  1. So today, as we are following the lectionary readings, we come to these passages, and we

  2. see that we're going to be dealing with the topic of money, and specifically tithing and

  3. generosity.

  4. And I love when we come to these places in the lectionary, because as I'm looking at

  5. it, I'm thinking in particular, we're going to be focusing on Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  6. And these are passages that if they didn't come up in the lectionary, we could probably

  7. go years and years and years without ever preaching on them.

  8. And the reason is that most people don't really like to talk about the topic of money.

  9. And a lot of preachers, surprisingly, don't particularly look forward to the prospect

  10. of preaching about money, because we know that it's uncomfortable for all of us.

  11. And, you know, people say, well, you know, I'm uncomfortable just because it's getting

  12. too personal.

  13. You know, it's just getting too personal.

  14. Money is a very personal thing.

  15. Funny is I've thought about that.

  16. You know, a few years ago, I preached a sermon series on the Song of Songs.

  17. It was all about sexuality and intimacy.

  18. The place was packed.

  19. Packed.

  20. Attendance just spiked.

  21. And I don't know if you've ever read Song of Songs.

  22. But it doesn't get much more personal than the Song of Songs.

  23. I mean, especially if you understand the anatomical references that are being made.

  24. It's a highly, highly personal text.

  25. And so, I actually don't think that that is the reason that we are uncomfortable talking

  26. about the topic of money.

  27. I think the topic is disturbing to us because it's not really about the money.

  28. When we talk about money, we're not really talking about money.

  29. And generosity is not really a money issue.

  30. It's a heart issue.

  31. If you want to know the state of your heart, the best way to do that is to look at your

  32. spending habits.

  33. In other words, follow the money.

  34. Follow the money, and they will lead you to what's really going on.

  35. It will lead you to the truth about yourself.

  36. And this is probably why, if we look at the Gospels, Jesus talked about the topic of money

  37. more than almost any other topic in Scripture.

  38. So, this morning, we're going to be looking at this primarily in Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  39. And we're going to see what's going on with these people, and we're going to ask what the

  40. parallels are for us, and we're going to see three questions that we are going to try to answer.

  41. First of all, what's the problem?

  42. Second of all, how do we know?

  43. And third, what can we do about it?

  44. So, what's the problem?

  45. How do we know?

  46. And then what can we do about it?

  47. Let's pray.

  48. Lord, we thank You for Your Word, and we thank You that it always goes out and accomplishes

  49. what You desire for it to accomplish, Lord.

  50. And we pray that You would open us to the power of Your Word this morning, that we would

  51. be receptive to what You have to say for all of us.

  52. And we pray that this would lead to our ability to glorify You and to glorify Your name, not only

  53. among ourselves, but in this city.

  54. Lord, that we would lift Your name above every other name.

  55. We pray this in Your Son's holy name.

  56. Amen.

  57. So, first of all, what's the problem that we see happening in Malachi?

  58. It says in verse 7, from the days of Your fathers, You have turned aside from My statutes and

  59. have not kept them.

  60. Return to Me, and I will return to You, says the Lord of hosts.

  61. But You say, how shall we return?

  62. So, what's going on here is this.

  63. God loves His people, but God is lamenting the fact that they are living in rebellion

  64. against Him.

  65. So, He's calling them to return.

  66. He's saying, return to Me.

  67. I love you.

  68. You're wayward.

  69. You've departed from My ways.

  70. Return to Me, and I will return to You.

  71. I'm waiting for You to come back to Me.

  72. And in the context of this passage, the people's response essentially means this.

  73. They say to God, what do you mean?

  74. What do you mean we need to return?

  75. We haven't done anything wrong.

  76. That's essentially what they're saying in response.

  77. And, you know, right there, that's something to meditate on.

  78. We can be going along in our lives.

  79. We can be living, assuming that everything is good, assuming that we are, our relationship

  80. with God is healthy, and yet we can be actively rebelling against God.

  81. Even if we don't know it.

  82. We can be running from God if we're not, even if we're not aware of it.

  83. And so, God goes on in verse 8 and says, will man rob God?

  84. Yet you are robbing Me.

  85. And the Hebrew word for rob, the translation here isn't strong enough.

  86. The Hebrew word actually means to pillage, to plunder, right?

  87. To take by force.

  88. You know, imagine kicking in the door of somebody's house and beating them up and then taking all

  89. of their valuables.

