  1. It's commonly thought, and certainly in the last 50 years, a lot of skeptics and critics of the Christian faith would have said that the world is becoming less and less religious.

  2. As more people modernize and gain technology and advancement, that we would put away myths and superstitions.

  3. But many scholars and folks who study this show us that the data says quite the opposite.

  4. The world is rapidly becoming more religious.

  5. Ecclesiastes 3.11 says that God has set in our hearts eternity.

  6. He's designed all of us with this longing and this desire for us to encounter, to experience the divine.

  7. However we define that, we have so much in this nation.

  8. We are so powerful, so advanced, yet we're so bored and so empty and so hungry and so thirsty.

  9. For the Christian, we teach and believe that this longing is ultimately and fully found in the person of Jesus Christ.

  10. I love the author Pat Conroy, who wrote The Great Santini.

  11. He once wrote,

  12. I could not quiet that pearly ache in my heart that I diagnosed as the cry of home.

  13. I'm 53 years old.

  14. I've lived in nine homes.

  15. And every time I drive up the driveway of my parents' house, I feel like I'm home again.

  16. But I know that it's ultimately not the home that I long for.

  17. Don't we all want to find home?

  18. I thought it was interesting.

  19. I walked in and saw the sign out there that said home.

  20. We're all looking for community, for friendships, for relationships, for family.

  21. This eternal longing is a longing that God has placed in our hearts to come home to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  22. So if the world is becoming more and more religious, and people are more hungry and thirsty for home,

  23. then I commend to you that the answer will be given on Pentecost Sunday that the Lord has sent to us his spirit.

  24. And I'm supposed to do this in about 17 minutes.

  25. So buckle up.

  26. I want to show you in just a few brief moments the beauty of Pentecost,

  27. the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing unity,

  28. and the great telos of God's plan,

  29. every tribe, tongue, people, and nation.

  30. So first, the amazing beauty and the timing,

  31. the unique timing of this unique day of Pentecost in human history.

  32. In the Old Testament, as Tommy mentioned from the outset,

  33. there's this theme.

  34. It's latent.

  35. It's nascent.

  36. Running through the Old Testament scriptures

  37. that God will be our God,

  38. and we will be his people,

  39. and he will send to us the promise of his spirit being poured out.

  40. We heard in the opening liturgy

  41. the renewal of this promise through the prophet Joel

  42. that God will send his spirit upon his people,

  43. and young men and young women shall dream dreams.

  44. And if you know the passage of dry bones from Ezekiel,

  45. you see this promise of the renewing of God's spirit,

  46. and at the end of it, Ezekiel writes about God,

  47. my dwelling place is with them.

  48. I will be their God,

  49. and they will be my people.

  50. Then the nations will know that I, the Lord,

  51. make Israel holy

  52. when my sanctuary is among them forever.

  53. This is the great promise that we see coming

  54. through all of scripture,

  55. that God will be with his people.

  56. Think about this.

  57. What has God promised you in this life?

  58. He's not promised you that all will go well with you in this world,

  59. that your dreams will come true,

  60. that the answers and longings of your hearts

  61. will be met in the things and the events

  62. and the circumstances of this world.

  63. He has promised you this.

  64. I will be with you.

  65. And the way that he ensures you know this promise

  66. is that he gives you his spirit.

  67. So there's this festival in Israel,

  68. this festival called the Festival of Weeks,

  69. and every year people would gather in Jerusalem

  70. 50 days after the Passover Sunday.

  71. That's the word Pentecost in Greek, 50.

  72. So they would gather and they would bring sacrifices of new wheat,

  73. new crops that have come up in the spring season

  74. as a celebration that it is God who provides for them.

  75. And this agricultural celebration of new wheat

  76. was symbolizing it is God who brings newness of life

  77. to his people.

  78. And it was also tied to Moses giving the law on Mount Sinai.

  79. So year after year and season after season

  80. for hundreds if not thousands of years,

  81. the people of Israel gathered together in Jerusalem

  82. with this festival,

  83. celebrating and being reminded of the newness of life,

  84. the promises of God.

  85. But at this festival, uniquely,

  86. people had for some reason,

  87. in God's providence, come from all over.

  88. So who is here?

  89. We heard a list that Aaron read for us.

  90. Scholars and commentators have said about this list.

  91. It represents the list of the known world nations.

  92. So all the nations are here in Jerusalem.

  93. We're representatives from them.

  94. And Luke, the writer of Acts,

  95. says that there's converts and there's God-fears.

  96. Something very special and electric

  97. is happening in the city of Jerusalem this day.

