  1. Well, good morning, I say to you again,

  2. welcome to Church of the Advent,

  3. especially if you're joining us for the first time.

  4. We are delighted that you're here.

  5. This is a wonderful Sunday

  6. because we have an opportunity to celebrate baptism.

  7. We'll have a couple of people baptized

  8. a little bit later in the service,

  9. and that's very appropriate for this time of year.

  10. We're in the season of epiphany,

  11. and that's one of the themes of epiphany is baptism.

  12. And so I thought it would be appropriate

  13. to spend some time this morning

  14. before we actually do these baptisms

  15. to talk about baptism.

  16. It's something that I've preached on a few times,

  17. but I've never actually preached specifically

  18. on infant baptism

  19. and why we would do the practice of infant baptism.

  20. So that's what I wanna look at this morning in particular.

  21. All Christians, virtually all Christians in the world

  22. agree that we should baptize people

  23. once they come to faith in Jesus.

  24. So that's not really up for debate.

  25. But there is a disagreement

  26. over the children of believers.

  27. What should we do there?

  28. Some people believe we should baptize them,

  29. and some do not.

  30. Why would we baptize a baby

  31. before they are old enough to come to faith

  32. to choose to follow Jesus for themselves?

  33. So that's what we're gonna be talking about this morning.

  34. Now, a couple of caveats

  35. that we have to hit right up front.

  36. Caveat number one,

  37. in our church,

  38. we have people on both sides of the issue.

  39. It's one of the great things about our church,

  40. one of the things I love about our church.

  41. A lot of people in our church

  42. have not come from an Anglican background

  43. or come from a background

  44. where this was the case.

  45. And so this is an area

  46. where people in our church disagree.

  47. And this is an area

  48. where faithful Bible-believing Christians can disagree.

  49. So the good news is,

  50. everybody's welcome here.

  51. As an Anglican church,

  52. infant baptism is normative for us.

  53. But there is freedom for those who disagree.

  54. So ultimately, we encourage parents,

  55. we leave it up to parents

  56. to decide before the Lord

  57. how to raise their children in the faith

  58. and the role that baptism plays.

  59. But I do think that this is something

  60. that we all need to understand.

  61. And there are probably people here

  62. who have always agreed with infant baptism

  63. but never really understood why.

  64. Or maybe they agree with it for the wrong reasons.

  65. And so I think it's important to spend time on it.

  66. That's caveat number one.

  67. Caveat number two,

  68. this sounds like a super niche topic

  69. that only applies to Christian parents of kids.

  70. It is, in a sense.

  71. But it's also something that I think,

  72. hopefully you will agree

  73. after we spend some time on it,

  74. applies to every single person in this room.

  75. And in fact, it's something that applies

  76. to every single person in the world.

  77. Because the fact is,

  78. if you understand baptism,

  79. you begin to understand the heart of God.

  80. The purpose of baptism is to put on display

  81. for the world to see the very heart of God.

  82. The fact that God loves you

  83. and the lengths to which God will go

  84. that you might belong to him

  85. as a member of his family.

  86. And so my hope is that

  87. wherever you are in your journey,

  88. if you're a Christian parent

  89. about to have a baby

  90. trying to figure out what to do,

  91. or if you're somebody

  92. who just walked in off the street

  93. and you're not a Christian

  94. and you're like,

  95. I think I picked the wrong Sunday.

  96. Regardless of where you are,

  97. my hope and prayer is that this,

  98. by the end,

  99. you will see why this is relevant to all of us.

  100. So what we're gonna look at,

  101. essentially, in a nutshell,

  102. is that all of this is about a promise.

  103. It's about a promise.

  104. It's about a promise given by God to Abraham,

  105. signified in Israel by circumcision,

  106. and signified in the church by baptism.

  107. Let's pray.

  108. Lord, we thank you for your word

  109. and as always,

  110. we come with our own hopes and expectations,

  111. needs and distractions.

  112. If our hope only rests in our wisdom

  113. and our strategy

  114. and our highest thoughts,

  115. then Lord, we are lost.

  116. But our hope rests in the truth

  117. that we just celebrated at Christmas,

  118. that you are Emmanuel.

  119. You're the God who is with us,

  120. a God who speaks to us,

  121. a God whose word is living and active,

  122. a God who desires to renew our hearts.

