147. that a lot of people have

  148. about conversion and the new birth

  149. is that it basically involves

  150. somebody getting more religion.

  151. Oftentimes people use that

  152. when referring to someone else

  153. who has maybe said

  154. that they have had a conversion experience,

  155. that they've gotten religion.

  156. And often what people mean

  157. when they say that

  158. is that that person has

  159. maybe gotten more serious about morality.

  160. They've added more rules to their life.

  161. They've gotten more serious

  162. about going to church.

  163. Another way of thinking about it

  164. is that they've added the app of religion

  165. onto the home screen of their life.

  166. That in all of the different things

  167. and parts of their life,

  168. it's another app that they've added

  169. to their well-curated individualistic life.

  170. But is that what the new birth

  171. and conversion are?

  172. Is it just adding,

  173. is it just getting more serious about the rules?

  174. Is it just adding another app to your life?

  175. Well, let's look at our text.

  176. In verse one,

  177. we are told that Nicodemus was a Pharisee.

  178. Pharisees were a group of religious Jewish teachers

  179. who emphasized careful interpretation

  180. and observance of the Torah, the law.

  181. And they believed that

  182. through their particular careful way

  183. of observing the law and applying it,

  184. that this would be part of the way

  185. that the Messiah would come

  186. and restore his kingdom.

  187. So Nicodemus was a man with great biblical knowledge

  188. and a desire to keep God's commands

  189. and to apply it strictly in his life

  190. and the lives of other people.

  191. And verse two tells us

  192. that he came to Jesus by night.

  193. Now, we're not told specifically why in the text,

  194. why it is that he comes at night,

  195. but we can do some godly speculation.

  196. It's likely that he came at night

  197. because he wanted to come and talk to Jesus in secret

  198. so that he wouldn't be seen in public

  199. in fear that others or other Pharisees

  200. or members of the Sanhedrin would find out

  201. and that he would lose his reputation.

  202. To be seen with Jesus publicly during the day

  203. might ruin his standing

  204. in the community among the Pharisees.

  205. So he comes to Jesus at night and he says to him,

  206. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher

  207. who has come from God,

  208. for no one can do these signs that you do

  209. unless God is with him.

  210. Now, on first glance,

  211. this actually sounds like a compliment.

  212. It sounds like he's acknowledging something

  213. that's true about Jesus.

  214. And I probably would have expected Jesus

  215. to affirm what Nicodemus says here.

  216. You're right, Nicodemus.

  217. Finally, one of you actually believes me.

  218. But he doesn't do that.

  219. He actually turns the conversation

  220. and he does it by, I think,

  221. looking into the heart of Nicodemus

  222. and seeing what it is that he's really saying.

  223. He looks into Nicodemus' heart

  224. and he looks past all of his desire

  225. to keep the law and the Torah.

  226. He looks past all of his religious credentials

  227. and motivations.

  228. And he sees, on one hand,

  229. a genuine desire to follow the law

  230. and keep God's commands.

  231. But I think he also sees a desire

  232. to just add Jesus as another app

  233. into his already preexisting religious system.

  234. He says to a man with great knowledge of the Bible,

  235. with a great desire to follow the law,

  236. who even acknowledges that Jesus is from God,

  237. all of that is not enough to see the kingdom

  238. and enter the kingdom.

  239. You need something else.

  240. You need something else

  241. that being a good, moral, religious person

  242. can't give you.

  243. You need new life.

  244. You need to be born again.

  245. And in verse 4, Nicodemus asks what I think

  246. is a totally fair question.

  247. He says, well, how can this be?

  248. How can somebody enter a second time

  249. into their mother's womb?

  250. I mean, how in the world is that possible

  251. for somebody to be born again?

  252. And Jesus responds, I'm not talking about

  253. another physical birth,

  254. but I'm talking about another spiritual birth.

  255. He says, unless one is born of water and the spirit,

  256. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  257. Water and the spirit.

  258. Water here is a reference to baptism.

  259. Baptism is a sign.

  260. It's a sacrament.

  261. It's a picture of what the Holy Spirit does

  262. in the new birth.

  263. In the new birth,

  264. the Holy Spirit gives us a new nature

  265. that imparts to us new spiritual life.

  266. In the new birth,

  267. the Holy Spirit gives us a new nature

  268. that imparts to us new spiritual life.

  269. The theological word for this

  270. is called regeneration.

