  1. Be seated.

  2. Well, one of my favorite Advent traditions

  3. that I try to do every year is to go and see Handel's Messiah.

  4. And last night, Molly and I had the opportunity

  5. to go see it at the National Cathedral.

  6. And if you've ever gotten the chance to see it there,

  7. it's an amazing, beautiful setting

  8. to see this masterpiece of music

  9. that was written by George Friedrich Handel in 1741.

  10. And it has become one of the most well-known,

  11. one of the most often performed pieces of music in history.

  12. And the music itself is, of course, masterful.

  13. But what's so amazing, if you've ever heard it

  14. or seen it performed,

  15. is that all the words are directly from Scripture.

  16. It tells the story of redemption

  17. straight from the Bible.

  18. Handel set the message of redemption to music.

  19. And it is absolutely beautiful.

  20. And it about brings me to tears

  21. almost every time I listen to it.

  22. And three of the very first songs,

  23. in fact, there's five in total,

  24. that actually, of Handel's Messiah,

  25. actually come straight from our text this morning,

  26. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  27. And part of what I love about the Messiah

  28. is that I think it beautifully captures

  29. the tone and the mood of Isaiah 40,

  30. which is one of God speaking words of comfort

  31. to his people.

  32. And I promise you,

  33. I'm not gonna sing Isaiah 40 this morning,

  34. much to your joy,

  35. but I'm gonna preach it.

  36. And hopefully,

  37. we'll hear God's words of comfort

  38. to us this morning.

  39. The background to Isaiah chapter 40

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  40. is the Babylonian exile.

  41. Chapters one through 39 of the prophet Isaiah

  42. are about what is happening in Isaiah's day

  43. before the exile,

  44. when the kingdom of Assyria

  45. is the major threat.

  46. And there comes this turning point

  47. in the book of Isaiah in chapter 39,

  48. when King Hezekiah makes a foolish decision.

  49. He welcomes ambassadors from the kingdom of Babylon,

  50. a kingdom that's not yet a threat.

  51. And he gives these ambassadors,

  52. these envoys,

  53. a tour of his whole palace and armory

  54. and the temple.

  55. And he shows them all the silver and gold

  56. and all his wealth in the palace

  57. and all of his storehouses.

  58. And by the way,

  59. if you happen to work in foreign policy,

  60. I would not recommend this as a strategy

  61. for foreign policy

  62. because chapter 39

  63. ends with the prophet Isaiah

  64. telling King Hezekiah,

  65. the time will surely come

  66. when everything that you've just showed,

  67. these ambassadors from Babylon,

  68. and that all that your predecessors

  69. have stored up until this day

  70. will be carried off into exile.

  71. And a couple generations later,

  72. that is exactly what happened.

  73. God had sent Israel prophet after prophet,

  74. warning after warning,

  75. until he finally allowed Jerusalem

  76. to be captured by the Babylonians.

  77. And his people

  78. were forced from their homes

  79. and torn from everything

  80. that was familiar to them

  81. and taken to a foreign land in tears.

  82. And Isaiah,

  83. though he lived in the time

  84. before the exile,

  85. God gave him the prophetic task

  86. of writing these words

  87. to an audience centuries in the future.

  88. And it's to people living in the pain

  89. and the grief

  90. and the disorientation of exile

  91. that God speaks these words of comfort

  92. here in Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  93. And even though we may not be living

  94. in a literal exile today,

  95. we need these words of comfort

  96. and consolation

  97. just as much as they did

  98. because all of us,

  99. if we're honest,

  100. face the pain

  101. and grief

  102. and difficult circumstances

  103. of life in a fallen world,

  104. which is in its own way

  105. its own experience of exile,

  106. of feeling far from home,

  107. of feeling like this world

  108. is not our true home,

  109. it's not the way it's supposed to be.

  110. Perhaps this morning,

  111. as you come into the season of Advent,

  112. you have felt this

  113. more heavily

  114. this year

  115. or in recent months

  116. than in any other season of your life.

  117. Maybe you're coming into the season of Advent

  118. not with celebration and joy,

  119. but with tears

  120. and with grief

  121. and wrestling with God.