  123. And we pray that through your word this morning,

  124. you would do what only you can do.

  125. In the power of your spirit,

  126. in the name of Jesus, amen.

  127. All right, so the first piece of this

  128. is to understand

  129. that all of this begins with a promise

  130. that is given by God to Abraham.

  131. In order to understand baptism,

  132. we have to understand the origins

  133. of the gospel itself,

  134. which is the core hope of Christianity

  135. and the thing that really sets Christianity apart

  136. from all of the other religions and philosophies,

  137. ancient and modern,

  138. that attempt to offer hope to the world.

  139. Because other religions say

  140. that the only way to have a relationship with God,

  141. the only way to gain the blessing of God,

  142. is to earn it.

  143. You have to prove through your obedience

  144. and your devotion

  145. that you are worthy of the blessing of the divine.

  146. Only the best get blessed.

  147. That's the message.

  148. But in the book of Genesis,

  149. we meet a man named Abram.

  150. And Abram is just like us.

  151. He's flawed.

  152. He's a sinner.

  153. He messes up all the time.

  154. And yet he's able to have the kind of relationship

  155. with God that we all want.

  156. He is loved by God.

  157. He is extraordinarily blessed by God.

  158. And it raises the question of,

  159. how is such a thing possible

  160. for such an obviously flawed individual?

  161. And the answer is found in Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  162. God comes to Abram

  163. and he announces his plan

  164. to redeem and restore the world

  165. through Abram's offspring.

  166. I'm gonna build a community

  167. as numerous as the stars.

  168. And in Genesis 15 verse six,

  169. it says this,

  170. and Abram believed the Lord

  171. and he counted it to him as righteousness.

  172. And we cannot overestimate

  173. the world-changing importance

  174. of this statement.

  175. God credits Abram's faith to him

  176. as righteousness.

  177. In other words, God says this,

  178. even though that you're sinful

  179. and even though nothing that you do

  180. will ever make up for the degree

  181. to which you have rebelled against me

  182. and rejected me,

  183. you'll never make up for that.

  184. Even still,

  185. if you're willing to trust me,

  186. if you're willing to trust my promises

  187. and believe them,

  188. then I will cover your sin

  189. and I will welcome you

  190. into relationship with me

  191. and I will give you all of the privileges

  192. that would come with being

  193. a fully righteous person.

  194. I will treat you as though you were righteous.

  195. And we say,

  196. well how could God just overlook sin?

  197. We'll get there.

  198. So God offers Abram a relationship

  199. based on faith,

  200. not good works,

  201. and he says,

  202. I will,

  203. if you have faith in me,

  204. I will credit this to you

  205. as righteousness.

  206. So this is now,

  207. for the first time in the world,

  208. a relationship with God

  209. that nobody has ever seen before.

  210. You mean,

  211. I don't have to earn it

  212. through obedience and devotion,

  213. but God wants your devotion.

  214. God delights in your good works.

  215. But your relationship

  216. is now based on your faith in him.

  217. It changes everything.

  218. But it does raise a question.

  219. Is this something

  220. that only applies to Abram?

  221. Or is this something

  222. that God intends to do

  223. for other people?

  224. And at this point in the story,

  225. we don't know yet.

  226. What we then see

  227. is that God makes

  228. an eternal promise

  229. to Abram

  230. that he will do this

  231. for anyone

  232. and everyone

  233. who comes to him in faith.

  234. In Genesis chapter 17,

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  235. two chapters later,

  236. God makes a covenant,

  237. which is a formal agreement

  238. with Abram.

  239. And he essentially says this,

  240. for all eternity,

  241. from here forward

  242. for all eternity,

  243. when the conditions

  244. of the covenant are met,

  245. i.e. when you have faith in me,

  246. that's your end of the covenant,

  247. when the conditions

  248. of the covenant are met,

  249. meaning faith,

  250. God promises

  251. that he will forgive their sin

  252. and credit their faith

  253. to them as righteousness.

  254. So God is saying,

  255. my plan to renew

  256. and restore the world

  257. is going to be built

  258. on this kind of relationship.

  259. Your side of the covenant

  260. is to believe in me,

  261. to have faith in me,

  262. and I will forgive

  263. and welcome you

  264. into my family.