  271. Regeneration.

  272. Through regeneration,

  273. the Holy Spirit indwells us,

  274. takes up residence inside of us,

  275. and transforms our hearts

  276. in a way that transforms the rest of us,

  277. that every aspect of our mind

  278. and our emotions and our will and our bodies,

  279. that it gives us new desires.

  280. It gives us a new love for God,

  281. a new love for his word,

  282. a new love for other people,

  283. and it gives us new power.

  284. The ability, new power to follow God

  285. and obey him,

  286. it's the transformation of our desires,

  287. it's the transformation of our hearts

  288. and our nature.

  289. And so this is where we see

  290. that the new birth and conversion

  291. aren't about getting more religion.

  292. It's not about getting more religion,

  293. but it's actually about receiving a new nature.

  294. It's about receiving a new nature.

  295. And twice in this passage,

  296. Jesus tells Nicodemus

  297. that he actually should not have been

  298. surprised by this.

  299. He says,

  300. don't marvel that I am saying this to you.

  301. Nicodemus, being the biblical scholar

  302. and teacher that he was,

  303. should have remembered,

  304. should have called to mind

  305. the words of the prophet Ezekiel

  306. in Ezekiel chapter 36.

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  307. This was an Old Testament passage

  308. about how God would literally put his spirit

  309. in the hearts of his people.

  310. Ezekiel chapter 36 says,

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  311. I will sprinkle clean water on you,

  312. which is again this reference to baptism.

  313. And you shall be clean

  314. from all your uncleanness

  315. and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

  316. And I will give you a new heart

  317. and a new spirit I will put within you.

  318. And I will remove the heart of stone

  319. from the heart of flesh

  320. and give you a heart of flesh.

  321. And I will put my spirit within you.

  322. This is a promise in the Old Testament

  323. about God's plan

  324. to indwell people with his spirit.

  325. And this is the new birth.

  326. It involves cleansing

  327. from the old sinful nature,

  328. this removal of the heart of stone

  329. and the creation of a new nature,

  330. the creation of a new heart,

  331. a heart of flesh.

  332. And so that's what the new birth is.

  333. That's what the Holy Spirit does

  334. in the new birth.

  335. But I think that begs a question for us,

  336. which is,

  337. why do we need this in the first place?

  338. Like, why do we need the new birth?

  339. Why do we need conversion to happen

  340. in the first place?

  341. Why do we need to receive a new nature?

  342. And part of the answer comes

  343. in what Jesus says later in verse 19.

  344. Later in verse 19, Jesus says,

  345. this is the judgment.

  346. The light has come into the world

  347. and people loved the darkness

  348. rather than the light

  349. because their works were evil.

  350. He's saying that at our core,

  351. our fundamental problem

  352. isn't that we sometimes do bad things,

  353. but that at our core,

  354. our fundamental problem

  355. is that we actually love the darkness.

  356. Scripture teaches that

  357. the fundamental problem of humanity

  358. isn't that we're imperfect people

  359. who just need to learn

  360. how to be better people.

  361. It's not that we're ignorant

  362. or uneducated people

  363. that just need to be taught

  364. or enlightened.

  365. It's that we are dead people

  366. who need to be made alive.

  367. We are slaves who need to be liberated

  368. from the power of sin and death.

  369. This is what Ephesians chapter 2 says.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  370. Ephesians chapter 2 says,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  371. and you were dead in the trespasses,

  372. in the trespasses and sins

  373. in which you once walked,

  374. following the course of this world.

  375. We all once lived

  376. in the passions of our flesh,

  377. carrying out the desires of the body

  378. and the mind,

  379. and we're by nature

  380. children of wrath.

  381. Apart from God's intervention,

  382. apart from the regenerating work

  383. of the Holy Spirit,

  384. we are dead in our sins.

  385. We're spiritually dead.

  386. We're held captive to its power,

  387. and we cannot create new life

  388. in our hearts on our own.

  389. And so that is why we need

  390. the new birth.

  391. That is why we need a new nature.

  392. That's why we need

  393. the regenerating power

  394. of the Holy Spirit.

  395. We don't just need another app

  396. on the home screen of our life.

  397. We need an entirely new operating system.

  398. We need an entirely new operating system.

  399. And that's why getting more religion

  400. or getting more serious

  401. about the rules

  402. isn't going to deal fundamentally

  403. with our main problem.

  404. We need to be made alive.

  405. We need new hearts.

  406. We need a new spirit.

  407. And this is also why

  408. the new birth

  409. isn't just for

  410. people who aren't religious.

  411. It's for people

  412. who grew up in the church.