  90. That's the word in context.

  91. Will man rob God?

  92. Yet you are doing that to Me.

  93. You're pillaging Me.

  94. You're plundering Me.

  95. And the people say, how in the world are we plundering you, God?

  96. And then God says, through your lack of generosity.

  97. Through your lack of generosity.

  98. So, the question is, how does a lack of generosity rob God?

  99. How does a lack of generosity plunder God?

  100. Now, here's where the gospel reading comes in.

  101. If we look at Matthew's gospel, what we just read, it's a situation where the religious leaders,

  102. they're divided over whether or not to pay taxes to Caesar.

  103. And they ask Jesus essentially a no-win question.

  104. Regardless of what he says, somebody's going to be angry at him.

  105. And so, they ask Jesus, should we pay taxes to Caesar or not?

  106. And so, Jesus gives this amazing answer.

  107. He says, bring me a coin.

  108. And by the way, Jesus was so poor that he didn't have a coin in his pocket, right?

  109. Bring me a coin.

  110. They hand him a coin.

  111. He says, whose image is stamped on this coin?

  112. And they kind of reluctantly, Caesar's, you know, they're seeing where this is going.

  113. And then Jesus says this, well, therefore, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's

  114. and to God the things that are God's.

  115. So, what's he saying there?

  116. This is an amazing answer.

  117. He says, well, you live in Caesar's empire,

  118. and you benefit from imperial roads and education and justice and freedom from invasion.

  119. The coins even have Caesar's image stamped on them.

  120. It's only right that you would render to Caesar what is Caesar's.

  121. But then what does he say?

  122. He takes a step back.

  123. He broadens it.

  124. He says, render to God the things that are God's.

  125. So, what's he saying there?

  126. He says, listen, you live in God's world.

  127. You live in a body that God gave you.

  128. You benefit from talents and gifts and resources that God has given you.

  129. Every breath you take is a gift from God.

  130. Every beat of your heart, every time it beats,

  131. it's a gift from God keeping you alive for another second.

  132. So, he's saying that coin has Caesar's image stamped on it,

  133. but you have God's image stamped on you.

  134. Render to God the things that are God's.

  135. It's an amazing answer.

  136. And it really begins to shift our perspective

  137. on the way we think about the world

  138. and the way we think about even our own bodies.

  139. Probably you're familiar with Nick Saban,

  140. the legendary Alabama football coach.

  141. I saw this clip of him giving a speech.

  142. And yes, mark it.

  143. I'm giving a sports analogy.

  144. I think I'm due.

  145. It's been about five years.

  146. I love all the sports,

  147. but Nick Saban gives this speech

  148. that people have sort of dubbed the nothing speech.

  149. Or he says this.

  150. He says,

  151. when you wake up every day,

  152. you're entitled to nothing.

  153. Nobody owes you.

  154. Right?

  155. And it's a very inspiring speech.

  156. It goes on to talk about the importance of hard work

  157. and discipline.

  158. And you have to take that talent

  159. and you have to turn it into something.

  160. And, you know,

  161. entitlement leads to disaster.

  162. And he's aiming at people who are entitled.

  163. And, you know,

  164. it's a very inspiring speech.

  165. But with all due respect to Coach Saban,

  166. Jesus takes it much, much further.

  167. So the truth that we see here is this.

  168. Not only does the world owe us nothing,

  169. but what Jesus is saying

  170. is that we owe God everything.

  171. That we owe God everything.

  172. That's the meaning of the phrase,

  173. the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

  174. The recognition that everything that we have is a gift.

  175. That everything belongs to Him.

  176. And that we owe Him everything.

  177. Right?

  178. So when God gives some of His things to us,

  179. He does it in the way that an investor

  180. would give money to a money manager.

  181. The money still belongs to the investor.

  182. But He gives it to the manager.

  183. He entrusts it to the manager to use well.

  184. And what does it mean for a manager

  185. to use that money well?

  186. Well, the job of a money manager

  187. is to use that money in ways

  188. that reflect the values and priorities of the owner.