  265. And then God renames him Abraham

  266. because he says,

  267. as a result of this,

  268. I've made you the father

  269. of a multitude of nations.

  270. Not just your descendants,

  271. but a multitude of nations

  272. are going to be blessed by this.

  273. Because God's going to do it

  274. not just for the blood relatives,

  275. but for any foreigner

  276. who wants to have

  277. this kind of relationship

  278. with God,

  279. any non-Jewish person,

  280. this is going to be open

  281. to them as well.

  282. And then,

  283. God gives

  284. an outward,

  285. invisible sign

  286. of this promise.

  287. How are people

  288. going to know this?

  289. How are they going to remember it?

  290. What's the way

  291. that we're going to

  292. stay focused

  293. on this promise?

  294. God says,

  295. I'm going to give you

  296. a visible mark.

  297. I'm going to seal

  298. this promise

  299. so that you'll always know

  300. that I keep my word.

  301. And he gives them

  302. the symbol,

  303. the sign of circumcision.

  304. And we say,

  305. well, why circumcision?

  306. That sounds kind of odd.

  307. It's a bit barbaric.

  308. It is barbaric.

  309. In circumcision,

  310. there is a shedding of blood.

  311. Some blood is shed.

  312. And this points forward

  313. 2,000 years into the future

  314. when Jesus Christ would come

  315. and when Jesus would shed

  316. his blood on the cross,

  317. which is infinitely more barbaric,

  318. in order to pay the price for sin.

  319. And you say,

  320. well, that's how God is able

  321. to cover and forgive

  322. the sin of someone like Abraham.

  323. Because God knows

  324. that one day

  325. he's going to send

  326. his own son

  327. to pay the price

  328. for all of that sin.

  329. And so,

  330. even though they didn't know it

  331. at the time,

  332. those who were circumcised

  333. for 2,000 years,

  334. they were ultimately

  335. putting their faith in Jesus.

  336. They didn't know it.

  337. As I shed a little bit of blood,

  338. I'm putting my faith

  339. in the ultimate shedding of blood.

  340. So God tells Abraham

  341. to be circumcised

  342. and to circumcise

  343. his entire household.

  344. Every male in Abraham's house

  345. and in every future generation.

  346. So Abraham gets circumcised.

  347. He's 99.

  348. That's one of the reasons

  349. we recommend doing it

  350. a lot earlier.

  351. He's 99.

  352. And he circumcises his son Isaac

  353. when he's 8 days old.

  354. And again, we ask,

  355. well, so why does he circumcise Isaac

  356. when he's only 8 days old?

  357. He can't possibly understand

  358. the shedding of blood

  359. and everything we just said.

  360. When Abraham circumcised Isaac,

  361. he's saying this to him.

  362. I'm gonna raise you

  363. and I'm gonna teach you

  364. all about the love

  365. and the truth of God.

  366. And God has promised

  367. to do for you, Isaac,

  368. what he has done for me.

  369. When you come to faith,

  370. God has promised

  371. that he's going to forgive your sin

  372. and he's gonna credit your faith

  373. to you as righteousness

  374. just like he did for me.

  375. And he's gonna adopt you

  376. and make you his son

  377. just like he did for me.

  378. And how are you going to know this,

  379. Isaac, as you grow up?

  380. Your circumcision is a sign

  381. and a seal of God's promise.

  382. So don't just take my word for it.

  383. God wanted you to have this sign

  384. as a guarantee

  385. that God will do this for you

  386. when you come to faith.

  387. Right, so for 2,000 years,

  388. the sign of the covenant

  389. was given to believing adults

  390. and to their children,

  391. the children of believing parents.

  392. Did this save Isaac?

  393. No.

  394. No.

  395. Did this guarantee

  396. that Isaac would be saved?

  397. No.

  398. It is simply God's promise

  399. that if and when Isaac comes to faith,

  400. God promises that he will do for him

  401. what he did for Abraham.

  402. I will forgive your sin

  403. and I will welcome you into relationship

  404. on the basis of your faith alone.

  405. That's the promise.

  406. So circumcision was a visible sign

  407. given to the people of Israel

  408. of God's pledge

  409. to forgive the sins of the people

  410. who put their faith in him.

  411. And we say,

  412. okay, well that's great,

  413. nice Old Testament lesson.

