  1. As we said at the beginning of this service, the Easter vigil was originally a preparation

  2. for baptism, an all-night vigil kept by candidates before they would be baptized at first light

  3. on Easter morning.

  4. And as part of that preparation, candidates would read passages like we're reading tonight.

  5. They would read passages like Daniel 3, the passage that we just heard read, very well

  6. done, by the way, as they prepared for their new life.

  7. Daniel chapter 3 is the story of three young Israelites who have been taken into captivity

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  8. with many of their people and forced to live in Babylon.

  9. But this does not mean that God has abandoned his people, as many thought had happened.

  10. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God reveals that he has actually sent his people into exile

  11. in Babylon to seek its welfare, to be in the city but not of the city, that God might bless

  12. the city through their presence there.

  13. And God has given the same mission to his people all around the world, to live like exiles

  14. in captivity, to be in the world but not of the world, to be an extension, a vehicle of

  15. God's blessing to the nations.

  16. And so this passage, as we look at it, shows us, for those of us who are Christians, three

  17. things about living this life faithfully.

  18. For those of us who are here who are not Christians, it helps us understand why the world needs to be rescued,

  19. why God needs to send his blessing out to the nations.

  20. The three things we'll see are this, the danger of captivity, the way to freedom,

  21. and the God of the furnace.

  22. Let's pray.

  23. Lord, we ask that as we have unfolded your story, as we have opened your word, that you would be true to your promise,

  24. to be the God who speaks through your word.

  25. This is not mere ink and paper.

  26. Lord, this is your voice that we seek to hear.

  27. And we pray that as we hear your voice, that we would come face to face with the living word, Jesus Christ.

  28. And it's in his name that we pray.

  29. Amen.

  30. The danger of captivity.

  31. The Babylonians had a very innovative approach to conquest.

  32. They would conquer a people with their military, and then they would take the best and the brightest of those people into Babylon,

  33. and there they would assimilate them into Babylonian culture.

  34. It was subjugation through assimilation.

  35. It was quite a brilliant tactic.

  36. But it makes one wonder, how do you bring many people from many different cultures and traditions and religions into your city,

  37. and then assimilate them?

  38. And here's where King Nebuchadnezzar's brilliance really shines,

  39. because he understands something about human nature that many of us don't.

  40. He understands this.

  41. He says,

  42. So Nebuchadnezzar sets up a great tower, a 90-foot golden idol,

  43. a representation of all the glory, all the values of Babylonian society,

  44. a monument to human greatness.

  45. And he tells the people,

  46. you can have your own religion in private.

  47. Believe whatever you want in your own home.

  48. But when you're in public,

  49. you must bow to this idol.

  50. When you hear the music,

  51. you will bow,

  52. and if you do not,

  53. you will be cast into a burning,

  54. fiery furnace.

  55. The spiritual conquest has begun.

  56. If you want to control people,

  57. you have to control what they worship.

  58. Because whatever we worship ultimately controls us.

  59. So he builds a statue,

  60. and he ascribes divine value to this statue.

  61. And this is how anything might become an idol in our lives.

  62. We take some created thing.

  63. It could be anything,

  64. such as an object,

  65. or another person,

  66. or a relationship,

  67. or an ideology.

  68. And we imbue it with divine significance.

  69. We set our whole heart on it.

  70. We say to this thing,

  71. or to this person,

  72. or to this ideology,

  73. my life's not worth living

  74. unless I have this thing.

  75. If I lose this thing,

  76. my life is no longer worth living.

  77. You set your whole heart on it.

  78. And it becomes more important to you

  79. than anything.

  80. Even God.

  81. We look at this society,

  82. and we can't imagine

  83. listening to music

  84. and bowing to a great golden statue.

  85. We say,

  86. I would never do such a foolish thing.

  87. Think about our lives here in D.C.

  88. Those of us who live in the metro D.C. area,

  89. we don't bow to a golden statue, do we?