  189. Now, the money manager is expected

  190. to be able to make a living off of this.

  191. But their primary aim

  192. is to use that money in ways

  193. that reflect the values and the priorities

  194. of the owner.

  195. And when we look at God's values and priorities,

  196. we see that God wants us to use His resources

  197. to bring glory and honor to Him.

  198. He wants to see people everywhere

  199. come to know and worship Him.

  200. He wants to see a beautiful community

  201. made up of people from every tribe

  202. and tongue and nation

  203. emerging as this great family

  204. that spans the globe.

  205. God wants to see the world filled with justice

  206. and filled with peace.

  207. God wants to see human beings flourishing together,

  208. loving and serving one another.

  209. This is God's vision for the world.

  210. And what this tells us

  211. is that we are God's money managers

  212. meant to pursue God's priorities

  213. with God's resources.

  214. We are God's money managers

  215. meant to pursue God's priorities

  216. with God's resources.

  217. And so coming back to Malachi,

  218. that's the context here.

  219. When we don't do that,

  220. when we start living and acting

  221. like His resources belong to us,

  222. we're committing cosmic fraud.

  223. All right, we're robbing God.

  224. So that's the problem in view here.

  225. And so then we have to ask,

  226. how do we know whether or not

  227. this is a problem for me?

  228. See, these people in Malachi,

  229. they had no idea this was an issue for them

  230. until God revealed it to them.

  231. And probably, honestly,

  232. most of us in this room are thinking,

  233. you know, I'm not really sure

  234. that this is an issue

  235. that I need to be worried about,

  236. but I do know somebody

  237. who is wealthier than I am,

  238. and they probably need to hear this.

  239. You know, one of the things

  240. that I hear sometimes after sermons

  241. is people say,

  242. I really appreciate the sermon.

  243. I know exactly who I'm going to send it to.

  244. You know, and of course,

  245. I appreciate that,

  246. but I would also say,

  247. well, you know,

  248. what if God was sending it to you?

  249. You know?

  250. So how do we know

  251. if this is an issue for us?

  252. And this is really where

  253. the topic of tithing comes in.

  254. In verse 8,

  255. the people say,

  256. how have we robbed you?

  257. How do we know?

  258. And God says,

  259. in your tithes and contributions.

  260. Now, what's the meaning

  261. of this concept here?

  262. In the Old Testament,

  263. God called everyone

  264. to give 10%

  265. of what they brought in

  266. for charity

  267. and ministry purposes, right?

  268. That's what the word tithe means.

  269. It means 10%.

  270. In the New Testament,

  271. there's really only one reference

  272. to tithing in the New Testament.

  273. Interestingly,

  274. when Paul talks about generosity,

  275. which he does quite a bit,

  276. he never uses the word tithe.

  277. Never uses that word.

  278. The only reference

  279. in the New Testament

  280. comes from Luke's Gospel,

  281. chapter 11.

  282. The Pharisees,

  283. as we know,

  284. were very scrupulous.

  285. They were very legalistic.

  286. They were very focused

  287. on every jot and tittle,

  288. doing everything exactly

  289. as it was prescribed

  290. in not only Scripture,

  291. but in all of the additional rules

  292. that they had created.

  293. And so they were very focused

  294. on giving exactly 10% of everything.

  295. And down to their,

  296. you know,

  297. they would have their herbs

  298. growing in their garden

  299. and they would clip off,

  300. you know,

  301. exactly 10%

  302. and bring that

  303. and give it

  304. as part of their tithe.

  305. And Jesus challenges them

  306. because of this,

  307. because they would give

  308. that 10%

  309. that they were supposed to give,

  310. and then maybe a need

  311. would arise in the community.

  312. There would be some sort

  313. of a crisis

  314. or a need,

  315. and the Pharisees

  316. would respond by saying,

  317. oh, I'm sorry,

  318. I can't help.

  319. See, I already gave my 10%,

  320. so I'm sorry.

  321. I would,

  322. but I already did

  323. what God asked me to do,

  324. so, you know,

  325. go knock on somebody else's door,

  326. you know.

  327. And so Jesus says,

  328. woe to you.

  329. Woe to you

  330. for neglecting justice.