  122. And if that's you,

  123. I wanna invite you to listen

  124. to what's here in Isaiah chapter 40 this morning.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  125. I wanna invite you to listen

  126. to three voices of comfort.

  127. Three voices of comfort.

  128. Here in Isaiah 40,

  129. we see a voice of assurance,

  130. a voice of hope,

  131. and a voice of love.

  132. A voice of assurance,

  133. a voice of hope,

  134. and a voice of love.

  135. So first of all,

  136. we see here in this passage

  137. that we are comforted

  138. with a voice of assurance.

  139. I wonder how you imagine

  140. God's voice sounds like.

  141. I wonder what the tone is.

  142. I wonder what the mood is

  143. when you imagine God's voice.

  144. Is it a deep bass voice

  145. that sounds like Morgan Freeman?

  146. Is it super spiritual

  147. and high-pitched and angelic?

  148. Is it dry and boring?

  149. Is it harsh and condemning?

  150. It's interesting.

  151. Notice how verses one and two

  152. start with this.

  153. Comfort, comfort my people,

  154. says your God.

  155. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.

  156. The tone in God's voice here

  157. is one of tenderness,

  158. gentleness, comfort.

  159. He's bringing them

  160. a message of consolation.

  161. And what is that message?

  162. We see in verse three,

  163. and cry to her

  164. that her warfare is ended,

  165. that her iniquity is pardoned,

  166. that she has received

  167. from the Lord's hand

  168. double for all her sins.

  169. God is speaking a word of comfort

  170. to his people here

  171. about the forgiveness of their sins.

  172. The people in Israel knew

  173. why they were in exile.

  174. They were rightly receiving

  175. God's discipline

  176. for generations of unfaithfulness,

  177. idolatry, rebellion.

  178. And I wonder

  179. what it would have been like

  180. to sit around a Jewish dinner table

  181. in exile in Babylon.

  182. I wonder what sorts of things

  183. would have been said.

  184. I wonder what things

  185. would have gone unsaid.

  186. I wonder what questions

  187. would have been asked.

  188. I wonder what fears

  189. and sorrows

  190. would have been expressed

  191. around that dinner table

  192. in Babylon.

  193. And I have to imagine,

  194. whether it went said or unsaid,

  195. that one of the questions

  196. they wrestled with in exile

  197. is this,

  198. are we beyond God's forgiveness?

  199. Did we sin too greatly?

  200. Did we go too far?

  201. Are we past the boundaries

  202. of God's mercy?

  203. But God says to his people here

  204. in Isaiah 40,

  205. not only are you

  206. not beyond the scope

  207. of my mercy and forgiveness,

  208. but in fact,

  209. I have already forgiven you.

  210. I'm not waiting

  211. for your exile to be over,

  212. for your sins to be atoned for.

  213. It's not the exile

  214. that's atoning for your sins.

  215. I have already atoned

  216. for them myself.

  217. And in fact,

  218. I have given you double

  219. for all your sins.

  220. This is the image

  221. of a double portion.

  222. A double portion

  223. is something

  224. that is overflowing

  225. with extravagance

  226. and generosity

  227. beyond what is expected

  228. or even necessary.

  229. God is saying,

  230. I've done way more

  231. than just forgiven you.

  232. In fact,

  233. I'm here to comfort you

  234. and to assure you

  235. that you're still mine,

  236. that you still belong to me,

  237. that you're forgiven.

  238. Though Israel had to endure

  239. God's discipline

  240. for a short time,

  241. it was impossible

  242. for them

  243. to have sinned

  244. too greatly

  245. to be beyond God's mercy.

  246. And this is a word

  247. of comfort

  248. that they needed to hear

  249. in the exile,

  250. and this is a word

  251. of comfort

  252. that we need

  253. to hear today.

  254. Do you ever wonder

  255. if you can have

  256. real

  257. and lasting assurance

  258. that you are

  259. right with God?

  260. Have you ever wondered

  261. that

  262. perhaps

  263. maybe he forgave you

  264. for those things

  265. in your past,

  266. but maybe now

  267. you've,

  268. maybe now you've gone too far.