  413. It's for people like Nicodemus

  414. who knew the Bible

  415. and taught the Bible,

  416. who even believed

  417. that Jesus came from God,

  418. but didn't have the life

  419. that Jesus came to bring.

  420. And so everyone needs

  421. the new birth,

  422. even the church people.

  423. Even the church people.

  424. So that's the first thing

  425. that we see

  426. is that the new birth

  427. isn't getting more religion,

  428. but it's receiving a new nature.

  429. Misconception number two,

  430. another misconception

  431. about conversion

  432. and the new birth

  433. is that it always involves

  434. a dramatic emotional experience

  435. of decision.

  436. or that it involves

  437. or that it involves

  438. an experience

  439. that can feel

  440. forced

  441. or manufactured

  442. or maybe even

  443. emotionally manipulative.

  444. But is that the case?

  445. Does conversion

  446. and new birth

  447. always involve

  448. a dramatic emotional experience?

  449. Well, let's look at our text.

  450. Jesus continues

  451. the conversation

  452. in verse eight

  453. and he says,

  454. the wind blows

  455. where it wishes

  456. and you hear its sound,

  457. but you do not know

  458. where it comes from

  459. or where it goes.

  460. So it is

  461. with everyone

  462. born of the Spirit.

  463. Both the Hebrew word

  464. ruach

  465. and the Greek word

  466. pneuma

  467. can both be translated

  468. as wind

  469. or spirit

  470. or breath.

  471. And here,

  472. Jesus brings those together

  473. and says,

  474. the work of the Holy Spirit

  475. is like the wind.

  476. Even though you can't see it,

  477. you can feel its effects.

  478. It is real and powerful.

  479. You can feel the wind

  480. blowing in your face.

  481. You can feel it shaking

  482. the trees,

  483. which many of us did yesterday.

  484. Yesterday was a pretty windy day,

  485. right?

  486. You can,

  487. even though you might not

  488. be able to see it,

  489. you can feel its effects.

  490. It's real.

  491. It's powerful

  492. and it's mysterious.

  493. It's not something

  494. that we can control

  495. or even predict.

  496. So it is

  497. with the Holy Spirit.

  498. Even though we cannot see

  499. physically what God

  500. is doing in the heart

  501. of someone,

  502. it is nonetheless

  503. real and powerful

  504. and it's also not something

  505. that we can control.

  506. It's not something

  507. that we can manufacture.

  508. It's not something

  509. that we can predict.

  510. And that is because

  511. the new birth

  512. isn't something

  513. that we do.

  514. It is something

  515. that God does.

  516. It's something

  517. that God does.

  518. 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:3

  519. verse 3 says,

  520. Blessed be the God

  521. and Father

  522. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  523. According to His great mercy,

  524. He has caused us

  525. to be born again

  526. into a living hope.

  527. He has caused us

  528. to be born again.

  529. This is the work of God.

  530. It's not us.

  531. Just like the wind,

  532. the Holy Spirit

  533. brings about the new birth

  534. in ways that are

  535. often mysterious,

  536. often unpredictable,

  537. and often out of our control.

  538. Sometimes it can happen

  539. in a dramatic way,

  540. like if you think about

  541. St. Paul's conversion

  542. on the road to Damascus,

  543. right?

  544. Blinding light,

  545. a voice from heaven,

  546. dramatic experience,

  547. power, right?

  548. But other times,

  549. it can happen

  550. in more ordinary,

  551. subtle, mundane ways.

  552. For others,

  553. it's more like the story

  554. of C.S. Lewis.

  555. It's like somebody

  556. waking up slowly

  557. and eventually realizing

  558. that they're awake.

  559. This is the work

  560. of the Spirit.

  561. It's unpredictable.

  562. It's mysterious.

  563. We can't quite control it,

  564. but this is because

  565. it's the sovereign work

  566. of the Spirit.

  567. This is where we see

  568. that the new birth

  569. is not an experience

  570. we can control.

  571. It's not an experience

  572. that we can manufacture,

  573. but it is a sovereign work

  574. of the Holy Spirit.

  575. It's a sovereign work

  576. of the Holy Spirit.

  577. And rather than this being

  578. something that makes us cringe,

  579. this is actually something

  580. that should greatly

  581. and deeply encourage us.

  582. This should be something

  583. that should be

  584. incredibly encouraging.

  585. Over the years,

  586. I've actually had heard

  587. more than a few people

  588. express a mild,

  589. vague sense of shame

  590. that they do not have

  591. a more powerful testimony.