  98. Back to the promise.

  99. God would pour out his spirit upon all flesh.

  100. Meaning we could know him personally

  101. and intimately and relationally.

  102. A relationship with God was no longer just speculation

  103. or the activities of our mind,

  104. but a reality of our heart.

  105. It was personal.

  106. So this year, this particular year in the history of Israel,

  107. this particular time and celebration of the newness of life

  108. and the first fruits

  109. has now become the stage for the most powerful event

  110. in human history,

  111. the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

  112. Some say this is the birth of the church.

  113. Second point.

  114. Jesus had told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem.

  115. Acts 1.8 says, he says to them,

  116. the Holy Spirit will come upon you

  117. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  118. in Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  119. So the 120-ish disciples waited

  120. and they're waiting and they're waiting on the Holy Spirit.

  121. And at the Festival of Weeks celebration,

  122. this day we now call Pentecost,

  123. God poured out his spirit on the disciples.

  124. As the writer says,

  125. when the day of Pentecost came,

  126. they were together in one place.

  127. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind

  128. came from heaven

  129. and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

  130. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire

  131. that separated and came to rest on them.

  132. And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

  133. and began to speak in other tongues

  134. as the Spirit enabled them.

  135. Before our theological and denominational minds

  136. get tied up in these symbols

  137. and these words and these concepts,

  138. let's just simply see the work of the Holy Spirit.

  139. Jesus says,

  140. if you love me, you'll keep my commands

  141. and I will ask the Father

  142. and he will give you another advocate to help you

  143. and be with you forever.

  144. The Spirit of Truth.

  145. He says further down,

  146. I will not leave you as orphans.

  147. I will come to you.

  148. This is the fulfilling of the promise of God

  149. throughout scriptures.

  150. And the Christian life that we teach

  151. and that we strive to live

  152. is simply a life trusting

  153. and walking in the power of the Spirit.

  154. We can often think that the Christian life

  155. is lived by just what I do,

  156. but it's a life lived in trust

  157. and surrender to God.

  158. On the contrary,

  159. Jesus sends his Spirit to dwell in us,

  160. not just by what we do,

  161. but he sends his Spirit to us

  162. to assure us that we are not alone,

  163. to remind us that we are coming home.

  164. You know, I think about all of the power

  165. that we possess.

  166. My cell phone has more information

  167. within a click of a button

  168. than the whole library of ancient Alexandria.

  169. And yet we are the most disconnected people,

  170. the loneliest people.

  171. I hear it everywhere I go.

  172. People say,

  173. I'm looking for community.

  174. We had the Comfort Man share yesterday,

  175. and a number of them remarked

  176. one of the reasons why they ended up here at Advent

  177. is they found a home.

  178. They found community.

  179. If you're a guest today,

  180. we pray that you'll come back

  181. and find that kind of community.

  182. The Father sends us his Spirit

  183. so we are not alone in this life.

  184. You are not an orphan.

  185. Yesterday, Bayou shared with us

  186. some of her story,

  187. and something you said really stuck with me.

  188. Of all the things that you have gone through

  189. and the things that we have gone through

  190. in this life,

  191. we are reminded that Jesus was with us

  192. through them all.

  193. That is the work of the Spirit

  194. assuring you,

  195. you are not alone in this life.

  196. Psalm 68.6 says that

  197. God sets the lonely in family.

  198. Romans 8 says

  199. that if the Spirit of Him

  200. who raised Jesus from the dead

  201. is living in you,

  202. He who raised Christ from the dead

  203. will also give life to your mortal bodies

  204. because of His Spirit

  205. who lives in you.

  206. He continues,

  207. for those who are led by the Spirit

  208. are children of God,

  209. not orphans.

  210. The Spirit you receive

  211. does not make you slaves

  212. so that you live in fear.

  213. Rather,

  214. the Spirit that you have received

  215. brought about your adoption

  216. to sonship.

  217. And so by Him we cry,

  218. Abba,

  219. Father.

  220. The Spirit Himself

  221. testifies with our spirit

  222. that we are God's children.

  223. I'm not finished in Romans.

  224. Listen,

  225. He says that a little bit further down

  226. in the same way.

  227. The Spirit helps us

  228. in our weakness.

  229. We do not know

  230. what we ought to pray for,

  231. but the Spirit Himself

  232. intercedes for us

  233. through wordless groans.

  234. And He who searches our hearts

  235. knows the mind of the Spirit

  236. because the Spirit intercedes

  237. for God's people

  238. in accordance with the will of God.

