  1. So, good morning to you all, especially if you're new, you're here for the first time.

  2. We're delighted that you're here.

  3. My name's Tommy.

  4. I'm the rector here.

  5. So, on behalf of our church, welcome.

  6. This is a Sunday where we are focusing, and you'll see a little bit more of this later

  7. in the service, we're focusing on the various ministries of our church, all of the various

  8. ministries that many of you serve in and some of you lead in.

  9. And so, we're going to hear some testimonies a little bit later from people and the way

  10. they've been impacted by your ministry in this community.

  11. And so, it would make sense to preach a sermon that is inspirational, right, that talks about

  12. the ministries in a way that inspires people.

  13. But here's the thing I really want to say.

  14. Ministry is hard.

  15. Ministry is hard.

  16. Some people, especially people who have not really ever done ministry in the name of

  17. God, or people who have not been a part of a church, might be prone to think that, well,

  18. you know, they'll say something along the lines of, well, if you're doing ministry in the name

  19. of God, shouldn't that mean that God's going to bless you?

  20. And wouldn't that mean that your life's actually going to be easier?

  21. Because God is blessing you because of all the things that you're doing for Him.

  22. But the truth is, when you're committed to doing work for God to glorify Him, when you're

  23. committed to living out the gospel in your relationships, in your job, your career, in

  24. your neighborhood, when you're working to reach people with the gospel and encourage them to

  25. grow in their faith, when you're serving and caring for those in need and dealing with

  26. all the incredible complexity there, when you're doing the work of reconciliation and peacemaking,

  27. when you're working to build a church in the heart of a city like Washington, D.C., it can

  28. sometimes feel like an uphill battle.

  29. It can sometimes feel like you're taking one step forward and five steps back.

  30. You can sometimes feel like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill only to watch it roll

  31. back down again.

  32. You inspired?

  33. You excited about what's coming?

  34. In our study of Nehemiah, we come here to chapter four.

  35. And what we're actually going to see in chapter four of Nehemiah is that there's a reason why

  36. ministry in God's name is so hard.

  37. God calls Nehemiah and blesses him to go and lead in the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

  38. So Nehemiah leads this palace that he's been living in in Susa.

  39. He travels to Jerusalem.

  40. He surveys the walls.

  41. He gathers the people together.

  42. But in chapter four, as soon as they start to build, they encounter fierce resistance.

  43. And it does not let up.

  44. So here's what we're going to look at this morning.

  45. Why is ministry so hard?

  46. And then what can we do about it?

  47. How do we persevere?

  48. Let's pray.

  49. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  50. And we thank you that because it's timeless, it is always timely.