  414. What does that have to do

  415. with today and the church?

  416. After 2,000 years of waiting,

  417. Jesus Christ comes into the world.

  418. And he comes as a part of,

  419. he enters into a family

  420. descended from the line of Abraham.

  421. Abraham, and he comes to fulfill everything

  422. that God had spoken to Abraham,

  423. everything that had been declared.

  424. And he sheds his blood,

  425. and he brings God's blessing to the nations.

  426. And then after his death and resurrection,

  427. Jesus stands with his disciples

  428. before his ascension,

  429. and he gives them their final commissioning.

  430. Here's your life mission.

  431. All authority in heaven and on earth

  432. has been given to me,

  433. Jesus says.

  434. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  435. baptizing them

  436. in the name of the Father

  437. and of the Son

  438. and of the Holy Spirit,

  439. teaching them to observe

  440. all that I have commanded you.

  441. And behold, I'm with you

  442. to the end of the age.

  443. And not long after,

  444. after Jesus then ascends,

  445. the Holy Spirit comes,

  446. and there's a massive outpouring

  447. of God's blessing.

  448. And the apostle Peter

  449. stands up in the power of the Holy Spirit,

  450. and he preaches to the multitudes,

  451. and he tells the story of Jesus.

  452. And they're all cut to the heart,

  453. and they say,

  454. what should we do?

  455. What do we do?

  456. And for the most part,

  457. these are circumcised Jews

  458. from various places.

  459. And they say,

  460. what should we do?

  461. And Peter says this,

  462. repent and be baptized,

  463. every one of you,

  464. in the name of Jesus Christ,

  465. for the forgiveness of your sins,

  466. and you will receive

  467. the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  468. Be baptized in the name of Jesus

  469. for the forgiveness of sins.

  470. And the same promise

  471. that God made to Abraham

  472. is extended to the church.

  473. They say, okay,

  474. repent and be baptized.

  475. Why should we be baptized?

  476. Here's what Peter says.

  477. For the promise

  478. is for you,

  479. and for your children,

  480. and for all who are far off,

  481. everyone whom the Lord,

  482. our God,

  483. calls to himself.

  484. The same promise

  485. that God made to Abraham,

  486. that God made to Isaac,

  487. that God made to all

  488. of those generations of families,

  489. all for 2,000 years,

  490. Peter then says,

  491. that promise is for you,

  492. and it's for your children,

  493. and it's for anyone

  494. that the Lord would call to himself.

  495. But the sign of the promise

  496. will no longer be circumcision.

  497. From the birth of the church on,

  498. there is a new sign.

  499. Same promise,

  500. new sign.

  501. The sign of the promise

  502. will no longer be circumcision.

  503. From now on,

  504. baptism will be the sign

  505. of God's promise.

  506. After Jesus comes,

  507. baptism takes the place

  508. of circumcision

  509. as the sign of God's promise.

  510. Same promise,

  511. new sign.

  512. So believing parents

  513. were now called

  514. to put the mark

  515. of God's pledge

  516. on their children,

  517. not in the form of circumcision,

  518. but now in the form of baptism.

  519. Does it save them?

  520. No.

  521. Does it guarantee

  522. their salvation?

  523. No.

  524. What does it do?

  525. The same thing

  526. that it's done

  527. for 2,000 years.

  528. It's a mark

  529. of God's pledge

  530. that when that child

  531. comes to faith,

  532. God will forgive their sin

  533. and claim them as his own,

  534. and they will receive

  535. all of the blessings

  536. of the covenant.

  537. It's a sign

  538. of God's promise.

  539. And you say,

  540. well, are we sure?

  541. What's the connection

  542. between circumcision

  543. and baptism?

  544. How do we know?

  545. This is something

  546. that Paul,

  547. the Apostle Paul,

  548. explicitly addresses

  549. in Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  550. He's writing to Christians

  551. who have been baptized,

  552. but they've not been circumcised.

  553. And there's a big question

  554. in the church.

  555. Well, should we also

  556. get circumcised?

  557. And if you really mean it,

  558. should you get both?

  559. Should you be circumcised

  560. and then baptized?

  561. And how does that work?

  562. And here's how

  563. the Apostle Paul answers this.

  564. He says,

  565. you don't need

  566. to get circumcised.