  90. But many of us do bow to other idols.

  91. Perhaps the idol of achievement.

  92. We set our hearts on being respected.

  93. On being successful.

  94. So we begin to elevate our grades,

  95. and our college admissions,

  96. and our jobs,

  97. and our careers above everything else.

  98. We drive ourselves,

  99. and we drive our children to succeed.

  100. We're willing to sacrifice friendships.

  101. We're willing to sacrifice time

  102. with our friends,

  103. with our children.

  104. We're willing to sacrifice our own health.

  105. We're willing to work all the time

  106. through nights and weekends,

  107. which, by the way,

  108. is much easier to do

  109. now that many of us work from home.

  110. I saw a thread on Reddit

  111. a few years back

  112. about the best places

  113. in Washington, D.C.

  114. to cry.

  115. And it became wildly popular.

  116. Now, why would people

  117. want to swap secret places

  118. to cry

  119. in Washington, D.C.?

  120. It's because of the pressure.

  121. People say living here

  122. is like being in a pressure cooker.

  123. You're living in a meritocracy

  124. where you're constantly struggling

  125. to prove your worth.

  126. And so people need to know

  127. that if they

  128. feel the urge

  129. to run out of their office

  130. weeping,

  131. they can find a place

  132. where they won't be disturbed.

  133. Right?

  134. So for those of us

  135. who are Christians,

  136. we may be Christians

  137. in private.

  138. We may believe in

  139. and talk about

  140. and teach Sunday school classes

  141. on the value of Sabbath

  142. and the value of rest

  143. and a balanced life,

  144. the priority of friendship

  145. and family and community.

  146. But in public,

  147. we bow like everyone else.

  148. And there's no difference

  149. between our priorities

  150. or work habits

  151. and those around us.

  152. Or consider the example

  153. of politics.

  154. Many of us can tend

  155. to make politics

  156. more important

  157. than anything else.

  158. And that begins to define

  159. our view of other people.

  160. Surveys show that

  161. we on both sides of the aisle

  162. tend to view

  163. those on the other side

  164. of the aisle,

  165. not merely as people

  166. with whom we might

  167. disagree on policy,

  168. but as evil,

  169. as immoral,

  170. as unintelligent,

  171. as representing

  172. an existential threat

  173. to the future

  174. of our society.

  175. And again,

  176. for those of us

  177. who are Christians,

  178. we may be Christians

  179. in private.

  180. We may believe

  181. that we're all part

  182. of Christ's body,

  183. that we're all one

  184. in Him,

  185. but in public,

  186. we tend to bow.

  187. There's been a big

  188. reshuffling of Christians

  189. over the last three years

  190. who are changing churches,

  191. not for theological reasons,

  192. but for political reasons.

  193. Wanting to be in churches

  194. where their political views

  195. are going to be supported

  196. rather than critiqued.

  197. There are many Christians

  198. who have changed their church

  199. because of their politics.

  200. How many Christians

  201. have changed their politics

  202. because of their church?

  203. The point of these examples

  204. is this.

  205. Everybody worships something.

  206. Even if you consider yourself

  207. non-religious,

  208. and by the way,

  209. if you consider yourself

  210. non-religious

  211. and you're at a three-hour

  212. Easter vigil,

  213. I'm so delighted

  214. that you're here.

  215. And I would love

  216. to talk to you

  217. after the service

  218. and to know

  219. what got you to come.

  220. Did somebody trick you?

  221. But if you consider yourself

  222. to be non-religious,

  223. I guarantee you,

  224. with all due respect,

  225. you are still

  226. worshiping something.

  227. It could be achievement

  228. or politics.

  229. It could be affirmation.

  230. It could be security.

  231. It could be comfort.

  232. Whatever makes your life

  233. worth living,

  234. whatever you can't imagine

  235. living without,

  236. that is your idol.

  237. For those of us

  238. who are Christians,

  239. that doesn't make us

  240. immune to idols.

  241. When we bow

  242. to the same idols

  243. as everyone else,

  244. it means we are in

  245. spiritual captivity.