  51. Lord, that this story that is 2,400 years old can speak into our lives right now.

  52. And it's only able to do that because of you.

  53. Because it's not just written words, ink on paper.

  54. It's a living word through the power of your spirit.

  55. You can speak to us, Lord.

  56. You can comfort those who need to be comforted.

  57. You can challenge those who need to be challenged.

  58. Convict those of us who need to be convicted, Lord.

  59. You can bring life where there is death.

  60. You can bring hope where there is despair.

  61. Lord, we pray that you would do your work through your word in us for your glory.

  62. In Jesus' name, amen.

  63. So first of all, why is ministry so hard?

  64. The story of Nehemiah essentially is this.

  65. He lives in 445 BC.

  66. He's living in the Persian palace, Susa.

  67. He's probably grown up there.

  68. He works for the king, very important government job.

  69. He hears that Jerusalem, the city of his ancestors, the city of God's people, lies in ruins.

  70. The people are scattered.

  71. They're destitute.

  72. God calls Nehemiah to leave the palace and to go bring renewal.

  73. Physically rebuild the city of God.

  74. Spiritually begin to rebuild the people of God.

  75. As I said a moment ago, as soon as the work starts, so does the opposition.

  76. It starts with one antagonist, Sanballat.

  77. And Sanballat hears that construction has started and it says he is furious when he hears that news.

  78. That's in verse 1.

  79. By verse 7, more enemies have come to the table.

  80. Maybe Sanballat was key in recruiting them.

  81. We have a list.

  82. We have Sanballat.

  83. We have Tobiah and the Arabs.

  84. We have the Ammonites and the Ashtodites.

  85. So this list, now that's not an arbitrary list.

  86. If we had a map in front of us, it would make a little more sense.

  87. Does anyone know where these enemies are located relative to Jerusalem?

  88. Yeah, the list literally goes north, east, south, west, right?

  89. All around Jerusalem, there are enemies who oppose this work.

  90. They're literally surrounded.

  91. Jerusalem is facing an existential threat.

  92. And the attack starts to come in.

  93. And the attack comes from these enemies in various forms.

  94. First, there's an enormous amount of mockery and ridicule.

  95. Sanballat says, what are these feeble Jews doing?

  96. Tobiah says, yeah, what are they building?

  97. If a little fox goes up on it, it's going to crumble down.

  98. This is ancient Near Eastern trash talk.

  99. They're being sarcastic.

  100. They're being belittling.

  101. They're being condescending.

  102. As we go forward in the chapter, we see there's a lot of slander.

  103. There's character assassination.

  104. You ever heard this?

  105. If people realize that some people, when they want to control or manipulate you, if they can't control you, what do they do?

  106. They go and they try to control what other people think about you.

  107. And that's exactly what we see here.

  108. They can't control Nehemiah, but they try to control what other people think about Nehemiah.

  109. So we see character assassination and slander.

  110. They're spreading all kinds of lies and misinformation.

  111. They set out to cause as much confusion as possible.

  112. They even threaten violence.

  113. In verse 11, we learn that they're actually planning a surprise military attack.

  114. And this is skipping ahead a bit to chapter 6, but it's important to note the opposition doesn't just come from outside, from the non-Jewish world.

  115. In chapter 6, we see that there were a bunch of nobles in Judah who were actually loyal through marriage to Tobiah.

  116. So these nobles in Judah are people that Nehemiah assumes are with him, but they're actually acting as double agents.

  117. They're acting as informants.

  118. They're reporting everything that Nehemiah is saying and doing to Tobiah.

  119. So he's not just got problems outside, he's got problems inside.

  120. And then we see the people themselves, they're experiencing profound discouragement and hopelessness and fear and despair.

  121. In verse 10, in Judah, it was said, the strength of those who bear the burdens is failing.

  122. There is too much rubble.

  123. By ourselves, we will not be able to rebuild the wall.

  124. If any of you have ever been involved in ministry, if you've ever been involved in trying to solve some of the most complex issues, right,

  125. these issues of homelessness or poverty or racial injustice or all of the various things that we, many of you are passionate about and try to work on,

  126. you know, problems that you're working on in the developing world.

  127. Those of you who work in other parts of the world trying to bring development and increase the welfare of people in other societies,

  128. you know these incredibly thorny, complex problems.

  129. It's so common and easy to look around and just be like, there's too much rubble here.

  130. Like, I don't even know where to start.

  131. It's just, why even try?

  132. This is way beyond our ability.

  133. That's exactly how they feel.

  134. Now, there are some surface-level reasons why these groups would oppose Nehemiah.

  135. There are political reasons.

  136. There are economic reasons.

  137. The stronger Jerusalem becomes, the weaker their hold is on the area.

  138. But the point we really need to focus in on is this.

  139. There's a much deeper reason why there is such opposition to this work being done.

  140. The real enemy, as we take the story of Nehemiah and situate it in the larger story of Scripture,

  141. the real enemy is not Sanballat.

  142. It's not Tobiah.

  143. It's not even the nobles who have betrayed Nehemiah.

  144. The real enemy is the same enemy who has always opposed the work of God.

  145. The same enemy who has always opposed the people of God when they're doing the work of God.

  146. The enemy that we see from the very beginning of Scripture,

  147. the enemy is Satan himself, the great adversary,

  148. working through these groups, working through these individuals to oppose the work of God.

  149. Now, they might not even know that they're instruments of that greater evil,

  150. but they've been folded in nonetheless.

  151. You know, you think about these nobles.

  152. Very likely, they believed they were doing God's work.

  153. They believed maybe that they were doing what was best for Jerusalem,

  154. what was best long term.

  155. But here's the thing.

  156. There's a lot of people maybe in the church

  157. who believe that they're doing the right thing for the right reasons.

  158. But if you look at your actions

  159. and you realize that you're participating in things like gossip or slander,

  160. assuming the worst about other people's motives without knowing all of the facts,

  161. right, imputing motives,

  162. if you catch yourself using Satan's tactics,

  163. it's worth asking whether you're doing Satan's bidding.

  164. Right?

  165. So there's this real spiritual enemy working in the background.

  166. The Apostle Paul names this in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  167. for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,

  168. but against the rulers, against the authorities,

  169. against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

  170. against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  171. That's the real enemy working through these human agents.

  172. Jesus himself says to his disciples in chapter 5, verse 11,

  173. no one likes this verse, if you really think about it,

  174. if you're a Christian.

  175. Nevertheless, here's what Jesus says.

  176. Blessed are you when, not if,

  177. when others revile you and persecute you

  178. and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  179. That's exactly what's happening to Nehemiah.

