  1. Good morning, and welcome to Church of the Advent.

  2. My name's Jeff, and I'm one of the pastors here.

  3. If you're new or this is your first time,

  4. thanks for joining us.

  5. I would love to meet you at the front steps

  6. after the service.

  7. Before we get to the sermon this morning,

  8. we just want to create some space briefly this morning

  9. to pray about the events of last weekend,

  10. specifically the attempted assassination of President Trump.

  11. We didn't get, because of the timing,

  12. we didn't get a chance to pray about this

  13. in the worship service last Sunday,

  14. but we wanted to pray about it this Sunday.

  15. Of course, we always grieve and lament any act of violence

  16. that brings about injury or loss of life

  17. of people made in the image of God.

  18. But the reason why we want to pray about it this morning

  19. is we recognize that many of us might be feeling

  20. a particular kind of anxiety or dread

  21. with this particular event,

  22. wondering about what comes next in our national life,

  23. knowing that this was committed against a president

  24. and all of the implications that follow that

  25. in the midst of what is already an extremely heated

  26. and divided political moment in our country.

  27. So we just want to take a couple moments

  28. and do what the church does best

  29. and take a couple minutes to pray for our nation,

  30. for our church, and our world.

  31. So join me in prayer together.

  32. Amen.

  33. Lord, first we grieve and lament this act of violence

  34. and the loss of life and injury that occurred.

  35. Every person is first and foremost made in your image,

  36. regardless of their title or position.

  37. And we mourn whenever that image is threatened,

  38. and we know that you mourn as well.

  39. We pray for comfort for those grieving the loss of a loved one,

  40. and we pray for healing for all those who were injured in body or mind,

  41. including President Trump.

  42. We pray for our country as a whole,

  43. that you would preserve our common life together as a nation

  44. and sustain us in peace.

  45. We pray that this act would not beget any further acts of violence,

  46. but rather we pray that it would lead to a humbler discourse in our politics,

  47. a more gracious tone in our debates,

  48. and a more generous spirit toward those with whom we disagree.

  49. We pray this especially for those who speak publicly

  50. or hold elected office,

  51. including President Biden,

  52. Mayor Bowser,

  53. the D.C. City Council,

  54. and all those who represent us and serve us in public office.

  55. Give them courage to live lives of moral character,

  56. even when it's inconvenient.

  57. And give them wisdom to lead in the complexity of this moment

  58. in ways that bear the fruit of unity,

  59. peace,

  60. virtue,

  61. and the common good.

  62. We also pray for our church

  63. using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

  64. Increase, O God,

  65. the spirit of neighborliness among us,

  66. that in peril we may uphold one another,

  67. in suffering tend towards one another,

  68. and in homelessness, loneliness, or exile

  69. befriend one another.

  70. Grant us brave and enduring hearts

  71. that we may strengthen one another

  72. until the disciplines and testing of these days are ended

  73. and you again give peace in our time

  74. through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  75. Amen.

  76. Amen.

  77. Amen.

  78. And I can think of few things

  79. to transition to

  80. and to talk about next

  81. than baptism.

  82. In a moment,

  83. we are gonna have the joy

  84. and opportunity

  85. to celebrate

  86. the sacrament of baptism

  87. and to hear the story

  88. of a changed life,

  89. of God's power

  90. to save

  91. and to redeem

  92. and to transform.

  93. And so,

  94. we thought that on a day

  95. when we're celebrating

  96. a baptism,

  97. we would reflect together

  98. for a few minutes

  99. on God's word

  100. and what God's word

  101. has to teach us

  102. about baptism

  103. and what it means for our lives.

  104. Maybe you're here this morning

  105. and you're not a Christian

  106. or you haven't been baptized

  107. or you're still trying to figure out

  108. what you believe.

  109. I hope that this can bring some clarity

  110. this morning on what baptism is

  111. and what it means

  112. and what is offered to you

  113. should you choose to respond

  114. to the good news

  115. about Jesus Christ.

  116. Maybe perhaps you've been following Jesus

  117. for a long time.

  118. I hope that this is

  119. an encouraging reminder

  120. about the significance

  121. of your own baptism

  122. and how it continues

  123. to shape our discipleship

  124. to Jesus

  125. and our life together

  126. as a church.