  331. Woe to you

  332. for neglecting the love of God.

  333. That's the whole point.

  334. And so Jesus says,

  335. you should have been doing both.

  336. You know,

  337. give your tithe,

  338. that's great,

  339. but you're giving your tithe

  340. without giving your heart.

  341. You know,

  342. you should be giving

  343. your money away

  344. even as you give your heart

  345. away to God,

  346. even as you give your heart

  347. away to those in need.

  348. That's the whole reason

  349. this happens.

  350. And what we need

  351. to understand is,

  352. you know,

  353. we begin to see this emerge.

  354. A generous spirit

  355. isn't gonna focus

  356. on a percentage.

  357. You know,

  358. a generous spirit

  359. isn't gonna focus

  360. on where that line is,

  361. right?

  362. A generous spirit,

  363. somebody who's given

  364. their heart away to God,

  365. somebody who's given

  366. their heart away

  367. to the things

  368. that God cares about,

  369. they're gonna give

  370. freely and joyfully

  371. just as an overflow

  372. of love for God.

  373. That's where that giving

  374. is gonna come from.

  375. And one of the best examples

  376. of generosity in the Bible

  377. comes from the Macedonian Christians

  378. in 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9.

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  379. The apostle Paul

  380. is collecting money.

  381. There's a famine in Judea

  382. and he's collecting

  383. famine relief funds.

  384. And even though

  385. the Macedonian Christians

  386. are facing their own crisis,

  387. right,

  388. they're in the midst

  389. of their own crisis,

  390. Paul says in verse 4,

  391. they were begging us earnestly

  392. for the favor

  393. of taking part

  394. in the relief

  395. of the saints.

  396. So the amazing thing

  397. about the Macedonians is,

  398. Paul didn't ask them

  399. for money.

  400. You know,

  401. he didn't say,

  402. I know you guys

  403. are having a hard time,

  404. could you just give a little bit,

  405. just spare something?

  406. No,

  407. they're the ones

  408. who approach Paul.

  409. They come to Paul

  410. and they beg him,

  411. can we please give to this?

  412. Can we please help relieve

  413. the needs

  414. because of the famine?

  415. And so Paul's blown away

  416. by this.

  417. And what we see

  418. is a generous spirit

  419. doesn't ask,

  420. how much do I have to give?

  421. A generous spirit says,

  422. how much do I get to give?

  423. You know,

  424. it's always eagerly looking

  425. for opportunities to give.

  426. So, you know,

  427. for people like this,

  428. giving is a source of joy.

  429. When their income goes,

  430. see, you know,

  431. a lot of times

  432. you get older,

  433. you advance in your career

  434. and your income

  435. kind of, you know,

  436. goes up over time

  437. and what typically happens is

  438. your lifestyle

  439. just kind of immediately

  440. comes up, right?

  441. So you're giving,

  442. your income goes up

  443. and then your lifestyle

  444. just fills in.

  445. And then your giving goes up

  446. and your lifestyle,

  447. or I'm sorry,

  448. your income goes up

  449. and your lifestyle

  450. just kind of keeps pace

  451. with your income.

  452. But these people,

  453. the people that Paul's

  454. talking about,

  455. you know,

  456. any extra income they have,

  457. they're not thinking

  458. about lifestyle changes,

  459. they're thinking about

  460. this category over here,

  461. giving.

  462. They're like,

  463. well, this means

  464. I can give more

  465. and I can give more

  466. and I can give more.

  467. That's what a joyful giver

  468. looks like.

  469. And so the point is

  470. if we start focusing

  471. too much on an exact percentage

  472. or if we start sort of,

  473. you know,

  474. biblically looking,

  475. well,

  476. is this pre-tax

  477. or post-tax dollars?

  478. Right?

  479. We're missing the point.

  480. So 10% is,

  481. you know,

  482. Jesus doesn't abolish it,

  483. but he transforms

  484. the way we think about it.

  485. We start thinking,

  486. you know,

  487. 10% is kind of

  488. more of a baseline.

  489. It's like a starting place.

  490. You know,

  491. the idea would be

  492. we start here

  493. and then we kind of

  494. build on it.