  269. Maybe you've crossed a line.

  270. Maybe you've,

  271. now you're past

  272. the point of no return.

  273. You're past the boundaries

  274. of God's mercy

  275. that maybe God's patience

  276. has run out on you.

  277. And if that's you,

  278. hear these words

  279. of comfort

  280. and assurance

  281. that is here

  282. in this text.

  283. We can know

  284. that we can

  285. have real assurance

  286. in the forgiveness

  287. of our sins

  288. not because of anything

  289. that we have done,

  290. but because of what we see

  291. here in verse two,

  292. that forgiveness

  293. is something that comes

  294. from the hand

  295. of the Lord.

  296. It is given

  297. and received

  298. not something

  299. that is earned

  300. or achieved.

  301. Our assurance

  302. is not based

  303. in our character,

  304. but in the character

  305. of God.

  306. And yes,

  307. it's true.

  308. Like Israel,

  309. sometimes we do have

  310. to experience

  311. the Lord's discipline

  312. for a season.

  313. Sometimes we do have

  314. to face the real

  315. painful consequences

  316. for our sin.

  317. but even still,

  318. we cannot

  319. out-sin

  320. the mercy

  321. of God.

  322. There is more

  323. mercy in God

  324. than there is sin

  325. in us.

  326. And the tender

  327. heart of God

  328. longs to comfort us

  329. with the news

  330. that our sins

  331. are forgiven,

  332. to assure us

  333. that we are His,

  334. that we belong

  335. to Him.

  336. And that's the first

  337. voice that we see.

  338. We are comforted

  339. with a voice

  340. of assurance

  341. about God's forgiveness.

  342. But the second voice

  343. that we see

  344. is a voice

  345. of hope.

  346. We are comforted

  347. with a voice

  348. of hope.

  349. During my first year

  350. in seminary

  351. in St. Louis,

  352. I found myself

  353. in a room

  354. with a counselor.

  355. And it was that,

  356. in that first year

  357. of seminary

  358. that I was

  359. stumbling

  360. for the first time

  361. and trying to unpack

  362. the complexity

  363. of my inner life.

  364. And part of

  365. what that counselor

  366. helped me do,

  367. and maybe a counselor

  368. has helped

  369. do this for you,

  370. but part of what

  371. he helped me do

  372. is to learn

  373. how to name

  374. and process

  375. my grief.

  376. I didn't realize it,

  377. but there were

  378. a lot of things

  379. that I was grieving.

  380. And as a good counselor

  381. does,

  382. he picked up on it.

  383. And I distinctly

  384. remember him saying

  385. one thing to me

  386. in one of our sessions,

  387. and he says,

  388. Jeff,

  389. it sounds like

  390. you think

  391. that your best days

  392. are behind you.

  393. And I'll always

  394. remember that

  395. because he hit

  396. the nail on the head

  397. because he was able

  398. to articulate

  399. my grief

  400. in a way

  401. that I wasn't.

  402. And that named

  403. for me

  404. what I felt like

  405. was the grief

  406. under the grief.

  407. And the grief

  408. under the grief

  409. was I felt like

  410. that the glory days

  411. were gone

  412. never to return again.

  413. And I think

  414. if we go back

  415. to that Jewish

  416. dinner table

  417. in Babylon

  418. in exile,

  419. I wonder

  420. if this was a question

  421. on their minds

  422. as well.

  423. Are the glory days

  424. behind us?

  425. Is our story over?

  426. Has it come to an end?

  427. Israel, of course,

  428. had a clear sense

  429. of its own story.

  430. They were the people

  431. that God had rescued

  432. from slavery

  433. in Egypt

  434. and brought

  435. into the wilderness,

  436. brought through the wilderness

  437. into the promised lands

  438. to be a light

  439. to the nations.

  440. And yet now

  441. it seemed like

  442. they were

  443. back in slavery,

  444. back in the wilderness.

  445. It seemed to them

  446. that maybe their story

  447. had come to an end,

  448. that maybe their best days

  449. were behind them,

  450. that the glory days

  451. were over.