  592. They don't have

  593. a more powerful experience

  594. of coming to faith.

  595. It's as if having

  596. a more powerful story

  597. of the new birth

  598. would make

  599. their current experience

  600. of the Holy Spirit

  601. more real and powerful

  602. in their life.

  603. But for many people,

  604. many of us,

  605. God uses ordinary means

  606. like friendships

  607. and growing up

  608. in a Christian family

  609. to bring about

  610. the new birth

  611. into our lives.

  612. And this isn't something

  613. to be ashamed of.

  614. This isn't something

  615. to feel guilty about.

  616. This is something

  617. to be celebrated

  618. and rejoiced in.

  619. This is just as much

  620. of a testimony

  621. to the sovereign power

  622. of the Spirit

  623. to bring about

  624. the new birth

  625. just as a dramatic moment

  626. like Paul's conversion

  627. on the road to Damascus.

  628. We should rejoice

  629. in both dramatic

  630. and ordinary

  631. and mundane experiences

  632. of the new birth

  633. because the same

  634. sovereign Spirit

  635. is at work

  636. in both.

  637. It is His work,

  638. not ours.

  639. This should also bring

  640. us great encouragement

  641. as we think about

  642. friends and family

  643. and coworkers

  644. that we want to know Christ.

  645. Do we have the responsibility

  646. of sharing Christ with them?

  647. Yes, we have the responsibility

  648. to share our faith,

  649. to share the gospel with them,

  650. to pray for them,

  651. to ask them questions.

  652. But we don't have

  653. any of the pressure,

  654. we don't have any

  655. of the responsibility

  656. to see any results,

  657. to see them come to faith,

  658. to see them actually

  659. experience the new birth.

  660. That's not on us.

  661. That's the work

  662. of the Spirit.

  663. He is the one

  664. who brings about

  665. regeneration

  666. and new birth

  667. in the hearts

  668. of people.

  669. And so we can relax

  670. because it is

  671. His work

  672. that He does.

  673. Parents,

  674. this is also true

  675. for you

  676. as you think

  677. about your kids

  678. and as you

  679. hope and pray,

  680. as you think

  681. about wanting

  682. your kids

  683. to express

  684. faith in Christ

  685. someday.

  686. There may be

  687. an exact moment

  688. when this happens

  689. or there may not be.

  690. It may be more subtle

  691. and mundane

  692. and ordinary.

  693. It might be

  694. just what we pray

  695. every Sunday

  696. and what we prayed earlier

  697. that there would never

  698. be a day

  699. that they know

  700. apart from knowing Christ.

  701. But regardless,

  702. this is

  703. the new birth

  704. in your children

  705. is not something

  706. that you have to

  707. force to happen

  708. or control

  709. or create

  710. the perfect conditions

  711. for.

  712. And it's ultimately

  713. not something

  714. that you are

  715. responsible for

  716. as a parent

  717. because it is

  718. the sovereign work

  719. of the Holy Spirit

  720. who brings about

  721. the new birth,

  722. who regenerates hearts.

  723. So what we see

  724. is that the new birth

  725. and conversion

  726. aren't about getting

  727. more religion.

  728. It's about receiving

  729. a new nature.

  730. We also see

  731. that it's not

  732. an experience

  733. that we can control,

  734. but it's a sovereign

  735. work of the Holy Spirit.

  736. And so here's

  737. a third

  738. and final

  739. misconception

  740. that we often have

  741. about the new birth.

  742. A third

  743. and final misconception

  744. is that

  745. it's really just

  746. describing

  747. spiritual experience

  748. in general.

  749. It's describing

  750. a spiritual experience

  751. that happened

  752. in lots of other

  753. religions and faiths

  754. and other forms

  755. of spirituality.

  756. There's nothing

  757. unique about it.

  758. But as Jesus

  759. continues his

  760. conversation

  761. with Nicodemus,

  762. he recalls

  763. a story

  764. from Numbers

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  765. chapter 21

  766. that Laurel

  767. read earlier.

  768. And this is a bit

  769. of a bizarre story

  770. when you first read it.

  771. The Israelites

  772. were complaining

  773. to God

  774. as they do

  775. multiple times.

  776. They were complaining

  777. to Moses about God

  778. that he had brought

  779. them out into the wilderness

  780. only to die.

  781. That they were

  782. longing to go

  783. back to Egypt.

  784. And God

  785. judges them.

  786. He judges them

  787. for their sin

  788. of unbelief

  789. by sending

  790. venomous snakes.