  495. You know,

  496. and this brings us

  497. back to the point

  498. of how do we know

  499. whether or not

  500. generosity is a problem

  501. for me?

  502. And I would say

  503. if we don't think

  504. about generosity

  505. the way that we've

  506. been describing here,

  507. right,

  508. the way that we might see

  509. in the example

  510. of the Macedonians,

  511. if giving is really

  512. hard for us,

  513. then it's worth

  514. a closer look

  515. at our hearts.

  516. Right?

  517. And this is where

  518. tithing comes in

  519. because for most people,

  520. I mean,

  521. pretty much everybody

  522. I know,

  523. including us,

  524. giving away 10%

  525. of your income

  526. is something

  527. that you feel.

  528. You can't give away

  529. 10% of what you're

  530. bringing in

  531. and not know it,

  532. right?

  533. And not,

  534. and not,

  535. and not probably

  536. have to make some

  537. cuts and sacrifices

  538. in other areas

  539. of your life.

  540. And so that's why

  541. 10% is a good

  542. starting place

  543. because if giving

  544. at that level

  545. feels unthinkable,

  546. it's worth

  547. a closer look.

  548. Not just at the budget,

  549. but at our heart.

  550. So the question

  551. then becomes,

  552. for those of us

  553. who do struggle

  554. with generosity,

  555. if we're sort of

  556. sitting here thinking

  557. and, you know,

  558. sort of reflecting

  559. and thinking,

  560. well, maybe this is

  561. kind of an issue

  562. for me.

  563. What can we do

  564. about it?

  565. You know,

  566. research estimates

  567. that if all Christians

  568. in the U.S.

  569. started tithing,

  570. that that would mean

  571. at a minimum

  572. roughly $165 billion

  573. extra dollars

  574. going to various

  575. churches and ministries,

  576. right?

  577. So on the one hand,

  578. I would say

  579. when we think about

  580. tithing,

  581. that doesn't necessarily

  582. mean,

  583. I'm not saying,

  584. like,

  585. start writing your checks

  586. to Church of the Advent,

  587. right?

  588. In the Old Testament,

  589. it was the temple,

  590. but in the New Testament,

  591. in the New Covenant world,

  592. there's no equivalent

  593. for the temple,

  594. right?

  595. So you're looking

  596. at local churches

  597. and ministries

  598. and nonprofits,

  599. missionaries,

  600. whatever things

  601. that we support.

  602. What I would say

  603. is this,

  604. if everybody

  605. actually started

  606. tithing,

  607. right,

  608. churches,

  609. ministries,

  610. nonprofits

  611. would be inundated

  612. with resources,

  613. right?

  614. Everybody,

  615. everybody would,

  616. everybody would feel it.

  617. So how can we be

  618. more generous

  619. as a people?

  620. And I would say

  621. a couple of things

  622. coming out of this passage.

  623. Number one,

  624. follow the money,

  625. right?

  626. In the original context

  627. of the film

  628. that that comes from,

  629. the idea is

  630. that if you follow

  631. the money,

  632. that will lead you

  633. to the corruption.

  634. Where's the corruption?

  635. And it's the same idea here.

  636. Verse 10,

  637. God calls His people

  638. to bring the full tithe

  639. into the temple treasury.

  640. And in other words,

  641. He's saying,

  642. devote your full tithe

  643. to the worship

  644. and ministry of God.

  645. Now,

  646. is this because

  647. God needs money?

  648. Class?

  649. No,

  650. absolutely not,

  651. right?

  652. God doesn't need money,

  653. just so we're clear on that.

  654. So why would God say this?

  655. It's because God knows

  656. that our spending habits

  657. reveal what we really love

  658. and worship.

  659. So as Jesus once said

  660. in the Gospels,

  661. where your treasure is,

  662. there your heart

  663. will be also.

  664. Or in this context,

  665. where your treasury is,

  666. there your heart

  667. will be also.

  668. If it's hard for you

  669. to consider giving

  670. 10% away to ministry

  671. and to charity,

  672. ask yourself,

  673. well,

  674. if it's hard for me

  675. to give money here,

  676. where is it easy

  677. for me to give money?

  678. Where are the areas

  679. in my life

  680. where I never have

  681. to tell myself,

  682. you should spend

  683. more on this?