  239. And probably the most famous verse of Romans,

  240. and we know

  241. that in all things

  242. God works for the good

  243. of those who love Him,

  244. who have been called

  245. according to His purpose.

  246. The hardest thing for me

  247. to believe

  248. in my 53 years of life

  249. is not,

  250. is there a God?

  251. But is there a God

  252. who is good

  253. and really working

  254. through the circumstances

  255. of this world

  256. when I see the troubling things

  257. that happen,

  258. troubling things that happen

  259. to us,

  260. to me,

  261. to believe that God

  262. is actually at work

  263. in all of these things,

  264. takes a trust

  265. in the Holy Spirit.

  266. You're not alone.

  267. The Spirit is poured out

  268. so everyone can be filled.

  269. And just to show off,

  270. not because I'm a Greek scholar,

  271. but one of the confirmands is,

  272. the word filled

  273. means present,

  274. imperative,

  275. passive,

  276. and plural.

  277. The Holy Spirit

  278. is continually

  279. or repeatedly

  280. filling us.

  281. We leak.

  282. We need the Spirit.

  283. It is imperative.

  284. We are to be filled.

  285. The Apostle Paul says,

  286. don't get filled up on wine

  287. or any other thing

  288. that you want to substitute,

  289. but instead be filled

  290. by the Spirit.

  291. It's passive.

  292. I don't make the Spirit

  293. fill me.

  294. I surrender

  295. and say,

  296. Holy Spirit,

  297. come

  298. and have your way

  299. with me.

  300. A very dangerous prayer.

  301. Lord,

  302. have your way

  303. with me.

  304. And lastly,

  305. it's plural.

  306. It's not just for me.

  307. It's not just for

  308. super people

  309. or leaders.

  310. It is the filling

  311. of the Spirit

  312. for all

  313. of God's people.

  314. So God

  315. pours out

  316. His Spirit

  317. on disciples

  318. and He pours out

  319. His Spirit

  320. on people

  321. from all over

  322. the known world

  323. at Pentecost.

  324. But what else happens?

  325. Let's look at Acts chapter 8

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  326. for just a second.

  327. Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  328. those who had been scattered

  329. preached the Word

  330. everywhere they went.

  331. Verse 5,

  332. Philip went down

  333. to a city in Samaria

  334. and He proclaimed

  335. and he proclaimed

  336. the Messiah there.

  337. When the crowds

  338. heard Philip

  339. and saw the signs

  340. he performed,

  341. they paid close attention

  342. to what he said

  343. for with shrieks

  344. impure spirits

  345. came out of many

  346. and many who were paralyzed

  347. or lame

  348. were healed.

  349. So there was great joy

  350. in that city.

  351. Jump down

  352. to verse 14.

  353. When the apostles

  354. in Jerusalem

  355. heard that Samaria

  356. had accepted

  357. the Word of God,

  358. they sent Peter

  359. and John

  360. to Samaria.

  361. and when they arrived,

  362. they prayed

  363. for the new believers

  364. that they might receive

  365. the Holy Spirit

  366. because the Holy Spirit

  367. had not yet come

  368. on any of them.

  369. They had simply

  370. been baptized

  371. in the name

  372. of the Lord.

  373. Then Peter

  374. and John

  375. placed their hands

  376. on them

  377. and they received

  378. the Holy Spirit.

  379. Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  380. Peter began to speak.

  381. He's with Cornelia

  382. and he said,

  383. I now realize

  384. how true it is

  385. that God does not

  386. show favoritism

  387. but accepts

  388. from every nation

  389. the one who fears him

  390. and does what is right.

  391. You know the message

  392. God sent

  393. to the people of Israel

  394. announcing the good news

  395. of peace

  396. through Jesus Christ

  397. who is Lord of all.

  398. You know what has happened

  399. throughout the province

  400. of Judea

  401. beginning in Galilee

  402. after the baptism

  403. that John preached.

  404. How God anointed

  405. Jesus of Nazareth

  406. with the Holy Spirit

  407. and power

  408. and how he went around

  409. doing good

  410. and healing

  411. all who were under

  412. the power

  413. of the devil

  414. because God was with him.

  415. Jump down a little bit.

  416. While Peter

  417. was still speaking

  418. these words

  419. the Holy Spirit

  420. came on all

  421. who heard the message.

  422. The circumcised believers

  423. who had come with Peter

  424. were astonished

  425. that the gift

  426. of the Holy Spirit

  427. had been poured out

  428. even on the Gentiles

  429. for they heard them

  430. speaking in tongues

  431. and praising God.

  432. See what's happening

  433. in the book of Acts.