  452. And it's to this group

  453. of people

  454. that God,

  455. through the prophet Isaiah,

  456. speaks a comforting

  457. word of hope.

  458. Verse three,

  459. a voice cries

  460. in the wilderness,

  461. prepare the way

  462. of the Lord.

  463. Make straight

  464. in the desert

  465. a highway

  466. for our God.

  467. Every valley

  468. shall be lifted up

  469. and every mountain

  470. and hill

  471. be made low.

  472. the uneven ground

  473. shall become level

  474. and the rough places

  475. a plain.

  476. And the glory

  477. of the Lord

  478. shall be revealed

  479. and all flesh

  480. shall see it together

  481. for the mouth

  482. of the Lord

  483. has spoken.

  484. This image

  485. of a highway

  486. is an ancient image

  487. for when a road

  488. would be constructed

  489. over rough terrain

  490. as a processional route

  491. for a king

  492. coming into a city

  493. so that all

  494. of his chariots

  495. and horses

  496. and soldiers

  497. could pass through

  498. on smooth ground.

  499. And Isaiah says

  500. that this is what

  501. is going to happen

  502. when God comes.

  503. He is going to come

  504. as a king

  505. and he is going

  506. to come

  507. and reveal

  508. his glory

  509. to the world.

  510. And that when he does,

  511. his rule

  512. is gonna transform

  513. the whole creation.

  514. all of the unjust

  515. power structures

  516. that oppress people,

  517. all of the sin

  518. and idolatry

  519. that dehumanize people,

  520. all of the hatred

  521. and all of the violence

  522. that divide people,

  523. all of the rough terrain

  524. is gonna be smoothed out

  525. when God the king

  526. comes and reveals

  527. his glory.

  528. And this is an incredible

  529. word of hope

  530. that God is speaking

  531. to Israel

  532. that their story

  533. doesn't end

  534. in exile

  535. but with the glory

  536. of God

  537. transforming

  538. the whole creation.

  539. And not just them

  540. but all flesh,

  541. all creation,

  542. all the nations

  543. of the earth

  544. are gonna see it.

  545. And God offers us

  546. the same hope

  547. that if we,

  548. if you belong to him

  549. that your story,

  550. your individual story

  551. is bound up

  552. in the transformation

  553. of all things

  554. and the revelation

  555. of the glory of God

  556. to all people.

  557. And because that's true,

  558. your story

  559. is far from over.

  560. Your best days

  561. aren't behind you,

  562. they're ahead of you.

  563. And so if life for you

  564. feels like

  565. exile

  566. or wilderness

  567. right now

  568. because of grief

  569. or pain

  570. or difficult circumstances,

  571. if that's you,

  572. let me invite you

  573. to see what is here

  574. in this text.

  575. That it's in those places.

  576. It's in the wilderness.

  577. It's in exile

  578. where God comes

  579. to reveal

  580. his glory

  581. and to smooth out

  582. the rough places.

  583. He comes

  584. in the desert.

  585. He comes

  586. in the valleys.

  587. He comes

  588. in the rough places

  589. to reveal

  590. his glory

  591. to the world.

  592. That is where God comes

  593. and transforms

  594. the rough terrain

  595. of our lives

  596. and our world

  597. into places

  598. of beauty

  599. and glory.

  600. And this hope

  601. is not dependent

  602. upon human ability

  603. or wisdom

  604. or power,

  605. but on the wisdom

  606. and power

  607. of God's word.

  608. And that is what we see

  609. next in verses

  610. six through eight.

  611. All flesh

  612. is grass

  613. and all its beauty

  614. like the flowers

  615. of the field.

  616. The grass

  617. withers

  618. and the flower

  619. fades,

  620. but the word

  621. of our God

  622. will stand forever.

  623. people are

  624. as fragile

  625. and as frail

  626. as grass.

  627. Here today,

  628. gone tomorrow.

  629. Kingdoms rise

  630. and fall,

  631. political leaders

  632. come and go.

  633. Ideas

  634. and technology

  635. come and go.