  567. Why not?

  568. Because you're already circumcised.

  569. You're already circumcised.

  570. And they're like,

  571. I'm pretty sure I'm not.

  572. And he says,

  573. no,

  574. you bear the mark

  575. of God's promise

  576. through your baptism.

  577. You've been circumcised

  578. with a circumcision

  579. made without hands

  580. in your baptism.

  581. And you say,

  582. well,

  583. why would God change the mark?

  584. Why a new sign?

  585. Well,

  586. because Jesus has come.

  587. Right?

  588. For 2,000 years,

  589. circumcision looked forward

  590. to what would need to happen

  591. as we shed blood.

  592. We know that one day

  593. blood will need to be shed

  594. in an ultimate sense

  595. for all of the world.

  596. So we're looking forward.

  597. Right?

  598. Baptism looks back

  599. and it says,

  600. this is the result

  601. of the fact

  602. that Jesus' blood was shed.

  603. The focus is not on the fact

  604. that it's going to happen.

  605. The focus is on

  606. the effects of that.

  607. The washing away of sin

  608. through the shedding

  609. of Jesus' blood.

  610. Right?

  611. The death to the old life

  612. and the sin nature

  613. and the raising to life again

  614. of people in Christ

  615. and the filling

  616. of the Holy Spirit,

  617. the fulfilling

  618. of all of the covenant blessings.

  619. So circumcision looked forward,

  620. baptism looks back

  621. and says,

  622. because of this,

  623. all of these blessings

  624. are now ours

  625. to enjoy.

  626. So to pull all of this together,

  627. all of this,

  628. as I said at the beginning,

  629. is about God's promise

  630. that when someone expresses faith,

  631. he will forgive sin

  632. and claim them as his own.

  633. This is a promise

  634. that was given to Abraham.

  635. It's signified in Israel

  636. by circumcision

  637. and it is now signified

  638. in the church by baptism.

  639. Same promise,

  640. new sign.

  641. Now I know some people hear this

  642. and very understandably,

  643. people say,

  644. well, you know,

  645. if this is true,

  646. then why do we not have

  647. any examples

  648. of an infant being baptized

  649. in the New Testament?

  650. And I would say,

  651. yeah, while it's true

  652. that there's no specific reference

  653. to an infant being baptized,

  654. curiously,

  655. every single adult baptism

  656. that is described

  657. in the New Testament

  658. explicitly states

  659. that they were baptized

  660. along with their entire household.

  661. So somebody comes to faith,

  662. Lydia,

  663. or Cornelius,

  664. or Crispus,

  665. or the Philippian jailer,

  666. they come to faith

  667. and it says immediately

  668. they were baptized

  669. along with their entire household.

  670. In each case,

  671. the adult comes to faith

  672. and they're baptized

  673. along with everybody

  674. who lives in their home.

  675. The only exception to this

  676. is, of course,

  677. the Ethiopian eunuch

  678. who, for obvious reasons,

  679. does not have a household,

  680. does not have a wife

  681. or children

  682. because he's a eunuch.

  683. Another question

  684. that people will ask,

  685. and again,

  686. very honest question,

  687. where's the verse

  688. in the Bible

  689. that tells us

  690. we should baptize babies?

  691. And I would say

  692. there's not one.

  693. There's not an explicit verse

  694. that says,

  695. you shall do this.

  696. But I would also say this,

  697. for 2,000 years,

  698. God's people

  699. put the mark

  700. of God's promise

  701. on their children.

  702. For 2,000 years,

  703. they put the mark

  704. of his promise

  705. on their children.

  706. And then when we look

  707. at church history,

  708. the early church fathers

  709. write about infant baptism

  710. with the assumption

  711. that it is a normative practice.

  712. Origen actually writes explicitly

  713. that the church received

  714. from the apostles

  715. the tradition

  716. of giving baptism

  717. to infants.

  718. We have a liturgy,

  719. a baptismal rite

  720. from the second century

  721. that includes

  722. and assumes

  723. the inclusion

  724. of children

  725. and infants

  726. in the rite.

  727. And then we see

  728. that infant baptism

  729. is universally practiced

  730. everywhere in the church

  731. through all of church history

  732. up until after

  733. the Protestant Reformation.

  734. The magisterial reformers

  735. not only upheld it,

  736. but they actually

  737. defended infant baptism

  738. with a kind of

  739. renewed biblical vigor.