  180. Rejoice and be glad,

  181. for your reward is great in heaven,

  182. for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  183. Jesus is saying,

  184. God's people have always been reviled,

  185. they will be reviled,

  186. and that will continue until I come again.

  187. It will continue into the renewal of all things.

  188. Blessed are you when others revile you.

  189. So Nehemiah cries out in verse 4,

  190. hear, O God, for we are despised.

  191. Jesus is saying, hey, if you associate with me,

  192. you're going to be despised.

  193. It's almost a rule.

  194. 2 Timothy 3, verse 12 says it just as clearly,

    2 Timothy 3:12

  195. all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  196. He doesn't just say, most of you, or odds are.

  197. He says, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  198. The principle is this,

  199. the enemies of God always oppose the people of God

  200. when they're doing the work of God.

  201. If you don't want to be persecuted,

  202. if you don't want to be opposed,

  203. if you don't want to be reviled,

  204. don't say anything,

  205. don't do anything.

  206. But the minute you begin to try to pursue the work of God for the glory of God,

  207. you will meet opposition,

  208. and it won't let up.

  209. What are the implications of this?

  210. Satan wants us to feel hopeless.

  211. Satan wants us to feel discouraged.

  212. He wants us to feel like the people in Judah felt.

  213. The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing.

  214. It's fading.

  215. Many of you are bearing burdens right now,

  216. and you feel like, I'm not enough.

  217. I'm not up to this.

  218. I just want my life to be easier,

  219. to be more convenient.

  220. I don't want to have to suffer so much.

  221. I don't want it to have to be so hard all the time.

  222. Satan wants us to be divided.

  223. He wants us to be angry.

  224. He wants us to be bitter.

  225. He wants us to be depressed.

  226. You see this again and again and again in Scripture.

  227. King David, the man after God's own heart,

  228. Israel forever looked back and said,

  229. that was our high point of our nation.

  230. It never got better than that, right?

  231. He struggled with long bouts of depression.

  232. He struggled with deep envy of his enemies.

  233. He struggled again and again and again,

  234. if you read the Psalms,

  235. with feeling like God had abandoned him,

  236. turned his back on him.

  237. Elijah, right after his major victory

  238. over the prophets of Baal,

  239. right after, I mean, you would think

  240. if you called fire down from heaven

  241. that consumed everything,

  242. after the prophets tried and tried and tried

  243. and they did nothing,

  244. and you just pray to God and bam, fire comes down,

  245. and everybody's like,

  246. whoa, this guy, you know,

  247. and then he immediately

  248. falls into a deep, deep, deep, deep depression.

  249. It gets so bad that he wants to end his own life.

  250. He's suicidal.

  251. People like Hannah, Naomi, Jeremiah, Moses,

  252. they all struggle with self-doubt,

  253. discouragement, inadequacy, despair,

  254. all throughout their ministry.

  255. And some of the greatest theologians

  256. and pastors and missionaries

  257. and thought leaders throughout history,

  258. same thing, Martin Luther,

  259. Hannah Allen, David Brainerd,

  260. William Cowper, Charles Spurgeon,

  261. Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr.,

  262. all struggled with deep depression

  263. and discouragement all through their ministry.

  264. It's no coincidence.

  265. It's what the Bible says is gonna happen.

  266. You know, in January of this year,

  267. for those of you who were here,

  268. we planted a flag of sorts.

  269. We closed on a building in the Shaw neighborhood.

  270. We're gonna make good on our commitment

  271. to love the city long term.

  272. We're taking the ministry that has been happening

  273. and we're looking forward

  274. and we're doing what we can

  275. to establish a multi-generational ministry

  276. that will outlive all of us

  277. and continue to be a center

  278. of gospel proclamation and worship

  279. in the heart of the city,

  280. in the heart of a city that touches

  281. all the cities of the world.

  282. It is no coincidence,

  283. in my opinion,

  284. that this has also been

  285. the hardest year of ministry

  286. since we started the church.

  287. I'll just be totally honest.

  288. I have never personally felt

  289. more discouragement

  290. in almost 18 years of ministry.

  291. I have, in the last year,

  292. several times come to a place of thinking,

  293. I don't know if I can do this anymore.

  294. It's been that discouraging.

  295. And I know many of you,

  296. maybe the majority of you,

  297. are also feeling discouragement.

  298. One way or another,

  299. because of the things

  300. that you're dealing with in your life.

  301. I know that there are relationships

  302. that have broken down.