  791. And these

  792. venomous snakes

  793. bite the people

  794. causing many

  795. of them to die.

  796. The people

  797. realize their sin.

  798. They cry out

  799. to God.

  800. They repent.

  801. They acknowledge

  802. they've sinned.

  803. God in his mercy

  804. provides a way out.

  805. And he tells

  806. Moses

  807. to create

  808. a bronze snake

  809. and put the

  810. bronze snake

  811. on a pole.

  812. And anyone

  813. who looks

  814. at the bronze snake,

  815. anyone who's

  816. been bitten

  817. can look

  818. at the bronze snake

  819. and live

  820. and be healed.

  821. That's a bizarre

  822. story, right?

  823. But the point

  824. of the story

  825. is this,

  826. that people

  827. who were dying

  828. because of their sin,

  829. people who were dying

  830. because of their sin

  831. were able

  832. to look

  833. to

  834. a symbol

  835. of judgment

  836. and death

  837. that was lifted up,

  838. the bronze serpent.

  839. They were able

  840. to look at a symbol

  841. of judgment

  842. and death

  843. and live

  844. and be healed

  845. and experience

  846. new life.

  847. And Jesus

  848. says to Nicodemus,

  849. this bizarre

  850. story

  851. in the Old Testament

  852. is about me.

  853. It's about me.

  854. Verse 14,

  855. as Moses

  856. lifted up

  857. the serpent

  858. in the wilderness,

  859. so must the Son

  860. of Man

  861. be lifted up

  862. that whoever

  863. believes in him

  864. may have

  865. eternal life.

  866. Nicodemus,

  867. just like the serpent,

  868. I too

  869. am going

  870. to be lifted up.

  871. Not on a pole,

  872. but on a cross.

  873. Not just as a symbol

  874. of judgment

  875. and death,

  876. but I'm going

  877. to be experiencing

  878. real judgment

  879. and real death

  880. so that whoever

  881. looks to me

  882. will experience

  883. new life.

  884. Now,

  885. why on earth

  886. would Jesus

  887. do this?

  888. Why would he

  889. be lifted up

  890. as a symbol

  891. of judgment

  892. and death?

  893. Well,

  894. he tells us,

  895. he tells Nicodemus

  896. in the next verse,

  897. and this is a familiar

  898. verse to many.

  899. In fact,

  900. it's maybe

  901. the most well-known

  902. verse in the Bible.

  903. John 3, 16.

  904. For God

  905. so loved

  906. the world

  907. that he gave

  908. his one and only

  909. son that whoever

  910. believes in him

  911. should not perish

  912. but have

  913. eternal life.

  914. he did it

  915. out of love.

  916. Perhaps you're

  917. here this morning

  918. and you,

  919. like Nicodemus,

  920. have been

  921. curious about

  922. Jesus,

  923. but maybe you

  924. have never

  925. actually received

  926. the new life

  927. that Jesus

  928. has come

  929. to bring.

  930. Maybe you've

  931. thought Jesus'

  932. teachings were

  933. interesting or true.

  934. Maybe you even

  935. believe that he's

  936. from God,

  937. but you have

  938. never actually

  939. received the

  940. light that he

  941. has come to

  942. bring you.

  943. Well,

  944. this shows

  945. you how you

  946. can,

  947. this shows us

  948. how you can

  949. receive the

  950. new birth.

  951. This shows us

  952. how you can

  953. receive the

  954. new life.

  955. On one hand,

  956. the message

  957. of Christianity

  958. is so simple

  959. that even

  960. a small child

  961. can understand

  962. it.

  963. On the other

  964. hand,

  965. the message

  966. of Christianity

  967. is so deep

  968. that it will

  969. take you

  970. a lifetime,

  971. even an

  972. eternity,

  973. to plumb

  974. the depths

  975. of its

  976. wisdom.

  977. And so,

  978. my friends

  979. in this room

  980. who are

  981. have lots

  982. of degrees

  983. and who

  984. have lots

  985. of education,

  986. who are

  987. highly educated,

  988. do not

  989. miss the

  990. crystal clear

  991. simplicity of

  992. the gospel

  993. that is here

  994. in this

  995. passage.

  996. Don't miss

  997. the crystal clear

  998. simplicity of

  999. what Jesus

  1000. came to do

  1001. and how we

  1002. receive what

  1003. he came to

  1004. do for us.

  1005. We are

  1006. spiritually dead

  1007. in our sins.

  1008. We are

  1009. headed towards

  1010. an eternity

  1011. of perishing

  1012. without God.