  127. So we're gonna briefly look

  128. at a couple things

  129. about baptism.

  130. We're gonna look

  131. at the story of baptism

  132. and we're gonna look

  133. at the meaning of baptism

  134. and look at what baptism is

  135. and why we practice it.

  136. So first of all,

  137. the story of baptism.

  138. The story of baptism.

  139. The easiest answer

  140. to why we do this thing

  141. called baptism

  142. is that because Jesus

  143. commanded us to.

  144. In Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  145. the Great Commission,

  146. he says,

  147. all authority in heaven

  148. and on earth

  149. has been given to me.

  150. Go therefore

  151. and make disciples

  152. of all nations,

  153. baptizing them

  154. in the name of the Father,

  155. the Son,

  156. and the Holy Spirit.

  157. And on one hand,

  158. this would be sufficient.

  159. If the Lord Jesus

  160. has commanded us

  161. to do something,

  162. then we should obey

  163. and follow him.

  164. But of course,

  165. Jesus is not speaking

  166. in a vacuum here.

  167. There's a background.

  168. There's a greater story

  169. behind this command

  170. and there is a greater story

  171. behind baptism.

  172. And it's the story

  173. of God's covenant relationship

  174. with his people.

  175. God's covenant relationship

  176. with his people.

  177. A covenant

  178. is that special

  179. kind of relationship

  180. where people

  181. willingly bond

  182. themselves to one another,

  183. bind themselves

  184. to one another

  185. in a sacred bond

  186. of love

  187. and trust

  188. and obedience.

  189. And the thing

  190. about covenant relationships

  191. is that covenant relationships

  192. always involve

  193. a covenant promise

  194. and a covenant sign.

  195. A covenant promise

  196. and a covenant sign.

  197. So marriage,

  198. for example,

  199. is an example

  200. of a kind of human

  201. covenant relationship.

  202. There are covenant promises,

  203. the vows that husband

  204. and wife make to each other

  205. and then there's

  206. a covenant sign,

  207. normally rings.

  208. And we see

  209. throughout scripture

  210. that the story

  211. of redemption

  212. is a covenantal story.

  213. And you can only

  214. really understand baptism

  215. through that covenantal story.

  216. It's a story

  217. that begins

  218. all the way back

  219. with Abraham

  220. in the book of Genesis.

  221. After Genesis 3,

  222. when things go wrong

  223. with the rebellion

  224. and the fall of humanity

  225. in the garden,

  226. there's this question

  227. looming in the background

  228. from Genesis 3

  229. to Genesis 12.

  230. And it's this,

  231. how is God going

  232. to restore his creation

  233. back to its original goodness?

  234. And so,

  235. beginning in Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  236. through Genesis chapter 17,

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  237. God begins

  238. to answer this question

  239. in the story of Abraham.

  240. And he begins

  241. to answer this question

  242. by giving Abraham

  243. a promise,

  244. a covenant,

  245. and a covenant sign.

  246. A promise,

  247. a covenant,

  248. and a covenant sign.

  249. In Genesis 12,

  250. God gives Abraham

  251. a gracious promise

  252. that through Abraham's family,

  253. he is going to bless

  254. all the nations

  255. of the earth.

  256. That though all people

  257. are alienated from God

  258. and that creation

  259. is fallen and broken,

  260. God is committed

  261. to bringing his salvation

  262. and his blessing

  263. to every nation,

  264. all of creation.

  265. It's a gracious promise.

  266. And then in Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  267. God makes a covenant

  268. that confirms this promise

  269. to Abraham.

  270. And if you have a chance

  271. to read it later this afternoon,

  272. Genesis 15,

  273. or if you've read it before,

  274. is this strange to us,

  275. kind of strange to modern ears,

  276. but this beautiful story

  277. where God tells Abraham,

  278. not only am I going

  279. to keep my side

  280. of the covenant relationship,

  281. but I'm also going

  282. to keep your side

  283. of the covenant relationship too

  284. because one day

  285. you and your descendants

  286. are going to break my covenant,

  287. but I have already made

  288. a provision for that.

  289. So God makes a covenant

  290. that confirms

  291. his promise to Abraham.