  740. So in light of all of that,

  741. we would actually ask

  742. the opposite question.

  743. You know,

  744. I would tend to think,

  745. where is the verse

  746. that tells us

  747. we should not

  748. baptize infants.

  749. The theological position

  750. that rejects infant baptism

  751. is called

  752. credo-baptism.

  753. And it's the idea

  754. that you should only

  755. baptize people

  756. after they come to faith.

  757. And this arose

  758. in the 17th century

  759. as a part of

  760. the English Reformation.

  761. This is where

  762. the origins

  763. of this theology

  764. really are found.

  765. And this led

  766. to the formation

  767. of certain denominations

  768. that remain

  769. in our society today

  770. and societies

  771. all around the world.

  772. And again,

  773. I want to say,

  774. I've sort of made

  775. the argument for you,

  776. but I just want to reaffirm

  777. to all the brothers

  778. and sisters

  779. who hold to this position,

  780. tremendous respect

  781. for you

  782. and for this position.

  783. And this is an area

  784. where faithful Christians

  785. can disagree.

  786. And in our church,

  787. you're free

  788. to hold either view

  789. and we celebrate both.

  790. because regardless

  791. of your position on this,

  792. we all share

  793. the same motivation.

  794. We take very seriously

  795. our commitment

  796. to raise children

  797. to know the love of Jesus

  798. and to follow Him faithfully.

  799. That is the thing

  800. that we all agree on.

  801. Right?

  802. And either view

  803. can become distorted

  804. if we're not very careful.

  805. Right?

  806. For people who believe

  807. in the baptism of infants,

  808. paedo-baptists,

  809. there's a danger

  810. for people

  811. who practice infant baptism

  812. to make the mistake

  813. of believing

  814. that baptism

  815. saves our children,

  816. that there is something

  817. about the water

  818. that saves them.

  819. Or to make the mistake

  820. of believing

  821. that because they've been baptized,

  822. it guarantees their salvation

  823. at some point.

  824. This is not only not

  825. seen at all

  826. in Scripture,

  827. but it can actually lead

  828. to a very laissez-faire attitude

  829. when it comes

  830. to raising

  831. our children

  832. in the faith.

  833. It becomes a kind

  834. of box that we check.

  835. And that's incredibly dangerous.

  836. It's dangerous

  837. for the spiritual

  838. well-being

  839. of our children.

  840. The responsibility

  841. of parents

  842. is crucial

  843. for us

  844. to have a right

  845. understanding

  846. of baptism.

  847. The Bible teaches

  848. that God works

  849. through believing parents

  850. to bring children

  851. to faith.

  852. 1 Corinthians 7

  853. has always mystified me.

  854. Paul is writing,

  855. imagine a scenario

  856. where you have

  857. a single parent

  858. who has come to faith.

  859. Their spouse

  860. is an unbeliever

  861. and they're looking

  862. at their young baby

  863. and they're thinking,

  864. what is possibly

  865. going to happen?

  866. What hope do I have?

  867. I'm the only Christian

  868. in my household.

  869. So Paul writes

  870. to those people

  871. and he says this,

  872. because of your faith,

  873. your children

  874. are holy.

  875. Does he mean

  876. they're saved?

  877. No,

  878. but what does he mean?

  879. They are set apart.

  880. They are to be treated

  881. as members

  882. of the covenant community.

  883. Your faith

  884. covers them.

  885. Right?

  886. Your faith

  887. covers,

  888. and the sanctifying work

  889. that God is doing

  890. in your life

  891. is flowing

  892. into their lives.

  893. So he's saying,

  894. God will work

  895. in their lives

  896. through your faith.

  897. And your faith

  898. will cover them

  899. until they're old enough

  900. to express faith

  901. for themselves.

  902. And so when an infant

  903. is baptized,

  904. the parents

  905. do two things.

  906. And they're both,

  907. you're going to see this

  908. in just a moment.

  909. First,

  910. they make the baptismal vows

  911. on behalf

  912. of their children

  913. because their faith

  914. covers their children.

  915. As the Apostle Paul writes.

  916. And then,

  917. they promise

  918. to teach the faith

  919. to their children,

  920. to devote themselves

  921. to the formation

  922. of their children

  923. until the child

  924. is able to embrace

  925. the faith for themselves.