  303. I know that there has been gossip

  304. and slander,

  305. people assuming the worst

  306. about people's motives.

  307. I know that we've endured

  308. some of the most complicated

  309. and painful situations

  310. we have ever faced as a community.

  311. Make no mistake,

  312. Satan does not want us to exist.

  313. And if we do exist,

  314. he wants us to be inert,

  315. passive,

  316. peacekeeper,

  317. not peacemaker,

  318. but peacekeeper.

  319. Just go along to get along.

  320. He wants us to give up.

  321. He wants us to believe

  322. that this is too hard.

  323. He wants us to be overwhelmed

  324. by the rubble.

  325. He wants us to spend

  326. all of our time

  327. fighting each other

  328. instead of him.

  329. Why is ministry so hard?

  330. Because we have an adversary

  331. who prowls around

  332. like a roaring lion

  333. looking for someone to devour.

  334. That's why ministry is hard.

  335. Now what can we do about it?

  336. How can we persevere?

  337. This is where Nehemiah chapter 4

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  338. isn't just a hard text to read

  339. because it tells us

  340. the hard truth

  341. that we need to hear,

  342. but it also offers

  343. a profound vision

  344. of perseverance

  345. in the face of adversity.

  346. So we're going to draw out

  347. a few things

  348. that I hope and pray

  349. will help us

  350. in this season

  351. of our life together.

  352. Number one, this.

  353. Understand the relationship

  354. between divine sovereignty

  355. and human responsibility.

  356. Understand our job

  357. and then understand God's job.

  358. This is a theme

  359. that shows up

  360. all throughout Scripture.

  361. It's one of the major themes

  362. in the book of Nehemiah.

  363. Verse 9 captures it.

  364. And we prayed to our God

  365. and set a guard

  366. as a protection

  367. against them day and night.

  368. And I love that.

  369. We prayed to God

  370. and we set a guard.

  371. We did both.

  372. You know, we have a tendency

  373. to think,

  374. shouldn't it be one or the other?

  375. In other words, you know,

  376. if you're praying

  377. and you're trusting

  378. that God's going to protect you,

  379. why do you need

  380. to set a guard?

  381. Why post a watch?

  382. Don't you trust God?

  383. And if you post a watch,

  384. does that mean

  385. you didn't really believe

  386. that God could do anything?

  387. Does that,

  388. can you do both?

  389. For that matter,

  390. why do we even need

  391. walls around the city?

  392. Why not just build our houses

  393. and live in them

  394. and trust that God's

  395. going to keep us safe?

  396. Why do we need walls and gates?

  397. This dichotomy,

  398. this binary way of thinking

  399. is very prevalent.

  400. But it's not representative

  401. of what Scripture

  402. actually shows us.

  403. All throughout Scripture,

  404. we see a much more

  405. beautiful, nuanced view.

  406. We see this intertwining

  407. of divine sovereignty

  408. and human responsibility

  409. and how they work together.

  410. How at the same time,

  411. God is in control

  412. of everything.

  413. God is in control

  414. of the outcomes.

  415. And yet somehow,

  416. our choices matter

  417. and our actions matter.

  418. And there are real,

  419. live consequences

  420. that result from our actions.

  421. You know,

  422. it's interesting,

  423. in places like Isaiah chapter 38,

    Isaiah 38 chapter mention

  424. you see this interplay.

  425. King Hezekiah

  426. becomes very sick,

  427. presumably because of

  428. an infected boil.

  429. And Isaiah comes to him

  430. and says,

  431. King,

  432. you need to put your affairs

  433. in order

  434. because you're going to die.

  435. And Hezekiah is desperate.

  436. He prays to God

  437. to heal him.

  438. And God,

  439. through Isaiah,

  440. says to him,

  441. okay,

  442. I'm going to heal you.

  443. And I'm going to actually

  444. extend your life

  445. for 15 more years.

  446. And then God tells Isaiah

  447. to make a poultice

  448. out of figs

  449. and apply it

  450. to the infected area.

  451. And Hezekiah is healed.

  452. And he praises God

  453. for healing him.

  454. But God works through

  455. the poultice to do it.

  456. And you say,

  457. well,

  458. was it the fig poultice?

  459. Fig,

  460. that was a common medicinal

  461. remedy back in the day,

  462. right?

  463. Was it the figs

  464. or was it God?

  465. The Bible would say yes.

  466. Yes.

  467. Right?

  468. God has such control

  469. over history

  470. and yet He is so intimately

  471. involved in our lives

  472. that He's able to work

  473. through our actions

  474. without being constrained

  475. by them.