  292. And then in Genesis 17,

  293. which was our Old Testament passage

  294. that we read earlier,

  295. God then gives Abraham

  296. a sign of this covenant,

  297. and it's the sign

  298. of circumcision,

  299. a sign that involves

  300. the shedding of blood.

  301. And God says to Abraham,

  302. I want you and your family

  303. to remember the promise

  304. and the covenant

  305. that I made to you.

  306. And so I'm going to give you

  307. a sign that you belong to me,

  308. that you're my people,

  309. and all of my promises

  310. I have made to you are yours

  311. if you embrace me,

  312. if you embrace this covenant

  313. relationship from the heart.

  314. And those who receive

  315. that covenant sign,

  316. Abraham received it,

  317. most of them received it

  318. before they expressed

  319. covenant faith.

  320. And this is a key detail

  321. that we'll come back later to

  322. in the sermon.

  323. But to summarize,

  324. in the story of Abraham,

  325. we see that God's story

  326. of redemption,

  327. to redeem a fallen world,

  328. to restore his creation,

  329. unfolds in the story

  330. of Abraham through a promise,

  331. a covenant,

  332. and a covenant sign.

  333. And this is crucial

  334. to unlocking the meaning

  335. of the whole Old Testament

  336. because these realities

  337. defined and shaped

  338. the story and identity

  339. and the mission

  340. of the people of Israel.

  341. And it's also crucial

  342. to unlocking the meaning

  343. of baptism

  344. because it's this story

  345. that's in the background

  346. in Matthew 28

  347. when Jesus gives us

  348. the sacrament of baptism

  349. in the Great Commission.

  350. Jesus says,

  351. I am the author

  352. and the hero

  353. in the fulfillment

  354. of this story.

  355. All the promises

  356. to Abraham

  357. and the people of Israel,

  358. the covenant

  359. that confirms those promises

  360. and the sign

  361. of that covenant

  362. are all fulfilled in me.

  363. In Jesus,

  364. a new and better covenant

  365. is here.

  366. And it's a covenant

  367. that both fulfills

  368. and expands

  369. God's covenant

  370. with Abraham.

  371. As Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  372. tells us,

  373. we,

  374. all of the nations

  375. of the earth,

  376. we are the nations

  377. and we are grafted

  378. into Abraham's story

  379. and Abraham's covenant

  380. through Jesus.

  381. And because now

  382. the new covenant

  383. in Christ

  384. is greater

  385. and more expansive

  386. and the promises

  387. are greater

  388. and more expansive,

  389. we therefore now

  390. have a new

  391. and greater covenant sign.

  392. And Colossians 2,

  393. 11 through 12

  394. shows us

  395. that baptism

  396. has replaced circumcision

  397. as the sign

  398. of the new covenant.

  399. Listen to Colossians 2,

  400. 11 through 12.

  401. In him,

  402. that is Jesus,

  403. you were circumcised,

  404. but not with a circumcision

  405. made,

  406. with a circumcision

  407. made without hands,

  408. by the circumcision

  409. of Christ,

  410. having been buried

  411. with him

  412. in baptism.

  413. Paul links circumcision

  414. to baptism

  415. because both circumcision

  416. and baptism

  417. point to the same reality.

  418. The everlasting covenant

  419. that God makes

  420. with his people

  421. through the blood

  422. of Christ

  423. shed on the cross.

  424. And because the blood

  425. of Christ shed

  426. on the cross

  427. fulfilled the sign

  428. of circumcision,

  429. in the new covenant

  430. we now have

  431. the sign of water.

  432. Water,

  433. something that pictures

  434. washing and cleansing

  435. and rebirth and renewal.

  436. And so this

  437. is the story

  438. of baptism.

  439. It's the story

  440. of a gracious God

  441. who makes a promise

  442. to bless all the nations

  443. of the earth

  444. and who confirms

  445. those promises

  446. by dwelling

  447. in covenant relationship

  448. with his people

  449. and who gives them

  450. a sign

  451. that they belong

  452. to him

  453. and that his promises

  454. belong to them.

  455. And so in light

  456. of this covenant story,

  457. a question comes

  458. to the surface

  459. and it's this.

  460. In light of this covenant story,

  461. what are

  462. the specific promises

  463. that the new covenant

  464. sign of baptism

  465. signifies?