  1013. but out

  1014. of his

  1015. great love

  1016. for us,

  1017. because God

  1018. so loved

  1019. the world,

  1020. because he

  1021. so loved

  1022. you,

  1023. he came

  1024. and exchanged

  1025. places

  1026. for us,

  1027. with us,

  1028. by being

  1029. lifted up

  1030. on the

  1031. cross.

  1032. At the

  1033. cross,

  1034. Jesus

  1035. experienced

  1036. everything

  1037. that you

  1038. and I

  1039. deserved,

  1040. judgment

  1041. and death,

  1042. that we

  1043. could experience

  1044. everything

  1045. that he

  1046. deserves,

  1047. new life.

  1048. God's

  1049. judgment

  1050. so we

  1051. can receive

  1052. God's

  1053. acceptance.

  1054. He

  1055. received God's

  1056. wrath so we

  1057. can experience

  1058. God's

  1059. peace.

  1060. He received

  1061. God's absence

  1062. so that we

  1063. can receive

  1064. God's

  1065. presence,

  1066. and he

  1067. received

  1068. eternal

  1069. death so

  1070. that you

  1071. and I

  1072. can experience

  1073. eternal

  1074. life.

  1075. And all

  1076. you have

  1077. to do,

  1078. just like

  1079. the people

  1080. in Numbers

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  1081. chapter 21,

  1082. all you have

  1083. to do is

  1084. look to

  1085. him,

  1086. to believe

  1087. in him

  1088. and to trust

  1089. him.

  1090. And what

  1091. that means

  1092. is that when

  1093. you look

  1094. to the

  1095. cross,

  1096. you believe

  1097. and trust

  1098. that what

  1099. he did

  1100. there,

  1101. he did

  1102. for you.

  1103. He did

  1104. for you

  1105. out of his

  1106. great love

  1107. for you.

  1108. God so

  1109. loved the

  1110. world,

  1111. he so loved

  1112. you,

  1113. that he gave

  1114. his only

  1115. son for

  1116. you.

  1117. And when

  1118. we see

  1119. that,

  1120. when we

  1121. look to

  1122. that,

  1123. when we

  1124. trust in

  1125. that,

  1126. we are

  1127. not only

  1128. given new

  1129. life by

  1130. the Holy

  1131. Spirit,

  1132. but we are

  1133. brought into

  1134. loving union

  1135. with Christ.

  1136. In fact,

  1137. it is our

  1138. union with

  1139. Christ,

  1140. it is our

  1141. union with

  1142. Jesus that

  1143. brings about

  1144. the new

  1145. life given

  1146. to us by

  1147. the Spirit.

  1148. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1149. chapter 2,

  1150. this passage

  1151. that we read

  1152. earlier that

  1153. talks about

  1154. us being

  1155. dead and

  1156. our trespasses

  1157. and sins,

  1158. after it talks

  1159. about us being

  1160. spiritually dead,

  1161. says this in

  1162. the next

  1163. verse,

  1164. because of

  1165. his great

  1166. love for

  1167. us,

  1168. God,

  1169. who is

  1170. rich in

  1171. mercy,

  1172. made us

  1173. alive even

  1174. when we were

  1175. dead in our

  1176. transgressions,

  1177. and God

  1178. raised us up

  1179. with Christ

  1180. and seated

  1181. us with

  1182. him in

  1183. the heavenly

  1184. realms.

  1185. Made alive

  1186. together with

  1187. Christ,

  1188. seated with

  1189. him,

  1190. raised with

  1191. him.

  1192. It is

  1193. through our

  1194. union with

  1195. Christ that

  1196. we experience

  1197. the new

  1198. birth,

  1199. that we

  1200. experience new

  1201. life,

  1202. love.

  1203. And it

  1204. is through

  1205. our union

  1206. with Christ,

  1207. given to us

  1208. by the Holy

  1209. Spirit,

  1210. that we

  1211. experience God's

  1212. love.

  1213. And so this is

  1214. where we see

  1215. that the new

  1216. birth isn't just

  1217. about spiritual

  1218. experience in

  1219. general,

  1220. but it is about

  1221. eternal life

  1222. that brings us

  1223. into loving

  1224. union with

  1225. Jesus.

  1226. It's about

  1227. eternal life

  1228. through loving

  1229. union with

  1230. Christ,

  1231. and it is

  1232. wonderfully

  1233. and beautifully

  1234. Trinitarian.

  1235. It's the love

  1236. of God the

  1237. Father revealed

  1238. to us in

  1239. Christ the

  1240. Son,

  1241. given to

  1242. us,

  1243. applied to

  1244. us by the

  1245. Holy Spirit

  1246. and received

  1247. in faith.