  476. See,

  477. some people say,

  478. well,

  479. God's already made up

  480. His mind anyway.

  481. It doesn't matter

  482. what we do.

  483. God's going to do

  484. what He's going to do.

  485. That's not what

  486. the Bible says.

  487. The Bible says not

  488. God works despite

  489. our choices only,

  490. nor does it say

  491. that God is constrained

  492. by our choices,

  493. as though God's kind of

  494. biting His nails

  495. saying,

  496. I hope they make

  497. the right choice

  498. because if they don't,

  499. there's nothing I can do.

  500. It says that God

  501. is able to work

  502. through our choices

  503. somehow in a way

  504. that doesn't thwart

  505. His will.

  506. His outcomes

  507. are guaranteed and sure,

  508. but they come through

  509. our choices.

  510. When it comes to

  511. dealing with opposition,

  512. here's what this means,

  513. that we should pray

  514. continually,

  515. we should pray

  516. continually,

  517. trusting that God

  518. is with us,

  519. and we should also

  520. take whatever measures

  521. necessary to care

  522. for ourselves

  523. and our families.

  524. Right?

  525. As Jesus says

  526. when He sends out

  527. His disciples,

  528. we should be innocent

  529. as doves, right?

  530. Trusting in the Lord,

  531. relying on the Lord

  532. to provide everything.

  533. We should also be

  534. wise and shrewd.

  535. They're not opposed

  536. to one another.

  537. So you look at Nehemiah.

  538. He prays

  539. and he posts a guard.

  540. He says,

  541. I want you to work

  542. with one hand

  543. and I want you to hold

  544. a weapon with the other.

  545. He splits them up

  546. so some of them

  547. are keeping watch

  548. while others build.

  549. And all the while

  550. they're praying.

  551. They're praying,

  552. they're praying,

  553. they're praying,

  554. and every time

  555. he gets a chance,

  556. Nehemiah is saying,

  557. it is God

  558. who is keeping us safe.

  559. It is not us.

  560. God is the one

  561. that we trust in,

  562. not ourselves.

  563. And you see this

  564. beautiful balance revealed.

  565. So listen,

  566. if you're severely depressed,

  567. pray.

  568. Pray every day

  569. for God to heal you.

  570. But also consider

  571. going to a competent therapist.

  572. And there's some

  573. really great medication

  574. out there

  575. that could make

  576. a huge difference

  577. in your life.

  578. and you should

  579. thank God it exists.

  580. It saves lives.

  581. If you want to be able

  582. to contend for your faith

  583. when people question you,

  584. you should pray

  585. and maybe consider

  586. studying and learning

  587. apologetics.

  588. There are some

  589. great arguments

  590. out there.

  591. I remember when I was

  592. a clinician in Boston

  593. before I came down here

  594. and I remember

  595. I was the only counselor

  596. in my outpatient clinic

  597. and they gave me

  598. an opportunity

  599. to present as a Christian

  600. my vision of counseling

  601. as a Christian therapist.

  602. And I remember

  603. I stood up in front

  604. of the entire clinical team

  605. during a staff meeting

  606. and I opened my mouth

  607. and I got two sentences out

  608. and then a guy

  609. in the front row

  610. who was an atheist,

  611. none of them were Christians,

  612. a guy in the front row

  613. just comes at me

  614. and he throws

  615. every argument

  616. he possibly can at me

  617. for why everything I believe

  618. and then everybody else

  619. started joining in too

  620. and they started coming at me

  621. with what about this

  622. and what about this

  623. and what about this, right?

  624. And I remember looking around

  625. and thinking I'm overwhelmed.

  626. That was the thing

  627. that inspired me

  628. many years ago

  629. to start digging into

  630. what is the reasonable foundation

  631. for the things

  632. that we believe?

  633. Is this a blind leap of faith

  634. or are there actually meaningful?

  635. And I begin to discover

  636. actually this is an incredibly

  637. thoughtful faith

  638. that has been

  639. a great source of hope

  640. to some of the smartest people

  641. throughout history

  642. and there's a wonderful

  643. treasure trove

  644. if you're willing to dig in

  645. that helps us connect

  646. mind and heart

  647. in our faith, right?

  648. Now if you do that,

  649. does that mean

  650. you don't trust God

  651. as he says

  652. to give you the words

  653. when you need them?

  654. No.

  655. It means God works

  656. through all of it.

  657. If you want to do ministry

  658. in the city,

  659. we pray.

  660. We need to pray every day

  661. that God is blessing

  662. what we're doing,

  663. that God is with us,

  664. that God goes before us.

  665. But we also should be working

  666. to develop the absolute

  667. best strategies

  668. we possibly can

  669. for doing effective ministry

  670. in a place like D.C.