  434. The disciples in Jerusalem

  435. the disciples in Samaria

  436. the Gentiles

  437. jumped to Acts 19.

  438. While Apollos

  439. was in Corinth

  440. Paul took the road

  441. through the interior

  442. and arrived at Ephesus.

  443. There he found

  444. some disciples

  445. and he asked them

  446. did you receive

  447. the Holy Spirit

  448. when you believed?

  449. And they answered

  450. no we've not even heard

  451. that there's a Holy Spirit.

  452. That's most of the church

  453. it seems like some days.

  454. So Paul asked

  455. then what baptism

  456. did you receive?

  457. John's baptism

  458. they replied.

  459. Paul said

  460. John's baptism

  461. was a baptism

  462. of repentance.

  463. He told the people

  464. to believe

  465. in the one

  466. coming after him

  467. that is in Jesus.

  468. On hearing this

  469. they were baptized

  470. in the name

  471. of the Lord Jesus

  472. when Paul placed

  473. his hands on them

  474. the Holy Spirit

  475. came on them

  476. and they spoke

  477. in tongues

  478. and they prophesied

  479. there were about

  480. twelve men

  481. in all.

  482. What is happening

  483. is that God

  484. was making

  485. his promise

  486. come true

  487. through belief

  488. and the filling

  489. of the Spirit.

  490. The book of Acts

  491. gives testimony

  492. that there is this

  493. one holy Catholic

  494. and apostolic church

  495. and faith

  496. and those

  497. who believed

  498. became witnesses

  499. in Jerusalem

  500. Judea

  501. Samaria

  502. and to the ends

  503. of the earth.

  504. This is the promise

  505. of God

  506. through the scriptures

  507. and you

  508. friends

  509. by faith

  510. are included

  511. in that family.

  512. Think of this

  513. staggering fact

  514. with me

  515. for just a moment.

  516. On Pentecost

  517. there were about

  518. 120 people

  519. waiting on the Spirit.

  520. That was

  521. 2,000 years ago.

  522. Today

  523. there are more

  524. than 2.5 billion

  525. men,

  526. women,

  527. and children

  528. around the world

  529. identifying

  530. in some way

  531. with the person

  532. of Jesus.

  533. Feng Gang Wong

  534. who studies

  535. Christianity

  536. in China

  537. says,

  538. in China

  539. by the year

  540. 2060

  541. the nation

  542. of China

  543. will be

  544. a majority

  545. Christian nation

  546. and the largest

  547. nation

  548. with Christians

  549. in the world.

  550. God continues

  551. to pour out

  552. his Holy Spirit.

  553. He is making us

  554. witnesses

  555. to the ends

  556. of the earth.

  557. There are

  558. 3 billion people

  559. alive

  560. who do not know

  561. another living

  562. breathing Christian

  563. in this world.

  564. Who will go

  565. and preach

  566. to them

  567. the good news?

  568. My last point

  569. is this,

  570. the effect

  571. of Pentecost

  572. is that

  573. God is building

  574. a people

  575. for himself

  576. as he's promised

  577. through the scriptures

  578. from every tribe,

  579. tongue,

  580. people,

  581. and nation.

  582. God is building

  583. his people.

  584. This is the impact

  585. and the effect

  586. of Pentecost.

  587. What happened

  588. 2,000 years ago

  589. is staggeringly

  590. effective

  591. even today.

  592. In Genesis

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  593. chapter 11

  594. there's this

  595. fantastic story

  596. about people

  597. then who wanted

  598. to make themselves

  599. great,

  600. their name great

  601. and they built

  602. a ziggurat,

  603. a tower

  604. to ascend

  605. on high

  606. and God

  607. scattered them

  608. and confused

  609. them with languages

  610. that divided

  611. and separated

  612. them.

  613. but here

  614. at Pentecost

  615. what's happening

  616. is God

  617. is reversing

  618. Babel.

  619. The world

  620. is present

  621. at Pentecost.

  622. This is why

  623. the world history

  624. is one story

  625. after another

  626. of racial

  627. hatred

  628. and enmity.

  629. No people

  630. on earth

  631. have clean hands

  632. on this.

  633. On Pentecost

  634. day,

  635. this is God's

  636. answer to the

  637. problem of enmity

  638. between the races

  639. and the nations.

  640. The message

  641. of Jesus

  642. makes a new

  643. people,

  644. one family.

  645. Tongues

  646. even meant

  647. everyone at that

  648. moment could

  649. understand.

  650. A few years ago

  651. at Church of the

  652. Redeemer in

  653. Greensboro,

  654. we were reading

  655. the Acts 2

  656. passage and I

  657. kind of slipped

  658. a surprise on

  659. people.