  684. So start asking yourself,

  685. where does your money go?

  686. Right?

  687. So if we find

  688. that we're spending,

  689. easily spending

  690. too much money

  691. on food and entertainment,

  692. we don't even think about it.

  693. We never,

  694. you never have to set a goal

  695. to say,

  696. I need to go

  697. to more nice restaurants.

  698. I need to go

  699. on more trips,

  700. right?

  701. We never have to set

  702. a goal for that,

  703. right?

  704. If you do,

  705. we'll get to you

  706. in a second.

  707. But a lot of us,

  708. we don't,

  709. right?

  710. If that's an area

  711. where you tend to spend

  712. more than you should

  713. and every few months

  714. you're looking

  715. and you're thinking

  716. or maybe you're talking

  717. to your spouse

  718. and you're saying,

  719. we really need

  720. to bring this down.

  721. We're spending

  722. way too much

  723. on groceries

  724. and eating out

  725. and all that.

  726. We need to bring

  727. this down,

  728. right?

  729. Maybe that's where

  730. your money goes.

  731. Or maybe some of us,

  732. we spend money easily

  733. on how we look.

  734. We buy clothes,

  735. we buy accessories,

  736. hair,

  737. makeup products,

  738. other enhancements,

  739. right?

  740. I'll just leave that

  741. a big broad category.

  742. Whatever that may be,

  743. right?

  744. Or maybe we're

  745. the kind of people

  746. who we scoff at people

  747. who spend their money

  748. on going out.

  749. We're like,

  750. I never eat out,

  751. right?

  752. I always eat at home

  753. and we,

  754. you know,

  755. we go to Aldi

  756. once a month

  757. and it's a rigorous budget

  758. and everything

  759. is accounted for

  760. and everybody's allowed

  761. one egg a week

  762. and we do it,

  763. you know,

  764. we keep it,

  765. you know,

  766. and you're very good

  767. about that

  768. and you're really focused

  769. on making good investments

  770. and you're really focused

  771. on building your retirement,

  772. right?

  773. So there's different

  774. kinds of people

  775. but here's the thing,

  776. there's nothing wrong

  777. with going out

  778. to eat at restaurants.

  779. I love going out

  780. to eat.

  781. There's nothing wrong

  782. with buying good food.

  783. There's nothing wrong

  784. with spending money

  785. on your appearance

  786. to make sure you look good

  787. and look professional.

  788. There's nothing wrong

  789. with building a retirement account.

  790. There's nothing wrong

  791. with any of these things

  792. specifically,

  793. right?

  794. What's the point?

  795. The point is what Jesus said,

  796. right?

  797. Where your treasury is,

  798. there your heart

  799. will be also.

  800. So the thing

  801. that we need to ask is

  802. if it's really hard

  803. for me to think

  804. about giving generously

  805. for God's purposes

  806. and it's really easy

  807. for me to spend

  808. way too much over here,

  809. then where's my heart?

  810. What's really going on inside?

  811. What am I really worshiping?

  812. Right?

  813. This tells us

  814. where our real treasury is,

  815. where our heart

  816. really dwells.

  817. We may say

  818. that we love

  819. and worship God,

  820. but our spending habits

  821. would say otherwise.

  822. So, you know,

  823. in truth,

  824. maybe we love

  825. and worship pleasure

  826. and escapism.

  827. Or maybe we love

  828. and worship

  829. feeling attractive.

  830. Or maybe we love

  831. and worship

  832. financial security

  833. or the status

  834. that that brings us.

  835. The truth is

  836. we are all

  837. extravagantly generous

  838. with our money

  839. when it comes

  840. to the things

  841. that we worship.

  842. You never have

  843. to be convinced

  844. to give generously

  845. to your God.

  846. We all are

  847. overwhelmingly generous

  848. in service

  849. of our God.

  850. So financial change

  851. begins with

  852. spiritual change.

  853. We have to change

  854. what we worship

  855. if we want to change

  856. how we spend

  857. our money.

  858. And that's what leads us

  859. to the second thing.

  860. So we say

  861. follow the money,

  862. number one,

  863. and then number two,

  864. focus on God's generosity.