  926. And only then

  927. are they saved.

  928. And there's a prayer

  929. in the liturgy

  930. where we say,

  931. we can only use water.

  932. God has to baptize

  933. with the Holy Spirit.

  934. Only God can bring

  935. this child

  936. to saving faith.

  937. And that's what

  938. we pray for.

  939. Right?

  940. So the role of parents

  941. is crucial.

  942. There's likewise

  943. some dangers

  944. that come with people

  945. who hold to a

  946. believers-only

  947. baptism position

  948. or what we would call

  949. credo-baptists.

  950. There's a danger

  951. in this view,

  952. a danger of distortion.

  953. It doesn't apply

  954. to everybody,

  955. but for some people,

  956. there can be

  957. an emphasizing

  958. of the experience

  959. of the baptism,

  960. of focusing on

  961. a desire for the child

  962. to have the experience

  963. and the memory

  964. of it.

  965. There can also be

  966. a kind of

  967. focusing on

  968. the fact that

  969. baptism,

  970. because it's something

  971. that we do

  972. after we come to faith,

  973. then the focus

  974. of baptism

  975. really becomes

  976. our individual choice

  977. and commitment

  978. to God.

  979. It's ultimately

  980. a way for us

  981. to pledge ourselves

  982. to God.

  983. And I've seen

  984. the way this can

  985. sometimes lead

  986. to fear

  987. and anxiety.

  988. Do I really mean it?

  989. You know,

  990. when I got baptized

  991. at summer camp

  992. as a sixth grader,

  993. I really felt it.

  994. But now,

  995. as a sophomore

  996. in college,

  997. I'm really struggling.

  998. And I don't know

  999. if I mean it anymore.

  1000. And what does that

  1001. mean for me?

1002. Do I need to get

  1003. baptized again?

  1004. And so some people

  1005. over the course

  1006. of their lives

  1007. will periodically

  1008. rededicate themselves

  1009. to God

  1010. because they feel

  1011. like they have

  1012. fallen away,

  1013. that they used

  1014. to mean it,

  1015. but they're not sure

  1016. what they think anymore.

  1017. And their Christian life

  1018. becomes a place

  1019. of anxiety.

  1020. Their baptism

  1021. becomes a symbol

  1022. of that anxiety

  1023. and fear

  1024. of how much

  1025. can I really

  1026. pledge myself

  1027. to God.

  1028. And I would say

  1029. if we understand

  1030. what we've seen

  1031. here this morning,

  1032. baptism is not

  1033. ultimately about

  1034. the promises

  1035. that we make

  1036. to God.

  1037. And that's good news

  1038. because we tend

  1039. to be really good

  1040. at breaking promises.

  1041. Baptism is not

  1042. about the promises

  1043. that we make

  1044. to God.

  1045. Baptism is about

  1046. the promises

  1047. that God

  1048. makes to us.

  1049. and God

  1050. never breaks

  1051. his promises

  1052. ever.

  1053. So for a child

  1054. who has been

  1055. baptized as an infant,

  1056. parents may be sad

  1057. but they may say

  1058. well they're never

  1059. going to remember

  1060. this.

  1061. They may not remember

  1062. when it happened

  1063. but they are going

  1064. to grow up

  1065. knowing that God

  1066. has put his mark

  1067. on them.

  1068. That God

  1069. has already

  1070. made a promise

  1071. to them before

  1072. they were even

  1073. conscious.

  1074. He's already

  1075. made a promise

  1076. to them

  1077. that he stands

  1078. ready to receive

  1079. them.

  1080. And so every time

  1081. children are called

  1082. to remember

  1083. their baptisms

  1084. what are they

  1085. remembering?

  1086. They're remembering

  1087. the fact that

  1088. God's posture

  1089. toward them

  1090. is this.

  1091. I'm ready

  1092. to receive you.

  1093. All you have

  1094. to do is ask

  1095. and I will wrap

  1096. my arms around you

  1097. and there's nothing

  1098. that you can do

  1099. that will put

  1100. that in jeopardy

  1101. because I've

  1102. already promised

  1103. that all you have

  1104. to do is come

  1105. to me and ask

  1106. and you're mine.