  466. What is the meaning

  467. of baptism

  468. in particular?

  469. That's what we're

  470. going to look at next,

  471. the meaning of baptism.

  472. At its core,

  473. baptism is about

  474. union with Christ.

  475. Union with Christ.

  476. That's what we see clearly

  477. in places like Romans 6,

  478. 3 through 5.

  479. Romans 6,

  480. 3 through 5 says,

  481. don't you know

  482. that all of us

  483. who are baptized

  484. into Christ Jesus

  485. were baptized

  486. into his death?

  487. We were therefore

  488. buried with him

  489. through baptism

  490. into death

  491. in order that

  492. just as Christ

  493. was raised from the dead

  494. through the glory

  495. of the Father,

  496. we too may live

  497. a new life.

  498. For if we have been

  499. united with him

  500. in a death like his,

  501. we will also

  502. certainly be united

  503. with him

  504. in a resurrection

  505. like tis.

  506. In baptism,

  507. the Holy Spirit

  508. unites us to Jesus

  509. in a way that his story

  510. becomes our story.

  511. His life

  512. becomes our life.

  513. His death

  514. becomes our death.

  515. His resurrection

  516. becomes our resurrection.

  517. His ascension

  518. becomes our ascension.

  519. And someone who has

  520. helped me understand

  521. this well

  522. is not a pastor

  523. or a theologian

  524. or a scholar,

  525. but an NBA player

  526. by the name

  527. of Jack Haley.

  528. Jack Haley

  529. is an NBA player

  530. that probably

  531. most of you

  532. have never heard of.

  533. Almost no one

  534. has ever heard of him

  535. except if you

  536. follow the NBA

  537. closely.

  538. Jack Haley

  539. was a member

  540. of the 1996

  541. Chicago Bulls.

  542. And the whole

  543. 1996 season,

  544. Jack Haley

  545. played a grand total

  546. of seven minutes

  547. the whole season.

  548. The whole season

  549. he had five points,

  550. two rebounds,

  551. zero assists,

  552. zero steals,

  553. zero blocks.

  554. His season performance

  555. was negligible.

  556. But amazingly,

  557. at the end

  558. of the 1996 season,

  559. Jack Haley

  560. got a championship ring.

  561. Why?

  562. Well,

  563. if you know

  564. anything

  565. about the 1996

  566. Chicago Bulls,

  567. you know

  568. that although

  569. they did have

  570. a good team,

  571. there is really

  572. only one reason

  573. why Jack Haley

  574. got a championship ring.

  575. And that reason

  576. is Michael Jordan.

  577. And I can almost

  578. guarantee

  579. you have heard

  580. of that name.

  581. Michael Jordan.

  582. Jordan's

  583. exemplary,

  584. unrivaled,

  585. stellar performance

  586. on the basketball

  587. court carried

  588. the Bulls not to

  589. just one championship

  590. in 1996,

  591. but to six

  592. NBA titles.

  593. And even though

  594. Jack Haley

  595. contributed nothing

  596. to the Bulls'

  597. performance that year,

  598. he was united to,

  599. he was grafted

  600. into,

  601. he was credited

  602. with the story

  603. and the performance

  604. of an amazing

  605. player named

  606. Michael Jordan.

  607. Our baptism

  608. is Jesus Christ

  609. placing his

  610. championship ring

  611. on our finger.

  612. It's the covenant

  613. sign

  614. that the Holy Spirit

  615. takes the performance

  616. of Jesus Christ

  617. and applies it

  618. to us.

  619. And all

  620. of the covenant

  621. promises made

  622. to us in baptism

  623. flow from

  624. our union

  625. with Christ.

  626. Listen to some

  627. of the promises

  628. that the New Testament

  629. tell us

  630. that we receive

  631. in baptism

  632. through union

  633. with Christ.

  634. We are washed

  635. and cleansed

  636. and forgiven

  637. from sin.

  638. we are justified

  639. before God

  640. and have peace

  641. with him.

  642. We are adopted

  643. as God's beloved

  644. sons and daughters.

  645. We are joined

  646. to God's new covenant

  647. family,

  648. the church.

  649. We are made

  650. members of his

  651. own body,

  652. his bride,

  653. his beloved.