  1248. And this

  1249. makes the

  1250. new birth

  1251. immensely

  1252. practical.

  1253. It shows us

  1254. how to receive

  1255. the new birth

  1256. if we're not

  1257. a Christian,

  1258. and it also

  1259. shows us how

  1260. the new birth

  1261. affects us

  1262. even if we've

  1263. been following

  1264. Jesus for a

  1265. long time,

  1266. even if we

  1267. came to faith

  1268. a long time

  1269. ago.

  1270. Because the

  1271. new birth

  1272. isn't just

  1273. a one-time

  1274. moment that

  1275. you use to

  1276. check your

  1277. get-to-heaven

  1278. card.

  1279. It isn't

  1280. isolated from

  1281. the rest of

  1282. your life.

  1283. It actually

  1284. is the very

  1285. operating system

  1286. that makes

  1287. your entire

  1288. Christian life

  1289. possible.

  1290. It is the

  1291. seed that

  1292. allows us to

  1293. grow up into

  1294. Christ-likeness.

  1295. It is the

  1296. seed that

  1297. allows us

  1298. to grow

  1299. as Christians.

  1300. Just as we

  1301. experience in

  1302. conversion,

  1303. we grow as

  1304. Christians by

  1305. receiving the

  1306. love of God

  1307. the Father

  1308. through union

  1309. with Jesus

  1310. and the power

  1311. of the Spirit.

  1312. The power of

  1313. the Spirit.

  1314. So to tie all

  1315. this together,

  1316. to tie all this

  1317. together,

  1318. conversion and

  1319. the new birth,

  1320. it's not about

  1321. getting more

  1322. religion.

  1323. It's about

  1324. receiving a new

  1325. nature.

  1326. it's not

  1327. something,

  1328. it's not an

  1329. experience that

  1330. we control or

  1331. manufacture,

  1332. but it's a

  1333. sovereign work of

  1334. the Holy Spirit.

  1335. And it's not

  1336. about spiritual

  1337. life or

  1338. spirituality in

  1339. general,

  1340. but eternal

  1341. life through

  1342. a loving union

  1343. with Christ

  1344. received by

  1345. faith.

  1346. Now,

  1347. whatever

  1348. happened to

  1349. Nicodemus?

  1350. John,

  1351. here in

  1352. John chapter

  1353. three,

  1354. actually just

  1355. moves on.

  1356. Like,

  1357. the conversation

  1358. just ends.

  1359. And then he

  1360. moves on to

  1361. the next thing.

  1362. So we actually

  1363. don't see

  1364. Nicodemus'

  1365. response.

  1366. We don't see

  1367. Nicodemus until

  1368. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  1369. 19.

  1370. And John

    John 19 chapter mention

  1371. chapter 19

  1372. tells us that

  1373. after Jesus

  1374. died,

  1375. that Joseph

  1376. of Arimathea

  1377. got permission

  1378. from Pilate

  1379. to receive

  1380. the body

  1381. of Jesus

  1382. after he

  1383. was crucified

  1384. and after

  1385. he died.

  1386. Joseph of

  1387. Arimathea

  1388. received the

  1389. body of

  1390. Jesus and

  1391. placed the

  1392. body of

  1393. Jesus buried

  1394. in his

  1395. personal tomb.

  1396. And who

  1397. would come

  1398. to the

  1399. burial but

  1400. Nicodemus?

  1401. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  1402. 19 says that

  1403. Nicodemus arrives

  1404. on the scene

  1405. at Jesus'

  1406. burial and

  1407. he brings

  1408. with him

  1409. 75 pounds

  1410. of burial

  1411. spices,

  1412. myrrh and

  1413. other spices.

  1414. 75 pounds.

  1415. This would

  1416. have been

  1417. incredibly

  1418. expensive.

  1419. This would

  1420. have been

  1421. incredibly

  1422. extravagant

  1423. for a

  1424. burial.

  1425. This would

  1426. have been

  1427. the only

  1428. thing that

  1429. would have

  1430. been done

  1431. for the

  1432. burial of

  1433. a king.

  1434. This would

  1435. be the sort

  1436. of thing

  1437. that would

  1438. have been

  1439. done not

  1440. just for

  1441. the burial

  1442. of any

  1443. one person,

  1444. it would

  1445. have been

  1446. an act

  1447. of worship.