  660. After about

  661. the first two

  662. verses,

  663. someone stood

  664. up in the

  665. congregation

  666. and they

  667. started reading

  668. aloud in

  669. German.

  670. And another

  671. person about

  672. three or four

  673. verses later

  674. stood up and

  675. started reading

  676. in Swahili

  677. and another

  678. one in Spanish

  679. and another

  680. one in Arabic

  681. and this lady

  682. who was visiting,

  683. she was visiting

  684. our church

  685. first time ever.

  686. She got up

  687. from her seat

  688. in the back

  689. and walked up

  690. to me and she

  691. said,

  692. they're speaking

  693. in tongues.

  694. You have to

  695. get an interpreter

  696. and make them

  697. stop.

  698. And I said,

  699. the interpreter's

  700. reading in English.

  701. And she went,

  702. oh.

  703. And she

  704. understood.

  705. That's the

  706. moment that

  707. God made

  708. clear to

  709. every nation

  710. his gospel.

  711. Seven times in

  712. the book of

  713. Revelation,

  714. the phrase,

  715. every tribe,

  716. tongue,

  717. people,

  718. and nation

  719. appears.

  720. Seven times.

  721. Why so much?

  722. It's as if

  723. at the end

  724. of the book

  725. God is saying,

  726. I want you

  727. to understand

  728. what I'm up

  729. to in the

  730. world and

  731. with people.

  732. Every tribe,

  733. Fule,

  734. every kin,

  735. every clan,

  736. every tongue,

  737. glossolalia,

  738. every language,

  739. every people,

  740. Laos,

  741. every living

  742. place where

  743. people exist,

  744. whether it's

  745. a yurt in

  746. Mongolia

  747. or a high

  748. rise here

  749. in D.C.

  750. And ethnos,

  751. every race

  752. coming together

  753. as one

  754. people,

  755. one family,

  756. no more

  757. enmity.

  758. Through the

  759. spirit,

  760. God is

  761. reversing

  762. Babel

  763. and making

  764. one big

  765. beautiful

  766. family.

  767. You know,

  768. we talked

  769. today about

  770. the goal

  771. of diversity,

  772. but diversity

  773. is too low

  774. a goal.

  775. God is

  776. interested

  777. and committed

  778. to a

  779. family.

  780. Psalm 133,

  781. how blessed

  782. it is

  783. when brothers

  784. and sisters

  785. dwell in

  786. unity.

  787. God is

  788. making a

  789. family through

  790. his spirit

  791. of people

  792. who love

  793. him and

  794. will be

  795. loved by

  796. him,

  797. and he's

  798. doing that

  799. as we

  800. become

  801. witnesses

  802. of his

  803. gospel.

  804. Let me

  805. close with

  806. this thought

  807. to you,

  808. Church of

  809. the Advent.

  810. Don't be

  811. content to

  812. find your

  813. space

  814. and have

  815. a place,

  816. although it

  817. will be

  818. amazing.

  819. But see

  820. this church,

  821. this family,

  822. for every

  823. tribe,

  824. every tongue,

  825. every people

  826. and every

  827. nation,

  828. believing in

  829. Jesus,

  830. filled with

  831. his spirit

  832. to worship

  833. and to go

  834. tell their

  835. worlds

  836. and their

  837. neighbors

  838. where to

  839. find

  840. home.

  841. Would you

  842. pray with me?

  843. I invite

  844. you just

  845. silently to

  846. think and

  847. consider the

  848. idea of

  849. God filling

  850. you with

  851. his spirit.

  852. And I

  853. encourage you

  854. just for a

  855. moment,

  856. in your

  857. heart or

  858. even with

  859. your hands

  860. physically,

  861. just to

  862. open them

  863. and say,

  864. come,

  865. Holy Spirit,

  866. and fill

  867. me today.

  868. We thank

  869. you, Lord,

  870. for the

  871. promise of

  872. your spirit

  873. that you

  874. give generously

  875. and graciously

  876. to all who

  877. believe.

  878. So fill

  879. us that

  880. we may be

  881. witnesses of

  882. you in

  883. our day

  884. and in

  885. this time.

  886. And we

  887. thank you

  888. for the

  889. power of

  890. your Holy

  891. Spirit.

  892. may you

  893. receive

  894. honor and

  895. glory and

  896. blessing from

  897. our lives.

  898. And we pray

  899. this in

  900. Jesus' name.

  901. Amen.

  902. .

  903. .

  904. .

  905. .

  906. .

  907. .