  671. in 2024.

  672. Not the same strategies

  673. that worked in the 1970s

  674. or the 1920s, right?

  675. Or the mid-1800s.

  676. Strategies for here and now,

  677. for this win.

  678. So we need to trust

  679. in the dual reality

  680. of divine sovereignty

  681. and human responsibility.

  682. I remember this came up a lot

  683. when in the early days of COVID,

  684. we were all being told

  685. to wear masks, you know?

  686. And there were some Christians

  687. who were like,

  688. well, if you wear a mask,

  689. you're not trusting God,

  690. you know?

  691. And I'm like,

  692. well, if there's a chance

  693. that I'm going to get somebody

  694. next to me sick

  695. and they're going to die,

  696. I'm going to wear the mask.

  697. It doesn't mean

  698. I don't trust the Lord,

  699. you know?

  700. I'm going to put on

  701. the fig poultice,

  702. you know?

  703. And I'm going to trust

  704. and hope and pray

  705. that if God wants to work

  706. through that means he can.

  707. They don't have to be

  708. opposed to one another.

  709. Divine sovereignty

  710. and human responsibility.

  711. Number two, fear God,

  712. not other people.

  713. How do you persevere?

  714. Fear God,

  715. not other people.

  716. A lot of opposition

  717. these days,

  718. in our society,

  719. thankfully,

  720. most of us don't have to worry

  721. about physical violence.

  722. Praise God for that.

  723. But a lot of the opposition

  724. that we face

  725. is going to come through mocking,

  726. through ridicule,

  727. through threats

  728. from other people.

  729. I love Nehemiah's encouragement

  730. to his people

  731. when they are filled with fear.

  732. He says,

  733. do not be afraid of them.

  734. Remember the Lord

  735. who is great and awesome.

  736. Do not be afraid of them.

  737. Remember the Lord

  738. who is great and awesome.

  739. In other words,

  740. he's saying,

  741. remember how big God is

  742. and how small they are.

  743. That's what he's saying.

  744. Excessive fear

  745. is a sign typically

  746. that our view of God

  747. has gotten too small.

  748. And if you're afraid

  749. of other people,

  750. it means that your view

  751. of them has gotten too big.

  752. Right?

  753. There's a great book about this.

  754. When people are big

  755. and God is small,

  756. we have excessive fear.

  757. That's typically

  758. what's happening.

  759. Nehemiah's saying,

  760. listen,

  761. in those moments,

  762. you need to remember

  763. the bigness of God,

  764. the greatness of God.

  765. He's bigger,

  766. he's more powerful

  767. than anything you might fear.

  768. For those of you

  769. in leadership,

  770. especially if you are here

  771. and you lead

  772. a ministry of some kind,

  773. you're a leader

  774. in your organization,

  775. you will never

  776. make everybody happy.

  777. It will never happen.

  778. If you have more than one person

  779. in your organization,

  780. if it's you

  781. and two other people,

  782. one of them will love you.

  783. One of them will profoundly

  784. disagree with what you're doing.

  785. It's a guaranteed principle.

  786. Even Jesus himself

  787. could not please everybody.

  788. What makes us think

  789. we can do any better?

  790. Jesus never chased

  791. after anyone's approval.

  792. Again and again and again,

  793. people said false things

  794. about him.

  795. They falsely accused him.

  796. They would misrepresent him.

  797. They would walk away

  798. and tell other people

  799. horrible things about him.

  800. He never once tracked

  801. any of the Pharisees down

  802. and said,

  803. I heard what you said about me

  804. and I just want to set

  805. the record straight.

  806. That's not what I said.

  807. That's not what I did.

  808. You cannot control

  809. what other people

  810. think about you.

  811. Listen,

  812. you need to learn this

  813. if you don't know it.

  814. You cannot control

  815. what other people

  816. think about you.

  817. If someone does not like you,

  818. if someone does not like

  819. what you represent,

  820. it is not your job

  821. to try to change

  822. their perception of you.

  823. Their internal world

  824. is their responsibility.

  825. It's not your responsibility.

  826. Actually,

  827. what other people

  828. think about you,

  829. that is not your business.

  830. business.

  831. It's their business.

  832. Mind your own business.

  833. For all you know,

  834. their thoughts and opinions

  835. of you have nothing

  836. to do with you.

  837. For all you know,

  838. they are projecting

  839. things onto you

  840. that have way more

  841. to do with them

  842. than they do you.

  843. But you don't know

  844. because it's not

  845. your internal world.