  654. We are filled

  655. and sealed

  656. with the Holy Spirit

  657. who regenerates us

  658. and gives us new hearts.

  659. And we are given

  660. an inheritance

  661. of eternal life

  662. and the resurrection

  663. of the body.

  664. And as a result,

  665. what the Father

  666. says

  667. over his Son,

  668. Jesus Christ,

  669. at his baptism

  670. in the gospel reading

  671. that we read earlier,

  672. Matthew 3,

  673. the same thing

  674. that the Father

  675. says over the Son

  676. in his baptism,

  677. he says

  678. over you

  679. and me.

  680. This is

  681. my beloved

  682. Son.

  683. This is

  684. my beloved

  685. daughter

  686. with whom

  687. I am

  688. well pleased.

  689. The meaning

  690. of baptism

  691. is nothing less

  692. than all the

  693. spiritual blessings

  694. that we have

  695. through union

  696. with Christ

  697. by faith

  698. and all of the

  699. privileges that flow

  700. from it.

  701. we are

  702. grafted

  703. into

  704. the championship

  705. story

  706. of Jesus.

  707. And from all

  708. of this,

  709. I just want

  710. to draw out

  711. two brief

  712. implications

  713. about baptism,

  714. about the story

  715. and the meaning

  716. of baptism.

  717. I want to talk

  718. about two implications.

  719. One,

  720. about baptism

  721. as a sacrament

  722. and about how

  723. baptism impacts

  724. our discipleship.

  725. So first

  726. of all,

  727. what do we

  728. mean when

  729. we say

  730. that baptism

  731. is a sacrament?

  732. There's a lot

  733. of things we could

  734. say.

  735. Sacramental

  736. theology is a

  737. deep well.

  738. But one of the

  739. things we mean

  740. when we call

  741. baptism a

  742. sacrament is

  743. related to the

  744. covenantal story

  745. of Scripture.

  746. The covenantal

  747. story of Scripture

  748. shows us that

  749. as a sacrament,

  750. baptism is not

  751. primarily about

  752. the promises

  753. that we make

  754. to God,

  755. but about the

  756. promises that

  757. God makes to

  758. us.

  759. Let me repeat

  760. that.

  761. As a sacrament,

  762. baptism is not

  763. primarily about

  764. the promises

  765. that we make

  766. to God,

  767. it's about the

  768. promises that

  769. God makes to

  770. us.

  771. Just like with

  772. Israel and

  773. circumcision under

  774. the old covenant,

  775. baptism as the

  776. new covenant

  777. sign is about a

  778. gracious covenant

  779. keeping God who

  780. always fulfills the

  781. promises that he

  782. makes to his

  783. people.

  784. Yes, we

  785. respond in faith

  786. and trust and

  787. obedience.

  788. But the covenant

  789. sign is not

  790. primarily about our

  791. faith or our

  792. trust or our

  793. obedience, but the

  794. eternal unfailing

  795. promises of God

  796. offer to us by

  797. grace.

  798. Baptism isn't

  799. about the quality

  800. of our faith.

  801. Baptism is about

  802. the quality of the

  803. object of our

  804. faith.

  805. And this is why

  806. baptism is something

  807. that is done to

  808. us.

  809. We are baptized

  810. by someone else.

  811. This is also why

  812. the great tradition

  813. of the Christian

  814. church, Protestant,

  815. Orthodox, and

  816. Catholic churches

  817. have baptized

  818. children of

  819. believers who have

  820. not yet expressed

  821. covenant faith.

  822. If you're like me,

  823. maybe you grew up

  824. in a tradition or

  825. you're familiar with

  826. a tradition that

  827. did not practice

  828. infant baptism.

  829. And so it might

  830. be, if you're like

  831. me, this might be

  832. something new or

  833. unfamiliar or

  834. unusual to you.

  835. But what I hope

  836. you've seen this

  837. morning is that the

  838. covenantal story of

  839. scripture shows us

  840. that the promises of

  841. God always precede our

  842. faith.

  843. Whether the covenant

  844. sign is applied to us

  845. as a three-month-old

  846. or as a 30-year-old.

  847. Yes, we respond in

  848. faith and obedience,

  849. but our faith is

  850. always a response to

  851. God's gracious

  852. initiative that goes

  853. before us even

  854. before we've been

  855. born.