  636. It's frail.

  637. It's frail.

  638. It's momentary.

  639. And that is why

  640. we can't place

  641. our ultimate hope

  642. in any person

  643. or any of the

  644. thousand things

  645. that human beings

  646. put their hope in,

  647. whether it's kings

  648. or presidents

  649. or historical circumstances

  650. or intellect

  651. or all beauty.

  652. They're all

  653. too frail.

  654. They're all

  655. too temporary.

  656. They're all

  657. too momentary.

  658. But God's word

  659. is eternal.

  660. And that is where

  661. true hope

  662. is to be found.

  663. And if he said

  664. it's true,

  665. it's going to come true.

  666. Isaiah says,

  667. the mouth

  668. of the Lord

  669. has spoken.

  670. That was the

  671. original mic drop.

  672. Right?

  673. The mouth

  674. of the Lord

  675. has spoken.

  676. And when we

  677. see what's

  678. promised to us

  679. here,

  680. the transformation

  681. of all creation,

  682. that's incredible

  683. comfort.

  684. It's going to happen

  685. because it's based

  686. on God's word.

  687. So first of all,

  688. we're comforted

  689. with a voice

  690. of assurance

  691. about God's

  692. forgiveness.

  693. Second,

  694. we are comforted

  695. with a voice

  696. of hope

  697. about God's

  698. glory.

  699. Thirdly,

  700. finally,

  701. we see

  702. a third voice,

  703. that we are

  704. comforted with

  705. a voice

  706. of love.

  707. A voice

  708. of love.

  709. If we go back

  710. to that Jewish

  711. dinner table

  712. in Babylon

  713. one more time

  714. and we look

  715. outside

  716. and we see

  717. an unfamiliar

  718. place,

  719. an unfamiliar

  720. culture,

  721. unfamiliar

  722. food,

  723. unfamiliar

  724. language,

  725. I would

  726. imagine,

  727. again,

  728. spoken or

  729. unspoken,

  730. that a

  731. question

  732. that arose

  733. around that

  734. dinner table

  735. was,

  736. are we

  737. alone?

  738. Has God

  739. forgotten us?

  740. Has he abandoned

  741. us?

  742. Has he forsaken

  743. us?

  744. Look at verse

  745. 10 and 11.

  746. Behold,

  747. the Lord God

  748. comes

  749. with might

  750. and his

  751. arm rules

  752. for him.

  753. Behold,

  754. his reward

  755. is with him

  756. and his

  757. recompense

  758. before him.

  759. He will

  760. tend his

  761. flock

  762. like a

  763. shepherd.

  764. He will

  765. gather the

  766. lambs in

  767. his arms,

  768. he will

  769. carry them

  770. in his

  771. bosom

  772. and gently

  773. lead those

  774. that are

  775. with young.

  776. This

  777. is the

  778. image of

  779. God

  780. as a

  781. warrior

  782. shepherd.

  783. God

  784. promises

  785. to come,

  786. yes,

  787. as a

  788. conquering

  789. king

  790. who reigns

  791. and who

  792. rewards

  793. his people

  794. with victory.

  795. But don't

  796. miss that

  797. the end

  798. goal of

  799. the reigning

  800. conquering

  801. king is

  802. to dwell

  803. with his

  804. people in

  805. love as

  806. a shepherd.

  807. This is

  808. one of the

  809. most intimate

  810. images in

  811. scripture about

  812. God's loving

  813. presence with

  814. his people.

  815. He gathers

  816. them into

  817. his arms.

  818. And brings

  819. them close

  820. to his

  821. chest.

  822. He says

  823. to Israel,

  824. I haven't

  825. forgotten you,

  826. I haven't

  827. forsaken

  828. you,

  829. you are

  830. not alone.

  831. My whole

  832. purpose is

  833. to come

  834. and to dwell

  835. with you

  836. in love.

  837. And he

  838. says the

  839. same thing

  840. to us.

  841. God

  842. longs to

  843. dwell with

  844. us in

  845. a loving

  846. relationship

  847. as a

  848. shepherd,

  849. to be

  850. present with

  851. us,

  852. to lead

  853. us and

  854. to guide

  855. us,

  856. to nourish

  857. us,

  858. and to

  859. bind up

  860. our

  861. wounds.