  846. You can't know.

  847. Don't waste time

  848. and energy

  849. trying to manage

  850. somebody else's

  851. internal world.

  852. If you're a leader

  853. and you go around

  854. chasing everybody's approval,

  855. you're never going

  856. to get anything done.

  857. You're going to create

  858. an insecure system.

  859. People are not going

  860. to trust you.

  861. And things will probably

  862. get worse

  863. in your organization.

  864. You know,

  865. my favorite definition

  866. of leadership

  867. is this.

  868. Leadership is the art

  869. of disappointing people

  870. at a rate

  871. they can handle.

  872. Leadership is the art

  873. of disappointing people

  874. at a rate

  875. they can handle.

  876. Commit yourself

  877. to doing the work

  878. that you believe

  879. God has called you

  880. to do.

  881. Commit yourself

  882. to loving and serving

  883. and pleasing Him

  884. and Him alone.

  885. And as Nehemiah says,

  886. remember the Lord.

  887. Some people

  888. will be with you.

  889. Some people won't.

  890. It's not up to you

  891. to change their perception

  892. of you.

  893. So that's the first

  894. two things.

  895. Divine sovereignty

  896. and human responsibility,

  897. number one.

  898. Number two,

  899. fear the Lord

  900. and not other people.

  901. Number three,

  902. the final one.

  903. Trust in the Lord

  904. who fights for us.

  905. Trust in the Lord

  906. who fights for us.

  907. Verse 20,

  908. we see in Nehemiah's

  909. ultimate source of hope.

  910. He says,

  911. keep working

  912. no matter what.

  913. Keep going.

  914. Keep building

  915. because we know

  916. that our God

  917. will fight for us.

  918. That is so fantastic.

  919. But what we need

  920. to understand now

  921. at our point

  922. in the story

  923. is that we read

  924. this differently

  925. than the way

  926. Nehemiah did.

  927. Even though he says this,

  928. Nehemiah had no way

  929. of knowing

  930. how true

  931. that statement would be

  932. and how it would

  933. ultimately be applied

  934. to God's people

  935. because at this point

  936. in history,

  937. Nehemiah still believes

  938. that the Jews

  939. are the good guys

  940. and the greatest enemies

  941. are the non-Jews.

  942. They're the other people

  943. who oppose the Jews

  944. and they oppose God.

  945. So their world

  946. is still divided

  947. into good guys,

  948. the Jews,

  949. the God's people

  950. and everybody else.

  951. And so that's why

  952. Nehemiah prays

  953. and says in verse 5,

  954. hey,

  955. do you hear

  956. what they're saying

  957. about us?

  958. Lord,

  959. don't cover their guilt.

  960. Don't forgive them.

  961. Don't even give them

  962. an opportunity

  963. to be restored.

  964. He says,

  965. let not their sin

  966. be blotted out

  967. from your sight.

  968. He says,

  969. remember what they said

  970. about us

  971. and about you

  972. and bring justice.

  973. Smite them.

  974. He prayed for God

  975. to fight the evil

  976. out there,

  977. the enemies of God

  978. in the world.

  979. It would take

  980. hundreds more years

  981. before the Jews

  982. would learn the truth.

  983. The Apostle Paul,

  984. one of the most exemplary

  985. Jewish religious leaders,

  986. figures,

  987. if you ever wanted

  988. a person to,

  989. an example to live by

  990. in terms of moral excellence,

  991. it's hard to beat

  992. the Apostle Paul

  993. in his early years.

  994. Here's what he writes.

  995. In Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  996. both Jews

  997. and Greeks

  998. are under sin.

  999. As it is written,

  1000. none is righteous,

  1001. no,

  1002. not one.

  1003. He's saying,

  1004. you know,

  1005. it always said this

  1006. in the Scripture,

  1007. we just missed it.

  1008. No one understands,

1009. no one seeks for God,

  1010. all have turned aside,

  1011. together they have

  1012. become worthless,

  1013. no one does good,

  1014. not even one.

  1015. same realization hit

  1016. Alexander Solzhenitsyn

  1017. when he was,

  1018. he thought he was

1019. one of the good guys

1020. and then he got caught

  1021. criticizing Stalin,

1022. he ends up in a gulag

1023. and his world breaks down.

  1024. He used to think

1025. he was a good guy

  1026. and all those people

  1027. over there

  1028. were the bad guys

  1029. and his life

  1030. was transformed

  1031. when he found himself

  1032. numbered among the wicked.

  1033. And he writes,

  1034. the line separating

  1035. good and evil

  1036. passes not through states,

1037. which is what he used to think,

  1038. nor between classes,

  1039. nor between political parties

  1040. either,

  1041. but right through

  1042. every human heart,

  1043. through all human hearts.