  246. And we don't have

  247. Nebuchadnezzar to contend with,

  248. but great politicians,

  249. great influencers,

  250. great leaders,

  251. great advertising companies

  252. know this spiritual truth.

  253. If you can control

  254. what people worship,

  255. you can control them.

  256. The real danger

  257. is not physical captivity.

  258. It is spiritual captivity.

  259. That's the danger of captivity.

  260. Now, what is the way to freedom?

  261. This brings us to the climax

  262. of the story.

  263. The music plays,

  264. but these three young men,

  265. Shadrach, Meshach,

  266. and Abednego,

  267. they refuse to bow.

  268. You need to understand,

  269. they were surrounded

  270. by Israelites,

  271. all prostrate,

  272. and they're standing tall.

  273. Some of their co-workers

  274. tell Nebuchadnezzar,

  275. who brings them up front

  276. of everyone,

  277. and he says,

  278. if you do not worship,

  279. you shall be immediately

  280. cast into a burning,

  281. fiery furnace.

  282. But look at what they say.

  283. Oh, Nebuchadnezzar,

  284. we have no need

  285. to answer you in this matter.

  286. If this be so,

  287. our God,

  288. whom we serve,

  289. is able to deliver us

  290. from the burning,

  291. fiery furnace,

  292. and he will deliver us

  293. out of your hand,

  294. O king.

  295. But if not,

  296. be it known to you,

  297. O king,

  298. that we will not serve

  299. your gods

  300. or worship the golden image

  301. that you have set up.

  302. Now, we know how the story goes.

  303. We know that when they're thrown

  304. into the furnace,

  305. God miraculously saves them,

  306. but they had no idea.

  307. They had no idea

  308. this was going to happen.

  309. This is the Holy Saturday moment

  310. of Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  311. And they're staring

  312. into the unknown,

  313. and they have no idea

  314. what's going to happen.

  315. But if not,

  316. signifies a single-minded

  317. devotion to God.

  318. We know God has the power

  319. to deliver us,

  320. and He might.

  321. But if not,

  322. we will serve Him

  323. and Him alone.

  324. The Reverend Dr. Martin

  325. Luther King Jr.'s sermon

  326. on this passage

  327. is by far

  328. one of my most favorite sermons

  329. he ever preached.

  330. And he talks in that sermon

  331. about the difference

  332. between an if faith

  333. and a though faith.

  334. And an if faith says,

  335. if God saves me

  336. from the furnace

  337. or helps me get this job

  338. or makes sure

  339. I have enough money

  340. or helps me feel fulfilled,

  341. then I will worship Him.

  342. It's faith that is contingent

  343. on God holding up

  344. His end of the bargain.

  345. It's transactional.

  346. A though faith says,

  347. though God may allow me

  348. to suffer,

  349. though God may refuse

  350. to answer my prayers

  351. the way I want,

  352. I will still worship Him

  353. and Him alone.

  354. That is a faith

  355. with no contingencies

  356. where we're worshiping God

  357. for God's sake alone.

  358. Now you say,

  359. what does this have to do

  360. with idolatry?

  361. Well, remember,

  362. Nebuchadnezzar allowed

  363. his people to worship

  364. their own God

  365. as long as they also

  366. worshiped his idol.

  367. That way he could still

  368. control them.

  369. And this is the real problem

  370. with an if faith.

  371. With an if faith,

  372. you're not actually

  373. worshiping and serving God.

  374. You are co-opting God

  375. in service to your idol.

  376. When you say,

  377. if God makes me successful,

  378. then I will worship Him,

  379. then the thing that you're

  380. worshiping is actually success.

  381. And you're trying to force God

  382. to serve your idol.

  383. And if your true idol

  384. is success,

  385. then success is your master.

  386. And guess what?

  387. Whoever holds the keys

  388. to your success

  389. is in control of you.

  390. So if your boss

  391. asks you to do

  392. unethical things

  393. in order to be successful,

  394. you'll do them.