  862. And if

  863. you're here

  864. this morning

  865. and you

  866. are especially

  867. grieving or

  868. suffering,

  869. look at

  870. this image

  871. here in

  872. Isaiah 40

  873. that the

  874. God of

  875. Isaiah 40

  876. is not

  877. a God

  878. who has

  879. left you

  880. alone,

  881. but who

  882. gathers

  883. you into

  884. his arms

  885. and who

  886. holds you

  887. close to

  888. his chest.

  889. There is

  890. incredible

  891. comfort for

  892. us here in

  893. this image

  894. of our

  895. God as

  896. a shepherd,

  897. warrior,

  898. king.

  899. And so

  900. there's

  901. incredible

  902. comfort here.

  903. There's

  904. comfort all

  905. over this

  906. passage and

  907. in fact,

  908. if you

  909. read the

  910. rest of

  911. Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  912. chapter 40,

  913. there's

  914. more

  915. comfort.

  916. There's

  917. comfort that

  918. is extravagant

  919. and poured

  920. out.

  921. And I

  922. wish I

  923. had time

  924. to preach

  925. the rest

  926. of the

  927. chapter because

  928. the entire

  929. chapter of

  930. Isaiah 40

  931. is glorious.

  932. It's one of

  933. the most

  934. amazing

  935. chapters in

  936. all of

  937. scripture.

  938. And so I

  939. encourage you

  940. later today

  941. to go home

  942. and read

  943. the whole

  944. chapter because

  945. it is just

  946. overflowing

  947. with comfort.

  948. But here in

  949. these verses we

  950. see that we're

  951. comforted with a

  952. voice of

  953. assurance about

  954. God's

  955. forgiveness,

  956. that we're not

  957. beyond his

  958. mercy.

  959. We're comforted

  960. with a voice of

  961. hope about

  962. God's glory,

  963. that our

  964. story's not

  965. over.

  966. And we're

  967. comforted with a

  968. voice of love

  969. about God's

  970. presence who

  971. comes to dwell

  972. with his

  973. people,

  974. that we are

  975. not alone.

  976. And centuries

  977. later, these

  978. words of

  979. comfort would

  980. leap off the

  981. page and

  982. take on

  983. flesh.

  984. In Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  985. chapter 1,

  986. our gospel

  987. reading, John

  988. the Baptist

  989. says, that

  990. voice in Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  991. chapter 40

  992. calling in the

  993. wilderness to

  994. prepare,

  995. the way for

  996. the Lord.

  997. That's me.

  998. That is my

  999. voice.

  1000. I am the

  1001. voice of one

  1002. calling in the

  1003. wilderness that

  1004. God is here.

  1005. That the God of

  1006. comfort who was

  1007. promised and

  1008. foretold in Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1009. chapter 40 is

  1010. here.

  1011. He has come.

  1012. Repent and

  1013. believe the

  1014. good news.

  1015. Repent and

  1016. receive the

  1017. comfort and the

  1018. consolation that

  1019. has taken on

  1020. flesh.

  1021. forgiveness.

  1022. In Jesus

  1023. Christ.

  1024. Jesus Christ is

  1025. God's ultimate

  1026. word of

  1027. assurance to us

  1028. about God's

  1029. forgiveness.

  1030. It is through

  1031. his finished work

  1032. on the cross

  1033. that we can know

  1034. with great

  1035. assurance, beyond

  1036. the shadow of a

  1037. doubt, that our

  1038. sins are forgiven.

  1039. God's ultimate

  1040. love of a

  1041. God's ultimate

  1042. salvation.

  1043. He is

  1044. not because of

  1045. everything in him,

  1046. because his work

  1047. was full and

  1048. final and

  1049. complete and

  1050. satisfactory in his

  1051. death on the cross

  1052. in our place.

  1053. And in Jesus, we

  1054. find God saying to

  1055. us, your

  1056. warfare is

  1057. ended.

  1058. your iniquity is

  1059. pardoned.