  1448. Somewhere

  1449. between

  1450. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  1451. 3 and

  1452. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  1453. 19,

  1454. something changed

  1455. in how

  1456. Nicodemus

  1457. saw Jesus.

  1458. Somewhere

  1459. along the

  1460. way,

  1461. Nicodemus

  1462. realized that

  1463. Jesus wasn't

  1464. just a

  1465. teacher,

  1466. but that

  1467. he was a

  1468. king.

  1469. Not just

  1470. that he

  1471. was sent

  1472. from God,

  1473. but that

  1474. he was

  1475. God.

  1476. So when

  1477. did this

  1478. happen?

  1479. Well, we

  1480. can't know

  1481. for sure,

  1482. we can only

  1483. speculate,

  1484. but I

  1485. wonder if

  1486. it was

  1487. on that

  1488. Saturday

  1489. when Nicodemus

  1490. went out

  1491. to Golgotha

  1492. where Jesus

  1493. was being

  1494. crucified,

  1495. and I

  1496. wonder

  1497. if as

  1498. he saw

  1499. Jesus

  1500. being

  1501. crucified,

  1502. suffering

  1503. and dying,

  1504. I wonder

  1505. when he

  1506. saw Jesus

  1507. lifted up

  1508. and suspended

  1509. on the

  1510. cross,

  1511. I wonder

  1512. if Nicodemus

  1513. remembered

  1514. back to

  1515. his

  1516. conversation

  1517. at night

  1518. when he

  1519. told Nicodemus,

  1520. just like

  1521. Moses lifted

  1522. up the

  1523. bronze snake,

  1524. the Son of

  1525. Man must

  1526. be lifted

  1527. up.

  1528. And I

  1529. wonder if

  1530. he recalled

  1531. those words

  1532. and not

  1533. only looked

  1534. at Jesus,

  1535. but believed

  1536. in him for

  1537. eternal life.

  1538. Now,

  1539. that's just

  1540. me speculating,

  1541. we can't

  1542. know for

  1543. sure,

  1544. maybe this

  1545. change had

  1546. already

  1547. occurred

  1548. weeks or

  1549. months

  1550. earlier,

  1551. maybe like

  1552. C.S.

  1553. Lewis,

  1554. it happened

  1555. when Nicodemus

  1556. wasn't even

  1557. conscious that

  1558. it was

  1559. happening.

  1560. We can't

  1561. know for

  1562. sure,

  1563. in some

  1564. ways it

  1565. really doesn't

  1566. matter,

  1567. and in

  1568. many ways

  1569. that's not

  1570. the point.

  1571. The point

  1572. is that

  1573. at some

  1574. time,

  1575. Nicodemus

  1576. understood that

  1577. when Jesus

  1578. was lifted

  1579. up on the

  1580. cross,

  1581. that it

  1582. was for

  1583. him.

  1584. It was out

  1585. of his

  1586. great love

  1587. for him.

  1588. Jesus

  1589. was there

  1590. out of

  1591. his great

  1592. love for

  1593. Nicodemus.

  1594. And it

  1595. was that

  1596. love that

  1597. changed him.

  1598. It was that

  1599. love that

  1600. created a new

  1601. heart and a

  1602. new spirit.

  1603. And it was

  1604. that same

  1605. love that

  1606. changed C.S.

  1607. Lewis.

  1608. It was the

  1609. same love that

  1610. gave him a

  1611. new heart and

  1612. a new spirit

  1613. and a new

  1614. life.

  1615. And it is

  1616. the same

  1617. love for

  1618. us that

  1619. changes us,

  1620. that regenerates

  1621. our hearts and

  1622. gives us a

  1623. new spirit and

  1624. gives us new

  1625. life.

  1626. Let's pray

  1627. together.

  1628. Father in

  1629. heaven, thank

  1630. you that you

  1631. have revealed

  1632. your love in

  1633. Jesus Christ

  1634. on the cross

  1635. and you

  1636. allow us to

  1637. experience the

  1638. new birth by

  1639. giving us new

  1640. hearts.

  1641. Help us to

  1642. not miss the

  1643. simplicity of

  1644. the gospel

  1645. that you

  1646. so love the

  1647. world, that

  1648. you exchanged

  1649. places with us

  1650. on the cross,

  1651. that whoever

  1652. looks to you,

  1653. whoever believes

  1654. in you, shall

  1655. not perish but

  1656. have eternal

  1657. life.

  1658. Amen.