  865. That's how we're

  866. going to change.

  867. God says,

  868. bring your full tithe

  869. and thereby

  870. put me to the test.

  871. See if I will not

  872. open the windows

  873. of heaven for you

  874. and pour down for you

  875. a blessing

  876. until there's no more need.

  877. Now,

  878. this is a verse

  879. that prosperity

  880. gospel preachers

  881. have twisted

  882. and abused.

  883. Okay,

  884. now if you're not

  885. familiar with the

  886. prosperity gospel,

  887. don't worry about it.

  888. You don't need to know.

  889. But if you do want

  890. to know,

  891. prosperity gospel preachers

  892. tell their followers,

  893. send all your money,

  894. send your grandparents' money,

  895. send your inheritance,

  896. send all your money

  897. into my ministry,

  898. and in return,

  899. and you're going to

  900. put God to the test,

  901. and then God is

  902. contractually obligated,

  903. see he says it right here,

  904. to pour down even greater

  905. financial blessings on you.

  906. So put God to the test,

  907. give as much as you can

  908. to my ministry,

  909. and then God is going

  910. to open the windows

  911. and pour out the storehouse

  912. onto you.

  913. They're taking these verses

  914. completely out of context.

  915. See,

  916. in this particular context,

  917. God's not talking about

  918. money raining down,

  919. you know.

  920. What's that like gun

  921. that like fires bills out,

  922. you know,

  923. you imagine God's going,

  924. you know.

  925. This is not what this verse

  926. is talking about.

  927. God's talking about

  928. literal rain,

  929. because there's a famine

  930. in the land,

  931. and God's talking about

  932. it's going to,

  933. you know,

  934. God,

  935. trust that God

  936. is going to bring an end

  937. to this.

  938. Trust that God

  939. is going to bring an end

  940. to the blight,

  941. right?

  942. You don't have to live

  943. with a scarcity mentality.

  944. You can continue

  945. to give generously

  946. and know that God

  947. is going to come through,

  948. right?

  949. So that's what he's talking about.

  950. So the prosperity gospel

  951. is a get-rich-quick scheme

  952. based on manipulating God.

  953. If you do this,

  954. God has to bless you financially.

  955. So it teaches the opposite

  956. of what this passage means,

  957. because here's the problem

  958. with the prosperity gospel

  959. in a nutshell.

  960. Instead of using money

  961. to worship God,

  962. it uses God

  963. to worship money.

  964. Right?

  965. We've been talking

  966. this entire time

  967. about how the way

  968. we use our money

  969. is a way of worshiping God,

  970. but instead of doing that,

  971. it tries to use God

  972. to worship money,

  973. and frankly,

  974. it is evil.

  975. There is no nuance on that.

  976. I love nuance,

  977. but in this case,

  978. it is evil,

  979. and it ensnares

  980. many, many, many people.

  981. So what does this passage mean?

  982. Here's what it means.

  983. None of the things

  984. that we worship

  985. are ever gonna give us

  986. what they promise.

  987. Right?

  988. The more you worship beauty,

  989. the more you're gonna feel

  990. unattractive.

  991. The more you worship status,

  992. the more you're gonna feel inadequate.

  993. The more you worship safety,

  994. the more you're always

  995. gonna be insecure.

  996. If you worship pleasure,

  997. you're always gonna be unsatisfied.

  998. You're gonna be chasing

  999. that next hit of dopamine,

  1000. that next high.

  1001. If you worship control,

1002. you're always gonna feel anxious.

  1003. Right?

1004. People who struggle with anxiety,

  1005. sometimes, many times,

  1006. there's underlying that

  1007. a worship of control,

1008. a need to be in control.

1009. If you worship and idealize

1010. your children or your family,

  1011. right,

1012. if you project the image

  1013. of a perfect family

  1014. or a perfect marriage

1015. because that's what you need it to be

  1016. to show the world,

1017. they're never gonna be good enough.

1018. You're always gonna find fault with them.

  1019. Right?

  1020. You're gonna crush them

  1021. under the weight

  1022. of unrealistic expectations.

1023. So nothing that we worship

1024. delivers on what it promises.