  395. That's captivity.

  396. But when you are able

  397. to say,

  398. though God may allow me

  399. to fail,

  400. though I may miss

  401. the promotion,

  402. though I may lose my job,

  403. I will still serve Him

  404. and Him alone,

  405. then the idol of success

  406. no longer has any power

  407. over you.

  408. And you, my friend,

  409. are free.

  410. The only way to be free

  411. is to worship God alone.

  412. If we try to worship God

  413. plus anything else,

  414. we will be taken captive.

  415. So how do we get

  416. a though faith

  417. that leads us to freedom?

  418. Only in the God of the furnace.

  419. We think of this story

  420. as a story of God

  421. miraculously saving these men.

  422. But look what he does.

  423. He could have hurled

  424. a meteor down

  425. and destroyed Nebuchadnezzar

  426. and the idol

  427. and the furnace.

  428. But he does not prevent them

  429. from going in.

  430. He allows them

  431. to be thrown

  432. into the furnace.

  433. And yet,

  434. when Nebuchadnezzar

  435. looks in,

  436. to his astonishment,

  437. he sees four men

  438. walking around

  439. unharmed.

  440. The first three

  441. he recognizes

  442. is Shadrach, Meshach,

  443. and Abednego.

  444. But he is awestruck

  445. by the fourth man

  446. who looks like

  447. a son of the gods.

  448. This has such a profound

  449. impact on the king

  450. that at that moment

  451. and for a time,

  452. for a time

  453. in the story of Daniel,

  454. he's willing to worship

  455. and honor

  456. the God of Israel.

  457. Christians look at this story

  458. and recognize this

  459. as a foreshadowing

  460. of the coming

  461. of Jesus Christ.

  462. And what we recognize

  463. is that when Jesus

  464. died on the cross,

  465. he went into

  466. the ultimate

  467. furnace

  468. of God's wrath.

  469. But he went alone.

  470. And this begins

  471. to open our eyes

  472. to the way,

  473. the only way,

  474. that we might be able

  475. to have a though faith.

  476. It's in realizing

  477. that Jesus

  478. is the only one

  479. who's willing

  480. to go into

  481. the furnace

  482. for us.

  483. See,

  484. no idol

  485. would ever do

  486. that for you.

  487. Whatever other

  488. thing we worship

  489. gives us

  490. nothing in return.

  491. Never delivers

  492. on the promise

  493. it makes.

  494. but Jesus

  495. is willing

  496. to plunge

  497. into the furnace

  498. on our behalf.

  499. And because

  500. of the cross,

  501. Christians know

  502. that we have

  503. nothing to fear.

  504. Because if you are

  505. in Christ

  506. by faith,

  507. then you know

  508. the worst thing

  509. that could possibly

  510. happen to you

  511. has already happened.

  512. It will never

  513. happen to you.

  514. And because

  515. Jesus went

  516. into that

  517. furnace

  518. of sin

  519. and death

  520. and then

  521. rose again,

  522. he transformed

  523. death

  524. into a

  525. mere doorway.

  526. See,

  527. eventually

  528. Shadrach,

  529. Meshach,

  530. and Abednego

  531. died.

  532. They were

  533. preserved

  534. this time,

  535. but eventually

  536. they died.

  537. And one day

  538. we will all

  539. die.

  540. God does

  541. not promise.

  542. He never

  543. promises to

  544. save us

  545. from death.

  546. God promises

  547. to save us

  548. through death.

  549. The furnace

  550. is really

  551. a metaphor

  552. for the

  553. suffering

  554. that Christians

  555. face

  556. throughout

  557. our lives.

  558. You know,

  559. we read

  560. this passage

  561. and we wonder,

  562. will I ever

  563. have to go

  564. into the

  565. furnace?

  566. Will I

  567. ever be

  568. plunged

  569. into the

  570. furnace?

  571. not if

  572. you have

  573. an if

  574. faith.

  575. With an

  576. if faith

  577. you have

  578. a shot

  579. at living

  580. a long

  581. and reasonably

  582. pain-free

  583. life.