  856. In fact, it's God's

  857. gracious initiative

  858. that makes our faith

  859. even a possibility.

  860. That's part of what

  861. we mean when we talk

  862. about baptism as a

  863. sacrament.

  864. It's not primarily

  865. about the promises

  866. that we make to God,

  867. but about the promises

  868. that he makes to us.

  869. Secondly,

  870. if Christian

  871. discipleship

  872. had a theme song,

  873. the title of that

  874. theme song would be

  875. Remember Your Baptism.

  876. Remember Your Baptism.

  877. What's striking about

  878. Paul's letters in the

  879. New Testament is how

  880. often he repeats the

  881. same message to

  882. different churches who

  883. are dealing with all

  884. different kinds of

  885. issues and problems.

  886. He says, remember who

  887. you are in Christ because

  888. of your baptism.

  889. You've been buried with

  890. Christ in his death.

  891. You've been raised with

  892. him in his resurrection.

  893. You've been seated with

  894. him in his ascension.

  895. Now, therefore,

  896. be who you are

  897. in him.

  898. Live out of that

  899. identity.

  900. Obey God's commands

  901. out of that identity.

  902. Fight sin

  903. out of that identity.

  904. Worship

  905. relates to your

  906. brothers and sisters

  907. in Christ

  908. out of that

  909. identity.

  910. And I think even as

  911. we think about what

  912. we prayed about at

  913. the beginning of the

  914. sermon, about the

  915. anxiety around the

  916. political division in

  917. our country, I can

  918. think of few things

  919. more needed in the

  920. church today than the

  921. need to remember our

  922. baptism.

  923. what if Christians in

  924. the church today,

  925. particularly the

  926. American church, what

  927. if we related to one

  928. another more on the

  929. basis of our baptism

  930. than on the basis of

  931. our politics?

  932. What if our church

  933. family, the church of

  934. the advent, related,

  935. what if we related to

  936. one another more on the

  937. basis of our baptism

  938. than on the basis of our

  939. opinions on any number

  940. of issues?

  941. It would change the

  942. church and it might

  943. even possibly change

  944. things outside the

  945. church.

  946. Remember your baptism

  947. is the theme song of

  948. the entire Christian

  949. life.

  950. If you are struggling

  951. with sin, remember

  952. your baptism.

  953. If you feel tempted

  954. towards gossip and

  955. slander, remember your

  956. baptism.

  957. If you feel yourself

  958. isolating from Christian

  959. community and corporate

  960. worship, remember your

  961. baptism.

  962. If you're in the middle

  963. of a conflict with

  964. another brother or

  965. sister in Christ or

  966. wrestling with

  967. unforgiveness, remember

  968. your baptism.

  969. If you're doubting your

  970. faith, if you're

  971. overwhelmed with shame

  972. and self-criticism, remember

  973. your baptism.

  974. Why?

  975. Because in baptism

  976. we trust in a gracious

  977. covenant-keeping God

  978. who promises us every

  979. spiritual blessing through

  980. union with Christ, who

  981. confirms those promises

  982. with his own blood shed for

  983. us and who gives us a

  984. covenant sign that we

  985. belong to him and he will

  986. never let us go.

  987. In our baptism we have the

  988. assurance that our faith is

  989. not rooted in the promises

  990. that we make to God but in

  991. the promises that he makes

  992. to us not in the quality

  993. of our faith but in the

  994. quality of the object of

  995. our faith.

  996. And in baptism we see that

  997. being grafted into the

  998. story of Jesus means that

  999. we are joined to his body,

  1000. to this covenant community,

1001. to this new family called

  1002. the church.

1003. And that regardless of our

1004. politics or our opinions or

1005. our race or class, who we

1006. are as disciples and who we

1007. are as a church is that we

  1008. are his.

1009. We are his sons and

  1010. daughters.

  1011. We are his bride.

  1012. We are his body.

1013. We are dead and buried in

  1014. him.

1015. We are raised in him,

1016. ascended in him, seated in

  1017. him, hidden in him.

1018. We are secure in him.

1019. We are forgiven in him.

1020. We are accepted in him.

1021. We are known in him.

1022. We are beloved in him, in

  1023. Christ.

  1024. Let's pray together.