  1044. In other words,

1045. the God that we truly need,

  1046. friends,

1047. the God that we truly need

  1048. is not a God

1049. who will fight for us

1050. against the evil out there.

  1051. The God we need

  1052. is the God

1053. who will fight for us

1054. against the evil in here.

  1055. In us.

  1056. But you understand

1057. the paradox of that, right?

1058. How can God fight for us

1059. if he's fighting evil in us?

1060. How can God fight for us

1061. if the evil is in us?

1062. And that's why we need

  1063. to understand

  1064. that the entire story

  1065. of Nehemiah

  1066. actually points to this

  1067. even greater story.

  1068. Someone much greater

  1069. than Nehemiah.

  1070. Who didn't just leave

  1071. a palace

1072. to come and rebuild a city.

1073. He left the throne of heaven

  1074. to come and restore

  1075. and renew the world.

1076. And not only is he

1077. the God who fights for us,

  1078. he's actually the God

1079. at our point in history

  1080. who fought for us.

  1081. The real battle

  1082. has already been fought

  1083. and won.

  1084. On the cross,

  1085. Jesus Christ fought

  1086. the greatest battle

  1087. ever staged,

  1088. ever waged

  1089. against the true enemy.

  1090. Satan and sin

  1091. and death,

  1092. taking the sin

1093. of the world on himself,

  1094. dying in our place,

  1095. and through that defeat,

  1096. he won.

  1097. He achieved victory.

  1098. He defeated Satan.

1099. He defeated sin and death

  1100. once and for all.

  1101. The cross tells us

  1102. that the greatest battle

  1103. has already been fought

  1104. and won.

  1105. And it tells us

  1106. that the victory

  1107. is ours.

  1108. It is the outworking

  1109. of that victory

1110. within which we live now.

  1111. And one day,

  1112. the good work

  1113. that has been begun

  1114. in us

  1115. and in the world,

1116. according to the apostle Paul,

  1117. will be brought

  1118. to completion.

  1119. So now,

  1120. God is able

  1121. to offer forgiveness

  1122. and renewal

  1123. not only to people

  1124. like Nehemiah,

  1125. but even people

  1126. like Sanballat

  1127. and Tobiah.

  1128. Even people

  1129. like us

  1130. who realize

  1131. that apart from

1132. the grace of the gospel,

  1133. we are numbered

  1134. among the enemies

  1135. of God.

1136. So for those of us

  1137. in ministry,

  1138. for those of us

  1139. who are currently

  1140. in ministry,

  1141. leading in ministry,

  1142. who maybe after today

  1143. will decide to join

  1144. a ministry,

  1145. because I know

  1146. you're raring to go

  1147. at this point,

  1148. keep going.

  1149. Keep working.

  1150. Keep,

  1151. no matter how hard

  1152. it gets,

  1153. if you believe

1154. that God has called you

  1155. to do the work

  1156. that you're doing,

  1157. then keep going.

1158. We labor for a God

  1159. who fights for us.

  1160. And because he fought

  1161. for us,

  1162. we know the victory

  1163. and the fruit

  1164. are secure,

1165. even if we don't see it

  1166. right this moment.

  1167. Let's pray.

  1168. Lord,

  1169. we thank you

  1170. for the finished work,

  1171. the battle you fought

1172. for us on the cross,

  1173. and we pray

  1174. that that would be

  1175. the foundation

  1176. of our hope,

  1177. that we know

  1178. that as we labor

  1179. in your kingdom,

  1180. Lord,

1181. as we may feel overwhelmed

  1182. by the rubble

  1183. in our lives

  1184. around us,

  1185. Lord,

  1186. we pray that you

  1187. would remind us

  1188. of the assurance

1189. we have in the gospel,

  1190. Lord,

  1191. that no matter

  1192. how hard things get,

1193. no matter if we feel

1194. like we need to see

  1195. no fruit now,

  1196. that Lord,

1197. one day all of this

  1198. good work that you

  1199. have begun

  1200. will come to completion.

1201. One day we will see it,

1202. one day it will make sense,

1203. one day all of the

  1204. brokenness of the world

  1205. will be eradicated.

  1206. Lord,

1207. we pray in that hope,

1208. we pray in the name

1209. of the Father and the Son

  1210. and the Holy Spirit.

  1211. Amen.

  1212. Amen.

  1213. Amen.

  1214. Amen.

  1215. Amen.

  1216. Amen.

  1217. Amen.

  1218. Amen.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Beweg bin.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.