  584. With an

  585. if faith

  586. you have

  587. a shot

  588. at being

  589. relatively

  590. reasonably

  591. comfortable.

  592. With an

  593. if faith

  594. you have

  595. a shot

  596. at fitting

  597. in,

  598. at being

  599. well-liked,

  600. at being

  601. esteemed

  602. even.

  603. With an

  604. if faith

  605. you'll have

  606. a religion

  607. that is a

  608. source of

  609. encouragement

  610. to you

  611. when you're

  612. feeling down,

  613. that gives

  614. you a sense

  615. of meaning

  616. and direction

  617. that provides

  618. some structure

  619. for your

  620. children

  621. and a

  622. source of

  623. friendship

  624. for you.

  625. But someone

  626. else is calling

  627. the shots

  628. in your life.

  629. And you

  630. will never

  631. really experience

  632. closeness

  633. with Jesus

  634. because Jesus

  635. is in the

  636. furnace.

  637. And you

  638. will live

  639. your whole

  640. life standing

  641. on the

  642. outside

  643. looking in.

  644. If you

  645. want to be

  646. free

  647. and if you

  648. want to be

  649. with Jesus

  650. you have

  651. to go

  652. into the

  653. furnace.

  654. And that

  655. means following

  656. Jesus no

  657. matter what

  658. it might

  659. cost you.

  660. And that

  661. means a

  662. hard life

  663. where you

  664. most certainly

  665. will suffer.

  666. But in

  667. that furnace

  668. you will

  669. never be

  670. alone.

  671. because Jesus

  672. Christ is

  673. already there

  674. and he

  675. will always

  676. be there

  677. with you

  678. until he

  679. leads you

  680. out the

  681. other side.

  682. And because

  683. of the cross

  684. you know

  685. you have

  686. nothing to

  687. fear.

  688. See for

  689. those early

  690. Christians

  691. in those

  692. early Easter

  693. vigils as

  694. they prepared

  695. for their

  696. own baptisms

  697. they were

  698. clear on

  699. the meaning

  700. of what

  701. they were

  702. about to

  703. do.

  704. Baptism

  705. my friends

  706. is a

  707. death.

  708. But it

  709. is a

  710. death that

  711. leads to

  712. new life.

  713. That's

  714. why the

  715. early

  716. baptistries

  717. looked like

  718. mausoleums.

  719. They looked

  720. like tombs.

  721. That was

  722. intentional.

  723. You're going

  724. to die a

  725. death and

  726. then emerge

  727. into new

  728. life.

  729. A life

  730. that is

  731. free.

  732. And a

  733. life that

  734. is fireproof.

  735. A life

  736. that no

  737. amount of

  738. suffering can

  739. ever diminish.

  740. Because it

  741. will be a

  742. life that

  743. will go on

  744. into glory

  745. in eternity.

  746. Let's

  747. pray.

  748. Lord, we

  749. thank you for

  750. your word.

  751. We thank you

  752. that you went

  753. into the

  754. furnace.

  755. We thank you

  756. for the

  757. example of

  758. these

  759. exiles

  760. who in

  761. their holy

  762. Saturday

  763. staring into

  764. those flames.

  765. Not knowing

  766. what would

  767. come.

  768. Nevertheless

  769. trusted you.

  770. And we

  771. pray that as

  772. we sit here

  773. in our

  774. holy

  775. Saturday

  776. staring into

  777. the emptiness

  778. of the

  779. tomb.

  780. Wondering

  781. what we

  782. might find

  783. on the

  784. other side.

  785. I pray

  786. that you

  787. would give

  788. us the

  789. same

  790. reassurance.

  791. I pray

  792. that you

  793. would galvanize

  794. us and

  795. strengthen

  796. us to

  797. have a

  798. single-minded

  799. devotion to

  800. you,

  801. knowing that

  802. you already

  803. have a

  804. single-minded

  805. devotion to

  806. us.

  807. And we

  808. pray this

  809. in your

  810. holy name.

  811. Amen.