1025. And so God is saying this,

  1026. come to my treasury,

  1027. come to my storehouse,

  1028. come to my temple

1029. and see if you don't find

  1030. everything that you seek.

1031. The greatest blessing in history

1032. is not something that God gives us.

1033. The greatest blessing in history

1034. is that God has given us himself.

1035. And if we remember the generosity

  1036. of the Macedonian Christians,

1037. they were willing to give abundantly

1038. even though they were poor.

  1039. Right?

1040. They gave out of their poverty.

1041. Now, where did they see that happen?

1042. Well, the secret of their generosity

  1043. is what Paul says

  1044. in chapter 8, verse 9.

1045. For you know the grace

1046. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1047. that though he was rich,

  1048. yet for your sake

  1049. he became poor

1050. so that you by his poverty

  1051. might become rich.

1052. And they had seen Jesus Christ

  1053. who was rich.

1054. They had seen him be willing

  1055. to become poor.

1056. And that they had seen

  1057. that through his poverty,

  1058. through his suffering

1059. and death on the cross,

  1060. they became rich

  1061. beyond all imagination.

  1062. That secured for them

  1063. an eternal inheritance.

1064. They knew that because of that,

  1065. they belonged to God.

1066. And all of the stuff

1067. that is going to one day fade,

  1068. all of the money

  1069. that is one day

  1070. going to be meaningless,

1071. all that is going to fade,

1072. and yet what they have

  1073. in Jesus Christ

  1074. is eternal

  1075. and forever

  1076. and priceless.

1077. And that had so changed

  1078. their hearts

1079. that it changed the way

1080. they thought about their money.

  1081. And they were like,

  1082. oh, yeah,

1083. we would love to become poor

1084. so that you might become rich.

1085. Paul, can we please help

  1086. with this famine relief?

1087. We would love to do that

  1088. because that's exactly

1089. what he did for us.

1090. And it begins to change

1091. the way you think about

  1092. your own priorities.

  1093. Because you realize

  1094. Jesus didn't just give 10%.

  1095. Right?

1096. Jesus gave everything he had

1097. because that's what love does.

1098. And in all the universe,

  1099. there's nothing that,

1100. there's nothing that he loves

1101. more than he loves you.

1102. So whatever else we worship,

1103. whatever treasury holds our heart,

1104. we're never going to find

1105. a greater love than that.

  1106. So this question

1107. that we are asking ourselves,

1108. do we want to become

  1109. more generous?

  1110. Focus on the cross.

1111. Focus on God's ultimate display

  1112. of generosity.

  1113. His generosity to us

  1114. because we,

1115. because we are his treasure.

  1116. Let's pray.

1117. Lord, we thank you for this

  1118. and pray that whatever,

  1119. whatever of this

  1120. we need to hear,

  1121. Lord, whether,

  1122. whether,

  1123. whether we are here

  1124. and we are,

1125. we are filled with joy

1126. at every opportunity to give

1127. and we love to give

1128. and we love to see

1129. the fruit of our giving

  1130. and we love to,

  1131. to see your heart

  1132. reflected in that,

  1133. Lord.

1134. I pray that we would hear

1135. our hearts affirmed in this.

1136. And for all of us

  1137. who,

  1138. who struggle

  1139. with generosity

  1140. or who are generous

1141. maybe in the wrong direction,

  1142. Lord.

  1143. Lord,

1144. I pray that this would

  1145. challenge us.

1146. I pray that it would inspire us.

  1147. Lord,

1148. I pray that your gospel

  1149. would,

  1150. would penetrate

  1151. and permeate

  1152. our hearts,

  1153. Lord.

  1154. And,

1155. and I pray that we would be

  1156. known,

  1157. Lord,

1158. as a people who are

  1159. extravagantly generous,

  1160. Lord,

1161. in all that we do

  1162. and how we live.

  1163. I pray this,

1164. that it would bring you glory,

1165. that it would set us apart,

1166. that it would provoke questions

1167. only the gospel can answer.

1168. Pray this in your son's name.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Amen.

  1177. Amen.

  1178. Amen.

  1179. Amen.

  1180. Amen.

  1181. Amen.

  1182. May I pray.

  1183. Amen.

  1184. Amen.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. Amen.

  1187. Amen.

  1188. Amen.