  1060. You have received

  1061. from the Lord's

  1062. hand a double

  1063. portion, not only

  1064. the forgiveness of

  1065. sins, but the

  1066. transfer of his

  1067. righteousness to

  1068. us, our adoption

  1069. as his sons and

  1070. daughters, our

  1071. justification, the

  1072. indwelling of the

  1073. Holy Spirit, and

  1074. all the spiritual

  1075. blessings that come

  1076. in Christ.

  1077. He is God's double

  1078. portion, his

  1079. overflowing, extravagant

  1080. grace to us.

1081. He is God's word of

  1082. assurance.

  1083. to us.

1084. And if we put our

  1085. faith in him, we

  1086. don't have to doubt

  1087. for a second that

  1088. our sins are

  1089. forgiven and that

  1090. we belong to God.

  1091. Jesus Christ is

  1092. God's word of hope.

  1093. He is God's ultimate

1094. word of hope to us

  1095. about the coming of

  1096. God's glory.

  1097. In his incarnation,

  1098. God revealed his

  1099. glory to the world.

  1100. Wherever Jesus

  1101. went, valleys were

  1102. raised up.

  1103. Mountains were brought

  1104. low.

  1105. Rough places were

  1106. smoothed.

  1107. The sick were healed.

  1108. The blind saw.

  1109. The lame walked.

  1110. Sinners repented and

  1111. received forgiveness.

  1112. Wherever Jesus goes, the

  1113. transformation of the

1114. glory of God goes too.

  1115. God's glory to God's

  1116. God's glory to the

  1117. glory of God.

1118. And the amazing hope that we

1119. have is that we can be united to Jesus' story of cosmic transformation by faith.

1120. Jesus loves to reveal his transforming glory in the wilderness and in the exile of our lives.

1121. And we're gonna hear a story about that later in the service.

1122. He can reveal his glory in the rough places of our lives and of our city even now.

1123. That is why he came.

1124. And that's why in Jesus we hear God speaking a word of comfort to us.

1125. Your story is not over.

1126. God's not done with you.

1127. And thirdly, finally, Jesus Christ is God's ultimate word of love to us about God's presence

1128. because he is the shepherd king in Isaiah 40 who has come to dwell with his people in love.

1129. And to carry them in his chest.

1130. To lead them by the hand.

1131. To bind up their wounds.

1132. And it's in Jesus that we hear God saying to us,

  1133. you are not alone.

  1134. I am with you.

  1135. You are loved.

1136. Jesus Christ is God's ultimate word of comfort to us.

  1137. He is our assurance.

  1138. He is our hope.

1139. And he is the presence of God in love.

1140. And the invitation of the season of Advent is that even though we may feel like Israel,

1141. that we are waiting in exile.

1142. In a world where we can sometimes feel far from home.

1143. In a world of sin.

1144. In a world of pain.

  1145. A world of grief.

  1146. A world of tears.

  1147. A world of loneliness.

  1148. A world of waiting.

1149. A world where it feels like consolation is never gonna come.

1150. The invitation of the season of Advent is that in that world, in this world,

1151. there is incredible comfort to be found because God came.

  1152. Behold your God.

1153. He came in Jesus Christ and took on flesh.

1154. He left all the glory and the comfort of heaven to experience the pain and the difficulty and the grief of exile with us and for us.

1155. He was exiled for us to purchase our eternal comfort.

1156. And it's in Jesus Christ that we hear God speaking to us.

1157. And so, I'm so much more in the week.

1158. I'm so much more deeply.

1159. I'm so much more in that world.

  1160. Comfort.

  1161. Comfort, my people.

  1162. I have forgiven you.

1163. Your story is not over.

  1164. You're not alone.

1165. And when we receive this word with open hearts of faith,

1166. this comfort can truly become ours.

  1167. Let's pray.

  1168. Lord Jesus Christ,

1169. bring the comfort and the consolation

1170. of your coming into our lives.

  1171. Reveal your glory.

1172. Lord, comfort us with your incredible assurance.

1173. Comfort us with your incredible hope.

1174. Comfort us with your incredible love.

1175. We pray this in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  1176. Amen.