  1107. And I think

  1108. that's incredibly

  1109. powerful

  1110. for our children

  1111. to be reminded

  1112. of again

  1113. and again

  1114. and again.

  1115. Every time we do

  1116. a baptism

  1117. we encourage

  1118. all parents

  1119. of baptized kids

  1120. help them

  1121. remember their

  1122. baptism.

  1123. Tell them the

  1124. story of it.

  1125. Light the candle

  1126. that we give you

  1127. and tell them

  1128. all the details

  1129. of who was there

  1130. and what was it

  1131. like

  1132. and how did

  1133. you feel

  1134. and did you cry

  1135. and knock the

  1136. water over

  1137. and how

  1138. whatever happened

  1139. remind them

  1140. that story

  1141. and remind them

  1142. of God's promise.

  1143. The point

  1144. that I want

  1145. to leave

  1146. everybody with

  1147. I told you

  1148. if you're here

  1149. you walked in

  1150. off the street

  1151. you think

  1152. you made

  1153. a huge mistake

  1154. there's going

  1155. to be something

  1156. here for you.

  1157. Here's the point.

  1158. This applies

  1159. to everyone

  1160. here.

  1161. To understand

  1162. baptism

  1163. is to understand

  1164. the very heart

  1165. of God.

  1166. We can often

  1167. think that God

  1168. is sort of

  1169. standing back

  1170. vaguely

  1171. or even

  1172. significantly

  1173. disappointed in us

1174. I gave you so much

  1175. and look what

  1176. you've done

  1177. with it

  1178. and that God

  1179. is kind of

  1180. waiting for us

  1181. to get it right

  1182. waiting for us

  1183. to get our act

  1184. together

  1185. waiting for us

  1186. to finally get

  1187. serious about our

  1188. faith

  1189. waiting for us

  1190. to finally

  1191. stop doing

  1192. all that junk

  1193. that is tearing

  1194. us down

  1195. and that God

  1196. is just kind

  1197. of waiting

  1198. kind of like

  1199. a frustrated

  1200. disappointed

  1201. parent

  1202. about ready

  1203. to give up

  1204. or maybe you

  1205. think that God

  1206. has completely

  1207. given up

  1208. baptism is

  1209. meant to be

  1210. a visible sign

  1211. and witness

  1212. to the world

  1213. of God's heart

  1214. it is meant

  1215. to be a public

  1216. symbol

  1217. it's not just

  1218. for our assurance

  1219. it's something

  1220. that puts the

  1221. gospel on display

  1222. for the world

  1223. to see

  1224. that God

  1225. wants you

  1226. to come to him

  1227. in faith

  1228. that God

  1229. stands ready

  1230. to receive you

  1231. with open arms

  1232. that there's

  1233. nothing that can

  1234. stand in the way

  1235. of that

  1236. if you're willing

  1237. to put your faith

  1238. in him

  1239. you can

  1240. and will

  1241. belong to him

  1242. for all eternity

  1243. it's an invitation

  1244. to the world

  1245. it's an invitation

  1246. that we have

  1247. the opportunity

  1248. to respond to

  1249. even in this

  1250. very moment

  1251. and I pray

  1252. that some of you

  1253. who are feeling

  1254. distant and

  1255. disconnected from God

  1256. will do just that

  1257. let's pray

  1258. Lord we thank you

  1259. for your grace

  1260. may your grace

  1261. and your promises

  1262. pervade our time

  1263. here

  1264. may your words

  1265. that are true

  1266. sink deeply

  1267. into our hearts

  1268. as we remember

  1269. our own baptism

  1270. and as we celebrate

  1271. the baptisms

  1272. this morning

  1273. use these

  1274. as a sign

  1275. of assurance

  1276. assure us

  1277. of your love

  1278. for us

  1279. and that we belong

  1280. to you

  1281. those of us

  1282. who are struggling

  1283. who are deconstructing

  1284. who are filled

  1285. with doubt

  1286. who are hopeless

  1287. or filled with despair

  1288. use baptism

  1289. to shore us

  1290. up

  1291. that it's okay

  1292. to fall apart

  1293. because we

  1294. are held firmly

  1295. by your grasp

  1296. and you'll never

  1297. let us go

  1298. we pray this

  1299. in your son's

  1300. holy name

  1301. amen

  1302. to you

  1303. you
